  1. Morning. Wow, I didn't expect an actual answer. Thank you.

  2. My name is Ed, as Sean explained. I'm a pastoral intern here. If you haven't

  3. gotten a chance to meet me, if I haven't gotten a chance to meet you,

  4. it's my joy and privilege to share with you a message that I actually prepared this time.

  5. On John 3, verses 16 to 21, as we continue on in our Advent series in the book of John.

    John 3:16–21

  6. So please turn with me in your Bibles to John 3, 16 to 21. If you don't have a Bible and would like

  7. one, please don't be shy. Just raise your hand up really high and one of our greeters can go and get

  8. you one. Again, that's John 3, 16 to 21. Let's pray before we get into the text.

  9. Heavenly Father, God, I am your humble servant.

  10. I plead and I ask that you would use me as your steward. I would only say the things that you

  11. want me to say, that I wouldn't add anything to your word or take anything away from it.

  12. God, you would give me the heart today that is more concerned with what these people think of you

  13. than think of me. Would our eyes be on you, Christ, today? Be magnified, be glorified, be

  14. treasured, be Jurітьwild? As you so rightly deserves. Give us eyes to see, hearts to understand that

  15. area olduğ Nós temos to understand the breadth, the length, the depth, the width of your

  16. love that surpasses knowledge.

  17. God, help us today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  18. Let's stand, if you are able, for the reading of God's word.

  19. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

  20. I'm going to read that again.

  21. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

  22. For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  23. Whoever believes in him is not condemned.

  24. But whoever does not believe is condemned already because he has not believed in the name of the only son of God.

  25. And this is the judgment.

  26. The light has come into the world.

  27. People love the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

  28. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light lest his works should be exposed.

  29. But whoever does what is true comes to the light so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.

  30. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  31. You may be seated.

  32. John 3.16 has to be one of, if not the most widely known verses in the entire Bible.

  33. For many of you, it very well might be your favorite verse.

  34. It's not without good reason as Martin Luther, the famous performer, has called it the heart of the Bible, the gospel in miniature.

  35. John 3.16 is the number one popular verse on Bible Gateway every year.

  36. It's on bumper stickers, posters, mugs, children's arts and crafts, even athletes' tattoos.

  37. But the danger of its popularity is that it can be so commonplace that we lose the wonder of this beautiful truth.

  38. Back a few years, I have a memory of walking past some Christians in New York City who are evangelizing in the street,

  39. who held up these big posters that just said John 3.16 on it.

  40. And they were saying to the people passing by,

  41. God loves you.

  42. God really loves you.

  43. And I don't know, maybe I was in a sour mood that day.

  44. Maybe I was just still in a cage stage of being a Calvinist, meaning that I really should have been locked up in a cage.

  45. But I remember not being encouraged or challenged, but instead of my immaturity, I'm ashamed to say I scoffed at them,

  46. thinking that I graduated to some greater, wiser theology than just saying God loves you.

  47. And I said to myself, how elementary.

  48. Do they really know what they're saying?

  49. And really, if I'm honest in my heart of hearts, I'm ashamed to say that I was really thinking God doesn't love these sinners.

  50. But as I was praying and prepping for the sermon, I'm reminded of that time and realized how much more biblically and theologically correct that they were with those simple words.

  51. That we never graduate from this verse in John 3.16.

  52. So my prayer today is that our Heavenly Father would show us again the profound, unbelievable truth that God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,

  53. that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

  54. So today we'll break down our passage of John 3.16 to 21 into three simple points.

  55. Talk about the love of God.

  56. Then we'll talk about the Son of God.

  57. And then finally, our belief in God.

  58. To begin to understand the context of our passage today, we read earlier in the chapter that Jesus is speaking to Nicodemus,

  59. who was a ruler of the Jews.

  60. This Nicodemus had come to Jesus to speak and learn from him.

  61. And he did this by night in fear of getting caught by the rest of the Jewish leaders,

  62. who, let's say, would be not the happiest to find out that Nicodemus was doing this.

  63. It's to this man with all the stature and accolades in this Jewish society to whom Jesus teaches that their Heavenly Father loves the world,

  64. the entire world.

  65. And to understand the full weight of this claim to Nicodemus, let me give you some words that Jesus did not choose to say here.

  66. Jesus did not say to Nicodemus, the Jewish leader, that God loved Israel.

  67. It was common Jewish belief at the time that God loved Israel and then opposed the rest of the Gentile world.

  68. Back then, they must have held closely to their hearts like in Isaiah 43, in which God says this to Israel.

  69. But Jesus teaches Nicodemus, the law-abiding Jew, that God loves the world with no strings attached,

  70. no prerequisites, any race, any history, regardless of whether they upheld the holy standards of God's laws.

  71. And in this moment, Jesus is teaching Nicodemus that God loves the Samaritans,

  72. the half-blooded Jews from the diaspora that Jews despised and strongly disagreed on matters regarding the proper worship of God.

  73. Samaritans, because of their history, were originally part of Israel.

  74. But they ended up developing a synchronistic religion, taking parts of Judaism and idolatrous Canaanite practices.

  75. And so tensions often ran high between these two groups.

  76. Jesus also teaches here that God loves the Romans, Israel's governing authority at the time,

  77. who to the Jewish eye practice such abominable, grotesque acts of polytheistic idol worship.

  78. For us today, Jesus did not say that God loved the church or the righteous, which of course is included,

  79. but again, the entire world.

  80. This broken and evil world is the object of God's love and affection.

  81. Friends, do you really understand?

  82. Do you comprehend the awesome width of God's love?

  83. Just compare your love and your heart with God's for a second.

  84. Do you see how big God's heart is?

  85. And just how small our own hearts are?

  86. It's not hard to see in our own hearts if we're honest with ourselves that there are people,

  87. there are groups of people in our lives and in this world that we don't love, that we look down on.

  88. To those who are rude to service workers.

  89. To the selfish and arrogant who need to control every conversation.

  90. To the racists who commit hate crimes.

  91. To those who've deeply hurt us and scarred us in our past.

  92. To those who openly mock and scorn the idea of a God.

  93. Scripture teaches us that God the Father loves even these.

  94. And this love is completely unmerited, completely free.

  95. This love is given on God's initiative, His own prerogative.

  96. And just sitting in this verse the past couple weeks,

  97. I have to say that this measure of love that God has just astounds me.

  98. How, God?

  99. How?

  100. How can you love this idol-worshiping, foul-mouthed, untrusting, dishonorous, murderous, adulterous,

  101. stealing, lying, coveting, sin-stained people?

  102. How can you love this messiness?

  103. And how can you love me?

  104. Just look at the news on an average week.

  105. It can be depressing.

  106. Thinking about the status of our unlovable world.

  107. And it's to these people that have made such a mess of this world that we live in.

  108. And yet God says that He loves us.

  109. But, but wait, hold up.

  110. Does this mean that God actually condones the sin of this world?

  111. That He approves of our folly?

  112. How should we understand John 3, 16 with passages like 1 John 2, 15-16?

  113. Where the same author, John, he writes of the world.

  114. And he uses the same Greek word for world in our passage today like this.

  115. He says,

  116. Do not love the world.

  117. Do not love the world or the things in the world.

  118. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  119. For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and pride of life

  120. is not from the Father, but is from the world.

  121. This passage says, if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  122. But then John 3, 16 says, God loves the world.

  123. Does Scripture contradict itself here?

  124. Just looking at the rest of our passage today, we can clearly see no.

  125. This love that God has for this wayward world is not one that approves of sin.

  126. And it's not just disapproval.

  127. But the sobering truth is that God will punish unrepentant sin by condemning,

  128. by condemning these people to hell.

  129. In fact, we read in verse 18 that those who do not believe in Jesus Christ stand condemned already.

  130. Later on in chapter 3, in a parallel statement to 3, 16 to 17,

  131. verse 36 further shows that the wrath of God remains on him.

  132. You don't have to wait until judgment day to know what your final verdict is

  133. if you are not putting your faith in Jesus today.

  134. Neither God nor the biblical authors are blind to the folly of this world.

  135. That's precisely why John says in 1 John,

  136. to turn away from all worldly systems and sin that go against God's kingdom.

  137. But if God doesn't approve of the world's sin,

  138. how can John say that God loves the world in our passage here today then?

  139. I think it's helpful to really understand how we ourselves tend to use the word love

  140. in different ways, very freely, very naturally.

  141. We say that we love this and we love that.

  142. If I say to you that I love cheeseburgers and I love my wife,

  143. I hope you would assume that I don't have the same exact kind of love

  144. for both cheeseburgers and my wife Christine.

  145. One is clearly a deeper, more heartfelt love.

  146. In the same ways...

  147. For cheeseburgers...

  148. No, I'm just kidding.

  149. I thought about making that joke, but I've refrained from it.

  150. But...

  151. In the same way, Scripture speaks of God's general love for the world,

  152. but also a deeper, more heartfelt, intimate love that God has for his own children.

  153. Staying in the book of John, we read Jesus saying in chapter 17,

  154. For I have given them, them being all who have believed and all who will come to believe in Christ,

  155. the words that you gave me and they have received them,

  156. and they have come to know in truth that I came for you.

  157. And they have believed that you have sent me.

  158. I am praying for them.

  159. I am not praying for the world, but for those whom you have given me.

  160. They are yours.

  161. Jesus says that he's praying specifically for God's children who have faith in him.

  162. So they enjoy a specific love and unique privileges of being in Christ.

  163. And it's not uncommon for Scripture to present God's love like this.

  164. For example, through the prophet Jeremiah, God indicts and rebukes the nation of Moab.

  165. He says this,

  166. Let Moab wallow in her vomit.

  167. Let her be an object of ridicule.

  168. Moab will be destroyed as a nation because she's defied the Lord.

  169. But at the same time, through the same prophet,

  170. In the same chapter, God's heart recoils within him.

  171. And he says,

  172. Therefore, I will wail.

  173. I wail over Moab.

  174. For all Moab I cry out.

  175. So my heart laments for Moab like a flute.

  176. So while it's true that the Bible teaches that God has a special love for his chosen, his faithful,

  177. and that he doesn't condone the world's sin,

  178. we mustn't let go of any of Scripture's teaching that God does love the world.

  179. We have to hold on to that biblical tension faithfully.

  180. And my earlier analogy that I used fails here because God's love for the world is greater than my own trivial love for cheeseburgers.

  181. Peter writes in 2 Peter 3-9,

  182. God does not wish for any to perish.

  183. That's not mere sentimentality.

  184. That is God's genuine love for the world.

  185. That's exactly why he commissions us to go and make disciples of all and every nation, every people group.

  186. That's God's heart for us to be saved.

  187. And we ourselves should be thankful.

  188. We should praise God for this amazing truth.

  189. Because every one of us Christians, we are part of this evil world.

  190. We were dead in our sins.

  191. Dead in our trespasses.

  192. That all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  193. But at some point in all our testimonies, the simple truth captured in three simple words.

  194. God loves you.

  195. Was the catalyst to your radically transformed lives.

  196. Sure, you're not perfect now.

  197. But before, you wanted nothing to do with God.

  198. You didn't care for living for him, to be pleasing to him, to die to yourselves.

  199. But now, by grace, you want more of Jesus.

  200. Even if you don't feel that right this moment, you still want to want him.

  201. You're a new creation.

  202. The old is gone.

  203. The new has come.

  204. So, brothers and sisters, be absolutely biblically and theologically confident that you can say,

  205. for the broken and lost in your life, God loves you.

  206. God really loves you.

  207. That is a biblical truth that we can absolutely be assured of.

  208. For a lot of the people that we may evangelize to,

  209. because of their past sins, or the distance from the church, or whatever reason,

  210. many have a tendency to believe the lie that God must hate them,

  211. that God doesn't want anything to do with them.

  212. That is not what scripture teaches.

  213. This Christmas season, wherever you are, whoever you're celebrating with,

  214. may this be the greatest gift you bring them.

  215. For the invitation to come to believe in Christ is universal.

  216. It's open to everyone.

  217. No matter who you are, what you've done.

  218. Of course, don't just stop at God loves you,

  219. leaving them with the impression that they don't have anything to change.

  220. But instead, we must lead them to repentance from sin and idolatry.

  221. But still, it's God's love.

  222. It's God's love and kindness that lead us to repentance.

  223. The modern definition of love has been reduced down to full acceptance or approval of someone's actions.

  224. The common sentiment is that the most loving thing to say is just,

  225. you do you.

  226. But just like a father of a son who's losing his path,

  227. who's squandering away his life,

  228. a genuine fatherly love doesn't just say, you do you.

  229. And condones of the child's behavior,

  230. but instead longs for him to change, to grow,

  231. to come to an experience, an abundant life.

  232. And church, I know that there are those in your life that you so earnestly desire

  233. to come and see the grace of Christ

  234. and the love of God

  235. for your parents, children,

  236. siblings, grandparents, your best friends.

  237. I know you've poured out your tearful prayers,

  238. pleading the Lord to save these.

  239. John 3.16 shows us that you are not alone

  240. in your love for them.

  241. God the Father loves them too.

  242. Let us continue to wait in this Advent season

  243. for Jesus to come to change their hearts.

  244. Let us persevere in praying earnestly

  245. that as D.L. Moody,

  246. the American evangelist in the 1800s,

  247. has once described the gates of heaven,

  248. that they would read from the outside

  249. the words,

  250. whosoever will may come.

  251. And after being compelled by the love of the Father,

  252. that they walk in

  253. and they read on the other side,

  254. chosen,

  255. chosen before the foundation of the world.

  256. If you have yet to put your faith in Jesus

  257. and you've joined us today,

  258. well, on behalf of our entire church,

  259. we just want to say we're so happy

  260. and excited that you joined us today.

  261. Honestly, I think there is really a short list

  262. of things that are more exciting

  263. than on a Sunday morning to see you join us.

  264. And if it's your first time in a while

  265. to come to church,

  266. you might have a lot of questions.

  267. Please, please come talk to us.

  268. Learn more about this historical faith

  269. and person of Jesus.

  270. And if there's anything that I pray

  271. you leave this sermon with,

  272. is that you know God loves you.

  273. He created you in love.

  274. He longs for you in love.

  275. That is his posture towards you.

  276. We pray that you would come

  277. and see that his faithful love

  278. is better than life itself.

  279. And you might ask,

  280. well, that all sounds well and good,

  281. but how do I know that God loves me?

  282. Well, I thought you'd never ask.

  283. Come to our second observation

  284. in that God so loved the world

  285. that in this way,

  286. he gave his only son.

  287. Wait, wait what?

  288. Does God have a son?

  289. Muslims would hear that and scoff.

  290. Protest.

  291. How lowly of God

  292. to have a physical relationship

  293. with Mary,

  294. have a son in Jesus.

  295. Greeks might be reminded

  296. of their Olympian gods

  297. like Zeus and his demigod offspring.

  298. Even throughout church history,

  299. people have often struggled

  300. with making sense of what this means,

  301. as shown by the need

  302. for the councils of Nicaea

  303. in 325 A.D.

  304. and Chalcedon in 451 A.D.

  305. that dispelled heresies

  306. about this very doctrine.

  307. So what is it,

  308. what does the Bible teach us

  309. about this given title

  310. of son of God?

  311. Well, Jesus' birth narratives

  312. in both Matthew and Luke

  313. make it clear that Jesus

  314. is not literally God's son

  315. in the sense that he had

  316. a physical relationship

  317. with a woman,

  318. as is common in pagan literature.

  319. Instead, the title of son

  320. in our passage today

  321. is being used the same way

  322. that the ancient world

  323. used this idiom

  324. of being the son of X.

  325. Being called the son of something

  326. or someone

  327. was a way of signifying likeness.

  328. Since back then,

  329. it was thought that a son

  330. would so closely resemble his father,

  331. like his attributes,

  332. back then his occupation.

  333. Renowned New Testament scholar

  334. D.A. Carson is helpful here.

  335. As he explained,

  336. being called a son of worthlessness

  337. was an extremely harsh criticism

  338. because it didn't signify

  339. that your parents were worthless,

  340. but that you yourself

  341. were so worthless,

  342. you must have come

  343. from such a worthless family.

  344. This definition of a biblical idiom

  345. helps because Jesus, in fact,

  346. is not the only person

  347. in all of Scripture

  348. to be called son of God

  349. in Scripture.

  350. For example,

  351. we find that Adam,

  352. Israel, David,

  353. peacemakers in the Beatitudes,

  354. even angels,

  355. are all referred to as

  356. a son or sons of God.

  357. So in each use,

  358. in some way,

  359. these people

  360. are all reflecting

  361. at least some attribute,

  362. one specific attribute of God.

  363. Adam is called

  364. the son of God

  365. in the genealogy

  366. in the beginning of Luke

  367. because,

  368. like the rest of humanity,

  369. we are all made

  370. in the image of God.

  371. We mirror God

  372. by just being made

  373. in his image.

  374. In the Beatitudes,

  375. when Jesus says,

  376. blessed are the peacemakers,

  377. for they shall be called

  378. the sons of God.

  379. When we make peace

  380. among our relationships here,

  381. when we pass the peace

  382. as we do every Sunday,

  383. we reflect that same

  384. peacemaking attribute

  385. of the Father.

  386. So we are bestowed

  387. that same title

  388. of a son or daughter

  389. of God.

  390. But in our passage today,

  391. it says that God

  392. so loved the world

  393. that he gave his

  394. only son.

  395. Meaning that Jesus

  396. is uniquely God's son.

  397. in the sense that

  398. only Jesus embodies

  399. the exact fullness

  400. of the Father.

  401. Hebrews 1, 3 says,

  402. the son is the radiance

  403. of God's glory,

  404. the exact representation

  405. of his being.

  406. In other words,

  407. Jesus is equal

  408. to the Father.

  409. Jewish leaders

  410. understood this phrase too

  411. in John 5

  412. for John writes,

  413. this was why the Jews

  414. were seeking all the more

  415. to kill him

  416. because not only

  417. was he breaking

  418. the Sabbath,

  419. but he was calling God

  420. his own Father,

  421. making himself

  422. equal with God.

  423. The Gospel of John

  424. in many places

  425. makes it clear

  426. that the Father

  427. dearly loves the Son.

  428. For example,

  429. verse 35

  430. in chapter 3

  431. later says,

  432. the Father loves the Son

  433. and has given

  434. all things into his hand.

  435. Moreover,

  436. this title

  437. of Son of God

  438. is so biblically rich

  439. and multilayered

  440. and just as a side note,

  441. it's a great case study

  442. of why Christians

  443. gain so much

  444. by understanding

  445. all of Scripture

  446. because you just see

  447. the astounding beauty

  448. of how

  449. all 66 books

  450. of the Bible

  451. across 40 different

  452. plus authors

  453. just mesh.

  454. Nicodemus might have

  455. heard this title

  456. of Son of God

  457. and likely connected

  458. this to the foretold

  459. king who would

  460. fulfill God's promise

  461. in David,

  462. to David

  463. in 2 Samuel 7.

  464. Here,

  465. God promised David

  466. that he would

  467. raise up an offspring

  468. after him

  469. who would establish

  470. the throne

  471. of his line,

  472. his kingdom,

  473. forever.

  474. God promised to David

  475. that I will be

  476. to him a father

  477. and he shall be

  478. to me a son.

  479. I will establish

  480. the throne

  481. of his kingdom

  482. forever.

  483. And when you're

  484. reading through

  485. 2 Samuel 7,

  486. if your nose

  487. is trained for it,

  488. you can just smell

  489. the aroma of Christ

  490. all over that passage.

  491. How would

  492. a biological

  493. descendant of

  494. David

  495. eternally reign?

  496. Unless, of course,

  497. he is the divine.

  498. Now, this idea

  499. that David's

  500. biological descendant

  501. would be the

  502. coming Messiah

  503. is not just spoken

  504. to David,

  505. but this idea

  506. is propagated

  507. to other Old Testament

  508. prophets,

  509. as Isaiah 9

  510. so beautifully puts it,

  511. and I think I have

  512. this up here.

  513. For to us

  514. a child is born,

  515. to us a son

  516. is given,

  517. and the government

  518. shall be upon

  519. his shoulder,

  520. and his name

  521. shall be called

  522. Wonderful Counselor,

  523. Mighty God,

  524. Everlasting Father,

  525. Prince of Peace.

  526. Of the increase

  527. of his government

  528. and of peace,

  529. there will be no end.

  530. on the throne

  531. of David

  532. and over his kingdom

  533. to establish it

  534. and to uphold it.

  535. Jesus is God's

  536. only son,

  537. the sent

  538. and prophesied

  539. Messiah,

  540. the one to take over

  541. David's

  542. eternal throne.

  543. He is

  544. Wonderful Counselor,

  545. Mighty God,

  546. Everlasting Father,

  547. and the Prince

  548. of Peace.

  549. And for the

  550. biological son

  551. of David

  552. who would have

  553. the title

  554. of Everlasting Father,

  555. the faithful

  556. Israelites waited.

  557. And it's this waiting

  558. that characterizes

  559. this Advent season

  560. that we celebrate

  561. together with the rest

  562. of the global church.

  563. To be honest,

  564. I really never understood

  565. the significance

  566. or the importance

  567. of celebrating Advent

  568. really prior to

  569. prepping the sermon.

  570. And I know

  571. maybe some of us

  572. feel similarly.

  573. So,

  574. so for those

  575. of us

  576. who are unfamiliar

  577. with Advent

  578. or the four weeks

  579. leading up to Christmas,

  580. Advent,

  581. which the word

  582. itself is derived

  583. from the Latin word

  584. which means

  585. coming,

  586. and Christmas

  587. specifically became

  588. associated with

  589. the winter solstice,

  590. the day in which

  591. we have the

  592. shortest day

  593. and the longest

  594. night of the year

  595. in the northern

  596. hemisphere.

  597. And that just feels

  598. poetically fitting,

  599. right?

  600. That the light

  601. of the world

  602. is born on the

  603. darkest day.

  604. Just like the saints

  605. before Jesus'

  606. first coming

  607. who are waiting

  608. for the light

  609. to come,

  610. we also find

  611. ourselves waiting.

  612. Because for us

  613. today,

  614. who now live

  615. between Christ's

  616. first and second

  617. coming,

  618. this Advent season

  619. really has a dual

  620. meaning.

  621. We celebrate

  622. that Christ

  623. has come

  624. to take away

  625. the sins

  626. of this world.

  627. And we,

  628. along with the

  629. rest of creation,

  630. we still wait.

  631. We wait together

  632. for Christ

  633. to come again

  634. and to make

  635. this wrong world

  636. right.

  637. To make our own

  638. sinful hearts

  639. right.

  640. As the 20th century

  641. Christian martyr

  642. Diedrich Bonhoeffer

  643. said,

  644. the celebration

  645. of Advent

  646. is possible

  647. only to those

  648. who are troubled

  649. in soul,

  650. who know

  651. themselves

  652. to be poor

  653. and imperfect

  654. and who look

  655. forward to

  656. something greater

  657. to come.

  658. To the broken

  659. and contrite,

  660. to those longing

  661. for something

  662. greater to come,

  663. only then

  664. will Christmas

  665. take its full

  666. meaning.

  667. So during this

  668. Christmas season,

  669. with these reminders

  670. to wait for Christ,

  671. the question begs,

  672. what are you waiting

  673. for in your life?

  674. Who are you waiting

  675. for?

  676. If you can believe

  677. it, it's already

  678. almost the new year.

  679. 2023 is soon coming

  680. and I know that

  681. many of us have

  682. very exciting plans

  683. and expectations

  684. for this new year.

  685. Like going on

  686. vacations,

  687. getting married,

  688. finishing school,

  689. maybe having children.

  690. All amazing blessings

  691. from God.

  692. God, and while

  693. 2023 might still

  694. be the best year

  695. of our lives,

  696. and I pray it is,

  697. I can still make

  698. one promise to you.

  699. It won't fulfill

  700. your greatest longing.

  701. Whatever event

  702. or milestone

  703. that you're waiting

  704. for,

  705. it won't be

  706. everything

  707. that you've been

  708. waiting for.

  709. We celebrate Advent

  710. each year

  711. as a simple reminder

  712. of what

  713. and of who

  714. we're waiting

  715. for,

  716. who all

  717. of creation

  718. is waiting

  719. for.

  720. We are waiting

  721. for the Christ.

  722. Understanding

  723. the weight

  724. and the gravitas

  725. of the title

  726. of Son of God

  727. and how the saints

  728. have longed

  729. for him to come,

  730. we see now

  731. how much God

  732. so loved

  733. the world.

  734. We can often

  735. read that word

  736. so,

  737. thinking that this

  738. signifies the quantity,

  739. the amount of God's

  740. love for the world,

  741. and that he loved

  742. the world so much.

  743. But this word

  744. is actually used

  745. as verse 14,

  746. uses it just

  747. a little earlier.

  748. Verse 14 says,

  749. as Moses lifted up

  750. the serpent

  751. in the wilderness,

  752. so must

  753. the Son of Man

  754. be lifted up.

  755. This word so

  756. is more about

  757. in which way

  758. or how

  759. God loves

  760. the world.

  761. This love

  762. wasn't reserved

  763. to just a feeling,

  764. as our modern society

  765. so often defines

  766. love,

  767. but he loved

  768. the world

  769. by taking

  770. the physical,

  771. tangible,

  772. historical action

  773. of the giving

  774. of his only Son.

  775. And we know

  776. that God

  777. did not send

  778. his Son

  779. into the world

  780. to condemn

  781. the world,

  782. but in order

  783. that the world

  784. might be saved

  785. through him,

  786. as verse 17 says.

  787. This loving act

  788. of the giving

  789. of the Son of God

  790. is again parallel

  791. to verse 14,

  792. in which Jesus

  793. refers to

  794. Numbers 21,

  795. 4-9,

  796. where the Israelites

  797. once again,

  798. they complain,

  799. as they always do.

  800. They complain

  801. of their preferred

  802. food and drink,

  803. called the miraculous

  804. manna,

  805. worthless food.

  806. So,

  807. God sends

  808. fiery serpents

  809. that would bite

  810. the Israelites

  811. so that they

  812. would die.

  813. But after

  814. they cry out

  815. for help,

  816. God commands

  817. Moses to make

  818. a bronze figurine

  819. of the serpent

  820. and teaches

  821. those who are

  822. bitten to look

  823. upon the serpent

  824. as he lifts it

  825. and live.

  826. And so now

  827. you remember

  828. the details

  829. of the story,

  830. but let's just

  831. imagine that

  832. you were there.

  833. Just imagine

  834. that you were

  835. one of the voices

  836. crying out

  837. in the rebellion

  838. against Moses

  839. and God,

  840. just letting

  841. your anger

  842. get the best

  843. of you.

  844. You're angry,

  845. you have to

  846. eat this manna

  847. one more time.

  848. So you're

  849. complaining

  850. and grumbling

  851. before Moses

  852. and now others

  853. are now joining

  854. in on that

  855. grumbling.

  856. The crowd

  857. just gets

  858. larger

  859. and angrier

  860. and angrier

  861. and then

  862. from a distance

  863. you hear

  864. petrifying

  865. screams of terror

  866. among the people.

  867. You dart

  868. your eyes

  869. around,

  870. see what's

  871. the cause

  872. and then

  873. you see

  874. there are

  875. snakes.

  876. There are

  877. snakes slithering

  878. around and

  879. they're biting

  880. the people

  881. around you.

  882. Many of your

  883. own neighbors,

  884. family members,

  885. friends are

  886. getting bitten

  887. and you see

  888. them eventually

  889. drop dead.

  890. While terrified,

  891. you're trying

  892. to now avoid

  893. the crawling

  894. snakes.

  895. and right

  896. when you

  897. think you're

  898. in the clear,

  899. one fastens

  900. its fangs

  901. into your thigh

  902. and you know

  903. what's going

  904. to happen next.

  905. Terrified,

  906. you look around

  907. to see if there's

  908. anything to be

  909. done.

  910. Then you hear

  911. Moses praying

  912. and you look

  913. and he's lifting

  914. up a bronze

  915. figurine of a

  916. serpent.

  917. What a strange

  918. sight.

  919. But he yells

  920. that all who

  921. are bitten

  922. look and live.

  923. So knowing

  924. you have no

  925. other options.

  926. You trust in

  927. the power of

  928. that simple

  929. statue to save.

  930. You look.

  931. You desperately

  932. look.

  933. And you don't

  934. move your eyes

  935. off of the

  936. serpent.

  937. By the grace

  938. of God,

  939. you survive.

  940. You survive

  941. the bite.

  942. In the same

  943. way,

  944. God gave

  945. his only

  946. son,

  947. his beloved

  948. son,

  949. to be lifted

  950. up on the

  951. cross to bear

  952. the agonizing

  953. suffering of

  954. drinking whole,

  955. the cup of

  956. wrath from

  957. the father,

  958. so that all

  959. who are

  960. bitten by

  961. our own

  962. fiery serpents,

  963. bitten by

  964. the pangs

  965. of sin,

  966. that we

  967. can look

  968. upon the

  969. lifted son

  970. of God,

  971. the preeminent

  972. Christ,

  973. and we can

  974. live.

  975. You see,

  976. this is a

  977. life or

  978. death situation.

  979. This is a

  980. life or

  981. death situation.

  982. Your eternity

  983. is on the

  984. line.

  985. So look,

  986. look and

  987. live.

  988. find your

  989. life in

  990. the lifted

  991. lamb of

  992. God.

  993. That's what

  994. it means to

  995. believe in

  996. him so that

  997. you won't

  998. perish but

  999. have eternal

  1000. life as we

  1001. come to the

  1002. final point of

  1003. our sermon.

  1004. For the

  1005. son of God,

  1006. God incarnate,

  1007. laid down his

  1008. precious life,

  1009. crushed and

  1010. cursed so all

  1011. who would live,

  1012. all who would

  1013. look and

  1014. believe,

  1015. would not perish

  1016. under the

  1017. terrible weight

  1018. wrath of the

  1019. father.

  1020. But we

  1021. could spend

  1022. eternity in

  1023. loving,

  1024. perfect

  1025. communion with

  1026. God in

  1027. heaven.

  1028. Brothers and

  1029. sisters,

  1030. this is one

  1031. thing we

  1032. cannot lose.

  1033. We must

  1034. fight for

  1035. is the

  1036. wonder of

  1037. Christ's

  1038. condescension.

  1039. This is a

  1040. long quote,

  1041. but I think

  1042. it's helpful.

  1043. Charles Spurgeon,

  1044. a pastor in

  1045. the 1800s,

  1046. often called

  1047. the prince of

  1048. preachers,

  1049. preachers,

  1050. spoke of

  1051. the

  1052. strong

  1053. servant and

  1054. of Christ

  1055. in this

  1056. way.

  1057. Some wise

  1058. one said,

  1059. why was it a

  1060. serpent that

  1061. did the

  1062. mischief?

  1063. How can a

  1064. serpent undo

  1065. it?

  1066. Yes, and

  1067. men will say

  1068. it was by

  1069. man that

  1070. sin and

  1071. death came

  1072. into the

  1073. world.

  1074. Can a

  1075. man be the

  1076. means of

  1077. our salvation?

  1078. Ah, says

  1079. another, having

  1080. the prejudice

  1081. of a Jew

  1082. about him,

  1083. and what a

  1084. man he was,

  1085. no king,

  1086. no prince,

  1087. no mighty

  1088. conqueror.

  1089. He was but

  1090. a poor

  1091. peasant, and

  1092. he died upon

  1093. the cross.

  1094. Ah, so

  1095. said some

  1096. in the

  1097. camp, they

  1098. said it

  1099. was only a

  1100. bronze serpent,

  1101. not even a

  1102. golden one.

  1103. And how

  1104. could a

  1105. bronze serpent

  1106. be of use

  1107. to them?

  1108. We're not

  1109. selling for

  1110. much if it

  1111. were broken

  1112. up.

  1113. What was

  1114. the use

  1115. of it?

  1116. And so

  1117. men say

  1118. of Christ,

  1119. he is

  1120. despised and

  1121. rejected of

  1122. man.

  1123. A man of

  1124. sorrows and

  1125. acquainted with

  1126. grief.

  1127. And they

  1128. hide their

  1129. faces from

  1130. him because

  1131. they cannot

  1132. see how he

  1133. has adapted

  1134. for their

  1135. cure.

  1136. Just

  1137. understanding the

  1138. title and the

  1139. son of God

  1140. earlier now

  1141. helps us see

  1142. that God

  1143. withheld

  1144. absolutely

  1145. nothing in

  1146. the sending

  1147. of his only

  1148. son.

  1149. How many

  1150. gods,

  1151. how many

  1152. gods have

  1153. you heard

  1154. do this?

  1155. How many

  1156. kings give

  1157. up their

  1158. own sons

  1159. for rebellious

  1160. people?

  1161. How many

  1162. lords step

  1163. down from

  1164. their thrones

  1165. to wash

  1166. his servants

  1167. feet?

  1168. I come

  1169. back to

  1170. this verse

  1171. again and

  1172. again,

  1173. but Romans

  1174. 8.32

  1175. brings us

  1176. to such

  1177. an amazing,

  1178. unbelievable

  1179. truth.

  1180. He who

  1181. did not

  1182. spare his

  1183. own son,

  1184. but gave

  1185. him up for

  1186. us all,

  1187. how will he

  1188. not also

  1189. with him

  1190. graciously

  1191. give us

  1192. all things?

  1193. Do you

  1194. guys get

  1195. the logic

  1196. of that

  1197. verse?

  1198. Our

  1199. heavenly

  1200. father gave

  1201. the absolute

  1202. highest price

  1203. that he could

  1204. pay,

  1205. his precious

  1206. own son,

  1207. with whom

  1208. he enjoyed

  1209. love and

  1210. communion from

  1211. eternity

  1212. past.

  1213. So if he

  1214. gave him up

  1215. for you,

  1216. what other

  1217. good thing

  1218. that is so

  1219. much smaller

  1220. than Jesus?

  1221. What would

  1222. he withhold

  1223. from us?

  1224. This

  1225. father,

  1226. he gave

  1227. his son,

  1228. his only

  1229. son for

  1230. you.

  1231. So brothers

  1232. and sisters,

  1233. we mustn't

  1234. look to our

  1235. circumstances

  1236. then to

  1237. evaluate God's

  1238. love for us,

  1239. or else we'll

  1240. just get

  1241. spiritual

  1242. whiplash

  1243. looking back

  1244. and forth.

  1245. I know

  1246. how easy

  1247. it is to

  1248. do this.

  1249. We think

  1250. I got

  1251. promoted at

  1252. work.

  1253. God must

  1254. love me.

  1255. I got

  1256. diagnosed

  1257. with a

  1258. debilitating

  1259. illness.

  1260. God

  1261. doesn't love

  1262. me.

  1263. I got

  1264. engaged.

  1265. God must

  1266. love me.

  1267. love me.

  1268. God

  1269. loves me.

  1270. God

  1271. loves me.

  1272. God

  1273. loves me.

  1274. God

  1275. loves me.

  1276. God doesn't

  1277. love me.

  1278. I got a

  1279. clean bill of

  1280. health.

  1281. God loves me.

  1282. My marriage

  1283. is struggling.

  1284. God

  1285. doesn't love me.

  1286. And so the cycle

  1287. can go on and

  1288. on and on.

  1289. Instead, we must

  1290. look to the

  1291. cross.

  1292. cross.

  1293. St.

  1294. Augustine, the

  1295. great theologian

  1296. once said,

  1297. the cross is the

  1298. pulpit in which

  1299. Christ preached

  1300. God's love for

  1301. the entire world.

  1302. You see, this act

  1303. of looking and

  1304. this belief is the

  1305. key determining

  1306. factor of

  1307. someone's eternal

  1308. destiny.

  1309. For reading on in

  1310. verses 18 to 21,

  1311. why?

  1312. Why are the

  1313. ungodly, the

  1314. lovers of

  1315. darkness,

  1316. condemned?

  1317. While certainly

  1318. their other sins

  1319. are deserving of

  1320. condemnation,

  1321. verse 18 gives

  1322. an interesting

  1323. answer.

  1324. With the word

  1325. believe repeated

  1326. three times in

  1327. this short verse,

  1328. the emphasis is on

  1329. the act of

  1330. believing in

  1331. Jesus.

  1332. Jesus highlights

  1333. that they are

  1334. condemned already.

  1335. Why?

  1336. Because they have

  1337. not believed in

  1338. him.

  1339. To refuse then

  1340. the son of God

  1341. and his blood

  1342. poured out for

  1343. you is really

  1344. to call down

  1345. judgment on

  1346. yourself.

  1347. In a sense,

  1348. this is the

  1349. greatest folly

  1350. that someone can

  1351. commit.

  1352. This is the

  1353. greatest reason

  1354. that someone be

  1355. condemned, that

  1356. they reject the

  1357. son whom the

  1358. father sent in

  1359. love.

  1360. But why?

  1361. Why do they

  1362. reject the son?

  1363. Read with me in

  1364. verse 19 to 21.

  1365. And this is the

  1366. judgment.

  1367. The light has

  1368. come into the

  1369. world and the

  1370. people love the

  1371. darkness rather than

  1372. the light because

  1373. their works were

  1374. evil.

  1375. For everyone who

  1376. does wicked things

  1377. hates the light and

  1378. does not come to

  1379. the light lest his

  1380. works be exposed.

  1381. But whoever does

  1382. what is true comes

  1383. to the light so

  1384. that it may be

  1385. clearly seen that

  1386. his works have been

  1387. carried out in God.

  1388. These next verses

  1389. now show then the

  1390. process of how

  1391. one's wicked deeds

  1392. and disobedience to

1393. God lead then to an

  1394. outright rejection of

  1395. the light.

  1396. Verse 19 to 20

  1397. show that the

  1398. people choose,

  1399. they choose to

  1400. shut themselves in

  1401. darkness because

  1402. they have no desire

  1403. to be disturbed or

  1404. exposed.

  1405. They refuse to

  1406. make changes in

  1407. their lives because

  1408. they're too

  1409. comfortable in their

  1410. sin.

  1411. So they live in

  1412. darkness in their

  1413. eyes and they grow

  1414. accustomed to the

  1415. darkness.

  1416. darkness so that

  1417. when the light of

  1418. Christ comes it

  1419. hurts their eyes.

  1420. They don't want to

  1421. see it.

  1422. In fact it's

  1423. actually too weak of

  1424. language to use

  1425. because it's not that

  1426. they don't want to

  1427. see the light but

  1428. they love the

  1429. darkness.

  1430. They love the

  1431. darkness over the

  1432. light.

  1433. They love the

  1434. darkness because they

  1435. love their evil

  1436. deeds being hidden.

  1437. They value their own

  1438. pride, their own

  1439. image rather than

  1440. integrity and

  1441. contrite faith.

  1442. But then verse 21

  1443. says that those who

  1444. have put their faith

  1445. in Jesus are

  1446. radically different.

  1447. They do what is

  1448. true completely by

  1449. the grace of God.

  1450. Those that see Jesus

1451. for who he really is

  1452. seeing him as

  1453. infinitely valuable

1454. as the son of God

  1455. and as their source

  1456. of light and as

  1457. their source of

  1458. life.

  1459. They are the ones

  1460. that act in

  1461. righteousness,

  1462. obedience by the

  1463. power of God.

  1464. So instead of

  1465. running away,

  1466. they step into the

  1467. light, not out of

  1468. arrogance or

  1469. haughtiness, but in

  1470. humble redirection

1471. to the glory of God.

  1472. God, so friends, as

  1473. I close, I exhort

  1474. again, we must keep

  1475. our eyes on the

1476. light of the son of

  1477. God.

  1478. Put negatively, we

  1479. mustn't let our eyes

  1480. become fixated on the

  1481. darkness.

  1482. What are some things

1483. in your life that keep

  1484. your eyes off of

  1485. Jesus?

  1486. What do you fixate

  1487. your eyes on?

  1488. Is it money?

  1489. Is it social media?

  1490. Is it video games?

  1491. Is it others?

  1492. Is it yourself?

  1493. Jesus himself warns

1494. of this in Matthew 6.

1495. The eye is the lamp

  1496. of the body.

1497. So if your eye is

  1498. healthy, your whole

1499. body will be full of

  1500. light.

1501. But if your eye is

  1502. bad, your whole body

  1503. will be full of

  1504. darkness.

  1505. You'll have a healthy

  1506. eye.

  1507. When you view Jesus,

1508. when you view him as

  1509. lovely, as your

  1510. supreme treasure, and

  1511. everything else just

1512. loses its value in the

  1513. light of Christ.

  1514. In this Advent season,

  1515. let's keep the main

  1516. thing the main thing.

  1517. Let's joyfully celebrate

1518. how God sent the light

1519. of the world, the son

  1520. of God, to the

  1521. darkness.

  1522. Let's faithfully wait

1523. for the light of the

  1524. world to come again.

  1525. As Hebrews 12, 1-2

  1526. says,

  1527. Let us also lay

  1528. aside every weight

  1529. and sin which

  1530. clings so closely,

  1531. and let us run

  1532. with endurance the

  1533. race that is set

  1534. before us.

  1535. Looking to Jesus,

  1536. the founder and

  1537. perfecter of our

  1538. faith,

1539. who for the joy that

  1540. was set before him

  1541. endured the cross,

  1542. despising the shame,

1543. and is seated at the

  1544. right hand of the

  1545. throne of God.

  1546. Let's pray.

  1547. Amen.

  1548. Amen.

  1549. Amen.

  1550. Amen.

  1551. Amen.

  1552. Amen.

  1553. Amen.

  1554. Amen.

  1555. Amen.

  1556. Amen.

1557. God, I pray, astound us

  1558. by your love again.

1559. May we never lose the

1560. wonder of how much you

  1561. condescended Christ.

1562. You came, took on flesh to

1563. save a broken and rebellious

  1564. people.

1565. How, how did you, how?

1566. How could you love in this

  1567. way?

1568. How could you love us in

  1569. this way?

  1570. Amen.

  1571. God, amaze us.

1572. This Advent season, it's all

  1573. about you.

1574. We look to you, Jesus.

1575. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1576. Amen.

  1577. Amen.

  1578. Amen.

  1579. Amen.

  1580. Amen.

  1581. Amen.

  1582. Amen.

  1583. Amen.

  1584. Amen.

  1585. Amen.

  1586. Amen.

  1587. Amen.

  1588. Amen.

  1589. Amen.

  1590. Amen.

  1591. Amen.

  1592. Amen.
