  1. Hey everyone, please return to your seats and we will continue our worship this evening with the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  2. It's good to see you all. For those of you who are visiting, my name is Sean. I'm one of the pastors of Trinity Cambridge Church.

  3. It's my joy and privilege to preach God's Word to you this evening.

  4. Please turn with me in your Bibles to Acts chapter 15.

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  5. We've been going through a series in the book of Acts and we are in chapter 15 today.

  6. I originally intended to cover the entire chapter.

  7. Well, not the entire chapter, but up to verse 35.

  8. However, when I finished the sermon, it was twice as long as it was supposed to be.

  9. So, I'm just going to preach up to verse 21 today.

  10. It's because there's a lot of thorny, complex theological issues in this passage that it's going to take some time to deal with.

  11. So, I'll address the rest of the passage next week.

  12. So, we'll just read from Acts chapter 15 verse 1 to verse 21.

    Acts 15:1

  13. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  14. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  15. We are often clawing our way, trying to earn and pay for the salvation you have freely given us in Jesus.

  16. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  17. But Lord, will you teach us in your Word that you have decided in your sovereign will

  18. not to burden us beyond our repentance and faith in Jesus.

  19. that we might be saved by grace through faith in Him.

  20. We pray that you have decided in your sovereign will not to bring that truth home to every single person here.

  21. That they might experience the joy and freedom that comes

  22. only when we look to Christ

  23. and trust in Him alone for our salvation.

  24. in Jesus' name we pray.

  25. Amen.

  26. Acts chapter 15 verses 1 to 21.

    Acts 15:1–21

  27. But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers.

  28. Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom of Moses,

  29. you cannot be saved.

  30. And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them,

  31. Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem

  32. to the apostles and the elders about this question.

  33. So, being sent on their way by the church,

  34. they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria,

  35. describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles

  36. and brought great joy to all the brothers.

  37. When they came to Jerusalem,

  38. they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders

  39. and they declared all that God had done with them.

  40. But,

  41. some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees

  42. rose up and said,

  43. it is necessary to circumcise them

  44. and to order them to keep the law of Moses.

  45. The apostles and the elders were gathered together to consider this matter.

  46. And after there had been much debate,

  47. Peter stood up and said to them,

  48. Brothers,

  49. you know that in the early days,

  50. God made a choice among you,

  51. that by my mouth,

  52. the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe.

  53. And God,

  54. who knows the heart,

  55. bore witness to them

  56. by giving them the Holy Spirit

  57. just as He did to us.

  58. And He made no distinction

  59. between us and them,

  60. having cleansed their hearts by faith.

  61. Now, therefore,

  62. why are you putting God to the test

  63. by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples

  64. that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?

  65. But we believe that we will be saved

  66. through the grace of the Lord Jesus

  67. just as they will.

  68. And all the assembly fell silent

  69. and they listened to Barnabas and Paul

  70. as they related what signs and wonders

  71. God had done through them among the Gentiles.

  72. After they finished speaking,

  73. James replied,

  74. Brothers,

  75. Listen to me.

  76. Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles

  77. to take from them a people for His name.

  78. And with this,

  79. the words of the prophets agree,

  80. just as it is written,

  81. After this,

  82. I will return

  83. and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen.

  84. I will rebuild its ruins

  85. and I will restore it

  86. and the remnant of mankind may seek the Lord.

  87. That the remnant of mankind may seek the Lord.

  88. And all the Gentiles were called by my name,

  89. says the Lord,

  90. who makes these things known from of old.

  91. Therefore,

  92. my judgment is that

  93. we should not trouble those of the Gentiles

  94. who turn to God,

  95. but should write to them

  96. to abstain from the things polluted by idols

  97. and from sexual immorality

  98. and from what has been strangled

  99. and from blood.

  100. For from ancient generations,

  101. Moses has had in every city

  102. those who proclaim Him.

  103. For He has read every Sabbath

  104. in the synagogues.

  105. This is God's holy

  106. and authoritative Word.

  107. There's no shortage of issues

  108. that threaten to divide the church nowadays,

  109. whether it's issues of gender and sexuality,

  110. race and racism,

  111. or various responses to COVID.

  112. It's comforting to know

  113. that we're not alone

  114. in experiencing these pools.

  115. Every local church

  116. deals with forces

  117. that threaten to divide them.

  118. Even the first century church

  119. led by the 12 apostles themselves.

  120. In Acts 15,

  121. we see the early church grappling

  122. with a tectonic shift

  123. in their understanding,

  124. in their theology,

  125. in their understanding of the church,

  126. the life of the church.

  127. Salvation has come to the Gentiles,

  128. evidenced by the falling of the Holy Spirit

  129. upon them in Acts 10.

  130. However, this raised some significant

  131. theological questions.

  132. Should Gentile Christian men

  133. be circumcised like their Jewish Christian brothers?

  134. Were the laws of Moses,

  135. laws of Moses binding on Gentile Christians

  136. as they historically have been binding for the Jews?

  137. In this passage,

  138. we see in order the dissension caused by the Judaizers,

  139. the debate among the elders and the apostles,

  140. and then the decision rendered by the elders and the apostles.

  141. So we see the dissension,

  142. and then the debate,

  143. and then the decision.

  144. And from this passage,

  145. we learn lessons not only about

  146. how to resolve disputes within the church,

  147. but even more significantly,

  148. we learn the liberating truth

  149. that God saves a remnant

  150. from both Jews and Gentiles

  151. by grace through faith

  152. in Jesus Christ alone.

  153. So let's first look at the dissension

  154. caused by the Judaizers

  155. in verses 1 to 5.

  156. After completing their missionary journey,

  157. Paul and Barnabas returned to Antioch in Syria,

  158. and they gave the church,

  159. they gave the church

  160. that originally sent them out,

  161. a report of all that God has done through them.

  162. And it says in chapter 14, verse 28,

  163. that they remained no little time with the disciples.

  164. But while they were remaining with the disciples

  165. and continuing to teach them

  166. and to minister to them,

  167. they encountered some people

  168. who were undermining their teaching,

  169. who were opposing their work.

  170. It says in verse 1,

  171. But some men came down from Judea

  172. and were teaching the brothers.

  173. And this is what they were teaching.

  174. Quote,

  175. Unless you are circumcised

  176. according to the custom of Moses,

  177. you cannot be saved.

  178. Later in verse 24,

  179. the apostles and the elders

  180. of the church in Jerusalem

  181. say that these men had gone out from them,

  182. meaning that they were once part

  183. of the Jerusalem church.

  184. So this association with the Jerusalem church,

  185. the first church,

  186. the first local church

  187. in the history of humanity,

  188. of which the 12 apostles themselves were a part,

  189. likely bolstered the credibility

  190. of these men

  191. who had come down from Jerusalem.

  192. They have the proximity to the apostles.

  193. They came down from Jerusalem

  194. where most of the Jewish converts are,

  195. Jewish Christians are.

  196. And they're telling us

  197. that we have to be circumcised

  198. and follow all the customs of Moses

  199. in order to be saved.

  200. So who's right?

  201. Paul and Barnabas

  202. who have been teaching us

  203. or these people

  204. from the church in Jerusalem.

  205. They don't seem to occupy

  206. these men that came down from Jerusalem

  207. any office in the church.

  208. They are not elders.

  209. They're just called some men.

  210. However, they nonetheless took it upon themselves

  211. to teach the brothers

  212. these contrary doctrines.

  213. And though circumcision is the main issue here,

  214. it's not the only issue.

  215. Circumcision was the sign

  216. of the Abrahamic covenant.

  217. In Genesis 17,

  218. when God made a covenant with Abraham,

  219. He gave the sign of circumcision

  220. for generations to come.

  221. It was a sign that signified

  222. that those who are circumcised,

  223. those who are descendants,

  224. physical descendants of Abraham,

  225. are the promised offspring,

  226. that they are the heirs of the promise

  227. that God had given to Abraham.

  228. And the covenant sign of circumcision

  229. signified that if you broke the covenant,

  230. if you violated the covenant,

  231. that you would literally be cut off

  232. from that line,

  233. that promised line.

  234. That's what the covenant signified.

  235. And so it came very naturally

  236. to Jewish converts to Christianity

  237. to think,

  238. well, of course you have to be circumcised.

  239. That is the sign of your inclusion

  240. in the people of God.

  241. But the issue is not merely circumcision

  242. because the circumcision is a sign

  243. that you are a party

  244. to the covenant that God has made

  245. with His people.

  246. And if you are a part of the covenant,

  247. you have to obey

  248. all of the covenant stipulations,

  249. all the laws that go with that,

  250. the laws of Moses.

  251. And we can see that clearly in verse 5

  252. because they weren't merely teaching

  253. that they need to be circumcised.

  254. They said that it is necessary

  255. to circumcise them

  256. and to order them

  257. to keep the law of Moses.

  258. So what these circumcision party people

  259. are arguing is that

  260. they not only need to be circumcised,

  261. they essentially need to become Jewish

  262. in order to be saved.

  263. They need to obey the entirety

  264. of the laws of Moses.

  265. In order for you to be fully converted,

  266. a genuine Christian,

  267. you have to be circumcised

  268. and adopt the way of life of Jews.

  269. Note well here that the issue at hand

  270. is not just how Gentile converts

  271. should behave

  272. when they're in the company

  273. of Jewish Christians.

  274. That's not the issue at hand.

  275. The issue is a matter of salvation,

  276. criterion for salvation.

  277. They're saying,

  278. unless you are circumcised

  279. according to the custom of Moses,

  280. you cannot be saved.

  281. So it's a critical issue.

  282. That's at hand.

  283. What does it mean for a Gentile

  284. to convert to Christianity?

  285. Not merely how should a converted Gentile behave.

  286. Paul and Barnabas objected

  287. to this teaching from the men

  288. from Jerusalem church

  289. and verse 2 says that

  290. they had no small dissension

  291. and debate with them.

  292. This is a deliberate understatement.

  293. No small dissension means that

  294. they had a very big dissension.

  295. In fact, the dissension was so significant

  296. that they were unable to resolve

  297. their differences among them

  298. through debate.

  299. So Paul and Barnabas

  300. and some of the others

  301. were appointed by the church in Antioch

  302. to go up to Jerusalem

  303. to the apostles and the elders

  304. about this question.

  305. They're seeking arbitration

  306. from the apostles and the elders

  307. in Jerusalem.

  308. When you're unable to resolve

  309. a dispute with fellow Christians,

  310. it is wise to seek arbitration

  311. from proper authorities.

  312. If it's a disagreement

  313. among fellow church members,

  314. they may seek arbitration

  315. from the elders.

  316. If it's a disagreement

  317. between church members

  318. and the elders themselves,

  319. we don't have the 12 apostles

  320. we can consult,

  321. but we are part

  322. of a larger denomination

  323. called Sovereign Grace Churches.

  324. In the northeast region

  325. of the denomination

  326. that we are part of,

  327. there is a committee

  328. called the Judicial Review Committee

  329. whose responsibility it is

  330. to, quote,

  331. hear and adjudicate

  332. any complaints or grievances

  333. against the local eldership

  334. by a member of a local church.

  335. I pray that that day never comes,

  336. but if any of you believe

  337. that I am erring

  338. from God's will

  339. in my teaching and leadership,

  340. and if I'm refusing

  341. to listen to your earnest appeals,

  342. then that is the recourse

  343. that is available to you

  344. to settle the matter.

  345. And the person to contact

  346. is Rob Flood.

  347. That's the name

  348. of the chair of the committee.

  349. His email address

  350. is rflood,

  351. F-L-O-O-D,

  352. at C-O-V-F-E-L dot org,

  353. cubfell.org.

  354. You guys can take notes on that.

  355. That's fine with me.

  356. I think this accountability

  357. is good for pastors to have.

  358. So Barnabas and Paul

  359. set out for Jerusalem,

  360. and both of them,

  361. on their way to Jerusalem,

  362. on their way wherever they go,

  363. they're proclaiming

  364. all the things

  365. that God had done

  366. in the conversion

  367. of the Gentiles.

  368. So obviously,

  369. you know where Paul

  370. and Barnabas fall

  371. in this theological debate.

  372. Unlike the Judaizers

  373. who are insisting

  374. that Gentiles

  375. become circumcised

  376. and essentially become Jewish,

  377. Paul and Barnabas

  378. believe that these Gentiles

  379. who have put their faith in Jesus

  380. are already saved.

  381. So that's the dissension

  382. caused by the Judaizers

  383. in verses 1-5.

  384. And then now let's look

  385. at the debate

  386. among the elders

  387. and the apostles

  388. in verses 6-18.

  389. It begins in verse 6.

  390. Notice in verse 4

  391. that Paul and Barnabas,

  392. when they arrived in Jerusalem,

  393. they were welcomed

  394. by the church

  395. and the apostles

  396. and the elders.

  397. So they were welcomed

  398. by the gathering

  399. of the entire church.

  400. But then look at

  401. who's involved in verse 6.

  402. It says,

  403. the apostles and elders

  404. were gathered together

  405. to consider this matter.

  406. In other words,

  407. they're not having

  408. this debate

  409. with the whole church

  410. in the context

  411. of a members' meeting.

  412. Rather,

  413. they are having this debate

  414. among the apostles

  415. and elders

  416. in the context

  417. of a leadership meeting.

  418. It is the responsibility

  419. of the apostles

  420. and the elders

  421. to render a decision

  422. on this complex theological matter.

  423. The witness of church leaders

  424. is one of the categories

  425. that this passage teaches us

  426. that is part of processing

  427. disagreements

  428. within the church.

  429. I'll mention two other categories

  430. as we're going,

  431. but first we see here

  432. the witness of church leaders.

  433. Verse 7 tells us

  434. that after there had been

  435. much debate,

  436. Peter stood up

  437. and said to them,

  438. Brothers,

  439. you know that in the early days

  440. God made a choice among you

  441. that by my mouth

  442. the Gentiles should hear

  443. the word of the gospel

  444. and believe.

  445. Peter is recalling

  446. his experience

  447. with Cornelius

  448. and his family and friends

  449. in chapter 10.

  450. There God showed Peter

  451. a thrice-repeated vision

  452. of a sheath

  453. being lowered

  454. with all kinds

  455. of unclean animals

  456. that were not fit

  457. for Jewish consumption

  458. on it.

  459. And then a voice

  460. in the vision

  461. from God said,

  462. Peter, kill and eat.

  463. And when Peter refused

  464. out of a desire

  465. to stay pure

  466. and to avoid ritual impurity,

  467. said,

  468. No, no way.

  469. I'm not going to eat

  470. any of that.

  471. And God said to him,

  472. What God has made clean

  473. do not call common.

  474. And in saying that,

  475. God was declaring

  476. that Gentiles,

  477. whom Jews considered unclean,

  478. are no longer

  479. to be viewed that way.

  480. And right after

  481. that threefold vision,

  482. God had told Peter,

  483. Behold, three men

  484. are looking for you.

  485. He had threefold vision

  486. and three men show up

  487. from the Gentile Cornelius

  488. and they ask him

  489. to come with them.

  490. And so Peter goes

  491. without hesitation

  492. and he ministers to them.

  493. And while he's

  494. preaching the gospel there

  495. to Cornelius

  496. and his gathering

  497. of intimate friends

  498. and family,

  499. the Holy Spirit

  500. fell upon them.

  501. So now,

  502. that was only five chapters ago,

  503. but a lot has happened

  504. since then.

  505. Peter refers to those

  506. as the early days.

  507. In the early days,

  508. if you track the time

  509. and place indicators

  510. throughout the book of Acts

  511. in those intervening chapters

  512. and then you reference

  513. other epistles

  514. in the New Testament

  515. to get an estimate

  516. of how many years

  517. have elapsed,

  518. it seems about seven years

  519. has already passed

  520. since that,

  521. the outpouring of the Holy Spirit

  522. upon the Gentiles

  523. in chapter 10.

  524. So it has been a while.

  525. That's why Peter calls

  526. those days the early days.

  527. Those were the days

  528. when Peter was still

  529. the head of the church

  530. in Jerusalem.

  531. He left the church

  532. in Jerusalem

  533. to flee to another location

  534. in chapter 12

  535. when King Herod

  536. was out to kill him.

  537. Herod Agrippa.

  538. In those days

  539. when God chose Peter

  540. to preach the word

  541. of the gospel

  542. to the Gentiles,

  543. they believed

  544. and because of this

  545. pioneering role

  546. that Peter had

  547. in bringing the gospel

  548. to the Gentiles,

  549. his is the first perspective

  550. that Luke notes

  551. at the conclusion

  552. of this debate.

  553. Peter continues

  554. in verses 8 to 9,

  555. and God who knows

  556. the heart

  557. bore witness to them

  558. by giving them

  559. the Holy Spirit

  560. just as he did to us.

  561. And he made no distinction

  562. between us and them

  563. having cleansed their hearts

  564. by faith.

  565. Peter is testifying

  566. that God himself

  567. who knows the heart

  568. of every person

  569. bore witness

  570. to the Gentiles.

  571. because God peers

  572. into the human soul,

  573. because he looks

  574. into the human heart,

  575. he can never be fooled.

  576. And yet,

  577. this all-knowing God himself

  578. bore witness

  579. that these Gentiles

  580. in chapter 10

  581. are truly saved,

  582. that they truly belong

  583. to him

  584. because God gave proof

  585. of that

  586. by giving them

  587. the Holy Spirit

  588. just as he did

  589. to the Jewish

  590. converts to Christianity

  591. in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  592. And Peter is saying

  593. he made no distinction

  594. between us and them

  595. having cleansed them

  596. by their,

  597. cleansed their hearts

  598. by faith.

  599. So if God

  600. has not made a distinction

  601. between us and them,

  602. who are we

  603. to make such a distinction?

  604. Peter contends

  605. that God has already

  606. cleansed their hearts

  607. by faith.

  608. The cleansing

  609. of sinful hearts

  610. is the work

  611. of the Holy Spirit

  612. and God granted

  613. this to the Gentiles

  614. in accordance

  615. with their faith

  616. in Jesus Christ,

  617. the crucified

  618. and risen Savior.

  619. We might,

  620. we're so used

  621. to this truth

  622. that we might miss

  623. how radical this is,

  624. but this was

  625. a groundbreaking

  626. theological revelation,

  627. a radical statement

  628. that our sinful hearts

  629. are cleansed

  630. by the Spirit,

  631. by the means of faith,

  632. not by works.

  633. The cleansing

  634. does not come

  635. through circumcision.

  636. The cleansing

  637. does not come

  638. through obedience

  639. to the Mosaic Law.

  640. The cleansing

  641. is obtained

  642. by faith

  643. in Jesus Christ.

  644. Baptism is the outward

  645. sign of that inward faith.

  646. It outwardly,

  647. baptism outwardly signifies

  648. the inward cleansing

  649. of the Holy Spirit.

  650. And these Gentile believers

  651. have already

  652. been baptized.

  653. Peter's point

  654. is straightforward.

  655. God has abolished

  656. the ceremonial distinction

  657. between clean Jews

  658. and unclean Gentiles.

  659. He makes no such distinction

  660. and He Himself

  661. has given proof

  662. of this

  663. by giving them

  664. the Holy Spirit

  665. in response

  666. to their faith

  667. in Jesus.

  668. This is the second witness,

  669. the second category

  670. of witness

  671. to consider

  672. when we're processing

  673. disagreements

  674. within the church.

  675. First was the witness

  676. of church leaders

  677. and the second

  678. is the witness

  679. of the Holy Spirit.

  680. Is the Holy Spirit

  681. Himself

  682. experientially

  683. confirming

  684. your convictions?

  685. The Holy Spirit

  686. confirmed the reality

  687. that Gentile believers

  688. were saved

  689. and included

  690. in the people of God

  691. apart from circumcision

  692. and the Mosaic law.

  693. Now, therefore,

  694. Peter says

  695. in verses 10 to 11,

  696. why are you

  697. putting God

  698. to the test

  699. by placing

  700. a yoke

  701. on the neck

  702. of the disciples

  703. that neither our fathers

  704. nor we

  705. have been able

  706. to bear?

  707. But we believe

  708. that we will be saved

  709. through the grace

  710. of the Lord Jesus

  711. just as they will.

  712. To put God

  713. to the test

  714. is to push back

  715. against Him

  716. to rebel

  717. against Him

  718. His revealed will.

  719. To see if God

  720. really means

  721. what He says.

  722. If He will really

  723. punish our sins.

  724. When God Himself

  725. has bore witness

  726. to the Gentile converts

  727. by giving them

  728. the Holy Spirit

  729. to add an additional

  730. hurdle that they must

  731. clear in order

  732. to be saved

  733. is tantamount

  734. to challenging God.

  735. Oh, is that what

  736. God said?

  737. Well, this is what

  738. I say.

  739. You have to be

  740. circumcised.

  741. You have to follow

  742. all the laws of Moses.

  743. They were testing God.

  744. And Peter implores

  745. his fellow apostles

  746. and elders,

  747. neither our fathers

  748. nor we

  749. have been able

  750. to bear this yoke

  751. of the Mosaic law.

  752. None of us,

  753. not even the Jews,

  754. will be saved

  755. by observance

  756. of the law.

  757. So why then

  758. do you insist

  759. on putting this burden

  760. on these Gentile disciples?

  761. Yokes back then

  762. were typically made

  763. of wooden beams

  764. and leather straps.

  765. It's what joined

  766. two oxen together

  767. and enabled the farmer

  768. to control the oxen.

  769. The Mosaic law

  770. which God

  771. had given to Israel

  772. when He made

  773. His covenant with them

  774. was like a yoke

  775. that joined them

  776. to God.

  777. But they were not

  778. able to bear it.

  779. Jeremiah chapter 5

    Jeremiah 5:5

  780. verse 5

  781. speaks of how

  782. God's people

  783. failed to submit

  784. to God

  785. under His yoke

  786. but instead

  787. they broke open

  788. the yoke.

  789. They burst the bonds

  790. says in Jeremiah 5.5.

  791. They were rebellious people.

  792. Stubborn oxen

  793. useless for farming.

  794. It's not that

  795. the yoke itself

  796. was bad.

  797. The law

  798. was a means

  799. of blessing

  800. to God's people.

  801. If they were

  802. if they could keep it

  803. but it became

  804. a heavy burden

  805. because they could

  806. not keep it.

  807. Romans 7

  808. 10-12

  809. Paul writes

  810. about this.

  811. I think I have it

  812. to show you guys

  813. on the screen.

  814. The law is holy

  815. and the commandment

  816. is holy

  817. and righteous

  818. and good

  819. but he argues

  820. the very commandment

  821. that promised life

  822. proved to be death

  823. to me

  824. for sin

  825. seizing an opportunity

  826. through the commandment

  827. deceived me

  828. and through it

  829. killed me.

  830. Paul's here

  831. describing the experience

  832. of a Jew

  833. under the law

  834. before Christ.

  835. The law

  836. which was intended

  837. to be a means

  838. of blessing

  839. a source of life

  840. to God's people

  841. instead brought death

  842. due to their sin

  843. because they failed

  844. to keep the law

  845. because they couldn't

  846. bear the yoke

  847. and burst the bonds

  848. in rebellion.

  849. Even though

  850. the law of Moses

  851. did make provisions

  852. for making atonement

  853. for sin

  854. burnt offerings

  855. sin offerings

  856. guilt offerings

  857. and so on

  858. these sacrifices

  859. could not ultimately

  860. purify and save

  861. God's people.

  862. Hebrews 10

  863. 1-4

  864. teaches us

  865. that the Old Testament

  866. law

  867. was merely

  868. a shadow

  869. of the good things

  870. to come

  871. instead of the true

  872. form of these realities.

  873. It can never

  874. by the same sacrifices

  875. that are continually

  876. offered each year

  877. make perfect

  878. those who draw near.

  879. Otherwise

  880. would they not

  881. have ceased

  882. to be offered

  883. since the worshippers

  884. having once been cleansed

  885. would no longer

  886. have any consciousness

  887. of sins.

  888. But in these sacrifices

  889. there is a reminder

  890. of sins every year

  891. for it is impossible

  892. for the blood

  893. of bulls and goats

  894. to take away sins.

  895. The author of Hebrews

  896. is basing his argument

  897. on the presupposition

  898. that if sacrifice

  899. for sin

  900. is truly efficacious

  901. it would have

  902. a decisive

  903. once and for all

  904. effect

  905. of cleansing

  906. our conscience

  907. so that we no longer

  908. have any consciousness

  909. of sin.

  910. However

  911. the Old Testament

  912. sacrifices

  913. never had

  914. such an effect.

  915. Leviticus 16

  916. stipulated that

  917. on the day

  918. of atonement

  919. once a year

  920. the high priest

  921. was to offer

  922. two male goats

  923. for a sin offering

  924. and one ram

  925. for a burnt offering

  926. on behalf

  927. of the Israelites.

  928. The priest

  929. was to make

  930. atonement

  931. for the people

  932. after laying

  933. both hands

  934. on the head

  935. of the other

  936. live goat

  937. and confessing

  938. over it

  939. all the iniquities

  940. of God's people

  941. and all their

  942. transgressions

  943. and their sins

  944. he was supposed

  945. to send away

  946. the goat

  947. into the wilderness

  948. so that the goat

  949. might

  950. bear all their

  951. iniquities

  952. on itself

  953. to a remote area.

  954. However

  955. even this

  956. dramatic

  957. annual sacrifice

  958. on the day

  959. of atonement

  960. did not have

  961. the effect

  962. of cleansing

  963. the consciences

  964. of God's people

  965. once and for all.

  966. In fact

  967. the rituals

  968. were so designed

  969. to heighten

  970. the people's

  971. awareness

  972. of their sins

  973. and their

  974. state

  975. of alienation

  976. separation

  977. from God.

  978. In this sense

  979. the day

  980. of atonement

  981. functioned

  982. as an annual

  983. reminder

  984. of sins.

  985. Every year

  986. think about this

  987. guys

  988. every year

  989. they had

  990. to offer

  991. the sacrifice

  992. again.

  993. Every year

  994. they were reminded

  995. that they could

  996. not enter

  997. the most holy

  998. place within

  999. the temple

  1000. where the sacrifice

  1001. is to be made.

  1002. Only the high

  1003. priest may enter

  1004. the most holy

  1005. place

  1006. and he could

  1007. enter only

  1008. once a year

  1009. and even he

  1010. couldn't answer

  1011. until he had

  1012. first offered

  1013. sacrifice

  1014. taking blood

  1015. which was for

  1016. himself

  1017. and for the

  1018. unintentional sins

  1019. of the people.

  1020. And there was

  1021. a veil

  1022. covering the

  1023. most holy

  1024. place that

  1025. separated the

  1026. congregation

  1027. from God

  1028. a reminder

  1029. that their

  1030. sin

  1031. still separated

  1032. them from

  1033. God.

  1034. They could

  1035. not enter

  1036. it even

  1037. after the

  1038. sacrifice

  1039. was made.

  1040. And they

  1041. knew that

  1042. they had

  1043. to return

  1044. again next

  1045. year to

  1046. offer the

  1047. same

  1048. sacrifice.

  1049. Can you

  1050. imagine that

  1051. sinking feeling?

  1052. It's really

  1053. sad to think

  1054. about.

  1055. I don't know

  1056. if you've

  1057. ever had

  1058. the experience

  1059. of feeling

  1060. so dirty.

  1061. Maybe you

  1062. were actually

  1063. dirty.

  1064. Maybe you

  1065. had oil

  1066. or some

  1067. grime

  1068. that's really

  1069. hard to get

  1070. out of your

  1071. body on

  1072. you.

  1073. Or maybe

  1074. you just

  1075. felt dirty

  1076. because of

  1077. what someone

  1078. else had

  1079. done to

  1080. you.

  1081. And you

  1082. tried to

  1083. shower,

  1084. wash yourself

  1085. over and

  1086. over and

  1087. over again,

  1088. but you

  1089. never felt

  1090. clean.

  1091. similarly,

  1092. though God

  1093. graciously

  1094. made

  1095. provisions

  1096. for atonement

  1097. for their

  1098. sins in

  1099. the laws

  1100. of Moses,

  1101. they were

  1102. reminded

  1103. every single

  1104. year

  1105. that it

  1106. was not

  1107. enough.

  1108. They were

  1109. not holy.

  1110. clean.

  1111. They could

  1112. not enter

  1113. into God's

  1114. presence.

  1115. They were

  1116. not clean.

  1117. For it

  1118. is impossible

  1119. for the

  1120. blood of

  1121. bulls and

  1122. goats to

  1123. take away

  1124. sins.

  1125. And this

  1126. is why

  1127. God sent

  1128. Jesus,

  1129. His only

  1130. Son,

  1131. as the

  1132. ultimate

  1133. sacrifice

  1134. for us

  1135. to

  1136. cleanse

  1137. us

  1138. once

  1139. and

  1140. for

  1141. all.

  1142. All of

  1143. the Old

  1144. Testament

  1145. sacrifices

  1146. were

  1147. foreshadowing

  1148. and pointing

  1149. to the

  1150. ultimate

  1151. sacrifice

  1152. of Jesus

  1153. on the

  1154. cross.

  1155. For,

  1156. as it

  1157. says in

  1158. Hebrews

  1159. 10,

  1160. 10-14,

  1161. it is

  1162. only through

  1163. the offering

  1164. of the

  1165. body of

  1166. Jesus

  1167. Christ

  1168. once

  1169. for

  1170. all

  1171. that

  1172. those

  1173. who

  1174. are

  1175. being

  1176. sanctified

  1177. are

  1178. perfected

  1179. for

  1180. all

  1181. time

  1182. because

  1183. Christ,

  1184. our

  1185. Passover

  1186. lamb,

  1187. has been

  1188. sacrificed

  1189. because

  1190. Jesus

  1191. is the

  1192. lamb of

  1193. God

  1194. who

  1195. takes

  1196. away

  1197. for

  1198. good

  1199. the

  1200. sin

  1201. of

  1202. the

  1203. world.

  1204. And

  1205. this

  1206. is

  1207. why

  1208. it

  1209. says

  1210. in

  1211. Mark

  1212. 15-38

  1213. that

  1214. when

  1215. Jesus

  1216. died,

  1217. the

  1218. curtain

  1219. of

  1220. the

  1221. temple

  1222. was

  1223. torn

  1224. in

  1225. two

  1226. from

  1227. top

  1228. to

  1229. bottom.

  1230. Praise

  1231. God.

  1232. That

  1233. opaque

  1234. curtain

  1235. that

  1236. we

  1237. could

  1238. never

  1239. see

  1240. through,

  1241. that

  1242. space

  1243. beyond

  1244. the

  1245. curtain

  1246. that

  1247. most

  1248. holy

  1249. place

  1250. which

  1251. seemed

  1252. so

  1253. within

  1254. reach

  1255. yet

  1256. so

  1257. impossibly

  1258. far

  1259. away

  1260. was

  1261. torn

  1262. open

  1263. by

  1264. Jesus

  1265. Christ

  1266. so

  1267. that

  1268. all

  1269. of

  1270. God's

  1271. people

  1272. may

  1273. enter

  1274. in.

  1275. Cleansed

  1276. of our

  1277. sins,

  1278. purified

  1279. in our

  1280. conscience.

  1281. That's

  1282. the good

  1283. news

  1284. that

  1285. we

  1286. proclaim.

  1287. That's

  1288. why

  1289. it is

  1290. called

  1291. the gospel

  1292. in verse

  1293. 7

  1294. because

  1295. that

  1296. means

  1297. good

  1298. news.

  1299. We

  1300. could

  1301. never

  1302. bear

  1303. the

  1304. heavy

  1305. yoke

  1306. of

  1307. the

  1308. law,

  1309. but

  1310. now

  1311. we

  1312. have

  1313. a

  1314. different

  1315. yoke

  1316. to

  1317. bear.

  1318. So

  1319. like

  1320. Jesus

  1321. says

  1322. in

  1323. Matthew

  1324. 11,

  1325. we

  1326. Taylor

  1327. read

  1328. from

  1329. this

  1330. and

  1331. we

  1332. shared

  1333. it

  1334. in

  1335. the

  1336. call

  1337. to

  1338. worship,

  1339. come

  1340. to

  1341. me

  1342. all

  1343. who

  1344. labor

  1345. and

  1346. are

  1347. heavy

  1348. laden

  1349. and

  1350. I

  1351. will

  1352. give

  1353. you

  1354. rest.

  1355. Take

  1356. my

  1357. yoke

  1358. upon

  1359. you

  1360. and

  1361. learn

  1362. from

  1363. me

  1364. for

  1365. I

  1366. am

  1367. gentle

  1368. and

  1369. lowly

  1370. in

  1371. heart

  1372. and

  1373. you

  1374. will

  1375. find

  1376. rest

  1377. for

  1378. your

  1379. souls

  1380. for

  1381. my

  1382. yoke

  1383. is

  1384. easy

  1385. and

  1386. my

  1387. burden

  1388. is

  1389. light.

  1390. Our

  1391. Lord

  1392. Jesus

  1393. is not

  1394. a

  1395. harsh

  1396. task

  1397. master.

  1398. He's

  1399. not

  1400. a

  1401. slave

  1402. driver.

  1403. He's

  1404. gentle

  1405. and

  1406. lowly

  1407. in

  1408. heart.

  1409. He

  1410. gives

  1411. us

  1412. easy

  1413. yokes.

  1414. I

  1415. wonder

  1416. how

  1417. many

  1418. of

  1419. you

  1420. are

  1421. still

  1422. laboring

  1423. under

  1424. the

  1425. heavy

  1426. yoke

  1427. of

  1428. the

  1429. law.

  1430. I

  1431. wonder

  1432. how

  1433. many

  1434. of

  1435. you

  1436. are

  1437. bruised

  1438. and

  1439. battered,

  1440. breathing

  1441. heavily,

  1442. bowed

  1443. under

  1444. the

  1445. heavy

  1446. burden,

  1447. stumbling

  1448. along,

  1449. ever

  1450. failing,

  1451. when

  1452. Christ

  1453. is

  1454. offering

  1455. you

  1456. an

  1457. easy

  1458. yoke

  1459. and

  1460. a

  1461. light

  1462. burden.

  1463. How do

  1464. you know

  1465. that you

  1466. are saved?

  1467. How do

  1468. you know

  1469. that you

  1470. will go

  1471. to heaven

  1472. after you

  1473. die?

  1474. If your

  1475. answer is,

  1476. well,

  1477. I've

  1478. gone to

  1479. church

  1480. all my

  1481. life,

  1482. or,

  1483. well,

  1484. I'm

  1485. a

  1486. pretty

  1487. good

  1488. person,

  1489. relatively

  1490. speaking,

  1491. or,

  1492. of course,

  1493. I've

  1494. sinned,

  1495. but I

  1496. haven't

  1497. done

  1498. anything

  1499. like

  1500. those

  1501. people,

  1502. then you

  1503. just

  1504. don't

  1505. get it.

  1506. Your

  1507. obedience

  1508. and good

  1509. works

  1510. are not

  1511. the

  1512. basis

  1513. for your

  1514. salvation.

  1515. They

  1516. can

  1517. never

  1518. be

  1519. inadequate

  1520. grounds

  1521. for

  1522. our

  1523. salvation.

  1524. Only

  1525. Jesus

  1526. is

  1527. sufficient

  1528. for us.

  1529. Only

  1530. the

  1531. crucified

  1532. and

  1533. risen

  1534. Christ

  1535. can

  1536. save

  1537. us.

  1538. So

  1539. verse

  1540. 9 says

  1541. that our

  1542. hearts

  1543. are

  1544. cleansed

  1545. by

  1546. faith.

  1547. Now

  1548. faith

  1549. is

  1550. a

  1551. condition

  1552. for

  1553. salvation.

  1554. But

  1555. it is

  1556. an

  1557. instrument,

  1558. it's

  1559. an

  1560. instrumental

  1561. condition,

  1562. not the

  1563. causal

  1564. condition.

  1565. Imagine

  1566. that you

  1567. are

  1568. dehydrated.

  1569. Without

  1570. a sip

  1571. of water,

  1572. you're

  1573. about to

  1574. kick the

  1575. bucket,

  1576. you're about

  1577. to bite

  1578. the dust.

  1579. And

  1580. then someone

  1581. graciously

  1582. comes over

  1583. and pours

  1584. some water

  1585. on you.

  1586. You

  1587. still have

  1588. to open

  1589. your mouth

  1590. and drink

  1591. the water,

  1592. but it's

  1593. not your

  1594. act of

  1595. drinking

  1596. that

  1597. saves

  1598. you.

  1599. That's

  1600. just your

  1601. way of

  1602. receiving

  1603. the water,

  1604. which is

  1605. what saves

  1606. you.

  1607. Water

  1608. is the

  1609. causal

  1610. condition.

  1611. You're

  1612. receiving

  1613. it,

  1614. opening

  1615. your mouth

  1616. is the

  1617. instrumental

  1618. condition.

  1619. Faith

  1620. is not

  1621. what

  1622. saves

  1623. you.

  1624. Faith

  1625. is the

  1626. means

  1627. by which

  1628. you

  1629. appropriate

  1630. the grace

  1631. of God

  1632. that

  1633. saves

  1634. you.

  1635. It's

  1636. Jesus

  1637. alone

  1638. who by

  1639. his

  1640. death

  1641. and

  1642. resurrection

  1643. secures

  1644. the

  1645. cleansing

  1646. water

  1647. of the

  1648. Holy

  1649. Spirit

  1650. on our

  1651. behalf.

  1652. He

  1653. alone

  1654. can

  1655. save

  1656. us.

  1657. That's

  1658. why

  1659. verse

  1660. 11

  1661. says

  1662. that we

  1663. are

  1664. saved

  1665. by

  1666. the

  1667. grace

  1668. of

  1669. the

  1670. Lord

  1671. Jesus.

  1672. Grace

  1673. means

  1674. unmerited

  1675. favor,

  1676. unearned

  1677. favor.

  1678. It's a

  1679. favor that

  1680. God bestows

  1681. on us

  1682. even though

  1683. he is not

  1684. obliged

  1685. in any

  1686. way to

  1687. do so.

  1688. Salvation

  1689. is a

  1690. gift,

  1691. faith

  1692. alone,

  1693. grace

  1694. alone,

  1695. Christ

  1696. alone.

  1697. It's

  1698. all of

  1699. these.

  1700. You

  1701. find all

  1702. of these

  1703. truths,

  1704. wonderful

  1705. truths,

  1706. in these

  1707. few short

  1708. verses.

  1709. Neither

  1710. Jew nor

  1711. Greek

  1712. will be

  1713. saved

  1714. by

  1715. obedience

  1716. to

  1717. the

  1718. law.

  1719. Both

  1720. Jew and

  1721. Greek

  1722. will be

  1723. saved

  1724. by

  1725. grace

  1726. through

  1727. faith

  1728. in

  1729. Jesus

  1730. Christ.

  1731. So

  1732. then

  1733. shall

  1734. we

  1735. put

  1736. the

  1737. yoke

  1738. that

  1739. we

  1740. ourselves

  1741. could

  1742. not

  1743. bear

  1744. around

  1745. the

  1746. neck

  1747. of

  1748. others?

  1749. Shall

  1750. we

  1751. lay

  1752. the

  1753. burden

  1754. we

  1755. could

  1756. not

  1757. carry

  1758. on

  1759. the

  1760. back

  1761. of

  1762. others?

  1763. God

  1764. forbid

  1765. may

  1766. be

  1767. far

  1768. from

  1769. us.

  1770. after

  1771. Peter's

  1772. testimony

  1773. of how

  1774. the

  1775. spirit

  1776. of

  1777. God

  1778. himself

  1779. bore

  1780. witness

  1781. to

  1782. this

  1783. truth

  1784. it

  1785. says

  1786. in

  1787. verse

  1788. 12

  1789. that

  1790. all

  1791. of

  1792. the

  1793. assembly

  1794. fell

  1795. silent.

  1796. They

  1797. know

  1798. that

  1799. God

  1800. has

  1801. spoken

  1802. through

  1803. Peter.

  1804. And

  1805. then

  1806. Barnabas

  1807. and

  1808. Paul

  1809. further

  1810. corroborate

  1811. Peter's

  1812. testimony

  1813. by

  1814. relating

  1815. what

  1816. signs

  1817. and

  1818. wonders

  1819. God

  1820. had

  1821. done

  1822. through

  1823. them

  1824. among

  1825. the

  1826. Gentiles.

  1827. So

  1828. they

  1829. are

  1830. bearing

  1831. testimony

  1832. that

  1833. God

  1834. has

  1835. been

  1836. authenticating

  1837. the true

  1838. conversion

  1839. of the

  1840. Gentiles

  1841. by

  1842. giving

  1843. them

  1844. granting

  1845. them

  1846. signs

  1847. and

  1848. wonders

  1849. as

  1850. they

  1851. minister

  1852. to

  1853. these

  1854. Gentiles.

  1855. And

  1856. then

  1857. after

  1858. Peter,

  1859. Barnabas

  1860. and

  1861. Paul,

  1862. Apostle

  1863. James

  1864. starts

  1865. speaking

  1866. in

  1867. verse

  1868. 13.

  1869. This

  1870. is not

  1871. James,

  1872. the son

  1873. of Zebedee

  1874. and

  1875. Salome,

  1876. brother

  1877. of Apostle

  1878. John.

  1879. That

  1880. James

  1881. was beheaded

  1882. by King

  1883. Herod Agrippa

  1884. in Acts

  1885. 12.

  1886. This

  1887. is likely

  1888. the same

  1889. Apostle

  1890. James

  1891. that Paul

  1892. calls

  1893. the Lord's

  1894. brother

  1895. in Galatians

  1896. 1.19.

  1897. Not

  1898. Jesus'

  1899. actual

  1900. immediate

  1901. brother

  1902. but a

  1903. near

  1904. kin.

  1905. He's

  1906. the author

  1907. of the

  1908. book of

  1909. James

  1910. in the

  1911. New Testament

  1912. and he

  1913. appears

  1914. to have

  1915. been

  1916. the

  1917. lead

  1918. elder

  1919. or

  1920. lead

  1921. pastor

  1922. of the

  1923. Jerusalem

  1924. church.

  1925. This

  1926. is why

  1927. he's

  1928. named

  1929. first

  1930. among

  1931. the

  1932. elders

  1933. of the

  1934. Jerusalem

  1935. church

  1936. and this

  1937. is

  1938. why

  1939. he's

  1940. referred

  1941. to

  1942. as

  1943. representative

  1944. of the

  1945. entire

  1946. church

  1947. of

  1948. Jerusalem

  1949. in

  1950. Acts

  1951. 12.17

  1952. and

  1953. 21.18.

  1954. And it's

  1955. James who

  1956. will give

  1957. the final

  1958. verdict

  1959. of the

  1960. apostles

  1961. and the

  1962. elders.

  1963. He says

  1964. in verses

  1965. 13-14

  1966. brothers

  1967. listen to

  1968. me

  1969. Simeon

  1970. has

  1971. related

  1972. how

  1973. God

  1974. first

  1975. visited

  1976. the

  1977. Gentiles

  1978. to take

  1979. from

  1980. them

  1981. a

  1982. people

  1983. for

  1984. his

  1985. name.

  1986. Simeon

  1987. is a

  1988. reference

  1989. to

  1990. Simon

  1991. Peter

  1992. and

  1993. James

  1994. concurs

  1995. that

  1996. with

  1997. what

  1998. Peter

  1999. said

  2000. that

  2001. God

  2002. has

  2003. visited

  2004. the

  2005. Gentiles

  2006. in order

  2007. to

  2008. take

  2009. from

  2010. them

  2011. a

  2012. people

  2013. for

  2014. his

  2015. name.

  2016. This

  2017. is a

  2018. significant

  2019. acknowledgement

  2020. because

  2021. the word

  2022. people

  2023. is almost

  2024. exclusively

  2025. reserved

  2026. in the

  2027. Old

  2028. Testament

  2029. as a

  2030. reference

  2031. to

  2032. God's

  2033. chosen

  2034. people.

  2035. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 7:6

  2036. chapter 7

  2037. verse 6

  2038. says this

  2039. for you

  2040. are

  2041. a

  2042. people

  2043. holy

  2044. to

  2045. the

  2046. Lord

  2047. your

  2048. God

  2049. the

  2050. Lord

  2051. your

  2052. God

  2053. has

  2054. chosen

  2055. you

  2056. to

  2057. be

  2058. a

  2059. people

  2060. for

  2061. his

  2062. treasured

  2063. possession

  2064. out of

  2065. all the

  2066. peoples

  2067. who are

  2068. on the

  2069. face

  2070. of

  2071. the

  2072. earth.

  2073. There

  2074. were

  2075. many

  2076. nations

  2077. in the

  2078. world

  2079. that

  2080. served

  2081. other

  2082. gods

  2083. but

  2084. the

  2085. Lord

  2086. had

  2087. chosen

  2088. Israel

  2089. in

  2090. particular

  2091. to

  2092. be

  2093. his

  2094. chosen

  2095. people

  2096. a

  2097. people

  2098. for

  2099. his

  2100. special

  2101. possession

  2102. a

  2103. people

  2104. who

  2105. would

  2106. be

  2107. his

  2108. own

  2109. inheritance

  2110. people

  2111. who

  2112. would

  2113. carry

  2114. his

  2115. name

  2116. but

  2117. James

  2118. is here

  2119. applying

  2409. find

  2410. in our

  2412. Jesus

  2413. Christ

  2414. that's

  2463. of him

  2464. who

  2465. called

  2466. you

  2467. out

  2468. of

  2469. darkness

  2470. into

  2471. his

  2472. marvelous

  2473. light

  2474. once

  2475. you

  2476. were

  2477. not

  2478. a

  2479. people

  2480. but

  2481. now

  2482. you

  2483. are

  2484. God's

  2485. people

  2486. once

  2487. you

  2488. had

  2489. not

  2492. but

  2493. now

  2494. you

  2495. have

  2496. received

  2497. mercy

  2498. hallelujah

  2499. James

  2500. then

  2501. cites

  2502. and alludes

  2503. to several

  2504. other

  2505. Old Testament

  2506. passages

  2507. to make

  2508. the case

  2509. from

  2510. scripture

  2511. itself

  2512. that

  2513. what

  2514. Peter

  2515. has

  2516. just

  2517. said

  2518. regarding

  2519. the

  2520. inclusion

  2521. of the

  2522. Gentiles

  2523. is

  2524. true

  2525. this

  2526. is

  2527. the

  2528. third

  2529. category

  2530. to

  2531. consider

  2532. when

  2533. dealing

  2534. with

  2535. disagreements

  2536. within

  2537. the

  2538. church

  2539. the

  2540. witness

  2541. of

  2542. church

  2543. leaders

  2544. the

  2545. witness

  2546. of

  2547. the

  2548. holy

  2549. spirit

  2550. and

  2551. finally

  2552. the

  2553. witness

  2554. of

  2555. scripture

  2556. our

  2557. own

  2558. subjective

  2559. sense

  2560. of what

  2561. the

  2562. holy

  2563. spirit

  2564. is

  2565. saying

  2566. or

  2567. doing

  2568. should

  2569. be

  2570. corroborated

  2571. by

  2572. the

  2573. witness

  2574. of

  2575. scripture

  2576. if

  2577. it

  2578. contradicts

  2579. scripture

  2580. then

  2581. we

  2582. can

  2583. be

  2584. certain

  2585. that

  2586. our

  2587. sense

  2588. of

  2589. the

  2590. spirit

  2591. work

  2592. is

  2593. wrong

  2594. because

  2595. the

  2596. spirit

  2597. of

  2598. God

  2599. will

  2600. never

  2601. contradict

  2602. the

  2603. word

  2604. of

  2605. God

  2606. this

  2607. is

  2608. precisely

  2609. James

  2610. point

  2611. he says

  2612. in

  2613. verse

  2614. 15

  2615. and

  2616. with

  2617. this

  2618. with

  2619. what

  2620. with

  2621. the

  2622. testimony

  2623. that

  2624. Peter

  2625. has

  2626. just

  2627. born

  2628. of

  2629. the

  2630. work

  2631. of

  2632. the

  2633. holy

  2634. spirit

  2635. and

  2636. with

  2637. this

  2638. the

  2639. words

  2640. of

  2641. the

  2642. prophets

  2643. agree

  2644. the

  2645. inclusion

  2646. of

  2647. the

  2648. gentiles

  2649. into

  2650. the

  2651. people

  2652. of

  2653. God

  2654. attested

  2655. to

  2656. by

  2657. the

  2658. outpouring

  2659. of

  2660. the

  2661. Holy

  2662. Spirit

  2663. is

  2664. confirmed

  2665. by

  2666. what

  2667. is

  2668. written

  2669. in

  2670. scripture

  2671. by

  2672. the

  2673. prophets

  2674. he

  2675. cites

  2676. chapter

  2677. 9

  2678. verses

  2679. 11

  2680. to

  2681. 12

  2682. and

  2683. verses

  2684. 16

  2685. to

  2686. 18

  2687. he

  2688. says

  2689. after

  2690. this

  2691. I

  2692. will

  2693. return

  2694. and

  2695. I

  2696. will

  2697. rebuild

  2698. the

  2699. tent

  2700. of

  2701. David

  2702. that

  2703. has

  2704. fallen

  2705. I

  2706. will

  2707. rebuild

  2708. its

  2709. ruins

  2710. and

  2711. I

  2712. will

  2713. restore

  2714. it

  2715. that

  2716. the

  2717. remnant

  2718. of

  2719. mankind

  2720. may

  2721. seek

  2722. the

  2723. Lord

  2724. and

  2725. all

  2726. the

  2727. Gentiles

  2728. who

  2729. are

  2730. called

  2731. by

  2732. my

  2733. name

  2734. says

  2735. the

  2736. Lord

  2737. who

  2738. makes

  2739. these

  2740. things

  2741. known

  2742. from

  2743. of

  2744. old

  2745. if

  2746. you

  2747. compare

  2748. this

  2749. quote

  2750. in

  2751. Acts

  2752. verses

  2753. 15

  2754. chapter

  2755. 15

  2756. 16

  2757. and

  2758. 18

  2759. to

  2760. Amos

  2761. 9

  2762. 11

  2763. to

  2764. 12

  2765. in

  2766. your

  2767. own

  2768. Bibles

  2769. you'll

  2770. notice

  2771. a

  2772. discrepancy

  2773. in

  2774. verse

  2775. 12

  2776. in

  2777. Amos

  2778. 9

  2779. 12

  2780. because

  2781. there

  2782. it

  2783. says

  2784. that

  2785. they

  2786. may

  2787. possess

  2788. the

  2789. remnant

  2790. of

  2791. Eden

  2792. which

  2793. is

  2794. different

  2795. from

  2796. what

  2797. it

  2798. says

  2799. in

  2800. Acts

  2801. 15

  2802. 17

  2803. where

  2804. James

  2805. mentions

  2806. the

  2807. remnant

  2808. of

  2809. mankind

  2810. this

  2811. is

  2812. because

  2813. James

  2814. is

  2815. citing

  2816. the

  2817. Septuagint

  2818. which

  2819. is

  2820. an

  2821. ancient

  2822. Greek

  2823. translation

  2824. of

  2825. the

  2826. Hebrew

  2827. Old

  2828. Testament

  2829. which

  2830. is

  2831. the

  2832. remnant

  2833. of

  2834. mankind

  2835. rather than

  2836. the

  2837. remnant

  2838. of

  2839. Edom

  2840. but

2841. this is not a mistranslation because

  2842. Edom can be used

  2843. representatively to refer to

2844. all those who are not of

  2845. Israel

2846. you can see this in Amos

    Amos 9:12

  2847. chapter 9

  2848. verse 12

  2849. where the remnant of

  2850. Edom is parallel to

  2851. the nations

  2852. remember that

  2853. Edom is just another

  2854. name for

  2855. Esau

  2856. and remember also that

  2857. Israel

  2858. is another name for

  2859. Jacob

  2860. and Jacob

  2861. and Esau

  2862. were brothers

  2863. in Malachi

    Malachi 1:1–4

  2864. chapter 1

  2865. verses 1

  2866. to 4

  2867. it says this

  2868. I have loved you

  2869. says the Lord

  2870. but you say

2871. how have you loved us

  2872. is not Esau

  2873. Jacob's brother

  2874. declares the Lord

  2875. yet I have loved

  2876. Jacob

  2877. but Esau

  2878. I have hated

  2879. I have laid waste

  2880. his hill country

  2881. and left his heritage

  2882. to jackals

  2883. forth of the desert

  2884. Edom says

  2885. we are shattered

  2886. but we will rebuild

  2887. the ruins

  2888. the Lord of hosts

  2889. says they may build

2890. but I will tear down

2891. and they will be called

  2892. the wicked country

  2893. and the people

  2894. with whom the Lord

  2895. is angry forever

2896. why am I reading this

  2897. if Jacob

  2898. or Israel

  2899. stands for

  2900. those who have been

  2901. chosen by God

  2902. Esau

  2903. or Edom

  2904. stands for

2905. all those who have been

  2906. rejected by God

  2907. however

  2908. Amos chapter 9

    Amos 9 chapter mention

  2909. 11 to 12

  2910. prophesied that

  2911. even from

  2912. Edom

  2913. even from

  2914. among the

  2915. rejected nations

  2916. that there will be

  2917. a spiritual remnant

  2918. who will seek

  2919. the Lord

  2920. just as not all

  2921. Jews are saved

  2922. but only a remnant

  2923. among them are saved

  2924. the spiritual Israel

  2925. so not all

  2926. Gentiles are saved

  2927. but only a remnant

  2928. of them

  2929. God will rebuild

  2930. the tent

  2931. of David

  2932. that has fallen

  2933. and I will rebuild

  2934. its ruins

2935. and I will restore it

  2936. this prophecy

  2937. about the

  2938. ruined tent

  2939. of David

  2940. that is rebuilt

  2941. by God

  2942. is fulfilled

  2943. in the death

  2944. the ruin

  2945. and resurrection

  2946. of Jesus Christ

  2947. because Jesus

  2948. is the true Israel

  2949. and he is the

  2950. son of David

  2951. and he is the

  2952. new tent

  2953. of David

  2954. he is the

  2955. fulfillment

  2956. of both the

  2957. nation of Israel

  2958. and the temple

  2959. of Israel

  2960. temple of David

  2961. and he said

  2962. in John 2

  2963. 19

  2964. destroy this

  2965. temple

  2966. and in three

  2967. days

  2968. I will raise

  2969. it up

  2970. when Jesus

  2971. said that

  2972. he was prophesying

  2973. not about

  2974. the literal

  2975. temple

  2976. but about

  2977. his own

  2978. body

  2979. knowing that

  2980. he will be

  2981. crucified

  2982. but raised

  2983. again on

  2984. the third

  2985. day

  2986. Jesus

  2987. is the

  2988. tent

  2989. of David

  2990. that will

  2991. be rebuilt

  2992. from its

  2993. ruins

  2994. so that

  2995. we

  2996. who are

  2997. of the

  2998. wastelands

  2999. of Edom

  3000. the Gentiles

  3001. of ruined

  3002. people

  3003. of people

  3004. without hope

  3005. might call

  3006. upon the

  3007. Lord

  3008. and be

  3009. called

  3010. by his

  3011. name

  3012. I love

  3013. the third

  3014. verse

  3015. of the

  3016. worship

  3017. song

  3018. O Lord

  3019. my rock

  3020. and my

  3021. redeemer

  3022. which captures

  3023. this sentiment

  3024. it says

  3025. O Lord

  3026. my rock

  3027. and my

  3028. redeemer

  3029. gracious

  3030. savior

  3031. of my

  3032. ruined

  3033. life

  3034. my guilt

  3035. and cross

  3036. laid on

  3037. your shoulders

  3038. in my

  3039. place

  3040. you suffered

  3041. bled

  3042. and died

  3043. but that's

  3044. not all

  3045. you rose

  3046. the grave

  3047. and death

  3048. are conquered

  3049. you broke

  3050. the bonds

  3051. of sin

  3052. and shame

  3053. therefore

  3054. James concludes

  3055. in verse 19

  3056. my judgment

  3057. is that we

  3058. should not

  3059. trouble those

  3060. of the

  3061. Gentiles

  3062. who turn

  3063. to God

  3064. remember I

  3065. mentioned to you

  3066. that the

  3067. circumcision

  3068. was a sign

  3069. of the

  3070. covenant

  3071. that God

  3072. had made

  3073. with Abraham

  3074. but because

  3075. of Jesus

  3076. now the

  3077. Gentiles

  3078. who are not

  3079. physical

  3080. descendants

  3081. of Abraham

  3082. are being

  3083. grafted in

  3084. among the

  3085. people of

  3086. God

  3087. and it is

  3088. for this

  3089. reason

  3090. that circumcision

  3091. is no longer

  3092. the sign

  3093. of the

  3094. covenant

  3095. and it's

  3096. absurd to

  3097. require

  3098. Gentiles

  3099. to be

  3100. circumcised

  3101. that's the

  3102. main

  3103. takeaway

  3104. of this

  3105. passage

  3106. that God

  3107. saves a

  3108. remnant

  3109. from both

  3110. Jews

  3111. and Gentiles

  3112. by grace

  3113. through faith

  3114. in Jesus

  3115. Christ

  3116. alone

  3117. now some

  3118. of you guys

  3119. probably have a

  3120. whole bunch

  3121. of questions

  3122. about what

  3123. happens there

  3124. at the end

  3125. verses 19

  3126. to 21

  3127. because

  3128. after all

  3129. this

  3130. the apostles

  3131. will tack on

  3132. a few

  3133. requirements

  3134. that they

  3135. do expect

  3136. the Gentile

  3137. converts

  3138. Christianity

  3139. to meet

  3140. in verses

  3141. 20 to 21

  3142. that's the

  3143. part that's

  3144. complicated

  3145. and unfortunately

  3146. I don't have

  3147. time to explain

  3148. it to you

  3149. until next

  3150. week

  3151. so this

  3152. will be a

  3153. cliffhanger

  3154. and you guys

  3155. will have to

  3156. come back

  3157. to listen

  3158. to the

  3159. sermon

  3160. but I don't

  3161. want you to

  3162. walk away

  3163. from today's

  3164. passage

  3165. and today's

  3166. message

  3167. thinking about

  3168. those

  3169. obligations

  3170. rather than

  3171. the free

  3172. gift of

  3173. the Holy

  3174. Spirit

  3175. the free

  3176. cleansing

  3177. of our

  3178. hearts

  3179. by faith

  3180. and the

  3181. salvation

  3182. that is

  3183. through

  3184. grace

  3185. of our

  3186. Lord

  3187. Jesus

  3188. because

  3189. if you

  3190. walk away

  3191. more

  3192. preoccupied

  3193. with those

  3194. four

  3195. obligations

  3196. than

  3197. this free

  3198. gift

  3199. of grace

  3200. that they've

  3201. been talking

  3202. about all

  3203. along

  3204. then you're

  3205. missing

  3206. the forest

  3207. for the

  3208. trees

  3209. notice how

  3210. James puts

  3211. it in

  3212. verse 19

  3213. we should

  3214. not trouble

  3215. those of

  3216. the Gentiles

  3217. who turn

  3218. to God

  3219. so clearly

  3220. whatever James

  3221. stipulates

  3222. in verses

  3223. 20 to 21

  3224. he does

  3225. not see

  3226. those things

  3227. as troubling

  3228. the Gentiles

  3229. these are

  3230. not additional

  3231. hurdles that the

  3232. Gentiles must

  3233. clear in order

  3234. to be saved

  3235. rather they are

  3236. entailments

  3237. of their

  3238. repentance

  3239. and faith

  3240. in Jesus

  3241. and I'll

  3242. explain that

  3243. further in the

  3244. next

  3245. next sermon

  3246. I'm sorry

  3247. I'm doing this

  3248. to you guys

  3249. but we have

  3250. a presentation

  3251. an update

  3252. from Wes

  3253. and Kendall

  3254. our dear

  3255. members

  3256. who are

  3257. going to be

  3258. traveling on a

  3259. short term

  3260. mission trip

  3261. to Romania

  3262. on August

  3263. 19th

  3264. this Thursday

  3265. and so they

  3266. have an update

  3267. for us

  3268. which actually

  3269. is surprisingly

  3270. relevant

  3271. God somehow

  3272. orchestrated this

  3273. way to this

  3274. sermon

  3275. message

  3276. so if you

  3277. come up

  3278. please

  3279. share the

  3280. testimony

  3281. it would be

  3282. great

  3283. to Center

  3284. who

  3285. are

  3286. on the

  3287. call

  3288. the

  3289. ần

  3290. YOU

  3291. Thank you.
