  1. Please turn with me in your Bibles to Exodus chapter 25.

    Exodus 25 chapter mention

  2. We are entering the final section in the book of Exodus

  3. where it talks about the building,

  4. the instructions for the tabernacle

  5. and the actual construction of the tabernacle.

  6. And it takes extended time to describe

  7. the specific dimensions of and the furnishings

  8. within the tabernacle.

  9. And then it spends more chapters later on

  10. describing almost in identical words,

  11. verbatim, that they did exactly what they were told to do.

  12. And so we're gonna actually cover those two parts together

  13. and I'm gonna explain why it's repeated in the text

  14. as we go through this final section together.

  15. So we're gonna look at Exodus 25 verses one to nine

  16. and then Exodus 35 verses four to 29.

  17. And then lastly, we're gonna look at Exodus 38

    Exodus 38:21–31

  18. verses 21 to 31.

  19. So please have your Bibles open

  20. and ready to kind of flip through and follow along.

  21. And let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  22. Heavenly Father, we want to lay aside our distractions.

  23. This morning, some of us are distracted

  24. by things that happen this week.

  25. Some of us are distracted by what's gonna happen later today

  26. or later this week.

  27. And some of us are distracted with service here

  28. during our worship.

  29. But Lord, right now,

  30. as we come to your word,

  31. we want to sit at your feet

  32. and we want to listen.

  33. We want to hear from you.

  34. So help us

  35. to incline our ears and our hearts

  36. as you speak to us from your word

  37. that we might stand in awe of you

  38. and your glory,

  39. that we might rejoice

  40. and delight in

  41. the great grace you have shown us

  42. in coming to dwell among us.

  43. In Jesus' name we pray.

  44. Amen.

  45. If you are able,

  46. please stand for the reading of God's word.

  47. I'm gonna first read Exodus 25,

  48. 1 to 9.

  49. The Lord said to Moses,

  50. Speak to the people of Israel

  51. that they take for me a contribution.

  52. From every man whose heart moves him,

  53. you shall receive the contribution for me.

  54. And this is the contribution

  55. that you shall receive from them,

  56. gold, silver, and bronze,

  57. blue and purple and scarlet yarns

  58. and fine twined linen,

  59. goat's hair,

  60. tanned ram skins,

  61. goat skins,

  62. acacia wood,

  63. oil for the lamps,

  64. spices for the anointing oil

  65. and for the fragrant incense,

  66. onyx stones

  67. and stones for setting

  68. for the ephod

  69. and for the breast piece.

  70. And let them make me a sanctuary

  71. that I may dwell in their midst.

  72. Exactly as I show you

  73. concerning the pattern

  74. of the tabernacle

  75. and of all its furniture,

  76. so you shall make it.

  77. Going ahead to Exodus 35, 4 to 29.

  78. Moses said to all the congregation

  79. of the people of Israel,

  80. This is the thing

  81. that the Lord has commended.

  82. Take from among you

  83. a contribution to the Lord.

  84. Whoever is of a generous heart,

  85. let him bring the Lord's contribution,

  86. gold, silver, and bronze,

  87. blue and purple

  88. and scarlet yarns

  89. and fine twined linen,

  90. goat's hair,

  91. tanned ram skins

  92. and goat skins,

  93. acacia wood,

  94. oil for the light,

  95. spices for the anointing oil

  96. and for the fragrant incense,

  97. and onyx stones

  98. and stones for setting

  99. for the ephod

  100. and for the breast piece.

  101. Let every skillful craftsman among you

  102. come and make all

  103. that the Lord has commanded.

  104. The tabernacle,

  105. its tent and its covering,

  106. its hooks and its frames,

  107. its bars,

  108. its pillars and its bases.

  109. The ark with its poles,

  110. the mercy seat

  111. and the veil of the screen.

  112. The table with its poles

  113. and all its utensils

  114. and the bread of the presence.

  115. The lampstand also for the light

  116. with its utensils and its lamps

  117. and the oil for the light

  118. and the altar of incense

  119. with its poles

  120. and the anointing oil

  121. and the fragrant incense

  122. and the screen for the door

  123. at the door of the tabernacle.

  124. The altar of burnt offering

  125. and with its grating of bronze,

  126. its poles and all its utensils,

  127. the basin and its stand,

  128. the hangings of the court,

  129. its pillars and its bases

  130. and the screen for the gate of the court.

  131. The pegs of the tabernacle

  132. and the pegs of the court

  133. and their cords.

  134. The finely worked garments

  135. for ministering in the holy place,

  136. the holy garments

  137. for Aaron the priest

  138. and the garments of his sons

  139. for their service as priests.

  140. Then all the congregation

  141. of the people of Israel

  142. departed from the presence of Moses

  143. and they came,

  144. everyone whose heart stirred him

  145. and everyone whose spirit moved him

  146. and brought the Lord's contribution

  147. to be used for the tent of meeting

  148. and for all its service

  149. and for the holy garments.

  150. So they came,

  151. both man and woman,

  152. all who were of a willing heart

  153. brought brooches and earrings

  154. and signet rings and armlets,

  155. all sorts of gold objects,

  156. every man dedicating an offering

  157. of gold to the Lord.

  158. And everyone who possessed blue

  159. or purple or scarlet yarns

  160. or fine linen or goat's hair

  161. or tanned ram skins

  162. or goat skins brought them.

  163. Everyone who could make a contribution

  164. of silver or bronze

  165. brought it as the Lord's contribution.

  166. And everyone who possessed acacia wood

  167. of any use in the work brought it.

  168. And every skillful woman spun with her hands

  169. and they all brought what they had spun

  170. in blue and purple and scarlet yarns

  171. and fine twined linen.

  172. All the women whose heart stirred them

  173. to use their skill

  174. spun the goat's hair.

  175. And the leaders brought onyx stones

  176. and stones to be set

  177. for the ephod and for the breast piece

  178. and spices and oil for the light

  179. and for the anointing oil

  180. and for the fragrant incense.

  181. All the men and women,

  182. the people of Israel,

  183. whose heart moved them

  184. to bring anything for the work

  185. that the Lord had commanded

  186. by Moses to be done,

  187. brought it as a freewill offering

  188. to the Lord.

  189. And finally, chapter 38,

  190. verses 21 to 31.

  191. These are the records of the tabernacle.

  192. The tabernacle of the testimony

  193. as they were recorded

  194. at the commandment of Moses.

  195. The responsibility of the Levites

  196. under the direction of Ethamar,

  197. the son of Aaron the priest,

  198. Bezalel, the son of Uri,

  199. son of Hur of the tribe of Judah,

  200. made all that the Lord commanded Moses.

  201. And with him was Oholiab,

  202. the son of Ahisamak of the tribe of Dan,

  203. an engraver and designer

  204. and embroiderer in blue and purple

  205. and scarlet yarns

  206. and fine twisted linen.

  207. All the gold that was used for the work

  208. in all the construction of the sanctuary,

  209. the gold from the offering

  210. was 29 talents and 730 shekels

  211. by the shekel of the sanctuary.

  212. The silver from those of the congregation

  213. who were recorded

  214. was 100 talents

  215. and 1,775 shekels

  216. by the shekel of the sanctuary.

  217. A becca, a head,

  218. that is half a shekel

  219. by the shekel of the sanctuary

  220. for everyone who was listed in the records

  221. from 20 years old and upward

  222. for 603,550 men.

  223. The 100 talents of silver

  224. were forecasting the basis of the sanctuary

  225. and the basis of the veil.

  226. A hundred basis for the 100 talents,

  227. a talent, a base.

  228. And of the 1,775 shekels,

  229. he made hooks for the pillars

  230. and overlaid their capitals

  231. and made fillets for them.

  232. The bronze that was offered

  233. was 70 talents

  234. and 2,400 shekels.

  235. With it, he made the basis

  236. for the entrance of the tent of meeting,

  237. the bronze altar

  238. and the bronze grating for it

  239. and all the utensils of the altar,

  240. the bases around the court

  241. and the basis of the gate of the court,

  242. all the pegs of the tabernacle

  243. and all the pegs around the court.

  244. This is God's holy

  245. and authoritative word.

  246. You may be seated.

  247. You guys were very patient

  248. through a longer reading.

  249. We've been in our sermon series

  250. in the book of Exodus

  251. for exactly a year

  252. as of last week.

  253. And of course,

  254. we took some breaks here and there

  255. for a sermon series

  256. through Advent and Christmas

  257. and with guest preachers

  258. and whatnot.

  259. And when we first began the series,

  260. I'd mentioned to you

  261. that chapters 1 to 18

  262. tell us about the salvation of the Lord,

  263. the deliverance of the Israelites,

  264. the Exodus.

  265. And then chapters 19 to 24

  266. tell us about the law of the Lord,

  267. the 10 commandments

  268. and the book of the covenant

  269. that we've been going through

  270. over the last two months or so,

  271. a few months or so.

  272. And then finally,

  273. chapters 25 to 40,

  274. which is where we're at,

  275. tell us about the presence of the Lord,

  276. where Israel follows

  277. God's detailed instructions

  278. for the construction of the tabernacle

  279. so that God may dwell in their midst.

  280. This last section of Exodus

  281. is the part that preachers

  282. are often tempted to skip

  283. for, I think, reasons

  284. that are probably apparent to you.

  285. They worry that the repetitive section

  286. with its seemingly tedious details

  287. about the tabernacle

  288. would bore their listeners.

  289. But the final section of Exodus

  290. is actually an indispensable

  291. and fitting conclusion

  292. to the book as a whole.

  293. Throughout the narratives

  294. of the Exodus in chapters 7 to 10,

  295. the Lord repeatedly said,

  296. let my people go.

  297. And there was a purpose for that,

  298. that they may serve me.

  299. And that's why the Lord

  300. freed the Israelites from slavery

  301. so that they might serve him.

  302. That's why some theologians

  303. prefer to call this

  304. not emancipation,

  305. but repatriation.

  306. They're taking one master,

  307. a cruel, harsh master in Egypt,

  308. to a gracious and benevolent master

  309. in Yahweh, the Lord.

  310. And so God,

  311. the serving God

  312. and worshiping God

  313. is the direction

  314. in which the all of Exodus

  315. has been pointing.

  316. And now that's where we are.

  317. Finally, the people

  318. are now getting to serve the Lord,

  319. to worship the Lord.

  320. This is really not an afterthought

  321. or an appendix.

  322. It's the climax

  323. of the book of Exodus.

  324. And the theological significance

  325. of the tabernacle

  326. is highlighted

  327. by just how many chapters

  328. in the book

  329. are dedicated to this subject.

  330. By comparison,

  331. it took only one chapter

  332. to tell us about 80 years

  333. of Moses' life.

  334. It took only one chapter

  335. to give us the Decalogue,

  336. the Ten Commandments.

  337. Even when you count

  338. the subsequent book

  339. of the covenant,

  340. that's still only five chapters.

  341. The entire Exodus narrative

  342. from the time Moses and Aaron

  343. first confront Pharaoh

  344. to the crossing of the Red Sea

  345. took nine chapters.

  346. That climactic event

  347. of divine deliverance

  348. in the Old Testament

  349. is told in nine chapters.

  350. But this book

  351. devotes 13 chapters

  352. for the construction

  353. of the tabernacle.

  354. Chapters 25 to 31

  355. is the blueprint,

  356. seven chapters.

  357. And then there's a break

  358. in chapters 32 to 34

  359. due to Israel's idolatry

  360. and the worship

  361. of the golden calf.

  362. And then in the chapters

  363. 35 to 40

  364. is the actual building

  365. of the tabernacle

  366. over six more chapters.

  367. So 13 chapters in total.

  368. And that makes us ask,

  369. why so much emphasis

  370. on all these hooks

  371. and frames

  372. and bars

  373. and poles

  374. and pegs

  375. and cords

  376. and linens

  377. and curtains?

  378. Well, because

  379. it's not just a tent.

  380. The word tabernacle

  381. comes from the Latin word

  382. that means tent.

  383. So it is a tent.

  384. But when the word

  385. in the Hebrew Bible

  386. is translated

  387. as tabernacle,

  388. it actually means

  389. the dwelling place.

  390. That's what the word

  391. is translating.

  392. Every time it says tabernacle,

  393. it's not just saying tent.

  394. It's saying the dwelling.

  395. The dwelling place

  396. of God.

  397. And so it's called

  398. sometimes the tent

  399. of meeting

  400. because it's where

  401. the Israelites

  402. would convene with God,

  403. meet with Him.

  404. And so this is

  405. a significant development

  406. in the biblical narrative

  407. because we know

  408. from Genesis

  409. that Adam and Eve

  410. had enjoyed

  411. communion with God

  412. in the garden.

  413. And it says

  414. in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  415. that God sometimes

  416. even walked in the garden.

  417. They enjoyed fellowship

  418. with Him.

  419. But because they

  420. sinned against God

  421. and ate from the tree

  422. of knowledge of good

  423. and evil

  424. that they were forbidden

  425. to eat from,

  426. they were cut off

  427. from the tree of life

  428. in the midst of the garden

  429. and then expelled

  430. from the garden.

  431. Ever since then,

  432. humanity has been

  433. living in exile

  434. from the presence of God.

  435. And this question

  436. has hung over

  437. all of Scripture

  438. up to this point.

  439. can God's people

  440. ever be reconciled to God?

  441. Can we ever be restored

  442. to His presence again?

  443. Will God ever dwell

  444. with us again?

  445. And the tabernacle

  446. is God's temporary

  447. but gracious yes

  448. to that question.

  449. And it points to

  450. God's ultimate answer

  451. to that question

  452. in Jesus Christ.

  453. That God does intend

  454. to dwell with His people again.

  455. And remarkably,

  456. we learn from this passage

  457. that not only does He

  458. intend to do that,

  459. the Lord invites us

  460. to give to

  461. and work for

  462. the construction

  463. of His very dwelling place

  464. among us.

  465. And we're going to explore

  466. that in three phases.

  467. First, we're going to look

  468. at the loftiness

  469. of God's dwelling.

  470. Secondly,

  471. the lowliness

  472. of God's dwelling.

  473. And third,

  474. the costliness

  475. of the people's offering.

  476. So let's first look

  477. at the loftiness

  478. of God's dwelling.

  479. Exodus 25,

    Exodus 25:8–9

  480. verses 8 to 9

  481. clearly tell us

  482. what the tabernacle

  483. is meant to be.

  484. The Lord says,

  485. And let them make me

  486. a sanctuary

  487. that I might dwell

  488. in their midst,

  489. exactly as I show you

  490. concerning the pattern

  491. of the tabernacle

  492. and of all its furniture,

  493. so you shall make it.

  494. This tent

  495. that they are to build

  496. for the Lord

  497. is a sanctuary,

  498. which is derived

  499. from the Latin word

  500. that means holy.

  501. It's a consecrated place.

  502. That's why

  503. the inner tent

  504. of the tabernacle

  505. is called

  506. the holy place.

  507. It's divided

  508. into two rooms,

  509. the holy place

  510. and the most holy place.

  511. In the Old Testament,

  512. sometimes a guilty fugitive

  513. ran to the sanctuary

  514. or the temple

  515. in order to kind of

  516. plead guilty

  517. and seek clemency.

  518. It was their way

  519. of seeking asylum.

  520. And it's because

  521. of that association

  522. with the sanctuary

  523. that the word sanctuary

  524. is nowadays often used

  525. to mean a refuge

  526. or a shelter.

  527. But its original meaning

  528. is simply a holy place,

  529. a place that is set apart.

  530. It's not an ordinary place,

  531. a place that is uncommon,

  532. a special place

  533. that's unlike any other.

  534. And the tabernacle

  535. is one such place.

  536. It's set apart

  537. by its design

  538. and by its building material.

  539. So before starting

  540. the construction,

  541. of course,

  542. you need to gather

  543. all the required materials.

  544. And that's what God

  545. instructs Moses to do.

  546. So in chapter 25,

  547. verses 3 to 7,

  548. we see this list.

  549. It says,

  550. this is the contribution

  551. that you shall receive

  552. from them,

  553. gold,

  554. silver,

  555. and bronze.

  556. So again,

  557. those are precious metals

  558. that have been prized

  559. through centuries,

  560. through millennia,

  561. because of their luster

  562. and because of their rarity.

  563. And even now,

  564. even nowadays,

  565. during financial downturns,

  566. investors often

  567. put their money in gold

  568. because gold is more likely

  569. to retain its value

  570. than dollar.

  571. And so the gold

  572. will be used

  573. for the furnishings

  574. within the tabernacle proper,

  575. the holy place

  576. and the most holy place.

  577. The ark,

  578. the mercy seat,

  579. the cover for the ark,

  580. the cherubim

  581. attached to that,

  582. as well as the altar

  583. of incense

  584. and the pillars

  585. inside the tabernacle

  586. will be all overlaid

  587. with gold.

  588. And then,

  589. according to Exodus 38

  590. to 27, 31,

  591. which we read earlier,

  592. silver will be used

  593. for the bases

  594. of the pillars

  595. in the tabernacle

  596. and for the capitals

  597. and the fillets

  598. and hooks

  599. of the pillars

  600. in the courtyard.

  601. And then bronze

  602. will be used

  603. for the bases

  604. and for the bronze altar

  605. and the bronze basin

  606. in the courtyard

  607. of the tabernacle.

  608. Why is this relevant?

  609. There are levels,

  610. there's a gradation

  611. within the tabernacle structure

  612. which sets God apart

  613. as holy.

  614. It's almost like

  615. the tabernacle

  616. has three stories.

  617. The land outside

  618. the courtyard

  619. is just dirt,

  620. but the courtyard

  621. is made up

  622. of bronze materials.

  623. And the top tip

  624. of the courtyard

  625. is made of silver.

  626. The rest of it

  627. underneath

  628. is made of bronze.

  629. So if you go further in,

  630. then the bottom

  631. of the pillars

  632. surrounding

  633. the actual

  634. tabernacle

  635. of the tent

  636. is made of silver.

  637. And then the rest of it

  638. above it

  639. is gold.

  640. And then once you step

  641. into the tabernacle,

  642. everything you see

  643. is gold.

  644. So there's a gradation.

  645. You should get closer

  646. to the most holy place,

  647. to the holy place,

  648. the more royal

  649. and exquisite

  650. and beautiful it gets.

  651. And the further away

  652. you get

  653. from that place,

  654. the more common

  655. and ordinary

  656. it gets.

  657. the idea

  658. is reinforcing

  659. the important fact

  660. that God

  661. is holy,

  662. set apart.

  663. He is the sovereign

  664. ruler of the universe

  665. before whom

  666. we should stand

  667. in awe

  668. and pay homage.

  669. Let's return

  670. to 2537

  671. and look at

  672. the rest of the

  673. building materials.

  674. In addition to gold,

  675. silver,

  676. and bronze,

  677. which was given

  678. in order of descending

  679. significance or value,

  680. we also get

  681. blue and purple

  682. and scarlet yarns

  683. and fine twine linen,

  684. which is again

  685. listed in descending

  686. order of value.

  687. The colored yarns

  688. were very expensive

  689. and rare in those days

  690. because this is

  691. before the invention

  692. of synthetic dyes.

  693. So dyes had to be

  694. extracted from

  695. natural sources

  696. and in this

  697. region of the world

  698. they would have to

  699. rely on sea mollusks

  700. like clams

  701. and they would have

  702. to get plant barks

  703. and leaves

  704. and berries

  705. or precious minerals

  706. to get the color

  707. that they want.

  708. So think about

  709. the long

  710. and painstaking

  711. labor that would

  712. be required

  713. to extract

  714. even modest

  715. amounts of dye,

  716. let alone

  717. enough to dye,

  718. enough to color

  719. an entire skin

  720. of yarn.

  721. Skin of yarn.

  722. So the next items

  723. listed are

  724. goat's hair,

  725. tanned ram skins

  726. and goat skins,

  727. which I'll talk more

  728. about when we get

  729. to them.

  730. And these are

  731. the next three layers

  732. of coverings

  733. for the tabernacle.

  734. So first the colored

  735. yarns and the

  736. fine twine linen

  737. and then goat's hair,

  738. tanned ram skin

  739. and then what this

  740. translation says

  741. goat skins.

  742. I won't go into

  743. these details for now

  744. but it's sufficient

  745. to note that this

  746. tabernacle doesn't

  747. have a single

  748. flimsy rain fly

  749. like my tent.

  750. It has three

  751. hefty, durable

  752. covers over the

  753. blue and purple

  754. and scarlet yarn.

  755. So four total layers

  756. of covering.

  757. The next few items

  758. are acacia wood

  759. which is known

  760. for its hardiness

  761. and durability.

  762. It's even stronger

  763. than oak.

  764. And then the oil

  765. for the lamb,

  766. spices for the

  767. anointing oil

  768. and for the

  769. fragrant incense.

  770. The spices

  771. are specifically

  772. described in Exodus

  773. 30 as the

  774. finest spices

  775. including myrrh,

  776. sweet smelling

  777. cinnamon,

  778. aromatic cane,

  779. acacia and

  780. olive oil.

  781. These are

  782. ingredients that

  783. are still used

  784. nowadays in perfumes

  785. and so it would

  786. fill the tabernacle

  787. with sweet

  788. aromas that

  789. are perhaps

  790. even therapeutic

  791. as you would

  792. smell it

  793. that would set

  794. the tabernacle

  795. apart from the

  796. common orders

  797. of life

  798. that you're used

  799. to smelling

  800. with your animals

  801. and with your

  802. sweaty self.

  803. So it's being

  804. set apart

  805. not only visually

  806. but also in

  807. your olfactory sense

  808. it's being set apart

  809. as a holy place

  810. like no other.

  811. And finally

  812. verse 7 adds

  813. onyx stones

  814. and stones

  815. for setting

  816. for the ephod

  817. and for the

  818. breast piece.

  819. I won't get

  820. into this now

  821. but these are

  822. precious stones

  823. of great value

  824. that will be used

  825. as attached

  826. to the garb

  827. of the priests

  828. and of the high priest.

  829. And so

  830. all that to say

  831. the rare

  832. and costly materials

  833. used for the

  834. construction

  835. of the tabernacle

  836. show that it was

  837. designed

  838. to be beautiful,

  839. designed to be

  840. glorious,

  841. so that it might

  842. be a sanctuary,

  843. a holy place

  844. for Yahweh

  845. so that the

  846. Lord is not

  847. cheapened

  848. before the eyes

  849. of his people.

  850. Everything about

  851. this place

  852. screams royalty,

  853. it screams

  854. sovereignty,

  855. majesty,

  856. and according

  857. to Numbers 2

  858. the entire

  859. Israelite camp

  860. was arranged

  861. around the

  862. tabernacle,

  863. the tabernacle

  864. at the center,

  865. three tribes

  866. to the north,

  867. three to the south,

  868. three to the east,

  869. three to the west.

  870. The king

  871. residing

  872. at the center

  873. of his people,

  874. of his loyal subjects,

  875. reigning over them.

  876. And this is a lesson

  877. for the Israelites.

  878. God is not

  879. to be regarded

  880. lightly.

  881. He is among you,

  882. but he is not

  883. like you.

  884. He is holy.

  885. He is set apart.

  886. Listen to him.

  887. Obey him.

  888. The specific instructions

  889. for the tabernacle

  890. also tell us

  891. the importance

  892. of strict adherence

  893. to God's commands.

  894. Notice what God

  895. says to Moses

  896. in chapter 25,

  897. verse 9.

  898. Exactly as I show you

  899. concerning the pattern

  900. of the tabernacle

  901. and of all its furniture,

  902. so you shall make it.

  903. The tabernacle

  904. is supposed to be built

  905. exactly the way

  906. the instruction says.

  907. The same thing

  908. is repeated

  909. in Exodus 25,

  910. 40,

  911. and quoting that verse,

  912. Hebrews 8, 5 says this,

  913. the priests serve

  914. a copy

  915. and shadow

  916. of the heavenly things.

  917. For when Moses

  918. was about to erect

  919. the tent,

  920. he was instructed

  921. by God saying,

  922. see that you make

  923. everything according

  924. to the pattern

  925. that was shown you

  926. on the mountain.

  927. The tabernacle,

  928. God's earthly dwelling place,

  929. is a copy.

  930. It's a shadow

  931. of the reality,

  932. which is God's

  933. heavenly dwelling.

  934. For example,

  935. Psalm 11, 4 speaks

  936. of how the Lord

  937. is in his holy temple

  938. and the Lord's throne

  939. is in heaven.

  940. And in John's vision

  941. of God's throne

  942. in Revelation 11, 19,

  943. it says,

  944. then God's temple

  945. in heaven was opened

  946. and the ark

  947. of his covenant

  948. was seen

  949. within his temple.

  950. There is in heaven itself

  951. a temple for the Lord

  952. and it's complete

  953. with its own ark

  954. of the covenant

  955. of which the earthly temple

  956. and its ark

  957. is merely a copy,

  958. a shadow.

  959. So Moses

  960. on the top

  961. of Mount Sinai

  962. got to see

  963. this,

  964. glimpse this temple

  965. of God,

  966. this heavenly temple.

  967. He saw the archetype

  968. of God's dwelling place

  969. and now he's commissioned

  970. to build

  971. an earthly copy

  972. according to that pattern.

  973. So you can think

  974. of the tabernacle

  975. in a way

  976. like almost

  977. like a miniature,

  978. a scale model,

  979. representative replica

  980. of the heavenly reality.

  981. The temple

  982. that Solomon built

  983. for God

  984. in Jerusalem

  985. is no longer standing,

  986. it's been destroyed

  987. but in Jerusalem

  988. they do have

  989. a scale model

  990. of the temple

  991. which is helpful

  992. for letting people

  993. see what it would

  994. have looked like.

  995. I mean,

  996. it's a lot smaller

  997. but what would it have looked like

  998. in this day and time

  999. and also to show them

1000. that this is a real thing,

1001. it really used to exist,

  1002. this is a copy

  1003. of the original

  1004. and that's the purpose

  1005. of the tabernacle.

  1006. It tells us that

  1007. there's a real thing

  1008. out there.

1009. This is just a copy.

  1010. It's a shadow

  1011. of reality

  1012. and this is why

  1013. it's so important

  1014. for that the Israelites

  1015. follow the blueprint

  1016. to a T.

  1017. That's why there are

  1018. seven chapters

  1019. of painstaking instructions

  1020. and then another

  1021. six chapters

  1022. to tell us

  1023. that they did exactly

  1024. according to the pattern

  1025. shown to Moses

  1026. on the mountain.

  1027. There is no room

  1028. for creative license here

  1029. because God's people

  1030. must know

  1031. that God's dwelling place

  1032. is real

1033. and that it is not

  1034. a figment

  1035. of Moses' imagination.

  1036. The tabernacle

  1037. is a replication

  1038. not an innovation

  1039. and that's why

  1040. it is beautiful

  1041. and glorious.

  1042. It resembles God's

  1043. heavenly temple,

  1044. dwelling place.

  1045. So in this way

  1046. the loftiness

  1047. of God's dwelling

  1048. place communicates

  1049. His glory

  1050. but the relative

  1051. lowliness

  1052. of God's dwelling

  1053. communicates

  1054. His grace.

  1055. The tabernacle

  1056. was a splendid tent

  1057. but it was still

  1058. a tent.

  1059. It was merely

  1060. a copy

  1061. of the heavenly reality.

  1062. How can

  1063. the Lord God

  1064. Yahweh

1065. stoop to such a level

  1066. to inhabit

  1067. that?

  1068. the Lord

  1069. commissioned

  1070. the building

  1071. of the tabernacle

  1072. in Exodus 25

  1073. 8 saying

  1074. that I may

  1075. dwell

  1076. in their midst.

  1077. That's an amazing

  1078. statement.

  1079. God is not

  1080. merely visiting

  1081. or stopping

  1082. by

  1083. the Israelites.

  1084. He is moving

  1085. into the neighborhood.

  1086. As I mentioned

  1087. earlier

  1088. the word

  1089. tabernacle

  1090. is a translation

  1091. of the word

  1092. that literally

  1093. means the dwelling.

  1094. It's where

  1095. God will

  1096. take residence.

  1097. But think

  1098. about that

  1099. for a moment.

  1100. Last time

  1101. I went camping

  1102. my tent

  1103. collapsed twice

  1104. before I was able

  1105. to actually

  1106. put it up properly.

  1107. It was

  1108. pretty flimsy.

  1109. When we think

  1110. of the most

  1111. royal and glamorous

  1112. accommodations

  1113. we do not

  1114. think of tents.

  1115. No matter

  1116. how glorious

  1117. it is

  1118. the tabernacle

  1119. is still

  1120. a portable

  1121. shelter

  1122. used for

  1123. camping

  1124. in the wilderness.

  1125. That's why

  1126. later in 2 Samuel 7

  1127. 2 David

  1128. laments to

  1129. Nathan the prophet

  1130. see now

  1131. I dwell

  1132. in a house

  1133. of cedar

  1134. but the ark

  1135. of God

  1136. dwells

  1137. in a tent.

  1138. So he

  1139. realized that

  1140. there is

  1141. a gross

  1142. incongruity

  1143. there and

  1144. he sets out

  1145. right away

  1146. to make

  1147. preparations

  1148. for the

  1149. building

  1150. of God's

  1151. temple

  1152. and it's

  1153. his son

  1154. Solomon

  1155. that

  1156. completes

  1157. that

  1158. task

  1159. and

  1160. even

  1161. Solomon

  1162. after

  1163. finishing

  1164. building

  1165. the temple

  1166. which is

  1167. grander than

  1168. the tabernacle

  1169. and twice

  1170. as big

  1171. in all its

  1172. proportions

  1173. 1 Kings 8

  1174. 27 he says

  1175. this

  1176. but will

  1177. God

  1178. indeed

  1179. dwell

  1180. on the

  1181. earth

  1182. behold

  1183. heaven

  1184. and the

  1185. highest

  1186. heaven

  1187. cannot

  1188. contain

  1189. you

  1190. how much

  1191. less

  1192. this

  1193. house

  1194. that I

  1195. have

  1196. built

  1197. if

  1198. even

  1199. the

  1200. temple

  1201. is

  1202. inadequate

  1203. accommodation

  1204. for the

  1205. Lord God

  1206. then how

  1207. can

  1208. this

  1209. tent

  1210. possibly

  1211. be

  1212. a

  1213. fitting

  1214. dwelling

  1215. place

  1216. for

  1217. almighty

  1218. God

  1219. remember

  1220. the last

  1221. time we

  1222. heard of

  1223. God

  1224. dwelling

  1225. somewhere

  1226. it was in

  1227. the previous

  1228. chapter

  1229. when it

  1230. said

  1231. that

  1232. the

  1233. cloud

  1234. covered

  1235. a

  1236. mountain

  1237. the

  1238. glory

  1239. of

  1240. the

  1241. Lord

  1242. dwelt

  1243. on

  1244. Mount

  1245. Sinai

  1246. and

  1247. the

  1248. cloud

  1249. covered

  1250. it

  1251. six

  1252. days

  1253. and

  1254. on

  1255. the

  1256. seventh

  1257. day

  1258. he

  1259. called

  1260. to

  1261. Moses

  1262. out

  1263. of

  1264. the

  1265. cloud

  1266. now

  1267. the

  1268. appearance

  1269. of

  1270. the

  1271. glory

  1272. of

  1273. the

  1274. Lord

  1275. was

  1276. like

  1277. a

  1278. devouring

  1279. fire

  1280. on

  1281. the

  1282. top

  1283. of

  1284. the

  1285. mountain

  1286. in

  1287. the

  1288. side

  1289. of

  1290. the

  1291. people

  1292. of

  1293. Israel

  1294. use

  1295. your

  1296. imagination

  1297. for a

  1298. bit

  1299. eruption

  1300. I'm

  1301. not

  1302. saying

  1303. that

  1304. it

  1305. was

  1306. a

  1307. volcanic

  1308. eruption

  1309. I

  1310. think

  1311. it

  1312. would

  1313. look

  1314. similar

  1315. there's

  1316. a

  1317. devouring

  1318. fire

  1319. atop

  1320. Mount

  1321. Sinai

  1322. consuming

  1323. everything

  1324. that

  1325. dares

  1326. to

  1327. cross

  1328. its

  1329. paths

  1330. and

  1331. the

  1332. clouds

  1333. with

  1334. billowing

  1335. crowds

  1336. with

  1337. the

  1338. massive

  1339. cauliflower

  1340. like

  1341. shape

  1342. just

  2151. behold

  2152. I

  2153. stand

  2154. at

  2155. the

  2156. door

  2157. and

  2158. knock

  2159. if

  2160. anyone

  2161. hears

  2162. my

  2163. voice

  2164. and

  2165. opens

  2166. the

  2167. door

  2168. I

  2169. will

  2170. come

  2171. in

  2172. to

  2173. him

  2174. and

  2175. eat

  2176. with

  2177. him

  2178. and

  2179. he

  2180. with

  2181. me

  2182. Jesus

  2183. this

  2184. is

  2185. his

  2186. invitation

  2187. he

  2188. wants

  2189. to

  2190. dwell

  2191. with

  2192. you

  2193. he

  2194. wants

  2195. to

  2196. dwell

  2197. within

  2198. you

  2199. will

  2200. you

  2201. renounce

  2202. your

  2203. idols

  2204. and

  2205. pledge

  2206. allegiance

  2207. to

  2208. Jesus

  2209. will

  2210. you

  2211. surrender

  2212. your

  2213. life

  2214. to

  2215. him

  2216. consecrate

  2217. yourself

  2218. to

  2219. him

  2220. say

  2221. take

  2222. my

  2223. life

  2224. and

  2225. let

  2226. it

  2227. be

  2228. consecrated

  2229. Lord

  2230. to

  2231. thee

  2232. he

  2233. wants

  2234. to

  2235. tabernacle

  2236. within

  2237. you

  2238. and

  2239. make

  2240. you

  2241. his

  2242. dwelling

  2243. place

  2244. God's

  2245. grace

  2246. here

  2247. is so

  2248. amazing

  2249. but

  2250. that's

  2251. not

  2252. the

  2253. end

  2254. of

  2255. it

  2256. let's

  2257. return

  2258. to

  2259. the

  2260. tabernacle

  2261. in

  2262. Exodus

  2263. 25

  2264. just

  2265. once

  2266. more

  2267. here

  2268. God's

  2269. gracious

  2270. condescension

  2271. continues

  2272. in that

  2273. he invites

  2274. us

  2275. to

  2276. give

  2277. to

  2278. and

  2279. work

  2280. for

  2281. the

  2282. construction

  2283. of

  2284. his

  2285. dwelling

  2286. place

  2287. among

  2288. us

  2289. he

  2290. says

  2291. in

  2292. Exodus

    Exodus 25:2

  2293. 25

  2294. verse

  2295. 2

  2296. speak

  2297. to

  2298. the

  2299. people

  2300. of

  2301. Israel

  2302. that

  2303. they

  2304. take

  2305. for

  2306. me

  2307. a

  2308. contribution

  2309. from

  2310. every

  2311. man

  2312. whose

  2313. heart

  2314. moves

  2315. him

  2316. you

  2317. shall

  2318. receive

  2319. the

  2320. contribution

  2321. for

  2322. me

  2323. that

  2324. means

  2325. the

  2326. contribution

  2327. the

  2328. people

  2329. are

  2330. to

  2331. make

  2332. is

  2333. voluntary

  2334. chapter

  2335. 35

  2336. is

  2337. even

  2338. more

  2339. emphatic

  2340. about

  2341. this

  2342. it

  2343. says

  2344. in

  2345. verse

  2346. 5

  2347. take

  2348. from

  2349. among

  2350. you

  2351. a

  2352. contribution

  2353. to

  2354. the

  2355. Lord

  2356. whoever

  2357. is

  2358. of

  2359. a

  2360. generous

  2361. heart

  2362. let

  2363. him

  2364. bring

  2365. the

  2366. Lord's

  2367. contribution

  2368. this

  2369. voluntary

  2370. aspect

  2371. of

  2372. the

  2373. contribution

  2374. frames

  2375. the

  2376. entire

  2377. section

  2378. of

  2379. verses

  2380. 21

  2381. to

  2382. 29

  2383. it

  2384. begins

  2385. by

  2386. saying

  2387. this

  2388. and

  2389. they

  2390. came

  2391. everyone

  2392. whose

  2393. heart

  2394. stirred

  2395. him

  2396. and

  2397. everyone

  2398. whose

  2399. spirit

  2400. moved

  2401. him

  2402. and

  2403. brought

  2404. the

  2405. Lord's

  2406. contribution

  2407. to be

  2408. used

  2409. for

  2410. the

  2411. tenth

  2412. of

  2413. meeting

  2414. and

  2415. for

  2416. all

  2417. its

  2418. service

  2419. and

  2420. for

  2421. the

  2422. holy

  2423. garments

  2424. then

  2425. that

  2426. same

  2427. section

  2428. ends

  2429. by

  2430. saying

  2431. this

  2432. all

  2433. the

  2434. men

  2435. and

  2436. women

  2437. the

  2438. people

  2439. of

  2440. Israel

  2441. whose

  2442. heart

  2443. moved

  2444. them

  2445. to

  2446. bring

  2447. anything

  2448. for

  2449. the

  2450. work

  2451. that

  2452. the

  2453. Lord

  2454. had

  2455. commanded

  2456. by

  2457. Moses

  2458. to

  2459. be

  2460. done

  2461. brought

  2462. it

  2463. as

  2464. a

  2465. free

  2466. will

  2467. offering

  2468. to

  2469. the

  2470. Lord

  2471. this

  2472. is

  2473. not

  2474. a

  2475. mandatory

  2476. tithe

  2477. the

  2478. 10%

  2479. that

  2480. God's

  2481. people

  2482. were

  2483. required

  2484. to

  2485. give

  2486. commanded

  2487. to

  2488. give

  2489. this

  2490. is

  2491. a

  2492. free

  2493. will

  2494. offering

  2495. that

  2496. goes

  2497. above

  2498. and

  2499. beyond

  2500. the

  2501. requirements

  2502. this

  2503. is

  2504. a

  2505. voluntary

  2506. gift

  2507. and

  2508. this

  2509. voluntary

  2510. aspect

  2511. of the

  2512. collection

  2513. is

  2514. intentionally

  2515. contrasted

  2516. with

  2517. the

  2518. narrative

  2519. of the

  2520. golden

  2521. calf

  2522. that

  2523. we'll

  2524. get

  2525. to

  2526. later

  2527. when

  2528. the

  2529. Israelites

  2530. rebel

  2531. against

  2532. the

  2533. Lord

  2534. during

  2535. Moses

  2536. absence

  2537. and

  2538. demand

  2539. that

  2540. Aaron

  2541. produce

  2542. for

  2543. them

  2544. gods

  2545. who

  2546. shall

  2547. go

  2548. before

  2549. them

  2550. idols

  2551. Aaron

  2552. says

  2553. this

  2554. in

  2555. chapter

  2556. 32

  2557. verse

  2558. 2

  2559. take

  2560. off

  2561. the

  2562. rings

  2563. of

  2564. gold

  2565. that

  2566. are

  2567. in

  2568. the

  2569. ears

  2570. of

  2571. your

  2572. wives

  2573. your

  2574. sons

  2575. and

  2576. your

  2577. daughters

  2578. and

  2579. bring

  2580. them

  2581. to

  2582. me

  2583. it's

  2584. not

  2585. voluntary

  2586. it's

  2587. forced

  2588. when

  2589. it comes

  2590. to

  2591. building

  2592. an

  2593. idol

  2594. Aaron

  2595. demands

  2596. the

  2597. gold

  2598. but

  2599. when

  2600. it

  2601. comes

  2602. to

  2603. building

  2604. the

  2605. tabernacle

  2606. God

  2607. commands

  2608. Moses

  2609. to

  2610. ask

  2611. for

  2612. it

  2613. why

  2614. because

  2615. as it

  2616. says

  2617. in

  2618. 2nd

  2619. Corinthians

  2620. 9

  2621. 7

  2622. each

  2623. one

  2624. must

  2625. give

  2626. as he

  2627. has

  2628. decided

  2629. in

  2630. his

  2631. heart

  2632. not

  2633. reluctantly

  2634. or

  2635. under

  2636. compulsion

  2637. for

  2638. God

  2639. loves

  2640. a

  2641. cheerful

  2642. giver

  2643. God

  2644. has

  2645. every

  2646. authority

  2647. every

  2648. right

  2649. to

  2650. demand

  2651. everything

  2652. we

  2653. have

  2654. of

  2655. us

  2656. but

  2657. instead

  2658. he

  2659. asks

  2660. of

  2661. it

  2662. he

  2663. wants

  2664. us

  2665. willingly

  2666. to

  2667. give

  2668. to

  2669. him

  2670. and

  2671. serve

  2672. him

  2673. this

  2674. is

  2675. amazing

  2676. think

  2677. about

  2678. it

  2679. God

  2680. God

  2681. you

  2682. want

  2683. me

  2684. to

  2685. give

  2686. something

  2687. to

  2688. you

  2689. you

  2690. the

  2691. king

  2692. would

  2693. ask

  2694. something

  2695. of

  2696. me

  2697. a

  2698. pauper

  2699. do

  2700. you

  2701. really

  2702. mean

  2703. that

  2704. there's

  2705. something

  2706. I

  2707. can

  2708. actually

  2709. do

  2710. for

  2711. you

  2712. that

  2713. there's

  2714. something

  2715. I

  2716. can

  2717. actually

  2718. give

  2719. to

  2720. you

  2721. what

  2722. greater

  2723. honor

  2724. can

  2725. a

  2726. human

  2727. being

  2728. have

  2729. than

  2730. this

  2731. to

  2732. bring

  2733. willingly

  2734. a

  2735. contribution

  2736. to

  2737. the

  2738. Lord

  2739. to

  2740. be

  2741. able

  2742. to

  2743. give

  2744. to

  2745. him

  2746. from

  2747. what

  2748. he

  2749. has

  2750. given

  2751. to

  2752. us

  2753. to

  2754. be

  2755. able

  2756. to

  2757. serve

  2758. him

  2759. with

  2760. what

  2761. he

  2762. has

  2763. enabled

  2764. us

  2765. to

  2766. do

  2767. so

  2768. the

  2769. men

  2770. and

  2771. women

  2772. of

  2773. Israel

  2774. donated

  2775. valuables

  2776. precious

  2777. commodities

  2778. and they

  2779. volunteered

  2780. their time

  2781. and skill

  2782. for the

  2783. construction

  2784. of the

  2785. tabernacle

  2786. not because

  2787. they had

  2788. to

  2789. but because

  2790. they wanted

  2791. to

  2792. because

  2793. their hearts

  2794. stirred

  2795. them to

  2796. and their

  2797. spirit

  2798. moved

  2799. them to

  2800. my

  2801. gold

  2802. earring

  2803. can

  2804. become a

  2805. part

  2806. of the

  2807. ark

  2808. of the

  2809. covenant

  2810. the

  2811. linens

  2812. that I

  2813. weave

  2814. with my

  2815. hands

  2816. and the

  2817. leather

  2818. that I

  2819. tan

  2820. with my

  2821. hands

  2822. can

  2823. become

  2824. the

  2825. covering

  2826. for

  2827. God's

  2828. holy

  2829. dwelling

  2830. place

  2831. by all

  2832. means

  2833. take

  2834. it

  2835. what

  2836. else

  2837. can I

  2838. do

  2839. what

  2840. else

  2841. can I

  2842. give

  2843. to my

  2844. Lord

  2845. my

  2846. king

  2847. in

  2848. Exodus

  2849. 38

  2850. 21

  2851. to

  2852. 31

  2853. which

  2854. we

  2855. read

  2856. earlier

  2857. there's

  2858. a

  2859. careful

  2860. accounting

  2861. of the

  2862. contribution

  2863. that the

  2864. people

  2865. brought

  2866. recorded

  2867. by

  2868. Ithamar

  2869. the son

  2870. of Aaron

  2871. the priest

  2872. every time

  2873. people give

  2874. money they want

  2875. to know how

  2876. their money is

  2877. being used

  2878. that it's

  2879. being stewarded

  2880. wisely

  2881. that's why we as a church

  2882. also take particular care

  2883. to make sure every

  2884. offering and every expense

  2885. is noted

  2886. and cataloged

  2887. and maybe

  2888. and maybe

  2889. one day we too

  2890. will get a chance

  2891. to use

  2892. some of the money

  2893. for a sanctuary

  2894. to worship God

  2895. in

  2896. because it's

  2897. hard-earned money

  2898. that God's people

  2899. have generously

  2900. given

  2901. and if you look

  2902. at Ithamar's

  2903. bookkeeping

  2904. in chapter 38

  2905. it says

  2906. that the people's

  2907. offerings amounted

  2908. to 29 talents

  2909. and 730

  2910. shekels of gold

  2911. that's a total

  2912. of 2,210.65 pounds

  2913. of gold

  2914. the current gold

  2915. price per pound

  2916. is said to be

  2917. 22,103 dollars

  2918. so that's nearly

  2919. 50 million dollars

  2920. worth of gold

  2921. that God's people

  2922. willingly brought

  2923. as an offering

  2924. to him

  2925. I did the math

  2926. for the silver

  2927. and the bronze too

  2928. but I won't get

  2929. into that

  2930. it's just total

  2931. it's 52 million

  2932. or so

  2933. dollars

  2934. not counting

  2935. the value

  2936. of all the

  2937. precious stones

  2938. the jewels

  2939. the dyed yarn

  2940. this is a massive

  2941. financial undertaking

2942. but where in the world

  2943. did the Israelites

  2944. get all these

  2945. after all

  2946. they're

  2947. but former

  2948. Egyptian slaves

  2949. fleeing captivity

  2950. and wandering

  2951. in the wilderness

  2952. where in the world

  2953. did they get

  2954. these precious

  2955. commodities

  2956. we see a clue

  2957. in Exodus 35

  2958. 22-23

  2959. it says

  2960. men and women

  2961. brought brooches

  2962. and earrings

  2963. and signet rings

  2964. and armlets

  2965. and all sorts

  2966. of gold objects

  2967. and everyone

  2968. who possessed

  2969. blue or purple

  2970. or scarlet yarns

  2971. or fine linen

  2972. or goat's hair

  2973. or tanned rammed skin

  2974. or goat skins

  2975. brought them

  2976. in other words

  2977. they're not going

  2978. mining somewhere

  2979. for gold

  2980. they're bringing

  2981. the gold

  2982. gold and silver

  2983. and bronze

  2984. and precious stones

  2985. that they already

  2986. have

  2987. they're not

  2988. engaging in any

  2989. kind of maritime

  2990. trade

  2991. for these expensive

  2992. dyed yarn

  2993. they're bringing

  2994. what they already

  2995. had

  2996. or what they

  2997. could make

  2998. with what they

  2999. already have

  3000. and if you look

  3001. back at Exodus

  3002. 12-35-36

  3003. when the Israelites

  3004. were leaving Egypt

  3005. it says that

  3006. they asked the

  3007. Egyptians for

  3008. what?

  3009. silver and gold

  3010. jewelry and clothing

  3011. and the Lord

  3012. had given the people

  3013. favor in the side

  3014. of the Egyptians

  3015. so that they let

  3016. them have what

  3017. they asked

  3018. thus they plunder

  3019. the Egyptians

  3020. they are building

  3021. the tabernacle

  3022. with materials

  3023. from their plunder

  3024. their peaceful

  3025. plunder

  3026. of the Egyptians

  3027. which by the way

  3028. they had

  3029. only because

  3030. the Lord

  3031. had already

  3032. disposed the Egyptians

  3033. to be favorable

  3034. and generous

  3035. toward them

  3036. so in essence

  3037. the Israelites

  3038. are giving back

  3039. to God

  3040. a portion of

  3041. what he has

  3042. given to them

  3043. in fact

  3044. that's the case

  3045. with everything

  3046. we bring to God

  3047. David captures

  3048. this sentiment

  3049. in 1 Chronicles

  3050. 29-14

  3051. he gathers

  3052. all the supplies

  3053. for the construction

  3054. of the temple

  3055. and then he thanks

  3056. God

  3057. and then he says

  3058. this

  3059. but who am I

  3060. and what is

  3061. my people

  3062. that we should

  3063. be able thus

  3064. to offer

  3065. willingly

  3066. for all things

  3067. come from you

  3068. and of your own

  3069. have we given you

3070. how can we be credited

  3071. with bringing contribution

  3072. for the Lord's temple

3073. when all that we have

  3074. is actually from him

  3075. in the first place

  3076. but that's the privilege

  3077. that God gives us

  3078. he counts that

  3079. the same truth

  3080. applies to us

3081. in our new covenant context

  3082. I mentioned earlier

  3083. of how God's people

  3084. we the church

  3085. are God's temple

  3086. and that God's spirit

  3087. dwells in us

  3088. God is still

  3089. in the business

  3090. of building a dwelling

  3091. place for himself

  3092. 1 Peter 2 5

  3093. says that we ourselves

  3094. like living stones

  3095. are being built up

  3096. as a spiritual house

  3097. as the house

  3098. of the spirit

  3099. of God

  3100. we ourselves

  3101. are the tabernacle

  3102. that God is building

  3103. as a dwelling place

  3104. for himself

  3105. and the Lord

  3106. invites us

  3107. to contribute to it

  3108. to give to it

  3109. to work for it

  3110. Ephesians 4 12

  3111. uses that same metaphor

  3112. of construction again

3113. to say that we are

  3114. building up the body

  3115. of Christ

3116. when we use our gifts

  3117. when each part

  3118. is working properly

3119. we make the body grow

  3120. and it builds itself

  3121. up in love

  3122. we are being joined

  3123. together

  3124. as God's dwelling place

  3125. brick by brick

  3126. and each time

3127. we bear with one another

  3128. each time

  3129. we forgive

  3130. one another

  3131. each time

  3132. we serve

  3133. one another

  3134. each time

  3135. we speak the truth

  3136. in love

  3137. to one another

  3138. each time

  3139. we encourage

  3140. one another

  3141. exhort one another

  3142. from the scriptures

  3143. each time

  3144. we sing

  3145. to one another

  3146. the truths

  3147. of the gospel

  3148. we are contributing

  3149. to the building up

  3150. of God's

  3151. very dwelling place

  3152. that's the privilege

  3153. we have

  3154. in serving

  3155. one another

  3156. we

  3157. even though

  3158. we are so weak

  3159. and so deficient

  3160. and so frail

  3161. we get to contribute

  3162. to the building up

  3163. of God's dwelling place

  3164. I've noticed

  3165. recently that

  3166. some of the children

  3167. in our church

  3168. have been

  3169. putting in

  3170. their own offerings

  3171. into our offering box

  3172. during worship

  3173. Jen

  3174. counts

  3175. and records

  3176. and deposits

  3177. the offerings

  3178. as our church

  3179. administrator

  3180. and she's been

  3181. telling me

  3182. that she's been

  3183. finding offering envelopes

3184. with a dollar in it

3185. and one of the children's

  3186. names on it

  3187. and she's also been

  3188. finding loose change

  3189. in the offering boxes

  3190. without any name

  3191. and of course

  3192. our children

  3193. don't work jobs

  3194. so they're

  3195. giving their parents

  3196. money

  3197. money that they got

  3198. from her

3199. or maybe from an uncle

  3200. or something like that

  3201. and yet

  3202. when I see them

  3203. doing it

  3204. when I catch them

  3205. doing it sometimes

  3206. they do it

  3207. with such joy

  3208. and eagerness

  3209. that they get

3210. to be part of this

  3211. that they get

  3212. to give something

  3213. of their own

  3214. and that's what

  3215. we get to do

  3216. what God's

  3217. graciously provided

  3218. to us

  3219. we can use that

  3220. to give to him

  3221. what God has

  3222. graciously gifted us

  3223. with

  3224. we get to

  3225. serve him

  3226. render service

  3227. to him

  3228. the health

  3229. that God

  3230. has given us

  3231. the energy

  3232. that God

  3233. has given us

  3234. the resources

  3235. God has given us

  3236. the money

  3237. that God

  3238. has given us

  3239. the experience

  3240. that God

  3241. has given us

  3242. the skills

  3243. that God

  3244. has given us

  3245. the gifts

  3246. that God

  3247. has given us

  3248. let us all

  3249. eagerly

  3250. and cheerfully

  3251. give back

  3252. to God

  3253. for the building

  3254. up of his

  3255. dwelling place

  3256. among us

  3257. and

  3258. that building

  3259. will one day

  3260. be completed

  3261. and when it's

  3262. completed

  3263. this is what's

  3264. going to happen

  3265. in Revelation

    Revelation 21:2–4

  3266. 21

  3267. verses 2 to 4

  3268. and I saw

  3269. the holy city

  3270. new Jerusalem

  3271. this is the

  3272. dwelling place

  3273. of God

  3274. coming down

  3275. out of heaven

  3276. from God

  3277. prepared as a

  3278. bride

  3279. adorned for

  3280. her husband

  3281. that's us

  3282. we are that

  3283. dwelling place

  3284. and I heard

  3285. a loud voice

  3286. from the throne

  3287. saying

  3288. behold

  3289. the dwelling

  3290. place of God

  3291. is with man

  3292. he will dwell

  3293. with them

  3294. and they

  3295. will be

  3296. his people

  3297. and God

  3298. himself

  3299. will be

  3300. with them

  3301. as

  3302. their God

  3303. so let's look

  3304. forward to that

  3305. day

  3306. and keep building

  3307. let's pray together

  3308. Father we love

  3309. you

  3310. you are so

  3311. glorious

  3312. so grand

  3313. majestic

  3314. beyond our

  3315. comprehension

  3316. and yet

  3317. you

  3318. sent your

  3319. only son

  3320. Jesus

  3321. so that

  3322. in his

  3323. condescension

  3324. in his

  3325. humiliation

  3326. we might

  3327. get to know

  3328. you

  3329. that we

  3330. might

  3331. be saved

  3332. that we

  3333. might be

  3334. consecrated

  3335. as your

  3336. dwelling place

  3337. Father thank

  3338. you

  3339. for this

  3340. grace

  3341. Lord let

  3342. this truth

  3343. transform

  3344. the way

  3345. we live

  3346. as we

  3347. remember

  3348. that we

  3349. are the

  3350. temple

  3351. of the

  3352. Holy

  3353. Spirit

  3354. and that

  3355. in every

  3356. interaction

  3357. with one

  3358. another

  3359. we are

  3360. building

  3361. up

  3362. your

  3363. home

  3364. and as

  3365. we do

  3366. that

  3367. Lord fill

  3368. us more

  3369. and more

  3370. with your

  3371. Spirit

  3372. give us

  3373. a greater

  3374. foretaste

  3375. of that

  3376. eternal

  3377. dwelling

  3378. in the new

  3379. heavens and the

  3380. new earth

  3381. when you will be

  3382. with us

  3383. forever

  3384. we look

  3385. forward to

  3386. that

  3387. come Lord

  3388. soon

  3389. Lord

  3390. in Jesus

  3391. name we

  3392. pray

  3393. amen
