  1. Chapter 4. And this is the love of the

  2. Holy Spirit.

  3. And God's love is a great love, isn't

  4. it?

  5. It's uh without that we we have nothing.

  6. With that, God has given us everything

  7. in his son. God's love is is

  8. unconditional love. It's not human love.

  9. He God doesn't love like we love.

  10. His love is much greater and far greater

  11. and it extends to all members of the

  12. Trinity.

  13. And this morning we are going to look at

  14. the love of the spirit of God.

  15. We're going to start in first John

  16. in chapter 4

  17. verse 8 and and we're going to see from

  18. uh some verses that it God's love is

  19. sacrificial and John talks about that

  20. here

  21. a little bit in these verses that the

  22. other verses that we're going to look

  23. look at. God is long-suffering. God is

  24. faithful. He's unwavering. unwavering.

  25. His love is without hypocrisy.

  26. There's no respector of men with God.

  27. Nobody gets,

  28. as we call him at work, nobody gets any

  29. brownie points with God.

  30. He sees everything for what it is. And

  31. God is love. And the Holy Spirit himself

  32. has given to us to help us with that

  33. love. And that's what John says here.

  34. You know, that's

  35. that's how we fix uh that's how things

  36. get fixed in ourselves and in the church

  37. is through the love of God and the

  38. spirit of God. And here in 1 John 4:8,

    1 John 4:8

  39. he that loves not knows not God, for God

  40. is love. Pretty blunt verse, but right

  41. to the point this morning as we begin.

  42. So, you know, the Holy Spirit himself is

  43. given to us by God. Uh he is God to help

  44. us with this love.

  45. If you will look down at verse 13 and

  46. you're all familiar with this whole

  47. chapter, this whole area given over to

  48. this in this in the word of God here.

  49. But he says here in verse 13, by this

  50. know we that we dwell in him and he in

  51. us because he has given unto us his

  52. spirit. So the Holy Spirit has been

  53. given to us that that we might know the

  54. love of God and that we might be able to

  55. love um like God. That's what he wants.

  56. He wants us to love like he does and to

  57. walk in the spirit and not fulfill the

  58. lust of the flesh as Paul says over in

  59. Galatians. But look if down if you would

  60. in verse 15, he says, "Whosoever shall

  61. confess that Jesus

  62. is the son of God, God dwells in him and

  63. him and God." So there it is. That's the

  64. love of God.

  65. We're in God's love and God's spirit is

  66. in us and we are received and we stand

  67. before God in the merit of his son and

  68. in the love of God. And if you will look

  69. over in chapter 3 and verse 19,

  70. he said, "By this we know that we are of

  71. the truth that we are sure our hearts

  72. before him. For if our hearts condemn

  73. us, God is greater than our hearts and

  74. he knows all things. So God, the spirit

  75. that's in us is greater than our hearts.

  76. So he can help us with this. He can help

  77. us love when we when we need to love and

  78. and help us to uh to love God back, you

  79. know, and to be able to do these kinds

  80. of things. So, you know, God, the Holy

  81. Spirit in us and the love of God in us

  82. is greater than our hearts. It's greater

  83. than our conscience. Paul says, or

  84. excuse me, John says as we begin here.

  85. And then, if you will, back over in

  86. verse six of chapter 4,

  87. he says, "We are of God."

  88. So, we're of God because of the love of

  89. God, the spirit of God, the things that

  90. God has given to us. We are now of God.

  91. and that he that knoweth God hears us,

  92. and he that does not know God hears not

  93. us.

  94. But this we know, the spirit of truth

  95. and the spirit of error. So the love of

  96. God has become ours through what God has

  97. done and through the gift

  98. of the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit

  99. and the love of God are greater than our

  100. conscience. are greater than our you

  101. know than than anything in us to help us

  102. uh live in this life. So you know we we

  103. need to love God back then because of

  104. this. That was Peter's test. Remember

  105. you know when he failed and went through

  106. all his trials and tribulations and so

  107. the love of God restores us. The love of

  108. God is is longsuffering and sacrificial

  109. and unconditional and all those

  110. wonderful things. So turn over to Romans

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  111. chapter 5.

  112. Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  113. You know, that's one of the Holy

  114. Spirit's duties is to take this great

  115. love of God

  116. and and you know, who's he's greater

  117. than our mind. He's greater than our

  118. heart. He's greater than our conscience.

  119. and to help us understand this great

  120. love of God that we have been given.

  121. And in Romans chapter 5 in verse 5, he

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  122. says, "And hope makes not ashamed

  123. because the love of God is shed abroad

  124. in our hearts by the Holy Spirit

  125. who was given unto us." We didn't earn

  126. this. We didn't earn the Holy Spirit. We

  127. didn't ask for this. We have been given

  128. this by God. So the Holy Spirit is on a

  129. mission

  130. in every Christian to help us understand

  131. and know uh what the love of God is and

  132. what has been done done for us. So you

  133. know if if this is not a part of who we

  134. are then you know God God must be

  135. shaking his head if we don't know he

  136. loves us. If we don't know about the

  137. spirit of God, if we don't know about

  138. the love of God and how much God loves

  139. us, you know, the spirit is on that

  140. mission to make those things known to

  141. us.

  142. And you know, we're totally dependent on

  143. God here. You know, that's, you know,

  144. his love is unmmerited love. It's an

  145. unconditional love. It's a sacrificial

  146. love. We're so we're totally dependent

  147. on God here. This is not any merit at

  148. all in us. We can't do anything to merit

  149. this. So the spirit comes and when the

  150. spirit comes, that's what he does. When

  151. when we were unbelievers, when we were

  152. unsaved,

  153. you know, that was what we didn't know.

  154. I didn't know about the love of God. I

  155. didn't know about, you know, what God

  156. had done for me. And it was a revelation

  157. from God's word. I was like, "Wow, God,

  158. here's the love. God loves me. I'm a

  159. sinner. He, you know, God surely doesn't

  160. love me. Yes, he does,

  161. you know, and and he loved us so much as

  162. to send his son so to die for us. And

  163. then, you know, that's what happens when

  164. the spirit comes to us. He convicts us

  165. of sin. We've seen those verses in in

  166. John where, you know, John said that

  167. about when when the spirit comes, he's

  168. going to convict us of sin.

  169. So you know we have this great spirit in

  170. us. We have the great love of God in us

  171. and it's shed abroad in our hearts

  172. um to know that we have been loved by

  173. God and unconditionally and and without

  174. merit

  175. and uh he will help us then

  176. with the gifts of the church church the

  177. teachers and the preachers of the church

  178. should you know that's what we do. We we

  179. preach the love of God. We preach this.

  180. We preach regeneration by faith. We we

  181. tell people about God loving and dying

  182. for sinners. I mean, that's the that's

  183. the hallmark of the word of God. So, we

  184. we better get that. We better understand

  185. that. We better know that for our own

  186. selves and for other.

  187. So, without the spirit of God, there is

  188. no conviction. You know, I was quite

  189. happy living my life, you know, and men

  190. are, you know, and you try to get them

  191. exposed to the word of God and and they

  192. resist, don't they? And and I did as

  193. well. But it takes the spirit of God to

  194. come and to to convict us and show us

  195. what the love of God is. And without the

  196. spirit, we have no conversion.

  197. You know, I would have never been

  198. converted had it not been for the spirit

  199. of God. you would have never been

  200. converted

  201. without the spirit of God, you know. So,

  202. he comes and he does these things and

  203. convicts us. And you know, that's that's

  204. John 3:16.

    John 3:16

  205. We know that well enough. We don't have

  206. to turn there.

  207. But, you know, it's like the love of the

  208. father and the love of the son. For God

  209. so loved the world

  210. that he gave his only begotten son. So

  211. there we see the love of God on display

  212. and we typically

  213. you know relate that to the father and

  214. to the son. We see Jesus love on the

  215. cross when we read the gospels and we

  216. see what he did for us and how he loved

  217. us. So we see his love that's uh

  218. displayed

  219. for us. That's the love of God. And and

  220. that's what Paul does down through

  221. Romans chapter 5 here. You know, as he

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  222. he says in verse 8, God commanded his

  223. love toward us that while we were yet

  224. sinners, Christ died for us. So God

  225. didn't wait on us to get better. We

  226. couldn't.

  227. He didn't even wait on us to to under to

  228. acknowledge our need. He just uh sent

  229. his son to die for us and and to wake us

  230. up to the fact that we're sinners and

  231. that Christ died for us. You know,

  232. that's what we need woken up to.

  233. So God has a great compassion to see

  234. souls saved. You know, that's why he

  235. sent his son. You know, that's why he's

  236. given us the Holy Spirit. That's why we

  237. have like Romans chapter 5 here says so

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  238. we'll know that while we were yet

  239. sinners Christ died for us and God

  240. commended his love toward us. That's

  241. what this this verse says.

  242. Now you remember

  243. let's turn there to 1 Timothy chapter 4.

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  244. 1 Timothy chapter 4.

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  245. you know, as wicked as this world is,

  246. you know, why doesn't God just, you

  247. know, strike everybody dead for our sin

  248. and we'll just, you know, go on with

  249. life? That's the love of God. A part of

  250. the love of God is his longsuffering

  251. and his patience. He knows we're in

  252. need. He knows that we can't do anything

  253. to save ourselves, but we need his son,

  254. you know. So, God's longsuffering. 1

    1 Timothy 4:10

  255. Timothy 4:10.

  256. We saw this verse when we went through

  257. Timothy, but it helped set the table

  258. for, you know, just how broad we should

  259. think of God's love, you know, for for

  260. everyone. He's He understands we're

  261. sinners. He understands we're lost. He

  262. understands we need uh the word of God.

  263. And and we need the Holy Spirit to come

  264. and bring conviction.

  265. And here Timothy

  266. 1 Timothy 4:10 he says for therefore we

    1 Timothy 4:10

  267. both labor and suffer reproach.

  268. So those are the two things that

  269. Christians do. We labor and we suffer

  270. reproach

  271. because we are trust in the living God

  272. who is the savior of all men especially

  273. of those that believe. You know he's not

  274. saying that everybody's saved. He's just

  275. saying that, you know, Jesus, the work

  276. that Jesus did on the cross allows God

  277. to be longsuffering and allow people uh

  278. to come to him. Turn to Luke 12.

  279. Luke 12.

  280. And so God is longsuffering toward us

  281. and towards sinners that we might come

  282. to know him. And

  283. and here in Luke 12

  284. in verse 32, he says, "Fear not, little

  285. flock,

  286. for it is your father's good pleasure to

  287. give you the kingdom." So,

  288. you know, God is not some giant ogre

  289. sitting in in heaven waiting on us to

  290. step out of line so he can zap us. I

  291. mean, that was my theology before I got

  292. saved. I thought everything's going bad.

  293. God just must hate me. You know, I you

  294. know, I couldn't blame him. You know,

  295. it's my own fault, right?

  296. But Jesus comes along and and he tells

  297. us the truth that the love of God, the

  298. grace of God is longsuffering and it's

  299. God's pleasure.

  300. Fear not, little flock. You know, it's

  301. uh it's for all of us. That's who we

  302. are. We're we're God's flock. We're

  303. God's children. And the Bible says it's

  304. God's good pleasure to give us his

  305. kingdom. You know, he we don't have to

  306. twist his arm at all. So, he's willing

  307. to do this. And you know, we need to be

  308. willing to receive it. That's what men

  309. are having a hard time with. But that's

  310. what the gospel does. It it sheds light

  311. on our need. It sheds light on our

  312. darkness. It sheds light on our on our

  313. sin, you know. So, God is, you know,

  314. more eager to give than we are to

  315. receive.

  316. And, uh, turn over to Matthew 25.

  317. And sort of this is at the end.

  318. Matthew 25

  319. and verse 34.

  320. There's not one person saved that didn't

  321. come through the love of God and the

  322. grace of God and the conviction of the

  323. Holy Spirit. Not one.

  324. And here in Matthew 25, where Jesus

  325. divides the flock,

  326. and look in verse 34,

  327. then shall the king say unto them on his

  328. right hand, come.

  329. What are we? Did we We merit it. We

  330. earned it. We're good. We're the good

  331. boys and they're the bad boys. No, not

  332. by any means.

  333. Come you blessed of my father, inherit

  334. the kingdom prepared for you from the

  335. foundation of the world. So it's God's

  336. good pleasure to give us his kingdom. So

  337. you know we can just, you know, get over

  338. our anxiety of whatever, you know,

  339. whatever reservations we have about

  340. this. It's God's good pleasure to love

  341. us and and to give us his kingdom. And

  342. you know, Jesus said uh about his father

  343. and how great his father was and and uh

  344. he's willing and waiting to receive

  345. people that will come

  346. to um Christ through him. God takes

  347. great pleasure in giving. And that's

  348. what these verses indicate. That's what

  349. these verses help us with, you know, and

  350. and God doesn't have an ulterior motive.

  351. You know that some people say, "What?

  352. You know, God's kind of selferving,

  353. isn't he?" No, God's not self- serving

  354. at all. He's demonstrated his love. He's

  355. rescuing us uh who have been influenced

  356. by sin. And uh you know, God's ways, as

  357. pastor

  358. had the verse last night at the retreat,

  359. God's ways are way above our ways. So,

  360. we just need to listen to him. and he's

  361. made us hes through his son Jesus

  362. Christ. Turn to Galatians chapter 4.

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  363. There's a couple examples

  364. in the word of God

  365. where

  366. you know the the the love what God has

  367. told us to do will resolve the issues

  368. and the conflicts that we have. You know

  369. this is God's way of doing it. He's you

  370. know God knows I need cleaned up. So he

  371. gave me his spirit

  372. you know and he gave me his word. And

  373. those are the two things that

  374. um that God has provided.

  375. So those are the things that we need to

  376. yield to and the things that we that we

  377. need to listen to. And here in in

  378. chapter 4 of Galatians, this is the

  379. section here about us being sons and not

  380. being servants. You know, so you know,

  381. God didn't make us a slave. He made us

  382. his a son.

  383. That's what this section says. uh verses

  384. 1-7 here. Now I say that the heir as

  385. long as he a child differs nothing from

  386. a servant though he be lord of all. He's

  387. under the tutors and the governors until

  388. the time appointed of the father.

  389. Even so when we were children we were in

  390. bondage unto the elements of the world.

  391. But when the fullness of time was come,

  392. God sent forth his son made of a woman,

  393. made under the law, to redeem them that

  394. were under the law, that we we might

  395. receive the adoption of sons. So, we've

  396. been adopted. And in this adoption, then

  397. God can give us his spirit. That's what

  398. it says in verse six. Because you're

  399. sons, God has sent forth the spirit of

  400. his son into your hearts crying, "Aba,

  401. Father." So now God's my father. You

  402. know the Jews that that was that was a

  403. sinful thought to think God was your

  404. father. You know to to think God in that

  405. way. Well here comes Jesus along and he

  406. says that you know not only is can we

  407. call God our father. He is our father

  408. and he cares for us like a parent and

  409. you're no longer a servant but a son and

  410. a son and an heir through Christ. Wow.

  411. What a deal from the love of God, the

  412. grace of God, and the mercy of God. We

  413. need these things. And then, you know,

  414. he he says over there, and we need to

  415. birth for this to happen. You know,

  416. that's the part that people struggle

  417. with and don't want to humble themselves

  418. and come to God on his terms. But when

  419. we humble ourselves and come to God on

  420. his terms and we say, "I'm a sinner and

  421. I need saved." You know, and God does

  422. this for us. He sends his spirit into

  423. our hearts and we're crying, "Aba,

  424. Father," and we've been made a son. But

  425. we start out by being born again. And

  426. that's over in chapter 4

  427. and verse 19

  428. there. He says, "My little children." So

  429. that's we got to become children.

  430. Remember Jesus said about the flock, we

  431. got a bird banging the window.

  432. And that's what he said, a little flock.

  433. And here Paul says, "Little children."

  434. So that's that's who we are. We're we're

  435. in the kingdom of God because of

  436. redemption. Turn back to chapter 3 of

  437. Galatians.

  438. Here's here's how we became. There was a

  439. great price paid.

  440. You know, there's none good, know not

  441. one. Well, how are we getting into

  442. heaven if there's none good, know not

  443. one? Well, here's the answer to that

  444. question.

  445. Chapter 3:13. Christ has redeemed us

  446. from the curse of the law being made a

  447. curse for us. As it is written, cursed

  448. is everyone that hangs on a tree that

  449. the blessing of Abraham might come to

  450. the Gentiles through Christ. So we we go

  451. from curse to blessing. We go from dead

  452. to life. And it's through what God has

  453. done that we receive the promise of the

  454. spirit through faith. That's how God did

  455. it. Uh and all these things are

  456. wonderful. And and Paul applied all this

  457. to his own life. Look at look in chapter

  458. 2 verse 20.

  459. Chapter 2 verse 20. You say what

  460. what would uh what would Paul tell us?

  461. Well, here it is. He does tell us, "I am

  462. crucified with Christ. Nevertheless, I

  463. live, yet not I, but Christ in me and

  464. the life I now live in the flesh. I live

  465. by the faith of the son of God who loved

  466. me and gave himself for me." No greater

  467. love. You know, there's and and Paul,

  468. you know, that's what he saw. You know,

  469. God didn't think Paul is was anything

  470. but a sinner. God doesn't think any of

  471. us are anything but sinners.

  472. And Paul sees this and and then he's

  473. looking at the love of God as as as what

  474. transformed him. Um turn over to Romans

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  475. chapter 4.

  476. So God blesses us. We go from being a

  477. curse in Adam to being blessed in

  478. Christ.

  479. You know, Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  480. You guys are familiar with this.

  481. That's Paul's argument about

  482. being justified by faith. You know,

  483. Abraham went, that's what happened to

  484. Abraham. He was justified by faith.

  485. That's where it starts. That's where it

  486. begins. That's where the love of God and

  487. the spirit of God become ours when we

  488. are born again.

  489. and verse three

  490. of chapter 4.

  491. For what does the Bible say? Abraham

  492. believed God and it was counted unto him

  493. for righteousness. For to him that works

  494. is a reward not reckoned of grace but of

  495. debt. But to him that workketh not, but

  496. re believes on him that justifies the

  497. ungodly, his faith is counted for

  498. righteousness. So that's what happens.

  499. We we believe and we're justified and

  500. then we have the spirit of God come to

  501. us because of the new birth and

  502. receiving the righteousness of Christ.

  503. So we we go from being cursed in Adam to

  504. being blessed in Christ.

  505. How it happens. He says the blessing uh

  506. are on those iniquities are forgiven and

  507. whose sins are covered. Well, how does

  508. that happen? Well, through the blood of

  509. Christ. That's what chapter 3 is all

  510. about here. So through redemption, um,

  511. these things become ours in a great way.

  512. Turn over to chapter 5 of Romans

  513. and verse 20.

  514. There's more grace. That's that's that's

  515. what's here in in the love of God.

  516. That's what's amazing is that, you know,

  517. God says, "Okay, I'll save you." and I

  518. my son I'll pay for all your sins. So

  519. now you you've left Adam and now you're

  520. in my son. What a you know what a

  521. transfer we've made and now the

  522. blessings of God rest on us and then

  523. when we sin God gives us more grace

  524. because we're in his son. Say well if

  525. you tell people that they're just going

  526. to go out and sin. Well, God says, the

  527. Bible says, "God forbid that you would

  528. go and do that

  529. knowing that,

  530. but that's the truth." And that's what

  531. verse 20 says. Moreover, the law entered

  532. that the offense might abound. where sin

  533. abounded, grace did much more abound.

  534. That as sin has reigned unto death, even

  535. so grace might reign unto righteousness

  536. and to eternal life through Jesus Christ

  537. our Lord. So if you live as long as

  538. Methuselah,

  539. you know, Jesus, he's died for all our

  540. sin. He paid the the sin debt for us and

  541. uh that's what we need. So remember what

  542. he said up there in chapter 5 of Romans

  543. in in verse 5 he says hope makes not

  544. ashamed because the love of God is shed

  545. abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit

  546. who is given to us. The Holy Spirit's on

  547. a mission to help us see understand the

  548. love of God and the grace of God, the

  549. mercy of God, all these great and

  550. wonderful things that have been given to

  551. us. Remember Paul said that to the

  552. Corinthians.

  553. You know, people want to argue about,

  554. you know, is it by grace or is it by

  555. works. Well, Paul over there says the

  556. deep things of God are freely given to

  557. us. So there's no merit in this. This is

  558. God's love and God's grace and God's

  559. mercy.

  560. I'll turn over to chapter 15 of Romans,

  561. a verse that we stopped by in an earlier

  562. message. But now let's see it again

  563. here. He says in chapter 15 and verse

  564. 30,

  565. "Now I beseech you, brethren, for the

  566. Lord Jesus Christ's sake and for the

  567. love of the spirit." That's what we're

  568. talking about, the love of the Holy

  569. Spirit.

  570. That you strive together with me in your

  571. prayers and to God for me. So, it's

  572. that's a collective thing that we do.

  573. Um, you know, we're we're praying

  574. to God in the love of the Holy Spirit

  575. for each other and and Paul needed

  576. deliverance and and you know rightly so

  577. that man was

  578. sold out for the Lord and everywhere he

  579. went he preached the gospel and got in

  580. lots of trouble didn't he and that's

  581. what he says

  582. look in verse 20 of chapter 15 Romans

    Romans 15:20

  583. 15:20

  584. yay so have I strived to preach preached

  585. the gospel, not where Christ was named,

  586. lest I should build on another man's

  587. foundation. So that's what Paul says.

  588. The love of the spirit, the prayers of

  589. the saints going to help me to go preach

  590. the gospel and and that's what we should

  591. be doing as a church. You know, it's

  592. preaching the gospel and going forth and

  593. doing these things for our Lord. This is

  594. his church. This is as much his church.

  595. When Paul wrote this is 2,000 years

  596. later, this church belongs to the Lord

  597. and we should be striving together. We

  598. should be striving with each other to

  599. get the gospel out.

  600. I'll turn over to Galatians 5. Got a

  601. couple examples where Paul used

  602. the love of the spirit to resolve issues

  603. in the church.

  604. And the first one that we're going to

  605. notice is over here in Galatians. I know

  606. we've been there already, but chapter 5,

  607. if you will, in verse 7.

  608. Galatians 5:7,

    Galatians 5:7

  609. you know the backstory. He says, "You

  610. did run well. Who did hinder you that

  611. you're not obeying the truth? You guys

  612. got off. You you were listening to these

  613. false teachers."

  614. Um he says this persuasion came not of

  615. him that called you. That holy spirit is

  616. not doing this. The one who brought you

  617. the gospel. The one who brought you and

  618. regenerated you. It's not of the spirit.

  619. It's uh it's somewhere else. A little

  620. lev leavenvens the whole lump. I have

  621. confidence in you through the Lord,

  622. that you will be be none otherwise

  623. minded,

  624. that he that trouble you shall bear his

  625. judgment whosoever

  626. he be. And I, brethren, if I yet preach

  627. circumcision, why do I yet suffer

  628. persecution?

  629. Then as the offense of the cross ceased,

  630. I would there were even cut off among

  631. you trouble you. There's a bit of

  632. sarcasm.

  633. For brethren, you have not been called

  634. unto liberty. Only use not your liberty

  635. for the occasion of the flesh, but by

  636. love serve one another. The love of the

  637. spirit, the Holy Spirit that is in us,

  638. the love of God that is in us. You know,

  639. we should be doing what he told the

  640. Romans, striving together for the

  641. advancement of the gospel, united, not

  642. not in troubling each other.

  643. And he says, "You've been called to

  644. liberty. Serve one another." The law is

  645. filled in one word. Love your neighbor

  646. as yourself, but you bite and devour one

  647. another. They weren't loving. They were

  648. eating each other. Cannibals.

  649. And this I say, "Walk in the spirit. You

  650. won't fulfill the lust of the flesh." So

  651. there's God, the Holy Spirit. and and

  652. the love

  653. of the spirit is up there in verse 22 or

  654. excuse me the fruit of the spirit is

  655. love the very first one joy peace

  656. longsuffering

  657. and he goes on so pride had caused a

  658. problem here they you know they were you

  659. know wandered away from the truth and

  660. Paul calls them back to the truth and he

  661. calls them back uh to fellowship with

  662. one another by listening to the spirit

  663. and walking in the spirit. And then over

  664. in chapter 6 and verse 8,

  665. for he that sws to the flesh shall the

  666. flesh reap corruption, but he that sws

  667. to the spirit shall the spirit reap life

  668. everlasting. So the flesh and the spirit

  669. are going in opposite direction. And

  670. those who are in the spirit then should

  671. be, you know, helping those who have

  672. struggled. That's what chapter 6 is all

  673. about here. So, a good example for us to

  674. see walking in the spirit and

  675. understanding these things.

  676. Turn over to John chapter 3. Back to the

    John 3 chapter mention

  677. gospel.

  678. John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  679. These two go together.

  680. the Holy Spirit

  681. and the word of God

  682. together.

  683. And

  684. there's

  685. every every every church that was

  686. started, every, you know, everything in

  687. the New Testament,

  688. there were two things that started it.

  689. There was the spirit of God and the word

  690. of God.

  691. And that hasn't changed. And that's what

  692. Jesus told Nicodemus here in chapter 3.

  693. And this is a good place for us to see

  694. this. I know you're familiar with it.

  695. But God's provision for us in the church

  696. is his word and his spirit.

  697. That's the two. That's the word is our

  698. weapon. You know, Paul said that to the

  699. Corinthians. I I don't need I don't need

  700. anything else. I don't need any other

  701. weapons. You know, the the world's

  702. weapons are carnal. The devil's weapons

  703. are carnal, but not Paul.

  704. He said, "My weapon is the word of God

  705. and the spirit of God."

  706. And here the two go together. And here

  707. Jesus told Nicodemus

  708. a very similar thing. In fact, he tells

  709. him the exact same thing.

  710. He says here in verse 5, "Verily,

  711. verily, I say unto you, except a man be

  712. born of water," and that's not H2O.

  713. That's the word of God

  714. and of the spirit. These are both

  715. provided by God. God doesn't need water

  716. on this earth to save us.

  717. You know, that's that's another subject

  718. for another day.

  719. But he does need the word of God, the

  720. water of the word

  721. and and the preaching of the word so

  722. that the spirit can do his job.

  723. And that's what he says in verse six.

  724. That which is born of the flesh is

  725. flesh.

  726. So that's you know earthly anything is

  727. is not heavenly word the word the water.

  728. And he says here and that which is born

  729. of the spirit is spirit.

  730. Marvel not that I said unto you, you

  731. must be born again. So those are the two

  732. ways to bring it about. The only two is

  733. through the word of God and through the

  734. spirit of God. Nicodemus was amazed.

  735. Jesus said, "What? You you're a teacher

  736. in Israel and you don't know about the

  737. new birth?

  738. It's in the Old Testament. It's not just

  739. something that was in the New

  740. Testament."

  741. And then he says, "The wind blows."

  742. Here's the hard part for us because we,

  743. you know, we can only see,

  744. you know, with our eyes, we can only see

  745. these temporal things. But, you know,

  746. God's at work.

  747. When his word goes forth

  748. and when his spirit goes forth,

  749. God is working.

  750. The wind blows where it wills, and now

  751. hearth the sound of it, but you can't

  752. tell from where it come from and where

  753. it goes. So is everyone that is born of

  754. the spirit.

  755. So that's what the new birth is. We're

  756. born of the spirit. So all the way back

  757. to the love of God. All the way back to

  758. what John told us back there in 1 John

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  759. chapter 4. God is love and they that are

  760. of God love. So the Holy Spirit is the

  761. member of the Trinity that comes and

  762. does these things and brings these

  763. things to us and for us and and he says

  764. you're a teacher of Israel and you don't

  765. know these things.

  766. So you know he couldn't Nicodemus

  767. couldn't have used the word for a weapon

  768. about the new birth and the spirit. He

  769. was he was like the rest of them. You

  770. know, I'm going to be born again for

  771. born, go back and be born for my mother.

  772. No, no, Nicodemus,

  773. it's something far greater.

  774. And then Jesus,

  775. there's our Did Jesus say this or did

  776. John say this in verse 16?

  777. I don't know. I never solved that

  778. mystery.

  779. who made

  780. for God so loved the world that he gave

  781. his only begotten son that whosoever

  782. believeth in him will not perish but

  783. have everlasting life. So here we see

  784. God the father, God the spirit, God the

  785. son and the demonstration

  786. of their love. But we don't want to

  787. neglect the truth when we try to to help

  788. people and show people what the truth

  789. is.

  790. And you remember the woman at the well

  791. in verse 10, John 4:10,

    John 4:10

  792. he talks about the gift and the living

  793. water. Here it is. That's why this

  794. isn't, you know, water baptism. This is

  795. the living water of the word of God. If

  796. you knew the gift of God and who it is

  797. that said to thee, give me to drink. You

  798. would have asked him and he would give

  799. thee living water. There's our living

  800. water that he told Nicodemus about.

  801. And then he says in verse 14, "Whosoever

  802. drinks of the water that I give him

  803. shall never thirst again. But he um but

  804. the water that I give him shall be in

  805. him a well of water springing up to

  806. everlasting life." That's what happens

  807. when we're born again.

  808. God gives us a regenerated

  809. heart, regenerated man. and he gives us

  810. the Holy Spirit and and we went from

  811. being, you know, thirsty

  812. um to having a well of water springing

  813. up in us and it's the Holy Spirit.

  814. If you will look in verse 42,

  815. John 4:42, he said to the woman, the

    John 4:42

  816. same woman, this is sometime later over

  817. in the town.

  818. And he said to the woman, "Now, now we

  819. believe,

  820. not because of thy sayings,

  821. but we have heard him ourselves and know

  822. this indeed is the Christ, the savior of

  823. the world." So, we need to hear the

  824. gospel. We need to have the spirit come

  825. and and lead us and direct us and bring

  826. us to Christ.

  827. Now, John chapter 5

    John 5 chapter mention

  828. and verse 24. This one we've talked

  829. about a couple times, but

  830. you know, here's the spiritual

  831. resurrection from the spirit.

  832. You know, when the Holy Spirit comes and

  833. and and we are regenerated, we are born

  834. again like he told Nicodemus to be born

  835. again. Here's how that happens. In verse

  836. 24, he says, "Verily, verily, I say unto

  837. you, he that hears my word,

  838. just like you're hearing it now, hearing

  839. the word of God and believes on him that

  840. sent me has everlasting life and shall

  841. not come into judgment, but is passed

  842. from death and into life." There's that

  843. regeneration. And then here's the the

  844. spiritual resurrection. And this is

  845. parallel with what the books, the Bible

  846. says in Romans chapter 6 when it says

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  847. that we were made alive. Well, here's

  848. how and when we were made alive

  849. spiritually.

  850. The hour is coming and now is when the

  851. dead shall hear the voice of the son of

  852. God and they that hear it shall live.

  853. You know, that's the regeneration part

  854. when when the spirit and the and the

  855. word uh bring us the new birth and

  856. regenerate us and bring us new life.

  857. Father has life in himself and he's

  858. given son to have life in himself.

  859. That's the difference between us and

  860. God. God has life and we don't.

  861. We need it. Marvel not at this. The hour

  862. is coming and those in their grave will

  863. hear his voice and they will come forth.

  864. Those that have done good to the

  865. resurrection of life, they that have

  866. done bad to the resurrection of

  867. damnation.

  868. Turn over to chapter 8. John chapter 8

    John 8 chapter mention

  869. and verse 45.

  870. And Jesus tells the Pharisees, "And

  871. because I tell you the truth,

  872. you believe me not."

  873. There are people that resist the gospel.

  874. There are people that hear the gospel

  875. and say, "Nope, not for me. Not today."

  876. You know, some some some say, "Not

  877. ever."

  878. And uh you know, they they never come.

  879. So, as well, Stephen talked about the

  880. Jews resisting the Holy Spirit in Acts

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  881. chapter 7.

  882. So people resist, people put up a fight,

  883. people uh they they don't want to do

  884. what the spirit is trying to lead them

  885. uh to do, you know, and

  886. many of them become

  887. they make themselves God, you know, they

  888. just I I don't need God. I'm I think I'm

  889. doing a pretty good job myself,

  890. you know, in their pride.

  891. But we had similar things with the

  892. Pharisees and the scribes.

  893. And if you will turn over to John 2

  894. 10:23,

  895. John chapter 10

    John 10:23

  896. verse 23.

  897. And Jesus walked out in the temple onto

  898. Solomon's porch. And the Jews around him

  899. heard him. How long do you make us

  900. doubt? If you be the Christ, tell us

  901. plainly. So this is getting cro close

  902. to the crucifixion

  903. and the conversation that Jesus has with

  904. them here is an example of those who

  905. resist the spirit, those who won't

  906. believe, those who, you know, they they

  907. won't um trust Christ. They won't come

  908. to him.

  909. And he says similar things, you won't

  910. come to me that you might have life.

  911. And here in verse 25, I told you and you

  912. believe not. So there you can see even

  913. Jesus had

  914. uh people who didn't believe him.

  915. He's the son of God. So if he had people

  916. that didn't believe him, we can expect a

  917. similar thing. And then he says, "The

  918. works that I do are my father's name.

  919. They bear witness of me." So, not only

  920. was, you know, Jesus a good preacher, he

  921. was pretty good at living out his life

  922. and fulfilling all the Old Testament

  923. verses about himself. And still they

  924. believe not. And he says, "You are not

  925. of my sheep as I have said unto you. My

  926. sheep hear my voice and I know them and

  927. they follow me." That's us. That's the

  928. elect. We, you know, we look at Jesus

  929. differently than the world does. The

  930. world wants nothing to do with them.

  931. don't think he's worthy of our time, but

  932. we see that we He is worthy of our

  933. times. He's given to us eternal life.

  934. They shall never perish, neither shall

  935. any pluck them out of my hand. My father

  936. who gave them to me is greater than all,

  937. and no man is able to pluck them out of

  938. my father's hand. I and my father are

  939. one. They took up the stones, and he

  940. said, "Many good works that I have done

  941. to you from my father. Which of those

  942. are you going to stone me? Why are you

  943. going to kill me? said Jesus. What I do

  944. wrong?

  945. He answers nothing.

  946. And they said unto him, for a good work

  947. we stone thee not, but for blasphemy

  948. because you being a man make yourself

  949. God.

  950. So we see the rejection of Jesus. We see

  951. the resistance

  952. that people put up about Jesus. We can

  953. expect the same and is not written in

  954. your law. I said you are gods and if he

  955. called him gods uh who the word of God

  956. came and scriptures cannot be broken.

  957. Say ye of him whom the father has

  958. sanctified and sent into the world. You

  959. blasphe because I am the son of God. And

  960. if I do not the works of my father, you

  961. believe me not. But if I do those works

  962. um

  963. uh believe the works that you may know

  964. and believe that the father is in me and

  965. I in him. So that's Jesus wrapping up

  966. his ministry and the the rejection and

  967. the resistance that many people gave him

  968. because of these things that we're

  969. reading about here. So again, that's a

  970. part of the love of God is is like Paul

  971. said is preaching the gospel and telling

  972. others about about Christ, who he is and

  973. what he's done.

  974. So, you know, we've been delivered from

  975. sin's dominion through the work of

  976. Christ. That's what the book of Romans

  977. says about, you know, there in chapter 7

  978. and 8. If you would go to Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  979. 8,

  980. Romans 8,

  981. back to the, you know, the work of

  982. Christ making us sons of God, giving us

  983. the Holy Spirit and the love of the

  984. spirit.

  985. And as well, we've been removed from the

  986. condemnation

  987. of God because of what Christ has done.

  988. That's what this whole chapter

  989. is about here.

  990. In verse three, he says, "For the law

  991. could not do and that was weak through

  992. the flesh. God sending his own son in

  993. the likeness of flesh and for sin

  994. condemns him in sin in the flesh." So

  995. you know Jesus has advanced us beyond

  996. what we were in Adam as the sinners. We

  997. now we have his righteousness. Now you

  998. know the heaven the gavvel in heaven has

  999. dropped. And God he's made us righteous.

1000. And that's what verse four says that the

1001. righteousness of the law might be

1002. fulfilled in us who walk not after the

1003. flesh but after the spirit. So, we're,

1004. you know, we've left our flesh and and

1005. we're walking in the spirit of God,

1006. not fulfilling the lust of the flesh.

1007. And that's what verse 5 says, they that

  1008. are of the flesh

1009. um minded things of the flesh. They that

1010. are spirit minded things of the spirit.

1011. So, you know, the spirit is in us, you

1012. know, to teach us and to help us and to

1013. guide us into these things. We're not,

1014. you know, that's why we're not under the

1015. law. That's, you know, we needed to be

1016. born again. Once that has happened,

1017. we've been, we've been freed from the

1018. dominion of the law. We've been freed

1019. from the dominion of sin. And we've been

  1020. put in God's presence

1021. because of the work of Christ.

1022. And that's what this is all about down

  1023. through here.

1024. and and we become hes.

  1025. Um

  1026. verse 14,

1027. for as many are led by the spirit of

1028. God, they're the sons of God. So the

1029. spirit of God's the one who leads us.

1030. You know, God knows what we need and we

1031. need the spirit and we need the word of

1032. God. The two things that brought about

  1033. our new birth.

1034. And we keep right on going. We keep

1035. right on walking. for you have not

1036. received the spirit of bondage again to

  1037. fear.

1038. We shouldn't, you know, go back to like

1039. we were. We can't operate in fear.

1040. Although we do fear God,

1041. but you know, we have a relationship

  1042. with God now

1043. because of his son and through his son.

1044. And you know, God did a very gracious

1045. thing when he gave us his spirit.

1046. And as Romans 5:5 says that the love of

    Romans 5:5

1047. God is shed abroad in our hearts because

  1048. of that spirit.

1049. And and we're adopted by God. We, you

1050. know, he's become our father.

1051. And then the spirit that we have

1052. bears witness with our spirit. So, you

1053. know, they're they're these two are side

1054. by side. You know, many times we have

1055. verses that that talk about the spirit

1056. of man, the spirit of God, them being

1057. side by side. You know, that's the great

1058. fight that that's going on within us.

1059. That's the war that's going on within

  1060. us.

1061. But the spirit's going to win out

1062. because we're going to leave everything

  1063. in the grave.

1064. you know, our our flesh

1065. and our sin nature is going to remain in

1066. the grave and we're going to be

1067. resurrected with a glorified body.

1068. Paul tells the Corinthians as the word

  1069. of God tells everyone.

1070. So, we're children, we're hes of God,

1071. we're joint hes with Christ.

1072. If so be that we suffer with him, we'll

  1073. be glorified

1074. together. So suffering is a part of a

  1075. Christian's our life.

1076. You know, it doesn't mean, you know,

1077. that we're not children of God. Well,

  1078. I'm not a child of God. I had a flat

1079. tire. I'm not a child of God. My car

  1080. wouldn't start. I not a child of God. I,

1081. you know, I bounced a check, you know.

1082. I'm not a child of God for fill in the

  1083. blank,

1084. you know. No, we are are children of

1085. God. And those things are going to

  1086. happen.

1087. And uh we can we can suffer here

1088. and know that all of our suffering here

1089. is for a greater cause. And that's what

1090. Paul goes on to say.

1091. There's there's nothing um he says here,

1092. I recognize the sufferings of this

1093. present time are not worthy to be

1094. compared to the glory that's going to be

1095. revealed in us. The Holy Spirit's in

1096. them. You know, the new birth, we we've

  1097. been transferred. We've been

  1098. transported. We've been transformed.

1099. We've been made a child of God.

  1100. You know, we're a part of God's program.

  1101. We're a part of God's will.

1102. And you know, nobody suffered like Paul

1103. did. So, if Paul didn't complain, who

  1104. are we?

  1105. And um

1106. he said, "The earnest expectation of the

1107. creation for the manifestation of the

1108. sons of God." What's this? Well, God has

1109. creation on hold while he saves sinners.

1110. You know, that's uh what these verses

1111. are saying. And then he goes on to talk

1112. about the the wrestling going on in us

1113. there in verse 26. And then guess what?

  1114. Over to chapter 8,

  1115. verse 35.

1116. You know, God didn't give us God didn't

1117. give us the new birth. and make us his

1118. children. Give us his spirit. Give us

1119. the fruit of the spirit. Give us all the

1120. gifts of the church. And and and we can

1121. go on and on and on. God didn't do all

1122. this for us to live like pulpers or fill

  1123. in the blank.

1124. No, God did all these things. We we

1125. would live as his children and get this

1126. gospel out, bring others in.

1127. And then he says over here in

  1128. chapter 35,

  1129. I'm sorry, there aren't 35 chapters in

1130. Romans. How about verse 35?

  1131. >> Yeah, chapter 8.

  1132. And you know,

1133. this is how Paul closes out the love of

  1134. God.

1135. What shall separate us from the love of

  1136. Christ? tribulation, distress,

1137. persecution, famine, nakedness, peril or

1138. sword. For it is written, for thy sake

1139. we are killed all the day long as

1140. accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

1141. You sometimes life doesn't look very

1142. good for us. We look like we we are

1143. sheep headed for a slaughter.

1144. But nay, in all these things, we're more

1145. than conquerors to him that loved us.

1146. And we're saved because he loved us.

  1147. That's the only reason we're saved.

1148. There's no other reason uh that could

1149. be. We're not worthy. And I am persuaded

1150. that neither death nor life, nor angels,

1151. nor principalities, nor powers, nor

1152. things present, nor things to come, nor

1153. height, nor depth, nor any other

1154. creature shall be able to separate us

1155. from the love of God, which is in Christ

1156. Jesus our Lord. That'll get you into

1157. heaven. Why am I here? we get to heaven,

1158. if you're beaten on the door and they

1159. want to know why you should be let in,

  1160. just tell them this.

1161. Um, the love of Christ

  1162. was shed abroad for me, I'm a I'm a

1163. filthy sinner and he died for me and

1164. he's given me eternal life and and I

1165. have a right to be here, not in anything

1166. that I've done, but in everything that

  1167. he's done.

1168. God had a wonderful plan when he sent

  1169. his son.

1170. So, I'm glad God just doesn't leave us

  1171. in our sin

1172. and, you know, hope for more when we get

1173. to heaven. No, we can hope for more now.

1174. And that's what the Lord wants us to do,

1175. to walk in his spirit and in his love.

  1176. Let's pray.

1177. We do thank you, Holy Spirit, for

1178. dwelling within us. We thank you for the

1179. word of God and we thank you for the

  1180. love of the spirit

1181. that is here to be a part of our lives

1182. now and to work on us and to help us to

  1183. become more like Jesus.

1184. And uh we thank you for these things and

1185. pray your blessings upon our day today.

1186. Thank you for the good week that we've

1187. had and this day of rest. We thank you

1188. for the rest that you've given us in

1189. your son. And we pray in Jesus name.

  1190. Amen.

1191. Lord, as we go from this place

  1192. loving you more,

  1193. trusting you more.

1194. May the power of your love and the light

1195. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1196. world as we go from this place.
