  1. Well, I trust you had a blessed time

  2. while we were in Florida.

  3. If anyone wants to see pictures of my

  4. grandchildren, I'm sure I could find one

  5. or two.

  6. And so, we had a good time down there.

  7. There's nothing like buying a

  8. four-year-old boy a uh

  9. plastic crossbow with arrows.

  10. >> Only a grandparent would do that.

  11. >> That's true.

  12. >> But guess what? I am on his favorite

  13. list now,

  14. but not on anybody else's.

  15. But he's having a good time with the

  16. crossbow and he has instructions not to

  17. shoot people with it. But uh he's

  18. enjoying his $10 gift and I got a

  19. special video from him saying, "I love

  20. you, Grandpa."

  21. So I bribed my grandkids.

  22. Anyway, we did have a good time and it

  23. was a enjoyable time. I think a

  24. profitable time with our family and I

  25. thank you for praying for that uh very

  26. very much.

  27. We are back in our series of Acts 15. or

  28. excuse me on church government. And we

  29. are in Acts

  30. here in Acts chapter 14 and 15 here this

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  31. morning to try to

  32. continue in this study which for many of

  33. you it probably feels like we're over

  34. this is over too much information uh

  35. over what you need. It's not a subject

  36. we deal with very much, nor should it be

  37. a subject we deal with very much. It's

  38. not a subject that we ought to

  39. overoccupy oursel because there's good

  40. Christian churches with these all three

  41. of these forms of church government. So

  42. why should we do it?

  43. Well, we need to know the form of church

  44. government of the churches we are

  45. affiliated with if we're going to

  46. function in that church in a harmonious

  47. way and in an intelligent and effective

  48. way. Uh and so it's quite important that

  49. we do that. And so part of this is to

  50. prepare folks for joining Athens Bible

  51. Church part that are interested. Part of

  52. it is simply to reinstruct all of us in

  53. things we've heard before but probably

  54. haven't

  55. had some of these things sealed in our

  56. minds and hearts yet.

  57. I will say there are things in the Bible

  58. that good Christians differ on. I hope

  59. you know that by now. Trust you do.

  60. Armenians and Calvinists differ on

  61. things.

  62. uh there's differences between

  63. uh Christians on certain doctrines of

  64. the scripture, water baptism,

  65. um that kind of thing. The Lord's

  66. supper, how we are to look at it, and on

  67. this subject as well, there's

  68. differences. Good people have their

  69. differences,

  70. and good people have their differences

  71. on this subject.

  72. So, we're not trying to demonize or

  73. characterize people who differ from us

  74. on these matters as if there's something

  75. wrong with their discernment or

  76. spirituality.

  77. But, uh it is important to know what you

  78. believe and what others believe. So, uh

  79. there are certain things in the Bible

  80. that people are always going to disagree

  81. with. And sometimes it's very serious

  82. like the deity of Christ or the trinity

  83. or the inspiration of the Bible. Those

  84. are very serious subjects and there's no

  85. room for leg for uh coloring outside the

  86. lines there on any of those things.

  87. But when it comes to these other uh

  88. certain doctrines, yes, there's some

  89. struggle to understand what the Bible is

  90. saying. It's not the Bible's fault. It's

  91. ours. It's our our limited ability to

  92. grasp the things that are there.

  93. And it's also very difficult when you

  94. see people struggling to make a passage

  95. fit their system.

  96. You feel it, don't you?

  97. Try to get a Jehovah Witness to properly

  98. interpret John 1:1.

    John 1:1

  99. It's obvious they can't do it. have to

  100. they have to

  101. make a they make great efforts to avoid

  102. the truth

  103. and or an Armenian to try to understand

  104. Romans chapter 8 the last few chapters

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  105. and they start talking to him about an

  106. election or predestination and they get

  107. all nervous and sweaty and argumentive

  108. and upset

  109. or can I put it on the other side,

  110. someone who's a very strong five-point

  111. Calvinist, try to get them to be honest

  112. about 1 John 2:2.

    1 John 2:2

  113. And you see him sweating bullets trying

  114. to get around that passage.

  115. So there's there's things that all of us

  116. have issues with and struggles with,

  117. whatever our system of theology on on a

  118. lot of subjects. Uh but this one is

  119. another one. And as you know uh there's

  120. three models of church government that

  121. have come down through church history

  122. where Christians understand this subject

  123. differently and we've already gone over

  124. that and gone over it. I'll just touch

  125. it just a little bit and then we'll get

  126. into Acts 15. The reason Acts 15 is

  127. important, every view, whether every

  128. view of the three views of of church

  129. government, whether it's Episcopalian,

  130. Presbyterian or Congregationalism,

  131. has to deal with this section

  132. and the they have to come to this

  133. section and and have a understanding of

  134. the section and uh

  135. some have more trouble than others.

  136. So this is a helpful section.

  137. It's not necessarily an easy section.

  138. And behind this is the Judaizers, right?

  139. The Judaizers caused a problem in the

  140. church at Antioch.

  141. Antioch in Syria, north of Jerusalem.

  142. And people from the church in Jerusalem

  143. had gone up to the church at Antioch

  144. and started causing problems there.

  145. You know that history.

  146. And so Paul and Barnabas got into it

  147. with them up there to their credit.

  148. But then they went they all went down to

  149. Jerusalem

  150. to deal with this subject.

  151. And it was it's an important subject. It

  152. deals with sotiology. It deals with

  153. salvation.

  154. And so what what happened was there was

  155. a church council. The first church

  156. council dealt with the subject of

  157. salvation. How are you saved?

  158. And because some people

  159. uh had did not have the right view of

  160. that, these those people had to be

  161. corrected and put in their place.

  162. And that's exactly what happened.

  163. It is a very important subject. It's a

  164. very important issue

  165. and it was dealt with by the apostles

  166. and the elders and the church

  167. in Jerusalem.

  168. So pick it up with me in Acts 14.

  169. Acts chapter

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  170. 14. Well, I'm going to go to 15.

  171. Acts 15.

  172. certain men

  173. who came down from Judea.

  174. Judea was higher elevation

  175. to Barnabas and Saul.

  176. Excuse me, I'm getting myself mixed up

  177. here. Certain except a certain men who

  178. came down from Judea taught the brethren

  179. and said, "Except you be circumcised

  180. after the manner of Moses, you cannot be

  181. saved.

  182. This was the issue.

  183. Who started this fight?

  184. People from Jerusalem

  185. started the problem in Antioch

  186. and giving the impression that the

  187. authority of the Jerusalem church was

  188. behind them for this particular

  189. understanding

  190. of salvation.

  191. When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no

  192. small dissension and disputation with

  193. them, what does that mean?

  194. >> Had a big fight.

  195. >> They had a big fight

  196. and would God, this is a fight that

  197. needs to be fought whenever it arises.

  198. No small dissension and disputation

  199. took place to Barnabas and Paul's

  200. credit.

  201. And

  202. they determined that Paul and Barnabas

  203. and certain other of them

  204. should go up to Jerusalem. Remember it's

  205. higher in elevation

  206. to the apostles and elders about this

  207. question.

  208. Now where did the problem come from?

  209. Jerusalem.

  210. Where did the problem manifest itself?

  211. The church in Antioch.

  212. So the church at Antioch is taking the

  213. problem that started in Jerusalem

  214. back to Jerusalem.

  215. Okay, this is important. This problem

  216. started in Jerusalem. It didn't start in

  217. Antioch. It started in people from the

  218. Jerusalem church trying to make the

  219. people in the church at Antioch conform

  220. to their theology.

  221. salvation.

  222. And so there was one item on the agenda,

  223. one.

  224. And the one item on the agenda

  225. was, how is someone saved?

  226. And we might think, well, that should be

  227. obvious. Well, it wasn't obvious to

  228. these people that were causing the

  229. problem.

  230. And it wasn't obvious to the people in

  231. Antioch that get stirred up.

  232. Now Paul and Barnabas understood very

  233. clearly and no doubt other leaders in

  234. Antioch understood very clearly. But

  235. it's this whole business of what

  236. these people came from Jerusalem. They

  237. were sent by James.

  238. Are we out of order? Are we out of sync

  239. with the mother church in Jerusalem?

  240. So verse three, being brought on their

  241. way by the church, they passed through

  242. Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the

  243. conversion of the Gentiles and cause

  244. great joy to all the brethren. Who's

  245. that? Paul and Barnabas. What are they

  246. causing joy about? Gentile people

  247. getting saved without being circumcised,

  248. without becoming Jews.

  249. And when they come to Jerusalem, they

  250. were received by the church.

  251. So the mother church, if we can call it

  252. the mother church, received them

  253. and they were received by the church and

  254. the apostles and the elders.

  255. So the mother church in Jerusalem

  256. received Paul and Barnabas and re and uh

  257. and that includes the leadership of the

  258. mother church in Jerusalem, the apostles

  259. and elders. Now here is a very important

  260. point.

  261. The apostles had not left Jerusalem yet.

  262. They had gone out a little bit like

  263. Peter did in some other areas, but

  264. mainly the apostles were still in

  265. Jerusalem.

  266. It's a very important point. Why were

  267. the apostles involved? Because they were

  268. still there.

  269. So

  270. everybody seems happy as Paul and

  271. Barnabas come back towards Jerusalem

  272. and then they're in Jerusalem

  273. in verse four. But then something

  274. happens.

  275. There arose up certain of the sect of

  276. the Pharisees

  277. who believed

  278. saying it was needful to circumcise them

  279. and to command them to keep the law

  280. Moses who rather them gentiles.

  281. Now the background of these people is

  282. they were from this phariseical

  283. background. So their phariseical

  284. background,

  285. the way they interpreted the Bible

  286. before they were Christians is now

  287. crowding into their understanding of the

  288. Bible as Christians or professing

  289. Christians.

  290. And they said, "Well, you got to

  291. circumcise them, command them to keep

  292. the law of Moses."

  293. and the apostles and elders came

  294. together to consider this matter.

  295. Who are the apostles? The apostles that

  296. are in Jerusalem haven't left yet. Who

  297. are the elders? The elders. The elders

  298. of the church of Jerusalem.

  299. And when there been much disputing

  300. and when we come to verse 7 we thought

  301. who's disputing here the apostles and

  302. elders are they disputing well I don't

  303. believe so I think the apostles were

  304. clear on this and I think the elders at

  305. least most of the elders in Jerusalem

  306. were clear on this but there were other

  307. people involved besides the apostles and

  308. elders church members were there as well

  309. this was an open meeting this was not a

  310. closed dooror

  311. You will see that

  312. when there had been much disputing,

  313. Peter rose up and said to them, "Men and

  314. brethren,

  315. you know that a good while ago, God made

  316. choice among us that the Gentiles by my

  317. mouth should hear the word of the gospel

  318. and believe." This was an important

  319. moment

  320. and a wonderful providence.

  321. The first Gentiles were not saved

  322. through Paul and Barnabas.

  323. The first Gentiles were saved through

  324. Peter.

  325. God had a reason for that. And remember,

  326. if you go back to Acts 10 and Cornelius

  327. and his family, guess what? When Peter

  328. went into the uncircumcised

  329. and ate with them,

  330. church members jumped Peter's case. You

  331. went into the uncircumcised.

  332. What are you doing?

  333. It's a very interesting observation

  334. because apparently in the early church,

  335. no leader was above criticism,

  336. not even an apostle.

  337. And these folks felt an obligation to

  338. call him out.

  339. And then Peter said, "Well, who God gave

  340. them the same gift as he gave us? It was

  341. I that I could withstand God.

  342. They got the Holy Spirit.

  343. When I preached, they all got saved.

  344. They got the Holy Spirit. They spoke in

  345. tongues, which showed that they that not

  346. the tongues of today, but the tongues of

  347. the first century.

  348. The ability to speak a foreign language

  349. you'd never learned.

  350. Who was I that could withstand God?

  351. Don't Don't argue with me. Argue with

  352. God. He did it.

  353. So Peter was right on there with Paul

  354. and Barnabas

  355. and he stood up and made it very clear.

  356. Paul, Barnabas, this isn't the first

  357. time Gentiles have got saved. This isn't

  358. the first time in the church age that

  359. people have been added to the church.

  360. This already happened with me.

  361. So you're not just arguing with Paul,

  362. Barnabas. You're arguing with God.

  363. You're not just arguing with Paul,

  364. Barnabas, and Peter. You're arguing with

  365. God.

  366. When there and when there had been much

  367. disputing, Peter rose up and said to

  368. them, "Men and brethren, you know that a

  369. good while ago God made choice among us

  370. that Gentiles by my mouth should hear

  371. the word of the gospel and believe. And

  372. God who knows the hearts, bore them

  373. witness, giving them the Holy Spirit

  374. even as he did to us."

  375. And where does an unsaved person ever

  376. have the Holy Spirit?

  377. Since they got the Holy Spirit, they're

  378. saved. That's why I baptized them.

  379. Since God accepted him, we accepted

  380. them.

  381. And God accepted him without being

  382. circumcised. And put no difference

  383. between us, verse 9, and them. Purifying

  384. their hearts by what? Faith. In my

  385. opinion, this was one of Peter's finest

  386. hours.

  387. And Peter was speaking not just for

  388. himself, but for the whole apostle band.

  389. And he said in verse nine, "And put no

  390. difference between us and them,

  391. purifying their hearts by faith." And we

  392. can say by faith alone, apart from

  393. circumcision and and uh all the rest and

  394. keeping the law.

  395. Now therefore, why put God to the test

  396. to put a yoke on the neck of the

  397. disciples, which neither our fathers,

  398. that's Jewish fathers, nor we were able

  399. to bear. We couldn't keep the law. Why

  400. you trying to make them keep it for

  401. salvation,

  402. but we believe verse 11,

  403. Peter is now officially speaking

  404. for all the apostles.

  405. He's the official speaker

  406. not just for himself.

  407. All the apostles in the church at

  408. Jerusalem and they were all there.

  409. We believe

  410. that through the grace of the Lord Jesus

  411. Christ, we that's Jewish people who've

  412. been circumcised and and have been under

  413. the law, we will be saved even as they.

  414. He doesn't put it the other way around.

  415. they'll be saved even as us.

  416. In other words, we have to not trust our

  417. circumcision. We have to not trust our

  418. lawkeeping. We have to be saved as

  419. Gentiles are saved where they have none

  420. of this background.

  421. We shall be saved even as they

  422. that to me was Peter's probably finest

  423. hour

  424. really.

  425. Then all the multitude kept silent.

  426. Remember there's thousands of people in

  427. that church. And all the multitude kept

  428. silent in verse 12 is the explanation

  429. of that earlier verse

  430. in verse 7 when there had been much

  431. disputing.

  432. So this was not a private meeting among

  433. leaders.

  434. This was a meeting before the whole

  435. church.

  436. leaders were there. The disagreements

  437. were between

  438. people who were there whose theology was

  439. correct and people who were there whose

  440. theology was incorrect or incomplete.

  441. So all the naysayers

  442. were shut up

  443. by Peter's statement

  444. and that gave the opportunity to

  445. Barnabas and Paul to give their side of

  446. things.

  447. Then all the multitude kept silence and

  448. listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring

  449. what miracles and wonders God had

  450. brought among Gentiles by them.

  451. Now remember this is important. Barnabas

  452. was a member of the Jerusalem church.

  453. So he had a credibility that even Paul

  454. did not have. I mean read the earlier

  455. chapters of

  456. Acts.

  457. And

  458. so when Barnabas and Paul, they're both

  459. declaring the miracles and wonders God

  460. had brought among the Gentiles by them,

  461. it was very important. Why are they

  462. talking about the miracles? Because God

  463. does not authenticate error by miracles.

  464. When the miracles done by Paul and

  465. Barnabas, both of them, it was an

  466. obvious authentication by God. These men

  467. are proved to me.

  468. And you have to go back and act and see

  469. those different miracles.

  470. And after they held their peace,

  471. finally Paul and Barnabas are done.

  472. This is a very interesting situation.

  473. Uh they've come together, they've got a

  474. meeting, there's one question on the

  475. agenda. The apostles and elders come

  476. together. Everybody else is listening.

  477. Pretty soon, there's a bunch of

  478. disputing. Peter rose up and shuts

  479. everybody's mouth. And then Paul and

  480. Barnabas speak about the miracles God

  481. has wrought. So the people have heard

  482. the head apostle and the people have

  483. heard about the miracles

  484. and they're thinking, "Wait a minute,

  485. God doesn't authenticate error.

  486. So

  487. we better change our mind."

  488. And after they held their peace,

  489. James answered.

  490. Now this is James,

  491. the halfb brotherther of Jesus. This is

  492. not James the apostle. He's dead in

  493. heaven. He's been martyed. This is James

  494. who wrote the book of James. This is

  495. James, the halfb brotherther of Jesus.

  496. He was the pastor of the Jerusalem

  497. church.

  498. He was the primis enterparez the first

  499. among equals of the Jerusalem church.

  500. Uh and he rises to speak. Peter spoke

  501. for the apostles. James spoke for the

  502. elders

  503. at Jerusalem.

  504. And it will become obvious that the

  505. apostles all of them do not agree with

  506. these Judaizers.

  507. on sotiology

  508. and that the uh elder board at Jerusalem

  509. doesn't agree with him either.

  510. So, these were people that were claiming

  511. to be from James

  512. and possibly even sent by him, but not

  513. James maybe missed their error. And then

  514. they're trying to correct the church at

  515. uh Antioch when they're erroneous

  516. themselves.

  517. So, they got a big red face.

  518. So, here's James. After they held their

  519. peace, James answered, saying, James

  520. closes the meeting with this.

  521. Men and brethren,

  522. hearken to me.

  523. Simeon, that's Peter's name, has

  524. declared how God first did visit the

  525. nations to take out of them a people for

  526. his name. This is biblical. This is Old

  527. Testament biblical.

  528. to this agree the words of the prophets

  529. as it's written after this quoting Amos

  530. after God takes out a people for his

  531. name among Gentiles after this I will

  532. return and will build again the

  533. tabernacle of David which is fallen down

  534. and I'll build again its ruins and will

  535. set it up

  536. that the residue of men might seek after

  537. the Lord and all nations upon whom my

  538. name is called says the Lord who does

  539. all these things known to God are all

  540. his works from the beginning of the age.

  541. And then he says, I'm in total agreement

  542. with the arrest of the of all the

  543. apostles and I'm in total agreement with

  544. Paul and Silas. Wherefore my judgment is

  545. that we trouble not them who from among

  546. the Gentiles are turned to God.

  547. We trouble not them. Let's leave these

  548. people alone. Let's not try to make Jews

  549. out of Gentile,

  550. but that we write to them that they

  551. abstain from pollutions of idols and

  552. from fornication and from things

  553. strangled and from blood.

  554. This is very interesting what he's

  555. asking here. These are

  556. these are matters

  557. of

  558. u fellowship.

  559. If the gentile church wants to

  560. fellowship with the Jewish church, they

  561. have to not just agree with the church

  562. about that fornication's wrong, but they

  563. abstain from idols. That's a big one.

  564. Everybody ought to know that's wrong.

  565. But how about this other from things

  566. strangled and from blood? Well, Jewish

  567. people won't eat something that has

  568. blood in it. They wouldn't eat English

  569. pudding, right?

  570. So what do they call that?

  571. >> Blood pudding. They wouldn't eat

  572. anything with blood in it and I don't

  573. blame them. Blood pudding is terrible.

  574. And so but anyway, they had a thing on

  575. that. That was a conscience issue with

  576. them even as Christians.

  577. So this is verse 20. James is is issuing

  578. a um

  579. a a recognition that remember Paul and

  580. Barnabas are right and nobody need

  581. should be troubling these Gentiles. It's

  582. biblical. The Gentiles be saved. God's

  583. still got a program for the Jews with

  584. the coming kingdom. But that doesn't

  585. change things about what's going on now.

  586. And then he says, "Moses, verse 21, of

  587. old time has in every city them that

  588. preach him being read in the synagogue

  589. every Sabbath day."

  590. Plenty of people are preaching

  591. what Moses said about all these things.

  592. We don't have to do it. Our job's

  593. different.

  594. Then pleased it the apostles and elders.

  595. That's the tw the twel apostles and

  596. whoever many elders of the Jerusalem

  597. church with the underline with the whole

  598. church.

  599. Apparently the people who are

  600. wrong-minded changed their mind

  601. and voted differently.

  602. Whatever Peter said and what James said

  603. corrected their wrong ideas

  604. and their aberant theology right there.

  605. Right there.

  606. So the whole Jerusalem church got

  607. clarity on this subject. Apparently some

  608. were aberant on this subject. Some of

  609. them didn't have clarity on this

  610. subject. And this problem brought about

  611. a clarity in the Jerusalem church

  612. that they needed

  613. that they needed.

  614. So he says in verse 22 that it pleased

  615. the apostles and elders with the whole

  616. church to send chosen men of their own

  617. company to Antioch with Paul and

  618. Barnabas, namely Judas surnamed Barabus

  619. and Silas chief among the brethren. So

  620. they didn't just they're going to write

  621. a letter, but they don't just write a

  622. letter. They send two of their own

  623. leading men.

  624. So they're saying, "Look, we're going to

  625. spread this far and wide." This idea

  626. that the Jerusalem church believes in

  627. circumcision and lawkeeping

  628. uh of Moses uh in a legalistic way as a

  629. way of salvation is heresy. And we we

  630. want anything with it. We don't have

  631. we're not with these guys. Whoever they

  632. are, whoever they whatever they they say

  633. about us, we're not there.

  634. And they wrote letters by them after

  635. this manner. The apostles and elders

  636. plural plural plural. Apostles, all of

  637. them. Elders, all of them. And brethren,

  638. all of them.

  639. even the ones that were spreading error

  640. on that occasion.

  641. Send greeting to the brethren who are of

  642. the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and

  643. Silosa.

  644. And notice they call these Gentiles

  645. what?

  646. Brethren,

  647. the brethren in Jerusalem church are

  648. sending this news to the brethren in the

  649. Gentile church.

  650. For as much as we have heard that

  651. certain men who went out from us have

  652. troubled you with words subverting your

  653. souls,

  654. saying, "You must be circumcised and

  655. keep the law." Underline this about five

  656. times. To whom we gave no such command.

  657. They pretended to be from us or they

  658. imagined they were representing us but

  659. they never were commissioned by us to

  660. say such things

  661. to teach such things

  662. to whom we gave no such commandment.

  663. That's a total complete repudiation

  664. of the Judaistic doctrinal statement.

  665. It seemed to us verse 25 good to us

  666. being assembled with one accord with

  667. underlined with one accord. There was no

  668. dissenting boat.

  669. Everybody

  670. went with it.

  671. God be thanks when we have leaders that

  672. can stand up for the truth

  673. and bring others along

  674. who've been misled or misleading.

  675. This is a great moment in church

  676. history.

  677. It seemed good to us being assembled

  678. with one accord to send chosen men to

  679. you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul.

  680. We love them Barnabas and Paul. We're

  681. all in for Barnabas and Paul and what

  682. they teach and how they teach it. Men

  683. that have hazarded their lives for the

  684. name of our Lord Jesus. We have sent

  685. therefore Judas and Silas who shall also

  686. tell you the same things by mouth.

  687. So they took this problem very

  688. seriously. They sent a letter and then

  689. they sent people to make sure nobody

  690. misunderstood what the letter was saying

  691. and not saying.

  692. For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit

  693. and to us. Now they're bringing the Holy

  694. Spirit in to lay upon you no greater

  695. burden than these necessary things. This

  696. is necessary for fellowship. Kind of

  697. hard to have a church dinner if

  698. somebody's cooking kosher and nobody

  699. else is. Somebody's eating a ham

  700. sandwich. You know, it doesn't work.

  701. That you abstain from things offered to

  702. idols and from blood and from things

  703. strangled and from fornication, basic

  704. morality issues for which if you keep

  705. yourselves, you'll do well. Bear ye

  706. well.

  707. Now that letter took off and those men

  708. took off with us. So the early church

  709. took this problem very seriously. They

  710. delegated two people to travel uh with

  711. the others to make sure nobody thought,

  712. "Oh, Paul and Barnabas just made this

  713. up." No, these were others from the

  714. church of Jerusalem, qualified people.

  715. Um

  716. so verse 30 when they were dismissed

  717. they came to Antioch and when they

  718. gathered together the multitude together

  719. they delivered the epistle which when

  720. they'd read they rejoiced for the

  721. consolation that's gentile churches in

  722. these different areas and Judas and

  723. Silas being prophets also themselves

  724. exhorted the brethren with many words

  725. and confirmed them after they tried

  726. there a space they were let go in peace

  727. from the brethren to the apostles

  728. Notwithstanding, it pleased Silas to

  729. abide there still. And Paul and Barnabas

  730. continued in Antioch, teaching and

  731. preaching the word of God with many

  732. others also.

  733. So this happened right after the first

  734. missionary journey and before the second

  735. missionary journey and the air came in

  736. and it was dealt.

  737. Now, Acts 15 that we've just kind of

  738. summarized

  739. is appealed to by all three models of

  740. church government.

  741. I mean, they have they all have to deal

  742. with what's exactly going on here.

  743. The Episcopalians emphasize the primacy

  744. of Peter among the apostles and the

  745. primacy of James among the elders.

  746. Um

  747. and Peter Ton mentions that they they

  748. believe that the seed of not full-blown

  749. but the principle if not the whole full

  750. concept is here illustrated by a

  751. differentiation of ordained ministers

  752. and in their mind James is a monarchial

  753. bishop and so forth in Jerusalem.

  754. So that's how they see it. The

  755. Presbyterians look at this as a local

  756. church problem settled on a higher level

  757. as a justification for their view of the

  758. preset.

  759. One writer said the church churches are

  760. not independent but interdependent

  761. government representation and connection

  762. between churches. Local churches do not

  763. minister alone but in connection with

  764. other local churches. The church is more

  765. than a local church. That's how they

  766. look at how do how do independence how

  767. do congregational churches like Bible

  768. churches and Baptist churches and some

  769. others we look at as two sovereign local

  770. churches that had a problem

  771. and the two local churches that had a

  772. problem are dealing with the problem

  773. between themselves recognizing that if

  774. they don't deal with it and get it dealt

  775. with clearly it's going to affect all

  776. other churches.

  777. in a deep way.

  778. And so what should we say?

  779. I I I believe the last part this is the

  780. one this is important. The problem

  781. started in Jerusalem from people in

  782. Jerusalem and then infected Antioch and

  783. then so Antioch and people went to

  784. Jerusalem and went where the problem

  785. started.

  786. And the problem was big enough that the

  787. apostles and elders of the church

  788. Jerusalem had to deal with it because it

  789. came from their church that they were

  790. teaching. This is kind of important.

  791. People in a church can do things the

  792. leaders don't agree with at all.

  793. Isn't that true? Ever have your children

  794. do something you don't agree with?

  795. >> People in a church can do things that

  796. the leadership does not approve of.

  797. Right? Not the way the leadership would

  798. do it. People can teach things to the

  799. leadership doesn't they do that. It's

  800. not right that they do it, but they do

  801. it thinking they're right.

  802. It happens.

  803. So when it happens, the leadership must

  804. take a stand on it and say that's not

  805. what we believe here. That's not how we

  806. how we do things.

  807. So what should we say with all this? Um,

  808. well, number one, church government is

  809. not the main point of Acts 15.

  810. It's not the main point.

  811. Sometimes we read our concerns back into

  812. a passage, but it's not the main point.

  813. The main subject here is the way of

  814. salvation, right? That's the point.

  815. salvation by faith alone or salvation

  816. uh by faith plus plus plus plus plus

  817. plus plus plus other things.

  818. A second thing was under attack the

  819. oneness of the church.

  820. I mean these things could have just

  821. split things up. The you could have had

  822. a gentile church that has one way of

  823. salvation, a Jewish church another way

  824. of salvation. That's horrible.

  825. John Phillips said, "There can be no

  826. little doubt that was a faithful day for

  827. the future of Christianity. Failure to

  828. reach the right decision would forever

  829. split the church or else reduce it to

  830. the status of a Jewish cult."

  831. FF Bruce, the great scholar, the New

  832. Testament scholar said there was a grave

  833. danger of a complete cleavage between

  834. the church of Jerusalem and Judea and

  835. the on the one hand and the churches of

  836. Antioch and her daughter churches on the

  837. other.

  838. There's two things going on. Salvation

  839. by grace through faith alone plus the

  840. unity of the church between Jew and

  841. Gentile. This had to be dealt with and

  842. it was and God allowed it to happen

  843. so that the church could go on unified.

  844. It's kind of painful when churches have

  845. problems and have problems with other

  846. churches. But God has a purpose in all

  847. of them. even in the problems.

  848. So, what about church government

  849. questions?

  850. Here it gets a little opaque

  851. because Acts 15 honestly doesn't

  852. completely fit any form of church

  853. government we've got today

  854. other than the recognition that the

  855. apostles have to be the ultimate

  856. authority.

  857. And here we are less than 20 years from

  858. Pentecost and the beginning of the

  859. church. there's a problem.

  860. I mean, it's a little difficult just how

  861. we should read and understand this

  862. section.

  863. Um,

  864. but there's some things that we can say,

  865. "Yep, that part is right."

  866. In Acts 16:4 it says, "And as they went

    Acts 16:4

  867. through the cities, they delivered to

  868. them the decrees to keep, dogmas, keep,

  869. and they were ordained of the apostles

  870. and elders who were at, excuse me, to

  871. keep that were ordained of the apostles

  872. and elders who were at Jerusalem." And

  873. so there were so were the churches

  874. established in the faith and increased

  875. in number daily. So for the church to

  876. grow, a clarity had to be made and a

  877. stand had to be taken and they did it.

  878. IH Howard Marshall said they write with

  879. authority to their Christian brothers at

  880. this stage. The Jerusalem church still

  881. felt possessed of authority to tell

  882. other churches what to do. No doubt

  883. because no and he underlines this. No

  884. doubt because it was led by the

  885. apostles.

  886. Underline that thought. The church of

  887. Jerusalem had authority over other

  888. churches because the church of Jerusalem

  889. had all the apostles in it.

  890. So it's the apostles that have the

  891. authority

  892. and that's and they just happened at

  893. that time in church history to be in

  894. Jerusalem. Of course, other than the

  895. apostle Paul,

  896. Patton Glow said, "This epistle proves

  897. that the church of Jerusalem as the

  898. mother church still exercised a

  899. superintendence over the other

  900. churches."

  901. And I I think because the apostles were

  902. involved, that's true.

  903. And the letter was written to the

  904. Gentiles, not to the local churches

  905. themselves. Gentiles as Christians, not

  906. local assemblies.

  907. The other thing is the whole

  908. congregation in Jerusalem was involved

  909. in a major way. They embraced this. The

  910. whole church embraced this.

  911. um leaders were not exempt

  912. from discussion or they could didn't

  913. keep it to themselves. There's no hint

  914. that the apostles elders ever had any

  915. disagreement among themselves but there

  916. was a disputation for a while where

  917. people were still unclear.

  918. Longenecker said the reference to

  919. apostles, elders and the whole church is

  920. comparable to the kuman structure of

  921. authority where executive action for

  922. religious matters was in the hands of

  923. the priest other matters in the hands of

  924. the overseers. There was a council of 12

  925. to 15 and all the for mature members of

  926. the community gave them approval to the

  927. decisions of the priests and overseers

  928. and council. It seems clear that the

  929. Kuman and within the church of

  930. Jerusalem, the congregation while not

  931. equivalent to the Greek assembly in its

  932. governmental powers was involved

  933. underlined in the deliberation of its

  934. leaders.

  935. Leaders had their part. People had their

  936. part.

  937. And I believe that that's right. And

  938. that's what congregational government,

  939. the leaders have their part. They're

  940. elected by the congregation. They lead

  941. the congregation does vote on certain

  942. things including things like

  943. excommunication.

  944. So

  945. the wonderful thing is everybody was one

  946. of four. So this ended well

  947. things like this don't always end well.

  948. This ended well.

  949. And uh

  950. CG Von he's a Presbyterian writer. He

  951. said, "Happy had the universal church

  952. been if a spirit of equal wisdom had

  953. always presided in her councils or a a

  954. spirit of equal simplicity been

  955. everywhere diffused through her

  956. congregations." But of course, we know

  957. that hasn't always been true.

  958. How did they get the mind of the spirit?

  959. Remember the letter said, "Seem good to

  960. us, the Holy Spirit." They got the mind

  961. of the spirit through the spoken word of

  962. Peter. the spoken word of Paul and

  963. Barnabas and the spoken word of James.

  964. That's how they got it.

  965. And the spoken word of the Old Testament

  966. scriptures.

  967. So,

  968. um I hope this is helpful to you.

  969. Uh church meetings are not the most fun

  970. thing to be part of, but sometimes

  971. they're needful.

  972. And so churches, people shouldn't say I

  973. don't want to go to meetings. That's not

  974. for me. You have a responsibility

  975. sometimes to be there.

  976. Now this is the earliest public

  977. documents of the church at Jerusalem on

  978. these matters

  979. and it's one of the boldest and

  980. magnanimous in the annuals of church

  981. history. someone said.

  982. So it was fatal to the life and ministry

  983. of the Jerusalem church to have a false

  984. position and they repudiated.

  985. RK Harrison said it was a courageous

  986. decision.

  987. I'm going to end with this. It was a

  988. courageous decision for it bound it was

  989. bound to bring disfavor of unbelieving

  990. Jews upon the Christian church

  991. especially the mother church at

  992. Jerusalem.

  993. That is a very perceptive comment

  994. when the Jerusalem church repudiated

  995. the Judaizers

  996. that were saying the Gentiles have to be

  997. circumcised and keep the law of Moses

  998. and have been literally become Jews

  999. before they become Christians.

1000. Once that Jerusalem church made this

1001. decision, they put a bullseye on every

  1002. Christian in that church.

1003. The hatred of the Jerus city of

1004. Jerusalem came upon that church in a

1005. great way because of this

  1006. decision.

1007. You know in the book of James, James is

1008. writing to all the people that were

1009. scattered. And we know that the

1010. persecution came and they were scattered

1011. before this and now they're scattered

  1012. again.

1013. God help us to do the right thing when

1014. it comes to hard decisions

1015. and side with the truth. Theological

1016. truth, practical truth, biblical truth.

1017. But the result of this was a second

  1018. missionary journey

1019. and the unifying of the church.

1020. Now, what does it mean for Athens Bible

  1021. Church in 2026?

1022. Let's just bring it up to date.

1023. Well, congregational government does not

  1024. mean

1025. that local officers of the church are

1026. not subject to the apostles.

1027. Every Christian is subject to the

  1028. apostle.

1029. And how can we be subject to the

1030. apostles? We have to be subject to the

1031. New Testament that they wrote.

1032. There's no leader that should be above

1033. the apostles or apart from the apostles.

  1034. Second, inner church problems

1035. are to be settled by the two

  1036. congregations involved in those

  1037. problems.

1038. That's pretty basic here, isn't it? and

1039. the decisions that are made to solve the

1040. problems dare not go against the

1041. apostles or the early church.

1042. Any position of the early church should

1043. be the position of churches down through

  1044. time.

  1045. Um

  1046. third application

1047. when we have problems and we have things

1048. to deal with in our assembly we need to

1049. not just think about ourselves. whole

1050. Athens Bible Church. If we do this,

1051. we'll grow or we do this, we'll

  1052. diminish.

1053. Any decision we make on any problem, and

1054. some of them might be hard

  1055. decisions,

1056. we have to take the rest of the church

1057. of Jesus Christ in consideration when we

  1058. make it.

1059. You see, James understood something.

1060. Other churches are going to be affected

1061. by what we do today.

  1062. That's just

1063. this is not just about J. This is not

1064. just about Jerusalem church and Antioch

1065. church. We It is such importance that if

1066. we do the wrong thing, they're going to

1067. be affected in a wrong way. Do the right

1068. thing, they'll be affected in a right

  1069. way.

1070. There are some churches that have taken

1071. stands that put them out of business.

  1072. Good for them.

1073. It's better to go out of business than

1074. create some kind of compromised

  1075. situation that affects churches

1076. everywhere and there and then other

1077. people say, "Well, so and so church did

1078. this and therefore it's okay."

1079. Um, the whole church needs to be in mind

1080. when we make our decisions on a local

  1081. level.

  1082. And

1083. sometimes the best thing we can do is a

1084. hard thing. Call out air for what it is.

1085. If it comes from in in our midst or if

1086. it comes because of our people or if

1087. it's if it makes us uncomfortable, we

1088. have to change, we do what we have to do

1089. because it's bigger than us. It's always

  1090. bigger than us.

1091. And so the congregational form of church

1092. government does not mean we live in a

1093. bubble and it doesn't matter what we do.

1094. We don't have to think about anybody

1095. else. We just do our thing and that's

1096. the only thing that matters.

1097. What we do affects everybody else in

  1098. some way.

1099. And either error gets a applause by

1100. those who endure it and who promote it

1101. or uh or permit it or is rebuked and

  1102. God's work goes on.

1103. I can't tell you how many people have

1104. justified something because of what

1105. another church did that they know about.

1106. I had someone say to me, "Well, I know I

1107. know other Christians that believe that

1108. sex before marriage is fine."

1109. Well, does that make it right?

1110. You want to overthrow the whole Bible

1111. and everything it says about fornication

1112. because some group says this is okay.

1113. But people do such things. They justify

1114. themselves by what somebody else is

1115. doing somewhere else and then want

1116. churches to bend to that. You can't bend

  1117. to it

1118. if you want to be faithful to the Lord.

1119. Same thing with different doctrinal

  1120. error. There's some error that's just

  1121. wrong.

  1122. It shouldn't be tolerated. There's some

1123. there's some interpretations of the

1124. Bible and minor things where good

1125. Christians differ on, but there's some

1126. things that should be of no shouldn't

1127. even be questioned. Shouldn't even be in

  1128. doubt.

  1129. Major issues.

1130. uh we should major on majors and minor

1131. on minors but we should never we need to

1132. teach the whole council of God and we

1133. need to be gracious in minor things when

1134. people differ from us but there's

1135. certain things we must make our stand on

1136. we owe it not just to ourselves

1137. and to Jesus we owe it to the rest of

1138. the church of Jesus Christ

1139. not only the church that's in our day

1140. but the church that follows

  1141. so kind of important

1142. So even though we believe church

1143. government is local and there's no group

1144. outside the local church that can really

1145. come in and deal with stuff

1146. uh we have to deal with our own issues

  1147. in congregational government. That

1148. doesn't mean we view ourselves in

1149. isolation and or or the problems we deal

  1150. with in isolation.

1151. When good churches compromise, other

  1152. churches are affected.

1153. When good Christians compromise, other

  1154. Christians are affected.

1155. So I hope that this has been helpful uh

1156. on the church government in a way that

1157. even though we believe in a

1158. congregational government here, we don't

1159. believe that what we do or say is in

1160. isolation and should be made in in

  1161. without consideration of other

1162. Christians elsewhere or other churches

  1163. elsewhere.

1164. We want to do the right thing to

1165. encourage other people to do the right

  1166. thing.

1167. Father, we thank you for what uh we've

1168. learned here tonight. Uh we know that

1169. none of us always do the right thing,

1170. but we need to try to do the right thing

1171. in every way possible to honor and

  1172. glorify you.

1173. We pray for our church. We don't know

1174. how long we have on this earth

1175. till the trumpet sounds and the church

1176. age is over. But may Athens Bible Church

1177. be whether we grow big or small or

1178. whether we go out of existence or

1179. whether we continue and that we would do

1180. the right thing and leave all the

1181. results to God in every case that comes

1182. before us as much as we can waiting on

1183. you in Jesus name. Amen.

  1184. >> 384. If you'll stand with us. 384.

1185. >> As we go from this place,

  1186. loving you more,

  1187. trusting you more.

1188. May the power of your love and the light

  1189. of your word shine

1190. to a sin darkened world as we go from

  1191. this place.
