  1. seven churches of Asia and the texts

  2. that are surrounding chapters 2 and

  3. three of the book of Revelation,

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  4. chapters 1 and chapters four and five

  5. and six.

  6. Uh needful to put that study in its

  7. context. We have one more message in

  8. that series that Lord willing and we'll

  9. close it out. Uh we'll be looking at the

  10. last chapter of Revelation, but today

  11. I'm going to just focus on the Lord's

  12. supper. I don't always do that.

  13. Sometimes I just let it fit in with our

  14. regular preaching series and try to work

  15. that in. But sometimes I believe it's

  16. important to just put aside everything

  17. else and focus focus deliberately on the

  18. cross of Calvary and what happened

  19. there. But I call your attention to

  20. first John chapter 2. First John chapter

1 John 2 chapter mention 1 John 2 chapter mention

  21. 2. Not the Gospel of John. These are the

  22. epistles of John that are back near the

  23. book of Revelation written by the same

  24. individual

  25. chapter 2 verse 1 to3. The reason they

  26. call it first John is there's 1 John, 2

  27. John and third John. There's three

  28. epistles of John.

  29. We are in 2 John 2.

  30. Our target passage today is verse 1 and

  31. two.

  32. My little children,

  33. remember John's 95 years old.

  34. Everybody's children to him.

  35. My little children.

  36. These things write I to you that you sin

  37. not.

  38. But if any man sin, we have an advocate.

  39. What King James teach says translates it

  40. as an advocate

  41. with the father Jesus Christ the

  42. righteous.

  43. And he that's our advocate.

  44. He is the propitiation for our sins and

  45. not for ours only but also for the sins

  46. of the whole world.

  47. That's our target passage for this

  48. morning.

  49. Father, help me to speak and each of us

  50. to hear as we come to this very very

  51. important section of God's word

  52. in Jesus name.

  53. Amen.

  54. Now, as we come to this particular

  55. subject

  56. and it's a big subject, when you're

  57. talking about Jesus Christ and when

  58. you're talking about his death on the

  59. cross, we're talking about salvation.

  60. It's a very big subject with many things

  61. included.

  62. But I would like to begin by quoting

  63. some prominent men in the past

  64. Christians. One was not. The last one

  65. was not.

  66. And just statements that they made

  67. that I think are profound

  68. and statements that these men made that

  69. will be helpful for us this morning.

  70. The first was Bishop JC Riyle. He was an

  71. Anglican bishop in Liverpool, England in

  72. the 1800s.

  73. He was of the low church. You know, the

  74. Anglicans got the high church that's

  75. more Catholic. The low church is

  76. evangelical.

  77. And Bishop JC Riyle

  78. said this, "Till men and women are

  79. brought to feel their sinfulness and

  80. need,

  81. no real good is ever done to their

  82. souls.

  83. Doctor can't help you if you think

  84. you're well

  85. and you won't admit you're sick."

  86. It's a great statement. Till men and

  87. women are brought to feel their

  88. sinfulness and need, no real good is

  89. ever done to their souls. Till a sinner

  90. sees himself as God sees him, he will

  91. continue careless and unmoved.

  92. Now, that's a very accurate statement.

  93. We know it.

  94. We're quite a I think he died 1900 or

  95. something like that. We're quite quite

  96. removed from him, but things haven't

  97. changed.

  98. And that that statement is still true.

  99. Second statement is from a Baptist. His

  100. name was Charles Spurgeon. We quote him

  101. a lot because he's very quotable.

  102. And he also lived back in that time

  103. period.

  104. He said, "Carn men love the God that

  105. they make, but not the God that made

  106. them."

  107. Carnal men love the God they make, but

  108. not the God that made them.

  109. Now, that's a very astute statement. And

  110. we're not just talking about

  111. non-Christian,

  112. non-church people. Sometimes even church

  113. people have a fantasy god in their mind

  114. that they've made,

  115. not the God of the Bible. They are not

  116. submitting to what the Bible says about

  117. God. They have a fantasy God in their

  118. own mind.

  119. And I' I've taught Bible classes before

  120. where people have said things like this.

  121. When you're talking about judgment or

  122. some kind of unpleasant subject, they

  123. say, "My God would never do that." Well,

  124. then your God's not the God of the

  125. Bible. I don't know who he is, but it's

  126. you made him up.

  127. And we can all make up gods in our

  128. heads, right?

  129. The only counter for that is what? The

  130. counter for that is immersing ourself in

  131. scriptures in learning to know the God

  132. of the Bible as he is, not as we

  133. fantasize he is.

  134. And so,

  135. uh, may God help us. So, Spurgeon

  136. statements very important. And the these

  137. two statements by these two men are very

  138. important for our section on uh uh uh

  139. first John.

  140. Till men and women are brought to feel

  141. their sinfulness and need. No real good

  142. is ever done to their souls. Till a

  143. sinner sees himself as God sees him, he

  144. will continue careless and unmoved. And

  145. spurred in statement, carnal men love

  146. the God they make and not the God that

  147. made them. This is a reality check

  148. message.

  149. It's a reality check message. Do we see

  150. ourselves as we are? Do we see God as he

  151. is?

  152. Then George Whitfield who was one of the

  153. founders of the Methodist Church, an

  154. anglican

  155. man before that, but a founder of the

  156. Methodist church with George Wesley.

  157. George

  158. John Wesley, excuse me, not George

  159. Wesley. I don't know. There was a George

  160. Wesley, George Whitfield and John

  161. Wesley.

  162. He said a true faith in Jesus Christ

  163. will not suffer us to be idle. No, it is

  164. an active lively restless uh principle.

  165. It fills the heart. So it cannot be easy

  166. till it's done something for Jesus

  167. Christ.

  168. When you got true faith, you've got

  169. to show it in some way. [snorts] You've

  170. got to respond in thanksgiving

  171. to God who did what he did for you at

  172. the cross.

  173. That's helpful as we come to

  174. Thanksgiving in November, isn't it? A

  175. true faith in Jesus Christ will not

  176. suffer us to be idol. No, it is an

  177. active, lively, restless principle. It

  178. fills the heart. So it cannot be easy

  179. till it's doing something for Jesus.

  180. Got to respond in faith to be saved but

  181. also in doing something to show my

  182. appreciation, my thanksgiving, my love

  183. for him. That's a great statement. Now

  184. those three statements by JC Riyle,

  185. Charles Spurgeon, and George Whitfield

  186. are good. Now I'm going to quote a

  187. non-Christian.

  188. Benjamin Franklin was not a Christian.

  189. Benjamin Franklin is at best a deist but

  190. probably not that. He probably got a

  191. little farther than that. But he was

  192. best he was very good friends with

  193. George Whitfield who was but there's no

  194. evidence Benjamin Franklin was ever a

  195. Christian.

  196. But he said this never ruin an apology

  197. with an excuse.

  198. Think about that statement by a

  199. non-Christian.

  200. Never ruin an apology

  201. with an excuse.

  202. If you're apologizing, you don't make

  203. excuses for yourself.

  204. I'm sorry. I did that. I shouldn't have

  205. said that. I shouldn't have done that. I

  206. should have done that, but I didn't get

  207. it done. Whatever the apology is,

  208. that's good for marriage counseling.

  209. That's good for interchurch

  210. relationships with Christians. That's

  211. good for us on the job. Never run ruin

  212. an apology with an excuse. And that was

  213. said by an unregenerate man.

  214. We all tend

  215. to make excuses.

  216. We all tend to make excuses.

  217. But that's not what we really need.

  218. We need honesty. We need truthfulness.

  219. And

  220. uh may God help us to do that. So those

  221. those are just things I just wanted to

  222. throw out to get us ready for this

  223. section. Now let's go back not 200 not

  224. 100 years to a thousand years to John

  225. writing first John

  226. and as we come back to him and we come

  227. back to this particular section

  228. it's very important for us to see it for

  229. what it is.

  230. What's that word propitiation

  231. in verse two?

  232. Don't raise your hand,

  233. but if you don't have a clue what that

  234. is, admit it to yourself.

  235. What's propitiation?

  236. Sounds something like perspiration.

  237. Well, what's propitiation?

  238. it it we read these words and we say I

  239. got a vague idea what that is but I

  240. really really don't have a solid grasp

  241. of what that is.

  242. I just don't know. I just really don't

  243. know. Now, John was writing

  244. 2,000 years ago,

  245. and the people he was writing to had a

  246. very clear idea

  247. of what that is.

  248. They had clarity

  249. where we don't have clarity.

  250. And I'm not saying you have to have

  251. total clarity on this particular word to

  252. be saved. I'm simply saying it's going

  253. to help you. I take four kinds of

  254. antihistamines for my allergies.

  255. One of them I can't pronounce. I've

  256. tried to I tried to and tried to. I can

  257. never pronounce it properly.

  258. I don't even know what it does. I just

  259. know it helps.

  260. And that's probably okay where with

  261. allergy medicine I can get away with

  262. that, but it's not okay. in theology.

  263. It's not okay in Bible study. We've got

  264. to know the meaning of the words even if

  265. we can't say that.

  266. So, it's very important this doctrine of

  267. propitiation.

  268. I'm going to spend a lot of time talking

  269. about

  270. and hopefully it will help you to get

  271. out of the vagueness of I have some

  272. vague idea what it is or I have

  273. absolutely no idea what it is and we

  274. will clarity will help us a lot

  275. and I'm going to start with the Lord

  276. Jesus Christ and I'm going to move down

  277. to different people who use this word or

  278. some form of this

  279. So turn with me to Luke 18.

  280. Luke 18. Hold your place. We're coming

  281. back to First John. We'll come back to

  282. First John, but we're going to go to a

  283. couple other places first. Luke 18, the

  284. fourth gospel in the New Testament.

  285. Luke 18.

  286. Now,

  287. our English translation doesn't help us

  288. here.

  289. too much.

  290. Uh

  291. it use a word it uses a word that's

  292. approximate

  293. but it doesn't help us too much here.

  294. But when you read it in the the Greek

  295. text it helps it you you get a little

  296. clearer idea. I'm not saying the English

  297. text is wrong. I'm just saying it's not

  298. as helpful.

  299. This is our Lord Jesus Christ and his

  300. very famous exposure of legalism.

  301. Have you ever met a legalist?

  302. There's no pride like religious pride.

  303. There's nothing that stinks worse than

  304. religious pride.

  305. There's nothing that's more offensive

  306. than religious pride. People that are

  307. proud and have the idea they're better

  308. than other people. That is filthy rags.

  309. That is, as Isaiah puts it, all our

  310. righteousness is filthy rags. And it

  311. certainly stinks. Well, Jesus had to

  312. deal with people like that.

  313. They were his critics. He could go

  314. nowhere, but they were they were coming

  315. around criticizing him and so forth.

  316. So in Luke chapter 18 verse 9

    Luke 18:9

  317. speaking of Jesus he said now if you're

  318. new of Bible study this is a great

  319. section for you to get

  320. and he that's Jesus spoke this parable

  321. unto certain who trusted in themselves

  322. they were righteous and despised others.

  323. What's the problem with these people?

  324. They think they're better than other

  325. people. How many people imagine that

  326. Christians think they're better than

  327. other people? You think you're better

  328. than other people? Well, I know there's

  329. some churchgoers that think they're

  330. better than other people. The Christians

  331. know better than that.

  332. Paul said of sinners, I'm chief. He

  333. didn't think he was better than other

  334. people. He thought all kinds of other

  335. people were better than him.

  336. So Jesus told this parable whose

  337. religion actually made him worse than

  338. better,

  339. the Pharisees.

  340. And he spoke this parable unto certain

  341. who trusted in themselves that they were

  342. righteous and despised others. So he's

  343. aiming at that group.

  344. Two men went up into the temple to pray.

  345. The one a Pharisee and the other a tax

  346. collector. Our

  347. Lord's very bold here.

  348. And the Pharisees stood and prayed with

  349. himself. God, I thank thee I'm not as

  350. other men, extortioners, unjust,

  351. adulterers, and even like this tax

  352. collector.

  353. I suppose that prayer got to heaven, the

  354. smell of it.

  355. Certainly a stinky prayer, wasn't it?

  356. He goes on, "I fast twice in the week."

  357. Now, the Old Testament said you to Jews

  358. should fast once a year.

  359. This guy's stricter than God.

  360. Pharisees prided themselves. God demands

  361. one fast a year. We're [clears throat]

  362. going to fast twice a

  363. fast twice. There weren't too many fat

  364. Pharisees. Guess

  365. that was one good thing about them.

  366. But they had a superiority complex

  367. because of they they would take God's

  368. law and then they tried to be stricter

  369. than God. And whenever you see people

  370. doing that, people do it today. Whenever

  371. somebody's stricter than God in one

  372. area, you know they're looser in God in

  373. another area and they're trying to make

  374. up for it by being stricter in some

  375. other area. And that is that is a fool's

  376. errand.

  377. So don't get impressed.

  378. People are so stricter than God. They're

  379. stricter than the Bible. I fast twice in

  380. the week. I give tithe of all I possess.

  381. I don't just give my money. I give

  382. tithes out of my garden. I tithe my

  383. carrots. I tithe my, you know, my beans.

  384. They did that kind of stuff.

  385. Now, he's not lying. He He did fast

  386. twice a week. He did give tithes of all

  387. he possessed. That was phariseism. He

  388. wasn't like those other men in the sense

  389. he did the things they did. He was

  390. worse,

  391. but he didn't know it.

  392. Now here comes the tax collector.

  393. Tax collectors in the Jewish culture of

  394. the first century were below

  395. prostitutes,

  396. below below murderers.

  397. They were the people who made a lot of

  398. money being disloyal to their own

  399. country because the taxes they were

  400. collecting were for Rome.

  401. And so those were people who were were

  402. money meant more to them than loyalty to

  403. their country or to God.

  404. And this guy had a bad reputation. Tax

  405. collector. If you were a tax collector,

  406. you could not give testimony in a court

  407. of law in the first century. You were

  408. considered so reprobate, so dishonest,

  409. so so uh unreliable, you would not give

  410. you weren't allowed to give testimony.

  411. You were the scum.

  412. And so anyway, the tax collector

  413. standing a far off would not lift up as

  414. much as his eyes to heaven, but smokeote

  415. his breast, saying, "God, be propitiated

  416. to me a sinner."

  417. King James says, "Have mercy." That

  418. mercy comes from the word propitiate.

  419. This not all the words for mercy, but

  420. the mercy seat and some other places in

  421. the Bible. He's asking for God to be

  422. propitiated to him.

  423. Be propitiated to me a sinner.

  424. Now, this was before the cross of

  425. Calvary, not after the cross of Calvary.

  426. So, none of us have to pray this exact

  427. prayer because God has been come down

  428. here and been to propitiation for our

  429. sins, not for ours only, but all folks

  430. for the sins of the whole world.

  431. So Jesus is and then goes on and he says

  432. verse 14, here's the surprise ending.

  433. I tell you this man went down to his

  434. house justified rather than the other.

  435. Who's this man? The man who admitted his

  436. sin.

  437. What about the other man? He didn't

  438. admit any sin. He thought he was better

  439. than everybody else. He's just bragging.

  440. thought he was praying.

  441. If your me if your religion makes you a

  442. braggger and your religion makes you

  443. think you're better than other people,

  444. you better change your religion.

  445. And so Jesus said, "This man went down

  446. to his house justified." That means

  447. declared just or declared righteous.

  448. That's what justified means. That the

  449. judge declares you righteous or declares

  450. you just rather than the other. For

  451. everyone that exalts himself, that's the

  452. first guy, shall be abased, and he that

  453. humbles himself shall be exalted. It's a

  454. very excellent parable. It's a very

  455. important parable.

  456. The first guy was bragging more than

  457. praying. The second man saw his sin and

  458. uh on and so forth. First guy saw sin in

  459. other people, but not himself. And the

  460. sad thing, he was like other men,

  461. although he thought he wasn't. He was

  462. very much like other men. He'd gone the

  463. way of sa Cain.

  464. What's the way of Cain? Book of Jude

  465. uses that. They false teachers in the

  466. New Testament. They gone the way of

  467. Cain. Self-righteous.

  468. Not content with the religion God has

  469. revealed. Making up your own religion.

  470. Hating others that don't go along with

  471. your fantasies.

  472. A murderer of his own brother.

  473. And so according to the book of Jude,

  474. all false all false Christianity, all

  475. false religion, they've gone the way of

  476. Cain.

  477. Nothing new under the sun. Two kinds of

  478. religions. The way religion of Abel,

  479. which is a religion of revelation and

  480. redemption by God, the religion of Cain,

  481. which is a way of fantasy and legalism

  482. and self-righteousness.

  483. Now this is a fascinating text of

  484. scripture. The Pharisee wanted praise

  485. and congratulations.

  486. The tax collector wanted propitiation

  487. and consolation.

  488. One man went home saved. The other man

  489. went home just like he was stuck in his

  490. own stinking self-righteousness.

  491. Now according to the Lord Jesus Christ

  492. in this parable

  493. propitiation is available for the worst

  494. sinners. That's what the tax collectors

  495. were. They were the worst of the worst

  496. in that culture.

  497. So there is no person on this planet

  498. that is out that is too sinful to be

  499. saved if they repent of their sins and

  500. come to Jesus Christ and trust him as

  501. their savior. And our Lord Jesus Christ

  502. is very clear on that. Propitiation is a

  503. available to the worst of sinners. And

  504. uh

  505. by the way propitiation and

  506. justification go together. this man went

  507. down to his house justified

  508. rather than the other.

  509. So if you're if you're if you your sins

  510. have been propitiated, you'll see it in

  511. Romans 3, it goes with justification. It

  512. all comes as a package.

  513. Okay, so that's helpful. Thank you, Lord

  514. Jesus. That's helpful. We've learned a

  515. little bit about propitiation from our

  516. Lord directly.

  517. Uh, and hopefully we will, that's a

  518. lesson we won't unlearn or forget.

  519. Now, let's go back to Moses.

  520. Let's go back to Moses.

  521. Why would we go back to Moses?

  522. Because Moses was the [clears throat]

  523. man who gave the Ten Commandments. God

  524. gave the Ten Commandments through Moses.

  525. Moses is the man that gave the case law

  526. which case law is just uh applications

  527. of one of the ten commandments in a more

  528. specified fashion. The same book of

  529. Exodus that gives us the ten

  530. commandments gives us case law and the

  531. case law is specific examples of how

  532. each of those ten commandments apply.

  533. We can thank John Calvin for that

  534. understanding that and many others uh in

  535. the Old Testament those scholars as

  536. well.

  537. But let's think about this and let's go

  538. back to Exodus chapter 30. Hold your

    Exodus 30 chapter mention

  539. place in 1 John and go back to Exodus

    Exodus 30 chapter mention

  540. chapter 30. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus,

  541. Numbers, Deuteronomy. Exodus is the

  542. second book in the Bible.

  543. Now, right after God gave the ten

  544. commandments, get the he gave the law

  545. first,

  546. but then he gave the instructions of how

  547. to build a tabernacle.

  548. And in that tabernacle

  549. was the holy of holies and the holy

  550. place. And in the holy of holies

  551. was was what? The ark of the covenant.

  552. And the ark of the covenant was a box.

  553. And inside the ark mark there was

  554. there's a round chains on the on the

  555. side. You could carry it with poles

  556. lifted up on your shoulders. But in the

  557. ark of the covenant was what? What was

  558. in the ark of the covenant? The ten

  559. commandments.

  560. Now there was other stuff in there.

  561. Aaron's rod, the budded and and the mana

  562. and other. But the ten commandments that

  563. Moses brought down from Mount Si were

  564. inside that box, the ark of the

  565. covenant.

  566. And what was on the top of it?

  567. A beautiful gold lid.

  568. And that lid had angels on both sides

  569. looking

  570. at not at each other, but looking at the

  571. lid. Kind of a stool like golden lid.

  572. It's called the mercy seat.

  573. And the mercy seat was the place

  574. where the high priest would go in. He

  575. went to the holy of holies and then he

  576. went in once a year. He went in to the

  577. hol he went to the holy place and then

  578. he went into the holy of holies and put

  579. blood

  580. sacrificial blood

  581. on the mercy seat.

  582. You go in there, sprinkle the blood,

  583. walk out.

  584. Now, there's one other thing I want you

  585. to see before we read this section.

  586. In the tabernacle and later in the

  587. temple, the shikina glory

  588. appeared.

  589. The shikina glory

  590. was a manifestation of God. God's

  591. presence

  592. wasn't a raincloud.

  593. It was a manifestation of God.

  594. a bright cloud that appeared in the Holy

  595. of Holies

  596. where God was manifesting himself to his

  597. people.

  598. And we could call it a glory cloud.

  599. Now, after the Babylonian captivity,

  600. right before that, right before

  601. Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem, the

  602. glory cloud left

  603. and the prophet Ezekiel saw it leave.

  604. It left. It left the temple. It left. It

  605. left for the mount of olives which is

  606. higher than the temple. And then it

  607. departed.

  608. And that glory cloud was the

  609. pre-incarnate Lord Jesus Christ

  610. dwelling with his people before he was

  611. born.

  612. The Bible predicts the return of that

  613. glory cloud.

  614. The Bible predicts the return of Jesus

  615. Christ.

  616. But the point of this whole thing is

  617. between a holy God

  618. and a sinful people who broken the Ten

  619. Commandments. Get the picture in your

  620. head.

  621. The Ten Commandments are in the box. The

  622. nation has broken the Ten Commandments.

  623. between a nation who's broken the Ten

  624. Commandments and a holy God that's in

  625. the is in the Holy of Holies is the

  626. mercy seat. And on the mercy seat is

  627. what? Blood.

  628. And the blood says that the penalty for

  629. sin has been paid.

  630. And it's a great picture of the cross of

  631. Jesus

  632. before it happened

  633. because animal sacrifices were, you've

  634. heard me say, was the credit card where

  635. God could dwell among a sinful people

  636. based on the penalty that would be made

  637. of Jesus later. So let's read Exodus

    Exodus 30 chapter mention

  638. chapter 30.

  639. Not the whole chapter, but just this

  640. first part.

  641. And thou

  642. and thou shalt make an altar to burn

  643. incense on it. Ofacia wood, you'll make

  644. it. A cubit shall be the length thereof,

  645. and a cubit the breadth thereof, four

  646. square shall it be, two cubits shall be

  647. the height thereof, and the horns

  648. thereof shall be the same. You overlay

  649. it with pure gold the top thereof and

  650. the sides thereof. Round about the horns

  651. thereof. And you'll make of the rim

  652. about it of gold round about two golden

  653. rings shall you make to to it under the

  654. rim of it by the two corners thereof

  655. upon the sides you'll make it. And

  656. there'll be places for the staves which

  657. to bear it. You'll make the staves of

  658. acacia wood and overlay them with gold.

  659. And you put it before the veil that is

  660. by the ark of the testimony, before the

  661. mercy seat, which is over the testimony.

  662. It's over the testimony where I'll meet

  663. with you. And Aaron shall burn sweet

  664. incense every morning. And he dresses

  665. the lamps, he'll burn incense on it. And

  666. when Aaron lights the lamps of the

  667. evening, he'll burn incense on it, the

  668. perpetual incense of the Lord throughout

  669. your generations. You'll make no strange

  670. incense, neither upon the sacrifice or

  671. the meal offering, neither shall you

  672. pour drink offering. Aaron will make

  673. atonement on the horns of it once in a

  674. year with the blood of the sin offering

  675. of the atonements. Once in a year shall

  676. I make atonement upon it without your

  677. generations. It is most holy to the

  678. Lord.

  679. The mercy seat is the place where

  680. propitiation takes place so that mercy

  681. can take place.

  682. Amazing

  683. picture

  684. between a holy God and a broken law is

  685. the blood of the sacrifice where the law

  686. has been satisfied and death has taken

  687. place because the penalty of all sin is

  688. death.

  689. The only way a holy God could fellowship

  690. with sinful nation who broken and are

  691. breaking his law is by the blood being

  692. shed and applied on the mercy seat.

  693. This is a marvelous thing

  694. in the Old Testament.

  695. And when the Jewish people in the Old

  696. Testament or when the early church, most

  697. of whom were Jews, heard the word

  698. propitiation, they knew exactly what it

  699. meant.

  700. They had a reference

  701. in their minds to help them understand

  702. it. They knew what redeem meant. Agora,

  703. the agora was the Greek word for

  704. marketplace. And algoro means to redeem,

  705. buy in the marketplace.

  706. Ex agarzo, buy in the marketplace and

  707. take it away. Take it away. They

  708. understood those words because they had

  709. a background for that vocabulary.

  710. Now, so thank you, Moses. That's

  711. helpful. Now, we understand by the

  712. tabernacle and temple. Now we understand

  713. by all of Jewish history what God was

  714. picturing and promoting and prophesying

  715. what was going to happen at the cross

  716. because in first John Christ is our

  717. propitiation

  718. that's what's so precious

  719. now so we thank the Lord for the Lord

  720. Jesus and his parable and now we thank

  721. uh Moses and we could go to other places

  722. there turn with me to a third person,

  723. the Apostle Paul. Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  724. Romans chapter 3, verse 23.

    Romans 3:23

  725. Romans 3:23. We're back in the New

    Romans 3:23

  726. Testament.

  727. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans,

  728. Romans chapter 3, verse 23. For all have

    Romans 3:23

  729. sinned and are coming short of the glory

  730. of God. That's a present tense. No one's

  731. no one ever gets sinless in this life.

  732. Even Christians,

  733. we sin less, but we never become

  734. sinless.

  735. And it says, "Being justified or

  736. declared righteous freely by his grace

  737. through the redemption that's in Christ

  738. Jesus, whom he set forth to be a what?

  739. A propitiation."

  740. Oh, now we got the vocabulary.

  741. Propitiation is a gift that takes away

  742. wrath.

  743. Through faith in his blood, declare his

  744. righteousness for the remission of sins

  745. that are passed through the forbearance

  746. of God. This is the most technical

  747. theological vocabulary in the New

  748. Testament. It's right here in these

  749. verses.

  750. You know the vocabulary, you begin to

  751. understand the section.

  752. So, thank you, Apostle Paul. Thank you

  753. for teaching that. And now we connect

  754. justification, grace, redemption, and

  755. propitiation all together. That's very

  756. helpful.

  757. Now, let's go back to John himself. 1

  758. John 4, not 1 John 2 where we were, but

  759. in the same book he mentions

  760. propitiation a second time.

  761. 1 John chapter 4 and verse 10.

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  762. 1 John 4:10.

    1 John 4:10

  763. Here it is. Love,

  764. not that we love God.

  765. You want to learn love, you don't have

  766. to look to people. You have to look to

  767. God. Here in his love, not that we love

  768. God. That he

  769. but he that loved us and sent his son to

  770. be the what?

  771. Propitiation for our sin.

  772. That's a that's astounding verse.

  773. It was love that provided.

  774. Now, I'm going to quote a fairly famous

  775. contemporary pastor.

  776. Uh certainly there are several areas

  777. where I would disagree with him in major

  778. way.

  779. Reformed Baptist pastor, his name is

  780. John Piper.

  781. Some of the things he writes I don't

  782. like. Some of the things he writes I do

  783. like.

  784. He's written a great book, Desiring God.

  785. He's written great book on providence. I

  786. haven't read that one yet.

  787. But he wrote a devotional book on the

  788. cross.

  789. I'm not trying to promote Dr. Piper. I'm

  790. simply trying to illustrate something

  791. from this book he wrote.

  792. It came out in year 2006.

  793. 50 reasons why Jesus came to die.

  794. It's a nice little devotional using

  795. Bible verses and a little two-page

  796. statement for each one. Each of the 50.

  797. Guess

  798. what the first of the 50 was

  799. dealing with propitiation.

  800. And he calls this to absorb the wrath

  801. of God.

  802. And he quotes Galatians 3:13, "Christ

    Galatians 3:13

  803. redeemed us from the curse of the law,

  804. becoming a curse for us, for it's

  805. written, cursed is everyone who hangs on

  806. a tree." He quotes Romans 3:25, "But God

    Romans 3:25

  807. put Christ forward as a propitiation by

  808. his blood to be received by faith." And

  809. he quotes 1 John 4:10. In this ear in

    1 John 4:10

  810. his love, not that we loved God, that he

  811. loved us and sent his son to be

  812. propitiation for our sins. This is what

  813. he said. If God were not just,

  814. there would be no demand for his son to

  815. suffer and die.

  816. And if God were not loving, there'd be

  817. no willingness for the son to suffer and

  818. die.

  819. But God is both just and loving.

  820. Therefore, his his love is willing to

  821. meet the demands of his justice.

  822. A little later he says, "Therefore sin's

  823. not small because it's against a small

  824. sovereign. The seriousness of the insult

  825. rises with the dignity of the one

  826. insulted. The creator of the universe is

  827. infinitely worthy of respect and

  828. admiration and loyalty. Therefore,

  829. failure to love him is not trivial. It's

  830. treason. It defames God and destroys

  831. human happiness.

  832. And so, he's putting propitiation into

  833. context. And I thank him for it. This

  834. communion Sunday, 2,000 years later,

  835. from the cross,

  836. we want to praise God for what he did

  837. for us at the cross of God.

  838. Propitiation is needed because God is

  839. righteous.

  840. Propitiation is provided

  841. because God is love.

  842. Leon Morris is a Greek scholar of the

  843. 20th century,

  844. incredible on these Bible terminology

  845. things. He's written several books on

  846. it.

  847. But he wrote an article in Evangelical

  848. Dictionary of theology that I have

  849. and this was his definition of

  850. propitiation. Turning away of wrath by

  851. an offer.

  852. turning away of wrath by an offering. Do

  853. you remember when uh Jacob's coming home

  854. and remember how nasty he was to his

  855. older brother

  856. and his older brother had a temper

  857. and Jacob fears he's going to be killed

  858. and all his family. He knew all the bad

  859. he did to him.

  860. What'd he do?

  861. He sent presents ahead.

  862. So before Esau met him, he meets all

  863. these presents, sheep and I don't know

  864. what all he said. He sent a whole bunch

  865. of animals.

  866. So between an offended brother and Jacob

  867. were all these presents.

  868. And that's exactly what God has done.

  869. between an offended law and a holy God

  870. is Christ's propitiation that God

  871. himself has provided.

  872. Now, people don't like the idea of the

  873. wrath of God, but if God listen, God's

  874. righteous whether you like it or not,

  875. and the idea of the wrath of God is

  876. stubbornly rooted in the in the Old

  877. Testament and the New Testament. It

  878. appears 585 times

  879. And so it's very important

  880. and remember said God said the life is

  881. in the blood and I've given it to you to

  882. make atonement for the soul.

  883. The Bible said it before science has

  884. discovered it. Your blood takes the food

  885. to your soul and takes the waste to your

  886. soul. No, it doesn't do that. The blood

  887. takes your your the food to the cells

  888. and it takes the waste out of the cells.

  889. And so the blood is very important and

  890. it's a perfect symbol for God to use.

  891. And the paradox of the Old Testament of

  892. a holy God living with a sinful people

  893. is repeated in the New Testament on a

  894. greater scale. God provides himself the

  895. way to remove his wrath.

  896. Animal blood in the Old Testament,

  897. Jesus's blood in the New Testament.

  898. And God is angry

  899. at those who reject him as creator and

  900. rebelling against his law. And this

  901. anger of the creator is in because of

  902. the unthankfulness of the created.

  903. But this is what God does.

  904. God propitiates himself.

  905. Propitiation is a gift. Takes away

  906. wrath.

  907. God pre propitiates himself.

  908. So we can take all this information from

  909. the Lord Jesus, from Moses, from Paul

  910. and John, and here in his love, not that

  911. we love God, but he loved us and sent

  912. his son to be a propitiation for our

  913. sins. We can take that and apply it to

  914. ourselves. Holy angels do not need

  915. propitiation because they've never

  916. sinned. Fallen angels don't get it

  917. because it's not provided for them.

  918. It's only provided for humans. Hebrews

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  919. chapter 2 16-1 17.

  920. And so what does God want of us? He

  921. wants us to not pretend we're better

  922. than we are.

  923. He wants us to know we've failed. We've

  924. sinned and admitted. Don't plead not

  925. guilty when you're guilty.

  926. Plead guilty and say, "I'm guilty. I'm

  927. guilty of sin. I'm guilty, but Jesus

  928. died for me and he paid for my sins.

  929. And I'm trusting in that gift and I love

  930. you because of it.

  931. We are guilty but we have a good lawyer.

  932. We have an advocate.

  933. That's exactly what that term means.

  934. There's a story. This happened in the

  935. 1960s.

  936. It's very interesting story.

  937. It happened down in Panama City Beach,

  938. Florida.

  939. There's a petty crim criminal

  940. that uh was involved in this. He'd been

  941. arrested, put in jail, got out, been

  942. arrested for this, that drugs, breaking

  943. and entering all kinds of stuff.

  944. But in this time, a pool room got

  945. robbed. cigarette machine, the candy

  946. machine, the all just petty robbery,

  947. maybe about $250 worth of stuff,

  948. something. That was a lot of money in

  949. those days. And this guy got charged

  950. with it. He somebody saw him near there

  951. and they said, "Well, it had to be him.

  952. It's He does that all the time."

  953. And so when he went to court, he asked

  954. the court to provide an attorney for him

  955. to represent him.

  956. And the judge says, "No."

  957. Why did he say no? Because at that time

  958. in American history, at that time in

  959. American history, you could have a

  960. courtappointed attorney if you couldn't

  961. afford one only if it was a capital

  962. punishment crime.

  963. They're going to hang you or electrocut

  964. you. You could have a courtappointed

  965. attorney at that time. petty theft or

  966. other kinds of stuff. You they wouldn't

  967. give you a quarter point attorney.

  968. So what happened? That guy who wasn't

  969. very educated uh and he certainly wasn't

  970. had he got creamed. He tried to defend

  971. himself. He didn't know what questions

  972. to ask. He didn't know what procedures

  973. to do. So he got arrested and thrown

  974. into prison.

  975. He got a fiveyear sentence. He spent two

  976. of those five years studying law.

  977. You know what he did? He took a five

  978. pieces of paper and a pencil and

  979. requested the Supreme Court

  980. to

  981. deal with this issue of a courtappointed

  982. attorney and that it should be not just

  983. for murder but for anything.

  984. And surprisingly in 1961

  985. the court the United States Supreme

  986. Court granted that and provided an

  987. attorney for him. Abe Bordis who was

  988. such a good attorney he later was

  989. promoted to the Supreme Court at the

  990. time

  991. and he won.

  992. Now what was the what was going on

  993. there?

  994. The earlier trial, he was his own

  995. attorney. He had no attorney. He had no

  996. got he had no appointed attorney. The

  997. second one, he had a very capable

  998. attorney and the attorney got him off.

  999. And that's an incredible case. It's a

  1000. it's it's an incredible situation

  1001. really.

1002. Now, how does that apply to us?

1003. 1 John 2, if any man sin, we have an

1004. advocate with the father, an attorney

1005. provided by the father, Jesus Christ,

1006. our righteous, uh, the righteous one. We

1007. have a godappointed attorney, not just a

  1008. supreme courtappointed attorney. Now,

1009. that man got off because the attorney

1010. pleaded not guilty. He wasn't guilty.

1011. You can't prove he was guilty and he

  1012. showed it in court.

  1013. But we're guilty.

  1014. We're not not guilty,

1015. but our attorney has paid for our sin.

1016. And as Wesley says, five bleeding

1017. wounds. He's talking about the five

1018. bleeding wounds of Christ, our attorney.

1019. Don't let that sinner die.

1020. Thank God for our God-appointed attorney

1021. in the highest court ever. Not the

1022. Supreme Court of the United States, but

  1023. the court of heaven.

1024. Now, you know, Hollywood liked that so

1025. much they made a movie out of it. Henry

1026. Ford starred at that. Starred in that

  1027. movie as that guy.

1028. We got something better in a movie.

  1029. We've got a situation where Jesus

1030. Christ, we were guilty. We were not

1031. guilty. We were not not guilty.

1032. No, we were guilty. humanity.

1033. All have sinned and come short of the

1034. glory of God. That's what the Bible

  1035. says.

1036. And so may God help us as we come to

1037. this section of his word.

1038. By the way, the apostle John includes

  1039. himself.

  1040. He says are

1041. and all this is a correction of chapter

1042. one where people are pretending they

1043. haven't sinned. when they really have.

  1044. Don't say you haven't sinned. Don't say

1045. if we say if we say if we say three

  1046. different scenarios where people

1047. professing Christians are trying to get

1048. out of the fact they're still sinners.

1049. And then he comes down to this.

1050. What a wonderful section of scripture.

1051. Years I spent in vanity and pride,

1052. carrying not my Lord was crucified,

1053. knowing not it was for me he died

  1054. of count.

1055. Why would you not want this Khorn

1056. appointed at time? Why would you

1057. continuing continue to deny your need

1058. your your guilt when you know you're

1059. guilty? You haven't loved God with all

1060. your heart, all your soul, and all your

1061. might. You haven't loved your neighbor

  1062. as yourself. You haven't. I haven't.

1063. None of us have. Guilty as charged, but

1064. we have Jesus. That's the good news.

  1065. That's the

1066. How can we ever forget that he paid?

1067. How can we ever live as if that didn't

  1068. happen?

  1069. I'm getting a little personal here

1070. personal here at the end, but

  1071. I lived in the 60s. In the 1960s,

1072. usually unless you were really rich,

1073. your parents didn't pay for your

1074. college. You want to go to college, you

1075. had to pay for your home. I started

1076. mowing grass when I'm 12 years old and

1077. painting gutter spouts when I was 16,

1078. pumping gas, doing other jobs, working

1079. in restaurants, busting tables, being a

1080. grill cook, everything I could do.

1081. And at the end of my college career, I

1082. spent a year at my dad's restaurant

  1083. earning the $2,000 for my $2,500

  1084. school loan.

1085. My parents kicked in the last 500.

1086. Can I ever forget that my parents did

  1087. that for me?

1088. Why would I want to do that?

1089. My grandparents let me live with them

1090. for a year when I went to the OU branch

1091. in Chilikothy before I came to this

1092. campus. They've refused any money for

  1093. rent, food or board. Can't I can't

  1094. forget that.

1095. Um the pastor that started this church

1096. go from Chilikopathy for se six years or

1097. seven I forget which it was at his own

  1098. expense.

1099. never got any gas money even

1100. to teach a Bible class every Thursday

1101. night and then later to hold a church

  1102. service on Sunday morning

1103. all at his own expense.

  1104. Can I forget that?

1105. I hope you will forget it because

  1106. it's affected you.

  1107. I went I uh when I was a young pastor

1108. here, I drove for 13 years up to

1109. northern Ohio and we started a church up

1110. there. 13 years of driving up and back

1111. at my own expense except they started

  1112. paying me gas money.

1113. And then when it was all over, they

1114. bought me a used Mercury.

  1115. It'll be a used car.

1116. That car's distri They had distributors

1117. back then and it had a crack distributor

1118. and that I'd always have to fiddle with

1119. it to get it started. But

1120. I don't forget the people that gave it

  1121. to me.

1122. Never asked for it, never thought about

1123. it, do I think they saw my cars had

  1124. something to be desired.

1125. I have relatives on Linda's side and my

1126. side that have taken us on vacations

1127. that we could never afford.

  1128. Can I forget that?

1129. Why would I? How could I forget that?

1130. This church has paid me a monthly salary

  1131. for 49 years.

1132. Do you think I can forget that?

1133. What kind of person would I be to forget

  1134. that?

  1135. Um,

1136. when I was a a very young pastor, we had

1137. three kids and it's the only time my

1138. credit card got out of control because

1139. we had bills we had trouble paying. Some

1140. old man not even knowing that. Some old

1141. man not even knowing that put me in his

  1142. will.

  1143. $10,000.

1144. That was a total surprise.

  1145. I didn't know that man had a dime.

  1146. Can I forget that?

1147. That happened a long time ago.

1148. Um, shall we remember those things?

1149. Those kind of things where people gave

1150. us their time, gave us their attention,

1151. gave us their love, gave us their lives.

1152. Time is worth more than money, right?

1153. Somebody invested time in you.

1154. Somebody invested time in me. Shall we

1155. remember them and forget our savior,

1156. forget our God, forget our coinappointed

1157. attorney that knew it was going to cost

1158. him his life to represent us before a

1159. holy God? And he did.

1160. Shall we ignore our sin and pretend

1161. we're better than we are in light of

1162. what he has done? What an insult.

  1163. What treachery.

1164. May we remember Romans 6:23. The wages

    Romans 6:23

1165. of sin is death, but the gift of God is

1166. eternal life through Jesus Christ our

  1167. Lord.

1168. If you are not yet a Christian,

1169. may God work in your life,

1170. may God work in your life to show you

  1171. your need.

  1172. I didn't know I was that bad.

1173. I haven't loved God with all my heart,

1174. all my soul, and all my night. And I

1175. haven't loved my neighbor as myself. But

  1176. that's the standard. I didn't know even

  1177. know the standard,

  1178. but now I do.

1179. And Jesus is the only one who's ever

  1180. done that.

1181. And he's willing to pay for my sins. And

1182. he paid for them at the cross of God. As

1183. John says, not for ours only, but also

1184. for the sins of the whole world.

1185. What a wonderful thing that is.

1186. We all have to take advantage of that.

1187. that only becomes ours if we repent and

1188. believe, but is provided. If we don't

1189. take it, shame on us.

1190. So, as we come to the Lord's supper

1191. today and we pass the bread, it

  1192. represents his body.

1193. It's Passover bread. God said, "And

1194. Passover blood is the cup." Remember,

1195. God said at the Passover, "When I see

1196. the blood, I'll pass over you." And

1197. Jesus is our Passover lamb who died on

  1198. Passover day. No coincidence.

1199. All the 365 days of the year he died on

  1200. Passover.

  1201. And the Lord's supper

  1202. replaces Passover.

1203. Passover pictured the cross of Calvary.

1204. and I see the blood of Passover.

1205. Father, thank you for what we've looked

1206. at today. anyone yet is not yet a

1207. Christian or maybe they've thought

1208. salvation was something they could earn

1209. or simp because they were better than

1210. other people or not as bad as other

1211. people they got a free ticket

1212. trying to represent themsel before God

1213. instead of trusting in the one you

1214. provided the court heavenly court of the

  1215. appointed attorney

  1216. Jesus Christ the righteous

1217. Thank you Lord for your unspeakable

  1218. gift. Amen.
