  1. Good morning, my name is Sean. For those of you who don't know me, I'm one of the pastors of Trinity

  2. Cambridge Church, and it is my absolute joy and privilege to preach God's Word to you this morning.

  3. Please turn with me in your Bibles to Exodus chapter 11. If you're not familiar with your

    Exodus 11 chapter mention

  4. Bibles, or if you don't have one, if you raise your hand, we have some ushers in the back who

  5. can bring you a copy of a Bible you could use. Exodus is the second book in the Bible.

  6. Chapter numbers are marked with large numbers. Chapter 11, we're going all the way through to

    Numbers 11 chapter mention

  7. chapter 12, verse 28. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  8. Father, we thank you that you have given us your Word, that we might know you, that we might know

  9. your will, that we might know your salvation. And we thank you that in your Word, you give us not only

  10. instructions, but also pictures, stories, that deeply impress upon us your love displayed for us in Jesus Christ.

  11. we pray that you would

  12. awe us again.

  13. Strike us with a sense of wonder

  14. again.

  15. And your love

  16. at your saving grace this morning.

  17. In Jesus' name we pray.

  18. Amen.

  19. Amen.

  20. Exodus 11, verse 1, going through chapter 12, verse 28.

    Exodus 11:1

  21. The Lord said to Moses,

  22. Yet one plague more I will bring upon Pharaoh and upon Egypt.

  23. Afterward, he will let you go from here.

  24. When he lets you go, he will drive you away completely.

  25. Speak now in the hearing of the people that they ask every man of his neighbor and every woman of her neighbor for silver and gold jewelry.

  26. And the Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians.

  27. Moreover, the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants, and in the sight of the people.

  28. So Moses said,

  29. Thus says the Lord,

  30. About midnight I will go out in the midst of Egypt,

  31. and every firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die.

  32. From the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne,

  33. even to the firstborn of the slave girl who is behind the hand mill,

  34. and all the firstborn of the cattle.

  35. There shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt,

  36. such as there has never been,

  37. nor ever will be again.

  38. But not a dog shall growl against any of the people of Israel,

  39. either man or beast,

  40. that you may know that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.

  41. And all these your servants shall come down to me and bow down to me,

  42. saying,

  43. Get out, you and all the people who follow you,

  44. and after that I will go out.

  45. And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger,

  46. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  47. Pharaoh will not listen to you,

  48. that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.

  49. Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh,

  50. and the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart,

  51. and he did not let the people of Israel go out of his land.

  52. The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,

  53. This month shall be for you the beginning of months.

  54. It shall be the first month of the year for you.

  55. Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month,

  56. every man shall take a lamb according to their father's houses,

  57. a lamb for a household.

  58. And if the household is too small for a lamb,

  59. then he and his nearest neighbor shall take according to the number of persons,

  60. according to what each can eat,

  61. you shall make your account for the lamb.

  62. Your lamb shall be without blemish,

  63. a male,

  64. a year old.

  65. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats,

  66. and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month,

  67. when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel

  68. shall kill their lambs at twilight.

  69. Then they shall take some of the blood

  70. and put it on the two doorposts

  71. and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.

  72. They shall eat the flesh that night,

  73. roasted on the fire,

  74. with unleavened bread and bitter herbs,

  75. they shall eat it.

  76. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water,

  77. but roasted its head with its legs and its inner parts.

  78. And you shall let none of it remain until the morning.

  79. Anything that remains until the morning you shall burn.

  80. In this manner you shall eat it,

  81. with your belt fastened,

  82. your sandals on your feet,

  83. and your staff in your hand.

  84. And you shall eat it in haste.

  85. It is the Lord's Passover.

  86. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night,

  87. and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt,

  88. both man and beast,

  89. and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments.

  90. I am the Lord.

  91. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are.

  92. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you.

  93. And no plague will befall you to destroy you

  94. when I strike the land of Egypt.

  95. This day shall be for you a memorial day,

  96. and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord.

  97. Throughout your generations, as a statute forever,

  98. you shall keep it as a feast.

  99. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread.

  100. And on the first day you shall remove leaven out of your houses.

  101. For if anyone eats what is leavened,

  102. from the first day until the seventh day,

  103. that person shall be cut off from Israel.

  104. On the first day you shall hold a holy assembly,

  105. and on the seventh day a holy assembly.

  106. No work shall be done on those days.

  107. But what everyone needs to eat,

  108. that alone may be prepared by you.

  109. And you shall observe the feast of unleavened bread.

  110. For on this very day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt.

  111. Therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations

  112. as a statute forever.

  113. In the first month,

  114. from the fourteenth day of the month at evening,

  115. you shall eat unleavened bread

  116. until the twenty-first day of the month at evening.

  117. For seven days no leaven is to be found in your houses.

  118. If anyone eats what is leavened,

  119. that person will be cut off from the congregation of Israel,

  120. whether he is a sojourner or a native of the land.

  121. You shall eat nothing leavened.

  122. In all your dwelling places you shall eat unleavened bread.

  123. Then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them,

  124. Go and select lambs for yourselves according to your clans

  125. and kill the Passover lamb.

  126. Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin

  127. and touch the lintel and the two doorposts

  128. with the blood that is in the basin.

  129. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning,

  130. for the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians.

  131. And when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts,

  132. the Lord will pass over the door

  133. and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you.

  134. You shall observe this rite as a statute for you

  135. and for your sons forever.

  136. And when you come to the land that the Lord will give you,

  137. as he has promised, you shall keep this service.

  138. And when your children say to you,

  139. What do you mean by this service?

  140. You shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover.

  141. For he passed over the houses of the people of Israel and Egypt

  142. when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses.

  143. And the people bowed their heads and worshipped.

  144. Then the people of Israel went and did so,

  145. as the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron.

  146. So they did.

  147. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  148. In this passage, we're going to see how the Lord sets apart his people

  149. by the sacrifice of the Passover.

  150. And we're going to focus first on their identity as God's firstborn son,

  151. and then the Passover lamb,

  152. and then on the unleavened bread in turn.

  153. In the preceding passage, if you weren't with us last week,

  154. Pharaoh refused to let Israel go along with their children and livestock.

  155. And he said to Moses in 10, 28,

  156. Get away from me.

  157. Take care never to see my face again.

  158. For on the day you see my face, you shall die.

  159. And Moses essentially said to him,

  160. As you wish.

  161. But Moses hasn't yet left Pharaoh's presence.

  162. That will happen a little later in chapter 11.

  163. And before he leaves Pharaoh's court,

  164. he has one more thing that he wants to share from the Lord.

  165. And he says in 11 verse 1,

  166. The Lord said to Moses,

  167. Yet one plague more I will bring upon Pharaoh and upon Egypt.

  168. Afterward, he will let you go from here.

  169. When he lets you go, he will drive you away completely.

  170. Chapter 11 verses 1 to 10 are structured chiastically.

  171. The first half is mirrored by the matching elements in the second half of the passage

  172. with the middle of the passage in this case,

  173. verse 6, standing out alone by itself to bring attention to it.

  174. So it says in verse 1, chapter 11,

  175. The Lord speaks and the Pharaoh,

  176. The Lord says that Pharaoh will let Israel go after the final plague.

  177. And then that's matched by verses 9 to 10,

  178. where the Lord speaks again.

  179. And he says Pharaoh will not let Israel go unless the final plague comes.

  180. And then in chapter 11 verses 2 to 3,

  181. Israel and Moses enjoy the favor of the Egyptians.

  182. And then likewise in verse 8,

  183. Israel and Moses enjoy the favor of the Egyptians.

  184. And then in verses 4 to 5,

  185. Moses speaks.

  186. And then he says the firstborn males of both man and beast of Egypt will die.

  187. And then in verse 8,

  188. Moses speaks again.

  189. But the firstborn males of neither man nor beast of Israel will die.

  190. And that leaves verse 6 by self,

  191. where he says there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt.

  192. And this is significant because this cry will not be the cry of the Israelites.

  193. Previously, because of the harsh Egyptian taskmasters,

  194. they said in Exodus 3, verses 7 and 9,

    Exodus 3:7

  195. that the cry of the people of Israel came up to the Lord.

  196. But now, after the final plague,

  197. after the Lord's intervention,

  198. it will be the cry of the Egyptians that fills all the land of Egypt.

  199. So the structure of this passage is highlighting the great reversal that's happening.

  200. Previously, Pharaoh and his servants arrogantly defied Moses and dismissed his demands.

  201. But it says in verse 3 now that the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt,

  202. in the sight of Pharaoh's servants and in the sight of the people.

  203. And then in verse 8,

  204. Moses predicts that after the final plague,

  205. all these your servants shall come down to me and bow down to me,

  206. saying,

  207. Get out,

  208. you and all the people who follow you.

  209. So previously,

  210. in Exodus 1, 15,

  211. Pharaoh decreed that every son that is born to the Hebrews

  212. must be cast into the Nile.

  213. But now, in the final disaster that God brings,

  214. every firstborn male in the land of Egypt will die,

  215. both man and beast.

  216. But no harm will come at all to the Israelites.

  217. When Pharaoh killed Israel's sons,

  218. he was not merely acting against Israel,

  219. but he was ultimately acting against God.

  220. Because as God says in Exodus 4, 22,

  221. Israel is my firstborn son.

  222. And I say to you,

  223. to Pharaoh,

  224. let my son go that he may serve me.

  225. If you refuse to let him go,

  226. behold,

  227. I will kill your firstborn son.

  228. So this is the retribution that God has threatened to Pharaoh

  229. and to his stubborn Egyptians.

  230. But the tables have now turned.

  231. There's a great reversal happening.

  232. This, by the way,

  233. is the reason why we,

  234. as God's followers,

  235. never should avenge ourselves upon our enemies.

  236. Romans 12, 19 says,

  237. Beloved,

  238. never avenge yourselves,

  239. but leave it to the wrath of God.

  240. For it is written,

  241. vengeance is mine.

  242. I will repay,

  243. says the Lord.

  244. The reason why Christians can endure suffering and persecution without retaliating

  245. is not because we don't care about justice,

  246. even justice for ourselves.

  247. It's not because it doesn't hurt us,

  248. and we don't mind the suffering,

  249. but it's because the Lord has said,

  250. the vengeance is mine.

  251. The Israelites suffered under the cruel slavery of the Egyptians.

  252. They watched helplessly as their infant sons were exposed to the Nile,

  253. as they drowned or were consumed by wild beasts.

  254. They had no power,

  255. but the Lord is powerful,

  256. and he will not stand idly by when his firstborn son, Israel,

  257. is battered and abused.

  258. So here, Israel's identity as God's firstborn son points to the fact that they are a nation

  259. that is specially set apart for God.

  260. There are many children in this world.

  261. All over the world, there are children,

  262. but only three of them are my daughters.

  263. I have a special relationship with them because they belong to me,

  264. and I to them.

  265. I am their father and no one else's.

  266. Father, no one else calls me father.

  267. That's similar to what God is saying here about Israel.

  268. Israel has been, my people, God is saying,

  269. have been set apart for me among the nations.

  270. They belong to me,

  271. and we as Christians also belong to God's people Israel.

  272. In Romans 9, Paul writes that the Christians are,

  273. by faith in Christ, spiritual descendants of Abraham,

  274. the children of promise.

  275. And so we are all members of God's holy people,

  276. so then we can rightly apply this passage to ourselves as well.

  277. So God says of us then,

  278. Israel is my firstborn son,

  279. and I say to you,

  280. let my son go that they may serve me.

  281. That's in fact what God has done here.

  282. He has freed us from our slavery to sin.

  283. He has delivered us from the bondage of the enemy,

  284. so that we might serve him.

  285. The spirit of God within you,

  286. by whom we cry to God,

  287. Abba, Father,

  288. is God's stamp and seal upon our very souls,

  289. declaring,

  290. mine,

  291. my people,

  292. my son.

  293. And that's why we as God's holy people,

  294. consecrated to him,

  295. for his special purposes,

  296. ought to live holy lives.

  297. You shall be holy,

  298. for I am holy.

  299. We see further evidence of Israel being set apart

  300. as God's people

  301. in the institution of the Passover in chapter 12,

  302. verses 1 to 13.

  303. The Lord says to Moses and Aaron in verse 2,

  304. this month shall be for you the beginning of months.

  305. It shall be the first month of the year for you.

  306. The expression this month is literally this new moon,

  307. because they used the lunar calendar.

  308. And their exodus from Egypt

  309. is such a life-changing and nation-shaping event

  310. that God literally changes their calendar,

  311. gives them a new calendar system.

  312. From now on, he says,

  313. the month of exodus from Egypt,

  314. the month of your exiting Egypt,

  315. which typically falls on March or April in our reckoning,

  316. that shall be the first month of the year

  317. to signal the reality

  318. that this is a new beginning for the people of God.

  319. Then in the following verses,

  320. God gives the Israelites instructions

  321. for how to observe the Passover.

  322. On the 10th day of the first month of the year,

  323. each household is to pick out a lamb

  324. to slaughter and eat.

  325. The lamb is to be carefully chosen.

  326. It has to be a lamb that is without blemish,

  327. a male, a year old.

  328. A year old suggests that the lamb is fully grown,

  329. it's mature, but it's in its prime.

  330. The lamb is not senile, it's not old.

  331. It's in good health.

  332. And the carefully selected lamb then is to be sacrificed,

  333. killed on the 14th day of the month at twilight.

  334. Everyone is supposed to kill the lamb at the same time.

  335. And then according to verses 7 to 10,

  336. they are to take some of the blood of the lamb

  337. and then put it on the top and the sides of the door.

  338. And they are to roast the lamb on the fire.

  339. It was required that the lamb be roasted by fire,

  340. not consumed raw or boiled in water.

  341. It was also supposed to be consumed

  342. with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.

  343. The significance of the unleavened bread,

  344. I will explain a little later,

  345. but the bitter herbs serves as a reminder

  346. of the harsh slavery that Israel was under in Egypt.

  347. The only other time that the word bitter

  348. is used in the book of Exodus

  349. is in Exodus 1, 13 to 14,

  350. where it says the Egyptians ruthlessly made

  351. the people of Israel work as slaves

  352. and made their lives bitter with hard service.

  353. So as they consumed the bitter herbs,

  354. they are to be reminded of the bitter slavery

  355. that they were suffering under in Egypt.

  356. And the lamb was supposed to be consumed in its entirety.

  357. Nothing was to remain until the morning.

  358. And anything that did remain until the morning

  359. was to be burned,

  360. lest people found to be eating leftovers

  361. and throwing out some of the leftovers to the trash,

  362. and lest the Passover meal seem like a common, ordinary meal.

  363. They are to burn it, all the remainders.

  364. So these detailed instructions

  365. for both the preparation and the consumption of the lamb

  366. show that this is no ordinary feast.

  367. It's a sacrifice.

  368. This is not Taco Tuesday

  369. where you just happen to eat tacos.

  370. It's not a day in the year

  371. when the Israelites just happen to eat lamb.

  372. It's also not even like Thanksgiving turkey.

  373. That's a little more similar

  374. because you're commemorating something there,

  375. but it's still not an adequate comparison

  376. because the turkey itself

  377. has no sacrificial significance.

  378. The Passover is not just a celebration.

  379. It's not just a meal.

  380. It's, as verse 27 clearly says,

  381. the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover.

  382. And if it's a sacrifice,

  383. it serves two main functions.

  384. It atones for sin,

  385. and it consecrates the people

  386. on whose behalf the lamb is sacrificed.

  387. That's why the offered lamb must be without blemish.

  388. Later in Exodus 29 and 1

  389. and throughout the book of Leviticus,

  390. instructions for sacrificial offerings

  391. specifically require that the animals be without blemish.

  392. A sacrifice offered to God as worship to him

  393. cannot be blemished.

  394. Likewise, putting the blood of the lamb around the door

  395. also suggests that this is a sacrifice

  396. intended to set Israel apart

  397. from the nation of Egypt,

  398. from other people.

  399. Later in Exodus 29,

  400. when the Aaronic priests are being set apart,

  401. consecrated for God to serve in the tabernacle,

  402. a ram is sacrificed,

  403. and some of its blood is sprinkled on Aaron and his sons

  404. as a way of marking them,

  405. consecrating them for God's service.

  406. And it says in 29, 33,

  407. that the ram was used to make atonement

  408. at the Aaronic priests' ordination and consecration.

  409. So then here in the Passover also,

  410. the lamb without blemish is sacrificed

  411. to make atonement for our sins,

  412. and then so that the firstborn males of Egypt,

  413. or of Israel rather,

  414. might be spared from the death that is coming upon them.

  415. And the blood of the lamb,

  416. smeared around the lamb,

  417. consecrates or sets apart

  418. those who are within the house,

  419. marking them as God's own special possession

  420. and therefore protected from the plague.

  421. Verses 12 to 13 confirm this.

  422. God says,

  423. for I will pass through the land of Egypt that night,

  424. and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt,

  425. both man and beast.

  426. And on all the gods of Egypt,

  427. I will execute judgments.

  428. I am the Lord.

  429. The blood shall be assigned for you

  430. on the houses where you are.

  431. And when I see the blood,

  432. I will pass over you,

  433. and no plague will befall you to destroy you

  434. when I strike the land of Egypt.

  435. I don't know if you caught the interesting reference there

  436. to the gods of Egypt.

  437. This is the first time that the false gods of Egypt,

  438. apart from Pharaoh,

  439. are explicitly referenced.

  440. God says,

  441. I will execute judgments on all the gods of Egypt.

  442. So all the plagues that God has been inflicting upon Egypt

  443. to this point,

  444. and especially this pending final plague,

  445. the 10th plague,

  446. are ways in which Yahweh, the Lord,

  447. is executing judgments on all the gods of Egypt.

  448. So some people have tried ingeniously

  449. to connect each of the 10 plagues

  450. to a specific Egyptian deity,

  451. but the identification is not so easy

  452. or neat with some of them.

  453. And sometimes the comparison is also anachronistic.

  454. It doesn't fit because those gods that we know of now,

  455. Egyptian gods,

  456. were not necessarily worshipped at the time of Moses.

  457. But because it says that God is executing judgments

  458. to all the gods of Egypt,

  459. you can make a general connection,

  460. and some of the identifications are pretty easy.

  461. So this, for example,

  462. the plague,

  463. the first plague,

  464. the blood,

  465. turning the Nile into blood,

  466. neither the Egyptian god of the Nile,

  467. Hapi,

  468. nor the Egyptian guardian of the Nile,

  469. Khunum,

  470. could stop Yahweh from turning the Nile into blood.

  471. The Egyptian goddess of fertility,

  472. Heket,

  473. who takes the form of a frog,

  474. could not control the Lord

  475. from bringing a swarm of frogs

  476. overwhelming the land of Egypt.

  477. The Egyptian god of the earth,

  478. Geb,

  479. could not stop Yahweh

  480. from striking the dust of the earth

  481. and turning it into gnats

  482. to torment the Egyptians.

  483. The Egyptian goddess Hathor,

  484. who is often depicted as cattle,

  485. a cow,

  486. could not stop the livestock

  487. from being killed

  488. by disease of the Lord.

  489. The Egyptian god of the sky,

  490. Horus,

  491. or the goddess of the sky,

  492. Nut,

  493. and the god of the storm,

  494. Seth,

  495. could not stop the Lord

  496. from bringing the destructive hail thunderstorm

  497. upon Egypt.

  498. And the Egyptian god of fertility

  499. and agriculture,

  500. Osiris,

  501. could do nothing to stop Yahweh

  502. from destroying the remaining crop

  503. with the locusts.

  504. The Egyptian sun god,

  505. Ra,

  506. could not bring even a ray of sunlight

  507. to shine on Egypt

  508. when Yahweh blanketed with utter darkness.

  509. And even Pharaoh,

  510. who claimed to be God,

  511. the son of Ra,

  512. in fact,

  513. could do nothing to protect

  514. even his own firstborn son,

  515. who's supposed to be divine,

  516. who's supposed to be the next Pharaoh,

  517. to rule over Egypt

  518. from the final plague

  519. that the Lord is about to bring.

  520. It's a powerful statement

  521. that the Lord is making

  522. over and over again

  523. with these plagues.

  524. The Lord is setting himself

  525. apart from these false gods of Egypt

  526. and when he brings judgments upon them

  527. and he's declaring to them,

  528. I am the Lord.

  529. And as he said in Exodus 9, 14,

  530. there is none like me

  531. in all the earth.

  532. None in all the earth.

  533. What are the quote-unquote gods

  534. that you rely on

  535. to provide for you

  536. and protect you?

  537. Buddha?

  538. Allah?

  539. Shiva?

  540. Maybe your ancestral spirits?

  541. Maybe it's no religious deed at all.

  542. Maybe it's your savings account.

  543. Your good looks.

  544. Your intellect.

  545. Your spouse.

  546. When you make any of these things

  547. your God

  548. and you put your trust in them

  549. rather than in the living God,

  550. when you love and cherish them

  551. more than you do

  552. the God who loves you,

  553. they will inevitably disappoint you

  554. and fail you.

  555. Because God will prove

  556. over and over again.

  557. Because God admits no rivals.

  558. He will demonstrate in your life

  559. again and again,

  560. I am the Lord.

  561. There is none like me

  562. in all the earth.

  563. And in setting himself apart

  564. in this way,

  565. the Lord God is also

  566. setting his people apart,

  567. Israel apart.

  568. The blood shall be assigned

  569. for you on the houses

  570. where you are

  571. and when I see the blood

  572. I will pass over you

  573. and no plague will befall you.

  574. Egypt will be stricken

  575. but Israelites will be spared

  576. because they are atoned for

  577. and covered by the Passover sacrifice.

  578. Egypt is not God's people

  579. but Israel is God's people.

  580. God makes a distinction

  581. and sets his people apart

  582. for himself as a special possession.

  583. And by God's grace,

  584. now because of what Christ

  585. has done on the cross,

  586. all those who put their faith in Christ

  587. from every nation

  588. now belong to God.

  589. And in this way,

  590. God's people are set apart

  591. by the Passover lamb.

  592. And God's people are also set apart

  593. by the unleavened bread.

  594. After observing the Passover,

  595. the Israelites are instructed

  596. to observe a seven-day feast

  597. of unleavened bread.

  598. This is on the heel of the Passover.

  599. They're all part of the big,

  600. one big feast of Passover

  601. or a five-feast of unleavened bread.

  602. And then in verses 14 and 20,

  603. they tell them during the feast,

  604. they are to remove leaven

  605. out of their homes.

  606. For if anyone eats what is leavened

  607. from the first day

  608. until the seventh day,

  609. that person shall be cut off

  610. from Israel.

  611. And they are to observe

  612. a holy assembly on the first day

  613. and the seventh day

  614. of the feast of unleavened bread.

  615. They are to not work,

  616. observe a rest.

  617. They have rest.

  618. And you might wonder,

  619. what's the deal with leaven?

  620. I mean, it's just good fermented

  621. sourdough bread, right?

  622. I mean, what's wrong with leaven?

  623. And there's a reason for this.

  624. You find out later in verse 34

  625. why God commands this feast

  626. of unleavened bread.

  627. And it's because the Egyptians

  628. were so urgent

  629. to make the Israelites leave

  630. in a haste because of the plagues

  631. that the Israelites, it says,

  632. took their dough

  633. before it was leavened.

  634. When they were leaving

  635. in their initial exodus

  636. from Egypt,

  637. they did not have time to wait

  638. to let the bread rise.

  639. And so they took unleavened bread

  640. as provisions for themselves

  641. in their journey.

  642. This is similar to the command

  643. earlier in verse 11

  644. that we saw of how Israelites

  645. are to eat the Passover lamb.

  646. It says they were to eat

  647. with their belt fastened,

  648. their sandals on their feet,

  649. and their staff in their hand

  650. in haste.

  651. Why do the Israelis

  652. have to eat that way?

  653. They needed to be ready

  654. to leave at a moment's notice.

  655. They had to have their shoes on.

  656. They had to have their loins

  657. girdled up, their belt.

  658. They had to have their staff

  659. in place already

  660. so that in the moment's notice

  661. when there is the release,

  662. you may go,

  663. you may leave Egypt.

  664. They can leave right away.

  665. And so by eating unleavened bread

  666. each year during the Feast

  667. of Unleavened Bread,

  668. the Israelites were to remember

  669. the same truth.

  670. So this exhortation

  671. of how to eat the bread,

  672. like I mean how to eat

  673. the Passover lamb

  674. with girdled loins

  675. or with your belts fastened,

  676. that phrase is often used

  677. actually throughout

  678. the New Testament as well

  679. in a figurative sense.

  680. And it's used to tell Christians

  681. that we ought to have

  682. our belts fastened

  683. when we live,

  684. figuratively,

  685. meaning we ought to be alert.

  686. We ought to be sober-minded.

  687. We ought to be prepared

  688. for action

  689. because this world

  690. is not our home.

  691. We should have

  692. an eternal perspective

  693. rather than thinking

  694. and living like this world

  695. is all there is,

  696. like this life

  697. is all there is.

  698. We can't settle

  699. and be comfortable.

  700. Rather,

  701. we ought to always have

  702. the mindset of a pilgrim,

  703. someone journeying

  704. with their girdles fastened.

  705. That's what

  706. the unleavened bread serves

  707. to remind us of.

  708. Cleansing out the leaven

  709. also has a symbolic significance

  710. because leaven,

  711. as we might assume

  712. that leaven is yeast,

  713. but yeast and leaven

  714. are actually two different things.

  715. In the ancient world,

  716. yeast was very rare.

  717. And so what they did

  718. was use leaven

  719. to ferment their dough.

  720. Fermented dough

  721. from an existing,

  722. like an old batch,

  723. some piece of it,

  724. they would set it apart

  725. to use as leaven

  726. and they would mix it

  727. with the new dough

  728. and then that would then

  729. ferment the new bread.

  730. So that's leaven.

  731. And so the more you do that,

  732. of course,

  733. there is a risk,

  734. there's a danger

  735. of with each subsequent bread

  736. an increased risk

  737. of mold growing

  738. and harmful bacteria

  739. growing on it

  740. because it's literally

  741. like you're taking

  742. the same piece of bread

  743. and using it

  744. over and over again.

  745. And so in the same way,

  746. then the month

  747. of their exodus

  748. from Egypt

  749. on the first month

  750. of the year,

  751. because it indicates

  752. a new beginning

  753. for God's people,

  754. they are to cleanse

  755. the leaven

  756. from their pantries

  757. and begin again

  758. with the fresh batch.

  759. And in this way,

  760. because of how

  761. only just a little bit

  762. of leaven

  763. leavens the entire

  764. lump of bread,

  765. this became a symbol

  766. to represent

  767. how sin and evil,

  768. just a little bit of it

  769. can so quickly spread

  770. and infect

  771. an entire community.

  772. And so in 1 Corinthians

  773. 5, 6-8,

  774. Paul references

  775. the feast

  776. of unleavened bread

  777. and when telling

  778. the Corinthians

  779. to purge their church

  780. of sexual immorality,

  781. which was rampant there,

  782. he says this,

  783. Do you not know

  784. that a little leaven

  785. leavens the whole lump?

  786. Cleanse out the old leaven

  787. that you may be

  788. a new lump

  789. as you really are unleavened.

  790. For Christ,

  791. our Passover lamb,

  792. has been sacrificed.

  793. Let us therefore

  794. celebrate the festival,

  795. not with the old leaven,

  796. the leaven of malice

  797. and evil,

  798. but with the unleavened

  799. bread of sincerity

  800. and truth.

  801. So brothers and sisters,

  802. this is why

  803. we as a church

  804. must take holiness seriously,

  805. why we must be

  806. a holy people.

  807. Unrepentant sin

  808. is like leaven

  809. that leavens

  810. the whole lump

  811. of bread.

  812. It's like cancer

  813. that spreads

  814. and destroys

  815. the entire body.

  816. You can't afford

  817. to leave

  818. even a cell of it.

  819. But we as God's people

  820. have been joined

  821. to Christ

  822. and are therefore

  823. God's firstborn son.

  824. We have been atoned for

  825. and marked out

  826. by the blood of the lamb.

  827. We have been set apart

  828. as God's chosen possession

  829. by the unleavened bread.

  830. And as people

  831. who have been set apart,

  832. our lives

  833. ought to reflect that

  834. to show that

  835. we belong to God

  836. because the Passover lamb

  837. has been sacrificed.

  838. Paul is here

  839. making,

  840. in 1 Corinthians,

  841. an explicit biblical

  842. theological connection

  843. between the Passover lamb

  844. and Jesus.

  845. He's telling us

  846. that the Passover lamb

  847. pointed to

  848. and was fulfilled

  849. by Jesus Christ.

  850. That's why we read

  851. in our Assurance of Pardon

  852. today

  853. from 1 Peter 1,

  854. 18-19,

  855. it says that

  856. Christ is

  857. the lamb

  858. without blemish

  859. or spot

  860. by whose blood

  861. we have been ransomed

  862. from the futile,

  863. sinful ways.

  864. Jesus was without sin

  865. and therefore

  866. he was fit

  867. to be the unblemished

  868. Passover lamb

  869. that is sacrificed

  870. for our atonement

  871. and consecration.

  872. So imagine

  873. with me for a second

  874. the original night

  875. of the Passover

  876. for the Israelites.

  877. The Israelites

  878. are to kill their lambs

  879. at twilight.

  880. The whole process

  881. that then is carried out

  882. in the dark,

  883. it's at night.

  884. And you could imagine

  885. the fear and trembling

  886. among the Israelites

  887. as they take meticulous care

  888. to slay the lamb,

  889. they drain the blood,

  890. they roast the lamb,

  891. they are careful

  892. to eat it

  893. without breaking

  894. any bones

  895. and they're doing

  896. all of this

  897. and they take

  898. some of the blood

  899. and then they

  900. daub it

  901. around the doorposts

  902. and since

  903. it doesn't specify

  904. how much blood

  905. you're supposed

  906. to put on it,

  907. you can imagine

  908. there are probably

  909. some very overzealous

  910. and fearful Israelites

  911. who are just

  912. you know

  913. lathering the blood.

  914. Make sure you cover it all.

  915. I don't want

  916. the destroyer coming in.

  917. There's fear.

  918. There's anticipation.

  919. The Israelite families

  920. probably don't sleep

  921. a wink that night

  922. and in the middle

  923. of the night

  924. they hear

  925. shrill cries

  926. in their neighboring

  927. Egyptian homes

  928. indicating that

  929. there's some death

  930. in the house

  931. and then

  932. the Israelite families

  933. are gripped with fear.

  934. Are we next?

  935. Maybe some

  936. older firstborn sons

  937. who realize

  938. what's going on

  939. ask their parents

  940. am I next?

  941. Are we gonna be okay?

  942. And the parents

  943. reassure them

  944. we're gonna be okay.

  945. But why?

  946. Because the blood

  947. of the lamb

  948. is on our door.

  949. the Lord

  950. passes over

  951. the houses

  952. of Israel.

  953. The sun rises.

  954. There's not a single

  955. death in Israelite homes.

  956. In fact

  957. not even a dog

  958. growled

  959. against

  960. the Israelite

  961. families

  962. or their animals.

  963. Why not?

  964. It's not because

  965. the Israelites

  966. are a superior race

  967. or an ethnic group.

  968. And it's not because

  969. the Israelites

  970. are more ethical

  971. or more righteous

  972. than the Egyptians.

  973. The reason

  974. the only reason

  975. is because

  976. they were chosen

  977. and marked

  978. by the blood

  979. of the lamb.

  980. The same is true

  981. for all Christians.

  982. Do you live in fear

  983. of God's punishment?

  984. Do you harbor

  985. lingering doubt

  986. in your heart

  987. that your sins

  988. can ever be pardoned?

  989. Do you doubt

  990. that God

  991. can ever love you?

  992. If God really knew me

  993. if God really knew my heart

  994. if God really knew my past

  995. he would not love me.

  996. He would not want

  997. anything good for me.

  998. Do you see

  999. the blood

  1000. that Christ

  1001. the Passover lamb

  1002. shed

  1003. on the cross

  1004. for you?

  1005. You are covered

  1006. by his blood.

  1007. There can be

  1008. no condemnation

  1009. for you.

  1010. There can be

  1011. no punishment

  1012. for you.

  1013. There on the cross

  1014. is the indelible message

  1015. from the Lord God

  1016. saying

  1017. I have chosen you.

  1018. I have marked you

  1019. as mine.

  1020. There

  1021. is the blood

  1022. of the lamb.

  1023. And that's

  1024. what we remember

  1025. when we gather

  1026. in his name

  1027. week after week

  1028. to hear

  1029. the same

  1030. good news

  1031. of Jesus

  1032. proclaimed

  1033. over

  1034. and over again

  1035. to break

  1036. the same bread

  1037. and to drink

  1038. the same juice

  1039. proclaiming

  1040. the death

  1041. of Christ

  1042. over

  1043. and over again

  1044. because we need

  1045. to be reminded

  1046. of this

  1047. every single

  1048. day.

  1049. So let's

  1050. remember

  1051. 1 Corinthians

  1052. 11 26

  1053. for as often

  1054. as you remember

  1055. as you eat

  1056. this bread

  1057. and drink

  1058. the cup

  1059. you proclaim

  1060. the Lord's

  1061. death

  1062. until

  1063. he comes.

  1064. So let us

  1065. remember his

  1066. death

  1067. let's proclaim

  1068. his resurrection

  1069. and await

  1070. his coming

  1071. in glory.

  1072. Let's pray.

  1073. Father

  1074. thank you

  1075. for your

  1076. love.

  1077. Thank you

  1078. that you

  1079. do not

  1080. call us

  1081. to be a

  1082. holy people

  1083. so that

  1084. we might

  1085. qualify

  1086. to be your

  1087. people

  1088. but you

  1089. call us

  1090. to be

  1091. holy

  1092. because

  1093. you

  1094. have

  1095. already

  1096. chosen

  1097. us

  1098. because

  1099. you

  1100. have

  1101. already

  1102. marked

  1103. us

  1104. with the

  1105. blood

  1106. of the

  1107. lamb

  1108. because

  1109. you

  1110. have

  1111. already

  1112. called

  1113. us

  1114. your

  1115. own

  1116. so Lord

  1117. let us

  1118. pursue

  1119. holiness

  1120. let us

  1121. live

  1122. holy lives

  1123. not out of

  1124. fear and

  1125. insecurity

  1126. but out of

  1127. great love

  1128. for you

  1129. with great

  1130. security

  1131. assurance

  1132. and

  1133. gratefulness
