  1. Luke. We spent five years in Luke.

  2. That's over. Book of Ruth. Book of Ruth,

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  3. chapter 1.

  4. I'm going to read I I'm assuming a

  5. familiarity with this wonderful book.

  6. It's one of my favorite books in the

  7. Bible. I love teaching it verse by

  8. verse. But this morning,

  9. this morning, we're just going to camp

  10. out here for a little bit. uh and I and

  11. use it for our purposes today not as a

  12. book study but focusing on one point

  13. but let's remind oursel of it Ruth

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  14. chapter 1 verse one now can came to pass

  15. in the days when the judges rule that

  16. there was a famine in the land and a

  17. certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to

  18. sojourn in the country of Moab he and

  19. his wife and his two sons

  20. Now, Bethlehem is northeast of the Red

  21. Sea, and Moab is, no, excuse me.

  22. Bethlehem is northwest of the Red Sea.

  23. And Moab is southeast of the

  24. >> Dead Sea. See, I'm still doing it. Okay,

  25. I better go home and go to bed and then

  26. come back.

  27. Okay. Bethlehem is northwest of the Dead

  28. Sea or the Salt Sea and Moab is

  29. southeast of the Dead Sea or the Salt

  30. Sea. It's kind of an important

  31. geographical thing. Probably this trip

  32. from Moab, I'm guessing it uh is

  33. probably about 60 miles.

  34. Like to walk to Columbus.

  35. Just think about that.

  36. Been to Columbus a lot of times. I've

  37. never walked, nor do I ever expect it.

  38. But now it came to pass in the days when

  39. the judges ruled, there was a famine in

  40. the land, and a certain man of Bethlehem

  41. Judah went to sojourn in the country of

  42. Moab. He and his wife and his two sons.

  43. Sojourn is the key word. They didn't

  44. plan to stay there forever. They just

  45. planned to be there for a while. Like

  46. some of you snowbirds go to Florida for

  47. a win. They just plan to stay there for

  48. a while because of the famine that was

  49. in the land. And then they plan to come

  50. back.

  51. And notice

  52. this starts in Bethlehem,

  53. the city that's going to later become

  54. the birthplace of Jesus

  55. and the birthplace before Jesus of

  56. David.

  57. This is very important.

  58. David was born in Bethlehem. Uh, and

  59. Jesus was born in Bethlehem. And there's

  60. Bible things that are connecting here.

  61. Wonderfully connecting.

  62. And so

  63. anyway, the name of the man was IMC and

  64. the name of his wife was Na Naomi and

  65. the name of his two sons, Mahalan and

  66. Chilion, Ephrothites of Bethlehem,

  67. Judah. And they came into the country of

  68. Moab and continued there. And Alimc, and

  69. I'll give you his name. Even if you

  70. don't know Hebrew, you got ought to be

  71. able to get a little this. Melik is

  72. king. Elim is my my king. The Lord is my

  73. king.

  74. So the Lord is my king. God is my king

  75. is his name.

  76. Limchc and Naomi's husband died and she

  77. was left and her two sons.

  78. Nobody expected that.

  79. Things happen that you don't expect.

  80. You didn't plan on that.

  81. They planned to sojourn in Moab, not die

  82. in Moab.

  83. So all three men died,

  84. father

  85. and the two sons.

  86. And the sons, they actually stayed

  87. longer than they expected. The sons grew

  88. up and got married, but then they died

  89. before they could have offspring.

  90. And so it says in verse four, they took

  91. unto themselves wives of the women of

  92. Moab. The name of the one was Orpa and

  93. the name of the other Ruth. And they

  94. dwelt there 10 years. So the serjourn

  95. last about 10 years. In those 10 years,

  96. Imc died and both his sons died. You got

  97. three women, three widows left. The

  98. son's widow and Imc's wid.

  99. And Milan and Chelon died also. Both of

  100. them. And the women were bereft of her.

  101. The woman was bereft of her two sons and

  102. her husband.

  103. And she arose

  104. with her daughtersin-law that she might

  105. return from the country of Moab,

  106. for she heard in the country of Moab how

  107. the Lord visited his people in giving

  108. them food.

  109. Famine was over.

  110. Remember, it's an agricultural economy.

  111. Wherefore she went forth out of the

  112. place where she was, and her two

  113. daughters-in-law with her, and they went

  114. on the way to return unto the land of

  115. Judah. Three women started the trip

  116. back. All widows.

  117. And Naomi said to her two

  118. daughters-in-law, "Go return each to her

  119. mother's house. The Lord deal kindly

  120. with you as you've dealt with the dead

  121. and with me. The Lord grant that you may

  122. find rest. That means you might get

  123. married. Each of you in the house of her

  124. husband. Then she kissed them and they

  125. lifted up their voice and wept. And

  126. they, that's both of them, said to her,

  127. "Surely we'll return with thee unto your

  128. people." What an impression Naomi must

  129. have made

  130. to these daughters.

  131. They're ready. These girls are talking

  132. about leaving their country. to go with

  133. her to Bethlehem, leaving their family

  134. and spending time the rest of their

  135. lives with her. And Naomi said, "Turn

  136. again, my daughters. Will you go with

  137. me? Are there yet any more sons in my

  138. womb that they may be your husbands?"

  139. Naomi been thinking about that as they

  140. started as they're on their journey.

  141. Wait a minute.

  142. There's nobody. No one's going to marry

  143. Moabitete. Remember,

  144. there's a history between the Moabites

  145. and the Jewish people.

  146. Movites didn't have a very good

  147. reputation.

  148. Turn again, my daughters, go your way,

  149. for I'm too old to have a husband. And

  150. if I should say I have hope, if I should

  151. have a husband and also tonight and

  152. would bear sons, that's a hypothetical.

  153. Would you tar for them till they're

  154. grown? Would you refrain from marrying?

  155. Nay, my daughters, for it grieves me

  156. much for your sakes that the hand of the

  157. Lord is gone out against me. I I applaud

  158. her honesty. Don't you?

  159. She didn't want to manipulate these

  160. people for her sake to have them with

  161. her and getting these younger people

  162. into a situation maybe they hadn't

  163. thought through. Plot or honesty. May

  164. God give us that kind of honesty.

  165. And they lifted up their voice and wept

  166. again. And Orpa kissed her

  167. mother-in-law. She kissed her goodbye.

  168. She did what she told her to do.

  169. Or kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth

  170. clung to her.

  171. Now Paul's action and Ruth's action are

  172. contrasted just like later Boaz's action

  173. and such a one's action are contrasted.

  174. Such a one and Orpa weren't going to pay

  175. the price.

  176. Boaz and Ruth did.

  177. They became the ancestors of David

  178. and the ancestors of Jesus.

  179. What an amazing story this is. Whole

  180. Bible's about Jesus. Remember that.

  181. We're talking about events that happened

  182. 3,000 years ago

  183. in the Bible. Thousand years before

  184. Jesus was born in 2,000 more years per

  185. month.

  186. Regular people

  187. making hard decisions.

  188. History has changed.

  189. None of us know how much our decisions

  190. are going to affect later people.

  191. We don't. We have no way of knowing. We

  192. make our decisions. Life doesn't tell us

  193. the future.

  194. But those decisions affect not just us,

  195. not just the people around us,

  196. people later than us.

  197. And so here's what happened

  198. in verse 15. And she said, "Behold, thy

  199. sister-in-law is gone back to her people

  200. and unto her gods."

  201. Naomi knew what was, excuse me, uh Naomi

  202. knew what was behind these decisions.

  203. You go back to Moab, you're going to go

  204. back to Moabitete gods, gods, and

  205. Moabitete idolatry and Moabitete

  206. immorality.

  207. return after your sister-in-law.

  208. Now, she was testing her.

  209. She was laying out all the facts.

  210. Ruth said,

  211. "Entreat me not to leave you or turn

  212. away from following after you. For where

  213. you go, I will go. Where you lodge, I

  214. will lodge. Your people will be my

  215. people, and your God,

  216. my God.

  217. Where you die, I'll die.

  218. I'm not even going back after you die.

  219. I'm burning the bridges.

  220. Where you die, I'll die. And there will

  221. I be buried. The Lord do so to me. and

  222. also if anything but death part thee and

  223. me.

  224. When she saw that she steadfastly

  225. determined to go with her, then she

  226. ceased speaking to her and will stop it.

  227. Father, help me to speak each of us to

  228. hear your word today in Jesus name.

  229. Amen.

  230. There was a Baptist pastor on our board

  231. at GMSA. I told you about him. He's a

  232. friend of mine. He's with the Lord now.

  233. But he used to carry around little cards

  234. and he would pass them out to people. I

  235. told you about it a couple of weeks ago.

  236. And on that card it said, "Life is

  237. choices. Make good choices." That's all

  238. it said.

  239. Life is choices. Make good choices.

  240. I've never forgotten that.

  241. And it's always been something that I've

  242. carried with me since he taught us on

  243. that particular subject. And so I'm

  244. going to not teach his message. I can't

  245. remember his message. I got my own now.

  246. But life is choices. What life is

  247. choices. Your life, my life, choices. We

  248. can't avoid choices.

  249. Make good choices.

  250. And all of us here, every one of us here

  251. have made some bad choices. Anybody here

  252. not made bad choices?

  253. And all of us here probably made some

  254. good choices.

  255. And if I said to you, give me five of

  256. your worst choices. Give me five of your

  257. best choices.

  258. Write them on a paper and hand them in.

  259. I'm not going to do that. I'm just

  260. saying. I'm sure you could reflect and

  261. you'd be painful

  262. for the bad choices and you'd be very

  263. thankful for the good choices realizing

  264. a secret hand was guiding you and not

  265. just yourself.

  266. Uh, now life is not a poker game

  267. where you can throw away the bad cards

  268. and ask for a couple more.

  269. I'll take three.

  270. Life is not a poker game where you can

  271. choose how many cards you can keep or

  272. discard. life is is um

  273. um

  274. is different than that. We make our

  275. choices and then our choices make us

  276. and we can't decide what hand we're hand

  277. we're dealt.

  278. And knife isn't an ice cream store.

  279. One of the things I've enjoyed about

  280. going to Tim's church in Guachu,

  281. Argentina, they got the best ice cream.

  282. Just the very best ice cream. And every

  283. time I do that, I tell them, I really

  284. want to be generous to you while I'm

  285. here. You and your kids. I want to take

  286. you all to the ice cream store. And I

  287. say that because I want to

  288. one of those things, 30 choices,

  289. but they're all good. They don't have

  290. any bad choices.

  291. They're bad choices in the ice, but

  292. there's bad choices in life

  293. and some of them are disguised as good

  294. choices.

  295. That's what makes choice choosing so

  296. such a so much of a a struggle.

  297. And so may God help us to grasp this

  298. very very thing.

  299. Now, thankful we don't make our choices

  300. in a vacuum.

  301. Thankful that God is over everything,

  302. our good choices AND BAD CHOICES. ALL

  303. THINGS work together for good to those

  304. that love God and are called according

  305. to his purpose, even the bad choices.

  306. That's not an excuse for making bad

  307. choices,

  308. but it is relief, isn't it?

  309. So very important to grasp

  310. that very thing.

  311. Life is choices.

  312. Make good choices

  313. because bad choices always have

  314. consequences

  315. that we don't

  316. we don't like.

  317. John Swain is talks about eating at the

  318. table of consequences. Well, we've all

  319. had that meal.

  320. It's not pleasant

  321. when we made bad choices.

  322. But choices must be made. Every one of

  323. you have choices you can't avoid.

  324. Some of them you can put off. Sooner or

  325. later, can't put this off anymore.

  326. And so choices must must be made.

  327. Back in the 1960s when I was in college,

  328. there was a very popular liberal guy.

  329. I'm I'm not I have no sympathy for some

  330. of his positions at all. His name was

  331. Harvey Cox,

  332. very popular. And he had a poster and

  333. people put it up. I even put it up when

  334. I was in my insanity years.

  335. Not to decide is to decide.

  336. But that's true. Even though, you know,

  337. his particular view of life is

  338. completely different to mine. Even not

  339. to decide is to decide.

  340. If we decide to put decisions off,

  341. that's a decision.

  342. So,

  343. wow.

  344. Jesus said in Matthew 12:30, "He who's

    Matthew 12:30

  345. not with me is against me."

  346. What?

  347. When did I make a decision to be against

  348. you? When you made your decision not to

  349. be with me.

  350. These are awesome thoughts.

  351. In the book of Hebrews 11 verse 25, it

    Hebrews 11:25

  352. talks about Moses. He refused to be

  353. called the son of Pharaoh's daughter,

  354. choosing

  355. rather to share affliction with the

  356. people of God than enjoy the pleasures

  357. of sin for a season. What a choice that

  358. was.

  359. turned his back on the pleasures and the

  360. position and the power of being

  361. Pharaoh's adopted son

  362. to affiliate himself with two million

  363. slaves.

  364. How about this? And Joshua in the book

  365. of Joshua 24:15,

    Joshua 24:15

  366. Joshua said at the end of his life, "And

  367. if you be unwilling to serve the Lord,

  368. choose you this day whom you'll serve.

  369. Choose you this day whom you I'm not

  370. going to be here. You got to make a

  371. choice from after I'm gone." Don't our

  372. kids need to do that after they're out

  373. of the home?

  374. Don't people have to do that after

  375. they're under our care? Maybe in the

  376. church, they're moved somewhere else,

  377. went along while they were here, but

  378. then they decide, "No, I'm going the

  379. other way." Choose you this day whom you

  380. will serve,

  381. whether the gods your father served in

  382. the regions beyond the river, or the

  383. gods of the Amorites in whom the land

  384. you dwell. But as for me in my house,

  385. we'll serve the Lord.

  386. So

  387. they Moses laid it out. He had two

  388. choices.

  389. Be an Egyptian,

  390. adopt an Egyptian, be wealthy and famous

  391. and pleasure and have all the pleasures

  392. or be with the slaves. The Jewish nation

  393. with Joshua had three choices which

  394. really come down to two. You can do the

  395. idolatry in the land or the idolatry

  396. around the land. Those are two different

  397. choices, but they're really one. You're

  398. going to be an idoltor.

  399. Or you can serve the Lord. And you know,

  400. life is down to two choices on that.

  401. Your religion is either the religion of

  402. Cain or Abel. It's just that simple.

  403. Your your religion is either the re

  404. religion of revelation or redemption.

  405. That's the religion of Abel. a religion

  406. of rebellion and recklessness. That's

  407. the religion of Cain.

  408. Every religion goes under one box or the

  409. other.

  410. All its variations.

  411. Everyone has choices.

  412. I I love the book of Proverbs. I love

  413. teaching the book of Proverbs.

  414. Um,

  415. if you're new to Christianity and you've

  416. never really studied Proverbs, you you

  417. and you do it for the first time, you'll

  418. notice the first eight chapters are the

  419. introduction. They're different. And

  420. then all of a sudden, you get into the

  421. individual proverb.

  422. But in the introduction, a father is

  423. teaching his son and warning him and

  424. exhorting him. There's two choices in

  425. life. Lady folly, lady wisdom.

  426. There's two parties. You can go to the

  427. party of Lady Folly

  428. the prostitute or you can go to Lady

  429. Wisdom who is Jesus Christ

  430. because Lady Wisdom is Christ. He's the

  431. wisdom of God.

  432. And they come and before he gets around

  433. the individual decisions and individual

  434. observations about life with the

  435. different proverbs, he gets to this big

  436. thing right here. The big thing behind

  437. all the other things,

  438. either Lady Father or Lady Christ or

  439. Lady Wisdom,

  440. that those two decisions, one or the

  441. other, makes the difference between

  442. everything else in your whole life.

  443. And uh may God help us as we think about

  444. Ruth and her decision.

  445. Naomi and her decision.

  446. We think about that whole book of Ruth,

  447. but maybe we think about all the other

  448. decisions made book in the Bible. You

  449. can go through the Bible. People come to

  450. the decision

  451. come to the fork in the road.

  452. Um,

  453. Genesis 13

    Genesis 13:9–11

  454. verse 9 to 11.

  455. I'd like you to turn there with me,

  456. please.

  457. Here's a man. The Bible says he was a

  458. righteous man, but as a righteous man,

  459. he had a very made a very unrighteous

  460. decision.

  461. In Genesis 13,

  462. his name was Lot. His

  463. name was Lot.

  464. Genesis 13:9.

    Genesis 13:9

  465. Remember, he was the nephew of Abraham.

  466. Abraham realized there was conflict

  467. between Lot's herdsmen and his herdsmen.

  468. And he says in verse eight, "Let there

  469. be no strife. We got to stop this. It's

  470. not right for our workers to fight with

  471. each other and be squabbling with each

  472. other." He says in verse 9, "Is not the

  473. whole land before you? Separate

  474. yourself, I pray you, from me. If you

  475. will take the left hand, I'll go to the

  476. right. And if you depart to the right

  477. hand, I'll go to the left. Abraham,

  478. who was the main guy, thought was the

  479. tagalong that Abraham gave him first

  480. choice.

  481. Now, you know what happened in my home?

  482. If the parents had a pie and there's

  483. four kids and they cut the pie, I would

  484. and they gave me first choice, I was

  485. looking at the biggest piece.

  486. I'll take that.

  487. And that's exactly what Lot did. He

  488. looked at what? He looked at the outward

  489. geography

  490. instead of the moral and religious and

  491. spiritual condition of the peoples.

  492. And it says in verse 10, Lot lifted up

  493. his eyes and beheld all the plain of

  494. Jordan. It was well watered everywhere

  495. before the Lord destroyed Sodom and

  496. Gomorrah, even as the garden of the

  497. Lord. like the land of Egypt has to come

  498. into.

  499. Now listen, I've been to that place.

  500. It's no garden now. It's a desert. It's

  501. terrible.

  502. It's desolate.

  503. Boy, it was good in Lot's day.

  504. Till God rained fire down from heaven

  505. and brimstone and erect the

  506. And chose him. He chose He chose him all

  507. the plain of the Jordan. And he should

  508. have said, "No, Abraham, you're the main

  509. guy. You get first choice." He He jumped

  510. the gun.

  511. But worse than that,

  512. thought he got the best deal and he got

  513. the worst.

  514. He chose him. All the plain of the

  515. Jordan had lot journeyed east and they

  516. separated themselves from one another.

  517. Lost him his family.

  518. had choice

  519. lost him his wife.

  520. Although his daughters survived, you

  521. remember what happened to them

  522. that brought about the Moabites and the

  523. Ammonites

  524. and caused trouble all the rest down

  525. through history.

  526. But Lot made his choice. It was a

  527. selfish choice. It was a careless

  528. choice. It was a biblically un

  529. uh wise choice.

  530. And Abraham dwelt in the land of Canaan,

  531. and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain

  532. and pitched his tent towards Sodom. But

  533. the men of Sodom were wicked sinners

  534. before the Lord exceeded. He didn't move

  535. to Sodom right away. That was

  536. incremental. And that you know when we

  537. make bad choices it always goes downhill

  538. but not right away.

  539. So what a bad choice he made for his

  540. wife, for his family and in every way.

  541. Now God was merciful to him and God

  542. rescued him and Abraham had to go to war

  543. to rescue him

  544. and did

  545. But there were consequences.

  546. So our our choices affect others around

  547. us and after us.

  548. Life is choices. Make good choices. Turn

  549. with me to Philippians real quick.

  550. Philippians chapter

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  551. 1.

  552. This is a real

  553. This is hard to preach on here. this

  554. particular section.

  555. Paul's in prison. He's on trial for his

  556. life.

  557. He doesn't know if they're going to

  558. execute you. Execute him or let him go.

  559. It's one or the other. They didn't put

  560. you in prison for 30 years or 10 years

  561. or five years. Prison meant you're going

  562. on trial for your life in the Roman

  563. Empire. You either get out

  564. or you get executed.

  565. And Paul's in Rome. He's writing the

  566. Philippians in Greece. And he says in

  567. chapter 1 verse um

  568. 21, "For to me to live as Christ, to die

  569. is gain. But if I live in the flesh,

  570. this is the fruit of my labor. Yet what

  571. I'll choose, I don't know.

  572. Who is he to place to choose?" He had no

  573. choice.

  574. God was either going to get him out,

  575. have him executed.

  576. What? What does that mean?

  577. It means exactly what an old farmer

  578. woman said to me almost 50 years ago

  579. when she was dying of cancer.

  580. She found out she had cancer in the

  581. hospital. You've heard me tell about her

  582. before.

  583. The doctor told her she had cancer.

  584. Never forget this. It was in Aonis

  585. Hospital.

  586. A godly woman.

  587. God's will

  588. will.

  589. That was Paul's attitude.

  590. I'm choosing what God chooses for me.

  591. God's will

  592. is my will. And Paul was at a place he

  593. didn't know what God's will was. So, he

  594. was weighing, is God going to get me out

  595. of this? Is God going to not get me out

  596. of this? Am I going to die? Am I going

  597. to They're going to execute me and chop

  598. my head off. They did do that, but not

  599. this time. later on,

  600. few years later,

  601. but he says in verse 21, "For me to live

  602. as Christ and to die as gain, yet if I

  603. live in the flesh, this is the fruit of

  604. my labor. Yet what I shall choose, I

  605. know not." What did he mean? Whatever

  606. God does, I'm choosing that.

  607. Would you choose to have cancer? Would

  608. you choose to die young?

  609. Would you choose to go to prison?

  610. Probably not. But if you can't stop it

  611. and you get cancer and you know you're

  612. going to die or you're going to get

  613. arrested and you know you're going to

  614. prison, you say, "Well, God, I wouldn't

  615. have chosen this, but your will is my

  616. will."

  617. That's what he's doing. That's part of

  618. good choices. And that doesn't mean you

  619. can't pray to be healed. Doesn't mean

  620. you can't

  621. try to get out of your situation. But it

  622. does mean when you can't, when it's one

  623. way or the other, you just bend to God's

  624. will,

  625. trusting he knows better than you know.

  626. And if my life does if my death does

  627. more for the Lord than my life, then I'm

  628. ready to go today.

  629. If I can do more for my family and my

  630. church by being gone earlier than I

  631. hope,

  632. I want to hang around.

  633. So that's what Paul's doing. Now he he

  634. says in verse 23, I'm in a straight

  635. between the two. I'd go either way here,

  636. but I desire and depart with Christ as

  637. far better. I've already been to heaven.

  638. I was caught up to the third heaven. I

  639. know what's coming. I I can't wait to

  640. get there personally. He said, "But to

  641. abide in the flesh is more needful for

  642. you.

  643. And so if I can stay down here a little

  644. longer, live a little longer, and do

  645. something good for you, then I'm willing

  646. to.

  647. We always talk about when people die,

  648. they miss this and they miss that. And

  649. we never talk about what we're missing

  650. by not being there.

  651. So anyway, he says, "Having this

  652. confidence, I know I'll abide and

  653. continue with you all in your

  654. furtherance of faith and joy and so

  655. forth and so on." So Paul had the

  656. choices. He brought them before the

  657. Lord.

  658. Turn back to Proverbs with me. And I

  659. this might end up being two messages.

  660. I'm thinking I'm not going to make it

  661. all the way where I want to be. But turn

  662. with me to Proverbs.

  663. You see what happens when we skip a

  664. Sunday?

  665. Have you noticed what happens?

  666. I got more time to think about what I'm

  667. going to preach and sermons get longer.

  668. No, I'm going to try to keep on time.

  669. But anyway, Proverbs 3:31,

    Proverbs 3:31

  670. I mean 333.

  671. I can't tell you how

  672. much this particular verse has meant to

  673. me.

  674. He use it a lot as a pastor

  675. counseling people when they come have

  676. choices.

  677. We're not the only actors in our life.

  678. Our

  679. choices

  680. have consequences because there's a God

  681. in heaven

  682. who's holy,

  683. who knows everything.

  684. And thank God he delivers us from the

  685. often from the consequ all the

  686. consequences of some of our stupid

  687. choices. I'm thankful for that because

  688. I've had to been delivered from a lot of

  689. them in my life.

  690. And notice verse 33 of chapter 3.

  691. Father to a son, the curse of the Lord

  692. is in the house of the weak.

  693. But he blesses

  694. the habitation

  695. of the just.

  696. That doesn't mean the wicked always have

  697. it all bad. Doesn't mean the righteous

  698. have it all good.

  699. But there's no neutral.

  700. Every home is blessed or cursed.

  701. There's no neutral.

  702. Every life is either under the judgment

  703. of God, the wrath of God, the anger of

  704. God, or the mercy of God, and the

  705. goodness of God and the grace of God.

  706. We've all failed. We've all been wicked.

  707. So we deserve nothing but the curse.

  708. But there is blessing even if we've been

  709. in in the one. We can by God's grace be

  710. moved to the other.

  711. We don't have to stay on that marriage

  712. ground.

  713. And so what a powerful

  714. warning. What a powerful section of holy

  715. scripture.

  716. Proverbs 8 verse 10.

    Proverbs 8:10

  717. Receive my instruction and not silver

  718. knowledge rather than choice gold. For

  719. wisdom is better than rubies.

  720. Do we believe that

  721. wisdom is better than spiritual wisdom

  722. is better than rubies

  723. and all things that may be desired are

  724. not to be compared with it. If God gives

  725. you wisdom on how to live for him and

  726. how to live with others, that's better

  727. than rubies. Now, I wouldn't mind a few

  728. rubies.

  729. That's not the point.

  730. But there are many people have inverted

  731. par uh have inverted priorities.

  732. I've said this so many times from this

  733. pulpit, but I'm going to say it again.

  734. John Swain and I John's not even here

  735. this morning. He must not be feeling

  736. well, but u we went to South Africa on a

  737. mission trip.

  738. We're driving through

  739. uh

  740. I think Joeberg or wherever we were and

  741. I was shocked just like in southeast

  742. Ohio we have those piles of coal coal

  743. dust from the mines that are piled up

  744. sometimes you can see them. They had a

  745. pile of that came from the gold mines

  746. that was twice as high as this church

  747. and just as big.

  748. There were Europeans that came to

  749. Africa.

  750. Was that wrong? Maybe not. It wasn't the

  751. best.

  752. And some of them were professing

  753. Christians. And I no doubt some of them

  754. were real Christians. But the problem

  755. was to the Africans, they were all

  756. Christians. And

  757. as John and I saw in a museum there in

  758. South Africa dealing with apartheid,

  759. this mo motto on the side before the

  760. white man came, we had land and he had

  761. the Bible. Now we got the Bible and he's

  762. got the land.

  763. All I can say is shame on people that

  764. think gold is more important than

  765. people.

  766. People are precious. God himself died

  767. for people.

  768. People are precious.

  769. Red and yellow, black and white, they

  770. all precious in his sight.

  771. Are they precious in our sight?

  772. We want to give to missionaries. Do we

  773. want to give our lives? We want to visit

  774. missionaries and we want to make a we

  775. want to focus on other people.

  776. Souls are precious. Jesus died for

  777. souls.

  778. What are our priorities? Our our choices

  779. show our priorities.

  780. Turn to Proverbs 16

  781. about this priority. Proverbs 16:16.

    Proverbs 16:16

  782. how much better it is to get wisdom than

  783. gold.

  784. Do we believe that?

  785. I'm not talking the kind of wisdom you

  786. can get in universities necessarily or

  787. PhDs, although that might be involved in

  788. some of it. I'm talking about practical

  789. wisdom knowing how to live.

  790. And there's many people who've never

  791. gone to university. They got more

  792. practical wisdom than people who got a

  793. whole bunch of alphabets after. They got

  794. all the letters of the alphabet. They're

  795. the alphabet people.

  796. How much better to get wisdom than gold

  797. and to get understanding is to be chosen

  798. than silver.

  799. It's it's a choice. I choose

  800. to learn the word of God. I choose to

  801. know more about Jesus Christ. I choose

  802. to have biblical wisdom to be wise to

  803. salvation is the New Testament.

  804. I make that choice. I'm going to pay

  805. that price.

  806. I'm going to spend time alone learning

  807. the Bible,

  808. learning the truths of the Bible.

  809. Even though I'm going to feel like a

  810. fool when I start, I'm going to be

  811. embarrassed at how much I don't know.

  812. I'm going to struggle through it. I make

  813. a choice

  814. is to be chosen rather than silver.

  815. And what's that mean? It means sometimes

  816. you might take a promotion or sometime

  817. in your job, sometimes you might refuse

  818. the promotion that everybody else thinks

  819. you ought to take. Oh, I'll make three

  820. times the money. I have so much less

  821. time.

  822. I don't have time to read the Bible. I

  823. won't have time to serve the Lord. I

  824. won't time to minister to people.

  825. But I have a lot of money.

  826. It's not wrong to make money. It's not

  827. wrong to make more money. Sometimes you

  828. need to take the promotion. It's a

  829. legitimate thing. I'm not I'm just

  830. simply saying there's choices. Make good

  831. choices. How much better is it to get

  832. wisdom than gold and to get

  833. understanding is rather to be chosen

  834. than silver. Proverbs 22.

  835. Proverbs 22 verse one. Remember

  836. Pilgrim's Progress and Mr. Facing both

  837. ways? He just couldn't. That guy

  838. couldn't get committed, could he?

  839. In Proverbs 22:1, a good name is rather

    Proverbs 22:1

  840. to be chosen than great riches. How many

  841. have sacrificed the reputation

  842. to get rich?

  843. Now, if you can get rich without

  844. sacrificing your reputation, I say go

  845. for it. That's okay.

  846. The good name is rather to be chosen

  847. than great riches and loving favor

  848. rather than silver and gold. Now, that

  849. loving favor deals with God's blessing

  850. on you.

  851. So,

  852. ask Adam and Eve if making choices

  853. matters or not.

  854. Ask Noah

  855. if choices matter or not.

  856. Ask the Apostle Paul in Acts 28 when

  857. he's preaching the gospel to the Jewish

  858. people in Rome and it says, "Some

  859. believed and some believe not."

  860. Some believe and some believe not.

  861. Now, all that brings us back to Ruth.

  862. This was a critical moment

  863. in Naomi's life. She made a choice to

  864. return to Bethlehem with all the

  865. humiliation that that was going to bring

  866. her because she had nothing to show for

  867. 10 years except loss.

  868. And if you go to your high school

  869. reunion, your 20th reunion, your 10th

  870. reunion,

  871. you kind of hope that you can't go there

  872. and be embarrassed about your life.

  873. And think about Naomi going home, a

  874. little town.

  875. Everybody knew they left. Everybody knew

  876. why.

  877. And when she comes back,

  878. she has less than when she left. And

  879. she's got the face back.

  880. Was it was God God's providence just

  881. squeezed her till she had nothing. It

  882. was like the choice wasn't a choice. She

  883. stays there. She's going to die.

  884. Somebody people would rather die than be

  885. embarrassed,

  886. be humiliated.

  887. But this was this is amazing. This the

  888. what's going on in the book of Ruth. If

  889. you'll come back quickly and I guess

  890. I'll just deal with the rest of this

  891. when we get back.

  892. Would you come back with me in the book

  893. of Ruth?

  894. I'm assuming a familiarity

  895. with this book.

  896. my God as king made a choice and all us

  897. husbands and fathers need to realize my

  898. choices affect my wife and my family and

  899. just myself.

  900. Was it a good decision? Was it a bad

  901. decision?

  902. Was it a legitimate decision or a sinful

  903. decision? Bible doesn't say

  904. explicitly.

  905. I think there's fair questions to be

  906. asked right here.

  907. Um, it was successful in that they

  908. escaped the famine in Bethlehem.

  909. He got his family out of the famine

  910. situation.

  911. Why didn't he go north in the promised

  912. land like Joseph did when he went to

  913. Nazareth?

  914. Although Joseph was from Bethlehem

  915. thousand years later

  916. and why did he go to Moab of all places

  917. but he did especially if you know the

  918. history when Moses brought him out of

  919. Egypt the Moabitete women seduced the

  920. men got everybody in trouble a lot of

  921. people died

  922. didn't sound like a good place to raise

  923. Now, when when um

  924. we'll see this next week when we

  925. continue this sermon, but when Naomi got

  926. back to Bethlehem, others survived the

  927. family in Bethlehem.

  928. That makes you want to wonder why

  929. couldn't

  930. Boas survive? In fact, he was wealthy.

  931. Well, it was 10 years.

  932. But others survived.

  933. Here's a guy whose name my God is king.

  934. But he wasn't acting like it. He was he

  935. was contradicting his name.

  936. He wasn't trusting the king

  937. in a time of trouble. But I sympathize

  938. with him. And it's difficult for me to

  939. say that was a sinful decision in

  940. itself. It may have been

  941. you weren't allowed to to uh if you

  942. married a moabitete, the children

  943. weren't allowed to get in the temple for

  944. the 10th generation or something like

  945. that. God didn't care for those people

  946. what they were doing over there.

  947. And so he knew all of that.

  948. And so

  949. Naomi made a decision. I'm sure he

  950. didn't know how he was going to die.

  951. You know, whenever we travel, we got to

  952. realize I might not get back.

  953. I'm okay with that. I don't get buried

  954. in Athens.

  955. Have to get buried some other country.

  956. If I'm doing God's work, okay,

  957. get me on the plane and send me back.

  958. I'll just be buried there.

  959. But he didn't know that he was going to

  960. die there and put his family. Remember

  961. this was an agricultural economy and the

  962. men did the the uh their their work and

  963. the women did theirs but the man was the

  964. provider for the family and then his

  965. sons married Moabitete women which

  966. probably initially was that a bad

  967. decision or a good decision? I don't

  968. know if those Moabitete women got saved

  969. or at least made a profession before

  970. they married the sons or whether they

  971. didn't.

  972. But there's no indication that Ic was

  973. apostate,

  974. but it doesn't we're not quite sure that

  975. was the best decision.

  976. Um

  977. the two sons married Moabitete women.

  978. Was that a good decision or a bad? Well,

  979. they didn't have too many options.

  980. They didn't have too many options. You

  981. know, my parents,

  982. my parents, my dad was in World War II

  983. in the military in the Pacific. They had

  984. to come back for some surgery. Married

  985. my mom and they lived at Tacoma Park,

  986. Maryland. My mom worked at the

  987. water reed hospital I believe I'm

  988. remembering it correct correctly and dad

  989. started a business in Tacoma Park

  990. Maryland

  991. and that they married in 45 and they

  992. were there for a while and they made a

  993. decision to come back to Chilikathy

  994. where they were both raised Chilikathy

  995. Ohio now what if they hadn't made that

  996. decision

  997. I was born in 49

  998. I wouldn't have been back. I wouldn't

  999. have known about Ohio except maybe visit

  1000. grandparents.

1001. My whole life could have been different.

1002. I'd have been raised in DC.

1003. Now, they were going to Good Baptist

1004. church there and they were hearing the

1005. word of God. They were Christians when

1006. they married. No doubt I'd have gone on

1007. with the Lord if I'd have been buried

1008. there. But their decision affected my

  1009. decision,

  1010. my options.

1011. And Olimc's decision, whether bad or

1012. good, affected his wife, affected his

1013. sons. We can't control outcomes, can we?

1014. This is the hard thing about making

  1015. decisions. We don't know what we're

  1016. going to get into.

1017. But decisions need to be made sometime.

  1018. And it irritates me

  1019. when young people today

1020. when young people today get upset at

1021. their parents for making a decision that

1022. they didn't that they thought were not

  1023. is not good.

1024. Maybe their parents made a hundred good

1025. decisions and one bad one. And young

1026. people today are saying one strike and

  1027. you're out.

  1028. That's horrible.

1029. They wouldn't want somebody doing that

1030. to them, but they'd feel like parents

1031. are fair game. Parents got to be 100%

1032. right every time. Well, I'm done with

1033. it. That's the time in which we live.

1034. And that is a horrible apostasy

1035. according to second Timothy. They don't

  1036. have natural affection.

  1037. Horrible.

1038. But anyway, the decisions were made

1039. and others were affected by the

1040. decisions. And that's true of everyone.

1041. All of us have made good ones and bad.

1042. And Orpa and Ruth made decisions. They

1043. they made professions of faith. They

1044. changed religions, at least outwardly on

  1045. Orpa's part.

1046. But what a shock to their lives when the

1047. plans were in the waste basket.

1048. Now their options are really limited.

1049. They married Jewish boys and professed

1050. religion in in uh Jehovah

1051. in doing it and now they're stuck.

  1052. And

1053. the life of all three of these women

1054. looks pretty hard, doesn't it? Is there

1055. somebody here in your life just seems

1056. like one bad thing after another and you

1057. trying to make good decisions and still

1058. things have been turning out difficult

1059. and you want to make good decisions and

1060. you think about it but still it doesn't

1061. seem like things go well.

1062. These are horrible theologians but I'll

1063. quote the Rolling Stones in 1969.

1064. You can't always get what you want.

1065. They're talking about drugs and politics

1066. and and so-called love and the love. You

1067. can't always get what you want. But it's

1068. true of God's providence, too, right?

1069. You can't always get what you want. Life

1070. doesn't always turn out just the way you

  1071. want it to.

1072. But thank God we have a God in control.

1073. We have decisions to make

  1074. and sometimes they're hard.

1075. Put your place put yourself in Esther's

  1076. position.

  1077. And her cousin said,

1078. "There's higher purposes going on here.

1079. Who knows whether or not you come to the

1080. kingdom for such a time as this?

1081. It's not always about us. It's about

  1082. others. It's about God.

1083. And life throws us curve balls, but

1084. God's pitching the curve balls.

1085. There's higher and greater purposes than

1086. we can understand or realize.

1087. I'm going to say this and I'm out for

1088. today and I guess my message for next

  1089. week is already prepared.

1090. Will work for in Ruth. But

1091. these two widow, these three widows,

1092. the enemy was too old to get married.

1093. But the two young women were.

1094. And the two young women that we see in

1095. our text, one went back,

  1096. one went on.

1097. And if you study the book of Ruth,

1098. you'll know something. We'll see it next

1099. time. Did you know there were two

1100. redeemers, two qualified redeemers in

  1101. Bethlehem? Not one.

1102. You ever thought about that in

  1103. relationship to these two

  1104. hills?

1105. The older redeemer didn't want to do his

1106. job because it was going to cost him.

1107. There was that live right marriage and

1108. all the went with that when you marry

1109. your brother's widow and raise up

1110. someone for your widow. We'll we'll get

1111. to that next time. But there were two

1112. men. You said, "Well, he would he'd want

1113. to do it." Well, maybe he didn't want to

1114. do it because for whatever reason he

1115. didn't want to marry Ruth, but maybe

1116. he'd been somebody would marry or Paul.

1117. You You never think about that. I'd had

  1118. one over there.

1119. God's got an answer for our troubles.

1120. God's got an answer for our

  1121. difficulties.

  1122. There's potential provision.

  1123. And I know God's sovereign. And I'm not

1124. taking away anything from the

1125. sovereignty of God by the things I'm

  1126. saying this morning.

1127. But off they go in the same direction.

1128. or Paul made her decision and went back

1129. to her family and to her gods and to her

  1130. idolatry.

1131. Uh Naomi and Ruth went home.

  1132. Naomi

1133. was a God focused woman.

1134. Every you hear her talk, she's talking

1135. about she's always bringing the Lord in

1136. the Lord in the Lord in.

1137. And Ruth became a God focused woman

1138. before she ever got this.

  1139. Your God

  1140. will be my God.

1141. And so we will look at that next time.

1142. It takes Godfocused people to produce

  1143. Godfocused people.

1144. We got to love God more than anything

  1145. else.

1146. We have a have to have a priority of God

1147. over everything else, even over our own

1148. comfort and her own per everything.

  1149. And

1150. Naomi was a Godfocused person and she

1151. produced a God focused person. I believe

1152. in her sons and in her husband as much

  1153. as possible

  1154. and in the daughters-in-law

1155. as much as could be done. But we can't

1156. always choose what other people choose.

1157. And the test came and Orpaul went back

  1158. and

  1159. Ruth went on

1160. and became the ancestors ancestrous

  1161. King David

  1162. Jesus.

1163. There's a future when we make good

1164. decisions. We may not live to see it.

1165. I don't think Ruth ever lived to find

  1166. out

1167. my son that was born to me through Boaz

  1168. became

1169. the ancestor of King David. She didn't

1170. live to see how much she contributed to

1171. history. And we won't either.

1172. Not till we stand before Jesus.

1173. We might think we're the biggest failure

1174. in our family. We might think we're the

1175. biggest family in our church, the

1176. biggest failure in our church, but we

1177. might be the one God uses.

1178. To think it's always the pastor is to

  1179. think wrongfully.

1180. God uses every Christian. He saved you

1181. for a purpose. He saved me for a

  1182. purpose.

1183. And we don't get to choose who God uses.

1184. If you don't know the Lord as your

  1185. savior this morning,

1186. so thrilled that you're here. And I want

  1187. to tell you,

  1188. it's hard to be a Christian,

1189. but it's harder not to be.

  1190. Choose your hard.

  1191. Choose your heart.

1192. And will you not will you not say to the

1193. twel apostles to the reformers to the

1194. martyrs that died to the missionaries

1195. and the pilgrims and the Puritans and

1196. all the Christians down through

1197. history's wingly moody martyrs here and

1198. there your people are my people your god

  1199. is my god

  1200. will we not remember

  1201. in 2 Corinthians 8:9

    2 Corinthians 8:9

1202. as Paul said to You know the grace of

1203. our Lord Jesus Christ that though he was

1204. rich, he became poor for your sake so

1205. that you might that through his poverty

1206. you might be made rich. That's what such

1207. a one would not do. He would not he

1208. would not limit his finances

1209. to do to help Ruth.

1210. Now we don't know his situation.

  1211. Nobody's criticizing him. I'm just

1212. saying Boaz did what he wouldn't do just

1213. like Ruth did what Naomi with or

1214. God help us as we wait for the coming of

1215. the Lord to be about his business and to

1216. realize the importance of our life even

1217. if we live in a small town.

1218. Did God do something in Athens, Ohio? He

1219. did something in Bethlehem. Bethlehem

  1220. was a a little place. It's still a

  1221. little place.

  1222. 90% Muslim right now.

  1223. It's still a little place.

1224. I forget the population, but I've been

1225. there. It's not much bigger than Athens.

  1226. Probably about the same.

1227. God can work in big

  1228. with regular people.

1229. And so all our decisions, not just the

  1230. church's decisions or the leadership's

1231. decision, are important decisions. Next

1232. week, we'll look at that more in more

1233. detail and see how God fleshed that out

1234. and we'll finish this message.

1235. Father, we thank you for your grace and

  1236. goodness. If there's anybody here that's

  1237. been on the fence,

  1238. they've been saying, "Well, someday I'll

1239. get saved. Someday I'll repent. Someday

  1240. I'll believe." not today.

1241. May by your grace you draw them to

  1242. yourself.

1243. May they have resolution in their heart.

1244. Whatever the future begins, whatever the

  1245. trial is,

1246. God's people are going to be my people.

1247. And God's people, God is going to be my

  1248. God

  1249. in Jesus name. Amen.
