  1. Open your Bibles this morning if you

  2. would.

  3. Going to begin this morning in the book

  4. of Colossians.

  5. Colossians.

  6. Started a new series

  7. major doctrines of the word of God.

  8. This lesson will be an introduction

  9. into the Godhead

  10. and ask I ask a question. The word of

  11. God asked a question. What is God's

  12. greatest image of himself?

  13. The Bible answers that, doesn't it?

  14. So, let's begin this morning in

  15. Colossians chapter 2.

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  16. A lot of these books were written to

  17. combat errors that were in the culture

  18. and there are a lot of errors in the

  19. culture. A lot of superstition, a lot of

  20. man's ideas about things and not God's

  21. ideas.

  22. So at this particular church, they

  23. thought it was not good to have been a

  24. be a body, be material,

  25. and it would be better if you were

  26. immaterial,

  27. maybe like a spirit or God. So it was

  28. very difficult for them to imagine that

  29. that God would become a man, would

  30. become a human being.

  31. So, we have some of the greatest verses

  32. in the New Testament about the Lord

  33. Jesus Christ

  34. doing that very thing.

  35. He's the preeminent one.

  36. Uh he's the one all the treasure is

  37. hidden in. And Paul warns them about

  38. being led away to something else and not

  39. to the person and the work of Christ.

  40. So here in chapter 2 and verse 9, I want

  41. to zero in on this verse. It's not a big

  42. verse, but there's a word in here that

  43. we want to begin with this morning. For

  44. in him, that'd be Christ dwelleth all

  45. the fullness of the godhead bodily.

  46. So we have this word godhead in the

  47. Greek. Um it it uh it helps us to see

  48. that you know the that there is one God

  49. which

  50. you know that's what we've been talking

  51. about. That's what the word of God

  52. reveals

  53. in Deuteronomy chapter 6. One

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  54. you know we have one God. The Jews began

  55. their day that way. They began that day

  56. with their children praying and praising

  57. God. There is one God. Yet he manifests

  58. himself

  59. into three people. The Father, the Son,

  60. and the Holy Spirit.

  61. That's the Godhead here

  62. in verse

  63. nine. So from the word of God,

  64. you know, that's where we get this,

  65. right? We this is not something that we

  66. dreamt up

  67. um or or men have dreamt up. You know,

  68. their doctrines are foolish.

  69. But the word of God tells us who the

  70. true God is, what the true God has done.

  71. And there is one God, the Bible says,

  72. and he has manifest himself in three

  73. different people.

  74. That's what Jesus said at the end of the

  75. book of Matthew.

  76. good place for us to recall where Jesus

  77. said to to what to do go and to teach

  78. uh the doctrine and the doctrine is that

  79. the name of the father the name of the

  80. son and of the holy spirit

  81. Jesus said teach these things and

  82. observe these things so it's important

  83. for the church to teach what Jesus said

  84. and abide in his doctrines

  85. and That's the purpose of the word of

  86. God. That's the purpose of

  87. the truth. So we might know what it is.

  88. We might believe what it is.

  89. And not only can we know these things

  90. about God,

  91. but we can have a personal relationship

  92. with this great God.

  93. And if you'll turn over to chapter 3,

  94. the same book Colossians

  95. here, Paul says, "If you then be risen

  96. with Christ,"

  97. that's what salvation means,

  98. you know, is that, you know, by faith

  99. we're saved

  100. by grace and not of works lest any man

  101. should boast. So, we're risen with

  102. Christ.

  103. That's Romans chapter 6, the

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  104. resurrection.

  105. We were dead in trespasses and sins and

  106. now we've been raised together with

  107. Christ. So this member of the Godhead

  108. that Paul zeros in on here says if we

  109. put our faith in him, we'll not only be

  110. saved, but we'll know him.

  111. So, you know, that's the great benefit

  112. now of of this great salvation.

  113. So we should seek those things which are

  114. above where Christ sits on the right

  115. hand of God. So we see here that

  116. you know this Godhead is much bigger

  117. than one person

  118. much bigger than just you know one event

  119. one act.

  120. He is seated at the right hand of God.

  121. So this this is a God who can do things.

  122. This is a God who has a will, a God who

  123. has purposes.

  124. And we're going to get into some of

  125. those things, but in the series, but

  126. before we get into these things, we I we

  127. want to see I want to see how big God

  128. is. I I want to know how big and great

  129. God is. So, we want to we want to set

  130. our affection on things above and not on

  131. things of the earth. We're dead and our

  132. life is hidden with Christ in God. And

  133. then here we have the his return

  134. who is our life. He shall appear then

  135. shall be we will appear with him in

  136. glory. So this great God who come to

  137. earth in the person of Christ you know

  138. we can know him. Not only can we know

  139. him we can we can seek him. Uh we can we

  140. can put our affections on him and our

  141. affections on you know the things above

  142. not on things on the earth. Well we

  143. can't do that without the word of God

  144. because we don't even know what those

  145. things are. We're we're ignorant. were

  146. foolish men.

  147. So Jesus said, "Teach these things and

  148. observe these things." And here Paul is

  149. so many years later, he's still doing

  150. that. The church, that's the

  151. responsibility of the church is for us

  152. to help each other one another do what

  153. Colossians here says, you know, that the

  154. Godhead has done something great uh for

  155. us. So, how can we know what the godhead

  156. has done for us without the word of God?

  157. It's impossible.

  158. As I mentioned last week,

  159. um we can't have a church without the

  160. word of God. We can't have Christianity

  161. without the word of God. That's how

  162. important it is.

  163. That's where men go astray and women go

  164. astray. They try to have a church

  165. without the word of God. That's a

  166. problem.

  167. So, we're dependent on this book. We're

  168. dependent on the doctrines of this book.

  169. We're dependent on this godhead uh to

  170. instruct us and to help us to know who

  171. he is and what he has done. And the word

  172. of God, as you can see here in

  173. Colossians

  174. uh chapter 2 and chapter 3, these verses

  175. that we've looked as we begin,

  176. we see there's a difference between, you

  177. know, God himself and what God has done.

  178. You say, "Well, that's pretty obvious.

  179. That's that's that's a small thing." No,

  180. it's not. It's a big thing. You know,

  181. God wants us to know him as a person.

  182. And then God wants us to know what he

  183. has done.

  184. So, as we begin this morning, those are

  185. some of the introductory thoughts. Turn

  186. over to the book of Romans,

  187. chapter one.

  188. That's how

  189. That's how we Gentiles know what's going

  190. on. I mean, we have the privileges now,

  191. not the Jews.

  192. They had the word of God. They had the

  193. privileges

  194. and and they messed up. That's what Paul

  195. says here uh in the book of Romans. And

  196. now there's still Jews that are saved,

  197. but

  198. you know, they have to come through the

  199. blood of Christ in the work of Christ,

  200. one the member of the Godhead who who

  201. come to earth. So they had all the

  202. prophecies. They should have known these

  203. things. You know, we Gentiles, we had we

  204. didn't have the promises. We didn't have

  205. anything. We're just a bunch of sinners.

  206. And and now we know who Christ is. He's

  207. God.

  208. And then we know what the Bible says. He

  209. came to his own. His own received him

  210. not. He's actually he actually is a is

  211. our Jewish Messiah.

  212. So here Paul tells the Romans

  213. in chapter one some very important

  214. things about

  215. God and the Godhead.

  216. What's going on here if you would look

  217. over in verse 20 and then I'll back up

  218. and read the first part. But I want to

  219. Here's our word over here in verse 20.

  220. It says

  221. for the invisible things of him from the

  222. creation of the world are clearly seen.

  223. So the Paul says that we can see

  224. creation.

  225. You know it's separate from God. He's

  226. above it. It answers to him. Uh the

  227. world God's above it. It answers to him.

  228. Everything in the world he's above it.

  229. Everything answers to him.

  230. And he says here being understood by the

  231. things that are made

  232. even his eternal power and godhead so

  233. that they are without excuse.

  234. So dealing with this godhead word we can

  235. see right here that Paul uses it as

  236. well. You know, when we think of God, we

  237. have one God as the Old Testament says.

  238. But then we uh we learn there's more to

  239. God than just one one person. There's

  240. the three three there

  241. here in chapter 1 verse one. Now I'll

  242. read this

  243. and Paul tells us, you know, what the

  244. Godhead is here. He says a servant of

  245. Jesus Christ called an apostle separated

  246. unto the gospel of God. So right away we

  247. see this Jesus Christ who's he

  248. which he had promised before by the

  249. prophets in the holy scripture. So Paul

  250. even tells us where

  251. in the old testament. So the godhead

  252. who made everything he he has revealed

  253. his great power in creation. But this

  254. God also now is going to reveal himself

  255. concerning his son Jesus Christ our Lord

  256. who was made the seed of David according

  257. to the flesh. So God sent his son

  258. uh through the Jewish nation

  259. through the seed of David.

  260. Jesus goes back to David

  261. in his humanity and declared to be the

  262. son of God with power.

  263. you know and and this word uh declared

  264. here means you know the power and the

  265. majesty of it.

  266. So you know this is where Jesus was

  267. before

  268. he came to earth. He was with the

  269. father. He's he's a member of the

  270. godhead. You know he has great power. He

  271. has um great majesty and the spirit of

  272. holiness by the resurrection of the

  273. dead. He's going to raise from the dead.

  274. And he did do that.

  275. by whom we have received grace and

  276. apostilhip for obedience to the faith

  277. among all the nations for his name's

  278. sake. So Paul said the Gentiles now it's

  279. whosoever will may come. We don't the

  280. Gentiles don't need one savior and the

  281. Jews need another savior. No Jesus work

  282. covers both. He died for the Gentiles

  283. and he died for the Jews. In fact, he

  284. died for everyone in every nation.

  285. And God wants this preached.

  286. Uh here they are making it to Rome just,

  287. you know, 60 years later.

  288. And Paul says, "To all that be in Rome,

  289. be loved of God and called saints. Grace

  290. to you and peace from God the Father and

  291. the Lord Jesus Christ." He's still

  292. talking about the Godhead.

  293. The Spirit is here. The Father is here.

  294. The Son is here. And then he says,"I

  295. thank my God through Christ

  296. that your faith is spoken of throughout

  297. the whole world. For God is my witness

  298. whom I serve with my spirit

  299. in the gospel of his son." That's what

  300. Paul calls him, the gospel of the son of

  301. God. That's who Jesus is. He's God's

  302. son.

  303. Without ceasing, I I make mention of you

  304. in my prayers, making requests, if any

  305. means, by length, that I might have a

  306. prosperous journey by the will of God to

  307. come to you. So, you know, Paul says

  308. there's there's one God, but that one

  309. this one God, this one godhead has, you

  310. know, three persons here. And that's

  311. that's what the word of God says. And

  312. remember last week we read in in Acts

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  313. chapter 17 where Paul told the uh those

  314. unsaved people there that we're the

  315. offspring of God. You know, that's who

  316. we are. So when we look at at what God

  317. has done, God has he's made the

  318. incredible creation that we see.

  319. It it never stops,

  320. you know, and and all the seasons and

  321. and everything going on. uh the animals

  322. and and and their instincts,

  323. all those great things. How can you not

  324. see God in creation?

  325. In fact, Paul says, "You're without

  326. excuse. You better see him in creation."

  327. But then he says that something here as

  328. well about the son of God that that's

  329. who God is manifesting himself in and

  330. through. This is the mystery

  331. that Paul wrote to Timothy about chapter

  332. 3:1 15 about the mystery of godliness

  333. and the mystery of God. So the world

  334. creation is is fruit from God. Man God

  335. made us. We're fruit from God. He made

  336. us in his image. And then we see here

  337. that the son of God is fruit from God.

  338. He sent him. He sent his only begotten

  339. son. This is the great mystery.

  340. So this is the the great unity

  341. that there is in the Godhead. God the

  342. father, God the son, and God the holy

  343. spirit. And when you think of the

  344. trinity, you think of the godhead.

  345. That's one of the very first things that

  346. we should think about and know is that

  347. uh they're united.

  348. They're united in their purpose and who

  349. they are and what they're doing. One man

  350. said, "God is not merely one. He is the

  351. only one."

  352. And this trinity and these things are

  353. not easy to understand.

  354. But just because we don't understand

  355. them, that doesn't, you know, that

  356. doesn't give us the right to not believe

  357. them. You know, there's a lot of things

  358. that even in the secular world that, you

  359. know, we don't know a lot of. My dad was

  360. an electrician and I don't know anything

  361. about electricity. I know to stay away

  362. from it. You know, I've seen people hurt

  363. by it bad. So, I don't mess with it. You

  364. know, call the call the electrician.

  365. So, there are things out there that we

  366. don't understand, but they still exist.

  367. That's just one example.

  368. So saying that you don't understand God.

  369. Well, welcome to the club.

  370. You say God's greater than my brain.

  371. Well, welcome to the club.

  372. You know, that's why we have his word.

  373. That's why we, you know, we spend time

  374. um not only in, you know, devotions and,

  375. you know, our our uh our leisure time,

  376. if you will, with God, if there is such

  377. a thing, but we also have this this time

  378. when we come in and we look at the depth

  379. of the word of God, what's here, and to

  380. see who God is. And you know, we need

  381. the word of God. We have, you know, we

  382. have no access to him, no understanding

  383. of him

  384. outside of his word. What do men say?

  385. Well, men say there is no God. You know,

  386. the fool said in his heart, there is no

  387. God. That's what that's what they say.

  388. And and God God says, "Well, come come

  389. and let me show you who I am. I'll

  390. introduce you to myself." as well. Man

  391. says that there are many gods.

  392. You know, there's not just one. There's

  393. many gods. And you can find your

  394. favorite god and we're all going to end

  395. up at the same place in heaven. That's a

  396. lie. That's an enormous lie.

  397. We're not all going to end up in heaven.

  398. Only those who find God through his son

  399. Jesus Christ, who he sent is his perfect

  400. image to this earth. The Greek gods,

  401. they're they're foolish gods, aren't

  402. they? They Michael read that book on

  403. them. The Greek gods, they're at war.

  404. They can't even get along.

  405. Well, that's the opposite of our God.

  406. He's united. He's getting along very

  407. well

  408. uh with himself, within the Godhead.

  409. So, this is a great mystery that must be

  410. revealed to us. You know, we're not

  411. going to go down to the library and find

  412. a nice book to read. Although there are

  413. some

  414. but this is the book where we we find

  415. out these things you know that God is

  416. one yet uh he's the triune God and

  417. that's what that's what Paul said about

  418. Jesus in the book of Ephesians he being

  419. the mystery of of God and and a mystery

  420. not in a sense of a you know we can't

  421. know but in the sense that God has to

  422. show us you know we're not going to get

  423. there. We can't climb up on our own. You

  424. know, we need a new birth. We need the

  425. Holy Spirit. We need the scriptures. We

  426. need all those things that we've already

  427. talked about in order to know this God

  428. and then devote ourselves

  429. uh to his word. It's it's simply a

  430. matter of revelation.

  431. You know, the people that get to know

  432. are the are the ones who come to God the

  433. right way.

  434. And those who come to God the right way,

  435. God said, "I will in John, remember that

  436. verse, uh, I will make make myself known

  437. to you. Any man have a deep rooted

  438. determination,

  439. God's will to practice, he will know the

  440. truth."

  441. So once we've been given the truth, you

  442. know, and and we've seen we see the

  443. animals, we see ourselves, we see

  444. creation, we see all these things around

  445. us, then, you know, um God decides now

  446. to become a man.

  447. We're men and women, but God says, "I'm

  448. going to become a man." That's that's a

  449. pretty tall order for God to become a

  450. man, huh?

  451. But we know that from Psalm 2,

  452. don't turn there. We're going to look at

  453. that a little bit tonight. But there we

  454. see Jehovah has a son.

  455. And uh he the Old Testament talks about

  456. him being begotten, the only begotten

  457. son. God has one son that he begott.

  458. That's what John 3:16 says. For God so

    John 3:16

  459. loved the world, he gave his only

  460. begotten son that whosoever believes in

  461. him will not perish but have everlasting

  462. life.

  463. We're going to look at Hebrews chapter 1

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  464. here in a second, but that whole chapter

  465. is just filled

  466. with things like that.

  467. And you know, some people in their

  468. foolishness think, you know, God the

  469. Father became God the Son, God the Son

  470. became the Holy Spirit, and now we've

  471. got the Spirit, so we've got the whole

  472. Godhead. That that's foolishness.

  473. That's not what the Bible says.

  474. There there are three independent gods.

  475. Um remember Jesus baptism, they all

  476. showed up. God the Father, this is my

  477. beloved son in whom I am well pleased.

  478. The spirit descended on him like a dove.

  479. So here we have all three members of the

  480. Trinity doing something at the same

  481. time. They couldn't be individuals and

  482. you know, you know, Jesus didn't say,

  483. "Okay, thank you, Father, and now I'm

  484. going to turn into the Holy Spirit."

  485. That's foolishness.

  486. There are three independent beings

  487. within the Godhead. Turn to 1

  488. Corinthians 8.

  489. 1 Corinthians chapter 8

    1 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  490. verse one.

  491. Read verses one here. Now, as touching

  492. things off for the idols, we know that

  493. we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs

  494. up, but love edifies. If any man think

  495. he knoweth anything, he knows nothing as

  496. he ought to know. So, you know, say,

  497. "Well, I know something you don't know."

  498. I mean, that's pride.

  499. If any man think he knoweth anything, he

  500. knows nothing. If any man love God,

  501. the same is known by him.

  502. Look at the singular God. He didn't say

  503. gods.

  504. Singular God. As concerning therefore

  505. eating of those things that are offered

  506. and sacrificed unto idols, we know that

  507. an idol is nothing but something in the

  508. world and there is no other god but one.

  509. So there's Paul saying there's not three

  510. gods. There's only one.

  511. And he goes on to say,

  512. "For though there be others called gods,

  513. you know, there's plenty of idols, you

  514. know, they're um they're plural,

  515. whether in heaven or in earth or as many

  516. gods many and lords many." Yeah. Oh,

  517. yeah. The false ones are many. They

  518. outnumber the true one. But he's still

  519. calling God one God here.

  520. If God was something else, here's the

  521. perfect place for Paul to say, "By the

  522. way, God's this and God's that." No, he

  523. says God is one God.

  524. For though there be those that are

  525. called God in heaven and earth, excuse

  526. me, verse six, but unto us there is but

  527. one God. And here he listened. The

  528. father of whom all things we and him

  529. creation were made in his image. One

  530. Lord Jesus

  531. by whom are all things and we by him.

  532. So God exists in three distinct persons,

  533. personalities. It's okay for us to say

  534. person

  535. about God. Jesus is a person.

  536. The Holy Spirit's invisible.

  537. Uh God the Father is invisible.

  538. But it's okay to think of them as as a

  539. person so we can re Persons have

  540. personalities. People have

  541. personalities. So in in a sense, you

  542. know, God has a personality. Each one is

  543. distinct. Father, Son, and the Holy

  544. Spirit.

  545. And uh, you know, that's what the word

  546. of God says here for us. You remember

  547. what uh,

  548. did I read verse six? Yeah. There is one

  549. God.

  550. You guys remember what James chapter 2

    James 2:19

  551. verse 19 says? I'll quote it for you.

  552. James says, "Thou believest that there

  553. is one God. Thou doest well. The demons

  554. believe and tremble."

  555. So we have one God, not three. But we

  556. have a trinity, a triunity, a triune God

  557. in the Godhead. God the Father, God the

  558. Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

  559. And you know this is a mystery as the

  560. Bible says and you know when you're

  561. first introduced to these things the

  562. these things may be new to you

  563. but it doesn't change the truth. You you

  564. have to I have to adjust to what the

  565. book says

  566. you know and and anything short of this

  567. is not not good. Um you know Jesus said

  568. without without me you can do nothing.

  569. That means that we can't go to heaven.

  570. and and he said, "You're going to die in

  571. your sins unless you believe I am."

  572. So, we're going to see some of these

  573. things as we go through this series

  574. about the deity of Christ and these

  575. things uh that are going on. But what

  576. happens to husband and wife? Michael's

  577. getting married. Pray for him

  578. to terra in a couple weeks. But what is

  579. that? Well, the Bible says

  580. father and uh

  581. man and a woman will leave their father

  582. and mother and the two will become what?

  583. They two become one flesh.

  584. So we have things like that in the Bible

  585. where two become one. And uh you know

  586. that's that's

  587. difficult to describe I guess or

  588. difficult but it's exactly what happens.

  589. The two become one.

  590. And what God has put together, let no

  591. man put us under. So we use things like

  592. that to describe Mary. The two become

  593. one. Well, well, God is just one God.

  594. There's only one God. Yet he exists in

  595. three people in the Trinity.

  596. And we also have our our uh word

  597. trinity.

  598. We body. That's what we can see. Soul,

  599. what we can't see. And our spirit or our

  600. personality, what we can't see. So, two

  601. parts of us are immaterial. We can't

  602. see. One part of us is material.

  603. And then we're going to be made all

  604. immaterial when we get when we go to

  605. heaven. We got to flesh and blood cannot

  606. inherit the kingdom of God.

  607. We must be chained.

  608. So we have things like that in the Bible

  609. to help us along the way to understand

  610. what some of these things are.

  611. You know, some of you have flown on

  612. planes and some of you have not. Some of

  613. you

  614. are very uncomfortable flying.

  615. And I I guess I started out that way

  616. because I didn't you're like, man, I

  617. don't know if I want to get in a plane

  618. and fly, you know, at 30,000 ft, 500

  619. miles an hour for 15 hours.

  620. We did that going to Africa. Wasn't

  621. quite as long going to he's getting

  622. ready for that trip.

  623. But, you know, we

  624. take some metal,

  625. we take a couple jet engines and we

  626. strap a couple jet engines to a pile of

  627. metal and load everybody up on it and

  628. put somebody behind the wheel and take

  629. off and land halfway around the world in

  630. 15 hours. That's that's incredible.

  631. But it takes a little bit of faith

  632. to do that.

  633. You know, that's what help God God

  634. helped me with my faith

  635. in in these planes and these gizmos and

  636. these gadgets. So

  637. ultimately, we're trusting him.

  638. But at the end of the day, you know,

  639. there are people that will put their

  640. faith in Delta, but they won't put their

  641. faith in God,

  642. you know, and and God's much greater

  643. than than a jet, much greater than a

  644. plane. He deserves, you know, all of our

  645. faith and and uh, you know, once we know

  646. the truth, then our faith can lay hold

  647. of him. That's what happens when we get

  648. into the word of God. We're,

  649. you know, maybe we're a little shaky at

  650. first. Maybe we don't understand at

  651. first and and and our knees knock a bit,

  652. but once we get into the word of God,

  653. we see that this triune God who says

  654. he's one, yet he exists in three people,

  655. you know, and we should believe that. We

  656. should rest our faith in that. That's

  657. what Hebrews says. Turn over to Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  658. chapter 1.

  659. Now, Andreas, don't you die in a plane

  660. crash on the way to Argentina. You just

  661. blew my

  662. illustration.

  663. Pray for him.

  664. So

  665. here in Hebrews chapter 1,

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  666. so the Godhead is united as one, yet it

  667. exists in three persons with three

  668. personalities that are specific to them.

  669. You know, like some people think the

  670. father became the son, the son became

  671. the holy spirit. That's that is so

  672. wrong. But they are they're they're in

  673. within the godhead, but they have

  674. distinct personalities. They have

  675. distinct things that they are and

  676. distinct things that they have done to

  677. reveal themselves to us. And they're

  678. perfect, by the way. They don't need us.

  679. They don't need uh any help. Uh we don't

  680. add anything to them other than the

  681. glory that's going to be Christ at the

  682. end of the age.

  683. And here in Hebrews chapter 1,

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  684. these these first two chapters of

  685. Hebrews are so important.

  686. because this really helps us. This this

  687. was written later on. This was written

  688. after

  689. uh whoever wrote Hebrews saw the

  690. problems with the Jews were having with

  691. moving on and and you know trusting

  692. Christ and then and resting in him.

  693. So we have a lot here in these first two

  694. chapters. Well, if Jesus was just a man,

  695. how could we do that?

  696. It's just a He's just our best man. We

  697. found our best man and it happened to be

  698. Jesus because he was just so good. He

  699. went about doing good and all those

  700. wonderful things and then we sacrificed

  701. him to God.

  702. Um that would do no good. He's uh a man

  703. cannot pay for man's sin.

  704. So if Jesus is only a man, he's not

  705. deity, then we're still dead in our

  706. sins. That's what Paul told the

  707. Corinthians.

  708. So we need to think that way. We need to

  709. understand this great gospel. And here

  710. in Hebrews 1,

  711. you guys are familiar with this. God at

  712. times in diverse manner spoke to the

  713. fathers by the prophets.

  714. That describes the Old Testament. Now

  715. there's much more to the Old Testament

  716. than that.

  717. But has in these last days spoken unto

  718. us in his son. And his son here is its

  719. deity. The son of God. God became a man.

  720. He appointed heir of all things.

  721. God the father appointed his son heir of

  722. all things. That's why he's more than

  723. just a man.

  724. And every knee will bow. Every tongue

  725. will confess. If Jesus was just a man,

  726. how is he going to overcome Satan? How

  727. is he going to overcome all these demons

  728. and a third uh of of heaven that's

  729. rebelled against him and the father and

  730. the Holy Spirit? If Jesus is not God,

  731. he's in big trouble here.

  732. But he is God

  733. who being the brightness of his glory

  734. and the expressed image of his person.

  735. Well, there's what Paul told the

  736. Colossians.

  737. Who's Jesus? He is the expressed image

  738. of the Godhead

  739. and upholding all things by the word of

  740. his power

  741. has by himself purged our sins,

  742. sat down on the right hand of the

  743. majesty on high. So again we got this we

  744. got this view of the Godhead

  745. God

  746. the Godhead one of them became a man one

  747. of them come to earth one of them is the

  748. brightness of his glory the image of his

  749. person that will be Christ and in him is

  750. everything

  751. and he by himself purged our sins

  752. and being made and then you say how

  753. about the best angel if we got we can't

  754. get the best man to die for us. We were

  755. still going to hell. What if we got the

  756. best angel?

  757. A holy angel to die. We're not angels.

  758. He can't angels can't pay for sin.

  759. As he has inherited obtained a more

  760. excellent name than they, for unto which

  761. of the angels said he at any time,

  762. you're my son?

  763. None.

  764. Not to Gabriel, not to Michael,

  765. not to the holiest, certainly not to

  766. Satan after what he's done. He's in

  767. serious trouble.

  768. Jesus is not a brother to an angel.

  769. He's not a brother to the human beings.

  770. He is in a sense that he became uh lower

  771. to bring us back to God. That's here at

  772. the end of chapter two. But he could

  773. never do that without the first part.

  774. Then again he brought the first begotten

  775. into the world and let all the angels of

  776. God worship him.

  777. When did Jesus become

  778. God?

  779. Was there a point in time remember his

  780. ministry? We have three gospels.

  781. Remember poor John? He in the book of

  782. Revelation he he worshiped an angel and

  783. he got in a little bit of trouble for

  784. that.

  785. uh you know and and other people have

  786. made that mistake. They see something

  787. majestic and they worship it.

  788. But but Jesus,

  789. he never turned that away.

  790. Worship.

  791. The ladies did it.

  792. You know, he said, "Leave him alone.

  793. They're doing this for my burial." They

  794. worshiped him. He's God.

  795. But when did all that begin? And that

  796. Jesus at some point, did he become God

  797. after his resurrection?

  798. Did he become God when you know he was a

  799. good guy and he went about doing good

  800. and he finally he did enough good deeds

  801. and he became God?

  802. No. That's all foolishness.

  803. He was born God.

  804. When was the first time he was

  805. worshiped?

  806. You guys remember Bethlehem?

  807. You guys remember the the wise men

  808. What did he do? He said, "We worship

  809. him." And everybody was like, "What?

  810. This little baby?" They're like, "He

  811. he's God.

  812. He's God in the flesh." Remember uh

  813. Anna? Remember Simeon? They did the same

  814. thing.

  815. God in the flesh.

  816. Jesus was God when he was born. He was

  817. God when he was in the womb.

  818. At no point did he ever become God.

  819. He's always been God.

  820. And now he says here,

  821. you have laid and and he's connected

  822. with creation.

  823. You Lord from the beginning have laid

  824. the foundation of the earth and the

  825. heaven and the works are of your hands.

  826. Wow.

  827. That little baby made everything in this

  828. universe,

  829. including us.

  830. They shall perish.

  831. You will remain.

  832. They will become old as does a garment.

  833. But as a vesture shalt thou fold him up,

  834. and they will be changed,

  835. and uh thou art the same, and thy year

  836. shall not fail.

  837. What what a saying here about Jesus.

  838. He's going to come back.

  839. Everything's going to answer to him.

  840. He's going to renew everything.

  841. He's going to have a kingdom

  842. wherein dwelleth righteousness and that

  843. includes us. And he says verse 30, which

  844. of the angels did God say that to?

  845. Gabriel,

  846. Michael

  847. the angel.

  848. No, none of them. No angel did God say

  849. this to. He only said it to his son. He

  850. says, "Now are they ministering

  851. spirits?" And he goes on and then

  852. chapter two is just as good.

  853. Therefore, we ought to give the more

  854. earnest heed to the things which we have

  855. heard, lest at any time we should let

  856. them slip.

  857. God doesn't want us to let this

  858. slip.

  859. His son became

  860. a man and he's taken over this universe.

  861. So

  862. whatever rulers and leaders we have out

  863. there, it's only temporary.

  864. Remember, he's the King of Kings. He's

  865. the Lord of Lords.

  866. You know, he the Psalms, one of them

  867. Psalms back there, 80 something says,

  868. "God the Father says to God the Son, I'm

  869. going to make you a king.

  870. You think God's going to fail?"

  871. And here we have, we say, "Well, sin's

  872. gotten in the way. How can God have a

  873. king? How can God get all this back if

  874. we've sinned and we've fallen short?"

  875. Well, that's what the salvation's all

  876. about. God died for us. God shed his

  877. blood for us.

  878. And you know there are a lot of people

  879. that don't take this serious and don't

  880. take God serious. Why? Well, God takes

  881. this serious.

  882. Verse three, how shall we escape if we

  883. neglect so great a salvation?

  884. Which at the first began to be spoken of

  885. by the Lord

  886. and was confir confirmed unto them that

  887. heard him. God started way way back

  888. there

  889. with this plan.

  890. God bearing them witness both with signs

  891. and wonders and diverse miracles and

  892. gifts of the Holy Spirit according to

  893. his own will. He does it again. What

  894. what angel did God say he would do this

  895. to or for?

  896. If Jesus is just a man, we're in big

  897. trouble. He's much more.

  898. If he's just an angel, we're in trouble.

  899. He's much more.

  900. The writer says in verse 9, we see

  901. Jesus. That's who we're looking for.

  902. He's God.

  903. He's the great I am.

  904. He said, "Come unto me all ye that labor

  905. and are heavy laden, and I will give you

  906. rest. Learn of me. I'm lowly and I am

  907. meek. And take my burden upon you. Take

  908. my yoke upon you." And he as well

  909. suffered to death and crowned under

  910. glory. So, okay, God come to earth. But,

  911. you know, we rolled the red carpet out

  912. for him. We we put him in his seat in

  913. the temple and we everybody got around

  914. and fanned God, you know, and we uh told

  915. him how great he was. No, it says he he

  916. was a servant.

  917. That's what this says.

  918. A suffering servant. Well, where's that

  919. at?

  920. Isaiah

  921. 55. all all through the Old Testament.

  922. God's son is going to do something when

  923. he gets here. We have verse after verse

  924. after verse on this one.

  925. For it became him from whom are all

  926. things. Wait a minute. That's what he

  927. said way back there in chapter two.

  928. There's nothing that Jesus

  929. didn't is not going to take over.

  930. There's nothing, you know, there's no

  931. there's not going to be anyone, you

  932. know, between the Godhead and Jesus. He

  933. is the Godhead.

  934. And that's what this says. And whoever

  935. Jesus says goes into his kingdom,

  936. they're the ones going into his kingdom.

  937. For it became him from whom are all

  938. things and whom are all things to bring

  939. many sons to glory. That's us.

  940. So Jesus didn't die to bring back the

  941. fallen angels. No, he he did something

  942. far greater and far more important to

  943. God. That was to die for Adam's race.

  944. And that's what he did. And he's the

  945. captain of their salvation,

  946. perfect

  947. through suffering.

  948. For both he that sanctifies and they

  949. that sanctified are all one. So, we're

  950. one with Christ because he's God,

  951. because he's the son of God, because

  952. he's the creator of of heaven and earth,

  953. because he is so perfect and so

  954. righteous and and did such a great job

  955. paying for all of our sins. And now, as

  956. many people as we can get in can go to

  957. heaven,

  958. not because of anything we've done, but

  959. because of what he has done.

  960. And then he did even more. He knocked

  961. out the fear of death.

  962. at the end of this chapter. It's just

  963. amazing these two chapters here. And

  964. then look at verse 18.

  965. For in that he himself has suffered

  966. being tempted that he's able to help

  967. them that are tempted. You say, "Well,

  968. if he's God, he he he doesn't understand

  969. what I'm going through."

  970. Wrong. He does understand what we're

  971. going through. And that's what this is

  972. about. How high and holy and glorious is

  973. God and Jesus to come to the sinful

  974. earth and become a worm basically

  975. that we spit on

  976. that we put a crown of thorns on that we

  977. laughed at

  978. and he said father forgive them for they

  979. know not what they do

  980. that's who this person is Christ

  981. many reject his deity

  982. That's a dangerous thing. You can see

  983. right here what the word of God says.

  984. You You reject the deity of Christ,

  985. you're in serious trouble. You're still

  986. in your sin. I didn't say that. The word

  987. of God says that.

  988. So, you know, how has God shown us his

  989. love? Well, the person and the work of

  990. Jesus.

  991. So, if Jesus were just a man, not God,

  992. well, how could God show us his love?

  993. If Jesus was just a man, well, he's more

  994. than a man. He's God himself. God says,

  995. "Here's how I will love you." Go back to

  996. First John.

  997. 1 John

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  998. chapter 4,

  999. Paul said 2 Corinthians chapter five,

1000. excuse me, 2 Corinthians, yeah, he said

1001. the love of Christ constrains us.

1002. And when he says that, he's not talking

1003. Jesus is not a man,

1004. not man's love. This is God's love.

  1005. We're constrained by God's love.

1006. God showed us what love is. A man

  1007. didn't.

1008. God showed us what love is. And here in

1009. we have this verse in in First John.

1010. I'm going to find it.

1011. This whole section is upon is on this

  1012. very subject.

1013. He says in verse 7,

1014. the Bible says we're beloved.

1015. Well, when did we go from not being

1016. loved to being beloved? Well, we we were

1017. never not loved by God.

1018. God so loved the world, he gave his only

1019. begotten son, whosoever will may come.

1020. God loves us. And then we become beloved

1021. when we were put in Christ.

1022. We took God up on his offer.

1023. Not man, not humans, not angels.

1024. We took God up on his offer. That's what

  1025. this says.

1026. Beloved, let us love one another for

  1027. love is of God.

  1028. So

1029. Christ displaying his love for us at the

1030. cross. He was just a man. John couldn't

1031. say this. Well, he was just a man. He

  1032. wasn't God.

1033. But we know he is God. And and for love

1034. is of God. Everyone that loves is born

1035. of God and knows God.

  1036. That's what changes

1037. once we know God. Once we're born from

1038. above, once we take God up on his offer,

1039. that he loved us and died for us,

  1040. we become

1041. beloved and we're able to love

  1042. one another and him.

1043. How can you not love God? He's perfect.

1044. He never made a mistake.

1045. The struggle was with one another

1046. because we make a lot of mistakes, don't

  1047. we?

1048. He that loves not God knows not God.

1049. For God is love. John's so bold to say

1050. people that don't love are they don't

1051. know God. It's it's something else in

  1052. them.

1053. It might be lust. It might be luck. It

1054. might be uh wisdom. It might be their

1055. intellect. You know, there a lot of

1056. things we can plug in there that that

1057. everybody thinks is love. That's not the

1058. love of God. The love of God is who

1059. Christ is and what Christ has done. He

  1060. died for us sinners.

1061. That's what he says. And this was

  1062. manifest.

1063. That means displayed. God did something

  1064. so we could see.

1065. That's what the miracles were. Jesus

1066. raised the dead so we could see he's

  1067. God.

1068. Jesus loved the prostitutes that washed

1069. his feet so we could see what love from

  1070. God is.

1071. That's what he says. The love of God

  1072. toward us.

1073. God sent his only begotten son.

1074. You don't doubt the deity of Jesus.

1075. You're denying the love of God

  1076. when you do that.

1077. He came into the world that we might

1078. live through him. That's where it all

  1079. began. That's where it's all at. That's

1080. how we're all going to get. That's the

  1081. bus we're on

1082. here in his love. Not that we love God.

1083. We didn't do anything special.

1084. Our our thoughts were not of him. Our

1085. ways were not of him. Our words were not

  1086. of him.

1087. We were dead in trespasses and sins. And

1088. God said, "These sinners are whom I

  1089. love.

1090. Come, come unto me all ye that labor and

1091. heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

1092. And that's what Jesus did. Here is love,

  1093. beloved.

1094. Because he that loved us sent his own

  1095. son to be

1096. the propitiation for our sins. Where's

  1097. God's love displayed?

  1098. That's the cross.

1099. If he's not God, then a man can't pay

1100. for our sin. If Jesus is just a man,

1101. we're still dead in our sin. That's what

  1102. Paul told the Corinthians,

1103. you know. So, um, you know, God is

1104. absolutely perfect. He is absolutely

1105. full of joy. God needs nothing.

1106. You know, he's complete in himself and

1107. he's loved us sinners and made us

1108. complete in Christ. We lack nothing now.

1109. All we all we lack is a transformation.

1110. And beloved, if we so loved us, so we

1111. ought to love one another. What an

  1112. example he is.

1113. And this is just an incredible section

1114. on the love of God here.

1115. And that's what 2 Corinthians turn to

  1116. Exodus 33.

  1117. Exodus

  1118. 30 3

  1119. verse 12.

1120. God did nothing out of impulse. God has

1121. done nothing out of frustration. God has

1122. done nothing out of revenge.

  1123. Yet,

1124. we're still in this window

1125. of his grace and his love and his mercy.

1126. And God had this plan

  1127. before

1128. you existed, before I existed.

  1129. And everything that God

  1130. begins, he finishes.

1131. Not one thing in the Bible that God

  1132. didn't finish.

1133. And our salvation is one of those

1134. things. When we know who God is, we know

1135. that Jesus is God. We know to what

1136. extent and what end God went to save us.

1137. Romans says, "How shall we freely give

  1138. us everything else?"

1139. Uh took the greatest thing God had.

1140. God said, "Take him. Take my son." It

1141. just fascinates me that he handed him

1142. off to Mary in the manger in Bethlehem.

  1143. Incredible, isn't it?

  1144. And here in Exodus

  1145. in verse 12,

  1146. morning.

1147. And Moses said unto the Lord,

1148. "See thou sayest unto me, bring up the

  1149. people,

1150. and thou has not let me know when thou

1151. wil sin with me, yet thou has said, I

1152. know thee by name, and thou has also

1153. found grace in your sight."

1154. So God knows us. He knows He knows us

1155. better than we know ourselves.

1156. He knows our thoughts. He knows our

1157. ways. He knows all these things about

1158. us. Yet he still loves us.

  1159. And here Moses

1160. in verse 13 says, "Now therefore I pray

1161. thee, if I have found grace in your

1162. sight, show me now your ways

1163. that I may know thee that I might find

1164. grace in your sight and consider that

1165. the nation is your people."

1166. And he said unto me, "My presence shall

1167. I go with thee, and I will give thee

1168. rest." That was God's response.

1169. After all this nation did, after all

  1170. Moses did,

1171. God said, "I'll go with you. I'll give

1172. you rest and I will show you who I am."

  1173. There's not a greater thing for a human

1174. being than to know who God is and to

1175. have this rest that he has promised. Now

1176. look over in verse, excuse me, chapter

  1177. 34

  1178. verse 5.

1179. And the Lord descended in the cloud and

1180. stood upon him there and to proclaim the

  1181. name of the Lord.

1182. And the Lord passed by before him and

  1183. proclaimed,

  1184. "The Lord

  1185. God merciful,

  1186. gracious,

  1187. long-suffering,

1188. abundant in goodness and truth, keeping

  1189. mercy for thousands,

  1190. forgiving iniquity and transgressions

  1191. and sin."

1192. This is all before Jesus ever come to

1193. earth. Well, how can God do this? He He

1194. knew one of the member of the Trinity

1195. was going to take care of the problem

1196. that we have of sin.

1197. God won't clear the guilty. He's not

1198. going to let us off. That's not what

  1199. he's going to do.

1200. Visiting the iniquities of the fathers

1201. to the children, the children to their

1202. children, to the third, fourth

1203. generation. God says, I I'm just not

1204. going to do this once. I'm going to do

  1205. it for every generation.

1206. And here we are, how many thousands of

1207. years after Moses wrote this.

1208. Moses made haste. He bowed his head

1209. toward the earth and he worshiped.

  1210. That's what we're to do. We're not to

1211. bring our filthy rags to God. He doesn't

1212. want them. He doesn't need them.

1213. He wants us to worship him and praise

  1214. him because he's merciful, because he's

  1215. gracious, because he's long-suffering,

1216. because he's abundant in goodness and

1217. truth and abundant in mercy.

  1218. That's why.

1219. And Moses made haste. He bowed his head

1220. toward the earth and he worshiped and he

  1221. said,

1222. "If now I have found grace in your

1223. sight, oh Lord, let the Lord, I pray,

1224. thee, go among us, for these are stiff

1225. necked people. Pardon our iniquity and

1226. our sin and take us for your

  1227. inheritance."

  1228. Wow.

  1229. And God says,

  1230. "Behold, I will make a covenant."

1231. So God took all this upon himself.

1232. As sinners, we need mercy, grace. We

1233. need we need everything that God has.

  1234. And God says, "I'll I'll be there. I'll

1235. be your guide. I I will find you. Rest."

1236. As sinners, rest. And these things rest

1237. in the person and the work of Christ.

1238. He's the face of God. We saw David in

  1239. Psalm 27, remember?

  1240. Look at Isaiah 63:9.

    Isaiah 63:9

  1241. I got to quit.

  1242. Isaiah 63:9.

    Isaiah 63:9

1243. How foolish we are to think we can take

1244. care of our sin. How foolish we are to

1245. think we can work our way into heaven.

  1246. How foolish we are

1247. after God has made a a grand provision

1248. that we need to get in his word and find

  1249. Isaiah 63

1250. and verse 9. In all their afflictions he

1251. was afflicted and the angel of his

1252. presence saved them. And in his love and

1253. in his pity, he redeemed them. He bore

1254. them and he carried them all the days of

  1255. old. That's our God.

1256. We don't have to run from him. We can

1257. run to him. He's abundant mercy. It's

1258. incredible what the word of God says

1259. about him. He's plenteous in grace. He's

  1260. plenteous in mercy.

  1261. So

1262. you know we ask the question then what

1263. is the grace of God? What is the mercy

1264. of God? What it's the person of Jesus

1265. Christ. That's why the wise men came to

1266. worship him. Here's God in flesh

1267. to take away our sins and to take our

  1268. burdens

1269. and to bring ourselves to him. What an

1270. amazing thing God has done for us.

1271. That's the wisdom of God, isn't it?

1272. Let's pray. Father, we thank you this

  1273. morning

  1274. uh for your word.

  1275. We certainly couldn't

1276. think these great thoughts, Father, that

1277. you've given to us without your word.

1278. And truly, we're sinners. Truly, we have

  1279. a burden.

1280. Truly, we need your mercy. We need your

1281. grace. We need your longsuffering.

1282. Um, we need the Holy Spirit within us.

1283. We need the word of God. We need one

  1284. another.

1285. We thank you for these grand provisions

1286. that you have made. Most of all, paying

  1287. for our sin

1288. as far as the east is from the west and

1289. you will not remember our transgressions

1290. anymore. This is a great salvation and

1291. we thank you for it. Jesus name. Amen.

  1292. >> Hi.

  1293. >> Hi Martha.

1294. Lord, as we go from this place,

1295. loving you more, trusting you more.

1296. May the power of your love and the light

1297. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1298. world. As we go from this place,
