  1. Well, welcome. Welcome to Maranatha Conference,

  2. Shabiba, all that you want to call it Year #25.

  3. Yes, Amen. My first time here was in 2014,

  4. and I have to, I have to be honest from the beginning that I

  5. don't remember a more awake, passionate, excited opening

  6. service than this one tonight. Yeah, man, yeah, that's that's

  7. how my person. You might disagree, but that's

  8. what I sensed. So I'm excited, and I also want

  9. to let you know from the beginning that because you chose

  10. to come here and I I pray and trust that you came here for the

  11. Lord primarily, the Lord will reward you, because when we do

  12. seek Him, He does bless us. And so you're you're not wasting

  13. your time. This weekend you didn't

  14. sacrifice much, I'm sure. Maybe in the natural feels that

  15. way. But the Lord will reward us for

  16. seeking him in this way. And so I'm eager to see how He

  17. will bless us as we seek his face.

  18. You might have noticed these tshirts, the tshirt that I'm

  19. wearing, tshirt that the priest he was wearing, some other

  20. people sprinkled around. You might have noticed what is

  21. said on the back. And if you don't know what's

  22. said on the back, I won't turn around.

  23. But I'll tell you, something greater is here, something

  24. greater is here. Now that's not a phrase that we

  25. came up with. That is a statement that Jesus

  26. Christ himself made. And I want to show you in the

  27. Bible very quickly where Jesus said it and how many times he

  28. said it in the same context for you to see what he was trying to

  29. declare about himself. So turn with me briefly to

  30. Matthew chapter 12. And I want you to see here

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  31. beginning in verse 6, Matthew 12, Jesus was going through

  32. grain fields on the Sabbath with his disciples.

  33. They were hungry. They began to pluck heads of

  34. grain and they ate. And the Pharisees were there to

  35. spy on Jesus. Try to find something wrong with

  36. Jesus and his followers. And they thought they got him

  37. somewhere in these fields. And Jesus corrects their

  38. understanding of the Sabbath, and he proclaims his authority

  39. in this way. Verse six, he says to them, I

  40. tell you, something greater than the temple is here, something

  41. greater than the temple is here. That's Jesus's first statement.

  42. But then you continue and you see in the same context as he

  43. engages with the religious leaders.

  44. In verse 41 of the same chapter, he says the men of Nineveh will

  45. rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it.

  46. For they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold,

  47. something greater than Jonah is here number two.

  48. And immediately right after, in verse 42, Jesus gives his third

  49. and final reference concerning himself and his superiority.

  50. Where he says, the Queen of the South will rise up at the

  51. judgment with this generation and condemn it.

  52. For she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of

  53. Solomon. And behold, something greater

  54. than Solomon is here, Something greater than the Temple is here,

  55. Something greater than Jonah is here, something greater than

  56. Solomon is here. Now, out of all the things that

  57. Christ could have referred himself to, out of all the

  58. things that Christ could have referenced, why these three

  59. identities? Why these three realms, so to

  60. speak? Well, for one, the Jew would

  61. have understood very well what Jesus was trying to communicate

  62. by contrasting himself more than contrasting, towering over these

  63. things that were highly prized and treasured by the people of

  64. Israel. More specifically, what Christ

  65. is trying to say is that he is the fulfillment of the three

  66. great offices that were in operation during the Old

  67. Covenant. And so by saying that he was

  68. greater than the temple, he's actually declaring that his

  69. priesthood is more significant and more effective that his

  70. offering as a High priest pleases.

  71. God satisfies his justice, satisfies his demands, and makes

  72. a one time offering that never has to be repeated and seals

  73. your salvation forever. Something greater than the

  74. temple is here a greater priest, and that priest is also the

  75. sacrifice. Something greater than Jonah is

  76. here. Here's Christ expressing that he

  77. occupies the office of the prophet.

  78. And not only was he sent by the Father to proclaim the word of

  79. God, he is the perfect expression and the fullest

  80. revelation of God. He is the radiance of the glory

  81. of God, and he's the exact imprint of his nature.

  82. Something greater than Jonah is here.

  83. Yes, we understand the immediate context is because he's going to

  84. perform a miracle that was foretold by Jonah.

  85. But more than that, the office itself.

  86. I'm the prophet of prophets. I am the.

  87. Word of God. And lastly, he says something

  88. greater than Solomon is here. Now we're talking about what?

  89. What do you think it is his role as what?

  90. King. King.

  91. And so he is declaring that he is king.

  92. Not just king, but king of kings, governing not just one

  93. nation, one people, but governing the world, the

  94. universe who knows how to display and demonstrate perfect

  95. righteousness and execute true justice.

  96. And he also knowing how to rule and oversee the hearts of men

  97. perfectly, perfectly, as he is the king of the Kingdom now and

  98. will usher in that Kingdom here on earth, forever and ever and

  99. ever. And so you have Jesus saying, I

  100. am greater than the temple because I am a greater priest,

  101. and I have a greater sacrifice. I'm I'm greater than Jonah

  102. because I am the fullest expression.

  103. Of the word of God, the nature of God, the character of God.

  104. And I am the king of kings, the long-awaited son of.

  105. David, who will occupy the throne for eternity?

  106. Now, that's more than just a clever, crafty way of

  107. interpreting Jesus's words. Why is it significant for us to

  108. understand Jesus declaring himself to be superior in these

  109. areas? Because how you view Christ will

  110. determine how you honor Christ. You see, Jesus said these things

  111. to his immediate audience because they refused to

  112. acknowledge his authority. They reserved their repentance

  113. and they would not give him the awe that he deserved as king.

  114. None of a repented when a man much more inferior to Jesus gave

  115. a very brief sermon. And here's Christ who was giving

  116. the words of spirit and life, and these men hardened their

  117. hearts even more. Solomon, as fabulous as he was,

  118. was flawed in many ways. And here is the king who

  119. beautifies wisdom, who perfects it, who has not one thing wrong

  120. with him, and they wouldn't bow the knee.

  121. Here's the one who did not sin, and they try to find sin in him,

  122. and he declares that he is greater than the temple and they

  123. would not acknowledge his position.

  124. How you view Jesus Christ is the most important thing about your

  125. life. It's the most important thing.

  126. Not your job, not your hairstyle, not what you do in

  127. your retirement, what you study. The most important thing about

  128. your brief mist of life is how you perceive the.

  129. Person of Jesus Christ, Jesus says unless you believe that I

  130. am He, you will die in your sins if you have a wrong view of

  131. Christ that will determine your eternal destination.

  132. This is not a matter of opinion. This is not a subjective

  133. sparring that we can do. No, it's a matter of eternal

  134. life. How you view Christ will

  135. ultimately determine where you spend eternity.

  136. And if you if you are a person who says, I see him as the high

  137. priest, I see him as the Word of God Incarnate, I see him as the

  138. King of Kings. How you view Christ will also

  139. determine the depth of your sanctification doesn't just stop

  140. at you expressing your belief in him.

  141. It's ultimately you, something that you continue to discover

  142. about him, how great he is more and more and more do you see and

  143. perceive it. And that has an impact and how

  144. you're conformed to the very same image of his greatness, of

  145. his moral greatness especially. And so how you view Christ and

  146. the goal here today is we would need so many meetings to touch

  147. on each of those components of his nature and of his work.

  148. And so we're going to stick with Solomon for this weekend.

  149. Why Solomon personally? Because in reading about Solomon

  150. and 1st Kings a few months back, I saw the great detail that the

  151. Holy Spirit gave concerning him as king and his accomplishments

  152. and what he was able to do and his abilities.

  153. And what was ringing in my mind as I was scaling through First

    1 Kings 2 chapter mention

  154. Kings chapter 2-3 all the way up to 10 and 11 all through that,

  155. as as you were just you're just reading this blueprint of this

  156. man's amazing capacity. Jesus is greater.

  157. Jesus is greater. Jesus said I'm greater than even

  158. him. So I thought to endeavor to say,

  159. Okay, Lord, I know you're greater.

  160. That's my theology, right? It's wrong to say that Jesus is

  161. not greater. But show me how you're greater.

  162. Let me see it. Let me behold it.

  163. And I hope that you would behold it with me and that you would

  164. see it for yourself. Here's where I'll end in this

  165. brief introduction. When we get, when we get

  166. together, when this is organized year after year, our desire is

  167. many things. One that people who don't know

  168. Christ would come to know Christ.

  169. That happens, I believe, every year it's happened.

  170. Or at least one person has given their life to Christ, which is

  171. amazing, right? To organize all that for that

  172. goal is, is, is something that God would approve of.

  173. Obviously for Saints to be encouraged to be built up, to

  174. meet one another, to be refreshed in a very dark and

  175. deprived world, absolutely. But there is a specific goal in

  176. this, in this conference, at least in my prayers, and that is

  177. this, that every single person here.

  178. Would leave with a ferocious desire to master.

  179. The word of God, if there's anything that we're hoping for

  180. and praying for, is that you would leave here with this new

  181. ambition to devour the Bible for yourself.

  182. To not be content with looking at just some things, but to.

  183. But to ask God to open your eyes to see all that he wants to show

  184. you in his written word. And one way of being able to

  185. hopefully stimulate that is to see how one verse can take up a

  186. conference is to see how one statement that Jesus makes

  187. Behold, something greater than than Solomon is here, would

  188. cause you to say this word is inexhaustible.

  189. Where does this well end? And I'll give you a hint it

  190. doesn't. And that you would for the rest

  191. of your days draw from this well, as we take Matthew 1242

  192. and try to ring out as much as we can from it, which we won't

  193. for you to say, if that's what can happen with one verse.

  194. Lord, I want to know all that you have to say to me, and I

  195. want to show you what's at cost. Just one example.

  196. What's at cost if you and I as believers do not value?

  197. The word of God. Do not seek to know all that God

  198. has said. At least familiarize yourself

  199. with it. Let me give you an example.

  200. Turn with me to Luke 24, Luke 24 and go to verse 13 says here in

  201. Luke 2413 that very day. Two of them.

  202. We're going to a village named Emmaus, about 7 miles from

  203. Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these

  204. things that had happened. While they were talking and

  205. discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with

  206. them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

  207. And he said to them, what is this conversation that you were

  208. holding with each other as you walk?

  209. And they stood still, looking sad.

  210. And one of them, named Cleopas, answered him.

  211. Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the

  212. things that have happened there in these days?

  213. And he said them want things. And they set them concerning

  214. Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet, mighty indeed, and

  215. word before God and all the people, and how our chief

  216. priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and

  217. crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the

  218. one to redeem Israel. Yes.

  219. And besides all this, it is now the third day since these things

  220. happened. We have two sad disciples

  221. walking towards Emmaus. Jesus camouflages himself.

  222. Does it make himself known? How true is it that as you're

  223. walking, Christ doesn't necessarily show himself all the

  224. time He camouflages himself and he.

  225. He wants to hear. He already knew their

  226. conversation, but he wanted them to open up and see what was the

  227. reason for their sadness. And they do they they open up

  228. and they say are you? Did you just walk in here?

  229. Did you not hear the news is everybody knows what just

  230. happened. This mighty prophet that we were

  231. hoping was a fulfillment of the prophets.

  232. He disappointed us. They killed them and our hopes

  233. are dashed. Now here's Jesus inquiring the

  234. source of their sorrow. Now, what would what would you

  235. do if if you were a pastor? You probably put your arm around

  236. these these disciples, say it's okay, and try to comfort them

  237. and try to give some kind of assistance to their heavy

  238. hearts. Here's what Jesus does verse 25.

  239. And he said to them, Oh, foolish ones.

  240. That seems kind of insensitive, doesn't it?

  241. Oh, foolish ones. I have a feeling that you're not

  242. going to get that inseminary for your counseling course, but this

  243. is Jesus. His ways are perfect, he said to

  244. them. Oh, foolish ones, Let me say it

  245. one more time. Rebuke is necessary sometimes in

  246. the Christian walk, oh foolish ones, and slow of heart, to

  247. believe all that the prophets have spoken.

  248. Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these

  249. things and enter into his glory? What is Christ getting at here?

  250. He's diagnosing the real source of their problems.

  251. The source of the problems is not that they believed the right

  252. things and what they believed did not come to pass.

  253. It was that they did not believe everything.

  254. They were ignorant of all that the prophets had spoken.

  255. Either they were willfully and selectively interpreting the

  256. word of God, or they were negligent, and that is their

  257. responsibility. Nonetheless, look what Jesus

  258. says carefully, oh foolish ones, slow of heart, to believe all

  259. all that the prophets have spoken.

  260. You believed some you're familiar with a fraction.

  261. Your heart was drawn to the political Messiah, the Redeemer

  262. of the oppression from foreign nations, the prosperity that was

  263. once known under Solomon's reign.

  264. Perhaps this is what you were drawing, and that was a that was

  265. a common problem for all the Jews.

  266. Some people are sympathetic towards the Pharisees because

  267. they thought, well, maybe maybe the word of God was a little bit

  268. complicated, and that's why they didn't understand all that Jesus

  269. said. That's not true.

  270. And that's that's that's what we see here with Christ.

  271. He blames them. The scriptures were clear.

  272. You just chose to turn your eyes away from all that God had to

  273. say. About myself and I think the

  274. problem for the Jews is the problem of many Christians

  275. today. Let me put it this way.

  276. There is much confusion, frustration, depression, dare I

  277. say, and all these spiritual maladies based on one main

  278. thing, a bad spiritual diet with.

  279. The word of God. What's the reason why they were

  280. sad? Jesus made it clear you didn't

  281. take in all that God said. Just some, not all.

  282. And we look across the lens and we see perhaps very weak

  283. Christians. We see people who are

  284. frustrated, people who are roller coaster with their

  285. devotion. And I would say that the main

  286. cause is the very same reason what Jesus brings up here.

  287. A lack of willingness to embrace all that God has to say, a lack

  288. of willingness to investigate all that God has to say.

  289. And because of that, there is weakness where there doesn't

  290. need to be weakness. And there was sadness where

  291. there doesn't need to be sadness, and there's brokenness

  292. where there doesn't need to be brokenness, and there's fear

  293. where there doesn't need to be fear.

  294. The word of God is the answer. Say prove it.

  295. Look what Jesus does. How does he solve this?

  296. How does he treat this wound? Verse 27 This is what Pastor

  297. Jesus does. And beginning with Moses and all

  298. the prophets, he interpreted to them and all the scriptures the

  299. things concerning himself. How does the Lord treat their

  300. sadness? He opens the scriptures to them

  301. because he knew that the reason why they were sad is because

  302. they didn't open up all the scriptures for themselves.

  303. And so let us save ourselves from unnecessary pain and seek

  304. to know all that God has to say. That's my prayer.

  305. That's my desire. And I hope that's your desire

  306. for yourself as well, that you would leave this place excited

  307. to know that God speaks through this and that something happens.

  308. The more you discover, the more you inherit, the more that you

  309. glean something happens to you. Let me prove it to you.

  310. This is my last verse. And James, this is one of my

  311. favorite verses concerning the power.

  312. Of the word of God. I quoted often, so forgive me if

  313. you're hearing it again in such a short span of time.

  314. Look at these words from James and James, Chapter One.

  315. And this was where we will sign off for this introduction.

  316. James one and look here with me in verse verse 21.

  317. James 121 therefore put away all filthiness and rampant

  318. wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word

  319. which is able to save your souls.

  320. What is significant charge? Receive the implanted world.

  321. If it's implanted, it's already received, isn't it?

  322. What are you asking me to do, James?

  323. Continue to receive that which you received initially in

  324. salvation. Continue to open up your heart

  325. to indulge and accept and explore what the word of God has

  326. to say, and notice what he says which is able to save your

  327. souls. He's talking to Christians.

  328. What do you mean, save your souls?

  329. You're already saved. Yeah, but there's another saving

  330. that needs to take place. A continual saving, a perpetual

  331. delivering in your life. You know it, right?

  332. You know that when you get saved, you're not instantly made

  333. perfect. Join a local church and you'll

  334. figure that out within a few months.

  335. Nobody is. And yet there is a promise.

  336. There is a guarantee that to the degree that you expose yourself

  337. and receive the word of God, you will know as saving in your own

  338. soul. From trauma, from

  339. disappointment, from sin, from wrong world views, from

  340. temptation, from bondage, from strongholds.

  341. It's the word of God that saves and cleanses and washes and

  342. uproots all the things that perhaps you've had from the

  343. earliest memories of your life. That's the word, and that's what

  344. it can do. So here's one thing that we can

  345. guarantee. Here's one thing that you can

  346. guarantee every single time you go to the word of God for

  347. yourself that you sit under the preach word.

  348. And This is why this weekend is excited.

  349. Because we have a condensed time where you're just going to

  350. receive the word of God as those coming from a fire hydrant.

  351. People are going to be saved. If it's received with meekness,

  352. we will know it's saving. I'm not talking about salvation,

  353. I'm talking about a renewing of the mind.

  354. I'm talking about a redirecting in your affections.

  355. I'm talking about an empowerment that will make you leave this

  356. place stronger than you came in. That's what the Word of God can

  357. do. And we're going to see it

  358. through Jesus saying something greater than Solomon is here.

  359. What does that mean, Lord? We're going to figure it out

  360. together. Let's pray, Father, we give you

  361. glory even from the opening night.

  362. Thank you for the joy in this place.

  363. Thank you for the openness in the hearts of every soul in this

  364. House. Thank you, Lord, for people who

  365. decided to take up this weekend. Though it might be a difficult

  366. weekend in the year to dedicate few days to be with God's people

  367. and to seek the God of these people.

  368. We asked, Lord, that we would know the very saving that you

  369. promised in James that we would know a new ambition to have a

  370. complete grasp, a growing grasp with the word of God, so that we

  371. would be rescued from unnecessary sorrows.

  372. And, Lord, we asked from the beginning that by the power of

  373. your Holy Spirit you would open our eyes to behold how Christ,

  374. your Son, is greater than that great man's Solomon.

  375. It may cause us to give him the worship and the honor and the

  376. praise that the King of Kings rightly deserves.

  377. Lord, bless our hearts, our minds, protect us from head to

  378. toe. Let everything about this

  379. weekend, from the messages to the singing, to the activities

  380. to the eating. May it all be led by your

  381. spirit. May we sense your presence

  382. wherever we go, for we are here for you above all else.

  383. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

  384. Amen. Amen.
