  1. picking at least one message from each

  2. book of the Old Testament. Not a book

  3. study, but just a taste to give you an

  4. appetite hopefully for studying the Old

  5. Testament. We're in a time when few

  6. Christians even read the New Testament

  7. the way they should, let alone the Old

  8. Testament. But we're trying to stimulate

  9. that. That's our purpose.

  10. And so we've we're up to first kings.

  11. So I call your attention to first kings.

  12. And some of you may have been with us in

  13. our Bible study when we did a book study

  14. on first kings. I think it was 11 years

  15. ago.

  16. And

  17. so you know some of this material fairly

  18. well.

  19. But I want to look in chapter one

  20. of first kings.

  21. Decided to select a message from that

  22. chapter

  23. for us.

  24. You remember when we taught in 2 Samuel,

  25. we were on the Davidic covenant, right?

  26. That's where we were.

  27. And that is the great covenant

  28. that God gave with King David.

  29. that his line, his devidic line would be

  30. the one that would bring the Messiah

  31. into the world

  32. and his and God made that promise to

  33. him.

  34. Everything in first kings chapter 1 is

    1 Kings 1 chapter mention

  35. based on all that.

  36. So the fact that we studied 2 Samuel 7

  37. was a preparation

  38. for this chapter and by the way for the

  39. New Testament.

  40. You cannot really understand the New

  41. Testament Jesus's birth in Bethlehem or

  42. uh who he is and the supernatural

  43. uh pres preservation of the Davidic line

  44. that Matthew 1 is talking about

  45. if you don't know something of these

  46. things.

  47. Now, David's an old man now.

  48. He's not the young teenager that killed

  49. Goliath.

  50. Was able to do exploits

  51. by God's grace above and beyond what

  52. anybody could imagine. He's not the

  53. warrior that he was for

  54. four decades at least,

  55. probably more.

  56. His health has deteriorated

  57. dramatically.

  58. He's old

  59. and he's not a young man anymore.

  60. And in chapter one of Kings, we see

  61. that

  62. the problems that come

  63. to David because of his age,

  64. some of it was physical,

  65. but now there are other problems.

  66. David's not the man he used to be.

  67. There's a saying in America, the old

  68. gray mare is not what she used to be.

  69. And most of us are a shadow of our

  70. former selves once we hit a certain age.

  71. Now,

  72. Satan has been fighting

  73. against God's declared program

  74. since he heard

  75. what God said to David.

  76. And what God said to David was said

  77. 3,000 years ago.

  78. And Satan heard every word of it.

  79. And so there were attempts to destroy

  80. not just the nation but especially the

  81. Davidic line just as our government has

  82. been trying to decapitate the leadership

  83. in Iran as well as destroy their

  84. munitions and ability to fight.

  85. Uh the Old Testament idea of battle was

  86. kill the king

  87. and Satan was all in on that.

  88. So it wasn't just the physical fighting

  89. that the idea was like a chess game.

  90. Kill the king.

  91. It was in the spiritual warfare.

  92. Kill the king and kill all his

  93. descendants.

  94. Remove the Davidic line from the earth.

  95. That was what's going on. You can't

  96. understand the New Testament if you just

  97. look at it as far as history without the

  98. satanic component.

  99. And

  100. there was different oppositions that

  101. will um manifest themselves in this.

  102. Adaliah,

  103. if you remember, wicked, wicked queen

  104. mother and and Adaliah took power in the

  105. southern kingdom about 129 years after

  106. the Davidic covenant.

  107. And she did her best. She killed all the

  108. royal seed.

  109. one baby escaped.

  110. You know the story.

  111. And that one baby continued the Davidic

  112. line

  113. that God had in mind

  114. for the King of the ages, the King of

  115. Kings, the Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ.

  116. If you want to know about that, it's in

  117. 2 Kings 11:1.

    2 Kings 11:1

  118. That's going to take place after our

  119. chapter.

  120. after this particular chapter.

  121. In our particular chapter, David's sons

  122. have been in rebellion against him

  123. to try to grab the throne.

  124. Abselum's already tried it. And now

  125. another son is going to try it.

  126. And David has to face this

  127. in his old age.

  128. Um, the problem is David's not the man

  129. he was.

  130. Even when Abselum

  131. was rebelling, David wasn't the man he

  132. was. He had to stay behind the fighting

  133. in here. Remember, David died 970 AD,

  134. excuse me, BC, I'm sorry. David died 970

  135. BC.

  136. Adaliah grabbed the throne 127 years

  137. after that.

  138. The difference between Adaliah and this

  139. particular chapter is a 100, excuse me,

  140. 129 years.

  141. So that's the difference between you and

  142. I and the cowboy days.

  143. So, this is a longhaul battle

  144. and and uh um Satan has used Abselum and

  145. now he's going to use Abselum's brother,

  146. sensing that David is passive,

  147. sensing that David is ill,

  148. wanting to take advantage of this and in

  149. the in and saying, "Look, he's old, he's

  150. ill. Uh, we need to get rid of him and

  151. get a new start. And they actually got

  152. some of David's chief people involved,

  153. mainly because the chief people saw the

  154. weakness in King David,

  155. Joab,

  156. his main general,

  157. and high priest

  158. and others.

  159. So, Satan was using this

  160. And um David was vulnerable.

  161. His old age made him vulnerable.

  162. So let's start reading some of it. It's

  163. going to take too long to read the whole

  164. chapter. I'm assuming that some of you

  165. know some of this story

  166. and we just don't have time to read it

  167. all. Now, King David was old and

  168. stricken in years. stricken in years,

  169. which means agent caught up with him.

  170. The outward man perishes

  171. and David's outward man, his physical

  172. man. Uh he he was limited now. He was

  173. stricken in years and they covered him

  174. with clothes because he because he could

  175. not get warmth.

  176. He could not get warm.

  177. When I was a young teenager, 16, I've

  178. told this story before. We had a lady

  179. that lived right next to us. She had a

  180. beautiful brick home and and a beautiful

  181. driveway and a great big nice Buick. And

  182. I would cut her grass.

  183. And in July when I'm cutting her grass,

  184. I got my shirt off.

  185. It's so hot. I'm dripping wet. I'm

  186. turning roses and cutting grass. and she

  187. would come to pay me

  188. in a mink mink coat.

  189. She was so cold in July when it's 95 or

  190. 100 outside

  191. that she came to the door

  192. in a mink coat.

  193. Mrs. Coppa,

  194. nice old lady.

  195. What was her problem? Circulation

  196. problem. Whatever the problem she had,

  197. she couldn't get warm.

  198. The nice thing about it, she let me take

  199. her Buick out for a drive and run the

  200. and run it hard to blow blow the

  201. carburetors out. And I enjoyed that

  202. part,

  203. a 16-year-old.

  204. But in verse two, David can't get warm.

  205. So here was the solution. And they

  206. sought for a fair damel throughout all

  207. the borders of Israel and found Abashag

  208. a Schumanite and brought her to the

  209. king. And the dames was very fair and

  210. cherished the king and ministered to

  211. him. And the king knew her not.

  212. She was a human water bottle.

  213. That was her job.

  214. David's sitting under the covers

  215. freezing.

  216. And I'm not saying this was right. But

  217. that's what they did.

  218. David okayed it.

  219. Then Adinijah the son of Hagath exalted

  220. himself. This is David's This is

  221. Abselum's brother

  222. saying, "I'll be king." David's old.

  223. He's out of it. He's preoccupied. He's

  224. not doing his job. Just laying in bed

  225. shivering.

  226. and he prepared chariots and horsemen

  227. and 50 men to run before him. And his

  228. father had not displeased him at any

  229. time, saying, "Why have you done so?"

  230. So David was negligent in rebuking the

  231. ambitions of his

  232. son as he was with Abselum.

  233. And he also was very handsome man. His

  234. mother bore him abs after Abselum. And

  235. he, that's Adonijah, conferred with Joab

  236. the son of Zariah. that was the general

  237. of David's armies and Aithar that was

  238. the high priest and they followed

  239. Adonijah helped him. Now things are

  240. deteriorating. People are switching

  241. sides. The future is with

  242. Adonijah.

  243. So they're treating David as if he's

  244. gone before he's gone.

  245. And Adonijah is trying to grab the

  246. throne. The problem with this is that

  247. Solomon was the rightful heir of David

  248. and everybody knew it,

  249. including these people.

  250. But Zadok the priest and Banayiah the

  251. son of Jehoeda and Nathan the prophet

  252. and Shemi and Rei and the mighty men who

  253. belong to David were not with Adonijah.

  254. Now, here's what's going on. Adonijah is

  255. throwing a

  256. party for himself

  257. and he has a plan that at that party the

  258. people there will declare him king.

  259. This is called a coup.

  260. They didn't invite Solomon. They didn't

  261. tell David. They didn't invite Nathan.

  262. They didn't invite Basheba

  263. because they knew that they would tell

  264. David this was a secret party.

  265. And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat

  266. cattle by the stone of Zohaleth, which

  267. is by Enrogel, and invited all his

  268. brethren, the king's sons, and all the

  269. men of Judah, the king's servants. But

  270. Nathan the prophet, and Baniah, and the

  271. mighty men of and Solomon, his brother,

  272. he invited not. pretty clear what's

  273. going on there. Right

  274. now, Nathan finds out about it.

  275. Wherefore, Nathan spoke to Basheba.

  276. He didn't go right to David. He went to

  277. David's wife, Ba Sheeba, the mother of

  278. Solomon, and said, "Have you not heard

  279. that Adinijah, the son of Haggath, doth

  280. rain, and David, our Lord, knows it

  281. not?" Now, he wasn't really reigning. He

  282. was that was going to be his coronation

  283. party. This was an emergency.

  284. They had to act and act now. Old people

  285. aren't good at that.

  286. Try to get an old person to uh to go

  287. someplace and it always takes longer,

  288. doesn't it?

  289. Old people are not good at past stuff. I

  290. can say that about David because I'm

  291. seven years older now than he was then.

  292. But David had a hard life. Anybody

  293. that's a caveman for 10 years, anybody

  294. that fights for 45 or so years, he was

  295. kind of worn out,

  296. old before his time.

  297. Now therefore,

  298. this is what Nathan said, "Come, let me,

  299. I pray thee, give thee counsel that you

  300. may save your own life and the life of

  301. their son Solomon." If you want to live

  302. and you want your son Solomon to live

  303. cuz there's a coup starting and they're

  304. going to kill you if you don't act.

  305. They're going to eliminate competition.

  306. Go and get the King David and say to

  307. him, "Did not my lord, O king, swear to

  308. your handmmaid, saying, Assurely

  309. Solomon, your son, will reign after me,

  310. and he'll sit on the throne. Why then

  311. does Adonijah reign? And behold, while

  312. you were talking there to the king, I'll

  313. come in after you and confirm your

  314. words." And that's exactly what they

  315. did.

  316. And that stirred up the old king.

  317. That got his blood pressure up.

  318. He wasn't cold anymore.

  319. And David started to move.

  320. Um,

  321. I want to tell you something. There's a

  322. warning here for young people or old.

  323. The Bible says to all every Christian,

  324. Romans 12:11, never be lacking in zeal,

    Romans 12:11

  325. to keep your spiritual fervor.

  326. We have

  327. a responsibility

  328. all our lives to not be lacking in zeal,

  329. but to keep your spiritual fervor.

  330. serving home.

  331. That's for young people, middle-aged

  332. people, old people.

  333. Very important.

  334. David was active as a shepherd. He was

  335. active as a warrior. He was active as a

  336. king. He he uh got all the temple uh

  337. stuff ready for Solomon. But he had now

  338. wore himself out

  339. and sickness had done the rest.

  340. Proverbs 12:24 says, "Dilit diligent

    Proverbs 12:24

  341. hands will rule, but laziness ends in

  342. forced labor."

  343. There's a certain diligence, not just

  344. the pastor, not just the assistant

  345. pastor, not just the elders, not just

  346. the deacons, not just the people who are

  347. officers or leaders in the church.

  348. There's a certain diligence that's

  349. demanded every one of us.

  350. We should be diligent students of the

  351. scripture. We should be diligent in in

  352. our efforts to serve and love the Lord

  353. and minister to others and to pray. We

  354. should be diligent in all these things.

  355. In 1 John 3:18, it says, "Let us not

    1 John 3:18

  356. love with words or speech, but in action

  357. and in truth."

  358. And Hebrews 10 says, "Let us consider

  359. one another to spur one another on uh

  360. towards love and good deeds."

  361. We are in a time when church attendance

  362. across our nation is just falling apart.

  363. People just stop going to church.

  364. I'm a Christian. When was the last time

  365. you in church? Well, I don't do that

  366. anymore.

  367. Robinson and Crusoe Christianity is not

  368. biblical Christianity

  369. and God has created us under good works.

  370. He's before ordained that we should walk

  371. in them. And some of those good works

  372. are dealing with unsaved people, but

  373. other of those good works are dealing

  374. with saved people. And you can't do that

  375. on your couch in the living room on

  376. Sunday morning watching

  377. the YouTube.

  378. Now, thank God for the YouTube ministry.

  379. I think God allowed all the things that

  380. have happened so we would have a YouTube

  381. ministry.

  382. We need that ministry. We need to pray

  383. for that ministry.

  384. But God wants God's people to gather

  385. together. They're the ecclesia. They're

  386. called out, but they're called out to be

  387. with each other as well as to win the

  388. lost.

  389. Cannot do the one anothers at home.

  390. Say, I go to church. Somebody didn't

  391. treat me right. Well, forgive one

  392. another.

  393. You understand what I'm saying?

  394. Can't be longsuffering at home.

  395. You can't. There's certain things you

  396. can only do in a collective capacity.

  397. And it gets hard because you get tired

  398. of people that aren't what they ought to

  399. be. You get they get tired of you

  400. because you're not what you ought to be.

  401. We get tired of each other.

  402. But God has that purpose.

  403. So there's been an increase in passivity

  404. in David's life.

  405. Everybody sees it. Everybody knows it.

  406. Some are taking advantage of it. Others

  407. are saying, "Look,

  408. we are with David even though he's not

  409. what he should be and not what he used

  410. to be and we are with we know about

  411. thisic covenant and we're going to take

  412. action."

  413. So Basheba

  414. and uh the prophet Nathan

  415. got in got together and they kind of it

  416. was a little bit of manipulation on

  417. their part. uh a little bit of

  418. showmanship, but they did it to get his

  419. attention. And they got he got his

  420. attention and David David was stirred up

  421. and says, "All right, this do this this

  422. this this.

  423. Get my mule and have Solomon sit on it."

  424. And David set up everything. All of a

  425. sudden, the old king was roused to

  426. action.

  427. One writer said, "The book of Kings

  428. addresses an audience that was prone to

  429. take God for granted.

  430. And does not the current audience have

  431. similar feelings?"

  432. See, the book of Kings was written to

  433. the Jews that were in captivity. All

  434. this was history

  435. to them, and it was showing them they

  436. needed to be active even in captivity

  437. for the Lord.

  438. The original leadership was in captivity

  439. when first kings was written. They had

  440. no king. They had no country. They had

  441. no temple. And they experienced national

  442. death. But they expected them to be with

  443. it.

  444. No matter what happens to you, even if

  445. Athens Bible Church fails to exist, you

  446. got to be what? Zealous

  447. for good works.

  448. You got to do what you can do for the

  449. Lord wherever you are.

  450. Um,

  451. now that doesn't mean we can indulge,

  452. condone or cater to excuses or laziness

  453. in leadership or lack of ability to

  454. lead. Sometimes transitions need to take

  455. place and leadership is the act of

  456. leading a group of people or

  457. organization. David wasn't leaving

  458. leading so other people grabbed in.

  459. Now there's a compressed history in

  460. first kings but it's a significant

  461. history.

  462. First Kings, the whole book takes about

  463. 400 years

  464. of Old Testament history.

  465. And it's 500 50, excuse me, 50,000 words

  466. to do a 400year history as a drastic

  467. reduction in detail.

  468. Would you like to take America's

  469. history, 400 years of American history,

  470. and do it in 50,000 words?

  471. 50,000 words is a lot but not a lot to

  472. deal with history. So the p the stories

  473. that are told are sto told told with a

  474. reason.

  475. Dale Ralph Davis said the writer of

  476. kings must be very selective which

  477. implies that what he does include must

  478. be of vital importance. Can't write

  479. everything.

  480. Got to write a little bit on each thing.

  481. So I'm going to select the main thing.

  482. What's he want us to see?

  483. He wants us to see that God works

  484. providentially in times of emergency and

  485. crisis to keep his program going.

  486. He stirs people up.

  487. This is an incredible time of danger.

  488. Um later

  489. Adaliah will try to grab the throne,

  490. right? She'll try to grab the throne.

  491. One of the most wicked womans that had

  492. ever lived. And she killed all the

  493. Davidic line but one baby as said

  494. before. That was from without

  495. Jezebel's daughter,

  496. Nahhab's daughter. Apostate people from

  497. the northern kingdom.

  498. a gross idolatry.

  499. This is from within.

  500. So the troubles can come from without.

  501. They can come from within.

  502. David is old and cold.

  503. He's lost his vitality and verility.

  504. He's detached. He's out of touch both

  505. with his family and nation.

  506. He's confined mostly to bed at this

  507. point. He's old before his time.

  508. It's hard when you're not feeling well

  509. to think about other things

  510. yourself.

  511. Pain has a way of doing that, right?

  512. So anyway, David is in that shape.

  513. The thing we'll see is that although

  514. this was a problem,

  515. David at the time

  516. wasn't seeing it for what it was.

  517. And when he did see it, he probably

  518. thought, "Oh no, here we go again.

  519. Here's Abselum 2.

  520. God is sovereign

  521. in his program. whether it's the kingdom

  522. program in the Old Testament or the

  523. church program in the New Testament.

  524. And he's able to get people through the

  525. times of transition.

  526. What a wonderful thing to see God at

  527. work here.

  528. Sooner or later, Athens Bible Church is

  529. going to go into transition, right? I'm

  530. not going to be here if Jesus doesn't

  531. come.

  532. I just turned 77.

  533. Half the people in the nursing home are

  534. younger than me

  535. that I minister to. I want to tell you.

  536. Say, how old are you? Oh, I'm 73. Oh,

  537. well, you know, when you get older, you

  538. kind of find out, oh, I'm older than I

  539. imagined myself to be till you try to do

  540. this or try to do that.

  541. Sooner or later, you run out of gas.

  542. But God replaces the instruments and the

  543. work goes on, right? Buries the workman,

  544. but the work goes on.

  545. And we need to know that.

  546. And we can't avoid the fact as we get

  547. older.

  548. But we what a rejoicing it is at Athens

  549. Bible Church to know God's at work.

  550. Our work

  551. is more important to him than it is to

  552. us.

  553. And von Rad is a

  554. more liberal kind of Old Testament

  555. theologian, but he said the line of

  556. David has not yet come to an irrevocable

  557. end.

  558. So somehow God kept it going. You know

  559. what happened here?

  560. uh people started acting and Solomon was

  561. anointed to be king sitting on David's

  562. mule and the party started in Jerusalem

  563. and the party ended with at Adonijah's

  564. house.

  565. What's all that noise? Oh, they they

  566. just anointed Solomon as king and every

  567. all the guests left.

  568. Nobody wanted to be around him anymore.

  569. So the party was over for those who were

  570. trying to do the coup against David. And

  571. God used Basheba. Think about it. He

  572. used Basheba.

  573. And he used Nathan.

  574. God's providences keep God's promises

  575. and programs going.

  576. But there's something else that happens

  577. here that's very important.

  578. God's providence in the Old Testament,

  579. his hand in the glove of history

  580. shows that human kings that are not

  581. immortal and incorruptible

  582. are not the answer. Not even if they're

  583. of the Davidic line

  584. like Solomon or Hezekiah or Josiah.

  585. None of these kings could foraw

  586. forestoall the inevitable exile.

  587. None of these kings could reign forever.

  588. And God's providence shows prophetically

  589. in kings that what is needed is a

  590. Davidic king that is more than what we

  591. see in Old Testament history and

  592. history.

  593. What is needed is a God incarnate

  594. Davidic king who is immortal,

  595. infallible

  596. and irreplaceable.

  597. And that king is Jesus Christ.

  598. That king is Jesus Christ.

  599. Turn with me to Isaiah chapter 9 and

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  600. verse 6.

  601. What does Ezekiel say? God says, "I'll

  602. overturn, overturn, overturn until he

  603. comes whose right it is."

  604. And someday the overturning will be

  605. over.

  606. Isaiah 9:6.

    Isaiah 9:6

  607. For unto us a child is born,

  608. unto us a son is given.

  609. Government will be on his shoulder.

  610. His name shall be called wonderful

  611. counselor, mighty God, the everlasting

  612. father, the prince of peace. And of his

  613. increase of his government and peace

  614. there will be no end.

  615. upon the throne of David

  616. and upon his kingdom

  617. to order it and to establish it with

  618. justice and righteousness from

  619. henceforth even forever more.

  620. Underline this,

  621. the zeal of the Lord of hosts

  622. will perform this.

  623. Now our Lord Jesus is of the seed of

  624. David.

  625. Our Lord Jesus was murdered and martyed.

  626. But our Lord Jesus arose from the dead

  627. incorruptible and immortal.

  628. And he's coming again.

  629. He's coming again.

  630. And when Paul wanted to summarize his

  631. gospel in 1 Timothy 1:16, he said this

    1 Timothy 1:16

  632. way, Jesus Christ of the seed of David

  633. risen again.

  634. That's the shortest summary he could

  635. give to it.

  636. Get those two things. He's the seed of

  637. David and he's risen.

  638. And he's not risen to die again as

  639. Lazarus was. He's risen to live forever

  640. and reign forever.

  641. All the Old Testament kings died. All

  642. the Old Testament kings sinned.

  643. David's sins endangered him. David

  644. David's age disengaged him from his

  645. responsibilities. He had to be jolted

  646. into doing the right thing. Other king

  647. sins brought the nation to captivity.

  648. There is one king who reigns forever.

  649. He's impeccable. He's immortal. He's

  650. incorruptible.

  651. And the shortcomings of all the Old

  652. Testament kings, even the best Old

  653. Testament king, David,

  654. prepare us for the perfections we see in

  655. the identity, activity, and longevity

  656. of our Lord

  657. Jesus Christ.

  658. First Kings chapter 1 is such a powerful

    1 Kings 1 chapter mention

  659. passage.

  660. Um,

  661. we're we're reminded in ministry that

  662. business doesn't take care of itself.

  663. Old saying, you take care of business

  664. and business will take care of you.

  665. Well, none of us, all of us have

  666. problems that tend to overwhelm us, tend

  667. to preoccupy us with our own problems to

  668. the neglecting of our family or our

  669. nation or our local church.

  670. David's physical health is all but gone.

  671. The decrepitude of David was

  672. exceptional. He was drained of his vital

  673. force, one writer said.

  674. And so the enemy of God is trying to

  675. fork to program him.

  676. And behind Adonijah and Adonijah's

  677. gamble on David David's weakness

  678. was Satan who wanted to make most of it.

  679. And as one said, David acted with

  680. surprising strength and discipleness.

  681. Once he knew what was happening, old

  682. lion became young.

  683. And uh

  684. the central

  685. contention of the text, one Old

  686. Testament scholar said, is that the Lord

  687. maintains his kingdom in all its

  688. precarious moments.

  689. And what he does for his kingdom, he

  690. does for his church.

  691. Local churches come and go.

  692. The local church is immortal till God's

  693. done with it.

  694. This is an individual is immortal till

  695. God's done with. When your work is done,

  696. it's over. People have individual

  697. ministries that God wants them to do,

  698. and they're immortal till that work's

  699. done. Local churches have ministries

  700. that are immortal till that work is

  701. done. Churches come, churches go, local

  702. churches.

  703. But that church is immortal till its

  704. particular work is done. And God can

  705. raise up other churches in other places.

  706. And so we we have a good God.

  707. We have a great God.

  708. And when we see in the battle that

  709. things are hard and oh no, here we go

  710. again.

  711. As we walk with the Lord, we say we've

  712. been here before.

  713. I've been in this fight before.

  714. There's a Civil War movie

  715. that uh a general is on his horse

  716. and the enemy artillery opens up and

  717. shells are hitting all around

  718. and the horse is becomes skiddish at the

  719. explosions

  720. and that Civil War

  721. um

  722. general pats his horse and said,

  723. "Steady, world. We've been through this

  724. before.

  725. No matter how hard it gets,

  726. we ought to be steady.

  727. We've been through this

  728. before.

  729. Um,

  730. it's sad, isn't it, that Joab and Athar,

  731. uh, who'd been with David such a long

  732. time,

  733. failed

  734. at a critical moment

  735. and went with Adonija and his ambitions.

  736. Someone said, "The problem with building

  737. our own little kingdom is that we never

  738. find our rightful place in the true

  739. kingdom of God."

  740. Is the most important thing to be king

  741. or is the most important thing to be in

  742. the place God wants you to be?

  743. Jonathan was never king. His dad had

  744. ambitions for him to become. He wanted

  745. his dad wanted to kill David so Jonathan

  746. could be king. Jonathan knew what God's

  747. will was. He was very happy not being

  748. king. You'll be king and I'll be after

  749. you. That was his

  750. motto.

  751. He found his place in the program of God

  752. and he was happy with it.

  753. May we find our place in the program of

  754. God in the church of God and be happy

  755. with it.

  756. I happen to think Jonathan is one of the

  757. most attractive people in the Old

  758. Testament.

  759. And you wonder, why didn't God let him

  760. be the next king?

  761. In some ways, he's more attractive than

  762. David.

  763. Has nothing to do with it. God sets up

  764. kings and takes them down according to

  765. Daniel chapter 2 and chapter 7.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  766. And I like that line that I read. The

  767. problem with building our own little

  768. kingdom is we never find our rightful

  769. place in the true kingdom of God. Don't

  770. try to be something you aren't.

  771. Serve the Lord where he's put you in in

  772. the body of Christ.

  773. And let God's choice be your choice.

  774. Adinijah did not consult Basheba. He he

  775. did not consult Solomon. He did not

  776. consult Hathan. Didn't invite him to his

  777. party because he knew they wouldn't

  778. support him.

  779. Um

  780. there's several times in America where

  781. Christians aren't invited to the party.

  782. We're not wanted.

  783. They don't feel an affinity for us. They

  784. got a different agenda than us and they

  785. know it.

  786. And you know what? We know it.

  787. We know it.

  788. And Christians are criminalized by the

  789. winners in the culture wars and

  790. demonized and falsely characterized

  791. uh often, aren't they?

  792. Um I hope this message has been a

  793. challenge to you.

  794. God puts the members in the body where

  795. he will, not just the leaders

  796. and that we'd be about our Lord's

  797. business no matter what our position is.

  798. Whether we have an official position in

  799. the church or an unofficial position, if

  800. God wants you in a local body, he's got

  801. something for you to do in that local

  802. body and something he wants to do

  803. through that local body.

  804. And sometimes where we're old, we can't

  805. do what we used to do. I've told the

  806. story so many times about Reverend Smith

  807. who started Dover Bible Church. He got

  808. kicked out of his church by the

  809. liberals, lost his building, lost his

  810. pension, started Dover Bible Church. And

  811. when I knew him, he was an old man,

  812. probably

  813. my age,

  814. but he had some serious health issues.

  815. He couldn't preach anymore.

  816. walked with a cane.

  817. His wife was gone

  818. and he had some digestive issues that if

  819. he ate something on Saturday, he

  820. couldn't go to church on Sunday.

  821. That old man was very softspoken,

  822. didn't say a lot,

  823. but every Sunday he walked down the

  824. aisle and came up front and he had a

  825. special seat with a pad on it for his

  826. old bones. He sat there.

  827. Looking back on it, I wish I'd have

  828. spent more time with him.

  829. I was assistant pastor of that church in

  830. the summertime while I was in seminary

  831. and also over Christmas.

  832. But I'm thankful for that quiet

  833. faithful.

  834. He wasn't trying to be something he

  835. wasn't. He was too old to pastor and he

  836. knew it.

  837. But he was there.

  838. And here I am, a young man in my early

  839. 20s.

  840. And he marked me by his faithfulness

  841. probably more than many sermons

  842. never helped me.

  843. You got a role. I got a role.

  844. Got to play our part.

  845. And may God stir us up to do it.

  846. Nathan stirred up Basheba.

  847. You're going to be dead and your son's

  848. going to be dead. You either act or

  849. curtains for you.

  850. Basheba and Nathan stirred up. David

  851. Alfred Eersshim

  852. was a Jewish writer on Old Testament and

  853. New Testament, Jewish Christian writer

  854. in the 1800s.

  855. And he said, "With whatever weakness

  856. David may have been chargeable, he

  857. always rose to the requirements of the

  858. situation.

  859. And in hours of decisive importance,

  860. when either the known will of God or

  861. else the interest of his kingdom were in

  862. question, in this instance, his measures

  863. were immediate and decisive."

  864. All of a sudden, the old warrior woke

  865. up.

  866. Get Solomon. Get my mule.

  867. Everybody do this. Get the trumpets.

  868. Don't delay.

  869. Get bananiah.

  870. And he went to work.

  871. Application

  872. to ourselves.

  873. Number one,

  874. transfers in leadership

  875. must take place.

  876. Whether it's Sunday school class teacher

  877. or whether it's elder or deacon or

  878. pastor,

  879. they must take place.

  880. We all have just a brief time here.

  881. But times of transition,

  882. especially when people are older

  883. and have been faithful till they're

  884. older,

  885. are times of testing and can can be

  886. times of division.

  887. And at key moments,

  888. passing the baton

  889. is one of the hardest things churches

  890. do.

  891. May God guide us in our transitions

  892. as we're all getting older

  893. and trust that bigger than any human

  894. leader is the God above.

  895. Second, the best of men are men at best,

  896. and physical problems incapacitate those

  897. that we think are irreplaceable.

  898. Um, David served his generation by the

  899. will of God.

  900. And probably no one for many years after

  901. David could compare with him. Everybody

  902. was compared to him.

  903. But the work of God didn't stop when

  904. David died because the work of God was

  905. bigger than David. And the only thing

  906. that made David something was that God

  907. behind it.

  908. That's true for every church leader

  909. today.

  910. Have you ever noticed how many major

  911. Bible teachers have passed on in the

  912. last year?

  913. You taking notice of that?

  914. An unusual amount.

  915. Some of them weren't so good. Some of

  916. them are very good.

  917. But God buries his workmen and the work

  918. goes on

  919. because it's not a work of man.

  920. Um

  921. people are looking

  922. for an event.

  923. We are looking

  924. for a person.

  925. We're looking for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  926. May our minds and our hearts be upon

  927. him.

  928. Another application is authority is hard

  929. to relinquish when you are used to

  930. having it.

  931. When you're in a position of authority,

  932. whether it's a Sunday school class or

  933. song leader or any position, it's kind

  934. of hard to relinquish that, right?

  935. Because that's my ministry. I'm I'm this

  936. is my ministry. And we don't like to

  937. give it up. And sometimes we should not.

  938. We should just be faithful and keep

  939. going. But other times it becames

  940. obvious it's time for me to do something

  941. else.

  942. And that's true of all of us. And uh age

  943. will teach us that if nothing else does.

  944. Now there's no age limit for pastors by

  945. the way.

  946. You you just look at the

  947. look at you buy a book and the

  948. biographies of different pastors.

  949. Some died in their 50s like Spurgeon.

  950. Others were ministering in their 80s.

  951. You don't know.

  952. There's no age limit. Some churches put

  953. an age limit on it. But God doesn't.

  954. Uh but even if a pastor has to so-called

  955. retire, hopefully he still be filling

  956. pulpits.

  957. And if he can't do anything else till

  958. the Lord calls him, do nursing home

  959. ministry or something.

  960. Um, but authority is hard to relinquish

  961. when you're used to having it. We all

  962. like to have our own way, right?

  963. Isn't that a pretty much human

  964. condition?

  965. And it's hard when you're old to see

  966. other people doing what you used to do.

  967. And maybe you don't like the way it's

  968. done, but

  969. you're not in that position anymore.

  970. May God give us grace for any of those

  971. things.

  972. Every life has its limitations. Every

  973. life had somebody that can't do all they

  974. want to do. Moses, oh, let me go over

  975. the Jordan and see the promised land.

  976. Nope. You're not going.

  977. Not going.

  978. 120 years is enough, Moses.

  979. your state. You're going to get buried

  980. in Moab.

  981. Great disappointment for us.

  982. Oh, but God let him see the other side

  983. of the Jordan when

  984. the Mount of Transfiguration, Moses

  985. and Elijah,

  986. Jesus, he finally got to go

  987. on the other side.

  988. If God keeps you back from something

  989. that you want

  990. that you need, that you feel is very

  991. important. It might be this, that, and

  992. the other thing.

  993. Don't worry about it. The Lord gives,

  994. the Lord takes away.

  995. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

  996. Anything

  997. you lose in this life is going to be

  998. made up for in the next.

  999. So let's not let's get the proper focus

  1000. on all these things.

1001. And we do not have to live a long life

1002. to do and see all we would like to do

1003. because we've got another life coming.

1004. And this life with its limitations is

1005. just to prepare us for the next. So what

1006. should we do? We should do what David

1007. did. You can't build me a house, but

1008. I'll build you a house. But you can

1009. prepare the materials for the temple

1010. that Solomon's going to build. Now, it

1011. was good because that took Solomon, I

1012. think, six years to build it after David

1013. prepared the all the materials. Can you

1014. imagine if Solomon had to do all that?

1015. So David had his role. Solomon had his

  1016. role.

1017. Um Paul said I planted Apollos watered.

  1018. God gave the increase.

1019. So I hope this message is just a

1020. blessing and a challenge to you as we

1021. think about all these things and we find

1022. ourselves not with unholy ambition

1023. but satisfied when transitions come in

1024. our church or different leadership

1025. changes take place in our church. Uh

1026. that God is in charge of all that.

1027. Let's not try to let's try to keep the

1028. church uh as solid and good as it can

  1029. be, but let's be long-suffering with

1030. providence of God that happens and rest

1031. in the king that's above all kings and

1032. the pastor who's above all pastors, the

1033. great shepherd of the sheep, Jesus

  1034. Christ.

1035. If you are hearing my voice and you

1036. don't know the Lord, I want to tell you

1037. something. I found this to be so. So

1038. many people think if they find fault

1039. with the church, they've got an excuse

  1040. for their unbelief.

1041. Oh, this pastor did this. This person

1042. did that. I saw this in this church. So,

1043. I'm not going to be a Christian. Our

1044. faith is not in the church.

1045. Our faith is not even in the leaders of

  1046. the church.

1047. We want a good church and we want good

1048. leaders, but our faith is where? It's in

  1049. Jesus Christ.

1050. And as George Whitfield told us a woman

1051. who was overgushing about how wonderful

1052. she thought he was, he he said,"Woman, a

1053. a minister is a poor savior in the day

  1054. of judgment.

1055. Don't put your faith in me. I got faith

1084. hearts when things are different than

1085. they used to be. Help us to do the right

1086. thing even if it costs us.

1087. Help us not to do the wrong thing even

  1088. no matter who's involved.

  1089. In Jesus name. Amen.

1090. Lord, as we go from this place,

1091. loving you more, trusting you more.

1092. May the power of your love and the light

1093. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1094. world. As we go from this place,
