  1. Such a joy to worship and sing with you guys.

  2. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Sean.

  3. I'm one of the pastors of Trinity Cambridge Church,

  4. and it's my joy and privilege to preach God's Word to you this morning.

  5. If you have a Bible, please turn with me to John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  6. We have been in a series in the book of Exodus,

  7. but for Palm Sunday and Good Friday and Easter,

  8. we're going to be in the book of John.

  9. If you don't have a Bible, just feel free to raise your hand,

  10. and we'll bring a Bible along to you that you can use while you're here.

  11. John is in the New Testament after the book of Luke

  12. and before the book of Acts.

  13. And let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's Word.

  14. Father, we humble ourselves before you,

  15. submit ourselves to your Word, to your authority.

  16. We ask that in the preaching of your Word this morning

  17. and in the hearing of your Word,

  18. that Jesus Christ, your Son, our King, would be exalted.

  19. That He would be made known,

  20. made more real in our hearts,

  21. magnified in our minds,

  22. so that we might follow Him

  23. in His footsteps

  24. toward the glory of the cross.

  25. In Jesus' name we pray.

  26. Amen.

  27. If you are able, please stand with me

  28. for the reading of God's Word

  29. from John 12, verses 12 to 33.

    John 12:12–33

  30. The next day,

  31. the large crowd that had come to the feast

  32. heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

  33. So they took branches of palm trees

  34. and went out to meet Him,

  35. crying out,

  36. Hosanna!

  37. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord,

  38. even the King of Israel.

  39. And Jesus found a young donkey

  40. and sat on it,

  41. just as it is written,

  42. Fear not, daughter of Zion.

  43. Behold, your King is coming,

  44. sitting on a donkey's colt.

  45. His disciples did not understand

  46. these things at first.

  47. But when Jesus was glorified,

  48. then they remembered that these things

  49. had been written about Him

  50. and had been done to Him.

  51. The crowd that had been with Him

  52. when He called Lazarus out of the tomb

  53. and raised Him from the dead

  54. continued to bear witness.

  55. The reason why the crowd went to meet Him

  56. was that they heard He had done the sign.

  57. So the Pharisees said to one another,

  58. You see that you are gaining nothing.

  59. Look!

  60. The world has gone after Him.

  61. Now among those who went up to worship at the feast

  62. were some Greeks.

  63. So these came to Philip,

  64. who was from Bethsaida in Galilee,

  65. and asked him,

  66. Sir, we wish to see Jesus.

  67. Philip went and told Andrew.

  68. Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

  69. And Jesus answered them,

  70. The hour has come

  71. for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  72. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  73. unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies,

  74. it remains alone.

  75. But if it dies,

  76. it bears much fruit.

  77. Whoever loves his life loses it,

  78. and whoever hates his life in this world

  79. will keep it for eternal life.

  80. If anyone serves me,

  81. he must follow me.

  82. And where I am,

  83. there will my servant be also.

  84. If anyone serves me,

  85. the Father will honor him.

  86. Now is my soul troubled.

  87. And what shall I say?

  88. Father, save me from this hour?

  89. But for this purpose,

  90. I have come to this hour.

  91. Father, glorify your name.

  92. Then a voice came from heaven.

  93. I have glorified it,

  94. and I will glorify it again.

  95. The crowd that stood there and heard it said

  96. that it had thundered.

  97. Others said,

  98. An angel has spoken to him.

  99. Jesus answered,

  100. This voice has come for your sake,

  101. not mine.

  102. Now is the judgment of this world.

  103. Now will the ruler of this world be cast out,

  104. and I,

  105. when I am lifted up from the earth,

  106. will draw all people to myself.

  107. He said this to show by what kind of death

  108. he was going to die.

  109. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  110. You may be seated.

  111. Nowadays,

  112. it's not uncommon for people to have virtual friends,

  113. whether it's a friend you made on Reddit,

  114. or while playing a game online,

  115. or someone you met on a dating app.

  116. So it's likely that

  117. some of you have also had the experience

  118. of meeting someone,

  119. a virtual friend,

  120. in person

  121. for the first time,

  122. only to find out

  123. that this friend of yours

  124. that you thought you knew

  125. is nothing at all

  126. like the person you had imagined.

  127. Maybe the profile picture

  128. was a little bit outdated.

  129. Maybe you imagined him

  130. to have a deep,

  131. baritone voice,

  132. but instead,

  133. he has a high,

  134. squeaky voice.

  135. Maybe you imagined him,

  136. maybe you imagined her

  137. to have,

  138. you know,

  139. a social,

  140. you know,

  141. be social and talkative,

  142. but in real life,

  143. she's very withdrawn,

  144. and maybe timid,

  145. tends to isolate herself.

  146. It can be a jarring experience

  147. when your expectations

  148. are not met.

  149. It's upended.

  150. And often for us,

  151. the reality is worse

  152. than our fantasies.

  153. For hundreds of years,

  154. the Jews had also been

  155. waiting for something,

  156. expecting someone.

  157. They'd been waiting

  158. for the Messiah,

  159. the King,

  160. the Savior,

  161. to come and redeem them

  162. and rescue them.

  163. Having been conquered

  164. by nation after nation,

  165. Assyrians,

  166. Babylonians,

  167. Persians,

  168. and Greeks,

  169. and then finally

  170. under the Romans,

  171. the Jews had been longing

  172. desperately for the Messiah

  173. finally to come.

  174. Their expectations

  175. were high,

  176. and their anticipation

  177. was at a fever pitch

  178. by the time of this event.

  179. But when Jesus,

  180. the Messianic King,

  181. finally came,

  182. he was not

  183. what the Jews

  184. expected him to be.

  185. He came in humility.

  186. He came in mercy.

  187. He came to die.

  188. And to follow Jesus,

  189. that means,

  190. for us,

  191. is to follow his path

  192. to glory through death.

  193. That's the main point

  194. of this passage.

  195. To follow King Jesus,

  196. is to follow him,

  197. his path,

  198. to glory through death.

  199. And we're going to explore

  200. three ways in which

  201. Jesus defied

  202. the people's expectations.

  203. First,

  204. the King's agenda.

  205. Second,

  206. the King's audience.

  207. And the third,

  208. the King's ascendance.

  209. The setting for this scene

  210. is the Passover feast,

  211. which is the greatest

  212. and most widely observed feast

  213. of all the Jewish feasts.

  214. Verse 12 notes

  215. that there was a large crowd

  216. that had come to feast.

  217. And that's not an understatement.

  218. Or that's not an overstatement,

  219. rather.

  220. Jerusalem's normal population

  221. around this time

  222. is estimated to be

  223. about 30,000 people.

  224. But during Passover,

  225. historians estimate

  226. that the number of people

  227. in Jerusalem

  228. swelled to around 200,000.

  229. And so obviously,

  230. that city can't fit

  231. 200,000 people,

  232. so people would pitch tents

  233. all around the city,

  234. and the whole city

  235. would be bustling

  236. with the influx of pilgrims,

  237. tens of thousands of them.

  238. And a large crowd

  239. in a section of the city

  240. hears that Jesus

  241. is approaching the city,

  242. says in verse 12.

  243. And the teacher,

  244. this teacher that is famous

  245. for his authoritative teaching,

  246. this healer

  247. who's healed cripples

  248. and the man born blind,

  249. this miracle worker

  250. who not long ago

  251. raised Lazarus

  252. from the dead,

  253. is coming.

  254. So notice that Jesus

  255. is already famous

  256. among the people.

  257. He says in verses 17 to 18,

  258. the crowd that had been with him

  259. when he called Lazarus

  260. out of the tomb

  261. and raised him from the dead

  262. continued to bear witness.

  263. The reason why the crowd

  264. went to meet him

  265. was that they heard

  266. he had done these things.

  267. So Jesus is a celebrity.

  268. Here, people are flocking

  269. to just get a glimpse

  270. of this man

  271. who raised someone

  272. from the dead

  273. when they hear

  274. that he is approaching.

  275. So everywhere,

  276. you're hearing murmurs

  277. of people,

  278. hey, there, Jesus.

  279. Jesus is coming.

  280. I think that's Jesus over there.

  281. Some people are shouting,

  282. hey, Jesus.

  283. Jesus is coming.

  284. Make way.

  285. The men of God

  286. who raised a man

  287. from the dead.

  288. And what this large crowd

  289. expects from Jesus

  290. is clearly seen

  291. in the following verses.

  292. It says in verse 13,

  293. the Jews took branches

  294. of palm trees

  295. and went out to meet him,

  296. crying out,

  297. Hosanna!

  298. Blessed is he who comes

  299. in the name of the Lord.

  300. Even the king of Israel.

  301. This is a quotation

  302. from Psalm 118,

  303. which says,

  304. Save us, we pray, O Lord.

  305. O Lord, we pray,

  306. give us success.

  307. Blessed is he who comes

  308. in the name of the Lord.

  309. Hosanna!

  310. is a Greek translation

  311. of the Hebrew phrase

  312. that means save us.

  313. So this psalm

  314. was sung

  315. during many

  316. of the Jewish feasts,

  317. such as the Feast of Tabernacles

  318. and the Feast of Passover.

  319. So observant Jews

  320. would have been

  321. intimately familiar with it.

  322. They probably knew it by heart.

  323. But this psalm

  324. was originally used

  325. to pronounce blessing

  326. on those who were coming

  327. to worship the Lord,

  328. coming in the name of the Lord

  329. to worship him.

  330. But the Jewish commentary

  331. on this psalm

  332. also reveals

  333. that the Jews

  334. understood this line

  335. messianically.

  336. The one who comes

  337. in the name of the Lord

  338. that they were expecting

  339. to see

  340. is the Messiah himself.

  341. And the messianic interpretation

  342. is confirmed

  343. by what the crowd

  344. says afterward.

  345. Blessed is he

  346. who comes

  347. in the name of the Lord,

  348. even the King

  349. of Israel.

  350. The crowd

  351. surrounding Jesus

  352. is proclaiming

  353. Jesus

  354. to be the King,

  355. the promised Messiah.

  356. Remember that

  357. at this time

  358. the Jews are under

  359. Roman occupation.

  360. Imagine that you

  361. were the Roman governor

  362. at this time,

  363. over Jerusalem

  364. at this time.

  365. You're already

  366. on high alert

  367. because there's

  368. an unusually

  369. large gathering

  370. of Jews

  371. in the city

  372. and with just

  373. the right spark

  374. crowds can quickly

  375. flame into mobs,

  376. dangerous mobs.

  377. And not only that,

  378. there are Jews,

  379. these are Jews

  380. that are gathering

  381. to celebrate

  382. the Passover

  383. which is when

  384. the Lord delivered

  385. the nation of Israel

  386. from another oppressor,

  387. from another

  388. occupying nation,

  389. the Egyptians.

  390. Egyptians.

  391. It's the Jewish

  392. equivalent of

  393. American Independence Day

  394. as I've said before.

  395. So Jewish religious

  396. fervor and national

  397. patriotism is

  398. peaking right

  399. at this season.

  400. So it's code red

  401. if you're the administrator,

  402. if you're the governor

  403. of this city.

  404. And this brazen

  405. Jewish crowd,

  406. instead of

  407. minding their

  408. overlords,

  409. starts proclaiming,

  410. here is the

  411. King of Israel,

  412. save us.

  413. save them from what?

  414. From the Romans,

  415. of course.

  416. In the Roman Empire,

  417. there's only one king,

  418. Caesar.

  419. This is a treasonous

  420. statement.

  421. And the palm branches

  422. provide yet another

  423. clue to what the

  424. crowd is expecting.

  425. These are not palm trees

  426. you find in California

  427. and Florida.

  428. These are date palm trees

  429. which are a lot shorter

  430. and very numerous

  431. in this region.

  432. And the Old Testament

  433. doesn't prescribe

  434. anywhere that people

  435. should worship God

  436. with palm trees

  437. during the Passover

  438. feast.

  439. But this had become

  440. a national symbol

  441. by this time

  442. for a number of reasons.

  443. Just two centuries

  444. earlier,

  445. when the Syrian

  446. ruler Antiochus

  447. Epiphanes

  448. overran Jerusalem

  449. and desecrated

  450. the Jewish temple

  451. by setting up

  452. a pagan altar

  453. inside it,

  454. the Jews,

  455. under the leadership

  456. of the Maccabee brothers,

  457. Judas,

  458. Jonathan,

  459. and Simon,

  460. staged a successful

  461. military campaign

  462. to recapture

  463. and re-consecrate

  464. the Jewish temple.

  465. And it's written

  466. in the first book

  467. of Maccabee,

  468. chapter 13,

  469. verse 51,

  470. that on the 23rd day

  471. of the second month

  472. in the 171st year,

  473. the Jews entered it,

  474. the temple,

  475. with praise

  476. and palm branches

  477. and with harps

  478. and cymbals

  479. and stringed instruments

  480. and with hymns

  481. and songs

  482. because a great enemy

  483. had been crushed

  484. and removed

  485. from Israel.

  486. Simon Maccabee

  487. and his men

  488. triumphantly entered

  489. the temple

  490. that they had retaken

  491. and rededicated

  492. in carrying palm branches.

  493. And so by greeting

  494. Jesus with palm branches,

  495. these Jews

  496. are betraying

  497. their true expectations.

  498. They want Jesus

  499. to be another

  500. Simon Maccabee.

  501. They want Jesus

  502. to lead them

  503. into military victory

  504. and political liberation

  505. from the Roman

  506. occupiers.

  507. But Jesus defies

  508. their expectations

  509. in verses 14 to 15.

  510. It says,

  511. Jesus found

  512. a young donkey

  513. and sat on it.

  514. Just as it is written,

  515. Fear not,

  516. daughter of Zion,

  517. behold,

  518. your king is coming,

  519. sitting on a donkey's colt.

  520. This is a reference

  521. to Isaiah 49

  522. and Zechariah 99.

  523. Zechariah 99

  524. we read during the

  525. call to worship

  526. which speaks of

  527. how the Messianic king

  528. will come riding

  529. on a donkey,

  530. humble and mounted

  531. on a donkey.

  532. By procuring a donkey

  533. and sitting on it,

  534. Jesus is consciously

  535. fulfilling this

  536. Messianic prophecy

  537. of Zechariah.

  538. So in doing so,

  539. he is confirming

  540. the crowd's expectation

  541. on one hand,

  542. that he is

  543. the Messianic king.

  544. So there's a,

  545. and I say this

  546. every Palm Sunday,

  547. but there's a widespread

  548. misunderstanding

  549. that riding on a donkey

  550. is a lowly,

  551. humble thing,

  552. something reserved

  553. for the common village folk.

  554. But that's not true.

  555. Common village folk

  556. don't ride donkeys,

  557. they walk.

  558. In fact,

  559. riding a donkey

  560. is a sign of royalty.

  561. To give you some examples,

  562. Judges 10

  563. says that

  564. Jair of Gilead,

  565. a judge of Israel

  566. for 22 years,

  567. had 30 sons

  568. who rode 30 donkeys.

  569. They ride donkeys

  570. because they're the rulers.

  571. 1 Kings 1, 32-35,

  572. when King David

  573. commands Zadok the priest

  574. and Nathan the prophet

  575. to have Solomon his son

  576. ride on his own mule

  577. when he wants to declare

  578. that he is his choice

  579. for his successor

  580. to reign as king.

  581. Riding on David's mule

  582. showed David's stamp

  583. of approval

  584. that Solomon

  585. is the royal heir.

  586. Finally,

  587. there's a letter

  588. that archaeologists

  589. found from Mari,

  590. which was an ancient

  591. Sumerian city

  592. around 1760 BC.

  593. It says this,

  594. Verily,

  595. you are the king

  596. of the Heneans,

  597. but secondly,

  598. you are the king

  599. of the Akkadians.

  600. My lord should not

  601. ride a horse.

  602. Let my lord ride

  603. in a chariot

  604. or on a mule,

  605. and he will thereby

  606. honor his royal head.

  607. A military general

  608. seeking to conquer

  609. a city

  610. would ride in

  611. galloping on a stallion,

  612. but a king

  613. who owns the city

  614. will come in peace,

  615. and he would trot

  616. in on a mule.

  617. Jesus knew this

  618. full well,

  619. and that's precisely

  620. why he chose

  621. to ride on a young donkey

  622. into Jerusalem.

  623. Jesus is not being demure

  624. about his kingship.

  625. He's putting the whole city

  626. on notice,

  627. saying,

  628. I am the king.

  629. I am the Messiah,

  630. and here I come.

  631. And Jesus is riding

  632. on a donkey,

  633. and I love imagining

  634. this scene

  635. from Mount of Olives.

  636. We know from the other gospels,

  637. Jerusalem is filled

  638. with the pilgrims

  639. all on their foot.

  640. According to the Mishnah,

  641. which is the Jewish

  642. oral commentary

  643. on the Torah,

  644. Jews were specifically

  645. expected to arrive

  646. in Jerusalem

  647. for their pilgrimage

  648. on foot.

  649. So tens of thousands

  650. of pilgrims,

  651. perhaps hundreds

  652. of thousands of pilgrims,

  653. all on foot.

  654. And Jesus and his disciples

  655. are always on foot.

  656. This is the only time

  657. in the gospels

  658. that he is riding

  659. any kind of animal.

  660. And yet,

  661. in a sea of people

  662. on foot,

  663. there is one man

  664. rising above

  665. the whole crowd,

  666. and he is sitting

  667. on a mule,

  668. and he's riding in

  669. as the glorious king.

  670. Heads are turning.

  671. People are making way.

  672. It's a glorious scene.

  673. It's the king's arrival.

  674. But on the other hand,

  675. Jesus is also correcting

  676. the crowd's

  677. messianic expectations.

  678. Remember the palm branches.

  679. The Jews are hoping

  680. and expecting Jesus

  681. to be another Simon Maccabee,

  682. a rebel,

  683. an insurrectionist,

  684. a revolutionary,

  685. a conquering king,

  686. galloping in on a stallion

  687. to rally his troops

  688. and wage war against

  689. the cruel oppressors.

  690. But instead,

  691. Jesus trots in gently,

  692. meekly,

  693. on a donkey's colt.

  694. I mentioned to you earlier

  695. that verse 15

  696. is a quotation

  697. of Zechariah 9.9,

  698. but if you turn

  699. to Zechariah 9.9

  700. and read the verse

  701. that follows immediately

  702. after that,

  703. verse 10,

  704. it says this,

  705. I will cut off

  706. the chariot from Ephraim

  707. and the war horse

  708. from Jerusalem

  709. and the battle bow

  710. shall be cut off

  711. and he shall speak

  712. peace to the nations.

  713. His rule shall be

  714. from sea to sea

  715. and from the river

  716. to the ends

  717. of the earth.

  718. Jesus speaks

  719. peace to the nations.

  720. He cuts off

  721. the battle bow

  722. and the war horse.

  723. But the Israelites

  724. did not want Jesus

  725. to speak peace

  726. to the nations.

  727. They wanted him

  728. to speak vengeance

  729. to the nations.

  730. Do you think

  731. that there weren't

  732. any Jewish women

  733. who were raped

  734. by Roman soldiers

  735. during this time?

  736. Do you think

  737. there weren't

  738. any Jewish men

  739. who were unjustly

  740. tried and arrested

  741. and maybe even killed?

  742. Do you think

  743. that there weren't

  744. any Jewish discrimination

  745. and bigotry

  746. toward the Jewish people

  747. in the Roman Empire

  748. at this time?

  749. The Romans

  750. were a sinful bunch

  751. like the rest of us.

  752. I can assure you

  753. that all of those

  754. things happened.

  755. The Israelites

  756. were a conquered

  757. and oppressed people

  758. under Roman rule

  759. and yet

  760. Jesus came riding in

  761. on a donkey

  762. and spoke peace

  763. to the nations.

  764. Wait a minute,

  765. Jesus.

  766. You're supposed

  767. to crush

  768. our enemies

  769. not save them.

  770. Something's wrong

  771. with the picture here,

  772. Jesus.

  773. Where's the war horse?

  774. Where's the battle bone?

  775. Do you know

  776. what these people

  777. have done to us?

  778. 1 Peter 2, 19-25

  779. tell us that

  780. Jesus was reviled

  781. but did not revile

  782. in return.

  783. He suffered unjustly

  784. yet he did not threaten.

  785. Instead,

  786. he entrusted himself

  787. to God

  788. who judges justly.

  789. And it says

  790. that Christ

  791. suffered

  792. in this manner

  793. for us.

  794. Quote,

  795. leaving us

  796. an example

  797. so that we

  798. might follow

  799. in his steps.

  800. Do you know

  801. that the Bible

  802. commands us

  803. to suffer unjustly?

  804. As Christians,

  805. we say that

  806. we love

  807. Jesus' humility

  808. and his meekness

  809. that he is

  810. a suffering servant.

  811. But when I look around

  812. at how many Christians

  813. behave,

  814. it makes me wonder

  815. whether that's

  816. really true.

  817. Some Christians

  818. prefer to carry

  819. pitchforks

  820. rather than

  821. to carry the cross.

  822. I think many

  823. Christians nowadays

  824. want Jesus

  825. to look more like

  826. Che Guevara

  827. than a king

  828. riding on a donkey.

  829. a revolutionary

  830. to overthrow

  831. the establishment.

  832. They'd rather

  833. punish their enemies

  834. than suffer

  835. unjustly

  836. in their hands.

  837. They'd rather

  838. cancel their enemies

  839. than forgive

  840. their enemies.

  841. They'd rather

  842. slap back

  843. than turn

  844. the other cheek.

  845. But that is

  846. not the pattern

  847. that Jesus

  848. set for us.

  849. We serve

  850. King Jesus,

  851. the Prince

  852. of Peace.

  853. I'm not saying

  854. that we shouldn't

  855. seek institutional

  856. justice for the

  857. sake of others.

  858. That is a

  859. faithful application

  860. of the command

  861. to love our

  862. neighbor as

  863. ourselves.

  864. But when it

  865. comes to you,

  866. personally,

  867. do you seek

  868. justice for

  869. yourself?

  870. Or are you

  871. willing to take

  872. the path of

  873. humility and

  874. meekness and

  875. suffer unjustly?

  876. When your

  877. boss belittles

  878. you,

  879. when your

  880. neighbors

  881. mock you,

  882. when your

  883. friends offend

  884. you,

  885. are you willing

  886. to suffer like

  887. a lamb that

  888. is silent before

  889. its shearers?

  890. Or is your

  891. response,

  892. how dare you

  893. do this to

  894. me?

  895. I'll show

  896. you.

  897. I'm going to

  898. blast you on

  899. social media and

  900. make you sorry

  901. for what you

  902. did.

  903. If someone's

  904. committing a

  905. crime against

  906. you,

  907. that's one

  908. thing.

  909. Report it to

  910. the proper

  911. authority,

  912. sure.

  913. But when

  914. someone sins

  915. against you,

  916. and it's a

  917. choice between

  918. leaving justice

  919. in God's hands

  920. and taking it

  921. into your own

  922. hands,

  923. which would

  924. you choose?

  925. When we

  926. refuse to

  927. take justice

  928. into our

  929. own hands

  930. and entrust

  931. ourselves to

  932. God's ultimate

  933. justice,

  934. in doing that,

  935. we're honoring

  936. God.

  937. That's our

  938. vote of

  939. confidence.

  940. God,

  941. I trust you.

  942. God,

  943. I know that

  944. you are just.

  945. God,

  946. I know that

  947. I might suffer

  948. now,

  949. but that day

  950. is coming when

  951. you will come

  952. with perfect

  953. justice.

  954. And when we

  955. suffer in that

  956. way,

  957. we're imitating

  958. Jesus,

  959. our suffering

  960. Savior.

  961. And in doing

  962. that,

  963. we're pointing

  964. people to

  965. the good

  966. news of

  967. Jesus Christ,

  968. to the

  969. gospel.

  970. Look at

  971. my life.

  972. Look at

  973. my unjust

  974. suffering.

  975. Who does

  976. that remind

  977. you of?

  978. That's my

  979. Savior.

  980. If Jesus

  981. had come

  982. merely to

  983. execute justice

  984. in his

  985. first coming,

  986. he would

  987. have crushed

  988. the Romans,

  989. yes,

  990. but he would

  991. have also

  992. crushed every

  993. single one

  994. of the

  995. Israelites.

  996. Because they

  997. had all

  998. fallen short

  999. of his

  1000. glory.

  1001. Because they

  1002. had all

  1003. rebelled

  1004. against him.

  1005. I think we

  1006. missed this

  1007. point for

  1008. similar reasons

  1009. in our own

  1010. lives.

  1011. I think we're

  1012. sometimes too

  1013. eager to pick

  1014. up the

  1015. pitchforks for

  1016. this very

  1017. reason.

  1018. It's because

  1019. we're not

  1020. carrying the

  1021. cross.

  1022. We don't see

  1023. ourselves as

  1024. sinners at the

  1025. foot of the

  1026. cross.

  1027. Instead,

  1028. we're

  1029. self-righteous.

  1030. We think

  1031. we have

  1032. everything

  1033. figured out

  1034. and can

  1035. discern and

  1036. judge the

  1037. sins of

  1038. others with

  1039. perfect clarity.

  1040. We think

  1041. that sin is

  1042. more their

  1043. issue than

  1044. my issue.

  1045. But if we

  1046. followed in

  1047. the footsteps

  1048. of Jesus and

  1049. carried our

  1050. own cross,

  1051. then we'd be

  1052. more humble.

  1053. I think we'd

  1054. be quicker to

  1055. hear and slower

  1056. to speak.

  1057. I think we

  1058. would take the

  1059. logs out of

  1060. our own eyes

  1061. before we try

  1062. to remove the

  1063. specks from

  1064. our brothers and

  1065. sisters'

  1066. eyes.

  1067. Jesus came to

  1068. satisfy God's

  1069. justice on

  1070. the cross so

  1071. that he might

  1072. show us mercy,

  1073. so that he

  1074. might offer us

  1075. forgiveness.

  1076. To follow

  1077. King Jesus

  1078. is to follow

  1079. his path to

  1080. glory through

  1081. death.

  1082. And after

  1083. seeing the

  1084. crowd's reaction

  1085. to Jesus,

  1086. the Pharisees

  1087. are envious,

  1088. and they say

  1089. to one another

  1090. in verse 19,

  1091. you see that

  1092. you are gaining

  1093. nothing.

  1094. Look, the

  1095. world has

  1096. gone after

  1097. him.

  1098. And that

  1099. brings us to

  1100. the second

  1101. way that

  1102. Jesus appended

  1103. people's

  1104. expectations,

  1105. the king's

  1106. audience.

  1107. Jesus did

  1108. not come

  1109. only for

  1110. the Jews.

  1111. He came

  1112. for the

  1113. whole world.

  1114. The whole

  1115. world has

  1116. gone after

  1117. him.

  1118. The Pharisee

  1119. statement that

  1120. the world

  1121. has gone

  1122. after him

  1123. is even

  1124. truer than

  1125. they realize

  1126. in the

  1127. book of

  1128. John,

  1129. the word

  1130. world is

  1131. a key

  1132. word that

  1133. occurs again

  1134. and again.

  1135. It occurs

  1136. more frequently

  1137. in the

  1138. gospel of

  1139. John than

  1140. any other

  1141. book in

  1142. the New

  1143. Testament.

  1144. In fact,

  1145. it occurs

  1146. 78 times

  1147. in the

  1148. gospel of

  1149. John alone,

  1150. which is

  1151. more than

  1152. a third

  1153. of all the

  1154. occurrences

  1155. in the

  1156. New

  1157. Testament.

  1158. In fact,

  1159. it occurs

  1160. several times

  1161. in this

  1162. passage.

  1163. It says

  1164. again in

  1165. verses 31

  1166. and 32,

  1167. now is

  1168. the judgment

  1169. of this

  1170. world.

  1171. Now will

  1172. the ruler

  1173. of this

  1174. world be

  1175. cast out.

  1176. And I,

  1177. when I

  1178. am lifted

  1179. up from

  1180. the earth,

  1181. will draw

  1182. all people

  1183. to myself.

  1184. Similarly,

  1185. it said in

  1186. John 1

  1187. 29,

  1188. Jesus is

  1189. the Lamb

  1190. of God

  1191. who takes

  1192. away the

  1193. sin of

  1194. the world.

  1195. And most

  1196. famously in

  1197. John 3

  1198. 16,

  1199. God so

  1200. loved the

  1201. world that

  1202. he gave

  1203. his only

  1204. son that

  1205. whoever

  1206. believes in

  1207. him should

  1208. not perish

  1209. but have

  1210. eternal life.

  1211. It doesn't

  1212. mean that

  1213. God saves

  1214. the whole

  1215. world without

  1216. exception.

  1217. only those

  1218. who repent

  1219. and believe

  1220. in Jesus

  1221. will be

  1222. saved.

  1223. But it

  1224. does mean

  1225. that God

  1226. saves the

  1227. whole world

  1228. without

  1229. distinction.

  1230. Jesus is

  1231. the messianic

  1232. king,

  1233. not only

  1234. over the

  1235. Jews,

  1236. but over

  1237. all peoples,

  1238. over the

  1239. whole world.

  1240. He did

  1241. not come

  1242. to announce

  1243. judgment

  1244. of mere

  1245. Israel or

  1246. even of

  1247. the Roman

  1248. Empire only,

  1249. but the

  1250. judgment

  1251. of this

  1252. world.

  1253. He did

  1254. not come

  1255. to overthrow

  1256. a small

  1257. fry like

  1258. Caesar.

  1259. He came

  1260. to overthrow,

  1261. cast out the

  1262. ruler of

  1263. this entire

  1264. sinful world.

  1265. The title

  1266. ruler of

  1267. this world

  1268. occurs again

  1269. in John 14

  1270. 30 and

  1271. 1611 and

  1272. similar titles

  1273. are used

  1274. throughout the

  1275. New Testament

  1276. to refer to

  1277. Satan.

  1278. the true

  1279. king has

  1280. come and

  1281. Jesus'

  1282. glorification,

  1283. his enthronement

  1284. means Satan's

  1285. dethronement,

  1286. his overthrow.

  1287. Jesus'

  1288. coming into

  1289. his kingdom

  1290. means the

  1291. expulsion of

  1292. the ruler of

  1293. this world.

  1294. Don't ever

  1295. forget that

  1296. Jesus is

  1297. seated on

  1298. his throne

  1299. even right

  1300. now,

  1301. reigning at

  1302. the right

  1303. hand of

  1304. the Father.

  1305. We can get

  1306. worked up

  1307. and so

  1308. worried about

  1309. presidential

  1310. elections

  1311. and

  1312. geopolitics,

  1313. but the

  1314. ruler of

  1315. this world

  1316. has already

  1317. been cast

  1318. out.

  1319. And the

  1320. true king

  1321. is already

  1322. seated on

  1323. his throne.

  1324. Whether the

  1325. U.S.

  1326. or China

  1327. wins the

  1328. contest for

  1329. global

  1330. supremacy,

  1331. whether

  1332. Biden or

  1333. Trump

  1334. wins the

  1335. next

  1336. election,

  1337. Jesus is

  1338. still

  1339. king.

  1340. God has

  1341. not promised

  1342. to send

  1343. another

  1344. Messiah.

  1345. Jesus is

  1346. it.

  1347. He's the

  1348. one.

  1349. And no

  1350. matter who

  1351. your favorite

  1352. political

  1353. candidate is

  1354. or who

  1355. your

  1356. fantasy

  1357. Messiah

  1358. might be,

  1359. that person

  1360. is not

  1361. going to

  1362. save you.

  1363. Only

  1364. Jesus can

  1365. save you.

  1366. So be

  1367. watchful,

  1368. but not

  1369. fearful.

  1370. Be informed

  1371. and be

  1372. involved in

  1373. politics,

  1374. whatever degree

  1375. your vocation

  1376. calls for.

  1377. But don't

  1378. be consumed

  1379. by world

  1380. politics.

  1381. Jesus is

  1382. still

  1383. king.

  1384. And remember

  1385. also that

  1386. there is no

  1387. aspect of

  1388. your life

  1389. that's beyond

  1390. the reach

  1391. of Jesus'

  1392. rule.

  1393. If Jesus

  1394. rules over

  1395. the whole

  1396. world,

  1397. then you

  1398. cannot

  1399. confine or

  1400. compartmentalize

  1401. the scope

  1402. of his

  1403. authority.

  1404. His

  1405. sovereignty

  1406. is universal

  1407. and total.

  1408. 19th century

  1409. Dutch

  1410. theologian

  1411. and prime

  1412. minister,

  1413. Abraham

  1414. Kuyper,

  1415. once famously

  1416. said this,

  1417. there's not

  1418. a square

  1419. inch in

  1420. the whole

  1421. domain of

  1422. our human

  1423. existence

  1424. over which

  1425. Christ,

  1426. who is

  1427. sovereign

  1428. over all,

  1429. does not

  1430. cry,

  1431. mine.

  1432. Is

  1433. Jesus

  1434. king over

  1435. every domain

  1436. in your

  1437. life?

  1438. Not only

  1439. on Easter

  1440. and Christmas,

  1441. but over

  1442. 365 days

  1443. of your

  1444. life.

  1445. Not only

  1446. during

  1447. two hours

  1448. on Sunday

  1449. morning,

  1450. but 24

  1451. hours a

  1452. day of

  1453. your life.

  1454. Is

  1455. Jesus

  1456. Lord,

  1457. is

  1458. Jesus

  1459. king

  1460. in your

  1461. life?

  1462. In

  1463. every

  1464. square

  1465. inch

  1466. of your

  1467. finances,

  1468. every

  1469. square

  1470. inch

  1471. of your

  1472. speech,

  1473. every

  1474. square

  1475. inch

  1476. of how

  1477. you

  1478. work,

  1479. how

  1480. you

  1481. behave

  1482. when

  1483. no

  1484. one

  1485. is

  1486. looking,

  1487. is

  1488. Jesus

  1489. king

  1490. there?

  1491. Is

  1492. he

  1493. ruling

  1494. in

  1495. your

  1496. life?

  1497. The

  1498. reality

  1499. of

  1500. Jesus'

  1501. universal

  1502. rule

  1503. and

  1504. appeal

  1505. is

  1506. confirmed

  1507. immediately

  1508. by

  1509. verse

  1510. 20.

  1511. It says,

  1512. now among

  1513. those who

  1514. went up

  1515. to worship

  1516. at the

  1517. feast

  1518. were some

  1519. Greeks.

  1520. The Greeks

  1521. are not

  1522. people

  1523. necessarily

  1524. from

  1525. Greece,

  1526. but as

  1527. elsewhere

  1528. in the

  1529. New

  1530. Testament,

  1531. this is

  1532. the way

  1533. they refer

  1534. to

  1535. Gentiles,

  1536. all

  1537. non-Jews

  1538. who come

  1539. from

  1540. different

  1541. parts

  1542. of their

  1543. Greek

  1544. speaking

  1545. world.

  1546. So the

  1547. nations,

  1548. indeed,

  1549. the world

  1550. has begun

  1551. to come

  1552. to Jesus.

  1553. And they

  1554. reach out

  1555. to

  1556. Philip,

  1557. maybe because

  1558. he's from

  1559. the area

  1560. near the

  1561. Decapolis

  1562. where the

  1563. Gentiles

  1564. lived,

  1565. Bethsaida

  1566. in Galilee.

  1567. They

  1568. approach

  1569. Philip,

  1570. and then

  1571. Philip

  1572. approaches

  1573. Andrew,

  1574. and together

  1575. they tell

  1576. Jesus

  1577. about it.

  1578. And it's

  1579. the arrival

  1580. of the

  1581. Gentiles

  1582. that prompts

  1583. Jesus to

  1584. say this

  1585. in verse

  1586. 23,

  1587. the hour

  1588. has come

  1589. for the

  1590. Son of

  1591. Man to

  1592. be glorified.

  1593. Up to

  1594. this point

  1595. in the

  1596. Gospel of

  1597. John,

  1598. the hour

  1599. of his

  1600. glorification

  1601. has always

  1602. been future.

  1603. But now

  1604. the arrival

  1605. of Gentiles

  1606. has triggered

  1607. this hour

  1608. of Jesus'

  1609. glorification.

  1610. The appointed

  1611. hour,

  1612. the right

  1613. time,

  1614. has come.

  1615. Back then,

  1616. if you remember,

  1617. there was a

  1618. strict separation

  1619. between Jews

  1620. and Gentiles.

  1621. Gentiles could

  1622. not enter

  1623. into the

  1624. inner courtyard

  1625. of the

  1626. temple.

  1627. They had to

  1628. stay outside

  1629. in the

  1630. outer court.

  1631. If they

  1632. were to

  1633. transgress

  1634. that boundary,

  1635. they could

  1636. be killed.

  1637. It was on

  1638. pains of

  1639. death.

  1640. They were

  1641. threatened

  1642. to do

  1643. that.

  1644. But Jesus

  1645. came not

  1646. to save

  1647. the Jews

  1648. only,

  1649. but to

  1650. save all

  1651. nations,

  1652. to save

  1653. the whole

  1654. world,

  1655. in a sense.

  1656. That's why

  1657. it says

  1658. in verse

  1659. 32,

  1660. when Jesus

  1661. says,

  1662. when I'm

  1663. lifted up

  1664. from the

  1665. earth,

  1666. I will

  1667. draw all

  1668. people

  1669. to

  1670. myself.

  1671. Salvation

  1672. is from

  1673. the Jews

  1674. because Jesus

  1675. is a

  1676. Jewish

  1677. Messiah,

  1678. but salvation

  1679. is not

  1680. merely for

  1681. the Jews.

  1682. That's why

  1683. the Great

  1684. Commission

  1685. does not

  1686. say,

  1687. make

  1688. disciples

  1689. of your

  1690. tribal

  1691. group or

  1692. your ethnic

  1693. group.

  1694. It says,

  1695. make disciples

  1696. of all

  1697. nations.

  1698. That's why

  1699. Jesus promises

  1700. his followers

  1701. before his

  1702. ascension to

  1703. heaven in

  1704. Acts 1-8,

  1705. you will

  1706. receive power

  1707. when the

  1708. Holy Spirit

  1709. has come

  1710. upon you

  1711. and you

  1712. will be

  1713. my witnesses

  1714. in Jerusalem

  1715. and in all

  1716. Judea and

  1717. Samaria and

  1718. to the end

  1719. of the

  1720. earth,

  1721. meaning not

  1722. only to

  1723. the Jews

  1724. in Jerusalem

  1725. but also

  1726. to the

  1727. Samaritans

  1728. in Samaria

  1729. and also

  1730. to the

  1731. Gentiles

  1732. in the

  1733. ends

  1734. of the

  1735. earth.

  1736. So you

  1737. cannot

  1738. reject

  1739. Jesus

  1740. with this

  1741. excuse,

  1742. saying to

  1743. yourself,

  1744. well,

  1745. I'm not

  1746. a Jew,

  1747. so I

  1748. can't believe

  1749. in the

  1750. God of

  1751. the Bible.

  1752. Well,

  1753. my parents

  1754. are atheists,

  1755. so this

  1756. can't be

  1757. for me.

  1758. Well,

  1759. my country

  1760. is Muslim,

  1761. so I

  1762. can't be

  1763. a Christian.

  1764. My culture

  1765. is Hindu,

  1766. so I

  1767. can't be

  1768. a Christian.

  1769. My family

  1770. is Buddhist,

  1771. so I

  1772. can't be

  1773. a Christian.

  1774. You

  1775. can't have

  1776. those excuses

  1777. because

  1778. Christianity

  1779. is not

  1780. a Western

  1781. religion.

  1782. It's not

  1783. an American

  1784. export.

  1785. Jesus

  1786. rules over

  1787. the whole

  1788. world.

  1789. Christianity

  1790. is the

  1791. only

  1792. major

  1793. religion

  1794. in the

  1795. world

  1796. whose

  1797. founding

  1798. document,

  1799. the New

  1800. Testament,

  1801. was written

  1802. in the

  1803. language that

  1804. is not

  1805. the native

  1806. language of

  1807. the founder,

  1808. Jesus.

  1809. Jesus spoke

  1810. Aramaic.

  1811. The New

  1812. Testament is

  1813. written in

  1814. Greek.

  1815. Why?

  1816. Because

  1817. Jesus is

  1818. the Savior

  1819. of the

  1820. whole world,

  1821. not only

  1822. of the Jews

  1823. but of the

  1824. Greeks,

  1825. the Gentiles.

  1826. The Atlas

  1827. of Global

  1828. Christianity,

  1829. it's a book,

  1830. it's essentially

  1831. a book of

  1832. maps and

  1833. statistics and

  1834. diagrams related

  1835. to global

  1836. Christianity.

  1837. It chronicles

  1838. the shifts

  1839. in the

  1840. gravitational

  1841. center of

  1842. Christianity

  1843. from 30

  1844. A.D.

  1845. to the

  1846. present day.

  1847. The center

  1848. of gravity

  1849. for Christianity

  1850. was at

  1851. first,

  1852. of course,

  1853. in Jerusalem

  1854. around 30

  1855. A.D.

  1856. and then

  1857. it gradually

  1858. shifted north

  1859. and west

  1860. so that its

  1861. gravitational

  1862. center was

  1863. in

  1864. Constantinople,

  1865. which is

  1866. modern-day

  1867. Istanbul

  1868. in Turkey.

  1869. That was

  1870. around

  1871. 1000 A.D.

  1872. and then

  1873. by 1500

  1874. A.D.,

  1875. the gravitational

  1876. center

  1877. shifts

  1878. still further

  1879. north into

  1880. what is

  1881. Budapest,

  1882. Hungary,

  1883. and Vienna,

  1884. Austria.

  1885. By 1900 A.D.,

  1886. it shifted

  1887. further west

  1888. due in large

  1889. part to the

  1890. rise of the

  1891. United States

  1892. and the

  1893. gravitational

  1894. center was

  1895. Madrid,

  1896. Spain.

  1897. And then

  1898. since then,

  1899. the gravitational

  1900. center of

  1901. Christianity

  1902. has shifted

  1903. even more

  1904. southeast

  1905. rather than

  1906. northwest

  1907. so that it's

  1908. now in

  1909. Niger,

  1910. Africa,

  1911. and it's

  1912. expected to

  1913. continue its

  1914. shift southeast.

  1915. east.

  1916. That's

  1917. where the

  1918. center of

  1919. gravity for

  1920. Christians in

  1921. Christianity,

  1922. global Christianity

  1923. now is.

  1924. Let me ask you

  1925. some questions.

  1926. Do you know

  1927. where the

  1928. gravitational center

  1929. of Buddhism

  1930. is?

  1931. You probably

  1932. do.

  1933. It's

  1934. Southeast Asia.

  1935. It has

  1936. always been

  1937. Southeast Asia.

  1938. Do you know

  1939. where the

  1940. gravitational center

  1941. of Islam

  1942. is?

  1943. I bet you

  1944. do because

  1945. it's the

  1946. Middle East

  1947. Middle East.

  1948. Do you know

  1949. where the

  1950. gravitational center

  1951. of Hinduism

  1952. is?

  1953. Yes.

  1954. India.

  1955. And it

  1956. has always

  1957. been

  1958. India.

  1959. Christianity

  1960. is the

  1961. only world

  1962. religion

  1963. who has

  1964. truly one

  1965. adherence

  1966. from the

  1967. whole

  1968. world.

  1969. that has

  1970. shifted its

  1971. gravitational

  1972. center all

  1973. over the

  1974. world.

  1975. There is

  1976. no single

  1977. monolithic

  1978. Christian

  1979. civilization

  1980. or Christian

  1981. culture

  1982. because there

  1983. has already

  1984. been multiple

  1985. Christian

  1986. civilizations

  1987. and multiple

  1988. Christian

  1989. cultures.

  1990. Why?

  1991. Because King

  1992. Jesus is

  1993. king not

  1994. only over

  1995. Israel but

  1996. the whole

  1997. world.

  1998. Because he

  1999. came to

  2000. save the

  2001. world.

  2002. That's why

  2003. we cannot

  2004. say, oh,

  2005. we shouldn't

  2006. send

  2007. missionaries

  2008. out to

  2009. other

  2010. countries

  2011. and

  2012. cultures.

  2013. That's

  2014. so

  2015. colonial.

  2016. Or, oh,

  2017. I'm not

  2018. going to

  2019. share the

  2020. gospel with

  2021. my non-Christian

  2022. neighbors

  2023. because I

  2024. wouldn't want

  2025. to impose

  2026. my religion

  2027. on someone

  2028. else.

  2029. that is

  2030. politically

  2031. correct

  2032. nonsense.

  2033. It's

  2034. only

  2035. colonial

  2036. if the

  2037. territory

  2038. you

  2039. colonize

  2040. doesn't

  2041. already

  2042. belong to

  2043. your king.

  2044. But the

  2045. whole world

  2046. already

  2047. belongs to

  2048. Jesus.

  2049. He

  2050. already is

  2051. king over

  2052. the whole

  2053. world.

  2054. when the

  2055. rightful

  2056. king

  2057. takes

  2058. his

  2059. throne.

  2060. That's

  2061. not

  2062. colonialism.

  2063. That is

  2064. justice.

  2065. In

  2066. Matthew

  2067. 28,

  2068. 18 to

  2069. 20,

  2070. Jesus

  2071. says,

  2072. all authority

  2073. in heaven

  2074. and on

  2075. earth has

  2076. been given

  2077. to me.

  2078. Go

  2079. therefore

  2080. and make

  2081. disciples of

  2082. all

  2083. nations.

  2084. Why do we

  2085. go to

  2086. all nations?

  2087. Because

  2088. Jesus has

  2089. all

  2090. authority

  2091. in heaven

  2092. and on

  2093. earth.

  2094. When

  2095. did

  2096. King

  2097. Jesus

  2098. ever

  2099. get

  2100. tame

  2101. and

  2102. become

  2103. an

  2104. exclusive

  2105. feature

  2106. of

  2107. your

  2108. local

  2109. religion

  2110. and

  2111. culture?

  2112. That's

  2113. like saying,

  2114. oh,

  2115. I can't

  2116. expect my

  2117. neighbors

  2118. around me

  2119. to keep

  2120. the same

  2121. laws that

  2122. I keep.

  2123. I mean,

  2124. that'd be

  2125. so dogmatic.

  2126. I wouldn't

  2127. want to

  2128. impose my

  2129. personal

  2130. preferences

  2131. on them.

  2132. No.

  2133. All your

  2134. neighbors are

  2135. expected to

  2136. keep the

  2137. same laws

  2138. that you

  2139. keep because

  2140. they're under

  2141. the same

  2142. laws.

  2143. They're under

  2144. the same

  2145. president,

  2146. under the

  2147. same

  2148. Congress,

  2149. under the

  2150. same

  2151. Supreme

  2152. Court.

  2153. The rule

  2154. of the

  2155. land is

  2156. not your

  2157. personal

  2158. preference

  2159. or opinion.

  2160. Likewise,

  2161. if you

  2162. live in

  2163. this world,

  2164. if you

  2165. live in

  2166. any world,

  2167. you are

  2168. part of

  2169. King

  2170. Jesus'

  2171. domain,

  2172. whether you

  2173. like it

  2174. or not.

  2175. And

  2176. Jesus is

  2177. not just

  2178. your

  2179. king.

  2180. He is

  2181. their

  2182. rightful

  2183. king.

  2184. He is

  2185. king over

  2186. the whole

  2187. world.

  2188. So you

  2189. better let

  2190. them know

  2191. or they'll

  2192. be in

  2193. grave

  2194. trouble

  2195. because

  2196. those who

  2197. reject

  2198. Christ the

  2199. king stand

  2200. condemned

  2201. already under

  2202. the judgment

  2203. of God.

  2204. king

  2205. king.

  2206. King

  2207. Jesus

  2208. surprised

  2209. people

  2210. both in

  2211. his

  2212. agenda

  2213. and

  2214. his

  2215. audience.

  2216. But perhaps

  2217. the most

  2218. shocking

  2219. and unexpected

  2220. of all

  2221. is his

  2222. ascendance.

  2223. So the

  2224. hour of

  2225. Jesus'

  2226. glorification

  2227. is here.

  2228. The king

  2229. will finally

  2230. ascend to

  2231. his throne.

  2232. But what

  2233. exactly will

  2234. that ascendancy

  2235. look like?

  2236. Jesus gives

  2237. a hint in

  2238. verse 24,

  2239. Jesus continues

  2240. in verse 27,

  2241. now is my

  2242. soul troubled.

  2243. What shall I

  2244. say,

  2245. Father,

  2246. save me from

  2247. this hour?

  2248. But for this

  2249. purpose I've

  2250. come to this

  2251. hour.

  2252. The hour of

  2253. his glorification

  2254. is here,

  2255. but Jesus is

  2256. troubled.

  2257. It's not saying

  2258. he's excited,

  2259. he's troubled,

  2260. he's in anguish.

  2261. He feels a

  2262. deep revulsion

  2263. and anxiety.

  2264. Jesus wants

  2265. to cry out

  2266. to the

  2267. Father,

  2268. Father,

  2269. save me

  2270. from this

  2271. hour,

  2272. and yet

  2273. he decides

  2274. not to.

  2275. He steals

  2276. himself in

  2277. his resolve

  2278. to obey

  2279. his Father

  2280. to the end

  2281. because this

  2282. is the very

  2283. purpose for

  2284. which Jesus

  2285. came to

  2286. our world.

  2287. For Jesus,

  2288. the hour of

  2289. his glorification

  2290. is not about

  2291. his own glory,

  2292. but the glory

  2293. of his Father.

  2294. So he prays,

  2295. Father,

  2296. glorify your

  2297. name.

  2298. In spite

  2299. of his

  2300. anguish

  2301. and troubled

  2302. soul,

  2303. Jesus will

  2304. not ask

  2305. his Father

  2306. to spare

  2307. him from

  2308. the hour,

  2309. but he

  2310. will keep

  2311. steadfast

  2312. purpose,

  2313. and he

  2314. will be

  2315. glorified

  2316. through his

  2317. obedience,

  2318. through his

  2319. submission,

  2320. and through

  2321. his death.

  2322. For Jesus,

  2323. the hour

  2324. of glorification

  2325. is about

  2326. his death.

  2327. God

  2328. this is made

  2329. even clearer

  2330. in verses

  2331. 32 to 33.

  2332. And I,

  2333. when I am

  2334. lifted up

  2335. from the

  2336. earth,

  2337. I will

  2338. draw all

  2339. people to

  2340. myself.

  2341. Being lifted

  2342. up is a

  2343. good thing,

  2344. right?

  2345. People want

  2346. that.

  2347. They want

  2348. to be

  2349. exalted.

  2350. They want

  2351. to be

  2352. raised

  2353. higher

  2354. than others.

  2355. This is

  2356. Jesus'

  2357. long-awaited

  2358. ascendance,

  2359. but what

  2360. exactly does

  2361. that being

  2362. lifted up

  2363. look like?

  2364. Verse 33,

  2365. he said this

  2366. to show by

  2367. what kind

  2368. of death

  2369. he was

  2370. going to

  2371. die.

  2372. John is

  2373. fond of

  2374. using words

  2375. with double

  2376. meaning.

  2377. He's using

  2378. the word

  2379. lift up to

  2380. refer to

  2381. Jesus'

  2382. exaltation,

  2383. but he's

  2384. simultaneously

  2385. also referring

  2386. to Jesus

  2387. being physically

  2388. hoisted up

  2389. on a cross,

  2390. being lifted

  2391. up to die,

  2392. to be

  2393. tortured,

  2394. those two

  2395. things are

  2396. not opposed

  2397. to each

  2398. other.

  2399. They happen

  2400. simultaneously.

  2401. Jesus

  2402. doesn't get

  2403. exalted

  2404. because he

  2405. was crucified.

  2406. His

  2407. crucifixion

  2408. being lifted

  2409. up and

  2410. dying is

  2411. part of

  2412. the very

  2413. glory that

  2414. God has

  2415. given and

  2416. assigned to

  2417. him.

  2418. That's why

  2419. he speaks

  2420. of the grain

  2421. of wheat

  2422. falling to

  2423. the ground

  2424. and dying

  2425. only then

  2426. does it

  2427. bear much

  2428. fruit.

  2429. The death

  2430. of the grain

  2431. is the

  2432. first stage

  2433. of its

  2434. fruitfulness.

  2435. Likewise,

  2436. death of

  2437. Jesus Christ

  2438. is the

  2439. first stage

  2440. of his

  2441. glorification

  2442. which

  2443. culminates

  2444. in his

  2445. resurrection

  2446. and ascension

  2447. to the

  2448. right hand

  2449. of the

  2450. Father.

  2451. So there's

  2452. great irony

  2453. here in

  2454. the strange

  2455. glory of

  2456. our Savior.

  2457. The world

  2458. presumed that

  2459. it was

  2460. passing judgment

  2461. on Jesus,

  2462. debating his

  2463. identity and

  2464. sentencing

  2465. him to

  2466. execution.

  2467. But in

  2468. reality,

  2469. Jesus threw

  2470. his life

  2471. and death

  2472. past judgment

  2473. on the

  2474. world.

  2475. The ruler

  2476. of this

  2477. world,

  2478. Satan,

  2479. presumed that

  2480. he was

  2481. winning when

  2482. he led

  2483. Jesus to

  2484. be crucified.

  2485. But in

  2486. fact,

  2487. that happened

  2488. to be his

  2489. decisive blow,

  2490. his defeat.

  2491. Jesus chose

  2492. the glory of

  2493. the cross in

  2494. obedience to

  2495. God the

  2496. Father who

  2497. loved us

  2498. from before

  2499. the foundation

  2500. of the world

  2501. in order

  2502. to save

  2503. us.

  2504. Jesus could

  2505. have crushed

  2506. us,

  2507. his rebellious

  2508. subjects under

  2509. his feet

  2510. because we're

  2511. all unworthy

  2512. sinners,

  2513. because we have

  2514. all rebelled

  2515. against him.

  2516. Instead of

  2517. living for God

  2518. and for his

  2519. glory,

  2520. we've lived

  2521. for our

  2522. glory.

  2523. We've lived

  2524. for ourselves

  2525. and we've

  2526. served other

  2527. lords and

  2528. other gods.

  2529. We are

  2530. treasoners.

  2531. rebels.

  2532. But instead

  2533. of us,

  2534. Jesus was

  2535. pierced for

  2536. our transgression.

  2537. He was

  2538. crushed for

  2539. our iniquity

  2540. so that we

  2541. can be

  2542. forgiven,

  2543. so that we

  2544. can be

  2545. reconciled to

  2546. God the

  2547. Father,

  2548. so that we

  2549. can live.

  2550. Even while

  2551. Jesus was

  2552. here on

  2553. earth,

  2554. Jesus deserved

  2555. the most

  2556. lavish and

  2557. royal golden

  2558. throne that

  2559. human beings

  2560. could ever

  2561. design.

  2562. But instead,

  2563. his throne

  2564. was the

  2565. cross,

  2566. the ancient

  2567. equivalent of

  2568. the electric

  2569. chair.

  2570. Jesus

  2571. deserved to

  2572. wear the

  2573. most beautifully

  2574. bejeweled

  2575. crown that

  2576. has ever

  2577. graced a

  2578. man's head,

  2579. but instead

  2580. on his

  2581. precious head

  2582. sits the

  2583. crown of

  2584. thorns.

  2585. cross.

  2586. That was

  2587. his

  2588. inauguration

  2589. day,

  2590. his

  2591. crucifixion

  2592. day.

  2593. There were

  2594. no parades,

  2595. only a

  2596. trail of

  2597. tears,

  2598. mourners,

  2599. no champagne

  2600. bottles were

  2601. popped for

  2602. Jesus.

  2603. When Jesus

  2604. was thirsty,

  2605. hanging on the

  2606. cross and

  2607. dying for us,

  2608. someone gave

  2609. him a

  2610. sponge full

  2611. of vinegar,

  2612. sour wine.

  2613. There were

  2614. no adoring

  2615. crowds,

  2616. no rapturous

  2617. applause from

  2618. the crowds,

  2619. only a

  2620. hateful mob

  2621. that yelled

  2622. crucify,

  2623. crucify,

  2624. jeering,

  2625. mocking.

  2626. Brothers and

  2627. sisters,

  2628. Jesus did

  2629. not deserve

  2630. such a

  2631. shameful,

  2632. humiliating

  2633. death.

  2634. In fact,

  2635. as the

  2636. only sinless

  2637. man in

  2638. the history

  2639. of humankind,

  2640. he's the

  2641. only one

  2642. that deserved

  2643. to live,

  2644. to not

  2645. die.

  2646. But Jesus

  2647. died for

  2648. us.

  2649. He died

  2650. in our

  2651. place.

  2652. He died

  2653. for our

  2654. salvation.

  2655. That's the

  2656. kind of

  2657. king we

  2658. serve.

  2659. And

  2660. serving the

  2661. crucified

  2662. kings means

  2663. that we

  2664. also have

  2665. to choose

  2666. the glory

  2667. of the

  2668. cross

  2669. every day

  2670. of our

  2671. lives.

  2672. That's why

  2673. Jesus said

  2674. in verses

  2675. 25 to

  2676. 26,

  2677. whoever

  2678. loses

  2679. his life

  2680. loses,

  2681. loves his

  2682. life,

  2683. loses it.

  2684. Whoever

  2685. hates his

  2686. life in

  2687. this world

  2688. will keep

  2689. it for

  2690. eternal

  2691. life.

  2692. If

  2693. anyone

  2694. serves

  2695. me,

  2696. he must

  2697. follow

  2698. me.

  2699. And

  2700. where I

  2701. am,

  2702. there will

  2703. my servant

  2704. be also.

  2705. If

  2706. anyone

  2707. serves

  2708. me,

  2709. the

  2710. father

  2711. will

  2712. honor

  2713. him.

  2714. The

  2715. language

  2716. of

  2717. love

  2718. and

  2719. hate

  2720. here

  2721. is a

  2722. Jewish

  2723. idiom

  2724. that

  2725. expresses

  2726. choosing

  2727. something

  2728. over

  2729. another

  2730. thing.

  2731. So whoever

  2732. loves

  2733. his

  2734. own

  2735. life

  2736. over

  2737. loving

  2738. God

  2739. at the

  2740. expense

  2741. of

  2742. loving

  2743. God

  2744. will

  2745. lose

  2746. his

  2747. life

  2748. for

  2749. he

  2750. worships

  2751. himself

  2752. and

  2753. is

  2754. an

  2755. idolater.

  2756. But

  2757. whoever

  2758. loves

  2759. God

  2760. more

  2761. than

  2762. even

  2763. his

  2764. own

  2765. life

  2766. and

  2767. even

  2768. more

  2769. than

  2770. this

  2771. whole

  2772. world

  2773. will

  2774. keep

  2775. it

  2776. for

  2777. eternal

  2778. life.

  2779. The

  2780. glory

  2781. of

  2782. our

  2783. discipleship

  2784. lies

  2785. in

  2786. forsaking

  2787. our

  2788. own

  2789. glory

  2790. to

  2791. seek

  2792. the

  2793. glory

  2794. of

  2795. Christ

  2796. our

  2797. Savior.

  2798. That

  2799. is

  2800. the

  2801. spiritual

  2802. law

  2803. that

  2804. governs

  2805. the

  2806. whole

  2807. of

  2808. the

  2809. Christian

  2810. life.

  2811. So what

  2812. does that

  2813. mean

  2814. practically?

  2815. Our

  2816. path

  2817. to

  2818. glory

  2819. always

  2820. involves

  2821. carrying

  2822. the

  2823. cross.

  2824. It

  2825. goes

  2826. through

  2827. death.

  2828. when

  2829. you

  2830. give

  2831. up

  2832. your

  2833. worldly

  2834. selfish

  2835. ambitions

  2836. of

  2837. success

  2838. and

  2839. fame

  2840. and

  2841. fortune

  2842. in

  2843. order

  2844. to

  2845. obey

  2846. God

  2847. and

  2848. in

  2849. order

  2850. to

  2851. serve

  2852. your

  2853. loved

  2854. ones

  2855. it

  2856. very

  2857. well

  2858. might

  2859. feel

  2860. like

  2861. something

  2862. inside

  2863. you

  2864. is

  2865. dying.

  2866. But

  2867. that's

  2868. the

  2869. path

  2870. of

  2871. the

  2872. cross

  2873. that

  2874. Jesus

  2875. calls

  2876. us

  2877. to

  2878. follow

  2879. him

  2880. in.

  2881. When

  2882. you

  2883. give

  2884. up

  2885. your

  2886. desire

  2887. to

  2888. be

  2889. liked

  2890. by

  2891. everyone

  2892. and

  2893. avoid

  2894. trouble

  2895. and

  2896. then

  2897. you

  2898. actually

  2899. evangelize

  2900. even

  2901. if

  2902. that

  2903. brings

  2904. ridicule

  2905. and

  2906. ostracism

  2907. it

  2908. will

  2909. feel

  2910. like

  2911. a

  2912. kind

  2913. of

  2914. death

  2915. but

  2916. that

  2917. is

  2918. the

  2919. path

  2920. of

  2921. the

  2922. cross

  2923. that

  2924. Jesus

  2925. calls

  2926. us

  2927. to

  2928. follow

  2929. him

  2930. in.

  2931. When

  2932. someone

  2933. has

  2934. hurt

  2935. you

  2936. and

  2937. offended

  2938. you

  2939. and

  2940. instead

  2941. of

  2942. canceling

  2943. them

  2944. and

  2945. wishing

  2946. for

  2947. their

  2948. downfall

  2949. you

  2950. pray

  2951. for

  2952. them

  2953. you

  2954. forgive

  2955. them

  2956. and

  2957. you

  2958. seek

  2959. their

  2960. genuine

  2961. repentance

  2962. and

  2963. reconciliation

  2964. it

  2965. will

  2966. feel

  2967. like

  2968. a

  2969. kind

  2970. of

  2971. death

  2972. inside

  2973. but

  2974. that

  2975. is

  2976. the

  2977. path

  2978. of the

  2979. cross

  2980. that

  2981. Jesus

  2982. calls

  2983. us

  2984. to

  2985. follow

  2986. him

  2987. in.

  2988. in.

  2989. When

  2990. you

  2991. refuse

  2992. to

  2993. lie

  2994. and

  2995. manipulate

  2996. your

  2997. circumstances

  2998. and

  2999. the

  3000. peoples

  3001. around

  3002. you

  3003. to

  3004. get

  3005. what

  3006. you

  3007. want

  3008. and

  3009. advance

  3010. yourself

  3011. you

  3012. might

  3013. not

  3014. get

  3015. what

  3016. you

  3017. want

  3018. and

  3019. that

  3020. will

  3021. feel

  3022. like

  3023. death

  3024. but

  3025. that

  3026. is

  3027. the

  3028. path

  3029. of

  3030. the

  3031. cross

  3032. that

  3033. Jesus

  3034. calls

  3035. us

  3036. to

  3037. follow

  3038. him

  3039. in.

  3040. In

  3041. Philippians 2

  3042. 8-11

  3043. it says

  3044. that

  3045. Jesus

  3046. humbled

  3047. himself

  3048. by

  3049. becoming

  3050. obedient

  3051. to

  3052. death

  3053. even

  3054. death

  3055. on

  3056. a

  3057. cross

  3058. therefore

  3059. God

  3060. has

  3061. highly

  3062. exalted

  3063. him

  3064. and

  3065. bestowed

  3066. on

  3067. him

  3068. the

  3069. name

  3070. that

  3071. is

  3072. above

  3073. every

  3074. name

  3075. so

  3076. that

  3077. at

  3078. the

  3079. name

  3080. of

  3081. Jesus

  3082. every

  3083. knee

  3084. should

  3085. bow

  3086. in

  3087. heaven

  3088. and

  3089. on

  3090. earth

  3091. and

  3092. under

  3093. the

  3094. earth

  3095. and

  3096. every

  3097. tongue

  3098. confess

  3099. that

  3100. Jesus

  3101. Christ

  3102. is

  3103. Lord

  3104. to

  3105. the

  3106. glory

  3107. of

  3108. God

  3109. the

  3110. Father

  3111. do

  3112. you

  3113. want

  3114. true

  3115. lasting

  3116. glory

  3117. and

  3118. there's

  3119. only

  3120. one

  3121. path

  3122. it's

  3123. through

  3124. death

  3125. suffering

  3126. faithful

  3127. obedience

  3128. to

  3129. Jesus

  3130. on

  3131. on

  3132. to

  3133. death

  3134. only

  3135. the

  3136. grain

  3137. of

  3138. wheat

  3139. that

  3140. falls

  3141. to

  3142. the

  3143. ground

  3144. and

  3145. dies

  3146. bears

  3147. fruit

  3148. the

  3149. glory

  3150. of

  3151. the

  3152. cross

  3153. is

  3154. waiting

  3155. for

  3156. you

  3157. remember

  3158. that

  3159. Jesus

  3160. never

  3161. asks

  3162. you

  3163. to

  3164. follow

  3165. him

  3166. where

  3167. he

  3168. hasn't

  3169. already

  3170. gone

  3171. before

  3172. you

  3173. to

  3174. follow

  3175. King

  3176. Jesus

  3177. is to

  3178. follow

  3179. his

  3180. path

  3181. to

  3182. glory

  3183. through

  3184. death

  3185. let's

  3186. pray

  3187. together

  3188. father we

  3189. confess

  3190. when we

  3191. are reminded

  3192. of

  3193. precious

  3194. truths

  3195. like this

  3196. that

  3197. that we

  3198. become so

  3199. worldly

  3200. forgive

  3201. us

  3202. Lord

  3203. Jesus

  3204. we

  3205. seek

  3206. the

  3207. glory

  3208. of

  3209. the

  3210. cross

  3211. we

  3212. want

  3213. the

  3214. glory

  3215. that

  3216. comes

  3217. from

  3218. God

  3219. and

  3220. not

  3221. the

  3222. glory

  3223. that

  3224. comes

  3225. from

  3226. man

  3227. so

  3228. help

  3229. us

  3230. by

  3231. the

  3232. power

  3233. of

  3234. your

  3235. spirit

  3236. to

  3237. pursue

  3238. this

  3239. path

  3240. of

  3241. obedience

  3242. of

  3243. death

  3244. and

  3245. suffering

  3246. so

  3247. we

  3248. might

  3249. share

  3250. in

  3251. your

  3252. glory

  3253. Lord

  3254. Jesus

  3255. in

  3256. your

  3257. precious

  3258. name

  3259. Jesus

  3260. we

  3261. pray

  3262. amen

  3263. said

  3264. 62

  3265. N

  3266. to

  3267. pray

  3268. love
