  1. I have to confess that there was a unique struggle in preparing

  2. this message, not for the reasons that you might think.

  3. The challenge of studying and meditating on this particular

  4. portion of Scripture was solely due to the overwhelming glory

  5. that this passage presents. I felt as though whenever I

  6. reached a ceiling of understanding, that ceiling was

  7. removed and there were greater heights, greater levels of

  8. Revelation awaiting to be climbed.

  9. And when those levels were reached, there were even more

  10. levels to discover. There, I felt as though when

  11. this chapter was opened, a Volt was opened and a wave of gold,

  12. silver, and precious stones just spilled out.

  13. And particularly last night, standing there before this text

  14. looking around me, I thought to myself, what am I to do with all

  15. of this? Where am I to go with all of

  16. this? This scripture rightfully

  17. demands many parts, and we're not going to do that because

  18. I've been comforted by the realization that this particular

  19. moment is shared in Matthew, shared in Luke.

  20. And if the Lord Terry's, and we do at some point as a church,

  21. arrive to another gospel account down the road, then when we do

  22. come to this particular miraculous occurrence, we will

  23. have much to work with. There will still be much

  24. available at this banquet, and so we will attempt to come

  25. together and bring these things in a manner that we can

  26. understand while also honoring the absolute majesty of this

  27. portrait of Christ. And we will do so by organizing

  28. our thoughts in the following way.

  29. We will look first at the timing, the timing of this

  30. miracle. We will also look at the

  31. companions of this miracle. And lastly, we will look at the

  32. response to this miracle and as simple as that format might be.

  33. The way we are going to most benefit from this is if we have

  34. Mark open before us with Luke and with Matthew at the same

  35. time, so that we can do somewhat of a comparative analysis and we

  36. can take these different threads and see a more complete picture

  37. of what is happening here on this holy mountain.

  38. And with that, may I encourage you from the beginning to give

  39. yourself over to these next few moments without distraction,

  40. Because this is a very meaty passage and it requires our

  41. efforts to chew if we are going to digest and benefit from the

  42. glorious flavors and nourishment that comes from what the Holy

  43. Spirit has inscribed here. What I am speaking to you of

  44. today is the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ.

  45. It was an event of glory, but upon meditation and thinking

  46. about because the sound team and the media team often asks in

  47. advance what is the the message of the what is the the title of

  48. the message today? And you would probably say the

  49. glory of the Transfiguration. But there's too many glories,

  50. the glories of the Transfiguration.

  51. So many glorious things happen in this one moment, and I want

  52. you to see it with me. I want you to travel with me in

  53. these passages, and I want your heart to come alive again as you

  54. see just how amazing God is and just how supernatural that Bible

  55. you have in your hands really is.

  56. Let's go to mark Chapter 9 and let's begin together in verse

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  57. one. May the Lord Jesus help us and

  58. empower us by His Holy Spirit to understand all that He has

  59. desire to speak, and may He receive maximum glory and praise

  60. and recognition for this authorship.

  61. And the wisdom and the beauty of his voice in Mark Chapter 9,

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  62. verse one we read and he said to them, truly, I say to you, there

  63. are some standing here who will not taste death.

  64. Until they see the Kingdom of God after it has come with

  65. power. And after six days Jesus took

  66. with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high

  67. mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before

  68. them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no

  69. one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them

  70. Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

  71. And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here, Let

  72. us make 3/10 one for you and one for Moses, and 1:00 for Elijah.

  73. For he did not know what to say. For they were terrified, and a

  74. cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud.

  75. This is my beloved son. Listen to him.

  76. And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with

  77. them but Jesus only, Jesus only. May we see Jesus only.

  78. Today, the timing of this miracle, this chapter opens up

  79. with an interesting promise that Jesus makes, one that I believe

  80. has been misunderstood and misapplied even in some people's

  81. eschatology. Jesus looks at his own after

  82. telling them about his suffering, and they're suffering

  83. for following them, for following him.

  84. And he proclaims that among them standing there, they would not

  85. taste death. There would be a select few who

  86. would not taste death until something occurs, until they

  87. witness a particular event, and that is the Kingdom of God,

  88. coming with power, coming with power.

  89. Now that has led some to wonder if Jesus says that some of his

  90. own disciples would not die until the Kingdom would come

  91. with power, then has the Kingdom of God come in that Messianic

  92. glory already? Some would say yes, some would

  93. say based on this, surely then very early on Jesus Kingdom has

  94. been made fully manifest, because how could it be?

  95. His disciples surely are dead. Are we actually still waiting

  96. for the Kingdom to come with power?

  97. And if we are, then Jesus broke his promise, they would claim.

  98. And if not, if the Kingdom has not really come with power, then

  99. what other options are you really left with then?

  100. Are some of the disciples still alive in 2023?

  101. Surely not. These attempts to try to make

  102. sense of this is really something we don't have to

  103. entertain. When we do one thing, just honor

  104. the context. Look at the context.

  105. Context is king. Context keeps you safe.

  106. Context brings you to the true answer, at least the closest

  107. answer to the truth. Let's look at Jesus saying this

  108. here and compare it where else. He said he said it in two other

  109. places. One place in Luke and one place

  110. in Matthew. I told you in advance to have

  111. those books ready so that we can have a more complete picture.

  112. Let's turn quickly to Matthew 1628.

  113. To the left of Mark, Matthew 1628.

  114. Jesus says in Matthew 1628. Truly, I say to you, there are

  115. some standing here who will not taste death until they see the

  116. Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.

  117. Now turn to the right to Luke in Chapter 9.

  118. You look at Luke 9. Look with me quickly at verse 27

  119. and what do we see here in this passage?

  120. But I tell you, truly there are some standing here who will not

  121. taste death until they see the Kingdom of God.

  122. Now, if you have all those passages open, what do all of

  123. these declarations in these respective accounts have in

  124. common? All you have to do is look

  125. immediately after Jesus makes that statement, and they all

  126. have this one thing in common. Each time Jesus made this

  127. promise, it was immediately preceded before him, taking up

  128. some of his disciples up on the mouth of Transfiguration.

  129. Right after Jesus said it in Mark, right after Jesus said it

  130. in Luke, right after Jesus said it in Matthew, immediately after

  131. we have the event of the transfiguration.

  132. Meaning what? The Transfiguration is the very

  133. fulfillment of this promise. The pledge that Jesus makes to

  134. his own was realized on this mountain.

  135. In what sense? Well, Christ here on this

  136. mountain is going to unveil something of his glory.

  137. And by doing so, He is giving the disciples A revelation, A

  138. glimpse, a peak, a sample, if you will, of what form He will

  139. take, of what demonstration He will have when He does come in

  140. his Kingdom with power. In other words, what's happening

  141. here on the Transfiguration was very much a manifestation of the

  142. king and his glory, but it was a foreshadowing.

  143. It was something that was real and true, but it was just a

  144. glimpse, not the complete fulfillment of it.

  145. And So what the disciples are actually experiencing here at

  146. this time? Is in fact the appearance of

  147. Christ in his glory a demonstration of his power, but

  148. not the complete understanding and experience that awaits?

  149. Why did Jesus choose to do this now?

  150. Why at this point? And again, we have to look at

  151. what he just finished saying. He told these disciples, who are

  152. eagerly anticipating the Messiah to come in His splendor and

  153. majesty, that he was going to suffer and die instead, and on

  154. top of that. He looks at his closest

  155. followers and he says you also must suffer.

  156. You also each have a cross with your name on it.

  157. Talk about blowing a bubble. Talk about being deflated.

  158. Talk about being even tempted. To be discouraged.

  159. You have this high anticipation, this high expectation that this

  160. is the Messiah. We've seen his miracles, we've

  161. seen his power. He's going to make his Kingdom

  162. appear at any moment, and instead he hears, they hear,

  163. namely, Peter as the leader as well.

  164. I'm going to die, I'm going to suffer, I'm going to resurrect.

  165. But you also, you're going to know some suffering for

  166. following me. And then he makes this

  167. statement. But some of you here, you're

  168. going to see my Kingdom come with power.

  169. I'm going to show you something. And the reason why he wants to

  170. show them this, the reason why he's going to peel back the veil

  171. and he's going to he's going to expose something of yet of yet

  172. to come is because he wants to build them up.

  173. He wants to encourage him. He wants to bring some level of

  174. relief to them after hearing of the fate of the Messiah and

  175. their fate as well. In other words, by Jesus now

  176. coming and transfiguring before them, he's communicating

  177. something in the immediate sense.

  178. He wants the disciples to know. My death is not where it ends.

  179. God's purpose and program does not end with death.

  180. There is a glory to come. There is power to be realized.

  181. There is a government that will indeed be introduced.

  182. That will indeed be put into motion, and will never ever know

  183. and end. And disciples, in order to build

  184. your faith with that, in order for you to see the full and

  185. complete picture of what this is all about, come with me.

  186. Let me show you something of my glory.

  187. Let me show you something of what is to come.

  188. In other words, Jesus wants to come for them that their

  189. expectation of this awesome Kingdom is not wrong.

  190. It's just not yet. And so this is what the

  191. disciples are going to realize. And they also would be

  192. encouraged as they prepare to suffer themselves and understand

  193. if we are to be martyred, if we are to be hated, if we are to be

  194. persecuted. We are not giving our lives to

  195. something that will not end up being glorious, that will not

  196. end up being majestic and beautiful and dazzling.

  197. We saw, we saw him on that mountain.

  198. We saw what is to come, and they were able to be strengthened for

  199. the suffering that is to come. May I remind you, in your

  200. suffering, may I encourage you in your walk with Christ, with

  201. whatever persecution you are enduring, whatever persecution

  202. America will face in the coming years, that one way to

  203. alleviate, one way to strengthen your soul is to contemplate much

  204. on the glory of Jesus Christ. Keep your eyes on the last

  205. chapter of the story. Remember what is to come.

  206. Remember that this is not it. As much as we rejoice in the

  207. finished work of Jesus Christ, his redemptive plan is not yet

  208. finished. There is still something to

  209. come. There's still fulfillment to be

  210. realized. Focus on that.

  211. Set your mind on things above and see what strength will come

  212. to you. See what kind of what kind of

  213. relief you will realize as the disciples were to realize and

  214. this very moment. And that's why Peter says later

  215. on in his One Epistle and First Peter one or Second Peter 116

  216. rather. That we were eyewitnesses of His

  217. What? Majesty.

  218. We were eyewitnesses of His Majesty.

  219. We saw His royalty. We.

  220. Saw his authority, we saw. The magnificence of who he is.

  221. We saw it, we beheld it, and he testifies it of it later to the

  222. Christians, who also need to be encouraged by.

  223. So how is the Lord going to now infuse this grace into them?

  224. He takes his closest three Peter, James, John, and he goes

  225. up to a high mountain until they are very isolated.

  226. He stands before them, and we're told here in verse two that he

  227. transfigured before them, transfigured before them.

  228. The original word for transfer is where we get the word

  229. metamorphosis. It's talking about a powerful,

  230. all-encompassing kind of alteration, the same kind of

  231. experience that a Caterpillar knows when it becomes a

  232. butterfly. We're not talking here about

  233. Jesus just slightly being enhanced.

  234. We're talking about this complete sense of

  235. transformation, physically speaking.

  236. He transfigured before them, and every single gospel account

  237. cannot help but comment on the whiteness of his clothes.

  238. Mark says that no one on earth could bleach them.

  239. You get the impression here that he's at loss of words, that when

  240. Peter told him about what he saw, he's like, I can't, I can't

  241. put language to just how pure and just how brilliant his

  242. attire was, Matthew says. His face shone like the sun.

  243. Luke says that his face was actually altered, so you almost

  244. get the impression that this was a sight that left them somewhat

  245. speechless. Clearly we saw the reaction.

  246. They were terrified. There was this awe.

  247. There was something so overwhelming about what they

  248. perceived. Surely that's what's going to

  249. happen when we see Him and His glory.

  250. Surely we are going to be absolutely stunned.

  251. I can't wait to see casual Christians see Jesus.

  252. I can't wait to see what's going to be on their face when they

  253. see Him come and all of his glory and might and strength and

  254. 2nd Thessalonians chapter one, verse 10.

  255. We are told that when Jesus does come back for his Saints and

  256. glory, you know what our response is going to be?

  257. That he might be marveled. At just the sight of Christ is

  258. going to cause us to stare at Him and wonder just who He is

  259. and not not necessarily His words, just who He is with.

  260. His presence will cause us to be an absolute awe.

  261. And the Holy Spirit says in Second Thessalonians the Saints,

  262. when he comes, will marvel at him, will marvel at him.

  263. And there was a sense of that marveling here.

  264. Here's Jesus now who just unleashes something and they are

  265. now. In the light of this glory.

  266. But Luke adds a detail that Mark doesn't mention that Matthew

  267. doesn't mention. I don't want you to see it

  268. because yes, the timing here. Is after he had taught about

  269. suffering and the location here is on top of this mountain.

  270. But Luke says Jesus was doing something right before he was

  271. transfigured and I want to show it to you in Luke 9.

  272. Look here with me in verse 29, Luke 929.

  273. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was

  274. altered and his clothing became dazzling white.

  275. You know what? Dazzling is?

  276. Sparkling. There's a sparkle there.

  277. But notice what Luke says as he was praying.

  278. Luke loves to tell us about Jesus praying and his gospel

  279. record. He tells us that Jesus was.

  280. Praying at his baptism, he tells us that he is praying here.

  281. And so what's now? We have again.

  282. We have another piece to this. Yeah, the disciples were brought

  283. up to the mountaintop. But Jesus, before them began to

  284. pray, began to commune with the Father.

  285. And the Holy Spirit wants to tell us that it was in the

  286. praying that the transfiguration occurred.

  287. Could Jesus have morphed without prayer?

  288. Sure. Because this is not just an

  289. observation, This is a detail for your instruction of mine.

  290. There is a principle here, and I'm sure you're already aware of

  291. it. Christ in his praying knew a

  292. certain alteration. Is it any different for you and

  293. I that there is a deeper conversion to be known?

  294. There is a deeper transformation to experience?

  295. There is a clear reflection to be known in the place of prayer,

  296. in the place of being in the presence of God and seeking His

  297. face. That's the instruction here.

  298. That's the example that Christ provides as he was transfigured.

  299. You also will know a change to a certain degree.

  300. When you know how to sit before the Lord and allow the light of

  301. His presence, allow the truth of His Word, allow your heart being

  302. open before Him, for Him to speak into your life, and reveal

  303. things to your conscience, and to make things known through His

  304. Word to. You there is a special depth of

  305. change that can be experienced in this place of prayer.

  306. You will not know a deeper change unless you know how to

  307. value genuine communion with God, and Jesus models that so

  308. perfectly. There was a particular glory

  309. that shined through him, and I see in the Bible that there is a

  310. particular beauty that will be reflected on you and I.

  311. When we choose to take our relationship with him seriously

  312. in the place of prayer, there's something that he'll do in us

  313. and through us that will shine brighter.

  314. In the place of prayer, what are the psalmists say in Psalm 34?

  315. He says something that I believe echoes the sentiment.

  316. He says in verse four I sought the Lord and He answered me and

  317. He delivered me from all my fears.

  318. Those who look to him or what radiant and their faces will

  319. never be ashamed. Those who look to Him are

  320. radiant. The looking to him is not just a

  321. sense of internal dependency. It's connected with verse 4.

  322. There's a looking that is expressed in prayer.

  323. I sought the Lord. I'm looking to the Lord.

  324. And one of the rewards of that is that there is a radiance, A

  325. radiance that comes with a confidence, a trust and

  326. enjoyment in the person of Jesus Christ.

  327. And and this kind of praying that Jesus prayed, I'm under the

  328. impression that it wasn't like a microwave kind of prayer.

  329. Can I show you how? You're still in Luke 9, right?

  330. While Jesus was praying, what do you think the disciples were

  331. doing? Any guess?

  332. Look at verse 32. Now Peter and those who are with

  333. him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake,

  334. they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him.

  335. We seen them sleeping before in the garden, right?

  336. And they were sleeping. According to the Gospels,

  337. because of sorrow, their eyes were heavy with sorrow.

  338. There's no indication here that they were sorrowful and that's

  339. the reason why, though they could have been because they

  340. were just told that the Messiah is going to suffer and they're

  341. going to suffer. Maybe they were just emotionally

  342. drained by that truth and they fell asleep.

  343. Or could it be that Jesus was praying and taking his time that

  344. they fell asleep Because of that, Jesus gave uninterrupted

  345. patient fellowship with the Father and here he is in that

  346. place with the Father. And the three disciples there

  347. are sleeping, and it is in that moment, at one point where he is

  348. transfigured. Can you imagine being asleep

  349. while Jesus is being transfigured?

  350. You know there are many Christians who can't see the

  351. glory of Jesus Christ that they can't get excited about

  352. something like Mark Chapter 9 because they're spiritually

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  353. asleep. They've been lulled to sleep by

  354. the love of the things of this world.

  355. They've been stimulated to the point where they are distracted

  356. and they can't see what Christ wants them to see.

  357. I hope you're not spiritually asleep today.

  358. I hope you're not getting bored by the revelation of the

  359. awesomeness of Christ. If any of us are.

  360. May the Lord have mercy and wake us up so that we can see just

  361. how amazing He is. And so we see here that there is

  362. the timing of the miracle. It was after he taught about the

  363. suffering of him himself and the suffering of the disciples.

  364. It was while he was praying. But now we come to something

  365. interesting, and it's the companions of the miracle.

  366. Peter, James, and John were not the only ones in attendance.

  367. They were not the only ones who were invited to this event,

  368. verse four of Mark 9 tells us. And there appeared to them

  369. Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

  370. That's. It's not every day Moses and

  371. Elijah show up. Especially when they haven't

  372. been on earth for thousands and hundreds of years.

  373. Moses and Elijah appear on the scene.

  374. And this is not by their own volition.

  375. This is not by their own will. Clearly, God had ordained and

  376. planned and scheduled their appearance here on this

  377. mountain. This was planned.

  378. This was staged, so to speak. It this was intentional?

  379. And the question I'm sure that's running through your mind is

  380. why? Why Maybe more than the how,

  381. some would say, how did Moses and Elijah appear?

  382. But I think the common question is why, out of the great roster

  383. of all the Old Testament Saints, why is it that Moses and Elijah

  384. were the ones who were summoned to stand with the transfigured

  385. Christ and to talk with him? So they weren't standing there

  386. stoic like statues. They appeared and there's a

  387. conversation going on. And I believe there are a few

  388. reasons why it was Moses and Elijah who appeared on the

  389. scene. Consider this one, the further

  390. confirmation of the identity of Christ.

  391. A further confirmation of the identity of Christ.

  392. What did Jesus ask the disciples?

  393. Not too far back, he asked them. Who do people say that I am?

  394. Look back here in Mark chapter eight.

  395. Look at verse 27. Jesus went on to his disciples

  396. in the villages of Sister Philippi, and on the way he

  397. asked his disciples, who do people say that I am?

  398. And they told them John the Baptist and others say Elijah

  399. and others. One of the prophets, Peter

  400. rightly confessed the identity of Jesus Christ and Jesus

  401. praised Peter because of that There was number confusion among

  402. him or the disciples concerning who he is as Messiah.

  403. But if there was any confusion, if there was any confusion,

  404. surely it's clarified now that you have Jesus standing there

  405. and who's beside him? Elijah.

  406. They ain't the same person and he's not one of the prophets.

  407. He's not even one of the greatest of prophets, Elijah and

  408. even Moses himself. Jesus is unique, and not only is

  409. unique, He's greater than Moses. He's greater than Elijah.

  410. He stands alone. He's in a category all by

  411. himself. And so even through this

  412. indirectly, there is somewhat of a further confirmation of the

  413. identity of Jesus Christ. But there's another kind of

  414. confirmation, not of the identity of Christ per se, but

  415. of the testimony of Christ. The Pharisees love to come up

  416. with excuses not to listen to Jesus, not to consider him as a

  417. candidate for the Messiah that they supposedly were

  418. anticipating, and one of their favorite deflections, one of the

  419. favorite things that the the Pharisees want to do whenever

  420. they were confronted with messianic evidence was appeal to

  421. Moses. Say, what do I mean by that?

  422. Let me show you in John Chapter 9.

    John 9 chapter mention

  423. In John Chapter 9, after the man born blind was healed, there's

    John 9 chapter mention

  424. this investigation that goes on because they want to know how

  425. did this happen. And when it came to the

  426. Pharisees who interviewed this man, they said something in John

  427. 928. There's a lot of Bible today, so

  428. I'm encouraged to hear the flipping of those pages.

  429. John 928 Look at what these men say.

  430. And they reviled him, saying You are his disciple.

  431. But we are who? The disciples of Moses.

  432. Verse 29. We know that God has spoken to

  433. Moses, but As for this man, we don't know where he comes from.

  434. There's just like, scorning him. Who's this Jesus?

  435. Where did he come from? What's his reputation?

  436. What's his testimony? We're followers of Moses.

  437. We pledge our allegiance to him. And so as a deflection, they

  438. appeal to the authority of Moses.

  439. They appeal to the Scriptures concerning Moses, the events

  440. tied to Moses. And So what happens on the Mount

  441. of Transfiguration? Elijah shows up.

  442. And who else shows up? Moses.

  443. And what does Moses do? By standing and talking with

  444. him, We're going to find out what they talked about.

  445. He is now witnessing to Christ. He is now affirming that this is

  446. indeed the one that I have spoken of.

  447. This is indeed the one that I pointed to.

  448. I'm not in disagreement with this Jesus.

  449. I pointed to this Jesus. There's no confliction here.

  450. There's no two camps here. God spoke of a prophet to come.

  451. God spoke of a prophet to come, and you shall listen to him, and

  452. this is him. And so the appearance of Moses

  453. is somewhat of a rebuke to the Jewish leaders and to all who

  454. would try to hide and shield themselves behind him, and how

  455. he was a mediator of their covenant.

  456. Now Moses shows up. Says no, no, no.

  457. It's about Christ. I bear witness that his

  458. testimony is true, and so we have a confirmation in their

  459. appearance of the testimony of Christ.

  460. But that's not the only confirmation.

  461. We also have the confirmation of the ability of Christ.

  462. And so here's Jesus now, manifesting His glory and

  463. allowing that manifestation to comfort the disciples.

  464. That OK, he will die, He will suffer many things, but he will

  465. come back again. And when he come back, when He

  466. comes back, He will conquer and He will defeat all of our

  467. enemies, and he will rule and reign forever and ever and ever.

  468. But that's not the only message that Jesus sought to convey.

  469. Because the appearance of Moses and Elijah was also a message in

  470. itself. When they appeared, there was

  471. also something that they could comfort themselves in concerning

  472. their future glory. Not just the glory of the king,

  473. but the glory of the Saints. Elijah and Moses are alive after

  474. hundreds and hundreds of years. Elijah and Moses are alive and

  475. they're communing with Christ. Elijah most alive.

  476. And they they never cease to really live.

  477. They're they're still here, existing and vibrant and lively.

  478. So when Christ comes to give him a taste of the Kingdom of the

  479. power to come, he's also giving them the encouragement that the

  480. Saints will also rule and reign with him.

  481. The Saints will also live with him, be with him, commune with

  482. him. So they had a hope for their

  483. tomorrow as well. How did Moses die?

  484. He died. He died.

  485. How did Elijah enter into the presence of God?

  486. Did he die? There's something there as well.

  487. Most had died a real death. Elijah entered into the presence

  488. of God in a very unique way. How does the scripture portray

  489. the Saints in their entrance of the glory?

  490. Well, some of us will die. But what is first lesson only in

  491. four say that some will be caught up in the air, some will

  492. not die when he comes, and they will meet him in the air.

  493. And so you even have that kind of a picture there going on with

  494. Moses and Elijah. There are some Saints who will

  495. die real death physically, but will be brought into his arms.

  496. And there are some who will not die, and they will meet the Lord

  497. in the air. And so there's resurrection hope

  498. here. There's encouragement here.

  499. Oh, there's so much more. I wish I can park here.

  500. I wish I can just park here with Moses and Elijah.

  501. Because there's so many other sub points.

  502. Let me give you one to consider. What was Moses's burning desire

  503. in the book of Exodus, Chapter 33, Chapter 34, After he was

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  504. assured that the presence of God would go with him in Israel into

  505. the Promised Land, that was not enough for Moses.

  506. Moses said, please what? Show me your glory.

  507. There's more to you that I want to know.

  508. There's more to you that I want to discover.

  509. And God was willing to grant that request, but with caution.

  510. You will see something of my glory, but you cannot.

  511. What? You can't see my face.

  512. So hide in the cleft of the rock and I will put my hand there to

  513. cover you, and you will see my backside.

  514. Moses is more than willing to take what he can get, but oh,

  515. Jesus is so merciful and gracious.

  516. Why? Because we're told here that

  517. here's Jesus in his glory and his face is shining.

  518. And who's in the presence of this glory?

  519. Moses. Now he's standing in the glory

  520. of God with an unveiled face. Jesus didn't hide his face from

  521. Moses at this point. What was another desire of

  522. Moses? Oh Lord, would you please allow

  523. me go to the Promised Land? No.

  524. Enough. Stop asking me about this.

  525. OK? Where is Moses standing now?

  526. He's in the Promised Land. Isn't God gracious?

  527. Is any merciful? So we have the companions.

  528. We have the companions of this miracle here, Moses and Elijah.

  529. And finally, they confirm one last thing.

  530. They not just confirm his identity.

  531. They don't just confirm his testimony.

  532. They don't just confirm his ability, they confirm the

  533. centrality of Christ. There is a way of summarizing

  534. the library of the Old Testament.

  535. The Hebrew scriptures and Jesus tells us how the Jews understood

  536. a summary of the description of the scriptures.

  537. You know what he said when he talked about the first greatest

  538. commandment and the second greatest commandment?

  539. He says on these two. Commitments is what the Law and

  540. the Prophets made-up. The Law and the Prophets.

  541. If you want the reference to, that's in Matthew 22 and Matthew

    Matthew 22:40

  542. 22 verse 40. I believe on these two

  543. commandments we have the law and the prophets.

  544. Moses represents the law. Elijah represents the prophets.

  545. Jesus now standing with them is proclaiming that he is a

  546. fulfillment that all that the prophets pointed to, all that

  547. the Law spoke of Christ is the substance.

  548. All the promises, all the pictures, all the prophecies in

  549. the entire library of the Word of God is now here in the flesh.

  550. He's here the centrality of Jesus Christ.

  551. This is what we've been waiting and longing for.

  552. He is now here before you standing and we're told here

  553. that they were talking. Moses, Elijah and Jesus.

  554. What were they talking about? The disciples sleeping?

  555. What were they discussing? What were they conversing?

  556. The Bible tells us what they were talking about.

  557. And Luke Chapter 9. If you want to know what they

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  558. were talking about, look at verse 30 and verse 31.

  559. It says here in Luke 930 to 31 and behold, 2 men were talking

  560. with him, Moses and Elijah. We cover that who appeared in

  561. glory and spoke of his departure, spoke of his

  562. departure, which was about to be accomplished at Jerusalem.

  563. The Greek word for departure is Exodus.

  564. So what was the main theme of their conversation?

  565. Jesus's. Exit from this world through his

  566. death and resurrection. That's what they were talking

  567. about. But what were they talking

  568. about? I I just, I I had a joy just

  569. kicking back and thinking about that Moses and Elijah talking

  570. with Jesus about his plan of salvation.

  571. Were they encouraging him? Were they praising and adoring

  572. him? Was Jesus in return in the

  573. conversation, illuminating more things to them?

  574. Remember we we heard from brother Mark earlier that the

  575. prophets wondered at what time at what point these things were

  576. to occur. I wonder if Jesus here in this

  577. moment is telling them the greater details of his exodus.

  578. Moses led an exodus the people of Israel from Egypt slavery

  579. under fair Jesus. Is Exodus going to conquer death

  580. so that we can be delivered from Satan and?

  581. They're talking about his Exodus.

  582. How can you be asleep? Guys wake up.

  583. Disciples are snoring. How can you be asleep?

  584. But finally they did wake up. They woke up and Jesus standing

  585. before them with these two Saints invokes and Peter a

  586. response. Now we look at the response of

  587. the miracle. Look at verse 5.

  588. And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here.

  589. Let us make 3 tents, one for you and one for Moses, and 1:00 for

  590. Elijah. Oh Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter.

  591. Peter's clearly excited. Not only is he excited, but

  592. we're told here that they spoke out of terror.

  593. He didn't know what to say, so he just, in his fear gave some

  594. kind of suggestion. It's a very.

  595. Bad idea to make decisions when you're emotional.

  596. Don't let your emotions rule you.

  597. Don't let them determine your response and your reaction to

  598. things. May the Holy Spirit help us to

  599. restrain ourselves and to be people who govern ourselves

  600. according to His word and truth more than what we feel in a

  601. moment, no matter how overwhelming those feelings are.

  602. Peter's Peter's terrified. But he's not just saying

  603. anything. He's not just saying anything.

  604. And that's how some people interpret this, that Peter just

  605. kind of randomly uttered something with no value or

  606. significance. And to those who wouldn't say

  607. that, to say no, Peter is actually saying something, They

  608. would say that he's just attempting to be hospitable

  609. here, right? Here's Jesus Moslem, Elijah,

  610. we'll make some tense if you guys want to stay, we'll make

  611. this as much as as comfortable as possible for you.

  612. Peter is not even trying to be hospitable here.

  613. Peter knows his Bible. And though he misinterpreted

  614. many things, he was aware of some things.

  615. And he was especially aware concerning the Messianic age

  616. when Christ would rule and reign on the earth.

  617. He He loved those prophecies. And there is a prophecy in the

  618. book of Zachariah that tells us what will happen when Jesus

  619. Christ comes in his Second Advent, What will occur on the

  620. earth? What will be recognized?

  621. What will be celebrated? We get clues and indications of

  622. what life will be when Jesus rules and reigns on the earth.

  623. And I want to show you one thing that Peter connected with when

  624. he said this. Go to Zechariah 14 with me,

  625. please. And in verse 16.

  626. Now, mind you, this is speaking about when Jesus returns to the

  627. earth in judgment, in vengeance and glory.

  628. And what are we told in Zechariah 1416 then?

  629. Everyone who survives of all the nations in light of His judgment

  630. on the earth that have come against Jerusalem.

  631. We'd read that in book of in the Book of Revelation, don't we?

  632. The nation's coming against Jerusalem shall go up year after

  633. year to worship the king, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the

  634. feast of booths. So some of the the vitical

  635. feasts will be recognized during the millennial reign, not all of

  636. them. Some of them.

  637. And one of them will be the feasts of booths.

  638. And during the feasts of booths, the Jews would actually create

  639. booths or tents as a way of rehearsing God's faithfulness

  640. and protection during the wilderness.

  641. But more than that, then being settled and God being in their

  642. midst. And so here's how Peter is

  643. interpreting what's happening. Jesus is making his glory known,

  644. and I can imagine what was in his heart.

  645. Oh, this is it. Yes.

  646. He's not going to suffer. Here's the Here's what we've

  647. been waiting for. This is what we've been asking

  648. for. Hallelujah.

  649. Here's Jesus in his glory. Oh, we got some old Saints now

  650. that are here. This is the moment.

  651. Let's get our tents ready, because in Zachary 1416, he says

  652. that if we're going to worship the king when he comes, we're

  653. going to worship him with the feast of booth.

  654. So we'll get one for you, we'll get one for you, we'll get one

  655. for you. This is it.

  656. And what's so funny actually, is that you can imagine Peter's

  657. angst, because in Luke's version, we're told here in Luke

  658. 933 and Luke 933, we're told, And as the men were parting from

  659. him, who are the men? Moses and Elijah.

  660. As the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus,

  661. Master, it is good that we are here.

  662. So imagine this. Now you have the three, the, the

  663. crust coming out of their eyes. You have Jesus, Moses and

  664. Elijah. And at this point Moses and

  665. Elijah are walking away. And Peter registers this enough

  666. to realize, oh, this is this is Jesus coming with power.

  667. This is Jesus coming. Glory and Moses.

  668. No, no, no, no. It's good that we're here.

  669. No, no, no. Come, come.

  670. I'll have a 10 for you all, but don't leave.

  671. Please don't leave. Peter still didn't get it.

  672. Peter still after the rebuke. Get behind me, Satan, after the

  673. clear teaching. He's still holding on to this

  674. idea that Christ is not going to suffer and die, and when Jesus

  675. gives them hope for tomorrow, some kind of revelation to

  676. prepare them for their own suffering and his suffering,

  677. Peters completely misinterprets it.

  678. And he thinks that Jesus is coming full-fledged now, yes.

  679. Here's some tense Let's do this. And this is not the only

  680. response to this miracle, because there is another

  681. response that comes now. There's another interjection.

  682. There's another intervention. Not by Moses, not by Elijah.

  683. Not even by the Lord Jesus himself.

  684. What are read of verse 7? And a cloud overshadowed them.

  685. And a voice came out of the cloud.

  686. This is my beloved son. Listen to him.

  687. Well, that makes sense in light of Peter's response, right?

  688. Let's build some tents. And who comes to correct Peter?

  689. God the Father overshadowing the scene.

  690. You're not listening. This is my beloved son.

  691. Listen to him. Listen to him and one gospel

  692. account, it says. While Peter was speaking, the

  693. cloud came. So the Lord of glory, the Father

  694. intervenes with this cloud. And this is not some random

  695. mist. This is not some kind of curtain

  696. closing to this miracle. A cloud here is intentional.

  697. Has God appeared in a cloud before?

  698. Oh, if you know the Old Testament, yes.

  699. More than once. Many times has the Lord appeared

  700. in the cloud. And not only has He appeared in

  701. the cloud, there was some significant moments where He

  702. appeared in the cloud. And through that cloud of voice

  703. came and the most. I can't think of a more

  704. significant event than an Exodus 19 on Mount Sinai.

  705. When God called Moses to prepare the nation of Israel to appear

  706. before him, and God would manifest in his power and might,

  707. and one of the manifestations would indeed be a cloud, a thick

  708. cloud, we are told in Exodus 19. And when that cloud descended

  709. upon that mountain, a voice came through.

  710. And the reason for that display of glory was to affirm was to

  711. define, was to sign off on the law that would be given as a

  712. covenant was being established. In other words when God came

  713. with that cloud on Mount Sinai, he was demonstrating to the

  714. people of the authority of the law.

  715. This is coming from heaven. This is coming from me.

  716. This is not man made. I'm showing you that this law is

  717. authoritative, and I bear witness to this law in this

  718. covenant. And you'll be held accountable

  719. based on how you respond to it. Now what do we see?

  720. Years, hundreds of years go by. And here's Jesus now and Jesus

  721. Christ. He's on a mountain.

  722. And while he's on a mountain, a cloud comes and covers him, and

  723. a voice speaks through the Where do we see that?

  724. Exodus 19A. Cloud comes and a voice comes

  725. through the cloud. What do we see here?

  726. In Mark chapter 9A, cloud comes and a voice is spoken through.

  727. Why did God the Father choose to manifest himself in this way?

  728. For the same reason why He did back in Exodus 19, to show to

  729. the disciples. Then the same way I manifested

  730. to give authority and to sign off on the legitimacy of the

  731. law. I'm doing now the same for my

  732. son. Listen to him.

  733. Listen to him. Listen to him.

  734. He has authority. I've set my seal upon him.

  735. And so now we see this Old Testament, imagery.

  736. Mountain Cloud, Voice. Covenant, New Testament, Jesus,

  737. mountain, cloud. He's ready to give a new

  738. covenant. And a cloud overshadowed them

  739. And voice came out of the cloud. This is my beloved son.

  740. Listen to him. Here's where we're ending.

  741. What Matthew said concerning the father statement is a little bit

  742. expanded and compares it to Mark.

  743. I want you to see it in Matthew 17, verse five,

  744. he was still speaking when behold, a bright cloud

  745. overshadowed them in a voice from the cloud said, This is my

  746. beloved son with whom I am well. Pleased listen to him, Matthew

  747. adds, with whom I am well, pleased.

  748. Now we look at this and we see that the Father bears witness of

  749. the Son. We see that He expresses the

  750. divine nature of the Son. This is my beloved Son.

  751. Not just the divine nature of the Son, but the divine love

  752. that the Father shared with the Son.

  753. And this is him telling the disciples who would carry on the

  754. message of Christ. Listen to him, stop mishearing

  755. what he's saying. Understand that.

  756. He is the one that you've been waiting for.

  757. He is the one that I put my seal on.

  758. He is the one that is going to bring in a new covenant.

  759. Look, you're on the mountain. Here's the cloud.

  760. Isn't this ring of Bell disciples?

  761. I was talking to my dad about this last night.

  762. He brought up something that I thought, wow, that's so

  763. significant. This statement in itself is is

  764. profound on its own, but there's much more to it if you really

  765. look at it. What the father says of the son

  766. is dripping. Absolutely dripping with Old

  767. Testament relevance, Old Testament truth, particularly

  768. concerning Jesus Christ. In other words, I argue before

  769. you today that when the Father says this is my beloved Son with

  770. whom I am well pleased, listen to him was a strategic statement

  771. that for the careful I would see that these are components within

  772. the Hebrew Bible that pointed to Jesus Christ.

  773. In other words, this is a profound statement that is in

  774. essence an echo in echo, something that you have read if

  775. you have covered the Old Testament.

  776. And when the father says this, there should be something in you

  777. that goes, I kind of heard something similar to this.

  778. I've kind of seen something close to this.

  779. If you do the work, you realize the father is saying something

  780. even deeper than just what he is offering on the surface.

  781. So let's take a breath, right. A lot of scripture, a lot of

  782. turning. This is my beloved Son with whom

  783. I am well pleased. Listen to him.

  784. You ready? Psalm Chapter 2, verse seven.

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  785. We're going to turn to three places, and I promise you we're

  786. ending Psalm, Chapter 2, verse 7.

    Psalms 2:7

  787. Psalm 27 I will tell of the decree the Lord said to me, You

  788. are my son. Today I have begotten you who

  789. fulfilled the Psalm Jesus fulfilled in more than one

  790. place. Is this Psalm quoted and is

  791. given to Christ. You are my son.

  792. Hold on to that. You are my son.

  793. Go to Isaiah 42. Isaiah 42 verse one you are my

  794. son. Isaiah 42 verse one.

  795. This is a messianic prophecy. This is pointing to Jesus

  796. Christ. And notice what God says about

  797. his servant, the person of Jesus Christ.

  798. Isaiah 42 one. Behold, my servant whom I

  799. uphold, my chosen in whom my soul delights, in whom my soul

  800. delights. Here is the Father, expressing

  801. his deep pleasure in the service and obedience that the Son would

  802. walk in when he would enter into this world.

  803. My soul delights in him. Psalm 27.

  804. You are my son. Isaiah 42 One the servant of God

  805. with whom my soul delights. Last place, Deuteronomy chapter

    Deuteronomy 18:15

  806. 18, verse 15. Deuteronomy 1815.

  807. This is a known prophecy concerning Christ.

  808. The Lord your God will raise up for you A prophet like me.

  809. Moses says from among you, from from your brothers.

  810. It is to him you shall listen. What did the Father say when

  811. that cloud overshadowed Christ? This is my beloved Son with whom

  812. I am well pleased. Listen to him.

  813. And here you have the statement of Jesus being the Son and

  814. Psalm. 2 Here you have a statement of God expressing his

  815. pleasure for the servant of God and Isaiah 42 One.

  816. And here you have in Deuteronomy God telling Moses that there is

  817. a prophet to come to him. You shall listen.

  818. You know what's significant about the locations of each of

  819. those components? Each of those expressions and

  820. signs some. Isaiah the prophet Deuteronomy,

  821. the law, Psalm prophet law, Psalm prophet law.

  822. I don't know if it clicked if it didn't click.

  823. When Jesus in the end of Luke 24 appears before his disciples in

  824. his resurrected form, you don't have to turn there.

  825. Let me read to you what Jesus said to his disciples, he said

  826. in Luke 24 verse 44. This he said to him.

    Luke 24:44

  827. These are my words, that I spoke to you while I was still with

  828. you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and

  829. the prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.

  830. Here's the Father. This is my beloved Son, with

  831. whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.

  832. This is the one that the Psalms spoke about.

  833. This is the one that the Prophet spoke about.

  834. This is the one that the law spoke about.

  835. This is him. Now listen and suddenly verse

  836. eight of Mark 9 looking around, they no longer saw anyone with

  837. him but Jesus only. It's all about Jesus when you

  838. read the prophets. It's about Jesus.

  839. When you read the Psalms points to Jesus when you read the law.

  840. Even in the law. Yeah, the law that we feel

  841. nervous about. The law that we think is boring,

  842. even in the law. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.

  843. And here's the Father saying, this is him.

  844. This is him. Is any worthy of worship, Is any

  845. worthy of adoration. Is your heart not moved to see

  846. that what you have in your hands, what you just heard in

  847. the past hour and a few minutes is a supernatural reality.

  848. Oh, I pray that God would receive glory and what we heard

  849. today. That we would love him, obey

  850. him, and listen. Listen to him.

  851. Lord, would you help us this afternoon as we look to you in

  852. your word, thanking you for the glories of the Transfiguration?

  853. We pray oh now that you would help us worship you

  854. appropriately based on the truth that we have heard.

  855. Thank you. Thank you, Lord, that we are

  856. people who can open your book without fear of persecution.

  857. That you can speak in ways that we never thought.

  858. We are amazed. We stand amazed.

  859. Help us remember your glory, the glory to come, the glory that we

  860. will know and share with you. When you do come, and you will

  861. come. Our cry is Maranatha.

  862. Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
