  1. We are in the book of Exodus for the first time today, so please turn your Bibles to

  2. the book of Exodus, the second book in the Old Testament, right after Genesis and right

  3. before Leviticus.

  4. And let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  5. Heavenly Father, we tremble before your Word.

  6. For your Word is truth.

  7. For your Word is power of God for salvation.

  8. Because your Word is living and active.

  9. Because your Word is breathed out from your own mouth.

  10. And Lord, we want to hear you address us.

  11. Lord, we look forward to, we eagerly anticipate what you have in store for us in this book.

  12. So Lord, do the work that only you can do.

  13. Exalt the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, in our hearts.

  14. Fill us with your Holy Spirit.

  15. Help us to live in our identity as servants of God.

  16. In Jesus' name we pray.

  17. Amen.

  18. Exodus chapter 1.

    Exodus 1 chapter mention

  19. I'm going to read the whole chapter.

  20. Verses 1 to 22.

  21. It says,

  22. These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob.

  23. Each with his household.

  24. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah.

  25. Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin.

  26. Dan, and Naphtali.

  27. Gad, and Asher.

  28. All the descendants of Jacob were 70 persons.

  29. Joseph was already in Egypt.

  30. Then Joseph died.

  31. And all his brothers.

  32. And all that generation.

  33. But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly.

  34. They multiplied and grew exceedingly strong so that the land was filled with them.

  35. Now there arose a new king over Egypt who did not know Joseph.

  36. And he said to his people,

  37. Behold, the peoples of Israel are too many and too mighty for us.

  38. Come, let us deal surely with them lest they multiply.

  39. And if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.

  40. Therefore, they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens.

  41. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Ramses.

  42. And the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied, and the more they spread abroad.

  43. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel.

  44. So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves and made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and brick.

  45. And in all kinds of work in the field.

  46. In all their work, they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.

  47. Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah,

  48. When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew woman and see them on the birthstool,

  49. if it is a son, you shall kill him.

  50. But if it is a daughter, she shall live.

  51. But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them.

  52. But let the male children live.

  53. So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them,

  54. Why have you done this?

  55. And let the male children live.

  56. The midwives said to Pharaoh,

  57. Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women,

  58. for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.

  59. So God dealt well with the midwives,

  60. and the people multiplied and grew very strong.

  61. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.

  62. Then Pharaoh commanded all his people,

  63. Every son that is born to the Hebrews,

  64. you shall cast into the Nile,

  65. but you shall let every daughter live.

  66. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  67. Just some introductory stuff since we're in the new book.

  68. Exodus is a loan word from the Greek word that means going out,

  69. or leaving, or departure.

  70. It comes from the Greek translation of Exodus 19, verse 1,

    Exodus 19:1

  71. which says,

  72. On the third new moon,

  73. after the people of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt,

  74. on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

  75. So it refers to Israel's deliverance from Egypt,

  76. which was, in the Old Testament,

  77. the single greatest act of salvation that God had worked.

  78. But the original Hebrew title for the book is actually not Exodus.

  79. It's,

  80. And These Are the Names.

  81. It's not a creative title,

  82. because it's the first words of the book.

  83. The first words of the book are,

  84. And these are the names of the sons of Israel

  85. who came to Egypt with Jacob,

  86. each with his household.

  87. So in the original, it begins with the conjunction,

  88. And,

  89. And These Are the Names,

  90. to show that it's a sequel to the book of Genesis.

  91. It's continuing the story that we have seen in the book of Genesis.

  92. And we were in the book of Genesis not that long ago,

  93. though I guess maybe it's been a couple years now.

  94. And that's why Exodus assumes a number of details

  95. that we can only learn from the book of Genesis.

  96. For example,

  97. Who are the sons of Israel?

  98. Why is Israel also called Jacob?

  99. How did they end up in Egypt?

  100. And where did they come from?

  101. Who is this person named Joseph?

  102. In verses 6 to 8.

  103. And why is it significant that a new king arose over Egypt

  104. who did not know Joseph?

  105. So all that to say,

  106. Exodus is continuing the story of the sons of Israel

  107. that began in Genesis.

  108. And if you were with us through that sermon series in Genesis,

  109. you might recall that settling in a land

  110. that is not the promised land of Canaan

  111. is frowned upon all throughout the book of Genesis.

  112. It's always the people who are outside of the covenant promises of God

  113. that settle in places outside of Canaan.

  114. So throughout the book,

  115. God's chosen line of people,

  116. there are always sojourners in Canaan,

  117. the promised land,

  118. while those who are outside of that chosen line

  119. settle in various other places.

  120. So for example,

  121. Cain settles in the land of Nod.

  122. The inhabitants of Babel settled in Shinar.

  123. Genesis 13.12 tells us that

  124. while Abram settled in the land of Canaan,

  125. Lot settled in Sodom.

  126. And we know what happens to Sodom.

  127. It's destroyed.

  128. Later, Ishmael settles in the wilderness of Paran.

  129. And then in Genesis 36,

  130. it says that while Jacob remained in the land

  131. of his father's sojourning in the land of Canaan,

  132. Esau settled in the hill country of Seir.

  133. Why am I mentioning this?

  134. Because the only time in the book of Genesis

  135. when the people of God is said to have settled in a land

  136. other than the land of Canaan,

  137. the promised land,

  138. and it is okay,

  139. it is the book of Genesis.

  140. Sorry, it's in Egypt.

  141. And that's because it's a temporary arrangement.

  142. Given in chapter,

  143. it says in 47.27 that Israel settled in the land of Egypt.

  144. And that's because God had already predicted this,

  145. said that it would happen in Genesis 15.

  146. 13 to 14.

  147. He told Abram that his descendants will be sojourners

  148. in a land that is not theirs,

  149. and that they will be servants there,

  150. and that they will be afflicted for 400 years.

  151. But then God promised that he will bring judgment upon that nation

  152. that they serve,

  153. and afterward that they would come out with great possessions.

  154. And so Joseph at the end of his life,

  155. at the very last paragraph,

  156. Genesis in chapter 50,

  157. he reminds his brothers of this promise of God

  158. and tells them,

  159. hey, when you are delivered from here,

  160. take my bones up with you from Egypt.

  161. So then Exodus is the fulfillment of that prophecy and promise from Genesis.

  162. And Exodus, like Genesis, is written by Moses.

  163. Throughout the New Testament,

  164. the first five books of the Old Testament,

  165. called collectively the Pentateuch,

  166. are mentioned frequently,

  167. and they're attributed to Moses.

  168. In Mark 12, 26 to 27,

  169. when Jesus answers the Sadducees

  170. who denied the reality of the resurrection of the dead,

  171. he said to them,

  172. as for the dead being raised,

  173. have you not read in the book of Moses,

  174. in the passage about the bush,

  175. how God spoke to him,

  176. saying, I am the God of Abraham,

  177. and the God of Isaac,

  178. and the God of Jacob?

  179. He is not God of the dead,

  180. but of the living.

  181. So he is there citing Exodus 3,

  182. and he calls it a book of Moses.

  183. And four times throughout the book of Exodus,

  184. it self-notes,

  185. that the book itself notes

  186. that Moses was writing down what God was doing

  187. and what was happening throughout the book of Exodus.

  188. And so Moses is the author,

  189. the principal author,

  190. though I'm sure there have been other editors of the book.

  191. The dating is also clearly indicated by Scripture,

  192. when it was written,

  193. and at what time period the events in Exodus take place.

  194. So 1 Kings 6.1 gives us a very specific date.

  195. In the 480th year,

  196. after the people of Israel came out of the land of Egypt,

  197. in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel,

  198. in the month of Ziv,

  199. which is the second month,

  200. he began to build a house of the Lord.

  201. So according to that clue,

  202. the Exodus from Egypt was 480 years

  203. before Solomon's fourth year of reign over Israel,

  204. and we know that was 967 B.C.

  205. And so that puts the date of Exodus right around 1447 B.C.

  206. That's the time period when this was taking place.

  207. Now the book can be outlined in three parts.

  208. First chapters 1 to 18 speak of the salvation of the Lord.

  209. It's the retelling of the Exodus.

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  210. Chapters 19 to 24 tell us about the law of the Lord.

  211. And then chapters 25 to 40 tell us about the presence of the Lord

  212. when the Israelites are instructed to build a tabernacle,

  213. the tent where God will come to dwell with them, among them.

  214. And so it's a story of how God delivers the Israelites

  215. and gives them the law to govern them,

  216. and then he dwells with them,

  217. with his presence in the tabernacle.

  218. And that basic outline of Exodus is taken up in the New Testament,

  219. fulfilled ultimately in Jesus and in the people of God,

  220. because Jesus accomplishes God's salvation through his life

  221. and through his death as the Passover lamb

  222. and through his resurrection.

  223. And then after his ascension,

  224. he sends the Spirit of God to set his people apart as holy,

  225. and then he writes the law of God upon the people's hearts.

  226. So there's the salvation and there's the law,

  227. and then finally when Jesus returns to judge the world,

  228. there will be a new heaven and a new earth,

  229. and he will dwell forever with us.

  230. God's dwelling place will be with man.

  231. That's the presence of the Lord.

  232. And so that outline captures the main theme of the book of Exodus,

  233. namely that the Lord is present with his people as their Savior and King.

  234. That's what we're going to see over and over again throughout the book.

  235. And with that emphasis on the presence of God,

  236. we're seeing a partial and initial reversal of what happened at the fall,

  237. because God's people, Adam and Eve,

  238. were exiled from the Garden of Eden,

  239. removed from the presence of God,

  240. and now in Exodus they're starting to make their way back,

  241. though it's not fully there until Christ comes

  242. and then until Christ returns.

  243. And in this particular chapter,

  244. the first chapter that we fear God and not man,

  245. trusting that God's sovereign purposes will always prevail.

  246. So that was the outline of the book before,

  247. and then this is the outline of this chapter.

  248. And we're going to first look at the spread of Israel

  249. and the dread of Israel that falls upon Egyptians,

  250. and then finally the fear of the Lord.

  251. Let's first look at the spread of Israel in verses 1 to 7.

  252. Verse 1 says,

  253. And these are the names of the sons of Israel

  254. who came to Egypt with Jacob,

  255. each with his household.

  256. Then verses 2 to 5 list the 12 sons of Jacob

  257. with the accession of Joseph who was already in Egypt,

  258. and then they tell us that all the descendants of Jacob

  259. were 70 persons.

  260. But there's something interesting going on here

  261. because the phrase,

  262. all the descendants of Jacob,

  263. is literally all the persons coming out of Jacob's hip.

  264. That's a very interesting way to refer to someone's descendants.

  265. And that's intentional.

  266. Because if you recall from Genesis 32,

  267. while Jacob is wrestling with God,

  268. asking for his blessing,

  269. God in order to make Jacob stop,

  270. what does he do?

  271. He touches Jacob's hip,

  272. puts it out of joint.

  273. It's so that Jacob can't continue.

  274. But Jacob persists and asks God continually to bless him.

  275. And then that's when God gives Jacob a new name.

  276. And he says to him,

  277. your name shall no longer be called Jacob,

  278. but Israel,

  279. for you have striven with God and with men

  280. and have prevailed.

  281. It is then that Jacob receives that new name

  282. and becomes the father of the nation of Israel.

  283. It's now the people of God are finally becoming,

  284. kind of coming together

  285. and having its own identity as a people

  286. and as a nation.

  287. So Moses is alluding to that incident

  288. when he says that all the persons

  289. coming out of Jacob's hip were 70 persons.

  290. And that's why he also,

  291. in verse one,

  292. calls the sons of Jacob,

  293. the sons of Israel,

  294. to remind us of that promise that God had made.

  295. And that promise is now being fulfilled.

  296. 70 is not that many people,

  297. but it is a number that represents perfection in scripture.

  298. And here comes the nation of Israel.

  299. Now we get to watch them grow.

  300. Even though,

  301. as verse six tells us,

  302. Joseph died and all that generation with him,

  303. verse seven assures us,

  304. but the people of Israel were fruitful

  305. and increased greatly.

  306. They multiplied and grew exceedingly strong

  307. so that the land was filled with them.

  308. Look at how many words Moses uses

  309. to tell us of Israel's population explosion.

  310. They were fruitful,

  311. increased greatly,

  312. multiplied,

  313. grew exceedingly strong

  314. and the land was filled.

  315. With them.

  316. And that's no exaggeration.

  317. According to Numbers chapter one,

  318. verse 46,

  319. around the time of the Exodus,

  320. shortly afterward in the wilderness,

  321. there were 603,550 men

  322. over the age of 20.

  323. So that means the total population,

  324. you count the woman and the children,

  325. is likely in the millions,

  326. counting them all.

  327. And so from 70 to millions.

  328. And there's something else

  329. that Moses is telling us here also,

  330. besides the fact that the nation of Israel

  331. grew very numerous.

  332. Do these words ring a bell,

  333. kind of remind you of any verses from scripture?

  334. Fruitful,

  335. increased,

  336. greatly,

  337. multiply,

  338. filled.

  339. They're echoing God's creation mandate

  340. to Adam and Eve

  341. in Genesis 128

  342. and his mandate to Noah

  343. after the flood

  344. in Genesis 9,

  345. 1-2.

  346. Be fruitful

  347. and multiply

  348. and fill the earth

  349. and subdue it.

  350. So then,

  351. the chosen people of God

  352. are fulfilling God's command to humanity

  353. what the rest of the world

  354. was not fulfilling.

  355. God's initial blessing to humanity

  356. is now continuing

  357. through the nation of Israel.

  358. So this is also a fulfillment

  359. of a promise.

  360. It's also a fulfillment

  361. of the specific promises

  362. that God had given to the patriarchs,

  363. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

  364. because he said to them

  365. numerous times

  366. throughout the book of Genesis

  367. that I will bless you

  368. and make you a nation

  369. and your offspring

  370. will be as numerous

  371. as the stars of the heavens,

  372. as the dust of the earth,

  373. and as the sand of the seashore.

  374. And that's now being fulfilled.

  375. That's all great,

  376. but here comes

  377. the conflict of the story.

  378. Verse 8 says,

  379. Now there arose

  380. a new king over Egypt

  381. who did not know Joseph.

  382. The word know in Hebrew

  383. has a range of meaning.

  384. It could refer merely

  385. to kind of surface knowledge

  386. about a person,

  387. but it can also refer

  388. to intimate relational knowledge

  389. of a person.

  390. So this doesn't necessarily mean

  391. that this Pharaoh

  392. knew nothing of Joseph,

  393. though it can mean that.

  394. But even if Pharaoh

  395. knew something of Joseph,

  396. he didn't care about him.

  397. In the same way,

  398. people might say to someone,

  399. Who are you?

  400. Not because the identity

  401. of that person is unknown,

  402. but as a way of dismissing them

  403. or ignoring them.

  404. So this new king over Egypt

  405. did not know Joseph.

  406. The way that Joseph,

  407. as a powerful ruler,

  408. second only to Pharaoh,

  409. had delivered Egypt

  410. and its surrounding nations

  411. from the seven years

  412. of severe famine

  413. with the guidance of God

  414. and wise stewardship,

  415. that memory is now distant.

  416. This king feels no obligation

  417. whatsoever to Joseph

  418. and his progeny,

  419. his people,

  420. the Israelites.

  421. So this prepares the way

  422. for verses 9 to 10.

  423. And he said to his people,

  424. Behold,

  425. the people of Israel

  426. are too many

  427. and too mighty for us.

  428. Come,

  429. let us deal shrewdly with them

  430. lest they multiply,

  431. and if war breaks out,

  432. they join our enemies

  433. and fight against us

  434. and escape from the land.

  435. Notice how Pharaoh

  436. shrewdly uses this

  437. us versus them mentality,

  438. that contrast.

  439. He says to his people

  440. that those people,

  441. the people of Israel,

  442. are too many

  443. and too mighty for us.

  444. The descendants of Jacob,

  445. think about this,

  446. the descendants of Jacob

  447. have been living in Egypt

  448. for almost 400 years.

  449. It's longer than our country

  450. has been around.

  451. And still,

  452. the king of Egypt

  453. does not consider

  454. the Israelites his people.

  455. Instead,

  456. he sees them

  457. as a security risk,

  458. a potential threat

  459. to his rule,

  460. so he stirs up xenophobia

  461. among his own people.

  462. He stokes their fear

  463. of losing power,

  464. and then he turns them

  465. against the people of God.

  466. This is a common tactic

  467. used by rulers

  468. to this day.

  469. Look at how numerous

  470. they have become.

  471. Look at how powerful

  472. they have become.

  473. They are not one of us.

  474. We must contain them.

  475. We must control them.

  476. We must send them

  477. to concentration camps

  478. to re-educate them.

  479. That's how the Holocaust

  480. was justified.

  481. Six million Jews

  482. killed in Nazi Germany

  483. throughout Europe.

  484. That's how the Armenian

  485. genocide was justified,

  486. where 1.2 million

  487. Armenians,

  488. many of them Christians,

  489. were killed

  490. in the Ottoman Empire.

  491. That's how the Rwandan

  492. genocide was justified,

  493. where 800,000 Tutsis

  494. were killed by Hutus.

  495. That's how the Rohingya

  496. genocide was justified,

  497. with 25,000 Muslim Rohingya

  498. were killed

  499. when they were killed

  500. by the Burmese military.

  501. It goes without saying,

  502. but eliminating people

  503. who are unlike us

  504. is never the way

  505. to try to preserve

  506. our cultural influence

  507. or societal power.

  508. even if wicked rulers

  509. go to Zahn.

  510. In setting himself

  511. and his people

  512. against the people of Israel,

  513. Pharaoh puts himself

  514. in direct opposition

  515. to God himself.

  516. Because as I mentioned earlier,

  517. in Genesis 15,

  518. God had promised to Abram

  519. that his descendants

  520. will come out

  521. of the land of affliction

  522. after 400 years

  523. of sojourning.

  524. And anticipating this,

  525. remember Joseph said

  526. to take my bones

  527. out with you,

  528. but that's precisely

  529. what Pharaoh is trying

  530. to prevent.

  531. He doesn't want

  532. the Israelites

  533. to leave the land.

  534. It's interesting, right?

  535. On the one hand,

  536. he feels threatened by them,

  537. but on the other hand,

  538. he doesn't want them

  539. to leave.

  540. So what's going on

  541. is he wants them

  542. to be just big enough

  543. for him to be able

  544. to abuse them

  545. and use them for labor,

  546. but he wants them

  547. to be just small enough

  548. that they'll never be

  549. a real threat

  550. to his rule.

  551. So he wants

  552. to control them.

  553. So Pharaoh reduces Israel

  554. to back-breaking

  555. slave labor

  556. as a way of subjugating them

  557. and controlling the population.

  558. He says in verses 11 to 12,

  559. therefore they set taskmasters

  560. over them

  561. to afflict them

  562. with heavy burdens.

  563. They built for Pharaoh

  564. store cities,

  565. Pithom and Ramses,

  566. but the more they were oppressed,

  567. the more they multiplied

  568. and the more they spread abroad

  569. and the Egyptians

  570. were in dread

  571. of the people of Israel.

  572. The Israelites are sent

  573. to forced labor camps

  574. to build store cities

  575. for Pharaoh

  576. and by reducing the Israelites

  577. to slave labor,

  578. the Egyptians are trying

  579. to break their spirit

  580. and strength.

  581. They're treating them

  582. like cattle,

  583. thinking perhaps

  584. that they can tame

  585. and control them

  586. like livestock,

  587. hoping perhaps

  588. that if they exhaust them

  589. with work

  590. that they would

  591. stop having

  592. so many children.

  593. But ironically,

  594. the more they were oppressed,

  595. the more they multiplied

  596. because it's the promise

  597. of God.

  598. The Egyptians learned

  599. very quickly

  600. that God cannot

  601. be thwarted.

  602. God's plans

  603. always prevail.

  604. And in Genesis 9,

  605. I mentioned this earlier,

  606. of God's command

  607. to Noah

  608. to be fruitful

  609. and multiply

  610. and fill the earth.

  611. God also said

  612. to Noah

  613. in that same passage,

  614. the fear of you

  615. and the dread of you

  616. shall be upon

  617. every beast of the earth

  618. and upon every

  619. birds of the heavens

  620. and upon everything

  621. that creeps on the ground

  622. and all the fish

  623. of the sea.

  624. Into your hand

  625. they are delivered.

  626. So it's ironic.

  627. Here the Egyptians

  628. are treating the Israelites

  629. like cattle,

  630. like slaves,

  631. but instead

  632. it's the Egyptians

  633. that become

  634. like the beasts

  635. of the earth

  636. who stand now

  637. in dread of them.

  638. If we fear God

  639. and fear no man,

  640. those who oppose God

  641. and his purposes

  642. will stand in dread of us.

  643. The Egyptians

  644. are spooked

  645. because the Israelites

  646. continue to grow

  647. so they redouble

  648. their efforts

  649. to oppress them.

  650. It says in verses 13 to 14,

  651. they ruthlessly

  652. made the people of Israel

  653. work as slaves

  654. and made their lives

  655. bitter with hard service.

  656. In mortar and brick

  657. and in all kinds

  658. of work in the field

  659. in all their work

  660. they ruthlessly

  661. made them work

  662. as slaves.

  663. Notice the repetition,

  664. the verses,

  665. verses 13 and 14,

  666. they begin and end

  667. with the statement

  668. that the Egyptians

  669. ruthlessly

  670. made the people of Israel

  671. work as slaves.

  672. And that frames

  673. the middle section

  674. in that they made

  675. their lives bitter

  676. with hard service

  677. in mortar and brick

  678. in all kinds of work

  679. in the field.

  680. Many of us

  681. having grown up

  682. with much freedom

  683. and much comfort,

  684. we don't know

  685. what it's like

  686. to be made bitter

  687. with hard service.

  688. To do work

  689. that is so intensive

  690. and unrelenting

  691. that it literally

  692. breaks our back,

  693. drives us to despair.

  694. Brick making

  695. was that kind of labor.

  696. There's ancient literature

  697. that mock brick makers

  698. because they were

  699. always muddy

  700. and always miserable.

  701. That's what the Egyptians

  702. forced the Israelites

  703. to do.

  704. And in this short span

  705. of two verses,

  706. there are five words

  707. that contain

  708. the Hebrew root

  709. for serve.

  710. The word slave,

  711. the word service,

  712. the word work,

  713. they're all variations

  714. of the same Hebrew word

  715. for serve.

  716. And this is significant

  717. because the book of Exodus

  718. poses this question

  719. again and again.

  720. Will the Israelites

  721. be servants of Pharaoh

  722. or will they be servants

  723. of the Lord?

  724. And that's why

  725. in his confrontation

  726. with Pharaoh,

  727. God says over and over again,

  728. let my people go

  729. that they may

  730. serve me.

  731. And here again then,

  732. we see Pharaoh

  733. standing in direct opposition

  734. to God's purposes.

  735. He wants Israel

  736. to serve him

  737. rather than God.

  738. He forces Israel

  739. to make store cities

  740. but later,

  741. God will liberate Israel

  742. to commission them

  743. to build his tabernacle.

  744. The word tabernacle

  745. and store city

  746. in the Hebrew

  747. sound almost exactly

  748. the same

  749. and are spelled

  750. almost exactly the same.

  751. So there's a contrast

  752. there also.

  753. The Israelites

  754. should not be reduced

  755. to slave labor

  756. serving Pharaoh

  757. and building his store cities

  758. because they belong

  759. to the Lord

  760. and should be serving

  761. the Lord

  762. and building

  763. his tabernacle.

  764. who are you serving?

  765. Who are you working for?

  766. Are you merely

  767. building

  768. storehouses of man?

  769. Or are you building

  770. God's house?

  771. You might be

  772. working hard

  773. to build

  774. a company

  775. or a career

  776. but what are you doing

  777. to build up

  778. God's people?

  779. His church?

  780. His temple?

  781. Is your life

  782. dominated by

  783. your work

  784. to the neglect

  785. of the worship

  786. of God?

  787. Even when you work

  788. you are not

  789. ultimately

  790. to work

  791. for man

  792. or for yourself

  793. but you are

  794. to work

  795. for God

  796. as an act

  797. of worship.

  798. Colossians 3

  799. 23

  800. 24

  801. says

  802. whatever you do

  803. work heartily

  804. ask for the Lord

  805. and not for man

  806. knowing that

  807. from the Lord

  808. you will receive

  809. the inheritance

  810. as your reward.

  811. If you work

  812. only for men

  813. you will not work

  814. as you ought to.

  815. You might cut corners

  816. and slack off

  817. and no one's looking

  818. or you might

  819. overwork

  820. and enslave

  821. yourself to man

  822. because you're

  823. expecting to receive

  824. your reward

  825. from man

  826. and not

  827. from God.

  828. Are you living

  829. as a servant

  830. of man

  831. or as a servant

  832. of God?

  833. Pharaoh is

  834. thwarted again

  835. in his efforts

  836. to control Israel

  837. so he resorts

  838. to even greater

  839. atrocities

  840. he says in

  841. verses 15

  842. to 16

  843. then the king

  844. of Egypt

  845. said to the

  846. Hebrew midwives

  847. one of whom

  848. was named

  849. Shiphrah

  850. and the other

  851. Puah

  852. when you serve

  853. as midwife

  854. to the Hebrew

  855. woman

  856. and see them

  857. on the birthstool

  858. if it is a son

  859. you shall kill him

  860. but if it is

  861. a daughter

  862. she shall live.

  863. After enslaving

  864. God's people

  865. and exploiting them

  866. the wicked king

  867. resorts to infanticide

  868. and then he tries

  869. to hide it.

  870. He commands

  871. the Jewish midwives

  872. Shiphrah and Puah

  873. to kill the male babies

  874. when they are born.

  875. If they are

  876. probably not

  877. the only Hebrew

  878. midwives

  879. because if that

  880. was the case

  881. they would have

  882. been really

  883. really busy.

  884. But Pharaoh

  885. doesn't need

  886. to command

  887. all the midwives

  888. to do that

  889. right?

  890. Because his goal

  891. is not

  892. the extermination

  893. of the Jews

  894. it's control

  895. population control

  896. so he wants

  897. enough Jews

  898. to press into service

  899. but not so many

  900. to risk rebellion

  901. so even if only

  902. two midwives

  903. cooperate

  904. he could kill

  905. a significant

  906. number of male

  907. babies

  908. Hebrew babies

  909. over time

  910. limiting

  911. and he could

  912. in doing so

  913. also limit

  914. the number

  915. of people

  916. who are in

  917. the know

  918. and keep

  919. himself

  920. from being

  921. exposed

  922. in his

  923. sinister plot.

  924. And why

  925. male babies?

  926. Because the

  927. line

  928. the family

  929. tradition

  930. passes on

  931. through the

  932. men

  933. in this

  934. culture

  935. Egyptian

  936. men can

  937. take the

  938. Hebrew

  939. woman

  940. but if

  941. the Hebrew

  942. men

  943. continue

  944. to marry

  945. Hebrew

  946. woman

  947. then that

  948. line

  949. that

  950. family

  951. that

  952. identity

  953. continues

  954. presumably

  955. he expected

  956. the midwives

  957. to kill

  958. the babies

  959. without being

  960. detected

  961. coming to

  962. acting like

  963. they're helping

  964. with the birth

  965. and then

  966. the unthinkable

  967. act

  968. I'm sorry

  969. the baby

  970. didn't make

  971. it.

  972. which was

  973. common

  974. neonatal

  975. deaths

  976. were more

  977. common

  978. back in

  979. those days

  980. it's a

  981. wicked

  982. plan

  983. and he's

  984. turning the

  985. Hebrew

  986. midwives

  987. against their

  988. own people

  989. and violating

  990. the king's

  991. command of

  992. course would

  993. have dire

  994. circumstances

  995. and so these

  996. Hebrew

  997. midwives have

  998. to decide for

  999. themselves whether

  1000. they will

  1001. preserve their

  1002. own careers

  1003. their own

  1004. livelihoods

  1005. perhaps their

  1006. own lives

  1007. or save

  1008. the male

  1009. babies

  1010. that they

  1011. have in

  1012. order to

  1013. kill

  1014. and verse

  1015. 17 to 21

  1016. tell us what

  1017. happens next

  1018. but the

  1019. midwives

  1020. feared

  1021. God

  1022. and did

  1023. not do

  1024. as the

  1025. king of

  1026. Egypt

  1027. commanded

  1028. them

  1029. but let

  1030. the male

  1031. children

  1032. live

  1033. so the

  1034. king of

  1035. Egypt

  1036. called

  1037. the

  1038. midwives

  1039. and said

  1040. to them

  1041. why have

  1042. you done

  1043. this

  1044. and let

  1045. the male

  1046. children

  1047. live

  1048. the

  1049. midwives

  1050. said to

  1051. Pharaoh

  1052. because

  1053. the

  1054. Hebrew

  1055. women

  1056. are not

  1057. like

  1058. the

  1059. Egyptian

  1060. women

  1061. for

  1062. they

  1063. are

  1064. vigorous

  1065. and give

  1066. birth

  1067. before

  1068. the

  1069. midwife

  1070. comes

  1071. to them

  1072. that's a

  1073. way to rub

  1074. it in his

  1075. face

  1076. so God

  1077. dealt well

  1078. with the

  1079. midwives

  1080. and the

  1081. people

  1082. multiplied

  1083. and grew

  1084. very strong

  1085. and because

  1086. the midwives

  1087. feared

  1088. God

  1089. he gave

  1090. them

  1091. families

  1092. Shiphrah

  1093. and Pua's

  1094. defiance

  1095. of Pharaoh

  1096. is a display

  1097. of remarkable

  1098. courage

  1099. because remember

  1100. that Pharaohs

  1101. were treated

  1102. like gods

  1103. in those

  1104. days

  1105. had absolute

  1106. power

  1107. in their

  1108. nation

  1109. Rachmire

  1110. who served

  1111. as prime

  1112. minister

  1113. under

  1114. Pharaohs

  1115. Thutmose

  1116. the third

  1117. and Amenhotep

  1118. the second

  1119. in the

  1120. 15th century

  1121. BC

  1122. describes the

  1123. Pharaoh

  1124. this way

  1125. quote

  1126. what is

  1127. the king

  1128. of upper

  1129. and lower

  1130. Egypt

  1131. he is a

  1132. god

  1133. by whose

  1134. dealings

  1135. one lives

  1136. the father

  1137. and mother

  1138. of all

  1139. men

  1140. alone

  1141. by himself

  1142. without

  1143. an

  1144. equal

  1145. that's

  1146. what

  1147. Shiphrah

  1148. and Pua

  1149. are up

  1150. against

  1151. David

  1152. and Goliath

  1153. situation

  1154. certainly

  1155. except

  1156. a lot

  1157. worse

  1158. since

  1159. verse 21

  1160. tells us

  1161. that God

  1162. gave

  1163. Shiphrah

  1164. and Pua

  1165. families

  1166. in response

  1167. to their

  1168. obedience

  1169. to him

  1170. at the

  1171. time

  1172. of

  1173. the

  1174. Pharaoh's

  1175. command

  1176. they did

  1177. not have

  1178. families

  1179. so they

  1180. didn't have

  1181. husbands

  1182. to protect

  1183. them

  1184. or look

  1185. after them

  1186. maybe

  1187. they were

  1188. young

  1189. women

  1190. or single

  1191. girls

  1192. or maybe

  1193. widows

  1194. Shiphrah

  1195. is a

  1196. Hebrew

  1197. name

  1198. that

  1199. means

  1200. fair

  1201. or

  1202. beautiful

  1203. and

  1204. Pua

  1205. is a

  1206. Canaanite

  1207. name

  1208. that

  1209. means

  1210. little

  1211. girl

  1212. here

  1213. are

  1214. Shiphrah

  1215. and Pua

  1216. the

  1217. fair

  1218. girl

  1219. and the

  1220. little

  1221. girl

  1222. defying

  1223. one of

  1224. the most

  1225. powerful

  1226. man

  1227. most

  1228. powerful

  1229. ruler

  1230. in the

  1231. ancient

  1232. world

  1233. and how

  1234. were they

  1235. able to

  1236. stand up

  1237. to

  1238. Pharaoh

  1239. twice

  1240. this

  1241. passage

  1242. tells us

  1243. because

  1244. in

  1245. verse

  1246. 17

  1247. verse

  1248. 21

  1249. they

  1250. feared

  1251. God

  1252. they

  1253. were

  1254. not

  1255. controlled

  1256. by the

  1257. fear

  1258. of

  1259. Pharaoh

  1260. because

  1261. they

  1262. feared

  1263. God

  1264. if

  1265. you

  1266. grew

  1267. up

  1268. by

  1269. the

  1270. ocean

  1271. swimming

  1272. in

  1273. its

  1274. waves

  1275. you're

  1276. not

  1277. going

  1278. to

  1279. be

  1280. afraid

  1281. to

  1282. swim

  1283. among

  1284. the

  1285. ripples

  1286. in

  1287. the

  1288. pond

  1289. this

  1290. doesn't

  1291. mean

  1292. that

  1293. Shiphrah

  1294. and

  1295. Pua

  1296. were

  1297. terrified

  1298. of

  1299. God

  1300. it's

  1301. referring

  1302. to

  1303. their

  1304. reverence

  1305. their

  1306. acknowledgement

  1307. of

  1308. God's

  1309. authority

  1310. and

  1311. power

  1312. it's

  1313. the

  1314. fear

  1315. that

  1316. constrains

  1317. them

  1318. to

  1319. live

  1320. with

  1321. integrity

  1322. knowing

  1323. that

  1324. all

  1325. that

  1326. they

  1327. do

  1328. ultimately

  1329. is

  1330. accountable

  1331. to

  1332. God

  1333. to

  1334. fear

  1335. the

  1336. Lord

  1337. is

  1338. to

  1339. live

  1340. in

  1341. humility

  1342. before

  1343. the

  1344. presence

  1345. of

  1346. under

  1347. the

  1348. authority

  1349. of

  1350. and

  1351. then

  1352. for

  1353. the glory

  1354. of

  1355. God

  1356. Proverbs

  1357. 29

  1358. 25

  1359. to 26

  1360. says

  1361. this

  1362. the fear

  1363. of man

  1364. lays a

  1365. snare

  1366. but whoever

  1367. trusts in

  1368. the Lord

  1369. is safe

  1370. many seek

  1371. the face

  1372. of a ruler

  1373. but it is

  1374. from the Lord

  1375. that a man

  1376. gets justice

  1377. so Shiphrah

  1378. and Pua

  1379. knew that

  1380. they did not

  1381. seek the face

  1382. of Pharaoh

  1383. they sought

  1384. the face

  1385. of the Lord

  1386. God

  1387. and sought

  1388. his protection

  1389. and his

  1390. justice

  1391. instead of

  1392. fearing man

  1393. they feared

  1394. God and trusted

  1395. in him

  1396. if we

  1397. want to

  1398. stand up

  1399. to crooked

  1400. bosses

  1401. and rulers

  1402. we too

  1403. need to

  1404. cultivate

  1405. the fear

  1406. of the

  1407. Lord

  1408. if we

  1409. want to

  1410. serve

  1411. the

  1412. Lord

  1413. we must

  1414. fear him

  1415. and not

  1416. men

  1417. and Shiphrah

  1418. and Pua

  1419. are rewarded

  1420. for their

  1421. fear of

  1422. God

  1423. verse 21

  1424. says

  1425. and because

  1426. the midwives

  1427. feared God

  1428. he gave

  1429. them

  1430. families

  1431. families

  1432. in Hebrew

  1433. the phrase

  1434. is literally

  1435. he gave

  1436. them houses

  1437. because house

  1438. can represent

  1439. the household

  1440. and the word

  1441. also sets up

  1442. a wonderful

  1443. contrast

  1444. because

  1445. the term

  1446. Pharaoh

  1447. literally means

  1448. the great

  1449. house

  1450. it originally

  1451. referred to

  1452. the palatial

  1453. estate of

  1454. Pharaoh

  1455. of the

  1456. Egyptian king

  1457. and then

  1458. eventually

  1459. it came to

  1460. refer to

  1461. the king

  1462. himself

  1463. so here

  1464. Shiphrah

  1465. and Pua

  1466. defy

  1467. the great

  1468. house

  1469. and receive

  1470. houses

  1471. from the

  1472. Lord

  1473. themselves

  1474. if you

  1475. guys are

  1476. into history

  1477. maybe some

  1478. of you are

  1479. wondering

  1480. at this

  1481. point

  1482. who this

  1483. infamous

  1484. Pharaoh

  1485. is

  1486. because

  1487. Egyptians

  1488. kept a

  1489. pretty good

  1490. record

  1491. of their

  1492. kings

  1493. and it

  1494. is possible

  1495. by corroborating

  1496. historical

  1497. and architectural

  1498. data with

  1499. what scripture

  1500. tells us

  1501. to identify

  1502. the most

  1503. likely

  1504. candidate

  1505. but I'm

  1506. not going

  1507. to tell

  1508. you the

  1509. name

  1510. because

  1511. scripture

  1512. doesn't

  1513. tell us

  1514. you'll

  1515. search

  1516. in vain

  1517. through the

  1518. chapters of

  1519. Exodus

  1520. for any

  1521. name

  1522. of

  1523. Pharaoh

  1524. none

  1525. of the

  1526. Egyptian kings

  1527. are named

  1528. in the

  1529. book of

  1530. Exodus

  1531. but God

  1532. is named

  1533. Yehovah

  1534. the Pharaoh

  1535. is not

  1536. named

  1537. but guess

  1538. who else

  1539. is named

  1540. Shiphrah

  1541. and Pua

  1542. the Hebrew

  1543. midwives

  1544. are named

  1545. in Exodus

    Exodus 1 chapter mention

  1546. chapter 1

  1547. surely

  1548. Moses

  1549. if he knew

  1550. the name

  1551. of those

  1552. two midwives

  1553. would have

  1554. known

  1555. who the

  1556. Egyptian king

  1557. was

  1558. but he

  1559. doesn't name

  1560. him to make

  1561. a theological

  1562. point

  1563. because from

  1564. God's

  1565. eternal

  1566. point of

  1567. view

  1568. this Pharaoh

  1569. however powerful

  1570. he may have

  1571. been

  1572. is an

  1573. anonymous

  1574. non-entity

  1575. but these

  1576. Hebrew

  1577. midwives

  1578. they are

  1579. his

  1580. precious

  1581. daughters

  1582. the heroes

  1583. of the story

  1584. from God's

  1585. point of

  1586. view

  1587. so that

  1588. children

  1589. can be

  1590. named

  1591. after them

  1592. so their

  1593. names

  1594. are here

  1595. your name

  1596. might never

  1597. be found

  1598. among the

  1599. who's who

  1600. lists

  1601. of the

  1602. world

  1603. you might

  1604. not make

  1605. it to

  1606. any kind

  1607. of hall

  1608. of fame

  1609. but I

  1610. can assure

  1611. you that

  1612. almighty

  1613. God

  1614. creator

  1615. of the

  1616. universe

  1617. is not

  1618. impressed

  1619. with those

  1620. lists

  1621. what

  1622. ultimately

  1623. counts

  1624. is not

  1625. whether or

  1626. not

  1627. you are

  1628. known

  1629. by

  1630. man

  1631. but

  1632. whether or

  1633. not

  1634. you are

  1635. known

  1636. by

  1637. God

  1638. whether

  1639. or not

  1640. he has

  1641. called

  1642. you

  1643. by

  1644. name

  1645. Isaiah

    Isaiah 43:1

  1646. 43

  1647. verse 1

  1648. says

  1649. now

  1650. thus says

  1651. the

  1652. Lord

  1653. he who

  1654. created

  1655. you

  1656. old

  1657. Jacob

  1658. he who

  1659. formed

  1660. you

  1661. oh

  1662. Israel

  1663. fear

  1664. not

  1665. for I

  1666. have

  1667. redeemed

  1668. you

  1669. I

  1670. have

  1671. called

  1672. you

  1673. by

  1674. name

  1675. you

  1676. are

  1677. mine

  1678. the

  1679. book of

  1680. revelation

  1681. mentions

  1682. again and

  1683. again a

  1684. book called

  1685. book of

  1686. life

  1687. on which

  1688. is written

  1689. the name

  1690. of God's

  1691. chosen

  1692. people

  1693. the names

  1694. that the

  1695. Lord Jesus

  1696. will confess

  1697. before his

  1698. father

  1699. and before

  1700. his angels

  1701. saying

  1702. these

  1703. belong

  1704. to the

  1705. kingdom

  1706. they

  1707. belong

  1708. to me

  1709. I

  1710. have

  1711. saved

  1712. them

  1713. but

  1714. anyone

  1715. whose

  1716. name

  1717. is not

  1718. written

  1719. in the

  1720. book

  1721. of life

  1722. will be

  1723. thrown

  1724. into the

  1725. lake

  1726. of fire

  1727. is your

  1728. name

  1729. written

  1730. in that

  1731. book

  1732. if you

  1733. want

  1734. your

  1735. name

  1736. in the

  1737. book

  1738. of life

  1739. of the

  1740. lamb

  1741. who was

  1742. slain

  1743. you

  1744. must

  1745. confess

  1746. the

  1747. name

  1748. of that

  1749. lamb

  1750. the

  1751. Lord

  1752. Jesus

  1753. Christ

  1754. Pharaoh

  1755. is even

  1756. more upset

  1757. and so

  1758. at the

  1759. end

  1760. of this

  1761. chapter

  1762. one

  1763. he

  1764. resorts

  1765. to even

  1766. greater

  1767. atrocity

  1768. he says

  1769. then Pharaoh

  1770. commanded

  1771. all his

  1772. people

  1773. every

  1774. son

  1775. that is

  1776. born

  1777. to the

  1778. Hebrews

  1779. you

  1780. shall

  1781. cast

  1782. into

  1783. the

  1784. Nile

  1785. but

  1786. you

  1787. shall

  1788. let

  1789. every

  1790. daughter

  1791. live

  1792. now

  1793. he's

  1794. indiscriminate

  1795. not just

  1796. the ones

  1797. that the

  1798. midwives

  1799. happened

  1800. to find

  1801. all the

  1802. male

  1803. babies

  1804. take

  1805. them

  1806. down

  1807. 1500

  1808. years

  1809. or so

  1810. later

  1811. another

  1812. king

  1813. would

  1814. try

  1815. to do

  1816. the

  1817. same

  1818. to try

  1819. to wipe

  1820. out

  1821. the

  1822. seed

  1823. of

  1824. Israel

  1825. to try

  1826. to kill

  1827. the

  1828. Messiah

  1829. who was

  1830. born

  1831. King

  1832. Herod

  1833. tries

  1834. to kill

  1835. the male

  1836. babies

  1837. but

  1838. Jesus

  1839. like

  1840. Moses

  1841. his

  1842. forerunner

  1843. the one

  1844. who

  1845. foreshadowed

  1846. him

  1847. Jesus

  1848. survives

  1849. by

  1850. God's

  1851. to fulfill

  1852. God's

  1853. sovereign

  1854. purposes

  1855. and this

  1856. Jesus

  1857. lives

  1858. the life

  1859. of perfect

  1860. obedience

  1861. and then

  1862. he dies

  1863. on the

  1864. cross

  1865. for our

  1866. sins

  1867. to pay

  1868. the penalty

  1869. for our

  1870. rebellion

  1871. against

  1872. God

  1873. we are

  1874. described

  1875. in scripture

  1876. as enemies

  1877. of God

  1878. but Romans

  1879. 5

  1880. 10 says

  1881. while we

  1882. were enemies

  1883. like Pharaoh

  1884. we were

  1885. reconciled to

  1886. God by the

  1887. death of

  1888. his son

  1889. Jesus

  1890. the son

  1891. of God

  1892. became a

  1893. son of

  1894. man

  1895. and died

  1896. for our

  1897. sins

  1898. on the

  1899. cross

  1900. as our

  1901. representative

  1902. as our

  1903. substitute

  1904. and it's

  1905. by his

  1906. death

  1907. and by his

  1908. resurrection

  1909. that he

  1910. reconciles

  1911. us to

  1912. God

  1913. even though

  1914. we've been

  1915. rebelling

  1916. against him

  1917. as every

  1918. bit as much

  1919. as the

  1920. Egyptians

  1921. as Pharaoh

  1922. himself

  1923. if you're

  1924. here today

  1925. and you

  1926. have not

  1927. confessed

  1928. the name

  1929. of Jesus

  1930. I urge you

  1931. to confess

  1932. the name

  1933. of the

  1934. Lord

  1935. Jesus

  1936. he promises

  1937. us in

  1938. Matthew

    Matthew 10:32

  1939. 10

  1940. verse 32

  1941. everyone

  1942. who

  1943. acknowledges

  1944. me

  1945. before

  1946. men

  1947. I

  1948. also

  1949. will

  1950. acknowledge

  1951. before

  1952. my

  1953. father

  1954. who

  1955. is

  1956. in

  1957. heaven

  1958. acknowledge

  1959. the name

  1960. of Christ

  1961. confess him

  1962. as your

  1963. Lord and

  1964. Savior

  1965. and our

  1966. good Lord

  1967. will call

  1968. you by

  1969. name

  1970. and you

  1971. will find

  1972. your name

  1973. indelibly

  1974. written

  1975. in the

  1976. book of

  1977. life

  1978. forevermore

  1979. let's

  1980. pray

  1981. God we

  1982. rejoice

  1983. this evening

  1984. that our

  1985. names

  1986. are written

  1987. in the

  1988. book of

  1989. life

  1990. ours

  1991. are the

  1992. names

  1993. that should

  1994. have been

  1995. blotted out

  1996. from history

  1997. never

  1998. remembered

  1999. because we

  2000. are rebels

  2001. guilty of

  2002. treason

  2003. sinners

  2004. against the

  2005. most high

  2006. God who

  2007. has done

  2008. nothing but

  2009. good for

  2010. us

  2011. and yet

  2012. Lord you

  2013. have been

  2014. so gracious

  2015. and merciful

  2016. to us

  2017. thank you

  2018. for sending

  2019. Jesus to

  2020. save us

  2021. thank you

  2022. for engraving

  2023. our name

  2024. in your

  2025. book

  2026. through our

  2027. faith in

  2028. Jesus

  2029. thank you

  2030. for knowing

  2031. us intimately

  2032. calling us

  2033. by name

  2034. and leading

  2035. us every

  2036. day of
