  1. ingly the lamb wins.

  2. Now normally the dragon would have lamb

  3. shish kebab

  4. but in this case the dragon loses

  5. and the lamb wins because the lamb is

  6. the lord Jesus Christ. He wind he he

  7. wins by dying

  8. paying for your sin and mine defeating

  9. Satan over us.

  10. ending the battle between Satan and God

  11. decisively.

  12. So much so in Revelation 12 when the

  13. devil's kicked out of heaven, he knows

  14. his time is short.

  15. He knows he can't win, but he has no

  16. other alternative to fight.

  17. There's just wonderful stuff here.

  18. And so in verse 17, the spirit and the

  19. bride say, "Come."

  20. And let him that heareth say, "Come."

  21. And let him that is a thirst come. Three

  22. times come.

  23. And whosoever will, let him take of the

  24. water of life freely. That's a gospel

  25. invitation.

  26. That's a gospel confrontation.

  27. For I testify to every man who hears the

  28. words of the prophecy of this book, if

  29. any man shall add unto these things, God

  30. will add to him the plagues that are

  31. written in this book. Don't want to do

  32. that.

  33. You don't want to add to the book of

  34. Revelation. Make it something it's not.

  35. You don't want to take away either.

  36. You want to receive it as it's given.

  37. And if any man take away the words of

  38. this book, and that doesn't just mean

  39. cut it out of the cannon or selectively

  40. use it, it means misinterpret it as well

  41. in the sense of a dramatic avoidance of

  42. what it's really saying.

  43. Now, none of us are totally clear on the

  44. book of Revelation, but we got to be

  45. honest with it.

  46. And sometimes we got to put our

  47. prejudices aside and let God speak to

  48. us.

  49. And I know there are good Christians,

  50. different positions on this and I'm I

  51. recognize that. But with but but

  52. certainly there's there is some room for

  53. that. But the uh but a total distortion

  54. of what God's saying here and avoidance

  55. is a bad thing to do.

  56. So in verse 19, if any man will take

  57. away from the words of the book of this

  58. prophecy, God will take away his part

  59. from the tree of life and out of the

  60. holy city and from the things that are

  61. written in this book. He who testifies

  62. these things says, "Surely I come

  63. quickly." That's the Lord Jesus.

  64. Amen. Even so come, Lord Jesus. The

  65. grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with

  66. you all.

  67. Father, help me to speak and each of us

  68. to hear Jesus name. Amen.

  69. As we conclude our studies,

  70. I'm going to quote three three Christian

  71. scholars

  72. from different denominations

  73. as they celebrate and even different

  74. positions

  75. on some of the details of this book,

  76. celebrating the grander of it. And their

  77. words are better than anything I could

  78. say. So I want you to think about this.

  79. The first is a Menanite scholar

  80. who ministered in a seminary in

  81. California. His his name is D. Edmund

  82. Heert. Anything you get from him is

  83. tremendous.

  84. I think he's probably with the Lord now.

  85. He was very active in the 60s.

  86. And he said,

  87. "The book of Revelation is the true

  88. capstone of the Bible."

  89. What's a capstone? That's the top stone.

  90. The book of Revelation is the true

  91. capstone of the Bible. It is the only

  92. distinctively prophetic book in the New

  93. Testament. Other New Testament books

  94. contain various prophetic portions, but

  95. none of them provides such a sustained

  96. prophetic picture of the future as is

  97. given in the concluding book of the

  98. biblical canon.

  99. Prophecy is important.

  100. Some people think it's of no importance.

  101. They're You think you're smarter than

  102. God?

  103. God knows that prophecy is important.

  104. Even if you don't totally understand it,

  105. we need to know God's God's got the

  106. steering wheel till the last of history.

  107. Prophecy is important and without it,

  108. our Bible would be quite incomplete,

  109. like a stirring story without an ending

  110. or drama without a climax.

  111. My wife and I have been watching a a

  112. television detective show and it ended

  113. in a kind of a down ending

  114. and the fans hated it so bad they had to

  115. put a good ending on it. They added one.

  116. Well, that we got a good ending

  117. in the Bible for God and his purposes

  118. and his church.

  119. And so it said he says without it our

  120. Bible would be quite incomplete like a

  121. stirring story without an ending or a

  122. drama without its climax. It brings the

  123. esqueological that's teaching of last

  124. things. It brings the esqueological

  125. expectations of the church to their

  126. fitting conclusion. It supplies the

  127. finishing touch of the whole panorama of

  128. the biblical story. It is truly the book

  129. of consumation.

  130. That which is begun in the book of

  131. Genesis is brought to its conclusion in

  132. the book of revelation.

  133. It is irreplaceable

  134. for those who spiritually illuminated

  135. eyes. The apocalypse and that's the

  136. other name for revelation

  137. is one of the most precious and

  138. extraordinary writings in the world.

  139. Now I believe that. I hope you believe

  140. and it's good to know the good guys win

  141. and that's the white hats win right in

  142. the westerns not the black hats get the

  143. clue all along who's going to be the at

  144. least the old western I'm talking about

  145. the 30s and 40s big guy always wor white

  146. so thank you de edund he

  147. and I hope as we come to this section

  148. that we will think about this capstone

  149. and how glorious it is and how helpful.

  150. James Gisham man takes a completely

  151. different view on revelation than I do.

  152. He was a Greek he taught Greek at

  153. Princeton Seminary and was the founder

  154. of Westminster Seminary after Princeton

  155. Christ and burned

  156. uh in apostasy.

  157. But Dedman Heert wrote this in his

  158. introduction to the New Testament. The

  159. apocalypse according to any right

  160. interpretation is a vision of final

  161. triumph.

  162. That triumph is a triumph of Christ.

  163. Behind all the lurid imagery of the

  164. book, behind the battles and the woes

  165. and behind the glories of God's people

  166. stands the figure of the Savior. If you

  167. interpret Revelation and you're not

  168. looking at Jesus, you're looking in the

  169. wrong place. You want to I want to know

  170. what the sixth seal was. I want to know

  171. what the seventh trumpet is. You get it

  172. all distracted and all that stuff. It's

  173. a revelation of Jesus Christ.

  174. It helps us to see him

  175. in a way we need to see him.

  176. And man understood that with him the

  177. book began and with him too it ends. He

  178. is the same who lived the life of mercy

  179. and glory on earth. The same who died

  180. for our sins on the cross. To the lamb

  181. all power is given. All power in heaven

  182. and on earth. By him all enemies are

  183. conquered. By him the whole earth will

  184. be judged. To those who bear the mark of

  185. the beast. He's the avenger. And to the

  186. church he is the everliving savior.

  187. Thank you Dr. Machan. That was great.

  188. So, we've seen a Menanite and a

  189. Presbyterian.

  190. Now, we'll look at a Baptist.

  191. This is William Graham Scroggy, a

  192. tremendous Bible scholar in Britain, a

  193. Baptist Bible scholar.

  194. And he talks about the values

  195. of the book of Revelation.

  196. And he has three great statements about

  197. it. Number one, it's the unveiling of

  198. the Lord Jesus Christ. It's an unveiling

  199. of the Lord Jesus Christ. You want to

  200. know Jesus better, you love Jesus, you

  201. want to know more about him, study the

  202. book of Revelation. Don't get occupied

  203. about the Antichrist or the false

  204. prophet or the two witnesses or the

  205. Pet. It's a book of who Jesus is.

  206. Fact, the whole Bible's about Jesus,

  207. right?

  208. If you get in the weeds about other

  209. stuff, you're not reading the Bible

  210. properly. The volume, the book, it's

  211. written to be to do your will, oh God.

  212. So, William Graham Scrabby Kraggi, who's

  213. a tremendous outliner,

  214. said it's an unveiling of the Lord Jesus

  215. Christ. Second point he had was it's an

  216. inspiration to the faithful in the

  217. present.

  218. in the present.

  219. And the whole point of all this future

  220. stuff is that the churches, the seven

  221. churches, and they represent all

  222. churches of this era in our present

  223. might be living for the Lord.

  224. And what a blessed thought that is.

  225. And uh number three, it's a revelation

  226. of the issue of history.

  227. It's a revelation of the is issue of

  228. history.

  229. Those are wonderful tr and who's in

  230. charge? Who's going to win?

  231. It's going to be the devil.

  232. So hopefully this has helped. Now you

  233. say, "Pastor, already I feel like I'm

  234. I've jumped in the deep end of the

  235. theological pool and I'm drowning.

  236. I I came for the kiddie pool and now I'm

  237. an overmate."

  238. Well, all of us are when we're studying

  239. this book, right?

  240. But I trust the 40 Sundays that we've

  241. spending here on the seven churches have

  242. been well spent for us and a joy even

  243. though we don't understand it all.

  244. Even though we

  245. can't grasp it all, even though there

  246. are others that do better than we do in

  247. understanding this book, if we get

  248. anything, that's good.

  249. Uh my sister's grandkids take swimming

  250. lessons and they do they do competition

  251. over here in Athens and they're in the

  252. pool over there going back and forth.

  253. One of them went there how many times?

  254. 40 times back and forth

  255. just racing across that pool and we go

  256. we've gone to see them. I remember when

  257. I was younger two times across was about

  258. all I could do.

  259. That was my best

  260. and then I was ready to stop.

  261. And so some of us when we study

  262. Revelation for whatever reason it's a

  263. little harder for us to enjoy it the way

  264. others do. But I still enjoyed my two

  265. times across

  266. and may we enjoy our time here.

  267. So the whole message of the whole book

  268. is for the churches. That's what it says

  269. in verse 16.

  270. Now I've said this before, I'm going to

  271. say it again. Only Revelation chapters 2

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  272. and three are about the churches, but

  273. the whole book of Revelation is for the

  274. churches. You get that distinction?

  275. Revelation 2 and three are about the

  276. churches.

  277. seven different churches, what they

  278. should be doing, what they shouldn't be

  279. doing. But the whole book of Revelation

  280. is for the churches.

  281. Look at verse 16. I Jesus have sent my

  282. angel to testify to you these things in

  283. the churches. You need to know about all

  284. this,

  285. not just some of it.

  286. So the message of all the whole book is

  287. for the churches. Now that means

  288. churches shouldn't ignore it just

  289. because they don't understand it or

  290. don't like it.

  291. I've had people say, "I don't read the

  292. book of Revelation. Scares me to death."

  293. I understand that. It's kind of scary.

  294. >> But what? You need it. I need it.

  295. You know, there's parts of the Bible

  296. that's very comforting and there's other

  297. parts of the Bible is very disturbing,

  298. but we need it all.

  299. You don't just take medicine that tastes

  300. good.

  301. Some of the medicine you take doesn't

  302. taste good, but you take it anyway,

  303. right? Cuz you need it.

  304. And some of those pills they give you, I

  305. cut in half because I can't I can't take

  306. the whole pill at the same time. I got a

  307. pill cutter and I use it

  308. or I just choke them.

  309. And sometimes you feel like you're

  310. choking or gagging when we're studying

  311. this book. I can't get it down. I can't

  312. get these truths. There's just so much

  313. here.

  314. But this is not a book for any church or

  315. any Christian to neglect, ignore, or

  316. avoid.

  317. It's written to us because we need it.

  318. Without it, we would be less than the

  319. Lord wants us to be.

  320. And so verse 19 is very important. If

  321. any man take away from the words of this

  322. book, God will take away his part from

  323. the tree of life. And I'm not trying to

  324. cut parts out of the revelation, but

  325. neither do I want to just not deal with

  326. them even if I have a hard time

  327. understanding.

  328. I do believe in humility.

  329. John Calvin didn't preach on Revelation.

  330. He because you couldn't he didn't have a

  331. clue what it was saying. John Cloud was

  332. a tremendous Bible schol. He just left

  333. that part out. I've got his other great

  334. commentaries. He didn't try.

  335. But we may not be ready to write a

  336. commentary on Revelation, but we ought

  337. to at least hear it as much as we can

  338. and read it as much as we can.

  339. Now, let's go back to what he says. Uh

  340. he says in 16, I Jesus have sent my

  341. angel to testify to you in these things

  342. in the churches. I'm the root and

  343. offspring of David. That goes back to

  344. the Old Testament thousand years before

  345. John and the bright and morning star.

  346. And he's very very clear about this of

  347. our responsibilities.

  348. And uh so may we keep these blessed

  349. words. May we heed them. May we be about

  350. them.

  351. We need to know Jesus and his present

  352. glory, his former glory, and his future

  353. glory. That we don't have the right

  354. picture if we don't.

  355. Henry Morris said of this section, it's

  356. foundation to know him. That's Jesus as

  357. maker. It's salvational to know him as

  358. redeemer. And it's motivational to know

  359. him as coming king.

  360. So it's foundational to know him as

  361. maker. It's salvational to know him as

  362. redeemer. And it's motivational to know

  363. him as coming king. And he is coming.

  364. He's coming as king of kings and lord of

  365. lords.

  366. Carpenter of Nazareth is the creator

  367. of the universe.

  368. The baby of Bethlehem

  369. is the king

  370. of kings.

  371. The crucified Jesus is risen, ascending.

  372. Someday

  373. he'll come.

  374. Someday

  375. history will merge into eternity.

  376. And once it does,

  377. history as we know it will be over.

  378. So, this book needs to be read, studied,

  379. pondered, and I'm going to ask this

  380. question seriously to everybody here.

  381. I'm not going to ask for a raising of

  382. hands.

  383. How many have read the book

  384. all the way through?

  385. How many have read it twice?

  386. How many have given up but said, "I'm

  387. going to read it again even though I

  388. didn't understand it the first two times

  389. through."

  390. You know, you ask these questions, it's

  391. important, right?

  392. And you get a little more every time you

  393. read it.

  394. This book is to be heard. This book is

  395. to be kept. And uh it's very very

  396. important. There's a blessing in it. In

  397. chapter 1 verse three, hold your place

  398. here. It tells you at the beginning,

  399. and this refers to all 22 chapters,

  400. 1:3, blessed is he that reads,

  401. and they that hear the words of this

  402. prophecy, and keep those things which

  403. are written in it, for the time is hand.

  404. Now that hearing and that keeping

  405. that reading and that keep hearing and

  406. that keeping are all present tense.

  407. It refers to repeated

  408. hearing, reading, keeping.

  409. So it's referring to the fact that this

  410. should be on our minds in our hearts on

  411. a regular basis. Read and reread,

  412. heard, kept, applied. Have we heard it?

  413. Have we read it? Have we tried to keep

  414. it?

  415. Now a lot of things we read, we don't

  416. read to remember.

  417. How much did you remember of what you uh

  418. scrolled through your phone on

  419. yesterday?

  420. Probably retained some of it, but a lot

  421. a lot of it came in and it went out.

  422. Came in and it went out.

  423. I don't need to know any more about

  424. that.

  425. I forward recipes to my wife hoping that

  426. she'll cook it.

  427. She gets about 20 a day.

  428. Well, I'm just hinting, you know,

  429. and so, but you know, I don't remember

  430. the recipes. I don't not not doing it

  431. for myself. I'm just Well, yeah, I am,

  432. but not giving her the recipe so that

  433. they'll come back to me, right?

  434. But, um, we're to be re we read it,

  435. we're to hear it, we're to keep it,

  436. we're to apply it.

  437. Now, if you ask me, pastor, what was

  438. that recipe for tomatoes, zucchini, and

  439. and uh um

  440. >> okra is be in there, but it's the other

  441. one. It's the black one. I can't think

  442. of it.

  443. Uh it's a black vegetable that you cut,

  444. >> but is eggplant. Yeah. What is that

  445. recipe? See, I couldn't even remember

  446. the eggplant part. And that's my

  447. favorite part. What is that recipe for

  448. tomatoes and eggplant and whatever the

  449. other one was that I said?

  450. See, I don't remember that. I can't

  451. retain it. And you know why I don't?

  452. It's on it's it's on the recipe. I can

  453. always just look it up.

  454. That's the way my mind works.

  455. But God wants us to retain.

  456. So, if I really read that recipe the way

  457. I should, I not only would read it and

  458. pass it on to my wife, I would go buy

  459. some eggplant. I'd get some tomatoes.

  460. I'd get some zucchini. I'd get all the

  461. other ingredients. And I'd be doing it

  462. myself.

  463. Recipes can be legitimately passed on,

  464. but the book of Revelation is meant to

  465. be what? read, heard, kept.

  466. What an amazing thing.

  467. I love hearing about the lamb's blood.

  468. Why? Cuz that's the church.

  469. I love hearing about the lamb's.

  470. I'm a romantic. I'm kind of bad at it,

  471. but I think I am. Our 45th anniversary

  472. was yesterday.

  473. Yeah.

  474. But for my wife, she's put up with me

  475. for 45 [laughter]

  476. years. She if you believed in making

  477. people saints, she should be made one.

  478. God makes the saints. We don't. But but

  479. I like to think I'm romantic.

  480. But but God's a romantic. The whole

  481. thing's a love story.

  482. The church is the bride,

  483. the bride of Christ.

  484. And the church is the lamb's wife.

  485. That's the opposite of Lot's wife.

  486. Remember Lot's wife?

  487. The angels told her twice not to look

  488. back.

  489. You to get out of this place and get up

  490. and go. Don't look back. She looked

  491. back.

  492. She was looking back at Sodom. She was

  493. involved emotionally with Sodom.

  494. Not a good move.

  495. Do you remember in 1st Samuel 15

  496. 1-22? Don't look at it for time's sake.

  497. Remember, God sent King Saul

  498. on a mission

  499. to slaughter these people. All of them.

  500. No exceptions.

  501. And even their animals. They were to

  502. kill everything.

  503. Cuz these people were especially nasty.

  504. Saul went, he defeated him,

  505. but he kept the best animals.

  506. And Samuel comes and says, and Saul

  507. says, I've I've I've obeyed the voice of

  508. the Lord. And Samuel, prophet Samuel

  509. said, well, what's this bleeding of

  510. sheep in my ears?

  511. Doesn't sound to me like you've obeyed.

  512. You know what? King Saul by that act of

  513. incomplete obedience

  514. lost the throne.

  515. God said that's it.

  516. You still have the position, but you've

  517. lost the power.

  518. We're put somebody else. Somebody else

  519. was David.

  520. [clears throat] Now, the old saying, no

  521. bless.

  522. In other words, if you're royalty, you

  523. got obligations. People in positions of

  524. high authority have high high

  525. expectations of their performances. And

  526. Saul could have done it. He blamed the

  527. people, but it was really him.

  528. He paid a big price. You remember King

  529. David when God put him instead of Saul.

  530. And King David wanted to bring the ark

  531. of God from Shiloh to Jerusalem and

  532. build a temple for God. Ultimately, that

  533. was his plan. And they got the ark

  534. and they put it on an ox cart

  535. and they're hauling it to Jerusalem on

  536. an ox cart. That wasn't the biblical way

  537. the ark was to be carried. It was to be

  538. carried by the Levites with poles

  539. through the rings.

  540. Remember that man? The ar the ox cart

  541. shook and the man put his hand out to

  542. steady it and do God he took his life.

  543. Upset David. Oh, upset him a lot. You

  544. know why? David was doing the right

  545. thing the wrong way. It was right for

  546. him to bring the ark of God to

  547. Jerusalem, but it was wrong to bring it

  548. the way he brought it. You say, "Well,

  549. God's getting picky." No. God is God. He

  550. told him how to do it. He should have

  551. listened to God.

  552. The Levites carry it. Humans carry it.

  553. You don't put it on a cart.

  554. And when it shook,

  555. he put out the man put out his hand and

  556. he touched the ark

  557. and God took his life.

  558. I personally think he would. It doesn't

  559. that doesn't mean he wasn't a saved man,

  560. but it mean he's lost his physical life.

  561. God was teaching not just Saul and King

  562. David.

  563. Leaders are especially held to the

  564. standard of what God says. He means what

  565. he says. He says what he means. And

  566. Revelation 17 says, "Keeps the words of

  567. this book. They're to be kept.

  568. They'll be applied.

  569. Keep the words of this prophecy." And

  570. the word keep is a present active

  571. participle. It's ongoing. This book is

  572. to be read, heard, and kept. Keeping.

  573. Don't be like Saul. Don't be like David.

  574. Don't be selective in your obedience.

  575. Don't be careless about your obedience.

  576. And David said, "We're doing it the

  577. right way this time because we didn't

  578. seek God the right way." He learned

  579. something. God means what he says, says

  580. what he means. And so, we have no room

  581. for uh innovation for God has spoke

  582. clearly spoken.

  583. Um, God likes those that keep his word.

  584. Remember the church in Revelation

    Revelation 3:8–10

  585. 3:8-10.

  586. And what a blessing that is.

  587. So, we're living in a time when it's

  588. kind of hard to be biblical.

  589. We're living in a time when uh those

  590. that are biblical are sticking their

  591. neck out.

  592. John did. He was on the island of

  593. Patmas.

  594. And John certainly wasn't perfect,

  595. but John was not sinless, but he was

  596. seeking to obey the Lord.

  597. Now turn back to Revelation 7 or excuse

  598. me 22 and I want you to look at verse 7.

  599. These are a series of points I just want

  600. to give you before we close. Number one,

  601. the message of the book of Revelation is

  602. distilled in one verse. Verse seven,

  603. behold I come quickly.

  604. Behold, I come quickly. Blessed is he

  605. that keeps the words of the prophecy of

  606. this book. Two, the message of the book

  607. of revelation uh needs to be applied

  608. goes beyond hearing and reading that

  609. starts but the keeping is to go in

  610. there. So it's to be it's we have a

  611. distilled uh statement about the book of

  612. revelation. We have an application. It

  613. is to be applied. Third, the message of

  614. the book of revelation is to be

  615. received.

  616. He says in verse 10, "Seal not the words

  617. of the prophecy of this book, for the

  618. time is at hand. It's to be recorded.

  619. It's to be received. It's to be shared."

  620. And may God help us to do that. God's

  621. not telling you and me everything,

  622. right?

  623. Do the generals tell the privates

  624. everything

  625. about the battle plan?

  626. You know, privates don't know what's

  627. going on.

  628. The private first class people don't

  629. know what's going on. Probably the

  630. sergeants don't know what's going on in

  631. the whole battlefield. They just know

  632. their part. They may know a little bit

  633. beyond their part. But God doesn't tell

  634. everything to everybody, but he has put

  635. it in his word. So, we have access to

  636. it. We know something of what's going on

  637. even if we don't grasp all of it. and we

  638. are to pass it on.

  639. So may God help us. This message is to

  640. be proclaimed. Uh in verse 17, the

  641. spirit and the bride say come.

  642. We're inviting other people to come and

  643. let him hear say come and let him that's

  644. a thirst come. Whoever will let him take

  645. of the water of life freely. These are

  646. very basic things.

  647. The whole book of revelation is not

  648. about the seven churches. But the whole

  649. book of revelation is to be read,

  650. studied, and passed on by the seven

  651. churches, used by the seven churches.

  652. Um,

  653. so let's be sure we do that.

  654. You say, "Pastor, I can't do it. I'm

  655. this is too much for me. I'm going to

  656. fail like David and like Saul." Well,

  657. maybe. But you do the best you can,

  658. right? Ask God for grace.

  659. And God knows our needs.

  660. But the biggest thing is to make sure

  661. we're saved, right? That's this

  662. invitation. The spirit and the bride

  663. say, "Come.

  664. Am I saved? Are my sins under the blood?

  665. Am I a new creation in Christ? If

  666. anyone's in Christ, he's a new creation.

  667. Am I trusting in the blood of Christ for

  668. my salvation?"

  669. has the penalty has been fully paid.

  670. Do I know salvation is not by my

  671. performance, but is it by God's grace?

  672. It's a free gift received by faith.

  673. Do I understand that it takes an

  674. infinite person to pay an infinite

  675. penalty? And I'm not that person. Only

  676. Jesus could.

  677. JC Riyle, an Anglican bishop in the

  678. 1800s, said, "Till men and women are

  679. brought to feel their sinfulness and

  680. need, no real good is ever done to their

  681. souls.

  682. Till a sinner sees himself as God sees

  683. him, he will continue careless and

  684. unmoved."

  685. Very important. I'm not a fingerpointing

  686. fire and brimstone kind of guy in the

  687. sense of trying to emotionally move

  688. people. It's not my personality. But I

  689. will say this, if you're not saved, you

  690. need to be saved. You don't want to wait

  691. another minute.

  692. Jesus has come.

  693. What if he comes before you're saved?

  694. Charles Spurgeon said, "Carnnal men love

  695. the God that they make, but not the God

  696. that made them."

  697. Ever heard people say, "Oh, my God would

  698. never do that.

  699. My God would never be angry at anybody.

  700. My God would never send anybody to hell.

  701. My God would never do that." Well, then

  702. your God's not the God of the Bible.

  703. Your God's an idol that you've made in

  704. your own mind.

  705. You better get rid of that idol and

  706. worship the real God.

  707. Someone said, "We cannot really tell how

  708. crooked our thinking is until we line it

  709. up with a straight edge of scripture."

  710. Ever thought you drew a straight line

  711. and then you put the straight edge on

  712. it. What's the straight anyway?

  713. So God help us.

  714. You will not impact the world by just

  715. going to church.

  716. I believe in going to church. I'm glad

  717. you're here.

  718. But the church is not meant to just

  719. function on Sunday morning with each

  720. other. The church is meant to come

  721. together and worship. That the church is

  722. meant to what? Go and minister.

  723. And so someone said, you will not impact

  724. the world by faithfully going to church.

  725. You will impact the world by faithfully

  726. bringing the church. when you you go out

  727. into the world.

  728. Very important. And in church, we equip

  729. the saints for the work of the ministry.

  730. Right?

  731. Now, if you're not saved, you can't

  732. minister to others because you can't

  733. give others what you don't have.

  734. Many people are trying to save

  735. themselves.

  736. And if I'm just smart enough and good

  737. enough, I'll save myself.

  738. There's a story about a fellow by the

  739. name of Aip Bernstein. I'm sure

  740. everybody's heard this story.

  741. No, I'm sure you haven't.

  742. But this was 1918

  743. and OP Bernstein was sentenced to die by

  744. a Bolevik firing squad.

  745. He happened to be a grandmaster

  746. in chess

  747. and a rather well-known

  748. and Assa Bernstein was moments from

  749. death when an officer recognized him and

  750. offered him a deal.

  751. Play me in chess and if you win the game

  752. of chess, you'll live.

  753. You want a chance to play a chess match.

  754. But Bernstein accepted, played a

  755. flawless game, and walked away uh from

  756. his own execution in 1918 in Odessa.

  757. Why did that man escape execution?

  758. He was a good chess player,

  759. right?

  760. He was a good chess player.

  761. And many think that if I'm just good

  762. enough,

  763. I can get myself out of this this

  764. trouble.

  765. Not by works of righteousness, which

  766. we've done, but according to his grace

  767. and mercy, he saved us.

  768. Jesus was born to die and take your sins

  769. and your hell because you could not save

  770. yourself.

  771. God doesn't have another program.

  772. Our Lord was born to pay for your sins.

  773. And but our God's a righteous God. He's

  774. not all love. He's not going to he's not

  775. going to ignore the fact that people

  776. hate his son who died

  777. for sinners.

  778. RC Sprout said, "A God who's all love,

  779. all grace, all mercy, no sovereignty, no

  780. justice, no holiness, and no wrath is an

  781. idol."

  782. I know a lot of people don't worship in

  783. that.

  784. And none of us will serve the Lord

  785. perfectly,

  786. but we have a perfect God.

  787. Some of you know Elizabeth Elliott, the

  788. wife of a missionary was martyed in the

  789. 50s. She said there's no perfect life,

  790. no perfect job, no perfect childhood, no

  791. perfect marriage, no perfect set of

  792. people who will always do what we expect

  793. them to do. We don't do it, they can't

  794. do it. What we have is a perfect God

  795. who's able to lead us through this

  796. imperfect life with unfailing strength

  797. and incomparable wisdom and infinite

  798. love and confidence.

  799. Um,

  800. don't despise

  801. don't despise churches because they're

  802. small.

  803. Don't despise God's people because

  804. they're not

  805. always the best of the best,

  806. intellect or wealth or anything else.

  807. Uh God has chosen the foolish things to

  808. confound the blind

  809. and the weak things confound the mighty.

  810. First Corinthians is very clear.

  811. The supervisor

  812. was working in a place where they were

  813. making scientific experiments

  814. and the supervisor told this chemist

  815. Stephanie

  816. Bole

  817. to throw away that experiment. That's

  818. useless.

  819. Throw it away. Do something else. That

  820. was her supervisor.

  821. But instead, the chemist tested the uh

  822. the strange cloudy liquid in her lab.

  823. She disobeyed her superior.

  824. That 1965 decision gave the world Kevla,

  825. a fiber five times stronger than steel

  826. that's now used in bulletproof vests.

  827. We get over occupied by people in power

  828. and position and prominence and we let

  829. them control our life.

  830. I'm not saying we should become rebels

  831. on everything. I'm not saying that at

  832. all. We There's times we should listen

  833. to those above us, but not when it comes

  834. with the gospel. Not when it comes with

  835. salvation.

  836. They might be smarter than us, but

  837. they're not smarter than God.

  838. >> [clears throat]

  839. >> May God help us to let know we live in a

  840. sinful world that

  841. doesn't always play fair,

  842. doesn't always see things right.

  843. Can we not be intimidated by those

  844. around us that we think are smarter than

  845. us or more experienced than us? or uh we

  846. we can appreciate who they are and what

  847. they are, but it really comes down to

  848. what's true and what's false.

  849. Charles Goodyear.

  850. You may recognize his name. I'll close

  851. with this.

  852. How many know the name Goodyear?

  853. You hear the name Goodyear, what do you

  854. associate it with? fires.

  855. Do you realize that scientists

  856. experimented on that and people gave

  857. millions and millions of dollars to

  858. discover rubber that could work as

  859. tires?

  860. They weren't make it wasn't happening.

  861. Experiment after experiment showed

  862. promise but was failing. They couldn't

  863. get rubber that was hard enough.

  864. Charles Goodyear became obsessed with

  865. figuring this out.

  866. He and his family lived in poverty so

  867. much that one of his children uh lived

  868. died of malnutrition.

  869. His wife had to take extra jobs while

  870. he's experimented. The man suffered

  871. decades he was working trying this

  872. trying that trying this. And finally he

  873. dropped a piece of it, went on a I think

  874. it was a fireplace or a furnace and

  875. something happened chemically and he

  876. said, "Oh, that's it."

  877. He patented what he found out.

  878. And then the big shots pulled the patent

  879. out from under him. They made millions

  880. and millions and millions of dollars. He

  881. made nothing.

  882. nothing.

  883. And the reason the business Goodyear is

  884. called after his name is not because

  885. they gave him any money. They didn't

  886. even give him money. They just named it

  887. after him because they knew he was the

  888. one that struggled to make the

  889. invention.

  890. The man died poor.

  891. That's our world.

  892. That's not everybody.

  893. Our world is grabbing for things,

  894. jostling for position.

  895. Um, we will not always get fairly dealt

  896. with

  897. by this world.

  898. The church today

  899. has something everybody needs.

  900. Don't be surprised

  901. if we are are treated like the seven

  902. churches were treated in their

  903. community.

  904. Don't be surprised

  905. if we have the same problems that John,

  906. the author of Revelation, the human

  907. author, who was exiled on the island of

  908. Patmas like he was some danger to the

  909. Roman Empire. They treated him like they

  910. later treated Napoleon. Put him on an

  911. island. We can't have him out here the

  912. rest of us.

  913. Don't be surprised at that.

  914. But hear the word of God. rest in his

  915. truth.

  916. Recognize that many of God's messengers

  917. do not match up to some of the other

  918. people that are teaching different

  919. things as far as intellect or looks or

  920. or wealth. That's not the program.

  921. God has chosen the weak things of the

  922. world to confound the mighty.

  923. That's the program

  924. and that's the church.

  925. Not many wise, not many mighty are

  926. called.

  927. Call some of them.

  928. Probably does call some of them to

  929. salvation. But God is in the business.

  930. The same God that sent Jesus to the

  931. cross and calls the lamb to be slain.

  932. Do you remember the first time John

  933. heard about Jesus being the lamb? I'm

  934. going to close with this. The third time

  935. I said I'm going to close, right?

  936. Remember

  937. what John the Baptist said

  938. and John heard it and was saved because

  939. of it. Behold the lamb of God that takes

  940. away the sin

  941. of

  942. John as a young man heard that and began

  943. to follow Jesus.

  944. Now it's 60 years later,

  945. a lot later, 65 years later,

  946. and John again encounters

  947. the lamb.

  948. Only he encounters the lamb in heaven,

  949. not in the Jordan River, not on the

  950. cross of Calvary,

  951. that in the third heaven.

  952. And he hears the hymns of heaven,

  953. worthy,

  954. receive glory

  955. and honor. You have redeemed us to God

  956. by your blood and of every kindred,

  957. tongue, people, and nation. This is of

  958. universal significance,

  959. not just among people, but among angels

  960. that celebrate it even though it wasn't

  961. for them.

  962. That's the book of Revelation.

  963. That's our savior.

  964. That's our privilege to be in on this.

  965. Father, we thank you for what we've

  966. looked at today. Praise you for

  967. our lessons on the seven churches.

  968. We rejoice

  969. in our savior

  970. and we pray for his return.

  971. And we say even come Lord Jesus. Amen.
