  1. Thank you for joining us this morning.

  2. Let us start with a word of prayer.

  3. Heavenly Father, Lord, you've brought us to this place.

  4. And Lord, we pray that you would quiet our hearts

  5. and that you would clear out all the things

  6. that are clouding our minds, our schedules, our thoughts,

  7. and that you would just clear the path

  8. for what you have to say to us this morning

  9. from Exodus 19.

  10. We pray that your spirit would be at work,

  11. that your spirit would encourage us,

  12. that your spirit would correct and help us

  13. as we seek to hold you as a holy God

  14. and to serve you correctly.

  15. And we pray these things in your holy and awesome name.

  16. Amen.

  17. All right, so we finished phase one of Exodus,

  18. the first 18 chapters.

  19. That is everything to get Israel out of Egypt

  20. and up to Mount Sinai, which is where we are now.

  21. Phase two is gonna be all the things

  22. that happen around Mount Sinai.

  23. So you have the commandments and the laws

  24. and the tabernacle and all the things that go in it.

  25. All those are gonna happen around Mount Sinai.

  26. Now, Exodus only goes up to chapter 40.

  27. They actually stay around Mount Sinai for much longer,

  28. but we won't stay with them that long.

  29. So what is the importance of this chapter

  30. as we look at it this morning?

  31. As we begin phase two of Exodus, what's the point?

  32. Chapter 19 of Exodus is a transitional point

  33. for the people of Israel.

  34. So they've been freed, as you know,

  35. from generations of slavery

  36. and brought into the wilderness.

  37. Not so they can just be let go,

  38. go where they want and live a life however they see fit.

  39. No, God has freed them to be a nation set apart for himself.

  40. He's rescuing them from themselves,

  41. from their sin nature,

  42. from their current course of destruction

  43. and self-centeredness and placing them on a course

  44. leading them towards holiness and blessings from God.

  45. The problem is they don't know how to relate to a holy God.

  46. And chapter 19 begins that process of teaching them that,

  47. preparing a people to live holy lives

  48. in the presence of a holy God.

  49. And while this chapter is for

  50. and talks about the people of Israel,

  51. it doesn't take us long before we realize

  52. that what's being taught and the truth there

  53. are helpful for us in our lives today.

  54. So Exodus 19 is the passage for this morning.

  55. If you would stand with me,

  56. we're going to read Exodus 19 together.

  57. On the third new moon,

  58. after the people of Israel had gone out

  59. of the land of Egypt,

  60. on that day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

  61. They set out from Rephidim

  62. and came into the wilderness of Sinai

  63. and they encamped in the wilderness.

  64. There Israel encamped before the mountain

  65. while Moses went up to God.

  66. The Lord called to him out of the mountain saying,

  67. Thus you shall say to the people,

  68. thus you shall say to the house of Jacob

  69. and tell the people of Israel,

  70. You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians

  71. and how I bore you on eagles' wings

  72. and brought you to myself.

  73. Now therefore,

  74. if you will indeed obey my voice

  75. and keep my covenant,

  76. you shall be my treasured possession

  77. among all peoples,

  78. for all the earth is mine.

  79. And you shall be to me

  80. a kingdom of priests

  81. and a holy nation.

  82. These are the words that you shall speak

  83. to the people of Israel.

  84. So Moses came and called the elders of the people

  85. and set before them all the words

  86. that the Lord had commanded him.

  87. All the people answered together and said,

  88. All that the Lord has spoken,

  89. and we will do.

  90. And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.

  91. And the Lord said to Moses,

  92. Behold, I am coming to you in a thick cloud

  93. that the people may hear when I speak with you

  94. and may also believe you forever.

  95. When Moses told the words of the people to the Lord,

  96. the Lord said to Moses,

  97. Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow

  98. and let them wash their garments

  99. and be ready for the third day.

  100. For on the third day,

  101. the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai

  102. in the sight of all the people.

  103. And you shall set limits for the people all around,

  104. saying,

  105. Take care not to go up into the mountain

  106. or touch the edge of it.

  107. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death.

  108. No hand shall touch him,

  109. but he shall be stoned or shot.

  110. Whether beast or man,

  111. he shall not live.

  112. When the trumpet sounds a long blast,

  113. they shall come up to the mountain.

  114. So Moses went down from the mountain to the people

  115. and consecrated the people,

  116. and they washed their garments.

  117. And he said to the people,

  118. Be ready for the third day.

  119. Do not go near a woman.

  120. On the morning of the third day,

  121. there were thunders and lightnings

  122. and a thick cloud on the mountain

  123. and a very loud trumpet blast,

  124. so that all the people in the camp trembled.

  125. Then Moses brought the people out of the camp

  126. to meet God,

  127. and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain.

  128. Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke

  129. because the Lord had descended on it in fire.

  130. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln,

  131. and the whole mountain trembled greatly.

  132. And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder,

  133. Moses spoke,

  134. and God answered him in thunder.

  135. The Lord came down on Mount Sinai

  136. to the top of the mountain,

  137. and the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain,

  138. and Moses went up.

  139. And the Lord said to Moses,

  140. Go down and warn the people,

  141. lest they break through to the Lord

  142. to look,

  143. and many of them perish.

  144. Also let the priests who come near to the Lord

  145. consecrate themselves,

  146. lest the Lord break out against them.

  147. And Moses said to the Lord,

  148. The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai,

  149. for you yourself warned us,

  150. saying,

  151. Set limits around the mountain

  152. and consecrate it.

  153. And the Lord said to him,

  154. Go down and come up bringing Aaron with you,

  155. but do not let the priest and the people

  156. break through to come up to the Lord,

  157. lest he break out against them.

  158. So Moses went down to the people and told them.

  159. You may be seated.

  160. These are the words of the Lord

  161. and his word for us this morning.

  162. So our passage this morning is going to be broken up,

  163. and we can see these breaks as we go through this chapter.

  164. They're going to be the promises from God,

  165. preparation for God,

  166. and the presence of God.

  167. So let's look at the promises from God first.

  168. I'm going to flip back.

  169. You won't have to,

  170. just to make it quicker.

  171. I'm going to jump back to Exodus chapter 3, verse 1.

    Exodus 3:1

  172. Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro,

  173. the priest of Midian,

  174. and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness

  175. and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

  176. And as we skip a few verses down,

  177. this is where God is meeting Moses in the burning bush.

  178. And God has called him to Pharaoh,

  179. and Moses said,

  180. Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh

  181. and bring the children of Egypt,

  182. the children out of Egypt?

  183. He said,

  184. But I will be with you,

  185. this is God,

  186. and this shall be a sign for you

  187. that I have sent you.

  188. When you have brought the people out of Egypt,

  189. you shall serve God on this mountain.

  190. So we find in chapter 19 at the very beginning,

  191. they are at this mountain.

  192. This reminds us,

  193. it reminds the people of Israel

  194. that what God promises,

  195. God completes.

  196. It is here where God is preparing for himself a people,

  197. a people to worship and commune with him,

  198. preparing them for the covenants and the laws

  199. that he was going to give to them,

  200. preparing a people to live holy lives

  201. in the presence of a holy God.

  202. As the people arrive to the mountain,

  203. they set up camp.

  204. And you'll notice in verse 3

  205. that Moses goes up to the mountain

  206. to hear from God.

  207. I think it's interesting for us to pause there

  208. and think about that for a moment

  209. because what do we commonly do

  210. when we get to a new place in our life?

  211. A place that God has led us.

  212. A new job,

  213. a new place of residence,

  214. maybe a new program of study

  215. that you were accepted into.

  216. Do we pause and listen

  217. to what the Lord has for us to hear

  218. and where he's moving next?

  219. Or I think our default mindset

  220. is to dig in,

  221. get busy,

  222. and what are my plans going forward?

  223. Moses gives us a good example here

  224. because he doesn't set up his tent.

  225. He doesn't make sure his hammock

  226. is facing the right direction

  227. or see how social media is doing,

  228. but he goes up to hear from God.

  229. And as he seeks God,

  230. God has a message for the people.

  231. First, God wants to remind the people

  232. of who they are.

  233. It says,

  234. Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob,

  235. and tell the people of Israel.

  236. Same group of people,

  237. two different phrases.

  238. The house of Jacob being the weakest

  239. of all the patriarchs,

  240. least stable.

  241. And so God is reminding them

  242. of their humble beginnings,

  243. but also warning them of that instability

  244. that they need to watch out for.

  245. He also calls them the people of Israel,

  246. pointing out the nation

  247. that they had become.

  248. God also wants to remind them

  249. of what he has done for them

  250. up to this point.

  251. In verse 4,

  252. You yourselves have seen

  253. what I did to the Egyptians.

  254. How I showed up.

  255. How I rescued you from Pharaoh

  256. and his army

  257. in a way that you would never have expected

  258. or have ever seen

  259. or will see in the future.

  260. That's what I did for you.

  261. He's not only reminding them

  262. of his protection,

  263. but his providence.

  264. You saw what I did to the Egyptians

  265. and how I bore you on eagles' wings

  266. and brought you to myself.

  267. This imagery of a majestic bird,

  268. strong and powerful,

  269. able to care for its young

  270. while at the same time

  271. a lethal bird of prey.

  272. He's saying,

  273. I cared for you.

  274. I divinely led you to myself.

  275. And it is my strength and my power

  276. that has kept you alive

  277. and brought you to this place

  278. where you are now.

  279. Now,

  280. it's important that we point out

  281. God's faithfulness

  282. to his chosen people

  283. before they start obeying

  284. and living for him.

  285. Because God doesn't demand obedience

  286. and say,

  287. if you're good enough,

  288. I'll love you.

  289. If you do all the right things,

  290. I will protect you.

  291. No, God says,

  292. I will choose you.

  293. I will show you my love.

  294. I will rescue you.

  295. And because of that,

  296. you will be a nation of people

  297. different than all the rest.

  298. God did that for his people

  299. and he's still doing that

  300. for us today.

  301. Romans 5.8 says this,

  302. but God shows his love for us

  303. in that while we were still sinners,

  304. Christ died for us.

  305. If you were not

  306. a child of God today,

  307. if you were not a believer

  308. in Jesus Christ,

  309. but you are here,

  310. somehow you feel drawn

  311. to seek God,

  312. that is God's work

  313. already happening

  314. in your life.

  315. And I would encourage you

  316. to continue to push on.

  317. Connect with someone today.

  318. Pray.

  319. Ask questions.

  320. Learn about how you can know God more.

  321. In verse 5,

  322. we see the actual promise

  323. that God is making with them.

  324. Verse 5 says this,

  325. Now therefore,

  326. if you will indeed

  327. obey my voice

  328. and keep my covenant,

  329. you shall be my treasured possession

  330. among all peoples,

  331. for all the earth is mine.

  332. Everything on the earth

  333. is the Lord's.

  334. whether we want to

  335. let go of control

  336. or not.

  337. All things,

  338. all people,

  339. God's possessions.

  340. He says,

  341. but you will be

  342. my treasured ones,

  343. my chosen people

  344. of all my possessions,

  345. of all my people,

  346. you will be

  347. my treasured ones.

  348. I was reminded

  349. of walking down a beach

  350. where there's just shells

  351. all over the place.

  352. You can take

  353. any of them,

  354. but you choose

  355. selective ones.

  356. This one I want.

  357. This one will be

  358. my chosen possession.

  359. The difference is

  360. we usually pick those shells

  361. because they're pretty

  362. or they match

  363. some project

  364. we want to do.

  365. God doesn't pick us

  366. because we're pretty

  367. or we're bringing

  368. the right traits

  369. and power

  370. to his plan.

  371. He picks us

  372. out of his sovereignty

  373. for his will.

  374. He also says

  375. in verse 6,

  376. and you shall be

  377. to me a kingdom

  378. of priests

  379. and a holy nation.

  380. Priests,

  381. as you know,

  382. mediate between God

  383. and the people.

  384. And the people

  385. of Israel

  386. were to be

  387. the ones

  388. who would mediate

  389. the blessings

  390. of God

  391. to the rest

  392. of the nations.

  393. The nations

  394. would know

  395. God better

  396. if the nation

  397. of Israel

  398. lived

  399. as God

  400. called them

  401. to live.

  402. Ultimately,

  403. they would

  404. mediate

  405. the blessings

  406. of God

  407. because the king,

  408. the Messiah,

  409. Jesus Christ,

  410. would come

  411. from

  412. the nation

  413. of Israel.

  414. Along with

  415. being a kingdom

  416. of priests,

  417. God says

  418. that you shall

  419. be a holy nation.

  420. You will live

  421. in the world,

  422. but you are

  423. to live different

  424. from the world,

  425. set apart

  426. and holy,

  427. distinct,

  428. defined

  429. for a purpose,

  430. for God

  431. and his glory.

  432. Peter,

  433. an apostle

  434. of Jesus

  435. in the New Testament,

  436. connects this promise,

  437. this calling

  438. to those

  439. who follow Jesus.

  440. 1 Peter 2,

  441. 9 and 10.

  442. But you are

  443. a chosen race,

  444. a royal priesthood,

  445. a holy nation,

  446. a people

  447. for his own possession,

  448. that you may

  449. proclaim

  450. the excellencies

  451. of him

  452. who called you

  453. out of darkness

  454. into his marvelous

  455. light.

  456. Once you were

  457. not a people,

  458. but now

  459. you are God's people.

  460. Once you have

  461. not received mercy,

  462. but now

  463. you have

  464. received mercy.

  465. That was fitting

  466. for the Israelites.

  467. It was written

  468. and given

  469. to us,

  470. Jews,

  471. Gentiles,

  472. after the cross

  473. of Christ

  474. and we are part

  475. of that as well.

  476. So we see

  477. that Moses

  478. comes down

  479. the mountain.

  480. He calls

  481. the elders

  482. of the people

  483. together

  484. and he delivers

  485. God's message

  486. to them.

  487. Verse 8

  488. gives us

  489. their response

  490. to that message.

  491. All the people

  492. answered together

  493. and said,

  494. all that the Lord

  495. has spoken

  496. we will do.

  497. And Moses

  498. reports those

  499. words of the people

  500. back to the Lord.

  501. God has given

  502. his promise,

  503. his covenant,

  504. they've accepted it.

  505. Now what happens?

  506. Verse 9,

  507. the Lord says

  508. to Moses,

  509. behold,

  510. I am coming to you

  511. in a thick cloud

  512. that the people

  513. may hear

  514. when I speak

  515. with you

  516. and may also

  517. believe you

  518. forever.

  519. It's at this point

  520. where God

  521. is moving

  522. his relationship

  523. closer to the people.

  524. They've accepted

  525. his

  526. question

  527. of obedience,

  528. his covenant

  529. towards them.

  530. They said

  531. that they will

  532. accept and follow.

  533. And so

  534. God moves

  535. closer to them.

  536. Not only that,

  537. but God is saying,

  538. I've been speaking

  539. through Moses

  540. this whole time.

  541. He's your mediator,

  542. but I want you

  543. to know that the words

  544. that I have been

  545. given him

  546. are the words

  547. that he's been

  548. given you.

  549. So when you hear

  550. Moses,

  551. you're hearing me.

  552. you can trust him.

  553. As God

  554. is planning

  555. to draw

  556. closer to his people,

  557. there's one problem

  558. and it's the main

  559. point of this passage

  560. and that's

  561. God's holiness.

  562. As he draws

  563. closer to the people,

  564. he cannot allow

  565. them to approach

  566. as they are.

  567. His perfection,

  568. his majesty,

  569. his holiness

  570. cannot allow it.

  571. If we think

  572. of the sun

  573. as an example,

  574. not exactly

  575. the same,

  576. but helpful,

  577. its existence

  578. is critical

  579. for everything

  580. that lives

  581. on the earth.

  582. Yet if we were

  583. to stare

  584. at the sun

  585. too long,

  586. we start

  587. to burn

  588. our eyes

  589. and risk

  590. permanent damage.

  591. If we stay

  592. outside too long,

  593. our skin

  594. starts to burn.

  595. If we were

  596. to try to travel

  597. or fly

  598. closer to the sun,

  599. we would either

  600. die from the heat

  601. or the radiation,

  602. depending on how

  603. you attempt

  604. to get there.

  605. But we can't

  606. say to the sun,

  607. sun,

  608. why are you

  609. so harsh?

  610. I mean,

  611. you're 93 million

  612. miles away,

  613. I just want to

  614. get a little closer

  615. and study you

  616. and know more

  617. about you.

  618. we know

  619. that it doesn't

  620. work that way.

  621. In several ways,

  622. that's what it's

  623. like with God

  624. and his holiness.

  625. We can't

  626. approach

  627. anything,

  628. we can't

  629. approach

  630. him

  631. in any way

  632. that we want.

  633. There are limits,

  634. there are requirements

  635. that are in place

  636. and that was true

  637. for the Israelites,

  638. it's true for us

  639. as well.

  640. Our second point

  641. is preparation

  642. for God.

  643. As they have

  644. gone through

  645. the promises

  646. from God

  647. and they have

  648. accepted this

  649. covenant,

  650. they get into

  651. this preparation

  652. phase.

  653. People must

  654. prepare themselves

  655. before God

  656. can come any

  657. closer to them

  658. or they get

  659. any closer to God.

  660. Verse 10 says,

  661. the Lord said

  662. to Moses,

  663. go to the people

  664. and consecrate

  665. them today

  666. and tomorrow.

  667. Let them wash

  668. their garments

  669. and be ready

  670. for the third day.

  671. for on the third

  672. day the Lord

  673. will come down

  674. on Mount Sinai

  675. in the sight

  676. of all the people.

  677. The Lord says,

  678. go tell the people

  679. to get ready.

  680. Not just go get ready

  681. because I'm going

  682. to show up

  683. in an hour or two,

  684. but I want you

  685. to spend time

  686. preparing for my

  687. arrival

  688. on the third day.

  689. We see there are

  690. several things

  691. that they are called

  692. to prepare,

  693. get prepared for

  694. for this meeting.

  695. The first one

  696. is they were called

  697. to wash their clothes.

  698. It might not seem

  699. like a big thing,

  700. but the idea was

  701. to have a mindset

  702. of holiness.

  703. As much as possible,

  704. prepare to meet me

  705. with an earthly level

  706. of cleanliness.

  707. Don't come wearing

  708. the same clothes

  709. you always wear.

  710. Don't come

  711. and show up

  712. with the dirt

  713. and the spoil

  714. and the filth

  715. of everyday life.

  716. Next,

  717. he wants to point out

  718. their schedules

  719. and their priorities.

  720. And telling them

  721. that he is coming

  722. on the third day,

  723. he is saying,

  724. I want your thoughts

  725. to be focused

  726. on meeting me.

  727. I want you to be

  728. anticipating my arrival.

  729. There isn't anything

  730. more important

  731. than meeting

  732. your God.

  733. I want your schedule

  734. to be adjusted

  735. and set

  736. so that I'm

  737. at the center.

  738. That is what

  739. a holy God

  740. desires

  741. and requires.

  742. God should be

  743. the center

  744. of our schedules.

  745. Everything moves

  746. and happens

  747. according to God's will

  748. and according

  749. to God's direction.

  750. Whether we see it,

  751. want to believe it,

  752. or not,

  753. if God is not

  754. the center of our life,

  755. if he is not

  756. the center

  757. of our schedule

  758. and our thoughts,

  759. then we have

  760. replaced him

  761. for another God.

  762. If he is

  763. Lord of our lives,

  764. then he will be

  765. the center

  766. of our lives.

  767. And that means

  768. our schedules

  769. and our time

  770. and our thoughts.

  771. After God

  772. gives these

  773. preparations

  774. to the people,

  775. we see that

  776. there are also

  777. warnings

  778. warnings about

  779. the mountain.

  780. We saw

  781. a similar warning

  782. when we looked

  783. at the burning bush.

  784. God tells Moses,

  785. take your sandals off

  786. because the ground

  787. around the bush

  788. is holy.

  789. We'll see it later

  790. when we get into

  791. the tabernacle.

  792. You've heard about

  793. the holiness

  794. surrounding the ark

  795. and the covenant

  796. and what the people

  797. could not do.

  798. there were things

  799. that God's people,

  800. even though they

  801. were God's people,

  802. they could not do.

  803. They could not come

  804. near or touch

  805. certain things

  806. that were connected

  807. to God's presence

  808. and his holiness.

  809. And the mountain

  810. was no different.

  811. Verses 12 and 13

  812. says,

  813. and you shall set

  814. limits for the people

  815. all around.

  816. Take care not to go

  817. up into the mountain

  818. or touch the edge

  819. of it.

  820. Whoever touches

  821. the mountain

  822. shall be put to death.

  823. No hand shall

  824. touch him

  825. but he should be

  826. stoned or shot,

  827. speaking of a bow

  828. and arrow.

  829. Whether beast

  830. or man,

  831. he shall not live.

  832. God had chosen

  833. Mount Sinai

  834. as the place

  835. where he would

  836. come down

  837. and speak

  838. to his people.

  839. And for that reason

  840. the mountain

  841. was set apart.

  842. It would become

  843. holy because

  844. the Lord's presence

  845. on it would

  846. make it holy.

  847. And it needed

  848. to be treated

  849. that way.

  850. In a similar

  851. way,

  852. this should

  853. remind us

  854. of our call

  855. to be holy

  856. as Christians.

  857. See,

  858. we are touched

  859. by God's holiness

  860. as a Christian

  861. because the Holy Spirit

  862. lives inside of us.

  863. 1 Corinthians 6,

  864. 19 and 20

  865. says this,

  866. We want to live

  867. holy lives

  868. because the Holy Spirit

  869. who is holy

  870. dwells inside of us.

  871. It makes no sense

  872. that a Holy Spirit

  873. live inside of us

  874. while we live a life

  875. that is filthy

  876. and sinful.

  877. Not that we won't

  878. live a life

  879. that we won't

  880. be perfect

  881. but we strive

  882. towards perfection.

  883. We strive

  884. towards holiness.

  885. As for the mountain,

  886. they were told

  887. to set limits

  888. around it.

  889. I don't know

  890. what that was.

  891. It could have been

  892. they drew a circle

  893. around the whole mountain

  894. in the dirt

  895. or maybe they

  896. went around

  897. and put stones

  898. around it.

  899. But something

  900. that would remind them

  901. don't go any further.

  902. The mountain

  903. is about to be

  904. God's holy place.

  905. If they touched it,

  906. they would defile it

  907. and God says

  908. the penalty of that

  909. is death.

  910. The point of all this

  911. was to prepare

  912. the people

  913. for this meeting

  914. but also

  915. what was coming.

  916. God was coming

  917. to dwell with them

  918. in the tabernacle

  919. and so he's preparing them

  920. their thought process,

  921. their way of life

  922. how to live

  923. in the presence

  924. of a holy God.

  925. So we see

  926. in verse 14 and 15

  927. that Moses goes

  928. down the mountain.

  929. He consecrates

  930. the people.

  931. They wash their clothes.

  932. He tells them

  933. to get ready.

  934. And then he says

  935. there's this odd phrase

  936. added on.

  937. He says

  938. do not go near

  939. a woman.

  940. Now just a couple

  941. comments

  942. on this phrase.

  943. First is

  944. it sounds like

  945. that's not what God said.

  946. Moses,

  947. I think you added

  948. that on.

  949. If we took

  950. a few minutes

  951. to dig into this passage

  952. a little bit more

  953. we would see

  954. that there is

  955. not different messages

  956. but there's summaries.

  957. Summaries of what God said.

  958. There's a summary

  959. of what Moses said.

  960. The two aren't identical

  961. but if we put them together

  962. we can get a better idea

  963. of the message

  964. that God has

  965. for his people.

  966. So we believe

  967. that Moses

  968. is giving this message

  969. that God said

  970. includes

  971. don't go near a woman.

  972. Now in saying that

  973. I want to say

  974. this isn't a slam

  975. towards women.

  976. This isn't

  977. anything bad.

  978. This isn't

  979. some sexist

  980. social distancing

  981. rule

  982. that's going on.

  983. Nothing negative

  984. at all.

  985. It's all about

  986. marital relations

  987. a couple

  988. not coming together

  989. prior to meeting

  990. with God.

  991. And this was

  992. for two reasons.

  993. The first was

  994. to help them

  995. align with the idea

  996. that they were

  997. to get themselves

  998. ready

  999. prepared

  1000. to meet with God.

  1001. No distractions.

  1002. You and God.

  1003. You and God.

  1004. You and God.

  1005. Get ready

  1006. to meet with God.

  1007. Secondly

  1008. it was also

  1009. we haven't gotten

  1010. to it yet

  1011. because we'll see it

  1012. in Leviticus

    Leviticus 15 chapter mention

  1013. chapter 15

  1014. but there will be

  1015. laws

  1016. there will be rules

  1017. about how

  1018. relations

  1019. between a man

  1020. and a woman

  1021. because of bodily

  1022. fluids

  1023. that would make them

  1024. ceremonially

  1025. unclean.

  1026. So we won't

  1027. dig into that

  1028. we'll save that

  1029. for a different sermon

  1030. but these rules

  1031. are being laid out

  1032. here

  1033. to get them

  1034. ready for

  1035. this

  1036. separating

  1037. themselves

  1038. becoming

  1039. clean

  1040. before they

  1041. come

  1042. and meet

  1043. God.

  1044. Preparing

  1045. them again

  1046. for this

  1047. meeting

  1048. at the

  1049. mountain

  1050. but also

  1051. meeting

  1052. in the

  1053. tabernacle

  1054. afterward

  1055. which would

  1056. go on

  1057. for much

  1058. longer.

  1059. An

  1060. infinite

  1061. holy

  1062. God

  1063. sharing

  1064. space

  1065. with

  1066. sinful

  1067. people.

  1068. They

  1069. needed

  1070. to

  1071. prepare

  1072. we

  1073. need

  1074. to

  1075. prepare

  1076. before

  1077. we

  1078. come

  1079. and

  1080. meet

  1081. a

  1082. holy

  1083. God.

  1084. Our

  1085. third point

  1086. is

  1087. the

  1088. presence

  1089. of

  1090. God.

  1091. It was

  1092. now the

  1093. third day

  1094. the time

  1095. when they

  1096. were to be

  1097. preparing

  1098. for God's

  1099. coming

  1100. and God

  1101. begins to

  1102. show up.

  1103. There's

  1104. lightning

  1105. thunder

  1106. and as

  1107. they

  1108. looked at

  1109. the

  1110. mountain

  1111. there's

  1112. a thick

  1113. cloud

  1114. around

  1115. the

  1116. mountain.

  1117. I like

  1118. thunderstorms

  1119. personally.

  1120. A lot

  1121. of our

  1122. kids like

  1123. thunderstorms.

  1124. It's

  1125. usually in

  1126. the safety

  1127. of sitting

  1128. on a

  1129. porch

  1130. or inside

  1131. a house.

  1132. Imagine

  1133. yourselves

  1134. at the

  1135. foot of

  1136. a mountain

  1137. and a

  1138. thunderstorm

  1139. comes out.

  1140. Not just

  1141. any

  1142. thunderstorm

  1143. but a

  1144. thunderstorm

  1145. that God

  1146. is bringing

  1147. about.

  1148. And then

  1149. there's this

  1150. loud trumpet

  1151. blast.

  1152. Have you

  1153. ever heard

  1154. you're

  1155. standing

  1156. somewhere

  1157. and

  1158. unexpectedly

  1159. somebody

  1160. blasts

  1161. a trumpet?

  1162. It is

  1163. unnerving.

  1164. It is

  1165. very difficult

  1166. to take.

  1167. It sends

  1168. chills

  1169. up your

  1170. spine

  1171. if you're

  1172. close enough

  1173. and it's

  1174. loud enough.

  1175. That was

  1176. their signal

  1177. to go

  1178. and meet

  1179. God.

  1180. And in

  1181. verses

  1182. 17 and

  1183. 18

  1184. Moses

  1185. brings the

  1186. people out

  1187. of the

  1188. camp to

  1189. meet God

  1190. and they

  1191. took their

  1192. stand at

  1193. the foot

  1194. of the

  1195. mountain.

  1196. Now

  1197. Mount Sinai

  1198. was wrapped

  1199. in smoke

  1200. because the

  1201. Lord had

  1202. descended on

  1203. it in

  1204. fire.

  1205. Here it

  1206. says the

  1207. Lord descended

  1208. on it in

  1209. fire.

  1210. If we look

  1211. back at

  1212. verse 9 it

  1213. says that he

  1214. was coming

  1215. in a thick

  1216. cloud.

  1217. Seems like

  1218. there's two

  1219. different images

  1220. here but if

  1221. you remember

  1222. as we've

  1223. gone through

  1224. the book

  1225. of Exodus

  1226. the Lord

  1227. has showed

  1228. up in a

  1229. fire and

  1230. in a

  1231. cloud

  1232. together.

  1233. It happened

  1234. at the

  1235. crossing of

  1236. the Red

  1237. Sea.

  1238. It happened

  1239. as God

  1240. led them

  1241. through the

  1242. wilderness.

  1243. It will

  1244. happen as

  1245. the tabernacle

  1246. shows up

  1247. and it

  1248. happens here.

  1249. God

  1250. descends on

  1251. the mountain

  1252. and there's

  1253. smoke going

  1254. up like

  1255. a kiln.

  1256. Like a

  1257. hot oven

  1258. that's made

  1259. hot for a

  1260. purpose and

  1261. smoke is

  1262. coming up

  1263. from it.

  1264. As God

  1265. comes down

  1266. so powerful

  1267. in this

  1268. event that

  1269. the whole

  1270. mountain

  1271. trembled

  1272. greatly.

  1273. I don't

  1274. know if

  1275. anybody here

  1276. has been

  1277. in an

  1278. earthquake.

  1279. Any

  1280. earthquake?

  1281. A couple?

  1282. I've been

  1283. in one but

  1284. it was really

  1285. tiny.

  1286. I didn't

  1287. really feel

  1288. anything.

  1289. I just

  1290. kind of

  1291. saw a

  1292. bush shake.

  1293. I thought

  1294. it was

  1295. the wind.

  1296. But imagine

  1297. being at the

  1298. foot of the

  1299. mountain.

  1300. A mountain

  1301. that is not

  1302. supposed to

  1303. move.

  1304. And you're

  1305. in thunder

  1306. and lightning.

  1307. And this

  1308. huge cloud

  1309. of fire

  1310. and cloud

  1311. is coming

  1312. down on the

  1313. mountain.

  1314. And the

  1315. mountain is

  1316. shaking as

  1317. you stand

  1318. there.

  1319. there.

  1320. Verse 19

  1321. the sound of

  1322. the trumpet

  1323. grew louder

  1324. as Moses

  1325. speaks and

  1326. God answers

  1327. him in the

  1328. thunder.

  1329. There the

  1330. Israelites stand

  1331. around the

  1332. mountain as

  1333. observers and

  1334. participants in

  1335. this terrifying

  1336. and awe

  1337. inspiring meeting

  1338. between them

  1339. and a holy

  1340. God.

  1341. A holy God

  1342. that called

  1343. them out

  1344. there.

  1345. there.

  1346. And as

  1347. they stand

  1348. there,

  1349. Moses again

  1350. called up

  1351. by God

  1352. to receive

  1353. another message.

  1354. We see

  1355. that in

  1356. verses 21

  1357. and 22.

  1358. The Lord

  1359. says,

  1360. go down

  1361. and warn

  1362. the people

  1363. lest they

  1364. break through

  1365. to the Lord

  1366. to look

  1367. and many

  1368. of them

  1369. perish.

  1370. Also let

  1371. the priest

  1372. who come

  1373. near to the

  1374. Lord

  1375. consecrate

  1376. themselves

  1377. lest the

  1378. Lord break

  1379. out against

  1380. them.

  1381. God wants

  1382. Moses to

  1383. warn the

  1384. people again

  1385. not to try

  1386. and get

  1387. closer.

  1388. Don't move

  1389. closer to the

  1390. mountain.

  1391. Don't try to

  1392. get a look

  1393. at me any

  1394. more than

  1395. what I've

  1396. already given

  1397. you.

  1398. There are

  1399. specific directions

  1400. here also for

  1401. priests which

  1402. we haven't seen

  1403. up until this

  1404. point so we're

  1405. not sure how

  1406. they serve but

  1407. they're directed

  1408. to consecrate

  1409. themselves.

  1410. Maybe they

  1411. stood in front

  1412. of the people

  1413. as between

  1414. the mountain

  1415. itself and

  1416. the people

  1417. I don't

  1418. know but

  1419. they like

  1420. the rest of

  1421. the people

  1422. could not

  1423. come any

  1424. closer.

  1425. Moses answers

  1426. God by

  1427. saying oh

  1428. the people

  1429. wouldn't do

  1430. that because

  1431. you warned

  1432. us not to

  1433. you told us

  1434. not to come

  1435. near the

  1436. mountain you

  1437. told us to

  1438. set limits.

  1439. This response

  1440. actually is a

  1441. little comical

  1442. as you think

  1443. about all the

  1444. times that the

  1445. people of

  1446. Israel have

  1447. forgotten God

  1448. forgotten what

  1449. he said or

  1450. just not

  1451. obeyed him.

  1452. It also

  1453. seems that

  1454. maybe Moses

  1455. doesn't quite

  1456. grasp the

  1457. severity of

  1458. God's command

  1459. to keep them

  1460. at a distance.

  1461. It's like when

  1462. you know the

  1463. danger surrounding

  1464. something that

  1465. someone else

  1466. doesn't quite

  1467. get.

  1468. Like telling a

  1469. two-year-old not

  1470. to try to plug

  1471. in a power

  1472. cord.

  1473. They've seen it

  1474. happen.

  1475. They could

  1476. probably do it

  1477. but they don't

  1478. understand the

  1479. danger around

  1480. that outlet.

  1481. That it could

  1482. kill them if

  1483. it's not done

  1484. right.

  1485. Moses says no

  1486. no no they

  1487. get it they'll

  1488. be fine Lord.

  1489. But God knows

  1490. the thoughts of

  1491. the people.

  1492. He knows their

  1493. propensity to

  1494. disobey and do

  1495. what they want.

  1496. It's at this

  1497. point where God

  1498. could have given

  1499. Moses a little

  1500. holy shove down

  1501. the mountain and

  1502. said listen go

  1503. warn the people

  1504. because I'm

  1505. serious.

  1506. Don't get any

  1507. closer.

  1508. But instead

  1509. God is gracious

  1510. and he gives

  1511. Moses kind of a

  1512. way out.

  1513. A reason to go

  1514. back down the

  1515. mountain.

  1516. He said listen go

  1517. down and come up

  1518. bringing Aaron

  1519. with you and give

  1520. the people another

  1521. warning not to get

  1522. any closer.

  1523. And that's what

  1524. Moses does is he

  1525. obeys the Lord and

  1526. goes and tells the

  1527. people.

  1528. See God is not

  1529. just a little bit

  1530. bigger a little bit

  1531. stronger than us.

  1532. He's also not a

  1533. genie that we just

  1534. rub when we need

  1535. something.

  1536. How we view God

  1537. how we treat God

1538. how we live for God

  1539. should reflect his

  1540. perfection his power

  1541. his majesty his

  1542. holiness.

  1543. goodness.

  1544. That's what the

  1545. Israelites had to

  1546. learn.

  1547. It's what we are

  1548. learning as

  1549. Christians as

  1550. followers of God.

  1551. This morning we

  1552. have some flowers

  1553. over here on the

  1554. table.

  1555. I actually prayed

  1556. for these flowers

  1557. this morning.

  1558. I had an example

  1559. to end our

  1560. message this

  1561. morning and I

  1562. couldn't find

  1563. flowers that I

  1564. liked and so I

  1565. said God if this

  1566. is a good

  1567. illustration that's

  1568. helpful I need

  1569. flowers.

1570. So I come in this

  1571. morning and there's

  1572. flowers.

  1573. So I asked before I

  1574. did this I'm not

  1575. just going to like

  1576. destroy the flowers

  1577. but I'm going to

  1578. take one.

  1579. I'm going to take a

  1580. flower here.

  1581. This bouquet of

  1582. flowers represents

  1583. mankind.

  1584. Beings created by

  1585. God with limited

  1586. abilities and with

  1587. timelines that are

  1588. already marked out

  1589. by God.

  1590. How long they'll

  1591. be, how short

  1592. they'll be.

  1593. What God did for

  1594. the Israelites and

  1595. what God is

  1596. continuing to do

  1597. today and all

  1598. through history is

  1599. to set apart, to

  1600. take from mankind

  1601. people he desires to

  1602. be set apart for

  1603. him so that his

  1604. glory is known in

  1605. a fallen, self

  1606. focused and dying

  1607. world.

  1608. Like a light, like

  1609. a city on a

  1610. hill.

  1611. We are still

  1612. people.

  1613. We're just called

  1614. to live separate.

  1615. Different from the

  1616. world.

  1617. We're still people

  1618. like the world,

  1619. called to live

  1620. differently from the

  1621. world.

  1622. We have been set

  1623. apart to live

  1624. wholly for the

  1625. glory of God.

  1626. Let's pray

  1627. together.

  1628. Lord, we're

  1629. thankful for this

  1630. chapter and for the

  1631. seriousness that you've

  1632. placed around your

  1633. holiness.

  1634. We may never

  1635. completely grasp the

  1636. depth of your

  1637. holiness, of your

  1638. majesty, of your

  1639. power, of your

  1640. other worldliness.

  1641. You are so

  1642. different from us.

  1643. Lord, we pray that

1644. you would help us to

1645. learn that day by day,

1646. to grow in that, to

  1647. understand you are a

  1648. holy God.

  1649. You are also a

  1650. loving God who

  1651. provided a way of

  1652. salvation.

1653. But you have called us

1654. out to live lives that

  1655. are different.

1656. So Lord, we pray that

1657. you would help us to

1658. do that in a way that

  1659. brings you glory.

  1660. That shows the world

  1661. around us your glory.

  1662. That you would be

  1663. magnified, Lord.

1664. We pray these things in

  1665. your name.

  1666. Amen.

  1667. Amen.

  1668. Amen.

  1669. Amen.

  1670. Amen.

  1671. Amen.

  1672. Amen.

  1673. Amen.

  1674. Amen.

  1675. Amen.

  1676. Amen.

  1677. Amen.

  1678. Amen.

  1679. Amen.

  1680. Amen.

  1681. Amen.

  1682. Amen.

  1683. Amen.

  1684. Amen.
