  1. looking at the Lord God of the Bible and

  2. Abraham.

  3. And this was 4,000 years ago

  4. when this event happened,

  5. recorded in the Bible

  6. and repeated in the New Testament 2,000

  7. years ago.

  8. And when God says something once, he

  9. means it. when he says it several times,

  10. he really means it. [clears throat]

  11. There's special texts in the Bible that

  12. are repeated in different places.

  13. They're that significant.

  14. And this is one of them. This particular

  15. verse.

  16. Now, some of you know the context here,

  17. some of you do not.

  18. But I want to focus right now just for

  19. this moment. We're talking about Abraham

  20. or at this time Abraham.

  21. He wasn't Abraham yet. He had no

  22. children.

  23. Been married a long time, no kids.

  24. So Abraham wasn't a Ara wasn't Abraham

  25. yet.

  26. But here in verse six, it says,

  27. "Responding to God's revelation and

  28. promise,

  29. and he believed

  30. in the Lord,

  31. and he, that's the Lord,

  32. counted it to him

  33. for righteousness."

  34. That's our focus

  35. this verse.

  36. If this verse is new to you, we're glad

  37. that we can introduce it to you. If it's

  38. old to you,

  39. you still need to look at it again

  40. because it's extremely important

  41. theologically.

  42. It's extremely important spiritually.

  43. And that's where we are today.

  44. For 49 plus years,

  45. I've been doing book studies on the

  46. Bible.

  47. Usually in the Sunday evening and

  48. Wednesday Bible study, I would do Old

  49. Testament and Sunday morning New

  50. Testament.

  51. For all those years, we usually most of

  52. my ministry has been doing book studies

  53. where you start at the beginning and

  54. just keep going till you're at the end.

  55. Whether it's a whether it's a couple

  56. months or a couple years, wherever it

  57. is,

  58. I believe in that kind of Bible study.

  59. It's been a blessing to me to do it. It

  60. forces you to study things you wouldn't

  61. study or preach things you wouldn't

  62. preach on and get the whole council of

  63. God.

  64. But after 49 years, I think it's time

  65. for a break.

  66. So, for a little while, we're going to

  67. do something else.

  68. Uh, I don't know exactly what to call

  69. this particular series.

  70. Great text from the Old Testament.

  71. Great text from the New Testament.

  72. I'm struggling with just what should I

  73. call this particular series.

  74. But I knew I do know verses like Genesis

    Genesis 15:6

  75. 15:6 should soak into our souls.

  76. This is extremely important

  77. everybody here to let this verse and the

  78. truth of this verse soak into

  79. your souls.

  80. And many people, even Christians, live

  81. in the New Testament and are almost

  82. totally ignorant of the Old Testament.

  83. They don't read it. They don't study it.

  84. And many preachers rarely preach from

  85. it.

  86. Uh that's a big mistake. We need to know

  87. the whole council of God.

  88. And so what I'm looking at this morning,

  89. I've decided instead of calling it a

  90. great text from the Old Testament, I

  91. want to go a little broader than that

  92. just to help us put this into

  93. perspective.

  94. Most of us know that Moses was the

  95. editor of Genesis and the author of

  96. Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and

  97. Deuteronomy.

  98. Genesis recording things that happened

  99. before Moses was born.

  100. But the the material was there in the

  101. aid sections. These are the generations

  102. of the different divisions of writings

  103. that came down to him. So Moses is the

  104. editor of Genesis.

  105. But Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and

  106. Deuteronomy, he was the author of those.

  107. I mean, I know God was the author, but

  108. Moses was the one God was using for all

  109. five things.

  110. And these five books of the Bible are

  111. often called the penetuk.

  112. They're the five books.

  113. And if we really want to understand

  114. what's going on with these five first

  115. five books of the Bible,

  116. some of them you some of you may never

  117. have read one or maybe when you got to

  118. Leviticus you bailed out.

  119. But these first five books of the Bible

  120. I'm going to call foundational.

  121. They're the foundation

  122. for the rest of holy scripture.

  123. Now, if you buy a house, you better look

  124. at the foundation.

  125. I remember we were looking at a house

  126. and I like the house a lot. We were

  127. thinking about buying it before we

  128. bought the house we live in and I went

  129. downstairs and the foundation did not

  130. look good at all.

  131. That was a deal breaker for me. I didn't

  132. want to get into that.

  133. And a little later, we were look

  134. shopping for another house. When my

  135. mother-in-law came to live with us, we

  136. were thinking about buying a house

  137. instead of just having her move in with

  138. us. And then we were looking at another

  139. house and the foundation didn't look

  140. good. I don't know much about buying

  141. houses, but I know one thing. I don't

  142. want to buy a headache.

  143. I don't want to buy a money pit.

  144. So, the foundation is important when it

  145. comes to houses and it's it's very

  146. important when it comes to the Bible

  147. study.

  148. Now when it comes to the foundation of

  149. the church, it says no other foundation

  150. can be laid than that which is laid,

  151. which is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is

  152. the foundation of the church. If you

  153. don't if you're not building on him, if

  154. your church isn't building on him,

  155. you're not on a foundation.

  156. He's the foundation of the church. But

  157. the penetitute, the first five books of

  158. the Bible are the foundation of the

  159. Bible. So Jesus is the foundation of the

  160. church, but the penet is the foundation

  161. of the Bible. God revealed that first

  162. and God's built on that ever since.

  163. The New Testament talks about Moses and

  164. the prophets. Why? Because Moses was the

  165. first human writer of the inspired word

  166. of God.

  167. that we have in our Bible.

  168. So

  169. I hope that this is helpful helpful.

  170. This is foundational. [clears throat]

  171. Many people never ever look at the

  172. foundation enough. They don't look

  173. closely enough.

  174. They're not they're not understanding

  175. the Bible because they spend all their

  176. time in the New Testament and very

  177. little time in the Old Testament other

  178. than the Psalms. And all of it's

  179. important, but you you

  180. got to spend time on it.

  181. God wrote the Bible. He knows what he's

  182. doing.

  183. So,

  184. let's make uh let's let's make a

  185. decision for 2006

  186. 2000. No, that's too late. Let's make a

  187. decision for 2026.

  188. I'm going to read through

  189. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and

  190. Deuteronomy. I'm going to examine the

  191. foundation of the Bible.

  192. I'm going to at least do that.

  193. And that's that's a that's a challenge.

  194. Personally think it's good challenge to

  195. try to read through the Bible, the whole

  196. Bible in a year. You can do it. It's

  197. some of us have done it many times. But

  198. we want to read the Bible. We want the

  199. Bible to read us. It's not how fast you

  200. go, but it's important.

  201. So in this series of messages, I'm not

  202. going to go verse by verse. I'm praying

  203. that you'll go verse by verse in your

  204. Bible reading as your pastor for 2026

  205. that you'd pick out the penetitute and

  206. get a good foundation for this next

  207. year. But for my message series, I'm not

  208. going to preach through Genesis. That

  209. takes a long time. We've done it in this

  210. church three I think three times since

  211. then

  212. and we've taught Exodus, Leviticus,

  213. Numbers, and Deuteronomy here.

  214. But what I'm doing in this series is

  215. I hate to use a food illustration since

  216. Thanksgiving. We're all still too full

  217. from that. But have you ever been to a

  218. buffet?

  219. I I trust you have.

  220. You might have been at a buffet at

  221. Myrtle Beach. They got some seafood

  222. buffets there.

  223. I'd name names, but I won't.

  224. If you go to Amish country in

  225. Pennsylvania, there's the Shady Maple

  226. Buffet, Amish restaurant. It It's 200

  227. foot buffet.

  228. 200 f feet of buffet.

  229. Cost you 20 bucks. But so don't eat for

  230. two days before you go.

  231. >> You don't eat for two days after eating,

  232. >> right?

  233. But what what is the strategy if you do

  234. a buffet

  235. having some experience in this.

  236. What is a strategy if you go to a

  237. seafood buffet or Amish buffet or

  238. Chinese buffet or salad buffet? I've

  239. been to a salad buffet in Florida.

  240. It's all salad. Different kinds of

  241. salad.

  242. You take it. That was great. They went

  243. out of business, but wish they'd stayed

  244. in business.

  245. I'll tell you what I do when I go to a

  246. buffet. I stand back all the other

  247. people and I look,

  248. I observe. I don't take anything. I go

  249. through everything and oh yeah, I want

  250. some of that. I don't want that. What's

  251. is there anything better? I I look

  252. I survey.

  253. I don't even take my plate with me. I

  254. just serve

  255. and then

  256. I start shopping for food.

  257. So what I'm doing is I'm I've surveyed

  258. some of these books and I'm I it's like

  259. a buffet. I'm just I'm not going to

  260. teach the whole book. I'm going to dip

  261. into it

  262. which I think is important places for me

  263. and for you.

  264. So I hope that that helps you.

  265. Now um

  266. this is important.

  267. So, let's go back to Genesis 15 and

  268. let's uh read a little of the text now

  269. and we'll get started.

  270. after these things. after these things

  271. is after

  272. Lot got captured and carried off

  273. and Lot was living in Sodom and Abraham

  274. and his friends

  275. attacked the people who carried them

  276. off, rescued everybody

  277. and they brought back

  278. all the stuff that was stolen and all

  279. the people that were kidnapped.

  280. And in chapter 14,

  281. Abraham is confronted with a couple of

  282. things. Melchisedc

  283. and he gives a tenth of everything to

  284. Melkisedc

  285. where the idea of tithing which is an

  286. Old Testament concept is very clearly

  287. referred to.

  288. So he gives a tenth of the spoils to

  289. Melkisedc. And in chapter 14, the king

  290. of Sodom comes out

  291. and uh the king of Sodom and says um

  292. um give me the people

  293. and you can have all the stuff.

  294. Cuz you see the king of Sodom and four

  295. other kings just got whipped in battle.

  296. And Abraham with his friends, 400 men

  297. plus, they did what all those kings

  298. couldn't do.

  299. So the king of Sodom knew that he owed

  300. Abraham big time.

  301. So he said, "I want my people back.

  302. Thank you. Thank you for getting my

  303. people,

  304. but [clears throat] you can have all the

  305. stuff.

  306. You risked your life. You deserved it."

  307. What's Abraham's answer?

  308. Those of you that know chapter 14,

  309. he's basically saying, "I am not taking

  310. anything from

  311. not a shoel.

  312. I'm not taking anything

  313. except for the people who went with me

  314. that aren't in my family, the other

  315. neighbors that went with me in this

  316. battle. You give them their share.

  317. I'm not speaking for them.

  318. But as for me,

  319. nothing.

  320. interesting uh conversation that they

  321. have in that section. And Abraham was

  322. very clear. There's no way I'm giving

  323. you bragging rights and you're saying I

  324. made Abraham rich. I don't want your

  325. money. Don't want your stuff.

  326. God will take care of me.

  327. Now, that was a pretty big thing.

  328. Abraham gave 10% to MelkiseDC, who was a

  329. king priest out of worship. Thank you,

  330. God, for getting me through this alive

  331. and rescuing my nephew lot. And then he

  332. gave all the other stuff to the people

  333. there that he rescued and except for the

  334. other people that went with him. How

  335. much did he get? Zero. He got nothing.

  336. He got nothing financially.

  337. Risk his life.

  338. He got nothing.

  339. Now, after you make a decision like

  340. that,

  341. sometimes you have I think you obviously

  342. did the right thing, but sometimes you

  343. might have a little second guess.

  344. So, that's where chapter 15 comes.

  345. After these things, and that's the

  346. things I just talked about,

  347. after these things, the word of the Lord

  348. came to Abraham in a vision,

  349. saying, "Fear not, Abraham.

  350. I am your shield and your exceedingly

  351. great reward."

  352. You did the right thing. You don't need

  353. their money. We don't want their money.

  354. you did the right thing in rescuing your

  355. nephew and you did your right thing in

  356. uh uh uh in not taking the money.

  357. So that's the background God is saying,

  358. "I'm enough. I'm your shield. I'm your

  359. protector and I'm your reward. I'm your

  360. provider. You got me. You don't need

  361. it."

  362. Now Abraham hears that and Abraham

  363. remembers something.

  364. I've been [clears throat] waiting on a

  365. kid for 10 years.

  366. I have no children.

  367. I have no heirs.

  368. So even if I keep all the stuff, even if

  369. I have all this stuff and you're

  370. providing for me, there's nobody to give

  371. it to when I'm gone.

  372. So he Abram said,"Lord God, what will

  373. you give me seeing I go childless and

  374. the heir of my house is this Eleazar of

  375. Damascus?" Now Eleazar was one of

  376. Abraham's servants, but he wasn't his

  377. son.

  378. So Abraham thinks, I don't have any

  379. children to give anything to.

  380. So, I'm doing the right thing and you're

  381. going to provide for me and you're going

  382. to protect me, but still I don't have an

  383. heir.

  384. Some of you may be in that condition

  385. and that's okay. That's where Abraham

  386. was. That's not a terrible place.

  387. And Abraham said, "Behold, to me, you've

  388. given no seed. I'm waiting, Lord.

  389. When's the baby going to show up?

  390. And he's going back to Genesis 12.

  391. In you all nations of the earth will be

  392. blessed. Well,

  393. I'm going to make you a great nation. I

  394. don't have a nation. I don't even have a

  395. one child.

  396. And behold,

  397. one born in my house is my heir.

  398. So, you promised I got the promise

  399. from you and that's all I got. The

  400. promise.

  401. Have you ever lent people money and they

  402. promise you to pay you back, but that's

  403. all you get is the promise?

  404. Yeah, they promise. They never get

  405. around to paying. And so, what Abraham's

  406. doing here, he's just reminding God of

  407. the situation and how much time has

  408. passed.

  409. And here's God's answer. Behold, the

  410. word of the Lord came to him, saying,

  411. "This is not going to be your heir.

  412. But he that will come forth out of your

  413. own loins shall be your heir."

  414. I know you're old. I know your wife's

  415. old, but you're going to have a baby.

  416. Now, God doesn't mention his wife here,

  417. and that was something. And Abraham just

  418. assumed, "Oh,

  419. well, you promises to be, but maybe not

  420. Sarah's going to be involved, so he gets

  421. into trouble in chapter 16."

  422. And God has to switch it. No, if I

  423. promised you something, I promised your

  424. wife, too.

  425. But anyway, God says in verse four,

  426. "Behold, the word of the Lord came to

  427. him, saying, "This will not be your

  428. heir, but he that'll come forth out of

  429. your own loin shall be your heir." And

  430. he brought him forth abroad and said,

  431. 'Look now toward heaven and count the

  432. stars if you be able and number them.

  433. And he said, "So shall your seed be.

  434. You're worried about not having any

  435. kids. Listen, you're going to have

  436. millions of descendants."

  437. And he believed in the Lord. There's our

  438. text. What did he believe? He believed

  439. what God said

  440. and he that's the Lord counted it to him

  441. for righteousness.

  442. Now this text

  443. is incredibly

  444. important.

  445. It's so important. It's foundational

  446. and it's actually found in three

  447. different verses in the New Testament in

  448. three different books.

  449. Why I say it's foundation.

  450. So in three different places at least

  451. this verse is referred to

  452. and it's explicitly expounded and

  453. applied

  454. in the New Testament.

  455. So the important thing for us is to look

  456. at this verse and know it well. You

  457. can't know the New Testament. You can't

  458. know the theology of the New Testament

  459. if you don't know this section.

  460. It's just kind of vague.

  461. Now,

  462. let's think about this.

  463. First, I have three points this morning.

  464. If I know this in its context and in its

  465. exposition and application in the Old

  466. Testament, God help me when I read it to

  467. apply it to the New Testament.

  468. What's it mean? What's it mean? He

  469. believed in the Lord and he the Lord

  470. counted it to him for righteousness.

  471. What does it mean? It means what it

  472. meant.

  473. Even when it's recorded in the New

  474. Testament, it means what it meant.

  475. And there's an expansion obviously, but

  476. the expansion does not diminish the

  477. original meaning. It means what it

  478. meant. The New Testament writers and

  479. 21st century pastors

  480. have to understand it means what it

  481. meant.

  482. That's true of the US Constitution,

  483. right?

  484. What does the Constitution mean?

  485. It means the same thing your deed to

  486. your house means. It means what it

  487. meant.

  488. what was the author's original intention

  489. and so quite important

  490. uh you can't change it.

  491. You there's people that want to change

  492. it. They want to have a living

  493. interpretation of the constitution

  494. always be changing it which means you

  495. have no constitution just the opinion of

  496. who's doing stuff

  497. >> at the time. Would you want your house

  498. deed to be interpreted that way? There's

  499. a living interpretation

  500. of your deed to your house.

  501. You're not the only one that can live.

  502. You can't do that for your OU or Hawking

  503. College transcript.

  504. I know it says a D, but it means an A.

  505. No,

  506. sorry. It's your transcript. It means

  507. what [snorts] it meant.

  508. you flagged that course. You're

  509. embarrassed about it, but now the

  510. employer finds out you flagged the

  511. court.

  512. So, first three points in our message.

  513. Number one, what it meant originally to

  514. Abraham

  515. is recorded in the book of Genesis. What

  516. it meant originally to Abraham is

  517. recorded in the book of Genesis. Number

  518. two, how is it used in the New Testament

  519. 2,000 years later? And number three, why

  520. is it important for you and me today?

  521. That's where we're going in the time.

  522. So, there's so much backstory here. I

  523. can't even get to all the backstory,

  524. but what God did to res in his response

  525. to Abraham's question is very important.

  526. Having questions and having facts

  527. are not incompatible with faith.

  528. Abraham asks a legitimate question and

  529. God gives him a wonderful answer.

  530. Now there's a broader perspective here.

  531. Uh

  532. I am so thankful for this and I want to

  533. just think about this with you just for

  534. a moment.

  535. The banishment from the Garden of Eden

  536. was not God's final word to mankind.

  537. The day you eat of it, you'll die.

  538. That's it. No more history. No more

  539. human history.

  540. The banishment from the Garden of Eden

  541. was not God's final word to man. God the

  542. creator promised he'd bruise the

  543. serpent's head. And even though the

  544. serpent would bruise, the woman's seed's

  545. healed.

  546. worldwide judgment at Noah's flood was

  547. not the final word from the creator

  548. could have been.

  549. It wasn't.

  550. So, exile from the Garden of Eden was

  551. not God's final word, although he said,

  552. "In the day you eat, you'll die." Uh,

  553. extermination by the flood was not God's

  554. final word, although only eight people

  555. survived.

  556. and segregation by linguistic barriers

  557. at the Tower of Babel was not God's

  558. final word. None of those were God's

  559. final answer. None of those were meant

  560. to be the ultimate fix of the sin

  561. problem.

  562. Ratification of the Abrahamic covenant

  563. is where we come to God's answer

  564. to the sin problem.

  565. the ultimate answer to the sin problem.

  566. A baby's born. God incarnate becomes a

  567. savior.

  568. And when we see this verse in the New

  569. Testament, we're realizing this is not

  570. an offthe cuff thing. This was planned

  571. before the foundation of the world and

  572. known 4,000 years ago.

  573. So the fresh beginning was not now

  574. you're out of the garden, the sweat of

  575. your brow, you got to uh eat of of the

  576. ground and you're going to have trouble

  577. in childbirth.

  578. That wasn't a new that was a new start

  579. and it was not the ultimate new start.

  580. Neither was Noah's flood. We're down to

  581. eight now. New start. Neither was the

  582. scattering at the Tower of Babel.

  583. It's the [clears throat] Abraham

  584. is the new star.

  585. All the others

  586. were just to get us to here.

  587. All the rest of the Bible comes off of

  588. us.

  589. I'm thankful for this new story

  590. because Jesus is the ultimate seed of

  591. Abraham

  592. in which all the earth will be blessed.

  593. one writer on this. It's I have a large

  594. volume in my library that deals with Old

  595. Testament and the New Testament. And

  596. this writer said, "He represents God's

  597. fresh beginning with the fallen world,

  598. the display of God's mercy in God's

  599. judgment. Abraham is one of the ungodly

  600. whom God chose as a vehicle for his

  601. saving purpose. a solitary, weak, and

  602. defenseless individual who's made so by

  603. the divine judgment on the human

  604. unedited

  605. human race. The childless, homeless,

  606. wandering Abraham is the antithesis of

  607. Adam who enjoyed the security and

  608. fruitfulness of the garden. In this

  609. fallen and frail figure, God the creator

  610. takes up a fresh his a fresh surprising

  611. work of blessing the world which now

  612. stands under the curse.

  613. So what a wonderful new start this is. I

  614. hope you see Genesis that way. Do you

  615. see this as a fresh start?

  616. The the ultimate fresh start.

  617. Now with that, let's see how this is

  618. used in the New Testament.

  619. Go with me to Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  620. Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  621. Paul uses it.

  622. Remember chapters 1:3 of Romans. None

  623. righteous know not one. All have sinned

  624. come short of the glory of God. By the

  625. deeds of the law, will no flesh be

  626. justified in God's sight? For by the

  627. laws and knowledge of sin, the ten

  628. commandments aren't the answer.

  629. Everybody's rejected creation. Everybody

  630. fails when they try to obey the Bible.

  631. And the answer is, of course,

  632. in verse 21 of chapter 3. But now the

  633. righteousness of God apart from the law

  634. is manifested, being witnessed by the

  635. law and the prophets, even the

  636. righteousness of God, which is by faith

  637. of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all

  638. them that believe. There's no

  639. difference. For all have sinned and are

  640. come short of the glory of God, being

  641. justified or declared righteous freely

  642. by his grace through the redemption

  643. that's in Christ Jesus,

  644. whom God has set forth to be

  645. propitiation through faith in his blood,

  646. to declare his righteousness for the

  647. remission of sins that are passed, to

  648. declare, I say at this time, his

  649. righteousness, that he might be just and

  650. the justifier of him who what? Believes

  651. in Jesus. Now, slip down to chapter

  652. four. uh Paul of chapter 4 of Romans,

  653. Paul says, "How was the first Jew saved

  654. and the most famous Jew saved?

  655. Not by works,

  656. but by faith."

  657. Not by works that they were doing for

  658. God, but by faith in what God has said.

  659. So in Romans chapter 4, it says, "What

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  660. shall we say then that Abraham our

  661. father is pertaining to the flesh has

  662. found? For if Abraham were justified by

  663. works, he has something of which to

  664. glory. but not before God. What says the

  665. scripture? There's our verse. Paul's

  666. using it.

  667. Paul's applying it to the legalist of

  668. his day.

  669. Abraham believed God and it was counted

  670. to him for righteousness. Now to him

  671. that works is the reward not reckoned of

  672. grace but of debt. But to him that works

  673. not, but believeth on him that justifies

  674. the ungodly, his faith is counted for

  675. righteousness.

  676. What does Genesis say? Abraham believed

  677. God and he counted it to him for

  678. righteousness.

  679. It's an interesting that same word

  680. counted is used in Genesis when uh

  681. when Judah

  682. saw his daughter-in-law

  683. thought she was a prostitute.

  684. It says he counted her

  685. of prostitute.

  686. He didn't know, oh, that's my

  687. daughter-in-law in disguise.

  688. She had available.

  689. So, he took one look at her and how she

  690. was dressed and he said, there's a

  691. prostitute.

  692. He counted her a prostitute.

  693. And it's the same word here where God

  694. counts us. How does God look at you,

  695. Christian?

  696. Is he looking at all your sins you've

  697. done? And there's Bill Hixon. There's a

  698. there's a hard to draw to.

  699. No, he looks upon me the way he looks on

  700. Jesus.

  701. Jesus's righteousness is put to my

  702. account.

  703. And so Paul is arguing here that the

  704. first Jew, Abraham, and the best Jew,

  705. David,

  706. were justified by faith and not by

  707. works. That's his argument.

  708. Of course, David, he's the big sinner

  709. with his adultery and murder.

  710. He didn't have any righteousness that he

  711. could brag about too much after that.

  712. And so he says the best, the first Jew

  713. and the best Jew. He's getting to David

  714. in verse six.

  715. Even as David describes the blessedness

  716. of the man unto whom God imputes

  717. righteousness apart from one

  718. saying, "Blessed are they whose

  719. iniquities are forgiven and whose sins

  720. are covered. Blessed is the man to whom

  721. the Lord will not impute sin." He's

  722. quoting what? Psalm 32. Comes this

  723. blessedness verse 9. on the circumcision

  724. only or uncircumcision also. For we say

  725. that faith was reckoned to Abraham for

  726. righteousness. That's our section. He

  727. was counted to him righteous. How was it

  728. reckoned? When he was in circumcision or

  729. uncircumcision. Abraham was not

  730. circumcised in Genesis 15. He's not

  731. circumcised till Genesis 17.

  732. Years later,

  733. God pronounced him righteous.

  734. before he was circumcised.

  735. It's very important because some people

  736. trust in religious rights.

  737. I'm baptized so I'm going to heaven.

  738. That's no different than saying I'm

  739. circumcised. I'm going to heaven.

  740. Religious rights cannot save you. Even

  741. if they're God-given and even if there's

  742. something you should do.

  743. You're not baptized. I hope you're not.

  744. I hope you get baptized. I'd be glad to

  745. baptize you if you know the Lord, but

  746. prison won't save any more in

  747. circumcision. He said,

  748. still something you should do,

  749. but it won't save you.

  750. So God took circumcision seriously.

  751. Moses got in trouble not circumcising

  752. his son.

  753. Talking the Old Testament,

  754. but circumcision doesn't save. Religious

  755. rights don't save. And there were people

  756. in Paul's day that were thinking it was.

  757. He says, "No, no, that's not the

  758. program. The first Jew and the greatest

  759. Jew were saved by grace through faith,

  760. not through religious rights."

  761. Now, if you want to impress an American

  762. about something, uh, that's not George

  763. Washington. That's not Abraham Lincoln.

  764. That's what we're dealing with here,

  765. right?

  766. That's not Abraham. That's not David.

  767. So that's where he's at. That's in the

  768. book of Romans. So Paul quotes our text,

  769. the major part of his theology. Turn to

  770. Galatians chapter 3. We'll see it

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  771. appearing in Paul's letter to the

  772. Galatians.

  773. Galatians chapter 3

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  774. and verse 6.

  775. And I don't have time to teach all this,

  776. but Paul gives three arguments for the

  777. gospel of grace. The autobiographical

  778. argument is in chapter 1. The

  779. theological argument is chap chapter 1

  780. and two. The theological argument is

  781. three and four. And the practical

  782. argument is five and six. Paul has got

  783. an airtight argument for the gospel of

  784. grace rather than the Judaizers version.

  785. And so you need to know the Bible when

  786. you get to the uh biblical argument or

  787. the theological argument. And Paul says

  788. in uh chapter 3 verse 6, even as Abraham

  789. believed God and it was counted to him

  790. for righteousness. Oh, there's our verse

  791. again.

  792. It's in Romans 4. Now we see it again.

  793. Know ye therefore that they were of

  794. faith the same are the sons of Abraham

  795. in scripture pursuing that God would

  796. justify Gentiles through faith preached

  797. before the gospel to Abraham in you all

  798. nations will be blessed so then they who

  799. are of faith are blessed with faithful

  800. Abraham.

  801. So Paul is very clear it's salvation is

  802. not by religious rights even god-given

  803. ones. It's by faith through grace

  804. or by grace through faith is probably

  805. the better way of putting it. Now go

  806. back to James chapter 2

    James 2 chapter mention

  807. and we see it again.

  808. James and Paul are fighting different

  809. errors. They're like two uh two uh

  810. karate masters back to back fighting

  811. different enemies. And not going to get

  812. into all that, but James chapter 2:14,

  813. "What does it profit, my brethren,

  814. though man say he has faith and has no

  815. works?" Can that kind of faith save him?

  816. The faith that doesn't produce any

  817. works?

  818. If a brother or sister be naked or

  819. destitute daily food, and one of you say

  820. to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and

  821. filled." Notwithstanding you give them

  822. not the things that are needful for the

  823. body, what does it profit? Even so,

  824. faith, if it has not works, is dead. be

  825. being alone. It's a dead faith. It's not

  826. saving faith. It's not living faith.

  827. Yeah. Man may say, "You have faith and I

  828. have works. Show me your faith without

  829. your works and I'll show you my faith by

  830. your works." You do well to believe in

  831. one God. You do well. The demons believe

  832. and tremble.

  833. You know, demons are

  834. demons are higher than atheists

  835. in their theological comprehension.

  836. That's how bad atheism is. You're worse

  837. than demon.

  838. You're in greater darkness

  839. than demon.

  840. Trying to insult anybody that's an

  841. atheist that hears my voice. I'm just

  842. saying you are in

  843. deep trouble.

  844. You believe there's one God.

  845. Even the demons know that's true.

  846. So their doctrinal statement is way

  847. beyond yours.

  848. Your doctrinal statement there's no God.

  849. Their doctrinal statement is there's one

  850. God.

  851. And they believe that and tremble

  852. because they know we're in big trouble.

  853. Better do all the sin we can because

  854. it's going the party is going to be over

  855. three times.

  856. The demons believe and tremble. But will

  857. you know, oh vain man, that faith

  858. without works is dead? But saving worth

  859. it? Saving faith is not without works.

  860. Saving faith produces good works.

  861. Was not Abraham our father justified by

  862. works when he offered up Isaac his son

  863. on the altar? See how faith wrought with

  864. his works and by works was made perfect?

  865. And the scripture was fulfilled which

  866. said Abraham believed God and it was

  867. imputed to him for righteousness and he

  868. was called the friend of God.

  869. So James uses the same verse. Do you see

  870. how important Genesis 15:6 is?

    Genesis 15:6

  871. It's repeated three times in the New

  872. Testament,

  873. Romans, Galatians, and the book of

  874. James.

  875. Whether Paul's dealing with legalism or

  876. antonyomianism or any other kind of ism,

  877. he's back to this verse.

  878. You see, the Bible connects wonderfully.

  879. if it's read properly.

  880. Warren Wearsby said, "Promises do us no

  881. good unless we believe them and act on

  882. them."

  883. Promises do us no good unless we believe

  884. on them, act.

  885. And he goes on and says, "We're not

  886. saved by making promises to God,

  887. but by believing God's promises to us.

  888. We're not saved by making promises to

  889. God.

  890. Salvation is believing God's promises to

  891. us.

  892. Isn't that what Genesis

  893. 15 is saying? Abraham believed God. He

  894. believed what God promised

  895. and was counted to him for

  896. righteousness.

  897. Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't make

  898. promises to God. I'm not saying that.

  899. I've decided to follow Jesus. I think we

  900. should make promises to God. But you

  901. know the problem with our promises we

  902. break them sometimes. How many promises

  903. have you made to God broke?

  904. Salvation is not by our promises to God.

  905. Salvation is because believing his

  906. promises to us.

  907. God help us to know that

  908. there's a Lutheran uh Old Testament

  909. scholar. He's with the Lord now, but his

  910. name was HD Leopold. He taught at the

  911. Capitol Seminary in Columbus back in the

  912. 1940s.

  913. In writing on this verse, he said this.

  914. Remember, he's Luther. It is nothing

  915. short of amazing to find in the

  916. patriarchal age so clear an answer to

  917. the question, how can a man be justified

  918. in the sight of God?

  919. He's expounding on Genesis 15:6.

    Genesis 15:6

  920. And he had said here is the first

  921. instance of the use of the word believe

  922. in the scripture.

  923. So in the first instance of the word

  924. believe in scripture you see this whole

  925. thing Abraham believed God and it it was

  926. counted to him for righteousness.

  927. You want to be righteous in God's sight

  928. you got to believe God.

  929. You got to believe God's promise.

  930. [clears throat]

  931. And Bruce Walke, Hebrew schol modern

  932. Hebrew scholar, I think he's still

  933. living. He said the back on Genesis

    Genesis 15:6

  934. 15:6, the divine reck reckoning

  935. qualifies Abraham to become the

  936. recipient of a land grant to be

  937. transmitted to his descendants.

  938. He's going to talk about all that in

  939. Genesis

  940. 15.

  941. the descendants. Oh yeah, they're going

  942. to go down to Egypt and be slaves.

  943. They're going to come back. He said

  944. descendants.

  945. Harold Stiger said, "The p purposes of

  946. the Lord are to be wrought out in

  947. Abram's descendants in this land and in

  948. no other."

  949. you know, United Nations or the United

  950. Nations, but the people that were

  951. thinking about the Jews getting a land

  952. of their own. At one time, they

  953. suggested a place in Africa.

  954. It's not the program.

  955. That's not the program. God outlined the

  956. program.

  957. But thank God that Abraham believed the

  958. promise about God and about the land and

  959. about his descendants.

  960. I mean, land without people isn't

  961. worthless, right? I mean, think of an

  962. agricultural economy. If you don't have

  963. somebody to work the land, the land's

  964. not doing you any good. It's a it's a

  965. it's a it's a it's not an asset if you

  966. don't have someone to work the land.

  967. That's the whole book of Ruth. Land

  968. without somebody to work the land

  969. in an agricultural economy is a deficit,

  970. not an asset.

  971. So the land has to be worked. You have

  972. to be lived on and worked. So God's

  973. promising Abraham descendants in a land.

  974. And he's promising your descendants are

  975. going to get this land. And Abraham's

  976. living for the future, not the present.

  977. All he did was live in tents, waiting

  978. for the promise, waiting for the babies

  979. to be born, waiting for the and knowing

  980. he's not going to see everything in his

  981. lifetime.

  982. Are you living in the present?

  983. Are you living in the future?

  984. Knowing the future and what God promises

  985. his people should determine how you live

  986. in the present.

  987. Abraham

  988. lived in tents.

  989. He was willing to do that. He left the

  990. house in a Caldes.

  991. If you heard me say, archaeologist the

  992. founder of Caldes and they even had

  993. indoor plumbing 4,000 [clears throat]

  994. years ago.

  995. He left that to live in tents.

  996. He wasn't thinking about the present as

  997. much as the future. [clears throat]

  998. And

  999. Abraham was counted righteous when he

  1000. believed what God said.

1001. James Denny was a Greek scholar over a

1002. hundred years ago. He said the whole

1003. Pauline gospel could be summed up in one

1004. word. God justifies the ungodly.

1005. and a Greek scholar at Robertson,

1006. Southern Baptist Greek scholar almost a

1007. hundred years ago when he was writing

1008. whatever parallel exists between baptism

1009. and circumstancism as here stated by

1010. Paul argues for faith before baptism and

1011. for baptism as the sign and seal of the

1012. faith already had before baptism.

  1013. Absolutely right at Robertson.

1014. Baptism won't do you any good if you

  1015. don't have pain.

1016. Now, let's apply this now. Let's just

1017. apply it a little bit. Are you saved?

  1018. Are you saved?

1019. Are you righteous in God's sight right

1020. now? As righteous as Christ in God's

1021. sight right now, because you Christ

1022. righteousness put to your account.

1023. Do you believe what God said? Do you

1024. take God at his word?

1025. This is so important. This is so basic.

1026. It's amazing that people can go to

1027. church, go to church, get baptized, go

1028. to church, even be a member of the

1029. church, and they don't even know the

  1030. gospel.

  1031. Part of it's the preacher's fault.

1032. They're not clear if there's fog in the

  1033. pulpit.

1034. There's going to be fog in the pew.

1035. And many are churchgoers, but they're

  1036. not Christians yet.

  1037. And that's that's all right. That's

  1038. that's good. If a person's not a

1039. Christian yet, we want them in church.

1040. We want as many up in here we can get.

  1041. But don't be satisfied

1042. to meet God and say, God says, "Why

1043. should I let you in my heaven?" Well, I

  1044. went to church.

1045. But did you believe on my son?

1046. No, I never got around to that.

1047. Were you born again? No, I was never

  1048. born again.

1049. Heard a lot of sermons though.

1050. You know, it's very important.

1051. We need to all believe what God says. I

1052. hope everybody here is not a member of

1053. our church would become a member of our

1054. church. But church membership cannot

  1055. save you.

1056. If you make a false profession,

1057. fool the preacher, fool yourself.

1058. William Kerry said, the missionary,

1059. famous missionary William Kerry said

1060. something interesting. He said, "I'm not

  1061. afraid of failure.

1062. I'm afraid of succeeding in things that

  1063. don't matter."

  1064. Wow, that's a convicting statement.

1065. succeeding at I'm not afraid of failure.

1066. I am afraid of succeeding in things that

1067. don't matter. Boy, does the devil throw

1068. us a lot of things that don't matter.

1069. And he lets us succeed.

1070. Now, that doesn't mean all we got to do

1071. all we should do is read the Bible and

1072. witness and go to church. I'm not saying

1073. that. I'm simply saying life is a full

1074. life and it it's important to have a

  1075. full life. But

1076. you can fool yourself. I'm good at this

1077. and I've succeeded at this. So, life is

1078. good. Just totally ignore your need for

  1079. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1080. Many people today,

1081. many people today could not say in God's

  1082. presence,

  1083. I'm a I've been a Bible reader.

1084. They couldn't honestly say that.

1085. And God wants us to not only know his

1086. word, but to fellowship with his people,

1087. but also to share the gospel

1088. with people who are not yet his people.

1089. But many people are very uh loose in

1090. their connections with even God's people

1091. or God's word. Someone said this, I just

1092. read it. McDonald's can mess up your

1093. order a hundred times and you still go

1094. back. One wrong thing in a church and

  1095. you quit.

  1096. Well, there's going to churches aren't

1097. going to do it right. The preachers not

1098. always going to do it right. The

1099. Christians aren't going to do it right.

1100. You got an excuse now. Somebody didn't

1101. shake my hand. Somebody didn't look at

1102. me right. Somebody said something wrong.

  1103. I'm out of here.

1104. But you go back to McDonald's. I was at

1105. McDonald's for a tea this morning to

  1106. keep me awake.

  1107. I keep going back.

1108. So somebody might say, "I don't need

1109. Christ. I don't need the Bible or the

1110. church. I'll save myself." You know

1111. nothing of the Bible if that's your

1112. idea. I do the Ten Commandments. You

1113. know nothing of the Bible if that's your

  1114. idea.

1115. You can have good intentions and good

1116. desires to do the right thing. You can

1117. even do the right thing and hurt other

  1118. people.

1119. That's how goofy this world is.

  1120. I was reading today about a a fellow,

1121. some of you may have heard of him. I may

1122. be mispronouncing his name. He was

1123. Thomas Midglay. He was an American

1124. mechanical and uh chemical engineer. He

1125. had a 100 patents to his name.

1126. And his goal as a scientist was to do

1127. good. He wanted to find things that

  1128. would help people.

1129. And this man meant well. He died in 19

1130. can't read my writing whether it was 94

  1131. or 44,

1132. but he meant very well. But two of his

  1133. inventions

1134. hurt more than anything else.

  1135. He invented leaded gasoline.

  1136. He invented Freon

1137. and he was trying to solve problems with

1138. his leaded gasoline. He solved that

1139. problem but created another problem.

1140. And with Freon, it was the same thing.

1141. It solved one problem but then created

  1142. other things.

1143. And he contracted polio in 1940. So it

1144. was 44. And he invented a device to help

1145. him get out of bed.

1146. This guy was always inventing stuff,

1147. even when he had polio. But then thei

1148. device he invented, I'm sure it was a

1149. good one, but somehow he messed up and

  1150. strangled himself

1151. with it in his device.

1152. Now, some say he committed suicide, some

1153. said it was an accident. I don't know.

1154. But either way, smart people

1155. can with good intentions can mean well,

1156. can be brilliant, can be sincere, to

1157. want to help others, and want to do the

1158. right thing and still mess up. Why? It's

  1159. a fallen world.

  1160. We're not omniresent. We're not

1161. omnisient. We're not omnipotent. Only

  1162. God is that.

1163. And even Paul said, "When I do good,

  1164. evil

1165. is present with me." He was writing as a

1166. Christian. Not talking about his

1167. BC days. He's talking about as a

  1168. Christian.

  1169. [clears throat]

1170. When I read this, I think of the hymn

1171. that says, "Oh, to be saved from myself,

  1172. dear Lord.

1173. Oh, to be lost in thee.

1174. Now, the application of this sermon is

  1175. you have saving faith.

1176. You have a faith that God recognizes.

1177. Not talking about church or the pastor.

1178. You have a faith that God recogn

  1179. God's made a promise and you said, "I'm

1180. putting both feet on this promise. I'm

  1181. standing on the promises.

1182. I take God at his word and he will make

1183. me righteous. He will declare me

1184. righteous. That will be my legal

1185. standing. Being justified by faith, we

1186. have peace with God through our Lord

1187. Jesus Christ. And he who knew no sin,

1188. that's Jesus, was made to be sin for us

1189. that we might be made the righteousness

  1190. of God in him.

1191. As the himmwriter said, dressed in,

1192. speaking of Jesus, dressed in his

1193. righteousness alone, faultless to stand

  1194. before the throne.

1195. If you know that and you believe that,

1196. you got your ticket for eternity.

  1197. [clears throat]

1198. Martin Lloyd Jones, a congregational

1199. preacher of the 20th 20th century, said,

1200. "Nobody is good enough. The issue is not

1201. our goodness. The issue is God's good."

  1202. There's a good God.

1203. that wants to deal with people like you

1204. and me. That God came and died at the

  1205. cross of Calvary

1206. that he could take our sin and we could

  1207. get his righteousness.

1208. So I hope that this this section has

1209. been a help to you and I hope like Paul

1210. you and James you will apply Genesis 6

  1211. 156 to your life.

  1212. I don't want to have a fuzzy faith.

1213. I want to have an informed faith.

1214. I don't want to have fake faith. I want

1215. to have real faith. I want to have a

  1216. God-given faith. It's a gift from God

1217. where all of a sudden I trust him in his

  1218. word

1219. in a way I never did before.

1220. I take God at his word that he'll save

  1221. me for Jesus' sake.

1222. I take God at his word that

1223. those who trust in Christ will be saved

1224. regardless of their past and their sin.

1225. Oh, to be saved from myself, dear Lord.

1226. Oh, to be lost in thee. Oh, that it

1227. might be no more I but Christ that lives

  1228. in me.

1229. If you're not saved, may God save you

1230. today, right now. Where are you sick?

1231. You can. He can do that.

1232. But you hear Genesis 15:6, Abraham

    Genesis 15:6

1233. believed God. It was counted to him for

  1234. righteousness. Abraham got Christ

1235. righteousness the moment he believed

  1236. God's father.

1237. Still the way it works. There is no

  1238. other way.

1239. Father, we thank you for your grace in

  1240. our lives.

1241. If there's anybody here in this church

1242. today or that's listening on YouTube or

  1243. online,

1244. we pray that doesn't yet know you. We

  1245. pray

1246. we bring them under deep conviction of

  1247. sin

1248. and then look to the one who died for

  1249. our sins,

1250. who took our sin that we could have his

  1251. righteousness

1252. and put their faith in him and his work

  1253. for themselves.

1254. and with tears in their eyes and in

  1255. their heart

  1256. they save me God

  1257. for Jesus sake.

  1258. Amen.
