  1. I'm really excited to introduce our preacher, speaker to you this morning.

  2. Mike Lilly, Michael Lilly, is one of my dearest friends.

  3. And we served together at King of Grace Church, which eventually sent us both out to plant churches.

  4. So we've planted Trinity Cambridge Church in Cambridge, and Mike's planted King of Peace Church in Salem, Massachusetts.

  5. A lifetime before that, Mike was a lieutenant colonel in the army.

  6. He served there for a while. He's still a highly coveted instructor.

  7. But he gave all of that up so that he can serve Jesus by preaching the gospel.

  8. And he's a man who has personally experienced God's grace in his life in a radical way.

  9. And because of that, he very effectively ministers God's grace to others,

  10. those who are in need, all of us as sinners in need.

  11. And Mike's a man of prayer.

  12. And we had him come, and he actually preached to us, taught us about prayer a few years ago, actually,

  13. when we were still at Kennedy Longfellow School in East Cambridge.

  14. And so this is his second time I guess preaching for, it's been a little while.

  15. But yeah, so probably a lot of you guys don't recognize him,

  16. but I'm really glad that you guys get to meet him today.

  17. So Mike is married to his wife Enza, who serves as a doula.

  18. So their service usually meets in the afternoon.

  19. And so Mike was able to come preach for us.

  20. But Enza had other commitments.

  21. That's why she's not here with him this morning.

  22. He's married. He's got three sons.

  23. He's got three girls. He's got three sons.

  24. And it's wonderful to have you to preach for us.

  25. Thank you, Mike.

  26. So please come up. Let's welcome Mike to come preach for us.

  27. Thank you.

  28. Thank you.

  29. Well, greetings to you from your brothers and sisters in Christ in Salem.

  30. And it's good to be here together with you today.

  31. I just can't say how excited I am.

  32. I remember coming here years ago and walking the streets and praying with Sean before there was any of you here.

  33. So it's really cool to look out and see this today.

  34. You know, the work that God has done building his church.

  35. Amen?

  36. So 20 years ago, I was still in the Army.

  37. And during that time, performance counseling was really a part of my professional life.

  38. Now, I liked my soldiers.

  39. In fact, I love videos.

  40. I love my soldiers.

  41. I liked what I did a lot.

  42. And sometimes you had to go, oh, you had to do counseling, whether it was good or bad.

  43. Right?

  44. Well, even in the stuff where I knew I was going to get a negative counseling, where I really needed to correct where we were going,

  45. I always tried to start off with the positive things that I saw about the soldiers that I was counseling.

  46. I wanted to know.

  47. I wanted to know that I saw things that made me hopeful for their future.

  48. So as we move today at the first nine verses of 1 Corinthians, we see Paul doing something pretty similar to that as he writes the church in Corinth.

  49. See, between a letter that he had received from the church in Corinth, one that we don't have, and a personal report that he had received from one of the house churches, Paul's gotten some really disturbing news about the church in Corinth.

  50. So in response, he's sending one of his most comprehensive correction letters that we have probably in the New Testament.

  51. Yet, unlike the counseling that I conducted with my soldiers that kind of grounded them in the faith that I had for them,

  52. Paul starts 1 Corinthians chapter 1 verses 1 through 9 by grounding the believers in God's faithfulness.

    1 Corinthians 1:1–9

  53. He points them to the good things that God has faithfully done on their behalf and how he has seen the results of those good things manifested in them.

  54. Paul doesn't move their hope and their ability to do better.

  55. But in God, and in when God is already faithfully done through Jesus Christ.

  56. And how God will sustain them until Jesus returns.

  57. So please, turn in your barbers to 1 Corinthians 1, 1 through 9, and follow along as I read.

  58. Paul writes,

  59. Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus and a brother of South Carolina.

  60. To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus,

  61. called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  62. both their Lord and ours.

  63. grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  64. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus,

  65. that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge,

  66. even as the testimony about Christ was delivered among you,

  67. so that you are not lacking in any care,

  68. as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  69. who will sustain you to the end,

  70. guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  71. God is faithful.

  72. God is faithful.

  73. By whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son,

  74. Jesus Christ,

  75. our Lord.

  76. May God bless the reading and the hearing and the preaching of his Holy Word.

  77. Father, this week,

  78. may you send your Holy Spirit to bring these words to recall

  79. and would encourage your people by the knowledge that they are called by you.

  80. They are being holy in Christ,

  81. and they are sustained guiltless.

  82. Until Christ on the time.

  83. Father,

  84. ask today,

  85. in your spirit,

  86. and let your word go out

  87. and run forward.

  88. That's your promise.

  89. Lord,

  90. empower the preaching of your word today

  91. as you have prepared to receive it.

  92. We pray that in the name of your Son.

  93. Amen.

  94. So,

  95. from this passage this week,

  96. I have one simple thought,

  97. I guess,

  98. that I want you to walk away with.

  99. And that is,

  100. God is faithful.

  101. He will call you,

  102. to sanctify you,

  103. and to sustain you,

  104. who trust in the Lord Jesus.

  105. I guess we could really just kind of cut that down,

  106. even more simply say,

  107. that God is faithful.

  108. But I like the longer one,

  109. because it sort of has the gospel in a nutshell there, right?

  110. God is able to call,

  111. sanctify,

  112. and sustain all those who believe in Jesus Christ.

  113. So now,

  114. to move that proposition to you today,

  115. I really just want to say,

  116. that God has called you,

  117. and my three points are really,

  118. God has called you,

  119. into the fellowship of His Son.

  120. God has called you,

  121. to be saints,

  122. and God has called you,

  123. into the ministry,

  124. of His Son,

  125. which is Christ.

  126. So let's get started,

  127. with our first point,

  128. that God is faithful to call us.

  129. In this first word,

  130. I want to briefly show you,

  131. three ways,

  132. in which God is faithful to call us.

  133. I want to,

  134. I'll build your faith,

  135. by seeing that God,

  136. has been faithful to you,

  137. faithful to call you,

  138. first,

  139. into the fellowship of His Son,

  140. Jesus.

  141. Second,

  142. to live as saints,

  143. of the Lord Jesus,

  144. and third,

  145. into the ministry of Christ.

  146. Now,

  147. Paul,

  148. in verses 1-9,

  149. begins with ministry,

  150. moves to saints,

  151. and then to fellowship.

  152. But I'm going to do that,

  153. in reverse order,

  154. and we're going to start,

  155. verse 9.

  156. There,

  157. we read,

  158. that God is faithful.

  159. Let me ask you,

  160. who does this verse,

  161. say,

  162. called you and I,

  163. into the fellowship,

  164. of His Son?

  165. Who called you?

  166. God.

  167. It was God.

  168. It was God that fought.

  169. And as we consider this passage,

  170. the first thing we learn,

  171. the first thing we really need,

  172. to hold on to,

  173. is it is God,

  174. who is faithful,

  175. to call us,

  176. not we,

  177. ourselves.

  178. It is God,

  179. who is faithful.

  180. We have not called ourselves,

  181. into this fellowship,

  182. of Jesus,

  183. with God.

  184. But,

  185. God,

  186. was faithful,

  187. to do this,

  188. while you and I,

  189. were still enemies.

  190. But,

  191. where were you,

  192. when you caught,

  193. called us?

  194. Stop the thing about that,

  195. where were you,

  196. when God called you?

  197. Most of you,

  198. were probably not,

  199. saved in childhood.

  200. You can go,

  201. thank God,

  202. that I had a grave,

  203. before you.

  204. But I bet,

  205. a bunch of people are not.

  206. I was 30,

  207. when I was called,

  208. and I was eight,

  209. in a full-out spirit,

  210. away from God.

  211. I wanted nothing,

  212. to do with God.

  213. I experienced a church,

  214. when I was living,

  215. and I wanted nothing,

  216. to do with that.

  217. But God,

  218. but God,

  219. was faithful,

  220. even while I,

  221. was still living in sin,

  222. following my own desires,

  223. following the course,

  224. of my own way.

  225. He,

  226. called,

  227. me,

  228. into fellowship,

  229. with his son.

  230. I,

  231. God,

  232. faithfully called me,

  233. bore the foundations of your,

  234. pursued me,

  235. with his relentless love.

  236. He,

  237. sent,

  238. his Holy Spirit,

  239. to open my eyes,

  240. and even gave me,

  241. the faith to believe,

  242. because I couldn't even do that.

  243. So,

  244. so let's,

  245. all,

  246. see,

  247. that this is,

  248. God's,

  249. work,

  250. not ours.

  251. It is God,

  252. that is faithful,

  253. to do it.

  254. It is God,

  255. who is faithful,

  256. to call us,

  257. into the fellowship,

  258. of his son.

  259. And friends,

  260. God,

  261. has,

  262. faithfully,

  263. called you,

  264. into a relationship,

  265. with his son.

  266. But it's more,

  267. than just a relationship.

  268. So you're called into the fellowship,

  269. of Jesus.

  270. And the word,

  271. fellowship,

  272. is important.

  273. In our current context,

  274. we talk about fellowship,

  275. and,

  276. you know,

  277. it kind of sounds like,

  278. off and go,

  279. not a little chit-chat,

  280. after church.

  281. Jesus didn't die,

  282. he didn't have chit-chat,

  283. after church.

  284. These are why God sent his son,

  285. to say,

  286. maybe,

  287. you're familiar,

  288. with,

  289. J.R.

  290. R. Trump's,

  291. trilogy,

  292. the fellowship,

  293. of the ring,

  294. maybe,

  295. Friday,

  296. maybe,

  297. or maybe,

  298. just a word,

  299. but,

  300. but,

  301. the point is,

  302. that there's this trilogy,

  303. out there,

  304. and it's called,

  305. the fellowship,

  306. of the ring.

  307. Fellowship is kind of,

  308. a noun in that,

  309. right?

  310. And,

  311. what he's talking about,

  312. is,

  313. these nine,

  314. companions,

  315. who are brought,

  316. together,

  317. to accomplish,

  318. something,

  319. right?

  320. These,

  321. they're on this quest,

  322. to destroy the ring,

  323. the fellowship,

  324. that they had entered,

  325. was full,

  326. of danger.

  327. It was hard,

  328. it was costly,

  329. people would die,

  330. from the ring.

  331. That's much more like,

  332. fellowship,

  333. also going after.

  334. In the original language,

  335. the noun,

  336. fellowship,

  337. is referring to,

  338. a legal,

  339. and binding,

  340. partnership,

  341. between two,

  342. other people,

  343. excused in terms,

  344. sometimes,

  345. of marriage,

  346. and it's often used,

  347. in business contracts,

  348. and I'm repeating,

  349. for example,

  350. Peter,

  351. and James,

  352. and John,

  353. and Luke,

  354. and I,

  355. where they are,

  356. in partnership,

  357. in this,

  358. in this fishing business,

  359. that they're in.

  360. And if you think about that,

  361. it's a financial partnership,

  362. with them,

  363. but it was a partnership,

  364. of blood,

  365. and sweat,

  366. equity,

  367. right?

  368. And then they failed,

  369. and you didn't bring,

  370. cats,

  371. and what happened?

  372. You went hungry,

  373. your family went hungry.

  374. So you put everything,

  375. you had,

  376. in making this thing work.

  377. It was costly.

  378. So,

  379. think of the people,

  380. in your term,

  381. right here,

  382. in your book,

  383. you are called,

  384. into the eternal,

  385. fellowship,

  386. of God's,

  387. Son,

  388. Jesus,

  389. your God,

  390. our Lord,

  391. your Lord,

  392. God.

  393. And you're called,

  394. into that fellowship,

  395. with these people,

  396. whose lives,

  397. are bound up,

  398. with yours,

  399. in Christ.

  400. You are to,

  401. partner with Jesus,

  402. as it goes,

  403. this church,

  404. not just,

  405. as a individual,

  406. but as members,

  407. who are,

  408. partner,

  409. partner,

  410. and,

  411. partner,

  412. and,

  413. partner.

  414. Let me stop,

  415. just a minute.

  416. And what I want you to do,

  417. is you look at the person,

  418. to your left,

  419. right?

  420. Is there anybody,

  421. in your left,

  422. right?

  423. Do you see a parent,

  424. right?

  425. Somebody.

  426. You've got one,

  427. on one,

  428. the other,

  429. right?

  430. And now,

  431. I want you to look at that person,

  432. on your left,

  433. on your right,

  434. and say,

  435. we are in partnership,

  436. with Jesus,

  437. together.

  438. And here,

  439. look at that person,

  440. we are in partnership,

  441. with Jesus,

  442. together.

  443. Good.

  444. Good.

  445. Good.

  446. God is faithful,

  447. to put you,

  448. into that partnership,

  449. with his son,

  450. together.

  451. Amen.

  452. So the second thing,

  453. that God has,

  454. Paul was into,

  455. is in verse 2.

  456. And there we see,

  457. that we are called,

  458. to be saints,

  459. as those,

  460. whom God has called,

  461. into the fellowship,

  462. of his son Jesus.

  463. Paul wants to make sure,

  464. that the Corinthians,

  465. and I think us today,

  466. know,

  467. that God,

  468. has also,

  469. called us,

  470. to be,

  471. saints.

  472. That,

  473. we didn't call ourselves,

  474. to be saints,

  475. I guarantee you.

  476. God has,

  477. called us,

  478. to be saints.

  479. So let me ask you,

  480. did God,

  481. call you,

  482. into the fellowship,

  483. of his son Jesus,

  484. because you,

  485. were holy.

  486. You were holy,

  487. before you were called,

  488. please raise your hand.

  489. There's the door,

  490. in the back,

  491. because you don't want it.

  492. No,

  493. seriously.

  494. God did not,

  495. call you,

  496. because you,

  497. were holy.

  498. He didn't look down,

  499. from heaven,

  500. and say,

  501. oh,

  502. that went there.

  503. She is,

  504. so holy.

  505. She is,

  506. so righteous.

  507. Come on,

  508. girl.

  509. No,

  510. it isn't,

  511. what happened.

  512. Not at all.

  513. This isn't,

  514. like a modern,

  515. day law,

  516. from the little view,

  517. and says,

  518. wow,

  519. that person has prestige,

  520. their holy,

  521. bring them on,

  522. because they're built,

  523. a prestige,

  524. and well,

  525. not for,

  526. that didn't have that work.

  527. That is not,

  528. at all,

  529. for the world.

  530. You never have,

  531. to prove yourself,

  532. because God,

  533. has already,

  534. done it for you.

  535. God,

  536. is the one,

  537. who made you faithful,

  538. through his son,

  539. Jesus Christ.

  540. And it is God,

  541. who has called you,

  542. to be,

  543. saints.

  544. Come,

  545. through the Lord,

  546. Jesus Christ.

  547. So let's take a minute,

  548. to explore this last thing,

  549. a little further.

  550. Paul makes a single,

  551. profound statement,

  552. in verse 2,

  553. he addresses this letter,

  554. to the church,

  555. of God,

  556. in Corinth,

  557. to those sanctified,

  558. in Christ Jesus.

  559. What does that mean?

  560. What does it mean,

  561. that God has,

  562. sanctified us,

  563. in Christ Jesus?

  564. Well,

  565. let's start with that word,

  566. sanctified.

  567. The word,

  568. sanctified,

  569. means,

  570. you make something,

  571. holy,

  572. right?

  573. Dramatically,

  574. Paul is using,

  575. the perfect tense here,

  576. which means that,

  577. something has been,

  578. accomplished,

  579. in the past,

  580. but it has,

  581. ongoing,

  582. effects.

  583. You have been,

  584. made holy,

  585. and you are still,

  586. holy.

  587. Now I know,

  588. the things I think,

  589. I know the things I do,

  590. I know,

  591. there's a reason,

  592. like,

  593. that's it.

  594. Right?

  595. There's a reason for it,

  596. it's not because,

  597. I'm living,

  598. holy,

  599. right?

  600. I'm not,

  601. perfectly,

  602. righteous,

  603. in my daily law.

  604. So how can I be,

  605. more of you?

  606. Well,

  607. a little roundabout way here,

  608. but what did,

  609. John 3,

  610. 16?

  611. For God so loved the world,

  612. that He gave His only Son,

  613. that whoever believes in Him,

  614. should not perish,

  615. but have a total life.

  616. what does Jesus mean when He says that?

  617. What does He mean when He says that God gave His Son?

  618. Jesus was referring to the fact that God had sent Him to earth to live a perfect life,

  619. so that He could be given as a perfect sacrifice for everyone who believes in Him.

  620. But that begs the question,

  621. why do He need me a sacrifice?

  622. And the answer is that you and I have a problem.

  623. God has made laws and given commands,

  624. and you and I,

  625. intentionally or unintentionally,

  626. have broken those laws.

  627. We have thumbed our noses at God,

  628. and done whatever we wanted to do.

  629. Well,

  630. Romans 6, 26 reminds us

  631. that you can do that,

  632. but there is a penalty for that.

  633. There's a penalty for breaking God's laws.

  634. And like a person who,

  635. yes,

  636. there are people who,

  637. and oh,

  638. because our hearts are placed that I shouldn't necessarily be,

  639. I hope that doesn't happen in the other way,

  640. there's a penalty,

  641. right?

  642. Because I've done that,

  643. I could get ticketed,

  644. and I could get towed.

  645. And just because I didn't see a sign,

  646. doesn't make me innocent.

  647. The problem is that when we break God's laws,

  648. we just don't get ticketed and towed.

  649. We get a penalty.

  650. And even worse,

  651. every human being that has walked the face of the earth,

  652. has broken God's laws and faces.

  653. That's the penalty.

  654. But God,

  655. God is compassionate,

  656. merciful,

  657. fell with steadfast love and faithfulness.

  658. He knew humanity could not get out of the mess

  659. that was created by Adam and Eve.

  660. So,

  661. he sent his son,

  662. Jesus.

  663. He gave Jesus to be a sacrifice in a new place,

  664. to pay our price,

  665. to pay a price in our place.

  666. To die for our sin,

  667. to face our punishment,

  668. to be an offering that established peace between God and us.

  669. Yet,

  670. before Jesus could live,

  671. before he could be a perfect sacrifice,

  672. he had to live a perfect life.

  673. Right?

  674. So,

  675. Jesus had to live a life that was declared righteous and holy before God,

  676. by following God's laws perfectly.

  677. And he did that.

  678. Jesus did live a life before God that was perfect,

  679. and God did declare him holy and righteous.

  680. And when he had to live that life,

  681. to the point that was necessary,

  682. God sent his son to the cross,

  683. where the sin of every believer was placed on Jesus.

  684. Then God,

  685. the Bible,

  686. put his son to death.

  687. In doing that,

  688. Jesus became a sacrifice on our behalf.

  689. He completely paid for all of our sins.

  690. Every command,

  691. every law,

  692. that you have ever broken,

  693. ever will break,

  694. past, present, future,

  695. in mind,

  696. in heart,

  697. in physical form,

  698. all of it,

  699. painful,

  700. done,

  701. been gone.

  702. Let's come back.

  703. Right?

  704. So what does that mean for you and I?

  705. It means that,

  706. that when you and I face our faith,

  707. gave Jesus as our Savior,

  708. we are saying that,

  709. that we believe,

  710. Jesus paid the price for all of our sins,

  711. but he died on the belt.

  712. All of my wrongdoing,

  713. right?

  714. Even the things I haven't thought about doing that,

  715. which I really agree with you.

  716. There's a lot of them.

  717. That makes us sinless before God,

  718. which is great.

  719. We need that.

  720. But we are made holy by living sins before God.

  721. So God doesn't stop at forgiving all of our sins

  722. without our starvation.

  723. He places us in Christ,

  724. right?

  725. He transfers that perfect life that Christ lived,

  726. and he, like,

  727. puts it on to us.

  728. We call it you,

  729. but,

  730. then he,

  731. I don't need to talk.

  732. It means that he put it on to us,

  733. right?

  734. It became ours.

  735. The perfectly righteous life of Christ became mine.

  736. I'm clothed in the righteousness of Christ.

  737. I'm hidden in Christ.

  738. Just as if I had been in that perfect life.

  739. And because of that,

  740. we are declared holy.

  741. I am both sinless and the heaven,

  742. and the perfectly righteous life before God.

  743. In Jesus Christ,

  744. we are declared being made,

  745. fully,

  746. through Jesus.

  747. You have been sanctified,

  748. completed action,

  749. done.

  750. Now,

  751. let me give you,

  752. I can give you a view of these,

  753. but let me give you just one proof,

  754. one proof,

  755. of why I am sure that as a believer,

  756. God has sanctified you as a completed action.

  757. I know that we are declared holy for God,

  758. because when we saved Jesus,

  759. God does not,

  760. when I'm saved by Jesus,

  761. right?

  762. When I'm raised by Jesus,

  763. God loves me with his Holy Spirit.

  764. He went,

  765. uh-uh,

  766. God loves me,

  767. God loves me.

  768. I'm not trying to find you.

  769. Okay,

  770. think about it for just a second.

  771. You are filled with the presence of God.

  772. Jesus,

  773. but,

  774. do you know what happened in the Old Testament?

  775. When you came into the presence of the living,

  776. God,

  777. and you weren't,

  778. okay,

  779. think about it,

  780. think about it.

  781. It goes on,

  782. right?

  783. The parents are,

  784. the parents are,

  785. the parents are,

  786. the parents are,

  787. the parents are,

  788. right?

  789. The other guy,

  790. right?

  791. The Mark starts to fall,

  792. and so well,

  793. people are thinking he's doing the right thing.

  794. Reach his head.

  795. Presence of God.

  796. Think about it.

  797. Dude,

  798. he died.

  799. He fell over,

  800. dead.

  801. Actually,

  802. he cried.

  803. I don't know,

  804. but he was dead.

  805. What happened in the temple

  806. when the high priest ran,

  807. before the Holy Ghost,

  808. did all this stuff,

  809. and then they died,

  810. where both wanted his wood

  811. so they could cry

  812. and body out

  813. in case he wasn't.

  814. Because he was about to experience

  815. the presence of God.

  816. All right,

  817. maybe that's not making me think.

  818. Here's what I'm like.

  819. if you are a believer,

  820. raise your hand.

  821. If you're not,

  822. that's okay.

  823. But if you're a believer,

  824. raise your hand.

  825. Okay, good.

  826. Now,

  827. how many of you

  828. are believers,

  829. now there's no answer,

  830. how many of you believe

  831. that you're filled

  832. with the Holy Spirit?

  833. Raise your hand.

  834. Good.

  835. That's wonderful.

  836. I'm very excited.

  837. That's a very exciting shot.

  838. Okay.

  839. Any of you physically dead

  840. who just raise your hand?

  841. Oh, good.

  842. I hate talking.

  843. So I'm really glad

  844. to be here today

  845. and that you're alive

  846. and you're filled

  847. with the Holy Spirit,

  848. which tells me

  849. you must be sanctified.

  850. You must be declared

  851. perfectly holy

  852. because the presence

  853. of God dwells in you.

  854. Amen?

  855. Don't you see me going,

  856. oh my gosh,

  857. I can't believe this is true.

  858. The power of the living God

  859. resides in you.

  860. That's amazing.

  861. Amen.

  862. Okay.

  863. Let me finish up

  864. this second point

  865. by saying that God

  866. has made you holy

  867. though to be holy.

  868. Right?

  869. It's not just that

  870. He's a good one

  871. to hang out

  872. while they're in order

  873. or do nice chit-chat.

  874. No, He's called you

  875. to be holy,

  876. to be saints.

  877. God has sanctified you

  878. even as He did

  879. with the Corinthians

  880. and all those

  881. who have ever believed

  882. in Jesus Christ

  883. so that you can be saints.

  884. so that you can go out

  885. with this.

  886. So that you can do this

  887. among one another.

  888. God has given you

  889. everything you need

  890. to be saints.

  891. He has declared you

  892. holy in Christ Jesus.

  893. He has filled you

  894. with His Spirit

  895. to show you

  896. how as saints

  897. you,

  898. you,

  899. you can do this.

  900. He gives you the power

  901. to say no to sin

  902. and yes to righteousness.

  903. This is what we're

  904. talking about

  905. in the saints,

  906. right?

  907. This is the testimony

  908. of Jesus in you.

  909. You're living this out.

  910. These gifts

  911. working within you.

  912. You have the Holy Spirit

  913. in you.

  914. You are a new preacher.

  915. You've been transformed.

  916. This is the testimony

  917. of Christ in you.

  918. So as saints,

  919. we're a good picture

  920. of what it means

  921. to be,

  922. to be with Jesus

  923. and to the world

  924. around us.

  925. Right?

  926. We're going to be saints

  927. to our spouses,

  928. to our significant others.

  929. We're going to be saints

  930. to our children.

  931. We're going to be saints

  932. to our employers

  933. and our clients,

  934. to our neighbors

  935. and our parents

  936. who are not the tougher.

  937. To our fellow brothers

  938. and sisters in Christ.

  939. So is that how you're thinking

  940. about the way God

  941. has called you to live?

  942. Are you thinking

  943. about actively,

  944. thinking actively

  945. that you are

  946. a human picture

  947. of what it would be like

  948. to be with Jesus?

  949. That's crazy,

  950. but that's what it means

  951. to be saints.

  952. That's what we're calling

  953. what God called us to do.

  954. That's the sanctified.

  955. So let me encourage you,

  956. church,

  957. that same power

  958. that raised Jesus

  959. from the dead

  960. is the same power

  961. at work

  962. from day to day

  963. to live as a man.

  964. The same power

  965. that raised Jesus

  966. from the dead

  967. that is the same power

  968. at work in you

  969. to help you live this way.

  970. That's exciting.

  971. You don't have to do this

  972. on your own

  973. to be in the spirit

  974. because you knew

  975. you would.

  976. That's why we're

  977. raised.

  978. That's why we're

  979. not raised.

  980. All right.

  981. God has faithfully

  982. called us

  983. into the fellowship

  984. with the Son.

  985. God has sanctified us

  986. and called us

  987. to be saints

  988. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  989. And then he calls us

  990. into the ministry

  991. of Christ Jesus.

  992. So let's turn to

  993. our third point

  994. that God has faithfully

  995. called us

  996. into the ministry

  997. of the Son.

  998. In his introduction,

  999. Paul identifies himself

  1000. as an apostle

  1001. of Christ Jesus

  1002. called by the

  1003. will of God.

1004. Now what I am hoping

  1005. to see,

  1006. what Paul is making

  1007. plain,

  1008. is that this also

1009. is not of his own

  1010. doing.

  1011. He is not

  1012. a self-declared

  1013. apostle.

1014. Now if you grew up

  1015. in North Carolina

  1016. and South Carolina,

  1017. there are a lot

  1018. of self-declared

  1019. apostles.

  1020. Let me tell you,

  1021. there may not be

  1022. anybody else

  1023. in that church,

  1024. but he's preaching

  1025. every Sunday

  1026. and is an apostle

  1027. of his church.

  1028. I love it.

  1029. God bless him.

  1030. He is not,

  1031. the Paul is not

  1032. a self-declared apostle.

1033. It is by the will of God

1034. and the will of God

  1035. who met him

  1036. on the way

  1037. to Damascus.

  1038. While Paul was set

  1039. on destroying the church,

  1040. God had other plans.

  1041. God made the Paul,

  1042. Paul,

  1043. out of his previous

  1044. way of life

  1045. and into the fellowship

  1046. of his son,

  1047. Jesus.

  1048. God made the Paul

  1049. did all that was

  1050. necessary for Paul

  1051. to be declared

  1052. holy and righteous.

  1053. And then he called

1054. Paul to be a saint

  1055. and loved with all

  1056. those who believed

1057. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1058. Yet God also made

  1059. Paul into ministry

  1060. and he gave him

  1061. gifts.

  1062. gifts.

  1063. He gave him gifts

  1064. like preaching

  1065. and teaching

  1066. and evangelism

  1067. and leadership

  1068. and serving.

  1069. God made Paul

  1070. an apostle.

  1071. Amen?

  1072. Not Paul.

  1073. Church,

  1074. ministry is not just

  1075. what your pastor does.

  1076. And I'm sure

  1077. he's taught through that.

  1078. It's not just

  1079. what your pastor does.

  1080. Paul will go on

  1081. later in chapters 12

  1082. and 13

1083. to talk about the gifts

  1084. that God has given

  1085. for the building

  1086. of the church.

  1087. And he's talking

  1088. to the church.

  1089. Remember the intro?

1090. This is to the church,

1091. not just to the elders

  1092. of the church.

1093. This is all of them.

  1094. All of us.

  1095. God has given gifts

  1096. for the building

  1097. of the church.

  1098. It's so that you

  1099. and I

  1100. and be ministers

  1101. and minister

  1102. to one another

  1103. using the gifts

  1104. that God has given

1105. so that we are all

  1106. strengthened

  1107. and encouraged,

  1108. corrected,

  1109. exhorted,

  1110. built up in love

  1111. until we all reach

  1112. full maturity

  1113. to have an integral

1114. part of what it means

  1115. to be the church.

  1116. that's why we call

  1117. the fellowship.

  1118. You're entered

  1119. into a partnership

  1120. because each

  1121. will be given

  1122. all these special things

  1123. that are uniquely

  1124. joined together.

  1125. And if you are

  1126. an active member

  1127. of the partnership,

  1128. we all

  1129. are blessed.

  1130. Friends,

  1131. God has been

  1132. faithful to call you

  1133. into this fellowship,

1134. but he didn't stop there.

  1135. He called you

  1136. to live together

  1137. and see.

  1138. That's the Holy Consum

  1139. to you.

  1140. I can't believe it.

1141. And then he gave you,

  1142. he called you

  1143. into ministry,

  1144. he gave you

  1145. the gifts

  1146. necessary

  1147. to do.

  1148. He didn't just ask

  1149. you to do that

  1150. to stick with all

  1151. you in ministry

  1152. and left you alone.

  1153. He's given you,

  1154. has given you

  1155. all the gifts

  1156. you need.

  1157. But do the ministry

  1158. and that's all.

  1159. And I don't care

  1160. about service

  1161. and hospitality

  1162. or prophecy

  1163. and teaching

  1164. from one end

  1165. to the other

  1166. of those gifts.

  1167. In one sense,

1168. we need all of them

  1169. to be the church.

  1170. And he's faithfully

  1171. given you

  1172. these gifts

  1173. that body

  1174. can be built up.

  1175. God,

  1176. God,

  1177. and faithful

  1178. calls us

  1179. and has given us

  1180. everything we need

  1181. to be in

  1182. the partnership

  1183. of his son.

  1184. Let me challenge you

  1185. this week

  1186. to evaluate

  1187. how you see

  1188. your relationship

  1189. with Jesus

  1190. and with one another.

  1191. Are you living

  1192. like a whole member

  1193. of the partnership?

  1194. Take some time

  1195. this week

  1196. to consider

  1197. what would it

  1198. look like

  1199. for me to be

  1200. a full member

  1201. of this partnership?

  1202. What needs

  1203. to change

  1204. in life?

  1205. Then ask God

1206. to help you do that.

  1207. If you need

  1208. to repent,

  1209. do that.

  1210. Because sometimes

  1211. it's a sin issue,

  1212. right?

  1213. So if you need

  1214. to repent,

  1215. then receive mercy,

  1216. receive grace,

1217. and then with God's help

  1218. seek to live

  1219. differently.

  1220. Now,

  1221. I realize I've covered

  1222. a lot

  1223. with some of you

  1224. even for me,

  1225. and

  1226. this can seem

  1227. rather daunting

  1228. than just sort of

  1229. laid out.

1230. So let me give you

  1231. some courage

  1232. right here

  1233. that God

  1234. has not

  1235. just done

  1236. all of this

  1237. in the past.

  1238. He left you

  1239. on your own

  1240. now

  1241. and figure it out.

  1242. See,

  1243. in verse 8,

  1244. we're reminded

  1245. that he also

  1246. sustains

  1247. a

  1248. guilt

  1249. with

  1250. to the end

  1251. for the day

  1252. the Lord

  1253. is when

  1254. he returns.

  1255. Let me give you

  1256. quickly three ways

  1257. in which God

  1258. shows

  1259. the Corinthians

  1260. and us today

  1261. how God

  1262. is faithful

  1263. to sustain

  1264. us

  1265. for the day

  1266. of our

  1267. will be.

  1268. First,

  1269. let me press

  1270. the point

  1271. that

  1272. part of

  1273. God's

  1274. means

  1275. of

  1276. sustaining

  1277. us

  1278. is what

  1279. we've already

  1280. spoken about

  1281. in the first

  1282. of the points,

  1283. that God

  1284. has faithfully

  1285. called us

  1286. into fellowship

  1287. and

  1288. as we know

  1289. from John 10,

  1290. if he's called

  1291. you into the fellowship,

  1292. nothing will

  1293. snatch you out

  1294. of his hand.

  1295. It's a done deal.

  1296. We've also seen

  1297. that he has

  1298. sanctified us

  1299. in Christ Jesus.

  1300. We've seen that

  1301. as a completed action

  1302. with uncle

  1303. and in fact

  1304. the music of the

  1305. Holy Spirit

  1306. is now in you

  1307. actively working

  1308. with your victims

  1309. and to guide you

  1310. into the future

  1311. so you know

  1312. how to live

  1313. and to be more

  1314. like Jesus each day,

  1315. sustaining,

  1316. literally sustaining

  1317. guiltless

  1318. until Christ

  1319. returns.

  1320. Yet,

  1321. by no means

  1322. that will

  1323. not be

  1324. after

  1325. what he's

  1326. done.

  1327. What God

  1328. is doing

  1329. with faith

  1330. is to stay

  1331. his way.

  1332. God is able

  1333. to stay

  1334. with grace

  1335. and peace.

  1336. Look again

  1337. at Paul's

  1338. reading

  1339. in the

  1340. church

  1341. in verse 3.

  1342. Paul says,

  1343. grace to you

  1344. and peace

  1345. from God

  1346. our Father

  1347. and the Lord

  1348. Jesus Christ.

  1349. Now mercy

  1350. is when you

  1351. get what

  1352. we don't

  1353. get what

  1354. we earned

  1355. or deserve.

  1356. We don't

  1357. get what

  1358. we earned

  1359. or deserve

  1360. or breaking

  1361. God's goals

  1362. which would

  1363. be

  1364. death.

  1365. Grace,

  1366. though,

  1367. is when

  1368. God gives

  1369. us what

  1370. we did

  1371. not deserve.

  1372. What we

  1373. did not deserve.

  1374. Life.

  1375. Eternal life.

  1376. Moreover,

  1377. eternal life

  1378. Christ Jesus

  1379. and it is

  1380. a grace

  1381. upon grace

  1382. John was

  1383. saying

  1384. in the first

  1385. chapter.

  1386. Consider

  1387. that he

  1388. adopts you

  1389. as his

  1390. sons and

  1391. daughters

  1392. and makes

  1393. you co-heirs

  1394. of Jesus

  1395. and in

  1396. Christ

  1397. God calls

  1398. you beloved.

  1399. Grace

  1400. upon grace.

  1401. Brothers and

  1402. sisters,

  1403. God extends

  1404. grace to his

  1405. gang out of

  1406. the gang

  1407. and through

  1408. Jesus he

  1409. says,

  1410. come boldly

  1411. before my

  1412. throne

  1413. with mercy

  1414. and grace

  1415. to receive

  1416. mercy

  1417. and grace

  1418. at the

  1419. time of

  1420. me.

  1421. In Jesus

  1422. we come

  1423. as his

  1424. loved

  1425. children

  1426. and we

  1427. make our

  1428. request

  1429. to know

  1430. we don't

  1431. need to be

  1432. anxious about

  1433. anything.

  1434. Matthew 7

  1435. tells us

  1436. that God

  1437. knows what

  1438. we need.

  1439. Come,

  1440. come,

  1441. come with

  1442. all those

  1443. angels and

  1444. thoughts,

  1445. come with

  1446. all those

  1447. birds.

  1448. Jesus is

  1449. my bird

  1450. and

  1451. not me.

  1452. Come,

  1453. put him

  1454. on me.

  1455. God is

  1456. there to

  1457. bless us,

  1458. to give

  1459. us his

  1460. mercy and

  1461. grace in

  1462. our time

  1463. of being.

  1464. God already

  1465. knows what

  1466. you need

  1467. in God

  1468. and he's

  1469. faithful to

  1470. sustain us.

  1471. He even

  1472. pursues us,

  1473. Psalm 23

  1474. tells us,

  1475. pursues us

  1476. with goodness

  1477. and mercy,

  1478. pursues you

  1479. with me.

  1480. He sustains us

  1481. for those

  1482. living in Christ

  1483. who is our

  1484. mediator,

  1485. interceding for

  1486. us,

  1487. for the

  1488. throne

  1489. of God

  1490. each day.

  1491. Jesus is

  1492. at peace

  1493. with God.

  1494. He stands

  1495. when the

  1496. enemy comes

  1497. to condemn

  1498. us to

  1499. God's

  1500. throne.

  1501. Jesus

  1502. stands up.

  1503. He holds

  1504. up his

  1505. hand,

  1506. that nail

  1507. scarred

  1508. hand,

  1509. of his

  1510. name,

  1511. he's

  1512. engraved

  1513. and he

  1514. says,

  1515. this one

  1516. is mine.

  1517. He pulls

  1518. over his

  1519. shirt,

  1520. it's written

  1521. on my

  1522. heart,

  1523. their name

  1524. right there,

  1525. this one

  1526. is mine,

  1527. this one

  1528. I shed

  1529. my blood

  1530. for,

  1531. they are

  1532. blood

  1533. bombs.

  1534. This one

  1535. is mine.

  1536. Come

  1537. over there,

  1538. it's

  1539. cheating,

  1540. with his

  1541. blood.

  1542. And we

  1543. extend it,

  1544. peace from

  1545. God.

  1546. The Lord

  1547. Jesus Christ

  1548. is to be

  1549. given also

  1550. the shalom

  1551. of God,

  1552. the peace

  1553. of God,

  1554. the extension

  1555. of God's

  1556. will not

  1557. just be

  1558. to thrive,

  1559. but be

  1560. to thrive

  1561. and flourish.

  1562. This is

  1563. God's will

  1564. for you,

  1565. and his

  1566. desire for

  1567. you,

  1568. for you

  1569. to thrive

  1570. and flourish.

  1571. No matter

  1572. what

  1573. your

  1574. understanding

  1575. of life

  1576. will happen,

  1577. to be

  1578. able to

  1579. rest in

  1580. the knowledge

  1581. that you

  1582. will know

  1583. and love

  1584. by God,

  1585. that

  1586. grace

  1587. and peace

  1588. extend

  1589. to you.

  1590. Now I

  1591. could talk

  1592. all day

  1593. about our

  1594. God's

  1595. extension

  1596. with

  1597. wise

  1598. speech

  1599. and

  1600. knowledge

  1601. and

  1602. birth

  1603. and

  1604. testimony

  1605. over

  1606. the

  1607. Holy

  1608. Spirit,

  1609. the

  1610. gifts

  1611. forgiven,

  1612. how he

  1613. keeps you

  1614. every

  1615. spiritual

  1616. gift

  1617. with

  1618. the

  1619. building

  1620. up

  1621. and

  1622. sustaining

  1623. the

  1624. church.

  1625. But let

  1626. me just

  1627. give you

  1628. at the

  1629. end

  1630. here,

  1631. God is

  1632. faithful.

  1633. This is

  1634. faithful.

  1635. Hidden in

  1636. Christ

  1637. Jesus,

  1638. who lived

  1639. a perfect

  1640. life,

  1641. who paid

  1642. for all

  1643. your sins,

  1644. who grew

  1645. him,

  1646. who are

  1647. declared

  1648. righteous

  1649. and holy

  1650. before God

  1651. guiltless

  1652. on the

  1653. day when

  1654. Jesus

  1655. is

  1656. eternal,

  1657. when he

  1658. will judge

  1659. the living

  1660. and the

  1661. dying.

  1662. And friends,

  1663. he is our

  1664. faithful God

  1665. who will

  1666. welcome you.

  1667. Jesus

  1668. looks at

  1669. my

  1670. and says,

  1671. God,

  1672. God,

  1673. could

  1674. have

  1675. been

  1676. to

  1677. him.

  1678. And

  1679. to

  1680. him,

  1681. he is

  1682. faithful.

  1683. Church,

  1684. it's my

  1685. hope

  1686. today

  1687. that he

  1688. is grounded

  1689. in my

  1690. roots

  1691. and the

  1692. life

  1693. that God

  1694. has

  1695. been

  1696. built

  1697. in

  1698. faith.

  1699. God's

  1700. faithfulness

  1701. did not

  1702. ever

  1703. depend

  1704. on you.

  1705. The truth

  1706. is that

  1707. God

  1708. knew

  1709. he

  1710. before

  1711. the

  1712. foundations

  1713. of the

  1714. earth

  1715. and

  1716. set

  1717. his

  1718. love

  1719. upon

  1720. you.

  1721. God

  1722. has

  1723. been

  1724. faithful

  1725. to

  1726. call

  1727. you

  1728. a

  1729. sanctifier

  1730. and

  1731. sustain

  1732. the

  1733. guiltless

  1734. of you.

  1735. The

  1736. day

  1737. is

  1738. done

  1739. and

  1740. be

  1741. done.

  1742. Amen.
