  1. Thank you very much, Sean. That was very kind. It is always a blessing to be able to come down and preach here or just be with you all.

  2. I can't begin to tell you how much joy it brings to me when, you know, the amount of times that Sean and I prayed at King of Grace for what I see now.

  3. So it's an answer to prayer, right? This is a miracle. This is really amazing.

  4. And so I think sometimes, like, I don't even know you and I prayed for you. What a blessing, right?

  5. I mean, yeah, I hope you all are as encouraged to be here on a Sunday as I am to stand here and look at and see you all on a Sunday.

  6. So, yes. All right. He wants me to move on, no doubt. So we're going to be preaching from Jonah today.

  7. And we'll be reading, we'll start our reading, actually, in Jonah 3, 6, and we'll go to Jonah 4, 4.

  8. I'm only going to be preaching from Jonah 4, 1 through 4, but we're going to go ahead and, for context, pick it up a little earlier than that.

  9. If you're not familiar with where Jonah might be, it's after, for instance, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Lamenta, it's after all of those.

  10. It's right after Obadiah, that one pager. And when you get to heaven, Obadiah is going to be there and he's going to say, did you read my book?

  11. Don't walk in the door and say, Obahu. All right. So make sure you read Obadiah's book, too.

  12. All right. So just to give you some background, because we're going to drop it in kind of late into Jonah here.

  13. Jonah initially starts in chapter 1, where Jonah is being called by God to go to preach to the Ninevites.

  14. That's a country, a city in the country of Assyria. They're the enemy of Israel, and Jonah has no interest in following God's words.

  15. So in chapter 1, we see him, instead of going east to Nineveh, he goes west, about 5,000 kilometers.

  16. That's his goal, to a city called Tarshish, and he runs away in the other direction.

  17. That boat eventually, God brings a storm and causes the boat to flounder.

  18. The sailors are trying to keep the boat afloat.

  19. Jonah says, I'm your problem here. Throw me overboard, and the seas will get quiet.

  20. They don't want to do that, but eventually they do. They throw him overboard.

  21. The seas quiet down, and chapter 1 ends with Jonah being swallowed by a fish.

  22. Chapter 2, we have Jonah's little experience in the belly of the fish going down to the bottom of the ocean.

  23. And if you were to pick up in there, in the end of chapter 2 is Jonah's resolution to it.

  24. It says, when my life was fainting away, I remember the Lord, and my prayer came upon you into your holy temple.

  25. Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love.

  26. But I, with a voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you what I have vowed I will pay.

  27. Salvation belongs to the Lord.

  28. And the Lord spoke to the fish and vomited Jonah out onto dry land.

  29. Now, just as a real caveat there to understanding that a little bit, Jonah is kind of saying,

  30. hey, those people out there who worship idols, they don't deserve your salvation.

  31. But me, I do.

  32. Because I follow what you say.

  33. I deserve your salvation.

  34. All right, Jonah 3, he now gets to Nineveh, and God again calls him to cry out to Nineveh.

  35. And he says that he is to call out, in verse 4,

  36. yet 40 days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

  37. Now, unlike every other missionary I have ever met,

  38. the people immediately repent and turn to God.

  39. And that makes Jonah really angry.

  40. We're going to pick up in chapter 3, verse 6.

  41. All right.

  42. Now, the word of the Lord reached the king of Nineveh,

  43. and he arose from his throne, removed his robe,

  44. covered himself in sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

  45. He issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh,

  46. by the decree of the king and his nobles,

  47. let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything.

  48. Let them not feed or drink water,

  49. but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth,

  50. and let them call out mightily to God.

  51. Let everyone turn from his evil way

  52. and from the violence that is in his hand.

  53. Who knows?

  54. God may turn and relent

  55. and turn from his fierce anger

  56. so that we may not perish.

  57. When God saw what they did,

  58. how they turned from their evil way,

  59. God relented from the disaster

  60. he had said he would do to them,

  61. and he did not do it.

  62. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly,

  63. and he was angry.

  64. And he prayed to the Lord and said,

  65. O Lord,

  66. is not this what I said

  67. when I was yet in my own country?

  68. That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish,

  69. for I knew that you were a gracious God

  70. and merciful,

  71. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love,

  72. and relenting from disaster.

  73. Therefore,

  74. therefore now,

  75. O Lord,

  76. please take my life from me,

  77. for it is better for me to die than to live.

  78. And the Lord said,

  79. do you do well to be angry?

  80. May God bless the reading

  81. and the hearing of his word.

  82. Let me pray.

  83. Father,

  84. Father,

  85. thank you,

  86. Lord God,

  87. for these words.

  88. Thank you for the book of Jonah.

  89. We thank you for what it reveals

  90. in our own hearts.

  91. Lord,

  92. today,

  93. as we prepare to preach and hear,

  94. Lord,

  95. I just ask

  96. that you would prepare our hearts

  97. to receive the word.

  98. Lord,

  99. give us ears to hear,

  100. eyes to see,

  101. hearts that are soft.

  102. And Lord,

  103. be faithful to your promise

  104. that your word never goes out

  105. and comes back void.

  106. Transform us today.

  107. Conform us to the image of your son.

  108. In Jesus' name,

  109. Amen.

  110. Amen.

  111. Amen.

  112. So the title of today's message

  113. is,

  114. Do You Do Well?

  115. Imagine

  116. you were to sit down

  117. in your living room

  118. this evening

  119. and God

  120. met you there.

  121. Like,

  122. literally pops up.

  123. Boom.

  124. There he is.

  125. And he says,

  126. Do you do well?

  127. Now,

  128. this is God

  129. asking you.

  130. This is the God

  131. who

  132. nothing under the sun

  133. is hidden from.

  134. This is the God

  135. who sees in the dark

  136. as if it were light.

  137. The God

  138. who has written

  139. all the number

  140. of your days

  141. in his book

  142. before there was one.

  143. This is the God

  144. who knits you together

  145. in your mother's womb.

  146. Who knows

  147. the words

  148. of your mouth

  149. before they

  150. are spoken.

  151. Who knows

  152. the thoughts

  153. of your mind

  154. before you think them.

  155. And who knows

  156. the desires

  157. of your heart

  158. before you recognize them.

  159. Imagine God

  160. our God

  161. enters into

  162. your room

  163. tonight

  164. and says,

  165. Do you do well?

  166. Do you do well,

  167. Stephen?

  168. Do you do well,

  169. Enza?

  170. Do you do well,

  171. Taylor?

  172. Do you do well,

  173. Mike?

  174. What do you say?

  175. This is God.

  176. He's not going

  177. to let you

  178. get away

  179. with this casual

  180. I'm good,

  181. all set.

  182. He's not going

  183. to let you

  184. get away

  185. with that shallow

  186. answer

  187. because he

  188. already knows.

  189. He already knows

  190. that you're not

  191. all good

  192. and you're not

  193. all set.

  194. He already knows

  195. the depth

  196. of your depression.

  197. He already knows

  198. the hopelessness

  199. you feel,

  200. the frustration,

  201. the bitterness,

  202. the anger

  203. that you're experiencing.

  204. He knows

  205. all of those

  206. things already.

  207. See,

  208. he's not going

  209. to let you go

  210. because

  211. he loves you

  212. and he wants

  213. to see you

  214. set free.

  215. he won't

  216. let you go

  217. with that

  218. shallow answer

  219. of all set

  220. because

  221. he is working,

  222. actively working

  223. in your life

  224. to conform you

  225. to his own image.

  226. See,

  227. this is the story

  228. of Jonah.

  229. In truth,

  230. the sailors,

  231. the fish,

  232. even the Ninevites

  233. really,

  234. are background

  235. to what God

  236. is doing

  237. in the life

  238. of Jonah

  239. to conform

  240. him to himself.

  241. God is,

  242. throughout the story,

  243. showing Jonah

  244. his own

  245. personal idols.

  246. That is,

  247. the things

  248. that Jonah

  249. holds more valuable

  250. than God.

  251. Namely,

  252. his love

  253. for his nation

  254. and his own

  255. self-righteousness.

  256. Let me just say

  257. that God

  258. is after something

  259. in every one

  260. of you

  261. as well.

  262. Every one

  263. of us

  264. has things

  265. that keep us

  266. from wholeheartedly

  267. loving

  268. and following

  269. God.

  270. Every one

  271. of us

  272. has,

  273. at some point,

  274. drawn a line

  275. in the sand

  276. and said,

  277. God,

  278. I will follow

  279. you anywhere.

  280. I will do

  281. anything you ask

  282. except maybe

  283. this thing

  284. here

  285. that I've put

  286. in this box.

  287. I don't want

  288. to cross

  289. that line.

  290. But anything

  291. other than that,

  292. I'll do.

  293. See,

  294. you can apply

  295. it in your life

  296. as well,

  297. I'm sure.

  298. You've all,

  299. we've all

  300. drawn that line

  301. and said,

  302. I'm not

  303. willing to go

  304. past this.

  305. We've all

  306. put a box

  307. around something

  308. and said,

  309. I'm just not

  310. willing to give

  311. that thing up.

  312. But I'll do

  313. anything else.

  314. See,

  315. but those

  316. lines you

  317. don't want

  318. to cross,

  319. that box

  320. that you

  321. want to keep

  322. that special

  323. thing in,

  324. those are

  325. your idols.

  326. In the first

  327. three chapters

  328. of Jonah,

  329. we see

  330. some of

  331. Jonah's

  332. idols.

  333. Jonah

  334. runs

  335. from God

  336. because he

  337. does not

  338. want to

  339. take God's

  340. message

  341. to Nineveh.

  342. Why?

  343. Jonah

  344. knew

  345. that if

  346. he declared

  347. God's

  348. message,

  349. the Ninevites

  350. would repent.

  351. And if

  352. the Ninevites

  353. repent,

  354. repent,

  355. then God

  356. will have

  357. mercy

  358. and relent

  359. and not

  360. destroy them

  361. as he

  362. promised.

  363. The kingdom

  364. of Israel

  365. hated

  366. Nineveh.

  367. They hated

  368. the Assyrians.

  369. they hated

  370. them because

  371. they were

  372. an empire

  373. that was

  374. going after

  375. the same

  376. lands,

  377. the same

  378. contested

  379. lands that

  380. they were

  381. fighting over.

  382. They hated

  383. the Assyrians

  384. because they

  385. were evil.

  386. They were

  387. violent.

  388. And they

  389. hated the

  390. Assyrians

  391. because they

  392. weren't

  393. Israelites.

  394. Jonah hated

  395. the Ninevites

  396. because they

  397. were not

  398. us.

  399. They were

  400. them.

  401. The Ninevites

  402. were Jonah's

  403. enemy.

  404. And because

  405. he wanted

  406. nothing to

  407. do with

  408. compassion

  409. and mercy

  410. on his

  411. enemies,

  412. he had

  413. run away.

  414. Jonah

  415. wanted the

  416. destruction

  417. of the

  418. Ninevites

  419. and all

  420. the Assyrians.

  421. Jonah drew

  422. a line in

  423. the sand

  424. and it

  425. was called

  426. judgment

  427. and destruction.

  428. God

  429. called him

  430. to step

  431. over that

  432. line and

  433. follow him

  434. into

  435. compassion

  436. and mercy.

  437. Jonah put

  438. a box

  439. around his

  440. thing called

  441. national

  442. interest

  443. and God

  444. asked him

  445. to drop

  446. that precious

  447. box of

  448. national

  449. interest

  450. and embrace

  451. God's

  452. plan

  453. to have

  454. compassion

  455. and mercy

  456. on Nineveh.

  457. National

  458. interest

  459. was an

  460. idol

  461. for Jonah

  462. and God

  463. was calling

  464. him to

  465. throw that

  466. down,

  467. to step

  468. over that

  469. line

  470. and follow

  471. him.

  472. As we

  473. see in

  474. chapter 4

  475. verse 1,

  476. God's

  477. compassion

  478. and mercy

  479. made Jonah

  480. angry.

  481. In fact,

  482. a direct

  483. translation of

  484. that word

  485. anger would

  486. be it made

  487. him burn.

  488. He was

  489. furious with

  490. God.

  491. He was

  492. seething.

  493. Can you

  494. relate to

  495. that?

  496. I can.

  497. I can.

  498. Yeah.

  499. In 1991,

  500. February 24th,

  501. remember Sean

  502. said I was

  503. in the

  504. military,

  505. my battalion

  506. crossed into

  507. enemy territory.

  508. We crossed

  509. into Iraq.

  510. We did

  511. everything

  512. that we

  513. had ever

  514. been trained

  515. to do

  516. and our

  517. enemy broke

  518. before us

  519. and ran.

  520. And we

  521. pursued.

  522. When they

  523. stood their

  524. ground,

  525. we fought

  526. and we

  527. destroyed

  528. them.

  529. Just like

  530. we were

  531. trained to

  532. do.

  533. We did

  534. our job

  535. and we

  536. did it

  537. well.

  538. At 8

  539. a.m.

  540. on the

  541. 28th,

  542. we're

  543. looking across

  544. a valley.

  545. We prepared

  546. to engage

  547. the enemy

  548. and a

  549. call came

  550. over our

  551. radios and

  552. said,

  553. cease

  554. fire,

  555. stand

  556. down.

  557. It was

  558. over.

  559. The

  560. president

  561. had called

  562. a cease

  563. fire.

  564. We had

  565. completed

  566. his

  567. objectives.

  568. We had

  569. done

  570. everything

  571. he intended

  572. us to

  573. do.

  574. And so

  575. we stood

  576. down and

  577. watched the

  578. enemy move

  579. off over the

  580. ridge line.

  581. and I

  582. was furious.

  583. All I

  584. wanted was

  585. their

  586. destruction.

  587. That is

  588. all I

  589. wanted.

  590. I had no

  591. interest in

  592. mercy or

  593. compassion,

  594. only destruction.

  595. But my

  596. president had

  597. other ideas.

  598. And so we

  599. stood down.

  600. See,

  601. in some

  602. way I

  603. felt like

  604. I had been

  605. cheated.

  606. I had been

  607. betrayed.

  608. My

  609. president had

  610. somehow broken

  611. covenant with

  612. us, with me

  613. personally.

  614. At the time,

  615. I didn't see

  616. the president's

  617. order as

  618. being good.

  619. Him being

  620. faithful to

  621. his word

  622. made me

  623. angry.

  624. In fact, I

  625. felt it was

  626. evil.

  627. In some

  628. sense, this

  629. is what

  630. Jonah felt

  631. as well.

  632. Do you

  633. see in

  634. verse 2

  635. that Jonah

  636. prayed to

  637. the Lord?

  638. Do you

  639. see in your

  640. Bible that

  641. the Lord

  642. is in

  643. all caps,

  644. right?

  645. What that

  646. stands for

  647. is the

  648. word

  649. Yahweh.

  650. Yahweh is

  651. Israel's

  652. personal

  653. name for

  654. God.

  655. When you

  656. see that

  657. personal

  658. name for

  659. God,

  660. that's

  661. Israel's

  662. creator

  663. God.

  664. It's the

  665. God of

  666. Abraham and

  667. Isaac and

  668. Jacob.

  669. It's the

  670. God who

  671. brought them

  672. out of

  673. slavery in

  674. Egypt,

  675. defeated

  676. all of

  677. their enemies

  678. and set

  679. them up in

  680. the promised

  681. land.

  682. God.

  683. This is

  684. the God

  685. of

  686. covenants,

  687. their

  688. personal

  689. God,

  690. the God

  691. who said,

  692. I will

  693. be your

  694. God and

  695. you will

  696. be my

  697. people.

  698. Yahweh

  699. was the

  700. God of

  701. Israel

  702. and Jonah

  703. was an

  704. Israelite.

  705. In

  706. Jonah's

  707. mind,

  708. he was

  709. not the

  710. God of

  711. the other

  712. nations.

  713. God of

  714. the Gentile

  715. nations and

  716. he certainly

  717. was not

  718. the God

  719. of the

  720. Assyrians.

  721. To

  722. Jonah,

  723. showing

  724. mercy and

  725. compassion

  726. to the

  727. Assyrians

  728. was a

  729. breach of

  730. contract.

  731. It was a

  732. breaking of

  733. covenant.

  734. To

  735. Jonah,

  736. to relent

  737. from

  738. judgment

  739. and the

  740. associated

  741. destruction,

  742. to show

  743. mercy and

  744. compassion

  745. on the

  746. Assyrians

  747. was to

  748. allow

  749. the enemy

  750. of God's

  751. chosen people

  752. to grow

  753. strong

  754. and threaten

  755. Israel.

  756. To

  757. Jonah,

  758. God's

  759. mercy and

  760. compassion

  761. on the

  762. Ninevites

  763. was not

  764. good.

  765. It was

  766. evil.

  767. And it

  768. made Jonah

  769. furious

  770. with God.

  771. in your

  772. Bible,

  773. verse 1

  774. says,

  775. but it

  776. displeased

  777. Jonah

  778. exceedingly

  779. and he

  780. was angry.

  781. Now,

  782. if you have

  783. footnotes

  784. in your

  785. Bible,

  786. that footnote

  787. may tell

  788. you there's

  789. an alternate

  790. reading of

  791. that first

  792. part.

  793. The alternate

  794. reading would

  795. be,

  796. but it

  797. was exceedingly

  798. evil to

  799. Jonah

  800. and he

  801. burned.

  802. Jonah

  803. was

  804. displeased

  805. with God's

  806. mercy

  807. and compassion.

  808. It made

  809. him angry.

  810. But I

  811. think it

  812. was much

  813. deeper

  814. than that.

  815. See,

  816. Jonah

  817. saw

  818. what God

  819. did as

  820. exceedingly

  821. evil.

  822. And so

  823. he burned

  824. with anger.

  825. He was

  826. so angry,

  827. verse 3

  828. tells us

  829. that he

  830. prayed to

  831. God to

  832. take his

  833. life and

  834. take it

  835. now.

  836. Can you

  837. identify with

  838. that?

  839. Can you

  840. identify with

  841. that sort

  842. of anger?

  843. Have you

  844. been in the

  845. place where

  846. you felt

  847. like God

  848. broke the

  849. contract?

  850. Have you

  851. been in that

  852. place where

  853. you could

  854. not see

  855. any good

  856. God's

  857. need to

  858. do it?

  859. In what

  860. God had

  861. done or

  862. was doing?

  863. In what

  864. he had

  865. allowed to

  866. happen?

  867. Where

  868. somehow,

  869. in truth,

  870. it felt like

  871. what God

  872. was allowing

  873. to happen

  874. was just

  875. evil.

  876. Have you

  877. been so

  878. angry that

  879. you would

  880. just rather

  881. die than

  882. deal with

  883. that situation

  884. or bear

  885. the consequences

  886. of it?

  887. I have.

  888. Most

  889. recently,

  890. and I

  891. give you a

  892. lot of

  893. examples of

  894. this.

  895. Is this

  896. anger thing

  897. seeming repetitive

  898. for me?

  899. Anyway,

  900. most recently,

  901. last May,

  902. not so long

  903. ago,

  904. I had to

  905. decide to

  906. close our

  907. church in

  908. Salem, a

  909. church I

  910. had planted

  911. four years

  912. earlier.

  913. It felt

  914. like God

  915. had made

  916. promises to

  917. me.

  918. I was quite

  919. sure of

  920. it.

  921. I had

  922. people that

  923. prayed with

  924. me.

  925. I got

  926. green lights

  927. from all

  928. sorts of

  929. places.

  930. Four years

  931. earlier,

  932. we had

  933. gone into

  934. Salem and

  935. planted.

  936. I felt

  937. like God

  938. was somehow

  939. breaking

  940. his promises

  941. now.

  942. It felt

  943. like God

  944. was betraying

  945. me in

  946. some sense.

  947. In truth,

  948. it felt

  949. like evil.

  950. I was

  951. angry,

  952. and I

  953. struggled

  954. mightily.

  955. And friends,

  956. I know,

  957. though,

  958. at this

  959. point,

  960. I can look

  961. back and I

  962. say that as

  963. long as I

  964. have idols

  965. in my heart,

  966. even good

  967. things that

  968. I hold

  969. dear,

  970. that I

  971. hold more

  972. tightly maybe

  973. than God,

  974. he will,

  975. in his

  976. goodness and

  977. mercy,

  978. ask me to

  979. give up.

  980. in love,

  981. he will

  982. smash those

  983. idols so

  984. that I

  985. can more

  986. fully follow

  987. him.

  988. So Jonah

  989. cries out

  990. in verse

  991. two to

  992. God,

  993. O

  994. Lord,

  995. is this

  996. not what I

  997. said when I

  998. was in my

  999. country?

  1000. that is

  1001. why I

  1002. made haste

  1003. to flee

  1004. to Tarshish,

  1005. for I

  1006. knew that

  1007. you are

  1008. a God,

  1009. gracious

  1010. God,

  1011. and merciful,

  1012. slow to

  1013. anger,

  1014. and abounding

  1015. in steadfast

  1016. love,

  1017. relenting

  1018. from

  1019. disaster.

  1020. Here,

  1021. Jonah is

  1022. partially

  1023. quoting,

  1024. partially

  1025. paraphrasing

  1026. God's word

  1027. from Exodus

  1028. 34,

  1029. 6,

  1030. and 7.

  1031. The actual

  1032. words of

  1033. God,

  1034. and he's

  1035. speaking to

  1036. Moses here,

  1037. are,

  1038. the Lord,

  1039. the Lord,

  1040. a God,

  1041. merciful and

  1042. gracious,

  1043. slow to

  1044. anger,

  1045. and abounding

  1046. in steadfast

  1047. love and

  1048. faithfulness,

  1049. keeping

  1050. steadfast love

  1051. for thousands,

  1052. forgiving

  1053. iniquity,

  1054. and

  1055. transgression,

  1056. and sin.

  1057. But who

  1058. will by

  1059. no means

  1060. clear the

  1061. guilty,

  1062. visiting

  1063. iniquity

  1064. of the

  1065. father

  1066. on the

  1067. children

  1068. and the

  1069. children's

  1070. children

  1071. to the

  1072. third and

  1073. fourth

  1074. generations.

  1075. Jonah

  1076. left out

  1077. the second

  1078. half of

  1079. that verse.

  1080. Jonah

  1081. left out

  1082. God's

  1083. justice.

  1084. Jonah

  1085. chose to

  1086. see the

  1087. truth that

  1088. he wanted

  1089. to see.

  1090. Jonah

  1091. chose to

  1092. take parts

  1093. of the

  1094. passage that

  1095. he wanted

  1096. to use,

  1097. parts that

  1098. supported his

  1099. version of

  1100. the truth,

  1101. and give

  1102. them back

  1103. to God.

  1104. Jonah

  1105. didn't apply

  1106. the whole

  1107. truth.

  1108. He didn't

  1109. apply the

  1110. whole truth

  1111. of Scripture,

  1112. only what

  1113. was convenient

  1114. for him.

  1115. Let me

  1116. just say,

  1117. church,

  1118. that cherry

  1119. picking the

  1120. truths of

  1121. Scripture is

  1122. a dangerous

  1123. business.

  1124. Thomas

  1125. Jefferson,

  1126. one of our

  1127. founding fathers,

  1128. our third

  1129. president,

  1130. was known

  1131. for this

  1132. actually.

  1133. He had

  1134. created his

  1135. own biblical

  1136. text.

  1137. He went

  1138. through the

  1139. Bible and

  1140. meticulously

  1141. cut out

  1142. the parts

  1143. that he

  1144. thought were

  1145. good,

  1146. trustworthy,

  1147. the parts

  1148. that he

  1149. liked,

  1150. and he

  1151. pasted them

  1152. on paper

  1153. and created

  1154. a relatively

  1155. comprehensive

  1156. or at least

  1157. readable,

  1158. coherent text

  1159. of the story

  1160. of Jesus

  1161. and his

  1162. teachings,

  1163. but then

  1164. leaving out

  1165. the things

  1166. that he

  1167. disagreed

  1168. with.

  1169. Now,

  1170. how many

  1171. of you

  1172. use

  1173. highlighters?

  1174. This isn't

  1175. a gotcha.

  1176. I use

  1177. them.

  1178. I write

  1179. all over

  1180. my Bible.

  1181. I mean,

  1182. they fall

  1183. apart by

  1184. the time

  1185. I'm done.

  1186. I hate

  1187. to get

  1188. rid of

  1189. them because

  1190. there's so

  1191. many notes

  1192. in them.

  1193. Now,

  1194. imagine

  1195. you've got,

  1196. some of you

  1197. probably use

  1198. a lot of

  1199. different

  1200. color

  1201. highlighters

  1202. too,

  1203. the pretty

  1204. ones,

  1205. and your

  1206. Bible's

  1207. very colorful.

  1208. Thank you

  1209. for artsy

  1210. people.

  1211. Now,

  1212. I only

  1213. use a

  1214. yellow one,

  1215. but imagine

  1216. you've got

  1217. your highlighters

  1218. out there

  1219. and you're

  1220. using your

  1221. highlighter.

  1222. Oh,

  1223. this is so

  1224. beautiful.

  1225. I love

  1226. this.

  1227. This truth

  1228. is so

  1229. wonderful to

  1230. me.

  1231. I don't

  1232. particularly

  1233. like what

  1234. that one

  1235. says.

  1236. Where's

  1237. that black

  1238. Sharpie?

  1239. Oh,

  1240. yeah,

  1241. there it

  1242. is.

  1243. Imagine

  1244. that's how

  1245. you did

  1246. your Bible

  1247. and took

  1248. the black

  1249. Sharpie

  1250. on the

  1251. parts you

  1252. don't like,

  1253. highlighted

  1254. on the

  1255. parts you

  1256. do like.

  1257. What's

  1258. left,

  1259. right?

  1260. It's a

  1261. Bible full

  1262. of half

  1263. truths.

  1264. That's what

  1265. Jefferson did.

  1266. That's what

  1267. Jonah is

  1268. doing.

  1269. And if

  1270. we're not

  1271. careful in

  1272. truth,

  1273. it's what

  1274. many of

  1275. us do

  1276. as well.

  1277. When God

  1278. relented of

  1279. the destruction

  1280. that Nineveh

  1281. rightly

  1282. deserved,

  1283. God's

  1284. compassion

  1285. and mercy

  1286. were seen

  1287. as evil

  1288. by Jonah.

  1289. Jonah could

  1290. not see

  1291. any good

  1292. coming out

  1293. of what

  1294. God was

  1295. doing,

  1296. so he

  1297. questioned

  1298. God's

  1299. goodness.

  1300. He

  1301. questioned

  1302. God's

  1303. goodness

  1304. to the

  1305. point of

  1306. seeing it

  1307. as evil.

  1308. Unless we

  1309. judge Jonah

  1310. too quickly,

  1311. I'm not

  1312. so different.

  1313. And if you

  1314. find yourself

  1315. ever in that

  1316. place of

  1317. doubting God's

  1318. goodness,

  1319. you're not

  1320. alone.

  1321. I say you're

  1322. not alone

  1323. because at

  1324. the core

  1325. of the book

  1326. of Jonah

  1327. is the

  1328. oldest

  1329. question

  1330. posed

  1331. by man

  1332. about

  1333. God.

  1334. Is God

  1335. good?

  1336. Can I

  1337. trust him?

  1338. Can I

  1339. trust God's

  1340. goodness?

  1341. It's at the

  1342. heart of the

  1343. story,

  1344. really,

  1345. of the fall

  1346. of Adam

  1347. and Eve.

  1348. God

  1349. commanded

  1350. Adam and

  1351. Eve not

  1352. to eat

  1353. of the

  1354. tree of

  1355. the knowledge

  1356. of good

  1357. and evil.

  1358. It was

  1359. the only,

  1360. the only

  1361. rule in

  1362. the garden.

  1363. Now look,

  1364. there was

  1365. more food

  1366. in the

  1367. garden than

  1368. you can

  1369. imagine.

  1370. There was

  1371. no issue

  1372. of food

  1373. insecurity

  1374. here.

  1375. It was

  1376. not a

  1377. question of

  1378. hunger or

  1379. any real

  1380. need that

  1381. they had.

  1382. No,

  1383. it was a

  1384. question of

  1385. God's

  1386. goodness.

  1387. When

  1388. Satan tempted

  1389. Adam and

  1390. Eve,

  1391. the question

  1392. quietly being

  1393. posed in

  1394. the background

  1395. was why

  1396. would God

  1397. withhold from

  1398. them what

  1399. was obviously

  1400. good?

  1401. A fruit

  1402. that looked

  1403. good to

  1404. eat.

  1405. A fruit

  1406. that would

  1407. make them

  1408. like God.

  1409. They

  1410. couldn't find

  1411. a reason.

  1412. They

  1413. couldn't find

  1414. a reason

  1415. that the

  1416. fruit would

  1417. not be good

  1418. to eat.

  1419. See,

  1420. the picture

  1421. that Satan

  1422. painted for

  1423. them was

  1424. that God

  1425. was petty,

  1426. selfish,

  1427. and capricious.

  1428. The

  1429. implications of

  1430. that line of

  1431. thought,

  1432. if we were to

  1433. carry it

  1434. through,

  1435. was that God

  1436. is not good

  1437. and if he is

  1438. not good,

  1439. then he is

  1440. potentially evil.

  1441. In the

  1442. end,

  1443. they chose

  1444. to believe

  1445. that God

  1446. was not

  1447. good.

  1448. They chose

  1449. to believe

  1450. that their

  1451. own understanding

  1452. of what

  1453. was good

  1454. was more

  1455. right than

  1456. God's.

  1457. They put

  1458. themselves in

  1459. God's place

  1460. and decided

  1461. that they

  1462. were the

  1463. ones who

  1464. were best

  1465. able to

  1466. determine

  1467. what was

  1468. good.

  1469. Like Adam

  1470. and Eve,

  1471. we're all

  1472. tempted by

  1473. this question,

  1474. is God

  1475. good when

  1476. I cannot

  1477. see any

  1478. good coming

  1479. from it?

  1480. Is God

  1481. good when

  1482. my business

  1483. fails?

  1484. Is God

  1485. good when

  1486. my child

  1487. starts running

  1488. with the

  1489. wrong crowd?

  1490. Is God

  1491. good when

  1492. I'm unable

  1493. to have

  1494. children,

  1495. when I

  1496. can't find

  1497. a spouse?

  1498. Is God

  1499. good when

  1500. I get a

  1501. diagnosis of

  1502. cancer or

  1503. Alzheimer's?

  1504. The question

  1505. that Jonah

  1506. was forced

  1507. to deal

  1508. with was,

  1509. is God

  1510. good when

  1511. he shows

  1512. mercy to

  1513. my enemies,

  1514. the enemies

  1515. of me and

  1516. my country?

  1517. Now,

  1518. our personal

  1519. questions may

  1520. be different,

  1521. but you and

  1522. I each

  1523. have them.

  1524. Is God

  1525. good when

  1526. dot,

  1527. dot,

  1528. dot,

  1529. and you

  1530. fill in the

  1531. blank?

  1532. Well,

  1533. I want to

  1534. take a few

  1535. moments here

  1536. to help us

  1537. consider that

  1538. question out

  1539. of what we

  1540. saw in

  1541. Exodus 34,

    Exodus 34:6

  1542. verses 6

  1543. and 7.

  1544. In that

  1545. passage,

  1546. God describes

  1547. his goodness

  1548. in terms of

  1549. mercy,

  1550. grace,

  1551. slowness to

  1552. anger,

  1553. forgiveness,

  1554. an abundance

  1555. of steadfast love

  1556. and faithfulness.

  1557. grace,

  1558. but also

  1559. in his

  1560. justice

  1561. and a

  1562. remembrance

  1563. of justice

  1564. across

  1565. generations.

  1566. For me,

  1567. I believe

  1568. that the

  1569. scriptures teach

  1570. that God

  1571. is good.

  1572. It's my

  1573. bedrock

  1574. and the

  1575. foundation

  1576. of my

  1577. faith.

  1578. But the

  1579. scriptures

  1580. teach me

  1581. other things

  1582. about God's

  1583. goodness

  1584. that help

  1585. me understand

  1586. it more.

  1587. They remind

  1588. me that God

  1589. is the

  1590. creator

  1591. of time

  1592. as we

  1593. understand

  1594. it.

  1595. And that

  1596. moreover,

  1597. he is

  1598. outside of

  1599. that time.

  1600. God is

  1601. eternal

  1602. and he

  1603. knows the

  1604. end from

  1605. the beginning.

  1606. You and

  1607. I,

  1608. though,

  1609. are not

  1610. eternal.

  1611. We have

  1612. an expiration

  1613. date.

  1614. I don't

  1615. know what's

  1616. going to

  1617. happen in

  1618. the next

  1619. second.

  1620. You and

  1621. I are

  1622. like less

  1623. than a

  1624. millisecond

  1625. of time

  1626. in a

  1627. millennia.

  1628. Yet our

  1629. God knows

  1630. us by

  1631. name,

  1632. created us

  1633. in our

  1634. mother's

  1635. womb for

  1636. his purposes

  1637. which he

  1638. will fulfill.

  1639. God knew

  1640. you from

  1641. before time

  1642. and he

  1643. set his

  1644. love upon

  1645. you.

  1646. While you

  1647. were still

  1648. his enemy,

  1649. he sent

  1650. his son

  1651. to die

  1652. for you.

  1653. He

  1654. pursued

  1655. you

  1656. across

  1657. time

  1658. with

  1659. his

  1660. goodness.

  1661. He

  1662. changed

  1663. your

  1664. heart.

  1665. He

  1666. opened

  1667. your

  1668. eyes.

  1669. He

  1670. softened

  1671. you.

  1672. He

  1673. gave

  1674. you

  1675. faith

  1676. to

  1677. believe.

  1678. He

  1679. set

  1680. you

  1681. free

  1682. from

  1683. darkness.

  1684. He

  1685. forgave

  1686. all

  1687. of

  1688. your

  1689. sins

  1690. like

  1691. we

  1692. read

  1693. earlier

  1694. as

  1695. far

  1696. as

  1697. the

  1698. east

  1699. is

  1700. from

  1701. the

  1702. west.

  1703. He

  1704. gave

  1705. you

  1706. the

  1707. faith

  1708. to

  1709. believe.

  1710. He

  1711. filled

  1712. you

  1713. with

  1714. his

  1715. Holy

  1716. Spirit,

  1717. called

  1718. you

  1719. his

  1720. beloved,

  1721. made

  1722. you

  1723. his

  1724. child,

  1725. gave

  1726. you

  1727. the

  1728. hope

  1729. of

  1730. the

  1731. resurrection,

  1732. promised

  1733. you

  1734. an

  1735. eternal

  1736. inheritance

  1737. all

  1738. through

  1739. his

  1740. son.

  1741. Why?

  1742. Because

  1743. he

  1744. is

  1745. good.

  1746. You

  1747. are

  1748. not

  1749. the

  1750. recipients

  1751. of

  1752. those

  1753. things

  1754. because

  1755. you

  1756. are

  1757. good.

  1758. You

  1759. are

  1760. not

  1761. the

  1762. recipient

  1763. of

  1764. those

  1765. things

  1766. because

  1767. you

  1768. were

  1769. born

  1770. in

  1771. a

  1772. Christian

  1773. family.

  1774. You

  1775. are

  1776. not

  1777. the

  1778. recipients

  1779. of

  1780. those

  1781. things

  1782. because

  1783. of

  1784. your

  1785. own

  1786. righteousness

  1787. and

  1788. the

  1789. good

  1790. things

  1791. that

  1792. you've

  1793. done.

  1794. You

  1795. are

  1796. the

  1797. recipient

  1798. of

  1799. those

  1800. things

  1801. because

  1802. God

  1803. is

  1804. good.

  1805. He

  1806. is

  1807. merciful

  1808. and

  1809. gracious,

  1810. compassionate,

  1811. abounding in

  1812. steadfast love,

  1813. forgiving sin,

  1814. but also

  1815. maintaining

  1816. justice.

  1817. Jonah

  1818. wasn't

  1819. interested

  1820. in

  1821. compassion.

  1822. He

  1823. wanted

  1824. justice.

  1825. He

  1826. wanted

  1827. to see

  1828. his

  1829. enemies

  1830. destroyed

  1831. for their

  1832. evil,

  1833. and he

  1834. wanted to

  1835. see it

  1836. now

  1837. on

  1838. his

  1839. time.

  1840. Yet

  1841. God

  1842. is

  1843. able

  1844. to

  1845. do

  1846. both.

  1847. He

  1848. is

  1849. able

  1850. to

  1851. be

  1852. both

  1853. compassionate

  1854. and

  1855. just.

  1856. So

  1857. let

  1858. me

  1859. give

  1860. you

  1861. just

  1862. a

  1863. quick

  1864. example

  1865. from

  1866. history

  1867. that

  1868. relates

  1869. to

  1870. this.

  1871. The

  1872. events

  1873. of the

  1874. book

  1875. of

  1876. Jonah

  1877. take

  1878. place

  1879. somewhere

  1880. between

  1881. 782

  1882. and

  1883. 753

  1884. BC

  1885. under

  1886. the

  1887. reign

  1888. of

  1889. Jeroboam

  1890. II.

  1891. Somewhere

  1892. in that

  1893. period,

  1894. Jonah

  1895. preaches

  1896. to the

  1897. Ninevites.

  1898. They

  1899. repent,

  1900. turn to

  1901. God,

  1902. God has

  1903. mercy on

  1904. them,

  1905. and instead

  1906. of destruction

  1907. that Jonah

  1908. wanted,

  1909. they receive

  1910. mercy.

  1911. And much

  1912. as Jonah

  1913. feared,

  1914. they grew

  1915. strong,

  1916. and in

  1917. 722 BC,

  1918. they attack

  1919. and defeat

  1920. the kingdom

  1921. of Israel,

  1922. send them

  1923. all into

  1924. exile.

  1925. Israel.

  1926. Yet 110

  1927. years

  1928. later,

  1929. the

  1930. Babylonians

  1931. overrun

  1932. the

  1933. Assyrians

  1934. and destroy

  1935. Nineveh

  1936. in 612

  1937. BC.

  1938. The

  1939. prophets

  1940. will

  1941. actually

  1942. interpret

  1943. both

  1944. of these,

  1945. the fall

  1946. of Israel

  1947. and the

  1948. fall

  1949. of Assyrians

  1950. as God's

  1951. judgment

  1952. for the

  1953. evil that

  1954. they had

  1955. done.

  1956. So what

  1957. do I

  1958. learn from

  1959. that?

  1960. Why am I

  1961. telling you

  1962. this?

  1963. First,

  1964. I learned

  1965. that God

  1966. is good.

  1967. He showed

  1968. mercy and

  1969. grace to

  1970. the people

  1971. of Nineveh.

  1972. He had

  1973. compassion and

  1974. forgiveness of

  1975. their sin.

  1976. That is

  1977. evident.

  1978. He relents.

  1979. Second,

  1980. God is

  1981. good.

  1982. Justice

  1983. was given

  1984. as he

  1985. promised.

  1986. God

  1987. promised

  1988. through the

  1989. prophets

  1990. that if

  1991. they did

  1992. not turn,

  1993. both Israel

  1994. and Nineveh

  1995. would be

  1996. judged and

  1997. destroyed.

  1998. And in a

  1999. few generations,

  2000. Nineveh had

  2001. gone back to

  2002. being who

  2003. they were

  2004. as Assyrians.

  2005. God's

  2006. judgment

  2007. came to

  2008. Israel

  2009. through Assyria

  2010. and to

  2011. Assyria

  2012. through the

  2013. Babylonians.

  2014. Third,

  2015. I am

  2016. reminded

  2017. that while

  2018. God

  2019. is good

  2020. to us

  2021. as

  2022. individuals,

  2023. we often

  2024. have to

  2025. step

  2026. back

  2027. to see

  2028. that

  2029. goodness

  2030. over

  2031. time,

  2032. over

  2033. generations.

  2034. In 1981,

  2035. my father

  2036. was diagnosed

  2037. with pulmonary

  2038. fibrosis.

  2039. If you're not

  2040. familiar with

  2041. that,

  2042. it's a rather

  2043. cruel disease.

  2044. It slowly

  2045. kills you,

  2046. it wastes

  2047. your body,

  2048. and eventually

  2049. steals your

  2050. ability to

  2051. breathe.

  2052. you die

  2053. of congestive

  2054. heart failure

  2055. typically.

  2056. Now,

  2057. my father

  2058. had been

  2059. a strong

  2060. man.

  2061. He grew

  2062. up during

  2063. the Depression,

  2064. served in

  2065. World War II

  2066. as a

  2067. paratrooper,

  2068. served in

  2069. Korea.

  2070. He was a

  2071. hard man

  2072. at times,

  2073. but an

  2074. incredible

  2075. judge of

  2076. men and

  2077. their

  2078. character.

  2079. As a

  2080. child,

  2081. I was

  2082. pretty sure

  2083. he was

  2084. invincible.

  2085. So,

  2086. at his

  2087. death in

  2088. 1996,

  2089. I was

  2090. feeling

  2091. empty

  2092. and angry.

  2093. I could

  2094. see no

  2095. good in

  2096. what had

  2097. happened.

  2098. Yet,

  2099. I can

  2100. look back

  2101. to that

  2102. time now

  2103. and see

  2104. that God

  2105. was very

  2106. good to

  2107. my family.

  2108. God

  2109. used to

  2110. draw my

  2111. heart to

  2112. God.

  2113. God

  2114. used that

  2115. disease to

  2116. draw my

  2117. dad's

  2118. heart to

  2119. him.

  2120. My

  2121. father became

  2122. a believer

  2123. in 1993,

  2124. about three

  2125. years before

  2126. he died.

  2127. Moreover,

  2128. through the

  2129. events surrounding

  2130. my father's

  2131. death,

  2132. God led

  2133. me to

  2134. the place

  2135. where I

  2136. became a

  2137. believer about

  2138. four months

  2139. after his

  2140. death.

  2141. What I

  2142. could not

  2143. see then,

  2144. I can

  2145. see now.

  2146. God

  2147. worked to

  2148. shape faith

  2149. in my

  2150. family across

  2151. four generations

  2152. so that

  2153. now,

  2154. even his

  2155. great-grandchildren,

  2156. children.

  2157. Some of

  2158. those are

  2159. believers.

  2160. I know

  2161. with certainty

  2162. that for

  2163. all eternity

  2164. my dad

  2165. is with

  2166. his good

  2167. and gracious

  2168. father.

  2169. Friends,

  2170. that is a

  2171. gift,

  2172. and for

  2173. those of

  2174. you who

  2175. don't have

  2176. that shirt,

  2177. you know

  2178. exactly what

  2179. I mean.

  2180. That is a

  2181. gift.

  2182. I can

  2183. look back

  2184. now and

  2185. say,

  2186. God,

  2187. you are

  2188. so good

  2189. to us.

  2190. In

  2191. verse

  2192. four of

  2193. Jonah

  2194. four,

  2195. God

  2196. asks

  2197. Jonah,

  2198. do you

  2199. do well

  2200. to be

  2201. angry?

  2202. In

  2203. doing so,

  2204. he's

  2205. pointing out

  2206. Jonah's

  2207. failure to

  2208. embrace

  2209. God's

  2210. heart and

  2211. compassion

  2212. for lost

  2213. people of

  2214. the world,

  2215. even his

  2216. enemies.

  2217. He was

  2218. pointing out

  2219. Jonah's

  2220. idolatry,

  2221. which placed

  2222. his love

  2223. for his

  2224. nation

  2225. above his

  2226. love for

  2227. God.

  2228. And finally,

  2229. he was

  2230. pointing out

  2231. Jonah's

  2232. deep-rooted

  2233. conviction

  2234. that God

  2235. was not

  2236. good.

  2237. As you

  2238. would see,

  2239. if you

  2240. continue to

  2241. read the

  2242. story,

  2243. and I

  2244. hope you

  2245. do,

  2246. the rest

  2247. of chapter

  2248. four,

  2249. the story

  2250. ends,

  2251. really

  2252. with that

  2253. question,

  2254. it's

  2255. never

  2256. resolved.

  2257. Do you

  2258. do well

  2259. to be

  2260. angry?

  2261. That's

  2262. in the

  2263. face,

  2264. then,

  2265. at the

  2266. end of

  2267. the story

  2268. with

  2269. God's

  2270. compassion.

  2271. Jonah's

  2272. anger

  2273. and God's

  2274. compassion,

  2275. and it's

  2276. left

  2277. unresolved.

  2278. But,

  2279. friends,

  2280. our story

  2281. doesn't

  2282. need to

  2283. end there.

  2284. We

  2285. don't

  2286. need

  2287. our

  2288. story to

  2289. end

  2290. unresolved.

  2291. see,

  2292. this last

  2293. question

  2294. really is

  2295. ours as

  2296. well.

  2297. Do you

  2298. do well

  2299. to be

  2300. angry?

  2301. Do you

  2302. do well

  2303. to distrust

  2304. the goodness

  2305. of God?

  2306. Do you

  2307. do well

  2308. to distrust

  2309. his mercy

  2310. and his

  2311. compassion,

  2312. his steadfast

  2313. love,

  2314. and his

  2315. forgiveness?

  2316. Do you

  2317. do well

  2318. to distrust

  2319. his justice?

  2320. Do you

  2321. do well

  2322. to mistrust

  2323. the timing

  2324. of his

  2325. events?

  2326. do you

  2327. do well

  2328. to be

  2329. angry

  2330. when God's

  2331. purposes

  2332. and yours

  2333. diverge?

  2334. And in

  2335. doing so,

  2336. the idols

  2337. of your

  2338. heart

  2339. are revealed.

  2340. Do you

  2341. do well

  2342. to be

  2343. angry?

  2344. See,

  2345. Jonah's

  2346. response

  2347. was,

  2348. yes,

  2349. I do

  2350. well

  2351. to be

  2352. angry,

  2353. angry

  2354. enough

  2355. to die.

  2356. But,

  2357. friends,

  2358. that answer

  2359. is there

  2360. as a

  2361. signpost

  2362. to us.

  2363. It's a

  2364. signpost

  2365. that says,

  2366. do not

  2367. enter

  2368. wrong

  2369. way.

  2370. That

  2371. anger

  2372. of Jonah's

  2373. was

  2374. symptomatic

  2375. of a

  2376. heart

  2377. misaligned

  2378. with

  2379. God's.

  2380. And when

  2381. God points

  2382. it out,

  2383. as he

  2384. did with

  2385. Jonah,

  2386. it's our

  2387. opportunity

  2388. to repent

  2389. to run

  2390. to God,

  2391. freely

  2392. admitting

  2393. our

  2394. anger

  2395. and

  2396. throwing

  2397. down,

  2398. throwing it

  2399. down before

  2400. the cross,

  2401. the things

  2402. that Christ

  2403. already paid

  2404. for,

  2405. he already

  2406. knows about

  2407. it.

  2408. You can

  2409. run to

  2410. the cross,

  2411. you can

  2412. run to

  2413. Jesus,

  2414. you can

  2415. throw down

  2416. that anger

  2417. and throw

  2418. yourself

  2419. onto God's

  2420. mercy.

  2421. Friends,

  2422. if the

  2423. question,

  2424. do you

  2425. do well

  2426. to be

  2427. angry,

  2428. strikes

  2429. home for

  2430. you today,

  2431. as it has,

  2432. as I have

  2433. prepared this

  2434. and actually

  2435. preached it

  2436. twice now,

  2437. both times,

  2438. it does this

  2439. for me.

  2440. if it strikes

  2441. home today,

  2442. then that is

  2443. the Holy Spirit

  2444. at work

  2445. within you.

  2446. It is God's

  2447. kindness which

  2448. leads you to

  2449. repentance,

  2450. to mercy,

  2451. to forgiveness,

  2452. to restoration.

  2453. salvation.

  2454. So as we

  2455. close out

  2456. the service

  2457. today,

  2458. or I close

  2459. out this

  2460. message,

  2461. please don't

  2462. leave here

  2463. today without

  2464. taking time

  2465. to repent

  2466. of that

  2467. anger and

  2468. turning to

  2469. God.

  2470. Take time

  2471. while you

  2472. are here

  2473. to find

  2474. someone to

  2475. pray with

  2476. you.

  2477. Look,

  2478. I'm not

  2479. saying

  2480. it will be

  2481. all better

  2482. immediately,

  2483. but today

  2484. you can start

  2485. letting go.

  2486. and start

  2487. embracing the

  2488. goodness of

  2489. God in

  2490. faith.

  2491. Amen?

  2492. Amen.

  2493. Father,

  2494. thank you,

  2495. Lord God,

  2496. for your

  2497. word today.

  2498. We thank you

  2499. for the

  2500. truths of

  2501. scripture.

  2502. Lord,

  2503. for those,

  2504. any of us

  2505. who are out

  2506. here today

  2507. in that

  2508. place of

  2509. anger,

  2510. or through

  2511. the kindness

  2512. of your

  2513. spirit,

  2514. would you

  2515. begin to

  2516. turn our

  2517. hearts

  2518. towards you.

  2519. Father,

  2520. as we go

  2521. forth in

  2522. this week,

  2523. Lord,

  2524. I pray,

  2525. I ask

  2526. that these

  2527. words would

  2528. come back

  2529. to us.

  2530. Father,

  2531. that you

  2532. would make

  2533. us a

  2534. people who

  2535. trust in

  2536. your goodness

  2537. even when

  2538. we can't

  2539. see it.

  2540. Give us

  2541. the hope,

  2542. the desire,

  2543. the strength,

  2544. the courage

  2545. to turn

  2546. towards you,

  2547. to trust you

  2548. when our

  2549. paths diverge.

  2550. And Lord,

  2551. when we

  2552. fail to

  2553. do that,

  2554. in your

  2555. compassion and

  2556. mercy,

  2557. point it out

  2558. to us and

  2559. draw us

  2560. back to

  2561. yourself.

  2562. We pray

  2563. it in

  2564. Jesus'

  2565. name.

  2566. Amen.

  2567. Amen.
