  1. Uh we are doing uh something different,

  2. aren't we? Uh as much as I love book

  3. studies, that's my passion.

  4. But I've decided after many many years

  5. of book studies, we primarily we need a

  6. break from that. So we're doing a

  7. section on great text in the Bible. And

  8. uh we hopefully these are picked not

  9. just because they're the only texts that

  10. we ought to preach there in each book,

  11. but one that really sticks out that we

  12. really need to know uh for our Christian

  13. walk. And it's kind of hard to know

  14. which ones to pick. That's what we're

  15. doing. And um

  16. so may the Lord help us as as we do do

  17. that.

  18. Let's have a word of prayer. Father,

  19. help us as we come before you today.

  20. Direct our thoughts in your perfect will

  21. in Jesus name. Amen.

  22. So, we took a text from Genesis.

  23. Hope you remember the text. I hope you

  24. remember the verse. It was extremely

  25. it's an extremely important verse in the

  26. whole Bible. Our text this morning comes

  27. from Exodus 15. So, we're moving on to

  28. Exodus,

  29. the second book in the Bible.

  30. And when we're in Exodus 15, we have an

  31. event that precedes it in chapter 14.

  32. And that's where the Jewish nation, two

  33. million people,

  34. uh, escaped slavery and the pursuing

  35. armies of Egypt

  36. by God parting the waters of the Red Sea

  37. and uh, drowning

  38. the armies of Pharaoh

  39. when they tried to go across.

  40. It's an important story.

  41. And in chapter 15,

  42. we have

  43. the Jewish people

  44. on the other side of the Red Sea

  45. worshiping.

  46. Worshiping.

  47. This is called the song

  48. of the redeemed

  49. or better put

  50. the song of Moses.

  51. Now, there's two songs of Moses. One is

  52. in Deuteronomy. It's a completely

  53. different song, but the one here is I

  54. like to refer to it as the song of

  55. Moses, and so does the New Testament.

  56. So, I'm just going to go uh to uh the

  57. first couple of verses here. I'm not

  58. even going to read the whole chapter

  59. because this is not a chapter study.

  60. This is not a verse by verse study. It's

  61. assumed that you will go back and work

  62. on this yourself this week.

  63. Then sang Moses and the children of

  64. Israel this song

  65. unto the Lord

  66. and spoke, saying, I will sing to the

  67. Lord, for he's triumphed gloriously, the

  68. horse and his rider hath he thrown into

  69. the sea.

  70. So it was not just their deliverance. It

  71. was the defeat of the Egyptian Pharaoh

  72. and his armies and his 600 choice

  73. chariots

  74. plus the other regular chariots and an

  75. army of men on horses and on foot

  76. drowned.

  77. So the Egyptians drowned

  78. and the Israelites were delivered

  79. and two million Jews escaped slavery

  80. by God's act of Old Testament

  81. redemption.

  82. And they're singing to their redeemer.

  83. They're singing about their national

  84. redemption from slavery.

  85. They're rejoicing

  86. in God.

  87. And they say in verse two, which is our

  88. text,

  89. the Lord is my strength

  90. and my song and is become my salvation.

  91. Two million people singing that.

  92. He is my God and I'll prepare him.

  93. He is my God and I'll prepare him a

  94. habitation. My father's God and I'll

  95. exalt him.

  96. Father, help me to speak, help each of

  97. us to hear your truth this day in Jesus

  98. name. Amen.

  99. Biblical literacy

  100. in America is probably at an all-time

  101. low.

  102. When I was a child growing up, even

  103. non-Christians knew the Bible stories.

  104. They even taught the Ten Commandments in

  105. school. People knew that.

  106. So unregenerate, unsaved people had some

  107. knowledge of the Bible and some

  108. knowledge of the scriptures. It's almost

  109. totally absent in America today.

  110. The biblical illit illiteracy is at an

  111. all-time high in our country.

  112. I read about um

  113. the wife of one of our former

  114. presidents. She was bragging on her

  115. husband.

  116. He's read through the Bible twice.

  117. Nobody does.

  118. She unknowingly dis unknowingly

  119. in her bragging about her husband's

  120. efforts to read the Bible through twice

  121. a former president of the United States

  122. how blatantly

  123. ignorant they were of God's word.

  124. Every Christian should be reading the

  125. Bible. And I confess as an early

  126. Christian I wasn't biblically literate.

  127. I thought I knew enough.

  128. My senior year at OU, I made it a goal

  129. to read through the Bible because I'd

  130. never done it.

  131. My grandfather had done it several

  132. times. He had a Bible right there, but I

  133. never it never occurred to me that I

  134. should be doing I always thought I'll do

  135. it someday

  136. and even tried a couple of times and

  137. wore myself out.

  138. But in America, in America in the 1700s,

  139. the founding fathers, even

  140. non-Christians were biblically literate

  141. in a way that many churchgoers are not.

  142. Now, they some of them were churchgoers,

  143. some of them were not,

  144. but they had a knowledge of the Bible

  145. that people don't even have.

  146. I have something in my hand. You

  147. probably got one of these in your wallet

  148. or your purse.

  149. If you want to pull one of them out,

  150. pull a $1 bill out and look at it. I

  151. didn't say put it in the plate. I said

  152. pull it out and look at it. And look at

  153. the back of the $1 bill. Do you see that

  154. per pyramid with a allseeing eye on it?

  155. That comes from the great seal of the

  156. United States of America.

  157. Do you know in the 1700s what was

  158. proposed by Benjamin Franklin a deist

  159. not a Christian

  160. and promoted by Thomas Jefferson

  161. a deist at best and not a Christian.

  162. They promoted and proposed

  163. originally

  164. the story of the Red Sea with Moses and

  165. the drowning of the Egyptians.

  166. They promoted what we have here in Acts

  167. or excuse me in Exodus 15

  168. and they promoted this statement.

  169. Rebellion against tyrants is obedience

  170. to God.

  171. That's how they defined what the

  172. American Revolution was.

  173. And Pen Franklin really wanted that on

  174. the seal. He didn't get it. They It

  175. didn't win out,

  176. but he proposed it.

  177. Some think he originated it, but he at

  178. least proposed it. We don't know where

  179. it originated from.

  180. And Thomas Jefferson

  181. uh promoted it.

  182. He tried it in the Virginia legislature.

  183. He tried he put it on all kinds of stuff

  184. that really rang true with him.

  185. Rebellion against tyrants is obedience

  186. to God. And they had that concept. Where

  187. did they get the concept Exodus?

  188. The Exodus of the Jews

  189. out of Egyptian slavery.

  190. and God involved in leading them out and

  191. giving them the victory.

  192. >> [clears throat]

  193. >> Now

  194. what we have here is them worshiping

  195. on the other shore

  196. a choir

  197. of two million escaped

  198. slaves

  199. who've been redeemed

  200. out of national slavery. They even use

  201. the word redeemed later on in this song.

  202. So they are it's a song of the redeemed.

  203. We call it the song of Moses.

  204. And it's very important in Bible study

  205. to focus on this whole this whole song

  206. that goes several verses. But we're just

  207. taking this this little snidbit of it.

  208. The statement in verse

  209. two,

  210. how important is public worship?

  211. Can't we just worship privately? Yes, we

  212. can. Yes, we should.

  213. And I'm not but I'm not talking about

  214. what we ought to do in private

  215. or at home with our families. I'm

  216. talking about public worship. How

  217. important is it? That was public worship

  218. on the shores of the Red Sea.

  219. Is public worship essential or optional?

  220. Is public worship crucial or

  221. discretionary? Is it negligible or is it

  222. non-negotiable?

  223. Is public worship something we should

  224. take very seriously or very casually?

  225. What is the biblical expectation? What

  226. are the biblical examples? What's the

  227. biblical model?

  228. In Exodus 15, the people weren't left to

  229. just, well, if you feel like thanking

  230. God, thank God. You know, we're taken

  231. off here to the promised land.

  232. There was an organized public display of

  233. thanksgiving

  234. and celebration to God.

  235. And the question all of us have to ask

  236. is as Christians, does my practice match

  237. the New Testament norm?

  238. Because the New Testament Christians

  239. were not Robinson Cruso Christians. You

  240. know what I'm talking about? The guy on

  241. the island with nobody there himself.

  242. The New Testament example, the New

  243. Testament model is something that we

  244. should reflect in our own lives.

  245. The New Testament assumes that

  246. Christians will not just worship

  247. individually and believe individually,

  248. but they'll get together publicly

  249. to worship and fellowship and minister

  250. in some kind of public setting.

  251. It assumes that and it it records that

  252. Christians get together. That's not

  253. difficult to document.

  254. Let me quote a few verses. Not even the

  255. whole verse, but just the part about

  256. gathering together and worship.

  257. You see, it's something that's assumed.

  258. It's an assumption

  259. that Christians won't just be Christians

  260. by themselves, but they will get

  261. together whenever they can.

  262. 1 Corinthians 14:26. What shall we say

    1 Corinthians 14:26

  263. then, brothers? When you come together,

  264. underline,

  265. when you come together. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 11:17

  266. 11:17. In the following directives, I

  267. have no praise for you, for your

  268. meetings do more harm than good,

  269. or your gathering together does more

  270. harm than good. in the first place when

  271. I hear you come together as a church

  272. underlined. So they had meetings, they

  273. came together.

  274. Verse 20 of 1 Corinthians 11, when you

  275. come together. Verse 33, so my brethren,

  276. when you come together, so when you meet

  277. together, it's presupposed that they're

  278. meeting

  279. that they wouldn't think of just being

  280. by themselves.

  281. It's assumed. It's so self-evident. It's

  282. so prevalent.

  283. It's like saying, "Rain is wet, the sky

  284. is blue, and the grass is green. Those

  285. are assumed things.

  286. 1 Thessalonians 5:11, "Comfort

    1 Thessalonians 5:11

  287. yourselves together." Luke 24:14, "They

    Luke 24:14

  288. talked together of all these things."

  289. Acts 1:15, "The number of names together

    Acts 1:15

  290. were," what was it? 110 120 something

  291. like that. Second, uh, Acts 2:44, "All

    Acts 2:44

  292. that believed were together."

  293. The New Testament epistles assume a

  294. public gathering to which the scriptures

  295. are read.

  296. Colossians 4:16. After this letter has

    Colossians 4:16

  297. been read to you, see that it's also

  298. read of the church of Laosans and that

  299. you in turn read the letter from Laosia.

  300. So there was public reading of scripture

  301. in in the churches if you wanted to hear

  302. this. Most people didn't have a Bible in

  303. the first century. If you wanted to know

  304. the Bible, you came out publicly and

  305. heard it read.

  306. They were expensive.

  307. Handwritten, handcopied.

  308. Some people had it wasn't easy.

  309. And the New Testament says in Hebrews

  310. 24:25, "Forsake not the assembling of

  311. yourselves together as the manner of

  312. some is." Yeah, there's some people that

  313. do it, but that is definitely the

  314. exception, not the rule. And that exe

  315. that definitely is not an exception that

  316. is legitimate. Now, of course, if you're

  317. sick or if you're in prison or you're

  318. traveling on some legitimate business,

  319. obviously you can't always be in a

  320. public worship setting.

  321. You can worship God by yourself. You

  322. should worship God by yourself. You

  323. should sing to the Lord by yourself. You

  324. should read the Bible by yourself.

  325. But Christianity is a team sport.

  326. But everybody agreed that American

  327. football is a team sport.

  328. Yes, you could practice kicking. I'm

  329. sure Michael Benson did a lot of

  330. practice by himself,

  331. field goals,

  332. but football is a team sport.

  333. And uh

  334. if you really want to play football, you

  335. need a team.

  336. And so it's important for us. There is

  337. private worship, but there's public

  338. worship. And in any sport, there's

  339. practice and preparation for the team

  340. effort.

  341. Our private devotions, our prayer life,

  342. our individual ministries are part of

  343. wherever we are in our family or

  344. neighborhood or whatever is to prepare

  345. us for the public gathering.

  346. And a large part of public worship is a

  347. collective singing of praises to Christ.

  348. Colossians chapter 3 verse 15 and 16.

    Colossians 3:15

  349. We we collectively sing and praise the

  350. Lord.

  351. Now,

  352. this morning,

  353. I'm going to look at some public

  354. gatherings of God's people in the Bible

  355. to publicly worship.

  356. And in each one of them, they use the

  357. same song, the same refrain. The Lord is

  358. our strength,

  359. our song,

  360. and has become our salvation.

  361. In fact, it says my the Lord is my

  362. strength, my song, and has become my

  363. salvation. Each person individually,

  364. it's singing collectively.

  365. It's personal.

  366. Now, what we're reading about here in

  367. Exodus chapter 15 took place almost

    Exodus 15 chapter mention

  368. 3,500 years ago, more like 3,450

  369. approximately.

  370. But it was as public as you can get.

  371. And these two million people had a lot

  372. to praise God for. You and I got more.

  373. They had a national redemption. We have

  374. a personal redemption.

  375. that national redemption is simply in

  376. the Bible to prepare us for

  377. understanding personal redemption.

  378. If you go back to chapter 14 and verse

  379. 29, it says, "The children of Israel

  380. walked upon dry land in the midst of the

  381. sea, and the waters were a wall to them

  382. on the right and on the left. Thus the

  383. Lord saved Israel that day out of the

  384. hand of the Egyptians. And Israel saw

  385. the Egyptian dead upon the seashore.

  386. Israel saw the great work which the Lord

  387. did on the Egyptians. And the people

  388. feared the Lord and believed the Lord

  389. and his servant Moses.

  390. So they believe what God said and they

  391. believe what God said through Moses.

  392. They feared the Lord. They had a fresh

  393. reverence. They put their trust in the

  394. Lord. They had a fresh faith

  395. and they had a newfound faith in the

  396. prophet Moses.

  397. Wow. The 10 plagues were great, but this

  398. tops them all.

  399. This is really confirmation

  400. beyond anything else we've seen.

  401. So, there's celebration and rehearsal

  402. and recognition of what's happened. And

  403. they use the word redeem in verse 13.

  404. Thou in 15:13, thou in mercy has led

  405. forth the people whom you've redeemed

  406. that you've guided them in your strength

  407. in into your holy habitation.

  408. That's a national redemption out of

  409. slavery.

  410. Now, this was a supernatural phenomena.

  411. And 40 years later,

  412. the harlot Rahab gave testimony

  413. to the deliverance at the Red Sea.

  414. She wasn't there.

  415. She lived in Jericho.

  416. But all the way up to Jericho in the

  417. pagan nations, they heard about it. They

  418. knew all about it. They knew everything.

  419. That story circulated

  420. and probably if you think about Rahab

  421. the harlot

  422. and you think about the book of Exodus

  423. and how it connects with Joshua 40 years

  424. in the in wilderness. This event

  425. probably took place before Rahab was

  426. born.

  427. How do you know that? Well, not too many

  428. harlots over 40.

  429. I mean, that's a crude way to put it,

  430. but

  431. she was still

  432. able to earn her money that way.

  433. But when she met the pro two men, the

  434. spies, she put her faith in the Lord. It

  435. became not just intellectual but

  436. personal.

  437. And she has entered into Hebrews 11 as

  438. one who put her personal faith in the

  439. Lord.

  440. And she became an ancestor of Jesus

  441. marrying someone of who would become in

  442. the line of the Messiah.

  443. Now what these people experienced so

  444. long ago, you and I are slaves to our

  445. sin. We're not free.

  446. You think you're free? You're not free.

  447. That freedom is an illusion.

  448. We're slaves to sin till we're redeemed

  449. by Christ and delivered from that

  450. slavery. The Ten Commandments had not

  451. given him salvation. God didn't even

  452. give him the Ten Commandments. Remember

  453. in the book of Exodus, the people are

  454. redeemed first

  455. through the blood of the Passover lamb.

  456. They're the ten commandments are given

  457. to a people who are already redeemed.

  458. They're not a way to earn salvation. And

  459. God says, "Oh no, got saved in the Old

  460. Testament by keeping the Ten

  461. Commandments, but I changed my mind. Now

  462. it's going to be good again." That's not

  463. the picture. The Ten Commandments was a

  464. rule of life for Old Testament saints in

  465. the kingdom era,

  466. but they were given after they came out

  467. of Egypt, not before. And it's very

  468. definite in Exodus 19 that that's the

  469. fact God reminds them brought you out in

  470. eagle's name you like a eagle swept in

  471. and taken care of you.

  472. So these were a redeemed people redeemed

  473. by the blood of the Passover lamb which

  474. is a picture of Jesus's blood redeemed

  475. by the power of God. They had a

  476. redemption that was by blood through

  477. blood and by power. And that is just a

  478. foreshadowing

  479. of the ultimate redemption

  480. through the cross of Calvary.

  481. It's pictured there by Jesus's blood and

  482. his resurrection by God's power. And

  483. that is just a picture of future

  484. redemption

  485. that is tied to that first redemption

  486. at the cross

  487. when we will experience

  488. the new heavens and new earth with our

  489. Lord.

  490. Now so we we this verse I want it to

  491. ring in your head. The Lord is my

  492. strength, my song and has become my

  493. salvation. Now, of those three thoughts,

  494. the Lord is my strength, my song, and

  495. has become my salvation.

  496. If you had to pick among the three great

  497. statements,

  498. which one do you think the drowning of

  499. the Egyptians in the sea of the Red Sea

  500. pictures? The Lord's my strength.

  501. I mean, they're all three true because

  502. he was their strength. He was their song

  503. and their salvation. But obviously

  504. this was an incredible display of God's

  505. omnipotence.

  506. He takes out a whole army of of of uh

  507. Egyptian nation which was a major player

  508. at that time.

  509. So the Lord is my strength and because

  510. he's my strength, we don't have strength

  511. to get out here. and we didn't have

  512. strength to get out of Egypt on oursel.

  513. We're there 400 years. The Lord's my

  514. strength and because he's my strength.

  515. He's my song and he's become my

  516. salvation.

  517. Now, let's look at Psalm 118.

  518. Some of you have done this with me

  519. before in times past.

  520. Psalm 118.

  521. And again, I would love to teach Psalm

  522. 188 Psalm Psalm 118. I've taught it

  523. before, but I just want to look at verse

  524. 14 in a psalm.

  525. Guess what?

  526. This psalm

  527. sung in the Jewish temple

  528. many years after the Exodus event

  529. many many years afterwards

  530. goes back and looks at that event and

  531. refers to it in verse 14. The Lord is my

  532. strength and my song

  533. has become my salvation.

  534. That's interesting.

  535. Now the emphasis here

  536. we is very clear and if we had time we

  537. would go through it. This particular

  538. hymn, Psalm 118, the whole psalm is led

  539. by a Davidic king, not necessarily

  540. David, but some Davidic king is the song

  541. leader leading the whole nation to sing

  542. this national hymn.

  543. This is a national hymn.

  544. And you go back to verse 10. All nations

  545. compassed about me, but in the name of

  546. the Lord, I'll destroy them. They

  547. compassed about me. Yay, they compassed

  548. about me, but in the name of the Lord,

  549. I'll destroy them. Verse 11, they

  550. compassed about me like bees. They're

  551. quenched. They qu They They are quenched

  552. like fire of thorns. In the name of the

  553. Lord, I'll destroy them. Thou hast

  554. thrust hard at me that I might fall. But

  555. the Lord help me.

  556. And the Lord is my strength. My song has

  557. become my salvation.

  558. So there's been some national military

  559. victory where the nation that God

  560. started was defended

  561. and it's celebrating God's deliverance

  562. from the nation that attacked them. A

  563. national thanksgiving, a joyful

  564. procession to the temple. We can't go

  565. into all the details. led by the unnamed

  566. Davidic king.

  567. We're not at the seashore now with this

  568. psalm. We're at the temple. We're at

  569. public worship of the nation

  570. celebrating a military victory again.

  571. G. Hassel Bulock, the wonderful psalm

  572. scholar of our present day, said the big

  573. idea. Here's the big idea.

  574. You always you should always be

  575. preaching the big idea.

  576. It is in our weakness, not our strength,

  577. that we learn how strong God is to say.

  578. The big idea is it is in our weakness,

  579. not our strength, that we learn how

  580. strong God is to say.

  581. When God gets us out of a situation

  582. that if he didn't get us out, we

  583. wouldn't be out.

  584. Pearl Harbor put a pretty big debt in

  585. America, didn't

  586. think about that.

  587. God was merciful to our nation

  588. in allowing us to win.

  589. I believe the battle of Midway was a big

  590. battle. We would have really been in

  591. trouble. we hadn't got that uh

  592. intelligence and be able to fight that

  593. battle and win, things could be

  594. different.

  595. We should be thankful. [clears throat]

  596. But here the Jewish people were

  597. thankful. And HC Leopold, a Hebrew

  598. conservative Lutheran Old Testament

  599. scholar said of Psalm 115, "The sequence

  600. of terms in this quotation have been

  601. faulted. Strength, song, salvation. The

  602. propriety of this sequence in the

  603. present setting can be easily

  604. demonstrated. The prime issue under

  605. discussion is where did the nation get

  606. its strength in the trying times just

  607. described. The Lord was their strength.

  608. The fact that he made the weak strong

  609. put a song on their lips. But strength

  610. is oftenimes exerted to the uttermost

  611. without achieving the hope for result.

  612. It was not so in this case. Deliverance

  613. here called salvation resulted. But

  614. again, it was granted through him who

  615. came to mean much to his people. No

  616. quotation could have been a more apt

  617. summary of what was really involved. So

  618. hundreds of years after, centuries after

  619. the Red Sea,

  620. we got people not at the shore of the

  621. Red Sea, but in the Jewish temple in

  622. another public worship setting basically

  623. saying, "God's done it again.

  624. He delivered us again."

  625. The one who was our strength at the

  626. Exodus is our strength again. The one

  627. who's our song at the Exodus is our song

  628. again. He He uh he the one who saved us

  629. then saved us again. Isn't that you? How

  630. I know there's a one-time salvation

  631. where we're born again, but even after

  632. we're saved, God saves us from oursel

  633. how many times?

  634. Like the himmwriter says, "Oh, to be

  635. saved from myself, oh Lord."

  636. So what a precious thought that is.

  637. So in Exodus 15, obviously my strength

  638. gets a slight emphasis over the others.

  639. How about in Psalm 818? I would put it

  640. on song because it's in the book of

  641. songs, public worship in the temple.

  642. If God is your strength, he should be

  643. your song.

  644. How can he be your strength and not be

  645. your soul? How is that even possible?

  646. If God delivered you from your sins, if

  647. God delivered you from your ignorance,

  648. if God delivered you from your

  649. rebellion, even if you still have

  650. problems today with all of those things,

  651. you know, I'm not what I should be, but

  652. I'm not what I was being, what I used to

  653. be. Excuse me, not what I used to be.

  654. I'm inventing new language forms here.

  655. >> [clears throat]

  656. >> Now, let's look at another group in

  657. another time. Go with me to Isaiah 12.

  658. Isaiah 12.

  659. I dearly love the book of Isaiah.

  660. We're teaching Jeremiah on Sunday night.

  661. Can't tell you how much I would love to

  662. teach through the book of Isaiah again

  663. if the Lord would ever give me

  664. opportunity.

  665. If you've never pondered this book,

  666. spend a lot of time here.

  667. Isaiah chapter 12.

    Isaiah 12 chapter mention

  668. And in that day,

  669. underline in that day.

  670. Underline that in your mind. In that

  671. day, and that goes back to chapter 11.

  672. If you have any questions about what

  673. that

  674. in that day you shall say, Oh Lord, I'll

  675. praise thee. Though thou was angry with

  676. me, thine anger is turned away, and thou

  677. comfortest me. Behold, God is my

  678. salvation. I will trust and not be

  679. afraid. For the Lord, even the Lord is

  680. my strength and my song. He also is

  681. become

  682. my salvation.

  683. Therefore, with joy shall we draw water

  684. out of the wells of salvation. There's

  685. that word salvation. And in that day

  686. shall you say, "Praise the Lord. Call

  687. upon his name. Declare his doing among

  688. the people. Make mention of his name

  689. that his name is exalted. Sing to the

  690. Lord for he's done excellent things.

  691. This is known in all the earth. Cry and

  692. shout, thou inhabitant of Zion, for

  693. great is the Holy One of Israel in the

  694. midst of it. What is this scene? Go back

  695. to chapter 11.

  696. It's very clear what it is. This is a

  697. future scene. This hasn't happened yet.

  698. This is a millennial kingdom se scene.

  699. I'm not And that's chapter 11. Chapter

  700. 11 is clearly a millennium. Lions laying

  701. down with the lamb and all that stuff.

  702. Chapter 12 is the coming kingdom. Gleon,

  703. Old Testament scholar Gleon Archer

  704. entitles this the millennium, the song

  705. of the millennial believers.

  706. We're not in the millennium yet.

  707. Millennium's coming. Al Martin, not the

  708. reformed Al Martin, the dispensational

  709. Martin. There's two old There's two

  710. Bible teachers, Al Martin. Both are

  711. great teachers, but this is another Al

  712. Martin. This lovely song expresses the

  713. praise and thanksgiving of the godly

  714. remnant of Israel in the coming day of

  715. salvation. And he underlines that day.

  716. Word that day is here twice in this

  717. section. Harry Bolta, another Old

  718. Testament writer says it says uh in the

  719. first part, restored Israel gives thanks

  720. for the great deliverance and in the

  721. second part it calls on the whole earth

  722. to sing praise to the Lord.

  723. And he said like Thomas,

  724. speaking of the Jewish people, like

  725. Thomas, they've seen

  726. and believe.

  727. That's Zechariah 12.

  728. So as we look at this, it's rather

  729. fascinating.

  730. In Exodus 15, the emphasis on the Lord

  731. is my song and or my excuse me, on my

  732. strength. In Psalm 18, it's the Lord is

  733. my song. In Isaiah 12, the Lord's my

  734. salvation.

  735. But they're all all three are true in

  736. every context, but one the emphasis

  737. comes on each one of each one of them a

  738. little different. Jeffrey Groen in his

  739. writings on Isaiah said, "This cannot be

  740. restricted to the return from Babylon,

  741. but must embrace the final acts and the

  742. drama of God's dealings with his

  743. people." The truth is that the Exodus,

  744. very special as it was to Israel as both

  745. the initial and the supreme act of God

  746. on her behalf, revealing the power of

  747. his arm, will be eclipsed by an even

  748. greater deliverance of God's power.

  749. Exodus was great. I mean, really great,

  750. but nothing to what's coming.

  751. So, the Lord is my strength. The Lord is

  752. my song. The Lord is my salvation. Can

  753. we say that? Can you say that

  754. personally, individually?

  755. And I want to say the enemies of Israel,

  756. I'm sorry. Yeah, I'm talking natural

  757. Israel now.

  758. They're fighting a battle they cannot

  759. win.

  760. Egypt couldn't.

  761. The present enemies

  762. will not.

  763. God has sovereignly elected that nation.

  764. They have a national privilege.

  765. Not all of them are personally elected

  766. to salvation, but they have a national

  767. privilege.

  768. Genesis 12 says, "In you, all nations of

  769. the earth will be blessed." People want

  770. to stop that program. You're not going

  771. to stop the program.

  772. We don't get to choose what the program

  773. is.

  774. And Muslims say, "We got the program."

  775. I'm sorry. That's not the program.

  776. I enjoy Muslim people. I like talking to

  777. them. I like being with them. But that's

  778. not the program.

  779. Abraham said, "Oh, that is might live in

  780. your sight." That's not the program,

  781. Abraham.

  782. in Isaac will your seed be called.

  783. And and um you might fight God. It's not

  784. going to work. You're fighting God.

  785. He's got the program.

  786. Remember Isaac tried to make, "Oh, I

  787. want Esau. He's my man. If you can't do

  788. it, no one can." Well, no.

  789. No, Isaac. That's not it.

  790. Ishmamail's not it. Esau's not it.

  791. Jacob's it.

  792. And Jacob's son said, "Oh, we don't like

  793. Joseph ruling over us. We're going to

  794. stop that one. We're going to kill him.

  795. Good luck with that.

  796. Were they successful?

  797. They failed gloriously,

  798. embarrassingly.

  799. And you think the enemies of Israel

  800. today are going to do any better?

  801. Waste of time, waste of life,

  802. waste of energy.

  803. It's a false hope. You're fighting God.

  804. And I'm not saying the Jewish people are

  805. better than the Arab people. I'm not

  806. saying that. I don't believe that.

  807. That's not the question at all.

  808. We should love them all and we shouldn't

  809. make unregenerate Israel better than

  810. they are, messed up or unsaved.

  811. that God's got a program and he's

  812. working the program

  813. and no amount of fighting the program is

  814. going to work. It didn't work with

  815. Pharaoh. It's never going to work. It's

  816. not going to work with the Antichrist

  817. and the armies of the world. You think

  818. they're going to do better?

  819. Read the book of Revelation.

  820. You can't fight God and win.

  821. Maybe you've been fighting God

  822. over one thing or the other. Even

  823. Christians sometimes, we fight God. We

  824. We want something or we're upset that

  825. God didn't give us something and we we

  826. fight God. There's no fighting God

  827. successfully. Just say, "The Lord is my

  828. strength and my soul. Become my

  829. salvation.

  830. I'm thankful for whatever he gives me. I

  831. don't deserve any of it."

  832. Turn with me to Revelation 15.

  833. This is kind of a surprise.

  834. We're coming to the seven bold

  835. judgments. Of course, this has not

  836. happened yet.

  837. This precedes the return of Jesus to the

  838. earth with his church to rule and reign

  839. and the seven bold judgments falling on

  840. an unbelieving Christrejecting

  841. God-hating world.

  842. And I saw another sign in heaven, great

  843. and marvelous, seven angels having the

  844. seven last plagues, for in them is

  845. filled up the wrath of God.

  846. And I saw as it were a sea of glass

  847. mingled with fire

  848. over them that had gotten the victory

  849. over the beast and over his image and

  850. over the mark his mark and over the

  851. number of his name standing on the sea

  852. of glass having harps of God.

  853. And they sing the song of Moses.

  854. They What are they saying? They're

  855. singing the song of Moses,

  856. the servant of God and

  857. the song of the lamb.

  858. Whereas what's now we know what the song

  859. of Moses was. That's Exodus 15. all

  860. everything that Miriam joined in on that

  861. leading the women. It was an antipital

  862. song. The men are singing one thing, the

  863. women are another. They got the

  864. tambourines out. All that stuff. We know

  865. what the song of Moses is.

  866. But now in addition to the song of Moses

  867. is the song of the lamb. Where's that?

  868. That's Revelation 5.

  869. Worthy is the lamb that was slain to

  870. receive glory, honor, and power. For

  871. he's redeemed us to God by his blood out

  872. of every kindred, tongue and people and

  873. nation.

  874. And so here these two songs are brought

  875. together

  876. in this beautiful scene.

  877. And I I confess I didn't catch this

  878. myself,

  879. but uh reading uh the writings of

  880. another

  881. uh in his writings on Revelation, Pastor

  882. Ray Steedman,

  883. he said of Exodus 15, the song of Moses

  884. there and Revelation 15, these are the

  885. first and last songs reported in

  886. scripture

  887. and both are songs of God's 's

  888. deliverance of his people by divine

  889. power and by the blood of redemption.

  890. Now that's significant.

  891. Now you had poetry before Exodus 15 that

  892. was poetry of an descendants of Cain.

  893. That wasn't too good when he was so but

  894. first song in scripture is Exodus 15.

  895. The last

  896. it's a song of Moses. The last is

  897. Revelation 15,

  898. song of or excuse me, Revelation 5, the

  899. song of the lamb.

  900. And they're singing both. So, Old

  901. Testament and New Testament coming

  902. together.

  903. How important is public worship?

  904. Dale Ralph Davis, a fine Presbyterian

  905. scholar.

  906. I'm sure we probably differ on prophecy,

  907. but he he made this quotation of Martin

  908. Lloyd Jones and again I know I differ

  909. with Martin Lloyd Jones or I respect him

  910. a lot, quote him a lot, love him a lot.

  911. He said, "I think that of that woman in

  912. Aubber Avon, Wales, where Martin Lloyd

  913. Jones was serving in his first pastor

  914. before Martin Lloyd Jones came to London

  915. and took over from G. Campbell Morgan.

  916. He he pastored a he left medicine. One

  917. of the he was one of the great doctors

  918. in England. Left medicine although he

  919. was a top doctor trained by the top

  920. doctors for the pastor

  921. to minister to coal miners in a Welsh

  922. mining town.

  923. He tells this story of something that

  924. happened in his first pastor

  925. um about a woman. He said she was a

  926. spirit medium and collected a good fee

  927. for leading a spirit spiritist meeting

  928. on Sunday evening.

  929. Now, here's a woman dominated by demons.

  930. She's a spiritist. You say, "Oh, I don't

  931. I don't know about demons." Yeah. Yeah.

  932. You ever try to deal with a spiritist?

  933. I had a spiritist try to take my head

  934. off with a a whiskey bottle.

  935. Actually swung at me. he was saying

  936. many years ago.

  937. There's a definite satanic antagonism

  938. to the gospel.

  939. So this woman was a spirit medium and

  940. she collected a good fee for leading a

  941. spiritist meeting on Sunday evenings.

  942. But one Sunday night she was ill. She

  943. couldn't go out to the rendevous and

  944. couldn't help but notice the numbers of

  945. folks passing her house on the way to

  946. the chapel.

  947. They seemed to have a sort of

  948. anticipation written on them and she

  949. therefore determined to attend the

  950. service herself.

  951. You never know who's going to walk

  952. through the door, right?

  953. Well, she did that and came to Christ

  954. and walked on on in a consistent life.

  955. And what is so fascinating was part of

  956. her testimony.

  957. This is what the woman said. The moment

  958. I entered your chapel and sat down on a

  959. seat among the people, I was conscious

  960. of a supernatural power.

  961. I was conscious of the same sort of

  962. supernatural power as I was accustomed

  963. to in our spiritist meeting.

  964. But there was one big difference.

  965. I had the feeling that the power in your

  966. chapel was a clean

  967. power.

  968. What an interesting observation.

  969. I was conscious of a supernatural power,

  970. a clean power.

  971. And um

  972. interesting interesting Dale Ralph Davis

  973. says, "Would that I had more of a

  974. feelingness of the triune God's presence

  975. among his people. By that I don't mean

  976. having some soggy emotional sensation,

  977. but a far more distinct realization that

  978. the Holy One of Israel is once more

  979. there among his Israel.

  980. It brings the same wonder and thrill as

  981. when one reads criticism of Jesus by his

  982. Jewish peers that rejected him. This man

  983. welcomes sinners and eats with them.

  984. You remember 1 Corinthians 14 where a

  985. man comes into the worship service and

  986. it's wellorded and it's spiritual and he

  987. says God is up to you.

  988. That's the verse I think.

  989. When we come together to minister and be

  990. ministered together by one another, we

  991. also come to meet the God of the Bible,

  992. the great redeemer who is our strength

  993. and our song and has become our

  994. salvation.

  995. Adrien Rogers, the Baptist, Adrien

  996. Rogers said, "The church is a society of

  997. sinners who finally admitted it."

  998. That's all we are. Sinners saved by

  999. grace.

  1000. And you say, "I admitted. I failed. I

  1001. blew it. I I can't serve God. I can't

1002. keep ten commandments. I can't do any of

  1003. that. I need a savior. I need a savior.

1004. And you say now I believe it.

1005. The Lord is my I want the Lord as my

1006. strength and my song. It's be to come my

  1007. salvation.

1008. A British evangelist said something very

1009. powerful. He said, "The tragedy of the

  1010. of of late

1011. is that we have too many dead men in the

1012. pulpits giving out too many dead sermons

1013. to too many dead people.

1014. spiritually dead can't help these

1015. physically dead or the spiritually.

1016. But the gospel is the power of God to

  1017. salvation

1018. to everyone that believes it

1019. to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

1020. What a wonderful thing, a true thing.

1021. That doesn't mean our lives are always

  1022. going to be easy.

  1023. Sometimes

1024. it might be extremely hard.

1025. Have you ever heard of a man I'm going

1026. to I'm winding down now.

1027. Coming in for a landing, but not quite.

1028. Have you ever heard of a man by the name

  1029. of Charles Waggle?

  1030. We ei

  1031. Charles Wiggle,

1032. he wrote the song, gospel song, No One

  1033. Ever Cared for Me

  1034. Like Jesus.

1035. You know the story behind that song.

1036. Charles Weaguer was an itinerate

1037. evangelist. Not an easy life. Wasn't a

1038. pastor. He was an itinerate evangelist.

1039. Went from place to place.

  1040. and uh

1041. he was engaged in that for many many

  1042. years

1043. and profitably engaged. And he said in

1044. all this I thought I had the support of

  1045. my wife

1046. but somewhere along the way she began to

1047. be influenced by relatives who cared not

1048. about the things of the Lord nor

1049. understood the calling of God.

1050. One day, I found a note waiting for me.

1051. It said, "Charlie, I've been a fool.

1052. I've done without a lot of things long

1053. enough. From here on out, I'm getting

1054. all I can of what the world owes me. I

1055. know you'll continue to be a fool for

1056. Jesus, but for me, it's goodbye."

  1057. She left it.

1058. If you continue on and know that story,

1059. she died five years later.

1060. What a hardship it was for Charlie Wel

1061. because he loved his wife. He said, "The

1062. bottom of my world seemed to fall out at

1063. that moment. For I love my wife very

1064. much. I found her and tried to reason

1065. with her and pleaded with her not to go

1066. through with her plans, but it was to no

  1067. avail.

1068. One day, as I sat on the porch of a

1069. cottage in Florida overlooking a lake, I

1070. felt so depressed and forsaken. I

1071. thought I might end it all.

1072. Your work's finished. No one cares

1073. whether you're alive or dead. Why not

  1074. walk off the pier?

1075. But through the appalling gloom of that

1076. moment, there seemed to be a flash, a

1077. voice in my soul that says, "Charlie, I

  1078. haven't forgotten you. Charlie, I care

1079. for you. Let not your heart be troubled.

1080. I threw myself down beside the chair and

1081. asked the Lord to forgive me for not

1082. fully trusting him and promised that

1083. come what may, from here on, I would

1084. never let such a thought cross my mind.

  1085. Out of that pain,

1086. out of all that experience,

  1087. he wrote,

  1088. "No one ever cared

  1089. for me."

  1090. Jesus.

1091. God uses the troubles of our life to

  1092. enable us

  1093. to mature ourselves,

1094. but also to minister to others in need.

  1095. Maybe you've had maybe you're going

1096. through great troubles or you've been

1097. you're you got more troubles coming.

1098. But our troubles tell us something

1099. because they some we have nowhere else

  1100. to go. The Lord

1101. will surely show us no one ever cared

  1102. for me like Jesus.

  1103. That hymn

  1104. very much describes

1105. what our Lord is to us.

1106. No one ever cared for me like Jesus.

1107. There's no other friend so kind as he.

1108. No one else could take the sin and

1109. darkness from me. Oh, how much

  1110. he cared.

1111. I hope that we can take our text and

1112. apply it to our lives and the lives of

  1113. those we love.

1114. Fellow Grant Reichen in his writings on

  1115. Exodus. It's a collection of sermons

1116. gave this application that I thought was

  1117. quite good.

1118. He said in 1792 a group of settlers

  1119. traveled to Africa.

1120. There were more than a thousand of them,

  1121. all of African descent.

1122. Some had worked as slaves on American

1123. trans plantations. Others had served as

1124. soldiers in the British army and then

1125. moved north to live in Canada. Together,

1126. they planned to resettle what is now

1127. Sierra Leon on land purchased as a

1128. province of freedom. The settlers were

  1129. all professing Christians.

1130. When they reached Africa, they marched

1131. to shore singing a hymn by William

  1132. Hammond.

1133. The song, Awake and Sing the Song. And

1134. this is what they sang as they got a new

1135. start. Awake and sing the song of Moses

  1136. and the Lamb.

1137. Wake every heart and every tongue to

1138. praise the Savior's name. Sing on your

1139. heavenly way, you ransom sinners. Sing,

1140. sing on, rejoicing every day in Christ

  1141. the eternal king.

1142. Those Christians knew how to apply our

  1143. text

  1144. to their lives.

1145. Do we know how to apply it to our lives?

  1146. Someday

1147. all who are saved are going to join the

  1148. choir of heaven

1149. and we're going to sing the song of the

  1150. lamb

1151. and we're going to sing

  1152. millions of us.

1153. The two million choir at the Red Sea

1154. will be dwarfed by the choir of heaven.

1155. And we're going to have the privilege of

  1156. joining that choir

1157. singing the song of Moses

  1158. and the song

  1159. of the lamb.

1160. And you remember the song of Moses is

1161. the first song in the Bible and the

  1162. last.

1163. What is that saying? It's saying

1164. anything the Bible teaches about worship

  1165. and singing

1166. is going to be our portion.

  1167. When we meet Jesus,

1168. everything the psalm writers have

  1169. experienced, everything the Old

1170. Testament saints and New Testament

  1171. saints experience, everything we've

1172. experienced is going to be thrown into

  1173. that song

  1174. in that worship.

1175. May God work in your life and mine to

1176. praise him a new. And what we're going

1177. to do to end this service

1178. is indicative of what we're thinking

  1179. about today.

1180. Let's close and praise the Lord. Thank

1181. you, Father, for the opportunity to be

1182. here today. We pray your blessing on

1183. each of the ones who are out here today.

  1184. We thank you

  1185. for our savior.

1186. We long to be with the choirs of heaven.

1187. That's not all we're going to do when we

1188. sing. We'll have other responsibilities

1189. in the coming kingdom, but

  1190. everything will be worshiped

  1191. with an intensity

1192. and an amazement and joy that we can not

  1193. even imagine. Now,

1194. we'll be singing worthy is the lamb that

  1195. was slain.

1196. receive glory, power, and majesty and

1197. strength. And we'll be singing, "The

  1198. Lord

  1199. is my strength.

  1200. Become my salvation."

1201. For those who know him not, may they

1202. begin to realize even today

  1203. what they're missing out

1204. and come to Christ by your grace in

  1205. Jesus name.

1206. Stand turn of page 43.
