  1. Now we are in Exodus chapter 17, verse 8, going to chapter 18, verse 27.

    Exodus 17:8

  2. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  3. Heavenly Father, we believe that your word is truth.

  4. And because of that, that your word is good.

  5. And we ask now that you would quiet our hearts before the reading and preaching of your word.

  6. That you'd incline our ears, our hearts toward you.

  7. And we ask that you would speak, address us as your people.

  8. That we might live in accordance with your will.

  9. That we believe you will speak specifically to the individuals here and to us as a church.

  10. Speak, Father, in an unmistakable way.

  11. That we might know that we are hearing your voice.

  12. In your word.

  13. In Jesus' name we pray.

  14. Amen.

  15. If you are able, please stand for the reading of God's word from Exodus 17, verse 18, 27.

  16. Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.

  17. So Moses said to Joshua, choose for us men and go out and fight with Amalek.

  18. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.

  19. So Joshua did as Moses told him and fought with Amalek.

  20. While Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

  21. Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed.

  22. And whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.

  23. But Moses' hands grew weary.

  24. So they took a stone and put it under him.

  25. And he sat on it.

  26. While Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side and the other on the other side.

  27. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

  28. And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.

  29. Then the Lord said to Moses, write this as a memorial in a book.

  30. And recited in the ears of Joshua that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.

  31. And Moses built an altar and called it the name,

  32. The Lord is my banner, saying,

  33. A hand upon the throne of the Lord.

  34. The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

  35. Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law,

  36. heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel, his people.

  37. How the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.

  38. And now Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, had taken Zipporah, Moses' wife,

  39. after he had sent her home, along with her two sons.

  40. The name of the one was Gershon, for he said,

  41. I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.

  42. And the name of the other, Eliezer, for he said,

  43. The God of my father was my help,

  44. and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.

  45. Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness,

  46. where he was encamped at the mountain of God.

  47. And when he sent word to Moses,

  48. I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.

  49. Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him.

  50. And they asked each other of their welfare and went into the tent.

  51. Then Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake,

  52. all the hardship that had come upon them in the way, and how the Lord had delivered them.

  53. And Jethro rejoiced for all the good that the Lord had done to Israel,

  54. in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.

  55. Jethro said,

  56. Blessed be the Lord who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians,

  57. and out of the hand of Pharaoh,

  58. and has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

  59. Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods,

  60. because in this affair they dealt arrogantly with the people.

  61. And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God,

  62. and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.

  63. The next day Moses sat to judge the people,

  64. and the people stood around Moses from morning till evening,

  65. when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people.

  66. He said,

  67. What is this that you are doing for the people?

  68. Why do you sit alone,

  69. and all the people stand around you from morning till evening?

  70. And Moses said to his father-in-law,

  71. Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

  72. When they have a dispute,

  73. they come to me,

  74. and I decide between one person and another,

  75. and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws.

  76. Moses' father-in-law said to him,

  77. What you are doing is not good.

  78. You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out,

  79. for the thing is too heavy for you.

  80. You are not able to do it alone.

  81. Now obey my voice,

  82. I will give you advice,

  83. and God be with you.

  84. You shall represent the people before God,

  85. and bring their cases to God,

  86. and you shall warn them about the statutes and the laws,

  87. and make them know the way in which they must walk,

  88. and what they must do.

  89. Moreover, look for able men from all the people,

  90. men who fear God,

  91. who are trustworthy and hate a bribe,

  92. and place such men over the people

  93. as chiefs of thousands,

  94. of hundreds,

  95. of fifties,

  96. and of tens.

  97. And let them judge the people at all times.

  98. Every great matter they shall bring to you,

  99. but any small matter they shall decide themselves,

  100. so it will be easier for you,

  101. and they will bear the burden with you.

  102. If you do this,

  103. God will direct you.

  104. You will be able to endure,

  105. and all this people also will go to their place in peace.

  106. So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law,

  107. and did all that he had said.

  108. Moses chose able men out of all Israel,

  109. and made them heads over the people,

  110. chiefs of thousands,

  111. of hundreds,

  112. of fifties,

  113. and of tens,

  114. and they judged the people at all times.

  115. Any hard case they brought to Moses,

  116. but any small matter they decided themselves.

  117. Then Moses let his father-in-law depart,

  118. and he went away to his own country.

  119. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  120. You may be seated.

  121. Are you guys hearing echoes?

  122. Are you guys okay with the sound?

  123. Okay.

  124. This passage serves as a hinge in the book of Exodus in two ways.

  125. First, chapter 18, verses 1 to 12,

  126. summarized the Lord's deliverance of Israel through Moses,

  127. recounted in chapters 2 to 17.

  128. And then chapter 18, verses 13 to 27,

  129. lay the groundwork for the governance

  130. and judgeship of God's people as a nation,

  131. and anticipates chapters 19 to 40,

  132. where God gives specific laws and instructions

  133. for obedience to him and his worship.

  134. And in this way,

  135. chapter 18 serves as a conclusion

  136. to the first half of the book,

  137. and an introduction to the second half of the book.

  138. And we see here another kind of transition in second way.

  139. 17, verse 9,

  140. is the first time in the Bible

  141. that we are introduced to Joshua,

  142. who will eventually succeed Moses

  143. as a leader of Israel

  144. and lead God's people into Canaan.

  145. And in this passage,

  146. both chapter 17 and 18,

  147. we see Moses delegating more of his responsibilities,

  148. thereby laying the groundwork

  149. for his eventual transition from leadership.

  150. So this passage serves as a hinge

  151. to a new phase of life in Israel as God's people.

  152. And one of the main lessons that we learn

  153. from this passage is this,

  154. that God appoints weak people

  155. to carry out his weighty purposes

  156. with the help of others.

  157. And first, we're going to see generals

  158. for times of war,

  159. and then we're going to see judges

  160. for times of peace.

  161. When the Israelites were still at Rephidim,

  162. which is in the region in the wilderness of sin

  163. that they've been at for the past two weeks,

  164. where the Lord provided water

  165. for the Israelites from the rock,

  166. it says in chapter 17, verse 8,

  167. that Amalek came and fought with Israel.

  168. We know from Genesis 36

  169. that Amalek is Esau's grandson.

  170. This is, it's his firstborn son, Eliphaz,

  171. who gave birth to Amalek through a concubine.

  172. And so here we see a distinction

  173. between the chosen line of Jacob

  174. and the line of Esau, the Amalekites.

  175. Since Moses and Aaron were only four generations

  176. removed from Jacob,

  177. it's not inconceivable that the Amalekites

  178. are here actually being led by Amalek himself.

  179. That's why in verse 13,

  180. it refers to Amalek and his people.

  181. So considering that they were distant relatives

  182. of Israel, what they're doing here

  183. is even more egregious.

  184. Deuteronomy 25, verses 17 to 19

    Deuteronomy 25:17–19

  185. provides some more details

  186. about this attack of the Amalekites.

  187. And it says this,

  188. remember what Amalek did to you

  189. on the way as you came out of Egypt,

  190. how he attacked you on the way

  191. when you were faint and weary

  192. and cut off your tail,

  193. those who were lagging behind you.

  194. And he did not fear God.

  195. So this explains why the Lord declares

  196. in verse 14,

  197. I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek

  198. from under heaven.

  199. God is absolutely furious

  200. at what Amalek is doing here.

  201. Because when you're on a march

  202. with hundreds of thousands of people,

  203. millions of people,

  204. who are the people that lag behind

  205. at the back of the line?

  206. Sick people?

  207. Old, infirm people?

  208. Families with children?

  209. Pregnant women?

  210. These are the people

  211. who are lagging behind,

  212. people who are falling in the back.

  213. And what Amalek is doing

  214. is cutting off the tail,

  215. attacking the most vulnerable member

  216. of Israel as a nation

  217. in order to profit themselves.

  218. And so God declares war on the Amalekites

  219. on behalf of the Israelites.

  220. They did not fear God.

  221. They came upon the Israelites

  222. when they were faint, it says,

  223. and weary from their long journey

  224. through the wilderness.

  225. Up to this point,

  226. Israelites have not had to take up the sword.

  227. But here the Amalekites forced their hand

  228. and it says in verse 9,

  229. Moses said to Joshua,

  230. choose for us men

  231. and go out and fight with Amalek.

  232. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill

  233. with the staff of God in my hand.

  234. So we'll see,

  235. this is the first time

  236. we are introduced to Joshua

  237. and we're going to see more and more

  238. his increasing role

  239. as an assistant to Moses

  240. and eventually to take over

  241. the mantle of leadership.

  242. And Moses here determines

  243. that Joshua is the most fitting man

  244. to recruit an army

  245. among the Israelite men

  246. to go out and fight with Amalek.

  247. Maybe, I mean,

  248. he's certainly younger than Moses.

  249. He's fresher, stronger.

  250. He appoints Joshua

  251. to lead the men into battle.

  252. And Moses says,

  253. tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill

  254. with the staff of God in my hand.

  255. So just so you know,

  256. this is not a cowardly attempt

  257. to avoid the perils of war

  258. on the safety of a hill.

  259. He says in verses 11 to 13,

  260. whenever Moses held up his hand,

  261. Israel prevailed.

  262. And whenever he lowered his hand,

  263. Amalek prevailed.

  264. But Moses' hands grew weary,

  265. so they took a stone

  266. and put it under him

  267. and he sat on it

  268. while Aaron and Hur

  269. held up his hands.

  270. One on one side

  271. and the other on the other side.

  272. So his hands were steady

  273. until the going down of the sun.

  274. And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek

  275. and his people with the sword.

  276. Moses' hand is mentioned

  277. six times in verses 9 to 12.

  278. There's a focus on Moses' hand.

  279. And it's not because

  280. Moses' hand itself

  281. has some magical properties

  282. or any special powers,

  283. but it's because in his hand,

  284. as verse 9 says,

  285. is the staff of God.

  286. The authority and power

  287. that God had personally entrusted

  288. to Moses to lead his people.

  289. So whenever Moses raises his hand

  290. holding the staff of God,

  291. the tide of battle

  292. turns in favor of the Israelites,

  293. but whenever he lowers it,

  294. the tide turns the other way

  295. in favor of the Amalekites.

  296. So I don't know if you've ever tried

  297. to hold your hands up

  298. for a long time.

  299. It's really hard to do that

  300. for more than a few minutes.

  301. I know because growing up,

  302. this is how my parents punished me

  303. when I did something wrong.

  304. They said,

  305. kneel over there

  306. and keep your hands up

  307. for several minutes.

  308. If I get into fights with people,

  309. this is what they make me do.

  310. And it's really hard to do.

  311. So eventually it gets very tiring

  312. so you start squirming

  313. and if you're only having

  314. to raise one hand,

  315. you can support it

  316. with the other hand.

  317. And it seems like

  318. that's what Moses is doing.

  319. That's why in verse 11,

  320. it only mentions one hand of Moses.

  321. But then in verse 12,

  322. it says Moses' hands, plural,

  323. grew weary.

  324. And the phrase grew weary

  325. is literally grew heavy.

  326. It's getting too heavy

  327. for him to keep up his arms.

  328. And it's becoming,

  329. it's plural because

  330. he's doing this,

  331. he switches hands

  332. to the other hand,

  333. he's doing this,

  334. or he's doing this

  335. and now he can't keep either one up.

  336. So now he's,

  337. that's why both hands are weary.

  338. This is why they make him,

  339. make him sit down.

  340. You know,

  341. you might wonder why,

  342. you know,

  343. Aaron and Hur

  344. put a stone under him

  345. to have him sit down.

  346. It's not his legs that are tired,

  347. it's his arms.

  348. The reason why

  349. is because if Moses sits down,

  350. his arms are lower,

  351. so Aaron and Hur

  352. don't have to keep their arms up,

  353. they can just hold his arm

  354. against their body.

  355. So they're literally

  356. holding his arms up

  357. on either side

  358. while Moses is sitting

  359. on the stone.

  360. And so what's the point

  361. of all this?

  362. Why are we getting

  363. all these details?

  364. So there are at least

  365. two things that I think

  366. the Lord is teaching us

  367. through this.

  368. First is that Moses,

  369. though he was

  370. the Lord's chosen representative,

  371. he was only human.

  372. He was weak,

  373. he was inadequate,

  374. he needed the help of others,

  375. and in this case,

  376. Aaron, his brother,

  377. and Hur,

  378. a man from the tribe of Judah,

  379. who is the grandfather

  380. of Bezalel,

  381. who is responsible

  382. for designing

  383. and crafting

  384. the tabernacle

  385. and its furnishings

  386. in Exodus 31.

  387. It's not verified

  388. by scripture itself,

  389. but later Jewish tradition

  390. says that Hur

  391. is actually

  392. Miriam's husband,

  393. which would make him

  394. Moses' brother-in-law.

  395. So if that's the case,

  396. he's taking his

  397. literal closest brothers

  398. to hold up his arms

  399. while he's up on the hill,

  400. his brother and his

  401. brother-in-law.

  402. That shows us

  403. that God appoints

  404. weak people

  405. to carry out

  406. his weighty purposes

  407. with help from our

  408. brothers and sisters

  409. in Christ.

  410. Because there will be

  411. times in your own life

  412. when your hands

  413. grow weary

  414. with work that you

  415. are doing for the Lord.

  416. The things that God

  417. has called you to do,

  418. but you will not

  419. be adequate

  420. for the task.

  421. You will not be able

  422. to do it on your own.

  423. And when you grow weary,

  424. it's not cause to despair,

  425. but it's cause to remember

  426. that God designed it

  427. to be that way

  428. because you're not meant

  429. to carry the burden

  430. on your own.

  431. No one is self-sufficient.

  432. Ephesians 4.16 says,

  433. when each part

  434. of the body of Christ,

  435. the local church,

  436. is working properly,

  437. it makes the body grow

  438. so that it builds

  439. itself up in love.

  440. Each part

  441. has a role to play.

  442. 1 Corinthians 12 says,

  443. for the body

  444. does not consist

  445. of one member,

  446. but of many,

  447. and that God

  448. arranged the members

  449. in the body,

  450. each one of them

  451. as he chose.

  452. So that each part

  453. has an indispensable

  454. role to play.

  455. Moses was God's

  456. appointed leader

  457. of Israel.

  458. He was the one

  459. to whom the Lord

  460. had given the authority

  461. to carry the staff

  462. of God.

  463. Aaron and Hur

  464. could not carry

  465. the staff of God

  466. for Moses.

  467. However,

  468. they could help

  469. Moses hold up

  470. his arms.

  471. And that's exactly

  472. what they did.

  473. I feel like I'm

  474. overusing references

  475. from this lately,

  476. but in the Lord

  477. of the Rings,

  478. the return of the king,

  479. where Frodo,

  480. Baggins,

  481. and Samwise Gamgee

  482. enter Mordor,

  483. Mordor,

  484. sorry,

  485. they are approaching

  486. the fire of Mount Doom,

  487. and Frodo is so exhausted

  488. from the journey

  489. that he literally

  490. cannot take another step.

  491. And you guys know

  492. where I'm going.

  493. But he is a chosen

  494. ring bearer.

  495. Frodo is the only one

  496. who can carry the ring

  497. to go destroy it

  498. in the mountains.

  499. So this is what

  500. in that moment

  501. his loyal friend

  502. Samwise Gamgee

  503. says to him,

  504. come Mr. Frodo,

  505. I can't carry it for you,

  506. but I can carry you.

  507. And he literally

  508. picks him up

  509. and starts walking

  510. into Mount Mordor.

  511. And sometimes

  512. that's going to happen

  513. to us.

  514. That's what Aaron and Hur

  515. are literally doing.

  516. I can't carry the staff

  517. for you,

  518. but I can carry your hand.

  519. I can pick your hand up

  520. and keep it up.

  521. Galatians 6, 2 commands us

  522. to bear one another's burdens

  523. and so fulfill

  524. the law of Christ.

  525. When one of us

  526. is caught in any transgression,

  527. we can't repent

  528. for that person.

  529. But we can restore him

  530. in a spirit of gentleness.

  531. We can rebuke him

  532. in love.

  533. When one of us

  534. is grieving a loss,

  535. we can't experience

  536. the loss for her,

  537. but we can comfort her

  538. in her mourning

  539. and point her

  540. to the resurrection hope

  541. that we have in Christ.

  542. When one of us

  543. is afflicted

  544. by severe trials

  545. in a marriage,

  546. and we can't go through

  547. the trial for that person,

  548. but we can help him

  549. or her bear

  550. some of others' burdens,

  551. the other burdens

  552. in that person's life.

  553. We can encourage that person

  554. and pray for that person.

  555. Some of you are

  556. carrying very heavy burdens

  557. this morning.

  558. You can't hold up

  559. your arms anymore.

  560. But don't give up.

  561. Look around you.

  562. See who can be your Aaron.

  563. Who can be your her

  564. and call them

  565. to your aid.

  566. And brothers and sisters,

  567. knowing that there are people

  568. in our midst

  569. who are weary,

  570. whose hands are growing heavy,

  571. look out for such people

  572. around you

  573. so you can come

  574. to their aid

  575. to be their Aaron

  576. and her for them.

  577. The second thing,

  578. and I think this is

  579. the main thing

  580. that this passage teaches us,

  581. is the same lesson

  582. that we have seen

  583. over and over again

  584. throughout the book of Exodus.

  585. And that is this,

  586. the battle belongs

  587. to the Lord.

  588. Lord,

  589. pretend that you are

  590. a film director

  591. for a moment.

  592. You're adapting this passage,

  593. Exodus 17,

  594. short verses

  595. for the big screen.

  596. Where would the focus

  597. of your movie be?

  598. I would venture to guess

  599. that you would probably

  600. not spend the majority

  601. of your movie

  602. showing Moses

  603. struggling to hold

  604. his hand up.

  605. You'd probably spend

  606. most of the time

  607. showing the swords clashing,

  608. chariots clashing,

  609. people running,

  610. blood spilling,

  611. action on the battlefield.

  612. Joshua rallying

  613. his troops into battle.

  614. Because from our

  615. human standpoint,

  616. that's where the action is.

  617. But that's not

  618. where the focus

  619. is in this passage,

  620. in the word of God.

  621. Apart from the summary

  622. statement of verse 13,

  623. which says Joshua

  624. overwhelmed Amalek

  625. and his people

  626. with the sword,

  627. there is zero description

  628. of the battlefield.

  629. The focus is instead

  630. on the hand of Moses

  631. carrying the staff of God.

  632. When it is lifted,

  633. they win.

  634. When it is lowered,

  635. they start losing.

  636. How Moses' hands

  637. grew weary

  638. and how Aaron and her

  639. helped them keep them up.

  640. Why is the focus

  641. so much on Moses' hand?

  642. God's perspective,

  643. because that's

  644. in the spiritual scheme

  645. of things,

  646. from God's perspective,

  647. that is where

  648. the real battle

  649. is taking place.

  650. Because the battle

  651. is not being decided

  652. by the sword of Joshua,

  653. but by the hand

  654. of the Lord.

  655. Surely Joshua

  656. was a valiant young man

  657. as we see throughout

  658. the first six books

  659. of the Bible,

  660. but it's not his competence

  661. or courage

  662. as a military general,

  663. nor the might

  664. of the Israelite army

  665. that brings victory.

  666. They did have a role to play.

  667. They did have to go and fight,

  668. and we likewise

  669. have a role to play.

  670. We do have things

  671. we must do

  672. as God's people,

  673. but the battle

  674. belongs to the Lord.

  675. It's him who decides

  676. the victory.

  677. That's the whole point

  678. of verses 11 and 13.

  679. It says in verses 14 to 16,

  680. then the Lord said to Moses,

  681. write this as a memorial

  682. in a book

  683. and recite it

  684. in the years of Joshua

  685. that I will utterly

  686. blot out the memory

  687. of Amalek

  688. from under heaven.

  689. And Moses built an altar

  690. and called the name of it,

  691. the Lord is my banner,

  692. saying,

  693. a hand upon the throne

  694. of the Lord,

  695. the Lord will have war

  696. with Amalek

  697. from generation to generation.

  698. Since there is a repetition

  699. and an emphasis

  700. on the hand of Moses,

  701. the expression,

  702. a hand upon the throne

  703. of the Lord

  704. is most likely a reference

  705. to Moses' outstretched hand

  706. with the staff

  707. petitioning the Lord

  708. on behalf of Israel.

  709. It's as if Moses'

  710. outstretched hand

  711. is like a hand

  712. on the throne,

  713. on the throne of God,

  714. pleading with him

  715. to fight on Israel's behalf.

  716. And because his hand

  717. was on the Lord's throne,

  718. the Lord says,

  719. I will have war

  720. with Amalek

  721. from generation to generation.

  722. So Moses,

  723. to commemorate this,

  724. builds an altar

  725. and names it,

  726. the Lord is my banner.

  727. The banner,

  728. most likely when we hear

  729. the word banner,

  730. we now think of

  731. advertisement banners.

  732. That's not what's

  733. in view here.

  734. It's referring to the signal,

  735. the military signal,

  736. or the military standard,

  737. the flag,

  738. the banner under

  739. which an army fights.

  740. If the Lord is the banner,

  741. that means this is

  742. the Lord's battle.

  743. He's the king

  744. who is depicted on the flag.

  745. As Christians,

  746. we will face battles

  747. in this life.

  748. Jesus says in John 15 to 20,

  749. 15 verse 20,

  750. if they persecuted me,

  751. they will persecute you also.

  752. When you try to obey God

  753. and follow his word,

  754. you will face opposition

  755. from the world

  756. and from your sinful flesh

  757. and from the devil.

  758. We should not be surprised

  759. by that.

  760. 1 Peter 5, 8 says

  761. that our adversary,

  762. the devil,

  763. prowls around

  764. like a roaring lion

  765. seeking someone to devour.

  766. He will come upon us

  767. when we are faint and weary

  768. like the Israelites were.

  769. He will try to cut off our tail

  770. and attack the weakest

  771. and most vulnerable members

  772. among us.

  773. there will be sweat

  774. and tears

  775. and sometimes even blood.

  776. There's a reason why

  777. Ephesians 6 tells us

  778. to put on the full armor of God.

  779. You don't need an armor

  780. if you're not in war.

  781. You might not want to fight,

  782. but our enemies

  783. will bring the fight to you.

  784. But in the midst

  785. of these battles,

  786. we must remember

  787. that the Lord is my banner.

  788. The battle ultimately

  789. belongs to the Lord.

  790. So let me ask you,

  791. are you fighting your battles

  792. in the Christian life

  793. in your own strength

  794. or in the strength

  795. of the Lord?

  796. Here's how you know.

  797. Here's a good

  798. diagnostic test

  799. to gauge

  800. what's happening

  801. in your life.

  802. Where are your hands?

  803. Are your hands

  804. always busy

  805. with ministry?

  806. Are your hands

  807. always serving?

  808. Or are your hands

  809. upon the throne

  810. of the Lord?

  811. Are your hands

  812. stretched out

  813. toward God

  814. in prayer?

  815. If you're not

  816. clinging

  817. to God's throne

  818. in prayer,

  819. then you're operating

  820. under the assumption

  821. that your activity

  822. and not God's activity

  823. is decisive

  824. in your life.

  825. But the battle

  826. does not ultimately

  827. belong to us.

  828. It belongs

  829. to the Lord.

  830. So let's not forget,

  831. let's not be a church

  832. that forgets

  833. where the banner is,

  834. under whose banner

  835. we fight.

  836. Because as soon as

  837. we become

  838. a prayerless church,

  839. we will be

  840. a powerless church.

  841. After defeating

  842. the Amalekites,

  843. the Israelites

  844. have some respite.

  845. And it's during

  846. that time,

  847. Jethro,

  848. the priest of Midian,

  849. Moses' father-in-law

  850. comes to visit Moses

  851. and see how he's doing.

  852. In Exodus 4,

  853. we were told

  854. that Moses actually

  855. took his wife

  856. and children

  857. with him to Egypt.

  858. So it seems,

  859. according to chapter 18,

  860. at some point

  861. later in time,

  862. he sent his wife

  863. and children

  864. back to Egypt,

  865. which would be

  866. a very understandable

  867. thing to do.

  868. It's probably

  869. what I would do

  870. in his shoes

  871. because Pharaoh's

  872. refusing to let

  873. the Israelites go.

  874. Tensions are rising.

  875. Plagues are falling.

  876. There's conflict going on.

  877. So it's maybe

  878. a sensible time

  879. to send your children

  880. and your wife

  881. back home

  882. since they have

  883. a place to go to

  884. in Midian.

  885. And it recalls

  886. a couple things,

  887. the names of his sons.

  888. And this is significant

  889. because in this

  890. family reunion,

  891. we see a summary

  892. of Moses' biography.

  893. Verses 3-4,

  894. chapter 18,

  895. tells us that

  896. the name of the one

  897. son was Gershom,

  898. for he said,

  899. I have been a sojourner

  900. in a foreign land

  901. and the name

  902. of the other,

  903. Eliezer,

  904. for he said,

  905. the God of my father

  906. was my help

  907. and delivered me

  908. from the sword

  909. of Pharaoh.

  910. So Gershom was

  911. the son Moses

  912. had with Zipporah

  913. when he entered

  914. the land of Midian.

  915. He was saying

  916. that he is now

  917. a sojourner

  918. in the foreign land

  919. of Midian.

  920. And then Eliezer

  921. is the son he had

  922. just before

  923. re-entering Egypt

  924. and he named him

  925. Eliezer

  926. because God

  927. had just told him

  928. that the men,

  929. including Pharaoh,

  930. who were seeking

  931. your life in Egypt

  932. are now dead.

  933. And so Moses

  934. praised God

  935. saying that God

  936. has delivered me

  937. from the sword

  938. of Pharaoh.

  939. He was my helper

  940. and so God,

  941. he named him

  942. Eliezer.

  943. And this is

  944. a sketch

  945. of Moses' life,

  946. how God

  947. has been faithful

  948. to him.

  949. But in this passage,

  950. it also serves

  951. to exemplify,

  952. to capture

  953. what God has done

  954. for the Israelites.

  955. Because Gershom,

  956. I have been

  957. a sojourner

  958. in a foreign land.

  959. Israelites were also

  960. sojourners

  961. in the foreign land

  962. of Egypt.

  963. And Eliezer,

  964. God is my help,

  965. he has delivered me

  966. from the sword

  967. of Pharaoh.

  968. The Israelites

  969. have also been

  970. delivered by God

  971. from the sword

  972. of Pharaoh.

  973. God has been

  974. their help.

  975. So in this,

  976. we see God's

  977. utter faithfulness.

  978. Moses sees

  979. his son,

  980. Gershom,

  981. Eliezer,

  982. and he sees

  983. how faithful

  984. God has been.

  985. And so Moses

  986. greets his father-in-law

  987. warmly,

  988. and they spend

  989. the while

  990. catching up

  991. in Moses' tent.

  992. And it says

  993. in verse 8,

  994. that Moses told

  995. his father-in-law

  996. all that the Lord

  997. had done

  998. to Pharaoh

  999. and to the Egyptians

  1000. for Israel's sake,

  1001. all the hardship

  1002. that had come upon

  1003. them in the way,

  1004. and how the Lord

  1005. had delivered them.

  1006. So Moses

  1007. tells Jethro

  1008. of all the amazing

  1009. signs that God

  1010. did in Egypt

  1011. that he witnessed,

  1012. how the Lord

  1013. defeated Egypt

  1014. and Pharaoh

  1015. by his mighty hand.

  1016. But that's not

  1017. all he tells.

  1018. He also tells

  1019. of their hardships

  1020. and their struggles.

  1021. He tells his father-in-law,

  1022. pours out his heart

  1023. about all the hardship

  1024. that they faced

  1025. in the wilderness.

  1026. If you think

1027. about the last few passages,

  1028. it hasn't been

  1029. an easy journey

  1030. for Moses.

  1031. People grumbled

  1032. against him

  1033. at the bitters

  1034. of waters of Marah.

  1035. They grumbled

  1036. against him

  1037. for lack of food

  1038. in the wilderness

  1039. of sin.

  1040. And then they quarreled

  1041. with him

  1042. at Massah

  1043. and Meribah

  1044. and almost

  1045. stoned him

  1046. to death.

  1047. So Moses

  1048. is kind of

  1049. sharing his griefs

  1050. with his father-in-law.

  1051. Can you believe

  1052. what these guys

  1053. are trying to do

  1054. to me?

  1055. But the Lord

  1056. has delivered

  1057. them.

  1058. Think about this

  1059. for a moment.

  1060. From a human standpoint,

  1061. this is a fantastic

  1062. opportunity

  1063. for Moses

  1064. to impress

  1065. his father-in-law.

  1066. Look at what

  1067. I've done!

  1068. Look at what

  1069. I've done!

  1070. I just went

  1071. into one of the

  1072. most powerful

  1073. ancient kingdoms

  1074. in the world

  1075. and delivered

  1076. millions of people

  1077. out of their slavery

  1078. and brought them

  1079. through the wilderness

  1080. and here they are!

  1081. You thought

  1082. your daughter

  1083. married a no-name

  1084. fugitive from Egypt

  1085. but here I am,

  1086. the great Moses.

  1087. It's a great opportunity

1088. for him to do that

  1089. but Moses

  1090. doesn't do that.

  1091. He emphasizes

  1092. the role

  1093. of the Lord

  1094. in all of it.

  1095. He speaks of all

  1096. that the Lord

  1097. had done

  1098. to Pharaoh

  1099. and to Egyptians

  1100. and he speaks of

  1101. how the Lord

  1102. had delivered

  1103. Israel.

  1104. It's about

  1105. what the Lord

  1106. has done

  1107. and not what

  1108. Moses has done.

  1109. Likewise,

  1110. when we

  1111. recount

  1112. the triumphs

  1113. and victories

  1114. of our lives,

  1115. we should give

  1116. credit

  1117. where the credit

  1118. is due

  1119. and glorify

  1120. God.

  1121. We can take

  1122. credit

  1123. in quite subtle

  1124. ways.

  1125. There's a difference

  1126. between saying,

  1127. look at the amazing

  1128. things that God

  1129. has done

  1130. in my life.

  1131. There's a difference

  1132. between saying that

  1133. and saying,

  1134. look at the amazing

  1135. things that God

  1136. has done

  1137. in my life.

  1138. Do you see

  1139. the difference?

  1140. What God

  1141. has done

  1142. in my life

  1143. makes me

  1144. amazing,

  1145. makes me

  1146. so mature,

  1147. makes me

  1148. so put together,

  1149. makes me

  1150. so experienced.

  1151. If the effect

  1152. of your testimony

  1153. is the elevation

  1154. of your standing

  1155. before people

  1156. rather than

  1157. elevation of

  1158. God's standing

  1159. before their eyes,

  1160. then your emphasis

  1161. in your testimony

  1162. is in the wrong

  1163. place.

  1164. Because Moses

  1165. puts the emphasis

  1166. in the right

  1167. place,

  1168. Jethro's response

  1169. in verses 9 to 11

  1170. is appropriate.

  1171. It says,

  1172. Jethro rejoiced

  1173. for all the good

  1174. that the Lord

  1175. had done

  1176. to Israel

  1177. in that he

  1178. had delivered

  1179. them out of the

  1180. hand of the Egyptians.

  1181. Jethro said,

  1182. blessed be the Lord

  1183. who has delivered

  1184. you out of the

  1185. hand of the

  1186. Egyptians

  1187. and out of the

  1188. hand of Pharaoh

  1189. and has delivered

  1190. the people

  1191. from under the

  1192. hand of the

  1193. Egyptians.

  1194. Now I know

  1195. that the Lord

  1196. is greater

  1197. than all gods

  1198. because in this

  1199. affair they dealt

  1200. arrogantly with

  1201. the people.

  1202. Jethro's response

  1203. is not,

  1204. wow,

  1205. I am so lucky

  1206. to have such

  1207. an impressive,

  1208. successful man

  1209. as my son-in-law.

  1210. No,

  1211. his response

  1212. is,

  1213. wow,

  1214. the God

  1215. you serve

  1216. is greater

  1217. than all

  1218. the gods.

  1219. That's,

  1220. that should be

  1221. the desire,

  1222. the heartbeat

  1223. of every Christian.

  1224. For people

  1225. to look at us

  1226. and say,

  1227. wow,

  1228. look at,

  1229. not look at how

  1230. impressive those

  1231. Christians are,

  1232. but for them

  1233. to look at us

  1234. and say,

  1235. look at how

  1236. amazing

  1237. their God

  1238. is.

  1239. And Jethro

  1240. comes to

  1241. correct conclusion

  1242. that the Lord

  1243. is greater

  1244. than all the gods.

  1245. Because the

  1246. ancient world

  1247. was so thoroughly

  1248. religious

  1249. and because

  1250. God's people

  1251. were keenly

  1252. aware of

  1253. spiritual realities

  1254. and that there

  1255. were spiritual

  1256. forces,

  1257. demonic spirits

  1258. at work

  1259. among the

  1260. pagan deities

  1261. and the

  1262. pagan nations,

  1263. they sometimes

  1264. expressed their

  1265. monotheistic faith,

  1266. the belief that

  1267. there is only

  1268. one true God

  1269. in henotheistic

  1270. terms,

  1271. terms that

  1272. acknowledge that

  1273. there are other

  1274. gods.

  1275. But this is not

  1276. a denial of

  1277. their monotheism.

  1278. There is only

  1279. one true God,

  1280. but because all

  1281. these nations

  1282. believe in other

  1283. gods and because

  1284. there are evil

  1285. spirits at work,

  1286. they say things

  1287. like,

  1288. the Lord is

  1289. greater than

  1290. all gods.

  1291. There is no

  1292. God like

  1293. our God.

  1294. God.

  1295. Jeremiah 2.11

  1296. makes this clear

  1297. when God,

  1298. they're there in

  1299. that context,

  1300. God's bemoaning

  1301. the fact that

  1302. the Israelites

  1303. have exchanged

  1304. God,

  1305. the true God,

  1306. for idols.

  1307. And this is what

  1308. God says in

  1309. Jeremiah 2.11,

  1310. has a nation

  1311. changed its

  1312. gods?

  1313. So are there

  1314. actually gods?

  1315. It says,

  1316. has a nation

  1317. changed its

  1318. gods,

  1319. even though

  1320. they are

  1321. no gods?

  1322. But my people

  1323. have changed

  1324. their glory for

  1325. that which does

  1326. not profit.

  1327. Every other

  1328. nation has

  1329. not changed

  1330. its gods,

  1331. even though

  1332. their so-called

  1333. gods are

  1334. actually not

  1335. gods at all.

  1336. But it speaks

  1337. like they are

  1338. gods.

  1339. God's people

  1340. had exchanged

  1341. the true God

  1342. for idols.

  1343. In light of

  1344. this,

  1345. Jethro's

  1346. profession that

  1347. the Lord is

  1348. greater than

  1349. all gods

  1350. is remarkable.

  1351. Remember from

  1352. verse 1 that

  1353. Jethro is the

  1354. Midianite priest.

  1355. He is the

  1356. priest at

  1357. Midian.

  1358. He's not only

  1359. a non-Israelite,

  1360. a foreigner,

  1361. a Gentile,

  1362. he's the

  1363. priest of

  1364. Midianite religion,

  1365. worshiper of a

  1366. different false

  1367. deity.

  1368. And yet after

  1369. hearing of all

  1370. that Yahweh has

  1371. done on behalf

  1372. of the Israelites,

  1373. he concludes,

  1374. I know that the

  1375. Lord is greater

  1376. than all gods.

  1377. Knowing God,

  1378. knowing the

  1379. Lord is a

  1380. major theme in

  1381. the book of

  1382. Exodus as we

  1383. have seen over

  1384. and over again.

  1385. Pharaoh claimed,

  1386. I do not know

  1387. the Lord.

  1388. And every time

  1389. God reveals

  1390. himself through

  1391. signs in

  1392. Egypt,

  1393. his purpose is

  1394. so that the

  1395. Egyptians and

  1396. the Israelites

  1397. might know

  1398. him,

  1399. know that he

  1400. is Yahweh,

  1401. he is the

  1402. Lord.

  1403. The purpose

  1404. of the

  1405. Exodus is

  1406. revelation,

  1407. to reveal

  1408. God.

  1409. But sadly,

  1410. we saw in the

  1411. preceding episodes

  1412. the last two

  1413. weeks that the

  1414. Israelites,

  1415. even after all

  1416. that they had

  1417. been delivered

  1418. from,

  1419. did not rightly

  1420. know God as

  1421. they ought to.

  1422. But here is a

  1423. Gentile pagan

  1424. worshiper,

  1425. the priest of

  1426. Midian professing,

  1427. I know that the

  1428. Lord is greater

  1429. than all gods.

  1430. This is a humble

  1431. admission that

  1432. Yahweh is greater

  1433. even than the

  1434. God of the

  1435. Midianite religion

  1436. that he is

  1437. priest of.

  1438. In fact,

1439. it may even be a

  1440. profession of faith

  1441. that Yahweh is

  1442. the only true

  1443. God.

  1444. We can see the

  1445. possibility of that

  1446. in verse 12.

  1447. Where it says,

  1448. Jethro,

  1449. Moses' father-in-law,

  1450. brought a burnt

  1451. offering and

  1452. sacrifices to

  1453. God.

  1454. And Aaron came

  1455. with all the

  1456. elders of Israel

  1457. to eat bread

  1458. with Moses'

  1459. father-in-law

  1460. before God.

  1461. This is a

  1462. preview of the

  1463. sacrificial system

  1464. that will later

  1465. be instituted

  1466. and resembles a

  1467. fellowship offering

  1468. that is stipulated

  1469. in Exodus 20

  1470. and Leviticus 7

  1471. where they make

  1472. a burnt offering

  1473. to God

  1474. and then God's

  1475. people share in

  1476. that meal together

  1477. to indicate their

  1478. fellowship with one

  1479. another and with

  1480. God.

  1481. So,

  1482. after being,

  1483. having been

  1484. introduced in

  1485. verse 1 as

  1486. the priest of

  1487. Midian,

  1488. Jethro is never

  1489. again called

  1490. the priest of

  1491. Midian again

  1492. in scripture.

  1493. But he is called

  1494. repeatedly again

  1495. and again,

  1496. 13 times to be

  1497. exact in this

  1498. passage,

  1499. Moses'

  1500. father-in-law,

  1501. showing that he is

  1502. a member of

  1503. Moses' family

  1504. included in the

  1505. fellowship of

  1506. God's people

  1507. and it's his

  1508. relation to

  1509. Moses and

  1510. his profession

  1511. of faith

  1512. in the Lord

  1513. that gives

  1514. Jethro standing

  1515. among God's

  1516. people,

  1517. not the fact

  1518. that he is

  1519. a priest of

  1520. Midian.

  1521. And Jethro is

  1522. not afraid to

  1523. use his

  1524. standing as

  1525. Moses'

  1526. father-in-law

  1527. to give him

  1528. some fatherly

  1529. counsel in

  1530. verses 13 to

  1531. 27.

  1532. He notices in

  1533. verse 13

  1534. that Moses

  1535. sat to judge

  1536. the people

  1537. and the people

  1538. stood around

  1539. Moses from

  1540. morning till

  1541. evening.

  1542. So we

  1543. learn here

  1544. from verse

  1545. 15 to 16

  1546. that Moses

  1547. hears an

  1548. individual

  1549. case and

  1550. takes each

  1551. individual

  1552. case to

  1553. the Lord

  1554. in order to

  1555. hear from

  1556. him and

  1557. to be able

  1558. to make

  1559. a judgment,

  1560. a decision.

  1561. And he's

  1562. the one that

  1563. in those

  1564. cases individually

  1565. teaching people

  1566. that come to

  1567. him the

  1568. statutes of

  1569. God and

  1570. his laws.

  1571. Jethro sees

  1572. immediately that

  1573. this is not

  1574. only a

  1575. painstakingly

  1576. slow process,

  1577. which is why

  1578. people are

  1579. standing around

  1580. just waiting

  1581. in line all

  1582. day.

  1583. It's testing

  1584. people's

  1585. patience.

  1586. But also

  1587. Jethro sees

  1588. that his

  1589. son-in-law

  1590. is headed

  1591. toward inevitable

  1592. burnout.

  1593. So he says

  1594. to Moses

  1595. in verses

  1596. 17 to 23,

  1597. what you are

  1598. doing is not

  1599. good.

  1600. You and the

  1601. people with

  1602. you will

  1603. certainly wear

  1604. yourselves out

  1605. for the thing

  1606. is too heavy

  1607. for you.

  1608. You're not

  1609. able to do

  1610. it alone.

  1611. Now obey

  1612. my voice,

  1613. I will give

  1614. you advice,

  1615. and God

  1616. be with you.

  1617. You shall

  1618. represent the

  1619. people before

  1620. God and

  1621. bring their

  1622. cases to

  1623. God,

  1624. and you

  1625. shall warn

  1626. them about

  1627. the statutes

  1628. and the laws

  1629. and make

  1630. them know

  1631. the way

  1632. in which

  1633. they must

  1634. walk and

  1635. what they

  1636. must do.

  1637. Moreover,

  1638. look for

  1639. able men

  1640. from all

  1641. the people,

  1642. men who

  1643. fear God,

  1644. who are

  1645. trustworthy

  1646. and hate

  1647. a bribe,

  1648. and place

  1649. such men

  1650. over the

  1651. people as

  1652. chiefs of

  1653. thousands,

  1654. of hundreds,

  1655. of fifties,

  1656. and of tens,

  1657. and let them

  1658. judge the

  1659. people at

  1660. all times.

  1661. Every great

  1662. matter they

  1663. shall bring

  1664. to you,

  1665. but any

  1666. small matter

  1667. they shall

  1668. decide

  1669. themselves.

  1670. If you do

  1671. this,

  1672. God will

  1673. direct you,

  1674. you will

  1675. be able to

  1676. endure,

  1677. and all

  1678. these people

  1679. will also

  1680. go to their

  1681. place in

  1682. peace.

  1683. Jethro's

  1684. recommendation

  1685. is what in

  1686. modern days

  1687. people call

  1688. the principle

  1689. of subsidiarity.

  1690. The Oxford

  1691. English

  1692. Dictionary

  1693. defines

  1694. subsidiarity

  1695. as,

  1696. quote,

  1697. the principle

  1698. that a

  1699. central authority

  1700. should have

  1701. a subsidiary

  1702. function,

  1703. performing

  1704. only those

  1705. tasks which

  1706. cannot be

  1707. performed at

  1708. a more

  1709. local level.

  1710. So this

  1711. principle was

  1712. expounded

  1713. upon by

  1714. 13th century

  1715. theologian,

  1716. Italian theologian

  1717. Thomas Aquinas,

  1718. as well as

  1719. by 16th century

  1720. German lawyer

  1721. and Calvinist

  1722. political philosopher

  1723. Johannes

  1724. Althaus,

  1725. but the

  1726. principle is

  1727. way more

  1728. ancient than

  1729. that.

  1730. It goes

  1731. all the way

  1732. back to

  1733. Moses.

  1734. This

  1735. principle is

  1736. codified in

  1737. the laws of

  1738. the United

  1739. States.

  1740. The

  1741. Tenth

  1742. Amendment

  1743. states,

  1744. quote,

  1745. the powers

  1746. not delegated

  1747. to the

  1748. United

  1749. States by

  1750. the

  1751. Constitution

  1752. nor

  1753. prohibited

  1754. by it

  1755. to the

  1756. states

  1757. are

  1758. reserved

  1759. to the

  1760. states

  1761. respectively

  1762. or to

  1763. the

  1764. people.

  1765. Subsidiarity.

  1766. Our

  1767. federal

  1768. justice

  1769. system also

  1770. reflects this

  1771. principle

  1772. with 94

  1773. district

  1774. courts

  1775. spread

  1776. throughout

  1777. the

  1778. country

  1779. serving

  1780. as

  1781. the

  1782. primary

  1783. trial

  1784. courts.

  1785. And

  1786. then

  1787. when

  1788. issues

  1789. cannot

  1790. be

  1791. resolved

  1792. there

  1793. people

  1794. make

  1795. appeals

  1796. which

  1797. then

  1798. goes to

  1799. the

  1800. 13

  1801. courts

  1802. of

  1803. appeals

  1804. and

  1805. then

  1806. if

  1807. the

  1808. issues

  1809. still

  1810. remain

  1811. unresolved

  1812. then

  1813. it

  1814. goes

  1815. to

  1816. the

  1817. one

  1818. U.S.

  1819. Supreme

  1820. Court

  1821. for

  1822. final

  1823. review

  1824. and

  1825. judgment.

  1826. This

  1827. is the

  1828. principle

  1829. of

  1830. subsidiarity.

  1831. It's

  1832. a

  1833. wise

  1834. and

  1835. biblical

  1836. principle.

  1837. And

  1838. note

  1839. that

  1840. this is

  1841. not merely

  1842. Jethro's

  1843. good idea

  1844. it's

  1845. actually

  1846. ultimately

  1847. God

  1848. who is

  1849. directing

  1850. Moses

  1851. and the

  1852. Israelites

  1853. this way.

  1854. That's

  1855. why it

  1856. says in

  1857. verse 23

  1858. if you

  1859. do this

  1860. God

  1861. will

  1862. direct

  1863. you.

  1864. The

  1865. NIV

  1866. translates

  1867. it

  1868. this

  1869. way

  1870. if you

  1871. do

  1872. this

  1873. and

  1874. God

  1875. so

  1876. commands

  1877. Moses

  1878. follows

  1879. his

  1880. father-in-law's

  1881. advice

  1882. because

  1883. he

  1884. believes

  1885. that

  1886. this

  1887. is

  1888. in

  1889. fact

  1890. what

  1891. God

  1892. is

  1893. commanding.

  1894. Once

  1895. again

  1896. we

  1897. see

  1898. that

  1899. God

  1900. appoints

  1901. weak

  1902. people

  1903. to

  1904. carry

  1905. out

  1906. his

  1907. weighty

  1908. purposes

  1909. with

  1910. help

  1911. from

  1912. others.

  1913. God

  1914. makes

  1915. babies

  1916. to be

  1917. born

  1918. within

  1919. families.

  1920. We're

  1921. celebrating

  1922. the

  1923. Miller's

  1924. new

  1925. baby

  1926. this

  1927. weekend.

  1928. They're

  1929. all

  1930. born

  1931. into

  1932. families.

  1933. Yeah.

  1934. And

  1935. he

  1936. makes

  1937. families

  1938. function

  1939. within

  1940. larger

  1941. societies.

  1942. Similarly

  1943. God

  1947. within

  1948. the

  1950. of

  1951. God

  1952. when

  1953. they

  1954. are

  1955. born

  1959. and

  1960. faith

  1961. in

  1962. Jesus.

  1966. because

  1967. we

  1968. need

  1969. each

  1970. other

  1971. because

  1972. we

  1973. cannot

  1974. function

  1975. alone

  1976. God

  1977. places

  1978. us

  1979. in

  1980. local

  1981. church

  1982. families.

  1983. The

  1984. lead

  1985. pastor

  1986. of

  1987. a

  1988. local

  1989. church

  1990. does

  1991. not

  1992. make

  1993. all

  1994. the

  1995. decisions

  1996. by

  1997. himself.

  1998. In

  1999. our

  2000. church

  2001. we

  2002. have

  2003. a

  2004. plurality

  2005. of

  2006. elders

  2007. so

  2008. that

  2009. there

  2010. is

  2011. accountability

  2012. and

  2013. counsel

  2014. from

  2015. other

  2016. wise

  2017. elders.

  2018. We

  2019. also

  2020. have

  2021. deacons

  2022. who

  2023. attend

  2024. to

  2025. the

  2026. physical

  2027. temporal

  2028. needs

  2029. of

  2030. the

  2031. church

  2032. members

  2033. in

  2034. our

  2035. church

  2036. things

  2037. like

  2038. food

  2039. and

  2040. water

  2041. housing

  2042. health

  2043. care

  2044. etc.

  2045. Lauren's

  2046. one of

  2047. our

  2048. deacons

  2049. but

  2050. she's

  2051. on

  2052. maternity

  2053. leave

  2054. so

  2055. don't

  2056. go to

  2057. her

  2058. if

  2059. you

  2060. have

  2061. those

  2062. issues

  2063. for

  2064. a

  2065. little

  2066. bit.

  2067. You

  2068. can

  2069. go to

  2070. John

  2071. so

  2072. he's

  2073. kind

  2074. of

  2075. on

  2076. paternity

  2077. leave

  2078. but

  2079. we're

  2080. kind

  2081. of

  2082. bringing

  2083. him

  2084. back.

  2085. In

  2086. a

  2087. much

  2088. smaller

  2089. scale

  2090. Israel

  2091. is

  2092. millions

  2093. of

  2094. people

  2095. by

  2096. this

  2097. point

  2098. the

  2099. principle

  2100. of

  2101. subsidiarity

  2102. functions

  2103. even

  2104. in

  2105. our

  2106. church.

  2107. Decisions

  2108. that

  2109. don't

  2110. require

  2111. pastoral

  2112. oversight

  2113. are

  2114. made

  2115. by

  2116. other

  2117. leaders

  2118. in

  2119. the

  2120. church.

  2121. Note

  2122. that

  2123. subsidiarity

  2124. doesn't

  2125. flatten

  2126. out

  2127. the

  2128. leadership

  2129. structure

  2130. altogether.

  2131. Moses

  2132. does

  2133. not

  2134. abdicate

  2135. his

  2136. leadership

  2137. responsibility

  2138. but

  2139. he

  2140. still

  2141. has

  2142. to

  2143. lead

  2144. the

  2145. people

  2146. of

  2147. God

  2148. but

  2149. he

  2150. does

  2151. not

  2152. bear

  2153. the

  2154. burden

  2155. of

  2156. leadership

  2157. alone.

  2158. The

  2159. criteria

  2160. for the

  2161. officers

  2162. of

  2163. the

  2164. church

  2165. the

  2166. elders

  2167. and

  2168. deacons

  2169. are

  2170. primarily

  2171. matters

  2172. of

  2173. character

  2174. not

  2175. competence

  2176. apart

  2177. from

  2178. the

  2179. fact

  2180. that

  2181. elders

  2182. need

  2183. to

  2184. be

  2185. able

  2186. to

  2187. teach

  2188. all

  2189. the

  2190. requirements

  2191. in

  2192. 1 Timothy

  2193. 3

  2194. are

  2195. character

  2196. requirements.

  2197. Same

  2198. is

  2199. true

  2200. here

  2201. in

  2202. Exodus

  2203. 18

  2204. 21.

  2205. What

  2206. does

  2207. Jethro

  2208. say?

  2209. Look

  2210. for

  2211. able

  2212. men

  2213. from

  2214. all

  2215. the

  2216. people

  2217. men

  2218. who

  2219. fear

  2220. God

  2221. who

  2222. are

  2223. trustworthy

  2224. and

  2225. hate

  2226. a

  2227. bribe.

  2228. The

  2229. word

  2230. able

  2231. sounds

  2232. like

  2233. it's

  2234. speaking

  2235. of

  2236. jurisprudential

  2237. expertise

  2238. but it's

  2239. not

  2240. speaking

  2241. of

  2242. that

  2243. it's

  2244. actually

  2245. translating

  2246. the

  2247. same

  2248. Hebrew

  2249. word

  2250. that

  2251. is

  2252. translated

  2253. in

  2254. Proverbs

  2255. 31

  2256. to

  2257. describe

  2258. the

  2259. excellent

  2260. wife

  2261. the

  2262. wife

  2263. of

  2264. noble

  2265. character.

  2266. It's

  2267. the

  2268. same

  2269. word

  2270. that

  2271. is

  2272. used

  2273. to

  2274. describe

  2275. Boaz

  2276. in

  2277. Ruth

  2278. as

  2279. a

  2280. worthy

  2281. man

  2282. and

  2283. Ruth

  2284. as

  2285. a

  2286. worthy

  2287. woman.

  2288. The

  2289. following

  2290. phrases

  2291. unpack

  2292. what it

  2293. means

  2294. for

  2295. them

  2296. to

  2297. be

  2298. able

  2299. men.

  2300. They

  2301. are

  2302. men

  2303. who

  2304. fear

  2305. God

  2306. who

  2307. are

  2308. trustworthy

  2309. and

  2310. hate

  2311. a

  2312. bribe.

  2313. To

  2314. fear

  2315. God

  2316. is

  2317. to

  2318. live

  2319. ever

  2320. before

  2321. the

  2322. presence

  2323. of

  2324. God

  2325. under

  2326. the

  2327. authority

  2328. of

  2329. God

  2330. for

  2331. the

  2332. glory

  2333. of

  2334. God.

  2335. Such

  2336. men

  2337. are

  2338. trustworthy

  2339. even

  2340. when

  2341. no

  2342. one

  2343. is

  2344. watching

  2345. because

  2346. they

  2347. know

  2348. that

  2349. God

  2350. is

  2351. watching.

  2352. And

  2353. such

  2354. men

  2355. hate

  2356. a

  2357. bribe

  2358. because

  2359. they

  2360. know

  2361. that

  2362. bribe

  2363. subverts

  2364. justice

  2365. and

  2366. because

  2367. they

  2368. know

  2369. that

  2370. they

  2371. will

  2372. have

  2373. to

  2374. give

  2375. an

  2376. account

  2377. to

  2378. God

  2379. even

  2380. if

  2381. they

  2382. can

  2383. get

  2384. away

  2385. with

  2386. taking

  2387. a

  2388. bribe

  2389. among

  2390. men.

  2391. If

  2392. we

  2393. gave

  2394. more

  2395. weight

  2396. to a

  2397. person's

  2398. character

  2399. than

  2400. to a

  2401. person's

  2402. wealth

  2403. celebrity

  2404. verbal

  2405. pugilism

  2406. genealogy

  2407. or

  2408. academic

  2409. pedigree

  2410. when

  2411. electing

  2412. public

  2413. officials

  2414. I

  2415. think

  2416. our

  2417. country

  2418. would

  2419. be

  2420. much

  2421. better

  2422. off.

  2423. This

  2424. passage

  2425. is also

  2426. a

  2427. helpful

  2428. reminder

  2429. of the

  2430. importance

  2431. of

  2432. humility

  2433. and

  2434. leadership.

  2435. It

  2436. might

  2437. not

  2438. have

  2439. been

  2440. easy

  2441. for

  2442. Moses

  2443. to

  2444. listen

  2445. to

  2446. Jethro's

  2447. advice.

  2448. Many

  2449. of you

  2450. have

  2451. heard

  2452. the

  2453. dreaded

  2454. unsolicited

  2455. advice

  2456. from your

  2457. in-laws

  2458. in the

  2459. past.

  2460. Some

  2461. of you

  2462. have

  2463. wonderful

  2464. in-laws

  2465. and you

  2466. desire

  2467. their

  2468. advice

  2469. some

  2470. of you

  2471. don't.

  2472. And

  2473. remember

  2474. also

  2475. that

  2476. Moses

  2477. is

  2478. the

  2479. one

  2480. that

  2481. holds

  2482. the

  2483. staff

  2484. of

  2485. God

  2486. in

  2487. his

  2488. hand.

  2489. He

  2490. just

  2491. defeated

  2492. Egypt.

  2493. He's

  2494. a big

  2495. shot

  2496. if

  2497. there

  2498. ever

  2499. was

  2500. one.

  2501. And

  2502. Jethro

  2503. is

  2504. his

  2505. lowly

  2506. elderly

  2507. father-in-law.

  2508. A

  2509. recent

  2510. convert

  2511. if

  2512. anything.

  2513. A

  2514. priest

  2515. of

  2516. Midian.

  2517. What

  2518. does

  2519. he

  2520. know?

  2521. I

  2522. talked

  2523. to

  2524. God.

  2525. Who

  2526. are

  2527. you?

  2528. No,

  2529. that's

  2530. not

  2531. Moses'

  2532. response.

  2533. Moses is

  2534. humble

  2535. enough

  2536. to

  2537. know

  2538. that

  2539. he

  2540. does

  2541. not

  2542. have

  2543. a

  2544. monopoly

  2545. on

  2546. godly

  2547. wisdom.

  2548. He's

  2549. humble

  2550. enough

  2551. to

  2552. recognize

  2553. that

  2554. his

  2555. outward

  2556. successes

  2557. had

  2558. nothing

  2559. to do

  2560. with

  2561. him

  2562. and

  2563. everything

  2564. to

  2565. do

  2566. with

  2567. God.

  2568. He's

  2569. humble

  2570. enough

  2571. to

  2572. know

  2573. that

  2574. even

  2575. his

  2576. newly

  2577. converted

  2578. Midianite

  2579. father-in-law

  2580. can give

  2581. him

  2582. good

  2583. godly

  2584. advice.

  2585. This

  2586. is

  2587. something

  2588. that

  2589. we

  2590. all

  2591. have

  2592. to

  2593. remember

  2594. especially

  2595. those

  2596. of

  2597. us

  2598. in

  2599. leadership

  2600. positions

  2601. in

  2602. the

  2603. church.

  2604. I

  2605. don't

  2606. know

  2607. if

  2608. you

  2609. noticed

  2610. but

  2611. there

  2612. are

  2613. actually

  2614. many

  2615. parallels

  2616. between

  2617. the

  2618. passage

  2619. about

  2620. Amalek's

  2621. attack

  2622. of

  2623. Israel

  2624. and

  2625. Jethro's

  2626. greeting

  2627. of

  2628. Israel.

  2629. There's

  2630. an

  2631. intentional

  2632. contrast

  2633. being set

  2634. up

  2635. between

  2636. the

  2637. two

  2638. passages.

  2639. Chapter

  2640. 17

  2641. verse

  2642. 8

  2643. says

  2644. that

  2645. Amalek

  2646. came

  2647. and

  2648. fought

  2649. with

  2650. Israel.

  2651. Chapter

  2652. 18

  2653. verses

  2654. Jethro

  2655. came

  2656. to

  2657. ask

  2658. for

  2659. war.

  2660. Jethro

  2661. comes

  2662. for

  2663. peace.

  2664. Exodus

  2665. 17

  2666. 8

  2667. to

  2668. 16

  2669. repeatedly

  2670. speak

  2671. of

  2672. how

  2673. Moses

  2674. has

  2675. to

  2676. raise

  2677. up

  2678. his

  2679. hand

  2680. with

  2681. the

  2682. step

  2683. of

  2684. God

  2685. against

  2686. the

  2687. Amalekites.

  2688. But

  2689. in

  2690. Exodus

  2691. 18

  2692. 1

  2693. to

  2694. 12

  2695. Jethro

  2696. repeatedly

  2697. speaks

  2698. of

  2699. how

  2700. the

  2701. Lord

  2702. delivered

  2703. Israel

  2704. out

  2705. of

  2706. the

  2708. of

  2709. the

  2710. Egyptians.

  2711. Chapter

  2712. 17

  2713. verse

  2714. 8

  2715. Moses

  2720. us

  2721. men

  2722. to

  2724. out

  2725. in

  2726. war.

  2727. Chapter

  2730. 25

  2731. Moses

  2732. chooses

  2735. to

  2736. help

  2737. judge

  2738. the

  2739. people

  2740. in

  2741. times

  2742. of

  2743. peace.

  2744. Chapter

  2745. 17

  2746. verse

  2747. 12

  2748. Moses

  2749. sits

  2750. down

  2751. to

  2752. hold

  2753. up

  2754. the

  2755. staff

  2756. of

  2757. God

  2758. until

  2759. the

  2760. going

  2761. down

  2762. of

  2763. the

  2764. sun.

  2765. In

  2766. chapter

  2767. 18

  2768. verse

  2769. 13

  2770. Moses

  2771. sits

  2772. down

  2773. to

  2774. judge

  2775. the

  2776. people

  2777. from

  2778. morning

  2779. till

  2780. evening.

  2781. And

  2782. finally

  2783. in

  2784. chapter

  2785. 17

  2786. verse

  2787. 12

  2788. Moses

  2789. hands

  2790. grew

  2791. weary

  2792. or

  2793. literally

  2794. his

  2795. hands

  2796. grew

  2797. heavy

  2798. and

  2799. Aaron

  2800. and

  2801. her

  2802. had

  2803. to

  2804. help

  2805. him

  2806. bear

  2807. the

  2808. weight

  2809. and

  2810. in

  2811. 1818

  2812. Jethro

  2813. says

  2814. to

  2815. Moses

  2816. the

  2817. thing

  2818. is

  2819. too

  2820. heavy

  2821. for

  2822. you

  2823. it's

  2824. the

  2825. same

  2826. Hebrew

  2827. word

  2828. and

  2829. counsels

  2830. him

  2831. to

  2832. appoint

  2833. worthy

  2834. men

  2835. to

  2836. help

  2837. him

  2838. bear

  2839. the

  2840. weight.

  2841. So

  2842. in

  2843. this

  2844. way

  2845. Amalek

  2846. and

  2847. Jethro

  2848. are

  2849. case

  2850. studies

  2851. studies

  2852. in

  2853. contrast

  2854. of

  2855. how

  2856. even

  2857. Gentiles

  2858. can

  2859. inherit

  2860. God's

  2861. first

  2862. based

  2863. on

  2864. their

  2865. response

  2866. toward

  2867. God

  2868. and

  2869. toward

  2870. God's

  2871. people

  2872. because

  2873. Amalek

  2874. comes to

  2875. war

  2876. against

  2877. God's

  2878. people

  2879. the

  2880. Lord

  2881. will

  2882. war

  2883. against

  2884. him

  2885. generation

  2886. after

  2887. generation

  2888. because

  2889. Jethro

  2890. comes

  2891. in

  2892. peace

  2893. toward

  2894. God's

  2895. people

  2896. the

  2897. Lord

  2898. allows

  2899. him

  2900. to

  2901. join

  2902. God's

  2903. covenant

  2904. people

  2905. even

  2906. the

  2907. Gentiles

  2908. can

  2909. believe

  2910. in

  2911. the

  2912. Lord

  2913. and

  2914. be

  2915. included

  2916. this

  2917. is

  2918. a

  2919. fulfillment

  2920. of

  2921. what

  2922. God

  2923. had

  2924. promised

  2925. Abraham

  2926. in

  2927. Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  2928. chapter

  2929. 12

  2930. he

  2931. said

  2932. 17

  2933. verse

  2934. 15

  2935. when

  2936. Moses

  2937. builds

  2938. an

  2939. altar

  2940. he

  2941. names

  2942. it

  2943. the

  2944. Lord

  2945. is

  2946. my

  2947. banner

  2948. the

  2949. Lord

  2950. is

  2951. the

  2952. signal

  2953. or

  2954. flag

  2955. under

  2956. which

  2957. the

  2958. people

  2959. of

  2960. God

  2961. gather

  2962. in

  2963. battle

  2964. many

  2965. of

  2966. you

  2967. are

  2968. probably

  2969. familiar

  2970. with

  2971. the

  2972. iconic

  2973. photo

  2974. entitled

  2975. Raising

  2976. the

  2977. Flag

  2978. on

  2979. Iwo

  2980. Jima

  2981. you

  2982. guys

  2983. aware

  2984. of

  2985. that

  2987. it's

  3012. II

  3013. from

  3014. any

  3015. war

  3016. in

  3017. fact

  3018. it

  3019. was

  3020. taken

  3021. nearly

  3022. after

  3023. two

  3024. months

  3025. of

  3026. fight

  3027. hard

  3028. fought

  3029. battle

  3030. on

  3031. the

  3032. island

  3033. of

  3034. Iwo

  3035. Jima

  3036. the

  3037. island

  3038. was

  3039. significant

  3040. tactically

  3041. in

  3042. war

  3043. because

  3044. there

  3045. was

  3046. a

  3047. mountain

  3048. on

  3049. top

  3050. of

  3051. it

  3052. and

  3053. it

  3054. gave

  3055. people

  3056. the

  3057. ability

  3058. to

  3059. spot

  3060. what

  3061. the

  3062. enemies

  3063. were

  3064. doing

  3065. and

  3066. to

  3067. accurately

  3068. aim

  3069. their

  3070. artillery

  3071. and

  3072. so

  3073. toward

  3074. the

  3075. end

  3076. of

  3077. the

  3078. battle

  3079. six

  3080. U.S.

  3081. Marines

  3082. climbed up

  3083. the

  3084. mountain

  3085. to raise

  3086. the

  3087. American

  3088. flag

  3089. and

  3090. plant

  3091. it

  3092. there

  3093. to

  3094. claim

  3095. it

  3096. as

  3097. belonging

  3098. to

  3099. the

  3100. U.S.

  3101. and to

  3102. rally

  3103. the

  3104. troops

  3105. toward

  3106. it

  3107. it's

  3108. a

  3109. dramatic

  3110. picture

  3111. with

  3112. a lot

  3113. of

  3114. movement

  3115. and

  3116. the flag

  3117. streaming

  3118. in

  3119. the

  3120. wind

  3121. in

  3122. the

  3123. confusion

  3124. of

  3125. war

  3126. when

  3127. people

  3128. are

  3129. fighting

  3130. and

  3131. swords

  3132. are

  3133. clanging

  3134. and

  3135. guns

  3136. are

  3137. going

  3138. off

  3139. people

  3140. are

  3141. scattered

  3142. all

  3143. over

  3144. the

  3145. battlefield

  3146. and

  3147. people

  3148. are

  3149. dying

  3150. and

  3151. fearful

  3152. it's

  3153. in

  3154. those

  3155. times

  3156. that

  3157. a

  3158. banner

  3159. is

  3160. raised

  3161. a

  3162. signal

  3163. is

  3164. raised

  3165. to

  3166. say

  3167. all

  3168. of

  3169. you

  3170. who

  3171. is

  3172. with

  3173. us

  3174. gather

  3175. here

  3176. to

  3177. reform

  3178. so

  3179. that

  3180. we

  3181. might

  3182. know

  3183. who

  3184. is

  3185. with

  3186. us

  3187. so

  3188. we

  3189. can

  3190. fight

  3191. together

  3192. instead

  3193. of

  3194. being

  3195. scattered

  3196. and

  3197. being

  3198. slaughtered

  3199. out

  3200. on

  3201. the

  3202. battlefield

  3203. that's

  3204. how

  3205. a

  3206. banner

  3207. functions

  3208. that's

  3209. what

  3210. the

  3211. standard

  3212. does

  3213. it

  3214. provides

  3215. identity

  3216. for

  3217. the

  3218. people

  3219. who

  3220. gather

  3221. it

  3222. provides

  3223. security

  3224. for

  3225. the

  3226. people

  3227. that

  3228. gather

  3229. under

  3230. it

  3231. that's

  3232. why

  3233. psalm

    Psalms 60:4

  3234. 60

  3235. verse

  3236. 4

  3237. says

  3238. you

  3239. have

  3240. the

  3241. Lord

  3242. you

  3243. have

  3244. set

  3245. up

  3246. a

  3247. banner

  3248. for

  3249. those

  3250. who

  3251. fear

  3252. you

  3253. that

  3254. they

  3255. may

  3256. flee

  3257. to

  3258. it

  3259. from

  3260. the

  3261. bow

  3262. as

  3263. the

  3264. arrows

  3265. are

  3266. coming

  3267. you

  3268. flee

  3269. and

  3270. there's

  3271. a

  3272. prophecy

  3273. in

  3274. Isaiah

  3275. 11

  3276. that

  3277. tells

  3278. us

  3279. exactly

  3280. what

  3281. that

  3282. banner

  3283. is

  3284. that

  3285. God

  3286. has

  3287. set

  3288. up

  3289. or

  3290. more

  3291. accurately

  3292. who

  3293. that

  3294. banner

  3295. is

  3296. it

  3297. says

  3298. in

  3300. 11

  3301. 10

  3311. who

  3312. shall

  3314. as

  3315. a

  3317. for

  3318. the

  3320. that's

  3326. for

  3327. the

  3328. peoples

  3329. of

  3330. him

  3331. shall

  3332. the

  3333. nations

  3334. inquire

  3335. and

  3336. his

  3337. resting

  3338. place

  3339. shall

  3340. be

  3341. glorious

  3342. time

  3368. the

  3369. coastlands

  3370. of

  3371. the

  3372. sea

  3373. he

  3374. will

  3376. a

  3377. signal

  3378. for

  3379. the

  3401. the

  3420. a

  3421. descendant

  3430. when

  3431. the

  3432. Messiah

  3433. will

  3434. be

  3435. the

  3436. banner

  3437. that

  3438. gathers

  3439. all

  3440. of

  3441. God's

  3442. people

  3443. not

  3444. only

  3445. from

  3446. among

  3455. all

  3456. the

  3459. this

  3460. is

  3461. what

  3462. Jesus

  3463. was

  3464. fulfilling

  3465. in

  3466. John

  3467. 12

  3468. 32

  3469. when

  3470. he

  3471. said

  3472. when

  3473. I

  3474. am

  3475. lifted

  3476. up

  3477. from

  3478. the

  3479. earth

  3480. when

  3481. he

  3482. is

  3483. crucified

  3484. I

  3485. will

  3486. draw

  3487. all

  3488. people

  3489. to

  3490. myself

  3491. by

  3492. paying

  3493. for

  3494. the

  3507. by

  3508. rising

  3509. from

  3510. the

  3511. dead

  3512. Jesus

  3513. brought

  3514. a

  3515. new

  3516. era

  3517. of

  3518. salvation

  3519. for

  3520. all

  3521. nations

  3522. Jesus

  3523. is

  3524. our

  3526. Jesus

  3527. is

  3528. the

  3529. one

  3530. to

  3531. whom

  3532. we

  3533. are

  3536. there

  3537. is

  3538. a
