  1. and and uh

  2. you know I think of the thought of the

  3. fellowship of the gospel.

  4. You know, people are like mind, like

  5. precious faith,

  6. people that uh love and support

  7. missions,

  8. people that love the word of God.

  9. And I think that this is becoming more

  10. and more rare these days,

  11. be able to come into a place and and

  12. teach the word. And uh it's like I say,

  13. it's it's it's a great privilege. Uh

  14. Pastor Hixon and Gail and I, we go way

  15. back uh talking about clear back into

  16. the 70s. I moved to Chilikothy in 1977.

  17. I think that was the first time I met

  18. Pastor Hixon.

  19. I used to come to Athens every other

  20. month uh for prayer meeting on Sundays.

  21. Used to meet over at Morris Road in uh

  22. house where I think well I know Robert

  23. Powell lived there uh Bob Merrill and

  24. some of the others and had a lot of good

  25. memories and it's so good to be able to

  26. see people that are continuing on in the

  27. things of the Lord.

  28. Well,

  29. this morning we're going to be turning

  30. to a book in the Bible that I think a

  31. lot of times we have a tendency of

  32. overlooking.

  33. It's a book that's found among a group

  34. of books that's referred to as the the

  35. minor prophets. Now, I don't know who in

  36. the world ever came up with that name,

  37. minor prophets. I think maybe because

  38. many of those books are very small books

  39. and uh but I'll tell you the they're not

  40. minor because the the message that they

  41. bring is is definitely not minor.

  42. They're very important messages.

  43. Uh what we're going to be doing please

  44. turn with me to the book of Habac. Book

  45. of Habac.

  46. uh when I have the opportunity to come

  47. to uh Athens to uh trade pulpits uh I

  48. would like to bring a series of messages

  49. from this book. I'm not saying that

  50. we're going to cover the whole book

  51. verse by verse. We might just be taking

  52. snapshots from it, but it's a book that

  53. I've grown to love over the years.

  54. Uh it's not a large book. It consists

  55. only of three chapters

  56. and yet it's it's a book of great

  57. significance.

  58. In the book of Habac, we actually find a

  59. verse that we could say that changed the

  60. course of Christian history.

  61. It's a verse that even the Apostle Paul

  62. quoted twice. Once in the book of Romans

  63. and again he refers to it in the book of

  64. Galatians

  65. and that verse being the book of Habac

  66. in chapter 2 and in verse 4. Habac

  67. chapter 2 and verse four

  68. he says see he is puffed up his desires

  69. are not upright

  70. but the righteous will live by his

  71. faith.

  72. And another way that uh you hear it many

  73. times is that the just shall live by

  74. faith.

  75. In the book of Romans, we find that Paul

  76. uses this verse in order to prove that

  77. salvation comes through faith and faith

  78. alone.

  79. If we were to look over in the book of

  80. Galatians, we find that Paul uses this

  81. verse again in order to prove that the

  82. Christian life is a life that is lived

  83. by faith and faith alone. The just shall

  84. live by faith.

  85. But if we were to look at church

  86. history, we also find that it was this

  87. verse that God used as a turning point

  88. in the life of Martin Luther.

  89. Martin Luther was raised Catholic. He

  90. was actually a Catholic monk

  91. and and he was he was constantly trying

  92. to work his way into heaven.

  93. And the harder he tried to work his way

  94. into heaven, the more he realized that

  95. he was coming short. There was no way

  96. that he was going to heaven based upon

  97. his own works. So then he comes across

  98. this verse, the just shall live by

  99. faith. And as a result of that verse, he

  100. realized that salvation was by grace

  101. through faith and faith alone. And that

  102. right there was the spark that ignited

  103. the reformation.

  104. So God actually used that verse from the

  105. book of Habach of all places. the little

  106. book of Habaca in order to change the

  107. course of Christian history.

  108. This is a theme verse of the book of

  109. Habac.

  110. And what we're going to do this morning

  111. is we're going to look at the

  112. circumstances that brought that message

  113. from God to Habac.

  114. So what we're going to do is we're going

  115. to look at Habac today in chapter 1 and

  116. we're going to look at verses 1-4.

  117. Book of Habach chapter 1 and verses 1-

  118. 4.

  119. In verse one he says the burden which

  120. Habach the prophet deceive.

  121. Oh Lord, how long shall I cry and thou

  122. will not hear?

  123. even cry out unto thee of violence, and

  124. thou will not save.

  125. Why do thou show me iniquity, and cause

  126. me to behold grievance?

  127. For spoiling violence are before me, and

  128. there are that rise up strife and

  129. contention.

  130. Therefore, the law is slacked, and jud

  131. judgment doth never go forth. For the

  132. wicked doth compass about the righteous,

  133. therefore wrong judgment proceedth.

  134. And something I'd like to do this

  135. morning is I'd like to try to put

  136. ourselves into Habac's shoes

  137. and ask ourselves,

  138. is these verses that we see in verses

  139. 1-4, is this something that we can

  140. relate to today?

  141. And you know just a summarization you

  142. know I can say that you know these these

  143. verses is basically this is Habach's

  144. complaints okay Habach's complaint who's

  145. he complaining to he's complaining to

  146. God one of the things I really

  147. appreciate the Bible is how honest the

  148. Bible is

  149. and and in and the honesty of the Bible

  150. it it it shows us that these people that

  151. wrote the scriptures they were not

  152. Perfect. These were people that had

  153. struggles in their lives just like we

  154. have struggles today. So Habacha is

  155. somebody that we are able to relate to.

  156. You know the particular details may be

  157. different but I think that we could all

  158. understand what he is saying because to

  159. some extent we have thought and asked

  160. the same kind of things.

  161. Well, you notice he talks about a

  162. burden. A burden. This is the burden of

  163. Habac.

  164. What is the burden that Habach speaks

  165. of?

  166. You know, another word that we could use

  167. to translate the word burden is the word

  168. oracle.

  169. And this basically it means the

  170. pronouncement of something that carries

  171. with it a heavy weight.

  172. Usually whenever we see the word oracle

  173. describing a message from God in the Old

  174. Testament, it is a message of divine

  175. judgment.

  176. Have you ever had a message to give

  177. somebody that was very difficult because

  178. you knew that it was a message that was

  179. hard to hear?

  180. You know, I heard a burden just this

  181. morning.

  182. And the burden was is that somebody that

  183. was a part of this congregation

  184. had suddenly passed away.

  185. That is not the kind of message that you

  186. like to give. And it's not the kind of

  187. message that you like to receive. It's a

  188. it's a burden. It's a burden. It's a

  189. burden for the one that gives it because

  190. they would rather not give it. And it's

  191. a burden to the one that receives it

  192. because it's something that they would

  193. rather not hear. It's a it's a it's a

  194. burden to that person.

  195. We don't like to hear bad news. We don't

  196. like to be the bearer of bad news.

  197. But the thing we need to understand

  198. though is that sometimes bad news is

  199. necessary.

  200. There are times when bad news is

  201. necessary.

  202. You know, it was about five years ago.

  203. It was five five years ago in March

  204. that I received a telephone call

  205. and the telephone call was uh basically

  206. that uh you have cancer and I went in

  207. for a biopsy and waiting for the results

  208. of the biopsy. Get the phone call and

  209. and found out that I had cancer.

  210. believe you know what you know nothing

  211. that's well I I won't minimalize it but

  212. it was prostate cancer you know

  213. something treatable and and so but the

  214. thing is is that was not the message

  215. that I wanted to hear

  216. that that was a burden it was a burden

  217. of the one that gave it to me a burden

  218. for me to hear it but you know something

  219. the message I received was a message

  220. that was very necessary because whenever

  221. I learned that I had cancer you know

  222. what that meant that meant that I needed

  223. to do something about it

  224. because if I, you know, I went, that

  225. cancer was was growing for years. It

  226. was, it was kind of advanced when I

  227. found it. I didn't know I had it, but I

  228. needed to know that because now that I

  229. knew it, okay, now what do I need to do

  230. to treat it?

  231. You know, I I think of the message that

  232. God gave to Nineveh through Jonah the

  233. prophet.

  234. Was that the kind of message that you

  235. want to hear? That in 40 days that

  236. you're going to be judged and that

  237. you're going to be destroyed in 40 days?

  238. That's not the message that we want to

  239. hear. But it was a message that was

  240. necessary for the Ninevites because

  241. it was through that message that Nineveh

  242. repented and they turned to the Lord.

  243. They were able to do something about it.

  244. So the oracles of God, the burdens from

  245. God, we need the oracles, the burdens

  246. from God because they bring to light

  247. areas in our lives that need to be

  248. changed.

  249. They're good. They're good. It's

  250. something that we need. It's something

  251. very necessary.

  252. So, whenever we look at the book of

  253. Habac, we find that this is an oracle

  254. that came from God. It was the message

  255. that Habaca had received from the Lord

  256. and he was passing on to his people.

  257. I'd like to I'd like to say something

  258. real quick here about this. This is a

  259. very important truth. Our

  260. responsibility is not to come up with

  261. our own message.

  262. Our responsibility is to pass on the

  263. message that we have received from God

  264. even if that message may be unpleasant.

  265. And this is why verse byvere teaching is

  266. so important. And that's one of the

  267. things I really appreciate about Athens

  268. Bible Church, verse byvere teaching.

  269. because that way you're you're covering

  270. the whole context and you're seeing what

  271. God has to say.

  272. Let's take a look over in the book of

  273. Galatians in chapter 1 and let's take a

  274. look in verse 11. And this is something

  275. that

  276. Paul talks about whenever he talks about

  277. the gospel.

  278. You know, did you know that we could

  279. also say that the gospel is a burden?

  280. That the gospel is an oracle.

  281. And the reason why it's an oracle or a

  282. burden is because the the gospel carries

  283. with it not only the promise of life,

  284. but also there's the warning about

  285. divine judgment to those that reject the

  286. gospel. You know, we think of the simple

  287. verse John 3:16 that for God so loved

    John 3:16

  288. the world that he gave his only begotten

  289. son that whosoever believeth in him

  290. shall have everlasting life. Does that

  291. is that is that what what John 3:16

    John 3:16

  292. says? You notice I left something out.

  293. He says that whosoever believeth in him

  294. shall not perish but have everlasting

  295. life. So there there's a part of the

  296. gospel that is a burden because people

  297. are dead in sins and people they need

  298. the gospel. They need to accept Jesus

  299. Christ because if they don't accept

  300. Jesus Christ they're going to die in

  301. their sins. So there's a burden to the

  302. gospel. It's an oracle from God.

  303. Then Galatians 1 and verse 11, he says,

  304. "But I certify

  305. you, brethren, that the gospel which was

  306. preached of me was not after man."

  307. Says, "For I neither receive it of men,

  308. neither was I taught it, but by the

  309. revelation of Jesus Christ."

  310. You the Bible is inspired by God.

  311. The people that wrote the Bible received

  312. revelation directly from God. And we

  313. receive revelation today directly from

  314. the scriptures. And that is the message

  315. that we need to pass on. The message of

  316. God as recorded in the scriptures.

  317. And so let's look back in the book of

  318. Habac. Back in the book of Habac. Let's

  319. take a look in chapter 1. And I'd like

  320. to look in verse uh in verse two.

  321. Habach chapter 1 and verse two.

  322. Habach begins this book with a

  323. complaint.

  324. And this complaint can be divided up

  325. into three parts. Okay? A complaint made

  326. up of three parts.

  327. Okay? First of all, he's complaining to

  328. God about things that he himself is

  329. doing. Okay? These are the things that

  330. he These are the things that Habach is

  331. doing. Notice in verse two, he says, "Oh

  332. Lord, how long will I cry?" Okay, so you

  333. know what is he doing? He's crying out

  334. to God. Another you another way we could

  335. put it, he's praying. Okay, he's

  336. praying, "God, I'm praying to you."

  337. And then he goes on, he says, "Even cry

  338. out unto thee of violence."

  339. Says, "That thou will not save." Here's

  340. another in verse three. And why do you

  341. show me iniquity

  342. and cause me to behold grievance?

  343. So again, what is it that Habach says

  344. that he's doing? He's saying that I am

  345. crying out to the God, crying out to the

  346. Lord. And another thing he says he's

  347. doing is I look around and I behold

  348. injustice.

  349. Okay, this is what I'm doing. I cry out

  350. to God. I look around and I see

  351. injustice.

  352. Okay? I see all these things that are

  353. wrong.

  354. Okay? Then he complains about what he

  355. perceives God is doing. And not notice

  356. what he says. He says, "You will not

  357. hear." He's complaining that, "Okay, I'm

  358. crying out, but God's not listening to

  359. me. He's not hearing me."

  360. And then he goes on. He says, "You do

  361. not save."

  362. And then finally, he says, "You make me

  363. see grievance."

  364. So here I am. You know, God, I'm doing

  365. what I'm supposed to be doing. I'm I'm

  366. I'm praying. And not only am I praying,

  367. but I'm waiting for God to to answer

  368. that prayer and do what it is that I'm

  369. asking God to do. And And what does he

  370. say? Well, God's not listening. God's

  371. not answering. God's not doing anything

  372. about it. And God's just making me still

  373. watch all this injustice take place.

  374. That's, you know, that's his complaint.

  375. God's not doing anything about it. Okay.

  376. Then he complains about what he sees as

  377. the proof that led to those questions.

  378. Says, "For spoiling and violence are

  379. before me, and there are and there are

  380. that rise up strife and contention."

  381. Habac feels fully justified in making

  382. these complaints and asking these

  383. questions because of the circumstances

  384. that he saw around him. I pray, I call

  385. out, nothing happens. And the question,

  386. you know, one way we could put, where is

  387. God? Where is God? Where's God in all

  388. this? Why isn't God answering my

  389. prayers?

  390. And then see in all these circumstances

  391. we find that Habach forms a conclusion.

  392. He says therefore the law is slacked.

  393. Says the law is slacked and judgment

  394. never goeth forth. For the wicked doth

  395. encompass about the righteous and

  396. therefore wrong justice proceedth. Wrong

  397. judgment judgment proceedth.

  398. Yeah. He's writing saying that the

  399. wicked are hemming in the righteous and

  400. that justice is being prevented or

  401. perverted. But notice his conclusion. He

  402. says that the law is slack. It's

  403. powerless. It's weak. It's ineffective.

  404. Justice never prevails.

  405. So he looks at the situation in the

  406. light of his own understanding

  407. which is true to a some extent but then

  408. he jumps to the wrong conclusion.

  409. He jumps to the wrong conclusion. Okay.

  410. So what I'd like to do is I'd like to

  411. put ourselves into Habaca's shoes and

  412. ask ourselves what are some of the

  413. things that makes him feel this way? Why

  414. why does he say the why does he come to

  415. that conclusion? Why does he feel like

  416. this?

  417. Okay, let's talk about the historical

  418. setting. Historical setting.

  419. Okay, the time of writing.

  420. The book of Habach was written during a

  421. time of spiritual decline,

  422. probably during the reign of a king but

  423. of Judah by the name of Jehoakim.

  424. Jehoakim's grandfather was a man named

  425. Manasseh who started out as the worst

  426. king that Judah ever had.

  427. He even sacrificed his own son to a

  428. false god named Moolik.

  429. But later on in life, Manasseh repented

  430. and turned to the Lord, proving that God

  431. can save even the most wicked sinner.

  432. So, so here you have a king by the name

  433. of Manasseh. And what he does is, you

  434. know, he caused Israel to sin. And the

  435. way he causes Israel, Israel to sin is

  436. by leading them into idolatry. And

  437. idolatry was so bad that he even

  438. sacrificed his own son to Moolik, burned

  439. him in fire.

  440. Well, after Manasseh died, his son

  441. Josiah became king. And during the reign

  442. of Josiah, one of the greatest revivals

  443. took place in the kingdom of Judah. The

  444. idols were torn down, God's law was

  445. rediscovered, and the worship of the

  446. true God of Israel was reinstituted.

  447. It was a time of great revival that

  448. someone like Habach would have been

  449. excited about. But Josiah's reign was

  450. cut short and at the age of 39, he was

  451. struck down during the battle by a

  452. wicked nation of Egypt.

  453. Okay, so it starts out Israel's decline

  454. and then all of a sudden you have one of

  455. the greatest revivals in Israel's

  456. history. I mean in Judah's history. He

  457. was excited about that. He's excited

  458. about that. You know, look what God is

  459. doing in Judah. But then what happens?

  460. Josiah's killed.

  461. And and and as a result of Josiah being

  462. killed, the revival stops and then we

  463. find that Judah just starts going

  464. downhill once again.

  465. Then along came Josiah's son by the name

  466. of Jehoakim.

  467. And Jehoakin's reign can be summarized

  468. in a simple phrase that he did evil in

  469. the sight of the Lord.

  470. So at the time of Habach's writing, we

  471. find that Judah was in spiritual

  472. decline.

  473. The evil that he was speaking of seeing

  474. was taking place in Judah among God's

  475. people.

  476. Godly men like Jeremiah who is another

  477. prophet of the Lord during that time was

  478. being persecuted while evil men like

  479. Jehoakim

  480. were prospering.

  481. So you know he looks around and and what

  482. does he see? He sees

  483. evil prospering and the righteous being

  484. persecuted.

  485. So, you know, this is, you know, what

  486. what he's seeing, you know, and he's

  487. asking he's crying out unto God, you

  488. know, God, why are why is he God do

  489. something about it? And what does he

  490. say? You know, God's not doing anything

  491. about it. So, he's complaining to God

  492. about what he sees.

  493. But what about world events?

  494. world events. Not only was it a time of

  495. national corruption, but Habach also

  496. wrote in a time of international crisis.

  497. At the time of his writing, two great

  498. world powers were Assyria, which had

  499. already overthrown the 10 tribes of

  500. Israel and Egypt. But there was another

  501. world power that was emerging during

  502. that time and that was Babylon, which

  503. was challenging Assyrian Egypt for

  504. dominance.

  505. So I guess I guess a good way we could

  506. put it is that this right here was a

  507. time of uncertainty.

  508. So you know I'd like to ask

  509. does that sound familiar to today?

  510. Does that I mean

  511. you look at the United States and

  512. whenever I say looking at the United

  513. States you know I I throw in there you

  514. know how about the church and I you know

  515. I'm talking about Christianity as a

  516. whole and there's a lot of ways today

  517. that Christianity in a whole is in a

  518. place of spiritual decline.

  519. You see that you know that Christianity

  520. as a whole they're moving further and

  521. further away from biblical truth.

  522. They're embracing more and more of the

  523. world.

  524. It's in spiritual decline.

  525. And then we look at, you know,

  526. international, you know, is there any

  527. international crisises going on today?

  528. There is, you know, it's a time of

  529. uncertainty.

  530. A time of uncertainty and spiritual

  531. decline.

  532. You know, whenever I look at Habaca.

  533. You know, I see some great examples,

  534. but also I see some parallels for what

  535. we see today.

  536. You know, little is known about Habach

  537. the prophet.

  538. The book simply records his name and his

  539. profession.

  540. But you know what his name means?

  541. It means to embrace.

  542. The name Habacha means to embrace.

  543. And whenever I read the book of Habach,

  544. please understand, did did Habach have

  545. problems? Did he have problems with

  546. understanding what's going on? Did he

  547. have problems with, you know,

  548. complaining? And, you know, he had he

  549. had his issues, right? But at the same

  550. time whenever I look at Habach I find

  551. that a man even though he was struggling

  552. to understand

  553. and even though he didn't agree with

  554. everything that he saw going on yet

  555. Habach was still a man that embraced the

  556. Lord. He embraced the Lord during those

  557. difficult times.

  558. And I see a great example of that for

  559. today. If you look with me over in the

  560. book of 2 Timothy in chapter 4 and let's

  561. take a look in verse one.

  562. When many other people were moving away

  563. from the things of the Lord, we find

  564. that Habach still embraced God.

  565. Even though there were many things going

  566. on that he could not understand and that

  567. he was struggling with. Although he was

  568. not perfect, yet he still embraced God.

  569. And I think that's a wonderful example

  570. that

  571. no matter how difficult things become in

  572. our lives,

  573. no matter how much is going on that we

  574. don't understand,

  575. we still need to embrace God. You look

  576. with me over in the book of second

  577. Timothy in chapter 4.

  578. And you know, remember, you know,

  579. looking at the parallels between that

  580. and what we see going on today. Look

  581. with me in chapter 4 and verse one. He

  582. says, "I charge thee therefore before

  583. God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall

  584. judge the quicken the dead at his

  585. appearing in his kingdom." He says,

  586. "Preach the word, be instant in season

  587. and out of season, reprove, rebuke,

  588. exhort with all longsuffering and

  589. doctrine.

  590. For the time will come when they will

  591. not endure sound doctrine, but after

  592. their own lust shall they keep heap to

  593. themselves teachers having itching ears

  594. and shall turn away their ears from the

  595. truth and shall be turned unto fables.

  596. you know, we uh

  597. we're doing a marriage class at the you

  598. know, at the church and basically the

  599. marriage classes, you know, we're you

  600. know, what does God say about marriage?

  601. What does God say about the roles and

  602. responsibilities of husbands and wives?

  603. What does the Bible say about raising

  604. children? What does the Bible say about,

  605. you know, finances and and things like

  606. that? What does the Bible teach us about

  607. marriage?

  608. I advertised it on Facebook.

  609. I I I never did that before with the the

  610. boost in decide, well, I'm going to go

  611. ahead and boost this and whatever boost

  612. means. But evidently that went out to a

  613. lot of different people and and I and

  614. and I was getting all these comments and

  615. you know what the comments were? There

  616. was some people that said, "Yeah, this

  617. is great that you're doing this."

  618. thought there was a lot of comments that

  619. said that the Bible is so out of date

  620. and that it was wrong to use the

  621. scriptures

  622. as a guide for marriage.

  623. So, you know, I I look at this and the

  624. time will come when they will not endure

  625. sound doctrine,

  626. but after their own lust shall teach

  627. heap to themselves teachers having

  628. itching ears, turn away their ears from

  629. the truth, and shall be turned

  630. unavabled.

  631. And and that's what we see taking place

  632. today. So whenever I look at Habach and

  633. the things that he's struggling with, I

  634. look at our own situation today and I

  635. could see many of the same things. But

  636. notice what he says. But watch thou in

  637. all things. Endure afflictions, do the

  638. work of evangelist, make full proof of

  639. thy ministry. He says, I'm charging you.

  640. You need to be preaching the word

  641. instant in season and out of season, and

  642. reprove, rebuke, and exhort with all

  643. longsuffering and doct. So what do we

  644. need to do? You know, even even though

  645. the world may be going in one way, even

  646. though in many cases, you know,

  647. professing Christianity goes in a in

  648. another way, what what should we do?

  649. We knew we need to embrace God. We need

  650. to embrace the truth and we need to

  651. continue to preach the truth.

  652. What we find is that questions Habac

  653. struggles with are the same questions

  654. that people struggle with today.

  655. Questions like why is there so much

  656. oppression?

  657. Why all the injustice?

  658. Why do evil men prosper? Why do bad

  659. things happen to good people? Why

  660. doesn't God do something? Why doesn't

  661. God step in and clean up this mess?

  662. Those are the questions that people

  663. could ask

  664. and the answers that God gives to those

  665. questions are the same answers for

  666. today. And the conclusion that Habac

  667. comes to at the end of the book is the

  668. same conclusion that we must come to

  669. today.

  670. Habac faces a dilemma that has

  671. confronted faithful people in every age.

  672. the dilemma of seemingly unanswered

  673. prayer for the healing of society.

  674. The prophet is one of those persons who

  675. fervently prayer prays for peace in our

  676. world and who experiences only war who

  677. pray for God's good to come on earth and

  678. who find only human evil. But he is also

  679. one with every soul who has prayed for

  680. healing beside the sick bed only to be

  681. confronted with death. With every spouse

  682. who has prayed for love to come into the

  683. home and then found only hatred and

  684. anger. With every anxious person who has

  685. prayed for serenity but then further

  686. disturbed and agitated.

  687. And before we become too critical of

  688. Habaca,

  689. have we ever done the same thing?

  690. Have you ever called to God and it

  691. seemed like that he didn't listen?

  692. Did you ever pray and it seems as if God

  693. did not answer? You know, I think if

  694. we're honest with ourselves, I would say

  695. that yes, we can relate to Habaca. We

  696. can relate because we have seen the same

  697. things.

  698. Have you ever experienced an injustice

  699. or watched as someone you love

  700. experienced it and wonder how God could

  701. let that happen, especially after you

  702. prayed about it? Do we expect certain

  703. things from God and then he doesn't pull

  704. through as we think he should? So, we

  705. complain to God.

  706. I think we struggle with these things in

  707. our walk with God.

  708. Well,

  709. the conclusion that tobaca comes to is

  710. that the law slack paralyzed and

  711. ineffective.

  712. Let me ask you, is that true?

  713. You know,

  714. God makes promises, right? God makes

  715. promises. Let me ask you, are those

  716. promises going to be fulfilled?

  717. Are those promises for certain going to

  718. be fulfilled?

  719. Absolutely.

  720. But but let me ask you this though. Are

  721. those promises necessarily going to be

  722. fulfilled in the way that we think they

  723. ought to be fulfilled?

  724. Are those promises going to be fulfilled

  725. necessarily in the time that we think

  726. they ought to be fulfilled?

  727. You see, and and that was Habac's

  728. problem is that, you know, let me ask

  729. you, do you think that Habach knew the

  730. Bible?

  731. Do you think that Habach knew about God?

  732. He saw that God was holy.

  733. You know, but the thing is is that

  734. things were not happening exactly as

  735. thought as as Habach thought they would.

  736. He had these preconceived notions of how

  737. God was going to work and when God was

  738. going to work. And if those preconceived

  739. notions didn't fall into place the way

  740. he thought they should,

  741. he was struggling with it.

  742. And and and remember what was it that we

  743. said was the the theme of the book of

  744. Habac? What's the theme? The just shall

  745. live by what?

  746. The just shall live by faith. And let me

  747. ask you, when is it so important to live

  748. by faith? Is it so important to live by

  749. faith when everything is going exactly

  750. the way that we think they ought to go?

  751. Is it important to live by faith because

  752. whenever we pray, all of a sudden our

  753. prayers are automatically answered in

  754. the time and the way that we expect them

  755. to be answered?

  756. Or does faith come in whenever we go to

  757. God in prayer and it appears that God is

  758. not answering?

  759. Whenever it appears that everything is

  760. going just the opposite the way that

  761. they ought to be. You see, that's when

  762. faith comes in. And that's what the

  763. message of Habac is all about is that

  764. Habaca, yeah, things aren't going the

  765. way, you know, it is even going to get

  766. worse. It's even going to get worse

  767. because the way that God is going to

  768. answer his prayers is not the way that

  769. he thinks they should. But the thing is

  770. is that the just shall live by faith. We

  771. need to embrace God.

  772. We need to embrace God. We need to walk

  773. by faith regardless

  774. of how things appear to be going in our

  775. lives.

  776. You know, he he says that the word of

  777. God, the law is paralyzed and

  778. ineffective.

  779. Is that true?

  780. Is that true? If you look with me over

  781. in the book of Psalm 19 and in verse 7

  782. and and like I say the the time that

  783. this really matters in our life

  784. is whenever it appears that God is not

  785. listening.

  786. You look with me in the book of Psalm 19

  787. and let's take a look at verse 7.

  788. And he says this

  789. says, "The law of the Lord is perfect,

  790. converting the soul.

  791. The testimony of the Lord is sure,

  792. making wise the simple. The statutes of

  793. the Lord are right, rejoice in the

  794. heart. The commandments of the Lord are

  795. pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of

  796. the Lord is clean, enduring forever. The

  797. judgments of the Lord are true and

  798. righteous all together.

  799. Regardless of the circumstances,

  800. regardless of the things that we might

  801. be going through, we can be certain that

  802. the law of God, the word of God is not

  803. ineffective. The word of God is going to

  804. do exactly what God said is going to do.

  805. It must come to pass.

  806. Another thing Habac says, he says that

  807. justice never prevails. And there again,

  808. is that true? Is that true? Justice is

  809. never going to it's never going to

  810. prevail. But you know something? There's

  811. a day whenever justice is going to

  812. prevail, isn't there? There is going to

  813. be a time whenever God steps in and God

  814. straightens things out. It may not be in

  815. our lifetime, but the thing is is that

  816. there again, God's word is truth.

  817. Justice is going to prevail.

  818. If you look with me over in the book of

  819. Psalm 73, here we find here we find that

  820. a psalmist a psalm writer had the same

  821. struggles.

  822. You look with me in the book of Psalm 73

  823. and let's take a look beginning in verse

  824. one.

  825. Psalm 73

  826. beginning in verse one.

  827. says,

  828. "Truly, God is good to Israel, even to

  829. such as are of a clean heart.

  830. But as for me, my feet were almost gone.

  831. My steps had had well nigh slipped. For

  832. I was envy of the foolish whenever I saw

  833. the prosperity of the wicked, for there

  834. are no bands in their death, but their

  835. strength is firm. They are not in

  836. trouble as other men, neither are they

  837. plagued like other men. Therefore, pride

  838. compasseth them about as a chain.

  839. Violence coverth them as a garment.

  840. Their eyes stand out with fatness. They

  841. have more than heart could wish. They

  842. are corrupt and they speak wickedly

  843. concerning oppression. They speak

  844. loftily. They set their mouth against

  845. the heavens. Their tongue walketh

  846. through the earth. Therefore his people

  847. return hither and the waters of a full

  848. cup are rung out unto them. And they

  849. say, "How does God know? And is there

  850. knowledge in the most high? Behold,

  851. these are the ungodly who prosper in the

  852. world. They increase in riches. Verily,

  853. I have cleansed my heart in vain. I wash

  854. my hands in innocency.

  855. For all day long I have been plagued and

  856. chasened every morning.

  857. You say, "I'm saved. I pray. I study the

  858. Bible. I go to church. I seek to live

  859. for God. And therefore, I expect certain

  860. outcome."

  861. And you see, that's that's what he's

  862. saying. You know, I I've cleansed my

  863. heart for nothing because I look around

  864. and I see the prosperity of the wicked.

  865. Here I am. I'm struggling but these

  866. wicked people are prospering.

  867. Do we look at people who are lost and

  868. think that they have a better life than

  869. we do and inwardly think what is the use

  870. of living for the Lord?

  871. That's a hard question, isn't it? It's a

  872. hard question.

  873. Well,

  874. the problem was that he looked at what

  875. was going on around him and he's and the

  876. things that he was doing and the

  877. psalmist like Habac arrived at the wrong

  878. conclusion.

  879. He doesn't see the whole picture.

  880. And there again, you know, I think, you

  881. know, we we get so wrapped up in what's

  882. going on in our lives that we have a

  883. tendency of of of being nearsighted.

  884. And that's what Habac is. He's he's he's

  885. nearsighted. You know what? You know

  886. what God was going to do with Haka? He's

  887. going to tell Habaca, you know, HCA,

  888. your vision needs to be recalibrated.

  889. And you need to be reccalibrated to

  890. where you're not looking at what's right

  891. here. You need to be looking at beyond.

  892. You need to be looking beyond. And and

  893. and that's what the psalmist says right

  894. here. If you look with me in verse 16,

  895. he says, "When I thought to know this,

  896. it was too painful me for me until I

  897. went into the sanctuary of God. Then I

  898. understood their end."

  899. And and and let me let me add something

  900. else, too. Not only do we understand

  901. their end, but how about our end? How

  902. about our end?

  903. You know, do we focus on what's the here

  904. and now, or are we focused on eternity?

  905. Do we focus on eternity? Do we focus on

  906. what the end is going to be like? I like

  907. what one person said. You know, one

  908. thing, one thing about the Bible is, you

  909. know, how it's going to end. And you

  910. know how it's going to end? It ends that

  911. we win.

  912. We're going to be glorified together

  913. with Jesus Christ. And on the other

  914. hand, not only are we going to be

  915. glorified together with Jesus Christ,

  916. but all those that reject Christ, all

  917. that injustice, it's going to be

  918. straightened out. God is going to

  919. straighten out world events.

  920. He's going to do it. We don't have to

  921. worry about it.

  922. The back of the just shall live by faith

  923. and not by sight. I like that. The just

  924. shall live by faith.

  925. Well, I'd like to close us with a

  926. passage from the book of Proverbs.

  927. It's along these same lines. I'm sure

  928. it's a passage that you're all familiar

  929. with.

  930. Proverbs in chapter 3

  931. in verses 5-6.

  932. Proverbs 35-6

  933. says, "Trust in the Lord with all your

  934. heart and lean not to your own

  935. understanding. In all of your ways

  936. acknowledge him and he will make your

  937. paths straight. I like that. Trust in

  938. the Lord with all of your heart and lean

  939. not your own understanding. You see that

  940. was Habac's problem. He's leaning on his

  941. own understanding. We need to lean upon

  942. the understanding of God's word. See

  943. things in the light of God's word. Our

  944. father in heaven, we

  945. we thank you for the message of the book

  946. of Habach that the just shall live by

  947. faith.

  948. Father, as we look at Habac, we see the

  949. struggles that he was going through.

  950. Lord, we also understand that these are

  951. the same things that people go through

  952. today. It's the same type of struggles

  953. that Lord that we see things happening

  954. in our own lives that we don't

  955. understand

  956. and many times are things that we pray

  957. about and we don't receive the answers

  958. to those prayers in the way that we

  959. expect.

  960. And Father, help us understand that you

  961. are the God who is in control of all

  962. things. and Lord that you are working

  963. things for a certain end and that all

  964. things are working together for good.

  965. Lord, we pray that we might learn to

  966. live by faith and not by sight. Is in

  967. Christ's name. Amen.

  968. >> Thank you, Pastor Tom.

  969. We're going to observe the Lord's supper

  970. here and um We do this

  971. often.

  972. We don't want it to become a routine,

  973. but we don't want to not do it as well.

  974. So, we're sort sort of in not letting it

  975. become a routine and and uh trying to do

  976. it so that it has meaning

  977. uh to what is in the word of God. Turn

  978. to Matthew

  979. with me.

  980. Lord's table. This is not our church's

  981. table.

  982. The church is one. So,

  983. it's open.

  984. The only things that's required is uh

  985. faith in the blood.

  986. Now that you've been born again by

  987. faith,

  988. God says come.

  989. So, we come to remember the Lord Jesus

  990. and what he did.

  991. I'm in Matthew chapter 26

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  992. and the the disciples, not only did they

  993. get to hear Jesus teach these things and

  994. go through these things with them and be

  995. a perfect example everything he did.

  996. Many times they just totally missed what

  997. what he was saying and what he was

  998. doing,

  999. but you know found out about it later

1000. on. Oh, that's what he said and that's

1001. what he meant. But this particular event

1002. in Matthew 26 comes at the very end of

  1003. Jesus ministry.

1004. And it's incredible. He said, "My time

1005. has not yet come. My time has not yet

1006. come." And finally, his time come. And

1007. his time come exactly parallel with the

  1008. Passover.

1009. So the Jews were used to the Passover,

1010. celebrating the Passover. That goes all

1011. the way back to Exodus where God said,

1012. "When I see the blood on the doorpost,

1013. I will pass over you." Hence, that's

1014. where the Passover came from.

1015. So God didn't want the Jews to miss out

1016. on what this blood on the po doorpost

1017. was for. It was for the forgiveness of

1018. sin. A holy and just God can pass over

1019. us because of the blood of his son and

1020. the body of his son. That's what it

1021. became. The Jews, a lot of them missed

1022. out on this. They didn't realize that

1023. Jesus literally became the Passover

1024. lamb. Paul says that in 1 Corinthians

  1025. chapter five, I think.

1026. But nevertheless, the apostles were

  1027. there with Jesus.

1028. And in the upper room, I'm going to

  1029. start

  1030. verse 21.

1031. He says, "Verily, I say unto you, one of

1032. you are going to betray me." We know who

1033. who that was. It was Judas.

1034. And they were exceedingly sorrowful and

1035. began one of them to say, "Lord, is it

1036. I?" They were concerned about

  1037. themselves. And I guess that's a good

  1038. thing.

1039. Be concerned about yourself. But he he

1040. that dips his hand with me in the dish,

1041. the same shall betray me. So Jesus going

1042. to give him a sign that it's Judas.

1043. And the son of man,

1044. you know, that was Jesus favorite phrase

  1045. for himself.

1046. He called himself a lot of things, a lot

1047. of names. But when his uh his favorite

1048. thing to call himself was a son of man.

1049. And that's who he is. We're men and

  1050. women, children,

1051. and we're human beings. And we need a

1052. savior. We need a redeemer.

1053. So that's why he became a man. God the

1054. son became a man. The incarnation. One

1055. of the most incredible things that has

  1056. ever happened.

1057. And then he laid his life down to pay

1058. for our sin. And he said, uh, it is

1059. written of him. So here Jesus comes

1060. right on time. You know, his time was

1061. not yet come, but now his time has come.

1062. And it has been written, woe unto the

1063. man by whom the son of man is betrayed.

1064. So the Old Testament tells us about this

  1065. betrayal

1066. that the son of God, the son of man is

1067. going to betrayed. They don't know who

1068. now they know it's Judas, one of his

1069. own, one of a one of the 12.

1070. One of Jesus old familiar friends. And

1071. Judas who betrayed him answered,

1072. "Master, he said, I he said, you have

1073. said." As they were eating, Jesus took

1074. bread and he blessed it and he broke it

1075. and he gave it unto the disciples and he

1076. said, "Take, eat. This is my body." So

1077. that's what we're about to do. This is

  1078. not literally Jesus' body. It's a

1079. symbol. There things in the Bible that

1080. are symbols. And this is just symbolic

1081. of the blood and the and the body of

1082. Jesus for us to remember him.

1083. Taking communion won't save you or keep

1084. you saved. There's that's not what this

1085. is for. This is a remembrance

1086. that we remember Jesus on this very

1087. night uh on this side of the cross as he

1088. was getting ready to go and the great

1089. sacrifice he made um for us. Miles,

1090. would you thank the Lord for his

  1091. precious body?

1092. >> You now as we

1093. as we go from this place,

  1094. loving you more,

  1095. trusting you more.

1096. May the power of your love and the light

  1097. of your word shine

1098. to a sin darkened world as we go from

  1099. this place.
