  1. Good morning. Thank you, Sean. Sorry I'm disentangling from my microphone here.

  2. If you would turn in your Bibles to Luke chapter 14.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  3. And while you're turning there, I will briefly just bring you greetings from your brothers and sisters at Covenant Fellowship Church out in the Philly suburbs.

  4. Sean described it well. I serve on the pastoral team of Covenant Fellowship.

  5. And by God's grace, through the years, we've had the ability at Covenant Fellowship to set different guys apart for different areas of ministry.

  6. So I've been set apart as part of the pastoral team to lead a separate nonprofit we established almost 20 years ago called Covenant Mercies,

  7. which exists to serve alongside our brothers and sisters in the developing world to care for orphans living in their communities.

  8. And so I will tell you more about Covenant Mercies and our programs on the other side of the sermon this morning.

  9. But it is good to be with you. I enjoyed spending time with Sean yesterday.

  10. We did a little Fenway tour and got a little taste of Boston.

  11. And just really love coming to different places and experiencing the fellowship of the Spirit together.

  12. Immediately, we're brothers and sisters.

  13. I know that I'm among family and it is wonderful to be with you this morning.

  14. So if you're with me in Luke chapter 14, I want to begin reading in verse 12.

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  15. And just to set the scene, Jesus has been invited to a dinner party.

  16. He's at the table of a Pharisee as we arrive at our text this morning.

  17. So beginning in verse 12,

  18. He, being Jesus, also said to the man who had invited him,

  19. When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your rich neighbors,

  20. lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid.

  21. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

  22. and you will be blessed because they cannot repay you.

  23. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.

  24. May the Lord bless the preaching of his word.

  25. We all know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of a kindness that seems to have strings attached.

  26. A kindness that seems a little more motivated by self-interest than by a true spirit of generosity.

  27. The classic example of this for me is what some guys I'll refer to as the squeegee guys in Philadelphia.

  28. I don't know if you've ever had this phenomenon in Boston as well,

  29. but there used to be these intersections in Philadelphia.

  30. I think they must have made this illegal now because I don't see it anymore.

  31. But you'd pull up to a red light,

  32. and immediately the guys would be on top of you with their windshield washers,

  33. and they'd start putting the windshield washer on your windshield.

  34. And, you know, if you were from out of town, you might say,

  35. Oh, wow, city of brother love.

  36. It's really true.

  37. The welcoming committee is here,

  38. and, you know, these guys are washing my window.

  39. Wow.

  40. Well, you would learn very quickly that that wasn't the case,

  41. that there was an expectation there as well.

  42. And by the way, I don't blame the squeegee guys.

  43. They're doing the best they can,

  44. and there's something that's commendable about that as well.

  45. But you'd learn very quickly,

  46. and some of them got very good at kind of halfway doing the job

  47. and then finding out whether you had anything for them

  48. to determine whether they would finish.

  49. My point is, from the perspective of the recipient of such a gesture,

  50. you can almost feel like there are certain types of generosity

  51. you need to be on your guard against

  52. because they're really no more than a thinly-veiled attempt

  53. to obligate you to do something in return.

  54. Well, this reciprocity ethic,

  55. the idea that I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine,

  56. was very common in the Greco-Roman world that Jesus lived in,

  57. very pervasive in Jewish society of that time as well.

  58. And so as Jesus sits at the table of this Pharisee,

  59. he knows well the mindset that he's addressing.

  60. One would act in a generous way toward others

  61. in order to elicit a similar generosity in return.

  62. And conversely, if someone extended a kindness to you,

  63. you'd feel an obligation,

  64. even an ethical obligation, to return the favor.

  65. So this reciprocity ethic,

  66. it's maybe not quite so pronounced in our modern Western societies,

  67. in our modern way of thinking,

  68. but it's undeniably present in our world today

  69. and in our interactions with one another.

  70. If we're honest, we really have to admit

  71. that there's very little we do in life

  72. that isn't somehow motivated by our own self-interest

  73. or influenced by our own self-interest.

  74. And on certain levels, that's perfectly okay.

  75. Think about the business context, right?

  76. I mean, in the business context,

  77. if you provide a product or a service for X number of dollars,

  78. and I'm happy to part with X number of dollars

  79. in exchange for that product or service,

  80. that really defines the ideal business transaction.

  81. And by the way,

  82. if that sounds like an endorsement of free market economic principles,

  83. it is.

  84. But that's not my point.

  85. My point is simply to say

  86. that it's not inherently wrong or evil

  87. to reciprocate in such a way.

  88. However, as Jesus so often does,

  89. he goes down beneath the surface here.

  90. He comes to us with questions

  91. that probe into the depths of our hearts

  92. and our motivations

  93. and push us beyond these natural human tendencies.

  94. See, Jesus calls us here to a selfless love

  95. that expends itself for others

  96. regardless of what they can give us in return.

  97. And I probably don't need to tell you

  98. that this doesn't come naturally to us.

  99. In our sinful nature,

  100. we are bent toward doing things

  101. that are in our own self-interest

  102. and toward neglecting things

  103. that really don't offer any personal benefit to us at all.

  104. And so against the grain of his own ancient culture,

  105. against the grain of our cultures of today,

  106. against the grain of our natural human tendencies

  107. and sinful nature,

  108. Jesus teaches us here

  109. that true Christian generosity

  110. goes beyond the bounds of reciprocity.

  111. In fact, one of the defining characteristics

  112. of generosity that is truly Christian,

  113. uniquely Christian,

  114. and by that I mean not just human generosity,

  115. but generosity that is uniquely driven by our faith,

  116. is its intentional focus

  117. on those who can do nothing to repay it.

  118. Jesus says,

  119. you want to know whether your love

  120. is truly Christian love?

  121. Love those who have no capacity

  122. to love you in return.

  123. You want to know whether your generosity

  124. is like that of your Father in heaven?

  125. Give toward those who can do nothing to repay you.

  126. This is generosity in its purest form,

  127. and Jesus wants to be sure

  128. that it's a present and visible trait

  129. in the life of his disciples.

  130. And so in the balance of our time in the word,

  131. I just want to make two observations

  132. about this generosity that Jesus commends to us.

  133. Just two points.

  134. Number one,

  135. it takes selfless, Christ-like initiative.

  136. This generosity that Jesus commends to us

  137. takes selfless, Christ-like initiative.

  138. Now, contrary to the way that Jesus' words

  139. may sound to us on face value,

  140. he's not forbidding us from having our friends over,

  141. from being generous toward our families

  142. and our loved ones,

  143. those we might enjoy hanging out with.

  144. In fact, if he was commending that to us,

  145. he would be commanding us to violate other scriptures.

  146. So he's certainly not saying that.

  147. Remember, Jesus is at the table of a Pharisee here.

  148. He knows what their practices are.

  149. He knows what our human tendencies are,

  150. as we've just been reflecting on.

  151. And so he's using some hyperbole here.

  152. He's using some intentionally strong language

  153. to jar us out of our complacency,

  154. to jar us out of our comfort zones,

  155. and to make a point.

  156. And so what point is Jesus making?

  157. Well, he's saying that as God's people,

  158. our generosity shouldn't be limited

  159. to that which is normal.

  160. It's normal to be generous toward those

  161. who can return the favor to us somehow.

  162. As disciples of Christ,

  163. we're called to take generous initiative

  164. toward those who can't repay us,

  165. and listen, I love this,

  166. precisely because they can't repay us.

  167. I just love the way Jesus explains the reason

  168. why we shouldn't invite our friends,

  169. our family, the rich,

  170. who we might want to hang out with

  171. to our little dinner party.

  172. He almost as if it should be intuitive to us.

  173. He says, no, don't do that.

  174. Don't invite them,

  175. lest they also invite you and you be repaid.

  176. I just want to say, oh yeah,

  177. what a tragedy that would be, right?

  178. I mean, let's say I invite Elon Musk

  179. and his wife to my home,

  180. and we have a nice dinner together,

  181. and then I get invited to their

  182. presumably palatial estate,

  183. and maybe Elon says,

  184. hey, let's go up in SpaceX.

  185. This one's on me.

  186. Jesus is not suggesting

  187. that that would be a tragedy.

  188. What he's saying is,

  189. that's the way the world thinks.

  190. That's the way the world operates.

  191. If your generosity remains only within those bounds,

  192. what difference really has the grace of God made?

  193. Read with me again in verses 13 and 14.

  194. But when you give a feast,

  195. invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

  196. and you will be blessed.

  197. Why will you be blessed?

  198. Because they cannot repay you.

  199. Notice that.

  200. He doesn't say you'll be blessed

  201. even though they can't repay you,

  202. or despite the fact that they can't repay you.

  203. No, you will be blessed

  204. because they cannot repay you.

  205. There's a cause-effect relationship here.

  206. The blessing for you

  207. is the direct result of the fact

  208. that you have selected,

  209. as the object of your generosity,

  210. those who cannot return the favor.

  211. And as you take initiative

  212. toward those who can't repay you,

  213. fully aware that they can't repay you,

  214. God promises that he will repay you

  215. for that very same reason.

  216. And this, Jesus says,

  217. is one of the things

  218. that ought to characterize us

  219. as Christians

  220. and distinguish us from the world.

  221. This is a characteristic

  222. that differentiates Christian love

  223. from love that we might think of

  224. as natural and normal

  225. even apart from Christ.

  226. Earlier in Luke's gospel,

  227. Jesus spoke in similar terms

  228. when calling us to love

  229. even our enemies.

  230. I think we have a slide

  231. of the verses in Luke 6,

  232. so you don't have to turn back there

  233. in your Bibles,

  234. but beginning in Luke 6,

    Luke 6:32

  235. verse 32,

  236. Jesus says,

  237. if you love those who love you,

  238. what benefit is that to you?

  239. For even sinners love

  240. those who love them.

  241. And if you do good

  242. to those who do good to you,

  243. what benefit is that to you?

  244. For even sinners do the same.

  245. And if you lend to those

  246. from whom you expect to receive,

  247. what credit is that to you?

  248. Even sinners lend to sinners

  249. to get back the same amount.

  250. But love your enemies

  251. and do good

  252. and lend expecting nothing

  253. in return

  254. and your reward will be great

  255. and you will be sons

  256. of the Most High.

  257. For He is kind

  258. to the ungrateful

  259. and the evil.

  260. Be merciful

  261. even as your Father

  262. is merciful.

  263. Now did you note

  264. the similar logic there?

  265. How do we demonstrate

  266. that we are sons and daughters

  267. of the Most High?

  268. Well it's not by merely

  269. doing the same things

  270. that are possible

  271. and even normal

  272. apart from faith.

  273. As Jesus might say,

  274. what credit is that to you?

  275. How does that distinguish you

  276. from the world?

  277. The world

  278. neglects to show kindness

  279. toward those

  280. who can do nothing

  281. to repay that kindness.

  282. But Jesus says,

  283. not so with you.

  284. It shall not be so for us

  285. as His disciples.

  286. We demonstrate

  287. that we are children

  288. of the Most High

  289. and disciples

  290. of His Son Jesus

  291. by taking initiative

  292. toward where it wouldn't

  293. be natural,

  294. where it wouldn't be normal

  295. for us to do so.

  296. By loving even our enemies.

  297. I think sometimes

  298. we get so familiar

  299. with those words

  300. rolling off of Jesus' tongue

  301. that it doesn't jar us

  302. the way that it should.

  303. Loving our enemies.

  304. These are the people

  305. that we would naturally hate.

  306. and in a similar way

  307. by intentionally ensuring

  308. that our generosity

  309. extends to those

  310. who can do nothing

  311. to repay it.

  312. Now let's bring the scene

  313. back to our Pharisees' table

  314. because a most profound accent

  315. is placed on Jesus' exhortation

  316. to us here

  317. in this simple fact.

  318. And it's a simple fact

  319. that goes right over the head

  320. of His original hearers

  321. as they sit around this table.

  322. We should see

  323. that it doesn't go over our heads

  324. this morning.

  325. It's even a rich reflection

  326. for this Advent season.

  327. That simple fact is this.

  328. The one who is sitting there

  329. with them at this table

  330. is Himself God incarnate.

  331. He's sitting there with Him

  332. because He didn't consider

  333. equality with God

  334. a thing to be grasped

  335. but humbled Himself,

  336. made Himself nothing,

  337. took the very nature

  338. of a servant

  339. and took initiative

  340. toward those

  341. who could do nothing

  342. to repay Him.

  343. Soon He'll turn His attention

  344. toward Calvary.

  345. He will move toward the cross

  346. and He will endure death

  347. on a cross

  348. for those who could do nothing

  349. to repay Him

  350. for His sacrifice.

  351. We sang about it this morning.

  352. Mild He lays His glory by,

  353. born that man no more may die.

  354. He left the glory

  355. and riches of heaven

  356. to seek and save

  357. lost sinners

  358. like you and me.

  359. Who could do nothing

  360. to repay Him?

  361. Now if you're here today

  362. and you're not a Christian

  363. or maybe you're exploring

  364. what the claims

  365. of the Christian faith

  366. are all about,

  367. I want to be abundantly clear

  368. about one thing

  369. right here.

  370. There is nothing you can do

  371. to repay God.

  372. You don't come to Jesus

  373. as a way of repaying God

  374. for the wrongs

  375. that you've done

  376. or repaying Him

  377. for the kindness

  378. that He's shown you.

  379. You come to Jesus

  380. as an act of faith,

  381. believing that His death

  382. and resurrection

  383. are sufficient

  384. to cover the penalty

  385. for your sins

  386. and restore your relationship

  387. to God.

  388. So we need to see

  389. that we don't get this backwards.

  390. But for those of us

  391. who are already

  392. in a position of faith

  393. this morning,

  394. I trust you see

  395. the rich gospel truth

  396. that's bound up

  397. in Jesus' calling

  398. to us here.

  399. Be merciful

  400. as your heavenly Father

  401. is merciful.

  402. Take initiative

  403. toward those

  404. who can do nothing

  405. to repay you.

  406. Lavish them with love

  407. and generosity

  408. and kindness.

  409. Why?

  410. Because that's exactly

  411. what Jesus did

  412. when He left behind

  413. the riches of heaven

  414. to come to earth

  415. and seek and save

  416. lost sinners

  417. like you and me.

  418. The generosity

  419. that Jesus commends

  420. to us here

  421. takes selfless

  422. Christ-like initiative

  423. toward those

  424. who can do nothing

  425. to repay it.

  426. Well, second observation

  427. about this generosity

  428. is simply that

  429. it's driven by faith.

  430. This generosity

  431. is driven by faith.

  432. Even as Jesus calls us

  433. to a generosity

  434. that's not self-interested,

  435. He simultaneously

  436. lifts our eyes

  437. to a reward

  438. that can only be seen

  439. through the eyes

  440. of faith.

  441. Again, reading verses

  442. 13 and 14.

  443. But when you give a feast,

  444. invite the poor,

  445. the crippled,

  446. the lame,

  447. the blind,

  448. and you will be blessed

  449. because they cannot

  450. repay you.

  451. For you will be repaid

  452. at the resurrection

  453. of the just.

  454. Amazingly,

  455. as we put off

  456. this normal human tendency

  457. to be motivated

  458. by the things

  459. of this world

  460. and take initiative

  461. instead toward those

  462. who can do nothing

  463. to repay us

  464. in this world's terms,

  465. Jesus promises us

  466. that we will be

  467. repaid in eternity.

  468. Now, we embrace

  469. this reward

  470. by faith,

  471. by simply trusting,

  472. by believing

  473. that what Jesus says

  474. to us here

  475. is rock-solid truth

  476. even though we can't

  477. see it and grasp it

  478. in the here and now.

  479. that what we sacrifice

  480. in this life

  481. will accrue

  482. to our credit

  483. in eternity.

  484. And this,

  485. brothers and sisters,

  486. is the great paradox

  487. of giving

  488. in the kingdom

  489. of God.

  490. It is a sacrifice

  491. to give

  492. toward those

  493. who can do nothing

  494. to repay us.

  495. We shouldn't pretend

  496. that it's not a sacrifice.

  497. It is.

  498. It will cost you something.

  499. It will cost you

  500. the ability

  501. to use those same funds

  502. toward some other purpose

  503. that might benefit you

  504. more in the here and now.

  505. But,

  506. when we consider

  507. that sacrifice

  508. in light of the

  509. eternal reward

  510. Jesus promises us here,

  511. it really is

  512. no sacrifice at all.

  513. It's better thought of

  514. as an investment.

  515. And this is about

  516. the most secure investment

  517. that you could possibly make.

  518. If you think about it,

  519. there are many sacrifices

  520. that we make in life

  521. in the short term

  522. for a result

  523. that we expect

  524. to receive

  525. in the long term, right?

  526. I happen to be someone

  527. who loves gardening.

  528. Sean was asking me yesterday,

  529. what do you enjoy doing?

  530. Well, I love

  531. getting out on my day off,

  532. especially in the springtime,

  533. get some dirt

  534. under my fingernails,

  535. and I love planting

  536. those vegetables

  537. in the spring

  538. and just enjoying

  539. the fruit of it

  540. all summer long.

  541. A few years ago,

  542. I began to really get

  543. into planting

  544. and cultivating

  545. perennial fruit-bearing bushes,

  546. especially blueberries.

  547. And so when I,

  548. we've got about an acre,

  549. sorry, I know

  550. that's a little weird

  551. for city dwellers, I guess,

  552. but we've got a whole acre

  553. and I love,

  554. I got 11 blueberry bushes

  555. of different varieties

  556. and got them spread around

  557. different places

  558. in our yard.

  559. And I just love

  560. getting out there

  561. and cultivating these bushes

  562. and you've got to do

  563. a little research

  564. to do blueberries right.

  565. So I did my research up front.

  566. I had to amend our soil.

  567. The blueberries like

  568. a more acidic soil,

  569. so I had to put the right

  570. kind of components

  571. into the soil

  572. so that they would thrive.

  573. They have very shallow

  574. root systems,

  575. so you want to, you know,

  576. mulch heavily around them

  577. and keep them kind of wet.

  578. But the third thing

  579. that I learned,

  580. and this is what I want

  581. to focus on here,

  582. is that when you plant

  583. baby blueberry bushes,

  584. you need to pinch the blossoms

  585. for the first three seasons.

  586. That's the advice

  587. that you're given.

  588. So plant it from a little baby,

  589. little stick, basically.

  590. It takes root.

  591. It begins to leaf out

  592. in the spring

  593. and blossoms come out.

  594. And then they tell you,

  595. pinch the blossoms

  596. those first three seasons

  597. because what you're doing

  598. is you're telling the plant,

  599. don't focus any of your energies

  600. on producing fruit.

  601. Those blossoms,

  602. I'm guessing you know,

  603. are what become the berries

  604. after the bees

  605. do their miraculous work.

  606. So you pinch the blossoms

  607. and you're saying,

  608. don't spend your energy

  609. producing fruit.

  610. Spend your energy

  611. developing a strong root system.

  612. And then if you get

  613. a good solid blueberry bush,

  614. it might produce fruit

  615. for you for 75 years.

  616. So I followed that advice.

  617. I remember the first two seasons,

  618. it wasn't too difficult.

  619. There's only a few blossoms.

  620. That third season,

  621. it was a little harder

  622. because, all right,

  623. we've been at this

  624. for a while now.

  625. I'd like to taste

  626. the fruit of my labors.

  627. And the blossoms

  628. are a little more plentiful.

  629. But I remember

  630. being very intentional

  631. and saying,

  632. no, I could taste

  633. these blueberries now,

  634. but I'm going to do

  635. what I've been told.

  636. I'm going to pinch

  637. these blossoms

  638. and I will trust

  639. that that will produce

  640. more fruit for me

  641. in the long run.

  642. Well, last year,

  643. we got 72 pints

  644. of blueberries, by the way.

  645. So it's working out

  646. pretty well so far,

  647. although I think

  648. we're only scratching

  649. the surface.

  650. But my point is,

  651. what Jesus is saying

  652. to us here is,

  653. do you want to be satisfied

  654. with a couple of handfuls

  655. of blueberries now?

  656. Or will you believe me

  657. that by sacrificing

  658. that small pleasure now,

  659. you will receive

  660. an abundant harvest

  661. that you cannot even fathom

  662. in this moment?

  663. Well, this is a reward

  664. that can only be seen

  665. by faith.

  666. And I believe God is glorified,

  667. even uniquely glorified

  668. in a way,

  669. when we simply take him

  670. at his word.

  671. Even though we can't

  672. grasp it right now,

  673. we take him at his word.

  674. We say, yes, Jesus,

  675. I'm going to live my life

  676. in light of that reality.

  677. When we fix our eyes,

  678. not on the things

  679. that are seen,

  680. but on the things

  681. that are unseen.

  682. Because the things

  683. that are seen

  684. are transient,

  685. but the things

  686. that are unseen

  687. are eternal.

  688. So Jesus is lifting

  689. our eyes

  690. to that unseen reward,

  691. which,

  692. though unseen,

  693. is every bit as real

  694. as the tangible sacrifice,

  695. only far more lasting.

  696. Several years ago,

  697. I became aware

  698. of a couple

  699. in my home church

  700. who were sponsoring

  701. seven children

  702. through our

  703. orphan sponsorship program.

  704. In a few minutes,

  705. I'll tell you more

  706. about our orphan

  707. sponsorship program.

  708. But this couple

  709. was sponsoring

  710. seven children.

  711. And by the way,

  712. I don't look

  713. through our database

  714. to find out

  715. how many children

  716. my friends are sponsoring.

  717. I just stumbled

  718. upon this information.

  719. And it was notable to me,

  720. not just by the number seven,

  721. which is very nice,

  722. but frankly,

  723. we have people

  724. who are sponsoring more.

  725. What was notable to me

  726. is that I know

  727. this couple very well,

  728. and I know

  729. their standard of living.

  730. They're just a very normal,

  731. I would even say,

  732. solidly middle class,

  733. working class family.

  734. And it was notable to me

  735. that they were sponsoring

  736. seven children.

  737. So once I became aware of that,

  738. I just said,

  739. I got to drop them

  740. a note in the mail,

  741. let them know

  742. how much I'm,

  743. how grateful I am

  744. that they're giving

  745. sacrificially like that

  746. toward our children.

  747. So I dropped a note

  748. in the mail.

  749. Sometime later,

  750. we bumped into each other,

  751. and they referenced the note,

  752. so we had a little

  753. conversation about it.

  754. And I came to learn

  755. that this couple,

  756. just like most of us,

  757. when we launched

  758. the sponsorship program

  759. way back in 2003,

  760. they started by sponsoring

  761. one or maybe two children.

  762. And then each year,

  763. as the husband,

  764. as the breadwinner

  765. of that home,

  766. would receive a raise,

  767. they would just add

  768. one more sponsored child.

  769. Just kind of based

  770. on the premise

  771. that the Lord provided

  772. well for us last year

  773. with the income

  774. that we had.

  775. Now he's given us

  776. an increase.

  777. Let's share a little bit

  778. of that increase

  779. with a child in need.

  780. And I was just

  781. blown away by this.

  782. In fact,

  783. because I was bringing

  784. this message again,

  785. I checked in our database again,

  786. and sure enough,

  787. this couple's up to 13

  788. sponsored children now.

  789. So they're investing

  790. in a major way

  791. in our ministry,

  792. even though they're

  793. just living a very normal

  794. American lifestyle.

  795. My point in bringing

  796. up their example

  797. is not to say

  798. that we should all

  799. be sponsoring 13 kids,

  800. or we should all

  801. follow that practice

  802. of adding one new child

  803. each year.

  804. My point is simply

  805. to say this is a family

  806. not of significant means.

  807. The sacrifice

  808. they're making is real.

  809. They could be using

  810. those funds

  811. for some other purpose

  812. to enhance

  813. their own standard of living.

  814. And you know what?

  815. None of us

  816. would even take notice.

  817. None of us would say,

  818. wow,

  819. they're living high on the hog,

  820. or that's self-indulgent.

  821. We would never know

  822. the difference.

  823. But this couple

  824. is not living

  825. in accordance

  826. with the things

  827. of this world.

  828. This is a couple

  829. whose eyes are fixed

  830. not on the things

  831. that are unseen,

  832. but on the things,

  833. not on the things

  834. that are seen,

  835. but on the things

  836. that are unseen.

  837. They are sacrificing

  838. in the here and now

  839. for a reward

  840. that's being kept

  841. in heaven for them

  842. where moth and rust

  843. will not destroy,

  844. and where thieves

  845. will not break in

  846. and steal.

  847. Well, I don't know

  848. about you,

  849. but I want to live

  850. my life in light

  851. of that reality

  852. as well.

  853. And when I think

  854. of our,

  855. when I think

  856. of Jesus' exhortation

  857. here in Luke 14

  858. to be generous

  859. toward those

  860. who can do nothing

  861. to repay us,

  862. I really can't help

  863. but think of the children

  864. who are growing up

  865. sponsored in our

  866. orphan sponsorship program.

  867. If you are sponsoring

  868. children through

  869. our program,

  870. it is virtually impossible

  871. that they will ever

  872. be able to give back

  873. to you,

  874. to do anything

  875. to repay you

  876. for your sacrifice.

  877. Well, that is exactly

  878. the kind of giving

  879. that Jesus is commending

  880. to us in this passage.

  881. It's precisely this kind

  882. of generosity

  883. that he promises

  884. to repay

  885. at the resurrection

  886. of the just.

  887. And his use of that phrase,

  888. the resurrection

  889. of the just,

  890. immediately puts me

  891. in mind of Matthew 25

  892. where Jesus talks

  893. about the final day

  894. and he talks about

  895. saying to us

  896. that enter into

  897. your reward

  898. for when I was hungry

  899. you fed me,

  900. when I was thirsty

  901. you gave me something

  902. to drink,

  903. when I was in prison

  904. you visited me,

  905. and we'll say,

  906. Jesus, when did we do

  907. all these things?

  908. And he'll say,

  909. even as you've done

  910. it to the least of these,

  911. my brethren,

  912. you've done it unto me.

  913. Now, I just imagine,

  914. this is my imagination now,

  915. we're outside of Matthew 25,

  916. but I just imagine

  917. that Jesus might

  918. in that moment

  919. pull up a young lady

  920. by his side

  921. and say,

  922. this is Kalkidan.

  923. I want you to know Kalkidan.

  924. She was born with HIV

  925. in Ethiopia,

  926. both of her parents

  927. had lost their lives

  928. to AIDS,

  929. she was on a trajectory

  930. to die of AIDS as well,

  931. but because you gave

  932. to her

  933. when there was nothing

  934. she could give you

  935. in return,

  936. she was restored

  937. to good health.

  938. And this also brought

  939. a lady named Helena

  940. into her life,

  941. and Helena shared

  942. the gospel with her

  943. and led her to faith.

  944. Kalkidan is here today

  945. because you gave

  946. when there was nothing

  947. she could give you

  948. in return.

  949. Or maybe he'll pull up

  950. a young man by his side

  951. and say,

  952. this is Charles,

  953. you should know Charles.

  954. Charles was born in Zambia,

  955. he was able to go to school

  956. because you invested

  957. in Lighthouse Christian School,

  958. he was able to get

  959. a quality education,

  960. he even gave his life

  961. to Jesus as a young boy

  962. because of a VBS

  963. they did on a school break

  964. at Lighthouse Christian School.

  965. Later he was able

  966. to access a scholarship program

  967. and go off to university,

  968. he became a teacher

  969. and he was able

  970. to influence the lives

  971. of so many others

  972. because you gave to him

  973. when there was nothing

  974. he could give you

  975. in return.

  976. My mind can just get going

  977. when I think about

  978. the ripple effects

  979. of the investments

  980. we're making

  981. into these children's lives now.

  982. Think of the ripple effects,

  983. think of the future children

  984. and grandchildren,

  985. of the children

  986. that we're giving toward now

  987. who will know

  988. the love of Jesus

  989. because their mother

  990. or their grandfather

  991. received Christ

  992. when he was just

  993. a little child

  994. running around the community

  995. with insufficient care

  996. but somebody invested

  997. into him.

  998. Well I believe

  999. part of our reward

  1000. in eternity

1001. will be the joy of seeing

1002. with the eyes of eternity

  1003. the full glorious impact

1004. that our acts of kindness

  1005. and generosity

  1006. we're able to achieve

  1007. in this life.

1008. It takes the eyes of faith

  1009. to see that

1010. in the here and now

  1011. and I couldn't be more grateful

  1012. for the faith

  1013. that God has given

  1014. to so many

  1015. who have invested generously

1016. in the work of Covenant Mercies

  1017. for 19 years now.

1018. So I'm going to turn the corner now

1019. and just start to introduce you

  1020. to the ministry

  1021. of Covenant Mercies

1022. which will turn 20 next year.

  1023. We're about to

1024. become young adults I guess.

  1025. The main centerpiece

  1026. of Covenant Mercies

  1027. ministry

  1028. has always been

  1029. what we call

  1030. our orphan sponsorship program

1031. and it's through this program

  1032. that sponsors are able

  1033. to invest

  1034. into the life

  1035. of a fatherless child.

  1036. So for the purposes

  1037. of our program

  1038. we define an orphan

  1039. as a fatherless child.

  1040. Sometimes the mother

  1041. is still alive

  1042. other times

  1043. they've lost both parents

  1044. and grandparents

1045. have taken the children in

1046. or an aunt or an uncle

1047. has taken the children in

1048. and then through the teams

1049. we build on the ground

  1050. with our indigenous

  1051. church partners

1052. we're able to go out

  1053. into the community

  1054. and to deliver

  1055. some basic nutritional,

  1056. medical,

  1057. and educational care

  1058. into the lives

  1059. of the children.

1060. Well it is an exciting time

  1061. for us

  1062. after 19 years

  1063. of ministry

  1064. you might imagine

1065. a lot of the children

  1066. that we started with

  1067. when we were young

  1068. as a ministry

1069. they were very young children

  1070. and now they're

  1071. beginning to graduate

  1072. from our programs

  1073. and take their place

  1074. in society

  1075. as young adults.

  1076. So some of them

  1077. are able to express

  1078. in their own words

  1079. the impact that

  1080. the program has had

  1081. in their lives

1082. so I want to introduce you

  1083. to a young lady

  1084. named Masai

  1085. from our program

  1086. in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

  1087. she's now a graduate

  1088. of that program.

1089. I'm told there might be

  1090. a little bit of a delay

  1091. in the audio

  1092. of the video

  1093. but hopefully

  1094. you'll catch it.

1095. My name is Masai Ayyeli

1096. I was born in Addis Ababa

  1097. I'm 17 years old

  1098. the reason we came

  1099. to Covenant Mercies

  1100. is because

  1101. we were in trouble

  1102. my dad died

  1103. and then my mom

  1104. couldn't find a job

  1105. we didn't have

  1106. anything in the house

  1107. so we left

1108. and went to the street

  1109. that's when

  1110. Covenant Mercies

  1111. found us

  1112. they helped me

  1113. attend school

  1114. they got us

1115. to where we are now

  1116. Masai had a little

  1117. fight with her mom

  1118. it was very

  1119. like minor thing

  1120. and then

  1121. she said

  1122. bad things

  1123. about her mom

  1124. and then

  1125. she was cursing her

  1126. she was feeling

  1127. really bad

  1128. and then she

  1129. left the house

  1130. when I got

  1131. on the street

  1132. I couldn't find

  1133. a place

  1134. to spend the night

  1135. I stayed

  1136. three weeks

  1137. on the street

  1138. and then I found

  1139. some girls

  1140. and they befriended me

  1141. and we begged

  1142. people to give us

  1143. money to pay

  1144. for bed

  1145. each night

  1146. Helena kept

  1147. calling my mom

  1148. and she couldn't

  1149. find me

  1150. for a long time

  1151. so my mom

  1152. came

  1153. and she found

  1154. me where I used

  1155. to be

  1156. she told me

  1157. Helena been

  1158. looking for you

  1159. she wants

  1160. to talk to you

  1161. so in our

  1162. meeting

  1163. Masai was

  1164. she was

  1165. she was so

  1166. stubborn

  1167. she said

  1168. she doesn't

  1169. want to

  1170. there is no

  1171. need for her

  1172. to talk to us

  1173. but she just

  1174. simply came here

  1175. to tell us

  1176. that she doesn't

  1177. want to be

  1178. part of the program

  1179. I told her

  1180. I want to get

  1181. out of this

  1182. sponsorship

  1183. delete my name

  1184. I was going

  1185. to leave

  1186. and she said

  1187. ok let's pray

  1188. before we leave

  1189. but then

  1190. I asked her

  1191. if it's ok

  1192. for us to pray

  1193. and then we

  1194. prayed

  1195. and

  1196. surprisingly

  1197. after the prayer

  1198. she was a

  1199. different person

  1200. and then when

  1201. I asked her

  1202. to write

  1203. her goals

  1204. the goals

  1205. she was writing

  1206. was completely

  1207. different

  1208. like she was

  1209. saying she

  1210. wants to

  1211. go back to

  1212. school

  1213. make peace

  1214. with her

  1215. mother

  1216. and then

  1217. start old

  1218. friendships

  1219. with healthy

  1220. friends

  1221. and then

  1222. start studying

  1223. hair styling

  1224. which is her

  1225. dream

  1226. since I

  1227. returned to

  1228. the Lord

  1229. he has

  1230. done a

  1231. lot of

  1232. great

  1233. things

  1234. in my

  1235. life

  1236. I read

  1237. my Bible

  1238. I go to

  1239. church

  1240. and I

  1241. obtained

  1242. some of

  1243. the Bible

  1244. classes

  1245. those are

  1246. great times

  1247. the Lord

  1248. has done

  1249. great things

  1250. in my

  1251. life

  1252. now my

  1253. relationship

  1254. with my

  1255. family is

  1256. so much

  1257. better than

  1258. it was

  1259. before

  1260. it's

  1261. joyful

  1262. before

  1263. we didn't

  1264. have peace

  1265. in the

  1266. house

  1267. but now

  1268. we all

  1269. love each

  1270. other

  1271. and live

  1272. together

  1273. in peace

  1274. after I

  1275. finish school

  1276. I want

  1277. to help

  1278. people

  1279. who are

  1280. like I

  1281. used to

  1282. be

  1283. what I

  1284. want to

  1285. say to

  1286. my

  1287. sponsors

  1288. I run

  1289. out of

  1290. words

  1291. when I

  1292. think

  1293. about

  1294. them

  1295. may

  1296. God

  1297. retay

  1298. them

  1299. may

  1300. God

  1301. give

  1302. them

  1303. all

  1304. kinds

  1305. of

  1306. good

  1307. gifts

  1308. the

  1309. Lord

  1310. is

  1311. great

  1312. and

  1313. will

  1314. do

  1315. great

  1316. things

  1317. in my

  1318. life

  1319. I

  1320. know

  1321. that

  1322. there's

  1323. so many

  1324. reasons I

  1325. love to

  1326. show that

  1327. video as an

  1328. introduction

  1329. of our

  1330. ministry

  1331. and I

  1332. don't

  1333. I

  1334. won't take

  1335. long to

  1336. highlight

  1337. them

  1338. but just

  1339. briefly

  1340. obviously

  1341. Messiah's

  1342. deep

  1343. appreciation

  1344. for the

  1345. difference

  1346. that her

  1347. sponsor has

  1348. made in

  1349. her life

  1350. by persevering

  1351. with her

  1352. and giving

  1353. even through

  1354. those kind

  1355. of challenges

  1356. the emphasis

  1357. on the

  1358. family

  1359. we work

  1360. with the

  1361. family

  1362. and we

  1363. see it

  1364. as a

  1365. provision

  1366. of God's

  1367. common

  1368. grace

  1369. that family

  1370. ties are

  1371. very strong

  1372. in all the

  1373. African

  1374. nations

  1375. where we're

  1376. working

  1377. and so

  1378. rather than

  1379. removing the

  1380. children from

  1381. that context

  1382. in an

  1383. institutional

  1384. setting

  1385. we just

  1386. come alongside

  1387. the family

  1388. and it's a

  1389. beautiful story

  1390. there of the

  1391. restoration of

  1392. that family

  1393. and then

  1394. I just love

  1395. the opportunity

  1396. to introduce

  1397. you to some

  1398. of the

  1399. godly

  1400. competent

  1401. indigenous

  1402. leaders that

  1403. the Lord

  1404. has provided

  1405. for us

  1406. so you get

  1407. to know

  1408. Helena a

  1409. little bit

  1410. there

  1411. we are

  1412. blessed

  1413. with such

  1414. competent

  1415. and godly

  1416. brothers and

  1417. sisters that

  1418. we are

  1419. working with

  1420. and they are

  1421. integral to

  1422. our ministry

  1423. in covenant

  1424. mercy

  1425. so a few

  1426. of our

  1427. core values

  1428. come out

  1429. in that

  1430. way

  1431. even just

  1432. in telling

  1433. Messiah's

  1434. story

  1435. well through

  1436. 19 years

  1437. of ministry

  1438. in sub-Saharan

  1439. Africa

  1440. we have

  1441. learned that

  1442. effectively

  1443. breaking cycles

  1444. of poverty

  1445. and making

  1446. a significant

  1447. difference in

  1448. the life

  1449. of our

  1450. children

  1451. requires an

  1452. intentional

  1453. and increasingly

  1454. direct investment

  1455. in the education

  1456. of our children

  1457. from day one

  1458. in our program

  1459. education has

  1460. always been

  1461. important and

  1462. we've always

  1463. recognized

  1464. it's going

  1465. to be critical

  1466. to help these

  1467. children break

  1468. out of cycles

  1469. of poverty

  1470. and yet

  1471. simply putting

  1472. a child in

  1473. a school

  1474. uniform

  1475. paying their

  1476. school fees

  1477. providing them

  1478. with the basic

  1479. necessities of

  1480. going to school

  1481. isn't enough

  1482. in many cases

  1483. when a hundred

  1484. other students

  1485. may be in the

  1486. classroom with

  1487. them depending

  1488. on which program

  1489. area we're talking

  1490. about and maybe

  1491. there's one teacher

  1492. and a few textbooks

  1493. to share among

  1494. those hundred

  1495. students

  1496. if our goal

  1497. and this is the

  1498. way we define

  1499. our goal in the

  1500. life of each

  1501. individual child

  1502. if our goal

  1503. is to restore

  1504. them to everything

  1505. God has created

  1506. them to be

  1507. as his image

  1508. bearers

  1509. then an investment

  1510. into their

  1511. education will be

  1512. critically important

  1513. for us

  1514. and a hundred

  1515. students in a

  1516. single classroom

  1517. will be a major

  1518. obstacle

  1519. that's why 15

  1520. years ago now

  1521. we began

  1522. collaborating with

  1523. our partners at

  1524. Lighthouse Christian

  1525. School in

  1526. Zambia

  1527. in 2006

  1528. we sponsored

  1529. just one classroom

  1530. of kindergarten

  1531. students

  1532. and then we

  1533. just grew the

  1534. school by adding

  1535. one new grade

  1536. each year to

  1537. the point that

  1538. today we have

  1539. children in grades

  1540. pre-k through

  1541. grade 7 at

  1542. Lighthouse serving

  1543. more than 300

  1544. students each and

  1545. every year to

  1546. receive quality

  1547. Christian education

  1548. there

  1549. we also partnered

  1550. with our partners

  1551. there to buy

  1552. land and develop

  1553. the campus through

  1554. the years as the

  1555. school has grown

  1556. so I think you're

  1557. looking at some

  1558. of the pictures of

  1559. the campus that we

  1560. have developed

  1561. over the years

  1562. we've been so

  1563. pleased with our

  1564. investment into the

  1565. students there at

  1566. Lighthouse that a

  1567. couple of years ago

  1568. in March 2019 we

  1569. broke ground on

  1570. Hope Community

  1571. Primary School in

  1572. western Uganda

  1573. where we have about

  1574. 500 of our

  1575. sponsored children

  1576. and this was after

  1577. spending much of

  1578. oh first you're

  1579. looking at the

  1580. groundbreaking photo

  1581. that man with the

  1582. big smile on his

  1583. face on the far

  1584. right is Moses

  1585. Nkwatsibwe he's the

  1586. pastor of our

  1587. partner church there

  1588. and we have had

  1589. so much joy in

  1590. developing this

  1591. school project with

  1592. them I think you've

1593. got a slide of our

1594. this is the site plan

  1595. that Lord willing we

1596. will phase in over a

  1597. period of years and

  1598. by God's grace we

  1599. were we've been able

  1600. to complete phase one

  1601. very quickly and so

  1602. you can get an

  1603. overhead view by the

1604. way you can rent a

  1605. drone in western

  1606. Africa or western

  1607. Uganda so the next

  1608. photo will show you

  1609. the progress we've

  1610. made on that campus

  1611. thus far and we

  1612. had the joy of

  1613. opening that school

  1614. in February 2020

  1615. for about 90

  1616. students in grades

  1617. pre-k through grade

1618. one and we plan to

1619. add a new grade each

  1620. each year just as

  1621. we've done at

  1622. lighthouse in Zambia

  1623. and continue to grow

  1624. that school so that

  1625. by 2026 Lord willing

  1626. we'll be doing the

  1627. same thing grades

  1628. pre-k through grade

  1629. seven we'll have

  1630. hundreds of students

  1631. that will were able

  1632. to serve in this

  1633. severely underserved

  1634. region of Uganda by

  1635. that year now our

  1636. sponsorship program

  1637. carries the children

  1638. through grade 12 or

  1639. the basic vocational

  1640. school equivalent but

  1641. in recent years we

  1642. have also established

  1643. what we call the

  1644. Mapalo Scholarship

  1645. Fund for Higher

  1646. Education this is for

  1647. graduates of our

  1648. sponsorship program so

  1649. if they're able to

  1650. graduate from grade 12

1651. and they are eligible to

  1652. continue on for

  1653. university studies

  1654. they're also eligible to

  1655. apply for a scholarship

  1656. through our Mapalo

  1657. Fund Mapalo means

  1658. blessing and it sort

  1659. of provides the blessing

  1660. of continuing studies for

  1661. those students who are

1662. eligible well one of our

  1663. current Mapalo scholars is

1664. a young man named Michael

1665. Nkata and I think we got a

  1666. photo of Michael circa

1667. 2008 when he was first

  1668. enrolled in our program

1669. lost both of his parents

1670. raised by his aunt near the

1671. school and from the time he

  1672. was enrolled at Lighthouse

  1673. Christian school he was

  1674. just a standout student

  1675. the teachers were keeping

1676. their eye on him through

1677. the years well fast forward

  1678. to today he's now a

  1679. pre-med student at the

1680. University of Zambia on a

  1681. combined government and

  1682. Mapalo scholarship so he

  1683. earned a 75% scholarship

  1684. through a government

  1685. scholarship program and

1686. then we were just topping

1687. up the final 25% to send

1688. him on a full scholarship to

1689. the University of Zambia in

  1690. his Mapalo application

  1691. Michael described his desire

1692. to become a doctor and his

  1693. desire to serve the

1694. underserved as a doctor in

1695. the following way he said

1696. quote being an orphan and

1697. being raised in a community

1698. of people with low social

1699. status has made me want to

1700. study hard and be one person

1701. who came from such a

1702. background and still made it

1703. in life and be able to give

1704. hope to people where hope has

1705. died and I just remember when

1706. I was have the pleasure of

  1707. reading these Mapalo

1708. applications as they come in

1709. and just being part of the

  1710. decision process and I

  1711. remember reading that

  1712. statement in Michael's

  1713. application and just being

1714. struck with the fact that

1715. you know Michael is able to

  1716. pursue that dream today

  1717. because somebody gave him

1718. hope where his hope might

  1719. have died because someone

1720. gave to him when there was

1721. nothing he could do to repay

1722. them and all of this in

1723. response to Christ who came

1724. to us when there was

1725. nothing we could do to pay

1726. him back well there are

1727. many ways that we can

  1728. respond to this this

  1729. exhortation from Jesus in

  1730. Luke chapter 14 and I'm

    Luke 14 chapter mention

  1731. certainly not here this

  1732. morning to say that

  1733. covenant mercies is the

1734. only way to respond but I

1735. do want to invite you to

  1736. consider whether you might

1737. want to join hands with us in

1738. a few different ways first of

  1739. all your sponsorship of

1740. children is what enables our

1741. partners on the ground like

1742. pastor Moses there like Helena

1743. and others to you mobilize

1744. them as a sponsor to go and

1745. and serve in our children's

1746. lives and to build that

1747. bridge for the gospel into

1748. their lives and even the

1749. lives of their families so we

1750. have a table in the reception

1751. area over here where we'll be

  1752. hanging out afterwards and

1753. there are profiles of children

1754. who are awaiting sponsors if

  1755. you'd want to consider

1756. sponsoring children I'd be happy

1757. to answer any questions that

1758. you may have about that the

  1759. schools that we're developing

1760. are we raise funds separately

1761. for those schools so we don't

  1762. utilize the sponsorship funds

  1763. sponsors give $39 a month and

  1764. that's a direct investment into

1765. the life of that child but we

1766. raise funds in other ways to

1767. develop those schools and then

1768. Lord willing years down the

1769. road we will have more of those

1770. students who are eligible to

1771. continue on for higher higher

1772. education studies and so we are

1773. building them Apollo fund today

1774. with that future day in mind in

1775. the end we trust that these

  1776. young people will become

  1777. influencers in their home

  1778. communities influencers in

  1779. their families in their

  1780. churches in their communities

1781. and those ripple effects that

1782. we were kind of dreaming out loud

1783. about earlier will take shape

1784. through their lives well again I

1785. hope you'll stop by the table and

  1786. consider perhaps sponsoring

  1787. children we are I didn't even

  1788. mention we're up to almost 1600

1789. sponsored children in those three

1790. different countries in fact you'd

1791. send me home a very happy man if

1792. the 16 kids in there were

1793. sponsored and that would push us

1794. over 1600 but those are just

1795. numbers please we also have some

1796. as I mentioned you know we raise

1797. funds in other ways for those

  1798. school projects and different

1799. things that we invest funds in

1800. outside of sponsorship so we have

1801. some merchandise I've got these

1802. beautiful do justice love mercy

  1803. Micah 6 8 t-shirts that that we

1804. sell for all the extra small

1805. through extra large people on your

1806. Christmas list also have these

1807. beautiful true Africa photo books

1808. dear friend of mine traveled with

1809. me several times to all the

1810. African nations where we serve and

1811. he's just you can we've got one

1812. there you can leave through it's a

1813. little pricier but you could

1814. consider that as well as a gift for

1815. someone perhaps and also a gift for

1816. us as a ministry regardless of

1817. whether you decide to join hands

  1818. with covenant mercies specifically

1819. today may we all grow even this

1820. Advent season may we all grow in

1821. this generosity that Jesus commends

1822. to us may we grow to be disciples

  1823. who take selfless Christ-like

1824. initiative toward those who could do

1825. nothing to repay us knowing knowing

1826. with the confidence of faith that we

1827. will be repaid at the resurrection of

  1828. the just amen
