  1. that are far beyond what I have myself attained in my life.

  2. But Lord, I stand here

  3. because I have received this ministry

  4. by your grace.

  5. Not because of my worthiness,

  6. but because you are gracious and merciful.

  7. So I ask now that you would empower the preaching of your word,

  8. that your powerful word would have its intended effect

  9. as your spirit works in us.

  10. Exalt the name of your son, Jesus Christ.

  11. Fill our hearts with overflowing love of Christ,

  12. of for Christ.

  13. In his precious name we pray.

  14. Amen.

  15. In Acts chapter 20, verses 17 to 28.

    Acts 20:17–28

  16. Now from Miletus, he sent to Ephesus

  17. and called the elders of the church to come to him.

  18. And when they came to him, he said to them,

  19. you yourselves know how I lived among you

  20. the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia,

  21. serving the Lord with all humility

  22. and with tears and with trials

  23. that happened to me through the plots of the Jews.

  24. How I did not shrink from declaring to you

  25. anything that was profitable

  26. and teaching you in public and from house to house,

  27. testifying both to Jews and to Greeks

  28. of repentance toward God

  29. and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  30. And now behold, I am going to Jerusalem,

  31. constrained by the Spirit,

  32. not knowing what will happen to me there,

  33. except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me

  34. in every city that imprisonment

  35. and afflictions await me.

  36. But I do not account my life of any value,

  37. nor as precious to myself,

  38. if only I may fit my course

  39. in the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus,

  40. to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

  41. And now behold,

  42. I know that none of you among whom I have gone

  43. about proclaiming the kingdom

  44. will see my face again.

  45. Therefore, I testify to you this day

  46. that I am innocent of the blood of all,

  47. for I did not shrink from declaring to you

  48. the whole counsel of God.

  49. Pay careful attention to yourselves

  50. and to all the flock

  51. in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers,

  52. to care for the church of God,

  53. which he obtained with his own blood.

  54. I know that after my departure,

  55. fierce wolves will come in among you,

  56. not sparing the flock.

  57. And from among your own selves

  58. will arise men speaking twisted things

  59. to draw away the disciples after them.

  60. Therefore, be alert,

  61. remembering that for three years

  62. I did not seize night or day

  63. to admonish everyone with tears.

  64. And now I commend you to God

  65. and to the word of his grace,

  66. which is able to build you up

  67. and to give you the inheritance

  68. among all those who are sanctified.

  69. I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel.

  70. You yourselves know that these ones

  71. minister to my necessities

  72. and to those who are with me.

  73. In all things, I have shown you

  74. that by working hard in this way,

  75. we must help the weak

  76. and remember the words of the Lord Jesus,

  77. how he himself said,

  78. it is more blessed to give than to receive.

  79. And when he had said these things,

  80. he knelt down and prayed with them all.

  81. And there was much weeping on the part of all.

  82. They embraced Paul and kissed him,

  83. being sorrowful most of all

  84. because of the word he had spoken

  85. that they would not see his face again.

  86. And they accompanied him to the ship.

  87. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  88. Almost every single guest preacher we have

  89. in our church have commented to me

  90. that we have a very attentive congregation,

  91. that you guys listen to sermons very well.

  92. But if I were to tell you

  93. that this is the last sermon

  94. I will ever preach to you,

  95. I think you'd be even more attentive

  96. because last words, parting words are weighty.

  97. And people share what is dearest to their hearts.

  98. This passage contains Paul's last words

  99. to the church in Ephesus.

  100. And it's the only one of Paul's speeches

  101. recorded in the book of Acts

  102. that's directed entirely to Christians.

  103. As verse 16 says,

  104. Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus

  105. so that he might not have to spend time in Asia

  106. for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem

  107. if possible on the day of Pentecost.

  108. But during his layover at Miletus,

  109. he just couldn't pass up the opportunity

  110. to address the elders of the Ephesian church

  111. one more time.

  112. And so he asks them to make the 20-mile journey south

  113. to come to him in verse 17.

  114. And this is how he exhorted him.

  115. This is his main exhortation.

  116. Remember that elders are called to serve the Lord

  117. by shepherding his church.

  118. That's the main point of this, his Paul's address.

  119. Even though God will only call some of you

  120. to be elders of a local church,

  121. since elders are commanded in 1 Peter 5, 2-3

  122. to shepherd the flock of God

  123. and be examples to the flock.

  124. And because Ephesians 4, 10-11 tells us

  125. that God raises up shepherds and teachers

  126. in the church not to do all the work of ministry themselves,

  127. but to equip the saints for the work of ministry,

  128. for building up the body of Christ.

  129. Much of what Paul says here

  130. to the elders of the Ephesian church

  131. apply to every single Christian.

  132. So elders are called to serve the Lord

  133. by shepherding his church.

  134. So we're going to look at those two in part.

  135. First, the servant of the Lord and his word.

  136. That's what elders are.

  137. They're also shepherds of the church of God.

  138. Verses 18-19 say that

  139. when the elders of the Ephesian church came to Paul,

  140. he said to them,

  141. You yourselves know how I lived among you

  142. the whole time from the first day

  143. that I set foot in Asia,

  144. serving the Lord with all humility

  145. and with tears and with trials

  146. that happened to me through the plots of the Jews.

  147. Paul's farewell speech here

  148. is very heavily autobiographical

  149. because he's exhorting the Ephesian elders

  150. to follow the example that he set for them

  151. while he was ministering among them.

  152. He's saying, in effect,

  153. Be imitators of me as I am of Christ.

  154. And Paul reminds them,

  155. You yourselves know this,

  156. how I lived among you the whole time

  157. from the first day that I set foot in Asia.

  158. Paul was not a recluse.

  159. He did not live in splendid isolation

  160. in monastery or a parsonage somewhere

  161. appearing once a week to preach

  162. and then disappearing again,

  163. sheltered from the needs and sins

  164. in the lives of the Ephesian church.

  165. He lived among them.

  166. And Paul's lifestyle was consistent.

  167. He was a part of their lives.

  168. And the whole time,

  169. from the first day he set foot in Asia,

  170. he lived in this consistent way.

  171. And how did Paul live?

  172. He says,

  173. Serving the Lord with all humility

  174. and with tears and with trials

  175. that happened to me

  176. through the plots of the Jews.

  177. The Greek word that is translated

  178. serve here is not the usual word

  179. that is used in the New Testament

  180. for serving or ministering to someone.

  181. It's a word that actually means

  182. to serve as someone's slave.

  183. It means literally to be owned by another,

  184. to be a slave, to be subjected.

  185. In many of his letters,

  186. Paul describes himself proudly

  187. as a slave of Christ.

  188. He lived as a servant

  189. who was completely disposed

  190. to the will of his Lord.

  191. That's what it means to serve with humility,

  192. to renounce one's right to rule,

  193. to be subject, subject oneself

  194. to the lordship of another.

  195. And this is why,

  196. precisely why,

  197. the ancient Greeks despised humility.

  198. If you search ancient Greek literature,

  199. you will not come across a single instance

  200. where the word humility

  201. has positive associations.

  202. The ancient Greeks saw humility

  203. as a bad thing,

  204. a lowly and contemptible thing,

  205. something that is only fitting for a slave.

  206. The only strange group of ancient people

  207. that extolled humility as a virtue

  208. were the Christians.

  209. And that's because they followed Jesus,

  210. who said,

  211. whoever would be great among you

  212. must be your servant.

  213. And whoever would be first among you

  214. must be your slave.

  215. Even as the Son of Man

  216. came not to be served,

  217. but to serve

  218. and to give his life

  219. as a ransom for many.

  220. An elder,

  221. and every Christian for that matter,

  222. is a servant of the Lord,

  223. a slave of Christ.

  224. Have you renounced your right to rule?

  225. Have you forfeited your power

  226. to set your own agenda?

  227. Paul knows that ministry

  228. is not about himself.

  229. He doesn't invite the Ephesian elders

  230. to admire his accomplishments.

  231. He has no accolades to point to.

  232. Instead,

  233. he points to his core identity

  234. as a slave of the Lord Jesus.

  235. He says,

  236. remember how I lived among you

  237. as a slave,

  238. serving with all humility.

  239. That's the call of the Christian.

  240. Paul also says

  241. that he served the Lord

  242. with tears and with trials

  243. that happened to him

  244. through the plots of the Jews.

  245. Tears and trials

  246. suggests that Paul endured

  247. much suffering and sadness

  248. in service to his Lord,

  249. much of it due to the persecutions

  250. and the plots of the Jews.

  251. In 2 Timothy chapter 4,

    2 Timothy 4:1–4

  252. verses 1 to 4,

  253. Paul charges Timothy

  254. with a series of

  255. pastoral responsibilities.

  256. These are the things

  257. you must do as a pastor,

  258. including preach the word,

  259. be ready in season

  260. and out of season,

  261. reprove,

  262. rebuke,

  263. and exhort

  264. with complete patience

  265. and teaching.

  266. Do the work of an evangelist.

  267. Fulfill your ministry.

  268. But sandwiched

  269. in the middle of that list,

  270. you find something surprising.

  271. The command,

  272. endure suffering.

  273. That's one of

  274. the job requirements

  275. of a pastor.

  276. This is why at the time

  277. of Paul's conversion,

  278. chapter 9,

  279. God said of him,

  280. I will show him

  281. how much he must suffer

  282. for the sake of my name.

  283. If we are serving the Lord,

  284. we will suffer

  285. because there will be opposition

  286. from the world,

  287. from the flesh,

  288. and from the devil.

  289. But we are commanded

  290. to endure.

  291. And that's what Paul did.

  292. And no,

  293. it was not easy.

  294. Paul was not a stoic.

  295. He didn't meet suffering

  296. with detached indifference

  297. or unfeeling callousness.

  298. He says he endured it

  299. with tears.

  300. All the setbacks,

  301. all the disappointments,

  302. all the suffering.

  303. And then in verses 20 to 27,

  304. Paul tells us the ways

  305. in which he served the Lord.

  306. So this section

  307. is structured chiastically,

  308. meaning the first half of it

  309. is mirrored by the second half.

  310. And then there's one element

  311. in the middle,

  312. which is the core,

  313. the most important part

  314. that he's trying to emphasize

  315. that stands by itself

  316. that doesn't have

  317. a matching element.

  318. So if you look at verse 20,

  319. he says,

  320. I did not shrink

  321. from declaring the word of God.

  322. And that's matched

  323. by verse 27.

  324. I did not shrink

  325. from declaring

  326. the whole counsel of God.

  327. Verse 21,

  328. he says,

  329. I testify to both Jews

  330. and Greeks.

  331. And in verse 26,

  332. he says,

  333. I testify that I am innocent

  334. of the blood of all

  335. because he's spoken

  336. to all of them.

  337. And then verses 22 to 23,

  338. he says,

  339. and now behold,

  340. I am going to Jerusalem.

  341. And then in verse 25,

  342. he says,

  343. and now behold,

  344. none of you will see me again.

  345. And that leaves verse 24

  346. by itself.

  347. And that's what he's really

  348. trying to hammer home.

  349. And it is that I do not

  350. account my life

  351. of any value.

  352. If only I may finish

  353. the course.

  354. So first,

  355. Paul says in verse 20,

  356. I did not shrink

  357. from declaring to you

  358. anything that was profitable

  359. and teaching you in public

  360. and from house to house.

  361. That's matched by verse 27.

  362. I did not shrink

  363. from declaring to you

  364. the whole counsel of God.

  365. Why might someone shrink

  366. from declaring

  367. the whole counsel of God?

  368. Isn't it profitable for them?

  369. Why might some people

  370. shrink from telling people

  371. what is good for them?

  372. It's because as Paul warns

  373. in Timothy,

  374. in 2 Timothy 4.3,

  375. some people will not

  376. endure sound teaching,

  377. but having itching ears,

  378. they will accumulate

  379. for themselves teachers

  380. to soothe their own passions.

  381. People who want to pursue

  382. their own selfish desires

  383. and sinful passions

  384. don't want to hear

  385. profitable teaching

  386. from God's word.

  387. They don't want to be

  388. convicted or challenged.

  389. They don't want to hear

  390. the whole counsel of God.

  391. Instead,

  392. they want to cherry pick

  393. passages they like.

  394. They accumulate for themselves

  395. teachers who will

  396. scratch their itches

  397. and say things

  398. that suit their desires.

  399. This is why some elders

  400. might shrink from declaring

  401. the whole counsel of God.

  402. because if they preach

  403. from certain passages

  404. that go against

  405. the spirit of the times,

  406. some of their church members

  407. might leave.

  408. Some of the visitors

  409. might never come back.

  410. Some of their church,

  411. well, outsiders

  412. who are observing

  413. might ridicule them,

  414. criticize them,

  415. maybe even persecute them.

  416. But Paul says

  417. he did not shrink

  418. from declaring

  419. everything that was profitable.

  420. because rather than

  421. fearing people,

  422. Paul loved people.

  423. So whether they

  424. wanted to hear it or not,

  425. he declared to them

  426. anything that was

  427. profitable to them.

  428. And Paul didn't have

  429. the option of not

  430. declaring the whole

  431. counsel of God

  432. because,

  433. as we said,

  434. he was a servant

  435. of the Lord Jesus.

  436. A servant

  437. who is sent out

  438. to deliver a message

  439. for his master

  440. does not have

  441. the power

  442. to add to the message

  443. or subtract

  444. from the message.

  445. He's merely

  446. a messenger.

  447. He doesn't get

  448. to choose

  449. the message

  450. because he is

  451. already a slave

  452. of Christ.

  453. He cannot

  454. be enslaved

  455. to the opinions

  456. of man.

  457. And Paul declared

  458. the whole counsel

  459. of God

  460. to all without

  461. distinction.

  462. He says in verse 21

  463. that he testified

  464. both to Jews

  465. and to Greeks

  466. of repentance

  467. toward God

  468. and of faith

  469. in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  470. Paul preached

  471. the gospel,

  472. the good news

  473. of Jesus Christ

  474. that all who

  475. turn,

  476. repent of their sins

  477. and turn to Jesus

  478. in faith

  479. by believing

  480. in the life

  481. and death

  482. and resurrection

  483. of the Christ

  484. that they might

  485. be saved.

  486. And he preached

  487. this message

  488. to both Jews

  489. in the synagogues

  490. and to the Greeks

  491. in the forum.

  492. An ambassador

  493. does not get

  494. to choose

  495. which country

  496. he travels to

  497. or whom

  498. he speaks to.

  499. He goes

  500. wherever

  501. the president

  502. or the king

  503. sends him to go.

  504. He speaks to

  505. whomever

  506. the king

  507. sends him

  508. to speak to.

  509. Likewise,

  510. Paul,

  511. because he's a servant

  512. of the Lord Jesus,

  513. he does not have

  514. the option

  515. of choosing

  516. his audience,

  517. of discriminating

  518. between Jews

  519. and Gentiles.

  520. And verse 21

  521. is matched

  522. by verse 26.

  523. Therefore,

  524. I testify to you

  525. this day

  526. that I am innocent

  527. of the blood

  528. of all.

  529. Paul believed

  530. that it is

  531. his responsibility

  532. to proclaim

  533. the gospel

  534. because if people

  535. perish without

  536. hearing it,

  537. that he'd have

  538. blood on his hands.

  539. So he faithfully

  540. warned people

  541. and he's now

  542. washing his hands,

  543. figuratively,

  544. washing his hands

  545. clean.

  546. I have warned them.

  547. I have preached

  548. the gospel

  549. to both Jews

  550. and Greeks.

  551. So if you don't

  552. repent and believe

  553. in Jesus,

  554. then the blood

  555. is on your hands,

  556. not mine.

  557. I am innocent

  558. of the blood

  559. of all,

  560. is what Paul

  561. is saying.

  562. The elders

  563. of the church

  564. and all Christians

  565. for the matter

  566. are called

  567. to testify

  568. or bear witness

  569. to the Lord Jesus.

  570. We may not go

  571. only to the groups

  572. of people

  573. that we share

  574. a natural affinity

  575. with,

  576. people who look

  577. like us,

  578. people who

  579. share our interests,

  580. people who have

  581. our social

  582. or economic

  583. standing,

  584. people who share

  585. our political views.

  586. You know,

  587. we must testify

  588. to all peoples

  589. without distinction

  590. because we are

  591. servants of the Lord Jesus.

  592. And Paul continues

  593. to speak of his

  594. servitude to God

  595. in verses 22 to 23.

  596. He says,

  597. And now behold,

  598. I am going to Jerusalem

  599. constrained by the Spirit,

  600. not knowing

  601. what will happen

  602. to me there,

  603. except that the Holy Spirit

  604. testifies to me

  605. in every city

  606. that imprisonment

  607. and afflictions

  608. await me.

  609. This is matched

  610. by verse 25,

  611. which begins

  612. with the exact same phrase,

  613. And now behold,

  614. I know that none

  615. of you among

  616. whom I have gone

  617. about proclaiming

  618. the kingdom

  619. will see my face again.

  620. Paul is headed

  621. to Jerusalem

  622. and therefore

  623. he knows that he

  624. will not see

  625. the Ephesian elders,

  626. Ephesian believers again.

  627. And so he even

  628. acknowledges

  629. that the Holy Spirit

  630. has testified to him

  631. that imprisonment

  632. and afflictions

  633. await him

  634. in Jerusalem.

  635. But then why

  636. is he going

  637. to Jerusalem?

  638. He says he is

  639. constrained

  640. by the Spirit

  641. to go and bear witness

  642. to the people there.

  643. The word constrained

  644. literally means

  645. to be bound

  646. or imprisoned.

  647. The same word

  648. is used later

  649. in Acts 21,

    Acts 21:11

  650. verse 11,

  651. when Agabus prophesies

  652. of Paul's impending

  653. imprisonment

  654. in Jerusalem.

  655. It's the same word

  656. that was used

  657. three times

  658. in Acts 9,

  659. to describe

  660. how Paul,

  661. prior to his conversion,

  662. was rounding up

  663. Christians

  664. and binding them

  665. and committing

  666. them to prison.

  667. And so there's

  668. a contrast here

  669. between verse 22

  670. and verse 23.

  671. Why would Paul

  672. travel to Jerusalem

  673. where he knows

  674. he will be imprisoned?

  675. The answer

  676. is that he is

  677. already bound

  678. by the Spirit,

  679. constrained

  680. by the Spirit

  681. of God

  682. to go.

  683. He has no choice

  684. because he is

  685. a servant

  686. of the Lord Jesus.

  687. He is a prisoner

  688. of the Spirit.

  689. But he does it

  690. willingly,

  691. joyfully.

  692. There's no human being

  693. because all human beings

  694. are sinful

  695. who are fit

  696. to be masters,

  697. to own slaves,

  698. but the Lord Jesus

  699. who is perfect

  700. and righteous

  701. and just

  702. and gracious

  703. is a worthy master

  704. that Christians

  705. serve joyfully,

  706. willingly.

  707. Paul was a happy

  708. servant of the Lord.

  709. And so we've seen

  710. three things so far.

  711. One, Paul does not

  712. get to pick

  713. and choose

  714. what he preaches.

  715. He must preach

  716. the whole counsel

  717. of God.

  718. Two, Paul does not

  719. get to choose

  720. whom he preaches to.

  721. He must preach

  722. to all,

  723. to both Jews

  724. and Gentiles.

  725. And three,

  726. Paul does not

  727. get to choose

  728. where he preaches

  729. the gospel.

  730. He must go

  731. where the Spirit

  732. of God constrains

  733. him to go.

  734. This is Paul's

  735. autobiographical sketch.

  736. It's a picture

  737. of a man

  738. who is in total

  739. submission

  740. to God.

  741. Paul's reminding

  742. the Ephesian elders,

  743. it's not about

  744. doing what you want.

  745. Remember how I lived

  746. among you,

  747. not saying

  748. whatever I want

  749. or associating

  750. with whomever I want

  751. or going

  752. wherever I want.

  753. No, but saying

  754. and doing

  755. and going

  756. only where God

  757. would have

  758. me go.

  759. That's what it means

  760. to be an elder.

  761. And all of this

  762. comes to a climax

  763. in verse 24,

  764. which is the center

  765. of this

  766. chiasis structure

  767. that Luke

  768. is intentionally

  769. emphasizing.

  770. but I do not

  771. account my life

  772. of any value

  773. nor as precious

  774. to myself

  775. if only I may

  776. finish my course

  777. in the ministry

  778. that I have received

  779. from the Lord Jesus

  780. to testify

  781. through the gospel

  782. of the grace

  783. of God.

  784. the world

  785. tells us

  786. that we should

  787. prioritize

  788. and protect

  789. our own lives

  790. over everything else

  791. and that makes

  792. perfect sense

  793. from their perspective

  794. because they believe

  795. that this life

  796. is all there is.

  797. But for Christians

  798. who believe

  799. in eternal

  800. resurrection life

  801. after death,

  802. for Christians

  803. who believe

  804. that our ultimate

  805. rewards are in heaven,

  806. there is something

  807. more valuable,

  808. something more

  809. precious

  810. than life itself

  811. and that is

  812. to finish the course,

  813. the race,

  814. to fulfill

  815. our mission

  816. and to testify

  817. to the gospel

  818. of the grace

  819. of God.

  820. That's why Paul

  821. uses this metaphor

  822. of the race

  823. to finish my course.

  824. Years later

  825. at the end

  826. of his life,

  827. Paul writes

  828. in 2 Timothy 4,

  829. 7 to 8,

  830. I have fought

  831. the good fight,

  832. I have finished

  833. the race,

  834. I have kept

  835. the faith,

  836. henceforth

  837. there is laid up

  838. for me

  839. the crown

  840. of righteousness

  841. which the Lord,

  842. the righteous judge,

  843. will award me

  844. on that day

  845. and not only

  846. to me

  847. but also to all

  848. who have loved

  849. his appearing.

  850. The crown

  851. of righteousness

  852. is reserved

  853. only for those

  854. who finish

  855. the race.

  856. Salvation

  857. is reserved

  858. for only

  859. those who

  860. persevere

  861. to the end.

  862. Matthew 24,

  863. 13.

  864. Eternal glory

  865. is reserved

  866. for those

  867. who endure

  868. the momentary

  869. afflictions

  870. of this life.

  871. 2 Corinthians 4,

  872. 17.

  873. Professional

  874. athletes

  875. would not endure

  876. the afflictions

  877. of strict diets

  878. and grueling

  879. workouts

  880. day after day,

  881. week after week,

  882. year after year

  883. if they didn't

  884. know that there

  885. is a trophy

  886. or a medal

  887. waiting for them

  888. at the end.

  889. But they do it

  890. for a crown

  891. that perishes.

  892. But we do it

  893. for an eternal crown.

  894. Likewise,

  895. Christians cannot

  896. endure.

  897. We cannot

  898. endure to the end

  899. and believe

  900. that faithfulness

  901. to Christ

  902. is better than life

  903. unless we keep

  904. the end

  905. in sight,

  906. keep eternity

  907. in view.

  908. It's only

  909. in light

  910. of the eternal

  911. rewards

  912. that Christ

  913. has for us

  914. that we can say

  915. along with Paul,

  916. I do not account

  917. my life

  918. of any value

  919. nor as precious

  920. to myself.

  921. That phrase

  922. is quite emphatic.

  923. It's literally

  924. my life

  925. is not worth

  926. a single word.

  927. an average person

  928. speaks,

  929. they say 7,000 words

  930. per day.

  931. A lot of people

  932. considerably more

  933. than that.

  934. That's 2,555,000

  935. words per year.

  936. Expand that

  937. to a lifetime.

  938. That's a lot

  939. of words.

  940. And Paul says,

  941. my life

  942. is not worth

  943. even one word.

  944. Not a one,

  945. it's not a single word.

  946. if only I get

  947. to finish

  948. the course

  949. that my Lord

  950. has entrusted

  951. to me.

  952. Compared

  953. to fulfilling

  954. our God-given

  955. calling

  956. to bear witness

  957. to Jesus,

  958. my life

  959. has no value.

  960. It's not

  961. precious to me.

  962. When there are

  963. many tears

  964. and trials

  965. in your life

  966. as surely

  967. many of you

  968. have,

  969. when you are

  970. paying the price

  971. of following

  972. Jesus,

  973. when serving

  974. the Lord

  975. is full of

  976. pain and suffering,

  977. remind yourself

  978. of this,

  979. my life

  980. is not my own.

  981. Jesus

  982. already

  983. purchased me

  984. with his

  985. own blood.

  986. I am a

  987. slave of Christ,

  988. completely disposed

  989. to the will

  990. of my master.

  991. And Jesus

  992. is more

  993. precious

  994. than my life.

  995. Jesus,

  996. I would

  997. rather die

  998. than give up

  999. serving him.

  1000. The long

  1001. life

  1002. is not

  1003. a Christian

  1004. aspiration.

  1005. The faithful

  1006. life

  1007. is the Christian

  1008. aspiration.

  1009. church.

  1010. Having

  1011. pointed the

  1012. elders of

  1013. the Ephesian

  1014. church to

  1015. the example

  1016. of how he

  1017. conducted himself

  1018. among them

  1019. as a servant

  1020. of the Lord

  1021. and his word,

  1022. Paul now

  1023. exhorts them

  1024. directly as

  1025. shepherds of

  1026. the church

  1027. of God.

  1028. So Paul's

  1029. addressing here

  1030. the elders

  1031. of the church

  1032. in Ephesus

  1033. as we saw,

  1034. and he says

  1035. in verse 28

  1036. that they were

  1037. appointed

  1038. overseers

  1039. of the church

  1040. by the Holy

  1041. Spirit.

  1042. And the

  1043. overseer

  1044. is the

  1045. Greek word

  1046. from which

  1047. we get

  1048. the English

  1049. word

  1050. episcopate

  1051. which refers

  1052. to bishops.

  1053. And then

  1054. Paul also

  1055. uses a

  1056. shepherding

  1057. imagery

  1058. throughout

  1059. verses 28

  1060. to 30

  1061. exhorting

  1062. the elders

  1063. to pay

  1064. careful

  1065. attention

  1066. to all

  1067. the flock

  1068. mourning

  1069. them of

  1070. fierce wolves

  1071. that will

  1072. devour

  1073. the flock.

  1074. So this

  1075. shows

  1076. that the

  1077. three

  1078. terms

  1079. that the

  1080. Bible

  1081. uses

  1082. elders

  1083. overseers

  1084. or bishops

  1085. shepherds

  1086. pastors

  1087. they're

  1088. actually

  1089. all terms

  1090. that are

  1091. used

  1092. interchangeably

  1093. to refer

  1094. to a

  1095. single

  1096. office

  1097. in the

  1098. church

  1099. that

  1100. of the

  1101. office

  1102. of elder.

  1103. They're

  1104. not

  1105. separate

  1106. offices

  1107. in the

  1108. church.

  1109. An

  1110. elder

  1111. is an

  1112. overseer

  1113. is a

  1114. pastor

  1115. and this

  1116. section

  1117. wonderfully

  1118. captures

  1119. what

  1120. pastoral

  1121. ministry

  1122. is all

  1123. about.

  1124. In

  1125. their

  1126. book

  1127. The

  1128. Deliberate

  1129. Church

  1130. Mark

  1131. Dever

  1132. and

  1133. Paul

  1134. Alexander

  1135. summarize

  1136. the

  1137. responsibilities

  1138. of a

  1139. pastor

  1140. with

  1141. helpful

  1142. alliteration.

  1143. He

  1144. says

  1145. they

  1146. guide

  1147. they

  1148. guard

  1149. and

  1150. they

  1151. graze.

  1152. And we

  1153. see those

  1154. three tasks

  1155. here in this

  1156. passage.

  1157. First he

  1158. talks about

  1159. guiding or

  1160. governing the

  1161. flock in

  1162. verse 28.

  1163. Pay careful

  1164. attention to

  1165. yourselves and

  1166. to all the

  1167. flock in

  1168. which the

  1169. Holy Spirit

  1170. has made

  1171. you overseers

  1172. to care for

  1173. the church

  1174. of God

  1175. which he

  1176. obtained with

  1177. his own

  1178. blood.

  1179. pastors

  1180. must

  1181. not be

  1182. negligent

  1183. or

  1184. complacent

  1185. in their

  1186. care for

  1187. the

  1188. flock.

  1189. They

  1190. must pay

  1191. careful

  1192. attention

  1193. to all

  1194. the

  1195. flock.

  1196. They

  1197. must know

  1198. the

  1199. conditions

  1200. of the

  1201. flock

  1202. who is

  1203. starving,

  1204. who is

  1205. weak,

  1206. who is

  1207. injured,

  1208. who is

  1209. hurting,

  1210. who is

  1211. going

  1212. astray,

  1213. and they

  1214. must care

  1215. for the

  1216. whole

  1217. flock,

  1218. not just

  1219. a part

  1220. of it.

  1221. Jews

  1222. and

  1223. Gentiles,

  1224. men

  1225. and

  1226. women,

  1227. rich

  1228. and

  1229. poor,

  1230. old

  1231. and

  1232. young.

  1233. But notice

  1234. that the

  1235. pastors are

  1236. not only

  1237. to pay

  1238. careful

  1239. attention

  1240. to the

  1241. flock,

  1242. they are

  1243. also

  1244. commanded

  1245. to pay

  1246. careful

  1247. attention

  1248. to

  1249. themselves.

  1250. This is

  1251. similar to

  1252. Paul's

  1253. exhortation

  1254. in 1 Timothy

  1255. 4, 16,

  1256. keep a

  1257. close watch

  1258. on yourself

  1259. and on

  1260. the teaching.

  1261. Persist

  1262. in this,

  1263. for by so

  1264. doing you

  1265. will save

  1266. both yourself

  1267. and your

  1268. hearers.

  1269. If

  1270. pastors

  1271. don't pay

  1272. careful

  1273. attention

  1274. to their

  1275. own

  1276. lives

  1277. and their

  1278. own

  1279. doctrine,

  1280. then they

  1281. might

  1282. mislead

  1283. their flock

  1284. by their

  1285. example

  1286. and by

  1287. their

  1288. teaching,

  1289. and that's

  1290. dangerous.

  1291. So they

  1292. must pay

  1293. careful

  1294. attention

  1295. to

  1296. themselves

  1297. and to

  1298. all the

  1299. flock.

  1300. Ancient

  1301. Near Eastern

  1302. shepherds

  1303. typically led

  1304. the sheep

  1305. from the

  1306. front,

  1307. not from

  1308. the back.

  1309. So the

  1310. pastors

  1311. of the

  1312. church

  1313. must lead

  1314. by example.

  1315. Lest

  1316. after

  1317. preaching

  1318. to

  1319. others

  1320. they

  1321. themselves

  1322. should

  1323. be

  1324. disqualified.

  1325. Christian

  1326. author

  1327. Paul

  1328. Tripp

  1329. writes

  1330. in his

  1331. book

  1332. Dangerous

  1333. Calling,

  1334. which is

  1335. about

  1336. pastoral

  1337. ministry,

  1338. that what

  1339. gives a

  1340. ministry

  1341. its

  1342. motivations,

  1343. perseverance,

  1344. humility,

  1345. joy,

  1346. tenderness,

  1347. passion,

  1348. and grace

  1349. is the

  1350. devotional

  1351. life of

  1352. the one

  1353. doing

  1354. ministry.

  1355. pastors

  1356. must

  1357. pay

  1358. careful

  1359. attention

  1360. to

  1361. themselves

  1362. and to

  1363. all the

  1364. flock.

  1365. And two

  1366. things

  1367. convey the

  1368. gravity of

  1369. pastoral

  1370. ministry.

  1371. First is

  1372. this,

  1373. that the

  1374. fact that

  1375. the pastors

  1376. are appointed

  1377. by God

  1378. himself,

  1379. it says

  1380. the Holy

  1381. Spirit has

  1382. made you

  1383. overseers.

  1384. of course

  1385. there is a

  1386. process by

  1387. which the

  1388. local church

  1389. recognizes and

  1390. appoints

  1391. elders,

  1392. but it is

  1393. ultimately God

  1394. who calls up

  1395. and raises

  1396. elders.

  1397. That means

  1398. elders are not

  1399. their own

  1400. boss.

  1401. God is

  1402. their boss.

  1403. So they

  1404. better pay

  1405. careful attention

  1406. to the work

  1407. that they do.

  1408. The second

  1409. thing that

  1410. conveys the

  1411. gravity of

  1412. pastoral

  1413. ministry is

  1414. the precious

  1415. value of

  1416. the people

  1417. of God.

  1418. Pastors are

  1419. the care

  1420. for the

  1421. church

  1422. of God

  1423. which he

  1424. obtained

  1425. with his

  1426. own

  1427. blood.

  1428. This is a

  1429. reference to

  1430. the atoning

  1431. work of

  1432. Jesus Christ,

  1433. his death,

  1434. his resurrection.

  1435. God the

  1436. Father didn't

  1437. die on the

  1438. cross,

  1439. but since

  1440. the Son

  1441. of God,

  1442. the second

  1443. person of

  1444. the Trinity

  1445. did die

  1446. on the

  1447. cross,

  1448. it is not

  1449. inaccurate to

  1450. say that

  1451. God obtained

  1452. his church

  1453. with his

  1454. own blood.

  1455. God,

  1456. this is

  1457. why the

  1458. church is

  1459. the church

  1460. of God.

  1461. It is not

  1462. my church.

  1463. It is not

  1464. the pastor's

  1465. church,

  1466. it is the

  1467. church of

  1468. God,

  1469. because he

  1470. paid for

  1471. it.

  1472. And the

  1473. price you

  1474. pay for

  1475. something

  1476. communicates

  1477. the value

  1478. of that

  1479. item.

  1480. Think of

  1481. the most

  1482. valuable

  1483. possession

  1484. that you

  1485. have.

  1486. maybe a

  1487. car,

  1488. computer,

  1489. a house.

  1490. You

  1491. probably

  1492. protect it,

  1493. maintain it,

  1494. and perhaps

  1495. even insure

  1496. it.

  1497. The

  1498. church of

  1499. God was

  1500. purchased

  1501. with the

  1502. blood of

  1503. God's

  1504. own

  1505. Son.

  1506. Jesus,

  1507. whose life

  1508. has infinite,

  1509. inestimable

  1510. value.

  1511. That means the

  1512. Christian brothers

  1513. and sisters

  1514. sitting to your

  1515. left and to your

  1516. right,

  1517. the sheep of

  1518. God's pasture,

  1519. sure,

  1520. they might be

  1521. bruised and

  1522. battered,

  1523. maybe even

  1524. malnourished.

  1525. maybe they

  1526. don't appear

  1527. very valuable

  1528. to you.

  1529. You might

  1530. think they're

  1531. not worth

  1532. your time

  1533. and investment,

  1534. but don't

  1535. let your

  1536. eyes deceive

  1537. you.

  1538. Remember the

  1539. price God

  1540. paid for

  1541. them.

  1542. God gave

  1543. his only

  1544. Son.

  1545. The Lord

  1546. Jesus obtained

  1547. them with

  1548. his own

  1549. blood,

  1550. and so the

  1551. elders must

  1552. govern and

  1553. guide the

  1554. flock of

  1555. God with

  1556. care.

  1557. The second

  1558. thing elders

  1559. must do is

  1560. to guard

  1561. the flock.

  1562. Paul warns

  1563. them in

  1564. verses 29

  1565. to 31,

  1566. I know

  1567. that after

  1568. my departure

  1569. fierce wolves

  1570. will come

  1571. in among you

  1572. and not

  1573. sparing the

  1574. flock,

  1575. and from

  1576. among your

  1577. own selves

  1578. will arise

  1579. men speaking

  1580. twisted things

  1581. to draw away

  1582. the disciples

  1583. after them.

  1584. Therefore

  1585. be alert,

  1586. remembering

  1587. that for

  1588. three years

  1589. I did not

  1590. seize night

  1591. or day to

  1592. admonish

  1593. everyone with

  1594. tears.

  1595. Some of

  1596. these fierce

  1597. wolves will

  1598. come in

  1599. from the

  1600. outside,

  1601. but others,

  1602. Paul says,

  1603. will rise up

  1604. from among

  1605. your own

  1606. selves,

  1607. from within

  1608. the Ephesian

  1609. church itself.

  1610. A telltale sign

  1611. of a wolf is

  1612. that he speaks

  1613. twisted things.

  1614. He doesn't

  1615. speak the

  1616. straightforward

  1617. truth of

  1618. God's word.

  1619. Instead,

  1620. he speaks

  1621. twisted things

  1622. in order to

  1623. draw away

  1624. the disciples

  1625. after them.

  1626. Their ultimate

  1627. goal is

  1628. division and

  1629. schism.

  1630. They're

  1631. interested in

  1632. making disciples

  1633. who follow

  1634. after them.

  1635. This is a

  1636. sobering reality

  1637. and I think

  1638. Paul speaks

  1639. so confidently

  1640. and definitively

  1641. in verse 29.

  1642. I know,

  1643. he says,

  1644. I know that

  1645. after my

  1646. departure,

  1647. fierce wolves

  1648. have come.

  1649. I think he

  1650. could say that

  1651. because he

  1652. knows that

  1653. wherever there

  1654. are sheep,

  1655. there will

  1656. be wolves.

  1657. and it's

  1658. for this

  1659. reason that

  1660. pastors must

  1661. be alert.

  1662. But it's

  1663. important to

  1664. note that

  1665. there is a

  1666. difference

  1667. between sheep

  1668. that disagree

  1669. with the

  1670. shepherd and

  1671. an actual

  1672. divisive wolf.

  1673. Being watchful

  1674. of wolves

  1675. and being

  1676. cynical and

  1677. suspicious of

  1678. sheep are

  1679. not the same

  1680. thing.

  1681. And it

  1682. requires

  1683. humility and

  1684. discernment to

  1685. tell them

  1686. apart.

  1687. So the

  1688. pastors are

  1689. to guide and

  1690. guard and

  1691. thirdly,

  1692. they are to

  1693. graze the

  1694. flock in the

  1695. green pastures

  1696. of God's

  1697. word.

  1698. It says in

  1699. verse 32,

  1700. and now I

  1701. commend you to

  1702. God and to

  1703. the word of

  1704. his grace,

  1705. which is able

  1706. to build you

  1707. up and to

  1708. give you the

  1709. inheritance among

  1710. all those who

  1711. are sanctified.

  1712. The word of

  1713. his grace is

  1714. the same thing

  1715. as the gospel

  1716. of the grace

  1717. of God that

  1718. Paul mentioned

  1719. earlier in

  1720. verse 24.

  1721. So yes,

  1722. pastors are

  1723. supposed to

  1724. preach the

  1725. whole counsel

  1726. of God,

  1727. but because

  1728. all of

  1729. scripture points

  1730. to Jesus and

  1731. is fulfilled by

  1732. Jesus, the

  1733. work of

  1734. preaching always

  1735. involves commending

  1736. people to God

  1737. and to the

  1738. word of his

  1739. grace.

  1740. That sinners

  1741. deserving of the

  1742. just wrath and

  1743. punishment of

  1744. God may be

  1745. forgiven and

  1746. reconciled to

  1747. God through

  1748. the death and

  1749. resurrection of

  1750. Jesus.

  1751. That salvation

  1752. is not something

  1753. that we earn

  1754. through our

  1755. hard work or

  1756. good work,

  1757. but that it

  1758. is a gift from

  1759. God to be

  1760. received through

  1761. faith.

  1762. That is the

  1763. gospel, the

  1764. good news of

  1765. the grace of

  1766. God.

  1767. And that's the

  1768. news that builds

  1769. up the saints and

  1770. it is by

  1771. persevering in our

  1772. faith in that

  1773. gospel that we

  1774. receive our

  1775. heavenly inheritance.

  1776. And then Paul

  1777. returns again to

  1778. his personal

  1779. example in

  1780. verses 33 to

  1781. 35.

  1782. He says,

  1783. I coveted no

  1784. one's silver or

  1785. gold or apparel.

  1786. You yourselves

  1787. know that these

  1788. hands ministered to

  1789. my necessities and

  1790. to those who were

  1791. with me.

  1792. In all things I

  1793. have shown you that

  1794. by working hard in

  1795. this way we must

  1796. help the weak and

  1797. remember the words

  1798. of the Lord Jesus.

  1799. How he himself

  1800. said, it is more

  1801. blessed to give

  1802. than to receive.

  1803. In the Roman

  1804. Empire there were

  1805. various kinds of

  1806. philosophers,

  1807. itinerant philosophers

  1808. that traveled and

  1809. spoke in various

  1810. places and they

  1811. gained fans and

  1812. followers.

  1813. And these itinerant

  1814. teachers had four

  1815. different means by

  1816. which they supported

  1817. themselves.

  1818. The first was to

  1819. rely on a wealthy

  1820. patron or patroness

  1821. who would host these

  1822. luxurious dinners

  1823. where they would be

  1824. the honored guests

  1825. giving lectures.

  1826. The second was to

  1827. charge fees for

  1828. their speaking and

  1829. their teaching

  1830. services.

  1831. And third was to

  1832. rely on public

  1833. charity by begging,

  1834. by asking for

  1835. donations.

  1836. And the fourth,

  1837. and by far the

  1838. most despised way

  1839. among the Greeks,

  1840. was to work as

  1841. manual laborers.

  1842. Because these itinerant

  1843. philosophers viewed

  1844. that as beneath their

  1845. social standing.

  1846. And the great

  1847. apostle Paul refused

  1848. compensation for his

  1849. ministry, worked with

1850. his own hands as a

1851. tent maker so that he

  1852. might provide for

  1853. those who have need.

  1854. He says, with these

  1855. hands, it seems like

  1856. as Paul speaking, he's

  1857. lifting up his hands,

  1858. showing his hands to

  1859. people saying, with

  1860. these hands I provided

  1861. for myself.

  1862. Probably callous from

  1863. all that tent making.

  1864. This is not because

  1865. Paul doesn't think that

  1866. elders should be

  1867. provided for by their

  1868. churches.

1869. He does say in 1

  1870. Timothy 5, 17 and 18,

  1871. that elders who rule

  1872. well and labor in

  1873. preaching and teaching

  1874. deserve their wages.

  1875. However, Paul himself

  1876. decided to forego this

  1877. right, and he did

1878. manual labor in order to

  1879. provide for himself as

1880. well as for his fellow

  1881. missionary companions.

1882. And Paul did this, he

1883. says, in order to help

  1884. the weak and remember

1885. the words of the Lord

  1886. Jesus, how he himself

1887. said it is more blessed

1888. to give than to receive.

1889. The weak is likely a

  1890. reference to people who

1891. were in one way or

  1892. another incapacitated or

  1893. limited, therefore unable

  1894. to provide for

  1895. themselves.

  1896. As Christians, we don't

1897. hold a job and work

  1898. merely to provide for

  1899. ourselves and for our

  1900. families.

1901. We also work to give

  1902. generously to those in

  1903. need.

  1904. Ephesians 4, 28 says,

1905. let the thief no longer

1906. steal, but rather let him

  1907. labor, doing honest work

1908. with his own hands, so that

1909. he may have something to

1910. share with anyone in need.

1911. This is the example that

1912. Paul set for the Ephesian

1913. elders, and he confirms it

1914. with Jesus' teaching, it is

1915. more blessed to give than to

  1916. receive.

  1917. I was just talking to, I

1918. think it was Jen mentioned,

1919. Gary told her about this

  1920. Instagram handle called

  1921. pastors and sneakers.

1922. You guys know about that?

  1923. Preachers, sorry.

  1924. Pastors and preachers.

  1925. Or, no, preachers and

  1926. sneakers.

1927. Sorry, I guess that rhymes

  1928. better.

  1929. Apparently, the guy who

1930. has the handle just came

  1931. out with the book.

  1932. He's kind of, he's

  1933. criticizing the way

  1934. consumerism has taken over

1935. some parts of church and

1936. clergy and how the church

  1937. culture is following the

  1938. world's celebrity culture.

  1939. $5,000 sneakers.

  1940. I didn't even know such

  1941. things existed.

  1942. I didn't know such things.

1943. The pastoral ministry is not

  1944. a platform for self-promotion.

1945. How many poor widows gave for

  1946. that?

1947. The church offerings are not a

  1948. means for personal enrichment.

1949. Church members are not a

  1950. platform for pastoral

  1951. celebrity and self-promotion.

  1952. Pastors must remember that

1953. they are called to feed the

1954. sheep, not feed on the sheep.

1955. And that it is more blessed to

  1956. give than to receive.

1957. This is really the attitude that

  1958. befits every Christian.

1959. Think more of what you can

1960. give to the church than get from

  1961. the church.

1962. Think more of how you can serve

1963. others than to be served.

1964. It is human to give in return for

  1965. something else.

1966. It is Christian to give without

  1967. expecting anything in return.

1968. Because we know that God will

  1969. ultimately repay us.

  1970. That's the appropriate Christian

1971. attitude because Jesus came to be,

1972. not to be served, but to serve and

1973. to give his life as a ransom for

  1974. many.

  1975. Pastoral ministry is ultimately

1976. patterned after the ministry of the

1977. good shepherd, our Lord Jesus.

  1978. Jesus said in John 10, 11 to 15, I am

  1979. the good shepherd.

1980. The good shepherd lays down his life

  1981. for the sheep.

1982. He who is a hired hand and not a

1983. shepherd, who does not own the

1984. sheep, sees the wolf coming and

1985. leaves the sheep and flees.

1986. And the wolf snatches them and

  1987. scatters them.

1988. He flees because he is a hired hand

1989. and cares nothing for the sheep.

1990. I am the good shepherd.

1991. I know my own and my own know me.

1992. Just as the Father knows me and I

1993. know the Father and I lay down my

  1994. life for the sheep.

1995. The people of God throughout history

1996. have been shepherded by many hired

  1997. hands.

1998. Rulers and leaders who clothed

1999. themselves with the wool and

2000. slaughtered the fat ones who didn't

2001. strengthen the weak or heal the sick

2002. or bind up the injured and bring back

2003. the strayed or seek the lost sheep.

2004. None of your pastors that you ever

2005. have, including myself, are not going

2006. to be the perfect shepherd.

2007. None of the things that you turn to

2008. for your comfort, for your

2009. provision can be that perfect

  2010. shepherd.

2011. But our Jesus is the good and

  2012. perfect shepherd.

2013. If you are hungry, he is the

2014. shepherd that can feed you with

2015. manna from heaven, bread from

  2016. heaven.

2017. If you are walking through the valley

2018. of the shadow of death, Jesus is the

2019. shepherd who has his trusty and

2020. comforting rod and staff to assure you

2021. so that you may not fear.

2022. When you feel weary and heavy laden, when

2023. you feel weighed down by your own guilt

2024. and your own failures and your own
