  1. Please turn with me in your Bibles to Exodus chapter 20.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  2. We're going through a series in the book of Exodus,

  3. and we're slowing down in Exodus chapter 20

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  4. to take 10 weeks to go through the Ten Commandments.

  5. We're on the second commandment today.

  6. I am going to preach on verses 4 to 6,

  7. because we preached on verses 1 to 3 last week,

  8. but I'm going to read from verses 1 to 6.

  9. You get the context of the verses.

  10. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  11. Heavenly Father, Your Word is precious to us.

  12. It is more precious to us than refined gold,

  13. because in Your Word, You have revealed Yourself to us,

  14. because in Your Word, we encounter Jesus, our Savior,

  15. who makes us wise for salvation.

  16. Because in Your Word, we have life.

  17. We find Your truth.

  18. So we ask again that You would speak to us this morning.

  19. We humble ourselves before You.

  20. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  21. If you would please stand with me, if you are able,

  22. for the reading of God's Word.

  23. Exodus chapter 20, verses 1 through 6.

    Exodus 20:1–6

  24. And God spoke all these words, saying,

  25. I am the Lord, your God,

  26. who brought you out of the land of Egypt,

  27. out of the house of slavery.

  28. You shall have no other gods before me.

  29. You shall not make for yourself a carved image

  30. or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above

  31. or that is in the earth beneath

  32. or that is in the water under the earth.

  33. You shall not bow down to them or serve them,

  34. for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,

  35. visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children

  36. to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,

  37. but showing steadfast love to thousands

  38. of those who love me and keep my commandments.

  39. This is God's holy and authoritative Word.

  40. Please be seated.

  41. The saying, a picture is worth a thousand words,

  42. is said to have emerged in the U.S.

  43. sometime in the 20th century in the advertising industry,

  44. pointing out the fact that a single image

  45. can convey multiple ideas at once.

  46. We gravitate toward images,

  47. and images tend to leave indelible marks on our minds.

  48. If you read a novel, for example,

  49. and then you watch a movie version of it,

  50. when you go back to read the novel,

  51. you can't help but conjure up those images

  52. that you've seen in the movies,

  53. no matter how inaccurate they may be

  54. and no matter how unfaithful they may be

  55. to the actual text.

  56. I'm sure many of you can relate to the experience

  57. of seeing images that you wish you could unsee,

  58. whether it's a graphic image that inflames your lust

  59. or a dark, frightening image that gives you nightmares

  60. when sleeping.

  61. And because these images are powerful,

  62. they can also be very dangerous.

  63. They can hijack our imaginations

  64. and control our thinking about people and things.

  65. Images can be very misleading.

  66. Many pictures taken at unfortunate moments

  67. out of context have cost people their jobs and reputations.

  68. Conversely, many airbrushed and carefully crafted images

  69. have shaped perceptions of people

  70. that are far from the reality.

  71. The second word of the Ten Commandments

  72. addresses these concerns about images.

  73. It teaches us that rather than making

  74. and worshipping images of creatures,

  75. we are to worship the word of God,

  76. Jesus Christ,

  77. who is the image of the invisible God.

  78. So first, we're going to look at the command,

  79. the images of creatures,

  80. and the motivation to obey this command,

  81. the jealousy of God.

  82. And third, we're going to see the fulfillment

  83. of this command in the image of God,

  84. Jesus Christ.

  85. It says in verses 4 to 5,

  86. you shall not make for yourself a carved image

  87. or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above

  88. or that is in the earth beneath

  89. or that is in the water under the earth.

  90. You shall not bow down to them or serve them.

  91. So this is referring to kind of three divisions

  92. of the visible created world in Genesis 1.

  93. The heavens where the birds rule,

  94. the ground where the livestock and the animals rule

  95. and the humans ultimately rule

  96. and the waters below where the fish rule.

  97. And so he's in this command

  98. including all of God's creation,

  99. all created beings.

  100. You are not to make images of them.

  101. However, that doesn't mean that

  102. you need to go and burn your painting of the dog,

  103. of your dog,

  104. or that Michelangelo was an idolater

  105. for making his famous sculpture of David.

  106. The second commandment does not bar

  107. all painting sculptures in stained glass windows

  108. depicting animals and humans.

  109. The Bible is not anti-art.

  110. In fact, later in Exodus 31,

  111. the Lord commissions,

  112. he gifts and commissions Bezalel and Oholiab

  113. to create art inside the tabernacle,

  114. including weaving drawings of the cherubim,

  115. the angels, into the curtains

  116. and making sculptures of cherubim

  117. with their wings spread over the Ark of the Covenant.

  118. Not only that,

  119. in Numbers 21, 6-9,

  120. when fiery serpents were killing the Israelites

  121. due to their rebelling against the Lord,

  122. God himself commanded Moses

  123. to create a bronze serpent,

  124. make it,

  125. and to set it on a pole

  126. so that people might look upon it

  127. and be healed.

  128. So it was a memorial,

  129. and it was kept as a memorial for God's people.

  130. So it's not that all images are forbidden.

  131. The connection is in verse 5,

  132. because verse 4 is joined to verse 5.

  133. It says,

  134. You shall not bow down to them

  135. or serve them.

  136. The point is that

  137. we must not make any image

  138. of anything or anyone

  139. for the purpose of worshipping them.

  140. That is why later in 2 Kings 18, verse 4,

    2 Kings 18:4

  141. when the Israelites start making offerings

  142. to the very bronze serpent

  143. that God had commanded Moses to make,

  144. King Hezekiah rightly smashes it into pieces

  145. to stop the idolatry.

  146. Unfortunately,

  147. this has been an all-too-common practice

  148. in human history.

  149. The heavens and the earth

  150. and the waters each have great creatures

  151. that have amazed human beings

  152. throughout history,

  153. and they have been tempted to worship them.

  154. For example,

  155. if we were to behold the Andean condor,

  156. the largest bird of prey on earth,

  157. spreading out its majestic wings

  158. up to 10 feet 9 inches long

  159. and defying gravity

  160. and soaring as high as

  161. 18,000 feet in the heavens

  162. with the Andean mountains

  163. on the backdrop,

  164. imagine that awe-inspiring sight.

  165. It was so inspiring

  166. that the ancient Andean civilizations

  167. in South America

  168. associated the Andean condor

  169. with their sun god

  170. and believed that it ruled

  171. the upper world.

  172. If we were to behold

  173. the African savannah elephant

  174. weighing a whopping 24,000 pounds

  175. and standing over 13 feet tall

  176. and every time it walks,

  177. it's shaking the ground

  178. and that rumble spreads

  179. to four miles away,

  180. we would marvel at it.

  181. So maybe it's not surprising

  182. that many cultures

  183. worshipped gods

  184. and represented gods

  185. as elephants.

  186. Hindu cosmology

  187. says that the earth

  188. is propped up

  189. by mythical world elephants

  190. and Ganesha,

  191. the elephant god,

  192. is one of the most popular gods

  193. in the Hindu pantheon.

  194. If you were to behold

  195. a southern humpback whale,

  196. which can weigh

  197. nearly 200,000 pounds

  198. and stretch nearly 60 feet high

  199. or 60 feet in length,

  200. and then it could still

  201. haul its great body

  202. above the water

  203. and breach the surface

  204. of the Pacific Ocean,

  205. you would stand amazed.

  206. Perhaps that's why

  207. it's used as a representation

  208. of Tangaroa,

  209. the sea god

  210. that controls the tides

  211. and the mythology

  212. of the Maori people

  213. in New Zealand.

  214. Similarly,

  215. the foreign gods

  216. we encounter

  217. in the Old Testament

  218. in Egypt and Canaan

  219. are often associated

  220. with some aspect

  221. of creation

  222. and worship

  223. as some creature,

  224. including Anubis,

  225. a jackal,

  226. Horus,

  227. a falcon,

  228. Pharaoh,

  229. a serpent,

  230. Baal,

  231. a bull or ram,

  232. Dagon,

  233. a fish,

  234. Asherah,

  235. a woman.

  236. That reminds us

  237. that human beings

  238. are also merely creatures

  239. whose images

  240. we must not create

  241. for worship.

  242. We might think

  243. that we're no longer

  244. susceptible

  245. to the worship

  246. of creatures,

  247. but in truth,

  248. we are.

  249. There are people

  250. whose rooms

  251. are filled

  252. with posters,

  253. cards,

  254. and other images

  255. of sports stars,

  256. athletes,

  257. and they spend

  258. hundreds of thousands

  259. of dollars

  260. to collect memorabilia

  261. connected to them.

  262. And they pay thousands

  263. of dollars

  264. to go to all their games,

  265. and after they're inducted

  266. to the Hall of Fame,

  267. they go to Springfield

  268. or Cooperstown

  269. or Canton,

  270. and they literally

  271. go pay homage.

  272. That's what they call it.

  273. Before the bust

  274. or the statue

  275. of the athlete.

  276. Sometimes star athletes

  277. are treated like demigods

  278. of Greek mythology

  279. like Hercules

  280. or Achilles.

  281. I recently saw the trailer

  282. of the movie Elvis.

  283. Have you guys seen that?

  284. I don't know if it's good

  285. because I haven't seen it.

  286. And he's singing

  287. and, you know,

  288. prancing around the stage

  289. and he is playing guitar

  290. and he's singing

  291. and the crowds

  292. are screaming

  293. at the top of their logs

  294. and stretching their arms

  295. to try to reach him

  296. and women are literally

  297. swooning in front of him

  298. and falling.

  299. And it's been over 45 years

  300. since Elvis' death.

  301. But still,

  302. to this day,

  303. thousands of Elvis fans

  304. make what they call

  305. the pilgrimage

  306. to Graceland

  307. every year

  308. to pay tribute to him.

  309. They hold a candlelight

  310. vigil service

  311. at his gravesite,

  312. which looks a lot like

  313. a worship service.

  314. And there's an American

  315. music journalist

  316. named Robert Christgau

  317. who says this about Elvis.

  318. He says,

  319. I know he invented

  320. rock and roll

  321. in a manner of speaking,

  322. but that's not why

  323. he is worshipped

  324. as a god today.

  325. He is worshipped

  326. as a god today

  327. because in addition

  328. to inventing rock and roll,

  329. he was the greatest

  330. ballad singer

  331. this side of Frank Sinatra

  332. because the spiritual

  333. translucence

  334. and reigned in-gut sexuality

  335. of his slow weeper

  336. and torchy pop blues

  337. still activate

  338. the hormones

  339. and slavish devotion

  340. of millions of female

  341. human beings worldwide.

  342. Justin Bieber

  343. Why are you guys laughing?

  344. Has 114.1 million

  345. Twitter followers.

  346. That's more number

  347. of followers

  348. than adherents

  349. of Judaism

  350. worldwide.

  351. And they call themselves

  352. believers.

  353. And some of the more

  354. extreme believers

  355. send death threats

  356. to anyone who dares

  357. to harm Justin Bieber

  358. or criticize him

  359. or refuse to give him

  360. a Grammy.

  361. Korean pop boy bands

  362. and girl bands

  363. are literally known as

  364. idols.

  365. And if you consider

  366. BTS' fanatic fan base,

  367. I think that's an apt description.

  368. So this kind of extreme

  369. celebrity devotion

  370. is so widespread today

  371. that psychiatrists now

  372. actually have an official

  373. term for it.

  374. Celebrity worship syndrome.

  375. CWS.

  376. Which is an obsessive

  377. addictive disorder

  378. where people are

  379. overly invested in the

  380. details of celebrities'

  381. personal and professional

  382. life.

  383. But no matter how

  384. impressive or powerful

  385. an animal might be,

  386. no matter how

  387. accomplished

  388. and authoritative

  389. and successful

  390. or even holy

  391. a man or woman

  392. might be,

  393. the inescapable reality

  394. is that they are all

  395. mere creatures.

  396. And therefore,

  397. it is tragic

  398. to worship them.

  399. We ought to stand

  400. in wonder of

  401. and worship

  402. the Creator

  403. who made them

  404. because the marvelous

  405. works in creation

  406. point to God's

  407. eternal power

  408. and divine nature.

  409. The God who created

  410. nature transcends

  411. nature and therefore

  412. cannot be reduced

  413. to things that are

  414. in nature.

  415. Romans 1, 21-25

  416. hits the nail

  417. right on the head

  418. in its description

  419. of sinful humanity.

  420. It says,

  421. For although they knew God,

  422. they did not honor Him

  423. as God

  424. or give thanks to Him,

  425. but they became

  426. futile in their thinking

  427. and their foolish hearts

  428. were darkened.

  429. Claiming to be wise,

  430. they became fools

  431. and exchanged

  432. the glory

  433. of the immortal God

  434. for the images

  435. resembling mortal man

  436. and birds

  437. and animals

  438. and creeping things.

  439. Therefore,

  440. God gave them up

  441. in the lusts

  442. of their hearts

  443. to impurity,

  444. to the dishonoring

  445. of their bodies

  446. among themselves

  447. because they exchanged

  448. the truth about God

  449. for a lie

  450. and worshipped

  451. and served the creature

  452. rather than the Creator

  453. who is blessed forever.

  454. Amen.

  455. Recall how God created

  456. man and woman

  457. in Genesis 1-27.

  458. So God created man

  459. in His own image.

  460. In the image of God,

  461. He created him.

  462. Male and female,

  463. He created them.

  464. If you examine

  465. Egyptian and Assyrian texts

  466. written around the same time

  467. as the book of Genesis,

  468. they speak of idols

  469. and images of gods

  470. being placed inside

  471. the temples of those gods

  472. and they believe

  473. that these images

  474. were actually inhabited

  475. by the deity,

  476. indwelled by the deity.

  477. But in Genesis,

  478. the Lord,

  479. the Eden,

  480. is styled as a temple,

  481. described as a temple,

  482. but He does not create

  483. an idol.

  484. Instead,

  485. He creates image,

  486. His image bearers,

  487. man and woman,

  488. because they are the ones

  489. that are to represent God

  490. to the rest of creation

  491. because they are the ones

  492. that are to lead

  493. the worship of God.

  494. And so for God's image bearers

  495. who are to lead

  496. all creation

  497. in worship

  498. to instead

  499. worship the things

  500. that are in creation,

  501. to bow before

  502. the creatures themselves

  503. is far below our station.

  504. We are created

  505. to worship the creator,

  506. not creatures.

  507. But this commandment

  508. doesn't merely forbid

  509. the worship of false gods.

  510. It also warns us

  511. against worshiping

  512. the true God falsely.

  513. Later in Exodus 32,

  514. during the prolonged

  515. absence of Moses,

  516. the Israelites

  517. hit the panic button

  518. because they don't think

  519. Moses is coming back

  520. and they think

  521. that they've lost

  522. the mediator

  523. between God and them.

  524. And so they make

  525. a golden calf

  526. and worship that idol.

  527. And it's easy for us

  528. to think that

  529. they were forsaking Yahweh

  530. and turning to a false,

  531. different God.

  532. But if you read

  533. the narrative carefully,

  534. you can see that

  535. they're actually setting up

  536. the golden calf

  537. as an image

  538. or representation

  539. of Yahweh.

  540. Here in Exodus 20,

    Exodus 20:2

  541. verse 2,

  542. Yahweh says,

  543. I am the Lord

  544. your God

  545. who brought you

  546. out of the land

  547. of Egypt.

  548. But there in Exodus

    Exodus 32:4

  549. 32, verse 4,

  550. the Israelites say

  551. of the golden calf,

  552. these are your gods,

  553. O Israel,

  554. who brought you up

  555. out of the land

  556. of Egypt.

  557. They're not saying

  558. this is a new God

  559. that you should worship.

  560. They're saying

  561. this is the old God,

  562. Yahweh,

  563. who brought you

  564. out of Egypt.

  565. And then Aaron

  566. builds an altar

  567. right before

  568. the golden calf

  569. and then he proclaims

  570. a feast to Yahweh,

  571. to the Lord.

  572. So the Israelites

  573. are not rewriting history

  574. by saying that

  575. golden calf

  576. and not Yahweh

  577. brought them out

  578. of Egypt.

  579. They're saying

  580. that the golden calf

  581. represents the Lord.

  582. It is the image

  583. of Yahweh.

  584. So that's a violation

  585. of the second commandment.

  586. They created the image

  587. because they thought

  588. that it would keep them

  589. connected to the Lord.

  590. And when they fear

  591. the absence of God

  592. due to the absence

  593. of Moses,

  594. they reduce God

  595. into something

  596. that they can control,

  597. something tangible,

  598. something that they can see.

  599. But ironically,

  600. the creation of the image

  601. is tantamount to idolatry.

  602. So to rub that point in,

  603. Moses describes

  604. the incident in Exodus 32

  605. as if the Israelites

  606. were creating

  607. multiple gods,

  608. even though they're only

  609. creating one golden calf.

  610. They say to themselves,

  611. these are your gods

  612. in the plural.

  613. So they're actually

  614. resorting to polytheism

  615. when they try to create

  616. an idol to represent God.

  617. Because an idol

  618. cannot rightly represent God.

  619. There are several reasons

  620. why images of God

  621. must not be used in worship,

  622. why they cannot rightly

  623. stand for God.

  624. And first reason

  625. is that they always

  626. misrepresent God.

  627. In Deuteronomy 4,

  628. where Moses reiterates

  629. the Ten Commandments,

  630. he says,

  631. since you saw no form

  632. on the day that the Lord

  633. spoke to you at Horeb

  634. out of the midst of the fire,

  635. beware lest you act corruptly

  636. by making a carved image

  637. for yourselves

  638. in the form of any figure.

  639. When God spoke to the Israelites

  640. at Mount Horeb,

  641. he revealed no form

  642. or appearance.

  643. As 1 Timothy 1.17 says,

  644. God is invisible.

  645. Why?

  646. Because as John 4.24 says,

  647. God is spirit.

  648. And those who make images

  649. of the invisible God

  650. are publishing lies about God

  651. because they are representing God

  652. in ways that he has not

  653. himself revealed.

  654. Habakkuk 2.18 puts it pointedly,

  655. What profit is an idol

  656. when its maker has shaped it?

  657. A metal image,

  658. a teacher of lies.

  659. Images we make

  660. can only be lies

  661. that falsely represent God.

  662. The second reason

  663. why images are forbidden

  664. is that they domesticate God.

  665. The nations surrounding Israel

  666. could not conceive a deity

  667. without the aid of images.

  668. So they manufactured idols

  669. and held special rituals

  670. to attract the presence

  671. of the deity to the idol,

  672. to the image,

  673. at which point the God

  674. became accessible to them

  675. and controllable.

  676. Idolatry is an attempt

  677. to tame God

  678. and to confine God.

  679. Images we make

  680. are deaf and dumb.

  681. They cannot speak.

  682. But as we observed

  683. last week from verse 1,

  684. a distinguishing attribute

  685. of the true God

  686. in contrast with

  687. the false gods of the world

  688. is that God speaks.

  689. It's precisely the point

  690. of Deuteronomy 4.12.

  691. It says,

  692. Then the Lord spoke to you

  693. out of the midst of the fire.

  694. You heard the sound of words

  695. but saw no form.

  696. There was only a voice.

  697. God has chosen

  698. to reveal himself

  699. not through a picture,

  700. not through a form,

  701. but through his word.

  702. A carved idol

  703. or a painted image of God's

  704. can be carried

  705. or carried around

  706. and put to the service

  707. of our own agendas.

  708. If you walk into

  709. Asian restaurants

  710. scattered throughout the city,

  711. you will find that many of them

  712. have mini altars

  713. right at the entrance

  714. with little images

  715. and sometimes

  716. with incense burning

  717. as sacrifices to them.

  718. They believe that these gods

  719. will bring many people

  720. to their businesses

  721. and prosper them.

  722. That's the appeal

  723. of these idols.

  724. They are tangible

  725. and therefore

  726. they seem real to people.

  727. They are static.

  728. They are fixed

  729. in time and space.

  730. And because these idols

  731. don't speak to us,

  732. we're not accountable to them.

  733. We don't have to do

  734. anything they say.

  735. Instead,

  736. we can take them around

  737. and set them up

  738. to endorse anything

  739. that we want them to bless.

  740. We can wear them

  741. around our necks

  742. as good luck charms.

  743. We can put them

  744. on our rear view mirrors.

  745. We can put words

  746. into the mouths

  747. of these idols

  748. because they cannot speak.

  749. In contrast,

  750. the Lord is a person

  751. and not an object.

  752. So he speaks to us

  753. unlike the idols

  754. of this world

  755. and he can interrupt

  756. our lives

  757. and he can intervene

  758. in our lives

  759. by speaking to us.

  760. You get to know things

  761. by looking at them

  762. and using them.

  763. You get to know a person

  764. by listening

  765. to what they say.

  766. Images are not

  767. to be used

  768. in the worship of the Lord

  769. because to do so

  770. would violate

  771. God's sovereignty

  772. and freedom.

  773. You cannot

  774. domesticate God.

  775. A domesticated God

  776. is no God at all.

  777. It's important to note

  778. that we can commit

  779. idolatry

  780. even with good images.

  781. For example,

  782. an image of a dove

  783. to represent

  784. the Holy Spirit

  785. or even a cross

  786. to represent

  787. Jesus or crucifix.

  788. If we treat them

  789. not as reminders

  790. of God

  791. but as representations

  792. of God.

  793. If we start to

  794. attach spiritual significance

  795. and weight to them

  796. as if God

  797. were present in them.

  798. If we hang them

  799. on our view of the mirrors

  800. and thinking that

  801. they'll protect us

  802. from accidents

  803. or put them over our beds

  804. thinking that they would

  805. keep us from nightmares

  806. then we're reducing

  807. God to an image

  808. in violation

  809. of the second commandment.

  810. I still remember

  811. several years ago

  812. when we were still

  813. meeting at Kennedy Longfellow

  814. School

  815. during the Lord's Supper

  816. a guest in our church

  817. walked up

  818. to take communion

  819. and then he pulled out

  820. this huge cross necklace

  821. and then he handed it to me

  822. and he said

  823. hey, can you bless this for me?

  824. And that's

  825. it was really awkward

  826. because it was in the middle

  827. of communion

  828. but it also made me

  829. really uncomfortable

  830. because it seemed to me

  831. like he was treating

  832. that pendant

  833. like an amulet

  834. like a good luck charm.

  835. Let me get this thing

  836. blessed by a pastor

  837. now I can carry it around

  838. and it's going to bring me

  839. good luck

  840. it's going to bring

  841. blessings to my life.

  842. And so I told them

  843. hey, I will not bless

  844. your necklace

  845. but I will bless you

  846. and I just

  847. blessed them

  848. personally.

  849. So

  850. there are many ways

  851. we can

  852. and another example

  853. of this

  854. I can't help but think

  855. of the

  856. adoration of the

  857. or veneration of the saints

  858. in some of the denominations.

  859. I think that falls

  860. under the prohibition

  861. of the second commandment.

  862. The catechism

  863. of the Catholic Church

  864. cites Basil

  865. and says

  866. the honor rendered

  867. to an image

  868. passes to its prototype

  869. and whoever

  870. venerates an image

  871. venerates the person

  872. portrayed in it.

  873. It further distinguishes

  874. that the honor

  875. paid to sacred images

  876. is a respectful

  877. veneration

  878. not the adoration

  879. due to God

  880. alone.

  881. But I think

  882. that's splitting hairs.

  883. I think that's

  884. a distinction

  885. without a difference.

  886. You can say

  887. that it's veneration

  888. and not worship

  889. or adoration

  890. all you want

  891. but when you

  892. prostrate yourself

  893. before icons

  894. of saints

  895. when you

  896. pray to these

  897. images as if

  898. they are the

  899. ears of God

  900. when you make

  901. pilgrimages

  902. to admire

  903. and seek healing

  904. from the relics

  905. of saints

  906. like the

  907. Shroud of Turin

  908. or the bones

  909. of deceased

  910. godly men

  911. and women

  912. from the past

  913. when you

  914. parade the

  915. icons of saints

  916. throughout town

  917. for people

  918. to venerate

  919. as they do

  920. every year

  921. in East Cambridge

  922. at the feast

  923. of Saint

  924. Cosmes

  925. and Damien

  926. in Cambridge

  927. how is that

  928. not a violation

  929. of verse 5

  930. you shall not

  931. bow down

  932. to them

  933. or serve them

  934. in fact

  935. the technical

  936. Greek word

  937. that Catholics

  938. used to refer

  939. to the veneration

  940. of the saints

  941. is douleia

  942. which means

  943. service

  944. and this verse

  945. tells us

  946. not to serve

  947. the images

  948. Catholic

  949. apologists

  950. Pope Gregory

  951. for example

  952. who argued

  953. for the preservation

  954. of images

  955. in church buildings

  956. even when people

  957. were appropriately

  958. worshipping them

  959. said this

  960. those who cannot

  961. read may by

  962. looking at the

  963. walls

  964. read what they

  965. cannot read

  966. in books

  967. this is how

  968. church icons

  969. came to be known

  970. as quote

  971. books of the

  972. laity

  973. because much

  974. of the lady

  975. many of the

  976. lady were

  977. illiterate

  978. at the time

  979. however

  980. that's misguided

  981. because

  982. God did not

  983. reveal himself

  984. to his people

  985. in pictures

  986. but in words

  987. the Lord

  988. spoke to you

  989. out of the

  990. midst of the

  991. fire

  992. you heard

  993. the sound

  994. of words

  995. but saw

  996. no form

  997. there was

  998. only a voice

  999. and I don't

  1000. think it's

  1001. an accident

  1002. that God

  1003. reveals himself

  1004. to his people

  1005. in the midst

  1006. of fire

  1007. and clouds

  1008. of glory

  1009. because these

  1010. things smoke

  1011. cloud and fire

  1012. they reveal

  1013. something about

  1014. God

  1015. but they also

  1016. appropriately

  1017. veil God

  1018. Deuteronomy

  1019. 5.22

  1020. says these

  1021. words

  1022. the Lord

  1023. God

  1024. spoke to

  1025. you

  1026. to your

  1027. assembly

  1028. at the

  1029. mountain

  1030. out of the

  1031. midst

  1032. of the

  1033. fire

  1034. the cloud

  1035. and the

  1036. thick

  1037. darkness

  1038. with a loud

  1039. voice

  1040. and he added

  1041. no more

  1042. this veiling

  1043. of God

  1044. suggests to us

  1045. that while

  1046. no creature

  1047. is hidden

  1048. from God's

  1049. all-knowing

  1050. eye

  1051. no creature

  1052. is hidden

  1053. from God's

  1054. sight

  1055. all are

  1056. naked

  1057. and exposed

  1058. before the

  1059. eyes of

  1060. God

  1061. however

  1062. God

  1063. himself

  1064. does not

  1065. lay naked

  1066. in that

  1067. way

  1068. before all

  1069. men

  1070. we cannot

  1071. plumb the

  1072. depth of

  1073. God's

  1074. infinite

  1075. glory

  1076. and so

  1077. we are to

  1078. teach people

  1079. to read

  1080. we are to

  1081. teach people

  1082. the word

  1083. that's how

  1084. we are to

  1085. know

  1086. God

  1087. so that's

  1088. the command

  1089. and what's

  1090. the motivation

  1091. verses 5

  1092. to 6

  1093. it's the

  1094. jealousy

  1095. of God

  1096. you shall

  1097. not bow

  1098. down to

  1099. them

  1100. or to

  1101. worship

  1102. or serve

  1103. them

  1104. for I

  1105. the Lord

  1106. your God

  1107. am a

  1108. jealous

  1109. God

  1110. might be

  1111. shocking

  1112. to some

  1113. of you

  1114. that God

  1115. is described

  1116. here as

  1117. jealous

  1118. the Hebrew

  1119. word behind

  1120. it is a

  1121. word that

  1122. combines

  1123. zeal or

  1124. passion

  1125. with jealousy

  1126. which is

  1127. typical of

  1128. a lover

  1129. numbers 5

  1130. 14

  1131. use that

  1132. same word

  1133. to describe

  1134. a husband

  1135. who suspects

  1136. that his

  1137. wife has

  1138. been unfaithful

  1139. to him

  1140. the jealousy

  1141. that comes

  1142. over and

  1143. it's the

  1144. same word

  1145. that is

  1146. used

  1147. here

  1148. if we

  1149. we

  1150. commonly in

  1151. English

  1152. use the

  1153. word jealousy

  1154. and envy

  1155. interchangeably

  1156. but if we

  1157. make a

  1158. technical

  1159. distinction

  1160. jealousy

  1161. is what

  1162. we feel

  1163. for what

  1164. is rightly

  1165. ours

  1166. so when

  1167. your spouse

  1168. belongs to

  1169. you

  1170. is unfaithful

  1171. it is right

  1172. for you to

  1173. feel jealous

  1174. in that

  1175. situation

  1176. because he

  1177. or she

  1178. rightly

  1179. belongs

  1180. to you

  1181. envy

  1182. is when

  1183. you

  1184. desire

  1185. something

  1186. that doesn't

  1187. belong

  1188. to you

  1189. that's

  1190. when you

  1191. covet

  1192. that's

  1193. when you

  1194. desire

  1195. something

  1196. that is

  1197. someone

  1198. else's

  1199. that's

  1200. envy

  1201. so

  1202. God

  1203. is never

  1204. jealous

  1205. of

  1206. other

  1207. people

  1208. what

  1209. they

  1210. have

  1211. but he

  1212. is

  1213. jealous

  1214. for

  1215. his

  1216. people

  1217. he

  1218. has

  1219. no

  1220. envy

  1221. but he

  1222. has

  1223. jealousy

  1224. for his

  1225. people

  1226. because

  1227. he

  1228. has

  1229. redeemed

  1230. them

  1231. he has

  1232. paid

  1233. the cost

  1234. to make

  1235. them

  1236. his own

  1237. and he

  1238. loves

  1239. them

  1240. and he

  1241. is devoted

  1242. to them

  1243. and so

  1244. he wants

  1245. to keep

  1246. them

  1247. for himself

  1248. to be

  1249. exclusively

  1250. devoted

  1251. to him

  1252. and it's

  1253. intense

  1254. love of

  1255. God

  1256. and jealousy

  1257. of God

  1258. that drives

  1259. this

  1260. God to

  1261. punish

  1262. infidelity

  1263. it says

  1264. in verses

  1265. five to

  1266. six

  1267. for I

  1268. the Lord

  1269. your God

  1270. am a

  1271. jealous

  1272. God

  1273. visiting

  1274. the

  1275. iniquity

  1276. of the

  1277. fathers

  1278. and the

  1279. children

  1280. to the

  1281. third

  1282. and fourth

  1283. generation

  1284. of those

  1285. who hate

  1286. me

  1287. but showing

  1288. steadfast

  1289. love

  1290. to the

  1291. thousands

  1292. of those

  1293. who love

  1294. me

  1295. and keep

  1296. my

  1297. commandments

  1298. these

  1299. verses

  1300. have

  1301. troubled

  1302. people

  1303. throughout

  1304. the

  1305. ages

  1306. because

  1307. they

  1308. appear

  1309. to

  1310. suggest

  1311. that

  1312. God

  1313. imputes

  1314. the

  1315. sins

  1316. of

  1317. guilty

  1318. fathers

  1319. on

  1320. innocent

  1321. children

  1322. and punishes

  1323. them

  1324. for it

  1325. but that's

  1326. not the

  1327. case

  1328. for a number

  1329. of reasons

  1330. first

  1331. it doesn't

  1332. say

  1333. anywhere

  1334. that these

  1335. children

  1336. are

  1337. innocent

  1338. the

  1339. Lord

  1340. speaks

  1341. of the

  1342. third

  1343. and

  1344. fourth

  1345. generation

  1346. of those

  1347. who

  1348. hate

  1349. me

  1350. when

  1351. scriptures

  1352. speak

  1353. of the

  1354. iniquity

  1355. of the

  1356. fathers

  1357. it usually

  1358. couples

  1359. it with

  1360. the iniquity

  1361. of the

  1362. sons

  1363. as well

  1364. and

  1365. that's

  1366. because

  1367. parents

  1368. and

  1369. children

  1370. are

  1371. organically

  1372. connected

  1373. in such

  1374. a way

  1375. that

  1376. sons

  1377. fill up

  1378. the

  1379. sins

  1380. of

  1381. their

  1382. fathers

  1383. scriptures

  1384. are

  1385. very

  1386. clear

  1387. in other

  1388. places

  1389. that

  1390. God

  1391. does

  1392. not

  1393. punish

  1394. innocent

  1395. children

  1396. for the

  1397. sins

  1398. of

  1399. their

  1400. parents

  1401. for example

  1402. Deuteronomy

  1403. 24 16

  1404. his father

  1405. shall not

  1406. be put

  1407. to death

  1408. because

  1409. of their

  1410. children

  1411. nor

  1412. shall

  1413. children

  1414. be put

  1415. to

  1416. death

  1417. because

  1418. of

  1419. their

  1420. fathers

  1421. each

  1422. one

  1423. shall

  1424. be

  1425. put

  1426. to

  1427. death

  1428. for

  1429. his

  1430. own

  1431. sin

  1432. in

  1433. Ezekiel

  1434. 18 20

  1435. the soul

  1436. who sins

  1437. shall die

  1438. the son

  1439. shall not

  1440. suffer for

  1441. the iniquity

  1442. of the

  1443. father

  1444. nor the

  1445. father

  1446. suffer for

  1447. the

  1448. iniquity

  1449. of the

  1450. son

  1451. so the

  1452. punished

  1453. children

  1454. in this

  1455. case

  1456. are not

  1457. innocent

  1458. second

  1459. the

  1460. expression

  1461. the third

  1462. and fourth

  1463. generation

  1464. refers to

  1465. the maximum

  1466. number

  1467. of generations

  1468. that may

  1469. be alive

  1470. at one

  1471. time

  1472. for example

  1473. God's

  1474. blessing

  1475. on

  1476. Joseph

  1477. is seen

  1478. in the

  1479. fact

  1480. that in

  1481. Genesis 50

    Genesis 50:23

  1482. verse 23

  1483. Joseph saw

  1484. Ephraim's

  1485. children

  1486. of the

  1487. third

  1488. generation

  1489. so to

  1490. Joseph's

  1491. fourth

  1492. generation

  1493. that would

  1494. be his

  1495. down to

  1496. his

  1497. great

  1498. grandson

  1499. similarly

  1500. Job

  1501. 42 16

  1502. tells us

  1503. that Job

  1504. was blessed

  1505. by God

  1506. that he

  1507. lived 140

  1508. years

  1509. and saw

  1510. his sons

  1511. and his

  1512. sons

  1513. sons

  1514. four

  1515. generations

  1516. so seeing

  1517. the welfare

  1518. of your

  1519. progeny

  1520. down to

  1521. the fourth

  1522. generation

  1523. is a sign

  1524. of God's

  1525. great

  1526. blessing

  1527. the welfare

  1528. of children

  1529. and grandchildren

  1530. were

  1531. particularly

  1532. important

  1533. back in

  1534. the day

  1535. because

  1536. children

  1537. were seen

  1538. in those

  1539. times

  1540. not as

  1541. economic

  1542. liabilities

  1543. but as

  1544. economic

  1545. assets

  1546. because

  1547. they're the

  1548. ones that

  1549. would help

  1550. you to

  1551. farm

  1552. they're the

  1553. ones who

  1554. would take

  1555. care of

  1556. you when

  1557. you're old

  1558. and unable

  1559. to do

  1560. manual

  1561. labor

  1562. and so

  1563. when

  1564. disaster

  1565. befalls

  1566. your sons

  1567. it's also

  1568. punishment

  1569. of the

  1570. father

  1571. so wicked

  1572. father

  1573. in seeing

  1574. the disaster

  1575. that comes

  1576. upon his

  1577. sons

  1578. ends his

  1579. life in

  1580. despair

  1581. realizing

  1582. that he

  1583. has even

  1584. brought

  1585. his

  1586. progeny

  1587. to ruin

  1588. it is

  1589. the mere

  1590. opposite

  1591. of what

  1592. Joseph and

  1593. Job

  1594. experienced

  1595. as

  1596. Jewish

  1597. scholar

  1598. Jeffrey

  1599. Teague

  1600. notes

  1601. quote

  1602. this

  1603. indicates

  1604. that the

  1605. suffering

  1606. of the

  1607. descendants

  1608. is

  1609. intended

  1610. as a

  1611. deterrent

  1612. to

  1613. and punishment

  1614. of their

  1615. ancestors

  1616. not a

  1617. transfer of

  1618. guilt

  1619. to the

  1620. descendants

  1621. in their

  1622. own

  1623. right

  1624. third

  1625. though out

  1626. of the

  1627. intensity

  1628. of his

  1629. love

  1630. and jealousy

  1631. the unfaithful

  1632. fathers

  1633. see the

  1634. punishment

  1635. for their

  1636. own sins

  1637. even in the

  1638. welfare of

  1639. their children

  1640. to the

  1641. third and

  1642. fourth

  1643. generation

  1644. this is

  1645. contrasted

  1646. with the

  1647. loyal love

  1648. that God

  1649. shows

  1650. to those

  1651. who keep

  1652. his

  1653. commandments

  1654. he says

  1655. showing

  1656. he shows

  1657. steadfast

  1658. love

  1659. to

  1660. thousands

  1661. of those

  1662. who love

  1663. me and

  1664. keep my

  1665. commandments

  1666. because of

  1667. the parallel

  1668. between those

  1669. verses

  1670. I interpret

  1671. thousands

  1672. to mean

  1673. thousands

  1674. of

  1675. generations

  1676. that's

  1677. why it

  1678. says in

  1679. the footnote

  1680. to the

  1681. ESV

  1682. that's how

  1683. the NIV

  1684. and CSB

  1685. translate it

  1686. so thousands

  1687. of generations

  1688. God will

  1689. remember your

  1690. iniquity to

  1691. the third

  1692. and fourth

  1693. generation

  1694. if you are

  1695. unfaithful to

  1696. him you break

  1697. his covenant

  1698. with him

  1699. but he will

  1700. remember your

  1701. love to him

  1702. for a thousand

  1703. generations

  1704. remember that

  1705. the third

  1706. and fourth

  1707. generations

  1708. represent the

  1709. maximum number

  1710. of generations

  1711. that a person

  1712. might live to

  1713. see so it's

  1714. really still

  1715. within your

  1716. own

  1717. lifetime

  1718. it is

  1719. one

  1720. lifetime

  1721. that God

  1722. remembers

  1723. and punishes

  1724. your sin

  1725. but he will

  1726. remember

  1727. long after you

  1728. are dead

  1729. and gone

  1730. your faithfulness

  1731. your love

  1732. toward him

  1733. for a thousand

  1734. generations

  1735. we see an

  1736. example of this

  1737. in second

  1738. Kings 20

  1739. when the nation

  1740. of Judah

  1741. is besieged

  1742. by the nation

  1743. of Assyria

  1744. because of

  1745. their sin

  1746. and they

  1747. deserved

  1748. punishment

  1749. they deserved

  1750. exile

  1751. but the Lord

  1752. says to

  1753. King Hezekiah

  1754. who is the

  1755. great

  1756. great

  1757. great

  1758. great

  1759. great

  1760. great

  1761. great

  1762. great

  1763. great

  1764. great

  1765. great

  1766. grandson

  1767. of David

  1768. this is much

  1769. more than

  1770. third and fourth

  1771. generation

  1772. this is what he

  1773. says to him

  1774. I will deliver

  1775. you and this

  1776. city out of

  1777. the hand

  1778. of the king

  1779. of Assyria

  1780. and I will

  1781. defend this

  1782. city for my

  1783. own sake

  1784. and for

  1785. my servant

  1786. David's sake

  1787. even though

  1788. David unfaithful

  1789. for so many

  1790. generations

  1791. God says

  1792. I still

  1793. remember

  1794. David

  1795. and so

  1796. I will

  1797. show you

  1798. kindness

  1799. I will

  1800. show you

  1801. mercy

  1802. God's

  1803. memory

  1804. of our

  1805. faithfulness

  1806. far outlasts

  1807. his memory

  1808. of our

  1809. unfaithfulness

  1810. and that's

  1811. what this

  1812. passage is

  1813. teaching us

  1814. it's a

  1815. testament

  1816. not of

  1817. God's

  1818. vengefulness

  1819. but of

  1820. his mercy

  1821. and grace

  1822. and the

  1823. ultimate

  1824. example of

  1825. God showing

  1826. steadfast love

  1827. to a thousand

  1828. generations

  1829. is seen

  1830. in Jesus

  1831. because in

  1832. 2 Samuel 7

  1833. 16

  1834. God had

  1835. promised

  1836. the king

  1837. David

  1838. that he

  1839. will rule

  1840. his house

  1841. will rule

  1842. forever

  1843. but the

  1844. dynasty

  1845. humanly speaking

  1846. ended

  1847. the nation

  1848. of Israel

  1849. and Judah

  1850. were exiled

  1851. to foreign

  1852. countries

  1853. they were not

  1854. in the promised

  1855. land anymore

  1856. and yet

  1857. after all

  1858. those years

  1859. after hundreds

  1860. of years

  1861. after all

  1862. those generations

  1863. God brings

  1864. Jesus

  1865. from the line

  1866. of David

  1867. to be the

  1868. messianic king

  1869. who reigns

  1870. and fulfills

  1871. that promise

  1872. to David

  1873. he remembers

  1874. his faithfulness

  1875. to a thousand

  1876. generations

  1877. and that brings

  1878. me to my

  1879. final point

  1880. the fulfillment

  1881. of this

  1882. commandment

  1883. in the image

  1884. of God

  1885. Jesus fulfills

  1886. the second

  1887. commandment

  1888. and brings it

  1889. to its intended

  1890. goal

  1891. the reason why

  1892. God forbade

  1893. the creation

  1894. of images

  1895. for worship

  1896. was because

  1897. he intended

  1898. from the beginning

  1899. to send

  1900. Jesus

  1901. the son of

  1902. God

  1903. and Jesus

  1904. is his

  1905. ultimate image

  1906. and we

  1907. ought to

  1908. worship

  1909. him

  1910. Colossians

  1911. 3 15

  1912. tells us

  1913. that Jesus

  1914. is the

  1915. image

  1916. of the

  1917. invisible

  1918. God

  1919. John 1 14

  1920. says that

  1921. the word

  1922. of God

  1923. became

  1924. flesh

  1925. and dwelt

  1926. among us

  1927. that's Jesus

  1928. Jesus

  1929. is the

  1930. one

  1931. divinely

  1932. sanctioned

  1933. image

  1934. of the

  1935. invisible

  1936. God

  1937. so if

  1938. you want

  1939. to know

  1940. what God

  1941. is like

  1942. you don't

  1943. have to

  1944. look to

  1945. other things

  1946. instead of

  1947. paintings

  1948. and sculptures

  1949. the Lord

  1950. gives us

  1951. a living

  1952. and breathing

  1953. person

  1954. in

  1955. Jesus

  1956. Christ

  1957. so if

  1958. you want

  1959. to know

  1960. what God

  1961. is like

  1962. look to

  1963. Jesus

  1964. his life

  1965. revealed

  1966. in his

  1967. word

  1968. look at

  1969. his

  1970. compassion

  1971. and mercy

  1972. towards

  1973. sinners

  1974. in his

  1975. life

  1976. look at

  1977. the love

  1978. that Jesus

  1979. displays

  1980. when he

  1981. lays down

  1982. his life

  1983. for us

  1984. on the

  1985. cross

  1986. and dies

  1987. for our

  1988. sins

  1989. so that

  1990. we

  1991. might

  1992. live

  1993. look at

  1994. his

  1995. resurrection

  1996. how he

  1997. defeats

  1998. sin

  1999. and death

  2000. and the

  2001. demons

  2002. and is

  2003. raised

  2004. over

  2005. over it

  2006. all

  2007. and is

  2008. ascended

  2009. to the

  2010. heavens

  2011. at the

  2012. right

  2013. hand

  2014. of the

  2015. father

  2016. then that

  2017. you can

  2018. see

  2019. God's

  2020. authority

  2021. and God's

  2022. power

  2023. and that's

  2024. why when

  2025. Philip

  2026. asked

  2027. Jesus

  2028. in John

  2029. 14

  2030. show us

  2031. the

  2032. father

  2033. Jesus

  2034. says

  2035. how can

  2036. you

  2037. ask me

  2038. to show

  2039. you

  2040. the

  2041. father

  2042. if you

  2043. have

  2044. seen

  2045. me

  2046. you

  2047. have

  2048. seen

  2049. the

  2050. father

  2051. because

  2052. Jesus

  2053. is the

  2054. image of

  2055. the

  2056. invisible

  2057. that

  2058. raises

  2059. the

  2060. question

  2061. however

  2062. is it

  2063. okay

  2064. then for

  2065. us to

  2066. create

  2067. artistic

  2068. depictions

  2069. of

  2070. Jesus

  2071. since

  2072. he

  2073. was

  2074. incarnated

  2075. and he

  2076. took on

  2077. human

  2078. flesh

  2079. he did

  2080. have a

  2081. physical

  2082. appearance

  2083. so what

  2084. about

  2085. the

  2086. Christ

  2087. the

  2088. Redeemer

  2089. statue

  2090. in Rio

  2091. de Janeiro

  2092. what about

  2093. the

  2094. Jesus

  2095. film

  2096. or the

  2097. chosen

  2098. series

  2099. because

  2100. of the

  2101. incarnation

  2102. I think

  2103. it is

  2104. permissible

  2105. to create

  2106. artistic

  2107. and dramatic

  2108. representations

  2109. of

  2110. Jesus

  2111. however

  2112. I still

  2113. don't

  2114. think

  2115. that we

  2116. should

  2117. create

  2118. representations

  2119. of

  2120. Jesus

  2121. to bow

  2122. down

  2123. to them

  2124. and to

  2125. serve

  2126. them

  2127. because

  2128. God

  2129. gave us

  2130. the

  2131. living

  2132. person

  2133. of

  2134. Jesus

  2135. as

  2136. his

  2137. image

  2138. not

  2139. pictures

  2140. of

  2141. him

  2142. I don't

  2143. think

  2144. it is

  2145. a

  2146. coincidence

  2147. that

  2148. no

  2149. portrait

  2150. of

  2151. Jesus

  2152. has

  2153. survived

  2154. to

  2155. this

  2156. day

  2157. there is

  2158. nothing

  2159. from

  2160. the

  2161. first

  2162. century

  2163. handed

  2164. down

  2165. to

  2166. us

  2167. New

  2168. Testament

  2169. never

  2170. describes

  2171. the

  2172. physical

  2173. appearance

  2174. of

  2175. Jesus

  2176. except

  2177. taken

  2178. from

  2179. Isaiah

  2180. 53

  2181. no

  2182. one

  2183. knows

  2184. exactly

  2185. what

  2186. Jesus

  2187. looked

  2188. like

  2189. but

  2190. Jesus

  2191. passed

  2192. down

  2193. his

  2194. word

  2195. Jesus

  2196. promised

  2197. that

  2198. when

  2199. the

  2200. spirit

  2201. of

  2202. God

  2203. comes

  2204. after

  2205. his

  2206. ascension

  2207. that

  2208. he

  2209. will

  2210. speak

  2211. and

  2212. bring

  2213. to

  2214. remember

  2215. all

  2216. that

  2217. he

  2218. has

  2219. said

  2220. and

  2221. taught

  2222. us

  2223. the

  2224. spirit

  2225. speaks

  2226. the

  2227. words

  2228. of

  2229. Jesus

  2230. he

  2231. does

  2232. not

  2233. produce

  2234. pictures

  2235. of

  2236. Jesus

  2237. in

  2238. our

  2239. minds

  2240. I

  2241. think

  2242. theologian

  2243. Edmund

  2244. Clowney

  2245. gets

  2246. to the

  2247. right

  2248. heart

  2249. of

  2250. this

  2251. dilemma

  2252. he

  2253. says

  2254. in

  2255. our

  2256. desire

  2257. not

  2258. to

  2259. profane

  2260. Christ

  2261. but

  2262. worshiping

  2263. an

  2264. image

  2265. of

  2266. him

  2267. we

  2268. must

  2269. also

  2270. be

  2271. cautious

  2272. that

  2273. we

  2274. don't

  2275. spiritualize

  2276. him

  2277. into

  2278. thin

  2279. air

  2280. if

  2281. we

  2282. show

  2283. no

  2284. pictures

  2285. of

  2286. Jesus

  2287. everyday

  2288. life

  2289. to

  2290. our

  2291. children

  2292. how

  2293. will

  2294. they

  2295. know

  2296. his

  2297. reality

  2298. let

  2299. me

  2300. offer

  2301. a

  2302. principle

  2303. that

  2304. may

  2305. help

  2306. us

  2307. determine

  2308. what

  2309. is

  2310. a

  2311. good

  2312. use

  2313. of

  2314. image

  2315. when

  2316. it

  2317. comes

  2318. to

  2319. portraying

  2320. Jesus

  2321. I

  2322. suggest

  2323. that

  2324. portraits

  2325. of

  2326. Jesus

  2327. are

  2328. the

  2329. problem

  2330. many

  2331. representations

  2332. show

  2333. the

  2334. reality

  2335. of

  2336. Jesus

  2337. without

  2338. offering

  2339. a

  2340. portrait

  2341. which

  2342. in

  2343. its

  2344. very

  2345. nature

  2346. invites

  2347. us

  2348. to

  2349. worship

  2350. so

  2351. he's

  2352. saying

  2353. don't

  2354. produce

  2355. portraits

  2356. that

  2357. are

  2358. meant

  2359. to

  2360. appear

  2361. like

  2362. exact

  2363. representations

  2364. of

  2365. Jesus

  2366. here

  2367. is

  2368. Jesus

  2369. this

  2370. is

  2371. how

  2372. you

  2373. should

  2374. get

  2375. to

  2376. know

  2377. him

  2378. a

  2379. helpful

  2380. example

  2381. of

  2382. this

  2383. is

  2384. the

  2385. 20th

  2386. century

  2387. portrait

  2388. of

  2389. Jesus

  2390. entitled

  2391. The Head

  2392. of

  2393. Christ

  2394. by

  2395. American

  2396. artist

  2397. Warner

  2398. Salmon

  2399. have

  2400. you

  2401. guys

  2402. seen

  2403. this

  2404. if

  2405. you

  2406. google

  2407. it

  2408. I

  2409. bet

  2410. you'll

  2411. come

  2412. up

  2413. and

  2414. you'll

  2415. be

  2416. oh

  2417. yes

  2418. I

  2419. know

  2420. exactly

  2421. I've

  2422. seen

  2423. this

  2424. picture

  2425. before

  2426. it's

  2427. probably

  2428. the

  2429. artistic

  2430. work

  2431. that

  2432. has

  2433. enjoyed

  2434. the

  2435. greatest

  2436. mass

  2437. appeal

  2438. in

  2439. the

  2440. modern

  2441. age

  2442. by

  2443. the

  2444. end

  2445. of

  2446. the

  2447. 20th

  2448. century

  2449. it

  2450. had

  2451. already

  2452. been

  2453. reproduced

  2454. over

  2455. half

  2456. a

  2457. billion

  2458. times

  2459. worldwide

  2460. you find

  2461. as a

  2462. kid

  2463. that's

  2464. what

  2465. I

  2466. grew

  2467. up

  2468. seeing

  2469. so

  2470. whenever

  2471. I

  2472. thought

  2473. of

  2474. Jesus

  2475. I

  2476. imagined

  2477. that

  2478. picture

  2479. and

  2480. I

  2481. think

  2482. that's

  2483. inappropriate

  2484. I

  2485. don't

  2486. think

  2487. that's

  2488. what

  2489. that's

  2490. I

  2491. think

  2492. that's

  2493. the

  2494. intention

  2495. that's

  2496. the way

  2497. images

  2498. should

  2499. function

  2500. in our

  2501. in our

  2502. worship

  2503. in our

  2504. thinking

  2505. about

  2506. God

  2507. and

  2508. to

  2509. give

  2510. an

  2511. example

  2512. that

  2513. some

  2514. people

  2515. have

  2516. you know

  2517. attributed

  2518. miracles

  2519. to this

  2520. painting

  2521. by

  2522. Salmon

  2523. and

  2524. they

  2525. have

  2526. made

  2527. pilgrimages

  2528. to

  2529. it

  2530. in

  2531. Coptic

  2532. Orthodox

  2533. Church

  2534. in

  2535. Houston

  2536. where

  2537. they

  2538. claim

  2539. that

  2540. this

  2541. picture

  2542. the

  2543. portrait

  2544. of

  2545. Salmon

  2546. cured

  2547. a

  2548. boy

  2549. with

  2550. leukemia

  2551. I

  2552. don't

  2553. think

  2554. this

  2555. is

  2556. any

  2557. different

  2558. from

  2559. the

  2560. cult

  2561. of

  2562. saints

  2563. venerating

  2564. images

  2565. of

  2566. Christians

  2567. from

  2568. past

  2569. ages

  2570. while

  2571. we

  2572. can

  2573. honor

  2574. Christ

  2575. and

  2576. represent

  2577. him

  2578. in

  2579. art

  2580. if

  2581. we

  2582. cross

  2583. over

  2584. to

  2585. saying

  2586. that

  2587. that

  2588. piece

  2589. of

  2590. art

  2591. is

  2592. who

  2593. Christ

  2594. is

  2595. if

  2596. we

  2597. start

  2598. paying

  2599. homage

  2600. to

  2601. it

  2602. and

  2603. venerating

  2604. it

  2605. and

  2606. attributing

  2607. supernatural

  2608. powers

  2609. to

  2610. it

  2611. I

  2612. think

  2613. we

  2614. are

  2615. violating

  2616. the

  2617. second

  2618. commandment

  2619. as it

  2620. applies

  2621. to

  2622. us

  2623. as

  2624. Christians

  2625. God

  2626. does

  2627. not

  2628. intend

  2629. for

  2630. us

  2631. to

  2632. create

  2633. images

  2634. of

  2635. him

  2636. or

  2637. his

  2638. son

  2639. he

  2640. intends

  2641. for

  2642. us

  2643. to

  2644. be

  2645. his

  2646. images

  2647. as

  2648. we

  2649. are

  2650. sanctified

  2651. and

  2652. restored

  2653. more

  2654. and

  2655. more

  2656. to

  2657. the

  2658. likeness

  2659. of

  2660. Christ

  2661. remember

  2662. God

  2663. created

  2664. us

  2665. in

  2666. his

  2667. image

  2668. even

  2669. though

  2670. because

  2671. of

  2672. our

  2673. sin

  2674. the

  2675. image

  2676. of

  2677. God

  2678. in

  2679. us

  2680. is

  2681. defaced

  2682. it

  2683. is

  2684. still

  2685. there

  2686. and

  2687. by

  2688. Christ

  2689. and

  2690. by

  2691. the

  2692. Holy

  2693. Spirit

  2694. we

  2695. are

  2696. being

  2697. restored

  2698. more

  2699. and

  2700. more

  2701. to

  2702. the

  2703. fullness

  2704. of

  2705. God's

  2706. image

  2707. in

  2708. Christ

  2709. that's

  2710. why

  2711. Romans

  2712. 8

  2713. 29

  2714. says

  2715. this

  2716. for

  2717. those

  2718. whom

  2719. he

  2720. foreknew

  2721. he

  2722. also

  2723. predestined

  2724. to

  2725. be

  2726. conformed

  2727. to

  2728. the

  2729. image

  2730. of

  2731. his

  2732. son

  2733. 2nd

  2734. Corinthians

  2735. 3

  2736. 7

  2737. and

  2738. 18

  2739. now

  2740. the

  2741. Lord

  2742. beholding

  2743. the

  2744. glory

  2745. of

  2746. the

  2747. Lord

  2748. are

  2749. being

  2750. transformed

  2751. into

  2752. the

  2753. same

  2754. image

  2755. from

  2756. one

  2757. degree

  2758. of

  2759. glory

  2760. to

  2761. another

  2762. for

  2763. this

  2764. comes

  2765. from

  2766. the

  2767. Lord

  2768. who

  2769. is

  2770. the

  2771. Spirit

  2772. so

  2773. let's

  2774. not

  2775. look

  2776. around

  2777. at

  2778. other

  2779. images

  2780. there's

  2781. now

  2782. no

  2783. longer

  2784. a

  2785. veil

  2786. that

  2787. divides

  2788. us

  2789. and

  2790. God

  2791. the

  2792. veil

  2793. has

  2794. been

  2795. removed

  2796. and

  2797. we

  2798. see

  2799. the

  2800. fullness

  2801. of

  2802. God

  2803. in

  2804. Jesus

  2805. Christ

  2806. and

  2807. so

  2808. we

  2809. can

  2810. behold

  2811. him

  2812. and

  2813. let's

  2814. behold

  2815. him

  2816. in

  2817. his

  2818. word

  2819. and

  2820. as

  2821. we

  2822. behold

  2823. him

  2824. we'll

  2825. be

  2826. transformed

  2827. more

  2828. and

  2829. more

  2830. to

  2831. the

  2832. glory

  2833. of

  2834. Christ

  2835. to

  2836. the

  2837. likeness

  2838. of

  2839. Christ

  2840. and

  2841. that

  2842. is

  2843. our

  2844. Christian

  2845. calling

  2846. that's

  2847. why

  2848. we

  2849. are

  2850. here

  2851. to

  2852. belong

  2853. to

  2854. Jesus

  2855. to

  2856. love

  2857. Jesus

  2858. become

  2859. like

  2860. Jesus

  2861. so

  2862. let's

  2863. pray

  2864. for

  2865. that

  2866. together

  2867. heavenly

  2868. father

  2869. that is

  2870. what

  2871. we

  2872. long

  2873. for

  2874. we

  2875. seek

  2876. no

  2877. idols

  2878. because

  2879. Christ

  2880. is

  2881. sufficient

  2882. for

  2883. us

  2884. Lord

  2885. help

  2886. us

  2887. to

  2888. worship

  2889. him

  2890. rightly

  2891. and

  2892. behold

  2893. his

  2894. glory

  2895. every

  2896. day

  2897. in

  2898. your

  2899. word

  2900. and

  2901. as

  2902. we

  2903. do

  2904. that

  2905. Lord

  2906. we

  2907. pray

  2908. that

  2909. you

  2910. would

  2911. by

  2912. your

  2913. spirit

  2914. transform

  2915. us

  2916. make

  2917. us

  2918. more
