  1. know this. Some of your visitors may

  2. not. We are in a new series. It's not a

  3. book study series, which we've done

  4. mostly in our many years here. It's a

  5. verse series where we're picking out a

  6. major verse in different books of the

  7. Bible and focusing on that verse. That's

  8. what we're doing. And we are in the book

  9. of Numbers. So, this is our fourth

  10. message in that series. If you'd like to

  11. get on YouTube or Rumble or the church

  12. website or Facebook, you can get the

  13. other three messages,

  14. they are there. We're thankful for those

  15. that are working with that.

  16. I'm interested in the book of Numbers,

  17. the fourth book in the Bible.

  18. I'm interested in numbers chapter 6

    Numbers 6 chapter mention

  19. and verse 22

  20. 27.

  21. And I would emphasize that when I'm

  22. picking these verses, I'm picking verses

  23. that I believe will open up the rest of

  24. the Bible to. They're not necessarily

  25. the main verse in the book, but they're

  26. a verse that I believe will help us

  27. understand not just that book, but the

  28. rest of the Bible. I call them keys. Key

  29. verses. And so, we're making a key ring

  30. in this series. If I live long enough,

  31. we'll have 66 keys.

  32. Oh, wow. Anyway,

  33. Numbers chapter 6 verse 22- 27.

    Numbers 6:22–27

  34. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

  35. "Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons."

  36. Who's Aaron?

  37. Moses's brother. He's the high priest.

  38. And his sons follow him in the

  39. priesthood.

  40. speak unto Aaron and unto his sons,

  41. saying, In this way you shall bless the

  42. children of Israel, saying unto them,

  43. The Lord bless thee and keep thee. The

  44. Lord make his face to shine upon thee,

  45. and be gracious unto thee. The Lord lift

  46. up his countenance upon thee, and give

  47. thee peace.

  48. and they shall put my name upon the

  49. children of Israel and I

  50. will bless them.

  51. That's our text for this morning. The

  52. ironic blessing.

  53. Father, we thank you for your word. We

  54. pray that you'd help us to speak and

  55. each of us to hear as those are going to

  56. give account as those that are hearing

  57. for eternity.

  58. We pray, Father, you'd give us a hearing

  59. ear and a and a hearing heart.

  60. Jesus name. Amen.

  61. >> Well, there are many memorable and

  62. significant

  63. uh

  64. texts in the book of numbers that we

  65. could pick. This wasn't the only one we

  66. could pick. There are several others. It

  67. was like I read through the book of

  68. Numbers again and just tried to think,

  69. what are some other vital texts in this

  70. book? And of course, it didn't take me

  71. long to find several.

  72. Uh

  73. Moses lifting up the serpent in the

  74. wilderness. That's a big one, isn't it?

  75. That has great relevance because if you

  76. want to understand John 3:16, you got to

    John 3:16

  77. understand John 3:14

    John 3:14

  78. and 15. And it illustrates ahead of time

  79. the cross of Calvary. That is a very big

  80. one.

  81. And

  82. Uh, so that one's important. Aaron's rod

  83. that budded.

  84. Big deal.

  85. That is reflective

  86. ahead of time in biblical typology

  87. of the resurrection of Christ validating

  88. his priesthood.

  89. Can't go back and teach all of that.

  90. There's an argument of who gets to run

  91. the show. And Aaron's rod budded and

  92. life came where there was death. because

  93. the Bible's just one story even though

  94. it's many stories and Aaron's rod that

  95. buted is a beautiful prefiguring

  96. uh of the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  97. or Kora's rebellion and Balum Balam's

  98. efforts to curse Israel

  99. that

  100. there's a lot in there besides the

  101. donkey talking and uh so it's important

  102. any of those could be chosen

  103. and our great texts in the Old

  104. Testament.

  105. But we're looking at the keys. We're

  106. looking at ones that are very, very

  107. special. And we can pick the others

  108. because they are. But as I thought about

  109. it, I believe this is the one we should

  110. have. The Bible says the law is a shadow

  111. of good things to come. Hebrews 10 1.

  112. By the law, it means the first five

  113. books of the Bible. Pentitude.

  114. It's a shadow of good things to come.

  115. Now, Peter Pan couldn't find his shadow,

  116. but he was a fictional person.

  117. And we can find the shadow of good

  118. things to come. It's right here in our

  119. Bible. You don't have to look for it. We

  120. just have to look at it

  121. and absorb it.

  122. Now here we have the responsibility of

  123. the of Aaron and his sons to give a

  124. blessing

  125. called the ironic blessing.

  126. What does all this signify?

  127. You and I have heard people say things

  128. like this.

  129. I was blessed with good health.

  130. Ever heard anybody say that? I was

  131. blessed with a strong constitution.

  132. Uh, I was blessed with a good wife. I've

  133. been blessed

  134. with a good job.

  135. Uh,

  136. those kinds of things. I've been blessed

  137. with a good church.

  138. God's blessed me with many children.

  139. are good neighbors.

  140. What are people saying when they don't

  141. just say it, but they use the word

  142. bless?

  143. Well, some might just be u doing what a

  144. lot of people down south do. Bless your

  145. heart.

  146. And I'm told that when a southern woman

  147. tells you that, it's not a good thing.

  148. She's usually she's uh usually exposing

  149. something that you've done and saying in

  150. a very interesting way.

  151. I'm not talking about that.

  152. But people say it that don't even think

  153. about what it means. But if you think

  154. about what it means to be blessed by God

  155. is to have God working on your behalf.

  156. And to be cursed by God is the opposite.

  157. If you're blessed by God, it's because

  158. God's for you. If you're cursed by God,

  159. it's because God's against you. And if

  160. you had to choose the two, which one

  161. would you choose?

  162. And so when people are saying, "I've

  163. been blessed by this," they're actually

  164. giving God the glory for whatever good

  165. they got.

  166. I was blessed with

  167. a lot of money. I was blessed with a

  168. good house.

  169. They're giving God the glory. They're

  170. giving God the credit. And they're

  171. recognizing, if they understand what

  172. they're saying, that life is not a

  173. do-it-yourself project.

  174. Frank Soninatris might want to say, "I

  175. did it my way." Sing that. The

  176. Christians know better.

  177. We We have a God

  178. to be related to to be under his

  179. authority and under his blessing. And we

  180. look to him.

  181. halfbrother of Jesus who wrote the book

  182. of James said, "Every good gift

  183. and every perfect gift is from above and

  184. comes down from the father of lights."

  185. If you got something good, it came from

  186. God.

  187. Wasn't an accident. Wasn't a

  188. coincidence.

  189. Every good gift and every perfect gift

  190. comes down from above. That's what you

  191. want.

  192. We're not even smart enough to know

  193. what's good for us, right?

  194. And we and and we have nothing we

  195. haven't received.

  196. And in John 3:27, Jesus said, "A man can

    John 3:27

  197. receive nothing except it be given him

  198. from heaven."

  199. And in John 15:5, Jesus said, "Apart

    John 15:5

  200. from me, you can do nothing." Well, you

  201. can do stuff, but nothing that lasts,

  202. nothing that's important, nothing that's

  203. you need God 24/7.

  204. And in Psalm 16:2, it says, I say to the

    Psalms 16:2

  205. Lord, you are my Lord. Apart from you, I

  206. have no good thing.

  207. Apart from you, I have no good thing.

  208. So we see the hand of God in the glove

  209. of our history.

  210. We see his providence protecting,

  211. providing,

  212. and all of that kind of thing.

  213. And a Christian knows if God doesn't

  214. give it, I won't get it.

  215. And if I got it, it wouldn't be worth

  216. having.

  217. Now, you've heard me quote this proverb

  218. many, many times. There's three of them

  219. that are in the book of Proverbs on the

  220. same subject.

  221. I'll just quote this one. Every one of

  222. us needs to know this.

  223. Proverbs 3:33. You can get the address

    Proverbs 3:33

  224. on that one.

  225. The Lord's curse is on the house of the

  226. wicked,

  227. but he blesses the dwelling

  228. of the righteous.

  229. Every home, I'm not talking about a

  230. building now, every family

  231. is either under the curse of God

  232. or the blessing.

  233. You think you can have a good family

  234. apart from God, but he might be merciful

  235. and you might have had that,

  236. but it's not what it would have been if

  237. you'd had a Christian.

  238. Every house is either cursed by God or

  239. blessed.

  240. Life is not a do it, do it, do it

  241. yourself project.

  242. And you can't curse those God has

  243. blessed. That doesn't mean those God

  244. blesses have it easy or everything

  245. always goes the way they want it to go.

  246. That's not what I see in the Bible.

  247. people God blessed still had plenty of

  248. trials and troubles and difficulties but

  249. there was blessing in

  250. remember Jacob classic example Joseph is

  251. not Simeon is not and you want to take

  252. Benjamin away all these things are

  253. against me no

  254. they're all for you Jacob you just

  255. haven't figured that out

  256. So very very important. You remember

  257. Balum the false prophet. The false

  258. prophet that is actually whose name

  259. actually is found outside the Bible at

  260. that right time. He's very famous. He

  261. had a worldwide reputation

  262. in the ancient near east.

  263. He's a false prophet. He wasn't a true

  264. prophet.

  265. But God tapped him on the shoulder and

  266. and dealt with him. And he was trying he

  267. was Balon was a prophet for hire. He was

  268. like the wire paladin of the old west uh

  269. uh black and white movies. Have gun will

  270. travel. He had he had prophecy will

  271. travel.

  272. You pay me enough money I'll manipulate

  273. the gods for you.

  274. Now, he was crooked as a dog's leg, but

  275. God tapped him anyway.

  276. And he got hired by a king named Balik.

  277. I'm nervous about these people coming

  278. across my border.

  279. I want you to curse.

  280. Abram went. Money was good. God stopped

  281. him. Almost died.

  282. But God let him go forward after he

  283. corrected him. But every time Balam

  284. opened his mouth to curse him, he

  285. blessed him instead. So much as his

  286. employer said, "I paid you to bless him.

  287. You've c I paid you to curse him. And

  288. every time you try to curse him, you

  289. bless him. You've done it five times.

  290. This is enough. You're not getting paid.

  291. those God blesses

  292. and be unbs.

  293. Having the blessing of God is not

  294. something we earn, not something we

  295. deserve.

  296. It's something God gives in his mercy.

  297. And people today live their lives under

  298. the sunshine of God's blessing or the

  299. thunderstorm of his curse.

  300. Maybe you've wondered, "Why is my life

  301. the way it is,

  302. trying hard,

  303. every time I turn around,

  304. it's a dead end."

  305. And we Christians even have some of

  306. that. But something we know is I thank

  307. God for unanswered prayer. I thank God

  308. for the times he didn't do what I wanted

  309. him to do. I thank God that he's leading

  310. when he blesses.

  311. I thank God for the disappointments

  312. and the pain,

  313. but God didn't let me have my way.

  314. And I learned

  315. I'm under the sunshine of his blessing.

  316. He loves me too much to let me have what

  317. I think I need. At that point, he just

  318. slams the door on my face and says,

  319. "Nope, that's not for you."

  320. have actually learned to thank God as

  321. much, maybe even more, for shut doors

  322. than open ones.

  323. Speaking as someone who's had plenty of

  324. shut doors,

  325. God's blessing is what? He doesn't let

  326. us get what we think we want. It's not

  327. the right thing. He slams.

  328. Now in number six, chapter 6 verse 22-

  329. 27,

  330. we've got God instructing Aaron and his

  331. sons on how to give a blessing

  332. to the nation.

  333. This was a formal thing. This was part

  334. of their job.

  335. And this very brief portion of scripture

  336. gives us three foundational truths about

  337. blessing. Someone said Ian Dwed, a

  338. Presbyterian

  339. Old Testament scholar.

  340. Number one, where blessing comes from.

  341. Number two, what blessing is. And number

  342. three, how we can receive it.

  343. Pretty good. I like that so much. I'm

  344. adopting his outline.

  345. Where blessing comes from, what blessing

  346. is, and how we can receive it.

  347. And if we reread this section, you're

  348. going to see the word Lord appears three

  349. times. Capital L O R D.

  350. Not capital L, little O, little R,

  351. little D. It's a different Hebrew word.

  352. And it repeats,

  353. it's a blessing that comes from the

  354. triune God.

  355. Let's read it again with that idea.

  356. Watch the word Lord.

  357. Verse 23. Speak to Aaron and say to his

  358. son, saying, "In this way you you bless

  359. the children of Israel, saying to them,

  360. the Lord, there it is. There's a word.

  361. The Lord bless thee and keep thee. The

  362. Lord make his face to shine upon thee

  363. and be gracious to thee. The Lord lift

  364. up his countenance upon thee and give

  365. you peace."

  366. Where do you get your blessing?

  367. You hope you get it from the Lord

  368. because then you are blessed.

  369. But the ironic priest had that job to

  370. pronounce this blessing

  371. in the tabernacle and later the temple.

  372. And Dwed said some have never

  373. experienced this blessing of God.

  374. They've never felt his favor or they've

  375. never given their life to Christ.

  376. They've never submitted their heart to

  377. him. The Father's favor is not given

  378. indiscriminately to all humanity, just

  379. as the ironic blessing was not to be

  380. administered to all peoples. It's only

  381. given to those whom he calls his own

  382. people in Christ. If you've never done

  383. so, you need to come to Christ today and

  384. receive the blessing of new life under

  385. the smile of God.

  386. Confess your sins. Repent of all the

  387. ways in which you've sought to

  388. manufacture your own life of blessing

  389. and bow down today to God's only way to

  390. blessing. Receive God's favor in Jesus

  391. Christ. It's the only way to true

  392. blessing and peace. A blessing that will

  393. last for all time.

  394. So now on this subject and I'm I'm just

  395. going to quote verses. I'm not going to

  396. look them up, okay? Just for time sake,

  397. I can't help but go back to the book of

  398. Genesis

  399. and Adam and Eve.

  400. Remember Genesis uh chapter 1 and uh

  401. verse 26 to 26 28 the first marriage it

  402. says God blessed them

  403. and said to them be fruitful multiply

  404. and fill the earth and take dominion

  405. over it. You got a job to do. is to have

  406. babies and reach out around the world

  407. and take care of the animals.

  408. But he blessed them. It says he blessed

  409. them.

  410. Bible starts out with God blessing man

  411. and then man falls and then you get into

  412. this curse thing

  413. when man gets into sin through the

  414. serpent

  415. and you say, "Well, I don't believe in

  416. the Bible because I don't believe snakes

  417. talk." This one did.

  418. This one still does.

  419. Yes, there was a physical snake, but

  420. there was a spiritual snake there, too.

  421. And his name, it's that old serpent

  422. called the devil. And the devil does

  423. talk. And he gets people to listen.

  424. And God said to the serpent, "Cursed are

  425. you above all cattle, above all animals.

  426. You just lost your legs. Apparently

  427. physical serpents

  428. had legs at one time. God took them

  429. away. You're going to crawl on your

  430. belly the rest of your life. That's the

  431. physical snake. But the spiritual snake,

  432. the seed of the woman is going to bruise

  433. the serpent's head. She'll bruise his

  434. heel.

  435. And remember of Adam and Eve, cursed is

  436. the ground for your sin.

  437. You did it. You found your own nest.

  438. My sister, when we were little, she kind

  439. of motherthered us, although I was older

  440. than her. My brother was a couple years

  441. younger than her, but we did something

  442. bad. I don't remember what it was. It

  443. was We were usually doing something

  444. honory. And my sister mixed up her words

  445. and she said, "You buttered your bread.

  446. Now lay in it.

  447. Somehow in her young mind she got those

  448. things mixed up. You know,

  449. you made your bed now laying. You

  450. buttered your bread now.

  451. Never let her forget that.

  452. But Adam and Eve got us in trouble. This

  453. world is not the way it used to be.

  454. Garden of Eden.

  455. It's there's a curse.

  456. Curse it is the ground. You're going to

  457. have to earn your money with your you're

  458. living with the sweat of your brow.

  459. And you women, you got to have babies.

  460. It's going to be painful.

  461. Wouldn't have been that. You just done

  462. what I said.

  463. So the God that blesses is now the God

  464. that curses.

  465. And the pre flood world were very much

  466. aware of that.

  467. Noah's father said, "This one is going

  468. to help deliver us from the curse of the

  469. ground that God cursed."

  470. They lived under that.

  471. They were very aware of that. That's

  472. Genesis 5:28 and 29

    Genesis 5:28

  473. and so forth and so on as you go through

  474. the Bible.

  475. That word blessing and curse is used a

  476. lot.

  477. Are we getting the message?

  478. People, nations, families either are

  479. under the cloud of God's judgment or the

  480. sunshine of his mercy.

  481. That doesn't mean people under the cloud

  482. can't have some good days, but they're

  483. they don't have God's favor.

  484. Doesn't mean people under the blessing

  485. don't have some bad days, but even in

  486. the bad days, we have God's favor.

  487. And we know something. Paul knew it. All

  488. things work together for good to those

  489. that love God, to those that are called

  490. according to his purpose. He didn't say

  491. they were all going to be good. It's

  492. they're all going to work together for

  493. good.

  494. So, are we getting the message?

  495. Now, you can't read the story about

  496. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob without

  497. understanding

  498. they were very interested in this

  499. blessing curse.

  500. And remember Esau? Oh, I kind of like

  501. Esau. He was a profane person, but he

  502. was nicer than Jacob.

  503. Jacob was a scoundrel.

  504. But Jacob stole Esau's

  505. blessing.

  506. That wasn't the worst thing.

  507. The worst thing that was the dad who was

  508. giving the blessing was fighting God. He

  509. was he was fighting God's word about

  510. Isaac. He wanted to go to Esau

  511. when God said he was going to go to

  512. Isaac.

  513. Now to all modern man all this stuff

  514. is just a little bunch of do about

  515. nothing.

  516. It's not

  517. the Nelson Bible of dictionary of the

  518. Bible said the act of of blessing or

  519. bless the act of declaring or wishing

  520. God's favor and goodness on others. The

  521. blessing is not only the good effect of

  522. words. It also has the power to bring

  523. them to pass.

  524. In the Bible, important persons bless

  525. those with less power influence. The

  526. patriarchs pronounced benefits on their

  527. children, often near their own deaths,

  528. even if spoken by mistake. Once a

  529. blessing was given, it couldn't be taken

  530. back.

  531. And Isaac found that out.

  532. So, what is this blessing thing

  533. is so important that the book of Genesis

  534. is filled with it? I'm not even quoting

  535. all the verses on it.

  536. It's conveying a gift by a potent

  537. utterance.

  538. In blessing man, God bestows good at at

  539. the time or later. Sometimes God says

  540. you're going to get it, but you don't

  541. get it right away.

  542. And another fellow said, "The Old

  543. Testament sees God as the only source of

  544. blessing.

  545. Those who are wrongly related to God can

  546. neither bless nor be blessed.

  547. What did God say to Abraham? In you

  548. all nations of the earth will be

  549. blessed. This is a big deal, Abraham.

  550. You're going to be blessed.

  551. Nations going to come out of you, but

  552. all nations somehow are going to be

  553. blessed. And that's a prediction of

  554. Jesus.

  555. Most people seek blessing in the wrong

  556. place.

  557. They think, "I've got a rich relative

  558. and if I treat him nice, they'll be a

  559. blessing to me." Maybe, maybe not.

  560. Or if I can earn enough money, I'll I'll

  561. be blessed. No, that that's not how much

  562. money you got or don't have.

  563. Finding good good grades. Yeah, that

  564. that good greed is important, but that's

  565. not everything. Good job's important.

  566. It's not everything. You have the smile

  567. of God.

  568. Now, God knows the best people are

  569. sinners. He knows all that. And the

  570. people that the ironic blessing were

  571. said to were sinners just like others.

  572. And one writer said of this section in

  573. this is a beautiful benediction in the

  574. style of excellent Semitic poetry with a

  575. message much needed

  576. by those facing the uncertainties and

  577. hostile forces of present living. It

  578. tells of God's goodness in caring for

  579. and protecting his people.

  580. I'm glad I got a shepherd. Aren't you?

  581. David's bragging about his shepherd. You

  582. know what Psalm 23 is? is David the

  583. sheep bragging about his shepherd.

  584. Nobody's got a shepherd like I got.

  585. I want to tell you about my shepherd.

  586. He experienced the blessing of God.

  587. Another

  588. Old Testament writer said, uh,

  589. grammatically, there's no need to repeat

  590. God's name, but the repetition

  591. emphasizes that the Lord is the source

  592. of all Israel's blessing. Saying it

  593. emphatically, the Lord, the Lord, the

  594. Lord.

  595. And so this benediction is quite

  596. important.

  597. It's a wish for the future.

  598. It's a beautiful thing God's the author

  599. of. Now, as I said, there's no neutral

  600. status.

  601. You're either under God's blessing or

  602. under God's curse. And by the way, the U

  603. there is singular.

  604. Priests are blessing the whole nation,

  605. but they don't use the plural U. They

  606. use the singular U. In this ironic

  607. blessing, each individual's

  608. singled out.

  609. Nobody gets lost in the crowd.

  610. Everyone is provided for. That's good.

  611. And it's in the context of the earlier

  612. section of a Nazerite vow. Those are

  613. kind of the super saints. I'll deny

  614. myself this. I won't I'll cut my hair. I

  615. won't do this. I won't do that.

  616. Uh

  617. super saints.

  618. But this is given to everybody, the

  619. general population.

  620. No one is left out.

  621. And while the words are directed to the

  622. entire community, the pronouns are

  623. singular. This is characteristic of

  624. covenantal language. The Lord blessed

  625. the whole by blessing the individuals

  626. and he blesses the individuals by

  627. blessing the whole. What does Athens

  628. Bible Church need the most? Oh, if

  629. somebody give us a million dollars, that

  630. would help.

  631. Or if a hundred more people would walk

  632. in here next Sunday, that would help.

  633. You know what we need more than anything

  634. else?

  635. The blessing of God.

  636. You got all the rest of the stuff and

  637. you don't have that,

  638. you can do nothing.

  639. very important.

  640. Now, let's look at some of let's look at

  641. the bit the the bigger picture here. Um

  642. Jesus while on earth

  643. blessed his disciples.

  644. You know the last thing he did

  645. on earth after he was resurrected and

  646. spent 40 days with him showing him he

  647. was alive. put his hands out and blessed

  648. them and went to heaven.

  649. Then we think, yeah, well, what's all

  650. this about? Well, it's important.

  651. Luke 24:50-53,

    Luke 24:50–53

  652. he blessed them.

  653. The Apostle Paul in Ephesians says,

  654. "God's blessed us with all spiritual

  655. blessings in Christ."

  656. He repeats that in Ephesians 1 over and

  657. over again.

  658. And in Ruth 2:4, Ruth pronounces

    Ruth 2:4

  659. blessing on Boaz. It's natural for her.

  660. God bless you. It wasn't just a word to

  661. say. It was something she was conscious

  662. of. And how about the uh

  663. how about the famous sermon on the

  664. mount?

  665. How about the beatitude?

  666. Turn with me to Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  667. Some of you know this. Some of you heard

  668. me teach this.

  669. In the sermon on the mount, it starts

  670. out with the biatitudes.

  671. Bear with me.

  672. And seeing the multitude, he went up

  673. into a mountain. And when he was seated,

  674. his disciples came to him.

  675. It was my privilege to stand on the

  676. sermon on the mount

  677. where this took place.

  678. There's enough for plenty of people. His

  679. disciples came to him and he opened his

  680. mouth and taught them saying blessed

  681. verse three blessed verse four blessed

  682. verse five blessed verse six. Those are

  683. the biatitudes.

  684. And these are not different kinds of

  685. people.

  686. He's describing

  687. people who are saved.

  688. So it's not like you get the one. You

  689. get a blessing for being poor in spirit.

  690. Somebody else gets the blessing for

  691. mourning. Somebody else gets a blessing

  692. for meekness. No, no. These this is a

  693. description of saved people.

  694. Blessed are the poor in spirit. That's

  695. those are so poor they don't trust

  696. themselves for salvation. They're like a

  697. beggar. They just take ask God to give

  698. it to them. Theirs is the kingdom of

  699. heaven. Blessed are they that mourn,

  700. mourning over their sin, for they'll be

  701. comforted. Blessed are the meek, for

  702. they'll inherit the earth. That's that's

  703. a pretty good blessing. Getting the

  704. whole earth.

  705. Blessed are they that do hunger and

  706. thirst after righteousness, for they'll

  707. be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for

  708. they'll obtain mercy. Blessed are the

  709. pure in heart, for they'll see God.

  710. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they'll

  711. be called the sons of God. Blessed are

  712. they who are persecuted for

  713. righteousness sake, for theirs is the

  714. kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when

  715. men shall revile you and persecute you

  716. and say all manner of evil against you

  717. falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be

  718. exceedingly glad, for great is your

  719. reward in heaven, for so persecuted they

  720. the prophets who are before you. Those

  721. aren't different kinds of people in

  722. different shelves. They're all

  723. descriptions of the same group.

  724. He's looking at his disciple.

  725. Then he says in verse 13, you're the

  726. salt of the earth.

  727. Well, who is the salt of the earth?

  728. What's it mean to be the salt of the

  729. earth? Uh,

  730. well, salt is NAC

  731. if I remember chemistry, which I don't

  732. remember much of it because I'm pretty

  733. bad student.

  734. It has two ingredients

  735. physical salt.

  736. But this has many, right? I think it's

  737. eight.

  738. So he's talking to the group as a group.

  739. It's people who have this blessing in

  740. these different ways

  741. that are the salt of the earth. They are

  742. the preservers of this planet.

  743. Crazy

  744. liberals say, "Oh, we got to preserve

  745. the earth by uh reducing our carbon

  746. footprint and all that

  747. about this

  748. worried about ozone.

  749. I'm not saying we shouldn't take care of

  750. the planet. I'm just saying that's not

  751. the biggest thing. You're avoid you're

  752. avoiding the biggest thing. You've

  753. already rejected the biggest thing.

  754. The salt of the earth is the church. The

  755. salt of the earth is Christians

  756. individual

  757. and collective.

  758. And he says in verse 14, you're the

  759. light of the world.

  760. What are the shades of light in a

  761. rainbow?

  762. Well, it's the same blessedness that he

  763. mentions the different shades. It he's

  764. talking again about the same people.

  765. Same people that are salt of the earth

  766. are the light of the world.

  767. It's blessed people and only blessed

  768. people that are the light of the world

  769. and the salt of the earth.

  770. We don't have that in ourselves.

  771. That's God's gift.

  772. God's mercy. Remember Jesus told Thomas,

  773. "You've seen and you believe. Blessed

  774. are those who haven't seen him."

  775. You think it'd be great to be back there

  776. and see Jesus and be in the room with

  777. him after. Yeah, that'd be great. We got

  778. even something greater. We got a

  779. blessing by believing without seeing.

  780. Just take God at his word.

  781. Romans chapter 4. Will you go there just

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  782. for a moment?

  783. The Apostle Paul picks out of all the

  784. Jews of Jewish history, the first Jew

  785. and the greatest Jew, Abraham and David.

  786. You've heard me say it'd be like some

  787. American picking out George Washington

  788. and Abraham Lincoln.

  789. So, he's just picking out these two big

  790. Old Testament people and saying if they

  791. got saved by faith and not by works,

  792. then that's the way everybody's got to

  793. get saved.

  794. And so, what shall we say then? That

  795. Abraham our father is pertaining to the

  796. flesh is found. For if Abraham were

  797. justified by works, he has something in

  798. which to glory, but not before God. For

  799. what says the scripture, Abraham

  800. believed God, and it was counted to him

  801. for righteousness. Now to him that works

  802. is the reward not reckoned of grace but

  803. of debt. But to him that works not but

  804. believes on him that justifies the

  805. ungodly, his faith is counted for

  806. righteousness. Couldn't be clearer. And

  807. then he goes to David. Even as David

  808. also describes the blessedness of the

  809. man unto whom God imputes righteousness

  810. apart from works. and he's quoting the

  811. Psalms saying, "Blessed are those who

  812. iniquities are forgiven and those whose

  813. sins are covered. Blessed is the man to

  814. whom the Lord will not impute sin." If

  815. you're saved, you put your trust in

  816. Christ, you've come under God's

  817. blessing.

  818. A lot of people don't know that. They

  819. have no comfort. They have no life.

  820. Now, one of my I have a two volume

  821. Hebrew dictionary deals with every

  822. Hebrew word in the in the uh Old

  823. Testament. And on blessing, it says to

  824. bless in the Old Testament means to end

  825. with power or success, prosperity,

  826. pecundity, longevity. It's frequent

  827. frequently contrasted with to esteem

  828. lightly or curse.

  829. And that's right.

  830. Now, if we go to Ephesians 1, we find

  831. every Christian is blessed.

  832. God's blessed us with all spiritual

  833. blessings in heavenly places in Christ.

  834. And as we come back to uh go to

  835. Galatians, I want you to go to Galatians

  836. and then I'll close out.

  837. Galatians 3

    Galatians 3:10

  838. verse 10. For as many as are under the

  839. works of the law or under the curse, for

  840. it's written, cursed is everyone that

  841. continues not on all things that are

  842. written in the book of the law to do

  843. them. But that no man is justified by

  844. the law in the sight of God is evident.

  845. For the just shall live by faith, and

  846. the laws not of faith. The man that does

  847. them shall live in them. Christ has

  848. redeemed us from what? Christ has

  849. redeemed us from what? The curse of the

  850. law,

  851. being made a curse for us.

  852. For it's written, cursed is everyone

  853. that hangs on a tree.

  854. Jesus took your hell that you could have

  855. his heaven.

  856. That's what it's talking.

  857. He took God's curse

  858. that you could have God's blessing.

  859. Is that a little thing?

  860. And why did he do it? Verse 14, that the

  861. blessing of Abraham might come on

  862. Gentiles through Jesus Christ that we

  863. might receive the promise of the spirit

  864. through God. Bible says that in Abraham

  865. all nations of the earth will be

  866. blessed.

  867. If God be before us, who can be against

  868. us?

  869. Now,

  870. I'm going to apply this just a little

  871. bit and we'll close.

  872. You realize

  873. there was a recent very very very recent

  874. archaeological discovery.

  875. Archaeologist

  876. found this

  877. and I'm just going to read it to you

  878. because it's fascinating to me.

  879. New light was thrown on the authenticity

  880. and antiquity of the ironic blessing.

  881. That's what we're studying. Number six,

  882. when two small corroded silver scroll,

  883. two small corroded silver scrolls that

  884. had been used as amulets were recovered

  885. from the excavation affinum

  886. west of the old city of Jerusalem in

  887. 1979.

  888. The fragile nature of the artifacts made

  889. unrolling them difficult and precarious

  890. task. And when it was accomplished

  891. finally in 1982,

  892. the tiny scrolls appeared to be blank.

  893. Under magnification,

  894. faint writing appeared on the larger of

  895. the two scrolls.

  896. But it was only in 1986

  897. when they were being prepared for

  898. exhibition that the contents of these

  899. omulants began became apparent.

  900. The discovery of the three-fold

  901. repetition of the divine name, the first

  902. name, the name Yahweh has been found on

  903. ancripture in Jerusalem led to their

  904. decipherment of the ironic priestly

  905. benediction.

  906. on the omelets

  907. amulets. An omelette, something you eat

  908. on the amulet.

  909. It was almost identical form to the

  910. maseretic text of numbers 6:24-26.

    Numbers 6:24–26

  911. The maseretic text is the Hebrew text

  912. that our Bibles come from.

  913. And the script which had been etched on

  914. the silver was typical of that in use of

  915. the 7th century BC.

  916. Can I say that again? 7th century BC.

  917. You realize that's hundreds of years

  918. older than the Dead Sea Scrolls.

  919. This particular discovery

  920. of this one little verse

  921. on the silver amullet is the oldest

  922. verse of scripture have anywhere.

  923. This is not a little thing.

  924. And uh and he said this makes the

  925. scrolls from Katef Henam the oldest

  926. biblical manuscript yet discovered

  927. predating the earliest Dead Sea scrolls

  928. by almost four centuries. And the fact

  929. that the material was inulate form

  930. testifies to the lengthy tradition of

  931. usage as a personal blessing. The

  932. scrolls also witness coinc

  933. coincidentally to the fact that the

  934. ironic blessing was written as well as

  935. oral form long before the supposed P

  936. document was compiled.

  937. Say what's the P document?

  938. unbelieving German

  939. uh Old Testament scholars cut the Old

  940. Testament up into uh different sections.

  941. Jed DP.

  942. He said Moses didn't write it.

  943. There was this document that uses the

  944. word Jehovah. This one used Elohim.

  945. There was the Deuteronomy document.

  946. There was a priestly document. They were

  947. all different times and somebody put it

  948. all together uh a lot later.

  949. The only problem problem with that is

  950. this predates that

  951. kind of blew that out of the water. Much

  952. like that other archaeological discovery

  953. of finding God Jesus Christ on a church

  954. floor that predates the council of Nika.

  955. Crazy people saying that Nika they

  956. invented the deity of Christ.

  957. Well, how come the church was has God

  958. Jesus Christ on their ceramic floor long

  959. before the council of Na?

  960. Deity Christ is not an invention by a

  961. bunch of preachers in Na.

  962. What [clears throat] was it? 3 325 AD.

  963. The church believed that from the

  964. beginning.

  965. I love this this thing with this uh it

  966. just blows away. I I was taught that

  967. Raphael's an apothesis at OU when I took

  968. Old Testament at OU. Didn't believe it.

  969. Then I went to seminary. My Hebrew

  970. prophet refuted it in one period.

  971. Took one class for him to refute that.

  972. But it's good to know that this has done

  973. the same.

  974. Some applications.

  975. God's blessing is a total act of grace.

  976. Number one, and not dependent on our

  977. zeal or dedication.

  978. Not all nations,

  979. not all in the nation. We're Nazerites,

  980. but all got the blessing individually.

  981. Two, our dedication should be motivated

  982. by the bounty of God's blessing. We're

  983. not trying to squeeze blessing out of

  984. God. We're responding to the blessing he

  985. wants us to have.

  986. and you're either blessed or cursed

  987. according to Jesus.

  988. Matthew 25

    Matthew 25:31

  989. verse 31 and follow.

  990. Finally,

  991. P. Campbell Morgan, the British pastor

  992. 100 years ago writing on this said

  993. that these benedictions

  994. they were included in the divinely

  995. appointed appointed liturgy of worship

  996. and in common with the whole of the

  997. picture system

  998. where riches and fuller revelation would

  999. be given to men.

1000. The priestly priest office priestly

1001. office is mediatoral. Its function is

  1002. twofold. Intercessory and benedictory.

1003. Each of these functions has a double

1004. operation. The priest in intercession

1005. stands first in the presence of God

1006. pleading the cause of men.

1007. And then in the presence of men pleading

1008. the cause of God. The priest in

1009. benediction stands first in the presence

1010. of men pronouncing blessings from God

1011. and then in the presence of God offering

  1012. the praises of men.

1013. Our present m mediation is concerned

1014. with the first aspect of the benedictory

1015. functions. The pronouncement of the

1016. divine blessing on men by the lips of

1017. the mediating priest. Now you probably

  1018. didn't follow all that.

1019. They offered the sacrifice first

1020. and then the priest gave the blessing.

  1021. Without the sacrifice,

  1022. it'd be no blessing.

1023. It says the Solom was a distinct part of

1024. worship of the Hebrew people and its

1025. place in the order of worship is

1026. indicated quite clearly in the 22nd

1027. verse of the 9th chapter of Leviticus

1028. where we read these words. And Aaron

1029. lifted up his hands toward the people

1030. and blessed them. And he came down from

1031. offering the sin offering and the burnt

1032. offering and the peace offering.

1033. So they offered the offerings and then

  1034. he pronounced the blessing.

1035. It's only because our Lord died. He's

1036. our burnt offering. He's our sin

1037. offering. He's our peace offering

1038. that God can bless God.

1039. He Jesus was cursed because cursed is

1040. everyone that hangs on a tree

  1041. that we

  1042. might be blessed.

1043. That's the God we worship. That's the

  1044. God we praise.

1045. Uh today we're going to do something at

1046. the end instead of our trying to sing

1047. number six. Actually, there are churches

1048. who sing that. The Baptist church I was

1049. raised in, we always sang that every

1050. Sunday. Uh, as a benediction, and the

1051. choir would come in with the difficult

  1052. parts. It's a little involved, but we've

1053. got a choir on YouTube singing the

  1054. ironic blessing

1055. in English. And I want you to hear that

1056. today as we close out our service. And

  1057. it's beautifully done.

1058. And I think that you will be blessed

  1059. by

1060. going to follow along. That's page 571.

  1061. >> Yeah, it's 571 in our handbook.

  1062. YouTube will work.

1063. We said we can use this time to count

  1064. our

  1065. >> [clears throat]

  1066. >> Yeah, I did right.

  1067. Let's

1068. close our service. Father, we thank you

1069. for the blessings that have come our way

  1070. through Jesus Christ.

1071. We look back over this year,

1072. those of us that know

1073. the blessing of the Lord in our lives,

  1074. so thankful for it.

1075. Even the hard things have been good

  1076. and have good purposes.

1077. We look forward to this next year, not

1078. knowing what it will bring, but knowing

1079. that we're not on our own. As David

1080. wrote, "The Lord is my shepherd. I shall

  1081. come."

1082. In his name we pray.

  1083. Lord, [singing]

1084. as we go from this place, [music]

  1085. loving you [singing] more,

  1086. trusting you more.

1087. May the power of your [singing] love and

1088. the light of your word shine to a sin,

  1089. darkened [singing and music]

1090. world. As we go from this place,

  1091. [singing]
