  1. Exodus 20, the end of the Ten Commandments is where we find ourselves today.

  2. And our title for our message is the fear of God.

  3. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has a fear of wasp.

  4. I like a lot of things that God has created.

  5. Wasp are not one of them.

  6. I feel they came from the fall or after the fall.

  7. The reason for that fear is you can't reason with a wasp.

  8. You can't become friends with a wasp.

  9. And unlike other bees, they seem to always be in attack mode, right?

  10. So you can't just get close and observe them.

  11. They also are unlike honeybees in that they can just keep stinging you, unending.

  12. So that has instilled a fear for me that makes me not want to get close and do anything near around wasp.

  13. Our passage this morning, our sermon, is about the fear of God.

  14. There's aspects around that type of fear of wasp and anything else that's scary that's similar to the fear of God.

  15. But there's so much more to the fear of God that is very important to us as Christians.

  16. And so my prayer and my hope is as we go through this passage and we look at this, that it will be important.

  17. It will be helpful for our lives as we move forward.

  18. A proper fear of God is one of our greatest weapons against sin.

  19. The fear of God, a weapon for us to fight against sin.

  20. Let's open in prayer this morning and then we're going to read our passage.

  21. Lord, as we come to you this morning and as we read your word and as we open it up,

  22. we ask that you would meet us, that you would teach us, that you would show us different aspects of you

  23. and the fear of you and what that means.

  24. May you take away distractions.

  25. May you encourage us where we are.

  26. And we ask these things in your name. Amen.

  27. Exodus chapter 20.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  28. We're going to go from verse 18 to the end of the chapter.

  29. If you would stand with me as we read this together.

  30. Starting in verse 18.

  31. Then when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet

  32. and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled.

  33. And they stood far off and said to Moses,

  34. You speak to us and we will listen.

  35. But do not let God speak to us lest we die.

  36. Moses said to the people,

  37. Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.

  38. The people stood far off while Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was.

  39. And the Lord said to Moses,

  40. Thus you will say to the peoples of Israel,

  41. You have seen for yourselves that I have talked with you from heaven.

  42. You shall not make gods of silver to be with me,

  43. nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold.

  44. An altar of earth you shall make for me,

  45. and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings,

  46. your sheep and your oxen.

  47. In every place where I cause my name to be remembered,

  48. I will come to you and bless you.

  49. If you make me an altar of stone,

  50. you shall not build it of hewn stones,

  51. for if you wield your tool on it,

  52. you profane it.

  53. And you shall not go up by steps to my altar,

  54. that your nakedness be not exposed on it.

  55. You may be seated.

  56. If you remember back just one chapter,

  57. chapter 19,

  58. God called the people to Mount Sinai,

  59. and they were experiencing some of these

  60. same terrifying elements that we see here in our passage.

  61. The thunder, the lightning, the sound of trumpet,

  62. the mountain shaking and smoking.

  63. God's presence had come down on the mountain,

  64. and his presence was unmistakable.

  65. If you had been in the area,

  66. anywhere nearby,

  67. God's arrival would not have been missed.

  68. The Israelites here were witnessing the glory

  69. and the majesty and the power of God Almighty

  70. coming down to them.

  71. Even to be able to stand and experience this event

  72. without being driven to their knees in fear

  73. or knocked to the ground by the sheer force

  74. of God's presence coming before them,

  75. really is just a grace of God to them.

  76. It is because God decided to come down and speak to them

  77. that he gave them the ability to even stand

  78. where they were at the foot of the mountain.

  79. He came to his people to give them

  80. a fuller picture of himself,

  81. to lay out for them how they were to live.

  82. See, God had chosen them to be a holy nation,

  83. but now they needed to know how to live as a holy nation.

  84. The God of heaven and earth came to them

  85. and spoke words to them.

  86. The Ten Commandments that we've been talking about.

  87. They were given to the people of God.

  88. As we look at verse 18, it says,

  89. Now when all the people saw the thunder

  90. and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet

  91. and the mountains smoking,

  92. the people were afraid and trembled,

  93. and they stood far off.

  94. It says that they saw these things.

  95. Now not all of these are things that we see.

  96. You can't see thunder.

  97. You can't see the sound of a trumpet.

  98. But what is meant is they experienced

  99. all these things together.

  100. The sound and the shaking that comes with thunder.

  101. You've felt that before

  102. as you're close to lightning when it goes off.

  103. God had descended down on this mountain in fire.

  104. Was something burning in that?

  105. Was there a smell that came from that

  106. as the mountain is on fire?

  107. As the mountain shook and the ground and the rocks

  108. were moved by the very presence of God coming down.

  109. What was that even like?

  110. God rocking the wilderness visually, audibly, physically.

  111. Thinking of that, it's no surprise

  112. that the people were afraid and trembled.

  113. Back in chapter 19, as they came to the mountain,

  114. remember that the people took their stand

  115. at the foot of the mountain.

  116. It says that.

  117. That's where they started out.

  118. But it's not where they ended up.

  119. It doesn't say in the Bible,

  120. but it's possible that after every commandment

  121. that is given, that God breaks out with the trumpet.

  122. That thunder and lightning sounds

  123. signifying that the word of the Lord had been spoken.

  124. So every time a commandment is given,

  125. they're terrified more, and so they step back.

  126. So that after 10 commandments,

  127. they're no longer at the foot of the mountain.

  128. They're quite removed.

  129. They're at a distance.

  130. They're now far off.

  131. And in verse 19, they say to Moses,

  132. you speak to us.

  133. We'll listen.

  134. But don't let God speak to us, lest we die.

  135. They said, Moses, you're okay.

  136. We can deal with you.

  137. We can connect.

  138. We can relate to you.

  139. But not God.

  140. He's too much.

  141. We might die.

  142. Now, I'm not saying that what they experienced

  143. wasn't terrifying.

  144. And I know it's easy for me to stand here

  145. not being there and judge them by what they did.

  146. However, there seems to be a breakdown

  147. in their understanding of what is going on.

  148. Of what God wants to teach them.

  149. And the reason why I say this is for two reasons.

  150. First, for them to think that they might die

  151. means either that they don't trust God

  152. or they don't completely understand

  153. his calling of them to be his people.

  154. Because remember back at Mount Sinai,

  155. before the 10 commandments,

  156. just one chapter ago,

  157. Moses goes up to the mountain.

  158. He meets with God.

  159. God gives him a message back to the people.

  160. And it's this.

  161. You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians

  162. and how I bore you on eagle's wings

  163. and brought you to myself.

  164. Now, therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice

  165. and keep my covenant,

  166. you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples.

  167. For all the earth is mine.

  168. And you shall be to me a kingdom of priests

  169. and a holy nation.

  170. So as they heard that,

  171. there's an aspect of that that they missed

  172. because if they had gotten it properly and completely,

  173. then they would not have thought

  174. that God was going to kill them.

  175. And how else would they be,

  176. would they think that they were going to die?

  177. Were they worried that they might get struck by lightning?

  178. Were the mountain would shake too much

  179. and fall on them?

  180. Did they not trust God

  181. that he was in control over all of nature?

  182. I think he proved that point out

  183. through the ten plagues

  184. and the parting of the Red Sea.

  185. So that's one reason.

  186. Another reason why I don't think

  187. they understood God's intentions

  188. is because Moses comes back

  189. and has to explain this to them.

  190. And it's very helpful.

  191. He says this in verse 20.

  192. Do not fear,

  193. for God has come to test you

  194. that the fear of him may be before you

  195. that you may not sin.

  196. And now at first,

  197. this verse sounds a little

  198. like it's contradicting itself.

  199. Do not fear.

  200. God's testing you

  201. that the fear of him may be with you.

  202. Don't fear,

  203. but fear.

  204. Let's take this verse

  205. and look at it a little bit closer.

  206. Do not let God speak to us

  207. lest we die.

  208. That's what they just said.

  209. And to that,

  210. Moses is saying,

  211. do not fear.

  212. He's not going to kill you.

  213. He's telling them

  214. not to be afraid

  215. of God ending their life

  216. at this point.

  217. That's not what this is about.

  218. Rather,

  219. he's saying,

  220. God has come to test you.

  221. To prove you.

  222. That is,

  223. to see if God's presence

  224. will produce in you

  225. a fear,

  226. a reverence,

  227. an obedience

  228. that God is calling for

  229. from his people.

  230. Now,

  231. God could have decided

  232. from the very beginning

  233. that whenever

  234. he spoke

  235. and came to

  236. a human,

  237. he would do so

  238. in a

  239. soft voice.

  240. Maybe in a calm

  241. and a very relatable

  242. fashion.

  243. So that man felt

  244. at ease with God

  245. and their relationship

  246. together.

  247. And we can see that

  248. a little bit

  249. even in

  250. the Garden of Eden

  251. as God comes

  252. to Adam

  253. and they walk

  254. together

  255. in the cool

  256. of the day

  257. and they have

  258. a relationship.

  259. That sounds nice.

  260. However,

  261. it fails to display

  262. and to

  263. describe

  264. the very attributes

  265. of God

  266. that are important

  267. for us to understand.

  268. See,

  269. as sinful humans,

  270. we're always

  271. striving to

  272. be God,

  273. right?

  274. We're striving

  275. to be the one

  276. in control

  277. of our life.

  278. We want everything

  279. to be under our control,

  280. our decisions,

  281. what we want,

  282. not God.

  283. We'll pull God out

  284. when we need

  285. a little help,

  286. but I'm the one

  287. steering this plane,

  288. right?

  289. That's just our

  290. natural bit

  291. as Christians.

  292. So,

  293. we need to have

  294. a right

  295. and a proper

  296. view of God

  297. in order to put

  298. that

  299. in its place.

  300. We can be told

  301. how to show

  302. reverence

  303. and honor

  304. to God,

  305. that is true,

  306. but it falls

  307. tragically short

  308. if we

  309. miss out

  310. on the

  311. God-centric

  312. attributes

  313. of himself.

  314. Like the prophet

  315. Isaiah,

  316. when he's given

  317. this vision

  318. of the Lord,

  319. he sees the Lord

  320. high and lifted up.

  321. His robe

  322. is filling

  323. the temple.

  324. There are seraphims

  325. that are flying around

  326. and are praising him.

  327. The temple

  328. is shaking

  329. and full of smoke.

  330. God doesn't even

  331. speak

  332. and Isaiah

  333. is undone.

  334. He sees

  335. his uncleanliness

  336. before God.

  337. He sees

  338. how he is

  339. here

  340. and God

  341. is so

  342. out there

  343. and he just

  344. loses it.

  345. We need that.

  346. We need to understand

  347. the power

  348. and the majesty

  349. of God.

  350. We need to grasp

  351. the holiness

  352. of God,

  353. his perfectness,

  354. his set-apartness.

  355. We need to

  356. understand

  357. how the wrath

  358. of God

  359. is situated

  360. towards sin.

  361. It can't be

  362. with sin.

  363. And so our view

  364. of him would be

  365. incomplete

  366. and weak

  367. without knowing

  368. those things.

  369. No,

  370. we need to see

  371. and we need to know

  372. God as he has

  373. revealed himself

  374. in scripture,

  375. awesome and majestic

  376. and terrifying

  377. at times

  378. because that's

  379. who he is,

  380. holy and separated

  381. and not like us.

  382. He is God

  383. and we are not.

  384. Moses says,

  385. do not fear

  386. for God

  387. has come to test you.

  388. Why?

  389. That the fear

  390. of God

  391. may be before you,

  392. that you may not sin.

  393. Having a proper

  394. fear of God

  395. will keep us

  396. from sin.

  397. Fear for the unbeliever?

  398. That looks a little

  399. different.

  400. That's fear

  401. of God's judgment.

  402. Knowing that you

  403. are not in the will

  404. of your creator.

  405. Jesus says this

  406. in Luke 12

    Luke 12:5

  407. verse 5,

  408. but I will warn you

  409. whom to fear.

  410. Fear him

  411. who,

  412. after he is killed,

  413. has authority

  414. to cast into hell.

  415. Yes,

  416. I tell you,

  417. fear him.

  418. Jesus is talking

  419. about,

  420. of course,

  421. God,

  422. the only one

  423. who can

  424. cast into hell.

  425. God.

  426. However,

  427. the fear

  428. for a believer

  429. is different.

  430. It's an awesome

  431. reverence

  432. for God.

  433. It's knowing

  434. who he is,

  435. knowing who we are,

  436. wanting to obey

  437. and honor him

  438. while having

  439. that full

  440. understanding

  441. of who he is

  442. and how he

  443. has condescended

  444. to us

  445. out of love

  446. to save us.

  447. Christian author

  448. and pastor

  449. Randy Alcorn

  450. says this,

  451. the fear of God

  452. is a profound

  453. respect of his holiness,

  454. which includes

  455. a fear

  456. of the consequences

  457. of disobeying him.

  458. It shouldn't scare us

  459. out of our wits,

  460. it should scare us

  461. into them.

  462. And that lines up

  463. with Proverbs 14,

    Proverbs 14:27

  464. verse 27,

  465. it says this,

  466. the fear of the Lord

  467. is a fountain

  468. of life

  469. turning a man

  470. from the snares

  471. of death.

  472. The fear

  473. of the Lord

  474. for a Christian

  475. helps to refocus us

  476. on God Almighty

  477. and not ourselves.

  478. It puts our lives

  479. and our sins

  480. and our thoughts

  481. in perspective

  482. before God.

  483. Noah obeyed God,

  484. he walked with God,

  485. but we read

  486. in Hebrews

  487. that he had

  488. a reverent fear

  489. of God.

  490. Joseph,

  491. after having

  492. a lifelong,

  493. a lifetime

  494. filled with fear,

  495. fear,

  496. this guy

  497. went through

  498. everything.

  499. He's the one

  500. that we would think

  501. would struggle

  502. with so many things,

  503. who would go

  504. off the rails,

  505. who would struggle

  506. with anger

  507. and resentment,

  508. even who,

  509. when tempted

  510. by a woman

  511. to sleep

  512. with her,

  513. you would think

  514. in his condition,

  515. in all that had

  516. been taken away

  517. from him,

  518. and how he would

  519. have thought

  520. I deserve

  521. a little bit

  522. of something

  523. good in my life,

  524. who's around me.

  525. He still fled,

  526. he still did

  527. what was right,

  528. he still followed

  529. after God

  530. through jail,

  531. through his family,

  532. through women,

  533. through all of it,

  534. from all that he was

  535. given and all that

  536. he was taken away.

  537. And in Genesis 42,

  538. it says that

  539. he feared God.

  540. It was his fear

  541. of God

  542. that kept him

  543. where he went.

  544. He didn't have

  545. the New Testament,

  546. he didn't have

  547. Jesus Christ

  548. or the gospel,

  549. he didn't have

  550. podcasts that would

  551. encourage him

  552. when life sucked,

  553. he had the fear

  554. of the Lord.

  555. And we see this fear

  556. also in the New Testament

  557. as we look at Acts 9,

    Acts 9:31

  558. verse 31.

  559. So the church

  560. throughout all Judea

  561. and Galilee

  562. and Samaria

  563. had peace

  564. and was being built up

  565. and walking

  566. in the fear

  567. of the Lord

  568. and in the comfort

  569. of the Holy Spirit,

  570. it multiplied,

  571. it being the church,

  572. the church multiplied

  573. as it walked

  574. in the fear

  575. of the Lord

  576. and the comfort

  577. of the Holy Spirit.

  578. There are many fears

  579. that we can struggle

  580. with in life.

  581. We can't list them all,

  582. it seems that they

  583. never end.

  584. But the big ones,

  585. the fear of man,

  586. the fear of death,

  587. the fear of losing control,

  588. the fear of failure,

  589. fear of losing

  590. my identity,

  591. all those we struggle

  592. with.

  593. But having a fear

  594. of God

  595. is most important.

  596. Because if we have

  597. the fear of God

  598. and we understand it

  599. and we ground

  600. ourselves in it,

  601. it will help keep

  602. all those other fears

  603. in their rightful place.

  604. Not governing our lives,

  605. not controlling our lives,

  606. but in a place

  607. of rightness

  608. before God,

  609. in a place of peace,

  610. knowing that you are

  611. in his will.

  612. And this fearful God

  613. is a God

  614. that loves you

  615. and protects you

  616. from those other fears

  617. that we struggle with.

  618. Let's move on

  619. to verse 21.

  620. So the people

  621. stood far off

  622. while Moses drew near

  623. to the thick darkness

  624. where Jesus was.

  625. It's helpful,

  626. I think,

  627. to observe

  628. in this passage

  629. that there isn't

  630. any judging

  631. going on

  632. towards the people,

  633. towards the Israelites,

  634. they may be slow

  635. to understand,

  636. they may not know

  637. exactly what's going on,

  638. but there is no blame

  639. that I see here

  640. towards them

  641. and how they

  642. were fearful

  643. and what they do

  644. with that.

  645. Even as they request

  646. not to hear

  647. directly from God,

  648. and we want to go back

  649. to Moses,

  650. you be our mediator.

  651. Even in that,

  652. we don't pick up

  653. anything

  654. in this passage

  655. that seems to say

  656. that they're wrong

  657. or to judge them

  658. for that.

  659. So Moses goes back

  660. to being the mediator now.

  661. And as this shift

  662. goes back,

  663. we look at the middle

  664. of verse 22.

  665. God's still not done speaking

  666. and so it's almost

  667. like a little blip

  668. and it keeps going.

  669. They saw God,

  670. God spoke to them,

  671. and now they're like,

  672. okay, Moses,

  673. you got this

  674. and we'll just listen

  675. directly to you.

  676. And so God continues.

  677. He says,

  678. you have seen for yourselves

  679. that I have talked

  680. with you from heaven.

  681. At first,

  682. this statement

  683. seems a little bit like,

  684. well, yeah,

  685. we know.

  686. But I think it's meant

  687. for more.

  688. It's meant to be

  689. a reminder to the people

  690. about what had just

  691. taken place,

  692. right?

  693. God had spoken

  694. to them.

  695. Their God

  696. had just come down

  697. from heaven

  698. and spoke directly

  699. to them.

  700. All of them.

  701. All together.

  702. Not different messages.

  703. They all experienced

  704. the same thing.

  705. Words

  706. to them

  707. from God.

  708. There's a couple things

  709. that I just want

  710. to unpack in that.

  711. First is,

  712. the people of Israel

  713. had a God

  714. that spoke to them.

  715. How loving

  716. and personal

  717. that is

  718. if we just

  719. think about that

  720. for a second.

  721. Their God,

  722. this is not new,

  723. their God

  724. is our God.

  725. One God,

  726. no other gods,

  727. he speaks

  728. to his people.

  729. What other religion

  730. that you know of

  731. has a God

  732. who speaks

  733. and cares

  734. for his people?

  735. Condescends

  736. from his

  737. throne,

  738. his mightiness

  739. and comes down

  740. to us

  741. and speaks

  742. to us

  743. that we might

  744. understand.

  745. God continues

  746. in verse,

  747. oh,

  748. I'm sorry,

  749. that was the one

  750. thing,

  751. the second thing

  752. that I wanted

  753. to bring out

  754. was that

  755. since God

  756. had spoken

  757. to them

  758. in the Ten

  759. Commandments

  760. and their response

  761. to that was like,

  762. that's too much.

  763. I want you

  764. to go through

  765. Moses

  766. and we'll

  767. listen to you.

  768. God wanted

  769. them

  770. to

  771. understand

  772. from that point,

  773. this is their

  774. agreement,

  775. every word

  776. that he gives

  777. to Moses

  778. and Moses

  779. portrays to them,

  780. he wants

  781. them to

  782. understand

  783. those words

  784. are from

  785. God.

  786. So though you

  787. may not hear

  788. from me directly

  789. now because you

  790. chose not to,

  791. that fear,

  792. that awesomeness,

  793. that reverence

  794. that you had

  795. for the Ten

  796. Commandments,

  797. when I continue

  798. to speak,

  799. I want you

  800. to understand

  801. that those

  802. are still

  803. my words.

  804. They'll come

  805. through Moses

  806. but it's

  807. the same thing.

  808. And I think

  809. it's important

  810. that they

  811. understood that.

  812. So God

  813. continues to

  814. speak in

  815. verse 23,

  816. you shall

  817. not make

  818. gods of

  819. silver to

  820. be with

  821. me,

  822. nor shall

  823. you make

  824. for yourselves

  825. gods of

  826. gold.

  827. God

  828. here giving

  829. them a

  830. reminder,

  831. a summary

  832. of the

  833. first two

  834. commandments

  835. if you

  836. remember.

  837. They

  838. are not

  839. to make

  840. gods to

  841. be with

  842. him and

  843. there is

  844. nothing

  845. that is

  846. to share

  847. that is

  848. to be on

  849. the same

  850. level as

  851. God.

  852. Instead

  853. of looking

  854. to things,

  855. whether they

  856. are things

  857. of this

  858. world or

  859. idols that

  860. we make,

  861. none of

  862. those things

  863. should replace

  864. God.

  865. None of

  866. those things

  867. should represent

  868. God or

  869. be worshipped

  870. like God.

  871. Instead

  872. here God

  873. is saying

  874. I want you

  875. to build

  876. an altar.

  877. At first

  878. this section

  879. seems a little

  880. odd coming

  881. from just

  882. after the

  883. Ten Commandments

  884. but what we

  885. see is a

  886. reminder of

  887. the priority

  888. of worship.

  889. God

  890. saying

  891. worship me

  892. first.

  893. Worship

  894. your God.

  895. We saw

  896. it in the

  897. Ten Commandments

  898. the order

  899. that they

  900. were given

  901. in and we

  902. see it

  903. here.

  904. Our

  905. worship of

  906. God,

  907. our relationship

  908. with God,

  909. that is

  910. paramount.

  911. That is

  912. first priority.

  913. That must

  914. come first.

  915. And then

  916. after that

  917. comes how

  918. we are

  919. to live

  920. and to

  921. relate

  922. to one

  923. another.

  924. And so

  925. those will

  926. be some

  927. laws that

  928. we'll get

  929. into in

  930. the next

  931. few weeks.

  932. Laws that

  933. were to

  934. govern how

  935. they were

  936. to relate

  937. to one

  938. another.

  939. But first

  940. and foremost

  941. it was

  942. their worship.

  943. It was

  944. their relationship

  945. to God.

  946. Do not

  947. make anything

  948. that will be

  949. placed on

  950. my level,

  951. God says.

  952. Nothing

  953. that will

  954. represent

  955. me.

  956. Instead,

  957. verse 24,

  958. an altar

  959. of earth

  960. you shall

  961. make for

  962. me and

  963. sacrifice

  964. on it

  965. your burnt

  966. offerings,

  967. your peace

  968. offerings,

  969. your sheep

  970. and your

  971. oxen.

  972. Now we

  973. know from

  974. other passages

  975. at this

  976. point in

  977. the Old

  978. Testament that

  979. sacrifices and

  980. offerings were

  981. already known.

  982. This wasn't a

  983. new thing.

  984. So Moses

  985. isn't giving

  986. them something

  987. they don't

  988. know about.

  989. There were

  990. sacrifices already

  991. made.

  992. There were burnt

  993. offerings that

  994. were given.

  995. But there

  996. were laws

  997. now.

  998. There were

  999. rules that

  1000. God wanted

  1001. to put in

  1002. place as

  1003. they

  1004. sacrificed.

  1005. Verse 25,

  1006. if you make

  1007. me an altar

  1008. of stone,

  1009. you shall

  1010. not build

  1011. it of

  1012. hewn stones,

  1013. for if you

  1014. wield your

  1015. tool on

  1016. it,

  1017. you profane

  1018. it.

  1019. They were

  1020. not to add

  1021. to what God

  1022. had created

  1023. and said

  1024. was good.

  1025. Even a

  1026. stone.

  1027. God created

  1028. a stone.

  1029. They were

  1030. not to

  1031. elevate their

  1032. craftsmanship

  1033. or the

  1034. altar they

  1035. created in

  1036. any way.

  1037. In any way

  1038. that might

  1039. elevate

  1040. themselves more

  1041. than what

  1042. they were.

  1043. By bringing

  1044. maybe a

  1045. higher level

  1046. of workmanship

  1047. or piety

  1048. or some

  1049. higher standing

  1050. before God,

  1051. they came

  1052. to God

  1053. just like

  1054. we come

  1055. to God

  1056. sinful

  1057. and there

  1058. is nothing

  1059. we can

  1060. add

  1061. to ourselves

  1062. or to

  1063. the altar

  1064. or in our

  1065. worship that

  1066. would change

  1067. that.

  1068. The altar

  1069. held the

  1070. sacrifice that

  1071. was given

  1072. to cover

  1073. their sins

  1074. and they

  1075. couldn't add

  1076. to that.

  1077. All they

  1078. could do

  1079. is come

  1080. and bring

  1081. it.

  1082. And we

  1083. see in

  1084. verse 26

  1085. another law

  1086. that God

  1087. adds on

  1088. to this

  1089. as well.

  1090. He says,

  1091. you shall

  1092. not go

  1093. up by

  1094. steps

  1095. to my

  1096. altar

  1097. that your

  1098. nakedness

  1099. be not

  1100. exposed

  1101. on it.

  1102. So after

  1103. Adam and

  1104. Eve sin

  1105. in the

  1106. garden,

  1107. the exposing

  1108. of one's

  1109. nakedness

  1110. is an

  1111. indication

  1112. of sin

  1113. and

  1114. shamefulness.

  1115. God

  1116. created

  1117. Adam and

  1118. Eve and

  1119. they did

  1120. not have

  1121. clothes on.

  1122. They saw

  1123. each other

  1124. before they

  1125. sinned and

  1126. they were

  1127. naked and

  1128. there was

  1129. no problem

  1130. with that.

  1131. But then

  1132. sin came

  1133. in.

  1134. Adam and

  1135. Eve sinned.

  1136. Adam and

  1137. Eve decided

  1138. to make

  1139. themselves like

  1140. God thinking

  1141. they were

  1142. being left

  1143. out and

  1144. so they

  1145. disobeyed

  1146. God and

  1147. that affected

  1148. the world.

  1149. It affected

  1150. their view

  1151. of themselves

  1152. and in

  1153. Genesis 3.10

  1154. when God

  1155. comes looking

  1156. for Adam

  1157. this is what

  1158. Adam said.

  1159. I heard

  1160. the sound

  1161. of you

  1162. in the

  1163. garden and

  1164. I was

  1165. afraid

  1166. because I

  1167. was naked

  1168. and I hid

  1169. myself.

  1170. That's the

  1171. same nakedness

  1172. that was

  1173. fine before

  1174. but now

  1175. there's shame

  1176. there's

  1177. sinfulness

  1178. in that

  1179. exposed

  1180. nakedness.

  1181. In

  1182. Genesis

  1183. 9 we

  1184. get this

  1185. brief story

  1186. if you

  1187. remember of

  1188. Noah

  1189. after the

  1190. flood

  1191. he gets

  1192. wasted

  1193. and he

  1194. finds himself

  1195. passed out

  1196. naked

  1197. on the

  1198. full ground

  1199. of his

  1200. tent.

  1201. One of

  1202. his

  1203. sons

  1204. Ham

  1205. shows up

  1206. and

  1207. we're not

  1208. given a lot

  1209. of details

  1210. but

  1211. it wasn't

  1212. properly

  1213. handled

  1214. when he

  1215. saw the

  1216. nakedness

  1217. of his

  1218. father

  1219. father.

  1220. But his

  1221. other two

  1222. brothers

  1223. Shem

  1224. and

  1225. Jaheth

  1226. when they

  1227. learned

  1228. of it

  1229. they got

  1230. a piece

  1231. of cloth

  1232. a robe

  1233. or a

  1234. blanket

  1235. and they

  1236. walk

  1237. backwards

  1238. into the

  1239. tent

  1240. and they

  1241. lay it

  1242. over their

  1243. father

  1244. and they

  1245. walk right

  1246. back out

  1247. because they

  1248. knew

  1249. it was

  1250. shameful

  1251. to look

  1252. at the

  1253. nakedness

  1254. of another

  1255. person

  1256. other than

  1257. their wife

  1258. that they

  1259. weren't allowed

  1260. to look

  1261. at.

  1262. And from

  1263. that we

  1264. see that

  1265. Ham is

  1266. cursed

  1267. and his

  1268. other two

  1269. brothers

  1270. are blessed.

  1271. There's

  1272. something

  1273. in that

  1274. nakedness

  1275. that was

  1276. it was

  1277. special

  1278. it was

  1279. forbidden

  1280. it was

  1281. handled

  1282. this rightly

  1283. because it

  1284. wasn't handled

  1285. rightly in the

  1286. beginning with

  1287. Adam and

  1288. Eve.

  1289. And so

  1290. for that

  1291. reason God

  1292. is saying

  1293. I do not

  1294. want you to

  1295. have steps

  1296. walking up

  1297. to my

  1298. altar

  1299. because when

  1300. you walk

  1301. up to my

  1302. altar

  1303. you're

  1304. under

  1305. parts

  1306. are

  1307. exposed

  1308. and so

  1309. you bring

  1310. shame

  1311. and sin

  1312. to this

  1313. holy place

  1314. of worship.

  1315. As we

  1316. think about

  1317. these

  1318. last few

  1319. verses

  1320. as we

  1321. think about

  1322. the altar

  1323. one thing

  1324. that stands

  1325. out in

  1326. these verses

  1327. is

  1328. the ownership

  1329. of the altar

  1330. verse 25

  1331. God says

  1332. if you make

  1333. me an altar

  1334. of stone

  1335. and then in

  1336. verse 26

  1337. you shall

  1338. not go up

  1339. to the steps

  1340. of my

  1341. altar

  1342. the altar

  1343. belonged to

  1344. the Lord

  1345. even though

  1346. man built

  1347. it

  1348. the sacrifices

  1349. the offerings

  1350. they belong

  1351. to the Lord

  1352. the reverence

  1353. given

  1354. was the Lord's

  1355. the forgiveness

  1356. that God gave

  1357. to them

  1358. belonged to

  1359. the Lord

  1360. and so

  1361. it's for those

  1362. reasons that

  1363. God had

  1364. requirements

  1365. on these

  1366. altars

  1367. in this

  1368. time of

  1369. worship

  1370. before him

  1371. so as we

  1372. think about

  1373. that

  1374. thinking about

  1375. the fact

  1376. that we

  1377. are

  1378. sinners

  1379. and that

  1380. we all

  1381. fall

  1382. short

  1383. of what

  1384. almighty

  1385. God

  1386. deserves

  1387. of

  1388. his

  1389. people

  1390. not only

  1391. do we fall

  1392. short

  1393. we saw the

  1394. Israelites fall

  1395. short

  1396. their sacrifice

  1397. falls short

  1398. our sacrifices

  1399. fall short

  1400. our worship

  1401. before God

  1402. falls short

  1403. but God

  1404. that's where

  1405. God

  1406. stepped in

  1407. that's where

  1408. God did not

  1409. leave us

  1410. that's where

  1411. God stepped

  1412. in with

  1413. his only

  1414. son

  1415. Jesus

  1416. who became

  1417. the last

  1418. and final

  1419. sacrifice

  1420. for our

  1421. sins

  1422. never again

  1423. we don't have

  1424. to go back

  1425. like the

  1426. people of

  1427. Israel

  1428. and make

  1429. sacrifices

  1430. all the

  1431. cleansing

  1432. all the

  1433. giving up

  1434. of animals

  1435. all the

  1436. blood

  1437. all that

  1438. goes away

  1439. why

  1440. because

  1441. Jesus

  1442. became

  1443. our

  1444. sacrifice

  1445. once

  1446. and forever

  1447. offered

  1448. to God

  1449. on our

  1450. behalf

  1451. he made

  1452. that sacrifice

  1453. for our

  1454. sins to be

  1455. covered

  1456. we have

  1457. to accept

  1458. that

  1459. gift

  1460. from Jesus

  1461. Christ

  1462. we have

  1463. to believe

  1464. if there's

  1465. no belief

  1466. in Jesus

  1467. Christ

  1468. that he

  1469. covers our

  1470. sins

  1471. with his

  1472. sacrifice

  1473. then we

  1474. can't be

  1475. covered

  1476. and the

  1477. wrath of

  1478. God

  1479. still remains

  1480. on our

  1481. sins

  1482. Hebrews

  1483. 12

  1484. 28 and

  1485. 29

  1486. I believe

  1487. captured this

  1488. idea of the

  1489. fear of God

  1490. in a very

  1491. helpful

  1492. way

  1493. let us

  1494. therefore

  1495. let us

  1496. be

  1497. grateful

  1498. for receiving

  1499. a kingdom

  1500. that cannot

  1501. be shaken

  1502. that kingdom

  1503. of God

  1504. for believers

  1505. that we

  1506. get to be

  1507. a part of

  1508. through our

  1509. belief in

  1510. Jesus Christ

  1511. that kingdom

  1512. is the kingdom

  1513. that cannot

  1514. be shaken

  1515. and thus

  1516. let us

  1517. offer to God

  1518. acceptable

  1519. worship

  1520. with reverence

  1521. and all

  1522. for our

  1523. God is a

  1524. consuming fire

  1525. that's the fear

  1526. the fear is

  1527. realizing who

  1528. God is

  1529. and yet

  1530. God still

  1531. loves us

  1532. and accepts

  1533. us

  1534. a right

  1535. fear of

  1536. God

  1537. will keep

  1538. us from

  1539. sin

  1540. not

  1541. perfection

  1542. but a

  1543. fear that

  1544. is healthy

  1545. and right

  1546. will cause

  1547. us to run

  1548. away from

  1549. sin

  1550. and run

  1551. back to

  1552. God

  1553. remembering

  1554. who he

  1555. is and

  1556. what he

  1557. did for

  1558. us

  1559. that will

  1560. keep us

  1561. grounded

  1562. in his

  1563. loving arms

  1564. that accept

  1565. us back

  1566. when we

  1567. make mistakes

  1568. and when we

  1569. sin and we

  1570. ask for

  1571. repentance

  1572. I want to

  1573. end with a

  1574. quote from

  1575. Charles Spurgeon

  1576. famous preacher

  1577. from the 1800s

  1578. he says this

  1579. blessed is the

  1580. man whose

  1581. heart is

  1582. filled with

  1583. that holy

  1584. fear which

  1585. inclines his

  1586. steps in the

  1587. way of God's

  1588. commandments

  1589. inclines his

  1590. heart to seek

  1591. after God

  1592. and inclines

  1593. his whole soul

  1594. to enter into

  1595. fellowship

  1596. with God

  1597. that he

  1598. may be

  1599. acquainted

  1600. with him

  1601. and be at

  1602. peace

  1603. let's pray

  1604. Lord we

  1605. pray that you

  1606. would continue

  1607. today and

  1608. every day

  1609. remind us of

  1610. who you are

  1611. help us to

  1612. get an

  1613. accurate and

  1614. a real

  1615. grasp on

  1616. having a

  1617. right fear

  1618. of you

  1619. to keep

  1620. us from

  1621. sin

  1622. to keep

  1623. us from

  1624. ourselves

  1625. help us

  1626. in our

  1627. struggles

  1628. help us

  1629. in our

  1630. temptations

  1631. and sin

  1632. help us

  1633. to look

  1634. to you

  1635. God thank

  1636. you for

  1637. your love

  1638. and your

  1639. mercy and

  1640. your grace

  1641. and your

  1642. salvation

  1643. that we

  1644. could never

  1645. do for

  1646. ourselves

  1647. you did

  1648. for us

  1649. Lord we

  1650. thank you

  1651. for those

  1652. things

  1653. and we

  1654. want to

  1655. live for

  1656. you

  1657. glorify you

  1658. in all that

  1659. we do

  1660. and in your

  1661. name

  1662. amen

  1663. too

  1664. i

  1665. we

  1666. we

  1667. my

  1668. we

  1669. have

  1670. to

  1671. run

  1672. our
