  1. Open your Bibles if you would to the

  2. book of Job

  3. this morning.

  4. Continue in our

  5. in our series uh

  6. major doctrines of the Bible. We're

  7. still with the Holy Spirit

  8. looking at the person and the work of

  9. the Holy Spirit.

  10. He is a real person. We've been looking

  11. at verses that

  12. uh clearly tell us those things.

  13. And all the apostles were monotheistic.

  14. They were Jewish. So they got up a lot

  15. of mornings and

  16. repeated the prayer and the verse in

  17. Deuteronomy about God being one God.

  18. Paul said that over and over in the New

  19. Testament. Peter did as well. All the

  20. apostles affirmed that there was one

  21. God, but

  22. manifest himself in three persons. The

  23. Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  24. So this morning we're going to take a

  25. deep dive into the Old Testament

  26. uh to see

  27. what the Old Testament has to say about

  28. the spirit of God.

  29. He's here uh in in he's not in every

  30. book in the Old Testament, but he's in a

  31. lot of them.

  32. And we're going to get introduced to

  33. that this morning. And you know, God, he

  34. works.

  35. Um, you know, there's nothing impossible

  36. for God. God is a great God. He he can

  37. work over the world. He can work in the

  38. world.

  39. Uh, he doesn't work through the world.

  40. He's not the author of sin,

  41. but as well, he can do things um out

  42. there. He's over the world. He's in

  43. control of things

  44. and he uh he can help his people

  45. as well. And his people are the nation

  46. of Israel

  47. and the church.

  48. In the Old Testament, we see him using

  49. the nation of Israel

  50. over and over again as

  51. uh the spirit of God. He was in

  52. creation. We're going to see some of

  53. that here in a second when we get back

  54. to Genesis. But in the meantime, turn to

  55. o open up your Bibles to Job chapter 26

    Job 26 chapter mention

  56. and verse 13. We have several verses

  57. here in Job that are similar to this

  58. that say by his spirit he has garnished

  59. the heavens and the hands has formed the

  60. crooked serpents. So here we see the the

  61. one of the oldest books in the Bible,

  62. the book of Job, uh, right out of the

  63. gate here gives us an indication that

  64. God is spirit

  65. and he made the heavens. And we're going

  66. to see that in Genesis here in a second.

  67. Back to Job 32.

  68. Job 32 and verse 8.

  69. We have a similar verse here. We can see

  70. right away that Job knew God as a

  71. spirit.

  72. And he says so here he says there is a

  73. spirit in man and the in the inspiration

  74. of the Almighty gives him utterance. So

  75. Job knew there was a difference between

  76. you know we call God a person but he's a

  77. person

  78. not in a sense that we are. He's the

  79. Bible says um God says I'm not a man.

  80. Don't think I'm a man that I'm like you.

  81. We make a big mistake there. But at the

  82. same time we can think of God as a

  83. person with personality

  84. uh who he is and what he has done. And

  85. here Job says he you know the spirit of

  86. man is one thing. Paul says that in

  87. Corinthians we saw that where he talked

  88. about the spirit of man you know is the

  89. emnity of God. can't know God. But

  90. nevertheless, you know, we're made in

  91. God's image. And here Job says that he

  92. inspires men. That God does. Now, look

  93. over in chapter 33.

  94. In verse four, we have another verse

  95. very similar to this. The spirit of God

  96. has made me and the breath of the

  97. Almighty has given me life. It's almost

  98. like Job's read the creation account,

  99. right?

  100. So here in the two oldest books of the

  101. Bible, we find uh uh references to God,

  102. God as the spirit.

  103. And turn over to Psalm 104.

  104. Some of the Psalms are like this. They

  105. go back to the beginning and tell us

  106. that God is a spirit.

  107. In Psalm 104

  108. and verse 30,

  109. he says, "Thou sendest forth thy spirit

  110. and they are created and thou renewest

  111. the face of the earth." It's almost like

  112. the psalmist has read Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  113. that we're about to. So, you know, God

  114. clearly uh is active in his creation. So

  115. when we see the spirit of God and we

  116. think about the spirit of God, this is

  117. one of the very first areas he appears

  118. in the word of God is in is in the

  119. Psalms

  120. uh and in in in Job and showing us about

  121. creation. Now let's go back to Genesis.

  122. Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  123. and you know the understanding and the

  124. you know the fact that God is a spirit

  125. you know the Bible starts out that way

  126. here in Genesis and we we see in Matthew

  127. as well don't we're not going to turn to

  128. that one just yet but there's one in

  129. Matthew

  130. Uh the book of Matthew starts out with

  131. the spirit of God. So both the Old

  132. Testament and the New Testament start

  133. out with the spirit of God.

  134. Um and they end with the spirit of God

  135. as well. And what Jesus said in the book

  136. of Revelation, the spirit says come and

  137. the bride says come. So the spirit of

  138. God is uh throughout his word here. So

  139. we uh we want to get to know this

  140. spirit.

  141. And again

  142. he ordered the work of God here in

  143. Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  144. Um in verse two he says the earth why

  145. don't I read verse one.

  146. In the beginning God created the heaven

  147. and the earth

  148. and the earth was without form and void

  149. in darkness

  150. was upon the face of the deep.

  151. And the spirit of God moved upon the

  152. face of the waters. And you know this

  153. word here moved is the Hebrew word for

  154. brood. It's what you know what a mother

  155. does uh to her babies. She broods over

  156. them um and takes care of them. And here

  157. the spirit in in the beginning brooded

  158. over uh creation out there. And

  159. um you know there there's a lot of water

  160. involved, isn't there

  161. in creation?

  162. For whatever reason, God wanted a lot of

  163. water on this planet. This planet is

  164. more water than anything.

  165. Uh but at the same time, we see here

  166. that, you know, the uh God made order

  167. out of, you know, this uh the creation

  168. that he brought forth here. And the

  169. spirit moved brooded as it says upon the

  170. waters. And God was there in the

  171. beginning like the psalms say like Job

  172. says God was there in the beginning. Now

  173. look over in chapter 2

  174. and we there's a lot of references here

  175. um to this but

  176. and the spirit of God gave us life.

  177. you know, he formed life and he gave us

  178. a life. There's,

  179. you know, everyone has a has one life.

  180. The Bible says, hopefully you get saved

  181. and you find the Lord and you figure out

  182. the meaning of life and the

  183. understanding of life and you don't

  184. waste your life.

  185. But this is a gift from God to us to to

  186. be able to, you know, enjoy his

  187. creation. Enjoy being a dad, enjoy being

  188. a husband, enjoy being a family. You

  189. know, the the great things that God has

  190. given us are great privileges

  191. and opportunities that he wants us to to

  192. uh to take advantage of and to be a part

  193. of. And it's, you know, when we let sin

  194. get in the way, we get sidetracked from

  195. that.

  196. But here, God gives uh gives us life.

  197. And the Lord God formed man of the dust

  198. of the ground and breathed into his

  199. nostrils and the breath of life, and man

  200. became a living soul. So yeah,

  201. Adam must have looked like the

  202. gingerbread man laying there.

  203. How many have you have made something on

  204. the beach out of sand? And it's just a

  205. you make a form of something, but you

  206. you and I can make a form. We certainly

  207. can't breathe life into it.

  208. So here the spirit of God gives us our

  209. very breath

  210. and we become a living soul. Men have it

  211. backwards when they think they're a

  212. body. Yes, we have a body, but something

  213. greater than our body is our soul.

  214. And our soul was the very breath of God

  215. from the spirit of God. He gave us life.

  216. And those are important things for us to

  217. know about God is he's the one that can

  218. give life

  219. uh to dead people. And that would be us,

  220. you know, and we're going to talk about

  221. some of those things here in a minute.

  222. But God is the source of life. God is

  223. the source of eternal life.

  224. and uh and not just physical life. So uh

  225. and then God said back in chapter one

  226. as we think about the trinity and the

  227. revelation of the trinity, the Bible

  228. wastes no time in proclaiming that God

  229. is an us.

  230. And here he says in verse 126,

  231. God said, "Let us make man in our image

  232. and our likeness."

  233. Those are important things. You know,

  234. when we

  235. we get to where we're going to talk

  236. about, you know, the reason that we

  237. exist, why why do we exist? Well, we

  238. exist to know God and to bring glory to

  239. God. That's why we exist. That's uh what

  240. Solomon said

  241. in his book, but he wasn't the only one

  242. that said it. Here, God says it. I want

  243. you to be I want to make you in my

  244. image. I'm going to make you in my

  245. likeness, and I'm going to give you

  246. dominion over over creation. So,

  247. creation is not going to have dominion

  248. over us. We're going to have dominion

  249. over creation. That's something that God

  250. has given us. Over the cattle, I had a

  251. couple stakes this week. I had to

  252. confess.

  253. But God put us over these animals

  254. uh to subdue them, to butcher them, to

  255. eat them.

  256. You know, it's just so basic.

  257. But God here in the beginning made us in

  258. his likeness, in his image. And God is

  259. wise. And you know, God is all these

  260. things. and and you know he he in him is

  261. the the fear of the Lord is the

  262. beginning of wisdom. So as we understand

  263. our purpose in life, you know, it goes

  264. way back here to the early parts of

  265. Genesis, the early parts of Job for us

  266. to to understand

  267. who we are and where we came from. So

  268. here we see the trinity. Let us make man

  269. in our image. And you know God is a

  270. triune God. Father, Son, and Spirit. And

  271. and you know, just it's no accident that

  272. we're a Trinity as well. We have a soul.

  273. We see here we have a body like Adam

  274. have. And and we have a spirit. And that

  275. spirit, it's similar to our personality.

  276. You know, no two people are alike. You

  277. know, even an identical twins,

  278. you know, they have different

  279. fingerprints. you know, they may have a

  280. lot of things in common, but they have,

  281. you know, their own unique set of

  282. fingerprints. And, you know, you're you

  283. and I'm me and and but that's the way

  284. God made us in his image to know him.

  285. And verse 27 says, "So God created man

  286. in his own image, and in the image of

  287. God created he him, male and female

  288. created he them." And you know what a

  289. what an assault that has been under in

  290. our world.

  291. But there are only two genders, male and

  292. female. And we're created in the image

  293. of God. And God bless them. That's

  294. important for us to see. God wants to

  295. bless us. He wants us to be uh you know

  296. like him and to know him.

  297. So you know we

  298. we see here in the early part of Genesis

  299. these things.

  300. So you know there there should have been

  301. no doubt among the Jews about you know

  302. they've got the book of Genesis and here

  303. God says in and the spirit of God says

  304. and God says let us make man in our

  305. image and and God says us when he refers

  306. to himself.

  307. So these are are things that the Jews,

  308. you know, they would have known these

  309. things and the apostles as well. So they

  310. would naturally begin to think about God

  311. being a trinity. And then boom, in the

  312. book of Matthew, we have all three of

  313. them there in Jesus ministry on the

  314. earth. And all three of them show up

  315. more than once. Some of those, you know,

  316. we have looked at.

  317. So you know, God is a personal God. He's

  318. He's one God. You know, we we believe

  319. that God is one. That's what James says.

  320. If you believe God is one, you do well.

  321. But we should have a greater faith than

  322. the demons on this one. And to know

  323. that, you know, God is who he says he is

  324. as he reveals to us himself in his word.

  325. And we see early on in the Bible, in the

  326. book of Genesis here, you know, God is a

  327. great giver. You know, he's not he's not

  328. selfish. He's not stingy by any means.

  329. He's very generous and gracious God, you

  330. know, in what he's given us to enjoy.

  331. Even the wicked, you know, who who will

  332. never name God's name other than to

  333. curse him he make and they owe their

  334. existence to him whether they ever come

  335. around to that or not. But someday they

  336. will.

  337. And we cannot enjoy our calling as a

  338. human being until we understand these

  339. basic things that the spirit of God

  340. breathed into Adam and Adam became a

  341. living soul. And you know the word of

  342. God uses this word spirit and there are

  343. there are other words in the Hebrew.

  344. There's breath

  345. uh where we saw back here where God

  346. breathed in and the spirit literally uh

  347. made Adam become a living soul, eternal

  348. soul. So human beings are eternal.

  349. You know we uh we're going to suffer an

  350. eternal death without the work of

  351. Christ.

  352. But with the work of Christ, we're going

  353. to have an eternal life together with

  354. God.

  355. So the the Old Testament says the spirit

  356. of God, like we saw, turn back to

  357. chapter one

  358. of Genesis.

  359. And look at this phrase here in the

  360. middle of verse two. He says, "And the

  361. spirit of God," that word, you know,

  362. that it's the spirit of God, it's two

  363. words. It's like the son of God, you

  364. know, that's two words. He's God and

  365. he's a son. Here it says God is a

  366. spirit. So, it's two words. God is

  367. spirit and God is God,

  368. you know, and believe it because that's

  369. what this book

  370. has to say. You know, God does not, you

  371. know, that wasn't the test. I joke about

  372. this one. This wasn't the test for the

  373. apostles. Jesus said, you know, he got

  374. them all together in the upper room. He

  375. said, "Okay, if you guys can explain to

  376. me the trinity, I'm going to let you get

  377. into the ministry." That's not what he

  378. said.

  379. It's hard to explain the trinity. We

  380. must go to the word of God. He But the

  381. the test is love your neighbor and wash

  382. your neighbor's feet. That's the test.

  383. And and so as we believe God here in

  384. verse three, God said, "Let there be

  385. light

  386. and there was light. God saw the light

  387. and it was good." And God divided the

  388. light from the darkness.

  389. And God called the light day

  390. and the darkness he called night and the

  391. evening and the morning were the first

  392. day. So, God the spirit uh is here early

  393. on in the book of Genesis as well as

  394. what uh Job told us about God the Spirit

  395. as well. He's he has a distinct

  396. personality in each one of his the God

  397. of the God members of the Godhead.

  398. God the Father is distinct. God the Son

  399. is distinct and God the Spirit is very

  400. distinct especially uh here in the Old

  401. Testament.

  402. And you know the Bible says things like

  403. the you know the spirit is like a dove.

  404. There's some things the Bible says that

  405. the spirit is like you know we'll look

  406. at some of those when we get to that.

  407. But when the Bible says that the spirit

  408. is like a dove, it doesn't mean he's,

  409. you know, he's a bird by any means. It

  410. just means like a dove is harmless, you

  411. know, and and and you know, doves hurt

  412. no one,

  413. you know, they're always there to help.

  414. Well, so it is with the Holy Spirit.

  415. He's like the dove, harmless mother

  416. taking care of her babies.

  417. And that's what the book of Genesis says

  418. as we begin where we see God is a

  419. spirit.

  420. And the Holy Spirit in the Old

  421. Testament, he he does not indwell

  422. um Christians or indwell

  423. uh Jews as it were then, but as well

  424. there's plenty in the Old Testament to

  425. tell us about the Messiah. So turn to

  426. Isaiah 11.

  427. So there are there are two parallels in

  428. the Old Testament. Um we see God the

  429. spirit using the people and the nation

  430. of Israel as well. We see the prophets

  431. predicting that someday the Messiah was

  432. going to come and the Messiah

  433. uh was going to be

  434. um

  435. the spirit of God was going to be

  436. resting upon him.

  437. So, not only does the Old Testament

  438. predict the Messiah,

  439. it also tells us here that the spirit is

  440. going to rest upon him.

  441. And one of the best is here in Isaiah

  442. and verse one.

  443. You know, even though you know Jesus is

  444. completely and holy God

  445. in every way,

  446. yet

  447. the Holy Spirit came to him

  448. and and was upon him and helped him.

  449. Not that he needed it, we need it. So we

  450. can see in his humanity and our humanity

  451. the love of God and the care of God to

  452. do that like a mother bruts her her

  453. children.

  454. And here we see in this section

  455. and there shall come forth a rod of the

  456. stem of Jesse and a branch shall grow

  457. out of his roots. You guys know who that

  458. is. This that's the Messiah. That's God

  459. the Son. Well, here comes God the

  460. Spirit. And the spirit of the Lord will

  461. rest upon him. The spirit of wisdom and

  462. understanding,

  463. the spirit of counsel and might, the

  464. knowledge and after the fear of the

  465. Lord.

  466. You say, "Well, how did Jesus know all

  467. he knew?" There's your answer.

  468. the spirit of God came to help him know

  469. and and you know when he got here and we

  470. have the account of this in the New

  471. Testament. We could go there and look at

  472. this in the Gospels and we will in a

  473. future message but we're in the Old

  474. Testament now and here God says I'm

  475. going to send my son and I'm going to

  476. send my spirit this triune God. Try and

  477. try and understand this without knowing

  478. God's trinity.

  479. Now, that would be very difficult, but

  480. it's easy knowing that that there's one

  481. God yet distinct persons

  482. uh in heaven. Now, look at Isaiah 42.

  483. Isaiah

  484. 42.

  485. Turning my pages kind of slow this

  486. morning.

  487. And here we have another prophecy.

  488. about

  489. the Messiah.

  490. And here again, behold my servant,

  491. that's Christ, that's the Messiah,

  492. whom I uphold. My elect and my my soul

  493. delightth.

  494. Who's speaking?

  495. Well, that's God the Father.

  496. God the Father is going to send forth

  497. God the Son and and the Spirit is going

  498. to rest upon him. So try and understand

  499. that without knowing there is a trinity,

  500. a triune God, father, son, and holy

  501. spirit. And here it is

  502. centuries before it ever happened.

  503. He will not cry nor lift up nor cause

  504. his voice to be heard in the street. A

  505. bruised reed shall he not break, and a

  506. smoking flax will he not quench till he

  507. brings forth justice

  508. in truth. And here's the tenderness

  509. and the compassion

  510. and the graciousness

  511. of Christ.

  512. That's what John says. He came in He

  513. came in truth. He came in grace and

  514. truth. That'd be a good message, grace

  515. and truth.

  516. But that's what Jesus did. He came in

  517. grace and truth. Not only did he say,

  518. "Thou shalt not." He said, "I love you

  519. and I'm going to help you. I'm going to

  520. die for your sins."

  521. So, he did this and he's opened our eyes

  522. to our sin. That's what verse uh seven

  523. says over there. To open the blind eyes

  524. to bring out the prisoners, those who

  525. are in darkness to the prison house.

  526. Well, that's me.

  527. So, this is what God is going to do.

  528. and his son Jesus Christ who is also

  529. going to have the Holy Spirit resting

  530. upon him. He shall not fail. Verse four,

  531. and uh nor be discouraged till he has

  532. set justice in the earth and the coast

  533. shall wait for his law. Now, we as well,

  534. that's not going on now. We're in the

  535. church, but we know that when when in

  536. the messianic age,

  537. this is the way it's going to be coast

  538. to coast. Everyone's going to know the

  539. Lord.

  540. And that's another time and another

  541. place and another message. But remember

  542. what Jesus did in in in Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  543. You guys are familiar with it. I'm going

  544. to stay in the Old Testament for now and

  545. just remind us of that one. He got up in

  546. the synagogue, remember? And he read in

  547. the in book of Isaiah, and he read what

  548. we just read. And when he got down there

  549. to that part where the church age and

  550. the kingdom age, he stopped.

  551. And they said, "No one ever spoke like

  552. him."

  553. And this is the one. This is the servant

  554. of the Lord. This is Christ here in the

  555. Old Testament. Turn to Isaiah 61.

  556. So these are two great things that we

  557. see in the Holy Spirit going through the

  558. Old Testament is that constantly we see

  559. the spirit and the Messiah together. And

  560. then constantly we see the spirit of God

  561. with his people Israel.

  562. And um

  563. here in Isaiah 61

  564. and verse one, the spirit of of the Lord

  565. God is upon me.

  566. Because the Lord has anointed me to

  567. preach the good tidings to the meek. He

  568. has sent me to bind the brokenhearted,

  569. to proclaim liberty to the captives, the

  570. opening of the prison to those who are

  571. bound. And here it is to proclaim the

  572. acceptable year of the Lord and the day

  573. of vengeance of our God to all you that

  574. comfort and mourn to appoint unto those

  575. who mourn in Zion to give them beauty

  576. for ashes the oil of joy for mourning.

  577. So there's a you know there's a picture

  578. of the Holy Spirit is that you know this

  579. oil speaks of joy. So that's another

  580. thing the Holy Spirit does. When we have

  581. the spirit of God, we have the joy of

  582. God.

  583. So when we have we have to mourn

  584. and we never get out of that school, do

  585. we? Mourning. As long as we're on this

  586. earth,

  587. we have times of mourning.

  588. People pass away

  589. and and uh they go on without us. And

  590. we're here mourning.

  591. and the garment of praise, the spirit of

  592. heaviness that they might be called the

  593. tree of righteousness, the planting of

  594. the Lord that he might be glorified. So

  595. someday, you know, we're all going to be

  596. together and the Lord's going to be

  597. glorified

  598. uh for all the great things that he has

  599. done for us.

  600. Now, we have don't forget the one in

  601. Joel. Go to uh Joel 2.

  602. Joel chapter 2.

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  603. I'm on my way.

  604. Joel chapter 2. Now, this one,

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  605. you know, I would turn we when you study

  606. this, well, you're going to go to the

  607. book of Acts, the day of Pentecost, but

  608. we'll save that for later. Now, we're

  609. just looking at, you know, this

  610. centuries before

  611. it actually happened.

  612. And here in chapter 2 and verse 28 of

  613. Joel,

  614. this the promise of the spirit.

  615. And and when you think of the Holy

  616. Spirit, God the Spirit,

  617. think of him like we do our salvation.

  618. Did we earn our salvation? Did we work

  619. for our salvation? That's blasphemy.

  620. We were graciously given this gift of

  621. eternal life through Christ our Lord who

  622. died for

  623. and and that be true.

  624. How dare we say anything less than that

  625. to God for giving to us the Holy Spirit.

  626. It's not something we merit, not

  627. something we earn, not something we even

  628. ask for.

  629. And that can be explained to those who

  630. did ask.

  631. But God is more ready to give than we

  632. are to receive. So the Holy Spirit

  633. brings about our regeneration

  634. in the New Testament.

  635. So he's a gift

  636. and he's a you know he's and he's a

  637. promise like like salvation is a

  638. promise.

  639. The Holy Spirit is a promise. And here

  640. is this great promise. And it shall come

  641. to pass afterwards.

  642. I

  643. They say you'll ask for it. You have to

  644. earn it. Only the best, you know, fill

  645. in the blank. We're all wrong.

  646. I will pour out my spirit upon all

  647. flesh. And your sons and your daughters

  648. shall prophesy. Old men shall dream

  649. dreams. Young men will see visions and

  650. also upon the servants upon the

  651. handmmaids in those days I pour out my

  652. spirit

  653. the gift of the Holy Spirit here it's

  654. like the gift of salvation

  655. it's you know it's absolutely free

  656. and it comes upon all those who receive

  657. his son and are regenerated

  658. to each individual.

  659. You know, that's this is the amazing

  660. thing. And like I said, uh we'll talk

  661. about this in the New Testament message

  662. about the Holy Spirit.

  663. But here in the Old Testament, God says,

  664. "I'm going to pour him out

  665. uh upon all flesh."

  666. And the day will come when God will do

  667. that. For now, the only the believers

  668. get the spirit now.

  669. And uh we have plenty of verses on that.

  670. But here's the new birth in the Old

  671. Testament.

  672. You know, God's saying, "I'm going to

  673. I'm going here's what I'm going to do.

  674. I'm going to renew you.

  675. I'm going to I'm going to make sure

  676. you're born again. I'm going to make

  677. sure you're a new creation. I'm going to

  678. make sure old things pass away. And

  679. behold, all things become new." And the

  680. gifts and the calling of God are without

  681. repentance. That's what Romans says. So

  682. God doesn't take his spirit back when we

  683. sin. Aren't you glad of that? I wouldn't

  684. have had the spirit very long.

  685. It's like taking a baby and saying

  686. walking up to the parents door and

  687. saying, "Here's your baby." And you know

  688. the first mistake he's out the door.

  689. Well, you wouldn't have a baby very

  690. long, would you? But God took these

  691. things into consideration.

  692. That's what sinners need. We need mercy.

  693. We need grace. And God pours it out on

  694. us through his spirit.

  695. Um and the new birth. That's what he

  696. Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3. That's

  697. what he couldn't understand.

  698. Oh, you're a man from God. You're doing

  699. miracles. And Jesus said, "Except a man

  700. be born again

  701. cannot see the kingdom of God."

  702. Now, can the Holy Spirit be taken away

  703. in the New Testament? No. I just quoted

  704. enough verses to rest put that to rest.

  705. But in the Old Testament, yeah,

  706. you know, there were times that God took

  707. the Holy Spirit away. Um, and he doesn't

  708. do that now.

  709. And we have a lot of verses on that. But

  710. we have some Old Testament examples.

  711. Now, we we looked at the Messiah and

  712. what the Messiah was going to do and

  713. bring. Now, let's look at some

  714. individual Jews that God used, brought

  715. his spirit upon. Go to the book of

  716. Judges.

    Judges 3 chapter mention

  717. Chapter 3.

  718. We got a few here that are close

  719. together. Judges chapter 3

    Judges 3 chapter mention

  720. and verse 10.

  721. So God, the Holy Spirit came upon people

  722. here.

  723. And you know the the the New Testament

  724. is clear

  725. that

  726. you know the spirit is going to indwell

  727. us

  728. and not just come up on us or come

  729. alongside us or come over us or even to

  730. some extent David said take not your

  731. holy spirit from me. So he had he had

  732. the Holy Spirit

  733. and here we see in chapter 3 and verse

  734. 10 the spirit of the Lord came upon him

  735. and he judged Israel and they went out

  736. to war. So,

  737. you know, we see the nation drifting

  738. from God. And as the nation drifts, God

  739. God comes in as a spirit and helps his

  740. people here. Uh, and I'm sorry, it's in

  741. has to do with with war and judging

  742. Israel, but God, he protected his people

  743. through his spirit.

  744. That was something that he did. Jesus

  745. supernaturally

  746. did these things. Now look over in

  747. chapter 6,

  748. Judges

  749. in chapter 6 and verse 34. You're

  750. familiar with this one.

  751. This is our old friend Gideon.

  752. Judges chapter 6 and verse 34. It says a

    Judges 6 chapter mention

  753. similar thing here about Gideon.

  754. And the spirit of the Lord came upon

  755. Gideon and he blew the trumpet.

  756. And you know, again, another example of

  757. God the Holy Spirit

  758. coming upon the Jews here. It's been,

  759. you know, a couple of the leaders. And

  760. there's another one here in Judges. Turn

  761. over to chapter 11.

  762. Judges chap 11

  763. and verse 29.

  764. The spirit of the Lord came upon

  765. Jeepaniah

  766. and he passed over

  767. uh these areas here. So again we can see

  768. God

  769. using these men giving the spirit to

  770. these men as a guide as you know as an

  771. instructor and it just boil down to the

  772. wisdom of God. You know the fear of the

  773. Lord is the beginning of wisdom. So

  774. those who fear the Lord can count on him

  775. for wisdom.

  776. And here these men were given that. And

  777. of course, we've got one of my

  778. favorites, Samson

  779. in chapter 13

  780. and verse 25. Judges chapter 13 verse

    Judges 13:25

  781. 25.

  782. And the spirit of the Lord began to move

  783. him at the times of the camp of Dan

  784. between Zora and Echelo.

  785. And Samson went down to Tim. He saw a

  786. woman and the daughters of the

  787. Philistines and you know what happened?

  788. So here we see God even you know the

  789. Holy Spirit the spirit of God using

  790. Samson

  791. uh even though his life didn't add up to

  792. what it should. Look here in verse six.

  793. And the spirit of the Lord came mightily

  794. upon him and tore him as he would have

  795. tore a kid. And he had nothing in his

  796. hand. And he told not his father or his

  797. mother what he had done.

  798. So supernatural strength

  799. for Samson.

  800. And here in verse

  801. 19, the spirit of the Lord came upon him

  802. and he went down. So again, the spirit

  803. of the Lord on Samson, the spirit of the

  804. Lord on Gideon, you know, God sent the

  805. spirit of the Lord upon these Jews, some

  806. of these Jews for these and this

  807. particular

  808. um reason.

  809. And there's one there in verse 14,

  810. the Philistines shouted against him, and

  811. the spirit of the Lord came mighty upon

  812. him.

  813. So again, Samson an example of just

  814. supernatural strength

  815. um and understanding to do something,

  816. fulfill something, protect Israel. You

  817. know, these things God, the Holy Spirit

  818. did uh in the Old Testament. Turn over

  819. to Exodus chapter 28.

    Exodus 28 chapter mention

  820. It reminds me of the verse in Ephesians

  821. where we say, you know, he he's done

  822. abundantly above all that we could think

  823. or ask.

  824. And and that's what these uh verses

  825. remind me of that, you know, these men

  826. were in a situation and God helped them

  827. out by sending his spirit

  828. to them to help them.

  829. And here in Exodus 28

  830. verse three

  831. says here and thou shalt speak unto that

  832. that are wisehearted

  833. whom I have filled with my spirit

  834. of wisdom that they may make Aaron's

  835. garment and consecrate him that he may

  836. minister unto me in the priest's office.

  837. So, we see God doing, you know,

  838. something here that sort of sums up, you

  839. know, why God did what he did with these

  840. other men, you know, and and we have

  841. similar things like this throughout the

  842. Old Testament. Look in verse 31.

  843. There's another one here. Exodus 31

  844. and verse three.

  845. I have filled him with the spirit of God

  846. in wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and

  847. in all manner of workmanship

  848. to design skillful works to work in

  849. gold, silver, bronze, cutting of stone.

  850. It's amazing, isn't it? You know, these

  851. guys,

  852. many of them didn't go to college. Many

  853. of them didn't graduate from high

  854. school, but you know, that was way back

  855. then,

  856. but they did know more than their

  857. teachers because they served God. They

  858. were in the word of God. They they had a

  859. relationship with God. And God, he

  860. treats us like his children.

  861. It's amazing. Turn over to chapter 35.

  862. Exodus

  863. 35

  864. and verse 31.

  865. And we have a similar thing here.

  866. 35:31.

  867. and he has filled him with the spirit of

  868. God in wisdom, understanding, knowledge,

  869. and all manner of workmanship. And it

  870. says the same thing there about him as

  871. about David. You know, God God equipped

  872. these men to serve him. U and he and he

  873. sent his spirit to do these things. Turn

  874. to 1 Chronicles 28.

  875. 1 Chronicles 28.

  876. And this is David here. you know, David,

  877. and if we got time, we're going to look

  878. at that Psalm where David said, "Well,

  879. we don't have time." But David said, you

  880. know, for God not to take his Holy

  881. Spirit from him.

  882. And you know, David as well was a man

  883. that God gifted

  884. with the Holy Spirit. And here we see

  885. leadership and other things. Then David

  886. gave to Solomon his son the patterns of

  887. the porch of the temple and of the

  888. houses and of its treasuries the upper

  889. chambers its inner parlors and the place

  890. of the mercy seat where we see where God

  891. where these things came from. You know

  892. God put it on the mind of David. He put

  893. it on the head and the heart of David.

  894. the pattern of all these things

  895. in the temple and the spirit of the

  896. courts of the house of the Lord and all

  897. the chambers round about in the

  898. treasuries of the house of God and the

  899. treasuries of the dedicated thing. So

  900. here we can see David uh had the Holy

  901. Spirit indeed. Turn back to numbers

  902. 11.

  903. Numbers 11

    Numbers 11:17

  904. verse 17.

  905. Numbers 11 and verse 17.

  906. And again remember this the you know the

  907. two the two things that we were saying

  908. that are constant is the promise of the

  909. spirit upon the Messiah. In the

  910. meantime, God's spirit coming to the

  911. nation of Israel

  912. and to the leadership

  913. to help them to serve God and to know

  914. God and to be comforted by God.

  915. And here we see verse 16.

  916. And the Lord said to Moses, "Gather unto

  917. me 70 men and the elders of Israel, whom

  918. you know to be the elders of the people,

  919. and officers over them, and bring them

  920. to the tabernacle of the congregation,

  921. that they may stand there with thee. And

  922. I will come down, and I will talk with

  923. thee, and I will take the spirit which

  924. is upon thee, and I will put it upon

  925. them, and they will bear the burden of

  926. the people, and you shall not do it

  927. alone." So you see here the the

  928. compassion

  929. of God, the care of God. And you know,

  930. God's like Moses, there's no way you can

  931. handle this. You need help, you know,

  932. and get the best men. And then once you

  933. get the best men, you all get together

  934. and I'm going to put my spirit upon them

  935. that they might that they might serve

  936. me. And then he says in verse 18,

  937. sanctify yourself. You know, so God's

  938. concerned about our, you know, our being

  939. dirty and getting dirty and we do that

  940. when we go through this world. But

  941. that's why we confess our sins. That's

  942. why God has, you know, given us the

  943. blood of Christ to take away all of our

  944. sin. And and sin, you know, it holds us

  945. back from serving God. We want to be, as

  946. second Timothy says, we want to be a

  947. clean vessel

  948. unto God to be used.

  949. And no wonder here he says it with Moses

  950. before the cross, before Calvary. Moses,

  951. sanctify yourself. Get your men

  952. together. You know, the best ones you

  953. have, and I'm going to come down and put

  954. my spirit upon them. Look over in

  955. Numbers 27.

  956. Numbers

  957. 27

  958. and verse 18.

  959. Numbers 27:18. And the Lord said to

    Numbers 27:18

  960. Moses, "Take thee Joshua the son of Nun,

  961. a man in whom is the spirit,

  962. and li lay thine hands upon him."

  963. So here again we see the Holy Spirit, we

  964. see consecration, we see the setting

  965. apart of people to serve uh God and to

  966. get to know God in the Old Testament uh

  967. before the cross. Now

  968. you know to to know God that's that's

  969. the greatest thing isn't it?

  970. What's our greatest thing? What Jesus

  971. tell his disciples,

  972. Lord, the spirits are subject to it. Or,

  973. Lord, you gave me a wonderful life. I've

  974. got I got a wonderful house. I got a

  975. nice car. I got a great wife. I got a

  976. kids. You know, like, thank you, Lord.

  977. Thank you, Lord. Well, the greatest

  978. thing is that we know God. What Jeremiah

  979. said. God said,

  980. greatest thing is you know me. And

  981. that's still the greatest thing

  982. is for us to know God.

  983. And God has helped us to know him. And

  984. in Nehemiah

    Nehemiah 9 chapter mention

  985. chapter 9,

  986. I'm a long ways off. I'm on my way.

  987. Nehemiah

  988. chapter nine.

  989. And you know to have the wisdom of God

  990. is the greatest thing.

  991. You know the greatest thing is that we

  992. have God and when we get God then we get

  993. his word.

  994. That's the greatest thing and that's

  995. what he gave us the spirit for.

  996. Gave us a spirit in the Old Testament to

  997. know him. He's he's given us a spirit in

  998. the New Testament to know him. We'll

  999. look at that at another time.

1000. But here in Nehemiah chapter 9 verse 20,

    Nehemiah 9:20

1001. thou gavest also thy good spirit to

1002. instruct them. See, God gives. We don't

1003. ask, you know, we don't bargain. We

  1004. don't merit.

1005. Having the spirit's like having

  1006. salvation. It's a gift

1007. for God to instruct us to help us and uh

1008. you know so we might have food

  1009. to eat.

1010. Now look at verse 30.

1011. Yet many years did thou forbear them and

1012. testified against them by thy spirit and

1013. by thy prophets. So you see God's

1014. longsuffering. He wants us to know him

1015. uh in a greater way. And here's a good

1016. example that you know those who refuse

  1017. God, you're refusing a lie.

1018. Verse 30, he says that that I would that

  1019. they would listen

1020. and that you gave it to them and to the

1021. hand of your people in your land. So

1022. that's why God sent the spirit. That's

1023. why God sent his leaders

1024. uh and and these great men that uh knew

1025. God to others that they might know God

  1026. in a great way.

1027. Let's close in a word of prayer.

1028. Father, we thank you for your word.

1029. Holy Spirit, we thank you for your word.

1030. We see in the beginning you were there

  1031. brooding over the creation,

1032. breathing life into Adam, making us in

  1033. the image of God,

  1034. making us a a soul.

1035. Thank you for these things. And then on

1036. top of that, now we can know God in a

1037. greater way through his word.

1038. And we thank you for your word. Thank

1039. you for the Holy Spirit that instructs

1040. us and shows us these great things,

1041. these deep things of God, as Paul puts

  1042. it in Corinthians.

1043. We thank you for these deep things.

1044. Help us to grow in grace and the

  1045. knowledge of you.

1046. And indeed, we have a triune God,

1047. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We can't

1048. understand this book any other way. And

  1049. yet, you're one God.

1050. So, we thank you. You're greater than

1051. us. And we worship you and we praise you

1052. for this great work of redemption you've

1053. done on our behalf in Jesus name. Amen.

  1054. >> Hi, Steve.

  1055. >> Morning Martha.

1056. You know what's been going on?

  1057. >> The 25th.

  1058. >> That's next week.

  1059. >> Yeah. Next week.

1060. >> Lord, as we go from this place,

  1061. loving you more,

  1062. trusting you more.

1063. May the power of your love and the light

1064. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1065. world as we go from this
