  1. started a new series

  2. on sound doctrine.

  3. Last week we looked at the word of God,

  4. all the important things the Bible has

  5. to say about that.

  6. They're all throughout the Bible.

  7. It's an important subject and a very

  8. very

  9. in-depth subject

  10. is the word of God. It's from God

  11. himself.

  12. So it's a

  13. profitable as we saw in Timothy

  14. for us to study the word. And this

  15. morning we're going to look at the

  16. purposes of the word of God. the

  17. purposes of the word of God.

  18. And we have with it here, open your

  19. Bibles to the book of Ephesians.

  20. Don't have any certain context

  21. in this series or in this message, but

  22. we're going to look at a few

  23. important verses this morning.

  24. And we come to the purpose of the word

  25. of God

  26. this morning.

  27. And the Bible says that it is the the

  28. mind of God. It's the mind of Christ.

  29. It's the mind of God. It's his thoughts.

  30. It's his will. It's his purposes.

  31. And it's his word. And it's important

  32. for us to see beyond the written word

  33. and to see the great God behind the

  34. written word.

  35. And he's the living God. And he gives us

  36. a living word.

  37. And the Bible mentions building

  38. and laboring.

  39. So as we build and we labor

  40. in this life, we want the word of God to

  41. be our guide.

  42. So that the purposes that we are

  43. involved in and with

  44. are from God himself and from his word.

  45. So the word of God is uh the psalmists

  46. over and over

  47. you know many folks in the Old Testament

  48. you know it it it was their abode. It

  49. was where they stayed, you know, they

  50. didn't get distracted from God and from

  51. his word. It was their place that they

  52. dwelt. It was David said it was a

  53. lantern to his path, a light into his

  54. path

  55. in this dark world in which we live.

  56. So those are the comparisons that we

  57. have as we begin to look at the purposes

  58. of God and and and these great things to

  59. know that that the word of God is God's

  60. mind. It's God's will. It's God's

  61. purposes.

  62. So, we should be involved in what those

  63. purposes are. And here in chapter 2 in

  64. verse 19,

  65. you guys are familiar with all these

  66. things, but we are so strangers and

  67. sojourers and fellow citizens of of the

  68. saints in the household of God. That's

  69. who we are. This great book of Ephesians

  70. is uh all about that

  71. for us Gentiles to see.

  72. And there were many Gentiles in Ephesus.

  73. And Paul spent a lot of time there.

  74. And Paul says also we are built upon the

  75. foundation of the apostles and the

  76. prophets, Jesus Christ being the chief

  77. to cornerstone in whom all the building

  78. fitly flamed together grows unto a holy

  79. temple unto the Lord. So here here's

  80. that thought of growing. Here's that

  81. thought of building. Uh here's that

  82. thought of occupying and being in God's

  83. word.

  84. And he then he says here's a verse that

  85. I wanted. In whom you also built

  86. together for a habitation of God through

  87. the spirit. So the word habitation means

  88. to be inhabited by. So we're inhabited

  89. by God. We're inhabited by God through

  90. the spirit.

  91. as we build, as we're on these uh we're

  92. on this journey that he talks about up

  93. there. As we are strangers and

  94. sojourers, we're citizens of heaven and

  95. we build uh here upon the earth and God

  96. is our the one who come and inhabits us.

  97. He dwells in us. He's he says he is our

  98. dwelling place and that's what he wants.

  99. You know, that's what he has longed for.

  100. And to neglect this is sin.

  101. And if you will turn over to chapter 4

  102. and verse 12

  103. here are here's the purposes of the word

  104. of God. Here's the purposes of knowing

  105. uh these things about God

  106. and and the word of God for the

  107. perfecting of the saints

  108. for the work of the ministry for the

  109. edifying of the body of Christ. So

  110. that's what God wants. That's God's

  111. will. That's God's uh desire is for us

  112. to be doing these things. That's how he

  113. dwells in us as we uh you know, we're in

  114. the word of God. We uh we're in church.

  115. We're a part of the body of Christ.

  116. And he says there in verse 14, here's

  117. the great sin. Here's here if we neglect

  118. this, if we don't do this, if we don't

  119. do verse 12, here's what's going to

  120. happen. that we be henceforth no more

  121. children tossed to and fro, carried

  122. about by every wind of doctrine by the

  123. slight of men and cunning craftiness by

  124. which they lay in wait to deceive. So

  125. there's the you know the the the

  126. antidote to that is that we do what

  127. verse 12 says. So if we neglect verse

  128. 12, verse 14's going to be the result.

  129. And this is, you know, we don't want to

  130. neglect God nor his word.

  131. And again, that's the result. So the

  132. pastors and the teachers up there in

  133. verse 11 have a great responsibility not

  134. to neglect the word of God so that we

  135. know the purposes of God. And we're

  136. building this building as we saw over

  137. there in chapter 4. So, and we're

  138. building for eternity someday. You know,

  139. that's what Paul told the Corinthians.

  140. Someday, you know, our lives are going

  141. to be judged, you know, not for sin.

  142. Jesus died and paid for all our sin, but

  143. for our good works. And you know, how

  144. how we build bel

  145. you know, and that's what Paul said to

  146. the Corinthians, take heed how you

  147. build.

  148. So many people have replaced, you know,

  149. doctrine for something else or the will

  150. of God or the word of God for something

  151. else. And there's not another

  152. alternative here. You know, this is the

  153. will of God. This is what what God

  154. wants. And then if you recall down in

  155. verse 15, he says, "Speak the truth in

  156. love." There's that word grow up into

  157. him in all things. So there's that

  158. growth. There's that maturing. There's

  159. that building that Paul spoke of back

  160. there and God dwelling in us and and and

  161. us knowing him and his will even Christ.

  162. So we we dwell in Christ. He is the the

  163. one.

  164. And then this the building is as well

  165. mentioned again in verse 16. from whom

  166. the whole body fitly joined together and

  167. compacted by that which every joint

  168. supplies according to the effectual

  169. working in the measure of every part

  170. making increase of the body to the

  171. edifying of itself in love. So, we have

  172. all the positive things here that are

  173. going to happen if we do what the Bible

  174. says to do, which is to study it and to

  175. know these sound doctrines and to know

  176. Christ and to know all these things.

  177. It's important for us to not only are we

  178. going to, you know, stay away from being

  179. tossed to and fro, it's going to build

  180. us up here and increase us here as he

  181. talks about in verse 16. So there

  182. there's no substitute for this. There's

  183. no there's no other thing here. God

  184. didn't say here's plan B. You know this

  185. is God's plan here. So as we look at the

  186. importance of the word of God and we

  187. look at the purposes of the word of God

  188. there there are many benefits to knowing

  189. what these purposes are and here some of

  190. them are we're going to increase. Um,

  191. and then over in chapter 4, verse 7,

  192. while we're here,

  193. we have these gifts that that uh God has

  194. given us. So,

  195. you know, these gifts are supernatural.

  196. We we didn't go to, you know, to to

  197. Walmart and get them. Um, we didn't, you

  198. know, our parents didn't leave these to

  199. us in their will.

  200. The gifts that we have in the body of

  201. Christ, these all come from God.

  202. So we need these gifts in order to do

  203. this, to be doing what God wants done.

  204. He says in verse 7, but unto every one

  205. of us is given grace according to the

  206. measure of the gift of Christ. So you

  207. know there's a supernatural gift that we

  208. have. Each one of us has as he says

  209. there, everyone has this and we all we

  210. all need each other. We all need these

  211. very important things. And then Paul

  212. says over in chapter three about, you

  213. know, the mystery of God being revealed

  214. and, you know, he was in a, you know,

  215. God was going to use him to uh bring it

  216. to the Gentiles and, you know, so this

  217. is a great thing. You know, how are why

  218. should we find something else instead of

  219. what God has intended?

  220. And then in verse nine

  221. here is that the mystery of Christ here

  222. and to make all men see all Gentiles,

  223. Jews, all of us wherever we live. This

  224. is the solution. This is the answer. Why

  225. would we you know trade this in for

  226. something else

  227. uh which God at the beginning of the

  228. ages had been hidden in in God who

  229. created all things by Christ. So the the

  230. mystery is Christ. The person is Christ.

  231. God's work is Christ. Why would we, you

  232. know, go and try and, you know, get rid

  233. of him and come up with something else?

  234. It's would be very foolish. Um, one man

  235. said this about about missions and about

  236. the evangelism of the church. He said,

  237. "If a church has forgotten the great

  238. commission, she is not under the

  239. direction of her savior and lord."

  240. So, you know, that's what we give up

  241. when we don't do things God's way. we're

  242. uh we're off track and you know there

  243. there's only one interpretation

  244. of the word of God. Turn over to

  245. Galatians chapter 1

    Galatians 1 chapter mention

  246. whether we arrive at it or not.

  247. There's only one interpretation

  248. of the word of God and and the apostles

  249. did.

  250. You know, people tried to say, "Well,

  251. you know, Paul said something different

  252. than Peter, or Peter says something

  253. different than John."

  254. That's not true. Not in the word of God.

  255. Anyway,

  256. these men all agreed.

  257. And they dealt with that. They dealt

  258. with people saying, "Well, you guys

  259. don't agree." And they said, "Oh, yeah,

  260. we do." They met together in Jerusalem

  261. in Acts 15. And Peter at the end of his

  262. life says, "The apostles are still

  263. together." And we're united on this one

  264. interpretation of what this book means

  265. and what it says.

  266. And you know, whether we arrive at it or

  267. not, I mean, there are people that

  268. struggle. That's what Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  269. 4 says. If you don't get good teaching,

  270. if you don't get good sound doctrine,

  271. you're going to be tossed to and fro.

  272. You're not going to know what to

  273. believe. But if you are, you're going to

  274. know what to believe.

  275. So the apostles did that. And you know,

  276. there's only one interpretation of this

  277. book, and it's the one that the apostles

  278. gave and the Lord Jesus gave. And my my

  279. old brother Thornton, he and I were, we

  280. were like the apostles. We were in a

  281. total agreement on every doctrine in

  282. this book that we talked about. It

  283. linked. He and I. It was a was a

  284. wonderful thing to be united with

  285. somebody on what you believe and what's

  286. in this book.

  287. And um it's so important. And why is

  288. that? Because you know that's what the

  289. Bible does. It it unites us and it

  290. unites us in Christ. It unites us in

  291. this one interpretation of this book.

  292. So the Bible, it doesn't tell us what's

  293. wrong.

  294. You know, sometimes it just comes right

  295. out and tells us what's wrong, but it's

  296. it's it's not about always about what's

  297. wrong. It's always about what is right.

  298. And the truth is greater than the lies

  299. that are out there and the the cults

  300. that are out there.

  301. And uh you know the Bible doesn't tell

  302. us everything that is false. It only

  303. helps us to see in the word of God.

  304. That's why it's so important to bring

  305. all our questions here to the word of

  306. God, to the authority of the word of

  307. God, to the sufficiency of the word of

  308. God until we all come into that

  309. perfecting, till we all get to that

  310. point that we're all united in Christ.

  311. And we do have this great warning

  312. from Paul here about anything else other

  313. than what this book says.

  314. And he says here in verse eight, by the

  315. way,

  316. many of the cults that were started by

  317. men

  318. uh fall into this category. Some of them

  319. even said they got their their their

  320. writings and their information from

  321. angels. And Paul covers that. He says,

  322. "Though we, an apostle, Paul, or an

  323. angel from heaven, preach any other

  324. gospel unto you than that which you have

  325. been preached unto you, let him be

  326. accursed. let him be damned. It's

  327. damnation. Paul says, "For anyone who

  328. who preaches any other gospel than this

  329. book, any other sound doctrine than this

  330. book, it's all united in one."

  331. So, we have great warnings like this

  332. here that rest upon those who pervert

  333. the gospel. And there we can't number

  334. them all, can we? There's so many of

  335. them. But the warning is here. And this

  336. is uh this is not a popular thing to

  337. say, well, there's only one way to

  338. heaven. Well, you know, who do you guys

  339. think you are? Well, it's not that at

  340. all. It's a it's thus sayeth the Lord.

  341. It's the authority of the word of God.

  342. It's the sufficiency of the word of God.

  343. This is from God himself. God said it.

  344. If anyone preach any other gospel than

  345. that which you have preached, let him be

  346. accursed here, Paul says. So, you know,

  347. this is going to, you know, this is

  348. going to ruffle feathers, you know, and

  349. Jesus said that, didn't he? You know, he

  350. said that the enemies, your enemies are

  351. going to rise up. They're going to be

  352. your own they're going to be from your

  353. own friends. They're going to be from

  354. your own family.

  355. So, you know, people that are close to

  356. us, you know, as well may be the ones

  357. that

  358. um are trying to to to preach another

  359. gospel. We're trying to go another way.

  360. There is no other way than God's way.

  361. And you know, Jesus said the enemies are

  362. going to rise up and they're going to be

  363. of your own household.

  364. And you know, we're going to we're going

  365. to toss around with our relatives over

  366. these very things,

  367. but we can't give in.

  368. And Jesus lamented over Jerusalem.

  369. Remember in in Matthew chapter 23, his

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  370. great lament over Jerusalem, he said,

  371. "Woe unto the Pharisees."

  372. He called them a generation of vipers.

  373. He says, "How shall you escape the

  374. damnation of hell?"

  375. And Paul says a similar thing here to

  376. the Galatians.

  377. What God said and the the sound doctrine

  378. of this book, especially this gospel of

  379. grace, don't pervert it.

  380. And that's what he mentioned up there in

  381. verse 7. Another time Paul says

  382. um in 1 Corinthians 16

  383. at the end of the book of Corinthians

  384. Paul says something

  385. that we want to look at here. You know

  386. that's that's what love does. It warns

  387. people.

  388. Get out the you know the building's on

  389. fire.

  390. Get out of the world that's on fire. You

  391. know the the only way out is through

  392. Christ.

  393. That's what the word of God says. And

  394. here at the end of the book of

  395. Corinthians, Paul says a similar thing

  396. here. He says in verse 13, "Watch, stand

  397. fast in the faith. Quit you like men. Be

  398. strong.

  399. Let your things be done with love." So

  400. love warns people. Love says, "Hey,

  401. there's only one way to heaven.

  402. And I beseech you, brethren, that you

  403. know the house of Stephanus, that he is

  404. the fruits of Aaya,

  405. and that they are devoted themselves to

  406. the ministry of the saints, and that you

  407. submit yourselves unto such that

  408. everyone that helps us in the labor. So,

  409. we submit to the word of God. We submit

  410. to what it says. This is not what we

  411. said. This is not what we think. This is

  412. not our opinion.

  413. And I'm glad at the coming of Stephanus

  414. and Anakas and those things that are

  415. lacking on your part and they have

  416. supplied for they have refreshed my

  417. spirit and yours. Therefore acknowledge

  418. them as such.

  419. The churches of Asia greet you. Aquilla

  420. and Priscilla greet you

  421. much in the Lord

  422. with the church that is in their house.

  423. All the brethren greet you. Greet one

  424. another with a holy kiss.

  425. We got a few of them in South America.

  426. If any man love not the Lord Jesus

  427. Christ, let him be an at Marinatha. So

  428. Paul says that here again, you know, and

  429. Jesus said it in his ministry. Woe unto

  430. the Pharisees. You know, woe unto the

  431. Jerusalem. You've killed the prophets.

  432. He here Paul says, woe unto those who

  433. preach any other gospel or any other

  434. doctrine than what Paul preached. So, we

  435. want to make sure that we are preaching

  436. what the word of God says. Um, just a

  437. couple warnings as we begin. Turn over

  438. to John chapter 5. Well, how do we

    John 5 chapter mention

  439. approach the scripture? If it's from

  440. God, it's of God. It's it's full of

  441. these warnings. It's full of this truth.

  442. It's full of this sound doctrine. How do

  443. we approach the word of God? Well,

  444. I'd like to look at what Jesus did

  445. here in John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  446. You know, the Bible's not like any other

  447. book.

  448. You know, you don't start in in chapter

  449. one and read to the last chapter and

  450. you're done. You know, that's not how it

  451. works. The Bible, it says everything in

  452. this book is profitable. So wherever you

  453. want to open your Bible, the Bible says

  454. you can gain from that. It's profitable.

  455. Every verse.

  456. So the Bible's not like any other book

  457. in that matter. And we're never finished

  458. when it comes to this book.

  459. And here in John,

  460. you know, a lot of people had a problem

  461. with the deity of Christ. And if you got

  462. a problem with the deity of Christ,

  463. John's your gospel because that's the

  464. very subject of this book.

  465. So here we have uh some of the witnesses

  466. to Jesus.

  467. I wasn't there. You weren't there. How

  468. do we know we can believe him? I mean,

  469. he there were

  470. all kinds of people that said they were

  471. Jesus. And even Jesus said all kinds of

  472. people were going to say they're me.

  473. Well, we have the witness from heaven.

  474. We have a the Bible says where two or

  475. three witnesses are gathered together,

  476. you know, let the testimony be

  477. established. So, that's what we have. We

  478. have here John the Baptist. We have here

  479. uh we have here the father's witness.

  480. And we have here the the witness of the

  481. scriptures. So here we have three

  482. important witnesses to this the the

  483. deity of Christ who he is and what he

  484. says.

  485. And

  486. if we begin in verse 30 he says that I

  487. can't of my own self do nothing.

  488. As I hear I judge my judgment is just

  489. because I seek not my own but the will

  490. of him that sent me. So you know even

  491. people said that to Jesus. Well, who do

  492. you think you are?

  493. And Jesus says, well, I don't think I'm

  494. anyone. I don't want I'm not here for

  495. honor. I'm here for my father.

  496. And he says, if I bear witness of

  497. myself, my witness is not true. There is

  498. another that beareth witness of me. And

  499. I know that witness which he witnesses

  500. of me is true.

  501. And you sent unto John, and he bore

  502. witness unto the truth. But I receive

  503. not the testimony of man.

  504. For these things I say that you must be

  505. saved.

  506. And he was a burning and shining light.

  507. And the willingness was a reason to

  508. rejoice in the light. So, you know,

  509. John's testimony was not enough. He's

  510. another human being. Maybe he got it

  511. wrong. Well, Jesus says, "My father is

  512. my witness." He never got it wrong.

  513. greater witness than that of John. For

  514. the works which the father has given me

  515. to finish the same works that I do bear

  516. witness of me that the father has sent

  517. me. So Jesus points to his to his works

  518. as witness to who he is like he did with

  519. John.

  520. And the father himself who sent me has

  521. borne witness of me and you have neither

  522. heard his voice at any time nor seen his

  523. shape. We haven't. I know there are a

  524. lot of people that say they have, but

  525. nobody has heard the voice of God. Can't

  526. hear from God and live.

  527. And he says here, "And you have not his

  528. word abiding in you. For whom he has

  529. sent you have believed not." So Jesus

  530. points to the Old Testament

  531. and says, "My father's word bears

  532. witness to me."

  533. And then here's here's how we're to

  534. approach the scripture.

  535. Search the scripture, for in them you

  536. think you have eternal life, and they

  537. are they which testify of me.

  538. So Jesus says, I'm the living word from

  539. the living God. You know, you want to

  540. listen to me and you won't come to me.

  541. He says in verse 40, that you might have

  542. life. They reject him. They won't come

  543. God's way. You know, that's the problem.

  544. If you come God's way, you'll you will

  545. know the truth.

  546. And this word search here means to

  547. examine closely and inquire carefully,

  548. you know. So every scripture uh on every

  549. page um is profitable for us. And Jesus

  550. says they are that which testify of me.

  551. Well, if the Old Testament testifies of

  552. him, how much more does the New

  553. Testament testify of him? So we need to

  554. examine the scriptures. uh with the

  555. utmost care. You remember Peter said

  556. last week, you know, he said that's what

  557. the prophets did. They searched the

  558. scripture

  559. because it was profitable. So

  560. both Christ and the apostles say we need

  561. to search the scripture.

  562. Look at chapter 7

  563. and verse 52.

  564. John chapter 7 verse 52.

    John 7:52

  565. And they he said here they answered and

  566. they said unto him, "Are you also

  567. Galilee? Search and look for out of

  568. Galilee arises no prophet." It's the

  569. same thing. Search the scriptures. Look

  570. at the scriptures. And uh every man went

  571. to his own house. Well, then here we go

  572. in chapter 8, one of my favorite

  573. chapters

  574. uh here. And if you will look down in

  575. verse 17,

  576. he says, "And it is also written in your

  577. law that the testimony of two men is

  578. true." So we're he's still talking about

  579. the word of God here and the and the law

  580. and that the the word of God. That's why

  581. we search it. It bears witness,

  582. you know, and that's what Jesus said for

  583. us to do. Search the scriptures. For in

  584. them you think you have life. They speak

  585. of me. They testify of me. They witness

  586. of me.

  587. So we get our witness from the word of

  588. God. We get our testimony from the word

  589. of God about

  590. Jesus. I am the one that bears witness

  591. of myself. The father sent me. He bears

  592. witness of me. And he goes on and says

  593. in verse 19, then say unto him, where's

  594. your father?

  595. And Jesus said, you neither know me nor

  596. my father. If you had known, you would

  597. have known my father also. And these

  598. words spoke Jesus in the treasury as he

  599. taught in the temple. So that's what we

  600. need. We need the teachings of Jesus. We

  601. need the word of God. We need the

  602. testimony. We need the witness of these

  603. things. So no wonder he says up there in

  604. verse 12, John 8:12,

    John 8:12

  605. I am the light of the world. He that

  606. follows me will not walk in darkness,

  607. but shall have the light of life.

  608. The Pharisees said, "You bear witness of

  609. yourself. Your witness is not true." And

  610. Jesus said, "Though I bear witness of

  611. myself." Yeah. Yet my witness is true.

  612. For I know from where I've come, where

  613. I'm going to go, and you cannot tell

  614. from where I've come and where I've go.

  615. You judge according to the flesh. Jesus

  616. says, "I judge no man."

  617. So when we examine the scriptures like

  618. Jesus said to do, when we search the

  619. scriptures like Jesus said for us to do,

  620. guess who we're going to find? We're

  621. going to find Christ. The very one the

  622. Pharisees couldn't find. And and the

  623. very ones Jesus says, "You won't listen

  624. to my witness. You want to go some other

  625. way." There is no other light. There is

  626. no other way than Jesus.

  627. and he's in all 66 books uh of this one

  628. book and you know this as I mentioned

  629. that there's only one interpretation of

  630. this book and uh you know there's only

  631. and it's all united in one truth you

  632. know wherever we turn Genesis 1,

  633. Revelation 22 and everywhere in between

  634. it's all united in its testimony of the

  635. truth and its testimony ony of Jesus.

  636. You know, we have secondary

  637. applications and and uh multiple

  638. applications at sometimes with with the

  639. word of God. And and I'm not saying

  640. there aren't verses that we struggle

  641. with, you know, we do. But um anything

  642. that we struggle with, we you know, we

  643. should come to a conclusion at some

  644. point about it. You know, you know, am I

  645. right or is am I listening to this

  646. right? And and that's why we all need

  647. help and we all need uh teaching and we

  648. all want to be exposed to the word of

  649. God. We all want to know what this sound

  650. doctrine is. That's why

  651. second Timothy 3 says that it's it is

  652. all profitable.

  653. So if it's all profitable then it all

  654. must be rightly divided.

  655. you know, we must agree on what what it

  656. says and what it teaches and be united

  657. in that, you know, from cover to cover.

  658. And we have things like, you know, where

  659. Paul said in Ephesians chapter 3 that

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  660. God kept these things hidden, you know,

  661. so no amount of looking is going to find

  662. something God hides.

  663. So we want to look where God has put

  664. something, you know, and God has put

  665. something right in front of us. And

  666. that's his son. That's his word. That's

  667. his truth. That's the church age in

  668. which we live in. We saw those verses

  669. back there about, you know, being built

  670. up in the faith and those things. So um,

  671. turn over to Matthew chapter 10.

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  672. So in the in in all of this ministry

  673. that Jesus had and these workings

  674. in the ministry that he had with his

  675. apostles and his disciples,

  676. you know, he zeroed in on some things

  677. that we as a church need to zero in on,

  678. too. Remember the fellow said, we we're

  679. not following our Lord if we're not

  680. evangelistic as a church. were not

  681. involved in mission.

  682. So here we see Jesus doing this very

  683. thing in Matthew chapter 10.

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  684. Well, we have to back up verse 36 here

  685. in a second.

  686. He says when he saw the multitude, he

  687. was moved with compassion

  688. because they were faint. They were

  689. scattered abroad as a sheep having no

  690. shepherd.

  691. So here's Jesus compassion on the lost.

  692. So if we're his body and he's the head

  693. of the church, then you know this is

  694. what

  695. when it comes to purposes would be a

  696. great purpose

  697. is for us to remember this and do

  698. whatever he says.

  699. The harvest truly is plenteous, but the

  700. laborers are few. prayed therefore

  701. the Lord of the harvest that he will

  702. send forth the laborers into his

  703. harvest. So Jesus compassion upon the

  704. multitude. So you know we as his church

  705. we should have this and be all about

  706. this.

  707. But remember his direction up here in

  708. chapter 10 that you know they went to

  709. the Jew first. So this is specifically,

  710. you know, a good place to point out

  711. where it it's important to rightly

  712. divide the word of God

  713. because he says, "Go not in verse 5 of

  714. chapter 10, go not in the way of the

  715. Gentiles and enter any city of Samaria.

  716. Enter not." So he's, you know, very

  717. specific on what he wants them to do. He

  718. said, "Go to the lost sheep of the house

  719. of Israel." So rightly dividing the word

  720. of truth. Here's a good example of

  721. listening to what Jesus said, you know,

  722. and doing what Jesus said, you know. So

  723. what' they do? They all left and went

  724. and talked to the Gentiles. No, they

  725. listened to Jesus. They did what he

  726. said. So profitable Bible study results

  727. in our faith standing in the power of

  728. God and not in the wisdom of men. And

  729. that's the same lesson these men had to

  730. learn. as they followed him and did what

  731. he said. Um,

  732. so God's word, you know, it it has it's

  733. God's power

  734. and we saw that last week and uh you

  735. know that's what they did. They went

  736. forth and they preached the kingdom.

  737. And uh you know there were times when we

  738. have examples of this in the Old

  739. Testament.

  740. Remember and God

  741. told Moses to go tell Pharaoh remember

  742. told him what to say.

  743. So the power God's power is in what he

  744. said and what he says.

  745. you know, for us who are the the

  746. preachers and the teachers and the the

  747. those who are um involved in sound

  748. doctrine, that's what we want. We want

  749. thus sayeth the Lord just when we want

  750. to say God said this and God didn't say

  751. that. So our instruction and our

  752. understanding comes from God himself and

  753. we listen to God like Moses did. We can

  754. go and tell his enemies what he said.

  755. So that's the duty of the spokesman.

  756. No more, no less.

  757. You know, that's what the disciples had

  758. to learn. Remember, they had some

  759. problems. We're going to see some of

  760. those problems that they had here in a

  761. minute. But when they had problems, they

  762. they veered off from what Jesus told him

  763. to do. And he get them right back to

  764. where they belong.

  765. So, you know, the apostles saw this in

  766. Jesus. They saw him say, you know, he

  767. had compassion on the multitude. He he

  768. uh he went about doing good as, you

  769. know, the Bible says and healing, you

  770. know, those who were sick. He he cared.

  771. He had compassion. He legitimately

  772. did. And we just looked at those things

  773. there. And then he says over here, if

  774. you will, turn to 19,

  775. Matthew 19.

  776. Verse 27.

  777. Then answered Peter, "Behold, we have

  778. forsaken all and follow thee. What will

  779. we have thereafter?" So there there's a

  780. there's a you know, there's this for us.

  781. You know, they, you know, I can't ride

  782. on Peter's forsaking

  783. things and and and following Jesus. I

  784. have to follow him. You know, none of us

  785. can get away with that. We can't ride on

  786. somebody else's faith or anyone else's

  787. conviction.

  788. We have to be the ones that say, "Lord,

  789. I'm going to follow you. I don't know

  790. where we're going to end up, but I'm

  791. going to follow you." And Jesus said,

  792. "Verily, I say unto you in verse 28, you

  793. that follow me in the regeneration, when

  794. the Son of Man shall sit on the throne

  795. of his glory, you'll set with the 12

  796. thrones judging the 12 tribes of

  797. Israel." That still blows me away that

  798. things that have happened on this earth

  799. are going to be dealt with in heaven.

  800. So, we need to listen to this to Jesus.

  801. We need to follow Jesus. If we're going

  802. to keep up on this stuff and know this

  803. stuff and be prepared for these things,

  804. there's only one person that we can

  805. follow and only one person that we can

  806. listen to.

  807. And Jesus says, "Whatever you have to

  808. forsake in verse 29, houses, brethren,

  809. sisters, father, mother, wife, children,

  810. land."

  811. He says, "Many will be first and the

  812. first will be last." So

  813. following Jesus sometimes comes at a

  814. great cost.

  815. And then we have the great commission in

  816. Matthew. Turn to Matthew chapter 28.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  817. So if we're involved with Jesus in the

  818. ministry and we're being taught by him,

  819. we know the sound doctrine and we're we

  820. understand these things that someday

  821. we're all going to give an account.

  822. Someday everyone is going to have their

  823. own personal interview with Jesus. And

  824. that sort of changes the way we live.

  825. Then he says here in Matthew 28,

  826. you guys know this one. All authority is

  827. given me in heaven and earth. Go

  828. therefore teach all nations, baptizing

  829. them in the name of the father, the son,

  830. and the holy spirit, teaching them to

  831. observe all things whatsoever I

  832. commanded you. Could he be any more

  833. clear?

  834. So the purpose of the word of God is for

  835. us to do everything that it says, not

  836. the things that we want, the good things

  837. and and leave out the other things. We

  838. we want it all and he is with us always

  839. even to the end of the age. We don't

  840. want to lose sight

  841. of these things. And then you know Jesus

  842. repeats this again. You know I don't we

  843. don't have time to turn there. You you

  844. guys already know what happened in Acts

  845. chapter one. He does it again. you know

  846. they're you know I didn't you guys

  847. forget my great commission go into all

  848. the world and preach the gospel Peter

  849. said Lord are you going to set up your

  850. kingdom

  851. so they had different ideas than what

  852. Jesus did but Jesus here is saying go

  853. into all the world and preach the gospel

  854. that's what the church did as best it

  855. could and that's what Acts chapter 1

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  856. starts out with

  857. so you know they went and And it went

  858. very quickly, didn't it? Turn to 2

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  859. Corinthians chapter 5.

  860. 2 Corinthians chapter 5.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  861. And we see this in them, you know, we

  862. see in Peter

  863. what the Lord wanted him to do. I'm

  864. going to do it. You know, I'm not going

  865. to be popular. It's not going to be it's

  866. going to cost me, you know, it's going

  867. to be expensive to follow Jesus, but I

  868. better pay the price.

  869. And that's what these men did and the

  870. apostles all the way to death

  871. except John.

  872. And here we see it in Paul. I mean, Paul

  873. was just,

  874. you know, we've got that one chapter

  875. that we looked at where he just talked

  876. about all the things that he did back in

  877. the one of the other books there and

  878. that whole chapter he

  879. at the end of it he he basically says,

  880. "If you want me to stop preaching the

  881. gospel, you're going to have to kill

  882. me."

  883. You know, so these guys had in them

  884. a hol the Holy Spirit and and this

  885. desire to get the word of God out, to

  886. get the to get the gospel out. They knew

  887. like the Lord Jesus that it was the most

  888. important thing in their life.

  889. And and here we have the most important

  890. thing in Paul's life.

  891. He says in verse 11, "Knowing therefore

  892. the terror of the Lord, we persuade men,

  893. but we were made manifest unto God, and

  894. I trust also made manifest in your

  895. conscience.

  896. For we commended not ourselves again

  897. unto you, but on occasion to glory on

  898. your behalf, that you may have somewhat

  899. to answer those who glory in appearance,

  900. but not in heart. For whether we beside

  901. oursel, it is God. Whether we be sober

  902. minded, it is for your cause. So, you

  903. know, Paul was all about this. He was

  904. all about the glory of God.

  905. You know, that's what the apostles saw

  906. in Jesus. That's what the disciples saw

  907. in Jesus. You know, when they he had

  908. compassion on the multitude

  909. was that he wanted his love spread. He

  910. wanted his gospel spread. He wanted his

  911. truth spread.

  912. And that's what verse 13 says. And

  913. whether we be beside ourselves, it is to

  914. God. Whether we be sober minded, it's

  915. for your cause, for the love of Christ

  916. constrains us because we just judge. If

  917. one died for all, then we're all dead.

  918. And he that died for all that they who

  919. should live should not henceforth live

  920. unto themselves. You know, so we're

  921. Christians. We can't live for ourselves

  922. anymore.

  923. But unto him who died for them and rose

  924. again. That's what Paul did.

  925. That's what Peter did. That's what all

  926. the apostles did all through the book of

  927. Acts and after the resurrection of

  928. Jesus. They knew this what what that man

  929. said goes.

  930. And then here he says, "Henceforth know

  931. we no man after the flesh, that though

  932. we have known Christ after the flesh,

  933. yet now henceforth know we him no more.

  934. Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he's

  935. a new creation." Wow. Aren't you glad of

  936. that?

  937. We're It's a supernatural thing now. You

  938. know, God saved me. God made me a new

  939. creation. You know, God has given me the

  940. Holy Spirit. God's given me a new

  941. nature. God has allowed me to repent and

  942. turn, you know, from the sin and the

  943. life that I was in because those things

  944. are passing away.

  945. And behold, all things have become new.

  946. All things are of God who has reconciled

  947. us to himself by Jesus Christ. He's

  948. given to us the ministry of

  949. reconciliation. So that's what we are.

  950. We're a ministry of reconciliation

  951. in the church because these men saw it

  952. in Christ. These men heard it from him.

  953. They got it from him

  954. and they passed it on to these churches

  955. to what that God was in Christ

  956. reconciling the world unto himself, not

  957. imputing their trespasses

  958. unto them. And he has committed to us

  959. the word

  960. of reconciliation. Now we are

  961. ambassadors for Christ. That's what we

  962. are.

  963. And and God did beg you. And now we beg

  964. you in Christstead. Be it reconciled

  965. to God. For he made him who knew no sin

  966. to be sin for us that we might be made

  967. the righteousness of God in him. And now

  968. Paul's going to talk about the ministry

  969. in verse six or excuse me, chapter six

  970. and the laboring and the building and

  971. and all those things.

  972. He says here, "We are workers together

  973. with him." Remember, he told the

  974. Corinthians that way back there in

  975. chapter one of the first book. We're

  976. laborers together with God. Paul was a

  977. laborer together with God. Peter was a

  978. laborer together with God. The church,

  979. the early church was a laborer together

  980. with God.

  981. He said, "Have you received the the

  982. grace of God in vain if you're not

  983. involved in this?"

  984. And he says,"For he says,"I have heard

  985. uh thee in time accepted in the day of

  986. salvation. Have I helped thee? Behold,

  987. now is the accepted time. Behold, now is

  988. the day of salvation." Remember Paul

  989. said back in verse 11, "I know the

  990. terror of the Lord. I'm going to

  991. persuade men.

  992. Give no offense um in anything that the

  993. ministry be not blamed."

  994. Um and he talks about here all these

  995. things that he went through and um the

  996. the thing that occupied Paul's mind

  997. was the glory of God

  998. and it's right here in front of me

  999. somewhere.

  1000. Paul's convinced of this

1001. um as he shared these things with us.

1002. And uh look in chapter 4, if you will,

  1003. verse 7,

1004. we have this treasure. What treasure?

1005. The gospel, the truth, the sound

1006. doctrine, the word of God.

1007. It's an incredible treasure to have.

  1008. It's incredible responsibility. It's an

1009. an amazing thing to be be saved

1010. in this in this life

1011. that the excellent of the power may be

1012. of God and not of us. We're troubled on

  1013. every side.

1014. Uh yet not distressed. We are perplexed

1015. but not in despair. Persecuted but not

1016. forsaken. Cast down but not destroyed.

1017. always sparing about the body of the

1018. dying of our Lord Jesus, that the life

1019. also of Jesus might be made manifest in

1020. our body. For we who live have been

1021. delivered unto death, death works in us,

1022. but life in you. We have the same spirit

1023. according and I believe therefore I have

1024. spoken. Therefore, I speak knowing that

1025. he who raised up the Lord shall raise up

1026. up Jesus and he will be present with

1027. you. So Paul got through life by knowing

1028. that he was going to be resurrected by

1029. the same power that brought Jesus out of

1030. the grave. So you know our work and our

1031. labor is alongside the Lord's. And uh

1032. Paul groaned, remember he he says that

1033. over here in verse two, for in this we

  1034. groan,

  1035. you know, and

  1036. groaning is, you know, it's it's a it's

1037. here. It is a Greek word. It's it means

  1038. to be moved.

1039. It means to be moved. Paul says, I I I'm

  1040. moved,

1041. you know, about these things.

1042. And Jesus in in John chapter 11 when he

    John 11 chapter mention

1043. was at the he was at the grave of

1044. Lazarus it says there that he groaned

  1045. within himself.

1046. So you know these are circumstances that

1047. caused these men to groan.

1048. Jesus a dead man. Paul here about

1049. thinking about the ministry and being in

1050. this with God. uh it was so important uh

1051. for Paul and we saw those things back

  1052. there in chapter 6

1053. and um you know our work and our labors

1054. alongside the Lord and uh we want to do

1055. it his way and remember the wedding

  1056. feast in Canaan.

1057. You remember what Mary said

1058. to everyone at the wedding feast.

  1059. Whatever Jesus says, do.

1060. And that's who we are. You know,

1061. whatever Jesus says, we got to do. And

  1062. there's just a blessedness in obeying

1063. him. And we're not listening to men.

1064. We're listening to God because he is

  1065. God.

1066. Jeremiah 9:27 says, "But let him," this

1067. is from the head of the church, "but let

1068. him who glories glory in this, that he

  1069. knows and understands me,

1070. that I am the Lord. I exercise loving

  1071. kindness, judgment, and righteousness

1072. in the earth." So when we rejoice, we

1073. rejoice that our name is written down in

1074. the book of life. rejoice for this great

1075. salvation that God has given to us. And

1076. uh you know the apostles had an excuse

1077. uh didn't they back in Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

1078. Turn to Luke 10 and I'll quit.

  1079. Luke chapter 10

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  1080. and verse 17.

1081. This happened to them. And the 70

1082. returned again with joy, saying, Lord,

1083. that even the demons were subject unto

1084. us because of your name.

1085. And Jesus said, I beheld Satan as

1086. lightning. Behold, I give you unto you

1087. power to tread on serpents and

1088. scorpions, and over all power of the

1089. enemy, and nothing shall by any means

  1090. hurt you. Notwithstanding

1091. uh in this, rejoice not that the spirits

1092. were subject unto you, but rather

1093. rejoice because your name is written

  1094. down in heaven. So that's that's a very

1095. important thing for us to know that

  1096. we're saved. That's that's more

1097. important than anything that we are born

1098. again. By the way, Judas is in that

1099. crowd at 70 that come back and said that

1100. all all these great things and Jesus

1101. said this, you know, Judas was in this

  1102. crowd

  1103. as well.

1104. So, we ask ourselves is our name written

  1105. down in heaven?

1106. If it is, it's there because God put it

1107. there. It's there because Christ died

1108. for our sins according to the scripture

1109. and we've been born again by faith and

1110. we trust in him and his work and not any

1111. work of our own. Let's close in prayer.

1112. Father, we thank you for this day and we

1113. thank you for your word

1114. and father it is your word and

1115. we need to hear it, listen to it and do

1116. it. And we thank you for showing to us

1117. the passion of your son upon the

1118. multitude and had a great effect upon

1119. the apostles and the disciples and the

1120. apostle Paul as well. And we know you

1121. want your church to be busy about your

1122. business. So we just pray for our

  1123. missionaries

1124. and our outreach here as well that we

1125. might be busy doing these things,

1126. Father. And uh be occupied with the

1127. glory of God. That's what this is. That

1128. the ministry is the glory of God. The

1129. word of God is the glory of God. Your

  1130. purposes, your plans.

1131. Thank you that we can be a part of it.

1132. And we pray in Jesus name. Amen.

1133. Lord, as we go from this place,

  1134. loving you more,

  1135. trusting you more.

1136. May the power of your love and the light

  1137. of your word shine

1138. to a sin, darkened world.

1139. As we go from this place,
