  1. continue in our study of great texts

  2. in the Old Testament.

  3. And the idea is to wet your appetite

  4. for the Old Testament.

  5. So we give you a taste of what's there

  6. so that you can desire more. And I hope

  7. as we go through this study, you will be

  8. reading the books that we're dipping

  9. into.

  10. and say, "Oh, there's more here than I

  11. realized."

  12. And so that is our gold that we all

  13. become readers of the Old Testament

  14. and students of the Old Testament. Many

  15. Christians I in America are almost

  16. blatantly ignorant of the Old Testament.

  17. And so it's important for us. God gave

  18. it to us.

  19. He didn't throw it away and now we just

  20. have a New Testament.

  21. It's in the word of God. And all

  22. scripture is given by inspiration of

  23. God. It's talking about the Old

  24. Testament as well as the New

  25. and is profitable.

  26. So look with me if you will to 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  27. chapter 7.

  28. 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  29. chapter

  30. 7.

  31. In 2 Samuel, God makes an announcement

  32. to King David.

  33. And God is announcing

  34. something that he was going to do not

  35. only for David and people in the Old

  36. Testament,

  37. but for everyone afterwards.

  38. This is an alltime thing.

  39. And so God did something surprising and

  40. significant. I underscore this not just

  41. for King David.

  42. And not just for the Jewish nation.

  43. And not just for 3,000 years ago when

  44. David lived or even 2,000 years when G

  45. ago when Jesus was incarnated, but for

  46. all time.

  47. And so we are in 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  48. And as I read through this chapter, I'm

  49. going to ask you if you can follow the

  50. outline that I'm going to give you.

  51. And I want to say something

  52. to just get all of our attention, mine

  53. included.

  54. The importance of this section of

  55. scripture

  56. cannot be overstated

  57. or over evaluated.

  58. This is extremely important.

  59. What goes on here

  60. in verses 1 to3 there's a proposal

  61. in verses four so following there's a

  62. promise

  63. and at the end of it there's a praise

  64. okay let's if you follow that 1:3 is a

  65. proposal

  66. 4 to 17 is a promise

  67. and 18- 29 is the praise that follows

  68. this awesome promise that God gave to

  69. David.

  70. This promise

  71. was a covenant.

  72. The covenant is a legal document with

  73. legal ramifications and legal

  74. uh standing.

  75. God was committing himself

  76. before King David and the nation and the

  77. world.

  78. So that's our outline and we'll be

  79. working through it this morning. Let's

  80. look to the Lord in prayer. Father, help

  81. me to speak. Guide us as we gather.

  82. May this particular section of scripture

  83. be riveted into our minds and hearts

  84. and directing us to love and to serve

  85. and enjoy

  86. and rest

  87. in the God who made this agreement that

  88. he himself will never break

  89. in Jesus name. Amen.

  90. Now, some of you know this about

  91. covenants.

  92. There's different kind of covenants in

  93. the Bible.

  94. There's conditional covenants.

  95. If you do this, I'll do this.

  96. A conditional covenant,

  97. which it's an agreement between God and

  98. men on the basis of man's responsibility

  99. uh and activity.

  100. But then there's also unconditional

  101. covenants.

  102. The unconditional covenant is a covenant

  103. where God says, "I'm going to do this."

  104. the obligations are on me

  105. regardless of your performance.

  106. We're to believe both and we're to

  107. receive both.

  108. And obviously, you have to believe in

  109. Jesus Christ for this covenant to mean

  110. anything to you. But as far as what is

  111. God concerned, he's announcing something

  112. awesome.

  113. And I want us to think and rest in that.

  114. Now, it all started with a proposal by

  115. King David. He's an older King David

  116. now. He's not a young man anymore.

  117. He's had decades of fighting.

  118. He's finally has a little bit of peace

  119. or he's not fighting

  120. uh Philistines and he's not fighting

  121. others who didn't like his uh ascension

  122. to the throne.

  123. and he's got a little bit of rest.

  124. And so let's look at the first three

  125. verses. The proposal

  126. came to pass when the king sat in his

  127. house,

  128. that's his palace,

  129. and the Lord had given him rest

  130. roundabout from all his enemies.

  131. So the battlefield part of David's life

  132. is not over completely, but it's over

  133. comparatively

  134. from what it was all those years on the

  135. battlefield.

  136. And the king said to Nathan the prophet,

  137. "See now I dwell in a house of cedar.

  138. I've got a pretty good I've got a better

  139. This is a lot better than the cave, I

  140. want to tell you.

  141. I'm dwelling in a house of cedar.

  142. I spent 10 years of a as a caveman, but

  143. now I've got a house of cedar. I've got

  144. this palace

  145. and God's got a tent.

  146. This isn't right.

  147. If I've got a palace, God ought to have

  148. a temple, not just a tent. That's his

  149. thinking.

  150. God never asked him for this. This is

  151. something that came up in his own heart.

  152. See now I dwell in a house of cedar, but

  153. the ark of God dwells within curtains.

  154. Now, the ark of God was that box with

  155. the gold top and the mercy seat and the

  156. gold angels looking at the mercy seat

  157. and the ten commandments inside of it

  158. and the mana and and the st Aaron's rod

  159. that budded and and that's where the

  160. priest would put uh blood every time he

  161. would go into the holy of holies in that

  162. tent.

  163. God's got a tent.

  164. And so David makes a proposal.

  165. I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark

  166. of God dwells within curtains. And

  167. Nathan said to the king, "Go do all that

  168. is in your heart, for the Lord is with

  169. you."

  170. Now, David's a king, and Nathan's a

  171. prophet, but David wasn't speaking as a

  172. prophet. David or excuse me, Nathan

  173. wasn't speaking as a prophet. He was

  174. just saying, "Sounds good to me."

  175. This was not an inspired utterance. It

  176. was just a response.

  177. Seems good. You seem like you got your

  178. priorities right and go for it.

  179. But then the Lord spoke to Nathan

  180. and Nathan had to correct

  181. his statement. So, we got the promise of

  182. King David to build a temple uh for

  183. Israel's God. And then we've got the

  184. excuse me, the proposal by David to

  185. build a temple for Israel's God. And

  186. then the promise by Dave uh by King

  187. David

  188. by King David's God to build him a

  189. house.

  190. You want to build me a house, I'll build

  191. you one.

  192. Now, they're using the word house in

  193. different ways, right?

  194. You use the word a house for a a

  195. building that we live in, but a house

  196. also can be like uh we use it for king's

  197. families, the house of so and so and the

  198. house of so and so. And so this is

  199. what's going on

  200. verse four. It came to pass that night

  201. that the word of the Lord came to

  202. Nathan.

  203. So God is now informing Nathan.

  204. It might seem good to David. Might seem

  205. to you good to you. But I want to inform

  206. you there's something greater and more

  207. wonderful than you have even imagined.

  208. Go tell my servant David, thus says the

  209. Lord, shall you build me a house for me

  210. to dwell in? Whereas I've not dwelt in

  211. any house since the time I brought up

  212. the children of Israel out of Egypt,

  213. even to this day, but have walked in a

  214. in a tent and in a tabernacle. In all

  215. places which I've walked with all the

  216. children of Israel, spoke I a word with

  217. any of the tribes of Israel whom I

  218. commanded to feed to shepherd or feed my

  219. people Israel, saying, Why build you not

  220. me a house of cedar?

  221. I never asked for this. I never revealed

  222. I wanted a house.

  223. Now therefore, so shall you say to my

  224. servant David, thus says the Lord of

  225. armies, the Lord of hosts, I took thee

  226. from the sheepcoat, from following the

  227. sheep to be ruler over my people, over

  228. Israel. And I was with thee wherever you

  229. went, and have cut off your enemies out

  230. of your sight, and have made thee a

  231. great name, like the name of the great

  232. men who are in the earth.

  233. You didn't do this on your own.

  234. Moreover, I will appoint a place for my

  235. people Israel and will plant them that

  236. they may dwell in a place of their own

  237. and move no more, neither shall the

  238. children of wickedness afflict them

  239. anymore as formerly. And as since the

  240. time that I commanded judges to be over

  241. my people Israel, remember Ruth in the

  242. book of Judges,

  243. have I caused thee to and I've caused

  244. you to rest from all your enemies. Also,

  245. the Lord tells thee that he will build

  246. you a house

  247. using it in what? in not in the sense of

  248. cedar or stone, but a family,

  249. a house. Referring here to a dynasty,

  250. a dynasty.

  251. And when your days will be fulfilled,

  252. and you'll sleep with your fathers,

  253. I will set up thy seed after thee, which

  254. proceeds out of thy own body, and I'll

  255. establish his kingdom.

  256. He'll build a house for my name. He's

  257. talking about Solomon there.

  258. And I'll establish the throne of his

  259. kingdom forever. Now Solomon's throne

  260. was just an inheritance of David's

  261. throne.

  262. So David learns I am going to enjoy

  263. something that Saul wanted very badly.

  264. But God said no

  265. to him. Saul won the dynasty. He wanted

  266. Jonathan to follow him as king.

  267. And because of Saul's uh activities,

  268. sinful activities, God said, "Nope, this

  269. ends with you.

  270. This is not going farther."

  271. But here to David, who certainly was not

  272. perfect himself. God says of Solomon's

  273. Solomon, uh, "I'll establish his

  274. kingdom, and he'll build a house for my

  275. name. I'll establish the throne of his

  276. kingdom forever." Now, the throne of his

  277. kingdom is the throne of David's

  278. kingdom. Solomon's got a right because

  279. he came from David.

  280. And I'll be a father to him, and he'll

  281. be my son. If he commit iniquity, I'll

  282. chasten him with the rod of men and with

  283. stripes of the children of men. But my

  284. mercy shall not depart away from him, as

  285. I took it from Saul, whom I put away

  286. before you,

  287. and thy house and thy kingdom shall be

  288. established forever

  289. before thee. Thy throne shall be

  290. established forever. Start circling that

  291. word forever.

  292. According to all these words and

  293. according to all this vision, so did

  294. Nathan speak to David.

  295. So, we've got David's proposal, the

  296. proposal by King David to build a temple

  297. for Israel's God. And then we've got a

  298. promise by King David's God to build him

  299. a house

  300. uh through his family generationally,

  301. beginning with Solomon.

  302. And so the God of the Bible changes

  303. something dramatically.

  304. God could have just said, "Oh, it sounds

  305. all right. Let's build the temple. I'm

  306. I'm in." God wanted a temple built. But

  307. God had something bigger than a temple.

  308. David's desire to build God a temple was

  309. a good desire.

  310. And God's desire to build David a

  311. dynasty was even better.

  312. U the temple

  313. that Solomon built, David's son, was

  314. burned down and torn down by King

  315. Nebuchadnezzar

  316. later in history, wasn't it? 586 BC.

  317. So it lasted for a few hundred years,

  318. but the dynasty that God's promising

  319. here is indestructible.

  320. Indestructible.

  321. And it will involve the incarnate

  322. Lord Jesus Christ as a descendant of

  323. King David,

  324. his death, but his resurrection, his

  325. ascension, and his return.

  326. This is especially powerful. King David

  327. had no relatives succeed him. Although

  328. Jonathan would have been a very good

  329. choice,

  330. but God and his sovereignty

  331. didn't build Saul a dynasty,

  332. but David got them.

  333. You know, we don't get to choose our

  334. place

  335. in the program of God.

  336. Sometimes God's will is for us to

  337. achieve this and to be this and to do

  338. this but not move forward. And we try to

  339. go farther and God says, "Nope, this is

  340. work. This is what I got for you."

  341. And someone else goes farther than we

  342. do.

  343. But we have our part to play just as

  344. Saul had his part to play and Jonathan

  345. had his part to play.

  346. But dad God had something bigger for

  347. David.

  348. And sometimes God has something

  349. bigger, at least in our eyes, for others

  350. than for us. I hope we're okay with

  351. that. We're not in competition with each

  352. other. We just we we we have our role,

  353. others have their role. So we have the

  354. proposal of David in 1:3 and we have the

  355. promise of God in verses 4 to 17 and it

  356. says according to all these words and

  357. according to all this vision so did

  358. Nathan speak to David.

  359. Now when this when David heard this,

  360. he had to sit down.

  361. He was sitting in his house at the

  362. beginning, but apparently when Nathan

  363. confronted him, he wasn't uh sitting

  364. anymore. He's standing up. And he was so

  365. stunned by it, he had to sit down.

  366. And David's praise begins to ascend to

  367. God.

  368. Notice in verse 18,

  369. then went David in and sat before the

  370. Lord.

  371. And he said,

  372. "Who am I, oh Lord?

  373. What is my house

  374. that you brought me thus far?

  375. I don't deserve this.

  376. Why me?

  377. Who am I?

  378. And who and what is my house

  379. that you've brought me thus far? What's

  380. my family that we get to do this?

  381. And this was yet a small thing in your

  382. sight, oh God. But what you've spoken

  383. also of your servants's house for a

  384. great while to come. This isn't going to

  385. be one, two, three generations and

  386. that's it. It's from a great while to

  387. come.

  388. And is this the manner of man, oh Lord

  389. God? What can David say more to you? For

  390. you, Lord God, know your servant.

  391. You know the good, bad, and ugly of me.

  392. How can I be uh privileged for this?

  393. For thy word's sake, and according to

  394. thy own heart, have you done all these

  395. great things to make thy servant know

  396. them? Wherefore thou art great, oh Lord

  397. God, for there's none like thee, neither

  398. is there any god beside thee, according

  399. to all that we've heard with our ears.

  400. And what na what what one nation in the

  401. earth is like your people even like

  402. Israel whom God went to redeem for a

  403. people for himself. He's talking about

  404. getting the nation out of Egypt where

  405. the family became a nation and

  406. and for for the great things and all

  407. inspiring and for your land before your

  408. people which you redeemed

  409. to thee from Egypt from the nations and

  410. their gods. For thou hast confirmed to

  411. thyself, thy people Israel, to be a

  412. people unto thee forever. This covenant

  413. doesn't just affect me.

  414. It affects the whole Jewish nation.

  415. I mean, if you're a king and you don't

  416. have any subjects,

  417. not much of a kingdom, right?

  418. So David understood that this was for

  419. him and his family, but it was also

  420. something for the whole Jewish people

  421. forever.

  422. And now, oh Lord, the word you've spoken

  423. concerning thy servant and concerning

  424. his house, establish it forever. Do as

  425. thou hast said. You said you're going to

  426. do it. There's that word forever again.

  427. Keep circling that.

  428. And let thy name be magnified forever,

  429. saying, the Lord of hosts is the God

  430. over Israel, and let the house of thy

  431. servant David be established before

  432. thee. For thou, Lord of hosts, God of

  433. Israel, hast revealed to thy servant,

  434. saying, I'll build thee a house.

  435. Therefore hath thy servant found in his

  436. heart to pray this prayer to you. Do

  437. what you said. That's all God said. Ba

  438. basically David said, "Amen."

  439. And now, oh Lord God, thou art thy God,

  440. and thy words are true, and thou hast

  441. promised this goodness to thy servant.

  442. Therefore now, let it please thee to

  443. bless the house of thy servant, that it

  444. may continue forever before thee, for

  445. thou, oh Lord God, hast spoken it, and

  446. with thy blessing, let the house of thy

  447. servant be blessed forever. Are you

  448. still watching the forevers?

  449. So, a proposal by King David to build

  450. the temple and a promise by God to build

  451. a dynasty instead of David building the

  452. temple. His son gets to do it, but David

  453. doesn't. So, God's saying, "No, you're

  454. not going to do it, David. Your son will

  455. do it, but not you. But I'll build you a

  456. dynasty, and that's better than getting

  457. to build me a temple."

  458. And then a praise of David in response

  459. to God

  460. who flipped the script.

  461. Who flipped the script. And David said,

  462. "Your plan's better than my plan."

  463. And any of you that have never learned

  464. that need to learn it. If God says no to

  465. your plan, it's because he's got a

  466. better plan.

  467. And if he God says no to my plan, he's

  468. got a better plan.

  469. And if God doesn't let you do something

  470. you sincerely want to do for him,

  471. he's got a better plan.

  472. I hope we understand it. And whatever

  473. that better plan is, we may not live to

  474. see it. David didn't live to see it all

  475. this, but it's still better.

  476. God loves to say yes.

  477. It's hard for him to say no.

  478. So when he says no, there's a reason.

  479. And the catch word here is that word

  480. forever. And I I was helping you to see

  481. that verse 13, verse 16, verse 25, 26,

  482. 29. It's it's it's this is something

  483. that is an explicit contrast between

  484. King Saul and David. Saul reigned and

  485. then

  486. nobody in his line reigned again. But

  487. this Davidic dynasty is because of the

  488. Davidic covenant. It's not something

  489. temporary. It's something not just

  490. something

  491. long. It's eternal. It's forever.

  492. Now with that in mind, turn with me to

  493. the New Testament in Luke chapter 1.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  494. Luke 1 verse 32.

    Luke 1:32

  495. This is what the angel said to Mary.

  496. I'll start with verse.

  497. And remember Mary was of the Davidic

  498. line. Mary was genetically connected to

  499. David through David's son Nathan, as

  500. Joseph was genetically connected to

  501. David through Solomon. But in verse 30,

  502. the angel said to her, "Fear not, Mary,

  503. for you have found favor with God. And

  504. behold, thou conceive in your womb, and

  505. bring forth a son, and shall call his

  506. name Jehovah saves.

  507. And he'll be great, and shall be called

  508. the Son of the Highest. And the Lord God

  509. shall give to him the throne of his

  510. father

  511. David.

  512. The throne of his father David. Remember

  513. David lived and died a thousand years

  514. before Jesus was born.

  515. Can you trace your family back a

  516. thousand years?

  517. Some of you can.

  518. uh the Hixons, but we've got people in

  519. our family that trace the Hixons back to

  520. to the uh to the 1600s in America. Then

  521. you get into the 1500s in England, but

  522. that's as far as we go.

  523. But David had we're talking about Jesus

  524. was born a thousand years after Jesus

  525. died or after David died.

  526. And this is the great picture here, an

  527. amazing picture to Mary.

  528. And it says of Jesus, he'll be great.

  529. Verse 32, and shall be called the son of

  530. the highest. And the Lord God shall give

  531. to him the throne of his father David.

  532. Thousand years. God hadn't forgotten

  533. that promise.

  534. And he will reign over the house of

  535. Jacob. How long?

  536. until they reject him and crucify him

  537. and then that's it.

  538. He will reign over the house of Jacob

  539. forever.

  540. He'll reign over the house of Jacob

  541. until the Jews blow it and crucify him

  542. and then the church age starts and

  543. there's nothing else for the Jew except

  544. to be part of the church.

  545. He's going to reign over the house of

  546. Jacob. That's what it says. is what the

  547. text says forever. Which means the house

  548. of Jacob has to exist forever as well as

  549. the house of David. Hitler can't stop

  550. it. The Muslims can't stop it. Nobody's

  551. going to stop this program.

  552. And of his kingdom there shall be

  553. no end.

  554. of his kingdom there shall be no end.

  555. That's what the text says.

  556. Kind of important,

  557. not just a longlasting dynasty, an

  558. eternal dynasty that includes the Jewish

  559. people. The Davidic throne is a Jewish

  560. nation throne.

  561. Ezekiel 37. Turn to Ezekiel 37

    Ezekiel 37:24

  562. verse 24 and 25.

  563. Ezekiel 37 24-2.

  564. God said this to the prophet Ezekiel.

  565. And David my servant shall

  566. h be king over them and they all shall

  567. have one shepherd. They they shall also

  568. walk in my ordinances and observe my

  569. statutes and do them. And they shall

  570. dwell in the land that I've given to

  571. Jacob my servant in which your fathers

  572. have dwelt. And they'll dwell in it even

  573. they and their children and their

  574. children's children. Oh, there it is

  575. again forever.

  576. and my servant David shall be their

  577. prince

  578. forever.

  579. Moreover, I'll make a covenant of peace

  580. with them. It shall be an everlasting

  581. covenant with them, and I'll place them

  582. and multiply them and set my sanctuary

  583. in the midst of them ever more. My

  584. tabernacle shall be with them. Yeah,

  585. I'll be their God, and they'll be my

  586. people. And the nations shall know that

  587. I, the Lord, do sanctify Israel, when my

  588. sanctuary shall be in the midst of them

  589. forever.

  590. Now, that's a lot.

  591. Now, here's an interesting contrast. You

  592. remember the book of Daniel?

  593. Remember Nebuchadnezzar's vision in

  594. chapter 2

  595. and starting out with the head of gold

  596. and then the silver and then you know as

  597. it goes down the four kingdoms each

  598. kingdom replacing another kingdom.

  599. When does all that replacement stop?

  600. With the second coming of the son of

  601. man.

  602. With the second coming of the son of

  603. man.

  604. with the stone that comes out of heaven

  605. and hits the image on the toes and it

  606. all falls apart and there becomes a

  607. great kingdom. And in Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  608. the second coming of the son of man and

  609. clouds of great glory and the

  610. Babylonian, Persian and Greek and Rome

  611. will be gone, but his kingdom will be

  612. forever. Kingdoms come and kingdoms go,

  613. but not the kingdom of the Lord Jesus.

  614. Now, let's con. You say, "Well, we're in

  615. the church age now, and that's replaced

  616. Israel." I I'm not a replacement

  617. theology person, and I know some of you

  618. are, but I'm sorry. I'm not. Well, it

  619. can't be. I I believe in the text.

  620. And I watch how the New Testament begins

  621. and ends. I'm going to say that again.

  622. I watch how the New Testament begins and

  623. ends.

  624. How does the New Testament begin?

  625. Matthew 1:1.

    Matthew 1:1

  626. Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son

  627. of Abraham.

  628. That's how Matthew's gospel begins. The

  629. first verse of the first chapter of the

  630. first book in the New Testament.

  631. How does the New Testament end?

  632. In Revelation 22:16,

    Revelation 22:16

  633. five verses from the end of the last

  634. chapter of the last book of the New

  635. Testament, it brings David in again.

  636. So, you've got David at the beginning of

  637. the New Testament in Matthew 1:1. And

    Matthew 1:1

  638. you've got David, King David, at the end

  639. of the testament in Revelation, New

  640. Testament 22, verse 6.

  641. Now, God's trying to tell us something,

  642. and we may not want to hear it.

  643. David's not going to be replaced like

  644. Saul.

  645. And Israel is not going to be replaced.

  646. Although they deserve it.

  647. They are under great chastisement for

  648. crucifying Jesus,

  649. but God still has a program for them.

  650. And the Davidic covenant proves it. And

  651. so in Revelation 22:16,

    Revelation 22:16

  652. I Jesus have sent

  653. my angel to testify to you these things

  654. in the churches. I am the root and

  655. offspring of David and the bright and

  656. morning star. Jesus doesn't say, "Well,

  657. you know,

  658. I was the Davidic king. I came and they

  659. crucified me. So that's it for that

  660. program. We're starting the church."

  661. Yes, the church started. It was always

  662. in God's plan. to start the church. But

  663. that doesn't mean he forgot the original

  664. plan. God keeps his promises.

  665. So,

  666. I hope you've heard of David.

  667. I was talking to someone just recently

  668. that was raised in a church and they

  669. never heard of George Whitfield. They

  670. just happened to bring George

  671. Whitfield's name up. So, I don't know

  672. who that is. And I'm thinking, how can

  673. you be a have got raised in church and

  674. you don't remember who George Whitfield

  675. is? Or how could you be American and not

  676. know who George Whitfield?

  677. Person didn't have a clue and didn't

  678. care.

  679. Well, how can you be a Christian and not

  680. know who David is? How can you not know

  681. what the dividic covenant is? The

  682. ignorance in our churches is palpable.

  683. If there's ignorance in the pulpit,

  684. there's going to be ignorance in the

  685. pew.

  686. The reason people don't know their

  687. Bibles is pastor pastors pamper people

  688. and just give them baby food

  689. instead of really getting into the real

  690. teachings of scripture properly.

  691. David's not just someone who lived 3,000

  692. years ago. Oh, we know something of

  693. David. I learned that in Sunday school.

  694. He killed Goliath. I know that. What

  695. else do you know? Well, he wrote Psalm

  696. 323. I know that. What else do you know?

  697. Well, he committed adultery with Basheba

  698. and had to confess that. What else do

  699. you know? Well, he played the harp. He's

  700. pretty good musician. Wrote some songs.

  701. What else do you know? I don't know

  702. anything else.

  703. That's it.

  704. You got a kindergarten, Sunday school

  705. knowledge of David.

  706. You don't have a mature understanding of

  707. the Bible. Those stories are good for

  708. Sunday school. Everybody needs to get

  709. them. You stop there, you are hampered.

  710. The new the Bible's full of references

  711. to David. I tried to count them and I it

  712. got so hard I gave up. I had a

  713. concordance. I'm thinking.

  714. So I looked online and they said 928

  715. times

  716. starting with the book of Ruth chapter

    Ruth 4 chapter mention

  717. 4.

  718. And another one said over a thousand.

  719. I'm not sure how that difference is, but

  720. it's there. It's online. You figure out

  721. who's right.

  722. Why does the Bible talk about David so

  723. much? The Bible talks about David so

  724. much because it talks about Jesus so

  725. much. And you don't understand who Jesus

  726. is unless you know he is the promised

  727. and prophesied and pictured Messiah of

  728. Israel that God has ordained to reign

  729. forever.

  730. How does the book of Romans begin?

  731. That's Paul's magnumopus.

  732. Romans 1 1-4.

  733. It talks about Jesus being the son of

  734. God, the son of David.

  735. It talks about his deity and it talks

  736. about his identity

  737. as a son of David.

  738. How does Paul's that's how Paul's

  739. magnamopus starts. He talked. He doesn't

  740. leave David out. How does Paul's last

  741. letter,

  742. How's Paul's last letter, second

  743. Timothy,

  744. is that it Paul at the end of his life,

  745. did he ever grow out of this? Emphasis

  746. on David's 2 Timothy 28 and 9. Jesus

  747. Christ, the son of David risen from the

  748. dead. That's my gospel.

  749. Not just some carpenter from Nazareth.

  750. He was that Jesus Christ the son of

  751. David risen from the dead.

  752. Why all this preoccupation with David?

  753. The preoccupation with David on their

  754. part. Apostle Paul and the early church

  755. is because of what? The Davidic

  756. covenant. They knew it.

  757. Now King David in the Old Testament was

  758. the standard for other kings that came

  759. after him.

  760. uh they were all compared. All the king

  761. kings of the southern kingdom were

  762. compared to David. This one was like

  763. David. This one was like David.

  764. So David was kind of a standard. Of

  765. course, David was not sinless or not

  766. perfect, but he was a standard. And he

  767. was one that uh the covenant was given

  768. to.

  769. Now, there are certain people in history

  770. that are

  771. everyone's important because everybody

  772. plays a role, but some play a bigger

  773. role than others.

  774. Have you ever been to Mount Rushmore?

  775. Ever seen pictures of it?

  776. There's four presidents heads on that

  777. granite mountain.

  778. We've had more than four presidents,

  779. haven't we?

  780. that they selected four, the artists

  781. selected four.

  782. And if you really go through American

  783. history, you understand why he selected

  784. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson

  785. and Abraham Lincoln.

  786. We understand that because each of those

  787. were extremely significant in American

  788. history.

  789. They were not a minor

  790. importance. They were major importance

  791. in the expansion of our country or even

  792. the original existence of our country.

  793. George Washington's first and of course

  794. under Jefferson the Louisiana purpose

  795. purpose the re re the Louisiana

  796. purchase uh happened. Abraham Lincoln

  797. led during a civil war that could have

  798. destroyed everything. And finally Teddy

  799. Roosevelt, one of my favorite

  800. presidents, although I don't know if he

  801. was a true believer or not. I know he

  802. was religious. an extremely

  803. significant individual in the 20th

  804. century. Whether you agree of everything

  805. he did, I I'm not saying that, but

  806. interesting. So, they poke picked out

  807. major people. Who are major people in

  808. the Old Testament? There's all kinds of

  809. major people, but the two major people

  810. that stand out, really stand out are

  811. Abraham and David.

  812. Because God promised Abraham something,

  813. an unconditional covenant. The Abrahamic

  814. covenant is unconditional. It did dis it

  815. deals with his physical descendants. It

  816. deals with the land and it deals with

  817. being a blessing to all the nations.

  818. And the Davidic covenant is right up

  819. there with the Abrahamic covenant. Those

  820. are two major covenants, unconditional

  821. covenants in the Old Testament. Now, the

  822. Ten Commandments, that's a conditional

  823. covenant. The land covenant is a

  824. conditional covenant, but that's a whole

  825. other subject. These are unconditional.

  826. Um,

  827. David had a godly side, he had a poetic

  828. side, he had a romantic side, and he had

  829. a horrific side.

  830. He wasn't sentenced.

  831. But God promised him this.

  832. And Jay Oswald Saunders in his book

  833. Robust Robust in the faith said of

  834. David, "His is the fullest biography in

  835. the Bible."

  836. Abraham has 14 chapters. David has 62.

  837. Now, of course, Jesus was greater than

  838. David, but the point is an awful lot is

  839. emphasized on David.

  840. And Jay Oswald Sanders said, "It would

  841. be true to say that no other Bible

  842. character experienced so many swift

  843. changes of fortune as Daniel, as David."

  844. Toward the end of his life, he found a

  845. uh he he found a purpose to build a

  846. house for the Lord.

  847. You know, he fought all the battles.

  848. Now, I want to do something very

  849. positive besides killing people

  850. and said, "No,

  851. Solomon will get to do it. You've been a

  852. man of blood. I'm not going to let you

  853. do it because of that. Not because it

  854. was wrong what he did, but because of

  855. the temple is to beat all nations.

  856. And just in a practical side, God never

  857. tells his people no unless he's

  858. something much better for them.

  859. Better for us in the long run, better

  860. for God and his purposes, better than

  861. for others, better for the spread of the

  862. gospel, better for the glory of God.

  863. There's so many important passages here

  864. in on in on this business. The Davidic

  865. covenant was not something

  866. unanticipated. God talked about Abraham

  867. having kings out of him in Genesis 17:6

    Genesis 17:6

  868. and Genesis 35:11. And God even gave the

    Genesis 35:11

  869. requirements for the king in Deuteronomy

  870. 17:14-26

  871. through Moses before David was born. So

  872. there was always a plan for someday

  873. there's going to be king.

  874. Alva J. Mlan said, "The king must be

  875. God's chosen man sitting on an earthly

  876. underlined throne, an earthly throne of

  877. God's kingdom with God's book constantly

  878. before his eyes and in his heart and

  879. ever mindful that there are uh

  880. that as regards to the written word, God

  881. is the God above and he's above the

  882. humblest subject." uh uh as it reaches.

  883. It was a government of gods rather than

  884. of man's.

  885. That the establishment of kings over

  886. Israel did not in any sense mean the end

  887. of the theocratic rule is made clear by

  888. the prophet Nathan.

  889. I'll settle him in my house and in my

  890. kingdom forever. 1 Chronicles 74 17:14.

  891. Thus the existing kingdom under David

  892. and Solomon was not theirs but God's.

  893. Now if we look at our world history, I

  894. started comparisoning how long different

  895. dynasties last

  896. and I looked at Africa, I looked at

  897. Asia, I looked at Europe, I looked at

  898. North America, I looked at South

  899. America, I looked at Oceanana, there

  900. were articles online, the Chinese

  901. dynasty last this long, the Belgian this

  902. long, the Japan this long. And but G

  903. God's telling David this is going to be

  904. forever.

  905. Now, the Davidic dynasty can't last

  906. forever

  907. unless sooner or later one of the

  908. Davidic kings is risen from the dead.

  909. Are you following me?

  910. There has to be a resurrection of some

  911. Davidic descendant of David for the

  912. Davidic dynasty to last forever.

  913. And so that's what's going on in my

  914. mind. Reynold Chow in his an interesting

  915. book, there really is a difference.

  916. He cont he gives a contrast between

  917. replacement theology and dispensational

  918. theology. But he says in 2 Samuel 7,

  919. although this passage does not call

  920. God's promises to David a covenant,

  921. he's talking about 2 Samuel 7. doesn't

  922. use the word covenant. Other passages

  923. clearly indicate that God was

  924. establishing covenant with his servant.

  925. And he lists seven passages where the

  926. word covenant is used of what was

  927. happening in 2 Samuel 7. 2 Samuel 23:5,

    2 Samuel 23:5

  928. 2 Chronicles 21- 27, Psalm 89 52 verses

  929. long,

  930. Psalm 83:3 and4, and Jeremiah 33:19.

    Psalms 83:3 Jeremiah 33:19

  931. It was very clear to Old Testament

  932. readers that God was establishing a

  933. covenant with David.

  934. Remember the Christmas passage, Isaiah

  935. 9. Turn with me to Isaiah 9

    Isaiah 9:6

  936. verse 6.

  937. For unto us a child is born, unto us a

  938. son is given. The government will be on

  939. his shoulder. His name shall be called

  940. Pelle. Wonderful miracle worker,

  941. counselor, the mighty God, the father of

  942. eternity is the best way to translate

  943. that. The prince of peace and of the

  944. increase of his government and peace

  945. there shall be what? No end.

  946. I'm glad our presidents only have a

  947. limited time to be in office. Aren't

  948. you?

  949. Regardless of how you good good you

  950. think this one was or that one. I'm glad

  951. we have a limit.

  952. But this says there no need for this

  953. with this one. The increase of his

  954. government uh there'll be no end on the

  955. throne upon the kingdom in on the throne

  956. of David and on his kingdom to order it

  957. and to establish it with justice and

  958. righteousness from henceforth even

  959. forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts

  960. will accomplish this.

  961. Now, how important is the Davidic

  962. covenant? One Bible scholar that I have

  963. and I've read, he said, 2 Samuel chapter

    2 Samuel 6 chapter mention

  964. 6 and 7 deals with matters of the very

  965. heart of the entire book of Samuel.

  966. This is the heart. Whole book of Samuel

  967. is really written for this.

  968. And I when I was some of you were in our

  969. church in 2014, that's 11 years ago. I

  970. taught through 1 and 2 Samuel. And I

  971. happen to find my notes on that. And I

  972. rarely can find my notes there.

  973. That's a whole other picture. They're

  974. all all over the house. But he said,

  975. "This is what I wrote then when I was

  976. teaching 2 Samuel 1. This passage of

  977. scripture is so significant. so

  978. important

  979. uh so important in the Old Testament in

  980. the whole Bible that I simply do not

  981. have the words to even describe it

  982. perfect per imperfectly let alone to

  983. teach it properly.

  984. I I when I started thinking that the

  985. Davidic covenant, I thought this is over

  986. my head. How am I going to really get

  987. this across?

  988. 3,000 years ago, the God of the Bible

  989. made a surprising promise to King David

  990. that astonished him. God stunned him by

  991. his grace. God shocked him so totally

  992. that we have David's response in the

  993. second half of the chapter which can be

  994. summarized. I need to sit down. I'm

  995. overwhelmed.

  996. And I also wrote the rest of the Old

  997. Testament is built on this chapter. The

  998. whole New Testament is built on this

  999. chapter. The first and last chapters of

1000. the New Testament return the events of

1001. this chapter. Everything from Genesis

    Genesis 3:15

  1002. 3:15

1003. uh uh are anticipation of this chapter

1004. and everything till Revelation 22

1005. followed from this chapter. Are you

1006. getting the importance of what we're

  1007. looking at?

1008. This is the big picture.

1009. God vetoed David's plan. It was a good

1010. plan. Just wasn't God's plan. Has God

  1011. ever vetoed your plan?

1012. Yeah, I've had my plans vetoed.

1013. I thought it was a good idea. I was not

1014. a good idea and God just said, "Nope."

1015. And great insight comes to us if we

  1016. understand that God's plan's always

  1017. better than our plan.

  1018. That doesn't mean we shouldn't make

  1019. plans. Sometimes God said that's that's

1020. okay. I'll do this. But sometimes God

  1021. says no.

1022. And God sometimes interrupts our plans

1023. and he tells us something we don't want

1024. to hear. We got a plan and we're married

  1025. to our plan.

1026. We're married to our plan.

1027. For better or worse, rich or poor, in

1028. sickness or in health, this is the plan.

1029. How many people did God say no to a

1030. plan? It might have been a good plan.

1031. Jonah, Hosea, Samuel, Jeremiah, Ezekiel,

1032. in every one of them, God said, "Not

1033. your will, but mine be done."

  1034. This is stunning.

1035. Now, the length of God speaking to David

  1036. in this chapter

1037. indicates something of the importance of

  1038. it. David Burgon, I think I'm

1039. pronouncing his name correct, an Old

1040. Testament scholar said, "The words

1041. recorded here constitute the longest

  1042. recorded monologue monologue attributed

1043. to God since the days of Moses."

  1044. So God's

1045. really expanding things here and going

1046. over 997 words. The prodigious size of

1047. this divine pronouncement suggests that

1048. the writer intended it to be interpreted

  1049. as

  1050. uh particularly important

1051. perhaps as important as the Torah

  1052. itself.

  1053. And David's response to the Lord's

1054. magnificent deliberation is the longest

  1055. monologue of David.

1056. David himself was totally taken back by

  1057. what God promised him.

1058. It was way way way beyond and above any

  1059. of his highest expectations.

1060. And I wrote down some the Old Testament

1061. theologians. Not all this first one's

1062. not that conservative, but he said it's

1063. the most cons crucial theological

1064. statement in the Old Testament.

1065. The most crucial theological statement

1066. in the Old Testament. Another said, this

1067. is a conservative fellow Venoi matrix of

1068. biblical messianism. And Joyce Baldwin

1069. said it's the ideological summit of the

1070. Old Testament as a whole.

1071. So, if you haven't heard of the Davidic

1072. covenant, you've heard of it now.

1073. There's a legal agreement that God made

1074. with David. It's good for all time.

1075. And it it's a major thing like the

1076. Abrahamic covenant. And Bible principle

1077. is what? Keep the main thing the main

  1078. thing.

1079. Major on minors, minor on majors. We

1080. should never let a little thing become a

1081. big thing or a big thing get minimized

1082. and be a minor thing.

  1083. It's not healthy. It's not honorable.

  1084. It's not helpful

1085. to ignore what's the main thing.

1086. What's the main subject in this chapter

1087. is a good question to always ask. What's

1088. the main subject in this book?

1089. What's the main subject in this verse?

1090. Keep the main thing the main thing.

1091. Don't fight with small or great, but

1092. only with the king of Israel. was how uh

1093. the pagan uh general was and that's how

1094. Satan is. He hits the main things.

1095. So, we should focus on the main things.

1096. And Jesus said of the Bible, the volume

1097. of the book is written of me

1098. to do your will, oh God.

1099. The Pharisees were experts in mining on

1100. majors and majoring on minors. Read

  1101. Matthew 23.

  1102. I'm almost done. I'm I'm a little bit

1103. over, so forgive me. Can't preach too

1104. long. I got to catch an airplane.

1105. But John MacArthur told on himself,

1106. there's not many bigname preachers will

  1107. tell on himself.

1108. That John MacArthur was mentored

  1109. by Charles Fineberg.

1110. Paris Fineberg was a fine Old Testament

1111. scholar. He had two doctor's degrees,

1112. earned doctorates in in Hebrew and Old

  1113. Testament.

1114. and he was asked by John MacArthur's

1115. father to mentor him and John MacArthur

1116. as a very young man preached before the

1117. student body of Talbot Chapel

1118. Talbet Seminary Chapel and he chose 2

  1119. Samuel 7

1120. and uh his topic was not presuming on

  1121. God.

1122. Now not presuming on God is a okay thing

1123. right? we shouldn't presume on what

1124. God's going to do or not doing, but he

1125. thought he did pretty well in the

  1126. sermon. And afterwards, Charles

1127. Steinberg said, "How could you?

1128. You missed the whole point of the

  1129. passage.

1130. How could you? How could you? The

1131. passage presents the Davidic covenant

1132. culminating in the Messiah and his

1133. glorious kingdom." And you talked about

  1134. not presenting on God.

1135. God be thanked for older Christians that

  1136. correct us.

1137. And I give MacArthur credit telling on

1138. himself, but I'm sure that lesson, that

1139. rebuke lasted with him the rest of his

  1140. life.

1141. Now all of us have blown it. Now I I I I

1142. think Bible study is important. has got

1143. I think practical application is

1144. important. Uh what am I supposed to do?

1145. What am I not supposed to do? Uh all

  1146. that stuff.

1147. There's we need application. We need

1148. application to ourselves. We're going to

1149. give some real quick ones.

1150. But we the application is based on the

1151. teaching and we got to keep that

  1152. central.

1153. Petershime Alfred Petersshim said of

  1154. this section it's a neverending kingdom

1155. and a never passing king and Joyce

1156. Baldwin again said the major measure of

1157. God's greatness in his capacity to refer

1158. to the future as easily as to the past

1159. so demonstrating he's master of mankind

  1160. and the uh uh

1161. uh runner of history here is

1162. incomparable. He is incomparable in a

1163. total different category from all other

  1164. gods.

1165. This is big. This is shocking. David was

1166. shocked. We should be shocked.

1167. And David said, "God is my king."

1168. Chapter 7 and chapter 6 go together. And

1169. in chapter six, God David brought the

  1170. ark into Jerusalem.

1171. He did that right before this.

1172. And the ark represented the presence of

1173. God with his people in the holy of

1174. holies. And David when he did that was

1175. saying God is my king.

  1176. I'm a king under a king. I'm a

  1177. mediatorial king.

  1178. I rule for God. I'm under God. That's

1179. what David believed. Now, he got rebuked

1180. for that and chasened for that. We know

1181. that because he did it the wrong way.

1182. That's part of having God over us.

1183. So, let's make some applications to

1184. ourselves real quick. Let me just I'm

1185. going to go through them fast. Jesus was

1186. crucified with a sign over his head.

  1187. What did it say?

1188. Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews.

1189. He's never abdicated his dignity or

  1190. authority.

1191. Our loyalty must be to him above

  1192. everything else. Is it?

  1193. Is it?

1194. Do we operate at Athens Bible Church

1195. under the head of the church, King

1196. Jesus? Are we doing our own thing, our

1197. own way? Are we submitting to him?

1198. Number two, he is still King Jesus

1199. whether he's recognized or not.

1200. Not everyone recognized David 3,000

1201. years ago, but David was still king.

1202. Nabel thought he could safely ignore

  1203. David.

1204. David's own son rebelled against him,

1205. Abselum, and thought he could rebel

1206. against David. But David was the king.

1207. Did we ever sit down in awe because of

1208. what God's done for us?

  1209. We should

1210. this king is an example.

1211. Is our knowledge of the Old Testament

1212. uh kindergarten knowledge or are we

  1213. maturing?

1214. We trying to take the wide lens and the

  1215. big picture.

1216. Do we understand that God keeps his

1217. covenant promises and he does more than

1218. we ask or think? But that does more than

1219. we ask or think is done according to his

  1220. written word.

1221. The rejection and crucifixion of Jesus

1222. was a rejection and uh of the Davidic

  1223. Messiah.

1224. The Messiah is the seed of Abraham, the

1225. son of David. He's the suffering

1226. servant. He's the savior of the world.

1227. He's the He's the son of man. He's the

1228. eternal sovereign desired to sit on

  1229. David's throne forever and ever. That's

1230. what happened 2,000 years ago.

  1231. If you're being against David, you're

1232. against God. If you're against Jesus,

1233. the son of David, you're against God. If

1234. you're indifferent to David, like Nabal,

  1235. you're indifferent to God. If you're a

  1236. traitor against David,

1237. you were you were you like a hiel, you

1238. were a traitor against God to put him on

1239. the throne. David's seed is God's son.

  1240. Um,

1241. we have the right genealogy

1242. and we have the right witnesses

1243. to who David or who Jesus is and why he

1244. came and how he defeated death. It was

1245. not just anybody that rose from the

1246. dead. It was Jesus Christ of the seed of

  1247. David risen from

  1248. last point.

1249. God makes covenants with imperfect and

  1250. flawed people.

  1251. Sometimes furiously broken.

1252. David was a man after God's heart.

1253. He was seriously focused on God. But

1254. David was not a sinless man by any

  1255. stretch of the imagination.

1256. In 2 Samuel 6, we have David's sin in

1257. bringing the ark uh to Jerusalem and

1258. they didn't use Levites to carry it.

1259. They carried it on oxen. He wasn't being

1260. biblical and a man died because of that.

1261. That was before the Davidic covenant in

  1262. chapter 7.

  1263. And then in 2 Samuel 12, he David's

1264. confronted by the prophet Nathan with

1265. the whole business of Basheba and the

1266. the adultery and murder that David did.

1267. That was after the Davidica.

1268. And then in 2 Samuel 24, the last

1269. chapter of the book of Samuel, David

1270. numbers the people and all these people

  1271. die.

1272. And the only way to get out of it is for

1273. David at cost to himself

1274. to offer sacrifice to God

1275. on mount on the mountain that would

  1276. become the temple.

  1277. In 2 Samuel 24

  1278. in Romans 4,

1279. Paul picks out two people. first Jew,

1280. Abraham, and the and the most important

  1281. Jew, David, and illustrates

1282. they weren't saved by their good works.

1283. They were saved by the work of another,

  1284. Jesus Christ.

1285. And that ought to settled

1286. in the other argument. Well, may God

1287. speak to your heart. If you're not

1288. saved, how could you ignore this? This

1289. is the future. This is the future. The

1290. Bible's not just about something that

1291. happened long ago. It's about the

1292. something that happened long ago, but

  1293. it's also happening something that's

  1294. going to happen.

1295. And the early church announced it in

  1296. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

1297. And the early church wrote about it and

1298. preached about it all through all the

1299. way through the book of Acts.

1300. And that King David has a covenant

1301. that's never going to end because Jesus

1302. arose from the dead and is never going

  1303. to die again.

1304. Thank you, Father, for what we've looked

1305. at. Challenge us from your word. Bless

1306. us with your truth. We pray. Amen.

1307. And turn to page 704.

  1308. 74.

1309. >> What a mighty God we serve. What a

  1310. mighty God we serve.

1312. adore him as we go from this place.

1314. May the power of your love and the light

1315. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1316. world as we go from this place.
