  1. for many years, and you would reach the point in the book where there would be weeping and

  2. gnashing of teeth as you dealt with election doctrines of grace. And so I would just kind

  3. of stop the class. Let's breathe, do some calisthenics, just get some exercise, let

  4. your mind open a little bit, settle down so we can do something like that if you start nodding

  5. off. A month ago, a young man, he's still a kid. He's just a huge, tall, big kid. And for the first

  6. time ever, he didn't sit down with his mom. He sat down. He's probably junior high at most. He came

  7. all the way, sat right at the end of the front row. And then as soon as the sermon started,

  8. he just gone and snored, snored the entire sermon. It was kind of the self-discipline of

  9. keep focused, keep focused. So there's grace even if you're snoring. Through our sessions,

  10. we began with joy in uncertainty. Because of what is certain, how much is certain, greatly

  11. certain, we can still have joy. Because of the glories we have in the gospel, we dug into

  12. that a little bit to specify and emphasize what those glories are. Because that is the

  13. foundation for all that we're looking at. In the last session, we turned and looked at that

  14. we can have joy when life is hard. Because God himself is worthy of joy. And that we can

  15. take joy in the God of our salvation. There's a responsibility to pursue joy. In this session,

  16. we continue with the theme of joy when life is hard. But we're going to add another layer

  17. to that. And that is that in hardship, we can have joy for what God is doing through what

  18. is hard. We're going to turn to James chapter 1.

    James 1 chapter mention

  19. James chapter 1. We'll read the first four verses.

    James 1 chapter mention

  20. James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the 12 tribes in the dispersion,

  21. greetings. Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds. For you know

  22. that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect.

  23. That you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

  24. Now, I don't think there's any New Testament letter that begins as abruptly as this one.

  25. Greetings. Count it all joy when you encounter suffering. He doesn't even really stop to say

  26. hello much. He doesn't get into reasons why he's thankful or how he thinks of them and how he's

  27. praying for them. It's just, hello, things are hard and you should have joy. It's very abrupt.

  28. And I'm sure he recognized this. He wrote it down. He had the time to think through it.

  29. You wonder if he started over and scribbled it out. He's trying to find a way to get to it and then just

  30. forget. Let's just be direct. Let's go right to it.

  31. The Jewish believers whom he's writing to, he speaks of the 12 tribes in dispersion. He's writing to

  32. Jewish believers who, like their forefathers, had a very strong sense that those who are in covenant

  33. relationship with the Lord also will have the blessings of the Lord. That is steeped in their

  34. heritage in the culture and thinking of the Old Testament going back to the time of the Exodus,

  35. which is so prominent in their thinking. There is hardship that comes, but God brings blessing to

  36. his people. But like believers ever since then, we all discover that the difficulties we also have

  37. that don't really fade. I mean, some may pass by, but then there's others in queue waiting to jump right in.

  38. Along with just the regular trials of life that everyone has, for these believers, they're rejected by their own

  39. culture, their own families, rejecting them because you're Jewish, you're the children of Abraham.

  40. Why are you aligning with these followers of Jesus? And we're coming into when the persecution by the Romans

  41. would begin, which was horrible for God's people. James assumes faithful Christians,

  42. godly Christians, the ones whom the Lord loves and sings over, those Christians will meet trials

  43. and a variety of them. He says, when you will meet them. Count it all joy, when? Not perhaps. And Jesus

  44. similarly even said it stronger in John 16, 33. In the world, you will have tribulation.

  45. We couldn't be more direct than that. And yet, within the church, there are too many that teach that if

  46. your faith is strong enough and you love God enough and your life is right enough and some are as crass to

  47. say and you give enough, then hardships can be quickly overcome and be put behind you.

  48. That we can live without hardships, which is a very unbiblical orientation. And even if we're not under

  49. that kind of poor teaching, and even as direct as scripture is about suffering, we can just fall into the

  50. thinking of believers that if I have hardship, somehow that must mean that God's not happy with me.

  51. And we make the wrong associations and wrong conclusions. So, to our encouragement, and you,

  52. well, it's not very encouraging to say I will have trials. Well, you're gonna have them whether he says

  53. them or not. So, to our encouragement to recognize struggles and trials are not an evidence God is

  54. against you. When believers ask me at times, the things that I'm going through, these hardships,

  55. do you think God's correcting me? I just ask the question, well, should he be?

  56. I mean, if you have sin in your life that you've been ignoring, that you're not repenting of, well,

  57. then the answer I'm gonna say is in some way yes. Because God's not gonna just let you go on and on

  58. ignoring him in your sin. So, it's not that God is out to get us, but God will discipline. God wants to

  59. pull us away. So, there is some work of God getting attention if we have just turned our back and we are

  60. secretly staying in an unrepentant state. But we should never think that the existence of struggles and

  61. trials mean God is against us.

  62. Godliness will remove some types of hardships and trials. The stability of life, not living,

  63. addictive behaviors. There are certain troubles and burdens that living for God will remove from us,

  64. will protect us from. But then there are other kinds of struggles and trials that it will add to us.

  65. I think of some of the businessmen in our church who, their competitors are free to break laws and cut

  66. corners and do whatever they can to maximize their business. And here's the believer saying,

  67. I can't do any of those things. And they feel vulnerable because they simply can't do that.

  68. There are burdens that we receive by not fitting in, by swimming against the stream of culture.

  69. Sometimes there can be family members just who are angry at someone becoming a believer.

  70. My brother dated a woman once who was, she was a relatively new Christian and her mom actually told her,

  71. I wish you were a prostitute rather than go to church.

  72. And I met a man in Belarus a couple of years ago who said that when his wife became a Christian,

  73. she became a Christian a year or two before him.

  74. The mother-in-law, the mother of this woman was, had a physical disability, so she couldn't get out of the house.

  75. She offered to pay him to kill her daughter.

  76. And you're sitting here, someone really tried to do that?

  77. There are, those could be extremes.

  78. And yet, we all recognize that to be serious about God can make people feel uncomfortable.

  79. And in that uncomfortableness, how they treat us, is uncomfortable for us.

  80. Hardship is unavoidable in a world that rejects God.

  81. And, more to the point of this passage, hardship is necessary for God to grow us.

  82. We need a wise, meaning biblical, perspective for our trials.

  83. How do we think about them in a way that represents what the Bible actually says,

  84. what is actually in God's heart, what is his intention, what's God's agenda in this?

  85. We need to see those things so that we are understanding our burdens properly.

  86. And James is saying part of that correct understanding, a biblical understanding of hardships,

  87. should bring joy to us.

  88. Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet trials of various kinds.

  89. Now, this doesn't mean difficulties only bring joy.

  90. That, count it all joy, has often been misunderstood.

  91. It means pure joy or our highest joy.

  92. Count it your highest joy, meaning there are different types of joy.

  93. And the most pure and the most wondrous and highest of joys is that which we can take when we have difficulties.

  94. We see from Jesus' own example that trials don't bring only joy.

  95. In Matthew 26, that passage of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, which is a great gift to the church.

  96. Where Jesus says, first as disciples, my soul is sorrowful even to death.

  97. And then what serves us so well is when it speaks of Jesus going and praying,

  98. Lord, if this cup can pass, but not my will, your will be done.

  99. And then it says, and then he went and prayed the same thing over again.

  100. And it says, and then he prayed the same thing a third time again.

  101. So we're seeing Jesus, who without sin and without any lack of faith,

  102. Jesus is faced with this overwhelming burden and trial,

  103. and it is weighing heavily upon him.

  104. We've never seen Jesus that way.

  105. So heavily that he keeps going back to pray, not because his faith is weak.

  106. That's the evidence his faith was strong.

  107. He persisted in pursuing the Father until his heart was settled.

  108. And so even though he's saying,

  109. my soul is sorrowful even to the point of death,

  110. we know what's also in his heart and mind.

  111. And for in Hebrews 12, it says this of Jesus,

  112. who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross.

  113. So even as his heart is overwhelmed,

  114. there is this like subterranean river flowing through his soul

  115. that the reason I am doing this is because it's the only way to bring them to me.

  116. It's the only way to set free for the joy that he would gather

  117. a people for himself and his Father.

  118. God is our highest joy.

  119. And part of maturity is cultivating that that is real for us.

  120. Very piperish thinking.

  121. He is our highest joy.

  122. And he is in our trials.

  123. And he is using them.

  124. The one of splendor and joy is always embedded in the trials.

  125. And he is always using them.

  126. And so whatever hurt we have,

  127. whatever brokenness it seems to bring,

  128. that is never the only thing going on in our trials.

  129. It doesn't matter if you can see it or not.

  130. The pain, the uncertainty, the fear,

  131. that's not all that's going on.

  132. There are things much deeper, much more wonderful going on.

  133. For the believer,

  134. everything that takes place in your life,

  135. there are no exceptions, there are no caveats.

  136. Everything that takes place in our lives is gloved with grace.

  137. Grace is in everything.

  138. Literally, nothing touches our life without grace being a part of it.

  139. Which is the only way Paul can say what he does.

  140. Everyone's favor promise that all things work together for good.

  141. How could that be possible if there's not grace in all things?

  142. Verse 2,

  143. Count it all joy, my brothers,

  144. when you meet various trials.

  145. It's not a grin and bear it.

  146. Just believe better things are out there somewhere.

  147. And just endure it.

  148. It's not that kind of attitude.

  149. Though there may be moments when we kind of feel it that way.

  150. It's not grin and bear it.

  151. It's joy.

  152. There's more going on.

  153. I trust God enough for that.

  154. I believe in the sheer wonder, beauty, and glory of his heart and character and faithfulness.

  155. That I know there has to be more in this.

  156. And if God really is perfect,

  157. if he is as wonderful as we say,

  158. that whatever it is that he is doing

  159. has to be wonderful.

  160. What I often remind myself is that,

  161. and I have enough faith for this,

  162. to believe that there will be a time in eternity

  163. when I will be able to look

  164. and with full honesty be able to say,

  165. Lord, you were faithful and good there.

  166. I believe I will be at that place.

  167. If I believe I will be at that place,

  168. then why not just jump to it now?

  169. If I'm convinced.

  170. There's no way I'm going to be in heaven.

  171. You know, Lord, most of the time.

  172. I mean, what about then?

  173. We will be filled with the sense of his praiseworthiness in all things.

  174. So let's live with that eternal mindset.

  175. It's part of thy kingdom come.

  176. It's not only his rule over us,

  177. it's our thinking in terms of what is it to be in his kingdom.

  178. Trials are not an evidence God is angry.

  179. And it's not God being distant.

  180. It's God being active.

  181. God who is perfect,

  182. being perfect toward us.

  183. Verse 3,

  184. you know the testing of your faith.

  185. It produces something.

  186. Verse 4,

  187. and what it's producing,

  188. let it have its full effect

  189. that you may become perfect, complete.

  190. Now, our natural perspectives and difficulties

  191. is something like this.

  192. The best thing is that this would go away.

  193. What do we pray?

  194. I had a friend bring this up to me

  195. who's been on many mission trips

  196. and he would take teens.

  197. He says,

  198. what is it that we all pray for every mission trip for everyone?

  199. The first thing is,

  200. Lord, keep them safe.

  201. And as one who's been on dozens of them,

  202. I'm all for that.

  203. we are quickly thinking of those types of things.

  204. If something difficult happens,

  205. we want it quickly to pass.

  206. And that would be the best thing God could do

  207. would be remove it as soon as possible.

  208. That is our natural instinct of

  209. what would be good right now.

  210. Well, God's understanding

  211. what would be good right now

  212. is a little bit different.

  213. It is that the full measure

  214. of the good I want to do

  215. be perfected.

  216. And we are,

  217. oh, Lord, I got the lesson.

  218. No, we can go on now.

  219. We can kind of move on to something.

  220. I've got it.

  221. I've learned.

  222. In Romans chapter eight,

  223. it compares our groaning

  224. to the pains of childbirth.

  225. Now, I've been there for childbirth a few times.

  226. I don't know what it feels like,

  227. but I've heard something of what it feels like.

  228. I've heard the groans.

  229. I've heard the cries.

  230. I've heard enough to know

  231. I never want to experience what it is.

  232. However,

  233. no one in childbirth

  234. wants the pain to end

  235. at the expense of that child coming.

  236. You don't want to cut it short

  237. to stop the birth of what is coming.

  238. I remember when our son,

  239. our firstborn,

  240. and my wife going through long labor

  241. and all the pain in that,

  242. and she went from the moment

  243. they put our son on her chest

  244. and she held him.

  245. I can still hear how her voice changed.

  246. It went from all the screams of labor and pain

  247. to this soft, maternal, loving, cooing voice.

  248. Trials are hard,

  249. but every single one is temporary,

  250. and every single one is purposeful.

  251. purposeful.

  252. We have no promise

  253. that the trials of life

  254. will be removed

  255. or even reduced.

  256. Yet,

  257. James is still telling us

  258. that life

  259. will be fruitful

  260. and it can be joyful.

  261. this joy

  262. that we have

  263. is founded on the realities

  264. that we love God

  265. and above all things,

  266. we want to be closer to Him.

  267. And that's what He wants.

  268. And

  269. what we go through in trials

  270. is part of God

  271. bringing us near

  272. because,

  273. as we've already sung,

  274. we are so prone to

  275. wander.

  276. And we're prone

  277. to be busy.

  278. And we're prone

  279. to be preoccupied.

  280. And we're prone

  281. even in the midst

  282. of doing the most

  283. noble things

  284. of ministry,

  285. of doing them

  286. with God following

  287. rather than leading.

  288. trials and suffering

  289. is needed

  290. to bring us back

  291. to make us desperate

  292. for the presence of God,

  293. the nearness of God.

  294. God.

  295. And that presence

  296. really is wonderful

  297. enough

  298. to go through

  299. suffering

  300. to get there.

  301. joy is founded

  302. not only our love

  303. for God,

  304. that we trust

  305. Him.

  306. What He is doing

  307. is praiseworthy.

  308. just a few years ago

  309. I was

  310. in Belarus

  311. and I'd received

  312. some

  313. difficult news

  314. from home.

  315. Bob,

  316. one of my children

  317. and

  318. a panic attack

  319. started

  320. and I could feel

  321. coming in.

  322. They can take

  323. different ways

  324. and for me

  325. a few times

  326. I've had them

  327. it

  328. not

  329. always bringing

  330. dread

  331. about my condition.

  332. I'm gonna die,

  333. I'm gonna die.

  334. That

  335. turning toward

  336. my kids

  337. that

  338. the most horrible

  339. thing will happen.

  340. And I can remember

  341. I was

  342. alone in the room

  343. late at night

  344. and I was convinced

  345. my son

  346. would commit suicide.

  347. the panic attack

  348. just took her

  349. I

  350. he will be

  351. I will find out

  352. he's dead

  353. tomorrow.

  354. That was

  355. the reality

  356. being pressed

  357. into my mind

  358. and I can remember

  359. just

  360. laying there

  361. just saying

  362. over and over

  363. Lord

  364. Lord

  365. I trust you

  366. Lord

  367. I trust you

  368. I just

  369. kept

  370. saying it

  371. no matter

  372. what happens

  373. I

  374. will

  375. trust

  376. you

  377. till I

  378. finally

  379. fell asleep.

  380. Now I

  381. woke

  382. to

  383. a wonderful

  384. text of

  385. grace

  386. that my

  387. fears were

  388. not true

  389. but we

  390. can trust

  391. him

  392. even in

  393. what

  394. we never

  395. want to

  396. see happen

  397. because

  398. if it

  399. does

  400. he is

  401. being good

  402. in it.

  403. It's all

  404. he can be

  405. God

  406. can only

  407. be wonderful

  408. he can only

  409. be faithful

  410. he can only

  411. be good

  412. he can only

  413. be what

  414. his character

  415. is.

  416. James is

  417. leading us

  418. to take

  419. on God's

  420. perspective

  421. for our

  422. difficulties

  423. God's

  424. perspective

  425. is

  426. I know

  427. this

  428. hurts

  429. but

  430. this good

  431. I'm doing

  432. my

  433. grandson

  434. who's

  435. six

  436. he

  437. had to

  438. be tested

  439. for

  440. COVID

  441. have

  442. any

  443. of you

  444. been

  445. tested?

  446. Yeah

  447. that

  448. it's

  449. really

  450. test

  451. how far

  452. can we

  453. shove

  454. this up

  455. your nose

  456. I think

  457. that's

  458. that's

  459. what

  460. they're

  461. trying

  462. to

  463. see

  464. so

  465. you

  466. know

  467. his

  468. parents

  469. are

  470. dreading

  471. you

  472. know

  473. how

  474. he's

  475. going

  476. to

  477. handle

  478. this

  479. they

  480. know

  481. what's

  482. happening

  483. friendly

  484. nurse

  485. comes

  486. in

  487. talking

  488. with

  489. Wyatt

  490. and

  491. they

  492. know

  493. what's

  494. about

  495. to

  496. happen

  497. how

  498. unhappy

  499. he's

  500. about

  501. to

  502. be

  503. they

  504. did

  505. it

  506. not

  507. for

  508. the

  509. joy

  510. of

  511. watching

  512. him

  513. squirm

  514. and

  515. pull

  516. his

  517. head

  518. back

  519. and

  520. yell

  521. it

  522. was

  523. out

  524. of

  525. care

  526. and

  527. then

  528. when

  529. the

  530. doctor

  531. came

  532. in

  533. a

  534. couple

  535. minutes

  536. later

  537. and

  538. asked

  539. how

  540. are

  541. you

  542. feeling

  543. does

  544. anything

  545. hurt

  546. he

  547. said

  548. yeah

  549. something

  550. hurts

  551. that

  552. lady

  553. just

  554. stuck

  555. something

  556. way up

  557. my

  558. nose

  559. it

  560. hurts

  561. we

  562. believe

  563. that

  564. God

  565. is

  566. good

  567. God

  568. is

  569. true

  570. God

  571. is

  572. wise

  573. we

  574. lose

  575. sight

  576. of

  577. it

  578. it's

  579. not

  580. that

  581. we're

  582. not

  583. believing

  584. these

  585. things

  586. about

  587. God

  588. but

  589. they're

  590. not

  591. capturing

  592. our

  593. heart

  594. as

  595. often

  596. as

  597. it

  598. should

  599. part

  600. of

  601. what

  602. helps

  603. us

  604. is

  605. having

  606. this

  607. community

  608. of

  609. people

  610. who

  611. love

  612. us

  613. and

  614. can

  615. speak

  616. grace

  617. to

  618. us

  619. I

  620. spoke

  621. in

  622. the

  623. last

  624. session

  625. of

  626. preaching

  627. the

  628. gospel

  629. to

  630. ourselves

  631. and

  632. also

  633. then

  634. the

  635. community

  636. that

  637. we

  638. are

  639. speaking

  640. of

  641. gospel

  642. we're

  643. speaking

  644. of

  645. our

  646. own

  647. struggles

  648. our

  649. own

  650. hearts

  651. we

  652. are

  653. reminding

  654. each

  655. other

  656. we're

  657. sharing

  658. with

  659. each

  660. other

  661. we're

  662. listening

  663. we're

  664. praying

  665. for

  666. each

  667. other

  668. we need

  669. the

  670. rootedness

  671. and

  672. the

  673. grace

  674. reality

  675. that

  676. brothers

  677. and

  678. sisters

  679. who

  680. love

  681. the

  682. Lord

  683. bring

  684. to

  685. us

  686. there's

  687. a

  688. book

  689. it's

  690. a newer

  691. book

  692. out

  693. by

  694. Michael

  695. Emlett

  696. who

  697. works

  698. with

  699. CCEF

  700. saints

  701. sufferers

  702. and

  703. sinners

  704. he's

  705. a

  706. counselor

  707. the

  708. book

  709. is

  710. written

  711. just

  712. for

  713. believers

  714. as

  715. you're

  716. interacting

  717. with

  718. each

  719. other

  720. you

  721. may

  722. not

  723. be

  724. a

  725. counselor

  726. but

  727. we

  728. we

  729. speak

  730. to

  731. each

  732. other

  733. in

  734. effect

  735. we

  736. bring

  737. counsel

  738. we

  739. interact

  740. and

  741. so

  742. he

  743. helps

  744. believers

  745. with

  746. other

  747. believers

  748. that

  749. every

  750. believer

  751. is

  752. a

  753. saint

  754. they're

  755. in

  756. Christ

  757. every

  758. believer

  759. has

  760. suffering

  761. and

  762. every

  763. believer

  764. has

  765. sin

  766. and

  767. he

  768. kind

  769. of

  770. helps

  771. us

  772. how

  773. do

  774. we

  775. navigate

  776. those

  777. things

  778. it's

  779. very

  780. helpful

  781. can

  782. serve

  783. you

  784. in

  785. how

  786. you

  787. engage

  788. with

  789. one

  790. another

  791. because

  792. we

  793. need

  794. to

  795. do

  796. that

  797. we

  798. need

  799. each

  800. other

  801. in

  802. these

  803. things

  804. we

  805. know

  806. and

  807. understand

  808. and

  809. how

  810. we

  811. are

  812. living

  813. for

  814. God

  815. becomes

  816. more

  817. and

  818. more

  819. rooted

  820. it

  821. it's

  822. less

  823. passing

  824. it's

  825. less

  826. ebb

  827. and

  828. flow

  829. it

  830. becomes

  831. stronger

  832. more

  833. consistent

  834. and

  835. fills

  836. our

  837. life

  838. more

  839. and

  840. more

  841. so

  842. it

  843. becomes

  844. the

  845. norm

  846. of

  847. our

  848. life

  849. difficulties

  850. test

  851. or they

  852. prove

  853. it

  854. it

  855. reveals

  856. and

  857. purifies

  858. so

  859. we

  860. can

  861. see

  862. that

  863. we're

  864. more

  865. distracted

  866. than

  867. we

  868. might

  869. think

  870. or

  871. we're

  872. awakened

  873. to

  874. the

  875. fact

  876. that

  877. we're

  878. struggling

  879. to

  880. trust

  881. him

  882. more

  883. than

  884. we

  885. realize

  886. it's

  887. awakening

  888. us

  889. to

  890. weakness

  891. that we

  892. have

  893. and the

  894. need

  895. to be

  896. earnest

  897. and

  898. draw

  899. near

  900. trials

  901. teach us

  902. we cannot

  903. depend

  904. on

  905. ourselves

  906. and

  907. they

  908. help

  909. us

  910. seeing

  911. that

  912. walking

  913. with

  914. God

  915. is

  916. something

  917. we

  918. cannot

  919. neglect

  920. we

  921. just

  922. can't

  923. afford

  924. to

  925. enter

  926. our

  927. day

  928. without

  929. him

  930. trials

  931. are

  932. needed

  933. to

  934. become

  935. more

  936. consistent

  937. and

  938. rooted

  939. in

  940. our

  941. faith

  942. so

  943. we

  944. grow

  945. from

  946. people

  947. who

  948. are

  949. doubting

  950. God

  951. at

  952. times

  953. to

  954. those

  955. who

  956. are

  957. worshiping

  958. him

  959. in

  960. all

  961. things

  962. we

  963. grow

  964. from

  965. people

  966. who

  967. neglect

  968. obedience

  969. to

  970. those

  971. who

  972. know

  973. submission

  974. is

  975. always

  976. the

  977. best

  978. starting

  979. place

  980. in

  981. whatever

  982. is

  983. happening

  984. we

  985. grow

  986. from

  987. those

  988. who

  989. want

  990. to

  991. get

  992. back

  993. at

  994. those

  995. who

  996. bring

  997. pain

  998. to

  999. those

  1000. who

  1001. want

  1002. to

  1003. fulfill

  1004. God's

  1005. agenda

  1006. for

  1007. people

  1008. to

  1009. we

  1010. grow

  1011. from

  1012. those

  1013. who

  1014. may

  1015. compromise

  1016. to

  1017. stop

  1018. pain

  1019. to

  1020. those

  1021. who

  1022. focus

  1023. on

  1024. what

  1025. would

  1026. honor

  1027. God

  1028. in

  1029. this

  1030. moment

  1031. we

  1032. grow

  1033. from

  1034. wallowing

  1035. in

  1036. self

  1037. pity

  1038. to

  1039. those

  1040. who

  1041. rejoice

  1042. that

  1043. God

  1044. is

  1045. transforming

  1046. us

  1047. we

  1048. grow

  1049. from

  1050. inconsistency

  1051. to

  1052. someone

  1053. whose

  1054. life

  1055. points

  1056. others

  1057. to

  1058. Christ

  1059. that's

  1060. what

  1061. God

  1062. wants

  1063. he's

  1064. using

  1065. trials

  1066. to

  1067. work

  1068. toward

  1069. our

  1070. completion

  1071. it

  1072. says

  1073. perfect

  1074. and

  1075. complete

  1076. all

  1077. that

  1078. God

  1079. intends

  1080. which

  1081. Paul

  1082. in

  1083. making

  1084. the same

  1085. point

  1086. in

  1087. Ephesians

  1088. 4

  1089. 13

  1090. speaks

  1091. of

  1092. full

  1093. maturity

  1094. as

  1095. the

  1096. measure

  1097. of

  1098. the

  1099. stature

  1100. of

  1101. the

  1102. fullness

  1103. of

  1104. Christ

  1105. being

  1106. complete

  1107. being

  1108. made

  1109. perfect

  1110. is

  1111. to

  1112. be

  1113. like

  1114. Christ

  1115. in

  1116. our

  1117. character

  1118. one

  1119. who

  1120. loves

  1121. the

  1122. Lord

  1123. with

  1124. all

  1125. of

  1126. our

  1127. heart

  1128. mind

  1129. soul

  1130. and

  1131. strength

  1132. so

  1133. we

  1134. we

  1135. could

  1136. speak

  1137. of it

  1138. in

  1139. different

  1140. ways

  1141. it

  1142. to

  1143. to

  1144. be

  1145. complete

  1146. and

  1147. perfect

  1148. is

  1149. to

  1150. be

  1151. like

  1152. Christ

  1153. or

  1154. another

  1155. way

  1156. is

  1157. to

  1158. be

  1159. a

  1160. great

  1161. commandment

  1162. Christian

  1163. to

  1164. love

  1165. the

  1166. Lord

  1167. with

  1168. all of

  1169. our

  1170. heart

  1171. mind

  1172. soul

  1173. and

  1174. strength

  1175. to

  1176. love

  1177. our

  1178. neighbor

  1179. as

  1180. herself

  1181. it

  1182. is

  1183. to

  1184. be

  1185. a

  1186. mature

  1187. disciple

  1188. maker

  1189. all of

  1190. those

  1191. things

  1192. are

  1193. part

  1194. of

  1195. what

  1196. it

  1197. means

  1198. to

  1199. be

  1200. made

  1201. complete

  1202. meaning

  1203. that

  1204. what

  1205. God

  1206. declares

  1207. is

  1208. the

  1209. wholeness

  1210. of

  1211. life

  1212. is

  1213. what

  1214. is

  1215. increasingly

  1216. taking

  1217. shape

  1218. like

  1219. an

  1220. artist

  1221. who

  1222. begins

  1223. sketching

  1224. and we

  1225. begin

  1226. seeing

  1227. parts

  1228. of it

  1229. and

  1230. eventually

  1231. you

  1232. start

  1233. seeing

  1234. more

  1235. and more

  1236. until

  1237. okay

  1238. I see

  1239. now

  1240. what

  1241. they're

  1242. making

  1243. and

  1244. eventually

  1245. the full

  1246. beauty

  1247. of it

  1248. God

  1249. wants

  1250. us

  1251. visibly

  1252. to be

  1253. that

  1254. measure

  1255. of what

  1256. he's

  1257. making

  1258. us

  1259. so the

  1260. world

  1261. sees

  1262. what

  1263. Christ

  1264. is

  1265. like

  1266. what

  1267. God

  1268. would

  1269. have

  1270. them

  1271. to be

  1272. like

  1273. the

  1274. question

  1275. is

  1276. do we

  1277. view

  1278. those

  1279. things

  1280. as

  1281. being

  1282. joyous

  1283. is

  1284. to be

  1285. like

  1286. Christ

  1287. joyous

  1288. is

  1289. to be

  1290. a great

  1291. commandment

  1292. person

  1293. joyous

  1294. is

  1295. to be

  1296. a

  1297. disciple

  1298. maker

  1299. is

  1300. that

  1301. joyous

  1302. to

  1303. us

  1304. if

  1305. it's

  1306. not

  1307. joyous

  1308. we have

  1309. to ask

  1310. what is

  1311. our

  1312. relationship

  1313. with the

  1314. Lord

  1315. do we

  1316. truly

  1317. love

  1318. him

  1319. do we

  1320. truly

  1321. know

  1322. him

  1323. it

  1324. doesn't

  1325. mean

  1326. we

  1327. don't

  1328. have

  1329. any

  1330. anxiety

  1331. or

  1332. any

  1333. struggle

  1334. with

  1335. it

  1336. but

  1337. just

  1338. as

  1339. birth

  1340. pains

  1341. have a

  1342. precious

  1343. result

  1344. so do

  1345. our

  1346. labor

  1347. pains

  1348. of

  1349. growing

  1350. in

  1351. Christ

  1352. we

  1353. we

  1354. just

  1355. don't

  1356. like

  1357. struggle

  1358. yet

  1359. because

  1360. we're

  1361. covenant

  1362. people

  1363. those

  1364. struggles

  1365. are

  1366. filled

  1367. with

  1368. grace

  1369. Peter

  1370. speaks

  1371. similar

  1372. to

  1373. James

  1374. in

  1375. chapter

  1376. one

  1377. of

  1378. his

  1379. epistle

  1380. God

  1381. caused

  1382. us

  1383. to be

  1384. born

  1385. again

  1386. to a

  1387. living

  1388. hope

  1389. to the

  1390. resurrection

  1391. of Jesus

  1392. Christ

  1393. from the

  1394. dead

  1395. to an

  1396. inheritance

  1397. that is

  1398. imperishable

  1399. undefiled

  1400. unfading

  1401. kept in

  1402. heaven

  1403. for you

  1404. in this

  1405. you rejoice

  1406. though now

  1407. for a little

  1408. while

  1409. necessary

  1410. you're

  1411. grieved

  1412. by various

  1413. trials

  1414. things

  1415. a

  1416. joyous

  1417. perspective

  1418. sees

  1419. God

  1420. is

  1421. glorious

  1422. in all

  1423. that he's

  1424. doing

  1425. and even

  1426. when we

  1427. don't

  1428. see

  1429. what

  1430. that

  1431. is

  1432. we

  1433. tell

  1434. ourselves

  1435. it's

  1436. true

  1437. a

  1438. joyful

  1439. perspective

  1440. it

  1441. sees

  1442. and

  1443. believes

  1444. God's

  1445. heart

  1446. for us

  1447. is

  1448. huge

  1449. and he

  1450. will never

  1451. betray

  1452. us

  1453. a

  1454. joyous

  1455. perspective

  1456. sees

  1457. we have

  1458. a wonderful

  1459. eternity

  1460. waiting

  1461. ahead

  1462. a

  1463. joyous

  1464. perspective

  1465. is seeing

  1466. as God

  1467. sees

  1468. what he's

  1469. doing

  1470. where we're

  1471. headed

  1472. what he's

  1473. like

  1474. our

  1475. world

  1476. is filled

  1477. with

  1478. immense

  1479. problems

  1480. with

  1481. pain

  1482. with

  1483. uncertainty

  1484. and we

  1485. have to

  1486. live in

  1487. these

  1488. things

  1489. it's

  1490. the

  1491. world

  1492. we're

  1493. in

  1494. we

  1495. have

  1496. to

  1497. live

  1498. amidst

  1499. these

  1500. but we

  1501. can

  1502. live

  1503. amidst

  1504. the

  1505. same

  1506. things

  1507. the

  1508. world

  1509. is

  1510. in

  1511. with

  1512. a

  1513. very

  1514. different

  1515. perspective

  1516. a

  1517. very

  1518. different

  1519. demeanor

  1520. and

  1521. that

  1522. means

  1523. every

  1524. one of

  1525. us

  1526. has

  1527. much

  1528. to

  1529. share

  1530. with

  1531. the

  1532. world

  1533. and

  1534. for

  1535. those

  1536. maybe

  1537. you're

  1538. tempted

  1539. to

  1540. think

  1541. well

  1542. my

  1543. gifting

  1544. isn't

  1545. very

  1546. high

  1547. and

  1548. my

  1549. gifting

  1550. isn't

  1551. a

  1552. public

  1553. gifting

  1554. and

  1555. my

  1556. influence

  1557. isn't

  1558. much

  1559. here's

  1560. what you

  1561. have

  1562. every

  1563. one

  1564. of

  1565. you

  1566. you

  1567. have

  1568. sufferings

  1569. and

  1570. struggles

  1571. and

  1572. you

  1573. can

  1574. live

  1575. in

  1576. them

  1577. in

  1578. a

  1579. way

  1580. that

  1581. people

  1582. see

  1583. there's

  1584. something

  1585. powerfully

  1586. different

  1587. in your

  1588. life

  1589. and

  1590. that's

  1591. what the

  1592. world

  1593. needs

  1594. they

  1595. need

  1596. to

  1597. see

  1598. there's

  1599. something

  1600. wonderful

  1601. out

  1602. there

  1603. there

  1604. is

  1605. someone

  1606. wonderful

  1607. out

  1608. there

  1609. and

  1610. the

  1611. power

  1612. that

  1613. your

  1614. life

  1615. can

  1616. have

  1617. through

  1618. how

  1619. you

  1620. walk

  1621. through

  1622. what

  1623. is

  1624. hard

  1625. can

  1626. enable

  1627. your

  1628. life

  1629. to

  1630. have

  1631. far

  1632. more

  1633. impact

  1634. than

  1635. people

  1636. talking

  1637. behind

  1638. podiums

  1639. there's

  1640. plenty

  1641. of us

  1642. out

  1643. there

  1644. when

  1645. they

  1646. see

  1647. those

  1648. they

  1649. know

  1650. who

  1651. are

  1652. who

  1653. are

  1654. enduring

  1655. differently

  1656. the

  1657. effect

  1658. of that

  1659. is

  1660. something

  1661. God

  1662. will

  1663. use

  1664. and

  1665. you

  1666. don't

  1667. have

  1668. to be

  1669. afraid

  1670. of

  1671. that

  1672. and

  1673. and

  1674. if

  1675. there

  1676. are

  1677. bits

  1678. of

  1679. fear

  1680. then

  1681. you

  1682. just

  1683. tell

  1684. God

  1685. Lord

  1686. it

  1687. just

  1688. feels

  1689. a little

  1690. scary

  1691. to me

  1692. and

  1693. I

  1694. want

  1695. to

  1696. be

  1697. used

  1698. and

  1699. I

  1700. don't

  1701. want

  1702. to

  1703. be

  1704. afraid

  1705. and

  1706. he

  1707. has

  1708. grace

  1709. not

  1710. only

  1711. to

  1712. use

  1713. you

  1714. he

  1715. has

  1716. grace

  1717. to

  1718. help

  1719. you

  1720. with

  1721. fears

  1722. he

  1723. has

  1724. grace

  1725. to

  1726. help

  1727. you

  1728. with

  1729. the

  1730. hesitations

  1731. and

  1732. he

  1733. has

  1734. the

  1735. wisdom

  1736. and

  1737. strength

  1738. to

  1739. go

  1740. ahead

  1741. and

  1742. use

  1743. you

  1744. anyway

  1745. even

  1746. if

  1747. it's

  1748. kicking

  1749. and

  1750. screaming

  1751. because

  1752. he

  1753. knows

  1754. we'll

  1755. be

  1756. thankful

  1757. afterward

  1758. God's

  1759. heart

  1760. is

  1761. so

  1762. big

  1763. for

  1764. you

  1765. he

  1766. does

  1767. not

  1768. want

  1769. you

  1770. to

  1771. enter

  1772. eternity

  1773. without

  1774. your

  1775. being

  1776. used

  1777. he

  1778. wants

  1779. you

  1780. to

  1781. have

  1782. that

  1783. for

  1784. all

  1785. eternity

  1786. the

  1787. evidences

  1788. that

  1789. you

  1790. would

  1791. be

  1792. used

  1793. he

  1794. wants

  1795. that

  1796. so

  1797. much

  1798. that

  1799. for

  1800. the

  1801. one

  1802. person

  1803. we

  1804. all

  1805. know

  1806. about

  1807. who

  1808. never

  1809. had

  1810. a

  1811. chance

  1812. to

  1813. do

  1814. a

  1815. single

  1816. work

  1817. for

  1818. God

  1819. he's

  1820. allowed

  1821. him

  1822. to

  1823. forever

  1824. see

  1825. the

  1826. impact

  1827. of

  1828. his

  1829. life

  1830. the

  1831. thief

  1832. on

  1833. the

  1834. cross

  1835. remember

  1836. me

  1837. never

  1838. had a

  1839. chance

  1840. to do

  1841. anything

  1842. for

  1843. God

  1844. and yet

  1845. because

  1846. his heart

  1847. was

  1848. for him

  1849. in that

  1850. suffering

  1851. God

  1852. gave him

  1853. this

  1854. wondrous

  1855. gift

  1856. that

  1857. testimony

  1858. is heard

  1859. and

  1860. known

  1861. by

  1862. generations

  1863. and

  1864. generations

  1865. of

  1866. God's

  1867. people

  1868. who

  1869. have

  1870. been

  1871. encouraged

  1872. and

  1873. helped

  1874. because

  1875. God

  1876. wants

  1877. you

  1878. to be

  1879. with

  1880. him

  1881. knowing

  1882. he

  1883. used

  1884. you

  1885. and

  1886. knowing

  1887. you

  1888. were a

  1889. part

  1890. of what

  1891. he

  1892. was

  1893. doing

  1894. and

  1895. there

  1896. is

  1897. nothing

  1898. even

  1899. close

  1900. to

  1901. as

  1902. good

  1903. as

  1904. that

  1905. our

  1906. heavenly

  1907. father

  1908. we

  1909. ask

  1910. that

  1911. you

  1912. would

  1913. bring

  1914. to

  1915. us

  1916. the

  1917. convictions

  1918. we

  1919. need

  1920. the

  1921. confidences

  1922. we

  1923. need

  1924. the

  1925. clarity

  1926. we

  1927. need

  1928. for

  1929. each

  1930. one

  1931. here

  1932. give

  1933. the

  1934. grace

  1935. for

  1936. what

  1937. they

  1938. are

  1939. in

  1940. to

  1941. see

  1942. what

  1943. you

  1944. say

  1945. is

  1946. true

  1947. to

  1948. believe

  1949. it

  1950. and

  1951. that

  1952. you

  1953. would

  1954. give

  1955. them

  1956. the

  1957. gift

  1958. of

  1959. increasing

  1960. joy

  1961. in

  1962. it

  1963. that

  1964. they

  1965. would

  1966. be

  1967. able

  1968. to

  1969. see

  1970. they

  1971. can

  1972. live

  1973. joyfully

  1974. amidst

  1975. these

  1976. burdens

  1977. help

  1978. them

  1979. give

  1980. them

  1981. a

  1982. taste

  1983. of

  1984. that

  1985. by

  1986. your

  1987. grace

  1988. in

  1989. Jesus

  1990. name

  1991. amen
