  1. I hate to break it off when you guys are having such a good time enjoying one another's company,

  2. but let's turn in our Bibles to Exodus.

  3. We're back in Exodus today, chapter 5, starting in verse 1.

  4. We'll go all the way to chapter 6, verse 9.

  5. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  6. Heavenly Father, just as you revealed yourself to Moses,

  7. and to Israel,

  8. we know that today you are revealing more of yourself to us from your Word.

  9. So we incline our ears and our hearts to you.

  10. Show us that you are the faithful God,

  11. the God who is with us,

  12. the God who is completely trustworthy,

  13. even when every circumstance seems to indicate otherwise.

  14. Renew our faith in you and our love for you.

  15. In Jesus' name we pray.

  16. Amen.

  17. Exodus chapter 5.

    Exodus 5 chapter mention

  18. Afterward, Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh,

  19. Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,

  20. Let my people go,

  21. that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.

  22. But Pharaoh said,

  23. Who is the Lord,

  24. that I should obey his voice and let Israel go?

  25. I do not know the Lord.

  26. And moreover, I will not let Israel go.

  27. Then they said,

  28. The God of the Hebrews has met with us.

  29. Please let us go a three days journey into the wilderness,

  30. that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God,

  31. lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.

  32. But the king of Egypt said to them,

  33. Moses and Aaron,

  34. Why do you take the people away from their work?

  35. Get back to your burdens.

  36. And Pharaoh said,

  37. Behold, the people of the land are now many,

  38. and you make them rest from their burdens.

  39. The same day,

  40. Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their foremen,

  41. You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks,

  42. as in the past.

  43. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.

  44. But the number of bricks that they made in the past,

  45. you shall impose on them.

  46. You shall by no means reduce it,

  47. for they are idle.

  48. Therefore, they cried,

  49. Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.

  50. Let heavier work be laid on the men,

  51. that they may labor at it and pay no regard to lying words.

  52. So the taskmasters and the foremen of the people

  53. went out and said to the people,

  54. Thus says Pharaoh,

  55. I will not give you straw.

  56. Go and get your straw yourselves,

  57. wherever you can find it,

  58. but your work will not be reduced in the least.

  59. So the people were scattered throughout all the land of Egypt together,

  60. stubble for straw.

  61. The taskmasters were urgent,

  62. saying,

  63. Complete your work,

  64. your daily task,

  65. each day,

  66. as when there was straw.

  67. And the foremen of the people of Israel,

  68. whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had said over them,

  69. were beaten and were asked,

  70. Why have you not done all your task of making bricks today and yesterday,

  71. as in the past?

  72. Then the foremen of the people of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh,

  73. Why do you treat your servants like this?

  74. No straw is given to your servants,

  75. yet they say to us,

  76. Make bricks,

  77. and behold,

  78. your servants are beaten,

  79. but the fault is in your own people.

  80. But he said,

  81. You are idle.

  82. You are idle.

  83. That is why you say,

  84. Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.

  85. Go now and work.

  86. No straw will be given you,

  87. but you must still deliver the same number of bricks.

  88. The foremen of the people of Israel saw that they were in trouble when they said,

  89. You shall by no means reduce your number of bricks,

  90. your daily task each day.

  91. They met Moses and Aaron,

  92. who were waiting for them as they came out from Pharaoh.

  93. And they said to them,

  94. The Lord look on you and judge,

  95. because you have made a stink in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants,

  96. and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.

  97. Then Moses turned to the Lord and said,

  98. O Lord,

  99. why have you done evil to this people?

  100. Why did you ever send me?

  101. For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name,

  102. he has done evil to this people,

  103. and you have not delivered your people at all.

  104. But the Lord said to Moses,

  105. Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh,

  106. for with a strong hand he will send them out,

  107. and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.

  108. God spoke to Moses and said to him,

  109. I am the Lord.

  110. I appear to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob as God Almighty.

  111. But by my name, the Lord, I did not make myself known to them.

  112. I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan,

  113. the land in which they lived as sojourners.

  114. Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the people of Israel,

  115. whom the Egyptians hold as slaves,

  116. and I have remembered my covenant.

  117. Say therefore to the people of Israel,

  118. I am the Lord,

  119. and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians,

  120. and I will deliver you from slavery to them,

  121. and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm,

  122. and with great acts of judgment.

  123. I will take you to be my people,

  124. and I will be your God,

  125. and you shall know that I am the Lord your God,

  126. who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

  127. I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham,

  128. to Isaac, and to Jacob.

  129. I will give it to you for a possession.

  130. I am the Lord.

  131. Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel,

  132. but they did not listen to Moses

  133. because of their broken spirit and harsh slavery.

  134. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  135. Perhaps a few of us have lived what others would describe a charmed life.

  136. You haven't really encountered much suffering in or setbacks in your life,

  137. smooth sailing most of it.

  138. You come from a solid family.

  139. You've always been healthy.

  140. You went to a prestigious school,

  141. found a wonderful spouse,

  142. and now you make a lot of money,

  143. and you're well loved by everyone around you.

  144. But most of us,

  145. and probably even those of us who appear on the outside to have such a charmed life,

  146. have experienced significant pain and brokenness in our lives.

  147. Maybe you have an incurable disease that God has not healed you of.

  148. Maybe you have had miscarriages.

  149. Maybe you feel lonely,

  150. but God hasn't answered your prayer for a spouse.

  151. Maybe you have asked God to lift the cloud of depression or anxiety from your mind,

  152. but you still remain under its dark shadow.

  153. Perhaps you've faced a lot of rejections in your life,

  154. many disappointments,

  155. perhaps even abuse.

  156. So we become,

  157. because of these experiences,

  158. increasingly pessimistic and cynical

  159. as our pains linger unabated.

  160. And the Israelites were familiar with that experience.

  161. It says here in Exodus 6-9

  162. that they did not listen to Moses

  163. because of their broken spirit and harsh slavery.

  164. They had been oppressed for so long,

  165. disappointed so many times,

  166. that their spirit is broken.

  167. That's literally in Hebrew,

  168. the shortness of spirit.

  169. In the same way,

  170. when we're exercising strenuously,

  171. you experience shortness of breath.

  172. Here, due to the unrelenting oppression of the Egyptians,

  173. they're experiencing shortness of spirit.

  174. They lack courage.

  175. They lack life.

  176. They lack vitality.

  177. They lack hope.

  178. They're anguished and crushed in spirit.

  179. But in this passage,

  180. the Lord reminds such people

  181. that he is the Lord who keeps his promises

  182. despite appearances to the contrary.

  183. And we're going to see reasons

  184. why we can continue to trust in him

  185. and hope in him

  186. even when you're in those places in your life.

  187. First, we're going to see the failure of God's promises

  188. in verses 1-23,

  189. or the seeming failure.

  190. And then we're going to see the fulfillment

  191. of God's promises in chapter 6,

  192. verses 1-9.

  193. It's been two weeks away from Exodus,

  194. so let me remind you what happened

  195. last time when we were in chapter 4.

  196. When God sent Moses to go into Egypt

  197. and gather the elders of Israel

  198. to tell them about God's plan to deliver them,

  199. Moses protested to God in chapter 4, verse 1,

  200. Behold, they will not believe me

  201. or listen to my voice.

  202. Despite the fact that God assured him

  203. that they will listen to his voice.

  204. But of course,

  205. when Moses obeys,

  206. they actually do listen to him.

  207. And Moses is pleasantly surprised.

  208. And so at this point,

  209. he's kind of on cloud nine.

  210. His meeting with the elders of Israel

  211. went much better than he anticipated.

  212. And now he feels,

  213. he and Aaron feel like they're on a roll.

  214. So with daring confidence,

  215. they march into Pharaoh.

  216. And this is what they say

  217. in chapter 5, verse 1.

  218. Thus says the Lord,

  219. the God of Israel,

  220. let my people go

  221. that they may hold a feast to me

  222. in the wilderness.

  223. There are a couple problems

  224. with this grand announcement.

  225. Because first,

  226. originally in chapter 3, verse 18,

  227. God had instructed Moses

  228. to go with the elders of Israel

  229. to confront Pharaoh.

  230. But here, according to verse 1,

  231. he goes by himself with Aaron.

  232. And then second,

  233. what they say to Pharaoh

  234. is not at all what God

  235. had told them to say to Pharaoh

  236. earlier in chapter 3, verse 18.

  237. Because God had told them to say,

  238. the Lord,

  239. the God of the Hebrews,

  240. has met with us.

  241. And now,

  242. please,

  243. let us go on a three days journey

  244. into the wilderness

  245. that we may sacrifice

  246. to the Lord our God.

  247. much like the way you hold your cards

  248. close to your hand

  249. when you're playing a game

  250. and you don't let others

  251. figure out what you're planning

  252. or doing.

  253. Or like the way an army

  254. lays an ambush

  255. with the, you know,

  256. enduring war

  257. to trick an enemy

  258. into making a blunder.

  259. This was a strategic calculation

  260. to begin with a more diplomatic

  261. and palatable request

  262. of a temporary leave of absence

  263. before leaving Egypt permanently.

  264. So it was a way to test Pharaoh

  265. to show how stubbornly opposed

  266. he was to worship of the Lord.

  267. But perhaps,

  268. in their overweening confidence,

  269. Moses and Aaron skip all of that

  270. and they go straight to the end game.

  271. There's no please,

  272. there's no let us go

  273. on a three days journey,

  274. simply the unqualified demand,

  275. let my people go.

  276. But they run into a brick wall

  277. and Pharaoh responds in verse two,

  278. who is the Lord

  279. that I should obey his voice

  280. and let Israel go?

  281. I do not know the Lord

  282. and I will not let Israel go.

  283. The kings of Egypt back then

  284. were considered to be gods

  285. and they gladly indulged that fancy.

  286. As I mentioned a few weeks ago,

  287. Rachmir,

  288. who served as prime minister

  289. under Pharaoh Thutmose III

  290. and Amenhotep II

  291. in 5th century BC

  292. described Pharaoh this way,

  293. what is the king

  294. of upper and lower Egypt?

  295. He is a god

  296. by whose dealings one lives,

  297. the father and mother of all men,

  298. alone by himself,

  299. without an equal.

  300. The famous Pharaoh,

  301. Ramesses,

  302. his name means born of Ra,

  303. the Egyptian deity of the sun

  304. and he claimed to be the,

  305. formed in the image of Tatanen,

  306. the father of the gods.

  307. So considering these realities in Egypt,

  308. Pharaoh's disdainful response

  309. to Moses is not at all surprising.

  310. He's basically saying,

  311. who is Yahweh?

  312. I've never heard of him.

  313. I'm the god of these lands.

  314. I'm the one in charge.

  315. Why should I listen to him?

  316. Pharaoh thinks he's a somebody

  317. while the Lord is a nobody.

  318. So there's no way

  319. he's going to let the Israelites go.

  320. And Pharaoh's response aptly captures

  321. the heart of human rebellion against God.

  322. We have all sinned

  323. and rebelled against God

  324. in the same way.

  325. Even though we were created

  326. to worship God

  327. and to live for him,

  328. we say,

  329. who is the Lord?

  330. And that I should obey his voice.

  331. I do not know the Lord.

  332. Rather than acknowledging

  333. God's authority as our creator,

  334. we declare ourselves

  335. to be the authority

  336. of our own lives.

  337. We live like autocrats

  338. who rule our own little victims.

  339. As Romans 1.25 says,

  340. we have worshipped and served

  341. the creature rather than the creator.

  342. We did not see fit

  343. to acknowledge God as God.

  344. But Pharaoh's denial,

  345. I do not know the Lord,

  346. anticipates the refrain

  347. of chapter 6, verse 7,

  348. which says,

  349. you shall know

  350. that I am the Lord your God.

  351. Knowing God

  352. is a major refrain

  353. throughout the book of Exodus.

  354. Again and again in the book,

  355. the Lord says to the Israelites,

  356. you shall know

  357. that I am the Lord your God.

  358. And again and again,

  359. he says to the Egyptians,

  360. the Egyptians shall know

  361. that I am the Lord

  362. when I stretch out my hand

  363. against Egypt

  364. and bring out

  365. the people of Israel.

  366. So already,

  367. Moses here gives us

  368. a clue to this reality

  369. that they will come

  370. to know the Lord.

  371. Even though Pharaoh's asking

  372. who is the Lord,

  373. ironically,

  374. in this passage,

  375. God is named

  376. by his personal name,

  377. Yahweh,

  378. over and over again.

  379. Remember that whenever

  380. the word Lord

  381. appears in all caps,

  382. it's a translation

  383. of God's personal name

  384. in Hebrew.

  385. So in chapter 6,

  386. verse 2,

  387. the Lord reiterates

  388. how he has revealed himself

  389. to his people

  390. as Yahweh,

  391. but Pharaoh,

  392. on the other hand,

  393. is never named.

  394. Not in this passage

  395. and not anywhere else

  396. in the book.

  397. Pharaoh thinks

  398. he is somebody

  399. and that Yahweh

  400. is nobody,

  401. but the reality

  402. is exactly the opposite.

  403. The Lord is known

  404. and he will be known,

  405. but Pharaoh remains unknown

  406. to the readers of Exodus.

  407. The Lord will be remembered forever,

  408. but Pharaoh will be forgotten.

  409. And before long,

  410. Pharaoh himself

  411. will come to this conclusion.

  412. He will soon learn

  413. that he, the Lord,

  414. and not himself,

  415. is the authority in Egypt

  416. and everywhere else.

  417. And when he learns this,

  418. Pharaoh's unqualified no

  419. in this instance

  420. will be changed

  421. to an unconditional yes.

  422. The same is true for us,

  423. whether you know

  424. the Lord or not.

  425. Whether you acknowledge

  426. him or not.

  427. The day is coming

  428. as prophesied

  429. in Habakkuk 2, verse 14,

    Habakkuk 2:14

  430. when the earth

  431. will be filled

  432. with the knowledge

  433. of the glory of the Lord

  434. as the waters cover the sea.

  435. The day is coming

  436. when we will have no choice

  437. but to acknowledge

  438. the Lord as God.

  439. Every knee will bow before him.

  440. Every tongue will confess

  441. his name and swear allegiance

  442. to him.

  443. The choice before us

  444. is whether we will do it

  445. as his willing subjects now

  446. or as his subdued enemies later.

  447. If you don't know the Lord,

  448. this is an opportunity

  449. for you to heed his word

  450. because he's speaking now from it.

  451. And after getting this hard no

  452. from Pharaoh in verse 2,

  453. we see Moses and Aaron

  454. kind of walking back

  455. their bold proposition

  456. of verse 1

  457. and qualifying their demand

  458. in verse 3.

  459. Then they said,

  460. the God of the Hebrews

  461. has met with us.

  462. Please let us go

  463. a three days journey

  464. into the wilderness

  465. that we may sacrifice

  466. to the Lord our God

  467. lest he fall upon us

  468. with pestilence

  469. or with the sword.

  470. So now they're saying

  471. something closer to

  472. what God had originally

  473. commanded them to say

  474. in chapter 3.

  475. So gone is the bold,

  476. thus says the Lord.

  477. And now they explain meekly

  478. the God of the Hebrews

  479. has met with us.

  480. Oh, you don't know the Lord?

  481. Well, he's the God of the Hebrews.

  482. You know them.

  483. You know us.

  484. You're slaves.

  485. Gone is the triumphant.

  486. Let my people go.

  487. Now they say,

  488. please let us go

  489. on a three days journey

  490. into the wilderness.

  491. That's not too much

  492. to ask, is it?

  493. But that's not all they say.

  494. Moses and Aaron

  495. also add their own touch.

  496. They portray the Lord

  497. as this vindictive deity

  498. who would punish the Israelites

  499. with pestilence

  500. or with the sword

  501. if they fail to go out

  502. into the wilderness

  503. to offer sacrifice.

  504. Look at what they say.

  505. Lest he fall upon us.

  506. The whole time in this verse

  507. us refers to the Israelites,

  508. not to all of Egypt.

  509. So he's saying,

  510. have pity on us, Pharaoh.

  511. It's not because

  512. we really want to do this.

  513. Our God is a little temperamental,

  514. you see.

  515. Prone to lose his temper.

  516. He might kill us

  517. if we don't go out

  518. into the wilderness.

  519. Please let us go.

  520. But Pharaoh doesn't budge.

  521. It says in verses four to five,

  522. but the king of Egypt

  523. said to them,

  524. Moses and Aaron,

  525. why do you take the people

  526. away from their work?

  527. Get back to your burdens.

  528. And Pharaoh said,

  529. behold,

  530. the people of the land

  531. are now many

  532. and you make them rest

  533. from their burdens.

  534. The Jews are a sizable workforce

  535. and Pharaoh doesn't want

  536. any supply chain issues.

  537. He wants enough bricks

  538. for all the building projects

  539. that he is working on.

  540. And this response shows

  541. just how oppressive

  542. of a tyrant Pharaoh really was.

  543. He treats Israelites like cattle.

  544. Their only value to them,

  545. to him is their labor.

  546. He doesn't care

  547. how heavy their burdens are.

  548. He's upset that Moses

  549. wants to make them rest

  550. from their burdens.

  551. This word rest

  552. is the verbal form

  553. of the Hebrew word for Sabbath.

  554. Later in Exodus 20,

  555. in the Ten Commandments,

  556. God will specifically

  557. command them to rest.

  558. Remember the Sabbath day

  559. to keep it holy.

  560. Six days you shall labor

  561. and do all your work,

  562. but the seventh day

  563. is a Sabbath

  564. to the Lord your God.

  565. On it you shall not

  566. do any work.

  567. And then in Deuteronomy chapter 5,

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  568. where the Sabbath command

  569. is repeated,

  570. Moses specifically gives

  571. this rationale

  572. for the command to rest.

  573. Quote,

  574. You shall remember

  575. that you were a slave

  576. in the land of Egypt,

  577. and the Lord your God

  578. brought you out from there

  579. with a mighty hand

  580. and an outstretched arm.

  581. Therefore,

  582. the Lord your God

  583. commanded you

  584. to keep the Sabbath day.

  585. Pharaoh is a cruel

  586. and selfish master

  587. who demands work

  588. seven days a week.

  589. But the Lord

  590. is a gracious master

  591. and he commands

  592. his people to rest.

  593. God says we should not

  594. work all the time.

  595. Why?

  596. Because we're not

  597. slaves anymore.

  598. Who or what,

  599. if I may ask you,

  600. is the Pharaoh

  601. that you are enslaved

  602. to in your own life?

  603. Are you living

  604. for people's approval

  605. or for the applause of man?

  606. Do you want to accomplish

  607. big things in life

  608. so that you can finally

  609. be recognized?

  610. So you can prove yourself

  611. to others?

  612. Who is your Pharaoh?

  613. Are you living to please

  614. or satisfy other people?

  615. If we serve

  616. any other master

  617. but the Lord God

  618. who promises us

  619. rest for our souls,

  620. then we will be

  621. run into the ground.

  622. We will have to work

  623. without rest.

  624. In the Academy Award

  625. winning film

  626. Chariots of Fire,

  627. there's a poetic contrast

  628. between two gold medal

  629. winning Olympic sprinters,

  630. Harold Abrams

  631. and Eric Little.

  632. Harold Abrams

  633. runs for himself

  634. so he works

  635. tirelessly

  636. and even though

  637. he is incredibly successful,

  638. he feels empty

  639. and can't shake off

  640. this feeling

  641. of existential crisis.

  642. He says in the movie,

  643. and now in one hour's time,

  644. I will be out there again.

  645. I will raise my eyes

  646. and look down that corridor

  647. four feet wide

  648. with ten lonely seconds

  649. to justify

  650. my whole existence.

  651. But will I?

  652. Eric Little,

  653. on the other hand,

  654. runs for God.

  655. And when he finds out

  656. that the opening heat

  657. for the hundred meter dash

  658. is set for Sunday,

  659. he decides that he will not run

  660. on the Sabbath,

  661. not even in the Olympics.

  662. And so he skips the race

  663. and goes to church.

  664. I'm not necessarily endorsing that,

  665. but that was his conviction.

  666. I respect him for it.

  667. Why?

  668. Because he doesn't need

  669. to prove himself.

  670. He doesn't need the Olympic gold medal

  671. to justify his existence

  672. so he can rest.

  673. He ends up winning the gold medal anyway

  674. in a different event

  675. that was not even his best event.

  676. Only God can give rest for us

  677. from our burdens.

  678. You cannot justify your own existence.

  679. You must find your identity

  680. and fulfillment

  681. in God,

  682. in Christ.

  683. You cannot save yourself.

  684. You must believe in Jesus

  685. alone for your justification

  686. and salvation.

  687. Our gracious Lord,

  688. and Master,

  689. he's offering us rest

  690. from our burdens.

  691. But are you living

  692. like a servant

  693. of the Lord

  694. or like a servant

  695. of Pharaoh?

  696. The previous Pharaoh

  697. in chapter 1

  698. thought that he could control

  699. the fast-growing

  700. Israelite population

  701. by keeping them

  702. under his thumb,

  703. under slavery.

  704. And this new Pharaoh's mentality

  705. is no different.

  706. He thinks the best way

  707. to keep the Israelites

  708. and put them back to work

  709. is to double down

  710. and be even harsher with them.

  711. So it says in verse 6-9,

  712. the same day,

  713. Pharaoh commanded

  714. the taskmasters

  715. of the people

  716. and their foremen,

  717. you shall no longer

  718. give the people straw

  719. to make bricks

  720. as in the past,

  721. let them go

  722. and gather straw

  723. for themselves.

  724. But the number of bricks

  725. that they made in the past,

  726. you shall impose on them.

  727. You shall by no means

  728. reduce it,

  729. for they are idle.

  730. Therefore they cry,

  731. let us go and offer

  732. sacrifices to our God.

  733. Let heavier work

  734. be laid on the men

  735. that they may labor at it

  736. and pay no regard

  737. to the lying words.

  738. So straw,

  739. during those days,

  740. was added to clay

  741. because straw

  742. is this, you know,

  743. fibrous,

  744. linear fiber

  745. that makes the brick

  746. more, I guess,

  747. stable

  748. instead of crumbling apart.

  749. And so that's why

  750. they put straw in there.

  751. And Pharaoh had a store

  752. of straws,

  753. but they are now

  754. refusing to give the straws.

  755. And the result

  756. is predictable.

  757. The Israelites

  758. failed to meet the quota,

  759. but then they get,

  760. the foremen get beaten up

  761. and it's the demand

  762. of them to bring

  763. the same amount

  764. of bricks.

  765. And notice how

  766. they make this announcement,

  767. the taskmasters.

  768. They say,

  769. thus says Pharaoh

  770. in verse 10.

  771. It's the exact contrast

  772. from verse 1.

  773. Thus says the Lord.

  774. There's an ongoing

  775. tension and conflict

  776. here in this passage

  777. between the Lord God

  778. and Pharaoh

  779. who is the anti-God.

  780. And Pharaoh's decree

  781. exposes his cruelty.

  782. It says that the Israelites

  783. in verse 12

  784. have to scatter

  785. throughout the land

  786. together,

  787. stubble for straw.

  788. So stubble is

  789. what's left over

  790. after the harvest

  791. for straw is already done.

  792. The leftover part,

  793. the small part that's over.

  794. So that means

  795. the Egyptians

  796. already took all the straw.

  797. They harvested it all,

  798. put it in storage,

  799. and now they're refusing

  800. to give it to the Israelites.

  801. Instead,

  802. they're making,

  803. sending them back out

  804. to go get the leftovers.

  805. No wonder they can't

  806. find enough straw.

  807. And not only that,

  808. they're turning

  809. the Israelites against them.

  810. Notice that they

  811. appointed Jewish

  812. foremen

  813. to oversee the labors.

  814. They're from the people

  815. of Israel.

  816. They beat the foremen

  817. demanding that they bring,

  818. they produce the same

  819. number of bricks

  820. so that they themselves

  821. are forced to crack

  822. the whip on their own people

  823. to save their own backs.

  824. And the desperate

  825. Jewish foremen

  826. cry out to Pharaoh

  827. in verses 15 to 16,

  828. why do you treat

  829. your servants like this?

  830. No straw is given

  831. to your servants,

  832. yet they say to us,

  833. make bricks,

  834. and behold,

  835. your servants

  836. are beaten,

  837. but the fault

  838. is in your own people.

  839. Notice how sadly

  840. servile the Israelites

  841. are in this verse.

  842. Three times,

  843. they reiterate

  844. their loyalty to Pharaoh

  845. by describing themselves

  846. as your servants.

  847. That's the noun form

  848. of the Hebrew verb

  849. that means

  850. to serve

  851. or to worship,

  852. and that's the word

  853. that God will use

  854. repeatedly,

  855. starting in Exodus 7,

  856. 16,

  857. to say,

  858. let my people go

  859. that they may serve me.

  860. Running through

  861. the book of Exodus

  862. is this overarching question,

  863. whom will you serve?

  864. Will the Israelites

  865. serve Pharaoh

  866. or will they serve

  867. Yafu'e?

  868. And at this point,

  869. they are decidedly

  870. choosing Pharaoh.

  871. We're your servants,

  872. Pharaoh.

  873. But these verses

  874. also make clear

  875. that they're choosing

  876. the wrong person

  877. because it says

  878. in verse 15

  879. that they cried out

  880. to Pharaoh.

  881. And you saw

  882. Pharaoh's harsh response.

  883. But remember

  884. what happened

  885. earlier in the book

  886. in chapter 2,

  887. 23 to 24,

  888. when the people

  889. of Israel

  890. cried out

  891. to the Lord,

  892. he said

  893. that their cry

  894. for rescue

  895. from slavery

  896. came up to God

  897. and God heard

  898. their groaning

  899. and God remembered

  900. his covenant

  901. with Abraham,

  902. with Isaac,

  903. and with Jacob.

  904. God saw

  905. the people of Israel

  906. and God knew.

  907. That's what happened

  908. when they cried out

  909. to the Lord.

  910. They were heard,

  911. they were remembered,

  912. they were known

  913. by God.

  914. But when they cry

  915. out to Pharaoh,

  916. they get nothing

  917. but harsh oppression.

  918. Who are you

  919. crying out to

  920. for relief

  921. in your own life?

  922. In the pains

  923. and struggles

  924. of your own life,

  925. who are you

  926. crying out to?

  927. Are you crying out

  928. to the Lord

  929. who is attentive

  930. to even your faintest groans?

  931. Who is listening

  932. to you?

  933. Who is responding

  934. to you?

  935. Who hears you

  936. and sees you

  937. better than anyone

  938. else in the world?

  939. Or are you

  940. crying out to man?

  941. And since Pharaoh

  942. won't listen to them,

  943. the distressed Israelites

  944. confront Moses and Aaron

  945. in verse 21.

  946. The Lord look on you

  947. and judge

  948. because you have made

  949. a stink in the sight

  950. of Pharaoh

  951. and his servants

  952. and have put a sword

  953. in their hands

  954. to kill us.

  955. And then Moses

  956. turns around

  957. and blames God,

  958. attributes evil

  959. to God

  960. in the same way

  961. he attributed evil

  962. to Pharaoh.

  963. So it seems like

  964. the situation

  965. is getting only worse.

  966. It seems like

  967. God's promises

  968. have faltered

  969. and Moses asked,

  970. why did you send me here

  971. in the first place?

  972. But the Lord assures us

  973. in chapter 6

  974. that his promises

  975. have not failed.

  976. Earlier in chapter 3,

  977. 19 to 20,

  978. God said that

  979. the king of Egypt

  980. will not let you go

  981. unless compelled

  982. by a mighty hand

  983. so I will stretch out

  984. my hand

  985. and strike Egypt

  986. with all the wonders

  987. that I will do in it.

  988. After that,

  989. he will let you go.

  990. He says the same thing

  991. here in chapter 6,

  992. verse 1.

  993. He says,

  994. now you shall see

  995. what I will do

  996. to Pharaoh

  997. for with a strong hand

  998. he will send them out

  999. and with a strong hand

  1000. he will drive them

  1001. out of his hand.

  1002. It's a little ambiguous here

  1003. whose strong hand

  1004. they're talking to.

  1005. It could be referring

1006. to the Lord's strong hand.

1007. Because of the Lord's strong hand,

  1008. the Pharaoh will let

  1009. the Israelites go

  1010. and drive them out.

  1011. That's how a lot

  1012. of translations have it.

  1013. But the ESV

  1014. intentionally leaves it

  1015. ambiguous

  1016. and I think that's good

  1017. because it could also

  1018. be ironic.

1019. Later in Exodus chapter 12,

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  1020. 33,

1021. it says that the Egyptians

1022. were urgent with the people

  1023. to send them out

  1024. of the land

  1025. in haste

  1026. for they said,

1027. we shall all be dead.

  1028. And the word

  1029. translated urgent

1030. there is the exact same word

  1031. that's translated here

  1032. as strong.

  1033. So they were strong.

  1034. The Egyptians were strong

  1035. with the people

  1036. to send them out

  1037. of the land

  1038. in haste

  1039. because they're so afraid

  1040. of further punishment

1041. that might come to them.

1042. So remember what I said

1043. to you a few weeks ago

1044. that one of the frequently

  1045. used titles for Pharaohs

  1046. back in those days

  1047. was the Lord

  1048. of the strong arm.

  1049. And so here,

  1050. that very title,

  1051. that very reputation

  1052. is being challenged.

  1053. The strong hand

  1054. of Pharaoh

1055. is not going to be used

  1056. to keep the Israelites

  1057. enslaved,

  1058. but instead,

1059. he will use his strong hand

  1060. to release them.

  1061. Instead of keeping them

  1062. in his iron grip,

  1063. in his strong hands,

1064. Pharaoh will have no choice

1065. but to send them away.

1066. I think this is a great image.

  1067. Imagine like

  1068. an arm wrestling champion,

  1069. like Matthias' brother

1070. is an arm wrestling champion,

  1071. and he imagined this,

  1072. you know,

  1073. enormous forearm

  1074. with bulging biceps,

  1075. and then he starts

  1076. arm wrestling someone else,

  1077. and his opponent

  1078. is so strong

  1079. that this champion

1080. just is getting thrown around

  1081. like a rag doll.

  1082. That's what's happening

  1083. here to Pharaoh.

1084. The Lord of the strong arm

  1085. used to liberate

  1086. the people of Israel.

1087. That's what mighty king Pharaoh

1088. is going to look like.

  1089. That's what the so-called

  1090. God king is going

  1091. to be reduced to.

  1092. He will be thoroughly

  1093. defeated and humiliated.

  1094. And what follows

  1095. in verses 2-8

  1096. is a remarkable set

  1097. of reminders

  1098. and promises by God.

  1099. In verses 2-5,

  1100. God reminds Moses

  1101. of the four things

1102. that he has already done.

  1103. He says,

  1104. I appeared to Abraham,

  1105. to Isaac,

  1106. and to Jacob

  1107. as God Almighty,

  1108. but by my name,

  1109. the Lord,

1110. I did not make myself

  1111. known to them.

  1112. Second,

  1113. I established

  1114. my covenant with them

  1115. to give them

  1116. the land of Canaan,

  1117. the land in which

  1118. they lived as sojourners.

  1119. Third,

  1120. I have heard

  1121. the groaning

1122. of the people of Israel

  1123. whom the Egyptians

  1124. hold as slaves.

  1125. And fourth,

  1126. and I have remembered

  1127. my covenant.

  1128. So four things

  1129. God has already done.

1130. And then in verses 6-8,

  1131. God instructs Moses

1132. to tell the people of Israel

  1133. that he will

  1134. specifically fulfill

  1135. all of his promises.

  1136. And there's seven

  1137. powerful

  1138. I will statements.

1139. I will bring you out

  1140. from under the burdens

  1141. of the Egyptians.

  1142. I will deliver you

  1143. from slavery to them.

  1144. I will redeem you

  1145. with an outstretched arm

  1146. and with great acts

  1147. of judgment.

  1148. I will take you

  1149. to be my people.

1150. I will be your God.

  1151. I will bring you

  1152. into the land

1153. that I swore to give

  1154. to Abraham,

  1155. Isaac,

  1156. and Jacob.

1157. I will give it to you

  1158. for a possession.

  1159. And note well

  1160. that from the beginning

  1161. to the end,

  1162. the whole speech

  1163. is about what

  1164. the Lord will do

  1165. and not about

  1166. what Moses and Aaron

  1167. will do.

  1168. Only the Lord

  1169. can deliver Israel

  1170. from their slavery

  1171. and bring them

  1172. into the promised land.

  1173. Salvation belongs

  1174. to the Lord

  1175. from the beginning

  1176. to the end.

  1177. And this idea

  1178. is reinforced

  1179. by the repetition

  1180. of the phrase,

  1181. I am the Lord.

  1182. Look at that.

  1183. What God says

  1184. to Moses

  1185. begins with the assurance,

  1186. I am the Lord.

  1187. And what God says

1188. to the people of Israel,

  1189. begins and ends

  1190. with the same phrase,

  1191. I am the Lord.

  1192. And then smack dab

  1193. at the center

  1194. of what God says

  1195. to Israel

  1196. is the only statement

  1197. of what the people

  1198. will do

  1199. and it's this,

  1200. you shall know

  1201. that I am

  1202. the Lord,

  1203. your God.

  1204. That's the heart

  1205. of what God

  1206. is trying to communicate

  1207. here.

  1208. And why is God

  1209. so emphatic about this?

  1210. God, we get it.

1211. We know who you are.

1212. Why does he say it

  1213. over and over again?

  1214. We find the reason

  1215. in verse 3,

  1216. I appeared to Abraham,

  1217. to Isaac,

  1218. and to Jacob

  1219. as God Almighty.

  1220. But by my name,

  1221. the Lord,

  1222. Yehovah,

  1223. or Yahweh,

1224. I did not make myself

  1225. known to them.

  1226. This is an allusion

  1227. to Genesis 17, 1

  1228. and Genesis 35, 11

  1229. where God reveals himself

  1230. to Abraham and Jacob

  1231. respectively

  1232. as God Almighty

  1233. or El Shaddai.

  1234. And in both

  1235. of those contexts,

  1236. the name of God

  1237. is connected to

  1238. making the Israelites,

  1239. the patriarchs,

  1240. fruitful and multiply.

  1241. And that's a promise

  1242. that's already been fulfilled

  1243. as we've seen

1244. in the first few chapters

1245. of the book of Exodus.

  1246. But it's not that

  1247. the patriarchs

  1248. were completely unaware

  1249. of the name Yahweh.

  1250. God did reveal himself

  1251. as that to them

  1252. at two specific points

  1253. in Genesis 15, 7

  1254. and Genesis 28, 13.

  1255. Again, to Abraham

  1256. and Jacob respectively.

  1257. And interestingly,

1258. in both of those instances

  1259. where God reveals himself

  1260. to them as Yahweh

  1261. prior to the Exodus,

  1262. that name is connected

  1263. to his promise

  1264. that they will enter

  1265. into the promised land.

  1266. And that promise

  1267. is not yet fulfilled.

  1268. And I think that's the reason

  1269. why there's this emphasis

1270. on the name of God

  1271. because the times

  1272. of Abraham, Isaac,

  1273. and Jacob

1274. were the era of promise.

1275. But now is the time

  1276. of fulfillment.

  1277. Those patriarchs lived

  1278. as sojourners

  1279. in the promised land.

  1280. But you,

  1281. the Israelites,

1282. will now live as owners

1283. and possess it as your own.

  1284. And it's the name,

  1285. the Lord, Yahweh,

  1286. that guarantees

  1287. the fulfillment

  1288. of these promises.

  1289. It's like,

  1290. it's a declaration.

  1291. I am the Lord.

  1292. It's like God's signature

  1293. on the dotted line.

  1294. He's telling the Israelites,

1295. you can go and cash

1296. this check in the bank

1297. because I am the Lord.

  1298. Why?

  1299. Do you remember

  1300. what the name means?

  1301. It means,

  1302. I am who I am.

  1303. It can also mean,

1304. I will be who I will be.

  1305. It's timeless.

  1306. And that's completely

  1307. intentionally communicates

  1308. God's presence

  1309. in the past,

  1310. presence,

  1311. and the future.

  1312. He's the same yesterday,

  1313. today,

  1314. and forever.

  1315. He was and is

  1316. and will be.

  1317. So another way

  1318. to describe God

1319. is that He is unchanging.

  1320. He is faithful.

  1321. He is always true

  1322. to Himself

  1323. and to His promises.

  1324. And that means

  1325. His promises,

  1326. His words,

1327. never fall to the ground.

1328. So the name of the Lord

1329. suggests that He is not only

  1330. a promise maker,

  1331. but He's also a promise keeper.

  1332. And likewise,

  1333. the name Yahweh,

1334. which means I am who I am,

1335. is derived from the Hebrew verb

  1336. to be,

  1337. and that's connected

1338. to God's promise to Moses

  1339. in chapter 3,

  1340. verse 12,

1341. I will be with you.

  1342. That's the very meaning

  1343. of God's proper name.

1344. God's name is God with us.

  1345. He is the God

  1346. who is with us.

  1347. That means He has

  1348. bound Himself up

  1349. irrevocably

  1350. with His people

  1351. by the covenant.

  1352. This is why

  1353. over and over again

  1354. throughout the scriptures,

  1355. God's people

  1356. appeal to God's deliverance

  1357. saying,

1358. for the sake of your great name

  1359. do such and such.

  1360. Psalm 25, 11,

  1361. for your name's sake,

  1362. O Lord,

  1363. pardon my guilt.

  1364. Psalm 31, 3,

  1365. for your name's sake,

1366. you lead me and guide me.

  1367. Psalm 143, 11,

  1368. for your name's sake,

  1369. O Lord,

  1370. preserve my life.

  1371. Why does the psalmist

  1372. think that

  1373. pardoning his guilt

  1374. and leading him

  1375. and preserving his life

  1376. is for the Lord's name's sake?

  1377. Because the name

  1378. of the Lord

  1379. is on him.

  1380. Because he belongs

  1381. to God's chosen people.

  1382. Ezekiel 20, 44

  1383. is particularly helpful here

  1384. where the Lord says,

  1385. you shall know

1386. that I am the Lord

1387. when I deal with you

  1388. for my name's sake,

  1389. not according to

  1390. your evil ways,

  1391. not according to

  1392. your corrupt deeds,

  1393. O house of Israel.

  1394. He acts

  1395. for the sake

  1396. of his holy name.

  1397. Let's say that

  1398. your father

  1399. agrees to sign,

  1400. to be a cosigner

  1401. on your mortgage loan.

  1402. If you default

  1403. on that loan,

  1404. your father

  1405. must assume

  1406. legal responsibility

  1407. to repay that loan.

  1408. Because his name

  1409. and his credit

  1410. is now

  1411. on the line.

  1412. In a similar way,

  1413. it falls

  1414. on the Lord's name

  1415. to bring Israel

  1416. into the promised land.

  1417. Because he has made

  1418. a covenant

  1419. with his people

  1420. and said,

  1421. these are the people

  1422. on whom my name

  1423. rests.

  1424. Perhaps some of you

1425. are in a similar season

  1426. in life

  1427. like these Israelites

  1428. in Egypt.

1429. You have a broken spirit,

  1430. maybe a prolonged sickness,

  1431. repeated failures

  1432. and disappointments,

  1433. persistent loneliness,

  1434. and you're doubting

  1435. God's goodness.

  1436. But despite all appearances

  1437. to the contrary,

  1438. remember that the Lord

  1439. is with you.

  1440. His name

  1441. is on you

  1442. and that means

  1443. His promises

  1444. to you

  1445. are guaranteed.

  1446. And so he says

  1447. in verse 6,

  1448. I will redeem you

  1449. with an outstretched arm

  1450. and with great acts

  1451. of judgment.

  1452. The word redeem,

  1453. what does it mean

  1454. to redeem?

  1455. What does it mean

  1456. to be a redeemer?

  1457. A redeemer

  1458. in Hebrew

  1459. is literally

  1460. the family protector.

  1461. A redeemer

  1462. was the nearest

  1463. relative

  1464. of a person

  1465. who becomes poor

  1466. and loses

  1467. all of his property

1468. and has to sell himself

  1469. into slavery.

  1470. And if that happened

  1471. to your relative

  1472. and you're the redeemer,

  1473. it was the redeemer's

  1474. responsibility

1475. to go and pay the debt,

  1476. redeem your relative

1477. so that he can be free

1478. and so that he can live

  1479. in the land

1480. that God has given him.

  1481. So this is literally

  1482. what God is saying

  1483. He's doing for us.

  1484. His people,

1485. we have sinned against Him.

  1486. We have a deficit.

  1487. We are under slavery

  1488. to sin.

  1489. We have lost

1490. what was given to us

  1491. and yet God says

  1492. I will redeem.

  1493. I will pay.

  1494. I will sign

  1495. because my name

  1496. is on that people.

  1497. I'm so grateful

  1498. that that's the basis

  1499. for God's promises

  1500. to us.

  1501. Can you imagine

1502. if it were up to us

  1503. how often we sin,

1504. how often we fail God,

1505. how often we fall short

  1506. of His glory?

1507. If it were up to us,

  1508. you think God

  1509. can be faithful.

1510. If it depended on us,

  1511. you think God

  1512. can deliver us

  1513. time and time again

  1514. but it does not

  1515. depend on us.

  1516. The assurance,

  1517. the basis

  1518. for our deliverance

1519. is not you are worthy,

  1520. you are lovely,

  1521. or you are righteous.

  1522. righteous.

  1523. No, it is.

  1524. I am the Lord.

  1525. I am the Lord.

  1526. That's why

  1527. I will deliver you.

  1528. That's why

  1529. I will save you

  1530. and that's why

  1531. I will redeem you.

  1532. That's what God

  1533. has done for us

  1534. in Jesus.

  1535. So He's called

  1536. our Redeemer.

  1537. He paid the debt

1538. that we could not pay.

  1539. And because of that,

  1540. because our Redeemer

  1541. died on the cross

  1542. for our sins,

  1543. because our Redeemer

  1544. signed the check,

  1545. we are now stamped

1546. with the Spirit of God.

  1547. It's God's declaration

  1548. on us

  1549. paid in full.

  1550. my sin,

  1551. oh the bliss

  1552. of this glorious thought,

  1553. my sin,

  1554. not in part,

  1555. but the whole,

1556. is nailed to the cross

  1557. and I bear it

  1558. no more.

  1559. Praise the Lord,

  1560. praise the Lord,

  1561. oh my soul.

  1562. Let's pray.

  1563. God,

  1564. we thank you.

  1565. God,

  1566. thank you that

1567. even though we are fickle,

  1568. that you are faithful,

  1569. that you are unchanging,

  1570. and that your name

  1571. is the Lord,

  1572. Yahweh.

  1573. God,

  1574. because of that,

  1575. you deserve all glory,

  1576. all praise,

  1577. all honor,

  1578. all of our lives,

  1579. all that we have,

  1580. all that we are

  1581. belong to you.

1582. You are our gracious master

1583. and you give us rest

  1584. for our souls.

  1585. Thank you.

1586. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1587. Amen.
