  1. Hey, I've been asked by many of you to tell some Will stories, so can we do that?

  2. Do we have to record this?

  3. Yeah, turn off the stream.

  4. And he...

  5. Love you, buddy.

  6. Love being your dad.

  7. Love being your dad.

  8. Open your Bibles to Colossians.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  9. Chapter 2, I called an audible last night.

  10. Matt and Sean affirmed it, that we'd move away from the mission mindfulness and just look at a message from our recent series from Colossians that will fuel our worship of Christ, both this morning and hopefully in everyday life.

  11. And I hope it encourages you.

  12. I hope it inspires you.

  13. I hope it equips you.

  14. And I hope you leave here feeling more treasured by Jesus than when we began.

  15. I'll leave my glasses to read this.

  16. Colossians 2, 6 to 15.

  17. Could I have someone volunteer to do that?

  18. Great.

  19. Thank you.

  20. Colossians 2, 6 to 15.

  21. Therefore, as you receive Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

  22. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

  23. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him who is the head of all rule and authority.

  24. In him also you were circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.

  25. And you, who were dead in your trespasses, and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands.

  26. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

  27. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame by triumphing over them in him.

  28. Colossians 2, verses 6 to 15.

    Colossians 2:6–15

  29. Thank you.

  30. It's God's word.

  31. Thanks be to God for his word.

  32. Let's pray.

  33. Lord, thank you for how you have already made your presence known to us through the reading of scripture, through the songs which point to and unite our hearts in Christ's beauty and sufficiency and glory.

  34. Now we pray, Lord, by the work of your spirit, through the ministry of your word, through the weakness of my speech, Lord, draw out our faith, our affections, our minds, our attentions to him.

  35. Lord, he is what we long for and desire.

  36. Would you satisfy that longing?

  37. In Jesus' name we pray.

  38. And everyone said?

  39. Amen.

  40. Amen.

  41. We spent the summer of 2022 in a series we called The Core, Keeping Jesus at the Center.

  42. And it was a series based on, expositionally based on one of Paul's smaller letters, the letter to the Colossians.

  43. It's one of my favorite Pauline letters because of the punch it packs and the emphasis it brings to both the supremacy and sufficiency and beauty of Christ,

  44. but also what I've been talking about like a broken record, our connection to him through faith and what we call union or communion with Christ.

  45. In other words, Jesus is the core.

  46. And Paul hammers that nail every line of his precious epistle.

  47. The challenge of my life, maybe it's your life too, is to figure out how to live with a conscious awareness that Jesus is the core.

  48. And this book has helped us focus on that.

  49. So there was an illustration I used in the beginning of the series that I encouraged our church to use in conversations with neighbors

  50. that they are building a relationship with when spiritual topics come to mind.

  51. And you're at a place in that relationship where you can begin to invite and offer an alternative perspective, which this is a whole other series.

  52. Friendship in the Bible is one of the themes in Proverbs.

  53. That means it is an aspect of fearing the Lord and walking in wisdom, but it's an art.

  54. It's not a science.

  55. And yet, clearly, to be someone who fears God, you demonstrate in your friendships with people outside the covenant in Proverbs

  56. and people inside the covenant in the Old Testament, wisdom.

  57. So I've used this.

  58. I've tested this.

  59. It seems to pack a punch.

  60. I'll try it with you.

  61. And you can decide whether it helps you think about not only Jesus as the core,

  62. but how do we live in a way consciously of that as we're loving our neighbors and reaching to them for Christ.

  63. In 1879, the USS Jeanette was captained by Lieutenant George DeLong.

  64. Any of you heard of him?

  65. I think there's a special in National Geographic about him.

  66. Lieutenant George DeLong was an Arctic explorer.

  67. We could have invited him to Wendell this morning.

  68. There was frost on our car and said, this is sort of like the Arctic.

  69. And they set out on an expedition to sail to the North Pole,

  70. seeking to reach it by ship via the Pacific Ocean and through the Bering Straits.

  71. George DeLong.

  72. George DeLong's entire expedition goal was to reach the North Pole by ship based on one particular map.

  73. The map suggested there was a thermometric gateway that had been produced by a warm Pacific current

  74. and that this gateway would open up at a particular time of year.

  75. And what you would find at the North Pole was not a sea of ice,

  76. but rather there was this fair weather passage that ships or ships could pass through to reach the North Pole.

  77. Sadly, DeLong discovered, as did his crew, that the map was completely inaccurate.

  78. There was no such passage.

  79. There was no thermometric gateway.

  80. DeLong was a recognized, celebrated, credentialed explorer.

  81. And so this astonishing mistake in judgment is only, ironically, and compared with his credentials, all the more tragic.

  82. Their ship, of course, became stranded in the ice.

  83. Their expedition became a fight for survival.

  84. Sadly, by the end, half of the crew perished, as did DeLong.

  85. All because they weren't following a map that was accurate.

  86. Friends, on phones and in our world and voices in our heads, there are all kinds of maps, competing maps that say this is where your life is found.

  87. Follow this way.

  88. Here is a life worth living.

  89. Here is a path worth taking.

  90. In the church of Jesus Christ today, were I to flip on YouTube or scan a podcast or even go to a Christian bookstore,

  91. there would be a variety of maps saying this is the way, this is the path where true life is found.

  92. In our culture, there are various and a variety of orientations that are held out saying this is the way you need to live.

  93. Here is found true freedom.

  94. This is what the path you need to take.

  95. Here is your satisfaction.

  96. Whether we realize it or not, and I put myself into this illustration, we are all following a map.

  97. We are all making choices, small and significant, based on the map that says this is the way I want to live.

  98. In fact, whether we realize it or not, the hope of the gospel is that you can bank eternity on Christ and the map he lays out.

  99. But I am wondering, for myself and for you, when it comes to the everyday conscious choices we make, what is the map of your life?

  100. What is the map you are trusting in?

  101. What is the map that guided your choices to come to this retreat?

  102. And what will be the map that you bring up, so to speak, on Monday as you begin a new week?

  103. What is it that steers the orientation of your life?

  104. What is it that steers the orientation of my life?

  105. Colossians provides a unique map.

  106. Four chapters.

  107. And it is the way Jesus Christ has provided through which all of life makes sense.

  108. This is the way to view the world.

  109. When William, Bennett, Jacqueline, and Brittany took driving lessons at the TDA or whatever the name of the school,

  110. TDA had a reputation, that's our driving school, that if you took their school,

  111. they all but guaranteed you would pass the driver's test.

  112. It's a pretty good deal.

  113. I don't think they went so far as to say we'll refund you the money, but they had a reputation that their students never failed the driving test.

  114. I shared this recently with my high school students, and they were like, are you being paid for this?

  115. No, no, there's no reason I'm sharing this story with you.

  116. I don't care what driving school you take.

  117. Just don't hit me in the parking lot once you get your driver's license.

  118. Most dangerous moment in my life is Friday afternoon at 2.35 as I'm pulling out, and high schoolers are going to their weekend.

  119. They're like running me over.

  120. But that's another story.

  121. There's one particular part of the driver's test at the Taunton DMV where driver's testers priptically fail,

  122. and that's, I believe, the three-point turn where you reach that part, and you say, stop the car.

  123. Okay, I want you to park the car, bring it alongside the curb.

  124. And I was in the car for one of those tests, and our student driver went through this ritual,

  125. stops and adjusts the rearview mirror, puts his or her hand behind the headrest,

  126. cocks the head, you know, and holds it for like two seconds, brings the head around,

  127. now looks in the other rearview mirror, and then slowly but gradually makes the turn

  128. and executes this flawless three-point turn.

  129. Driver, evaluator, doesn't say anything.

  130. Person finishes the test, pulls it into the parking lot, and with a big smile,

  131. she says to, this was Bennett's test, you passed.

  132. Then she said this, did you have Mr. Hillsdale as your driver instructor?

  133. Well, yes, I did.

  134. Do you know in 15 years of working for the RV, I have never failed one of his students?

  135. And I said, well, why not?

  136. I think you should fail more of these, these shuckalocks.

  137. Do you see how they drive on Friday afternoon out of the high school parking lot?

  138. They all follow the same steps when it comes to the three-point turn,

  139. and they execute it flawlessly.

  140. That's a good teacher.

  141. Jesus is a good teacher.

  142. Paul's a good teacher.

  143. He's been sent by the ascended Lord as an apostle to give us more than driving skills,

  144. but a map in four short chapters that covers the entire Christian life, our entire life.

  145. And so it heeds us to give attention to it and to make efforts to bring it into everyday life.

  146. I'm going to give you my closing comment now, not because I'm closing, but I'm giving you the verse.

  147. I'm going to put my finger on the verse so you can hold me accountable,

  148. because this, I believe, is the, if you will, the imperative of the passage.

  149. It's one verse, and you're going to find it in verse 12, which was read so beautifully moments ago,

  150. where Paul writes, speaking of what has happened to us when we put our trust in Christ.

  151. Colossians, these were new believers.

  152. Paul has never been to this church.

  153. He is sending this letter to them to encourage their faith in Christ,

  154. and he says this in verse 12,

  155. having been buried with Christ in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith.

  156. There it is.

  157. Through faith in the powerful working of God who raised him from the dead.

  158. We are called to walk with Christ through faith in the fullness of who he is.

  159. We are called to walk with Christ through faith in him and the fullness of who he is.

  160. That's Colossians.

  161. That's the emphasis from beginning to end.

  162. It's through faith that we walk with Christ, of course.

  163. That's how someone becomes a Christian.

  164. But no, it's through faith that we walk with him in this map that he's provided,

  165. in the fullness of him.

  166. Let's look at the passage.

  167. I'll move through it efficiently.

  168. Hopefully, this will leave you with a sense of how much you are treasured because of him,

  169. but also what a privilege it is to live our life in Christ for him.

  170. Verses 6 through 8,

  171. To receive Christ is to be united with Christ every day.

  172. Therefore, as you receive Christ Jesus, the Lord, so walk in him.

  173. Verse 7,

  174. Rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, there it is again,

  175. just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

  176. To receive Christ is to be united with Christ.

  177. There we go.

  178. I have more notes this morning than your vacuum cleaner has attachments,

  179. so give me a second to figure out what I'm going to need.

  180. There we go.

  181. There we go.

  182. Ready to roll.

  183. Paul is teaching in this passage the grammar of the gospel.

  184. There's a grammar to the gospel.

  185. That's what your English teacher or your mom or dad, if you were homeschooled,

  186. or I don't think I learned English grammar until high school because I didn't listen for the first nine or ten years of my public school education.

  187. There is a logic in writing, and there is an order that it follows,

  188. and there is a grammar to make syntax and sentences stand up.

  189. Well, there's a grammar in the gospel, too, and I often confuse it,

  190. and that is that something is true and is said about us,

  191. which is rooted in grace,

  192. before we are then given a demand

  193. to then apply or walk out what is true and said about us because of that grace.

  194. So the gospel grammar is simply this.

  195. The gospel gives you grace.

  196. Amen?

  197. God's riches at Christ's expense, as Jerry Bridges defined it for me 20 years ago

  198. in his marvelous little book, Discipline of Grace.

  199. But often with that grace that we receive unconditionally through faith in Christ,

  200. righteousness in him, dwelt by the Spirit, adoption to his family,

  201. and inheritance that Christ is one, but we receive and enjoy with him,

  202. seated with him in spiritual places,

  203. on and on and on, there are always demands of the gospel.

  204. We call them commands of the gospel.

  205. And we need to keep both, both distinct, but also together,

  206. because they're not separated.

  207. It's the grammar of the gospel.

  208. And you can determine, not a trinity,

  209. but you can determine if a preacher or a pastor or a YouTuber

  210. or a podcaster or an influencer or whatever voice is out there,

  211. are they separating the grammar of the gospel,

  212. or are they keeping it together?

  213. That usually means they're either drifting from Scripture

  214. or they're centering their influencing.

  215. So the grammar of the gospel that we see here

  216. is that when we received Christ,

  217. when we put our trust in Christ

  218. in response to the simple message of the gospel news

  219. that Christ Jesus, the Son of God,

  220. perfect, holy, blameless,

  221. willingly, joyfully offers himself on the cross

  222. as our substitute, as our, if you will, Isaiah's servant,

  223. the Lamb of God taking upon himself our sins,

  224. its shame, its guilt, its condemnation,

  225. the wrath it deserved.

  226. When Jesus did that,

  227. when he died on the cross,

  228. shedding his blood,

  229. giving his life for the forgiveness of sinners' sins,

  230. and was raised again triumphantly,

  231. which we celebrate in these songs,

  232. that he died and rose and is now seated.

  233. When we hear that news

  234. and we are called to turn

  235. from putting our trust in ourselves,

  236. from putting our hope in what we have replaced God with

  237. and repenting of those sins and idolatries

  238. and by God's grace,

  239. repent and through a change of mind and heart,

  240. say, Lord, I believe you,

  241. I surrender to you,

  242. I commit myself to walk with you.

  243. When we do that,

  244. and we've put our trust in Christ,

  245. Paul says we are rooted,

  246. verse 6,

  247. and built up in him.

  248. Paul says we are established in him,

  249. in the faith.

  250. So we should be abounding in thanksgiving.

  251. There are these weeds

  252. at Crossway Church 282

  253. called,

  254. are they called trees of heaven, honey?

  255. They're really like trees of death.

  256. And I've been pulling them

  257. out of the ground now for,

  258. I don't know,

  259. we've been in the building 10, 11 years.

  260. They look,

  261. I first realized they're not poison ivy,

  262. I'm highly allergic,

  263. poison ivy,

  264. I'm sure you are.

  265. So,

  266. I did have permission then to pull them.

  267. But then someone who actually

  268. knows something about nature,

  269. which I know very little,

  270. said,

  271. you know,

  272. these are called trees of heaven

  273. because they grow,

  274. like,

  275. almost like a tree

  276. if you don't pull them.

  277. And I smiled and said,

  278. well,

  279. I've been pulling them for 10 years.

  280. I've been pulling them,

  281. you know,

  282. longer than you've been pulling

  283. these trees of heaven.

  284. I don't know what they're called,

  285. but they don't stand a chance

  286. with me around.

  287. I've run the lawnmower over them.

  288. I've sung as I whip them

  289. with the weed whacker.

  290. I mean,

  291. I'm a tree of heaven exterminator.

  292. She gets that smirk and says,

  293. this is where you need to listen.

  294. Oh.

  295. Apparently,

  296. without getting too much

  297. into the weeds

  298. on this illustration,

  299. the roots of these weeds,

  300. it's called a soft root.

  301. And so,

  302. when you yank them

  303. from the top,

  304. you know what I'm talking about?

  305. They pull down

  306. and they just expand out.

  307. And so,

  308. it's like rabbits.

  309. They multiply.

  310. You pull up the one

  311. and the roots pull down.

  312. They shoot out two shoots

  313. and they've got a pretty,

  314. pretty good survival instinct.

  315. And I said,

  316. oh,

  317. that's why we get more of them.

  318. And so,

  319. she says,

  320. here,

  321. let me show you how to do this.

  322. So,

  323. she then pulls out

  324. of her back pocket.

  325. Not really.

  326. She had it outside.

  327. She pulls out this,

  328. like,

  329. four-foot pitchfork.

  330. And she starts pitchforking

  331. into the ground where,

  332. you know,

  333. mulch ground where

  334. these weeds of heaven are.

  335. And,

  336. I mean,

  337. she's going down

  338. a good two feet.

  339. And lo and behold,

  340. I mean,

  341. this is like that thing

  342. in Stranger Things

  343. that grows in the basin.

  344. What's that called?

  345. What's it called?

  346. It's a plant,

  347. right?

  348. In Stranger Things.

  349. I only watch one season.

  350. Well,

  351. whatever.

  352. There's,

  353. there's like this whole root network

  354. of trees of heaven.

  355. I mean,

  356. the roots are thick.

  357. And there's the little root

  358. that I cut off at the half.

  359. And you can almost see it moving

  360. in that moment,

  361. right?

  362. I mean,

  363. it's moving.

  364. It's got a mind of its own.

  365. It's mocking me.

  366. I said,

  367. ah,

  368. you're an idiot.

  369. You know,

  370. you lose again.

  371. And Rock takes that pitchfork

  372. and she digs it down

  373. and we grab that root

  374. that's way down there

  375. and we pull that sucker out.

  376. And man,

  377. the trees of heaven realize

  378. they have met Galadriel.

  379. You know,

  380. she is,

  381. she is wasting them.

  382. I know I'm mixing,

  383. but

  384. if you're a Christian,

  385. right?

  386. someone has rooted you

  387. in Christ.

  388. Someone has established you.

  389. Yes,

  390. before you were a Christian,

  391. the invitation was clear.

  392. Come to me.

  393. Repent of your sins.

  394. Put your trust in Jesus.

  395. But when you walk through that door

  396. and you turn around

  397. and look at the door

  398. you walked through,

  399. it now says,

  400. you were rooted

  401. and established in him.

  402. And this is where

  403. it really gets crazy.

  404. Before the foundation

  405. of the world was laid.

  406. Hmm.

  407. Hmm.

  408. I came to school one day.

  409. Someone knew I'd been

  410. giving a sermon

  411. and a fellow faculty member

  412. or staff

  413. or I don't think

  414. it was a student

  415. came up to me

  416. and they were very excited

  417. to share with me

  418. what their sermon was about.

  419. And so I,

  420. or message,

  421. they went to church

  422. and I'm going to run into this.

  423. I'm sure this is just

  424. not working for me.

  425. Do you know if I'm amazing?

  426. But,

  427. and I said,

  428. what was it about?

  429. And they said,

  430. my pastor told me,

  431. and I'm like hanging,

  432. you know,

  433. give it to me

  434. that I'm the hero

  435. of my story.

  436. I'm looking around.

  437. I didn't ask

  438. what church they go to,

  439. but I was,

  440. who's the hero

  441. of your story?

  442. I'm thinking,

  443. here she misspoke.

  444. They're going to say Christ,

  445. right?

  446. You know,

  447. God,

  448. Yahweh,

  449. something,

  450. Elohim.

  451. I was such a good message.

  452. Three points,

  453. simple,

  454. and a closing song.

  455. We're the hero

  456. of our stories.

  457. And because

  458. I'm not

  459. very subtle,

  460. I basically said,

  461. did he or she

  462. preach from the Bible?

  463. What passage

  464. of scripture

  465. was that?

  466. You know,

  467. and the person

  468. like cited a scripture,

  469. I said,

  470. hmm.

  471. I said,

  472. I think we should

  473. talk about that.

  474. I mean,

  475. I can't.

  476. Homer,

  477. bell's going to ring

  478. and,

  479. you know,

  480. and don't listen

  481. to my sermons,

  482. but I later met

  483. when I said,

  484. I am not the hero

  485. of my story.

  486. Christ is the hero

  487. of our stories,

  488. right?

  489. And this person agreed,

  490. but that was the message

  491. that day.

  492. You're in control.

  493. You need to take control.

  494. You need to be

  495. at the core

  496. of change in your life.

  497. You're at the core

  498. of any future hope

  499. you can have.

  500. You need to get

  501. busy.

  502. You cannot reconcile

  503. that

  504. with when we receive

  505. Christ

  506. and walk in Christ,

  507. we are rooted

  508. and built up

  509. in Him,

  510. established in the faith

  511. just as you were taught,

  512. abounding in thanksgiving.

  513. In other words,

  514. Christian,

  515. there are only two realities.

  516. There are people

  517. that are in Christ

  518. this morning

  519. according to the New Testament

  520. and there are people

  521. in Adam.

  522. People in Christ

  523. have been rooted

  524. and established

  525. in Him by grace

  526. through faith

  527. in the gospel.

  528. And people in Adam,

  529. as Paul says

  530. in Ephesians 2,

    Ephesians 2:3

  531. verse 3,

  532. are children of wrath.

  533. They are dead

  534. in their sins.

  535. So the question

  536. that Paul then

  537. wants to ask them

  538. as he moves forward

  539. in the text is,

  540. so why add

  541. anything to Him?

  542. Why add

  543. anything to Him

  544. that diminishes Him

  545. or takes away from Him

  546. or substitutes

  547. with Him?

  548. Christ plus this.

  549. Christ is

  550. the Christian life.

  551. Let's look at

  552. the next section.

  553. See to it

  554. that no one

  555. takes you captive

  556. by philosophy

  557. and empty deceit

  558. according to human

  559. tradition,

  560. according to the

  561. elemental spirits

  562. of the world

  563. and not according

  564. to Christ.

  565. For in Christ

  566. the whole fullness

  567. of deity

  568. dwells bodily

  569. and you have been

  570. filled in Him

  571. who is the head

  572. of all rule

  573. and authority.

  574. there seemed

  575. to be what

  576. Paul calls

  577. a philosophy,

  578. a worldview,

  579. a way of thinking

  580. that was capturing

  581. the Colossians'

  582. attention.

  583. See the word

  584. in verse 6

  585. or verse 8,

  586. captive.

  587. That's when someone

  588. who is walking

  589. with Christ,

  590. literally their attention

  591. is kidnapped,

  592. taken captive

  593. by a teaching,

  594. by a premise

  595. or a promise

  596. envisioned

  597. with an orientation

  598. that may feel

  599. like a small change

  600. but in its substance

  601. is like that

  602. tree of heaven.

  603. It's got a deep root

  604. that's going to lure

  605. them away

  606. from Christ.

  607. I was a new believer

  608. at Bucknell

  609. struggling with

  610. understanding grace

  611. and faced with my own

  612. slow growth

  613. and sanctification.

  614. I had enormous

  615. issues.

  616. I was a heavy drinker

  617. in high school.

  618. I was a libertine

  619. in all my relationships

  620. and here I am

  621. a new Christian.

  622. I know I've been

  623. born again

  624. but I'm really

  625. struggling to walk

  626. with Christ

  627. and I met

  628. some sincere

  629. Christians one day

  630. as I was

  631. walking in Lewisburg

  632. and

  633. they

  634. seemed like

  635. I thought I was

  636. radical.

  637. That's why I called

  638. myself that.

  639. I'm a radical Christian.

  640. I'm not just a Christian.

  641. I'm radical.

  642. Have you met me?

  643. We're radicals.

  644. They told me

  645. in so many words

  646. that my Bible

  647. was corrupt.

  648. That it was

  649. full of teachings

  650. and verses

  651. that aren't

  652. in the original text

  653. and they invited me

  654. to come into

  655. their service

  656. that Saturday evening.

  657. We met on Saturday

  658. evening so I said

  659. why would I go to that?

  660. Because I go to New Covenant

  661. in Lewisburg

  662. and we meet on Saturday

  663. and he says

  664. well because

  665. your Bible

  666. is false.

  667. now I'm not

  668. discerning

  669. and I'm just

  670. like it is?

  671. Well what's wrong

  672. with it?

  673. And they began

  674. to tell me things

  675. that the Bible

  676. says that are

  677. not true

  678. and things

  679. that I need

  680. to do

  681. that their Bible

  682. their scripture

  683. says are the truth

  684. and it really

  685. I don't know why

  686. it really

  687. messed me up.

  688. I began

  689. to become

  690. suspicious

  691. and doubt

  692. not only

  693. like my scriptures

  694. which that's deadly

  695. but that then

  696. the people

  697. that I'm walking

  698. with

  699. they aren't really

  700. true Christians

  701. and my pastor

  702. I loved Randy

  703. he was such a gentle

  704. soul

  705. and he was so faithful

  706. asked me out

  707. Randy sometime

  708. how the Lord

  709. used him

  710. and blessed him

  711. as a faithful

  712. pastor

  713. extraordinary story

  714. and it took

  715. me captive

  716. it was a momentary

  717. interaction

  718. but I was like

  719. six months

  720. in detox

  721. over that

  722. because now

  723. and this is for

  724. Google

  725. it's for the internet

  726. that's how old I am

  727. I just was like

  728. suspicious

  729. that God first

  730. and the scripture

  731. second

  732. and that there

  733. was another way

  734. there was another

  735. voice

  736. that I was

  737. missing out

  738. but Paul says

  739. that we can

  740. discover fullness

  741. of spiritual life

  742. in Christ

  743. that's what he says

  744. and then he tells

  745. them

  746. in him

  747. verse 9

  748. so that we would

  749. we would not feel

  750. the need to look

  751. anywhere else

  752. in him

  753. the whole fullness

  754. of deity

  755. dwells bodily

  756. and you have been

  757. filled

  758. in him

  759. listen

  760. I'm on my third

  761. cup of coffee

  762. I feel a little

  763. empty

  764. but spiritually

  765. speaking

  766. I am full

  767. so I want to

  768. grow into that

  769. fullness

  770. I want God

  771. to open the eyes

  772. of my heart

  773. through his word

  774. I want

  775. I want there

  776. to be prayers

  777. praying

  778. I want to pray

  779. I want to

  780. I want to know

  781. the spiritual

  782. life that I

  783. seek

  784. that is found

  785. in Christ

  786. for it is

  787. Christ

  788. who has been

  789. has been made

  790. head of all

  791. rule and authority

  792. and then

  793. Paul goes

  794. on to say

  795. as if to say

  796. from beginning

  797. to end

  798. from beginning

  799. to end

  800. not only in your

  801. life but my

  802. life but from

  803. beginning to end

  804. in the story

  805. of creation

  806. fall

  807. redemption

  808. and consummation

  809. it's always

  810. been about Christ

  811. so when we make

  812. it not about him

  813. we've missed

  814. the picture

  815. all together

  816. I used to think

  817. the picture was

  818. are you charismatic

  819. or not

  820. I remember

  821. telling Wayne

  822. Grudem that

  823. Wayne

  824. I'm having

  825. trouble with

  826. those

  827. cessationists

  828. they're driving

  829. me crazy

  830. and I'm in

  831. pastor's college

  832. I should have

  833. been kicked

  834. out of school

  835. right away

  836. since I struggle

  837. without two

  838. power but there

  839. aren't two

  840. categories of

  841. Christian

  842. we're in

  843. Christ

  844. please pray

  845. for me

  846. because I love

  847. to categorize

  848. Christians

  849. and I'm always

  850. in the categories

  851. that's good

  852. favorable

  853. right

  854. they voted

  855. a certain way

  856. or they didn't

  857. they have

  858. certain cultural

  859. issues that

  860. define them

  861. or they're not

  862. they root

  863. for the Red Sox

  864. praise God

  865. you're a Yankees

  866. fan

  867. but I'm missing

  868. the picture

  869. altogether

  870. for Christians

  871. the picture

  872. is we

  873. are

  874. filled

  875. in

  876. him

  877. and then Paul

  878. goes on to say

  879. in verse 11

  880. this is my

  881. second point

  882. I think

  883. third point

  884. my second point

  885. was to be united

  886. with Christ

  887. to be filled

  888. with Christ

  889. to be united

  890. with Christ

  891. verse 11

  892. 12 is to

  893. receive all the

  894. benefits of his

  895. death and

  896. resurrection

  897. to receive all

  898. the benefits

  899. verse 11

  900. in him

  901. you were also

  902. circumcised

  903. with a

  904. circumcision

  905. made

  906. without hands

  907. by putting off

  908. the body

  909. of the flesh

  910. by the

  911. circumcision

  912. of Christ

  913. verse 12

  914. having been

  915. buried with him

  916. in baptism

  917. in which you

  918. were also

  919. raised with him

  920. through faith

  921. in the powerful

  922. working of God

  923. who raised

  924. Christ

  925. from

  926. the dead

  927. you see that word

  928. circumcision

  929. Jesus was

  930. circumcised

  931. this was the law

  932. at eight days

  933. I believe

  934. for a Jewish

  935. boy

  936. and

  937. he suffered

  938. right

  939. in that act

  940. of circumcision

  941. the removal

  942. of skin

  943. and there was

  944. blood

  945. and it's a

  946. foreshadowing

  947. of the cross

  948. that he

  949. will

  950. as our

  951. Messiah

  952. our representative

  953. literally

  954. have his

  955. body

  956. torn

  957. from him

  958. as he

  959. bears the

  960. sins of the

  961. world

  962. and shed

  963. his blood

  964. and experience

  965. not only

  966. spiritual

  967. not only

  968. physical agony

  969. but

  970. spiritual

  971. agony

  972. as he

  973. becomes

  974. the lamb

  975. whose

  976. death

  977. satisfies

  978. the judgment

  979. of God

  980. in him

  981. it says

  982. we

  983. were

  984. circumcised

  985. in his

  986. death

  987. somehow

  988. we

  989. were

  990. included

  991. we're

  992. distinct

  993. from Christ

  994. he's

  995. unique

  996. but

  997. somehow

  998. in the

  999. mystery

  1000. of our

  1001. union

  1002. when he

  1003. died

  1004. as our

  1005. representative

  1006. wasn't

  1007. you

  1008. over there

  1009. somewhere

  1010. and him

  1011. we are

  1012. somehow

  1013. in the

  1014. mystery

  1015. of that

  1016. union

  1017. included

  1018. in that

  1019. I can't

  1020. figure that

  1021. out

  1022. but Paul

  1023. says it

  1024. repeatedly

  1025. in Romans

  1026. talks about

  1027. it again

  1028. in Ephesians

  1029. not only

  1030. that but

  1031. then it

  1032. says

  1033. having been

  1034. buried

  1035. with him

  1036. in baptism

  1037. he was

  1038. baptized

  1039. by

  1040. John

  1041. the

  1042. Baptist

  1043. and so

  1044. it

  1045. signifies

  1046. not only

  1047. that he

  1048. kept

  1049. the law

  1050. as our

  1051. representative

  1052. and fulfilled

  1053. the law

  1054. as our

  1055. perfect

  1056. representative

  1057. but that

  1058. he would

  1059. die

  1060. and in

  1061. him

  1062. we were

  1063. buried

  1064. with him

  1065. too

  1066. so that

  1067. when he

  1068. was raised

  1069. by faith

  1070. through the

  1071. powerful working

  1072. of God

  1073. we were

  1074. somehow

  1075. raised

  1076. with him

  1077. too

  1078. there is

  1079. in

  1080. Colossians

  1081. and other

  1082. passages

  1083. this

  1084. mystery

  1085. that to

  1086. be filled

  1087. with Christ

  1088. when we

  1089. trust in

  1090. him

  1091. is to

  1092. fellowship

  1093. with him

  1094. in a

  1095. profound

  1096. way

  1097. in other

  1098. words

  1099. before we

  1100. were in

  1101. Adam

  1102. and we

  1103. shared

  1104. nothing

  1105. with him

  1106. now we're

  1107. in Christ

  1108. and we

  1109. somehow

  1110. have shared

  1111. everything

  1112. with him

  1113. so that

  1114. our

  1115. fellowship

  1116. with him

  1117. may

  1118. be

  1119. full

  1120. you

  1121. were

  1122. delivered

  1123. from the

  1124. dominion

  1125. and reign

  1126. of sin

  1127. I was

  1128. delivered

  1129. not from

  1130. its presence

  1131. but from

  1132. its power

  1133. authority

  1134. and rule

  1135. over me

  1136. set free

  1137. to live

  1138. for the

  1139. Lord

  1140. when

  1141. he

  1142. was

  1143. and so

  1144. when my

  1145. conversion

  1146. occurred

  1147. it brings

  1148. kind of

  1149. full

  1150. circle

  1151. this

  1152. spiritual

  1153. reality

  1154. it says

  1155. as well

  1156. that we

  1157. are

  1158. forgiven

  1159. of our

  1160. sins

  1161. through

  1162. the

  1163. canceling

  1164. of our

  1165. record

  1166. of debt

  1167. and you

  1168. were dead

  1169. verse 13

  1170. in your

  1171. trespasses

  1172. and the

  1173. uncircumcision

  1174. of your

  1175. flesh

  1176. God

  1177. made

  1178. alive

  1179. together

  1180. with him

  1181. having

  1182. forgiven

  1183. us

  1184. all

  1185. our

  1186. tresses

  1187. by

  1188. canceling

  1189. the

  1190. record

  1191. of

  1192. debt

  1193. that

  1194. stood

  1195. against

  1196. us

  1197. with

  1198. its

  1199. legal

  1200. demands

  1201. this

  1202. he

  1203. set

  1204. aside

  1205. kneeling

  1206. to the

  1207. cross

  1208. I love

  1209. Matt

  1210. what you

  1211. do

  1212. in your

  1213. services

  1214. somehow

  1215. we have

  1216. to

  1217. benefit

  1218. from

  1219. your

  1220. example

  1221. I love

  1222. that you

  1223. take

  1224. time

  1225. to

  1226. assure

  1227. us

  1228. that our

  1229. sins

  1230. are

  1231. forgiven

  1232. because

  1233. most of

  1234. the

  1235. Christians

  1236. I'm

  1237. pastoring

  1238. and

  1239. myself

  1240. as well

  1241. do not

  1242. live in

  1243. the good

  1244. of that

  1245. assurance

  1246. they

  1247. live in

  1248. the good

  1249. or the

  1250. reality

  1251. of

  1252. I'm

  1253. a

  1254. sinner

  1255. I've

  1256. sinned

  1257. I'm

  1258. sinning

  1259. constantly

  1260. now

  1261. there's

  1262. truth

  1263. in

  1264. that

  1265. because

  1266. we're

  1267. broken

  1268. we're

  1269. fallen

  1270. but

  1271. there

  1272. needs

  1273. to be

  1274. space

  1275. and

  1276. places

  1277. to

  1278. rejoice

  1279. in

  1280. I'm

  1281. forgiven

  1282. I'm

  1283. free

  1284. somebody

  1285. say

  1286. hallelujah

  1287. because

  1288. I'm

  1289. in

  1290. Christ

  1291. I'm

  1292. in

  1293. Christ

  1294. I'm

  1295. free

  1296. from

  1297. guilt

  1298. I'm

  1299. free

  1300. from

  1301. shame

  1302. I've

  1303. been

  1304. delivered

  1305. from

  1306. my

  1307. past

  1308. not

  1309. its

  1310. influence

  1311. perhaps

  1312. but

  1313. certainly

  1314. the

  1315. charges

  1316. last

  1317. week

  1318. I'm

  1319. on my

  1320. high

  1321. school

  1322. reunion

  1323. I'm

  1324. the

  1325. only

  1326. Christian

  1327. on

  1328. the

  1329. call

  1330. they

  1331. think

  1332. I'm

  1333. a

  1334. wacko

  1335. they

  1336. still

  1337. like

  1338. me

  1339. I've

  1340. shared

  1341. gospel

  1342. with

  1343. all

  1344. of

  1345. them

  1346. some

  1347. of

  1348. them

  1349. more

  1350. than

  1351. once

  1352. they

  1353. still

  1354. think

  1355. I'm

  1356. a

  1357. crazy

  1358. man

  1359. but

  1360. when

  1361. I

  1362. have

  1363. the

  1364. opportunity

  1365. I

  1366. don't

  1367. because

  1368. at least

  1369. they have

  1370. heard the

  1371. gospel

  1372. to announce

  1373. to them

  1374. yeah I'm

  1375. a sinner

  1376. I've

  1377. done

  1378. I've done

  1379. things

  1380. I

  1381. shouldn't

  1382. have

  1383. done

  1384. and

  1385. you

  1386. know

  1387. some

  1388. of

  1389. those

  1390. things

  1391. some

  1392. of

  1393. you

  1394. participated

  1395. in

  1396. them

  1397. some

  1398. of

  1399. them

  1400. I did

  1401. them

  1402. to you

  1403. and my

  1404. past

  1405. is

  1406. but I'm

  1407. forgiven

  1408. there's

  1409. no shame

  1410. there's

  1411. no guilt

  1412. there's

  1413. no condemnation

  1414. I

  1415. I

  1416. think

  1417. a

  1418. majority

  1419. of

  1420. Christians

  1421. do

  1422. not

  1423. benefit

  1424. from

  1425. the

  1426. assurance

  1427. that

  1428. you

  1429. guys

  1430. provide

  1431. in

  1432. your

  1433. liturgy

  1434. that

  1435. when

  1436. you

  1437. declare

  1438. through

  1439. faith

  1440. in

  1441. Christ

  1442. we're

  1443. forgiven

  1444. we can

  1445. walk

  1446. differently

  1447. yeah there's

  1448. still growth

  1449. to do

  1450. there's

  1451. progressive

  1452. sanctification

  1453. but the

  1454. guilt

  1455. and the

  1456. debt

  1457. and the

  1458. shame

  1459. it's

  1460. gone

  1461. because

  1462. I'm

  1463. in

  1464. Christ

  1465. I have

  1466. a new

  1467. identity

  1468. I have

  1469. a new

  1470. identity

  1471. and so

  1472. do

  1473. we

  1474. it's

  1475. glorious

  1476. because

  1477. the

  1478. charges

  1479. against

  1480. me

  1481. and

  1482. against

  1483. you

  1484. were

  1485. nailed

  1486. and

  1487. we

  1488. can

  1489. choose

  1490. to

  1491. live

  1492. out

  1493. of

  1494. that

  1495. fullness

  1496. of

  1497. grace

  1498. and

  1499. then

  1500. he

  1501. talks

  1502. freedom

  1503. through

  1504. Christ

  1505. and I'll

  1506. end

  1507. with

  1508. this

  1509. that

  1510. he's

  1511. disarmed

  1512. the

  1513. rulers

  1514. and

  1515. authorities

  1516. those

  1517. spiritual

  1518. realities

  1519. that were

  1520. stacked

  1521. up

  1522. against

  1523. us

  1524. he

  1525. has

  1526. broken

  1527. them

  1528. he

  1529. has

  1530. defeated

  1531. them

  1532. he

  1533. has

  1534. brought

  1535. them

  1536. to

  1537. open

  1538. shame

  1539. these

  1540. forces

  1541. that

  1542. bind

  1543. people

  1544. in

  1545. their

  1546. guilt

  1547. and

  1548. shame

  1549. it's

  1550. amazing

  1551. what

  1552. Jesus

  1553. Christ

  1554. has

  1555. done

  1556. for

  1557. us

  1558. so

  1559. as we

  1560. conclude

  1561. at least

  1562. my portion

  1563. of this

  1564. tree

  1565. the question

  1566. that's

  1567. begging

  1568. to be

  1569. answered

  1570. by you

  1571. with the

  1572. help of

  1573. the

  1574. Holy

  1575. Spirit

  1576. is

  1577. what

  1578. fills

  1579. your

  1580. life

  1581. and

  1582. what

  1583. fills

  1584. mine

  1585. is

  1586. it

  1587. Christ

  1588. if

  1589. it

  1590. is

  1591. then

  1592. all

  1593. of

  1594. the

  1595. riches

  1596. of

  1597. his

  1598. grace

  1599. should

  1600. be

  1601. invading

  1602. our

  1603. life

  1604. so

  1605. that

  1606. we

  1607. with

  1608. him

  1609. would

  1610. grow

  1611. into

  1612. this

  1613. progressive

  1614. understanding

  1615. and not

  1616. be taken

  1617. captive

  1618. by the

  1619. maps

  1620. and

  1621. orientations

  1622. and

  1623. philosophies

  1624. that

  1625. would

  1626. rob

  1627. him

  1628. of

  1629. his

  1630. centrality

  1631. we've

  1632. been

  1633. given

  1634. the

  1635. map

  1636. and

  1637. it's

  1638. almost

  1639. just

  1640. too

  1641. audacious

  1642. to

  1643. believe

  1644. but

  1645. by

  1646. God's

  1647. grace

  1648. and

  1649. for

  1650. his

  1651. glory

  1652. Trinity

  1653. may

  1654. we

  1655. together

  1656. take

  1657. hold

  1658. of

  1659. this

  1660. map

  1661. that

  1662. leads

  1663. us

  1664. to

  1665. Christ

  1666. because

  1667. it does

  1668. lead us

  1669. somewhere

  1670. do you

  1671. know where

  1672. it leads

  1673. us

  1674. it

  1675. leads

  1676. us

  1677. to

  1678. Jesus

  1679. and

  1680. that's

  1681. why

  1682. God

  1683. brought

  1684. you

  1685. to

  1686. Trinity

  1687. yeah

  1688. it

  1689. was

  1690. fun

  1691. seeing

  1692. your

  1693. friend

  1694. get

  1695. mayonnaise

  1696. all over

  1697. them

  1698. yesterday

  1699. I

  1700. agree

  1701. but

  1702. even

  1703. better

  1704. oh

  1705. Lord

  1706. we

  1707. are

  1708. in

  1709. you

  1710. you

  1711. are

  1712. in

  1713. us

  1714. we

  1715. pray

  1716. open

  1717. the

  1718. eyes

  1719. of

  1720. our

  1721. heart

  1722. to

  1723. see

  1724. even

  1725. more

  1726. clearly

  1727. not

  1728. the

  1729. foggy

  1730. windshield

  1731. of

  1732. day

  1733. to

  1734. day

  1735. life

  1736. as

  1737. real

  1738. as

  1739. those

  1740. are

  1741. not

  1742. the

  1743. not

  1744. the

  1745. guilt

  1746. or

  1747. shame

  1748. of

  1749. the

  1750. past

  1751. or

  1752. present

  1753. but

  1754. the

  1755. new

  1756. creation

  1757. of

  1758. being

  1759. hidden

  1760. in

  1761. you

  1762. Colossians

  1763. 3

  1764. of

  1765. being

  1766. filled

  1767. with

  1768. Christ

  1769. Colossians

  1770. 2

  1771. of

  1772. having

  1773. the

  1774. hope

  1775. of

  1776. glory

  1777. Christ

  1778. in

  1779. us

  1780. that

  1781. we

  1782. would

  1783. see

  1784. him

  1785. Jesus

  1786. this

  1787. salvation

  1788. you have

  1789. provided

  1790. it's not

  1791. just

  1792. plentiful

  1793. it is

  1794. blessed

  1795. so we

  1796. thank you

  1797. for this

  1798. grace

  1799. Lord

  1800. we

  1801. abound

  1802. in

  1803. thanksgiving

  1804. for your

  1805. mercy

  1806. in light

  1807. of your

  1808. cross

  1809. and we

  1810. pray

  1811. Lord

  1812. we would

  1813. be

  1814. mission

  1815. mindful

  1816. as we

  1817. are with

  1818. others

  1819. this week

  1820. that this

  1821. awaits

  1822. them

  1823. help

  1824. us

  1825. help

  1826. us

  1827. Lord

  1828. to display

  1829. your

  1830. character

  1831. as well

  1832. as in

  1833. our

  1834. words

  1835. point

  1836. clearly

  1837. to the

  1838. hope

  1839. of our

  1840. salvation

  1841. we pray

  1842. this in

  1843. Jesus name

  1844. and everyone

  1845. said

  1846. amen
