  1. So let me start by just thinking a little bit about what good fear means and is intended for us.

  2. And I think, let me just start by a little questionnaire, a little quiz for everybody here this morning.

  3. There are fears I think we're very used to, have names that perhaps we're familiar with as well,

  4. common phobias that maybe we experience or those around us experience.

  5. So if I was to say to you the phrase claustrophobia, what would that be the fear of?

  6. Anybody know?

  7. Claustrophobia?

  8. The claustrophobia is a common one.

  9. About 5% apparently of the population suffers from claustrophobia or the fear of confined spaces.

  10. Here's another one which you probably know, arachnophobia.

  11. Arachnophobia, fear of spiders, that's right, another well-known one.

  12. Well, how about this one?

  13. Perhaps a little bit more unusual, not a name you necessarily know, but ophidiophobia.

  14. Ophidiophobia.

  15. Anybody know that one?

  16. Long words.

  17. No, it could be.

  18. No.

  19. Actually very close to fear of spiders.

  20. Ophidiophobia is the fear of snakes.

  21. And then last long word, teromahanophobia.

  22. Teromahanophobia.

  23. Anyone can guess what that's?

  24. That was the most complicated one I could find.

  25. Teromahanophobia.

  26. If you had that, you're very unlikely to get on an airplane because that is the fear of flying.

  27. Fancy words, perhaps ones we've never heard of before, but all fears, I think we can understand

  28. where the basis of them comes from.

  29. They all have a potential of risk, maybe danger or harm or pain to us.

  30. And God has created us with this capacity to fear so that we understand when there is a threat of danger or under certain circumstances that we might fear.

  31. And it is meant to act as an alarm bell, a kind of a sensory system to alert us to danger.

  32. Good fear is meant to function to protect us so that we avoid danger and enjoy all the goodness of God's creation.

  33. So, for example, if you're out hiking and terrible storm comes down, good fear would lead you to find shelter, maybe away from the risk of falling trees and flooding rivers.

  34. Maybe if you're out camping as well, you're toasting marshmallows over a campfire.

  35. Good fear warns you not to pick up the marshmallow that falls into the fire through fear of burning your hand.

  36. As Sean said, I've got seven kids.

  37. Three of them are now driving.

  38. One is still learning.

  39. But in their driving instruction, they've all went through classes with their instructors early on where they were taught to focus on road safety

  40. and were given lessons about why they should wear their seatbelts and why you should never text and drive

  41. so that they develop a good fear that keeps them and others on the road safe when they're driving.

  42. Now, Jesus, of course, is God's son, our creator.

  43. He knows how good fear is meant to function in us as God's creatures.

  44. And yet no one knows us better than Christ Jesus for how the fall has affected us,

  45. how sin has distorted what God has called good and how sin makes good things bad.

  46. And that includes our sense of fear and how it is meant to function in our lives.

  47. And this morning, in the particular context of our passage, we're going to think around the application,

  48. particularly of fear in terms of fear of man, although it really applies to any fear.

  49. But in the context this morning, particularly the fear of man.

  50. And so that leads us to our second point.

  51. Very quickly, we get to what Jesus says to us about how good fear has gone bad.

  52. By its proper definition, a fear becomes a phobia when it's out of proportion to or it's excessive

  53. compared to the actual danger presented to us.

  54. Now, there may well be very genuine mental or emotional health issues associated with why a person would have an elevated sense of fear

  55. that's out of proportion to the actual danger.

  56. And there are ways to help to address those issues of mental or emotional distress.

  57. But in our passage this morning, Jesus addresses his disciples and he addresses us at a far more deeper level,

  58. at a level of spiritual level that applies to each and every one of us here this morning.

  59. He speaks to our beliefs and addresses how sin distorts our sense of fear.

  60. He addresses how good fear has gone bad.

  61. We see in verse 4, he's addressing a fear that is bigger than the actual danger.

  62. He says,

  63. Do not fear those who kill the body and after that have nothing more that they can do.

  64. Now, if you're familiar with Jesus' teachings, he often says things in a way to provoke attention, provoke response,

  65. because the honest answer to that verse alone should be something like,

  66. Jesus, what are you talking about?

  67. It does seem entirely reasonable, doesn't it, to fear someone who's threatening to kill you?

  68. Didn't we just talk about examples of how good fear is meant to function to protect us from danger?

  69. Surely someone threatening to kill us is something where we are meant to rightly fear,

  70. and that's meant to function to protect us.

  71. Well, of course, Jesus knows very well what he's saying.

  72. And we need to understand his words in their full context.

  73. It's hinted at in the second half of that verse and developed into the following verse in verse 5.

  74. So, again, he says,

  75. Do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do.

  76. What more is there that they can do, Jesus?

  77. He goes on to tell us.

  78. He says,

  79. But I warn you whom to fear.

  80. Fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.

  81. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

  82. The reason Jesus tells his disciples not to fear those who can only kill the body is because it's a distorted fear.

  83. He's addressing this good fear gone bad.

  84. It's distorted in two ways.

  85. It's distorted in that it takes being killed and elevates it above what is appropriate,

  86. making physical death the absolute and ultimate terrible thing.

  87. And at the same time, it's a distorted fear because it takes what is really the absolute and ultimate terrible thing,

  88. being called to judgment before God,

  89. being found guilty of breaking his laws,

  90. and being cast into the eternal agony of hell.

  91. Taking that truly ultimate terrible thing and reducing it,

  92. reducing God, in fact,

  93. reducing eternity to something less serious, less important,

  94. than what can happen to us in the here and now.

  95. And Jesus is saying to his disciples at this point of his ministry

  96. because he knows the threat of death for him is looming ever closer.

  97. And because of that, it is looming ever closer for those who would choose to follow him.

  98. Just before our passage this morning, at the end of Luke chapter 11,

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  99. Jesus has been at a party.

  100. He's been invited to a party, a dinner party at the house of one of the religious leaders,

  101. one of the Pharisees.

  102. And Jesus doesn't hold back in condemning his host and his other guests

  103. for hypocrisy and self-righteousness

  104. and for ignoring and condemning the Old Testament prophets.

  105. And chapter 11 ends by saying,

  106. As he went away from there, as he left the party,

  107. the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard

  108. and to provoke him to speak about many things,

  109. lying in wait for him to catch him in something he might say.

  110. And then chapter 12 starts,

  111. In the meantime, when so many thousands of people had gathered together

  112. that they were trampling one another,

  113. he began to essentially teach his disciples.

  114. So our verses this morning are in the context of a huge crowd

  115. gathered around Jesus and his disciples.

  116. And no doubt in such a large crowd,

  117. there were some of these Pharisees among them

  118. or those who were perhaps loyal to the Pharisees,

  119. those who would be looking to put an end to Jesus

  120. and to put an end to any who would hold to his teaching.

  121. And under those circumstances,

  122. Jesus presents this loving warning to his disciples,

  123. to his friends, to us today,

  124. not to fear what man might do to you,

  125. to let that get distorted,

  126. to not to let good fear go bad

  127. and elevate fear of man over the fear of God.

  128. For the disciples,

  129. the prospect of being killed

  130. was very real for them.

  131. And more than likely,

  132. all but John and Judas of the apostles

  133. were martyred for their faith.

  134. And throughout church history,

  135. from the time of the scriptures through to today,

  136. disciples of Jesus Christ

  137. have faced being killed for their faith.

  138. There remains many parts of the world

  139. where being a Christian,

  140. simply standing to be counted as a follower of Christ

  141. and seeking to be obedient to his teachings

  142. is enough to be killed at the hands of men.

  143. And yet for you and I living in America currently,

  144. we are unlikely to face deadly opposition

  145. for our faith,

  146. for the sake of Christ.

  147. But I know for myself,

  148. I don't need the threat of being killed

  149. for my sinful broken heart

  150. to wrestle with distorting the fear of man,

  151. to distorting what thought

  152. or what man might do to me and to us

  153. and to elevate the fear of man

  154. and allow it to occupy a place of dominance

  155. in our lives

  156. that is the rightful place

  157. for the fear of the Lord alone.

  158. And just to be clear again,

  159. the fear of man

  160. isn't limited to distorting fear

  161. about what somebody may do to us as a Christian.

  162. This isn't a unique fear actually to just Christians.

  163. Once we distort or elevate the fear of man

  164. above the fear of God,

  165. once that good fear has gone bad for us,

  166. from then on we place undue focus

  167. on what others might do to us

  168. or think about us,

  169. not only for being a Christian

  170. but for anything else.

  171. When good fear has gone bad,

  172. we are submitted to things,

  173. we are preoccupied with things

  174. that God intended to us

  175. to be only submitted and preoccupied with him.

  176. This is true of any distorted fear.

  177. A distorted fear of man

  178. will affect how we bear the name Christian

  179. when it's unpopular with those around us,

  180. but it may also,

  181. a distorted fear may also affect

  182. what dominates our thoughts

  183. and our actions

  184. when we're around our friends,

  185. around our peers,

  186. our colleagues,

  187. so that we act

  188. or we speak for their approval

  189. and to avoid their rejection

  190. regarding what sports team we follow,

  191. maybe what clothes or shoes we wear,

  192. maybe what movies or television shows

  193. we keep up with

  194. and what computer games we play,

  195. what car we drive,

  196. what neighborhood we live in.

  197. The list goes on and on and on.

  198. And of course,

  199. we live in an age

  200. where social media

  201. can fuel that distorted fear

  202. ever so easily

  203. because we see very clearly

  204. what others think

  205. because they tell us

  206. through likes and comments.

  207. Fear of man

  208. affects how we think about

  209. our school,

  210. our work,

  211. our job,

  212. so that we can pursue success

  213. and praise

  214. from our professors,

  215. our teachers,

  216. our parents,

  217. our boss

  218. or it affects

  219. how we seek to cover up

  220. and make excuses

  221. for our mistakes

  222. and our failures.

  223. One Christian counselor,

  224. Ed Welch,

  225. said,

  226. fear of man

  227. is such a part

  228. of our human fabric

  229. that we should check

  230. for a pulse

  231. if someone denies it.

  232. And I think he's accurate

  233. in that assessment.

  234. So we would do well

  235. to listen to Jesus' words

  236. of warning

  237. and counsel

  238. and counsel

  239. in this passage

  240. so that we can recognize

  241. and confess

  242. before God

  243. where good fear

  244. has gone bad

  245. in our lives

  246. and in our hearts

  247. and so that we can receive

  248. his cure

  249. for bad fear

  250. and the cure

  251. that Jesus offers

  252. to us.

  253. So let's look at that now,

  254. the cure

  255. for bad fear.

  256. And before we dive

  257. into the passage

  258. and the scriptures

  259. to see

  260. what the right fear

  261. is that Jesus

  262. offers to us,

  263. I think it's important

  264. that we recognize

  265. and call out

  266. a couple of bad cures

  267. for good fear

  268. gone bad

  269. that we might consider

  270. taking or have

  271. presented to us

  272. because there are

  273. many alternatives

  274. out there.

  275. first of all,

  276. if the fear

  277. of man

  278. or fear

  279. of what man

  280. may do

  281. to us

  282. is,

  283. if we accept

  284. that as wrong

  285. thinking,

  286. that it lifts up

  287. man

  288. and brings

  289. God

  290. down,

  291. then the cure

  292. for that bad

  293. thinking,

  294. for good fear

  295. gone bad,

  296. must not be

  297. to replace

  298. wrong thinking

  299. with just a different

  300. sort of wrong

  301. thinking.

  302. and there's

  303. a very particular

  304. example that I want

  305. to bring to you

  306. this morning

  307. and it's the example

  308. of the trust

  309. in yourself

  310. mentality.

  311. Don't be afraid,

  312. you can do it.

  313. Now don't get me wrong,

  314. there can be

  315. genuine

  316. and valid

  317. encouragement

  318. in those words.

  319. I've used them

  320. with my children

  321. many times

  322. when they've been

  323. hesitant or frightened

  324. to do something

  325. that I know

  326. they're capable of

  327. if they try

  328. and apply themselves.

  329. But there is

  330. danger

  331. if that is

  332. the only thing

  333. that is repeatedly

  334. said

  335. to fight

  336. fear.

  337. You can do it,

  338. just try harder,

  339. trust in yourself,

  340. be harder

  341. working,

  342. be stronger,

  343. be smarter,

  344. be better looking

  345. and you won't

  346. have anything

  347. to fear anymore.

  348. That's replacing

  349. one form

  350. of wrong thinking

  351. with another

  352. form of wrong

  353. thinking.

  354. It's a lie

  355. and Jesus' words

  356. expose it

  357. for a lie.

  358. Sure,

  359. doing those things

  360. may feel like

  361. they help

  362. to some degree

  363. for some amount

  364. of time.

  365. You may become

  366. stronger than

  367. those around you,

  368. you might become

  369. smarter or better

  370. dressed than

  371. those around you

  372. but you won't

  373. remain that way

  374. forever.

  375. Jesus deliberately

  376. takes us to the

  377. ultimate and the

  378. final reality

  379. that everyone

  380. will face,

  381. death

  382. and judgment

  383. before God

  384. to help us

  385. to get our

  386. fear in

  387. perspective

  388. and see the

  389. cure that we

  390. truly need.

  391. Trusting in things

  392. that really

  393. cannot save you

  394. reminds me of

  395. something that I did

  396. when I was a

  397. little kid.

  398. the very first

  399. bedroom that I

  400. have memories

  401. of as a boy

  402. growing up

  403. had this

  404. fantastic wallpaper

  405. all the way

  406. around the room.

  407. My parents put

  408. this up and it

  409. had Superman

  410. wallpaper

  411. and it had

  412. this reoccurring

  413. images of

  414. Superman all

  415. the way around

  416. the room

  417. all in various

  418. different action

  419. poses, heroic

  420. poses and it

  421. certainly fueled

  422. my fascination

  423. with superheroes

  424. but I remember

  425. that I developed

  426. this rather

  427. particular

  428. childlike habit

  429. of dealing

  430. with fear

  431. because of my

  432. Superman wallpaper.

  433. My bed

  434. in that room

  435. was right up

  436. against one

  437. of the walls

  438. and at night

  439. time if I ever

  440. was frightened

  441. whatever it may

  442. have been

  443. maybe I heard

  444. a bump

  445. or a noise

  446. in the house

  447. or maybe I was

  448. worried about

  449. monsters under

  450. the bed

  451. whatever it was

  452. I developed

  453. this pattern

  454. of I'd

  455. lie right up

  456. against one

  457. of the walls

  458. and I'd think

  459. to myself

  460. I'm going

  461. to be okay

  462. Superman

  463. is all around

  464. me and he

  465. will protect

  466. me

  467. and that's

  468. a sweet

  469. childlike

  470. thing

  471. but it is

  472. ultimately

  473. quite useless

  474. because what

  475. was going

  476. to happen

  477. if any

  478. of those

  479. things that

  480. I was frightened

  481. of actually

  482. turned into

  483. a material

  484. danger

  485. or threat

  486. where was

  487. my hope

  488. truly placed

  489. in those

  490. circumstances

  491. I was trusting

  492. in my

  493. wallpaper

  494. and Jesus

  495. offers us

  496. something far

  497. more substantial

  498. I think you'll

  499. appreciate

  500. than wallpaper

  501. this morning

  502. but it's a

  503. silly example

  504. to show how

  505. we can

  506. take wrong

  507. thinking

  508. and comfort

  509. ourselves

  510. with other

  511. wrong thinking

  512. if we are

  513. not careful

  514. in the same

  515. way Jesus

  516. challenges us

  517. with his

  518. words to make

  519. sure we are

  520. not dealing

  521. with distorted

  522. fear in the

  523. wrong way

  524. in a way

  525. which is

  526. ultimately

  527. still going

  528. to let

  529. us down

  530. you can

  531. do many

  532. good things

  533. you can

  534. work out

  535. you can

  536. study hard

  537. you can

  538. help other

  539. people

  540. you can

  541. have a

  542. nice family

  543. you can

  544. have a

  545. well-paying

  546. job

  547. but Jesus

  548. does not

  549. intend for

  550. us to

  551. trust in

  552. these things

  553. to protect

  554. us through

  555. life

  556. and they

  557. will not

  558. protect us

  559. at the

  560. end of

  561. life

  562. either

  563. one more

  564. error

  565. before we

  566. get to

  567. Jesus

  568. cure

  569. for

  570. good

  571. fear

  572. gone

  573. bad

  574. it's

  575. another

  576. form

  577. of

  578. replacing

  579. wrong

  580. thinking

  581. with

  582. wrong

  583. thinking

  584. dealing

  585. with

  586. this

  587. distorted

  588. fear

  589. of

  590. man

  591. by

  592. trying

  593. to

  594. go

  595. to

  596. the

  597. other

  598. extreme

  599. not

  600. giving

  601. any

  602. care

  603. or

  604. any

  605. thought

  606. to

  607. the

  608. opinions

  609. of

  610. others

  611. on the

  612. face

  613. of it

  614. that

  615. might

  616. sound

  617. like

  618. a

  619. good

  620. idea

  621. right

  622. if

  623. I

  624. shouldn't

  625. elevate

  626. other

  627. people

  628. above

  629. God

  630. so

  631. that I

  632. fear

  633. what

  634. they

  635. might

  636. do

  637. to

  638. me

  639. or

  640. what

  641. they

  642. might

  643. think

  644. about

  645. me

  646. then

  647. perhaps

  648. I

  649. can

  650. deal

  651. with

  652. caring

  653. about

  654. them

  655. too

  656. much

  657. by

  658. not

  659. caring

  660. at

  661. all

  662. about

  663. what

  664. they

  665. think

  666. I'll

  667. just

  668. do

  669. my

  670. own

  671. thing

  672. I'll

  673. do

  674. my

  675. own

  676. thing

  677. my

  678. own

  679. way

  680. so

  681. I

  682. don't

  683. care

  684. what

  685. you

  686. think

  687. what

  688. you

  689. say

  690. whether

  691. you're

  692. my

  693. peers

  694. my

  695. parents

  696. my

  697. professors

  698. my

  699. pastors

  700. I'm

  701. not

  702. going

  703. to

  704. fear

  705. you

  706. in

  707. fact

  708. I

  709. don't

  710. really

  711. care

  712. what

  713. you

  714. think

  715. or

  716. what

  717. you

  718. do

  719. of

  720. course

  721. the

  722. problem

  723. with

  724. that

  725. approach

  726. is

  727. that

  728. Jesus

  729. says

  730. we

  731. are

  732. to

  733. truly

  734. care

  735. appropriately

  736. care

  737. about

  738. others

  739. about

  740. what

  741. others

  742. think

  743. and

  744. what

  745. others

  746. do

  747. in

  748. humility

  749. we

  750. are

  751. to

  752. count

  753. others

  754. more

  755. significant

  756. than

  757. ourselves

  758. and

  759. for

  760. certain

  761. people

  762. in

  763. particular

  764. roles

  765. that

  766. God

  767. has

  768. placed

  769. around

  770. us

  771. and

  772. above

  773. us

  774. honoring

  775. God

  776. means

  777. honoring

  778. people

  779. in

  780. roles

  781. of

  782. authority

  783. that

  784. God

  785. has

  786. placed

  787. over

  788. us

  789. so

  790. Jesus

  791. isn't

  792. suggesting

  793. we

  794. deal

  795. with

  796. a

  797. distorted

  798. fear

  799. by

  800. deliberately

  801. not

  802. caring

  803. about

  804. what

  805. anybody

  806. else

  807. says

  808. around

  809. us

  810. so

  811. what

  812. is

  813. the

  814. right

  815. cure

  816. for

  817. bad

  818. fear

  819. that

  820. Jesus

  821. is

  822. offering

  823. we've

  824. seen

  825. it

  826. already

  827. in

  828. verse

  829. 5

  830. the

  831. right

  832. cure

  833. for

  834. bad

  835. fear

  836. is

  837. the

  838. right

  839. fear

  840. of

  841. God

  842. again

  843. he says

  844. I will

  845. warn you

  846. whom

  847. to

  848. fear

  849. fear

  850. him

  851. who

  852. after

  853. he

  854. has

  855. killed

  856. has

  857. authority

  858. to

  859. cast

  860. into

  861. hell

  862. yes

  863. I

  864. tell

  865. you

  866. fear

  867. him

  868. may

  869. not

  870. his

  871. will

  872. fear

  873. will

  874. how he will use this power and this authority.

  875. Scripture has made it abundantly clear to us, plain to us,

  876. who God is, how he is holy and just.

  877. He doesn't randomly assign people to hell,

  878. nor does he make wrong judgments ever.

  879. In fact, the gospel of Jesus Christ starts with the bad news that all of us,

  880. every single one of us in this room here this morning,

  881. we all deserve to be subject to God's authority and judgment that we see here in verse 5.

  882. We don't deserve to be in God's presence.

  883. We deserve to be cast into hell because of our rejection

  884. and our rebellion against him and against his ways.

  885. And yet, the gospel tells us this amazing truth,

  886. that this terrible judgment that each of us faced

  887. Jesus has taken it upon himself on the cross

  888. so that everyone who trusts that Jesus' death in their place

  889. satisfies God's judgment upon us.

  890. So that you are forgiven of your sin and your offenses against God,

  891. including our distortion of putting other fears,

  892. fear of man above the fear of God,

  893. fearing creation rather than the creator.

  894. If you've done that this morning,

  895. if you're a Christian,

  896. this fearsome God no longer calls you his enemies,

  897. but he calls you his children.

  898. Which brings us to the last verses of our passage,

  899. verses 6 and 7.

  900. If verses 4 and 5

  901. sound like Jesus is speaking quite in harsh extremes

  902. to help us see through our distorted fear of man

  903. over the fear of God,

  904. then verses 6 and 7

  905. sound almost humorous in their gentleness

  906. and their tenderness towards us.

  907. He says,

  908. These two verses

  909. that help us see the gospel cure for bad fear

  910. because they tell us two profound truths

  911. about the fearsome and almighty God whom we worship.

  912. It tells us that God knows you completely.

  913. And it tells us that God cares for you deeply.

  914. So much of the distorted fear of man

  915. centers around being exposed.

  916. Perhaps being exposed to physical harm,

  917. but also being exposed to shame,

  918. to ridicule,

  919. to condemnation,

  920. for people to see us as we truly are,

  921. to know our darkest secrets,

  922. our most embarrassing and shameful moments.

  923. Jesus' words connect to that distorted fear

  924. and they correct that fear.

  925. We may be able to go through life

  926. hiding our dirty laundry, as it were,

  927. from others around us

  928. so they don't see.

  929. But God sees.

  930. God sees you completely.

  931. And He knows you completely,

  932. down to the hairs on your head.

  933. Now, as time goes on,

  934. for some of us, like myself,

  935. that's an easier job for God than others.

  936. But He knows us completely.

  937. If you were to pour out your heart

  938. in complete honesty before God,

  939. confessing all your thoughts

  940. and all of your feelings,

  941. warts and all,

  942. nothing held back,

  943. God would not respond to you,

  944. wow,

  945. I had no idea that that's who you really were.

  946. I need a time out.

  947. I need to reevaluate what's going on here

  948. as to who you are.

  949. That is not what God would say.

  950. Rather, He might say something like,

  951. thank you.

  952. Thank you for being honest.

  953. Now, would you like me to tell you

  954. what you missed?

  955. He knows you.

  956. He knows you completely.

  957. He knows the hairs on your head.

  958. He knows the freckles on your face.

  959. He knows the first thought you had this morning.

  960. He'll know the last thought you have

  961. before you go to bed tonight.

  962. He sees everything,

  963. knows everything about you,

  964. and rather than push you away,

  965. He draws you close to Himself in Christ.

  966. Because of the cross,

  967. Jesus has dealt with everything

  968. that caused God to reject you.

  969. And now He calls you to Himself

  970. as His child.

  971. He loves you.

  972. If you are a Christian,

  973. He's drawn you to Himself.

  974. He knows you completely,

  975. and God cares for you deeply.

  976. God cares for the sparrow, Jesus says.

  977. So small and so fragile,

  978. even though it's of little worth.

  979. How much more is the argument

  980. Jesus is making here?

  981. How much more will He care for those

  982. who are made in His own image?

  983. God loved the world so much

  984. that He gave His only Son,

  985. not because that was a fair price

  986. for what we're worth,

  987. but that that was the price

  988. to redeem sinners,

  989. like you and me,

  990. out of bondage to slavery,

  991. bondage to good fear gone bad,

  992. out of His own love

  993. with which He loved us.

  994. Father, Son, Holy Spirit,

  995. our God chose to pay that price.

  996. That price is what He cares for you.

  997. The gospel is the cure for bad fear,

  998. for distorted fear.

  999. And as we're confronted with the enormity

1000. of the Almighty God's love for us,

  1001. the cross declares

1002. how He knows us completely,

  1003. warts and all,

1004. and yet cares for us deeply

1005. to give us His Son,

1006. to bring us to Himself.

1007. And now He's given us His Holy Spirit

1008. to live with us and within us,

  1009. working in us power,

1010. the power of the resurrection

1011. to bring renewed hearts and minds

1012. that orient around right fears,

  1013. good fears,

  1014. appropriate fear of man,

1015. and appropriate fear of God

  1016. for who He is.

1017. There are two very simple words

1018. in our passage this morning

1019. which we can easily overlook.

1020. We find them at the beginning

  1021. in verse 4

  1022. that are profound

1023. if we understand them correctly.

  1024. Jesus calls those

  1025. who are His disciples

  1026. my friends.

  1027. My friends.

  1028. If you're a Christian,

  1029. Jesus Christ,

  1030. the Son of God,

1031. second person of the Trinity,

1032. the one who has the power

  1033. and authority

1034. to lay down His life

  1035. and the power

1036. to bring it back up again,

  1037. this Jesus

  1038. calls you

  1039. my friend.

  1040. When we grasp hold

  1041. of these truths,

  1042. we can affirm

  1043. and live out

  1044. the words we see

  1045. the Apostle Paul say

1046. at the end of Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

1047. I think we have these

  1048. to project as well.

1049. We have this recorded for us.

1050. What then shall we say

  1051. to these things,

1052. to any of these fears

  1053. that may be distorted

  1054. in our lives?

1055. If God is for us,

1056. who can be against us?

1057. He who did not spare

  1058. His own Son

  1059. but gave Him up

  1060. for us all,

1061. how will He not also

  1062. along with Him

  1063. graciously give us

  1064. all things?

1065. Who shall bring any charge

  1066. against God's elect?

  1067. It is God

  1068. who justifies,

  1069. who is to condemn.

  1070. Christ Jesus

1071. is the one who died.

  1072. More than that,

  1073. who was raised,

1074. who is at the right hand

  1075. of God,

  1076. who indeed

  1077. is interceding for us.

  1078. Who shall separate us

1079. from the love of Christ?

  1080. Shall tribulation

  1081. or distress

  1082. or persecution

  1083. or famine

  1084. or nakedness

  1085. or danger

  1086. or sword

  1087. or any other fear

  1088. that you may have?

  1089. As it is written,

  1090. for your sake

  1091. we are being killed

  1092. all the day long.

  1093. We are regarded

  1094. as sheep

  1095. to be slaughtered.

  1096. No.

  1097. In all these things

  1098. we are more

  1099. than conquerors

  1100. through Him

  1101. who loved us.

  1102. For I am sure

  1103. that neither death

  1104. nor life

  1105. nor angels

  1106. nor rulers

  1107. nor things present

  1108. nor things to come

  1109. nor powers

  1110. nor height

  1111. nor depth

  1112. nor anything else

  1113. in all creation

  1114. will be able

  1115. to separate us

  1116. from the love

  1117. of God

  1118. in Christ Jesus

  1119. our Lord.

  1120. When the gospel

  1121. of Jesus Christ

  1122. has taken hold

  1123. of you

  1124. and you have

  1125. taken hold

  1126. of the gospel

  1127. the power of God

1128. is at work in you

  1129. to cure you

  1130. of good fear

  1131. gone bad

  1132. to heal you

  1133. of distorted fears

  1134. so that you can

  1135. mean and say

  1136. those words

  1137. of Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1138. for yourself.

  1139. God wants that

  1140. for you

1141. and I want to help you

  1142. with just a few

  1143. practical suggestions

1144. of how we can grow

  1145. in applying that fear

  1146. so let me close

  1147. with the cure

  1148. in practice.

  1149. First and foremost

  1150. the cure

  1151. of the gospel

  1152. only works

  1153. if you have

  1154. received it.

  1155. You cannot take

  1156. the cure

  1157. for your fear

  1158. problem

  1159. if you have not

  1160. received the cure

  1161. for your sin problem

1162. and if you are here

  1163. this morning

  1164. and haven't

  1165. received Christ

  1166. as your savior

  1167. then I'm so glad

  1168. you're here

1169. so glad that I get

  1170. to speak with you

  1171. this morning

  1172. and I'd love to

  1173. talk to you more

  1174. about how

  1175. you can receive

  1176. Christ

  1177. and his life

  1178. his death

  1179. his resurrection

  1180. for you

  1181. so that you might

  1182. know forgiveness

  1183. and freedom

  1184. from God's judgment

  1185. and wrath

  1186. to come

  1187. and then

  1188. you can start

  1189. working

  1190. in placing

  1191. the fear

  1192. of man

  1193. in right proportion

  1194. to the fear

  1195. of God

  1196. if you have

  1197. received Christ

  1198. then

  1199. we apply

  1200. this truth

  1201. of putting

  1202. good fear

  1203. into its right

  1204. place

  1205. through practice

  1206. simple things

  1207. things I'm sure

  1208. you've heard

  1209. before

  1210. but let me

  1211. just give

  1212. some specific

  1213. application

  1214. the first

  1215. is in reading

  1216. God's word

  1217. the Bible

  1218. is a lifetime

  1219. supply

  1220. of meditation

  1221. and reflection

  1222. that works

  1223. to correct

  1224. distorted fear

  1225. to put the fear

  1226. of creation

  1227. in its proper

  1228. place

  1229. and the fear

  1230. of our creator

  1231. in his proper

  1232. place

  1233. but I want

  1234. to add

  1235. that the Bible

  1236. isn't our only

  1237. input

  1238. into our lives

  1239. and we need

  1240. to think

  1241. carefully

  1242. about our diet

  1243. because you may

  1244. be reading

  1245. your Bible

  1246. but what else

  1247. are you reading

  1248. and how is that

  1249. informing

  1250. your fears

  1251. the world

  1252. in so many

  1253. different ways

  1254. is telling you

  1255. what to fear

  1256. and it's not

  1257. telling you

  1258. to fear God

  1259. through the news

  1260. through social

  1261. media

  1262. through conversations

  1263. with friends

  1264. at school

  1265. or work

  1266. or college

  1267. there are

  1268. subtle

  1269. and there are

  1270. distinct

  1271. voices telling us

  1272. to fear this

  1273. fear that

  1274. fear the other

  1275. all at the expense

  1276. of fearing

  1277. God

  1278. and you and I

  1279. are taking that in

  1280. every single day

  1281. and honestly

  1282. it is foolish

  1283. and it is arrogant

  1284. for us to think

  1285. that we can resist

  1286. that influence

  1287. if we are not

  1288. regularly taking in

  1289. and balancing it

  1290. with the word

  1291. of God

  1292. speaking correctly

  1293. so that we can

  1294. distinguish

  1295. distorted fears

  1296. from accurate fears

  1297. so I want to

  1298. encourage you

  1299. feed on God's

  1300. word

  1301. I just read

  1302. recently actually

  1303. the Bible has

  1304. over 365

  1305. times where

  1306. we are called

  1307. to fear

  1308. not

  1309. that's more than

  1310. one a day

  1311. that might be

  1312. an outstanding

  1313. use of your

  1314. devotional time

  1315. just to

  1316. chart that

  1317. through

  1318. each day

  1319. reflecting where

  1320. God says

  1321. fear not

  1322. and what

  1323. grounds he

  1324. gives you

  1325. for that

  1326. but feed

  1327. on God's

  1328. word

  1329. being aware

  1330. that you're

  1331. already feeding

  1332. on other

  1333. things

  1334. so consider

  1335. your diet

  1336. carefully

  1337. second application

  1338. I would encourage

  1339. you to pray

  1340. and to invite

  1341. prayer

  1342. specifically

  1343. invite prayer

  1344. for where

  1345. distorted fear

  1346. applies and is

  1347. lived out in

  1348. your life

  1349. and we have

  1350. before us

  1351. an example

  1352. in the

  1353. apostle Paul

  1354. he says to

  1355. the church

  1356. in Ephesus

  1357. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  1358. chapter 6

  1359. he says to

  1360. the church

  1361. pray for me

  1362. pray for me

  1363. that words

  1364. may be given

  1365. to me

  1366. in opening

  1367. my mouth

  1368. boldly

  1369. to proclaim

  1370. the mystery

  1371. of the gospel

  1372. for which I

  1373. am an ambassador

  1374. in chains

  1375. that I may

  1376. declare it

  1377. boldly

  1378. as I ought

  1379. to speak

  1380. brothers and

  1381. sisters

  1382. if the

  1383. apostle to

  1384. the Gentiles

  1385. the guy

  1386. who wrote

  1387. most of the

  1388. letters of

  1389. the New

  1390. Testament

  1391. if he

  1392. needed

  1393. God's

  1394. people to

  1395. pray for

  1396. him

  1397. I'm pretty

  1398. sure you

  1399. and I

  1400. need prayer

  1401. from those

  1402. around us

  1403. too

  1404. so when

  1405. you meet

  1406. one-on-one

  1407. with friends

  1408. over coffee

  1409. when you

  1410. have small

  1411. group time

  1412. prayer time

  1413. invite others

  1414. into your

  1415. struggle

  1416. because they're

  1417. in the same

  1418. position as you

  1419. are

  1420. the fears

  1421. might be

  1422. different

  1423. but we all

  1424. wrestle with

  1425. this reality

  1426. invite others

  1427. in to pray

  1428. for you

  1429. in very

  1430. practical

  1431. ways

  1432. for how

  1433. you see

  1434. fear being

  1435. distorted

  1436. in your

  1437. lives

  1438. and then

  1439. lastly

  1440. a practical

  1441. application

  1442. is to

  1443. try it

  1444. try it

  1445. out

  1446. do not

  1447. wait for

  1448. your feelings

  1449. to catch up

  1450. to what

  1451. the scriptures

  1452. are telling

  1453. you

  1454. don't wait

  1455. to feel

  1456. bold

  1457. being

  1458. brave

  1459. isn't

  1460. the absence

  1461. of fear

  1462. rather it

  1463. is being

  1464. being afraid

  1465. still

  1466. and yet

  1467. doing

  1468. the right

  1469. thing

  1470. anyway

  1471. so step

  1472. out into

  1473. whatever

  1474. sphere it

  1475. may be

  1476. that you

  1477. know

  1478. God

  1479. is calling

  1480. you to

  1481. and where

  1482. these fears

  1483. are distorted

  1484. for you

  1485. being

  1486. fueled

  1487. and

  1488. strengthened

  1489. by God's

  1490. word

  1491. resting

  1492. in the

  1493. prayers

  1494. of God's

  1495. saints

  1496. for you

  1497. expect

  1498. to have

  1499. those

  1500. old

  1501. feelings

  1502. that come

  1503. from a

  1504. distorted

  1505. fear

  1506. expect

  1507. them to

  1508. be there

  1509. for a

  1510. little

  1511. while

  1512. longer

  1513. as God

  1514. continues

  1515. to work

  1516. in you

  1517. but do

  1518. not let

  1519. that stop

  1520. you from

  1521. doing

  1522. what God

  1523. calls you

  1524. to do

  1525. you may

  1526. be familiar

  1527. with

  1528. C.S.

  1529. Lewis's

  1530. book

  1531. The Lion

  1532. the Witch

  1533. and the

  1534. Wardrobe

  1535. it's a

  1536. family

  1537. favorite

  1538. for us

  1539. and we

  1540. read it

  1541. once in

  1542. a while

  1543. there's a

  1544. scene

  1545. in which

  1546. brother

  1547. Peter

  1548. is

  1549. seeking

  1550. to defend

  1551. his

  1552. sisters

  1553. from

  1554. attacking

  1555. wolves

  1556. who

  1557. serve

  1558. the

  1559. wicked

  1560. white

  1561. witch

  1562. and Lewis

  1563. writes

  1564. this

  1565. he says

  1566. Peter

  1567. did not

  1568. feel

  1569. very

  1570. brave

  1571. indeed

  1572. he felt

  1573. he was

  1574. going to

  1575. be sick

  1576. but that

  1577. made no

  1578. difference

  1579. to what

  1580. he had

  1581. to do

  1582. it made

  1583. no difference

  1584. to what

  1585. he had

  1586. to do

  1587. don't let

  1588. your feelings

  1589. make a

  1590. difference

  1591. to what

  1592. you have

  1593. to do

  1594. to what

  1595. God

  1596. is calling

  1597. you to

  1598. do

  1599. what

  1600. Jesus

  1601. lays out

  1602. in these

  1603. verses

  1604. for us

  1605. this

  1606. morning

  1607. to

  1608. place

  1609. God

  1610. in his

  1611. rightful

  1612. place

  1613. the

  1614. gospel

  1615. cure

  1616. cures us

  1617. from

  1618. good

  1619. fear

  1620. gone

  1621. bad

  1622. and with

  1623. that

  1624. in place

  1625. brothers and

  1626. sisters

  1627. friends

  1628. be equipped

  1629. be

  1630. courageous

  1631. to live

  1632. out

  1633. the life

  1634. God has

  1635. for you

  1636. serve

  1637. him

  1638. honoring

  1639. him

  1640. as you

  1641. receive

  1642. all of

  1643. God's

  1644. blessings

  1645. in your

  1646. life

  1647. let me

  1648. pray

  1649. heavenly

  1650. father

  1651. we thank

  1652. you for

  1653. your word

  1654. to us

  1655. this

  1656. morning

  1657. we thank

  1658. you for

  1659. how you

  1660. speak

  1661. into

  1662. our

  1663. the many

  1664. ways in

  1665. which our

  1666. lives are

  1667. messed up

  1668. and how

  1669. you have

  1670. spoken this

  1671. morning

  1672. and how

  1673. to

  1674. correct

  1675. distorted

  1676. fear

  1677. good

  1678. fear

  1679. gone

  1680. bad

  1681. we thank

  1682. you for

  1683. your son

  1684. Jesus

  1685. Christ

  1686. we thank

  1687. you for

  1688. your spirit

  1689. and we thank

  1690. you for

  1691. your word

  1692. word

  1693. we pray

  1694. Lord

  1695. that you

  1696. would work

  1697. in us

  1698. faith

  1699. to step

  1700. out

  1701. as you

  1702. call us

  1703. to in ways

  1704. which honor

  1705. you

  1706. glorify

  1707. you

  1708. we do

  1709. this in

  1710. Christ's

  1711. name

  1712. amen
