  1. in our series,

  2. the major Bible doctrines.

  3. This morning, we're going to focus on

  4. the power of the spirit,

  5. the Holy Spirit, and the power of the

  6. gospel.

  7. So, we're going to look at the verse in

  8. Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  9. kind of get us kicked off and going

  10. here.

  11. Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  12. Remember, this was one of the the

  13. questions the apostles had about John's

  14. baptism.

  15. And

  16. Jesus said there's one coming after him.

  17. And he was he was mentioning the member

  18. of the Trinity, member of the Godhead,

  19. the Holy Spirit

  20. would come.

  21. In the Old Testament, we seen that

  22. there were limited times that that

  23. happened. Limited times that

  24. the spirit came

  25. upon men, although it was there.

  26. But here, this is on everyone,

  27. not just the apostles, but every member

  28. of the church

  29. will participate in this.

  30. And this is a promise. We want to remind

  31. oursel of that. Another promise from

  32. God, the promise of the spirit.

  33. In verse eight here, he says, "But you

  34. shall receive power

  35. after the Holy Spirit is come upon you,

  36. and you will be witnesses of me both in

  37. J in Jerusalem, in Judea, in Samaria,

  38. and to the uttermost part of the earth."

  39. And those are words directly from Jesus

  40. about the third member of the Trinity

  41. that he mentioned as well in the in the

  42. upper room. Now, let's put that with

  43. Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  44. As we begin this morning,

  45. we have the power of the Holy Spirit and

  46. Paul talks about the power of the gospel

  47. here in Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  48. in verse 16. same word

  49. the power the spirit the Holy Spirit was

  50. going to come and bring him power and

  51. here Paul says the power is in the

  52. gospel of God to salvation verse 16

  53. I am not ashamed of the gospel

  54. there's a lot of shame that comes with

  55. it a lot of people don't want to deal

  56. with that they want to Jesus that you

  57. know is makes everybody comfortable and

  58. cold

  59. but Paul says said that he was not

  60. ashamed of the gospel of Christ

  61. crucified savior for us to to die and to

  62. pay for our sins.

  63. And he says that I am not ashamed of the

  64. gospel of Christ. For it is the power of

  65. God unto salvation to everyone that

  66. believes to the Jew first and also to

  67. the Greek. For in it is the

  68. righteousness of God revealed from faith

  69. to faith. As it is written, the just

  70. shall live by faith. So, we have the

  71. power of the Holy Spirit and we have the

  72. power of the gospel. And and these two

  73. go together for us here as we begin. And

  74. remember that's uh

  75. you know that's what Jesus told us was

  76. going to happen. Um he was going to send

  77. the Holy Spirit, the spirit of God. And

  78. the Holy Spirit is a member of the

  79. Trinity as we've been learning and have

  80. learned and have known

  81. part of our Bible uh from the very first

  82. verses. And we saw that back in Genesis

  83. remember the spirit breathed into Adam

  84. and Adam became a living soul. So we

  85. have examples in the Bible where the

  86. spirit did something and in there that

  87. that case he breathed into Adam and Adam

  88. became a living soul.

  89. So the the holy spirit represents you

  90. know there there are words in our bible

  91. that

  92. um the authors and the writers of the

  93. bible use to help us understand more

  94. about the holy spirit. One of them is

  95. fire. the Holy Spirit of fire he came.

  96. That's what we see the symbol on the day

  97. of Pentecost. And when we see that

  98. symbol in the Old Testament as the

  99. holiness of God so fire in the Holy

  100. Spirit represents uh purification.

  101. Uh we saw uh the oil of the Holy Spirit

  102. in the Old Testament what that

  103. represented anointing.

  104. We've seen the dove come on upon Jesus

  105. in the New Testament.

  106. That means purity and peace and humility

  107. and longsuffering.

  108. And then we seen in John chapter 3 about

    John 3 chapter mention

  109. the wind and the breath representing the

  110. power of God. Let's turn to that verse

  111. in John

    John 3 chapter mention

  112. chapter 3.

  113. And remember at the end of John we have

  114. the one where it says Jesus breathed on

  115. them

  116. and it said receive ye the spirit. So

  117. there the breath of Jesus and the spirit

  118. of God went together.

  119. So we have those comparisons in the word

  120. of God. And here we're going to revisit

  121. this. We've been to this verse before

  122. but we're going to come back to it a

  123. second and look at it in a little bit uh

  124. greater depth. And he he says here in

  125. verse uh six of John chapter 3, he that

    John 3 chapter mention

  126. is born of the flesh is flesh. That

  127. which is born of the spirit is spirit.

  128. So the birth here, the new birth is

  129. brought about by the holy spirit. And

  130. Jesus himself compares the spirit to the

  131. wind here.

  132. He says, "Marvel not that I say you must

  133. be born again. The wind blows where it

  134. wills."

  135. So the wind is very sovereign, you know,

  136. it uh we were we were

  137. had a picnic, I guess, yesterday, right?

  138. And the wind came out of the north and

  139. blowed all the plates off the the table

  140. when the rain hit. So we ran and

  141. gathered them all up and I was

  142. surrounded by croutons.

  143. So we got everything cleaned up and we

  144. got then the wind was coming this way

  145. and then no sooner we got everything

  146. clean cleaned up. The wind started

  147. blowing from this direction. What a

  148. great example of what Jesus is saying

  149. here. We don't know which way the wind's

  150. going to come and the wind has the the

  151. freedom and to do whatever it wants.

  152. And that's what Jesus says. the

  153. sovereignty here of the of the wind and

  154. the sovereignty of the Holy Spirit.

  155. And uh he again he says you don't know

  156. the sound of it or you don't know the

  157. voice of it. That's uh you know the the

  158. the wind here

  159. um is compared to the Holy Spirit and

  160. the spirit here is indeed a member of

  161. the Godhead. So you know the the Bible

  162. never calls the wind God.

  163. The Bible never calls the sun God.

  164. You know, God's above the wind and he's

  165. greater than the wind. But Jesus is

  166. simply saying here that, you know, we

  167. can't even predict the weather. It was

  168. 85 yesterday and I think the wind chill

  169. this morning was was maybe 35. What a

  170. change. And and uh you know that's what

  171. he's saying. The wind can do whatever it

  172. wants. The weather can do whatever it

  173. wants. And we just have to observe

  174. and and agree with Jesus here and that

  175. uh it comes from wherever it wants to

  176. and it goes wherever it wants to. And

  177. then he says so is everyone that is born

  178. of the spirit. So the power of the holy

  179. spirit here

  180. uh with Jesus along with the power of

  181. the gospel to make men be born again.

  182. That's uh what this whole chapter is

  183. about here.

  184. Um, as we look at this and begin and the

  185. word sound up there, it means voice, you

  186. know, and and the wind has a voice,

  187. doesn't it? If it blows hard enough, you

  188. know, we can hear the voice of the wind

  189. and and uh the spirit has a voice. And

  190. the voice, the spirit's voice is the

  191. word of God. It's the gospel that Paul

  192. talked about. So, we have the Holy

  193. Spirit and we have the gospel as the

  194. power of God unto salvation

  195. to everyone that believeth. And you

  196. know, again, we don't know which way the

  197. wind's going to go. And it's invisible.

  198. It's it's mighty. Uh there's a lot of

  199. comparisons we can make with the wind

  200. here with the Holy Spirit. And I think

  201. that was the whole point of verse 8 here

  202. with Jesus and and the spirit uh to

  203. Nicodemus which he didn't have and which

  204. he needed. Let's turn to Job chapter 4.

    Job 4 chapter mention

  205. Job

    Job 4 chapter mention

  206. chapter 4

  207. and verse 14.

  208. Job 4

  209. and verse 14.

  210. This was a long time ago, the oldest

  211. book in the Bible. And there are things

  212. here that

  213. let us know that the word of God is in

  214. is inspired

  215. in a great way. And here uh we have in

  216. chapter 4 of the book of Job about the

  217. spirit of God. Start in verse 14. He

  218. says, "Fear came upon me and trembling

  219. which made all of my bones to shake.

  220. Then the spirit passed by before my

  221. face. The hair of my flesh stood up. It

  222. stood up still, but I could not discern

  223. its form, its image before my eyes.

  224. Therefore, I was silent, and I heard a

  225. voice saying, "Shall mortal man

  226. be more just than God? Shall a man be

  227. more pure than his maker?

  228. Behold, he put no trust in his servants,

  229. and in his angels he charged with folly.

  230. How much less is it in them that dwell

  231. in houses of clay, whose foundation are

  232. dust, who crushes before the moth?" So

  233. Job compares himself here to God to the

  234. spirit of God and and uh we see that he

  235. he trembled when he thinks about God

  236. compared to himself. So

  237. you know we have a

  238. you know we're Christians are now filled

  239. with his spirit

  240. that Job is talking about here. So and

  241. again this is before the incarnation.

  242. So we see him work and and we see him

  243. produce

  244. results here. Turn over to Ezekiel

  245. 37

  246. to the valley of dry bones.

  247. When I first got saved, I read this over

  248. and over wondering what this meant.

  249. for 35 years now

  250. we have some clarity what we have here

  251. in Ezekiel chapter 37

    Ezekiel 37 chapter mention

  252. and verse 8.

  253. Ezekiel

  254. 37

  255. and verse 8

  256. talking about the spirit of God as the

  257. wind

  258. bringing about results

  259. bringing about change.

  260. And here we have

  261. Ezekiel the prophet's vision

  262. and it's just a valley of dry bones.

  263. I'll start in verse eight.

  264. And when I beheld, lo, the shenus,

  265. there's a good King James word.

  266. And the flesh came upon them, and the

  267. skin covered them above, but there was

  268. no breath in them. And then he said unto

  269. me, prophesy unto the wind. Prophesy,

  270. son of man, and say to the wind, thus

  271. sayeth the Lord God, come from the four

  272. winds and breasts of the earth upon

  273. these slain, and make them live.

  274. So I prophesied, as I was commanded, and

  275. the breath came into them, and they

  276. lived, and they stood upon their feet.

  277. They were exceedingly great army. So we

  278. see, you know, the humanly speaking,

  279. uh, a death and destruction is about as

  280. bad as it can get. Um, look up in verse

  281. two

  282. some more to help us with what exactly

  283. this was. And caused me to pass by them

  284. round about them. And behold, there were

  285. very many in open valley, and lo, they

  286. were very dry. There's a lots of them,

  287. and they're very dry. in

  288. >> I'm sorry. Yes.

  289. Ezekiel 37.

  290. Is am I on track?

  291. >> Yeah.

  292. >> So, this is the valley of dry bones and

  293. and Ezekiel sees how bad it is and

  294. humanly speaking and the wind of God,

  295. the breath of God comes in and brings

  296. life. So the Old Testament is telling us

  297. something that the spirit brings life

  298. and and it can bring life to to uh dead

  299. bones as many as there were here such a

  300. pile if you will. So how did they stand

  301. up?

  302. Everyone stood up by the breath of God.

  303. So

  304. turn over to John chapter nine.

  305. We have so many

  306. good examples in John about

  307. exactly what Jesus said.

  308. He said to the apostles, "You're going

  309. to preach my word. The Holy Spirit's

  310. going to come and you're going to do

  311. greater works than I did."

  312. And we see accounts of that here in John

  313. where

  314. this new birth that he told Nicodemus

  315. about this blind man

  316. um

  317. lays hold of of who Christ is and and

  318. and he's born again.

  319. So here in chapter one or excuse me

  320. verse one of chapter nine John

  321. as Jesus passed by

  322. he saw a man who was blind from his

  323. birth. His disciples said master who did

  324. sin this man or his parents that he was

  325. born blind.

  326. Jesus said neither this man sin nor his

  327. parents but that the works of God should

  328. be made manifest in him. That's what the

  329. new birth is. It's a work of God.

  330. You know, as God breathed in, the spirit

  331. breathed into those dry bones in the Old

  332. Testament to bring and give life. So,

  333. the spirit of God, the breath of God,

  334. the voice of God, the word of God

  335. um is able to do that in the New

  336. Testament here to the worst of sinners

  337. who this blind man was treated like. And

  338. Jesus said, "I must work the works of

  339. him that sent me." So those are the

  340. works that he's talking about is is

  341. bringing the new birth, bringing life to

  342. people. And as long as I am in the

  343. world, I am the light of the world.

  344. So you know, that's what Jesus is. He's

  345. the light of the world. He's the one

  346. that shines in the darkness for us.

  347. You will go over to verse 36.

  348. This whole chapter is about this very

  349. thing. John gives us so many examples of

  350. the new birth after Jesus says you got

  351. to be born again. Well, how's that?

  352. Well, John says boom, boom, boom, boom,

  353. boom. Chapter after chapter,

  354. he shows us what the new birth is and

  355. how the preaching of Jesus and the words

  356. of Jesus along with the Holy Spirit

  357. moving brought about faith in the son of

  358. God.

  359. And that's what he says up here in verse

  360. 36. And he answered, "Who is he, Lord,

  361. that I might believe on him?" That's

  362. what this is all about.

  363. Jesus believing on Jesus, who he is, and

  364. what he said he's done.

  365. And Jesus said, "Thou has not seen him.

  366. Thou has both seen him, and it is he

  367. that talks with thee." And he said,

  368. "Lord, I believe." And he worshiped him.

  369. And Jesus said, "For judgment I have

  370. come into the world that they who see

  371. not might see, but they who see might be

  372. made blind." There's some more of that

  373. sovereignty

  374. where the wind blows,

  375. as he said back there in chapter three,

  376. wherever it will. So

  377. God is sovereign where the word of God

  378. and the spirit of God and the truth of

  379. God and the salvation of God forth. God

  380. is sovereign in these things. And Jesus

  381. said, "If you were blind, uh, you should

  382. have no sin, but now you have said we,

  383. therefore, your sin remains." So in the

  384. example here, and again, the woman at

  385. the well, he's, you know, Jesus told her

  386. about the living water and that's what

  387. he gives. That's what the word of God

  388. is. That's what the words of Jesus are.

  389. They're the living word of God.

  390. Now turn to the book of Acts again.

  391. Acts chapter

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  392. 1.

  393. We're back to our verse

  394. again.

  395. So, you know, that's what

  396. teachers and preachers know

  397. is that if you want to fill

  398. a building or a funeral home or a church

  399. uh with the Holy Spirit,

  400. you can do it with the word of God and

  401. the spirit of God. And we've seen that.

  402. We've seen Jesus do that. We've seen the

  403. the valley of dry bones. And now this

  404. spirit is the one Jesus is talking about

  405. here coming in verse 8. Um and and this

  406. is where the preaching of the gospel of

  407. grace

  408. begins.

  409. And you know these men spent years with

  410. Jesus three and a half years but yet

  411. they didn't fully understand all this.

  412. you know, their, you know, their faith

  413. was, you know, denial not too long ago,

  414. but now Jesus has restored them and he

  415. wants them to go forward. And, you know,

  416. he, the Holy Spirit is coming upon these

  417. men, and we're going to see what happens

  418. when the Holy Spirit comes. Many people

  419. get sidetracked here with the all the

  420. gifts and everything in these early

  421. chapters. We'll come back to this in a

  422. future message and deal with the gifts

  423. collectively. But now turn to chapter 6

  424. and verse 10.

  425. We're talking about the spirit,

  426. power of the spirit and the power of the

  427. gospel.

  428. And we see it here in our dear friend

  429. Stephen.

  430. We're going to get to meet him. He's in

  431. heaven. And here we have a a good

  432. example of what

  433. Jesus was talking about when he, you

  434. know, he said, "They're going to

  435. persecute you like they persecuted me."

  436. And here in chapter 6 in verse 10,

  437. the spirit of God, the Holy Spirit and

  438. the the gospel that Paul preached is uh

  439. is the power of God. Those things are

  440. able.

  441. They have a great ability.

  442. And here in verse 10, they were not able

  443. to resist the wisdom and the spirit by

  444. which he spoke. And this is Stephen,

  445. remember?

  446. And this is exactly what Jesus told them

  447. was going to happen when the Holy Spirit

  448. would come. And you guys, he said, you

  449. will be not just the men, but the women.

  450. you're going to be uh witnesses for me

  451. uh wherever you go. So the verb in this

  452. the verb in this verse here in chapter 6

  453. and verse 10 the the verb here greatly

  454. highlights the divine wisdom given to

  455. Stephen.

  456. Everybody Stephen got up and he was

  457. talking and everybody was like man where

  458. did that message come from? you know

  459. what it come from heaven. They come from

  460. God and his wisdom and it came through

  461. the spirit of God and it come out

  462. Steven's mouth uh to these stubborn men.

  463. Here it is. It says and you know they

  464. they uh they did to him what they did to

  465. Jesus. They raised up false witnesses.

  466. See in verse 13, same thing. These were

  467. paid liars, you know. They just brought

  468. him in and they they you know for a fee

  469. you could get a conviction and that's

  470. exactly what happened and they end up

  471. stoning Stephen here. Well, we're before

  472. we get to that back up to chapter 2,

  473. Acts

  474. 2

  475. and 17.

  476. And it and it wasn't just Stephen,

  477. you know, he wasn't one of the 12. It

  478. wasn't just Peter who was one of the 12.

  479. It was it was the men and the women in

  480. the church that God poured his wisdom

  481. out on in the early church here so we

  482. could have these things recorded for us

  483. and read them and see what happened. And

  484. then it come to pass in the last days in

  485. verse 17

  486. says God I will pour out my spirit upon

  487. all flesh.

  488. So

  489. they go to the Old Testament remind

  490. everybody about this verse

  491. and you know we've seen this a couple of

  492. times but then verse eight and your sons

  493. and your daughters will prophesy.

  494. That's what Stephen was doing.

  495. You know, when they said, "This man's

  496. got wisdom from on high." He's he's

  497. prophesying with the wisdom that God

  498. gave him

  499. and the Holy Spirit gave him. And you'll

  500. see visions and old men will dream

  501. dreams.

  502. And on my servants and on my handmaids,

  503. I will pour out in those days the spirit

  504. and they shall prophesy. And the point

  505. there is that everyone, you know,

  506. everyone who the moment they're born

  507. again

  508. receives the Holy Spirit,

  509. whether they're four year old child or a

  510. 40year-old

  511. adult or an 80year-old adult, it doesn't

  512. matter. The spirit comes when when the

  513. regeneration comes as well. I'll turn to

  514. chapter 7.

  515. Nobody was asking for the spirit.

  516. We'll deal with that in a future

  517. message. But God poured it out and and

  518. we see the evidence of it here.

  519. The greater than John, they were

  520. baptized with the greater greater than

  521. water. They were baptized with the

  522. spirit of the Holy Spirit of God. And

  523. here we're talking about Stephen again

  524. in verse seven.

  525. And you know, notice his message. And he

  526. said uh to the high priest, "Are these

  527. things so?"

  528. And he said, "Men and brethren and

  529. fathers, hearken to God of glory."

  530. That's who Steven's talking about, the

  531. God of glory from the Old Testament.

  532. This is this is the election in the Old

  533. Testament to the Jews. You know, you

  534. guys had the word of God. You guys have

  535. the privileges. You guys know God. And

  536. you know God because he chose you.

  537. and um they didn't want to hear these

  538. things. So he goes on there to talk

  539. about verse 5. He says, "And he gave him

  540. no inheritance, not so much as to set

  541. foot. Yet he promised that he would give

  542. it to him for a possession and his seed

  543. after him when he had no child." And God

  544. spoke in this way. So you see Stephen is

  545. speaking the word of God. He's speaking

  546. the truth of God that the Holy Spirit

  547. has given him here in a great way.

  548. And uh he says you'll be a stranger in

  549. the land. He he he notes the dates. And

  550. then he says in verse 7, the nation to

  551. whom they shall be will be in bondage

  552. and I will judge says God and after that

  553. they will come forth and serve me in

  554. this place. So God uh is who Stephen is

  555. talking about here with them. And this

  556. wisdom come from a come from the Holy

  557. Spirit and come from above. That's what

  558. chapter 6 is all about here. And then

  559. look in verse three of chapter 6.

  560. Back up and pick up a couple more verses

  561. here about Stephen and his wisdom.

  562. Therefore, wherefore, brethren, look

  563. among you for seven honest men, full of

  564. the Holy Spirit and wisdom, that we may

  565. appoint over this business, that we

  566. might be given

  567. ourselves continually to prayer and to

  568. the ministry of the word, you know. So,

  569. we can't overlook that, you know, along

  570. with the wisdom and the and the

  571. preaching and the teaching was the

  572. prayer and the ministry of the word.

  573. And the saying pleased the whole

  574. multitude, they chose Stephen,

  575. a man full of faith and of the Holy

  576. Spirit. So that was the man they put

  577. forth. And we see here what what

  578. transpired

  579. before the Sanhedrin when he spoke uh to

  580. them as well. And it didn't go so well.

  581. And then look what

  582. um the verse says in chapter

  583. 7 verse 48.

  584. He's summing it up here.

  585. Quite a quite a message that he

  586. preached.

  587. Where do you get it?

  588. It came from heaven above. It come from

  589. the Holy Spirit that was in him.

  590. And it

  591. was met with great opposition. In verse

  592. 48 of chapter 7, he says, "Nevertheless,

  593. the most high dwells not in temples made

  594. with hands,

  595. as the prophets say."

  596. And God says, "Heaven is my throne, the

  597. earth is my foottool. What house will

  598. you build me, sayaeth the Lord, and what

  599. place will you give me of rest?

  600. Has not my handmade all things?"

  601. So after that message, you see the stiff

  602. neck of the uncircumcised in heart.

  603. You're resisting who? The Holy Spirit

  604. as your fathers also did. So the wisdom

  605. of God and the spirit of God and the

  606. truth of God, these all all these things

  607. go together here and a great example for

  608. us in the early church.

  609. and one verse 40 54. And when they heard

  610. these things, they were cut to the

  611. heart.

  612. They nashed on him with their teeth.

  613. And he being full of the Holy Spirit, he

  614. looked up steadfastly to heaven, and he

  615. saw the glory of God and Jesus standing

  616. on the right hand of God. So we have the

  617. the Trinity showing up here

  618. in this one of these first examples in

  619. the early church.

  620. Behold, he saw heaven open and the son

  621. of of man standing on the right hand of

  622. God.

  623. And they cried with a loud voice, and

  624. they stopped their ears, and they ran

  625. unto him with one accord. And they cast

  626. him out of the city, and they stoned

  627. him. And the witnesses laid down their

  628. clothes of the young man's feet, whose

  629. name was Saul.

  630. And they stoned Steven, calling upon God

  631. and saying,

  632. uh, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. He

  633. knelt down with a loud voice, Lord, lay

  634. not to their charge like his savior did.

  635. And when he said these things, he fell

  636. asleep. So, we've got the all three

  637. members of the Trinity involved in the

  638. early church here for us to see the

  639. power of the Holy Spirit, the power of

  640. the word of God, the power of the

  641. gospel. Uh these are great examples. And

  642. the Bible also calls these men, go back

  643. to chapter 4,

  644. ignorant.

  645. They were ignorant in in worldly

  646. knowledge. They were ignorant in maybe

  647. their culture. They were ignorant in a

  648. lot of things.

  649. But look what it says at the end of

  650. verse 13.

  651. They took knowledge of them that they

  652. had been with Jesus. So that that's

  653. where the power for them was at was that

  654. they had been with Jesus and his word

  655. and the Holy Spirit in which that he had

  656. promised to them. And then it happened

  657. with Peter. Look there in verse 8 of

  658. chapter 4. Then Peter filled with the

  659. Holy Spirit said, "You rulers of

  660. Israel." So there was the boldness to to

  661. speak and with the wisdom um on high. So

  662. that's the way God works. God works

  663. through his spirit and God works through

  664. his word and God works through his

  665. church, his preachers. and you know the

  666. the ones that were praying as well. We

  667. saw that. So here this the the

  668. wind that Jesus called back there in

  669. John chapter 3. The wind blows where it

    John 3 chapter mention

  670. wills. The sovereignty of the of the

  671. spirit. We see here uh in these early

  672. chapters in the book of Acts.

  673. And if you will look in verse

  674. um oh we looked at that one. Go to 1

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  675. Corinthians chapter 3.

  676. You would have to be God to be in

  677. everybody at once, wouldn't you?

  678. So that's what we have. We have everyone

  679. who has been born again has the Holy

  680. Spirit dwelling within them.

  681. It's a gift. It's a part of this great

  682. salvation and redemption that we have.

  683. And here Paul tells, he reminds the

  684. Corinthians here in chapter 3:16,

  685. a verse you know so well. But as a

  686. reminder,

  687. you know, the sin and everything that

  688. they were wrapped up in,

  689. you know, before Paul starts talking

  690. about the doctrines and the and the

  691. issues, he tells them that they have the

  692. spirit of God in them.

  693. Here in verse

  694. 16, know you not that you are the temple

  695. of God, and the spirit of God dwells in

  696. you.

  697. If any man defile the temple of God,

  698. him shall God destroy. For the temple of

  699. God is holy, which temple you are. So

  700. God, he's committed to uh us changing

  701. into the image of his son. He's

  702. committed to it. He's didn't take the

  703. Holy Spirit from the Corinthians because

  704. of their sin. No, he left them there to

  705. do his work. And what is his work? We'll

  706. turn over to chapter six.

  707. Well, let's read chapter 4 verse 20 on

  708. the way over. Chapter 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  709. chapter 4 and verse 20. He says, "For

  710. the kingdom of God is not in word but in

  711. power."

  712. Power of the spirit. So, we need the

  713. spirit of God

  714. and the word of God. That's the

  715. sanctifying

  716. uh that Jesus spoke of about the word of

  717. God going forth. And here in 1

  718. Corinthians chap 6 and verse

  719. 11,

  720. these sinful Corinthians that Paul just

  721. reminded that they had the spirit of God

  722. in them. He says, "And such were some of

  723. you, but you are washed and you are

  724. sanctified

  725. and you are justified in the name of the

  726. Lord Jesus." How all that happened? By

  727. the spirit of our God. So the spirit of

  728. God brings the new birth and and

  729. justification. And not only that, he

  730. doesn't leave us. He keeps working to

  731. bring about our sanctification

  732. and ultimately our glorification.

  733. You know, that's what God, he's

  734. committed to to saving us. Turn over to

  735. chapter 12. And here Paul tells them

  736. about the sovereignty of the Holy Spirit

  737. like Jesus did in John.

  738. But here Paul tells them in verse three

  739. of chapter 12, "Wherefore I give you

  740. understanding, no man speaks by the

  741. spirit of God calls Jesus a cursed and

  742. no man can say Jesus is Lord but by the

  743. Holy Spirit." So that's where it begins.

  744. The new birth

  745. begins with the spirit coming

  746. upon us sinners.

  747. And then as he comes, he brings us not

  748. only salvation, but our the gifts for

  749. the church. And again, we'll spend some

  750. time on this and on a separate message,

  751. but we're just looking at this from the

  752. the power of the spirit point of view

  753. that the spirit's the one not only that

  754. brings us salvation, he also brings us

  755. our gifts and the diversity of them. You

  756. know, these things are left up to him,

  757. not up to us. And then Paul says, "And

  758. there are differences of administrations

  759. but the same Lord." There are

  760. diversities of operations but the same

  761. God who works all in all. So that's you

  762. know we all have God working in us now

  763. because of what Christ has done for us.

  764. And you know the reason for all this is

  765. as he he gives it here. another by faith

  766. and nine the same spirit to another the

  767. gifts of healing by the same spirit and

  768. Paul just continues to drive that home

  769. for us that's that's the reason and then

  770. here in verse 13

  771. the the baptism of the Holy Spirit is us

  772. getting the spirit of God upon belief

  773. and it's the spirit of God putting us

  774. into the body of Christ

  775. Both those things take place here and

  776. Paul mentions both of them in 1

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  777. Corinthians chapter 12. And again, we'll

  778. look at this a little deeper when we

  779. look at the gifts.

  780. But you know, the conclusion then is

  781. that the natural man cannot come to

  782. Christ on his own.

  783. He can't. You know, we have verse after

  784. verse on that one. and the the natural

  785. man, he's got a lot of problems.

  786. And Lord willing, we'll spend some time

  787. on those as well. When we when we get to

  788. man, we look at at those things and the

  789. issues that we have as the human race

  790. and as human beings. We're going to look

  791. at sin, talk about sin, as uncomfortable

  792. as that is, but this is how we learn.

  793. So, you know, Paul, he he um he

  794. persuaded men, didn't he?

  795. And how do you persuade men? Well, you

  796. persuade men with the word of God.

  797. That's how he did it. He said, "Knowing

  798. the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.

  799. We're going to, you know, that that word

  800. persuade means to bring about a change

  801. of mind." That's very similar to the

  802. word repentance.

  803. So Paul was persuading men to repent, to

  804. turn from their ways and turn to God and

  805. to obey the gospel.

  806. You know, that's what uh Paul did. And

  807. he took advantage of opportunities to

  808. preach the word of God. And as we saw in

  809. another place, the church was praying

  810. and uh you know for for so folks to be

  811. saved.

  812. So we need that as well. the the

  813. spirit's good, the word is good, but we

  814. need prayer uh as well. And the church

  815. needs to be a part of this as we try and

  816. win win win the lost.

  817. Now go to 2 Corinthians chapter 3.

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  818. 2 Corinthians chapter 3.

    2 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  819. You know this is so

  820. you know preachers will know this,

  821. teachers will know this.

  822. You know if you are involved in

  823. evangelism, if you've been born again

  824. and you, you know, you're saved and you

  825. understand the gospel and you believe

  826. the gospel, this is so we'll know what

  827. to do with people who are not saved.

  828. You know, and

  829. the word of God says that we need the

  830. spirit of God, we need the word of God,

  831. and we need prayer to win the lost. And

  832. here Paul says in chapter 3 in verse

  833. six, who also has made us able ministers

  834. of the New Testament,

  835. not of the letter, but of the spirit.

  836. The letter kills, but the spirit gives

  837. life.

  838. So we want to remember that that the

  839. Holy Spirit is the one who has life.

  840. He's the one who can give life, eternal

  841. life. You know, the kind of life that

  842. lasts forever.

  843. So men are dead in trespasses and sins.

  844. We have many verses on that. Um and

  845. their greatest need is then is to be

  846. saved by the gospel of grace. that can

  847. save them. But the natural man calls

  848. these things foolishly.

  849. You know, nobody's going to say, "Hey,

  850. would you give me the gospel?"

  851. Some people do, I guess. You know, I've

  852. heard I've heard some do that, but

  853. that's Mike Borland used to tease me at

  854. Chilikathtic Bible Church. He sat in the

  855. back kind of like I do now. And he he

  856. would if he had to go anywhere, he'd

  857. say, "Set back here and if anybody runs

  858. in and demands to hear the gospel, make

  859. sure you give it to them."

  860. But men are not looking for God

  861. ever.

  862. Regardless of what they think,

  863. uh they they don't they can't even see

  864. Jesus without the word of God. Oh, you

  865. might see a picture. You might see, you

  866. know, something. But without the word of

  867. God, you can't see Jesus because he's

  868. the light of the world.

  869. He's the logos of God. John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  870. So, we preachers should know

  871. these things about the gospel and the

  872. needs of uh the natural man. And Paul

  873. deals with these things in first

  874. Corinthians. And now here in in 2

  875. Corinthians, he tells us in verse three,

  876. he says, "If our gospel is hidden is

  877. hidden to them that are lost."

  878. I was on I lived on this earth for 23

  879. years before I heard the gospel,

  880. churches on every corner.

  881. But somebody finally brought me the

  882. gospel. And I'm I very thankful for

  883. that. It was hidden from me and I was

  884. lost.

  885. And then he goes on to say here, in whom

  886. the God of this age has blinded the

  887. minds of them who believe not.

  888. Now we're getting into our condition.

  889. Lest

  890. I'm sorry, 2 Corinthians chapter 4.

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  891. I said 3:6 and now I'm in chapter 4. I

  892. jumped over a bunch of verses.

  893. Second Corinthians chapter 4

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  894. >> and it's not physical birth or excuse me

  895. physical blindness like the blind man in

  896. John but these examples are in here so

  897. we'll just see just how blind we are

  898. and it's on a spiritual note.

  899. What do men need?

  900. The law.

  901. Well, they need the law to condemn them.

  902. The law Paul said the law is a school

  903. master to bring us to Christ.

  904. Well, here here's the Christ that we

  905. need brought to.

  906. And he says here, "Them that believe

  907. not, lest the light of a glorious gospel

  908. of Christ." You see the contrast? It's

  909. believe. It's faith.

  910. That's what it is. It's not works.

  911. It's faith.

  912. The light of the glorious gospel of

  913. Christ, who is the image of God should

  914. shine unto them.

  915. Paul said, "That's why I'm not

  916. interested in any popularity contest for

  917. Paul. I want to get the gospel out." And

  918. that's what he did in verse six. because

  919. he knew God was working

  920. in a great way. When wherever he went

  921. and wherever he preached Jesus and the

  922. resurrection,

  923. people were were being saved and getting

  924. saved. That's the only way. And that's

  925. the that's the reason the church exists

  926. is that we might shine

  927. uh

  928. in this dark world. We might be the salt

  929. and the light in this dark world.

  930. And then Paul says, "For God who

  931. commanded the light to shine out of

  932. dark, it's God's commandment. We're

  933. obeying God." So when we preach the

  934. gospel of Christ, when we shine the

  935. light of the glorious gospel

  936. uh to unsaved people and to the lost,

  937. we're doing the work of God

  938. because God's commanded this

  939. and he's sovereign over these things.

  940. and the light to shine out of darkness.

  941. He's shown it in our heart to give us

  942. the light. And where is it at? It's in

  943. the knowledge and the glory of God in

  944. the face of Jesus Christ. God's face is

  945. Jesus Christ. That's what this says. And

  946. Paul says there's nothing nothing I did,

  947. nothing I've deserved, nothing. There is

  948. no merit in me. I'm I'm the earth and

  949. vessel. Paul says down there in seven

  950. for all these things.

  951. So each believer has the Holy Spirit.

  952. Each believer should be um sharing the

  953. gospel as best we can with those who are

  954. not saved and who are not born again.

  955. Telling them like Jesus told Nicodemus,

  956. it's a must. It's a a must that you be

  957. must be born again. This isn't a

  958. suggestion from God. It's a commandment.

  959. Now, if you will turn over to the book

  960. of Ephesians,

  961. and Paul tells us over here about this

  962. darkness,

  963. Ephesians chapter 2 and verse one.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  964. And notice Paul starts this out with God

  965. quickened you. There's our word.

  966. The wind of God gave you life. God

  967. breathed in you and God gave you life

  968. after that wonderful chapter one.

  969. And we should never lose sight of this.

  970. He says in verse two, "In whom in time

  971. past you walked according to the course

  972. of this world." We weren't looking for

  973. God ever.

  974. No human being is ever looking for God.

  975. Every contact

  976. Uh, anyone that's ever saved or ever

  977. will be saved is initiated with God.

  978. We got our backs to him

  979. according to the prince of the power of

  980. the air. The spirit that now works in

  981. the sons of disobedience. That's the

  982. spirit we have. We got Satan's spirit in

  983. us, you know, in in in a sense that we

  984. have pride. His pride he passed on to

  985. Adam. Adam passed it on to us.

  986. So now the energy in us, the energy that

  987. works in us

  988. is pride that God hates.

  989. So God

  990. has to make the move. Verse three, among

  991. whom we also had our manner of life.

  992. Even Paul, God didn't look down and say,

  993. you know what, I think Paul make a good

  994. apostle.

  995. Well, God did look down and say that,

  996. but Paul became a great apostle not

  997. because of anything he did, but because

  998. of what Christ done for him. And that's

  999. what Paul said. We hear even by nature

1000. the children of wrath even as others. It

  1001. can't get any worse.

1002. So, this whole section here is is on

1003. this very thing. But God, who made the

  1004. first move?

1005. The one who always makes the move.

  1006. Uh, who chose Israel?

1007. Did they choose God? No. God chose them

1008. not because they were great, but because

  1009. they were the least.

1010. And you can say the same thing about us.

  1011. We're we're the least. We're great

1012. sinners. But God who was rich in mercy

1013. for his great love which which he loved

  1014. us

1015. even when we were in that condition. He

1016. didn't wait on us to get better. He

1017. loved us in that terrible condition.

1018. And he sent forth his grace. He sent

1019. forth this glorious gospel. This mighty

1020. gospel, the power of God, the gospel of

1021. God, the spirit of God.

1022. uh that in the ages to come that he

1023. might show us the exceeding riches of

1024. his grace and his kindness toward us.

  1025. God's kindness

1026. uh moved for by grace are you saved

1027. through faith and not of yourselves.

1028. There it is. It's a gift of God.

  1029. Salvation's a gift from this gracious,

  1030. kind,

1031. loving God upon terrible sinners. Like

1032. Romans chapter 5 says, not of works,

    Romans 5 chapter mention

1033. lest any man should bo,

1034. we are his workmanship, created in

1035. Christ Jesus unto good works. So that's

  1036. why we're, you know, that's why we're

  1037. not, you know, off,

1038. you know, somewhere else with with Lot's

  1039. wife

  1040. or or with Judas.

1041. God ordained that we should walk in

1042. these good works that he has called us

1043. to as well. He gets all the glory. He

1044. gets all the credit. He's done it all.

  1045. Chapter 1, verse three.

  1046. That's why Paul says

1047. if you understand God has done it all

1048. and it's a gift and you can say blessed

1049. be God and the father of our Lord Jesus

1050. Christ. He's blessed us with all spirit

1051. spiritual blessings in heavenly places.

  1052. And here's where

1053. Steven told the Jewish nation they were

1054. chosen by God. Here Paul tells the

1055. church you're chosen by God.

1056. according as he has chosen us before the

1057. foundation of the world that we should

  1058. be holy

  1059. and without blame.

1060. So Paul's saying that when we get to

1061. heaven and we're we have our we have our

1062. glorified bodies and we're in a holy

1063. heaven with a holy God. All that was the

1064. work of God, not any work on us. We

  1065. received the gift

1066. having predestinated us to the adoptions

1067. of son by Jesus Christ. Without Jesus

1068. Christ there is no adoption.

1069. Without Jesus Christ there is no

  1070. sunship.

1071. And he brought us to himself

1072. according to the good pleasure of his

1073. will. God has a will, doesn't he? to the

1074. praise of his glory, of his grace

1075. through which he has made us accepted in

1076. the beloved in whom we have redemption.

1077. What a word. What a wonderful word we

  1078. need redeemed.

  1079. We're sinners. God provided a great

1080. redemption through his son and through

1081. his blood that we might have not the

1082. forgiveness of most of our sins or the

1083. ones that we can remember

1084. or the ones that we can confess

  1085. know all our sins

1086. were laid on him according to his riches

  1087. of his grace

1088. in which he has abandoned or excuse me

1089. abounded toward us in all wisdom.

1090. and prudence. See that word wisdom

1091. again? That's what God wants us. He

1092. wants us to have heaven's wisdom now. He

1093. wants us to know these things now.

1094. You know, so that we might avoid sin. We

1095. might avoid all these terrible things

1096. are here on this world. We might avoid

  1097. uh the devil's kingdom

1098. and come to God. And then Paul talks

1099. about the Holy Spirit in verse 13.

1100. and whom after you trusted

1101. you heard the word of truth. How could

1102. you trust if you can't hear the word of

1103. truth? Well, Paul says faith comes by

1104. hearing and hearing by the word of God.

1105. So, we need both. We need the word of

1106. truth and we need faith and the gospel

1107. of our salvation in whom after we

  1108. believed we were sealed

1109. the Holy Spirit of promise. God

1110. seals those that are his. He's the Jesus

1111. is the great king. He knows who all his

1112. all of his sheep are.

1113. And then, you know, Paul goes on here to

1114. talk in verses 15 that God just would

1115. just enlighten us with these things.

  1116. Help us to understand

1117. all of these great things. Wherefore,

1118. after I've heard of your faith in the

1119. Lord and love toward the saints, cease

1120. not to give thanks for you making

1121. mention of you in our prayers.

1122. that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1123. the father of glory, may give unto you

1124. the spirit, there's that word again, of

1125. wisdom and revelation in the knowledge

1126. of him. What's our treasure? Our

1127. treasure is this wisdom of God, the

1128. understanding of God, the revelation of

1129. God that God has given to us, this great

1130. free gift of eternal life. Now turn to

1131. Romans chapter 8. Here we have

    Romans 8 chapter mention

1132. all of these laid together. Paul told

1133. the Corinthians that God justified you

1134. or the spirit justified you and

1135. sanctified you and will glorify you. So

1136. the first one's happened. The other two

  1137. are going to happen.

  1138. And here

  1139. in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

1140. Paul reminds them of a similar thing.

1141. He says in verse 28,

1142. "We know that all things work together

1143. for good to them that love God,

1144. to them who are called

1145. according to his purpose." The love of

1146. God called us. You know, that's

1147. uh election. That's the conviction that

1148. the spirit brings upon us as well. God.

1149. He called us. We didn't call him.

1150. And to them that are called according to

1151. his purpose. So God's got a great

1152. purpose. He didn't just save us. He

1153. wants us to be like his son.

1154. And whom he did forno. He predestinated

1155. to be conformed to the image of his son

1156. that he might be the firstborn among

1157. many brethren. And that's what Jesus is.

1158. We're going to be like him. He's our

  1159. older brother.

1160. Moreover, whom he did predestinate, them

  1161. he called.

1162. And see the see the great golden chain

1163. here as others have referred to.

1164. Moreover, whom he predestinated, them he

1165. called. Them he called, he also

1166. justified. And them he justified, he

1167. also glorified. You think God's going to

  1168. fail? Think again.

1169. And uh what shall we say then to these

1170. things? If God be for us, who can be

  1171. against us?

  1172. There's a word in verse 32 we want

1173. if you can find it. He that spared not

1174. his own son, but delivered him up for us

1175. all, how shall he not with him also?

  1176. There's our word. Freely

1177. give us all things. Salvation is a free

1178. gift from a holy and just God who

1179. condemned his son uh that we might um be

1180. with him in heaven. That's what the rest

1181. of this verse says. Who is he that

  1182. condemnth?

1183. Christ had died. Yay. Rather, he's risen

  1184. again. That's what we're celebrating

  1185. today.

1186. Not just that he rose. He's he's went

1187. beyond. He's seated at the right hand of

1188. the father. He's making intercession for

  1189. us.

1190. as the as the gospel goes forth, as the

1191. word of God goes forth, as these things

1192. go forth, we've got Jesus in in heaven

1193. helping uh us um with these things. And

1194. they're freely given there. Nothing

  1195. merited.

  1196. You can't merit salvation.

  1197. It's a free gift from a holy and

1198. gracious God. There is therefore now no

1199. condemnation to them that are in Christ.

  1200. Let's close in prayer.

1201. Father, we thank you this morning

1202. for the word of God. We thank you for

1203. the spirit of God. We thank you for the

1204. son of God who rose from the dead and

1205. seated at your right hand

1206. and will soon come back for us.

1207. Maybe through death, maybe through the

1208. rapture, maybe individually and through

1209. death, but collectively remove the

1210. church from this earth that we might be

1211. with our blessed Lord and have this

1212. great marriage that supper we're going

1213. to have in heaven. And we thank you for

1214. this amazing love to us worthless

1215. sinners. All we have is filthy rags. And

1216. you've given us a great gift and a great

1217. hope. We thank you for it in Jesus name.

  1218. Amen.

1219. Lord, as we go from this place,

  1220. loving you more,

  1221. trusting you more.

1222. May the power of your love and the light

  1223. of your word shine

1224. to sin darken world as we go from this
