  1. Good morning.

  2. Let me say a couple things before we get to the task at hand, which is the Lord's word.

  3. It is a great privilege to be with this church in particular.

  4. You have had a journey since COVID began.

  5. We've all been on our own journey with that.

  6. Each church has had to navigate it, but you've lost your facility and needed to bounce around.

  7. And the flexibility that you have shown and your faithfulness to this body is just demonstrated by the number of people that are in front of me today.

  8. And I count it an unplanned privilege to shut down your time here at this community center and send you back to the location I know that you started.

  9. Let's give our attention, if we could, for the next bit of time to the word of the Lord.

  10. Would you turn in your Bibles, please, to Psalm 119.

  11. I'll be reading the whole thing.

  12. No, I won't. I won't.

  13. It's a very long psalm.

  14. We're going to be looking at just one stanza of this very long psalm, verses 9 through 16.

  15. But before we get there, I want to give you a heads up of what this sermon is looking to accomplish.

  16. Every sermon, after it exposits a text and helps you understand what's being said to the original audience,

  17. every sermon tends to try to then make it applicable to help you understand the claim it makes on your life through application.

  18. And, of course, this sermon will do that.

  19. But it's designed to do even more than that.

  20. By teaching this passage in the way I'm teaching it, the hope is that you'll do more than just learn Psalm 119, verses 9 through 16.

    Psalms 119:9–16

  21. The hope is that you'll learn, to an even greater degree, how to apply the Bible.

  22. How to take any passage and ask it questions so that it has a claim on your life,

  23. so that you understand the difference it's supposed to make in your life.

  24. And so I've titled this sermon, Putting Truth to Work.

  25. And we're going to demonstrate that coming out of Psalm 119.

  26. Now, I want you to picture a kitchen sponge right next to the sink.

  27. Now, maybe you're the kind of people that use the yellow sponge with the green scrubby on the back.

  28. Maybe yours is blue with a darker blue scrubby on the back.

  29. Maybe you don't have a scrubby.

  30. I think those people still exist somewhere.

  31. But whatever comes to mind when you think of your kitchen sponge, just picture it sitting there.

  32. There's no water around it.

  33. By all appearances, the sponge is dry.

  34. And so you go and you pick it up and you squeeze it over your sink and water comes pouring out of the sponge.

  35. Okay, you with me on the picture?

  36. All right.

  37. That sponge laying there next to the sink, we're going to call that professed faith.

  38. It's the faith that you profess.

  39. This will all make sense, trust me, in about 65 seconds.

  40. Professed faith.

  41. It's the faith that we say we believe.

  42. It's what we study.

  43. It's how we would answer a theological exam.

  44. Then you take it and you squeeze it over your sink.

  45. And let's call that water that comes out functional faith.

  46. It's what happens in our life when heat gets applied.

  47. It's what happens when things don't go according to plan.

  48. Functional faith is the faith that we live out of when we ourselves are squeezed.

  49. Professed faith is real.

  50. But we never live out of everything we say we believe.

  51. We only live out of what we truly believe.

  52. That's what our faith functions out of.

  53. That's what we see in our lives when we are squeezed.

  54. And in each of our lives, there's a gap, isn't there?

  55. Between what we know about God and what we live really believing about God.

  56. There's a difference in how we would answer a question on a test and how we respond when we're squeezed.

  57. And that gap is where your besetting sins lie.

  58. That gap is where doubts live.

  59. That gap is where you're vulnerable to attack and temptation.

  60. And the hope this morning is to give you a roadmap on how to close that gap.

  61. How to take what you really in your heart of hearts believe to be true

  62. and help it take one step closer to what you know the Bible says is true.

  63. Okay, the entire message is designed to help close that gap and put truth to work.

  64. And we're going to do that out of Psalm 119.

  65. Let's read that passage together.

  66. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  67. How can a young man keep his way pure?

  68. By guarding it according to your word.

  69. With my whole heart I seek you.

  70. Let me not wander from your commandments.

  71. I have stored up your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

  72. Blessed are you, O Lord.

  73. Teach me your statutes.

  74. With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth.

  75. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.

  76. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.

  77. I will delight in your statutes.

  78. I will not forget your word.

  79. Let's pray.

  80. Father, as we come now to sitting under and applying your word,

  81. Lord, we ask for the help of your spirit to open our ears and our minds,

  82. to overcome even the weaknesses of my preaching,

  83. and that your spirit would take your truth and apply it personally

  84. and specifically in each of our hearts.

  85. Change us because we've sat under your word this morning.

  86. In Jesus' name, amen.

  87. Now if you come to a passage like this, let's say, in your own devotions,

  88. it's easy to turn this into a checklist.

  89. Keep my way pure.

  90. How am I doing?

  91. I'm staying pretty clean.

  92. Check.

  93. Store up God's word.

  94. Work on my Bible memory.

  95. Check.

  96. We apply ourselves to growth, which is good,

  97. but we often do it in a strength that we generate,

  98. in a to-do way of doing it.

  99. And we do it sometimes in the wrong power and for the wrong reasons.

  100. And in this passage, we are called to something we will never fully attain,

  101. this side of heaven.

  102. And what is it?

  103. We will never fully attain it, perfectly live that out.

  104. We are finite creatures.

  105. And in our own strength, we are weak and we are frail

  106. and we are vulnerable to temptation.

  107. And even as we grow in purity, which each of us must do,

  108. as we follow Christ, we each must walk in purity as we can.

  109. And we fall woefully short of the required standard.

  110. And here's the truth, and it's good news.

  111. Only one has kept his way perfectly pure.

  112. Only one has stored God's word in his heart that he might not sin.

  113. Only one has sought God with his whole heart.

  114. And his name is Jesus.

  115. And while we're called to follow his example and to walk according to his ways,

  116. we do not attain purity by discipline and obedience alone.

  117. In fact, the way to break the power of sin in our lives is to entrust ourselves to his righteousness,

  118. is to take all of our hope and lay it on Jesus.

  119. He lived a life that was free from sin and was full of righteousness.

  120. And in his immeasurable love and God's immeasurable wisdom,

  121. God covers us in the righteousness that Jesus earned.

  122. And he's laid upon Jesus the penalty and judgment we have earned.

  123. 2 Corinthians 5 says it very plainly.

  124. For our sake, God made Jesus to be sin,

  125. who knew no sin,

  126. so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  127. This is good news for our functional faith.

  128. Because you don't dig yourself out of the pit.

  129. In God's mercy, he pulls us out of the pit.

  130. And he puts us on a rock.

  131. Firm footing.

  132. When we entrust ourselves to him,

  133. God looks at us not as failures who have to get their acts together,

  134. but as righteous children of God in whom is all his delight.

  135. In whom he pours his grace and his mercy.

  136. For our functional faith,

  137. we don't have to dig ourselves out of a hole to have hope.

  138. No, our functional faith begins when we truly believe this.

  139. Our functional faith begins on a rock.

  140. Out of the muck and out of the mire.

  141. We don't earn God's favor by applying this.

  142. We already have God's favor because of Jesus.

  143. And we run after purity,

  144. not because we want to be free,

  145. but because God has already freed us from the power of sin.

  146. And so as you're thinking about whatever sin came to mind

  147. when I talked about the gap,

  148. where your besetting sins lie,

  149. or where your temptations or doubts lie,

  150. whatever came to mind,

  151. as we approach that very topic,

  152. and as you see this call on how to address your functional faith,

  153. we start with victory.

  154. So as you hear this,

  155. there is no discouragement to be had.

  156. There is no huge mountain to climb.

  157. No, because of God's mercy,

  158. he not only gives us his righteousness,

  159. but in this fight he gives us his help.

  160. And we know,

  161. because the scriptures say it,

  162. you would answer it on a theological test,

  163. that we can do all things in Christ

  164. who strengthens us.

  165. That's the hope we can bring

  166. to dealing with a faith

  167. that doesn't rise to what we know the Bible says.

  168. We can bring hope to it.

  169. And so Lord,

  170. we can say,

  171. squeeze us.

  172. Let us see what we're made of.

  173. And when I see something that falls short of your promises,

  174. remind me of Jesus.

  175. Remind me of Christ.

  176. Remind me of hope

  177. and of the help you provide

  178. when I confess,

  179. when I repent.

  180. And what happens

  181. is our functional faith rises.

  182. All right,

  183. that's just all the introduction.

  184. Are you with me?

  185. Let's jump into the first point.

  186. Relying on God's word.

  187. There's a premise in this passage

  188. that if we don't buy it up front,

  189. we're going to end up applying

  190. the rest of this passage really unhelpfully.

  191. And the premise is this,

  192. that we can keep our way pure

  193. if we live according to God's word.

  194. It says it very plainly in verse nine.

  195. Take a look.

  196. How can a young man keep his way pure?

  197. By guarding it according to your word.

  198. So let me ask you a couple questions

  199. to see if you buy into this premise functionally.

  200. We know the Bible says it.

  201. I just read it to you.

  202. So that's our professed faith.

  203. But do we really believe it?

  204. Let me ask you a couple questions.

  205. In your biggest areas of temptations,

  206. what role does God's word play?

  207. When you're facing hardship

  208. and someone shares the word of God with you,

  209. are you typically resistant to that

  210. or receptive to that?

  211. When you're walking through a trial,

  212. do you find that you spend less time in God's word

  213. or more time in God's word?

  214. If we genuinely functionally believe

  215. that it's God's word living according to that

  216. that keeps our way pure,

  217. in trial we will double down in our time in the word.

  218. We will invest further

  219. because we need the instruction.

  220. We need the reminders.

  221. We need the strength that comes from his authoritative word.

  222. We need to be so sure of what God says in his word

  223. that we will stake all we have

  224. and all we are on what he says.

  225. All right, let me illustrate this.

  226. Let's imagine that I'm friends with a structural engineer.

  227. I know this person to be excellent,

  228. high integrity,

  229. and I've seen her work before

  230. and she does excellent work.

  231. Okay?

  232. I could look closely at the design

  233. and the blueprints of a bridge that's being built

  234. and I could be convinced

  235. she has covered every detail.

  236. I could stand there

  237. and watch the construction team

  238. put the bridge together

  239. and make sure that they don't cut corners

  240. or skip details.

  241. I could walk with her

  242. as she examines the finished product

  243. and watch her sign off on it

  244. that it's ready to bear the weight.

  245. And then I can turn and tell you

  246. that is a bridge that can hold up your weight.

  247. Go ahead and walk across it.

  248. And I haven't yet expressed

  249. an ounce of functional faith.

  250. That's all professed faith.

  251. When do I express functional faith?

  252. When I step on it.

  253. Now, I'm so confident in her work

  254. that I'm entrusting myself to it.

  255. This needs to be our relationship

  256. with the promises of God.

  257. Not that we just learn them,

  258. not that we can teach them,

  259. not that we can sing songs about them

  260. or tell them to others.

  261. Yes, all of that, but not just that.

  262. We need to be so certain of God's promises

  263. that we're gonna step out onto them.

  264. And if I fall, it'll be because God failed,

  265. not because I failed to trust him.

  266. When we're able to do that over and over again,

  267. our functional faith rises to the faith

  268. that we profess and we experience

  269. the power and the care

  270. and the ministry that comes

  271. by trusting in God.

  272. Our goal as Christians,

  273. as we rely on God's word,

  274. is not to trust what we see,

  275. but to trust the one who speaks his promises,

  276. to know the character of God so thoroughly

  277. that when all of the signs around us

  278. betray what we know,

  279. we step anyway because God said it.

  280. Lord, I have no idea what you're doing.

  281. Nothing that's happened in the last weeks

  282. reflects how I understand love.

  283. But you tell me you love me

  284. and you tell me you're going to be there for me.

  285. So I'm not gonna turn from you.

  286. I'm gonna step to you

  287. because anywhere I turn

  288. does not have the words of life.

  289. Only Jesus does.

  290. That's what relying on God's word looks like.

  291. That we entrust all we are

  292. to what he says

  293. and we take him at his word.

  294. So if that's what relying on God's word looks like,

  295. what does it look like to apply God's word?

  296. That's the second point we'll spend most of the time

  297. looking at the rest of this passage

  298. of applying God's word.

  299. About eight years ago now,

  300. I was playing floor hockey

  301. with all the pastors that I serve with.

  302. I serve with 10 other guys now.

  303. It was probably 12 or 13 at that point

  304. before we planted a couple churches.

  305. And we were on a team retreat

  306. and during that retreat,

  307. we always do something athletic

  308. that reminds all of us how old we are.

  309. And floor hockey was the punishment of the day.

  310. So we're playing floor hockey

  311. and we don't use like full sticks

  312. because we'd kill one another.

  313. So we use these little plastic kid sticks.

  314. Right?

  315. It's actually,

  316. we would never allow video out of this.

  317. No one would follow us at church.

  318. But,

  319. so we're running around with these sticks

  320. bent over for like an hour

  321. and I throw my back out.

  322. Right?

  323. Two days later,

  324. I'm at my chiropractor,

  325. a good friend,

  326. and he pays me the most unkind compliment.

  327. Here's what he says to me.

  328. Rob,

  329. your back muscles

  330. are so strong.

  331. It's a good start.

  332. They are overcoming your weak abs.

  333. And then he charged me for the visit

  334. is what happened.

  335. The point there

  336. is that I have a part of my body

  337. that's overdeveloped

  338. or strengthened

  339. and a part of my body

  340. that's underdeveloped.

  341. And that part that's underdeveloped

  342. causes my whole body to suffer.

  343. This is what happens

  344. in our spiritual lives.

  345. We have some areas we love.

  346. Some areas that are easy for us to believe.

  347. Some promises of God

  348. we'd never doubt.

  349. We step out on the bridge.

  350. We do a dance on the bridge.

  351. But there are other areas

  352. we just don't trust him.

  353. We won't entrust ourselves to him.

  354. And those weak areas

  355. are where we get attacked.

  356. So what do we need to do?

  357. What do I need to do

  358. to fix that problem

  359. of my back overcoming my weak

  360. abs?

  361. I need to first of all

  362. stop playing floor hockey

  363. with tiny sticks.

  364. But after that

  365. I need to strengthen

  366. the weak area

  367. so that my body

  368. can be balanced

  369. and healthy.

  370. We need to strengthen

  371. the weak areas

  372. of our lives

  373. of our spiritual lives

  374. so that our whole soul

  375. can be balanced

  376. and strengthened.

  377. And this passage

  378. gives us seven areas

  379. we can examine.

  380. The first one

  381. is treasuring

  382. God's word.

  383. Take a look at verse 10.

  384. With my whole heart

  385. I seek you.

  386. Let me not wander

  387. from your commandments.

  388. Let's just accept

  389. the truth of this.

  390. We treasure

  391. what is most important

  392. to us.

  393. It's not necessarily

  394. objectively

  395. the greatest thing.

  396. It's just subjective

  397. in our hearts.

  398. What matters most

  399. to us

  400. is what we treasure.

  401. And it's not necessarily

  402. the most monetary

  403. you know

  404. the highest monetary value.

  405. If you've had

  406. a house fire

  407. just imagine

  408. a house fire

  409. you're not running

  410. and grabbing

  411. the sofa

  412. and the TV.

  413. You're not running

  414. to get the piano

  415. out of the house.

  416. You're running

  417. to get the kids

  418. and things

  419. like photographs.

  420. Hopefully in that order

  421. not the photographs first.

  422. Get the kids safe

  423. and then you can get

  424. the other things.

  425. We treasure

  426. what matters

  427. most to us.

  428. Jesus' relationship

  429. with God's word

  430. was very clear.

  431. He treasured

  432. the word of God

  433. and always did

  434. the will of the Father.

  435. David's relationship

  436. with the word of God

  437. was very clear.

  438. When he treasured

  439. God's word

  440. he was victorious.

  441. He walked in strength.

  442. Even when chased

  443. by Saul

  444. he brought honor

  445. to God.

  446. When he failed

  447. to entrust himself

  448. to God's word

  449. when he ceased

  450. to treasure it

  451. he falls into sin.

  452. Growing

  453. knowing

  454. in how

  455. you treasure

  456. God's word

  457. will strengthen

  458. you from the inside out.

  459. Okay the first

  460. area

  461. we need to examine

  462. is how are we doing

  463. at treasuring

  464. the word of God.

  465. Next

  466. we memorize

  467. God's word.

  468. Take a look

  469. at verse 11.

  470. I have stored up

  471. your word

  472. in my heart

  473. that I might not

  474. sin against you.

  475. Many times

  476. we don't obey

  477. because we don't know

  478. what God has to say

  479. on the matter.

  480. Often times

  481. conviction

  482. comes not

  483. as we're

  484. considering a sin

  485. but in the aftermath

  486. of a sin.

  487. But if God's word

  488. is stored

  489. in our hearts

  490. it's always there

  491. to instruct us.

  492. And if we believe

  493. that the way

  494. we keep our way

  495. pure

  496. is by guarding it

  497. according to his word

  498. and that word

  499. is in our arsenal

  500. for whatever battle

  501. we would face

  502. each day

  503. then we

  504. don't live

  505. in ignorance.

  506. We don't live

  507. below what he's

  508. called us to.

  509. We can rise

  510. to what he's

  511. called us to

  512. because we know

  513. what his will is.

  514. We know

  515. what he says.

  516. And when we talk

  517. about Bible memory

  518. some will say

  519. okay I'm in

  520. I get it

  521. I'm going to start

  522. memorizing my Bible

  523. and you start

  524. by memorizing

  525. Psalm 119

  526. in its entirety

  527. or the book

  528. of Philippians

  529. or the book

  530. of Romans.

  531. And those are

  532. fine things to do

  533. I don't want

  534. to demean that.

  535. I'm suggesting

  536. however a starting

  537. place be a little

  538. more strategic

  539. than that.

  540. Remember the gap

  541. between our

  542. professed faith

  543. and our functional

  544. faith.

  545. Whatever temptations

  546. or sins

  547. are living there

  548. memorize passages

  549. of the scriptures

  550. that address

  551. those things.

  552. don't start

  553. with large

  554. books of the

  555. Bible.

  556. Be surgical

  557. in how

  558. you equip

  559. your heart

  560. to engage

  561. battle.

  562. And then as you

  563. see strength

  564. grow

  565. as you grow

  566. in holiness

  567. and you see

  568. the value

  569. of God's word

  570. applied in

  571. specific areas

  572. then we can go

  573. to larger chapters

  574. or books

  575. of the Bible.

  576. It's a wonderful

  577. exercise

  578. spiritual discipline

  579. but be strategic

  580. first.

  581. Address those

  582. areas in the gap

  583. and watch

  584. it close.

  585. Next

  586. we study

  587. God's word.

  588. Look at verse 12.

  589. Blessed are you

  590. oh Lord

  591. teach me

  592. your statutes.

  593. A disciple

  594. of Jesus

  595. infers

  596. that we are

  597. not only

  598. following

  599. but learning

  600. from.

  601. That's what

  602. disciple is.

  603. Someone who is

  604. learning from

  605. a teacher.

  606. And so we need

  607. to be growing

  608. in our knowledge

  609. and understanding

  610. of God's word.

  611. That means we

  612. read God's word.

  613. When we read it

  614. we tear it apart.

  615. We try to understand

  616. the argument

  617. that's being made.

  618. We look at the

  619. passages before

  620. and after what

  621. we're studying

  622. to understand

  623. the context

  624. of it.

  625. We read books

  626. about God's word

  627. so that we can

  628. understand from

  629. people who are

  630. ahead of us

  631. in our study

  632. what do they say

  633. that means

  634. and we consider

  635. that in light

  636. of God's word.

  637. God's word.

  638. This is why

  639. there are things

  640. like Bible studies

  641. biblical counseling

  642. and fellowship.

  643. It's why

  644. in small groups

  645. I recommend

  646. that everybody

  647. in the small group

  648. bring a Bible

  649. and open it

  650. before the discussion

  651. starts

  652. with the expectation

  653. at some point

  654. we're going to be

  655. in this thing.

  656. We study

  657. God's word

  658. and as we grow

  659. in our knowledge

  660. we understand

  661. the will of the

  662. Lord much better.

  663. next we share

  664. God's word.

  665. Look at verse 13.

  666. With my lips

  667. I declare

  668. all the rules

  669. of your mouth.

  670. Listen

  671. following the Lord

  672. is very difficult

  673. if you are not

  674. actively sharing

  675. with others

  676. sharing

  677. with the lost

  678. or your co-workers

  679. fellow students

  680. neighbors

  681. friends

  682. family members

  683. now why

  684. is that?

  685. What happens

  686. when you evangelize

  687. is you start

  688. to get arguments

  689. back

  690. about why

  691. what you're saying

  692. may be untrue.

  693. Yeah but what

  694. about this?

  695. And what about

  696. doesn't the Bible

  697. say this?

  698. And what about

  699. this contradiction

  700. in the Bible?

  701. And what that does

  702. to a disciple

  703. of Christ

  704. is as we share

  705. with God's word

  706. we may get questions

  707. we don't know

  708. answers to.

  709. And we hate

  710. that feeling

  711. and we be embarrassed

  712. by that

  713. and so we don't share.

  714. But if you do share

  715. and you get a question

  716. you don't know

  717. the answer to

  718. I have a script

  719. for you.

  720. You ready?

  721. That is a great question.

  722. I don't know.

  723. Let me find someone

  724. who does

  725. and I will get back

  726. to you.

  727. And now you become

  728. the student

  729. and you go

  730. and you learn

  731. and you realize

  732. I didn't really love

  733. that feeling

  734. of not knowing

  735. so I want to make sure

  736. I know this thing better

  737. so that as I'm sharing

  738. I'm more equipped

  739. to give a reason

  740. for the hope

  741. that lives within me.

  742. And being a sharer

  743. of the gospel

  744. forces you by default

  745. to become a knower

  746. of God's word.

  747. If we don't share

  748. we isolate

  749. and we only actually

  750. share eternal things

  751. with people

  752. who are safe

  753. to us

  754. with people

  755. that probably

  756. already agree

  757. with all of the things

  758. you think

  759. and we don't get

  760. pressed deeper

  761. and broader

  762. in the word of God.

  763. Next we love

  764. God's word

  765. above all else.

  766. Verse 14

  767. In the way

  768. of your testimonies

  769. I delight

  770. as much

  771. as in all riches.

  772. Now this parallels

  773. treasuring God's word

  774. very carefully

  775. but the way

  776. this is worded

  777. begs this question

  778. what do you love

  779. more than God's word?

  780. Is it your freedom?

  781. Your liberties?

  782. And your concern

  783. if you just

  784. put God's word first

  785. you'd have to stop this

  786. or start that.

  787. I know

  788. the temptation

  789. for me

  790. is that

  791. I love peace

  792. particularly peace

  793. in my home.

  794. It doesn't mean

  795. the noise

  796. of a family

  797. it's the conflict

  798. that I really despise.

  799. I love peace

  800. between my kids

  801. and when you have six

  802. there's a lot of ways

  803. for them to trip up

  804. and be in increased

  805. conflict.

  806. Now

  807. that sounds like

  808. a fine thing

  809. to love right?

  810. Shouldn't everybody

  811. love peace

  812. between their kids?

  813. Rob aren't you

  814. so admirable?

  815. No I

  816. can

  817. when peace

  818. is shaken

  819. my temptation

  820. is to just

  821. override it

  822. with

  823. loud

  824. calls

  825. to peace.

  826. There was a time

  827. I could raise

  828. my voice

  829. above the rest

  830. of my kids.

  831. Some of the kids

  832. in the military

  833. are louder than me

  834. now they can

  835. get their voice

  836. up there.

  837. That's my temptation

  838. and

  839. in my home

  840. I've got to be aware

  841. I need to love God

  842. more than I love peace.

  843. I mean God

  844. loves peace

  845. between my kids

  846. but he doesn't want me

  847. to sin to get it.

  848. I need to love God

  849. actively

  850. moment by moment

  851. more than I love

  852. the other valid things

  853. that I love.

  854. So consider

  855. what is it

  856. that you're tempted

  857. to put above

  858. the word of God

  859. and remember

  860. if you live

  861. according to that

  862. you'll not keep

  863. your way pure.

  864. We need to live

  865. according to God's word

  866. and the best way

  867. to love this thing

  868. is to do it

  869. under the word of God

  870. and not

  871. aside

  872. or above

  873. the word of God.

  874. Number six

  875. meditate

  876. on God's word.

  877. Look at verse 15

  878. I will meditate

  879. on your precepts

  880. and fix my eyes

  881. on your ways.

  882. Now Christian meditation

  883. is a lost art

  884. and a lot of Christians

  885. don't like using

  886. the word now

  887. because it

  888. conjures up

  889. eastern religion

  890. it conjures up

  891. visions of

  892. of us all

  893. doing yoga together

  894. and let me just

  895. suggest

  896. that's not the

  897. historic use

  898. of the word

  899. and it's not

  900. what's intended

  901. in the scriptures

  902. when that word

  903. is used.

  904. Meditation

  905. is dwelling

  906. on a word

  907. or a passage

  908. or a chapter

  909. just dwelling

  910. there

  911. asking it questions

  912. until it illuminates

  913. something in your soul

  914. until it illuminates

  915. something in your mind.

  916. it's taking a passage

  917. and asking

  918. perhaps some of these

  919. questions

  920. what claim

  921. is this making

  922. on my life

  923. right now?

  924. If I were to

  925. apply this passage

  926. what would need

  927. to change

  928. in my

  929. perspective?

  930. What words

  931. are the key words

  932. in this verse

  933. and why

  934. is this author

  935. using those words

  936. and not other words?

  937. like these kinds

  938. of things

  939. you'll find

  940. as you dwell

  941. and you meditate

  942. on this

  943. it slows us

  944. down

  945. and it allows

  946. us to reflect

  947. one of the enemies

  948. of meditation

  949. is the Bible

  950. reading plan

  951. to read it

  952. in a year

  953. I'm for you

  954. doing that

  955. I'm not against it

  956. I'm suggesting

  957. though that

  958. that should probably

  959. be outside

  960. of your quiet time

  961. as additional reading

  962. allow time

  963. in your quiet time

  964. to slow down

  965. to not finish

  966. the list

  967. allow God

  968. to say

  969. hey pause here

  970. for a minute

  971. I want to do

  972. some business

  973. with you

  974. in this verse

  975. but God

  976. I've got three

  977. other chapters

  978. to get to

  979. yeah you don't

  980. want to put

  981. God on hold

  982. if he wants

  983. to speak

  984. you want to

  985. let him in

  986. and you want

  987. to slow down

  988. and you want

  989. to hear

  990. what the spirit

  991. of God

  992. has to say

  993. to you

  994. and then lastly

  995. verse 16

  996. we remember

  997. what we know

  998. it says

  999. I will delight

  1000. in your statutes

  1001. I will not

  1002. forget

  1003. your word

  1004. and I do believe

1005. this is the Achilles heel

  1006. in Christian living

  1007. we forget

  1008. what

  1009. we know

  1010. you know

1011. I tried to sit down

  1012. one time

  1013. and add up

  1014. the number of sermons

  1015. I've sat under

  1016. and listened to

  1017. the amount of truth

  1018. that I gave up

  1019. by the way

  1020. the amount of truth

  1021. that God

  1022. in his kindness

  1023. has revealed to me

  1024. think about that

  1025. in your own life

  1026. how many sermons

  1027. have you sat under

1028. and how much of that

1029. can you draw to mind

  1030. right now

  1031. we forget

  1032. so much

1033. and one of the reasons

  1034. is we don't purpose

  1035. to remember

  1036. we listen attentively

  1037. we're grateful

  1038. for the word

  1039. we may be moved

  1040. but in two weeks

  1041. you probably won't

  1042. remember the sponge

  1043. right

  1044. you won't remember

  1045. perhaps

  1046. some of the passages

  1047. that have been shared

  1048. we forget

  1049. and here

  1050. the psalmist says

  1051. I will not

  1052. forget your word

  1053. and so

  1054. let me just suggest

  1055. a way or two

1056. you can be a rememberer

  1057. of God's word

  1058. if you are not

  1059. typically a note taker

  1060. let me encourage you

  1061. to take notes

  1062. when you do that

  1063. you not only create

  1064. a record

1065. of what you've been taught

  1066. you're engaging

  1067. a different part

  1068. of your brain

  1069. than you do

  1070. when you're listening

1071. and now there's two ways

  1072. that you're storing

  1073. things in your heart

  1074. through your ears

  1075. and through your writing

  1076. okay

  1077. if you are

  1078. a note taker

  1079. let me encourage

  1080. the habit of revisiting

  1081. the notes

  1082. once a month

  1083. quarterly

  1084. go back through

  1085. what you've learned

  1086. so far

  1087. make it an annual

  1088. habit

  1089. to skim through

  1090. all the notes

  1091. you've taken

  1092. that year

  1093. as you come up

  1094. on New Year's Eve

  1095. celebrate the end

  1096. of a year

  1097. by worshiping God

  1098. and thanking him

  1099. for all he's taught

  1100. you that year

  1101. you'll remember more

  1102. and you'll see

  1103. you fall in line

  1104. with the psalmist

  1105. now

1106. I'm coming to an end

  1107. I promise

1108. but I want to pull

  1109. all of this together

1110. and I want to illustrate

  1111. for you

1112. what it could look like

1113. what would it look like

1114. if we did all these verses

  1115. at once

  1116. if we just lived

  1117. according

  1118. to

  1119. Psalm 119

    Psalms 119:9–16

  1120. verses 9 to 16

  1121. so

  1122. in your life

1123. I want you to get

  1124. specific

  1125. let's say you're trying

  1126. to overcome

  1127. an area of sin

  1128. and you identified

  1129. that sin

  1130. as pride

  1131. I want to suggest

  1132. to you

  1133. you're not yet done

  1134. because pride

  1135. is the root

  1136. of all sin

  1137. right

  1138. it's really

  1139. too broad

  1140. to specifically

  1141. repent of

  1142. I mean

  1143. don't entertain it

  1144. you want to confess

  1145. your pride

  1146. but try to get

  1147. more specific

  1148. maybe it's anger

  1149. maybe it's arrogance

  1150. maybe it's envy

  1151. something more specific

1152. we're going to come up

  1153. with an example here

  1154. that I want to

  1155. walk you through

  1156. let's say you struggle

  1157. with unforgiveness

  1158. toward a friend

  1159. that's specific

  1160. it's about

  1161. a specific person

  1162. of a specific

  1163. relationship

  1164. and a specific

  1165. sin

  1166. they hurt you

  1167. in significant

  1168. ways

  1169. and you can't

  1170. seem

  1171. to forgive

  1172. and in your

  1173. regular daily

  1174. quiet time

  1175. which you still

  1176. have

  1177. you come across

  1178. Colossians 3

  1179. 13

  1180. it says this

  1181. bearing

  1182. with one another

  1183. and if one

  1184. has a complaint

  1185. against another

  1186. forgiving each other

  1187. as the Lord

  1188. has forgiven you

  1189. so you also

  1190. must forgive

  1191. and the Spirit

  1192. slows you down

  1193. there

  1194. and you're like

  1195. ooh

  1196. God doesn't want me

1197. to go on to the

  1198. next verse

  1199. just yet

  1200. and so you read

  1201. it again

  1202. and you look

  1203. for a way out

  1204. you're hoping

  1205. there's some

  1206. except in your

  1207. case

  1208. clause

  1209. right

  1210. you keep looking

  1211. and you're like

  1212. surely

  1213. this can't mean

  1214. that I'm supposed

  1215. to forgive

  1216. this person

  1217. and you realize

  1218. there's no

  1219. escape clause

  1220. there's no

  1221. hatch for you

  1222. to pop out

  1223. of that

  1224. that command

  1225. and you just

  1226. say honestly

  1227. to the Lord

  1228. I can't

  1229. I can't

  1230. forgive

  1231. and this is

  1232. right where

  1233. many of us

  1234. stop

  1235. we see the

  1236. command

  1237. we don't believe

  1238. we can obey

  1239. and we live in

  1240. opposition to

  1241. God's word

  1242. and God's

  1243. desire for us

  1244. we fail to move

  1245. toward obedience

  1246. because we don't

  1247. believe we can do

  1248. it

  1249. and we're right

  1250. left to ourselves

  1251. we cannot

  1252. do it

  1253. but God

  1254. can

  1255. through us

  1256. how

  1257. how does he do

  1258. that

  1259. first we look

  1260. in the verse

  1261. for help

  1262. and it doesn't

  1263. say forgive

  1264. as much as

  1265. you are able

  1266. if you were able

  1267. you would have

  1268. done it already

  1269. no the verse

  1270. says as the

  1271. Lord has

  1272. forgiven you

  1273. and we ask

  1274. that phrase

  1275. some questions

  1276. how has the

  1277. Lord forgiven

  1278. me

  1279. and we realize

  1280. it is

  1281. completely

  1282. it is

  1283. sacrificially

  1284. it is

  1285. lovingly

  1286. and okay

  1287. that is clear

  1288. to us

  1289. but maybe

  1290. that is

  1291. just Paul

  1292. to the

  1293. Colossian

  1294. church

  1295. is this

  1296. anywhere else

  1297. in the

  1298. Bible

  1299. that we are

  1300. supposed to

  1301. forgive

  1302. as we are

  1303. forgiven

  1304. and we

  1305. look at

  1306. a cross

  1307. reference

  1308. that

  1309. superscript

  1310. italicized

  1311. letters

  1312. in your

  1313. Bible

  1314. and we

  1315. let it

  1316. take us

  1317. to Mark

  1318. 17

  1319. sorry

  1320. to Mark

  1321. there is no

  1322. Mark 17

  1323. it says

  1324. 11

  1325. I don't know

  1326. why I said

  1327. 17

  1328. to Mark

    Mark 11:25

  1329. 11

  1330. verse 25

  1331. listen

  1332. this is

  1333. Jesus

  1334. talking

  1335. and whenever

  1336. you stand

  1337. praying

  1338. forgive

  1339. and if you

  1340. have anything

  1341. against anyone

  1342. so that

  1343. your father

  1344. also who is

  1345. in heaven

  1346. may forgive

  1347. you

  1348. your

  1349. trespasses

  1350. and you see

  1351. that doesn't

  1352. give you a lot

  1353. of new

  1354. information

  1355. because it's

  1356. kind of the

  1357. same thing

  1358. Paul said

  1359. but it's

  1360. a different

  1361. author

  1362. and it's

  1363. a different

  1364. speaker

  1365. and it's

  1366. a different

  1367. context

  1368. so God

  1369. must mean

  1370. this thing

  1371. and you're

  1372. saying

  1373. I can't

  1374. do it

  1375. Lord

  1376. holds even

  1377. less weight

  1378. because you

  1379. see God

  1380. repeated

  1381. himself

  1382. when God

  1383. repeats

  1384. himself

  1385. we pay

  1386. special

  1387. attention

  1388. and so

  1389. our love

  1390. for God

  1391. is stirred

  1392. and it

  1393. overcomes

  1394. our weakness

  1395. to forgive

  1396. and we just

  1397. say Lord

  1398. I need

  1399. more help

  1400. and we

  1401. go to

  1402. our

  1403. concordances

  1404. which for

  1405. many of

  1406. us are

  1407. in the

  1408. back of

  1409. our

  1410. Bibles

  1411. and we

  1412. look up

  1413. the word

  1414. forgive

  1415. and as

  1416. we do

  1417. that

  1418. we come

  1419. across

  1420. Romans 4

  1421. blessed

  1422. are those

  1423. whose lawless

  1424. deeds are

  1425. forgiven

  1426. and whose

  1427. sins

  1428. are covered

  1429. blessed

  1430. is the man

  1431. against whom

  1432. the Lord

  1433. will not

  1434. count his

  1435. sin

  1436. blessed

  1437. is the man

  1438. against whom

  1439. the Lord

  1440. will not

  1441. count his

  1442. sin

  1443. and we

  1444. freeze

  1445. why do we

  1446. freeze there

  1447. because

  1448. that causes

  1449. us to

  1450. remember

  1451. all of

  1452. the things

  1453. God

  1454. could hold

  1455. against

  1456. us

  1457. but in

  1458. his love

  1459. he forgives

  1460. and it

  1461. hits us

  1462. like a ton

  1463. of bricks

  1464. that all

  1465. of this

  1466. help we're

  1467. getting from

  1468. the Bible

  1469. is the

  1470. love of

  1471. God

  1472. while I'm

  1473. actively

  1474. sinning

  1475. against

  1476. him

  1477. by not

  1478. forgiving

  1479. what

  1480. unbelievable

  1481. mercy

  1482. we receive

  1483. from God

  1484. how

  1485. could we

  1486. receive

  1487. such

  1488. grace

  1489. and not

  1490. in turn

  1491. extend that

  1492. to others

  1493. how did

  1494. we arrive

  1495. at this

  1496. illumination

  1497. of what we're

  1498. actually doing

  1499. how did we

  1500. arrive

  1501. at such

  1502. gratitude

  1503. for God

  1504. we guarded

  1505. our heart

  1506. according to

  1507. his word

  1508. we simply

  1509. meditated

  1510. and studied

  1511. we treasured

  1512. we followed

  1513. Psalm 119

    Psalms 119:9–16

  1514. verses 9

  1515. through 16

  1516. and it

  1517. changed us

  1518. but at that

  1519. very moment

  1520. we've come to

  1521. this enlightened

  1522. place

  1523. of professed

  1524. faith

  1525. now

  1526. we take

  1527. what God

  1528. just taught

  1529. us

  1530. and we

  1531. step

  1532. out

  1533. on it

  1534. and we

  1535. go

  1536. and we

  1537. forgive

  1538. now

  1539. we've

  1540. exercised

  1541. the very

  1542. thing

  1543. God

  1544. has shown

  1545. us

  1546. to be

  1547. true

  1548. and our

  1549. functional

  1550. faith

  1551. ratchets

  1552. up

  1553. that's just

  1554. one example

  1555. in one

  1556. situation

  1557. from one

  1558. passage

  1559. that can

  1560. really help

  1561. us

  1562. to grow

  1563. imagine

  1564. if we

  1565. treated

  1566. the whole

  1567. book

  1568. that way

  1569. what

  1570. strength

  1571. and deliverance

  1572. and riches

  1573. are available

  1574. to us

  1575. and we

  1576. remind ourselves

  1577. as I close

  1578. that we

  1579. don't

  1580. so God

  1581. loves us

  1582. more

  1583. no we

  1584. grow in

  1585. treasuring

  1586. God's word

  1587. and living

  1588. according to

  1589. it because

  1590. he already

  1591. loves us

  1592. immeasurably

  1593. we come

  1594. to this

  1595. and abide

  1596. by it

  1597. because it

  1598. is God's

  1599. good will

  1600. for those

  1601. he's already

  1602. loved

  1603. those he's

  1604. already

  1605. adopted

  1606. those he's

  1607. already

  1608. sanctified

  1609. he's in the

  1610. midst of

  1611. changing you

  1612. from one

  1613. degree of

  1614. glory to

  1615. another

  1616. so that

  1617. next year

  1618. you are

  1619. more like

  1620. Jesus

  1621. than you

  1622. are right

  1623. now

  1624. because by

  1625. the grace

  1626. of God

  1627. you are

  1628. more like

  1629. Jesus

  1630. now than

  1631. you were

  1632. last year

  1633. this is

  1634. God's

  1635. work

  1636. and he's

  1637. going to

  1638. finish it

  1639. he's going

  1640. to be

  1641. faithful

  1642. as you

  1643. abide

  1644. in it

  1645. he will

  1646. be faithful

  1647. to bring

  1648. himself

  1649. glory

  1650. to bring

  1651. you his

  1652. blessing

  1653. to use

  1654. you

  1655. to help

  1656. others walk

  1657. across that

  1658. bridge

  1659. because you

  1660. can say

  1661. oh I

  1662. remember

  1663. when I

  1664. was afraid

  1665. of that

  1666. bridge

  1667. you watch

  1668. me walk

  1669. across

  1670. and then

  1671. you come

  1672. with me

  1673. this

  1674. will help

  1675. us close

  1676. this gap

  1677. amen

  1678. let me

  1679. pray

  1680. father

  1681. father

  1682. your word

  1683. is powerful

  1684. it is

  1685. personal

  1686. it is

  1687. living

  1688. and active

  1689. and we

  1690. pray lord

  1691. that in

  1692. each of

  1693. our lives

  1694. in each

  1695. of our

  1696. trials

  1697. by the

  1698. precision

  1699. and power

  1700. of your

  1701. spirit

  1702. you would

  1703. apply your

  1704. word

  1705. so that

  1706. we can

  1707. bring you

  1708. more glory

  1709. and honor

  1710. by how

  1711. we live

  1712. lord help

  1713. us

  1714. in the name

  1715. of jesus

  1716. amen

  1717. to

  1718. end

  1719. before

  1720. like

  1721. we

  1722. we

  1723. have

  1724. we

  1725. have

  1726. you

  1727. которой

  1728. i

  1729. want

  1730. of jesus

  1731. to

  1732. this

  1733. food

  1734. you

  1735. you

  1736. you

  1737. you

  1738. you

  1739. you

  1740. you

  1741. you

  1742. you

  1743. you

  1744. you
