  1. Holy God, I tremble before your word, pleading and begging that you would help me.

  2. You would help me to bring honor to your name and to love this church, to love this people.

  3. Father, would you anoint my lips? I am a man of unclean lips.

  4. Just like Moses, I complain that I don't know how to speak, but Lord, you are the creator of our mouths.

  5. You are in control of all things, and I know you've sovereignly created this opportunity.

  6. What a good opportunity it is to preach and teach your word.

  7. Thank you for this blessing. You are such a good God.

  8. We pray that our hearts would be stirred and that you alone would be the one thing that we seek in all that we do.

  9. God, help us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  10. Let's stand all together for the reading of God's word.

  11. Again, we're going to be reading from Luke 18, verses 18 to 34.

    Luke 18:18–34

  12. Luke 18, verses 18 to 34.

    Luke 18:18–34

  13. And a ruler asked him,

  14. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  15. And Jesus said to him,

  16. Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.

  17. You know the commandments.

  18. Do not commit adultery.

  19. Do not murder.

  20. Do not steal.

  21. Do not bear false witness.

  22. Honor your father and mother.

  23. And he said,

  24. All these I have kept for my youth.

  25. When Jesus heard this, he said to him,

  26. One thing you still lack.

  27. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor.

  28. And you will have treasure in heaven.

  29. And come, follow me.

  30. But when he heard these things, he became very sad.

  31. For he was extremely rich.

  32. Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said,

  33. How difficult it is to those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God.

  34. For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle

  35. than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.

  36. Those who heard it said,

  37. Then who can be saved?

  38. And, but he said,

  39. What is impossible with man is possible with God.

  40. And Peter said,

  41. See, we have left our homes and followed you.

  42. And he said to them,

  43. Truly I say to you,

  44. There is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children

  45. for the sake of the kingdom of God

  46. who will not receive many times more in this time

  47. and in the age to come eternal life.

  48. And taking the twelve,

  49. he said to them,

  50. See, we are going up to Jerusalem

  51. and everything that is written about the Son of Man

  52. by the prophets will be accomplished.

  53. For we will be delivered over to the Gentiles

  54. and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon.

  55. And after flogging him,

  56. they will kill him.

  57. And on the third day,

  58. he will rise.

  59. But they understood none of these things.

  60. This saying was hidden from them

  61. and they did not grasp what was said.

  62. This is God,

  63. God's holy and authoritative word.

  64. Please be seated.

  65. We have all experienced various forms of and varying degrees of privilege.

  66. In our world,

  67. privilege opens doors.

  68. It gives you access to places and people that others might not have access to.

  69. It tips public perception in your favor.

  70. It confers power on those who possess it.

  71. But in our passage for today,

  72. we learn that the kingdom of God is unlike the kingdoms of this world.

  73. It is an upside down kingdom

  74. that even the rich cannot enter.

  75. In fact, it is impossible to enter the kingdom of God

  76. except through faith in Christ the King,

  77. which is our main point of the sermon today.

  78. So first, we're going to be exploring how the text

  79. speaks about the upside down kingdom in verses 18 to 30,

  80. then talks about an unlikely king in verses 31 to 34.

  81. A ruler asks Jesus a question in verse 18.

  82. Luke usually specifies what kind of ruler this person is.

  83. For example, in Luke 8, 41,

  84. he calls Jairus a ruler of the synagogue.

  85. And in Luke 14, 1, mentions a ruler of the Pharisees.

  86. When he doesn't specify it,

  87. he is referring to the members of the Sanhedrin,

  88. which was the highest Jewish ruling council

  89. on religious, political, and legal matters.

  90. This would explain why Jesus assumed

  91. that this ruler knows the commandments in verse 20.

  92. This ruler is a VIP by all measures.

  93. He had religious standing,

  94. political standing,

  95. social standing,

  96. and as we find out in verse 23,

  97. economic standing,

  98. since he was extremely rich.

  99. He has all the privilege that you could imagine.

  100. And he asked Jesus,

  101. good teacher,

  102. what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  103. And to hear someone like this

  104. address him as good teacher

  105. and seek his spiritual direction

  106. must have been flattering to Jesus.

  107. But Jesus responds with a correction

  108. in verse 18.

  109. Why?

  110. Why do you call me good?

  111. No one is good except God alone.

  112. In the original Greek,

  113. the personal pronoun me

  114. is fronted for emphasis.

  115. It's why me do you call good?

  116. So we should read it as

  117. why do you call me good?

  118. No one is good except God alone.

  119. Jesus is not denying that he is in fact good.

  120. He is good because he is the son of God,

  121. the second person of the triune God

  122. who alone is good.

  123. But Jesus is here challenging

  124. the rich ruler's shallow understanding

  125. of moral goodness.

  126. He is confronting what Sean calls

  127. the PGP delusion,

  128. the pretty good person delusion.

  129. Many people in this world

  130. think of themselves as

  131. pretty good people.

  132. I'm sure you can think of some of them.

  133. And this ruler likewise

  134. believed that some human beings,

  135. especially esteemed religious teachers

  136. like Jesus,

  137. were quote-unquote good people.

  138. But he really should have known better.

  139. Psalm 53, 1-3 says,

  140. The fool says in his heart,

  141. there is no God.

  142. They are corrupt,

  143. doing abominable iniquity.

  144. There is none who does good.

  145. God looks down from heaven

  146. on the children of man

  147. to see if there are any

  148. who understand,

  149. who seek after God.

  150. They have all fallen away.

  151. Together they have become corrupt.

  152. There is none who does good,

  153. not even one.

  154. There is not one man in this world

  155. that is good in an absolute sense.

  156. Only God is good.

  157. This ruler thinks that

  158. he can attain eternal life

  159. by doing.

  160. By doing good.

  161. He thinks that he can make the cut.

  162. And Jesus reminds him

  163. no human being can be called good

  164. in an absolute unqualified sense.

  165. No one is good

  166. by God's perfect,

  167. unattainable standards.

  168. That's precisely why

  169. Jesus had to come to save us.

  170. As Jesus said in the preceding passage,

  171. it's not those who trust

  172. in their own righteousness,

  173. but those who humbly entrust themselves

  174. to Christ with Christ-like faith

  175. that will be saved.

  176. We are not good people,

  177. but the good God

  178. sent his son

  179. to be the good teacher

  180. to instruct us

  181. in the way of salvation.

  182. So this ruler is unwittingly

  183. acknowledging something profound.

  184. Jesus really is good

  185. because he is the son of God,

  186. the chosen one of God,

  187. the messianic king.

  188. If this ruler really understood this,

  189. he would have left everything behind

  190. to follow Jesus

  191. as Jesus invites him to do

  192. in verse 22.

  193. But as we will see,

  194. this ruler did not have that faith.

  195. This ruler's question

  196. is exactly the same

  197. as the question

  198. that a Jewish leaguer scholar

  199. asked Jesus earlier

  200. in Luke 10, 25.

  201. And in the same way,

  202. he answered the question before.

  203. Jesus now points the ruler

  204. to God's law

  205. in verse 20.

  206. You know the commandments.

  207. Do not commit adultery.

  208. Do not murder.

  209. Do not steal.

  210. Do not bear false witness.

  211. Honor your father and mother.

  212. Father.

  213. These commands come

  214. from the second half

  215. of the Ten Commandments,

  216. which we've been learning all about,

  217. which is a summary

  218. of the entire Old Testament law.

  219. The first four

  220. of the Ten Commandments

  221. deal with our love for God.

  222. And the latter six

  223. deal with our love for our neighbor.

  224. That's why the command

  225. to love God

  226. with our whole selves

  227. and our neighbors

  228. as ourselves

  229. is the greatest commandment

  230. that sums up

  231. the entire law of God.

  232. Jesus only lists

  233. the second half

  234. of the Ten Commandments

  235. that deal with

  236. our love for our neighbors.

  237. And that's not because

  238. loving God

  239. is less important

  240. than loving our neighbors.

  241. But it's because,

  242. as Jesus taught in Luke 10,

  243. our love for God

  244. finds concrete expression

  245. in our love for our neighbor.

  246. 1 John 4, 20 to 21

  247. puts it this way.

  248. If anyone says,

  249. I love God

  250. and hates his brother,

  251. he is a liar.

  252. For he who does not love

  253. his brother whom he has seen

  254. cannot love God

  255. whom he has not seen.

  256. And this commandment

  257. we have from him,

  258. whoever loves God

  259. must also love his brother.

  260. Similarly,

  261. our love for God

  262. whom we cannot see

  263. is demonstrated

  264. in our love

  265. for the neighbors

  266. whom we can see.

  267. Curiously,

  268. the Ten Commandment,

  269. which is what we

  270. would have heard today,

  271. which says,

  272. you shall not covet,

  273. is omitted

  274. from Jesus' list,

  275. possibly because

  276. it's the commandment

  277. that Jesus already knows

  278. that this rich young ruler

  279. is failing to keep.

  280. The rich young ruler

  281. replies in verse 21,

  282. and it exposes

  283. his prideful delusion.

  284. All these I have kept

  285. from my youth.

  286. All these I have kept

  287. from my youth.

  288. Jews believe that God

  289. holds children

  290. accountable for their

  291. moral actions

  292. only after they have

  293. become youths.

  294. So when the rich young ruler

  295. says,

  296. all these I have kept

  297. from my youth,

  298. he's saying

  299. that he's never failed

  300. to keep them.

  301. He is saying,

  302. if that's what's required

  303. for eternal life,

  304. then I can rest easy.

  305. because I'm all set.

  306. His self-righteous attitude

  307. is very similar

  308. to that of the Pharisee

  309. in earlier passages

  310. in Luke.

  311. When Jesus heard this,

  312. he says in verse 22,

  313. he said to him,

  314. one thing you still lack.

  315. Sell all that you have

  316. and distribute to the poor

  317. and you will have treasure

  318. in heaven

  319. and come,

  320. follow me.

  321. Jesus contrasts

  322. the one thing

  323. that the rich young ruler

  324. lacks with all that he has.

  325. He seemed to have it all.

  326. Political power,

  327. social clout,

  328. religious standing,

  329. and what's in view

  330. extreme wealth.

  331. But the abundance

  332. of his wealth

  333. was precisely

  334. what caused

  335. his spiritual poverty,

  336. his spiritual lack.

  337. As 1 John 3, 17 says,

  338. if anyone has

  339. the world's goods

  340. and sees his brother

  341. in need,

  342. yet closes his heart

  343. against him,

  344. how does God's love

  345. abide in him?

  346. Similarly,

  347. the rich young rulers,

  348. lack of generosity

  349. towards the poor,

  350. revealed a lack of love

  351. in his heart

  352. for his neighbors.

  353. But does this mean

  354. that all of us

  355. also have to give up

  356. our possessions

  357. in order to

  358. enter the kingdom of God

  359. and have treasure in heaven?

  360. I don't think

  361. that this means

  362. that Christians

  363. can't have

  364. or can't use money.

  365. It does not mean

  366. that in order

  367. to get into heaven

  368. we have to take

  369. a vow of poverty

  370. and to beg

  371. for our livings.

  372. We can see clearly

  373. that in the latter story

  374. of Zacchaeus,

  375. a rich tax collector

  376. who gets saved

  377. through faith

  378. in Jesus.

  379. But there's a reason

  380. why Jesus makes

  381. this criterion

  382. for entry

  383. for the kingdom of God

  384. for this rich ruler.

  385. He says in verse 23,

  386. but when he heard

  387. these things

  388. he became very sad

  389. for he was extremely rich.

  390. Jesus knew

  391. that the love of money

  392. was the one thing

  393. that held this rich ruler

  394. back from wholeheartedly

  395. following God.

  396. Jesus' invitation

  397. to follow him

  398. is a standard word

  399. that indicates

  400. discipleship.

  401. A disciple

  402. is someone

  403. who follows

  404. his teacher

  405. to learn

  406. through instruction

  407. and imitation.

  408. But instead

  409. of responding

  410. with joy

  411. at Jesus' invitation,

  412. the rich ruler

  413. became very sad

  414. because he knew

  415. he could not

  416. follow Christ

  417. because he was

  418. unwilling

  419. to relinquish

  420. his extreme wealth.

  421. Jesus said earlier

  422. in Luke 16, 13,

  423. no servant

  424. can serve

  425. two masters

  426. for either

  427. he will hate

  428. the one

  429. or love

  430. the other

  431. or he will be

  432. devoted to one

  433. and despise

  434. the other.

  435. You cannot

  436. serve God

  437. and money.

  438. This rich ruler

  439. was trying to serve

  440. both God

  441. and money

  442. and Jesus

  443. makes it clear

  444. that you must

  445. choose one

  446. or the other.

  447. Even though

  448. he was otherwise

  449. a law-abiding Jew,

  450. love of money

  451. was the one thing

  452. that he could not

  453. pronounce

  454. or renounce.

  455. This is a choice

  456. that faces

  457. each and every

  458. single one of us.

  459. What is the one thing

  460. that you lack?

  461. What's the one thing

  462. that you're not

  463. willing

  464. to give up

  465. for Jesus?

  466. Who is the one person

  467. that you love

  468. more than you love God?

  469. Is your academic

  470. performance

  471. or career advancements

  472. the first priority

  473. of your life?

  474. Is ensuring

  475. the future success

  476. of your child

  477. making sure

  478. that she outshines

  479. all her peers

  480. the overriding goal

  481. that takes precedence

  482. over your child's

  483. and your family's

  484. wholehearted pursuit

  485. of Christ?

  486. Is appeasing

  487. your boyfriend

  488. or girlfriend

  489. your husband

  490. or wife

  491. your parents

  492. your boss

  493. your professor

  494. or advisor

  495. more important

  496. to you

  497. than pleasing

  498. Christ?

  499. Is earning

  500. and saving

  501. more and more

  502. money

  503. so that you have

  504. financial security

  505. and a deposit

  506. for the future

  507. your most pressing

  508. concern?

  509. All of these things

  510. must be second

  511. to Christ.

  512. Jesus must be first.

  513. If we want to call

  514. Christ our Lord

  515. and King

  516. we must subordinate

  517. all other allegiances

  518. to him.

  519. Notice that Jesus

  520. does not negotiate

  521. the terms of discipleship

  522. as this rich ruler

  523. turns away in sadness.

  524. He is uncompromising.

  525. He doesn't say

  526. hey hey

  527. don't leave so soon.

  528. Okay

  529. alright alright

  530. let me cut you a deal.

  531. Since you're keeping

  532. all these other commandments

  533. I'll turn a blind eye

  534. to you know

  535. this one thing

  536. you could still be

  537. my disciple.

  538. No

  539. he says

  540. one thing

  541. you still lack

  542. sell all

  543. that you have

  544. and distribute

  545. to the poor

  546. and you will have

  547. treasure in heaven

  548. and come

  549. follow me.

  550. You cannot

  551. follow me

  552. until you renounce

  553. your love of money.

  554. You cannot

  555. be my disciple

  556. as long as money

  557. is more important

  558. to you

  559. than me.

  560. That's what Jesus

  561. says.

  562. if your great desire

  563. in life

  564. is for earthly treasure

  565. then you cannot

  566. desire God

  567. as your greatest treasure

  568. and therefore

  569. you cannot

  570. be Christian.

  571. If we live

  572. for the treasures

  573. of earth

  574. we should not

  575. expect

  576. to have treasures

  577. in heaven.

  578. seeing that

  579. the rich

  580. ruler

  581. had

  582. become sad

  583. Jesus

  584. laments

  585. in verse 24

  586. how difficult

  587. it is

  588. for those

  589. who have wealth

  590. to enter

  591. the kingdom

  592. of God.

  593. It's hard

  594. for wealthy

  595. people to enter

  596. the kingdom

  597. of God

  598. and it's

  599. highly unfortunate

  600. that we live

  601. in one of the

  602. richest parts

  603. of the entire

  604. world.

  605. 24-7

  606. Wall Street

  607. which publishes

  608. financial news

  609. and opinion pieces

  610. online

  611. reviewed median

  612. household income

  613. data from the

  614. U.S. Census Bureau

  615. from 381

  616. U.S. metro

  617. areas

  618. and concluded

  619. that the

  620. Boston-Cambridge-Newton

  621. metro area

  622. is one of only

  623. five metro areas

  624. where most

  625. households earn

  626. at least

  627. $85,000

  628. a year.

  629. I have no idea

  630. when that's

  631. stated

  632. or when

  633. Sean wrote

  634. this sermon

  635. but that

  636. sounds about

  637. right.

  638. It's one of

  639. the five

  640. richest cities

  641. in the

  642. United States.

  643. It's hard

  644. for our

  645. friends and

  646. neighbors

  647. in Cambridge

  648. and Boston

  649. to enter

  650. the kingdom

  651. of God

  652. because of

  653. their wealth.

  654. Do you

  655. really get

  656. this?

  657. As Christians

  658. we should

  659. know better

  660. than to

  661. dream of

  662. getting rich

  663. and living

  664. large.

  665. If that's

  666. what you

  667. daydream

  668. about

  669. that's

  670. a spiritual

  671. emergency

  672. you're in

  673. grave

  674. trouble.

  675. It is

  676. difficult

  677. for those

  678. who have

  679. wealth

  680. to enter

  681. the kingdom

  682. of God.

  683. Why?

  684. Why in the

  685. world

  686. would you

  687. want to be

  688. rich?

  689. Don't

  690. desire to

  691. be rich.

  692. 1 Timothy

  693. 6, 9-10

  694. says,

  695. Those who

  696. desire to

  697. be rich

  698. fall into

  699. temptation,

  700. into a

  701. snare,

  702. into many

  703. senseless

  704. and harmful

  705. desires that

  706. plunge people

  707. into ruin

  708. and destruction.

  709. For the

  710. love of

  711. money is

  712. the root

  713. of all

  714. kinds of

  715. evils.

  716. It is

  717. through this

  718. craving that

  719. some have

  720. wandered away

  721. from the

  722. faith and

  723. pierced

  724. themselves

  725. with many

  726. pangs.

  727. Does

  728. falling into

  729. temptation,

  730. into a

  731. snare,

  732. into many

  733. senseless

  734. and harmful

  735. desires that

  736. plunge people

  737. into ruin

  738. and destruction

  739. sound enjoyable

  740. to you?

  741. Does being

  742. pierced with

  743. many pangs

  744. sound pleasurable

  745. to you?

  746. Get back to

  747. your senses,

  748. brothers and

  749. sisters.

  750. Don't

  751. desire to

  752. be rich.

  753. If you

  754. work hard

  755. and steward

  756. your resources

  757. well,

  758. and wealth

  759. is the

  760. incidental

  761. result of

  762. that,

  763. great,

  764. then great.

  765. in that

  766. case,

  767. use your

  768. money

  769. generously

  770. for the

  771. kingdom

  772. of God.

  773. Give

  774. sacrificially

  775. to the

  776. ministry of

  777. the gospel.

  778. Give

  779. liberally

  780. to the

  781. poor,

  782. but don't

  783. ever

  784. desire

  785. to be

  786. rich.

  787. Don't

  788. ever

  789. love

  790. money.

  791. Jesus

  792. continues

  793. his

  794. explanation

  795. in

  796. verse

  797. 25,

  798. for it

  799. is easier

  800. for a

  801. camel to

  802. go through

  803. the eye

  804. of a

  805. needle

  806. than

  807. for a

  808. rich

  809. person

  810. to

  811. enter

  812. the

  813. kingdom

  814. of

  815. God.

  816. The

  817. camel

  818. is the

  819. largest

  820. animal

  821. native

  822. to this

  823. part

  824. of the

  825. world.

  826. It can

  827. be about

  828. seven

  829. feet tall,

  830. I had no

  831. idea,

  832. complete

  833. with a

  834. giant hump

  835. or two

  836. in its

  837. back,

  838. and it

  839. makes a

  840. shocking

  841. and silly

  842. image.

  843. Good luck

  844. trying to

  845. fit that

  846. thing in

  847. an eye

  848. of a

  849. needle,

  850. which is

  851. so small

  852. that it's

  853. even hard

  854. to pass

  855. the end

  856. of a

  857. thread

  858. through it.

  859. People

  860. have had

  861. a hard

  862. time

  863. understanding

  864. this

  865. saying

  866. throughout

  867. church

  868. history

  869. because

  870. it is

  871. impossible

  872. for a

  873. camel to

  874. go through

  875. the eye

  876. of a

  877. needle.

  878. So,

  879. is Jesus

  880. saying that

  881. rich people

  882. can't be

  883. saved?

  884. Well,

  885. that can't

  886. possibly be.

  887. So,

  888. Jesus must

  889. be trying

  890. to say

  891. something

  892. else.

  893. In order

  894. to improve

  895. Jesus'

  896. teaching

  897. and make

  898. it more

  899. palatable

  900. to our

  901. sensibilities,

  902. so some

  903. people have

  904. suggested

  905. that at

  906. Jerusalem

  907. there was

  908. a certain

  909. gate

  910. called

  911. the

  912. needle's

  913. eye

  914. through

  915. which

  916. a

  917. camel

  918. could

  919. not

  920. pass

  921. but on

  922. its

  923. bended

  924. knees

  925. and after

  926. its burden

  927. had been

  928. taken off

  929. so the

  930. rich

  931. should not

  932. be able

  933. to pass

  934. along the

  935. narrow way

  936. that leads

  937. to life

  938. till he

  939. had put

  940. off the

  941. burden of

  942. sin

  943. and of

  944. riches

  945. that is

  946. by ceasing

  947. to love

  948. him.

  949. That's

  950. by Thomas

  951. Aquinas.

  952. The only

  953. trouble with

  954. this explanation

  955. is that

  956. there is

  957. no

  958. historical

  959. evidence

  960. whatsoever

  961. of a

  962. gate

  963. called

  964. the

  965. needle's

  966. eye

  967. at

  968. any

  969. point

  970. in

  971. Jerusalem's

  972. history.

  973. It's

  974. merely

  975. a romantic

  976. speculation.

  977. The point

  978. of Jesus'

  979. illustration

  980. is not

  981. that rich

  982. people have

  983. to lay

  984. aside

  985. their wealth

  986. in order

  987. to enter

  988. the kingdom

  989. just as

  990. camels

  991. must lay

  992. aside

  993. their

  994. burdens

  995. before

  996. entering

  997. through

  998. a

  999. low

  1000. gate.

  1001. The point

  1002. of the

  1003. illustration

  1004. is that

  1005. it is

  1006. impossible

  1007. for rich

  1008. people

  1009. to enter

  1010. the kingdom

  1011. of God.

  1012. This is

  1013. then confirmed

  1014. in verses

  1015. 26 to

  1016. 27.

  1017. Those who

  1018. heard it

  1019. then said

  1020. then who

  1021. can be

  1022. saved?

  1023. But Jesus

  1024. said what

  1025. is impossible

  1026. with man

  1027. is possible

  1028. with God.

  1029. This is

  1030. precisely

  1031. Jesus'

  1032. point.

  1033. It is

  1034. impossible

  1035. for the

  1036. rich

  1037. to enter

  1038. the kingdom

  1039. of God.

  1040. The allure

  1041. of money

  1042. is so

  1043. strong.

  1044. The distractions

  1045. that it

  1046. creates

  1047. are so

  1048. numerous.

  1049. The temptations

  1050. that it

  1051. multiplies

  1052. are so

  1053. enticing

  1054. that it's

  1055. impossible

  1056. for the

  1057. rich

  1058. to be

  1059. saved.

  1060. As

  1061. biblical

  1062. scholar

  1063. Daryl

  1064. Brock

  1065. puts it,

  1066. wealth

  1067. can shrink

  1068. the door

  1069. of the

  1070. kingdom

  1071. down

  1072. to an

  1073. impassable

  1074. people.

  1075. The

  1076. self-focused

  1077. security

  1078. of the

  1079. wealthy

  1080. is a

  1081. padlock

  1082. against

  1083. kingdom

  1084. entry.

  1085. In fact,

  1086. it's

  1087. impossible

  1088. for any

  1089. man to

  1090. enter the

  1091. kingdom

  1092. of God

  1093. with his

  1094. own

  1095. merit

  1096. and with

  1097. his own

  1098. strength.

  1099. But

  1100. hear,

  1101. hear,

  1102. brothers and

  1103. sisters,

  1104. hear his

  1105. hope.

  1106. What is

  1107. impossible

  1108. with man

  1109. is

  1110. possible

  1111. with God.

  1112. God alone

  1113. can wean

  1114. the rich

  1115. people away

  1116. from their

  1117. love of

  1118. money.

  1119. God alone

  1120. can wean

  1121. us away

  1122. from various

  1123. idols.

  1124. As Jesus

  1125. speaks of

  1126. salvation as

  1127. something that

  1128. is humanly

  1129. impossible,

  1130. Peter seeks

  1131. assurances from

  1132. him in

  1133. verses 28

  1134. to 30.

  1135. And Peter

  1136. said,

  1137. see,

  1138. we have

  1139. left our

  1140. homes and

  1141. followed you.

  1142. And he

  1143. said to

  1144. them,

  1145. truly,

  1146. I say to

  1147. you,

  1148. there is no

  1149. one who

  1150. has left

  1151. house or

  1152. wife or

  1153. brothers or

  1154. parents or

  1155. children for

  1156. the sake of

  1157. the kingdom

  1158. of God who

  1159. will not

  1160. receive many

  1161. times more

  1162. in this

  1163. time and

  1164. in the

  1165. age to

  1166. come.

  1167. Eternal

  1168. life.

  1169. As we

  1170. saw earlier

  1171. in Luke

  1172. 5,

  1173. 11,

  1174. 28,

  1175. Peter,

  1176. James,

  1177. John,

  1178. and Levi

  1179. have left

  1180. everything they

  1181. had and

  1182. followed Jesus.

  1183. This is what

  1184. Peter is

  1185. referring to.

  1186. And Jesus

  1187. commends them

  1188. as examples

  1189. of discipleship.

  1190. Many ancient

  1191. Jews were

  1192. disowned by

  1193. their families

  1194. for following

  1195. Christ.

  1196. Christians in

  1197. some other

  1198. places in the

  1199. world face

  1200. similar

  1201. ostracism

  1202. and persecution.

  1203. So to

  1204. some

  1205. believers

  1206. following

  1207. Christ

  1208. might

  1209. literally

  1210. mean

  1211. having to

  1212. leave

  1213. house,

  1214. wife,

  1215. brothers,

  1216. parents,

  1217. children for

  1218. the sake

  1219. of kingdom

  1220. of God.

  1221. But even

  1222. if this is

  1223. not literally

  1224. true for

  1225. you,

  1226. to be a

  1227. Christian

  1228. is to be

  1229. a person

  1230. who has

  1231. left house,

  1232. wife,

  1233. brothers,

  1234. sisters,

  1235. children for

  1236. the sake

  1237. of the

  1238. kingdom

  1239. of God.

  1240. In the

  1241. sense of

  1242. subordinating

  1243. all these

  1244. responsibilities

  1245. and commitments

  1246. to following

  1247. Christ.

  1248. So you

  1249. might own

  1250. a house,

  1251. you might

  1252. have a

  1253. spouse,

  1254. sibling,

  1255. parent,

  1256. or child,

  1257. but none

  1258. of them

  1259. must be

  1260. the controlling

  1261. center of

  1262. your life.

  1263. Your

  1264. priorities

  1265. and purposes

  1266. must be

  1267. submitted

  1268. to Christ.

  1269. Everything

  1270. and everyone,

  1271. including you,

  1272. yourself,

  1273. must be

  1274. second.

  1275. to Christ.

  1276. Yes,

  1277. this is

  1278. costly.

  1279. Yes,

  1280. this requires

  1281. sacrifice,

  1282. but oh,

  1283. it is worth

  1284. it.

  1285. Look at

  1286. the rewards

  1287. that Jesus

  1288. holds out

  1289. to us

  1290. in two parts

  1291. in verse 30.

  1292. He says,

  1293. we will receive

  1294. many times

  1295. more in

  1296. this time.

  1297. That's the

  1298. first stage

  1299. of our reward.

  1300. And in the

  1301. age to come,

  1302. eternal life.

  1303. that's the

  1304. second stage

  1305. of our reward.

  1306. These two

  1307. stages of

  1308. rewards

  1309. corresponds

  1310. to the

  1311. already but

  1312. not yet

  1313. nature of

  1314. the kingdom

  1315. of God.

  1316. God's

  1317. kingdom has

  1318. already broken

  1319. into our

  1320. world through

  1321. the life,

  1322. death,

  1323. resurrection,

  1324. and ascension

  1325. of Jesus

  1326. Christ,

  1327. but it has

  1328. not yet been

  1329. consummated.

  1330. It has not

  1331. yet been

  1332. brought to

  1333. full fruition.

  1334. salvation.

  1335. So we

  1336. will be

  1337. rewarded

  1338. in this

  1339. time with

  1340. many times

  1341. more than

  1342. what we

  1343. give up

  1344. for God,

  1345. but we

  1346. will also

  1347. be rewarded

  1348. later in

  1349. the age to

  1350. come with

  1351. eternal life.

  1352. Truly,

  1353. I say to

  1354. you,

  1355. Jesus says,

  1356. and that

  1357. means I

  1358. assure you,

  1359. I guarantee

  1360. it,

  1361. there is

  1362. no one,

  1363. not one,

  1364. who has

  1365. left house

  1366. or wife

  1367. or brothers

  1368. or parents

  1369. or children

  1370. for the sake

  1371. of the kingdom

  1372. of God

  1373. who will not

  1374. receive many

  1375. times more

  1376. in this time

  1377. and in the

  1378. age to come

  1379. eternal life.

  1380. Those who

  1381. give Jesus

  1382. the primacy

  1383. that he is

  1384. doing their

  1385. lives become

  1386. part of the

  1387. kingdom of

  1388. God.

  1389. As they

  1390. share their

  1391. lives and

  1392. possessions

  1393. with each

  1394. other,

  1395. we're part

  1396. of one

  1397. family.

  1398. We may

  1399. lose our

  1400. homes as

  1401. our exclusive

  1402. private property,

  1403. but we gain

  1404. a hundred times

  1405. more in the

  1406. homes of our

  1407. Christian brothers

  1408. and sisters.

  1409. We may lose

  1410. our spouses,

  1411. siblings,

  1412. parents,

  1413. and children,

  1414. but we gain

  1415. hundreds more

  1416. within the

  1417. family of God.

  1418. Some of you

  1419. have found in

  1420. the church the

  1421. family that you

  1422. have never had

  1423. in your birth

  1424. homes.

  1425. that's what

  1426. Jesus is

  1427. talking about.

  1428. Jesus said

  1429. earlier in

  1430. Luke 8,

  1431. 21,

  1432. my mother

  1433. and my

  1434. brothers are

  1435. those who

  1436. hear the

  1437. word of

  1438. God and

  1439. do it.

  1440. We receive

  1441. many times

  1442. more in

  1443. this time

  1444. and in

  1445. the age

  1446. to come

  1447. we will

  1448. also be

  1449. given eternal

  1450. life.

  1451. And in

  1452. short,

  1453. whatever we

  1454. give up for

  1455. God,

  1456. no matter

  1457. how much

  1458. we sacrifice

  1459. for the

  1460. sake of

  1461. the kingdom,

  1462. what we

  1463. gain from

  1464. the Lord

  1465. will be

  1466. far

  1467. greater.

  1468. Perhaps

  1469. you are not

  1470. yet a follower

  1471. of Christ.

  1472. You are

  1473. weighing the

  1474. costs of

  1475. discipleship.

  1476. Perhaps

  1477. you are

  1478. wrestling with

  1479. the one

  1480. thing that

  1481. you still

  1482. lack,

  1483. considering

  1484. whether or

  1485. not you

  1486. are willing

  1487. to pay

  1488. that price

  1489. to follow

  1490. Christ.

  1491. perhaps

  1492. you have

  1493. already

  1494. decided

  1495. to follow

  1496. Christ,

  1497. but you

  1498. are being

  1499. lured back

  1500. by the

  1501. treasures

  1502. of this

  1503. world

  1504. and

  1505. backsliding.

  1506. The

  1507. costs of

  1508. following

  1509. Christ

  1510. are high,

  1511. but they

  1512. are nothing

  1513. compared to

  1514. the eternal

  1515. rewards

  1516. that Christ

  1517. holds out

  1518. to you.

  1519. I pray you

  1520. understand the

  1521. weight of

  1522. that word

  1523. eternal.

  1524. Two summers

  1525. ago,

  1526. an Amsterdam

  1527. art dealer

  1528. and historian

  1529. named Jan

  1530. Six purchased

  1531. a painting

  1532. at Christie's,

  1533. a famous

  1534. British auction

  1535. house.

  1536. The painting

  1537. is a

  1538. portrait of

  1539. a young

  1540. gentleman,

  1541. and the

  1542. artist behind

  1543. the painting

  1544. was reputedly

  1545. one of the

  1546. disciples of

  1547. Dutch master

  1548. Rembrandt.

  1549. The pre-sale

  1550. estimate of

  1551. its value

  1552. was about

  1553. $20,000

  1554. to $27,000,

  1555. but Jan

  1556. Six paid

  1557. $172,000,

  1558. about seven

  1559. times more

  1560. than the

  1561. estimate.

  1562. So you

  1563. might say

  1564. he was

  1565. ripped off,

  1566. but the

  1567. art dealer

  1568. was onto

  1569. something.

  1570. The young

  1571. gentleman in

  1572. the portrait

  1573. is wearing

  1574. a velvet

  1575. coat with

  1576. an ornate

  1577. white lace

  1578. collar,

  1579. and Jan

  1580. Six observed

  1581. that the way

  1582. the lace

  1583. collar curls

  1584. at the

  1585. edges,

  1586. almost like

  1587. you could

  1588. put your

  1589. finger

  1590. underneath

  1591. it,

  1592. was a

  1593. clear

  1594. giveaway.

  1595. He believed

  1596. that the

  1597. painting was

  1598. both a

  1599. bit too

  1600. early and

  1601. a bit too

  1602. good to

  1603. be the

  1604. work of

  1605. Rembrandt's

  1606. disciple,

  1607. and concluded

  1608. that it must

  1609. be the work

  1610. of the

  1611. Dutch master

  1612. himself.

  1613. So he

  1614. shelled out

  1615. $172,000

  1616. to buy it

  1617. at the

  1618. auction,

  1619. and his

  1620. hunch has

  1621. paid off

  1622. because the

  1623. portrait is

  1624. being hailed

  1625. by art

  1626. historians as

  1627. the first

  1628. previously

  1629. unknown

  1630. painting by

  1631. Rembrandt

  1632. to surface

  1633. in nearly

  1634. half a

  1635. century.

  1636. And guess

  1637. how much

  1638. the last

  1639. Rembrandt

  1640. painting was

  1641. auctioned off

  1642. for at

  1643. Christie's?

  1644. Over

  1645. $33

  1646. million

  1647. in 2009.

  1648. The art

  1649. dealer paid

  1650. a very high

  1651. price for

  1652. that portrait,

  1653. but what he

  1654. gained was

  1655. far greater.

  1656. He was

  1657. willing to

  1658. pay the

  1659. price because

  1660. he knew what

  1661. it was really

  1662. worth.

  1663. Likewise,

  1664. only those

  1665. who see

  1666. God truly

  1667. as the

  1668. infinite

  1669. priceless

  1670. treasure that

  1671. he is will

  1672. forsake earthly

  1673. treasures to

  1674. follow Jesus

  1675. and enter the

  1676. kingdom of

  1677. God.

  1678. Truly,

  1679. I say to

  1680. you,

  1681. there is no

  1682. one who

  1683. has left

  1684. house or

  1685. wife or

  1686. brothers or

  1687. parents or

  1688. children for

  1689. the sake of

  1690. kingdom of

  1691. God who

  1692. will not

  1693. receive many

  1694. times more

  1695. in this

  1696. time and

  1697. in the

  1698. age to

  1699. come eternal

  1700. life.

  1701. God's

  1702. kingdom is

  1703. an upside

  1704. down kingdom

  1705. and it is

  1706. impossible to

  1707. enter it

  1708. except through

  1709. faith in

  1710. Jesus Christ.

  1711. Those who

  1712. cling to their

  1713. earthly riches

  1714. will be

  1715. turned away

  1716. and follow

  1717. Christ,

  1718. they alone

  1719. can enter

  1720. in.

  1721. But how

  1722. does God

  1723. change us?

  1724. How does

  1725. that reorientation

  1726. take place?

  1727. Taking his

  1728. twelve disciples

  1729. aside,

  1730. Jesus instructs

  1731. them in

  1732. verses 31 to

  1733. 33 which

  1734. comes to the

  1735. second portion

  1736. of our

  1737. sermon today.

  1738. See, we are

  1739. going up to

  1740. Jerusalem and

  1741. everything that

  1742. is written about

  1743. the Son of

  1744. Man by the

  1745. prophets will be

  1746. accomplished.

  1747. For he will be

  1748. delivered over to

  1749. the Gentiles and

  1750. will be mocked and

  1751. shamefully treated and

  1752. spit upon.

  1753. But after flogging

  1754. him, they will

  1755. kill him and on

  1756. the third day he

  1757. will rise.

  1758. Son of

  1759. Man is a term

  1760. that Jesus

  1761. frequently uses to

  1762. refer to himself

  1763. indirectly.

  1764. It highlights the

  1765. fact that he is

  1766. not only the

  1767. Son of God as

  1768. he is described

  1769. in other places

  1770. throughout the

  1771. gospel, but also

  1772. the Son of

  1773. Man, the God

  1774. who took

  1775. humanity so

  1776. that he can

  1777. identify with

  1778. us, take on

  1779. our sins in

  1780. death, and

  1781. represent us to

  1782. God the Father.

  1783. This is now the

  1784. fourth time that

  1785. Jesus predicts his

  1786. imminent suffering,

  1787. and it's a

  1788. reference to his

  1789. death on the

  1790. cross.

  1791. A few chapters

  1792. later, these

  1793. predictions will be

  1794. fulfilled, and

  1795. Jesus will be

  1796. delivered over to

  1797. the Gentiles, mocked,

  1798. shamefully treated,

  1799. and killed on the

  1800. cross.

  1801. But on the third

  1802. day, he will rise

  1803. after his death.

  1804. death.

  1805. Interestingly, each

  1806. of the four

  1807. predictions of

  1808. suffering align

  1809. responsibility to

  1810. different human

  1811. parties.

  1812. In chapter 9,

  1813. verse 22, the

  1814. Jewish elders and

  1815. chief priests and

  1816. scribes are to

  1817. blame, and in

  1818. 914, the hands of

  1819. men are to blame,

  1820. and in 1725, this

  1821. generation is to

  1822. blame, and here in

  1823. 1832, the Gentiles

  1824. are to blame.

  1825. These four

  1826. predictions then

  1827. implicate Jews,

  1828. Gentiles, this

  1829. generation, and all

  1830. of humanity in

  1831. general.

  1832. People throughout

  1833. history have tried

  1834. to single out

  1835. Jews or Gentiles or

  1836. people of Jesus'

  1837. generation for his

  1838. death, but that's

  1839. only partially true.

  1840. they were all

  1841. guilty, and we

  1842. are all guilty

  1843. because it's for

  1844. our sins that

  1845. Jesus had to die

  1846. on the cross.

  1847. Yet in the

  1848. ultimate sense, it

  1849. is God who is

  1850. bringing all this

  1851. about.

  1852. That's what we see

  1853. in verse 31.

  1854. Jesus says that

  1855. everything that is

  1856. written about the

1857. Son of Man by the

  1858. prophets will be

  1859. accomplished.

  1860. That's passive.

  1861. That's passive

  1862. language.

  1863. It will be

  1864. accomplished.

  1865. By who then?

  1866. This is what

  1867. grammarians call

  1868. the divine

  1869. passive.

  1870. The implied

  1871. subject of the

  1872. verb is God.

  1873. God is

  1874. accomplishing all

  1875. this.

  1876. And why?

  1877. Because it is

  1878. through the death

  1879. of his only Son

  1880. that God restores

  1881. sinners to the

  1882. kingdom of God.

  1883. Remember what

  1884. Jesus said

  1885. earlier.

  1886. No one is good

  1887. except God

  1888. alone.

  1889. We all lack

  1890. something.

  1891. We do not

  1892. deserve to be

  1893. entered, admitted

  1894. into the kingdom

  1895. of God.

  1896. God in his

  1897. perfection and

  1898. his holiness

  1899. does not tolerate

  1900. sin or evil.

  1901. And the question

  1902. begs who then

  1903. can be saved?

  1904. Jesus answers in

  1905. verse 27.

  1906. What is

  1907. impossible with

  1908. man is possible

  1909. with God.

  1910. It's to atone for

  1911. the sins of his

  1912. people that Jesus

  1913. died on the cross.

  1914. It's to give us

  1915. eternal resurrection

  1916. life that Jesus

  1917. raised us from the

  1918. dead.

  1919. God.

  1920. Psalm 130,

  1921. 3-8,

  1922. comments on this

  1923. dilemma.

  1924. If you, O Lord,

  1925. should mark

  1926. iniquities,

  1927. who, O Lord,

  1928. could stand?

  1929. But with you

  1930. there is

  1931. forgiveness.

  1932. Thank you, God.

  1933. That you may be

  1934. feared.

  1935. I wait for the

  1936. Lord.

  1937. My soul

  1938. waits.

  1939. And in his

  1940. soul I hope.

  1941. My soul waits

  1942. for the Lord

  1943. more than

  1944. watchmen for

  1945. the morning.

  1946. More than

  1947. watchmen for

  1948. the morning.

  1949. O Israel,

  1950. hope in the

  1951. Lord.

  1952. For with the

  1953. Lord there is

  1954. steadfast love.

  1955. And with him

  1956. is plentiful

  1957. redemption.

  1958. And he will

  1959. redeem Israel

  1960. from all his

  1961. iniquities.

  1962. The psalmist

  1963. prophesied that

  1964. though all of

  1965. us are guilty

  1966. and none of

  1967. us are able

  1968. to stand before

  1969. God, that God

  1970. himself would

  1971. come to

  1972. redeem his

  1973. people from

  1974. their iniquities.

  1975. That's what he

  1976. did when he

  1977. sent his one

  1978. and only son,

  1979. Jesus Christ,

  1980. as his

  1981. representative,

  1982. the messianic

  1983. king.

  1984. Jesus is the

  1985. ransom price

  1986. to buy us

  1987. back from our

  1988. slavery to sin

  1989. and death.

  1990. Jesus is the

  1991. unlikely king

  1992. who rescues

  1993. his people

  1994. and restores

  1995. them to his

  1996. upside-down

  1997. kingdom.

  1998. Jesus' prediction

  1999. of suffering was

  2000. plain enough

  2001. because it

  2002. defied

  2003. expectations so

  2004. thoroughly.

  2005. It says in

  2006. verse 34

  2007. that the twelve

  2008. understood none

  2009. of these things.

  2010. This saying was

  2011. hidden from them

  2012. and they did

  2013. not grasp

  2014. what was said.

  2015. They expected

  2016. God's Messiah

  2017. to march into

  2018. Jerusalem with

  2019. his followers,

  2020. the city in

  2021. which Jewish

  2022. kings of old

  2023. reigned,

  2024. and begin his

  2025. overthrow of

  2026. the Roman Empire

  2027. that had

  2028. subjugated the

  2029. Jews.

  2030. But that would

  2031. not accomplish

  2032. the impossible.

  2033. That would not

  2034. get camels

  2035. through the eye

  2036. of the needle.

  2037. That would free

  2038. them from their

  2039. political oppression

  2040. but not from

  2041. their spiritual

  2042. oppression.

  2043. That would

  2044. wean them off

  2045. from the Roman

  2046. Empire but not

  2047. from the idols

  2048. of their own

  2049. hearts.

  2050. That's why Jesus

  2051. had to suffer

  2052. and die.

  2053. When we confess

  2054. Jesus Christ as

  2055. our Lord and

  2056. believe in our

  2057. hearts that he

  2058. is the one who

  2059. died and raised

  2060. for our salvation,

  2061. we become one

  2062. with Christ

  2063. through our

  2064. faith.

  2065. we become

  2066. partakers

  2067. in his death

  2068. and resurrection

  2069. so that we

  2070. become dead

  2071. to sin

  2072. and alive

  2073. to Christ.

  2074. We are born

  2075. again into the

  2076. family of God

  2077. and we are

  2078. given new

  2079. hearts and

  2080. filled with the

  2081. spirit of God.

  2082. This is the

  2083. only way

  2084. that the camels

  2085. go through the

  2086. eye of the

  2087. needle.

  2088. And it's when

  2089. we live in

  2090. light of this

  2091. objective reality

  2092. reality that

  2093. more and more

  2094. the idols

  2095. of our

  2096. hearts,

  2097. they lose

  2098. their grip

  2099. in our

  2100. subjective

  2101. experience.

  2102. It says in

  2103. 2 Corinthians

  2104. 3.18,

  2105. have you

  2106. beheld the

  2107. glory of the

  2108. Lord?

  2109. Do you

  2110. love him

  2111. more than

  2112. the idols

  2113. of the

  2114. earth?

  2115. Look to

  2116. the cross

  2117. where Jesus

  2118. bled for you.

  2119. Look to

  2120. the empty

  2121. tomb

  2122. which Jesus

  2123. rose

  2124. victoriously.

  2125. Let go

  2126. of the

  2127. idols of

  2128. this world.

  2129. Let go

  2130. of your

  2131. love of

  2132. money and

  2133. take hold

  2134. of Jesus

  2135. who alone

  2136. is your

  2137. salvation.

  2138. As the

  2139. 19th century

  2140. hymn written

  2141. by Oro

  2142. Rowan

  2143. entitled

  2144. Hast thou

  2145. heard him,

  2146. seen him,

  2147. known him,

  2148. puts it

  2149. what has

  2150. stripped the

  2151. beauty of

  2152. the idols

  2153. of the

  2154. earth.

  2155. Not a

  2156. sense of

  2157. right or

  2158. duty,

  2159. but the

  2160. sight of

  2161. peerless

  2162. worth.

  2163. Let's bow

  2164. our heads

  2165. in prayer.

  2166. God,

  2167. help us

  2168. to be a

  2169. people that

  2170. we would

  2171. want the

  2172. one thing,

  2173. just like

  2174. David prayed,

  2175. that the

  2176. one thing

  2177. that we

  2178. seek is

  2179. your glory,

  2180. to dwell

  2181. with you

  2182. in your

  2183. temple,

  2184. that we

  2185. would sit

  2186. at your

  2187. feet and

  2188. let your

  2189. words be

  2190. the food

  2191. we eat,

  2192. that we

  2193. would say,

  2194. man does

  2195. not live

  2196. by bread

  2197. alone,

  2198. we live

  2199. by your

  2200. words.

  2201. God,

  2202. help us

  2203. to pursue

  2204. you with

  2205. wholehearted

  2206. devotion,

  2207. single-minded

  2208. focus,

  2209. that all

  2210. other things,

  2211. we would

  2212. lay aside

  2213. all other

  2214. burdens

  2215. to seek

  2216. after you,

  2217. Jesus,

  2218. for you

  2219. alone are

  2220. worthy,

  2221. you alone

  2222. deserve

  2223. our entire

  2224. lives,

  2225. so we

  2226. lift up

  2227. our ransom

  2228. lives to

  2229. you,

  2230. take it

  2231. and use

  2232. it as

  2233. you see

  2234. fit for

  2235. the glory

  2236. of your

  2237. kingdom

  2238. and of

  2239. your name,

  2240. God.

  2241. Help us,

  2242. in Jesus'

  2243. name we

  2244. pray,

  2245. amen.

  2246. Amen.

  2247. Thank you.
