  1. not been uh involved in your services

  2. because thanks to what brother Troy does

  3. back here with the uh videos and the um

  4. YouTube uh postings,

  5. um we quite often actually tune in to

  6. listen to either uh Pastor Bill or

  7. Brother Steve and his lessons. And uh we

  8. enjoy uh being in worship with you folks

  9. uh as we um tune in uh by way of the

  10. internet. I uh am great grateful to see

  11. a pretty good crowd here today for

  12. Athens Bible Church. You know, um I'm

  13. going to talk this morning about what we

  14. call the Lord's Prayer. Now, when I was

  15. a young man growing up, my father,

  16. Pastor Charles Lusher, pastored at

  17. Tabernacle Baptist Church in Chilikoth,

  18. Ohio. And um

  19. this seems hard to believe, but back

  20. then the morning congregations, morning

  21. service on Sundays were usually between

  22. about four and 600 people.

  23. And my dad had a habit, I think he

  24. picked it up when he was a chaplain

  25. during World War II, uh, leading large

  26. groups of people in what we call the

  27. Lord's Prayer. He'd have his Sunday

  28. morning opening prayer and then he

  29. would, uh, come to the end of his prayer

  30. and he said, "And let us all pray

  31. together even as our Lord taught us to

  32. pray, our Father which are in heaven."

  33. and he would go through what we refer to

  34. as the Lord's prayer. And I I've thought

  35. about that a lot since. You know, that

  36. prayer starts

  37. our father.

  38. And unless a person

  39. has been born again by faith in Jesus

  40. Christ, we cannot say that God is our

  41. father. People argue and they say,

  42. "Well, it's in the sense that God is the

  43. creator of all." And so, in that sense,

  44. he's everybody's father. Well, not

  45. spiritually speaking. Yes, he is the

  46. creator of all. Jesus uh is the creator

  47. of all, but Jesus said to the Pharisees

  48. and his generation, "Ye are of your

  49. father, the devil." So, not everybody is

  50. a child of God. You have to come into

  51. God's family by means of birth. Being

  52. born again. How are you born again?

  53. Well, I hope that all of you know, but

  54. maybe someone out there on the internet

  55. would like to know. How are you born

  56. again? It tells me in John chapter one,

  57. as many as received him, to them, no

  58. more, no less, just them. To them gave

  59. he power to become the children,

  60. literally the techia in Greek, the born

  61. ones of God. You have to receive him

  62. into your heart as your savior.

  63. Acknowledge that you're a sinner and

  64. acknowledge your faith that he is God in

  65. the flesh who died in your place upon

  66. the cross to pay the debt of your sins.

  67. And when you come and receive him in

  68. that way, it tells me you can be born

  69. again into God's family. So um we refer

  70. to that prayer that's given in Matthew

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  71. chapter 6 as the Lord's prayer but in a

  72. sense we maybe ought to call it the

  73. disciples prayer

  74. because it was when the disciples came

  75. and they said to Jesus Lord teach us to

  76. pray even as John also taught his

  77. disciples to pray and so he taught them

  78. to pray our pray after this manner not

  79. necess necessarily these exact words,

  80. but pray after this manner. Our Father,

  81. which art in heaven, hallowed be be thy

  82. name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done

  83. on earth as it is in heaven. Give us

  84. this day our daily bread, and forgive us

  85. our debts or trespasses as we forgive

  86. those who trespass against us. I know

  87. that Pastor Hixon has told you this and

  88. most of you know this, but the fact is

  89. you can't really call that the Lord's

  90. Prayer because Jesus would have never

  91. prayed that prayer personally for

  92. himself.

  93. How would he ever pray forgive us our

  94. debts as we forgive our debtors? He

  95. never sinned. So he would have never

  96. prayed that prayer for himself.

  97. He prayed that prayer as a a a model

  98. prayer for his followers. If you want to

  99. talk about the Lord's prayer, the prayer

  100. that he actually prayed,

  101. then you have to come here to what we

  102. call his high priestly prayer in John

  103. 17. You know, this amazes me. Um he

  104. gathered with his uh disciples. If

  105. you're in the Gospel of John, beginning

  106. in chapter 13, we have what we call the

  107. upper room discourse. And uh chapters 13

  108. and 14 is what he talked with his

  109. disciples about during that last supper.

  110. And then he says at the end of chapter

  111. 14:31, arise, let us go from here. And

  112. uh in chapters 15 and 16, he's teaching

  113. them on their journey as they're walking

  114. um he's teaching them

  115. about uh the true vine. I I've often

  116. wondered he went from over in Jerusalem

  117. today. I I if my memory serves me

  118. correctly, the Jaffa gate, the the gate

  119. that goes out on the road that goes over

  120. to the uh west toward the Mediterranean

  121. in the city of Jaffa, the Jaffa gate is

  122. close, I believe, to where the upper

  123. room was. And so they would have gone

  124. from that uh location of Jerusalem out

  125. through the winding streets across

  126. through the temple area down through

  127. what they call the Tyropian Valley up

  128. into the u temple mount courtyard and

  129. they had a gate there doors on it which

  130. had which had uh the depiction in gold I

  131. believe gold or brass of of the vine and

  132. the vine was to be a symbol

  133. of the nation of Israel, the the vine of

  134. Jehovah. And I think that maybe Jesus

  135. stopped by that uh door while he was on

  136. his way to Gethsemane

  137. and uh he talked about I am the true

  138. vine. Chapter 15 and verse one. And then

  139. he talked about the struggles they would

  140. have in the world. Marvel not if the

  141. world hates you and hated me before it

  142. hated you. And all those things he talks

  143. about. He talks about the coming of the

  144. Holy Spirit. All of that discussion was

  145. on this walk from the upper room across

  146. the temple probably out through the

  147. eastern or the golden or the beautiful

  148. gate. One gate with three different

  149. names, eastern, golden or beautiful.

  150. Probably went out through that gate down

  151. through the Kiddan Valley and over to

  152. the garden of Gethsemane where he

  153. prayed. And I I think it's kind of

  154. strange. He prayed

  155. this prayer, John 17, on his way to

  156. Gethsemane to pray. He prayed on his way

  157. to pray. That's kind of an interesting

  158. observation. I think uh I wonder how

  159. much we pray. He prayed all the time.

  160. You know, I don't know how long I'll

  161. speak this morning. Aren't you thankful

  162. that the scripture doesn't say preach

  163. without ceasing?

  164. But it does say pray without ceasing.

  165. And it's just uh interesting to me that

  166. Jesus prayed so much he prayed on his

  167. way to pray. I wonder how much we pray.

  168. But at any rate, this is really his

  169. prayer. It's the high priestly prayer.

  170. Aren't you glad that we have a great

  171. high priest who can be touched with the

  172. feeling of our infirmity and he knows

  173. what our struggles are because he's gone

  174. through them himself. And so he comes

  175. here to this prayer. Uh many have said

  176. this is holy ground. This is like

  177. entering into the Holy of Holies and

  178. listening to what Jesus, our great high

  179. priest, uh uh request

  180. on these hours before

  181. he went to the cross. You have to

  182. understand he goes to Gethsemane after

  183. this prayer. He sees he's taken to the

  184. house of Caiaphas. He's imprisoned. He's

  185. beaten. The next morning early they take

  186. him to the ptorium. He's he's beaten.

  187. He's mocked. A crown of thorns is put on

  188. him. He's taken out. He's put upon a

  189. cross, nailed to a cross. He's hanging

  190. there for 6 hours. Darkness from high

  191. noon till 3:00 in the afternoon. Then he

  192. cries out and he says, "It is finished."

  193. uh within 24 hours basically of when

  194. he's praying here less than that he's

  195. dead

  196. then praise the Lord he doesn't stay

  197. dead he rises again but this is a prayer

  198. that he prayed in the closing hours

  199. before he goes to the cross and I just

  200. think

  201. what would you or I pray for in a moment

  202. like this but here's what Jesus prayed

  203. for I'm hoping that we've got this right

  204. here. Here's what our Lord prayed for

  205. there. There's many requests that you

  206. could focus on, single out in this 17th

  207. chapter of John, but I think there are

  208. four that stand out to my way of

  209. thinking and we can look at them

  210. together here this morning. But let me

  211. read uh this is about 640 words, takes

  212. about three and a half minutes to read.

  213. You stay with me while I read the 17th

  214. chapter of John in its entirety.

  215. Beginning in verse one.

  216. These words spoke Jesus and lifted up

  217. his eyes to heaven and said, "Father,

  218. the hour is come. Glorify thy son that

  219. thy son may also glorify thee, as thou

  220. hast given him power over all flesh,

  221. that he should give eternal life to as

  222. many as thou hast given him." And this

  223. is life eternal, that they may know

  224. thee, the only true God, and Jesus

  225. Christ, whom thou hast sent. I have

  226. glorified thee on the earth. I have

  227. finished the work which thou gavest me

  228. to do. And now, oh father, glorify thou

  229. me with thine own self, with the glory

  230. which I had with thee before the world

  231. was. I have manifested thy name unto the

  232. men whom thou hast given me out of the

  233. world. Thine they were, and thou gavest

  234. them to me, and they have kept thy word.

  235. Now they have known that all things

  236. whatsoever thou hast given me are of

  237. thee. For I have given unto them the

  238. words which thou gavest me, and they

  239. have received them, and have known

  240. surely that I came out from thee, and

  241. they have believed that thou did send

  242. me. I pray for them. I pray not for the

  243. world, but for them whom thou hast given

  244. me, for they are thine, and all mine are

  245. thine, and thine are mine, and I am

  246. glorified in them.

  247. And now I am no more in the world, but

  248. these are in the world. And I come to

  249. thee, Holy Father, keep through thine

  250. own name those whom thou hast given me,

  251. that they may be one as we are. While I

  252. was with them in the world, I kept them

  253. in thy name. Those whom thou hast given

  254. me, I have kept, and none of them is

  255. lost, but the son of predition, that the

  256. scripture might be fulfilled.

  257. And now come I to thee, and these things

  258. I speak in the world, that they might

  259. have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

  260. I have given them my word, and the world

  261. hath hated them, because they are not of

  262. the world, even as I am not of the

  263. world. I pray not that thou shouldest

  264. take them out of the world, but that

  265. thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

  266. They are not of the world, even as I am

  267. not of the world. Sanctify them through

  268. thy truth. Thy word is truth. As thou

  269. hast sent me into the world, even so

  270. have I also sent them into the world.

  271. And for their sake I sanctify myself,

  272. that they also might be sanctified

  273. through the truth. Neither pray I for

  274. these alone, but for them also who shall

  275. believe on me through their word, that

  276. they all may be one as thou, Father, art

  277. in me, and I in thee, that they also may

  278. be one in us, that the world may believe

  279. that thou hast sent me. And the glory

  280. which thou gavest me, I have given them,

  281. that they may be one, even as we are

  282. one.

  283. I in them and thou in me, that they may

  284. be made perfect in one, and that the

  285. world may know that thou hast sent me,

  286. and hast loved them as thou hast loved

  287. me. Father, I will that they also whom

  288. thou hast given me, be with me where I

  289. am, that they may behold my glory, which

  290. thou hast given me. For thou lovest me

  291. before the foundation of the world, oh

  292. righteous father, the world hath not

  293. known thee, but I have known thee, and

  294. these have known that thou hast sent me.

  295. And I have declared unto them thy name,

  296. and will declare it, that the love with

  297. which thou hast loved me may be in them,

  298. and I in them.

  299. What an astonishingly

  300. wonderful prayer our savior prayed in

  301. those moments. And as I said, there are

  302. many things that we could focus on, but

  303. I want to focus on four here this

  304. morning that stand out, at least in my

  305. mind, in what I have just read. The

  306. first one of these uh requests that he

  307. makes is he prays that God would be

  308. glorified.

  309. He prayed that God would be glorified.

  310. You know the Westminster Shorter

  311. Catechism says that the chief duty of

  312. man is to glorify God and to enjoy him

  313. forever. That's our highest duty, I

  314. think, to glorify him. Um, that's what

  315. the church's um primary objective is, is

  316. to glorify God. Now, I want you to see

  317. how this prayer starts out. In verse

  318. one,

  319. these words spoke Jesus and lifted up

  320. his eyes to heaven and said, "Father,

  321. the hour is come."

  322. What hour is he talking about? The hour

  323. for which he came into this world. You

  324. know, back in John chapter 2 and verse

    John 2 chapter mention

  325. 4, Jesus is at the marriage at Canaa of

  326. Galilee and his mother Mary says, you

  327. know, they're uh running out of wine and

  328. Jesus, you remember, he says, "My hour

  329. is not yet come."

  330. He came into this world for a specific

  331. time, a specific hour, and uh Canaan of

  332. Galilee wasn't the time. And then you

  333. could read it. I'm not going to take you

  334. to all these, but chapter 12 and verse

  335. 27, he says uh uh the hour was coming.

  336. And then in 13 and verse one, he talks

  337. about uh the hour was coming. But now he

  338. says the hour is come. Chapter 13 and

  339. verse one. Now, before the feast of

  340. Passover, when Jesus knew that the hour

  341. was come, uh, that he should depart out

  342. of this world. That's what he's talking

  343. about. This hour has come when he should

  344. depart out of this world. And here's

  345. what he wants to have happen in that

  346. hour. Father, the hour has come. Glorify

  347. thy son that thy son may also glorify

  348. thee. How is God the Father going to be

  349. glorified in this prophesied hour that

  350. is upon our Lord and Savior Jesus

  351. Christ? He says, "Glorify thy son

  352. Jesus

  353. that thy son may also glorify thee." And

  354. how is that going to happen? It happens

  355. in a lot of ways. God glorifies himself

  356. in many ways. You know, it says in

  357. Psalm 19 and verse one, the heavens

  358. declare the glory of God and the

  359. firmament showeth forth his handiwork.

  360. Well, God is glorified in creation, is

  361. he not?

  362. I I think about all these pictures I

  363. love to browse through on the internet

  364. of uh the web space telescope and the

  365. Hubble Space Telescope and they show all

  366. of these

  367. regions and galaxies in our universe and

  368. you're just your mind is just blown away

  369. at the immensity

  370. the grandeur of what God has created and

  371. I think the heavens declare the glory of

  372. God. And I look at those pictures and I

  373. say, "Uh, nobody like him. Only God

  374. could have done this, right?" And I I

  375. see God's glory. He's glorified in his

  376. word. Sometimes I'll be reading along in

  377. the word and uh I'll just come across a

  378. a line and I think, "Oh, glory to God."

  379. Just think about this amazing

  380. declaration. We God is glorified in a

  381. lot of ways, but I want to say I I'm

  382. persuaded that God was never glorified

  383. in any greater way than through his son.

  384. And I don't think I'm off in saying

  385. this, that perhaps through his son, he

  386. was glorified

  387. more in this hour

  388. than in any other time before we get to

  389. eternity.

  390. You know, I I can think about the glory

  391. that's here, but I wonder about the

  392. glory that's going to be revealed one of

  393. these days.

  394. I think about what Jesus uh says in

  395. verse 24 of this chapter chapter. Father

  396. I will that they also whom they hast

  397. given me

  398. be with me where I am that they may

  399. behold

  400. my glory

  401. which thou hast given me for thou lovest

  402. me before the foundation of the world.

  403. Jesus says that twice by the way. The

  404. end of verse 24 be that he had a

  405. relationship with the father before the

  406. foundation of the world. The end of

  407. verse five the glory which I had with

  408. thee before the world was.

  409. People want to say well Jesus was just a

  410. man. He was just a great teacher. I say

  411. now wait a minute folks. It tells me

  412. here in his word, he confessed it

  413. himself that he was around with the

  414. father in heaven before the world was

  415. created.

  416. Before there were galaxies or universes

  417. or angels or principalities or powers or

  418. humans or anything

  419. in eternity past, he had glory with the

  420. father before the world was.

  421. And when he came into this life, he laid

  422. aside

  423. that glory

  424. to take upon him human flesh

  425. to become a man.

  426. And I often think about this. He didn't

  427. just take on the appearance of man. He

  428. became a man

  429. so that he could be our kinsman redeemer

  430. to die in our place. And he walked all

  431. the dusty roads of Galilee and Jerusalem

  432. and all of that. And people saw him, but

  433. they didn't really see his glory.

  434. They didn't really see who he was. You

  435. say, "Well, Peter, James, and John up on

  436. the Mount of Transfiguration,

  437. they saw his glory there." Well, they

  438. saw some of his glory, but I'm persuaded

  439. that the glory that was his in eternity

  440. past and the glory which he will be uh

  441. given again as he went back to heaven.

  442. and that we will one day witness with

  443. our own eyes as believers the glory uh

  444. that thou hast given me before the

  445. foundation of the world. That glory one

  446. day we're going to see it. Amen.

  447. But

  448. during this hour,

  449. he's wanting to glorify the father. And

  450. how does he do that?

  451. I' I've never seen God. Have you? No man

  452. has seen God at any time. And in fact,

  453. in this Gospel of John, chapter one, I

  454. like the way this says it in chapter 1,

  455. it says verse 18, "No man hath seen God

  456. at any time. The only begotten son who

  457. is in the bosom of the father, he hath

  458. declared him."

  459. Um, I I like the way it says that in the

  460. Greek text. It says, "No man has seen

  461. God in any time. The only begotten uh

  462. son uh the only begotten God who is in

  463. the bosom of the father, he hath

  464. declared him." It declares Jesus is God

  465. right there.

  466. We we've not seen God, but we've seen

  467. God's glory manifest through Jesus

  468. Christ. Philip saith unto him, John 14:9

    John 14:9

  469. 8, Philip saith unto him,"Lord, show us

  470. the father, and it sufficeth us." And

  471. Jesus said unto him, "Have I been such a

  472. long time with you, and yet thou hast

  473. not known me, Philillip? He that hath

  474. seen me hath seen the father."

  475. Uh, in Jesus Christ, we see God

  476. perfectly represented

  477. uh exactly as he is. Hebrews chapter 1

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  478. talks about um

  479. that Jesus being the brightness of his

  480. glory, the brightness of God's glory and

  481. the express image of his person. You

  482. want to see God the father, you look at

  483. Jesus Christ and Jesus says during this

  484. hour

  485. I want to be glorified

  486. so that I can glorify the father.

  487. reflect his glory. Now I want you to

  488. think about God manifests his glory in a

  489. lot of ways

  490. but I think when Jesus went to the cross

  491. he manifest

  492. the glory of God's holiness

  493. the glory of God's righteousness

  494. the glory of God's grace

  495. the glory of God's mercy

  496. the glory of God's love

  497. in greater ways than it has ever been

  498. displayed

  499. in all of human history.

  500. When has God's love been more powerfully

  501. showcased

  502. in this world than it was at the cross?

  503. You know, we just quote that verse so

  504. simply. For God so loved the world that

  505. he gave his only begotten son that he

  506. whosoever believeth on him would not

  507. perish. But we we've known that and

  508. we've quoted that and we have it so

  509. ingrained that it's almost automatic. We

  510. don't even think about it much. But

  511. here's what it says. where God

  512. so

  513. loved

  514. the magnitude of that love that was

  515. displayed at the cross.

  516. And

  517. I think that when Jesus prays in here

  518. that God would be glorified.

  519. He said one time, "Not my will but thine

  520. be done."

  521. and he went to that cross

  522. and he showcased

  523. the love of God

  524. in deeper and more profound and powerful

  525. ways than I can ever

  526. hope to

  527. convey through my feeble words here this

  528. morning. I think what it says in Romans

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  529. chapter 5,

  530. for when we were yet without strength,

  531. in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

  532. For scarcely for a righteous man will

  533. one die, yet perhaps for a good man some

  534. would even dare to die. But God

  535. commendeth

  536. put on public display, that's what that

  537. word commendeth mean. God commendeth his

  538. love toward us in that while we were yet

  539. sinners

  540. Christ died for us. He died for us.

  541. No words to express that I don't think

  542. he he wants to bring glory to his father

  543. through the sufferings that he would

  544. undergo there at Calvary.

  545. I don't want to go too long this

  546. morning. The second one is he prayed

  547. also in this prayer

  548. that his own would be sanctified.

  549. See what it says there in verses 14 and

  550. following.

  551. I have given them thy word and the world

  552. hath hated them because they are not of

  553. the world even as I am not of the world.

  554. I pray not that thou should have take

  555. them out of the world but that thou

  556. shouldest keep them from the evil. They

  557. are not of the world, even as I am not

  558. of the world. Sanctify them through thy

  559. truth. Thy word is truth. As thou hast

  560. sent me into the world, even so have I

  561. sent them into the world. And he talks

  562. about here in verse 19, "And for this

  563. their sake I sanctify

  564. myself

  565. that they also might be sanctified

  566. through the truth."

  567. What does this word sanctified mean?

  568. Uh sanctified means

  569. to make holy.

  570. Um

  571. holiness uh and sanctification are

  572. linked together.

  573. And it does not mean that you take

  574. something that is defiled and sinful

  575. and you bring it into a state of

  576. holiness where all the defilement and

  577. sin is removed.

  578. Some people kind of have that idea about

  579. sanctification.

  580. Uh but I have a problem with that

  581. because of what Jesus says here in um

  582. verse 19.

  583. and for this sake I sanctify myself.

  584. Now wait a minute. If to be sanctified

  585. means to take something defiled or

  586. sinful or corrupt and bring it into a

  587. state of holiness

  588. then this verse makes no sense because

  589. Jesus had no sin. He was holy, harmless,

  590. undefiled,

  591. separate from sinners. Uh the whole idea

  592. of holiness

  593. is is really to take something and set

  594. it apart for God's purposes.

  595. Whether purpose of sacrifice

  596. or a purpose of service to take

  597. something

  598. and set it apart for God.

  599. And in a sense, what Jesus is saying

  600. here is

  601. I am taking my life, my body, my blood,

  602. and I'm setting a apart for God the

  603. Father's service in sacrifice

  604. when I go to the cross.

  605. And in other words, he's saying just

  606. like I am set apart for God's work,

  607. he wants us to be set apart for God's

  608. work.

  609. He's He's wanting these people,

  610. his followers. Now, I want you to think

  611. about it. Who are the ones spoken of

  612. here? The men that thou hast given me

  613. out of the world? The men who I've given

  614. thy word to. I've kept them. He

  615. says,"None of them is lost except the

  616. son of predition down there in in verse

  617. uh 12." Of course, that was Judas. Judas

  618. was never saved, but uh these

  619. men

  620. were nothing special. Uh this is

  621. completely off the course. I like to

  622. throw in a little humor once in a while.

  623. Forgive me. But uh the I'll show you

  624. what I'm getting to on this point in

  625. just a minute.

  626. A first grade teacher

  627. took her class and she was wanting to

  628. know how well acquainted they were with

  629. uh familiar phrases that are a part of

  630. our culture. Uh so she gave them up on

  631. the blackboard a bunch of uh familiar

  632. phrases. the first part and they were

  633. supposed to call out if they knew the uh

  634. completion of the phrase. And so she put

  635. him up there and you'll probably know

  636. some of these two. First one was it's

  637. always darkest before

  638. the dawn. Yeah, the daylight. But the

  639. one little boy says it's always darkest

  640. before daylight savings time.

  641. Don't bite the hand

  642. that looks dirty. That's what one little

  643. boy said.

  644. You can't teach an old dog new

  645. math.

  646. New math. That's what the one little boy

  647. said.

  648. Um,

  649. laugh and the world laughs with you. cry

  650. and you cry alone. But one child said,

  651. "Cry and you have to blow your nose."

  652. And I could go on with these, but here's

  653. the one I was getting to. The one phrase

  654. was, "A penny saved

  655. is a penny earned."

  656. But the one little kid said, "A penny

  657. saved is not much."

  658. And I bring that up because when I talk

  659. about these men whom thou hast given me

  660. that he's talking about in this chapter,

  661. who were they? They were kind of like

  662. the penny uh penny saved is not much.

  663. These men were not much. In fact, it

  664. says in uh Acts chapter 4 when the

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  665. disciples appeared before the council,

  666. it says they took note of them that they

  667. were unlearned and ignorant men,

  668. but they had been with Jesus. Unlearned

  669. and ignorant men.

  670. Um these, you know, I tried to dress up

  671. today to come to speak at Athens Bible

  672. Church. I I try to look presentable, but

  673. I'll bet you that if you saw any of

  674. these disciples, none of them had these

  675. fancy dudes, duds, I'm sorry, fancy

  676. duds. They were fishermen.

  677. They wore common clothes. They were just

  678. ordinary men, right? And they had no

  679. education to speak of. Um, they were

  680. kind of nobodyies until Jesus called

  681. them to himself.

  682. But these

  683. common people,

  684. Jesus says, "I pray that they would that

  685. thou would sanctify them.

  686. Set these nobodies,

  687. set them apart,

  688. God's service,

  689. even to sacrifice for God." All of them

  690. except the Apostle John, I think, died

  691. violent deaths. Their lives were set

  692. apart for sacrifice as well as service.

  693. Now

  694. you say, "Well, that was the apostles.

  695. Those were the disciples." But you know,

  696. it tells me in 1 Thessalonians chapter

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  697. 4, this is the will of God, even your

  698. sanctification.

  699. You and I

  700. are to be sat set apart

  701. for God's service, are we not?

  702. even sacrifice for him. There's been an

  703. awful lot of believers who have laid

  704. down their lives. Voice of the Martyrs,

  705. if you ever are acquainted with that

  706. organization and find out all the people

  707. that have died for their faith in

  708. Christ, it happens daily around the

  709. world.

  710. And uh I think that we need to be

  711. reminded that he wants us to be set

  712. apart, sanctified

  713. for his service. I don't know what your

  714. task is, uh what my task is day by day.

  715. We have to kind of allow the Holy Spirit

  716. to guide us and lead us. Correct? But

  717. every one of us has something we're

  718. supposed to do. He says uh in verse 16,

  719. uh I'll start in verse 15. I pray not

  720. that thou should us take them out of the

  721. world.

  722. The Lord doesn't want us he

  723. wants us to not be the friends of the

  724. world, but he doesn't want us to be

  725. removed from the world just yet. He

  726. wants us to have an influence. He wants

  727. us to be salt and light. He wants us to

  728. make a difference. He wants us to be his

  729. ambassadors, his messengers.

  730. Um he doesn't want to have us taken out

  731. of the world. You know, there was a big

  732. movement back in the kind of middle ages

  733. uh the monastic order or people who

  734. became hermits.

  735. They

  736. remove themselves from society. They go

  737. out and hide out in a cave and

  738. supposedly spend all their time praying

  739. and communing with God. And they thought

  740. somehow they were making themselves holy

  741. and uh or separating into a monastic

  742. order where they wouldn't speak or they

  743. wouldn't uh communicate with anybody

  744. else. They would just live in isolation.

  745. That's not what God wants.

  746. He doesn't want a Christian subculture

  747. that never interacts with other people.

  748. He wants us to be in the world but not

  749. of the world. And he wants us to be

  750. light and he wants us to be salt to make

  751. a difference. And so he says, "I pray

  752. not that thou should us take them out of

  753. the world," verse 15, "but thou should

  754. keep keep them from the evil or the evil

  755. one, literally Satan. Um, sanctify them

  756. through thy truth. Thy word is truth.

  757. How am I going to be set apart to God?

  758. How is my life going to be purified and

  759. uh made cleansed? Wherew with thou shall

  760. a young man cleanse his way? By taking

  761. heed unto the word of God. Sanctify them

  762. through thy truth. Thy word is truth.

  763. And so one of the things he prayed for

  764. is that God would get glory even through

  765. our lives.

  766. And he prayed that our lives would be

  767. set apart

  768. for service to God in his will. There's

  769. a third thing I'm trying to move along.

  770. He prayed that we would be unified.

  771. Now, I'll tell you, there's u a lot of

  772. liberal theologians and uh you know,

  773. church leaders that would really pounce

  774. on this thought. Yes, he wants us to lay

  775. aside all of our differences and all of

  776. our theological disputes and he wants us

  777. to just love one another. He wants us to

  778. just be unified.

  779. Well, I don't think that's exactly what

  780. he meant. I I think it's kind of

  781. interesting. There was an old uh

  782. um

  783. preacher by the name of Awtoer.

  784. Um he said um the only way to be uh

  785. unified, you have to think about

  786. 100 pianos.

  787. And none of those

  788. pianos would necessarily be in tune with

  789. one another unless you had the piano

  790. tuner come in and tune all 100 of them

  791. using one tuning fork.

  792. And when he got done tuning all 100 of

  793. them to that one tuna, then they would

  794. all be unified, right? Because they were

  795. all um brought into alignment with one

  796. thing.

  797. And I think about the fact that in this

  798. world um the only thing that can

  799. ultimately unite us truly is the word of

  800. God. And we get confused about that,

  801. don't we? But the person of God, the

  802. Lord Jesus Christ, he is the focal point

  803. that brings about unity. This whole

  804. ecumenical movement idea, CS Lewis one

  805. time said, "No clever arrangement of

  806. rotten eggs will ever make a good

  807. omelette."

  808. You can take all the rotten eggs and all

  809. the church circles you want to and put

  810. them together any way you want to. It's

  811. still not going to make a good omelette.

  812. Now, I have something here that I don't

  813. know if any of you ever heard of Dr.

  814. John Phillips.

  815. Dr. John Phillips has written over a

  816. hundred books and I would recommend

  817. every one of them. They're wonderful. Uh

  818. he was a friend of mine. and he's now

  819. with the Lord. But John, Dr. John

  820. Phillips and his wife Betty came and

  821. stayed in our home one time. He spoke at

  822. the church. Uh he wasn't driving. Then I

  823. drove down to Winston Salem, North

  824. Carolina, and picked him up and brought

  825. him for that weekend. And then when when

  826. he was done, I took him back and I went

  827. to took them out to eat down in Winston

  828. Salem. Then I went and spent the

  829. afternoon at their house. And Dr. I've

  830. got a picture of him. John Phillips, a

  831. wonderful man of God. I asked him one

  832. time, "How do you write all those

  833. books?" And he said, "I've spoken all

  834. over the world. I've spoken at Bible

  835. conferences and revival and u services

  836. all around the world. And every place I

  837. go, they put me up in a hotel. And when

  838. I get done in the evening and I'm

  839. sitting back in that hotel room all by

  840. myself, I get alone with God and I write

  841. what he puts on my heart." And those

  842. books, over a hundred of them, are the

  843. product of those lonely nights in hotel

  844. rooms. And I I really respected him for

  845. that. So many of us would just sit and

  846. watch TV and then go to bed. Um what a

  847. disciplined man. Here's what he wrote in

  848. his commentary on John 17.

  849. Unsaved people look at the church and

  850. see Baptists and Brethren and Methodists

  851. and Mormons and Presbyterians and

  852. Pentecostals and Catholics and

  853. congregationalists and they are both

  854. skeptical and confused. Many of the

  855. churches started in times of revival uh

  856. and but with the years they became dead

  857. churches. Some uh were a protest against

  858. liberalism or legalism or false doctrine

  859. and they had forceful leaders and once

  860. those uh figures passed off the scene

  861. the churches declined. Um they spo

  862. spalled sprawled over vital truth. Some

  863. of them did they divided over particular

  864. issues baptist eternal security and

  865. baptism and eternal security. uh second

  866. coming of Christ, uh spiritual gifts,

  867. the sovereignty of God, you could go on

  868. and on and on. How then can we be one?

  869. What agreement can there be between the

  870. amillennialist and the

  871. dispensationalist?

  872. Between the Armenian and the Calvinist,

  873. between the fundamentalist and the

  874. liberal, between those who hold infant

  875. baptism and those who hold to the

  876. baptism of believers. The answer of the

  877. liberal is compromise. An ecumenical

  878. church. But that's not what Christ had

  879. in mind. Um, when we get down to it, we

  880. have to understand he knew Jesus knew

  881. that these divisions and many of them

  882. were necessary divisions would be

  883. developing over the centuries uh and

  884. would produce what for one of a better

  885. word can be called christendom. In what

  886. way then can we understand the Lord's

  887. prayer for unity? In the first place he

  888. says he prayed for a mystical oneness

  889. and that prayer has been answered in the

  890. full. The mystical church of Christ is

  891. one. Now what he means by the mystical

  892. church is the invisible church. You have

  893. the church of God which is the true

  894. church which is the invisible church.

  895. Only God sees that church. And then you

  896. have the local church. Right?

  897. I I used to talk to people when they

  898. were coming into membership of at our

  899. church and I'd say, "Is it possible for

  900. a person to be a member of the church

  901. but not a member of a church?"

  902. You get what I'm saying there?

  903. Is it possible to be a member of the

  904. church and not be a member of a church?

  905. Yeah. The minute you believe on Jesus

  906. Christ by faith, you are by the spirit

  907. of God baptized into one body, right?

  908. And you are a part of the church,

  909. but you may not at that point be a

  910. member of a church, a local church. And

  911. so he's talking about the mystical

  912. church. It's the unique work of the Holy

  913. Spirit on the day of Pentecost. And

  914. throughout this present age, he is

  915. baptizing individual believers into the

  916. mystical body of Christ. Um there is no

  917. schism in the magical uh mystical body.

  918. He is the head. Christ is the head. We

  919. are the members. Each member is washed

  920. in the blood, energized by the Holy

  921. Spirit, united to Christ, perfect and

  922. complete in him. This is the church in

  923. its universal aspect which is spoken of

  924. in Ephesians. A glorious church without

  925. spot or wrinkle or any such thing.

  926. Untarnished, untouched by this uh the

  927. time or the spread out through all time

  928. and space, rooted in eternity and the

  929. bride of Christ. That's the mystical

  930. church. The second place is the Lord

  931. prayed for the manifest oneness. Not

  932. mystical oneness, manifest oneness. This

  933. is not the universal church which no one

  934. has yet seen. It reserves to the local

  935. church be it a Baptist church or a

  936. Presbyterian church whatever church uh

  937. as long as they are truly believing any

  938. local church of belie uh believers who

  939. love the Lord Jesus and are saved by his

  940. grace and are seeking to walk in the

  941. light of God's word who are drawn

  942. together for worship and fellowship the

  943. Christian ser the Christian service

  944. holding fast to the truth as it is in

  945. Christ here the Lord is praying for

  946. unity and peace within the local

  947. congregation.

  948. So now you and I have nothing to do with

  949. the oneness of the universal church.

  950. That's all in God's hand.

  951. But we do have some influence over the

  952. oneness, the unity within the local

  953. church, do we not?

  954. And Christ prayed for that, that there

  955. would be unity and oneness within his

  956. body. Oh, how I pray. If he prayed for

  957. that, don't you think we ought to be

  958. willing to do our best to endeavoring to

  959. keep the unity of the spirit and the

  960. bond of peace?

  961. Don't you think we ought to be striving

  962. to that end? You got some bitterness or

  963. some grudge or some harbored anger

  964. against some other brother or sister in

  965. the congregation. I'm telling you, get

  966. rid of it.

  967. Go get alone with that person. Confess

  968. your faults one to another. Settle it so

  969. that you can have unity in this body.

  970. You know Jesus said in John 13, I think,

  971. "By this shall all men know that ye are

  972. my disciples if you have love one to

  973. another."

  974. If you'll get the

  975. problems out of the way, pray about it.

  976. Ask God to show you how to reconcile.

  977. Humble yourself. Go and talk to that

  978. person. make things straight as God

  979. enables you to do so

  980. to restore unity and the bond of peace

  981. within the local congregation. It will

  982. help the witness of this congregation in

  983. this community.

  984. And God wants us to do that. I'm talking

  985. too long. Here's the last one. He wants

  986. us to be unified. He wants us to be uh

  987. the world to be evangelized.

  988. I think about the fact that in this

  989. uh chapter verse 18,

  990. as thou hast sent me into the world, why

  991. did Jesus come into the world? He came

  992. to seek and to save that which was lost.

  993. Right? That's what he said.

  994. Even as thou hast sent me into the

  995. world, Jesus says to the father, even so

  996. have I also sent them into the world.

  997. He went back to heaven, but he left us

  998. here to carry on his work.

  999. We're supposed to be going into the

1000. world. And I think about in verse 20, it

1001. says, "Neither pray I for these alone,

1002. his disciples that was there on that

1003. night when he prayed, but for them also

1004. who shall believe on me through their

  1005. word."

1006. He prayed for us. He prayed for you. He

1007. prayed for me. because we have believed

1008. on him through their word, right? He

1009. prayed for us and he wants us to be

1010. going and reaching others with that same

1011. word. I think about in verse 21 that

1012. they all may be one as thou Father art

1013. in me and I in thee that they also may

1014. be one in us that the world may believe

1015. that thou hast sent me. The Lord wants

1016. us to be involved in reaching out with

  1017. the gospel. you know,

1018. we kind of isolate ourselves. We run in

1019. Christian circles. We we uh don't

1020. interact in the world. He wants us to be

1021. in the world, but not of the world. He

1022. doesn't want us to compromise with the

1023. sin of the world, but he wants us to be

1024. in the world as a witness. You know,

1025. instead of Jesus, he was holy, harmless,

  1026. undefiled, separate from sinners.

1027. He didn't compromise in any way as he

1028. walked the roads of this earth.

1029. But I tell you what, he was said to be

1030. the friend of publicans and sinners.

1031. He was willing to go where the need was.

1032. I read this story and I thought it was

  1033. kind of interesting.

  1034. This preacher said,

  1035. "Um,

1036. one day a number of years ago, I called

1037. home late one afternoon to see how

1038. things were going around the house with

1039. my wife. My wife talked. She said, "Oh,

1040. by the way, we received a call from the

1041. youth soccer association here in town.

1042. They were wondering if you might be a

1043. coach." I said, "Well, you told them no,

  1044. didn't you?" She said, "I just didn't

1045. have the heart to say no. Uh, you'll

1046. have to tell them yourself. I assured

1047. you uh you'd get back to her." By the

1048. time I got home, I had all my reasons

  1049. laid out. I h didn't have the time. I

1050. didn't know anything about soccer. I did

1051. not want to do it. I finally gripped the

1052. phone and dialed. And as I talked to the

1053. poor woman at the other end of the line,

1054. I learned there would be no team if I

  1055. didn't coach. I remember my family

1056. chuckling in the background as they

1057. heard me say, "Well, yes, I can do it."

1058. The only good thing was that I would get

1059. to coach one of my own sons. Next thing

1060. I know, I was up late reading soccer

1061. books trying to understand what a center

1062. halfback was, an outside rule, etc.

  1063. Suddenly I had a coach's whistle and I

1064. was occupied three days a week from 4 to

1065. 6 and half half a day on Saturdays. The

1066. season did not go very well at the

  1067. beginning. I have probably heard you've

1068. probably heard the saying if the bugle

1069. gives an uncertain sound who will

1070. follow. That describes my coaching. I'm

1071. afraid fortunately I had some good

1072. players and the team came together as

1073. the season went on. In fact, in one of

1074. the last games of the season, we beat

1075. the number one team in the last second

1076. of the game and thus made the playoffs.

1077. On the night before the playoffs, I

1078. invited the team to my church for a

1079. potluck dinner with their parents. Even

1080. both sides of divorced parents came

1081. toward the end of the evening. I said to

1082. them, "If it's all right with you guys,

1083. I'd like to share something from the

1084. word of God." The parents agreed. Nobody

1085. objected. And I told the boys the story

1086. of David and Goliath with practical

1087. applications. The next day we went into

1088. the playoffs. Um we lost in the final

1089. minutes one to zero. But that is not

1090. where the story ends. Saturday Sunday

1091. morning when I stepped into the pulpit.

1092. I looked out on the congregation and

1093. there were all my players wearing their

1094. orange jerseys and their parents too.

1095. Jews and Muslims and Mormons and several

1096. others with varying backgrounds. That

1097. began a ministry of several of those

1098. famil family's lives. I did not want to

1099. coach. I did not have time to do it. But

1100. because I just did it, uh I didn't know

1101. how to say no and it ended up coaching.

1102. And that turned out to be one of the

1103. greatest experiences of my life. Uh, God

  1104. wants us to evangelize

1105. the world. And I'm afraid I'm not

1106. preaching at you. I'm preaching to us

  1107. because I haven't done a very good job

  1108. of it myself.

1109. But are there people out there that need

  1110. to hear the gospel?

1111. Absolutely. And where are they going to

1112. hear it from? On CNN? I don't think so.

1113. I think they need need to hear it from

1114. the ones who know him and trust him and

1115. have been born into God's family. It's

1116. been good to be with you here today to

1117. talk about the prayer of our Lord and to

1118. reflect upon the fact that he wants God

1119. to be glorified as revealed in his

1120. prayer. He wants his people to be

  1121. sanctified.

1122. He wants believers as much as is

  1123. possible

  1124. to be unified.

1125. And he wants the lost of this world

1126. by the enabling power of the Holy Spirit

1127. dwelling in his children to be

  1128. evangelized.

1129. Oh, how hope I hope and pray that God

1130. would use this in the hearts of the

1131. folks here at Athens Bible to somehow

1132. stir us to having a greater impact in

1133. this world for the glory of our Lord. We

1134. pray. Father, we thank you for the

1135. opportunity to share this morning. I

1136. feel like I've stumbled through this

1137. message and uh failed to make the points

1138. the way I should. But I pray that

1139. somehow in spite of um my evil efforts

1140. that you would use this message to

1141. accomplish great things in the hearts of

1142. your people both here and perhaps even

1143. those who would be listening online.

1144. Have your will and way in all of our

1145. lives for the good, for the salvation of

1146. the lost all around us, for the

  1147. edification of believers,

1148. and father, for the glory of our savior,

1149. the Lord Jesus Christ, and to you our

1150. heavenly father through our lives in

1151. whatever time we have less. Bless this

1152. church. Use us all for your glory. In

1153. Jesus name we pray. Amen.
