  1. Heavenly Father, we confess, we confess this faith that your word is true.

  2. That your word is able to make us wise on salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

  3. So that's what we see this morning.

  4. We want to be made wise on salvation.

  5. We want to behold Jesus in all of his glory.

  6. To speak to us.

  7. Move among us by the power of Holy Spirit.

  8. That we might see the face of Jesus.

  9. We might hear his voice.

  10. Your word is true.

  11. In Jesus' name we say.

  12. Amen.

  13. Acts chapter 21.

    Acts 21 chapter mention

  14. When the seven days were all created, the Jews from Asia, seeing him in the temple, stirred up the whole crowd and laid hands on him.

  15. Paul.

  16. Crying out.

  17. Men of Israel.

  18. Help.

  19. This is the man who was teaching everyone everywhere against the people and the law and this place.

  20. Moreover, he even brought Greeks into his temple.

  21. And as he filed this holy place, they had previously seen children.

  22. He issued with him the city.

  23. And he supposed that Paul had brought Greeks into his temple.

  24. Then all the city was stirred up and the people ran together.

  25. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple.

  26. And at once the gates were shut.

  27. And as they were seeking to kill him, word came to the tribune of the cult that all Jerusalem was in the tribune.

  28. He at once took soldiers and centurions and ran down from them.

  29. And when they saw the tribune and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

  30. Then the tribune came up and arrested him and ordered him to be bound with two chains.

  31. He inquired who he was and what he had done.

  32. Some in the crowd were shouting one thing, some another.

  33. And as he could not learn the facts because of the uproar, he ordered him to be brought into the barracks.

  34. And when he came to the steps, he was actually carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the crowd.

  35. For the mob of the people followed cried out, away with him.

  36. As Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he said to the tribune,

  37. May I say something to you?

  38. And he said, Do you know Greek?

  39. Are you not Egyptian, then, who recently stirred up a revolt and led the four thousand men of the assassins out into the wilderness?

  40. Paul replied, I am a Jew from Tarsus in Solis, a citizen of no obscure city.

  41. I beg you, permit me to speak to you.

  42. And when he had given him permission, Paul, standing on the steps, motioned with his hands to the people.

  43. And when there was a Greek hush, he addressed them in the Hebrew language, saying,

  44. Brothers and fathers, hear the defense that I now make before you.

  45. And when they heard that he was addressed to them in the Hebrew language, they became even more part.

  46. And he said,

  47. I am a Jew born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel,

  48. according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers.

  49. Being zealous for God, as all of you are this day,

  50. I persecuted this way to the dead, binding and delivering to prison both men and women,

  51. as the high priest and the whole council of elders can bear me witness.

  52. From them I received letters to the brothers, and I journeyed toward Damascus to take those also who are there

  53. and bring them in Jerusalem to be punished.

  54. As I was on my way and too near to Damascus, about noon, a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me.

  55. And I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me,

  56. Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?

  57. And I answered,

  58. Who are you?

  59. And he said to me,

  60. I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuted.

  61. Now those who were with me saw the light,

  62. but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me.

  63. And I said,

  64. What shall I do?

  65. And the Lord said to me,

  66. Rise and go into Damascus,

  67. and there you will be told all that is appointed for you to do.

  68. And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light,

  69. I was led by the hand by those who were with me and came into Damascus.

  70. And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law,

  71. well spoken of by all the truth who lived there,

  72. came to me,

  73. and standing by me said to me,

  74. Brother Saul, receive your sight.

  75. And at that very hour I received my sight and saw him.

  76. And he said,

  77. The God of our fathers appointed you to know his will,

  78. to see the righteous one,

  79. and to hear a voice from his mouth.

  80. For you will be a witness for him to everyone of what you have seen and heard.

  81. And now,

  82. why do you wait?

  83. Rise and be baptized,

  84. and wash away your sins,

  85. calling on his name.

  86. When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple,

  87. I fell into a trance and saw him saying to me,

  88. Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly,

  89. because they will not accept your testimony about me.

  90. And I said,

  91. Lord,

  92. they themselves know that in one synagogue,

  93. after another,

  94. I imprisoned them Jesus to believe in you.

  95. And when the blood of Stephen your witness was being shed,

  96. I myself was standing by and approving,

  97. and watching over the garments of those who killed him.

  98. And he said to me,

  99. Go,

  100. for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.

  101. This is God's holy word.

  102. People who oppose Christ in the gospel

  103. have a tendency to frame Christians

  104. with the phrase,

  105. Against this.

  106. Christians are against that.

  107. Against this.

  108. And they try to define believers in those terms.

  109. And that's exactly what the Jews here do to Paul.

  110. Here is a man who is against the people,

  111. against the law,

  112. against the temple.

  113. But this is here is a good example for us

  114. of how we identify,

  115. how we witness to people

  116. in that kind of hostile context environment.

  117. Paul definitely kind of

  118. shifts away from their accusations,

  119. and then he keeps the focus on Jesus.

  120. He tells about who Jesus is,

  121. that he is your risen Lord.

  122. And he keeps saying to them,

  123. But Jesus met me.

  124. Jesus said this to me.

  125. Jesus sent me to proclaim him to the Gentiles.

  126. And that's why I'm doing the thing that I'm doing.

  127. And so this is a good passage for us to learn

  128. about how Jesus changes really everything

  129. and how we can bear witness to him faithfully.

  130. The main point of this passage is that God appoints his people

  131. to see the light and hear the voice of the Lord Jesus

  132. so that they might be washed of their sins

  133. and sent out as witnesses.

  134. And we're going to first see how Jesus changed the Jewish religion,

  135. and then we're going to see how Jesus changed Paul

  136. and how he changed us.

  137. If you were with us last week,

  138. you saw that Paul arrived in Jerusalem,

  139. and he was warned that the Jewish believers,

  140. the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem

  141. had been hearing a rumor about Paul,

  142. a slander about him,

  143. that he is against the Jewish law,

  144. that he counsels the Jews to not follow the Jewish law.

  145. And that was a false rumor

  146. because even though Paul did teach

  147. that you no longer need to become a Jew

  148. and observe all the Jewish law

  149. and how to be saved,

  150. but that he had no problem with Jews themselves

  151. following their incestful customs

  152. as long as he had it clear in their mind

  153. that salvation is through Jesus alone,

  154. by faith in Jesus alone.

  155. And so in order to dispel the rumors,

  156. Paul went into the temple

  157. with four Jewish men under his wings

  158. to go through kind of the Nazarite vow

  159. and the men who were under the Nazarite vow

  160. and to go through the ritual purification process

  161. with them for such a reason.

  162. And this was to show them

  163. that he is in fact not against the law.

  164. But before Paul can even complete

  165. the seven days of purification,

  166. he says that some Jews from Asia

  167. spotted Paul inside the temple

  168. and then began to disturb the crowd

  169. and to seize them.

  170. And they say in verse 28,

  171. the man of Israel,

  172. no, this is the man

  173. who is teaching everyone everywhere

  174. against the people

  175. and against the law

  176. and against the surplates.

  177. Moreover, he brought Greeks into the temple

  178. and had defiled his holy place.

  179. So they claim that Paul is against three things,

  180. the Jewish people,

  181. the Mosaic law,

  182. and this place,

  183. which is the breakfast of the temple.

  184. And there is a sliver of truth,

  185. a moniker of truth

  186. in these false accusations

  187. that make them believe them.

  188. So I'm going to address

  189. all three of them in turn.

  190. First,

  191. Paul was never against

  192. the Jewish people.

  193. Paul answers this charge

  194. in chapter 22, verse 3,

  195. when he says,

  196. I am a Jew,

  197. born in Tarsus and Cilicia,

  198. but brought up in this city.

  199. Paul was himself a Jew.

  200. How can he be against his own people?

  201. In fact, in Romans 9, 3,

  202. he says that he could wish

  203. that he himself were cursed

  204. and cut off from Christ

  205. if that meant that his people,

  206. the Jewish people,

  207. could be saved.

  208. Paul loved the Jewish people.

  209. And not only that,

  210. he says he was brought up

  211. in this city,

  212. Jerusalem,

  213. the Jewish capital.

  214. And later,

  215. addresses God

  216. as God of our fathers.

  217. When Ananias addresses God,

  218. he acknowledged that

  219. God,

  220. the fathers of,

  221. the God of the Jews

  222. is also the God of all.

  223. In chapter 22, verse 14.

  224. And even during

  225. his missionary journey,

  226. Paul made it a habit

  227. in each city he visited

  228. to first visit

  229. the Jewish synagogue

  230. and preach to the Jews there.

  231. And then only after

  232. the Jews rejected

  233. his message,

  234. he turned to go

  235. to the Gentiles

  236. in that city

  237. to preach the gospel

  238. to them.

  239. However,

  240. even though Paul

  241. was not against

  242. the Jewish people,

  243. he did teach

  244. that Jews,

  245. like Gentiles,

  246. are sinners

  247. who need to be saved

  248. by Jesus.

  249. He also taught

  250. that Jesus

  251. broke down

  252. the divide and all

  253. the hostility

  254. between Jews

  255. and Gentiles

  256. and made them

  257. one in him.

  258. That's why Paul

  259. writes in Galatians

    Galatians 3:28

  260. chapter 3,

  261. verse 28,

  262. there is neither

  263. Jew nor Greek.

  264. There is neither

  265. slain nor free.

  266. There is no male

  267. and female

  268. for you are all

  269. one in Christ Jesus.

  270. Salvation is

  271. from the Jews

  272. since Jesus,

  273. our Savior,

  274. was Jewish,

  275. he is the Jewish

  276. Messiah.

  277. But salvation

  278. is not only

  279. for the Jews,

  280. it is for all

  281. people who repent

  282. of their sins

  283. and put their

  284. faith in him.

  285. Gentiles can be

  286. saved as Gentiles

  287. without becoming

  288. Jewish.

  289. It's no longer

  290. those who are

  291. descended from

  292. Abraham, Isaac,

  293. and Jacob

  294. who are God's

  295. people,

  296. but those who

  297. are united

  298. with Jesus

  299. like faith.

  300. Only a few of us

  301. have any Jewish

  302. background,

  303. so this is great

  304. news for us

  305. that we too

  306. who are formerly

  307. not God's

  308. people,

  309. who are not

  310. part of the

  311. covenant of God,

  312. we now can be

  313. his people.

  314. And this teaching,

  315. if misrepresented,

  316. can be portrayed

  317. to be against

  318. the Jewish people

  319. and that's what

  320. these Jews

  321. are accusing

  322. of.

  323. You're against

  324. the Jewish people.

  325. Secondly,

  326. Paul is not

  327. also not against

  328. the Mosaic law.

  329. As long as

  330. the Jews understood

  331. that it's not

  332. keeping the Mosaic

  333. law that saved

  334. them,

  335. but Jesus

  336. who by his

  337. life, death,

  338. and resurrection

  339. that saved them,

  340. Paul is fine

  341. with Jews

  342. observing the

  343. Mosaic law

  344. and continuing

  345. the Jewish

  346. customs handed

  347. down to them

  348. by their

  349. poor fathers.

  350. In fact,

  351. Paul's Jewish

  352. upbringing and

  353. training in

  354. Jewish law

  355. were impeccable.

  356. Paul says

  357. later in

  358. chapter 22,

  359. verse 3,

  360. in his defense

  361. that he was

  362. educated at

  363. the feet of

  364. Gamaliel

  365. according to

  366. the strict

  367. manner of the

  368. law of our

  369. fathers,

  370. being zealous

  371. for God

  372. as all of you

  373. are this day.

  374. earlier in

  375. chapter 21,

  376. verse 20,

  377. the elders of

  378. the Jerusalem

  379. church described

  380. the Jewish

  381. believers there

  382. as being

  383. zealous for

  384. the law,

  385. and Paul here

  386. used the same

  387. word to describe

  388. his own

  389. upbringing.

  390. I too was

  391. raised that

  392. way.

  393. I was zealous

  394. for the law.

  395. Gamaliel was

  396. a notable

  397. Jewish rabbi

  398. who served

  399. as the

  400. president of

  401. the Sanhedrin,

  402. the Jewish

  403. ruling council,

  404. and he

  405. was a

  406. grandson,

  407. Gamaliel was

  408. a grandson

  409. of an even

  410. more famous

  411. rabbi named

  412. Hillel,

  413. and Paul

  414. was trained

  415. in the

  416. Jewish law

  417. by Gamaliel.

  418. In other

  419. words,

  420. Paul had

  421. a Jewish

  422. Ivy League

  423. education.

  424. He belonged

  425. to the

  426. strictest

  427. sect of

  428. the Jewish

  429. teaching.

  430. So Paul

  431. was not

  432. against the

  433. Mosaic law,

  434. and he

  435. takes care

  436. to emphasize

  437. that even

  438. Ananias,

  439. the man

  440. who restored

  441. his sight

  442. and told

  443. him about

  444. Jesus,

  445. was a

  446. devout

  447. man

  448. according

  449. to the

  450. law.

  451. However,

  452. even though

  453. Paul wasn't

  454. against the

  455. law,

  456. he did

  457. teach that

  458. Jesus

  459. fulfilled

  460. and

  461. completed

  462. the law.

  463. So he

  464. says in

  465. Romans 10

    Romans 10:4

  466. verse 4,

  467. Christ is

  468. the end.

  469. He's the

  470. end of the

  471. law for

  472. righteousness

  473. for those

  474. who believe.

  475. Paul taught

  476. in Romans

  477. 3,

  478. 21-24,

  479. but now

  480. the righteousness

  481. of God

  482. has been

  483. manifested

  484. apart from

  485. the law,

  486. although the

  487. law and the

  488. prophets bear

  489. witness to

  490. it,

  491. the righteousness

  492. of God

  493. through faith

  494. in Jesus

  495. Christ for

  496. all who

  497. believe.

  498. For there

  499. is no

  500. distinction,

  501. for all

  502. have sinned

  503. and fall

  504. short of

  505. the glory

  506. of God

  507. and are

  508. justified

  509. by his

  510. grace as

  511. a gift

  512. through the

  513. redemption

  514. that is in

  515. Christ Jesus.

  516. That means

  517. that we

  518. can't be

  519. declared

  520. righteous

  521. before God

  522. by observing

  523. the law.

  524. We have

  525. all sinned

  526. and fallen

  527. short of

  528. God's

  529. standards.

  530. By our

  531. own moral

  532. living or

  533. good deeds,

  534. no one

  535. can make

  536. the cut.

  537. No one

  538. can save

  539. themselves.

  540. Our only hope

  541. of having

  542. right standing

  543. with God

  544. is to put

  545. our faith

  546. in Jesus

  547. who died

  548. to make

  549. atonement

  550. for our

  551. sins so

  552. that we

  553. might be

  554. forgiven.

  555. Jesus is

  556. the one

  557. who fulfills

  558. all

  559. righteousness.

  560. So even

  561. though

  562. Mosaic law

  563. more

  564. written to

  565. Jesus,

  566. it pointed

  567. to Jesus

  568. and so

  569. Paul didn't

  570. oppose or

  571. he wasn't

  572. against the

  573. Mosaic law

  574. because Paul

  575. taught that

  576. the law

  577. was fulfilled

  578. by Jesus.

  579. In

  580. observance of the

  581. law,

  582. it's not

  583. what saved

  584. them.

  585. He's being

  586. portrayed by

  587. the Jews

  588. as being

  589. against the

  590. law.

  591. Third,

  592. Paul was also

  593. not against

  594. the temple.

  595. the Jews

  596. had seen

  597. Paul with

  598. Trothimus,

  599. a Gentile

  600. believer

  601. from Ephesus

  602. and he

  603. was with

  604. him in

  605. the city

  606. of Jerusalem

  607. and so

  608. they assumed

  609. wrongly that

  610. Paul had

  611. taken him

  612. into the

  613. temple,

  614. thereby

  615. defiled

  616. the temple

  617. which Paul

  618. in fact

  619. had never

  620. done.

  621. Archaeologists

  622. have discovered

  623. the temple

  624. warning inscription

  625. that used

  626. to hang

  627. right outside

  628. the sanctuary

  629. of the Jewish

  630. temple in

  631. Jerusalem

  632. and it

  633. says this

  634. in Greek

  635. quote,

  636. no stranger

  637. is to

  638. enter

  639. within

  640. the

  641. Belgrade

  642. out

  643. round

  644. the

  645. temple

  646. and

  647. in

  648. closure

  649. whoever

  650. is caught

  651. will be

  652. himself

  653. responsible

  654. for his

  655. ensuing

  656. death.

  657. So that's

  658. how important

  659. to enter

  660. the temple

  661. as a

  662. Gentile

  663. to areas

  664. we are not

  665. supposed to

  666. enter.

  667. But Paul

  668. didn't do

  669. that.

  670. He didn't

  671. take

  672. Trothimus

  673. inside the

  674. temple.

  675. In

  676. fact,

  677. Paul was

  678. just

  679. reading

  680. four Jewish

  681. men

  682. through

  683. their

  684. purification

  685. rites

  686. inside the

  687. temple

  688. to show

  689. that he

  690. actually

  691. observes

  692. these

  693. Jewish

  694. customs.

  695. And later

  696. he mentions

  697. in chapter

  698. 22

  699. verse 17

  700. that even

  701. after his

  702. conversion

  703. he went

  704. to the

  705. temple

  706. to pray

  707. to God

  708. and there

  709. he saw

  710. the vision

  711. of Jesus

  712. telling him

  713. to go

  714. and preach

  715. the gospel

  716. to the

  717. Gentiles.

  718. So Paul

  719. was decidedly

  720. not against

  721. the temple.

  722. However,

  723. Paul knew

  724. that Jesus

  725. taught in

  726. John 2

  727. that his

  728. body is

  729. the ultimate

  730. temple of

  731. God,

  732. the new

  733. temple of

  734. God.

  735. He knew

  736. that Jesus

  737. taught in

  738. John 4

  739. that true

  740. worshippers

  741. would no

  742. longer

  743. worship in

  744. the temple

  745. in Jerusalem

  746. but that

  747. they would

  748. worship God

  749. everywhere

  750. where the

  751. people of

  752. God are

  753. gathered

  754. in spirit

  755. and in

  756. truth.

  757. So following

  758. Jesus'

  759. teaching,

  760. Paul did

  761. teach that

  762. sacrifices in

  763. the temple

  764. are no longer

  765. necessary

  766. because Jesus

  767. has offered

  768. up his

  769. body once

  770. and for

  771. all as

  772. the ultimate

  773. sacrifice

  774. for sin.

  775. This is why

  776. we as

  777. Christians don't

  778. need to

  779. make

  780. pilgrimages

  781. to the

  782. western

  783. wall in

  784. Jerusalem

  785. or make

  786. animal

  787. sacrifices

  788. because Jesus

  789. is the new

  790. temple of

  791. God.

  792. Because Jesus

  793. is the ultimate

  794. sacrifice of

  795. God.

  796. So wherever

  797. the people of

  798. God are

  799. gathered in

  800. his name,

  801. like here,

  802. we can

  803. worship him

  804. truly.

  805. And because

  806. of this

  807. teaching,

  808. even though

  809. Paul was not

  810. against the

  811. temple,

  812. he was

  813. represented as

  814. being against

  815. the temple.

  816. So these

  817. three charges

  818. that the

  819. Jews brought

  820. against Paul

  821. reveal how

  822. the Jews

  823. were grappling

  824. with the

  825. profound changes

  826. that Jesus

  827. brought about

  828. in their

  829. faith.

  830. Jesus changed

  831. the Jewish

  832. religion forever,

  833. not by abolishing

  834. it or opposing

  835. it, but by

  836. fulfilling it.

  837. It's what he

  838. called the

  839. righteous one

  840. in chapter 22

  841. verse 4.

  842. Jesus is the

  843. one who lives

  844. righteously,

  845. who fulfills

  846. all the

  847. righteous

  848. requirements

  849. of the

  850. law.

  851. But many

  852. of the

  853. Jews

  854. misunderstood

  855. Jesus,

  856. and because

  857. of that,

  858. they misunderstood

  859. Paul.

  860. And after

  861. the Jews

  862. from Asia

  863. stirred up

  864. the crowd,

  865. the total

  866. chaos and

  867. confusion

  868. ensued.

  869. There's a lot

  870. of running

  871. around and

  872. a lot of

  873. shouting,

  874. and it says

  875. in chapter

  876. 21,

  877. verses 30

  878. to 31,

  879. the people

  880. seized

  881. Paul and

  882. dragged him

  883. out of the

  884. temple.

  885. And as they

  886. were seeking

  887. to kill him,

  888. word came to

  889. the tribune of

  890. the cohort that

  891. all the

  892. Christian ones

  893. had confused.

  894. They dragged

  895. Paul out of

  896. the inner

  897. part of the

  898. temple because

  899. they were not

  900. allowed to stone

  901. anybody in the

  902. inner part of

  903. the temple because

  904. that would be

  905. fire.

  906. So they had to

  907. take him out

  908. to the outer

  909. part, and

  910. the mob tries

  911. to kill him

  912. there.

  913. This is an

  914. attempt of

  915. winching.

  916. It's not an

  917. official execution

  918. because the

  919. Jewish people did

  920. not have the

  921. right under the

  922. Roman Empire to

  923. meet out

  924. capital

  925. punishment.

  926. So this is

  927. they're just

  928. going against

  929. the law and

  930. they're trying

  931. to kill

  932. Paul out of

  933. their zeal

  934. for the

  935. law.

  936. And when the

  937. Roman Tribune

  938. intervenes, he

  939. asks the

  940. crowd what

  941. Paul had

  942. done, who

  943. he is, what

  944. he had done.

  945. But he says

  946. that in verse

  947. 34, some in

  948. the crowd were

  949. shouting one

  950. thing, some

  951. another, and

  952. as he could

  953. not learn the

  954. facts because

  955. of the

  956. uproar, he

  957. ordered him to

  958. be brought

  959. into the

  960. palace.

  961. And as

  962. they're escorting

  963. Paul to the

  964. barracks, he

  965. says that he

  966. had to be

  967. carried by the

  968. soldiers because

  969. of the violence

  970. of the

  971. process.

  972. It's quite a

  973. volatile situation.

  974. Paul could

  975. bear or be

  976. killed.

  977. And given

  978. such a violent

  979. reaction from

  980. the crowd, the

  981. Roman Tribune

  982. assumes that

  983. Paul is some

  984. kind of violent,

  985. dangerous revolutionary

  986. and he asks

  987. Paul in verse

  988. 38, are you

  989. not the Egyptian

  990. men who recently

  991. stirred up a

  992. revolt and led

  993. the 4,000 men

  994. of the assassin

  995. down into the

  996. wilderness?

  997. So this, the

  998. existence of

  999. this Egyptian

  1000. pretender, the

  1001. false Egyptian

  1002. Messiah is

  1003. recorded also

  1004. independently by a

  1005. Jewish Roman

  1006. historian named

  1007. Persephone from

  1008. the first century.

  1009. And he records

  1010. that this man from

  1011. Egypt who was a

  1012. Jew claimed to

  1013. be the Messiah.

  1014. He deceived

  1015. thousands of

  1016. Jews and led

  1017. the knowledge of

  1018. wilderness and

  1019. then to the

  1020. Mount of Olives.

  1021. Jerusalem to

  1022. take over,

  1023. reclaim Jerusalem

  1024. from the Romans.

  1025. But then the

  1026. Romans promptly

  1027. crushed him,

  1028. captured 200

  1029. of his followers,

  1030. killed 400 of

  1031. his followers,

  1032. and that was

  1033. the end of

  1034. that.

  1035. But this man,

  1036. the pretender

  1037. himself, did

  1038. escape the

  1039. Roman grip.

  1040. And so this

  1041. tribune thinks

  1042. that he's found,

  1043. he's caught this

  1044. man that had

  1045. escaped.

  1046. He thinks he

  1047. has a great

  1048. fine in his

  1049. hand and he's

  1050. going to get

  1051. some kind of

  1052. reward for

  1053. taking him

  1054. in.

  1055. But Paul speaks

  1056. to him in

  1057. Greek which

  1058. shows that he's

  1059. not an Egyptian

  1060. and shows that

  1061. Tobin was very

  1062. confused.

  1063. Paul was not

  1064. a political

  1065. revolutionary

  1066. but he was

  1067. turning the world

  1068. upside down

  1069. simply by

  1070. teaching the

  1071. good news of

  1072. Jesus Christ.

  1073. And in this

  1074. volatile situation,

  1075. even while

  1076. narrowly escaping

  1077. his own

  1078. death from

  1079. the mentioned

  1080. mob, Paul

  1081. asked the

  1082. tribune for

  1083. the permission

  1084. to address

  1085. the Jewish

  1086. people so

  1087. that he might

  1088. bear witness to

  1089. Jesus and

  1090. tell them about

  1091. how he changed

  1092. his life.

  1093. That brings me to

  1094. my second point

  1095. beginning in

  1096. chapter 22,

  1097. how Jesus

  1098. changed Paul

  1099. and how he

  1100. changed us.

  1101. The Roman

  1102. tribune,

  1103. hoping that Paul

  1104. will clarify what

  1105. is going on,

  1106. gives him

  1107. permission to

  1108. speak and

  1109. Paul addresses

  1110. his own

  1111. people in

  1112. the Hebrew

  1113. language,

  1114. the Hebrew

  1115. dialect,

  1116. likely,

  1117. the most

  1118. likely

  1119. Aramae,

  1120. which was

  1121. the Jews

  1122. at the time

  1123. spoke.

  1124. And as

  1125. people hear

  1126. him speaking

  1127. in their own

  1128. language,

  1129. they quiet down

  1130. and they start

  1131. to listen.

  1132. And this is

  1133. what he tells

  1134. them in

  1135. verse 45,

  1136. he tells

  1137. them that he

  1138. was formally

  1139. persecuted,

  1140. he formally

  1141. persecuted this

  1142. way to the

  1143. dead,

  1144. binding and

  1145. delivering to

  1146. prison both

  1147. men and

  1148. women.

  1149. Paul is

  1150. trying to

  1151. convince the

  1152. Jews that

  1153. he's not

  1154. some Romanized

  1155. Jew who

  1156. is foreign

  1157. and who is

  1158. against and

  1159. doesn't care

  1160. anything about

  1161. Israel and

  1162. about the

  1163. law and the

  1164. temple,

  1165. but he was

  1166. once a

  1167. zealous

  1168. proponent of

  1169. the law,

  1170. was trained

  1171. in the law,

  1172. and he was

  1173. a fierce

  1174. opponent of

  1175. Christians.

  1176. And just

  1177. as the

  1178. Jews are

  1179. now trying

  1180. to kill

  1181. Paul,

  1182. Paul once

  1183. tried to

  1184. kill Christians

  1185. as well.

  1186. In fact,

  1187. Paul mentions

  1188. in verse 20

  1189. that when the

  1190. blood of

  1191. Stephen was

  1192. being shed,

  1193. he himself

  1194. was standing

  1195. by and approving

  1196. and watching

  1197. over the

  1198. garments of

  1199. those who

  1200. killed him.

  1201. Stephen was

  1202. the first

  1203. Christian

  1204. martyr,

  1205. and we saw

  1206. him get

  1207. stoned to

  1208. death by

  1209. Jewish mob

  1210. in Acts

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  1211. chapter 7.

  1212. And when

  1213. Stephen was

  1214. being stoned,

  1215. it was Paul

  1216. who was

  1217. providing the

  1218. cold check

  1219. service to

  1220. people who

  1221. were throwing

  1222. the stone

  1223. at Stephen.

  1224. And interestingly

  1225. enough,

  1226. and ironically,

  1227. what the

  1228. Jews charged

  1229. Stephen of

  1230. in Acts

  1231. 6.13

  1232. is exactly

  1233. what the

  1234. Jews charged

  1235. Paul of

  1236. here.

  1237. He is

  1238. against

  1239. this

  1240. holy place

  1241. and the

  1242. law.

  1243. This shows

  1244. just how

  1245. thoroughly

  1246. Paul has

  1247. been transformed

  1248. by the

  1249. grace of

  1250. God.

  1251. The man

  1252. who used

  1253. to persecute

  1254. the followers

  1255. of Jesus

  1256. is now

  1257. being persecuted

  1258. for following

  1259. Jesus.

  1260. I hope

  1261. this is a

  1262. comfort to

  1263. some of

  1264. you.

  1265. It's

  1266. possible

  1267. that some

  1268. of you

  1269. have strayed

  1270. far away

  1271. from God.

  1272. Maybe

  1273. you have

  1274. doubted

  1275. that you

  1276. can ever

  1277. become a

  1278. follower of

  1279. God.

  1280. With all

  1281. that I

  1282. have done,

  1283. I could

  1284. never be

  1285. a follower

  1286. of Jesus.

  1287. Perhaps

  1288. you have

  1289. even mocked

  1290. Christians

  1291. have

  1292. slandered

  1293. the

  1294. church

  1295. in the

  1296. past.

  1297. But if

  1298. Paul can

  1299. be saved,

  1300. you can

  1301. still be

  1302. saved.

  1303. By his

  1304. own admission

  1305. in 1 Timothy

  1306. 1.13,

  1307. Paul was

  1308. formerly a

  1309. blasphemer,

  1310. persecutor,

  1311. and insolent

  1312. opponent of

  1313. the church.

  1314. And yet

  1315. now he

  1316. was the

  1317. apostle.

  1318. He was an

  1319. apostle of

  1320. the church.

  1321. No matter

  1322. where you

  1323. have been,

  1324. and what

  1325. you have

  1326. done,

  1327. you are

  1328. not too

  1329. far gone.

  1330. And this

  1331. passage teaches

  1332. us that

  1333. there is still

  1334. time to

  1335. repent and

  1336. believe in

  1337. Jesus.

  1338. In

  1339. verses 6-16,

  1340. Paul recounts

  1341. how Jesus

  1342. graciously

  1343. appeared in

  1344. him.

  1345. He says,

  1346. as I was

  1347. on my way

  1348. and drew

  1349. near to

  1350. Damascus,

  1351. about noon,

  1352. a great

  1353. light from

  1354. heaven suddenly

  1355. shone around

  1356. me.

  1357. And I

  1358. fell to the

  1359. ground and

  1360. heard a

  1361. voice say

  1362. to me,

  1363. Saul,

  1364. Saul,

  1365. why are you

  1366. persecuting me?

  1367. And I

  1368. answered,

  1369. who are you?

  1370. And he

  1371. said to me,

  1372. I am Jesus

  1373. of Nazareth,

  1374. whom you are

  1375. persecuting.

  1376. Now those

  1377. who were with

  1378. me saw the

  1379. light, but

  1380. did not

  1381. understand the

  1382. voice of the

  1383. one who was

  1384. speaking.

  1385. This is the

  1386. second time

  1387. that Luke is

  1388. now telling us

  1389. the story of

  1390. Paul's conversion.

  1391. In the first

  1392. account that

  1393. Luke gave us

  1394. in chapter 9,

  1395. verse 7,

  1396. he noted that

  1397. the men who

  1398. were traveling

  1399. with Paul

  1400. stood speechless.

  1401. They were

  1402. hearing the

  1403. voice but

  1404. seeing no

  1405. one, which

  1406. seems to

  1407. contradict verse

  1408. 9, which

  1409. says here that

  1410. the man saw

  1411. the light, but

  1412. did not

  1413. understand the

  1414. voice of the

  1415. one who was

  1416. speaking to.

  1417. But this is

  1418. not a

  1419. contradiction.

  1420. Chapter 9

  1421. tells Paul's

  1422. conversion story

  1423. from the

  1424. perspective of

  1425. Luke as

  1426. a missionary.

  1427. And chapter

  1428. 22 tells the

  1429. story from

  1430. Paul's

  1431. perspective as

  1432. it unfolded.

  1433. And both

  1434. accounts are

  1435. actually highlighting

  1436. the fact that

  1437. the revelation

  1438. of Jesus Christ

  1439. to Paul was

  1440. personal and

  1441. private and was

  1442. reserved for

  1443. him alone.

  1444. Paul's

  1445. companions saw

  1446. the heavenly

  1447. light, but

  1448. they did not

  1449. see the

  1450. person of

  1451. Jesus.

  1452. Paul's

  1453. companions also

  1454. heard a

  1455. sound, but

  1456. they did not

  1457. hear the

  1458. voice of

  1459. Jesus.

  1460. They could

  1461. not understand

  1462. him.

  1463. They didn't

  1464. recognize him.

  1465. Only Paul

  1466. understood what

  1467. he saw and

  1468. what he heard.

  1469. heard.

  1470. So while this

  1471. encounter with

  1472. Jesus was very

  1473. public, and

  1474. the witnesses

  1475. can't corroborate

  1476. what happened,

  1477. the meeting with

  1478. Jesus was very

  1479. personal and

  1480. private.

  1481. I think that's

  1482. the wonderful

  1483. truth, that

  1484. God who created

  1485. the hospitals by

  1486. the word of his

  1487. mouth is not

  1488. too preoccupied,

  1489. not too

  1490. important to

  1491. attend individually

  1492. to us and

  1493. speak to us and

  1494. save us.

  1495. This was the

  1496. case where each

  1497. of us came to

  1498. know and

  1499. believe in Jesus

  1500. for the first

  1501. time.

  1502. You may have

  1503. heard a sermon

  1504. delivered to a

  1505. room full of

  1506. people.

  1507. You may have

  1508. been reading a

  1509. book that was

  1510. written for

  1511. thousands of

  1512. people.

  1513. But in that

  1514. moment, when you

  1515. encountered Jesus,

  1516. Jesus spoke

  1517. personally to

  1518. you, and you

  1519. came to see

  1520. him and behold

  1521. him in his

  1522. room.

  1523. This is because

  1524. only those whom

  1525. God has appointed

  1526. for salvation

  1527. can be saved.

  1528. Jesus says to

  1529. Paul in verse

  1530. 10, rise and

  1531. go into the

  1532. masochist, and

  1533. there you will

  1534. be told all

  1535. that is appointed

  1536. for you to

  1537. do.

  1538. Here the word

  1539. appointed refers

  1540. to Paul's divine

  1541. assignment.

  1542. Paul used to

  1543. take letters

  1544. from the

  1545. Jewish ruling

  1546. council, authorizing

  1547. him to persecute

  1548. Christians and

  1549. to imprison

  1550. them.

  1551. But now he

  1552. is following

  1553. orders from

  1554. another place.

  1555. He takes

  1556. orders on the

  1557. Lord Jesus.

  1558. He does what

  1559. he's appointed

  1560. to by him.

  1561. Instead of

  1562. prosecuting those

  1563. who believe in

  1564. Jesus, now

  1565. Paul proclaims

  1566. Jesus and

  1567. calls people to

  1568. believe in him.

  1569. And then when

  1570. Paul obeys

  1571. Jesus' voice

  1572. he goes to

  1573. Ananias.

  1574. And then

  1575. Ananias helps

  1576. him to see,

  1577. or lies again

  1578. to see, and

  1579. then talking

  1580. about Jesus.

  1581. He says in

  1582. verses 14 to

  1583. 15, Ananias

  1584. says to Paul,

  1585. the God of our

  1586. fathers appointed

  1587. you to know

  1588. his will, to

  1589. see the

  1590. righteous one, and

  1591. to hear a voice

  1592. from his mouth,

  1593. for you will be

  1594. a witness for

  1595. him to everyone

  1596. of what you

  1597. have seen and

  1598. heard.

  1599. it's because

  1600. God had

  1601. appointed Paul

  1602. to know his

  1603. will, it's

  1604. because God

  1605. had appointed

  1606. Paul to see

  1607. Jesus, the

  1608. righteous one, and

  1609. to hear his

  1610. voice, that Paul

  1611. was able to

  1612. recognize Jesus

  1613. and hear him

  1614. and understand

  1615. what he was

  1616. saying.

  1617. Paul's blindness

  1618. immediately after

  1619. he became

  1620. kind of a

  1621. Jesus is a

  1622. metaphor for a

  1623. spiritual

  1624. blindness.

  1625. Paul could

  1626. not see the

  1627. truth.

  1628. Paul was blind

  1629. to spiritual

  1630. realities, and

  1631. it is on the

  1632. day of his

  1633. conversion that

  1634. he is able to

  1635. see again, we

  1636. see in fact

  1637. his sight.

  1638. Every single

  1639. one of us is

  1640. also spiritually

  1641. blind apart from

  1642. God's special

  1643. revelation to

  1644. Jesus.

  1645. Unless God

  1646. shows us Jesus,

  1647. we cannot see

  1648. him.

  1649. We cannot

  1650. understand the

  1651. spiritual reality.

  1652. But when God

  1653. appoints us to

  1654. know his will,

  1655. he enables us

  1656. to see his

  1657. face here in

  1658. voice.

  1659. Paul writes

  1660. about this in

  1661. 2 Corinthians 4,

  1662. 3, 6,

  1663. he says,

  1664. even if our

  1665. gospel is

  1666. veiled, it

  1667. is veiled to

  1668. those who are

  1669. perishing.

  1670. In their

  1671. case, the

  1672. God of this

  1673. world has

  1674. blinded the

  1675. minds of

  1676. the unbelievers

  1677. to keep

  1678. them from

  1679. seeing the

  1680. light of the

  1681. gospel of the

  1682. glory of

  1683. Christ, who

  1684. is the

  1685. image of

  1686. God.

  1687. For what

  1688. we proclaim

  1689. is not

  1690. ourselves, but

  1691. Jesus Christ

  1692. as Lord,

  1693. with ourselves

  1694. as his

  1695. servants for

  1696. Jesus' sake.

  1697. For God, who

  1698. said, let

  1699. light shine

  1700. out of

  1701. darkness, has

  1702. shown in

  1703. our hearts to

  1704. give the

  1705. light of the

  1706. knowledge of

  1707. the glory of

  1708. God in the

  1709. faith of

  1710. Jesus Christ.

  1711. Do you hear

  1712. the voice of

  1713. Jesus calling

  1714. on people?

  1715. Do you see

  1716. the light of

  1717. Jesus shining

  1718. into your own

  1719. heart?

  1720. God?

  1721. If yes, then

  1722. the only

  1723. appropriate

  1724. response is

  1725. found in

  1726. Ananias

  1727. invitation to

  1728. Paul in

  1729. verse 16.

  1730. And now,

  1731. why do you

  1732. wait?

  1733. Rise and

  1734. be baptized

  1735. and wash

  1736. away your

  1737. sins, calling

  1738. on you.

  1739. The Greek

  1740. word for

  1741. baptized literally

  1742. means to

  1743. reverse.

  1744. For Jews,

  1745. immersion in

  1746. water for

  1747. the purpose

  1748. of purification

  1749. from ritual

  1750. and purity

  1751. was a

  1752. habitual

  1753. thing.

  1754. They did

  1755. it often.

  1756. They had

  1757. public pools

  1758. dedicated

  1759. solely for

  1760. that purpose.

  1761. But for

  1762. Christians,

  1763. baptism is

  1764. a one-time

  1765. initial

  1766. sacrament.

  1767. Because we

  1768. only need to

  1769. be committed

  1770. to the

  1771. ones of

  1772. our sins

  1773. once and

  1774. for all

  1775. by the

  1776. blood of

  1777. Jesus.

  1778. For those

  1779. who have

  1780. repented and

  1781. come to

  1782. faith in

  1783. Jesus Christ,

  1784. baptism

  1785. signifies the

  1786. washing away

  1787. of guilt

  1788. and the

  1789. purifying of

  1790. our own

  1791. conscience.

  1792. If you're

  1793. baptized,

  1794. you can be

  1795. assured that

  1796. you have

  1797. indeed been

  1798. cleansed of

  1799. your sins

  1800. by the

  1801. blood of

  1802. Jesus.

  1803. You have

  1804. indeed been

  1805. pure

  1806. conscience

  1807. before that.

  1808. Christian

  1809. baptism also

  1810. represents the

  1811. believer's

  1812. union with

  1813. Jesus through

  1814. faith,

  1815. through his

  1816. witness,

  1817. death,

  1818. and resurrection.

  1819. being

  1820. submerged under

  1821. the water

  1822. signifies the

  1823. Christian's

  1824. death,

  1825. death to

  1826. self.

  1827. We are no

  1828. longer living

  1829. for ourselves,

  1830. I have

  1831. died to

  1832. myself,

  1833. I no

  1834. longer live

  1835. to promote

  1836. myself,

  1837. but I now

  1838. live to

  1839. proclaim

  1840. Christ.

  1841. That's what

  1842. that death

  1843. signifies,

  1844. we are

  1845. submerged under

  1846. the water.

  1847. And then

  1848. when the

  1849. believer

  1850. emerges out

  1851. of the

  1852. water,

  1853. that signifies

  1854. you like

  1855. in Christ.

  1856. Christian now

  1857. lives for

  1858. Jesus.

  1859. That's what

  1860. all of us

  1861. who follow

  1862. Jesus now

  1863. have done,

  1864. baptized

  1865. to follow

  1866. Jesus.

  1867. And this

  1868. morning we

  1869. have the

  1870. privilege of

  1871. baptizing

  1872. two new

  1873. followers of

  1874. Jesus.
