  1. And so he got to go then.

  2. But in this particular section, this is

  3. a goodbye sermon.

  4. It's Moses telling the nation goodbye.

  5. I'm not going to be here anymore.

  6. To lead you. Joshua will be. I won't be.

  7. You're going over the river. I'm going

  8. to be here.

  9. And so that's where we are in the book

  10. of Deuteronomy.

  11. And we're going to pick it up in verse

  12. 15 now because this is our section.

  13. The Lord thy God will raise up to thee a

  14. prophet

  15. from the midst of thee

  16. of thy brethren like unto me.

  17. You won't have me anymore,

  18. but you're going to have prophet like

  19. unto me

  20. of thy brethren,

  21. like unto me. Unto him you shall

  22. hearken. The word hearken means hear,

  23. but it also means obey. The same Hebrew

  24. word that's translated here is

  25. translated obey because if you're really

  26. hearing

  27. obey

  28. according to all that you desire of the

  29. Lord thy God in Horeb in the day of the

  30. assembly saying let me not hear again

  31. the voice of the Lord my God neither let

  32. me see this great fire anymore that I

  33. die not. That's he's going clear back to

  34. the Ten Commandments when they were

  35. given. He's going clear back to when the

  36. fire was coming off the mountain and he

  37. and the voice of God was sounding. Two

  38. million people heard God speak.

  39. They said, "We can't take it. It's too

  40. intense.

  41. We can't do it anymore. You go, you go

  42. up. Let God talk to you and then you

  43. come back and talk to us. We need a

  44. mediator.

  45. [clears throat]

  46. And so it says in verse 16, "According

  47. to all that you desire of the Lord your

  48. God in Horeb, the day of the assembly,

  49. saying, let me not hear again the voice

  50. of the Lord my God, neither let me see

  51. this great fire anymore that I die not."

  52. That's Exodus chapter 20 and so 19 and

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  53. 20. The Lord said to me, "They have well

  54. spoken that which they've spoken. I'll

  55. raise them up a prophet from among their

  56. brethren like unto thee and will put my

  57. words in his mouth.

  58. And he shall speak to them all that I

  59. command them. This is a prophecy for the

  60. future.

  61. There's going to be another Moses.

  62. not going to be Moses reincarnated,

  63. but it's going to be a Mosesike person

  64. who's going to be over the whole nation.

  65. And it will come to pass that whoever

  66. will not hearken to my words, which he

  67. shall speak in my name, I will require

  68. it of him.

  69. There's more in the next verses, but I'm

  70. going to stop there for now. Thank you,

  71. Father, for this section of scripture.

  72. Help us to hear this section. It's so

  73. important.

  74. And may the Lord accomplish his purposes

  75. in each of our lives today.

  76. Amen.

  77. This is not only just our New Year's

  78. message, it's the fifth message in a

  79. series

  80. uh that we have been preaching. taking

  81. key verses from different passages of

  82. the Bible, different books of the Bible,

  83. taking ch a verse out of each book. Now,

  84. we're not necessarily

  85. looking at that verse as the key to that

  86. book. Sometimes it will be, but it we're

  87. looking at it as a verse that will help

  88. us understand the rest of the Bible.

  89. That's that's the point. We're picking

  90. out verses. This is the best verse I we

  91. can find out of a lot of good verses

  92. that will help us understand other

  93. things in the Bible.

  94. So we will read through the 34 chapters

  95. of Deuteronomy.

  96. This is the last message of Moses to the

  97. Jewish nation before they cross the

  98. Jordan in river into the promised land.

  99. They're in Moab. They're on the east

  100. side of the Jordan. They're going to go

  101. across the uh river into the promised

  102. land.

  103. Now, when we read about that, it reminds

  104. us of another crossing that happened 40

  105. years before this,

  106. the crossing of the Red Sea.

  107. Remember that miracle?

  108. In the crossing of the Red Sea, two

  109. million Jews went through the Red Sea

  110. and the Egyptians trying to do it

  111. drowned.

  112. waters parted and then they close.

  113. Now, what's going on here is they're

  114. going to cross, they've already crossed

  115. the Red Sea. They're going to cross

  116. the Jordan River,

  117. which is a bigger miracle, crossing a

  118. Red Sea or crossing the Jordan River.

  119. Well, obviously most rivers are smaller

  120. than a sea.

  121. And so crossing the Red Sea was

  122. extremely significant because when they

  123. crossed the Red Sea, they had escaped

  124. 400 years of slavery.

  125. Uh and the Egyptians can't bother them

  126. anymore. They got they tried to do it

  127. and they drowned.

  128. So the door was shut getting him back to

  129. Egypt when the water came back. Now now,

  130. so they've been in the desert 40 years.

  131. Now they're crossing the Jordan River.

  132. And that is significant because when

  133. they get to the other side of that

  134. river, they're in the promised land.

  135. Taking 40 years to get them there.

  136. But

  137. you know, if you travel with children,

  138. it takes longer to go anywhere, right?

  139. Got to stop here, you got to do that,

  140. you got to stop there, you got to do

  141. that. Well, it took them longer. They

  142. they could have got there in a month,

  143. but it took 40 years. It was discipline

  144. because of their waverness.

  145. But now is the time.

  146. And Joshua is going to be the person,

  147. God's already mentioned that, to take

  148. him over, not Moses. Joshua was Moses

  149. assistant.

  150. He was the assistant pastor and Moses

  151. was the pastor of the whole nation. You

  152. can put it that

  153. both crossings were supernaturally

  154. accomplished.

  155. The water parted at the Red Sea

  156. and it also parted

  157. at the Jordan River.

  158. This is very interesting to me.

  159. There's a parallel going on.

  160. Moses's credibility grew a lot as soon

  161. as that water parted and then came back.

  162. Pretty obvious that Moses was God's man.

  163. And now the Jordan River is a smaller

  164. miracle but of the same kind.

  165. The waters are going to part. They're

  166. going to go across. And when they go

  167. across, they're going to be fighting on

  168. the other side. They the they're going

  169. there's a war on. It's going to be an

  170. invasion of the promised land and God's

  171. going to be with them and Joshua is

  172. going to lead them.

  173. So that's the picture

  174. in Joshua 3:7. The Lord said to Joshua,

    Joshua 3:7

  175. "Today I will begin to exalt you in the

  176. eyes of all Israel so they may know that

  177. I'm with you as I was with Moses."

  178. That's the point of this miracle.

  179. The lesser miracle of going across the

  180. the Jordan River is to say, "Look, you

  181. nobody can part the Red Sea or the

  182. Jordan River. I only God can do that."

  183. So, just as I did miracles through

  184. Moses, I'm going to do miracles through

  185. Joshua because Moses was my man, but

  186. he's dying. Joshua is taken over. He is

  187. authenticated.

  188. It was a big deal in the United States

  189. when George Washington crossed the

  190. Delaware in the winter.

  191. Have you ever read about that?

  192. It's one of the most stunning

  193. providential events in American history.

  194. Uh

  195. George Washington's men were starving

  196. and British thought they had Americans

  197. beat.

  198. And George Washington attacked him on

  199. Christmas, but he had to go across the

  200. river. Now, God didn't park the Delaware

  201. River.

  202. They had to go across boats,

  203. get their weapons across Canada. An

  204. incredible though providential event.

  205. The British were totally surprised and

  206. it was the difference between winning

  207. the revolution and losing it. A dramatic

  208. moment in American history.

  209. Uh and but this is this is something on

  210. a different level even though as

  211. important as that one was.

  212. Everybody heard about this.

  213. If you go back to Rahab the harlot,

  214. everybody knows.

  215. She grew up hearing about

  216. all the cities of Canaan heard about the

  217. crossing of the Red Sea.

  218. It is a miracle that happened 40 years

  219. before.

  220. Everybody knew about it in Palestine.

  221. That's what we call. That's what some

  222. people call

  223. But everybody knew about it. You can see

  224. that in the book of Joshua very clearly.

  225. So these are amazing things that are

  226. about going to happen. And basically God

  227. saying

  228. just as I was with Moses, I'm going to

  229. be with you. So it was a transfer of

  230. authority that God documented.

  231. Now, what we have here is Moses's swan

  232. song.

  233. Now, that's a strange expression. Swan

  234. song. Have you ever heard that person's

  235. last message, last sermon,

  236. last goodbye is their swan song? Because

  237. there was a Greek mythology that swans

  238. who never are usually silent sing before

  239. they die.

  240. It was a Greek, it's a Greek mythology.

  241. So that's where the term

  242. swan song

  243. comes from. This is Moses's swan song

  244. sermon.

  245. This is it.

  246. His last words.

  247. I remember when I was at Columbia City

  248. Bible Church. We started a church when I

  249. was in seminary. I remember my last

  250. sermon there.

  251. I remember my last sermon at Do Bible

  252. Church where I was assistant pastor and

  253. I was leaving that church to come here.

  254. I was crying, they were crying,

  255. could hardly get through it for the

  256. tears. I knew this is it. I 300 people

  257. there, you know, I'm not going to see

  258. these people much anymore. And I've

  259. never been back.

  260. Providence has kept us apart.

  261. A lot of those people are in glory.

  262. We not We never know when we're

  263. preaching our last message, right?

  264. No, we don't know that. Did Dave Dupler

  265. know it was going to be his last

  266. message?

  267. We didn't know it. He didn't know it.

  268. How about Mike Bro? Did he Did he know

  269. it was going to be his last message? He

  270. didn't know it. Did Dave Coffin think it

  271. was going to be his last time at church?

  272. his last time at church, you know. Well,

  273. he kind of had knew something was

  274. coming, but not yet.

  275. But, you know, we don't know. Moses knew

  276. this is it.

  277. No question. This is it.

  278. And so, his whole heart is in this,

  279. this farewell message,

  280. his final public address to the nation.

  281. And it therefore this this section this

  282. whole book of Deuteronomy is that

  283. 34 chapters a swan song of the first

  284. mediatorial

  285. leader or ruler of the Old Testament

  286. theocratic kingdom.

  287. That's what Moses was. He was the first

  288. mediatorial leader of the Old Testament

  289. theocracy.

  290. The church is not a theocracy,

  291. although some have tried to make it one.

  292. But the Old Testament had a theocracy

  293. and it had a ruler that ruled for God

  294. and was a go-between between God and

  295. men. That was the mediator. And Moses,

  296. Moses was the first mediator

  297. of uh first leader of the he he ruled

  298. for God under God.

  299. And he wrote the first five books of the

  300. Bible.

  301. He wrote did the Genesis. He was Moses

  302. was the editor and compiler of the Ala

  303. do uh sections of the book of Genesis

  304. translated in English. These are the

  305. generations of

  306. that book was was all the material was

  307. all there. Moses put it together as

  308. editor. But Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers,

  309. and Deuteronomy were all his work.

  310. He wrote all of it.

  311. But this is the last part.

  312. This is the sermon part.

  313. The last sermon.

  314. Deuteronomy is just a bunch of sermons,

  315. prophetic sermons. that you know it's

  316. very much like Exodus in some ways that

  317. we view some of that material. You got

  318. an account of the ten commandments in

  319. Exodus 19 and 20. You got a account of

  320. the ten commandments in Deuteronomy 5,

  321. but it's a little different

  322. not only in the case laws that are added

  323. but it's it's more sermonic

  324. and this is the last of the last.

  325. Do you know the last words of George

  326. Whitfield?

  327. I've read his biography.

  328. You know the last words of John Owen,

  329. the great British theologian.

  330. Treasures.

  331. And this is a treasure. And if you read

  332. it like the last words of Moses, and

  333. feel the heartbeat of it, God working

  334. through him on that occasion.

  335. I believe God brought him to this place

  336. so he could preach this sermon with all

  337. his heart and soul. So it all that all

  338. that um all the feelings of Moses come

  339. into this. It's God's word given to him

  340. through him. But it's here now Matt Post

  341. if he reviewed the book of Deuteronomy.

  342. It's on his website and that's we got

  343. some copies of that. He has a section on

  344. key verses

  345. and Linda checked that out and when when

  346. he I saw I looked at this real briefly

  347. and I said, "Oh, there's about seven key

  348. verses here he gives or something like

  349. that. I wonder if the one I picked is in

  350. there."

  351. Well, let's see.

  352. Deuteronomy 6:4 and 5. I almost picked

    Deuteronomy 6:4

  353. this one for this one.

  354. She is Adonaiu Adonaihan. Here, O

  355. Israel, the Lord our God is one.

  356. That's a big verse.

  357. And you'll love the Lord your God with

  358. all your heart, with all your soul, and

  359. all your strength.

  360. That's called the Jewish Shema. She is

  361. here. Deuteronomy 7:78. The Lord did not

  362. set his love on you nor choose you

  363. because you were more in number than

  364. other people. for you were the least of

  365. all peoples. But because the Lord loves

  366. you and because he would keep the oath

  367. he swore to your fathers, the Lord has

  368. brought you out with a mighty hand,

  369. redeemed you from the house of bondage,

  370. from the hand of Pharaoh the king. Great

  371. verse on election. Great verse on

  372. salvation,

  373. God. And same for you and me. He didn't

  374. choose us because we were so great.

  375. He didn't look down and say, "I think

  376. I'm going to save Bill Hixon because

  377. Bill Hixon's a good guy.

  378. I'm going to reveal Jesus to him because

  379. Bill Hixon deserves that.

  380. No,

  381. he he's very clear. I didn't choose you

  382. as a nation because you're better than

  383. other people.

  384. It's just because I loved you.

  385. It's a tremendous verse and a lot of

  386. preaching in that. Deuteronomy 8:3. He

    Deuteronomy 8:3

  387. humbled you and allowed you to hunger

  388. and fed you with mana which you did not

  389. know nor your fathers know that he might

  390. make you know that man shall not live by

  391. bread alone but by every word word that

  392. proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.

  393. Oh, that's Deuteronomy 8:3. That's Jesus

    Deuteronomy 8:3

  394. used that when the devil was trying to

  395. tempt him.

  396. Man shall not live by bread alone.

  397. So that so far as I look down through

  398. Matt's picks of the great key verses,

  399. that's pretty good. Then he picked

  400. another one. Deuteronomy 10:16.

    Deuteronomy 10:16

  401. Therefore, circumcise the foreskin of

  402. your heart and be stiff neck no longer.

  403. What's that mean?

  404. That physical circumcision isn't the

  405. main circumcision. There is a work of

  406. God in the heart that needs to be done,

  407. not just on the body. And he shows

  408. another one that's similar in 30:6. But

  409. then 10:16 or excuse me 18:15 he picked

  410. our verse.

  411. See I knew Matt Poster was a good Bible

  412. teacher.

  413. 18:15 the Lord your God will raise up

  414. for you a prophet like me from your

  415. midst from your brethren. Him shall you

  416. hear?

  417. And then he picked Deuteronomy 28 which

  418. is also very important.

  419. So totally agree with Pat faster math

  420. selection.

  421. I would like to add another one just

  422. while we're doing this. Slip back to

  423. chapter 17 of Deuteronomy in verse 14.

  424. I would add this one. It's the only one

  425. I would really add as we think through

  426. the more important key verses. Matthew

    Matthew 17:14

  427. 17:14.

  428. When you're come unto the land which the

  429. Lord your God gives thee and possess it,

  430. and shall dwell therein, thou shalt say,

  431. I will set a king over me like all the

  432. nations that are about me.

  433. Thou shalt, here's the qual. Here's what

  434. they're supposed to do. This is the kind

  435. of king they're supposed to have. This

  436. is the king's responsibility.

  437. Thou shalt surely set him king over thee

  438. whom the Lord your God shall choose. God

  439. chooses. This is You don't elect him.

  440. He's chosen a God. One from among your

  441. brothers shall you set king over thee.

  442. You may not set a foreigner over thee

  443. who's not your brother.

  444. that he shall not multiply horses to

  445. himself, nor cause the people to return

  446. to Egypt, to the end that he should

  447. multiply horses. For as much as the Lord

  448. has said to you, you'll henceforth

  449. return no more that way. No big military

  450. buildup

  451. and trust in your military. Got more

  452. horses and chariots than other people.

  453. Neither shall he multiply wives to

  454. himself. Solomon should have read that

  455. one, shouldn't he?

  456. He did the very thing God said don't do

  457. that his heart turned not away. Neither

  458. shall he greatly multiply to himself

  459. silver and gold. Is it wrong to be rich?

  460. No. But it's wrong to trust in riches.

  461. And you can't trust them if you don't

  462. have them.

  463. And so if the king is so occupied with

  464. multiplying silver and gold and horses

  465. and wives, he's not going to be having

  466. his mind and his time where it needs to

  467. be. Well, where's it supposed to be?

  468. Every other king multiplies war machines

  469. and gold and wives. Everybody else was

  470. doing that. God says, "That's not for

  471. you. This is different.

  472. You got something more important.

  473. Watch what the more important one.

  474. Then it shall be when he sits on the

  475. throne of his kingdom, he shall write

  476. him a copy of this law in a book out of

  477. which is before the priest the Levites,

  478. it shall be with him, and he shall read

  479. therein all the days of his life.

  480. Jewish kings needed to be literate.

  481. They needed to be able to read the Bible

  482. for themselves,

  483. that he may learn to fear the Lord his

  484. God, and to keep all the words of this

  485. law and these statutes, to do them, that

  486. his heart be not lifted up above his

  487. brethren, that he turn not aside from

  488. the commandment, to the right hand, or

  489. to the left, to the end, that he may

  490. prolong his days in his kingdom, he and

  491. his children in the midst of Israel.

  492. Boy, that's that's such a important

  493. verse.

  494. So, that's the one I would add to Matt's

  495. list.

  496. I think the rest of them I would also

  497. amen.

  498. Now, Moses was the first mediatorial

  499. ruler of the Old Testament theocracy.

  500. Joseph, Joseph was the second. Who came

  501. after Joseph? Joseph Jr.? No.

  502. No.

  503. judges.

  504. Remember that there was no king in

  505. Israel. Everybody did what was right in

  506. their own eyes, but the Lord raised up

  507. judges. And the judges were from

  508. different tribes.

  509. And the book of Judges is about that.

  510. But the book of Judges and the book of

  511. Ruth actually go together. Many Bible

  512. scholars believe Ruth should be tacked

  513. on to the end of Judges. It was

  514. originally part of it. born again in

  515. that argument.

  516. But if it is, whether it is or not, it's

  517. very interesting. At the beginning,

  518. there's no king in Israel. Everybody's

  519. doing right in their own eyes. And what

  520. does the book of Ruth do? It has a

  521. marriage of Rahab to Boaz that produces

  522. the king, King David.

  523. So, we're back to David and his family

  524. and all of that that's going on.

  525. So, all these things are fascinating as

  526. you move through this particular

  527. section. Moses is the first, Joshua is

  528. the second, then come the judges, then

  529. come the kings, and the kings ultimately

  530. go into David's line right up to Jesus

  531. Christ in the New Testament.

  532. And it's very clear in our section back

  533. in Deuteronomy uh 17 uh excuse me uh in

  534. our particular section

  535. in Deuteronomy 18.

  536. God's going to raise up a prophet. This

  537. leader will be a prophet. Not just a

  538. king.

  539. He'll be a prophet king. David was that.

  540. Not all the kings had to keep the

  541. prophecy.

  542. He'll be a prophet, priest, king. In the

  543. Old Testament, you you you had to be

  544. born a priest and you had to be born a

  545. king. You had to have the right

  546. genealogy. Nobody never mixed. They

  547. separated church and state that way.

  548. Jesus is a priest of the order of

  549. Melkisedc.

  550. He is the priest king. He's the greater

  551. than Moses.

  552. Now,

  553. as we move through this section in verse

  554. 14, it says,

  555. "For the nations whom you shall

  556. Deuteronomy 18:14 shall possess, hearken

    Deuteronomy 18:14

  557. unto observers of times and divers, but

  558. for you, the Lord thy God has not

  559. permitted you to do so." That's not You

  560. don't follow their religion. You don't

  561. adopt that because you don't even

  562. intermar with them. So, they're wise to

  563. turn your hearts to other gods. you do

  564. your own thing and focus on me and I'm

  565. going to raise up a prophet like unto

  566. Moses and that'll be what's interesting

  567. is initially this is Joshua.

  568. He's the first leader like unto Moses

  569. and he is authenticated by the parting

  570. of the Jordan River. By the way, I've

  571. been to the Jordan River. It's reminds

  572. me of the river right there by Whites

  573. Mill.

  574. It's not much bigger than that.

  575. Now, a lot of And you could just walk

  576. across, right?

  577. I mean, I think I if I wanted to, I

  578. don't could walk across that river

  579. probably now. Don't don't want to do it

  580. in the winter. Might do it in the

  581. summer. I don't even want to do it in

  582. the summer.

  583. But you ever seen that river at flood

  584. stage?

  585. Wouldn't want to be in there then?

  586. Not much of a river.

  587. I wouldn't want to be trying to walk

  588. across it at flood state.

  589. And that is when God parted the water in

  590. Jordan flood state.

  591. Very interest. The two spies got across.

  592. I don't know how they got across, but

  593. they got across and back. But who wants

  594. to take women and children and supplies?

  595. How you going to get all that stuff? So

  596. that job wasn't doing miracles just to

  597. show off. It was something needed. And

  598. once they crossed that river,

  599. everybody in the promised land that was

  600. an enemy of God knew we are in big

  601. trouble. It's the the same God that

  602. brought them out of Egypt with miracles

  603. has now brought them into our country.

  604. We're on our back foot now.

  605. So fascinating.

  606. Now, one more thing I want to say before

  607. I get into this a little more.

  608. Deuteronomy starts out with God telling

  609. the Jews, "You don't get the land of

  610. Edom." That's Esau's

  611. You don't get Moab. That's That's Don't

  612. Don't get Moab. You don't get the

  613. Ammonite. I gave them that land.

  614. You don't attack them.

  615. You don't bother them. I gave them that.

  616. I'm giving you this. And this is where

  617. you go.

  618. Now, don't tell me the Jews have no

  619. right to the land of Israel.

  620. I know they're unbelievers, most of

  621. them. But God, what do you think the

  622. were? They were unbelievers,

  623. but God wouldn't let Israel touch their

  624. land. The Moabites were unbelievers.

  625. They all those people were idolattors,

  626. but they came from people God made

  627. promises to.

  628. And so God is sovereign in his

  629. distribution of land.

  630. And that distribution comes from

  631. physical descent, not spiritual descent.

  632. The right to the land is physical

  633. descent from Abraham

  634. and Isaac and Jacob.

  635. The enjoyment of land is spiritual.

  636. You mess up, you worship other gods,

  637. you're going to I'm going to take you

  638. off. You're evicted.

  639. It's still your land, but you're gone.

  640. I hope all of us who are

  641. premillennialist understand this. There

  642. was a condition in these covenants.

  643. And I'm not sure all our uh uh reformed

  644. brethren understand that. Turn to Acts

  645. 17. Acts 17.

  646. Yes, God will take him off the land to

  647. show his displeasure. He's done that

  648. several times.

  649. But that land is still theirs.

  650. And in the future, when they repent,

  651. they'll get it back. Acts 17:24.

    Acts 17:24

  652. This is the Apostle Paul's sermon in

  653. Athens, Greece

  654. [clears throat]

  655. on Mars Hill.

  656. Acts 17

  657. 24.

  658. God who made the world and all things in

  659. it, seeing that he's Lord of heaven and

  660. earth, dwells not in temples made with

  661. hands, neither is worship with men's

  662. hands as though he needed anything,

  663. seeing he gives to all life and breath

  664. and all things. Now watch first, watch

  665. this verse. and made of one blood all

  666. nations of men to dwell on all the face

  667. of the earth. And at deterren the times

  668. before appointed and the underlying

  669. the bounds

  670. of their habitation.

  671. God determined that I would be born in

  672. Ohio.

  673. The Hixons came to America

  674. in the 1700s,

  675. the early 17.

  676. I wasn't involved in that decision.

  677. Nobody asked me.

  678. My ancestors made a choice. They live

  679. right on the border of Wales and

  680. England, about two hours south of

  681. Liverpool.

  682. decided don't know how why they decided

  683. but they did they came to Virginia

  684. they came to Ohio

  685. got the genealogies and the dates

  686. God decided that he brought about all

  687. the situations where my ancestors would

  688. make decisions that would affect not

  689. only them but their children

  690. grandchildren great-grandchildren great

  691. great grandchildren And that's the same

  692. for you.

  693. And it will be the same for our children

  694. and our grandchildren.

  695. God determines

  696. the times before appointed and the

  697. bounds of their habitation.

  698. So I think I'm the fifth or sixth

  699. generation southeast Ohio. No, southern

  700. Ohio. They lived in the west part of

  701. Ohio near Cincinnati and Wilmington. But

  702. you know, I lived in Cincinnati. I guess

  703. we're moving east now

  704. that God determined the times before

  705. appointed in the bounds of their

  706. habitation that they should seek the

  707. Lord if perhaps they might have to find

  708. him and through though he's not far from

  709. every one of him. So what a that's an

  710. important significant verse.

  711. It's biblical teaching and that's true

  712. of the Jewish people.

  713. Get over it.

  714. Those that say God's done for Israel,

  715. he's not done with them. God keeps his

  716. promises. Even if men mess up.

  717. Now, in Deuteronomy,

  718. I counted these verses. I did. I gave

  719. up. I got my Hebrew concordance out. I

  720. started counting. Approximately 180

  721. times the word land appears in

  722. Deuteronomy. A little more than that.

  723. Somewhere between 180 and 190.

  724. The Hebrew word erys

  725. or land.

  726. Deuteronomy is big about the land and

  727. they're crossing over to get into the

  728. land.

  729. And our section's a key verse at a key

  730. time. at a key time of transition and a

  731. string of leaders are going to follow.

  732. So this is not just these people but God

  733. says there's going to be a person like

  734. unto Moses and he's going to have that

  735. mediatoral leader authority and there's

  736. going to be a repeat repetition of

  737. fulfillment down through history a

  738. series of leaders

  739. from Joshua and the judges and the

  740. Jewish kings

  741. until you come to the one great

  742. fulfillment of this prophecy.

  743. Initial fulfillments

  744. gradually leader after leader

  745. but then the ultimate fulfillment

  746. the Moseslike person

  747. Jesus Christ.

  748. Turn with me to John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  749. 1.

  750. John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  751. Watch this with me if you would.

  752. The Jewish people knew this prophecy.

  753. They didn't understand exactly how it

  754. would be fulfilled, but they knew it.

  755. They knew it well.

  756. They knew this prophecy the way we know

  757. John 3:16.

    John 3:16

  758. It was deep.

  759. And so in John 1 verse 21, and I'm I'm

    John 1:21

  760. saying that most Americans know John

    John 3:16

  761. 3:16 even if they're not saved. You've

  762. been John 3:16 to death.

    John 3:16

  763. They don't even contemplate. They just

  764. take it for granted.

  765. And that's what I mean about all the

  766. Jews knowing this. John chapter 1 verse

    John 1:21

  767. 21, John the Baptist is getting

  768. interrogated by the leaders and they ask

  769. him, "What then? Are you Elijah?"

  770. He said, "I'm not. Are you that prophet?

  771. Are you that prophet?" John 21 John

    John 1:21

  772. 1:21. And he answered, "No."

  773. What do they mean by that prophet?

  774. They're quoting Deuteronomy.

  775. They knew it.

  776. Go over to Acts chapter 3.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  777. Acts chapter 3

  778. verse 32.

  779. Now they asked John, "Are you that

  780. prophet?" And he said, "No.

  781. Who are you? I'm the voice. He cries in

  782. the wilderness. I'm not the one in

  783. Deuteronomy. I'm the one in Isaiah.

  784. That's who I am.

  785. So he answered him. They didn't like

  786. that answer. But in a Jack Acts chapter

    Acts 3:22

  787. 3 verse 22.

  788. This is Peter's sermon

  789. after the healing of the crippled man.

  790. Acts 3:22. For Moses truly said to the

    Acts 3:22

  791. fathers, "A prophet shall the Lord your

  792. God raise up unto you of your brethren

  793. like unto me. Him shall you hear in all

  794. things whatever he shall say to you. And

  795. it'll come to pass that every soul who

  796. will not hear that prophet shall be

  797. destroyed from among the people."

  798. Now, who does he think that is?

  799. Peter knows who it is. It's Jesus.

  800. Yeah. And all the prophets from Samuel

  801. and those who followed as many as spoken

  802. likewise told these things. You're the

  803. sons of the prophets and of the covenant

  804. which God made with our fathers, saying

  805. to Abraham, "And in your seed all

  806. kindred of the earth will be blessed

  807. unto you first. God having raised up his

  808. son Jesus sent him to bless you in

  809. turning away every one of you from his

  810. iniquities."

  811. The apostles understood this prophecy.

  812. Jesus taught it to them.

  813. and they got it. Turn over to chapter 7

  814. of Acts and verse

  815. 37.

  816. This is this is Stephen preaching the

  817. deacon

  818. speaking

  819. of Moses. He said in verse 37,

  820. he's going through Jewish history. He's

  821. given them everything they agree on

  822. before he gets to where they disagree.

  823. That's a good way to witness. Did you

  824. know that? Try to find common ground

  825. with people.

  826. You're walking with a Roman Catholic.

  827. Remind them of the things Catholics and

  828. us agree on. The creeds and the deity of

  829. Christ and the Trinity and inspiration

  830. of the Bible.

  831. Now, there's some details we don't agree

  832. on on that. We know that, but at least

  833. they know you're you got some kind of

  834. agreement. And that's exactly what

  835. Stephen did. And that's what he was

  836. doing. And in verse 37, this is that

  837. Moses he'd been talking about Moses who

  838. said to the children of Israel, "A

  839. prophet shall the Lord your God raise up

  840. to you of your brethren like me. Him

  841. shall you hear?"

  842. This is he that was with the church in

  843. the wilderness, with the angel who spoke

  844. to him in Mount Si, and with our fathers

  845. who received the living oracles given to

  846. us, whom our fathers would not obey, but

  847. thrust him from them, and in their

  848. hearts turn away to Egypt. But Stephen

  849. knew this. He knew what Moses said, and

  850. he's hinting at it before he gets to the

  851. conclusion. When he finally gets to the

  852. conclusion, they start throwing rocks.

  853. Sermon's over.

  854. But he he got his message across anyhow.

  855. So Moses

  856. is talking about something after him

  857. and it comes into the New Testament over

  858. and over again. When Jesus fed the

  859. 5,000, somebody said, "It's is this that

  860. prophet

  861. supposed to come into the world?" John

    John 6:40

  862. 6:40.

  863. The New Testament is full of references

  864. to our particular section.

  865. To such a prophet,

  866. one writer said, "To such a prophet,

  867. Israel must listen."

  868. And so, not to their divers or anybody

  869. else, to him. He's so Moses is

  870. legitimizing Joshua. He's legitimizing

  871. the judges. He's legit legitimizing the

  872. Old Testament kings. He's certainly

  873. legitimizing the Messiah.

  874. Now, when we think about this,

  875. this is this is about Jesus.

  876. Remember Jesus said, "Moses wrote of

  877. me."

  878. And he was right.

  879. Because Jesus is the ultimate

  880. one to follow Moses.

  881. The Bible is all one story. And if we

  882. know those beginning stories, it helps

  883. us understand the later. Jesus is the

  884. ultimate mediatorial

  885. ruler of the mediatorial kingdom.

  886. And there's one mediator between God and

  887. man, Christ Jesus.

  888. Now, Moses was superior to all the

  889. others except Jesus. Deuteronomy 34:10.

    Deuteronomy 34:10

  890. There was nobody like him

  891. until Jesus.

  892. And God said, "I'll put my words in his

  893. mouth." And God did do that. He did it

  894. for Joshua. He did it as he did for

  895. Moses. And so forth and so on.

  896. One Scottish preacher said, he was

  897. writing in 1856, "Be satisfied with the

  898. Bible. You have not exhausted it. It has

  899. stories and treasures of thought and

  900. hopes and joys that you have yet not

  901. touched."

  902. Now, let's apply it. We'll be done.

  903. Application number one. You and I are

  904. now in the era of fulfillment.

  905. Jesus is the ultimate prophet,

  906. priest and king. Moses wrote of him.

  907. Whole Bible's about him. Moses

  908. prefigured him. And just as people were

  909. to hear Moses, the New Testament says

  910. hear him. That's to hear Jesus. We

  911. submit to him. We obey him. He is our

  912. king. He's our ruler.

  913. He's king of kings and lord of lords.

  914. And what does it mean to submit to him?

  915. It means to submit to his word in the

  916. Bible. To submit about what is written

  917. about him, to submit about what he says,

  918. to immerse ourselves in holy scripture

  919. as he did. Joshua was the Moses

  920. successor and God told him to meditate

  921. day and night in the word. Oh, you're

  922. going to fight. You're going to be a

  923. fighter, Joshua. But you got a big job.

  924. You got to be soaked in the scriptures.

  925. Joshua chapter one.

  926. We are to hear him.

  927. There is a

  928. 1950s song. I remember it when I was a

  929. kid in junior high. It was a rock song

  930. before their

  931. crazy rock stuff. I only have eyes for

  932. you.

  933. Some of you remember that one.

  934. How about this one about Jesus? I only

  935. have ears

  936. for you.

  937. I'm not going to listen to anybody else.

  938. What I care is about what you say.

  939. Don't make a Bible out of any other book

  940. or any other person.

  941. Only have I ears for you. Turn to John

    John 5 chapter mention

  942. chapter 5 and verse 46.

  943. We are in the era of fulfillment.

  944. John 5:46,

    John 5:46

  945. Jesus said this.

  946. There was a there's a disparity between

  947. what they said they believed and what

  948. they did believe.

  949. And I'm going to go back to verse 44.

  950. Jesus said, "How can you believe who

  951. receive honor one from another and seek

  952. not the honor that comes from God only?

  953. Do not think I'll accuse you to father

  954. to the father. There is one that accuses

  955. you, even Moses whom you trust."

  956. For had you believed Moses, if you

  957. really trusted him, if you really

  958. believed him, you would have believed

  959. me.

  960. For he wrote of me.

  961. But if you believe not his writings, how

  962. shall you believe my words.

  963. How important it is to be soaked in the

  964. Old Testament. Only when we're saturated

  965. with Old Testament teaching can we

  966. really open up the New Testament and see

  967. the progression and see the hand of God

  968. in the glove of history.

  969. Then we will believe in the verbal

  970. inspiration of the Bible.

  971. Then we'll be like the king that

  972. meditates in it day or night. This book

  973. I can't I this is my main job in life is

  974. to learn this book. We got other stuff

  975. to do. Sometimes the kings had to fight.

  976. Sometimes they had the rules. Sometimes

  977. they had decisions to make. But I'm

  978. going to have my mind saturated in holy

  979. scripture and feed on that book.

  980. It's a scary thing

  981. to superficially and intellectually know

  982. things but not really know them.

  983. In John chapter 6, there were people

    John 6 chapter mention

  984. that thought they knew the Bible and

  985. they when Jesus fed him, they thought,

  986. "Oh, this is the prophet that comes into

  987. the world." They knew it in a

  988. intellectual loose way. Moses gave us

  989. mana and he just fed 5,000 of us. Hey,

  990. this got to be the Moses guy.

  991. But when Jesus opened his mouth and

  992. began to say, "I'm the bread that comes

  993. out of the heaven," they turned away and

  994. said, "This is the worst sermon we ever

  995. heard. Who do you think he is?"

  996. They should have pondered our text

  997. a lot longer

  998. than they did.

  999. They had a superficial, incomplete

1000. knowledge of the very Messiah they

1001. claimed to believe. They thought they

1002. knew, but they didn't know.

  1003. They were woefully incomplete.

  1004. Do not be satisfied

  1005. with

1006. kindergarten knowledge of the Bible.

  1007. I remember when I was a teenager, I

1008. thought I knew the Bible.

1009. I thought, you know why? Because I knew

1010. more Bible than other people did. I went

1011. to church every Sunday, went Sunday

  1012. school since I was a kid. I had a

1013. kindergarten knowledge of the Bible. I

1014. thought I had, you know, I thought I was

1015. way more farther along. I knew the Bible

  1016. stories. I knew John 3:16.

    John 3:16

1017. I knew about the rapture of the church.

  1018. I knew that stuff. I thought, I've got

1019. it covered. My friends don't know any of

1020. this. I even know more than some of my

1021. uh my Roman Catholic friends. Well, that

  1022. wasn't much. So, I thought I was a Bible

1023. scholar. I'd never read the Bible

1024. through. Never. All the way through high

  1025. school. Never professing Christian.

  1026. Never.

1027. I had family members that did, but

1028. somehow it didn't catch on with me.

1029. I was a senior in college at OU before I

1030. first started studying the Bible.

1031. Seriously, I bought a paperback Bible at

1032. uh the bookstore here in Athens and took

1033. it home and underlined everything and

1034. went from Genesis to Revelation. My

1035. first time through the Bible.

1036. And then I started again. And then then

1037. I was going I was sitting under good

1038. Bible teaching and that began it I

1039. remember pastor Oswall said something to

1040. us long ago. He said if you just come to

1041. my class you'll grow this much. He said

1042. if you just read the Bible and don't

1043. come to my class you'll grow this much.

1044. But if you do both you'll grow like

  1045. that.

  1046. Never forgot that.

1047. So what you read in private and what you

1048. hear in public is supposed to reinforce

1049. itself. Oh, now I know what that means.

  1050. I didn't understand it.

  1051. You're connecting dots. You're

1052. connecting things. And when we see the

1053. our prophecy being quoted later and when

1054. we connect all that, the Bible becomes a

  1055. book that's a lie.

1056. We see the hand of God in the glove of

1057. history. We know there's a sweep to it

  1058. that we

1059. begin to understand. It's a scary thing

  1060. to be superficially intellectually

1061. un think we know the Bible when we

  1062. don't.

1063. Just because we know more than others

1064. people do, it doesn't mean we know

  1065. enough.

1066. And we in our best we know in part and

1067. we prophesy in part. We all we're ever

1068. going to get is a part understanding,

1069. but that part ought to get bigger as we

  1070. move forward.

1071. Um, now our Lord Jesus never spoke of

1072. other gods. He was pointing people to

  1073. the true God

1074. and the Jewish prophecies came to pass

  1075. in him.

1076. He didn't speak presumptuously. He spoke

  1077. authoritative

1078. and he spoke of the things in prophets

1079. in the psalms uh and concerning himself.

  1080. So that's all good.

  1081. Um,

1082. you remember the phrase when we take the

1083. Lord's supper with the cup, drink ye all

  1084. of it.

1085. Here's a phrase for Bible study. Eat you

  1086. all. [snorts]

  1087. Don't be like a picky kid. I'm not

  1088. eating my peas.

  1089. I don't like green beans.

1090. Eat you all of it.

1091. Get all 66 books. Have a balanced diet.

1092. Eat you all of them.

1093. I've read other religious books as a

1094. professional necessity. Some of them are

1095. absolutely so boring you just can hardly

  1096. get through it.

1097. And the more you read it, the less valid

  1098. it becomes.

  1099. say, "Wow, I can't believe anybody

  1100. believes this."

1101. But when it comes to holy scripture,

  1102. it's a whole different thing. And you're

1103. on a whole different level when you

1104. prayerfully open the scriptures and ask

  1105. God to teach you

1106. the written words about the living word.

1107. It's very important for us to grasp all

1108. of it as we can.

  1109. Um,

1110. do you remember when Jesus was teaching

  1111. somebody exclaimed

1112. when they asked the guards that were

1113. going to arrest him, they came back

1114. without arresting him, "Why didn't you

  1115. arrest him?

1116. Why weren't you against him like we are?

  1117. No man ever spoke

  1118. like this man.

  1119. That's what they said.

1120. his authority and his gravity and his uh

1121. love and his mercy. It all came out

  1122. in such a way

1123. they said that we're not arresting this

  1124. guy.

  1125. We're not

  1126. touching him.

1127. And the Lord speaks to us in such a way

1128. when we read this book, you just keep at

1129. it. In the beginning, it's hard. He'll

1130. say, "No book's written like this book.

1131. There's no book like it."

1132. And it's our same Lord Jesus that

1133. predicted on the third day he'd rise

  1134. again.

1135. Did not that come to pass?

1136. He said it would. It did.

1137. His words did not fall to the ground.

1138. The resurrection is the ultimate sign,

  1139. his ultimate authority.

1140. There's two kinds of error.

1141. Going after false gods and failing to go

  1142. after the truth.

1143. Didn't Jesus say close with this? My

  1144. sheep

  1145. hear my voice

  1146. and they follow.

1147. Moses said of that prophet like unto

  1148. him, "Hear you,

1149. my sheep. Hear my voice."

1150. You've heard the voice of the Lord this

1151. morning in this scripture. be spoken to

  1152. your heart.

  1153. That's what we're here for. And I

1154. challenge you to read the book of

1155. Deuteronomy. [clears throat] It's not an

1156. easy book to read. It's an essential

1157. book to read. And um

1158. dudero means second. It's the second

1159. giving of the law only. It's a sermonic

1160. review of what God already said in the

1161. book of Exodus and adding some things

1162. about the occasion that they're on at

  1163. that time.

1164. Father, we thank you for what we've

1165. looked at uh as we've studied this

  1166. section.

  1167. Prophet like unto Moses.

1168. The very first section of the Bible, the

1169. penitent ends with this great thought.

  1170. prophet like unto Moses

  1171. is coming

1172. and 1500 years later he came.

1173. Father, we thank you for that.

1174. We thank you that the Bible says no man

1175. ever spoke like that man, not even

  1176. Moses.

1177. It's impossible to believe in Moses and

1178. not believe in Jesus. If we believe him,

1179. we will believe in him.

1180. And maybe some people here are still not

1181. Christians or hear my voice. Well, have

1182. you read the Old Testament?

1183. Have you heard what God said through

  1184. Moses?

1185. Have you heard what God has said to the

1186. Old Testament? You say, "Well, it's

  1187. hard. It's big. It's a lot of work."

  1188. Yes, it is. But

  1189. there's a connection,

1190. God's hand in the glove of history that

  1191. we miss.

1192. We don't do that. Help us all to fall in

1193. love with the Old Testament

1194. because we love our Lord. We love to see

1195. him in all the scriptures.

1196. In his name we pray. Amen.
