  1. with me this morning.

  2. The fifth the sixth book, excuse me, the

  3. sixth book in our Old Testament,

  4. Joshua

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  5. chapter 5.

  6. Our target passage is verses 13 to 15.

  7. That's where we're going to camp out

  8. in Joshua 5:13-15.

    Joshua 5:13–15

  9. We're going to get a run at it and get

  10. some thought about the whole book and

  11. then we will

  12. uh focus on that section.

  13. Moses has died. He's buried in Moab.

  14. the uh nation of Israel, two million

  15. Jews have crossed over the Jordan under

  16. Joshua's leadership. There's been a

  17. transition in leadership

  18. and that transition God promised as I

  19. was with Moses so I'll be with you. Uh

  20. and Joshua now who'd been Moses

  21. assistant for 40 years now Moses is

  22. gone. Joshua doesn't have Moses to look

  23. to. Moses is Moses is gone.

  24. He is passed away and is buried before

  25. they cross the river. So now Joshua is

  26. facing the stress

  27. of not being second in he in command

  28. top.

  29. He's the top man under God.

  30. So all the weight of leadership has

  31. suddenly come upon his shoulders

  32. and that's a big big job.

  33. And Joshua has was a man of war uh under

  34. Moses's leadership. Joshua went to war a

  35. lot uh and the and and fought enemies of

  36. the Lord on the other side of the

  37. Jordan. But now Moses is not there.

  38. you know, the leaders that God gives us,

  39. uh, sometimes they frustrate us,

  40. sometimes they upset us, but then when

  41. they're gone, we kind of miss them and

  42. think, "Oh, now I'm now I'm in charge.

  43. And now I'm sitting in a different seat

  44. now, and I need wisdom from God. I need

  45. help from God. There's nobody above me.

  46. I'm it." And that might be in a family.

  47. It may be in at work. It may be in a

  48. neighborhood where you've got some

  49. responsibility that others don't have.

  50. Now it's all on you. And as President

  51. Truman said, the buck stops here. Well,

  52. we we find that out. And so, it's good

  53. to know that above the leaders is the

  54. leader.

  55. Yes, husbands are the head of the home,

  56. but Christ is the head of the husband.

  57. And so, uh, it's very important for us

  58. to know that leaders are led

  59. by the Lord,

  60. and Joshua is finding that out in this

  61. particular section.

  62. Now, they've taken care of some matters

  63. that need to be dealt with, and we're

  64. going to mention those a little bit.

  65. They've crossed the river.

  66. uh they've engaged in uh uh in chapter 5

  67. with some things that had to happen. And

  68. once they cross that river,

  69. they're in enemy territory.

  70. They're crossing that river to attack.

  71. And the river has come back. It's come

  72. back to full flood stage behind them.

  73. And so it's kind of like George

  74. Washington crossing the Delaware. They

  75. didn't have the Delaware partying, but

  76. once they're on the other side with

  77. their boats and their cannon and their

  78. men, it's mid winter, everybody's cold

  79. and tired. It's an all night march and

  80. they're going to attack. There was no

  81. retreat. If they didn't win the battle,

  82. the war is over.

  83. And no doubt Joshua was feeling the

  84. weight of all this.

  85. And so Joshua uh leaves the people

  86. behind for and goes for a walk

  87. by himself.

  88. And maybe he's reconording recon

  89. ordering uh Jericho, but he's certainly

  90. probably thinking now what?

  91. How do I attack this place?

  92. Jericho was an outpaced military city,

  93. 1500 people in it, walls that were

  94. massive and high.

  95. uh and um

  96. uh they could not bypass it.

  97. If they tried to go south, then the the

  98. garrison of Jeremiah Joshua, excuse me,

  99. garrison of Jericho could attack them in

  100. the rear. They tried to go north, the

  101. garrison and Jericho could attack him in

  102. the rear. If they tried to go forward

  103. and bypass it, they could attack him in

  104. the rear. They couldn't do any of those

  105. things. Jericho had to go.

  106. And so Jer the strategy was to split the

  107. nation and split it in half. Uh kind of

  108. like in the civil war when Sherman went

  109. across the south. The the uh the it was

  110. to go into the promised land, take out

  111. Jericho and and then they they had then

  112. they decided to go north and south. I

  113. think they went south first if my memor

  114. is correct. and and then they went north

  115. and it was very successful strategy. But

  116. Jer Joshua doesn't know any of this

  117. stuff. He's starting to figure out

  118. what's next.

  119. No doubt he's praying.

  120. No doubt he's thinking.

  121. And so in Joshua 5:13,

    Joshua 5:13

  122. it came to pass when Joshua was by

  123. Jericho

  124. that he lifted up his eyes and looked,

  125. and behold, there stood a man over

  126. against him. That was a surprise.

  127. Total surprise. He had no armor bears.

  128. He had no guard. He's by himself.

  129. There stood a man over against him with

  130. a sword drawn.

  131. Now, drawing the sword is like drawing a

  132. gun.

  133. Somebody draws a gun, it's more

  134. threatening than if that gun's in the

  135. holster, right?

  136. Somebody draws that gun,

  137. you know that there's a reason they've

  138. drawn it and it's much more threatening.

  139. So,

  140. uh, I've had guns drawn on me twice in

  141. life, my life, and it makes you think

  142. about a little bit.

  143. And so Jeremiah meets this person and he

  144. the person has a sword drawn in his hand

  145. and Joshua went to him. Now, this tells

  146. you something. The guy's

  147. he'd been through many battles. It

  148. wasn't like this is a new thing.

  149. He went up to him

  150. and said, "Are you for us or for our

  151. adversaries?"

  152. That's the lookout's answer for friend

  153. or foe.

  154. Are you for us or you for adversaries?

  155. As far as Joshua knew in the beginning,

  156. it's going to be oneon-one since God

  157. gives the adversaries we're going to

  158. have to take this guy out.

  159. Who's ready for that?

  160. And he said, "Nay,

  161. I am not for your adversaries and I'm

  162. not for you."

  163. But as captain of the armies, King James

  164. says host, it means armies. of the Lord

  165. am I now come.

  166. And Joshua fell on his face

  167. to the earth and did worship

  168. and said to him, "What says my Lord

  169. unto his servant?"

  170. And the captain of the Lord's host said

  171. to Joshua, "Loose thy shoe from off thy

  172. foot, for the place where on you stand

  173. is holy."

  174. And Joshua did so.

  175. Now, there are some Bible teachers

  176. believe that this that's all there was

  177. that this was it. And there's others

  178. believe that chap part of chapter six

  179. comes in there. I happen to think there

  180. was more than just verse 15 that went

  181. between them.

  182. Uh but I'm not going to read into

  183. chapter six right now. Father, help me

  184. to speak and help us to hear your word

  185. in Jesus name. Amen.

  186. The significance of this is that they

  187. have a commission from God to attack and

  188. take over this land.

  189. This isn't a land grab.

  190. It It's their land because God gave it

  191. to them.

  192. He gave it to them.

  193. And their responsibility was to take it.

  194. And there's different outlines of the

  195. book of Joshua. And I'm going to get the

  196. big picture and then we'll come down to

  197. our little section.

  198. One of my Hebrew professors, Old

  199. Testament professors, John Davis,

  200. outlined this this way. the book of

  201. Joshua uh entering the land chapters 1:5

  202. conquering the land chapter 6 to 12

  203. dividing the land chapters 13- 24

  204. you notice as as Dr. Davis outlined in

  205. it. It's all about the land.

  206. Entering the land 1:5, conquering the

  207. land 6 to2,

  208. dividing the land 13, chapters 13- 24.

  209. Another Bible scholar, Martin Woodstra,

  210. he outlines it this way. The promised

  211. land conquered 1 to 12. The promised

  212. land distributed 13-22.

  213. the promised land kept by covenant

  214. obedience chapters 23 and 24 and a

  215. little bit different but you notice both

  216. those men translate

  217. do have the land in their outline

  218. Dale Ralph Davis the Presbyterian

  219. scholar outlines it this way chapters 1

  220. to4 entering the land chapters 5 to 12

  221. taking the land chapters 13 to 21

  222. possessing the land and chapters 22 and

  223. 24 holding the land or retaining the

  224. land. Every one of those outlines deals

  225. with the land

  226. and the Baptist David Howard deals with

  227. this particular section. Joshua, the

  228. book of Joshua is written to provide an

  229. interpretive history as one slice of

  230. Israel's life as a people. more

  231. specifically interprets the period in

  232. which Israel entered and settled in the

  233. land promised to Abraham and his

  234. descendants.

  235. And then he said, "Concern with the land

  236. is part of the warp and woof of every

  237. chapter

  238. in this book."

  239. Now, there's things we ought to be

  240. concerned with that God has commissioned

  241. us to do as a church. go into all the

  242. world and preach the gospel to every

  243. preacher. We should be obsessed with

  244. that. Getting the gospel out where it is

  245. not known in our own town, in our own

  246. family or in uh other places even

  247. that that's a very important matter in

  248. their in their time. Their thing was to

  249. get the land

  250. promised it to you. These other nations

  251. I've given them their land. This is the

  252. land I've give to you. But now they have

  253. to go through a transition of leadership

  254. right when you would least want it to

  255. happen.

  256. Moses, they trusted him 40 years. He got

  257. him through that. God used Moses to get

  258. him through everything. Now Moses is

  259. gone.

  260. And even though Joshua was his

  261. assistant, he was his assistant.

  262. And so now Joshua is the mediator of the

  263. Old Testament kingdom in place of Moses.

  264. He's the new guy on the job. I've been

  265. an assistant pastor and I've been a

  266. pastor. As an assistant pastor, you do

  267. what? Assist the pastor. You don't do

  268. what you want to do. You do what he

  269. wants you to do. You're under him.

  270. And so Mo Joshua had been Moses's

  271. assistant for 40 years, but Moses is

  272. gone. And now Joshua is in this place.

  273. You know, it's hard on churches when you

  274. have a change in leadership.

  275. Often a break break or make thing.

  276. I don't know how long I'm going to be

  277. here, but I know sooner or later if the

  278. Lord carries somebody will be standing

  279. here instead of me.

  280. And that won't be easy.

  281. But uh churches uh take that pretty

  282. hard. There's a joke among pastors, it's

  283. a joke, you may have heard it, but if a

  284. pastor has been in a church for a long

  285. time

  286. and then the new guy is the first new

  287. guy to come along after a long pastor,

  288. 20, 30 years or in my case 49,

  289. then the new pastor has a hard time

  290. being accepted.

  291. People say things like, "We never did it

  292. this way before."

  293. Famous words of every church,

  294. the new pastor, it it and sometimes it

  295. gets very difficult, right? Uh

  296. and so pastors often call privately a a

  297. younger guy that's put in that position

  298. as the sacrificial lamb.

  299. In other words, he's not going to last

  300. long. They're not used to him. So, he's

  301. not going to last long. the other pastor

  302. lasts a long time. So, the new one's not

  303. going to last long. He'll give up. And

  304. uh people won't accept his leadership.

  305. And they have to go through a transition

  306. where they do.

  307. And transitions uh can be hard.

  308. Remember, David came after Saul and that

  309. caused a civil war.

  310. But sometimes it's not a violent or open

  311. thing. Sometimes it's what you call

  312. passive aggressive,

  313. passive aggressive

  314. towards the new guy.

  315. And uh uh let me read what I read

  316. something uh that I read somewhere. A

  317. church got a new pastor

  318. who the music minister immediately

  319. disliked.

  320. Now, we don't have a music minister

  321. here, but bigger churches do, right? His

  322. whole job is music.

  323. So, the church got a new pastor who the

  324. music minister immediately disliked.

  325. Eventually, their conflict spilled out

  326. into the Sunday service.

  327. The first week, the pastor preached

  328. about commitment and how we should

  329. dedicate our lives to serving one

  330. another. The music minister led the

  331. song, I shall not be moved.

  332. The second week, the pastor preached

  333. about tithing and how important it was

  334. for the congregation to contribute to

  335. the church. The music minister led the

  336. song Jesus paid it all.

  337. There's some subtlety going there. The

  338. third week, the pastor preached about

  339. gossiping and how we should all watch

  340. what we say about one another. The music

  341. minister led the song I love to tell the

  342. story.

  343. At this point, the pastor caught on.

  344. Embarrassed over how the music

  345. minister's feud with him was disrupting

  346. their service. He told the congregation

  347. the next week that he was thinking about

  348. resigning. The music minister led the

  349. song, "Oh, why not tonight?"

  350. And sure enough, the pastor did resign.

  351. In his farewell sermon the next week, he

  352. told the congregation that as Jesus had

  353. called him to the church, Jesus was now

  354. calling him away from the church. The

  355. music minister led the song, "What a

  356. friend we have in Jesus."

  357. Now, that's funny, isn't it? But

  358. sometimes there's that kind of

  359. undercurrent kind of thing going on. And

  360. Joshua was God's replacement.

  361. And it's very clear in chapter one, God

  362. told him, "As I was with Moses, so I'll

  363. be with you. I want you to meditate in

  364. my word day and night.

  365. God was very clear about his

  366. responsibilities.

  367. And Joshua on top of just being the next

  368. guy, it was a different situation. This

  369. wasn't getting out of Egypt. This wasn't

  370. wandering in the wilderness. This was

  371. taking over the land with hostile people

  372. on the other side. Moses had a little

  373. bit of that on the east side of the

  374. Jordan, but this was going to be rough.

  375. So,

  376. um,

  377. they needed continuity as well as

  378. transition, didn't they? And by God's

  379. grace, they got it.

  380. By God's grace, they got it.

  381. The church ministry is like a relay

  382. race. Passing the baton is a critical

  383. moment.

  384. And

  385. there's problems when the ton theaton is

  386. passed from one to another. And there's

  387. problems with a person passing it.

  388. There's problems with the person getting

  389. a hold of it. And the book of Joshua is

  390. written mainly to show how that all

  391. happened.

  392. And it happened well.

  393. And Moses is mentioned 10 times in

  394. chapter one.

  395. God knew the transition. The people knew

  396. the transition.

  397. and the transition has taken place, but

  398. the battles haven't been fought yet.

  399. That brings us to our chapter.

  400. How to be successful

  401. in spiritual warfare,

  402. especially when you're the new person

  403. engaged in it.

  404. Now, Joshua wasn't new in the sense he

  405. was fighting a lot. Moses was holding up

  406. his hands and praying. Joshua's down

  407. there fighting, but this time it wasn't

  408. Moses that was leading. It was Joshua.

  409. So, the scriptural prerequisites for

  410. spiritual warfare

  411. under transition.

  412. When the Lord calls me home or when I

  413. have to retire, there'll be a

  414. transition. But guess what? The Lord's

  415. not transitioning out.

  416. He will still be here.

  417. Same thing for every other position. in

  418. the church.

  419. Okay, what's the picture? Number one,

  420. as we come back to chapter five, we come

  421. into

  422. they're on the other side of the river.

  423. God has used Joshua to get them across

  424. the ri flooded river the way he used

  425. Moses to get them across the Red Sea.

  426. And there's a parallel in those. And God

  427. was saying, "See,

  428. I use Moses to get you across the Red

  429. Sea. Now I'm using Joshua to get you

  430. across the U Jordan River. Same God. A

  431. little smaller miracle, but still a

  432. miracle."

  433. Now, as we come to this particular

  434. section of scripture

  435. in this particular chapter,

  436. the first thing we see in spiritual

  437. warfare, if a nation is going to have a

  438. new leader and they're going to go into

  439. battle, not just the leader has to be

  440. right, but the nation has to be right or

  441. the local church has.

  442. Success doesn't depend. I know everybody

  443. says things rise or fall in leadership.

  444. In one sense that's true, but it doesn't

  445. always it's just not all leadership.

  446. Followership is important too.

  447. So what did they do? Number one,

  448. the first thing was to amend their lives

  449. to holy scripture, especially in areas

  450. that have been neglected.

  451. Areas have been neglected.

  452. um

  453. circumcision.

  454. Everybody that came out of Egypt was

  455. circumcised. Moses was circumcised.

  456. And

  457. God got upset when his son wasn't. So,

  458. he took care of that.

  459. And everybody that came out of Egypt was

  460. circumcised. Nobody

  461. in the 40 years of wandering the in the

  462. wilderness were circumcised.

  463. That was a God-given religious right.

  464. Not something that would save you, but

  465. something that was responsible. It was a

  466. biblical requirement in the Old

  467. Testament, and it had been neglected for

  468. 40 years.

  469. I hope whatever our church has neglected

  470. in the years I've been here, when I'm

  471. gone, God will fix that.

  472. Maybe fix it before I'm gone.

  473. Now on a circumcision is a ceremonial

  474. right. On the surface it seems quite

  475. unimportant. It can't save you but it's

  476. it was a biblical requirement in the Old

  477. Testament. Had been neglected for 40

  478. years. In Genesis 17 11-14

  479. we see Moses got in trouble by

  480. neglecting in his own family.

  481. And it was a requirement if you were

  482. going to keep the Passover feast to be

  483. circumcised.

  484. that weren't circumcised, you couldn't

  485. you couldn't uh keep the Passover feast.

  486. Exodus 12:42-14

  487. and verse 48.

  488. And both of these in some ways picture

  489. the death of Jesus, the putting away of

  490. sins through the work of the

  491. circumcision of Christ and uh at at the

  492. cross and the uh the it was a

  493. prerequisite

  494. and you know they took those

  495. circumcision

  496. flint knives and buried him with Joshua

  497. in Joshua 24:3.

    Joshua 24:3

  498. So before the battle starts,

  499. you got to be biblically

  500. conformed

  501. what God expects.

  502. once said the task task ahead of battle

  503. were too too important to enter into

  504. lightly or unprepared in any way.

  505. Now today if we want to win a battle

  506. we have to amend our lives to holy

  507. scripture especially in things we've

  508. neglected as individuals or as a church.

  509. That's why we got to be in God's word so

  510. we know oh wait we haven't been doing

  511. this. This is biblical. This is right.

  512. We've been neglecting this. Athens Bible

  513. Church has been ignoring this. Haven't

  514. been up on this.

  515. And so as we come to Joshua chapter 5

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  516. verse two and following is dealing with

  517. the circumcision

  518. verse 2 to

  519. uh 9. And then in verse 210 to 12 they

  520. celebrate the Passover. That's another

  521. thing they hadn't done since they left

  522. Egypt. The first Passover was in Egypt.

  523. And they didn't do it for 40 years in

  524. the wilderness.

  525. And so it was time for them now they

  526. were settled to amend their lives to

  527. Revelation.

  528. And Joshua 5 10. The children of Israel

  529. entered encamped in Gilgal and kept the

  530. Passover on the 14th day of the month at

  531. evening in the plains of Jericho. And

  532. they and so that was a very important

  533. thing. Worship should precede

  534. warfare.

  535. They were worshiping the Lord who

  536. brought them out of Egypt.

  537. Worship. Warfare without worship is

  538. presumption.

  539. biggest thing pastors need to do is not

  540. make workers but make and warriors but

  541. make worshippers.

  542. Young Christians need to be worshippers

  543. first, workers and warriors second and

  544. third.

  545. So the first Passover has been

  546. uh celebrated.

  547. Third,

  548. they've had their circumcision. It's

  549. back. Passover's back.

  550. Then something happened.

  551. The mana stopped falling

  552. in the sky.

  553. No more mana.

  554. Mana was the diet for 40 years. When

  555. they were on when they were in traveling

  556. and moving, you couldn't plant stuff.

  557. They couldn't stay anywhere long enough

  558. to plant stuff. So God rained food down

  559. from heaven just like he earlier has

  560. brought food up from the ground.

  561. Both are miracles. We're just used to

  562. the one and we don't think about it.

  563. But when they got to the land for the

  564. first time, they ate

  565. the grain of the land

  566. first time.

  567. And the consumption of food in the land

  568. was symbolically taking possess

  569. possession of the land.

  570. And and no more uh daily mana. It's

  571. gone. Diet change.

  572. And so by faith they began to

  573. appropriate the blessings God had

  574. designed for them. And we are by faith

  575. to to proclaim pro uh we by faith are to

  576. uh enjoy the blessings God has enjoyed

  577. for us.

  578. We need to we got to watch how we're

  579. feeding.

  580. There was the time for the mana. Now

  581. there's the time for the food from the

  582. land. We amend our lives to holy

  583. scripture. Worship must preede warfare.

  584. Amending our lives to holy scripture

  585. must precede warfare and transition to

  586. the current program.

  587. The current program is no more mana.

  588. Don't live in the past. that that you

  589. see there's a balance here between

  590. keeping things the same that you need a

  591. transition of mo leadership as God was

  592. with Moses he's with Joshua but also the

  593. changing of the things that need to

  594. change.

  595. So two million people are no longer

  596. going to be fed by mana.

  597. They're going to they need to embrace

  598. the transition. And once they eat the

  599. grain, the man has stopped. And there

  600. now, think about where they're at. They

  601. got the flood of Jordan behind them.

  602. They got their enemies in Jericho ahead

  603. of them. And there's two million of

  604. them.

  605. And by faith, they circumcised the men.

  606. That made him too sore to fight for

  607. three days. If you remember Genesis,

  608. that took faith.

  609. And by faith they celebrated the

  610. Passover

  611. they worshiped the God of the Passover

  612. that brought them out of Egypt. And by

  613. faith

  614. they started eating

  615. from the land. And by eating of the land

  616. they were possessing the land before

  617. they ever fired a shot.

  618. We must know these things. And the

  619. fourth thing is we must know clearly and

  620. recognize who the real leader is.

  621. Times a transition.

  622. Who's the real leader?

  623. Well, before that they were under Moses.

  624. Who was Moses under? The Lord.

  625. Now they're under Joshua. Who is Joshua

  626. under? The Lord.

  627. So guess what? Some things have changed,

  628. but some things have stayed the same.

  629. That's important.

  630. And it was God that made the changing.

  631. So, this is especially important for

  632. leaders to know.

  633. Um,

  634. and it was important for them to know

  635. that they and their leader

  636. were under God. Abraham Lincoln in one

  637. of the times he was in the Civil War,

  638. somebody in his cabinet made a careless

  639. remark about God being on the side of

  640. the North.

  641. And I I and Lincoln's answer was

  642. beautiful. He said, "Sir, my concern is

  643. not whether God's on our side. My

  644. greatest concern is to be on God's side,

  645. for God's always right." That's a

  646. wonderful answer.

  647. And so

  648. Dale Ralph Davis said, "Sometimes we

  649. need to see the Lord as not so much

  650. partisan as sovereign."

  651. That is more important for us to

  652. recognize God's position than to know

  653. God's plan.

  654. We don't have to know God's plan. You

  655. got to know God's position.

  656. Those that have authority, like Joshua,

  657. need to be under authority. You don't if

  658. you're not under authority, you've lost

  659. your authority.

  660. And so

  661. another person said, "We can easily

  662. become more interested in spiritual

  663. guidance than the right relationship

  664. with the guide."

  665. God direct us. No, I want I want a right

  666. relationship with the guide, not just

  667. leadership.

  668. Now, what happened with Joshua is he got

  669. alone

  670. and he met with the Lord alone.

  671. That's what he needed more than anything

  672. else.

  673. He needed it more than a battle plan. He

  674. needed it more than to understand what

  675. was going to happen and how it was going

  676. to happen. He needed to be alone with

  677. So, let's reread this just for a moment

  678. and come into our text.

  679. Came to pass, verse 13, when Joshua was

  680. by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes

  681. and looked, and behold, there stood a

  682. man over against him with his sword

  683. drawn in his hand. And Joshua went unto

  684. him and said, "Are you for us or for our

  685. adversaries?" And he said, "You don't

  686. have it quite right yet."

  687. Said, "Nay, I'm not for you. I'm not for

  688. your adversary.

  689. at a higher position.

  690. Nay, but as captain of the armies of the

  691. Lord am I now come.

  692. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth

  693. and did worship and said to him, "What

  694. says my Lord to his servant?"

  695. Now, who is this captain of the Lord?

  696. Who is this person?

  697. Is he a human?

  698. Is he an angel?

  699. He wasn't a human, obviously. And he's

  700. not an angel.

  701. How do you know he's not an angel?

  702. Whenever anybody in the Bible tried to

  703. worship an angel, they were rebuked for

  704. it. Book of Revelation, right? Beginning

  705. and ending. Do it. Worship God.

  706. So he's he can't he's not an angel.

  707. Who is he? He is the pre-incarnate

  708. Lord Jesus Christ.

  709. That's who he is.

  710. All the theophanes of the Old Testament

  711. are Christophanes.

  712. Every appearance of God in the Old

  713. Testament is an appearance of the

  714. pre-incarnate Jesus Christ.

  715. This is very important. Whenever you see

  716. God appearing to somebody, whether it's

  717. Abraham or, you know, it talks about

  718. Jacob or or or anybody like that, it's a

  719. christophony, not just a theophony. Each

  720. member of the Trinity has their own job.

  721. And the father plans things, the spirit

  722. presents things, and the son purchases

  723. it at the cross of Calvary. They each

  724. have their own job. But Jesus is the

  725. word of God. John 1:1.

    John 1:1

  726. He is the revealer of God.

  727. No man has seen God at any time. The

  728. only begotten son who's in the bosom of

  729. the father, he's revealed him.

  730. If you get this understanding that every

  731. theophony

  732. in the Old Testament is a christophony,

  733. it will open up the Old Testament to you

  734. like nothing else.

  735. Now there are angels, created angels

  736. that appear and uh the word angel is

  737. Malik in the Bible. It's used of angels

  738. as messengers. Malachi is a human

  739. messenger, the prophet

  740. Malachi, my messenger. That's how that's

  741. what Malachi means. And but there's

  742. angels called Malik in the in the Bible.

  743. But there is another messenger in the

  744. Old Testament that is the ultimate

  745. messenger, the ultimate revealer of God,

  746. and that is the pre-incarnate Jesus

  747. Christ.

  748. So the father is the one that plans

  749. things. The son is the one who reveals

  750. and accomplishes things and the spirit

  751. it presents all the information to those

  752. who need it.

  753. So

  754. here we are

  755. now to prepare us for the Lord's supper

  756. which we're going to celebrate today.

  757. We want to think about what's going on

  758. here.

  759. And guess what? Guess what Jesus's name

  760. is?

  761. If you take in our Bible, we call him

  762. Jesus. Do you know what Jesus is in

  763. Hebrew? Yahosa.

  764. Yahosa.

  765. And you know what Yahosa is?

  766. Joshua.

  767. Here the Old Testament Joshua meets the

  768. New Testament Joshua.

  769. This is very interesting.

  770. And just as the Old Testament Joshua was

  771. the one that enabled everybody to

  772. inherit the land, the New Testament

  773. Joshua is the one that enables us to

  774. inherit anything that God has for us.

  775. Jesus everything belongs to him. He made

  776. everything. Everything belongs to him

  777. and we are joint hes with Christ.

  778. So this is fascinating.

  779. So Christians who are aware of Hebrew,

  780. they interpate, they translate this this

  781. way. Yahos Hamashiach,

  782. Jesus the Christ.

  783. Hamashiach is the Christ.

  784. Uh so Yahosa is Joshua.

  785. You call his name Jesus Yahosa because

  786. he will save his people from their sins.

  787. And so all this is very precious.

  788. Now let's think back of what we've

  789. looked at this morning

  790. and um

  791. to prepare us for the Lord's supper.

  792. Number one, there are God-given

  793. ceremonies that are not to be neglected.

  794. They're not to be neglected

  795. if we want to be effective in spiritual

  796. warfare.

  797. In our time, the Lord's supper is one of

  798. them.

  799. Baptism is another.

  800. Water baptism is one of a God-given

  801. ceremony. If you're a Christian, you

  802. should be water baptized.

  803. And the Lord's supper is another one.

  804. God-given ceremonies should not be

  805. neglected if we want to be effective in

  806. spiritual warfare. They neglected it.

  807. So, they did what? Wait a minute. We

  808. need to be circumcised, the men. So,

  809. let's do that.

  810. And uh Passover was another God-given

  811. celebration. Wait a minute. time to

  812. let's let's not fight till we've we're

  813. up on our obedience and amending our

  814. lives to Revelation. We're in the land.

  815. Let's celebrate the Passover. And they

  816. did it.

  817. So God-given ceremonies are not to be

  818. neglected if we want to be effective in

  819. spiritual warfare. You might think, "Oh,

  820. I need to read the Bible more." Well,

  821. that's true. Oh, I need to be a better

  822. person. That's true.

  823. But these other things, you might think

  824. they're not important. There are minor

  825. things. The mode of baptism is a minor

  826. thing in the Bible in my opinion. But

  827. being baptized is important. It doesn't

  828. save you, but you should be baptized

  829. if you haven't been. If you're a

  830. believer, believe in believers, baptism

  831. here. And so,

  832. um, I don't care about the fights,

  833. whether it's a little water or a lot of

  834. water. Some people are fighting that

  835. stuff. But the big thing is it's

  836. God-given ceremony.

  837. Second thing, the Lord's supper is a

  838. God-given ceremony.

  839. And second, if we want to be effective

  840. in spiritual warfare, the first thing we

  841. do is to get alone with the Lord apart

  842. from everybody

  843. else.

  844. So we can hear his directions

  845. and his

  846. uh directions and his guidance. He's the

  847. captain of our salvation.

  848. And that's a necessary precedent in

  849. spiritual warfare.

  850. So each of us needs to ask ourselves a

  851. serious question as we enter 2026.

  852. Have I been alone with the Lord enough?

  853. I need to fight the good fight of faith.

  854. I've got my battles.

  855. Not Jericho. It's I've got my battles,

  856. but I need to be alone with the Lord.

  857. Am I ever alone with the Lord?

  858. Is my Christianity just going to church?

  859. Am I ever alone with the Lord?

  860. reading his word, praying to him,

  861. submitting to his authority,

  862. uh enjoying his purity and his deity.

  863. Um

  864. remember that Jesus said, "I am that I

  865. am."

  866. Well, no, that's God that said that.

  867. Yes, it's the burning bush. Yeah, but

  868. Jesus was at the burning bush.

  869. It was the God in the burning bush was

  870. Jesus.

  871. That's not difficult to prove at all.

  872. Now, Joshua was missing Moses.

  873. Moses was gone, but he still had the

  874. Lord.

  875. And we miss people that God calls home,

  876. but we still have the Lord.

  877. Joshua was a veteran, but his experience

  878. wasn't enough. He needed a fresh

  879. experience with the pre-incarnate Jesus.

  880. You say, "I'm a veteran. I've witnessed.

  881. I've served. I've labored. I I've got

  882. all that under my belt so far." Yeah,

  883. but we there's more battles to fight.

  884. And we need to understand our

  885. responsibility

  886. to be alone with the Lord.

  887. Experiencing and embracing our Lord's

  888. majesty, authority, and sovereignty.

  889. He's the captain of our salvation.

  890. And only under his authority do we have

  891. it.

  892. Too many of us, especially in

  893. leadership, do not know our place.

  894. In fact, all of us should go into every

  895. business meeting, not my will, but thine

  896. be done.

  897. We're not in any business meeting of

  898. this church to to in any way uh say,

  899. "Well, I'm going to get this through

  900. this. I'm we're going to pass this. I've

  901. got to got to go. We're going to then

  902. we're going to do this in this meeting

  903. and if the vote doesn't go by way I'll

  904. meet.

  905. We're never bring our own agenda into a

  906. meeting. In any meeting,

  907. speak Lord, your servants here.

  908. In any meeting, we submit to the

  909. authority of the one who's over us.

  910. We're seeking God's will, not our will.

  911. Every meeting ought to be what? every

  912. church meeting, not my will, but thine

  913. be done.

  914. And so Joshua said, "What does my Lord

  915. say to his servant?

  916. I'm your servant.

  917. I'm Moses's replacement." But Moses was

  918. unto you and I'm unto you. And the same

  919. God that used Moses was going to use

  920. Joshua.

  921. Now, here's a big contrast.

  922. The New Testament or excuse me, the Old

  923. Testament, Joshua drew his sword. Uh,

  924. and the Old Testament,

  925. excuse me, the New Testament, Joshua,

  926. that's Jesus, drew his sword. The Old

  927. Testament, Joshua removed his shoe.

  928. That's an interesting contrast.

  929. That's just what Moses did with the

  930. burning bush. Take your shoes off your

  931. feet because this is holy ground.

  932. So Joshua is now experiencing the same

  933. thing Moses experienced. He has to learn

  934. that there's a spiritual side to

  935. spiritual warfare. He already knew that

  936. on one level because when Moses would

  937. pray, he would win the battle and when

  938. Moses' hands drooped, he would start

  939. losing. Remember that? teacher some of

  940. that. You need to know more of it.

  941. So may God help us to think about this

  942. section properly. Our Lord is the

  943. captain of our salvation.

  944. Our Lord deserves our submission. Our

  945. our Lord deserves us to give him our

  946. ears.

  947. EP Meyer said, "Our Jericho are also

  948. formidable.

  949. Our Jericho might be an empty church.

  950. Are we going to fill the Are we going to

  951. fill the church? Our our Jericho might

  952. be a hardened congregation." I'm quoting

  953. FB Meyer. Our Jericho might be a godless

  954. husband.

  955. How can we ever capture peace?

  956. take our shoes off our feet, which means

  957. we reverent in his presence,

  958. and we worship him

  959. and we say, "What sayest thou, Lord, to

  960. your servant?"

  961. There's some precious things going on

  962. here.

  963. Now I believe that

  964. chapter 6 verse one and following are

  965. connected at least the first verses are

  966. connected to our section.

  967. So

  968. Joshua wasn't just a worshipper.

  969. He was submitting

  970. to the leadership of the Lord Jesus

  971. Christ. And it says in 61, now Jericho

  972. was securely shut up because the

  973. children of Israel, none went out or

  974. came in. And the Lord said to Joshua,

  975. and I think this was the same

  976. experience, not later.

  977. The Bible teaches on both sides. I know

  978. the chapter divisions are man-made. I've

  979. given into thy hand Jericho and its king

  980. and mighty men of valor. And then he

  981. told him how to fight. This is how

  982. you're going to fight. You're going to

  983. march around the city

  984. for seven days and say nothing.

  985. Nobody say a word.

  986. March around all the way around. Say

  987. nothing.

  988. Next day march around twice. Say

  989. nothing.

  990. All the

  991. very interesting way of fighting. It

  992. must have been interesting as the people

  993. on the other side of law said. They went

  994. around once yesterday and twice now

  995. three times

  996. and you know the rest.

  997. And in that whole business as they

  998. marched around, remember the the two

  999. spies had gone to Jericho first and met

1000. the the uh ancestors of Jesus,

  1001. Rahab the harlot.

  1002. remember that.

1003. And Rahab would become the ancestors of

1004. Boaz. And Boaz and Ruth begot people who

1005. begot David. And so here's the ancestors

  1006. of Jesus.

1007. And she asked for mercy. And the two

1008. spies said, "If if you uh tie a scarlet

1009. scarlet cord and put it in your window

1010. and everybody goes in your your your

1011. house on her house was on the wall,

  1012. we'll spare you."

1013. And that scarlet cord is a perfect

1014. picture of the blood of Jesus.

1015. If you were in that in in that house,

1016. even though it was a harlot's house, it

  1017. was under the blood.

1018. Everybody died in that city but the

  1019. people in her house.

1020. Walls came down. The battle was fought.

1021. Those two men didn't kill Rahab. The

  1022. Lord didn't kill Ahab.

1023. And Joshua heard about what happened.

  1024. And Joshua is obeying

  1025. what the agreement was.

  1026. And no doubt

1027. as you go down and read about this

1028. particular section, you see what

1029. happened and Rahab and her family were

  1030. spared.

1031. Uh I love this particular section of

  1032. scripture. I think it's a good place to

1033. prepare us for the table of the Lord.

1034. Whether you're thinking about the blood

  1035. of the Passover lamb,

  1036. whether you're thinking about

1037. circumcision, blood is shed. Whether

1038. you're thinking about the scarlet cord,

1039. which represents the blood being shed,

1040. what we're doing with the with the cup

1041. is a similar kind of thing. We're

1042. rejoicing in the blood of Christ.

  1043. We're accepting we can't save oursel.

1044. We're accepting he saves us. And we we

  1045. want to celebrate this.

1046. We want to enjoy this.

1047. Ralph Davis said, "Sometimes we need to

1048. see that the Lord is not so much

1049. partisan as sovereign." We need to do

  1050. that.

1051. That it's more important to recognize

1052. God's position than to know God's plans.

1053. What's your plan, God? Well, I'll tell

  1054. you some of it.

1055. First of all, you need to know

  1056. who I am.

1057. I'll close with this. Jay Oswald

1058. Saunders in his book, Robust in the

1059. Faith, he's talking about Joshua.

1060. In this particular section, Joshua

1061. learned this. No matter what the

1062. command, he would obey it without

  1063. question.

  1064. His

1065. own strategy and tactics were forever

1066. renounced except as they coincide with

  1067. his commanders.

1068. Henceforth they would work in closest

  1069. collaboration.

1070. Have we been doing God's work our way or

  1071. God's way?

1072. It's not enough to do God's work.

1073. God's work done God's way will never

  1074. lack God's support.

1075. And Oswald Saunders said, "On this

1076. personal crisis, the whole conflict in

1077. Canaan hinged. One personal victory

1078. gained in secret can turn the fortunes

1079. of a whole nation. Joshua had come to

1080. review the battlements of the enemy. But

1081. instead, he was brought into a personal

1082. encounter with the Lord. Before he was

1083. equipped to face the foe, he must know

1084. what it is to stand before the Lord."

1085. True, he was superseded in his command,

1086. but what a burden of responsibility was

1087. lifted from his shoulders. The battle

1088. was no longer his, but the Lord's.

1089. And that's our last point.

1090. We often feel the responsibility, don't

1091. we? Ministering to our family,

  1092. our friends

1093. as if the responsibility is all on us.

1094. We do have our responsibilities,

  1095. but the battle

1096. Joshua learned was no longer his

1097. pre-incarnate. Jesus had his sword

  1098. drawn.

  1099. Joshua knew

1100. that he wasn't alone in leadership.

1101. He was going to have the power of heaven

  1102. in this regard.

1103. As we come to the table of the Lord, if

1104. you know Jesus as your savior, we invite

1105. you to take the bread, take the cup. If

1106. you don't know the Lord, we would exhort

1107. you to repent and believe the gospel,

1108. which is God so loved the world that he

1109. gave his only begotten son, his unique

1110. son, and whoever believes in him would

1111. not perish but have everlasting life.

1112. Wages of sin is death. The gift of God

1113. is eternal life through Jesus Christ our

  1114. Lord.

1115. And if we know the Lord, let's take the

1116. bread and take the cup. Let's remember

1117. his death. Much as it was all planned

1118. out, this whole circumcision Passover

1119. thing and then this vision, it's all our

  1120. Lord Jesus.

1121. Whatever happens in your life, whatever

1122. transitions happen in our church or in

1123. our life, let's remember we are under

1124. authority. Therefore, we have authority

1125. to minister to others and to do God's

1126. work. We don't have to have a position

1127. in the church to have authority. We've

1128. got the authority to proclaim the

  1129. gospel.

  1130. He's already given us

1131. the great commission. Jesus said, "All

1132. authority is given me in heaven and

1133. earth. I want you to go baptize them in

1134. the name of the Father, Son, and Holy

1135. Spirit. And Lord, I'm with you always,

1136. even to the end of the age." Father, we

1137. thank you for what we've looked at

1138. today. Challenge us and change us from

  1139. uh ourselves.

1140. May we know what it is to have a fresh

1141. vision of the captain of our salvation,

1142. the Lord Jesus Christ, who was also and

1143. finally revealed in the Bible as the

1144. King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

  1145. He's not a private person. He's a public

1146. person. Public person. And that public

1147. person is the one who died for us and

1148. rose again. And it's on that work that

1149. all these other things were simply

1150. preceding it in a big wonderful story

1151. that began shortly after the world began

1152. and even plan before the world began. We

1153. thank you in Jesus name. Amen.

1154. Lord, as we go from this place,

  1155. loving you more,

  1156. trusting you more.

1157. May the power of your love and the light

1158. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1159. world. As we go from this place,
