  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. I say this every week, but I mean it every week.

  3. It really is a joy and a privilege to worship with you

  4. and to be able to preach God's word to you.

  5. Please turn with me in your Bibles to Exodus chapter 23.

    Exodus 23 chapter mention

  6. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand

  7. and we'll bring a Bible to you

  8. that you can use while you're here.

  9. We are at the end of the book of the covenant

  10. in Exodus 23 verses 10 to 19 today.

    Exodus 23:10–19

  11. I think we've been in Exodus for almost a year now

  12. because we had some breaks in between.

  13. And believe it or not, we're actually coming near to an end

  14. because the latter half of Exodus goes by pretty quickly.

  15. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  16. Heavenly Father,

  17. we have gathered in the name of your son Jesus Christ once again

  18. to remember your faithfulness,

  19. to remember your promises

  20. so that we might live our lives trusting you,

  21. leaning on you.

  22. For we know that you are the one sure foundation

  23. who will never let us down.

  24. So inspire fresh faith among us this morning

  25. as we look at your word.

  26. Speak to us.

  27. Remind us of your goodness,

  28. your grace,

  29. so that we marvel again

  30. and worship you with our whole heart.

  31. In Jesus' name we pray.

  32. Amen.

  33. If you're able,

  34. please stand for the reading of God's word

  35. from Exodus 23 verses 10 to 19.

    Exodus 23:10–19

  36. And we'll read for us.

  37. For six years,

  38. you shall sow your land and gather in its yield.

  39. But the seventh year,

  40. you shall let it rest and lie fallow

  41. that the poor of your people may eat

  42. and what they leave,

  43. the beasts of the field may eat.

  44. You shall do likewise with your vineyard

  45. and with your olive orchard.

  46. Six days,

  47. you shall do your work,

  48. but on the seventh day,

  49. you shall rest

  50. that your ox and your donkey may have rest

  51. and the son of your servant woman

  52. and the alien may be refreshed.

  53. Pay attention

  54. to all that I have said to you

  55. and make no mention

  56. of the names of other gods,

  57. nor let it be heard on your lips.

  58. Three times in a year,

  59. you shall keep a feast to me.

  60. You shall keep the feast of unleavened bread.

  61. As I commanded you,

  62. you shall eat unleavened bread

  63. for seven days at the appointed time

  64. in the month of Abib.

  65. For in it,

  66. you came out of Egypt.

  67. None shall appear before me empty-handed.

  68. You shall keep the feast of harvest

  69. of the first fruits of your labor,

  70. of what you sow in the field.

  71. You shall keep the feast of ingathering

  72. at the end of the year,

  73. when you gather in from the field

  74. of fruit of your labor.

  75. Three times in the year,

  76. shall all your males appear

  77. before the Lord God.

  78. You shall not offer the blood

  79. of my sacrifice with anything leavened,

  80. or let the fat of my feast

  81. remain until the morning.

  82. The best of the first fruits

  83. of your ground,

  84. you shall bring into the house

  85. of the Lord your God.

  86. You shall not boil a young goat

  87. in its mother's milk.

  88. This is God's holy

  89. and authoritative word.

  90. You may be seated.

  91. Yeah.

  92. In the United States,

  93. the Congress has the right

  94. to declare a federal holiday,

  95. and that's when all the non-essential

  96. federal government offices are closed,

  97. and the federal government employees

  98. get a paid day off.

  99. So for example,

  100. we have President's Day coming up,

  101. which is officially Washington's birthday,

  102. when we celebrate the founding father

  103. and the first president

  104. of the United States.

  105. And then Independence Day

  106. similarly celebrates

  107. the U.S. Declaration of Independence

  108. from British rule.

  109. And Juneteenth

  110. and Martin Luther King Jr. Day

  111. celebrate the emancipation

  112. of African American slaves

  113. and the triumphs

  114. of the civil rights leader,

  115. respectively.

  116. Memorial Day honors

  117. U.S. military personnel

  118. who fought and died

  119. while protecting this country.

  120. That's just a sampling of,

  121. it's not all the holidays,

  122. but these are not,

  123. you know,

  124. arbitrary days

  125. that some politicians

  126. just chose

  127. to give some people

  128. a paid day off.

  129. These are reminders.

  130. They serve as reminders

  131. of significant

  132. historical milestones

  133. and foster intentionally

  134. a sense of national identity

  135. and solidarity.

  136. The same was true

  137. for the nation of Israel,

  138. where the people observed

  139. holy days

  140. and feasts

  141. that were designated

  142. not by men

  143. but by God.

  144. Holy days are,

  145. in fact,

  146. where we get the word

  147. holiday.

  148. And this passage

  149. tells us about

  150. the seventh year

  151. and the seventh day

  152. and then about

  153. the three feasts,

  154. the major feasts,

  155. the pilgrimage feasts

  156. that the Israelites

  157. were supposed to celebrate.

  158. And then we're going to talk

  159. finally about

  160. the one God

  161. we are to worship

  162. and pay attention to.

  163. So let's first look

  164. at the seventh year

  165. and day.

  166. The first two paragraphs

  167. of this passage,

  168. verses 10 to 11

  169. and verse 12,

  170. each begin with the number six.

  171. So if you look at it,

  172. it says first six years

  173. in the verse 10

  174. and six days

  175. in verse 12.

  176. It says in verse 10

  177. to 11,

  178. for six years

  179. you shall sow your land

  180. and gather in its yield,

  181. but the seventh year

  182. you shall let it rest

  183. and lie fallow

  184. that the poor

  185. of your people may eat

  186. and what they leave

  187. the beasts

  188. of the field may eat.

  189. You shall do likewise

  190. with your vineyard

  191. and with your olive orchard.

  192. This is an extension

  193. of the fourth commandment

  194. of the 10 commandments,

  195. the Sabbath principle

  196. of working for six days

  197. but resting

  198. on the seventh day.

  199. For six years

  200. the Israelites

  201. are supposed to work

  202. the land,

  203. but on the seventh year

  204. they are to let

  205. the land rest

  206. and leave it fallow,

  207. meaning uncultivated.

  208. They're not supposed

  209. to work the ground.

  210. It's not only the people

  211. who need rest,

  212. this verse tells us,

  213. even the land

  214. needs rest.

  215. It's supposed to rest

  216. and observe the Sabbath.

  217. Leviticus 25,

  218. 2-7,

  219. which provides more details

  220. regarding this command,

  221. specifically says

  222. that the land

  223. shall keep

  224. a Sabbath

  225. to the Lord.

  226. The farming benefits

  227. of leaving a land

  228. fallow for a time

  229. is widely known.

  230. When you leave the land

  231. unworked

  232. and unfarmed,

  233. it restores

  234. the nutrients,

  235. restores organic matter

  236. to the soil.

  237. That's why periodically

  238. if you have potted soil,

  239. you have to replace it

  240. so that your plants

  241. can keep thriving

  242. because it has

  243. fresh nutrients.

  244. It also disrupts

  245. the pest cycle,

  246. the pest's life cycle

  247. because they don't have

  248. anything to feed on

  249. and grow on,

  250. so they die off

  251. and you have

  252. pest-free ground

  253. in which to plant.

  254. And it also gets rid

  255. of soil-borne pathogens

  256. like bacteria

  257. and fungi

  258. and roundworms

  259. that infect plant roots.

  260. The land also

  261. needs rest.

  262. But this is not

  263. the reason

  264. that is given

  265. explicitly here

  266. in this context

  267. for letting the land

  268. lie fallow.

  269. The reason God gives here

  270. is in verse 11,

  271. that the poor

  272. of your people

  273. may eat

  274. and what they leave,

  275. the beasts

  276. of the field

  277. may eat.

  278. You might be wondering,

  279. well,

  280. if they're not farming

  281. on the seventh year,

  282. what is there to eat?

  283. And the answer is that

  284. in the way

  285. the Israelites

  286. in the ancient world

  287. farmed,

  288. inevitably there would

  289. be seeds spilled

  290. during the harvest

  291. and there would be

  292. some natural growth

  293. without any intervention

  294. from human beings.

  295. And so there would be

  296. crops that they could

  297. eat of.

  298. And the Israelites

  299. were allowed to forage

  300. and eat,

  301. but they were never

  302. to harvest that

  303. on the seventh year

  304. so that there's enough

  305. left for the poor

  306. among them to eat

  307. and after them

  308. even the beasts

  309. of the field

  310. to eat.

  311. So the same principle

  312. applied for

  313. the olive orchards

  314. with the olives

  315. and also the vineyards

  316. with the grapes.

  317. And it's not only

  318. on the seventh year

  319. that the poor

  320. get to eat

  321. because God

  322. in Deuteronomy 24,

  323. 19 commands this,

  324. when you reap

  325. your harvest

  326. in your field

  327. and forget a sheaf

  328. in the field,

  329. you shall not go back

  330. to get it.

  331. It shall be for

  332. the sojourner,

  333. the fatherless,

  334. and the widow

  335. that the Lord

  336. your God

  337. may bless you

  338. in all the work

  339. of your hands.

  340. So even during

  341. the normal harvest times,

  342. the Israelites

  343. were forbidden

  344. from returning

  345. to collect

  346. dropped sheaves

  347. in the field.

  348. They were to leave it

  349. so that the poor

  350. among them

  351. can collect it

  352. and eat.

  353. So then in the six years

  354. of work,

  355. as well as on the seventh year

  356. when they are resting,

  357. God makes specific

  358. provisions for the poor

  359. among the Israelites.

  360. It would have been tempting

  361. for the Israelites

  362. to harvest the crops

  363. that are growing

  364. unsupervised on their land

  365. during the year of rest.

  366. You know,

  367. they could have

  368. thought to themselves,

  369. well, it is my land

  370. after all,

  371. and it is growing

  372. on my land,

  373. so let me just go there

  374. and pick the field clean

  375. and I could have

  376. the produce

  377. for my family.

  378. But that exactly,

  379. that attitude

  380. is exactly the problem.

  381. In that same chapter

  382. in Leviticus 25,

  383. when God commands

  384. the Sabbath year

  385. for the land

  386. and the year of Jubilee,

  387. God says in verse 23,

  388. the land shall not be sold

  389. in perpetuity

  390. for the land is mine.

  391. For you are strangers

  392. and sojourners with me.

  393. That's an amazing concept.

  394. God does not want

  395. the Israelites to forget

  396. that the land

  397. that they're living on

  398. is actually God's land.

  399. God gave it to them.

  400. God owns it.

  401. And they are living

  402. on it as sojourners.

  403. They're mooching off of God.

  404. They are aliens

  405. and sojourners in the land.

  406. So the Sabbath year

  407. for the land

  408. is a reminder

  409. to the Israelites

  410. of this theological reality.

  411. We need to remember this

  412. about,

  413. not only about the ground,

  414. but all the gifts,

  415. in fact,

  416. that God has given us as well.

  417. It's easy for us to think,

  418. well,

  419. I worked hard

  420. to earn this money,

  421. so I'm going to keep

  422. every dollar for myself,

  423. but not so fast.

  424. Walden Wall,

  425. who wrote a book

  426. called Money and the Gospel,

  427. says this,

  428. one of the great

  429. presumptuous sins

  430. of humanity

  431. is the thinking

  432. that we create success

  433. and influence

  434. and wealth.

  435. This is completely false.

  436. The blessings we have,

  437. even if we work

  438. to acquire them,

  439. are all from God's hand.

  440. Have you ever wondered

  441. why you were born

  442. where you were born

  443. or how you came

  444. to have the talent you have

  445. or the intellect

  446. or the opportunities

  447. or the health

  448. or the money?

  449. Everything comes

  450. from the hand of God,

  451. even if we work hard.

  452. So your land

  453. is not yours.

  454. Your job

  455. is not yours.

  456. Your house

  457. is not yours.

  458. Your car

  459. is not yours.

  460. Your intellect

  461. is not yours.

  462. Your talents

  463. are not yours.

  464. Your health,

  465. even,

  466. is not ultimately yours.

  467. Ultimately,

  468. they are all gifts

  469. from God.

  470. So,

  471. we are right

  472. to ask ourselves,

  473. what do you have

  474. that you did not receive?

  475. And if then

  476. you received it,

  477. why do you boast

  478. as if you did not receive it?

  479. If we feel entitled

  480. to what we own,

  481. we will not be generous

  482. toward the poor.

  483. But if we are grateful

  484. for what we own

  485. because we recognize them

  486. properly as the gifts

  487. that they are,

  488. then we can be free

  489. to be generous.

  490. But it's not only

  491. the poor

  492. that God is looking after.

  493. Verse 11 adds,

  494. and what they leave,

  495. what the poor leave,

  496. the beasts

  497. of the field

  498. may eat.

  499. There is a clear

  500. priority here,

  501. lest we forget.

  502. The poor people

  503. get to eat

  504. from the field

  505. first,

  506. and only afterward,

  507. the beasts

  508. of the field

  509. are to be allowed

  510. to eat

  511. the leftover.

  512. People created

  513. in the image of God

  514. are more valuable

  515. than animals

  516. who are not created

  517. in the image of God.

  518. So,

  519. we should be

  520. more concerned

  521. about human welfare

  522. than animal welfare.

  523. But with that said,

  524. it is remarkable

  525. that in the law of God,

  526. God himself

  527. here is speaking,

  528. and God himself

  529. deigns to address

  530. the welfare

  531. of the wild beasts

  532. of the field.

  533. God cares even

  534. for the jackals

  535. of the field.

  536. The God who governs

  537. the hundreds

  538. of billions

  539. of galaxies

  540. in the universe

  541. and probably more

  542. ensures that even

  543. the wild beasts

  544. have something to eat.

  545. This highlights

  546. God's providential care

  547. and encourages

  548. a generous spirit

  549. of creation stewardship

  550. among us.

  551. I have three daughters,

  552. which means

  553. I watch

  554. many princess movies,

  555. which I enjoy

  556. more than I care

  557. to admit.

  558. And one of our

  559. household favorites

  560. is a live action

  561. version of Cinderella

  562. from 2015

  563. with Lily James.

  564. You guys might not

  565. have seen it

  566. because it's not

  567. actually on Disney Plus

  568. due to some

  569. copyright issues.

  570. And in the movie,

  571. Cinderella's stepmother

  572. and stepsisters

  573. are too miserly

  574. to share

  575. even their

  576. meager portions

  577. that are left over

  578. with Cinderella.

  579. But Cinderella,

  580. in contrast,

  581. is so open-handed

  582. and generous

  583. that she even

  584. shares her portion,

  585. which is

  586. the crumbs

  587. and the leftover

  588. from her stepmother

  589. and sisters,

  590. she shares that

  591. openly with even

  592. the mice

  593. in her own house.

  594. And Cinderella

  595. names and feeds

  596. those pests

  597. of the house,

  598. jack and goose,

  599. so that one of them

  600. gets fat.

  601. And Cinderella

  602. sharing food

  603. with the mice

  604. shows her,

  605. it's supposed to

  606. reveal her

  607. generous and

  608. selfless spirit

  609. in stark contrast

  610. to the stingy,

  611. shriveled heart

  612. of the stepmother.

  613. We are drawn

  614. to generous characters

  615. like that.

  616. Why?

  617. Because she

  618. resembles God

  619. who cares

  620. even

  621. for the jackals.

  622. And if God

  623. so cares

  624. for the wild beasts,

  625. will such an

  626. attentive,

  627. loving,

  628. generous God

  629. neglect us

  630. who are made

  631. in his own image?

  632. And that's why

  633. Jesus says

  634. in Matthew 6,

  635. 25 to 26,

  636. therefore I tell you,

  637. do not be anxious

  638. about your life,

  639. what you will eat

  640. or what you will drink

  641. or about your body,

  642. what you will put on.

  643. Is not life

  644. more than food

  645. and the body

  646. more than clothing?

  647. Look at the birds

  648. of the air.

  649. They do not sow

  650. or reap

  651. or stow away

  652. in barns

  653. and yet

  654. your heavenly

  655. Father

  656. feeds them.

  657. The God

  658. the Father

  659. is not the bird's

  660. father,

  661. but he is

  662. your father.

  663. Will he

  664. neglect

  665. you?

  666. God is no

  667. Scrooge.

  668. So see here

  669. in these verses,

  670. God's generous

  671. heart

  672. toward you

  673. and don't

  674. ever think

  675. of him

  676. as a begrudging

  677. or stingy

  678. God.

  679. This leads us

  680. to the principle

  681. of the Sabbath

  682. day in verse 12.

  683. Again,

  684. it begins

  685. with the number

  686. six,

  687. six days.

  688. You shall

  689. do your work,

  690. but on the seventh

  691. day you shall

  692. rest,

  693. that your ox

  694. and your donkey

  695. may have rest,

  696. and the son

  697. of your servant

  698. woman and the alien

  699. may be refreshed.

  700. This is again

  701. an elaboration

  702. of the fourth

  703. commandment.

  704. Remember the

  705. Sabbath day,

  706. keep it holy,

  707. working for six

  708. days and ceasing

  709. from work on

  710. the seventh

  711. day.

  712. There when God

  713. gave the fourth

  714. commandment in

  715. Exodus 20,

  716. he gave this

  717. specific rationale

  718. which is in the

  719. background here.

  720. For in six

  721. days the Lord

  722. made heaven and

  723. earth,

  724. the sea and all

  725. that is in them,

  726. and rested on

  727. the seventh day.

  728. Therefore the Lord

  729. blessed the

  730. Sabbath day and

  731. made it holy.

  732. So God

  733. himself,

  734. we need to

  735. remember,

  736. needs no rest.

  737. God didn't rest

  738. because he was

  739. tired.

  740. We know this

  741. because Isaiah

  742. 40, 28 tells us

  743. that God neither

  744. faints nor is

  745. weary.

  746. He never gets

  747. weary.

  748. He never faints.

  749. He never tires.

  750. And Jesus

  751. confirms this in

  752. John 5, 17 when

  753. he tells the

  754. Pharisees who are

  755. criticizing him for

  756. healing on the

  757. Sabbath that my

  758. father is working

  759. even this day.

  760. God the Father

  761. works on the

  762. Sabbath.

  763. He doesn't take

  764. days off.

  765. However,

  766. for our benefit,

  767. because we as

  768. human beings,

  769. finite creatures,

  770. need rest,

  771. God the Father

  772. rested on the

  773. seventh day of

  774. his creation.

  775. The Sabbath is a

  776. reminder that we

  777. are not all

  778. powerful, that we

  779. are not indefatigable

  780. or indispensable

  781. like we think we

  782. are.

  783. When even God

  784. rested on the

  785. seventh day from

  786. his work of

  787. creation, do we

  788. really have the

  789. audacity to say

  790. that our work is

  791. so important, that

  792. I am so important

  793. that I can't afford

  794. to take a day of

  795. rest?

  796. The world will not

  797. stop spinning because

  798. we stopped working.

  799. This rationale for

  800. the fourth

  801. commandment is in

  802. the background here,

  803. but a different

  804. reason is in the

  805. foreground in this

  806. verse.

  807. Why must Israelites

  808. rest and not

  809. work on the

  810. seventh day, that

  811. your ox and your

  812. donkey may have

  813. rest, and the

  814. son of your

  815. servant woman and

  816. the alien may be

  817. refreshed.

  818. So here the

  819. concern that is

  820. emphasized is love

  821. of neighbor.

  822. Not only do we

  823. need rest, the

  824. people who work

  825. for us need rest.

  826. The son of your

  827. servant woman, the

  828. alien, they need

  829. refreshment.

  830. This is necessary

  831. because if we're

  832. working, then other

  833. people who are under

  834. our charge and care

  835. have to work as

  836. well, imagine

  837. having a manager, I

  838. think some of you

  839. guys have this,

  840. imagine having a

  841. manager who never

  842. stops working.

  843. You're on vacation,

  844. ping, hey, have you

  845. done this?

  846. Weekends, evenings,

  847. early mornings, all

  848. hours of the night, you

  849. get emails, pings on

  850. your Slack, work Slack,

  851. have you done this?

  852. You would never be

  853. able to rest because

  854. your boss hasn't

  855. stopped working.

  856. You'll be constantly

  857. stressed that you're

  858. not doing enough work,

  859. that you need to be

  860. doing more and more

  861. work.

  862. It's for this reason

  863. that we need to think

  864. of people who are

  865. under our care and

  866. under our charge and

  867. rest for their sake

  868. also so that they may

  869. be refreshed.

  870. And once again, God

  871. demonstrates his care

  872. even for the animals.

  873. He says that we should

  874. rest so that your ox and

  875. your donkey may have

  876. rest.

  877. Even farm animals, just

  878. beasts, they need

  879. rest.

  880. And if God is concerned

  881. about making sure that

  882. the livestock get

  883. necessary rest, how

  884. much more do you think

  885. God cares about your

  886. rest, about your

  887. well-being, about your

  888. refreshment?

  889. The Sabbath was so

  890. important for the

  891. Israelites that later in

  892. Exodus 34, they're

  893. specifically commanded not

  894. to work even in the

  895. busiest months of the

  896. agricultural calendar,

  897. during the plowing time,

  898. in the harvest time.

  899. The most time-sensitive

  900. periods in an

  901. agricultural society,

  902. that's when the ox and

  903. donkeys are the busiest

  904. working.

  905. But even then, you must

  906. cease working on the

  907. seventh day and rest.

  908. Even then, you must let

  909. your animals rest on the

  910. seventh day.

  911. That's the seventh year

  912. and the seventh day.

  913. After addressing those

  914. two things, verses 14 to

  915. 19 turn their attention

  916. to the three feasts that

  917. they are to celebrate

  918. throughout the year.

  919. And verses 14 to 16 are

  920. paralleled by verses 17 to

  921. 19.

  922. This is important, and I'm

  923. going to bring it up again

  924. later.

  925. Both paragraphs begin with

  926. the word three.

  927. Three times in the year you

  928. shall keep a feast to me.

  929. Three times in the year

  930. shall all your males appear

  931. before the Lord God.

  932. Women and children can

  933. come, but the males were

  934. required to be there.

  935. Presumably, their wives

  936. are holding down the fort

  937. home while they represent

  938. their households in the

  939. temple or before the

  940. presence of God.

  941. And so this parallel

  942. structure between the two

  943. sections, verses 14 to 16

  944. and 17 to 19, suggests

  945. that the three sentences

  946. in verses 18 to 19

  947. actually correspond to

  948. the three feasts mentioned

  949. in verses 15 to 17.

  950. So first is the feast of

  951. unleavened bread.

  952. It says in verse 15,

  953. As I commanded you, you

  954. shall eat unleavened bread

  955. for seven days at the

  956. appointed time in the month

  957. of Abib.

  958. For in it you came out of

  959. Egypt.

  960. None shall appear before me

  961. empty-handed.

  962. In Exodus 12, God already

  963. gave detailed instructions and

  964. rationale for this feast.

  965. The seven day of the feast

  966. of unleavened bread immediately

  967. followed the celebration of

  968. the Passover.

  969. The Passover day when God

  970. struck down the firstborn

  971. sons of Egypt as retribution

  972. for not letting the firstborn

  973. son of God, Israel, go.

  974. And so because of that,

  975. Egyptians let the Israelites

  976. go in a hurry, fearing for

  977. their lives.

  978. And so the Passover was when

  979. the Israelites sacrificed an

  980. unblemished lamb as kind of an

  981. atoning sacrifice.

  982. And they daubed the blood of

  983. the lamb on their doors and

  984. the angel of death when he

  985. came through to destroy the

  986. firstborns, firstborn males of

  987. Egypt, spared the Israelites

  988. because they saw the blood of

  989. the lamb.

  990. That was the Passover day and

  991. the Israelites celebrated that

  992. annually by slaughtering a lamb

  993. and eating it.

  994. And the seventh day, seventh day

  995. unleavened bread, the feast of

  996. unleavened bread immediately

  997. followed the Passover and

  998. sometimes they're combined and

  999. they're called together called

1000. the feast of the Passover or the

1001. feast of the unleavened bread.

1002. And this was the rationale for

1003. the feast of unleavened bread in

  1004. Exodus 12, 33 to 34.

1005. It says because the Egyptians

1006. ushered the Israelites out of

1007. Egypt in haste and they left in

1008. such a hurry that they had no

1009. time to leaven their bread.

1010. They had no time to leaven the

1011. bread and let the dough rise.

1012. And so that's why they had to eat

1013. unleavened bread when they were

  1014. exiting Egypt.

1015. And so to commemorate that, they

1016. are now to for seven days eat

  1017. only unleavened bread.

1018. They came out of Egypt in the

1019. month of Abiv, which is now the

1020. has reset the Jewish calendar.

1021. That's when the Jewish calendar

  1022. begins after the Exodus.

1023. And that's when they are to

  1024. celebrate the Passover.

1025. It's the Jewish equivalent of

1026. Independence Day where they were

1027. freed from the yoke of the

  1028. Egyptian tyranny.

1029. And the command none shall appear

1030. before me empty handed is a

1031. reference to the sacrifice that

1032. participants in the feast were to

  1033. offer to God.

1034. In fact, this command applies to

1035. all three of the feasts because

  1036. according to more detailed

  1037. instructions found elsewhere in

  1038. Leviticus 23, Numbers 20, 29,

1039. Deuteronomy 16, each of these

1040. three feasts require the offering up

  1041. of sacrifice.

1042. And each of these three feasts

  1043. specifically require the sacrifice

1044. of a year old male lamb without

  1045. blemish.

  1046. Just like the Passover.

  1047. As I mentioned earlier, verses 14

1048. to 16 are paralleled by verses 17

1049. to 19 and both paragraphs begin

  1050. with the word three.

1051. And the three specific instructions

1052. given in 18 to 19 correspond to the

1053. three feasts outlined in verses 15

  1054. to 17.

1055. So verse 18 then corresponds directly

1056. to the feast of unleavened bread.

1057. And you can see that it's

1058. confirmed by what it says because

1059. it says offering anything unleavened

1060. with the sacrifice is prohibited.

1061. It says you shall not offer the

1062. blood of my sacrifice with anything

1063. leavened or let the fat of my feast

  1064. remain until the morning.

1065. Not letting the leftovers of the

1066. lamb remain until the morning is

1067. also parallel to the instruction that

1068. God gave to the Israelites about

1069. the feast of unleavened bread in

  1070. Exodus 12.

1071. They were supposed to burn up any

1072. leftover instead of letting it

1073. remain to maybe rot until the next

1074. day to spoil and it has to be thrown

1075. out or maybe they eat leftovers

  1076. the following day.

1077. If they did that, it would cheapen

  1078. the sacrificial meal.

1079. It would make it seem common and

  1080. ordinary.

1081. And so burning the leftovers kind of

1082. blazoned in their mind the reality

1083. that this is a holy meal.

1084. This is a sacrificial meal and is

1085. offered to God and shared in his

  1086. presence.

1087. So no leaven is allowed and no

  1088. leftovers are allowed.

1089. The second of the three major

  1090. pilgrimage feasts that the

1091. Israelites are to celebrate is the

1092. feast of harvest or the feast of

1093. first fruits of your labor of what

1094. you sow in the field as it says in

  1095. verse 16.

1096. This feast came at the beginning of

1097. the harvest season and according to

1098. more detailed instructions in the

1099. chapters I mentioned earlier, this

  1100. feast was inaugurated.

1101. It started when the sickle is first

1102. put to the standing grain.

1103. So the very first crop of the

1104. harvest that you get is the first

  1105. fruits.

1106. That's when you begin the feast.

1107. And you are supposed to bring those

1108. first fruits to God as an offering

1109. and you are supposed to wave it

  1110. before him.

1111. And you brought the first, I mean

1112. that would have been tempting for

1113. them as well because if you are like

1114. me and you like to plan for the

1115. future, you like to have emergency

1116. supplies and savings, well you don't

1117. know what's going to happen to the

  1118. rest of your field.

1119. What if there's hail, locusts, and the

1120. rest of your produce get destroyed?

1121. Well here you have the first fruits,

1122. maybe if I store this up at least I'll

1123. have some in case some disaster

1124. happens for the rest of the year.

1125. It would have been tempting to have

1126. that mindset but not according to this

  1127. first.

1128. It says God commands us to offer the

1129. first fruits, the feast of first fruits,

1130. the first fruits of our ground we are to

1131. bring to God as an offering.

1132. So after the first fruits are waved,

1133. you're supposed to count down seven

  1134. weeks.

1135. And after the seven weeks, so 49 days,

1136. on the 50th day, they were to offer

  1137. more sacrifices.

1138. That's why sometimes this feast is

1139. instead called the feast of weeks.

1140. Or it's also called Pentecost, which is

1141. the way it's referred to in the New

1142. Testament because it comes from the

  1143. Greek word for 50.

1144. On the 50th day, they celebrate.

1145. So the feast of first fruits, the feast

1146. of weeks, feast of harvest, Pentecost is

1147. all referring to the same feast.

1148. Now by bringing the first fruits offerings,

1149. they're giving it as a pledge of trust

  1150. to God.

1151. And the first fruits offering is also to

1152. be from the best of the first fruits,

  1153. it says.

1154. Not the worst of your first fruits.

1155. It's supposed to be the cream of your

1156. crop, not the crumbs of your crop.

1157. As I've been saying throughout our series

1158. in the book of Exodus, these laws are not

1159. legally binding on Christian as laws because

1160. they are stipulations of the old covenant.

1161. And we are under the new covenant, under

  1162. the law of Christ.

1163. For this reason, everything in the Old

1164. Testament, including these verses, have

1165. to be interpreted through and applied

1166. through the lens of Jesus who has fulfilled

1167. the whole law, fulfilled all of the

1168. scriptures and have brought it to its

  1169. intended purpose and goal.

1170. With that said, this is still the inspired

  1171. word of God.

1172. And it teaches us about God's character.

1173. And it gives us ideas about how we might

  1174. honor God.

1175. So do you have a desire to honor God in this

  1176. way?

1177. To bring him the first fruits and not the

  1178. leftovers?

1179. My mom instilled this in me and my sister when

1180. we were growing up from an early age.

1181. Whenever we started a new job, she encouraged us

1182. to give the entire first paycheck as an offering

1183. to God in the church as a first fruits offering.

1184. And she encouraged us to give the first 10% of

1185. your income at the beginning of the year.

1186. Not beginning of the month, the first 10% to

1187. God instead of giving the leftovers.

1188. And before taxes, before the government takes its

  1189. portion.

1190. And this is what Hannah and I have done throughout

  1191. our entire marriage.

1192. And I say this not to boast but to set an example

1193. and to show you what this in some limited way looks

  1194. like.

1195. And we do this not because we have to, but because

  1196. we get to.

1197. Because we want some way to express to God that you

1198. are first in my life.

1199. Because we want some way to be able to acknowledge

1200. and say to God that everything I have comes from you.

1201. You're the giver of every good gift.

1202. It brings me so much joy and pleasure to be able to give

  1203. it to God.

1204. And God has blessed us abundantly and we have never

  1205. known any lack.

1206. Do you want to give the first place in your life to God?

1207. Do you want to give the best of your life to God?

1208. I've heard some people say after, you know, after I've had

1209. a career, have made some money and maybe raised a family.

1210. Well, then after that, I will serve the Lord in ministry.

1211. Or after that, I will consider going into the mission field.

1212. But why wait until you're old?

1213. You might not even live that long.

1214. Why not give the prime of your life, the best of your youth

  1215. to God?

1216. And then trust God to take care of the rest.

1217. The third and final major feast the Israelites were to

1218. celebrate was a feast of ingathering at the end of the year,

1219. most likely the end of the agricultural year because it

1220. comes at the end of the harvest around September, October.

1221. This feast is more commonly called the feast of tabernacles

1222. or the feast of booths because during the harvest,

1223. Israelites set up booths, tabernacles, tents in the field

1224. for the farmers, the harvesters to take shelter in.

1225. So this would be the modern equivalent of our Thanksgiving

1226. or other similar harvest festivals throughout the world.

1227. And following the pattern we have observed so far,

1228. verse 18 gives specific instructions for the feast of unleavened bread.

1229. And verse 19a, giving specific instructions for the feast of weeks,

1230. that leads us to conclude following the pattern that verse 19b

1231. is most likely specifically connected to the feast of booths.

1232. That's the third feast and that's the third specific instruction

1233. given in the parallel section.

1234. But the connection is not immediately apparent

1235. because the instruction is quite curious.

  1236. It says,

1237. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk.

  1238. Right?

1239. I'm pretty sure some of you guys, when I read that,

1240. are just like, what in the world is that?

1241. And, well, unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you

1242. that is sure, you know, that is perfectly,

1243. I mean, I'm not sure that this is right.

  1244. I think it's plausible.

1245. In the 12th century AD, Jewish philosopher Maimonides,

1246. many scholars follow his line of reasoning that

1247. Maimonides argued that forbidding the Israelites

1248. from boiling a young goat, a goat kid, in its mother's milk

1249. had to do with ancient Near Eastern pagan rituals,

1250. fertility rituals, which involved boiling a goat in its mother's milk.

1251. And there's a chance that a ritual similar to that

1252. is described in an ancient Ugaritic text.

1253. The text is fragmented, so it's not perfectly clear

1254. that that's what it's referring to, but it's possible

1255. that some pagan rituals involved boiling a young goat in its mother's milk.

1256. And it's plausible that that's some kind of fertility ritual

1257. because life, you know, milk represents life

1258. and a young goat also represents fertility.

1259. This is possible but impossible to prove.

1260. Another possible reason is that there's just something perverse

1261. about boiling a young goat in its own mother's milk.

1262. The young goat is supposed to be fed and nourished by the mother's milk,

  1263. not cooked in it.

1264. Plus, it seems so greedy to consume both the mother's goat

1265. and the kid and the mother's milk in one dish.

1266. So this may be yet another command in this passage

1267. where God is enjoining the responsible stewardship of creation,

1268. being merciful even to the animals.

1269. The way this section of the book of the covenant

1270. is structured in parallel format, as I've been mentioning,

1271. six years, six days, three feasts, three feasts,

1272. they bring the focus intentionally to verse 13,

1273. which is the centerpiece, the crux of this passage.

1274. And this is the main takeaway really of the passage.

1275. And it says in verse 13,

1276. pay attention to all that I have said to you

1277. and make no mention of the names of other gods,

1278. nor let it be heard on your lips.

1279. Not only are the Israelites to not worship other gods,

1280. they are not even to mention their name on their lips.

1281. Their name should not even be heard on the lips of the Israelites.

1282. And that's really the purpose of the Sabbath year

1283. and the Sabbath day and the feasts of unleavened bread

  1284. and weeks and booths.

1285. They are designed to remind them of God's faithful provision for them

1286. and reaffirm their exclusive allegiance to him.

  1287. Remember that.

1288. This is what God says.

1289. Remember that at this point of the Exodus,

1290. the Israelites are not yet in the promised land.

1291. And yet, almost all of the instructions here in this passage

1292. pertain to when the Israelites come into possession of the promised land.

1293. Right now, they don't own any land that they can leave fallow on the seventh year.

1294. Right now, they don't have any harvest to give thanks to God for.

1295. But God gives these instructions in anticipation of the fact

1296. that he will fulfill his promises

1297. as if they have already been fulfilled.

1298. Because when God promises something,

1299. it is as good as done.

1300. God is saying to the Israelites,

1301. remember how I provided manna for you daily in the wilderness

1302. and a double portion for you on the sixth day

1303. so that you can rest and still have food to eat on the seventh day.

  1304. Remember that.

  1305. Remember that.

1306. And when you come to possess Canaan,

1307. let the land lie fallow.

1308. Give it rest and trust in my provision for you.

1309. Remember how I struck down Egypt with a mighty arm at the Passover day

1310. and how you were ushered out so quickly from Egypt

1311. that you had to eat unleavened bread.

  1312. Well, remember that.

1313. And when you come into possession of the land of Canaan,

  1314. celebrate these feasts.

1315. Eat unleavened bread for seven days

1316. so you will not forget that it was Yahweh

1317. who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

1318. And it is Yahweh who provided this land for you.

1319. And it is Yahweh who provided the harvest for you.

  1320. Not Baal, not Asherah,

1321. or any of the other idols of the surrounding nations.

1322. That's the point of these feasts.

1323. Pay attention to all that I have said to you.

  1324. Note the contrast here.

1325. Pay attention to all that I have said to you

1326. and make no mention at all of the other gods.

1327. God demands absolute exclusive allegiance

1328. because he deserves nothing less

1329. and will not countenance anything less than that.

1330. Who or what are the idols in your life

1331. that you look to as your redeemer and provider?

1332. In theory, you might say that God is your deliverer.

1333. God is your savior and redeemer.

1334. But functionally, do you relate to God that way?

1335. Or are you finding your identity in something else

  1336. or someone else?

1337. Do you live in fear like you need to save

1338. and deliver yourself from your slavery, sin, and death?

1339. In theory, you might say that God is your provider.

1340. But functionally, do you relate to God that way?

1341. Do you really rest in his provision?

1342. Or are you always wrecked with anxiety

1343. because you feel that you are your own provider?

1344. Or maybe you're in a codependent relationship

1345. and look to your partner as your ultimate provider

  1346. rather than God.

1347. Jesus has fulfilled all of these holy days

1348. and years and feasts for us.

1349. And that's why Paul writes in Colossians 2.16,

1350. Therefore, let no one pass judgment on you

1351. in questions of food and drink

1352. or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.

1353. We no longer need to observe these feasts and Sabbaths

1354. because these feasts were intended to point forward

1355. to the coming of Jesus.

1356. And Jesus has already come

1357. and he has already fulfilled these feasts.

1358. He has already fulfilled the whole law.

  1359. That's why in 1 Corinthians 5.68,

1360. Paul references the feast of unleavened bread

  1361. and the Passover

1362. when he tells the Corinthians

1363. to purge their church of sexual immorality.

  1364. He says this,

1365. Do you not know that a little leaven

  1366. leavens a whole lump?

1367. Cleanse out the old leaven

1368. that you may be a new lump

1369. as you really are unleavened.

1370. For Christ, our Passover lamb,

  1371. has been sacrificed.

1372. Let us therefore celebrate the festival

1373. not with the old leaven,

1374. the leaven of malice and evil,

1375. but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

1376. Because Jesus, the unblemished Passover lamb of God,

1377. has been sacrificed on the cross

1378. for our sins, for our forgiveness.

  1379. And because of that,

1380. we have been redeemed from our slavery to sin and death.

1381. We ought to celebrate the feast of unleavened bread,

1382. not with the literal feast,

1383. but by removing the leaven of malice and evil from our lives

1384. and replacing them with the unleavened bread

  1385. of sincerity and truth.

1386. Because Jesus rose from the dead

1387. and ascended to the right hand of the Father

1388. far above the heavenly places,

1389. and because Jesus, after ascending,

1390. sent down the Holy Spirit

1391. that he had promised to us

1392. at, do you guys remember what feast?

1393. The feast of weeks, feast of first fruits.

1394. That's why Romans 8.23 describes those who believe in Jesus Christ

1395. as those who have the first fruits of the Spirit.

1396. We have the first fruits of the Spirit.

1397. The Spirit of God indwelling us

1398. is the guarantee of the full harvest that is coming,

1399. of the full inheritance that God has promised us

1400. that we will inherit and receive.

1401. That's why it says in that same verse,

  1402. in Romans 8.23,

1403. we who have the first fruits of the Holy Spirit

1404. groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons,

1405. the redemption of our bodies.

1406. Are you groaning right now?

1407. Are you grieving right now

1408. because of your suffering and affliction?

1409. Do you have unanswered questions in your life

1410. because you're living in this time

  1411. between Jesus' two comings?

  1412. You can have hope

1413. because you have the first fruits of the Spirit.

1414. All the answers are coming.

1415. The full harvest is coming

1416. because you already have the first fruits.

1417. And Jesus also fulfilled the Feast of Tabernacles.

  1418. It is no coincidence

1419. that Solomon built his temple

1420. and dedicated it during the Feast of Boots

1421. or the Feast of Tabernacles

  1422. in 1 Kings 8.65.

1423. The Feast of Boots came to be connected

  1424. to Israel's wilderness wanderings

1425. because while they were wandering the wilderness,

1426. they built boots and tents for themselves

1427. and they built the tabernacle,

  1428. the tent of God.

  1429. And so Solomon,

1430. when he is dedicating the newly built temple,

1431. he is very intentionally superseding

  1432. the tabernacle of old.

1433. This is the dwelling place of God.

1434. And in the new covenant

  1435. that Jesus brought about,

  1436. it says in 1 Corinthians 3.16

  1437. that we, God's people,

  1438. are God's temple

1439. and the Spirit dwells in us.

  1440. And according to 1 Peter 2,

1441. God is currently building us up

  1442. as a spiritual house,

1443. as the house of the Spirit

1444. with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone.

1445. Jesus is the one who fulfilled

  1446. all of these feasts,

  1447. all of these laws.

1448. And he is the rightful object

  1449. of our exclusive allegiance

  1450. and attention

1451. as told here in verse 13,

1452. pay attention to all that I have said to you

1453. and make no mention of the names of other gods

1454. nor let it be heard on your lips.

  1455. So let's remember

1456. God's faithful provision in the past

1457. so that we can live with faith

1458. and hope in the fulfillment

1459. of his promises for the future.

  1460. Let's pray together.

  1461. Father,

  1462. yes, Father,

1463. thank you for sending your son,

  1464. your only son, Jesus.

  1465. It's because of him

  1466. that we know

  1467. the cleansing,

  1468. the atoning blood

  1469. of the Passover lamb

1470. and we have been washed clean.

  1471. It's because of him

  1472. that we have

1473. the first fruits of the Spirit.

  1474. And we know

1475. that that day is coming

  1476. when our faith

1477. will be turned to sight,

  1478. when our prayers

1479. will be turned to praise,

1480. when what is not yet

  1481. will be reality.

1482. Thank you for gathering us

  1483. and building us up

1484. as a house for your Spirit.

  1485. Oh God,

  1486. all of these privileges

1487. we enjoy because of Jesus

  1488. and we love him.

1489. We want to honor him.

1490. We want to give him our very best.

1491. We want to show him

1492. that he is our first,

1493. our only Lord and Savior.

1494. So help us to do that, Father.

1495. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1496. Amen.
