  1. is the third message in a new series on

  2. biblical teaching of the resurrection of

  3. the dead in general and the resurrection

  4. of Christ in particular.

  5. So, we are definitely going to be

  6. dealing with his resurrection,

  7. but we're going to be dealing with our

  8. own resurrection.

  9. in fact the resurrection of all people

  10. saved and unsaved

  11. because of it.

  12. And so in Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  13. Matthew chapter 28

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  14. and our text that is our launchpad

  15. for this particular series is what we've

  16. often called the Great Commission. the

  17. great commission.

  18. Matthew 28:16.

    Matthew 28:16

  19. Then the 11 disciples went away into

  20. Galilee

  21. into a mountain

  22. into a mountain where Jesus hath

  23. appointed them. Some believe some

  24. believe that this is the same mountain

  25. where Jesus preached the sermon on the

  26. mount. I don't know. We don't know. the

  27. text doesn't say.

  28. Then when they saw him, they worshiped

  29. him, but some doubted.

  30. And Jesus came. And as we've said in

  31. previous messages, he came up. He was in

  32. the distance when he appeared.

  33. You don't want all these people running

  34. in all directions, scared to death.

  35. uh he was in the distance when he

  36. appeared and then he came up to them and

  37. spoke to them saying

  38. and as we've mentioned I believe that

  39. this is not just the 11 that Matthew

  40. mentions here but this is likely very

  41. very likely

  42. the time when he appeared to over 500 at

  43. once

  44. as Paul mentions in 1 Corinthians

  45. And Jesus came and spoke to them,

  46. saying, "All authority

  47. is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

  48. Go ye therefore and teach all nations,

  49. baptizing them in the name of the

  50. Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

  51. teaching them to observe all things

  52. whatsoever I've commanded you. And lo,

  53. I'm with you always, even to the end of

  54. the age." If you're new with us, uh

  55. remind you of what we said in previous

  56. messages. Three times the word all is

  57. used here. And then the word always is

  58. another form of the word all. So there's

  59. four alls here that are all very

  60. important if we want to understand this

  61. particular section of scripture.

  62. Um,

  63. years ago when I was in seminary, I was

  64. introduced to a book by Dr. John Walberg

  65. who was then president of Dallas

  66. Seminary.

  67. Uh, but I was introduced to this book at

  68. Grace Theological Seminary where I was

  69. going. It's a fine book called Jesus

  70. Christ our Lord.

  71. Jesus Christ our Lord. and he deals with

  72. all kinds of things concerning Jesus

  73. Christ our Lord. It was published in

  74. 1969 by Dr. Walford.

  75. And this is what he said. Those who

  76. investigate the facts

  77. concerning the resurrection of Christ

  78. as contained in the scriptures certainly

  79. have abundant evidence on which to rest

  80. their faith in Jesus Christ as their

  81. savior and God. Certainly have abundant

  82. evidence.

  83. Our faith is not a leap into the dark as

  84. Saren Kirkagar

  85. speculated.

  86. Our faith is a step into the light of

  87. God's

  88. revealed word.

  89. And it it's a step into the light and

  90. the evidence that that light gives us.

  91. And then Dr. That's me speaking there.

  92. But then Dr. Walbert lists the different

  93. appearances of the Lord in the New

  94. Testament.

  95. And he he believes this is the 10th

  96. appearance out of 17.

  97. And by 17, he's counting his appearances

  98. to Paul and to John much later. But uh

  99. those are just the ones that we have

  100. recorded in our Matthew, Mark, Luke, and

  101. John and Acts. But there are others, of

  102. course, because he appeared to them and

  103. ate and drank with them for 40 days.

  104. So, they had more evidence than we've

  105. got.

  106. They had evidence upon evidence upon

  107. evidence upon evidence.

  108. The enemies of Jesus were mad because

  109. they saw Lazarus sitting at table with

  110. Jesus after Jesus raised him from the

  111. dead. That made them nervous. Now we got

  112. to kill Lazarus and him.

  113. You can't kill your way out of the

  114. program of God.

  115. That's already been tried and is being

  116. tried all over the world right now.

  117. People are trying to kill their way out

  118. of the program of God.

  119. I read read in a in an article today

  120. about a pastor and his wife. They have

  121. little children and they're the Muslims

  122. are trying to kill them

  123. and they they're No, it's not Muslims.

  124. Excuse me. That I misspoke there. It's

  125. the the gangs in Colombia.

  126. in Colombia and they they rescued people

  127. from the Muslims, took him in a boat

  128. across the river and down the river and

  129. then he came back for his wife and

  130. children.

  131. Here's a guy that put the people that

  132. needed rescued first and then came back

  133. for his wife and children.

  134. They're putting their necks on the line

  135. every day. That's today. That's not

  136. something going on now.

  137. So, it's important for us to know that

  138. we have a we have a job to do. We have a

  139. ministry to partake of.

  140. And what the Lord did here to the 12, of

  141. course, they were apostles. They were

  142. special in one sense.

  143. And they did eat and drink with him for

  144. 40 days. And we don't know everything

  145. everything that was said or done there.

  146. But we do know all these appearances

  147. recorded in the Bible to the point of 17

  148. according to Dr. Wal.

  149. Now if you had 17 videos of Pastor Hixon

  150. robbing Hawking Valley Bank

  151. and eyewitnesses that said, "Yeah, he

  152. did it." You wouldn't expect this. I

  153. mean, Pastor Hixon never thought he'd do

  154. that, but he did it.

  155. that that amount of witnesses would um

  156. and plus a bank video

  157. would count a lot, wouldn't it? Get me

  158. convicted. How come that that's so easy

  159. to imagine and think that this is

  160. something not worthy of your attention?

  161. Um God has given us overwhelming

  162. confirmation

  163. of what has happened. You remember, and

  164. I've said this many times, some of you

  165. heard me, you could put a person to

  166. death in the Old Testament on the on the

  167. on the testimony of two or three

  168. witnesses. You always needed more than

  169. one.

  170. Two or three witnesses. That was enough

  171. for a life a life or death decision.

  172. And if two or three witnesses were

  173. enough to make a life or death decision,

  174. how about 500 plus

  175. witnesses

  176. that were probably here when this

  177. commission was given or even bring it

  178. down to the 11 surviving apostles.

  179. That's enough. It's more than enough.

  180. Let's not be ashamed of the gospel of

  181. Christ.

  182. It's the power of God to salvation to

  183. everyone that believes.

  184. There was a Jewish Christian, his name's

  185. Alfred Eershim,

  186. and he's written that massive volume,

  187. it's about that thick, on the life and

  188. times of Jesus, the Messiah.

  189. He published it in 1883. It's still

  190. being read today.

  191. Alfred Ethersheim said, "The world would

  192. not have been converted to a dead Jesus

  193. Christ." The world would not have been

  194. converted to a dead Jesus Christ.

  195. However, his intimate disciples might

  196. have continued to love his memory, but

  197. they preached everywhere. First and

  198. foremost, the resurrection of the dead.

  199. Why does everybody all over the world

  200. know about Jesus?

  201. It's because he arose from the dead.

  202. And it's because he rose from the dead

  203. that he was proclaimed

  204. as risen from the dead.

  205. There's an old saying,

  206. the church is built on the empty tomb.

  207. You've probably heard it. It's kind of

  208. kind of legitimate. There's a point to

  209. it. That's true. Kind of, but it's only

  210. half the truth.

  211. The empty tomb is half the truth.

  212. 1 Corinthians said Jesus was buried and

  213. rose again the third day according to

  214. the scriptures and was seen of Cphus and

  215. then of the 12 and then you know and he

  216. goes on and on.

  217. The empty tomb did not bring people to

  218. the right conclusion by itself. It

  219. needed more. Right? Every gospel you see

  220. that women said they stole the body,

  221. taken away the Lord. We don't know where

  222. they laid him.

  223. They got their exercise jumping to

  224. conclusions.

  225. But what we have in the New Testament is

  226. not just the empty tomb. We have what?

  227. The appearances of Jesus

  228. that overcome that overcome all the

  229. reticence.

  230. To the contrary.

  231. Now, I'm assuming you know your Bible. I

  232. don't have to turn to these texts.

  233. Do you remember when David was sitting

  234. at the tables with King Saul and King

  235. Saul became suspicious of him?

  236. And he started throwing spears. Remember

  237. that?

  238. Trying to pin David to the wall.

  239. Now, that's really not proper table

  240. etiquette.

  241. And if you had somebody do that to you,

  242. would you want to eat with them again?

  243. But in 1st Samuel 20,

  244. David's seat was empty.

  245. He didn't come.

  246. And uh King Saul thought, "Well, he's

  247. unclean."

  248. The next day it was empty again.

  249. Uh so he asked Jonathan, "Where's

  250. where's David?" David said, "Oh, he's on

  251. a trip with family."

  252. So the first possible interpretation,

  253. he's unclean. He's not here because he's

  254. not ceremony unclean. Second one was

  255. he's on a trip with his family. Neither

  256. of those were true.

  257. And then Saul launched into this

  258. horrible

  259. tirade against his own son

  260. and started threw a spear at

  261. David's best friend.

  262. David's seat being empty was subject to

  263. different interpretations.

  264. This is what I'm trying to get. The

  265. empty seat

  266. was subject to different

  267. interpretations. The empty grave was

  268. subject to empty definite

  269. different interpretations.

  270. Do you remember the empty pictures of

  271. Gideon soldiers?

  272. The empty pictures of Gideon soldiers.

  273. Um

  274. uh remember they had a light inside, a

  275. lamp inside. The empty pictures of

  276. Gideon soldiers without the light would

  277. have done nothing to scare the other

  278. soldiers into thinking they were

  279. surrounded.

  280. So whether it's the empty seat of David

  281. at the dinner table of Saul or the empty

  282. pictures of Gideon,

  283. the empty pictures, the empty seat are

  284. not enough. It takes more and it takes

  285. more than the empty tomb. Although the

  286. church is built on the empty tomb, yes,

  287. it has to be empty.

  288. If he's still in the grave, there's no

  289. resurrection.

  290. But the empty the church is built on

  291. something more than the empty tomb. It's

  292. the church is built on the risen Christ.

  293. The risen Christ.

  294. It's the risen Christ that's building

  295. his church.

  296. So, it's just kind of important to get

  297. that in our heads

  298. and the significance of this 10th

  299. appearance of the risen Lord Jesus

  300. Christ.

  301. Now, this appearance took place in

  302. Galilee.

  303. the appearances on Easter morning and

  304. Easter evening and the appearances uh

  305. the next week after that to Thomas and

  306. the appearances on the Emmas road that

  307. ended up in the appearance or it was all

  308. in Jerusalem. Jerusalem is 60 miles from

  309. Galilee

  310. and remember Jesus told them and the

  311. angels told them go to Galilee and

  312. you'll see him. So finally they went to

  313. Galilee.

  314. This is not the first appearance in

  315. Galilee. I think when Peter went fishing

  316. and caught nothing, that was a previous

  317. appearance in Galilee. They were up

  318. there waiting Peter and the seven for

  319. everybody else to show up and most

  320. importantly for Jesus to showed up and

  321. because they got there early, they got

  322. an extra Jesus cooked breakfast for them

  323. on that morning.

  324. Now, as we move through these multiple

  325. appearances,

  326. we're going to do something in our

  327. series.

  328. Last week, we looked at the difference

  329. between reincarnation and resurrection.

  330. And we did that so we would emphasize

  331. our understanding of resurrection, that

  332. those two are mutually exclusive

  333. concepts.

  334. We're not going to review that.

  335. Really, there's three options. There's

  336. reincarnation,

  337. there's naturalism,

  338. and there's reincarn and there's

  339. resurrection. Reincarnation, naturalism,

  340. reincarnation.

  341. And of course, naturalism says what?

  342. When you're dead, you're dead. There's

  343. no resurrection. There's no eternal

  344. life. That you got a covenant with death

  345. and it'll stand.

  346. Reincarnation is this. You're recycled.

  347. You're recycled like an old plastic

  348. bottle.

  349. You come back different than what you

  350. were before. You're a different person,

  351. a different body. And the karma and

  352. karma is part of the deal there. And

  353. nothing about forgiveness, nothing about

  354. God being your savior. It's you save

  355. yourself because you finally figure out

  356. what's going on and get the right

  357. actions to bring come back higher

  358. instead of lower. It's all auto

  359. esoteric.

  360. But then there's what?

  361. Resurrection.

  362. So there's naturalism, atheis, which is

  363. atheism or materialism, whichever ism

  364. you want to make it. In their mind, when

  365. you when you die, you cease to exist.

  366. um

  367. in the United States.

  368. It's amazing to me what's going on

  369. today.

  370. There was just a poll taken not very

  371. long ago. Uh

  372. 80% of the people today believe in an

  373. afterlife.

  374. 80%.

  375. Does it surprise you? That does me. But

  376. guess what?

  377. There were only 73% that believed in an

  378. afterlife back in back in that was that

  379. poll was taken in 2014. There were only

  380. 73% that be believed in a afterlife in

  381. 19

  382. 54.

  383. So more people believe in an afterlife

  384. now than ever. But they they're all

  385. fuzzy about it. They just believe we're

  386. going to everything's good. It's not

  387. really anything about understanding the

  388. Bible or understanding truth or

  389. understanding gospel.

  390. They're hostile to the God of the Bible,

  391. but we're going to live forever.

  392. Everybody Everybody's going to be there.

  393. Entitlement culture kind of believes,

  394. well, yeah, why would I deserve to be

  395. anywhere else?

  396. They don't want to be with God in this

  397. life. I don't know why they'd want to be

  398. with him in the next life.

  399. or they may not even believe in God, but

  400. they they believe they're going to be

  401. surviving death. Tons of mixed up people

  402. today.

  403. Some are in churches.

  404. So, let's come to our subject and let's

  405. look at naturalism.

  406. The idea when you're dead, you're dead.

  407. That is it.

  408. The Sadducees believed that. The Bible

  409. says they didn't believe in angels or

  410. spirit or resurrection.

  411. That's what their doctrinal statement

  412. said.

  413. Now, how does the risen Lord deal with

  414. people like this?

  415. When we learn from him, we can learn how

  416. to do it ourselves.

  417. But this is kind of important, isn't it?

  418. Because a lot of people that you meet

  419. and I meet, they're either mixed up in

  420. reincarnation or they're mixed up in

  421. naturalism

  422. or some even say they believe in

  423. everybody's going to be resurrected but

  424. they don't know how they don't know the

  425. way of salvation or anything like that.

  426. So, but we're going to start with the

  427. naturalism. What what do we do here?

  428. Well, let's look in Matthew 22.

  429. Matthew 22.

  430. Our Lord had plenty of contacts with the

  431. Sadducees. It was Sadducees that killed

  432. him, by the way.

  433. They're the ones behind his death.

  434. And uh

  435. the Pharisees were involved as well.

  436. Sadducees were the officers in the

  437. Sanhedrin.

  438. But in uh Matthew chapter 22,

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  439. everybody has their Stump the Christian

  440. or Stump the Preacher Bible question,

  441. don't they?

  442. I bet if I went around, you've probably

  443. heard a lot of Stump the Bible preach

  444. preacher question. Where did Cain get

  445. his wife? Oh, we got him on that. Never

  446. be able to answer that one. Yeah,

  447. there's plenty of easy answers on that

  448. if you just know your Bible, but they

  449. don't know their Bible. They just want

  450. to make you they want to embarrass the

  451. Christian or the preacher.

  452. That's the kind of thing people do.

  453. Or snakes don't talk. There's another

  454. one.

  455. So those kind of questions. The

  456. Pharisees had their stump the preacher

  457. question. No doubt they'd used it

  458. hundreds of times

  459. on the Pharisees who did believe in the

  460. resurrection.

  461. But notice in verse Matthew 22:23,

    Matthew 22:23

  462. the same day, that's the same day he

  463. defeated the Herodians. The same day

  464. came to him the Sadducees, Matthew

    Matthew 22:23

  465. 22:23,

  466. who say there's no resurrection. Now,

  467. that's what they say. That's their

  468. doctrinal statement. Here comes their

  469. trick question. from the Bible. They're

  470. using Bible verses and they're saying if

  471. these verses are true, these other

  472. verses can't be true

  473. saying, "Master Moses said, if a man die

  474. having no children, his brother shall

  475. marry his wife and raise up seed to his

  476. brother." Now there were with us,

  477. hypothetical question, there were with

  478. us seven brethren, and the first when he

  479. married a wife, died, and having no

  480. issue, that means no children, left his

  481. wife unto his brother. This is all live

  482. right marriage.

  483. Likewise the second also and the third

  484. to the seventh and last of all the woman

  485. died also.

  486. So in their hypothetical question this

  487. woman killed off seven men.

  488. Maybe it was her cooking. I don't know.

  489. And then finally she dies.

  490. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife

  491. shall she be of the seven? for they all

  492. had her. Ha ha ha. You can't answer that

  493. one.

  494. We got you on that one. Who's going to

  495. be she going to have seven husbands? No

  496. way that's going to happen in heaven.

  497. Which of the seven are going to get her?

  498. So if the Bible's true that marriage

  499. should be one man, one woman,

  500. and if if liber is the exception,

  501. if a husband dies, she can marry the

  502. brother. And if those things are all

  503. true, then resurrection is ridiculous

  504. because you'd have to end up with seven

  505. husbands in there.

  506. What's how Jesus going to answer that

  507. one?

  508. He answers it with a Bible verse.

  509. He answers it with Exodus chapter 3. He

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  510. answers it with the tense of a verb.

  511. The tense of a verb

  512. in a Bible verse at the burning bush

  513. where God says, "I am the God of

  514. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." He didn't

  515. say, "I was the God of Abraham, Isaac,

  516. and Jacob to Moses." He said, "I am the

  517. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."

  518. That's a tense of a verb. Jesus, why is

  519. it important to read the Bible

  520. carefully?

  521. Jesus makes an argument on the tense of

  522. a verb. That's not the only time he does

  523. it.

  524. And Jesus answered and said, "You do air

  525. not knowing the scriptures." How many

  526. people heir because they don't know the

  527. Bible? I got into all kinds of trouble

  528. as a young person because I'd never read

  529. the Bible through, not even once.

  530. You wouldn't

  531. Well, my friend Larry Simmons here, he

  532. knew kind of the stuff I got into, but

  533. it was because I didn't know the Bible.

  534. He said, "You do Jesus said, you don't

  535. you do not knowing the scriptures nor

  536. the power of God. For in the

  537. resurrection, they need neither marry

  538. nor are given in marriage. Marriage

  539. isn't for the afterlife. That doesn't

  540. mean we won't have social relationships,

  541. but we don't need marriage. Why? Because

  542. they'll be like the angels of God in

  543. heaven. What's that mean? It means you

  544. don't die. So, you don't need to

  545. multiply because you don't die.

  546. People are think they're so smart around

  547. the world. The Chinese have done this.

  548. The Europeans have done it. Oh, we don't

  549. want to have kids. And then they wonder

  550. why their society's gone down. we're not

  551. multiplying.

  552. So you lose your culture.

  553. And so we're, you know, we are to marry,

  554. we are to have children. That's

  555. important.

  556. That's biblical.

  557. And so, but anyway, uh, as we do do

  558. these things and as we think about these

  559. things, we also know that marriage is

  560. for this life.

  561. There'll be no ch marriage in heaven

  562. because there's no death in heaven for

  563. Christians.

  564. We don't have to re replenish ourselves.

  565. We'll be like the angels. Now, we're not

  566. going to become angels. Don't say that.

  567. That's a heresy. We'll be like the

  568. angels in one way. We won't be able to

  569. die. Angels don't die. All the angels

  570. are as old as the hills, right?

  571. They all celebrated when God started

  572. creating this earth.

  573. They're all the same age.

  574. No baby angels, no teenage angels.

  575. So that's the picture. So Jesus said,

  576. "You heir, you don't know the scriptures

  577. or the power of God." And for in the

  578. resurrection, they neither married nor

  579. given in marriage. You say, "Well, I

  580. kind of like being married. That's going

  581. to be a hard thing. Whatever the social

  582. relationships in heaven are going to be,

  583. they'll be better than the ones down

  584. here.

  585. but are like the angels of God in

  586. heaven. But is touching the resurrection

  587. of the dead? Have you not read? Have you

  588. not read? Is Jesus going to have hold us

  589. accountable for reading a Bible that

  590. he's given us? Yes.

  591. Have you not read

  592. that which was spoken to you by God?

  593. Spoken to you by God. Yeah. It's in your

  594. Bible, so it's spoken to you. It was

  595. spoken to Moses. But what God said to

  596. Moses is written down so God can speak

  597. to you. God wants you to know about the

  598. burning bush. God wants you to know

  599. about the commission of Moses. God wants

  600. you to know it very very well. And the

  601. tense of the verb proves it. God says,

  602. "I am the God of Abraham, the God of

  603. Isaac, the God of Jacob." And Jesus

  604. added, "God's not the God of the dead,

  605. but of the living."

  606. In other words, Moses, Abraham, Isaac,

  607. and Jacob all survived death.

  608. God's not the God of the dead.

  609. He's a God of the living.

  610. But surviving death, if your spirit uh

  611. survives death when it leaves your body,

  612. it implies something else. Resurrection.

  613. That's that's a teaching of the Old

  614. Testament. You don't survive death just

  615. to be a spirit all eternity. You get

  616. your body back.

  617. And when the multitude heard this,

  618. they were astonished

  619. at his gospel.

  620. Um,

  621. how does God work? He works through

  622. scripture.

  623. He advances an argument on the tense of

  624. a verb.

  625. Is it important for us to know our

  626. Bibles?

  627. Yes.

  628. And so very important. Everything Jesus

  629. says is very important. And this

  630. Sadducees were trying to say if this one

  631. thing is true, this other thing can't be

  632. true. And Jesus says, no, you're the

  633. ones that are wrong. You don't know your

  634. Bibles. You think you do. You know

  635. nothing.

  636. So the in the power of God

  637. uh

  638. the dead are raised and

  639. no one has to multiply after they die

  640. because nobody's going to die anymore.

  641. That's a good thing.

  642. A good thing.

  643. So God's relationship with his people

  644. outlast physical death.

  645. He knows them. He knows his plan for

  646. them. And his plan is revealed.

  647. Now, there's other passages in the Old

  648. Testament about resurrection, very

  649. clear. Daniel chapter 12, uh, uh, Psalm

    Daniel 12 chapter mention

  650. 22. There's many other passages that are

  651. very clear about survival after death.

  652. But Jesus used it used their own because

  653. the Sadducees only believed in the first

  654. five books of the Bible. They didn't

  655. believe the rest of Sadducees did or the

  656. Pharisees did. Rest of the Jews did. But

  657. the Sadducees only would take the first

  658. five. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus,

  659. Numbers, Deuteronomy. So he nailed them

  660. with their own scripture.

  661. Now there's an application to us.

  662. If you had a Jehovah Witness coming to

  663. you and trying to spread his doctrine

  664. that Jesus isn't God, he's a god, but

  665. he's not God

  666. and he came to you with John 1:1, would

    John 1:1

  667. you know how to defeat that?

  668. Their their their translation of John

    John 1:1

  669. 1:1 is a god.

  670. The only problem with their translation

  671. is Greek doesn't have an indefinite

  672. article. It has a definite article, no

  673. indefinite article. just a very basic

  674. fact

  675. and the emphasis of John 1:1 is the the

    John 1:1

  676. quality of Jesus's deity.

  677. Uh so we ought to know something like

  678. that. How about the plurality of the

  679. godhead? Deuteronomy 6, if you deal with

  680. a Jewish person here, O Israel, the Lord

  681. our God is one. And they bring they

  682. bring the shea to you and what am I

  683. going to do with that? Says there's only

  684. one God. How can there be three persons

  685. called God? How can there be a plurality

  686. in the Godhead?

  687. Well, I hope we understand something

  688. basic.

  689. There's two Hebrew words for one.

  690. Two different Hebrews words for one. And

  691. the one used in Deuteronomy 6 that the

  692. Jews quote all the time is a hod.

  693. It's a unity that includes a plurality.

  694. It's the same word used of Adam and Eve

  695. are one flesh. That's two people, one

  696. flesh.

  697. It's used of the two sticks in Ezekiel

  698. uh representing the nation of Israel and

  699. uh the nation of Judah. And the two are

  700. become one. It's

  701. so it's not a oneness that excludes a

  702. plurality within the oneness. It's a

  703. oneness that includes a plurality within

  704. the oneness. We should, these are basic

  705. things that pastors should teach their

  706. people that people ought to know. If

  707. you're going to witness to a Jew, you

  708. need to know that. If you're going to

  709. witness to Jehovah Witness, you need to

  710. know John 1:1 and what it says and what

    John 1:1

  711. it doesn't say. Now, by the way, I've

  712. done that and had them stick right with

  713. their own message even right after I did

  714. it. Just don't know what to do with that

  715. except pray for that person.

  716. But we ought to be able to give an

  717. answer to every man that ask us of a

  718. reason for the hope that's within us. If

  719. we're working with a Roman Catholic, do

  720. we know how to work with a Roman

  721. Catholic?

  722. They claim to be Christians

  723. and some of them are in spite of their

  724. church. But do we know how to deal with

  725. a Roman Catholic?

  726. You understand their view of

  727. justification

  728. is completely and totally off. They

  729. believe justification means to make

  730. righteous and that goes with their whole

  731. system of salvation where the church

  732. saves you through this right and that

  733. right and so forth else to make

  734. righteous. But de Caillou never ever

  735. ever in Greek in Greek literature, not

  736. just the Bible, but in the Bible and

  737. outside the Bible, it never means to

  738. make righteous. It always means to

  739. declare righteous.

  740. And that's the whole reformation.

  741. That's justification where you're

  742. declared just. It's a legal declaration.

  743. It's not dealing with our conduct. It's

  744. dealing with our status.

  745. So important stuff. Do we know how to

  746. show that the resurrection of Christ is

  747. according to the Old Testament? That

  748. there's Old Testament verses that the

  749. Messiah would be raised. There is Psalm

  750. 16 was one the early church used. Psalm

  751. 22,

  752. Isaiah 53 when Christ died for our sins

  753. according to the scriptures. Those are

  754. basic basic things.

  755. So the Lord Jesus when he would deal

  756. with the naturalist

  757. deals with them with scripture and they

  758. say I don't believe the scripture. Well,

  759. I do.

  760. You got to think about this.

  761. And we we we we don't let they want to

  762. shut the conversation down by saying, "I

  763. don't believe the scripture."

  764. And but most if you ask them, "What? You

  765. don't believe the scripture? You must

  766. have read the Bible through. If you

  767. don't believe the Bible, you must have

  768. read it all the way through."

  769. I'll guarantee you 99.9% of them will

  770. have to answer no. I've never read it.

  771. They haven't even read the New

  772. Testament.

  773. They don't believe.

  774. But it takes biblically literate people

  775. to minister to lost people, to

  776. Sadducees. Even though they don't

  777. believe the Bible, we do believe it. And

  778. we are to quote it and trust it won't

  779. come back.

  780. What did Jesus do on the road to Emmas?

  781. He started at Moses

  782. and then the Psalms and then the

  783. prophets and did what?

  784. Told him all the scriptures concerning

  785. himself. He didn't just say, "Here I am.

  786. Recognize me?" He did that. But he did

  787. others as well that the Old Testament

  788. predicted and pictured his resurrection

  789. before it ever happened.

  790. So our Lord dealt with the materialist,

  791. the naturalist, the atheistic

  792. person kind of person with scripture.

  793. Even though they don't believe the

  794. scriptures, he dealt with it. He dealt

  795. with the Sadducees with the scriptures.

  796. They did believe uh well kind of believe

  797. at least professed to believe. So he

  798. dealt with people scripturally. So, we

  799. need to know this book, don't we? If if

  800. I one thing this Easter, I need to know

  801. the Bible. I need to know better than I

  802. know it now. I need to know this book.

  803. What did Jesus do on earth on what' he

  804. do on Easter? What did he do when he was

  805. resurrection? He was opening the Bible

  806. to him all the time.

  807. So, may God help us to have that

  808. conviction that in the year 2026, I'm

  809. going to read through the New Testament.

  810. I'm going to read through the Old

  811. Testament for the next year. Going to

  812. learn the Bible better than I know it.

  813. And then the next year, for the rest of

  814. my life, I'll start over again.

  815. So, the Lord dealt with uh

  816. people scripturally. Second, he deals

  817. with people strategically.

  818. Strategically.

  819. This is very very important.

  820. And this is how he dealt with uh the

  821. Sanhedrin that was governed by

  822. Sadducees. Our Lord deals with people

  823. strategically. He outmaneuvered his

  824. opponent like a general is dealing

  825. strategically in a way that can produce

  826. effective and helpful results by

  827. outmaneuvering the opponent.

  828. Remember the uh story about the prodical

  829. son, the parable of the prodical son.

  830. You remember why Jesus told that

  831. parable?

  832. Because he had people criticizing him

  833. for receiving sinners.

  834. He told that parable to people say,

  835. "You're you're wrong. You're you're

  836. hanging out with sinners. You're you're

  837. spending too much time with sinners."

  838. And they were trying to make it a bad

  839. thing.

  840. And in the pro prodical son parable,

  841. what is that all about?

  842. The the so-called prodal son is not as

  843. bad as the son that wasn't the prodal

  844. that was self-righteous and criticizing

  845. the father in the parable about

  846. receiving

  847. his brother after he spent his money on

  848. harlots and so forth. Just like the

  849. critics of Jesus were criticizing him

  850. for spending time with sinners. So he

  851. dealt with them strategically.

  852. Our Lord is a master chess player.

  853. You've heard the expression

  854. three-dimensional chess.

  855. Three-dimensional chess. The Pharisees

  856. were playing checkers. Jesus was playing

  857. three-dimensional chess.

  858. He outthought them.

  859. He was observing them and he knew how to

  860. bring the scriptures to bear on them.

  861. Just like a chess master knows what

  862. piece to do. He'll sacrifice some pieces

  863. to get you into a place where you're

  864. cornered.

  865. The Lord Jesus knows how to do these

  866. things. Turn to Matthew chapter 27.

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  867. This one makes me laugh.

  868. Matthew 27.

  869. Now, this is a providential thing, not a

  870. scriptural thing.

  871. But in Matthew 27,

  872. I want you to notice what happens.

  873. In verse 62,

  874. Matthew 27:62,

    Matthew 27:62

  875. watch what happens. The enemies of Jesus

  876. crucified him.

  877. And now they start being worried about

  878. the disciples coming and stealing the

  879. body and saying he's risen.

  880. They didn't think about that at the

  881. beginning, but they start thinking about

  882. it. So they wanted to get the jump on

  883. the disciples

  884. and on Jesus. Matthew 27:62. Now the

    Matthew 27:62

  885. next day that followed, the day of

  886. preparation, the chief priests and

  887. Pharisees came together to Pilate,

  888. saying, "Sir, we remember that the

  889. deceiver said, while he was yet alive,

  890. after three days, I'll rise again." We

  891. remember that. We remember what he was

  892. saying. The funny thing is they

  893. remembered it and the Christians forgot

  894. it. His

  895. enemies remembered it.

  896. And so they said, "Command therefore

  897. that the suppler be made sure until the

  898. third day. Only think three days." Three

  899. days is all we need. Three days guard at

  900. the and then we can go away cuz he said

  901. third day.

  902. Lest his disciples come by night and

  903. steal him away and say to the people,

  904. "He's risen from the dead. So the last

  905. air will be worse than the first."

  906. Pilate said, "Go, you have got a watch.

  907. Go your way. Make it as strong as you

  908. can, as sure as you can." So they went

  909. and made the supplicer sure, sealing the

  910. stone, setting the watch. What did his

  911. enemies do? They guarded the tomb. They

  912. sealed the tomb.

  913. Oh, they did more than that.

  914. They revealed that they heard what Jesus

  915. said about rising from the dead the

  916. third day. It wasn't just the Christians

  917. that said it.

  918. It was the people who murdered him said

  919. he said it.

  920. He said he's going to rise from the

  921. dead. He said he's going to do it on the

  922. third day. They actually put that out

  923. there to Pilate.

  924. Now, this is a fascinating thing. How

  925. embarrassing for them

  926. because the enemy, we got proof that

  927. Jesus said he'd rise from the dead, not

  928. from believers, but from unbelievers.

  929. that this is what he really said.

  930. This is strategic. This is a strategic

  931. move on the Lord Jesus Christ.

  932. Uh

  933. and what a defeat it was for them. So

  934. you know what General Patton was in

  935. World War II to the German armies. Jesus

  936. was in his conduct on this occasion to

  937. the uh his enemies in the Sanhedrin. He

  938. just he just ran over them.

  939. He got them to legitimize his own

  940. prophecies

  941. to pilot to the point it's in our Bible

  942. today. There's no matching Jesus here.

  943. You can't out You can't out You can't

  944. out think him.

  945. People think they're so smart.

  946. I'm mentioning chess, but I used to play

  947. chess with my dad. I couldn't hardly

  948. beat my dad. He always beat me, but I'd

  949. play checkers with my grandfather and I

  950. couldn't win checkers from my

  951. grandfather. He just he'd play checkers

  952. with me and and I thought I was winning

  953. and then all of a sudden he jumped four

  954. on my checkers and crowned himself and

  955. okay, don't play checkers with an old

  956. man

  957. knows what he's doing.

  958. So, our Lord dealt with his enemies

  959. scripturally. He dealt with them

  960. strategically, but that wasn't the main

  961. thing. The main thing was

  962. supernaturally.

  963. That's what Easter's all about. He He

  964. rose.

  965. They wanted to kill Lazarus because he

  966. rose in a much different way than Jesus

  967. did. And they then they wanted to kill

  968. Jesus. And they definitely wanted to

  969. keep him dead,

  970. but he arose a victor over the dark

  971. domain

  972. supernatural.

  973. And you know, he is the one that all

  974. that are in the graves are going to hear

  975. his voice

  976. and come forth. What the Bible, that's

  977. what Jesus said. John five, all saved

  978. and unsaved going to come forth.

  979. Some are going to come forth to in a

  980. good way to heaven and to eternity with

  981. him. Some are going to come forth to

  982. judgment, but they're all going to come

  983. forth.

  984. And that's a blessed thought and it's a

  985. good thought.

  986. And um Jesus said, "I'm with you always,

  987. even to the end of the age. I'm a risen.

  988. I'm ascended. I'm ascending. Uh and I

  989. will still be doing miracles.

  990. I'm risen so I can raise the dead. The

  991. spiritually dead. Spiritual spiritual

  992. death is harder to overcome than

  993. physical death. I hope we all understand

  994. that.

  995. That dead body in the grave does not

  996. resist.

  997. Your dead soul does resist.

  998. Spiritual resurrection is harder to

  999. accomplish than physical resurrection.

  1000. So, if you're a saved person and you've

1001. been born again, God's already done the

  1002. hard part.

1003. He didn't leave your soul in death as

1004. Ephesians 2 talks about and other

1005. places. And we're new creatures in

  1006. Christ

1007. as 2 Corinthians talks about. So, our

1008. Lord deals with this thing

  1009. supernaturally, his own resurrection,

1010. but then the resurrection of others

1011. spiritually. He opened Lydia's heart,

1012. which means her heart was closed. She

1013. was spiritually dead. He's opening

  1014. hearts of people today

  1015. and u

1016. thank God for that. Now ma Acts 23 and

  1017. I'm done. Acts 23 and I'm done.

1018. Now this Lord Jesus who rose from the

1019. dead uh script scripturally who deals

1020. with his enemies that deny it

  1021. strategically.

1022. He also deals with people

  1023. supernaturally.

1024. He opened Lydia's heart. He opened the

  1025. Philippians jailer's heart.

1026. He opened your heart. He opened my

  1027. heart.

1028. And thank God for it. In Matthew 23, we

  1029. have the Apostle Paul.

1030. And here, Paul was a Pharisee. Remember

1031. that? He wasn't a Sadducee. He believed

1032. in the resurrection. He just didn't

  1033. believe in Jesus

  1034. or Jesus's resurrection.

1035. But Paul finds himself providentially

1036. being brought before not just the whole

1037. city of Jerusalem in the temple in that

1038. riot, but now to the Sanhedrin.

1039. This was an incredible moment.

1040. And Paul wasn't perfect at this moment.

  1041. He lost his temper

1042. and the Bible records it.

1043. But I want you to notice what happened.

1044. Acts 23 verse one. And Paul earnestly

1045. beholding the council said, "Men and

1046. brethren, I've lived in all good

1047. conscience before God to this day." And

1048. the high priest, Annis, Ananas,

1049. commanded them to stood by to smite him

1050. on the mount. Here's where Paul lost his

1051. temper. You and I probably would, too.

1052. Then Paul said, "God's going to smite

1053. you, you might wall, for sendest thou to

1054. judge me after the law, and command me

1055. to be smitten contrary to the law."

1056. Now, Paul was right, but he wasn't right

1057. with a loud voice. He lost his temper.

1058. And they that stood by said, "Revile

1059. thou God's high priest? Do you know who

1060. you're talking to?" And Paul had to eat

1061. some toenails there, right? Foot and

  1062. mouth.

1063. Then said Paul, "I knew not." It was,

  1064. "Brethren, he's a high priest. For it's

1065. written, you'll not speak evil of the

1066. ruler of your people. You respect the

1067. office even you don't respect the man."

1068. But here comes the great point. Remember

1069. the Sanhedrin is made up of Sadducees

  1070. and Pharisees.

1071. Quote, "And Paul, he was a Pharisee

1072. before he was saved. In fact, his dad

  1073. was a Pharisee."

1074. So Paul wasn't just a Pharisee, he was

1075. the son of a Pharisee. He had double

1076. qualifications of any of those guys in

  1077. that room.

1078. So what Paul does is he divides the

  1079. herd.

1080. He knows the Sadducees aren't going to

  1081. hear.

1082. He knows the only body that's going to

1083. even give him any half of listening is

  1084. the Pharisees.

1085. So this is what he does. When Paul

1086. perceived that one part were Sadducees

1087. and the other Pharisees, he cried out in

1088. the council, "Men and brethren, I'm a

1089. Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee, and of

1090. the hope of the resurrection of the

1091. dead, I'm called into question."

1092. And when he so said, there arose a

1093. dissension between the Pharisees and

1094. Sadducees, and the multitude was

1095. divided. For the Sadducees say, there's

1096. no resurrection, neither angel nor

1097. spirit. But the Pharisees confess both.

1098. And there arose a great cry. And the

1099. scribes, the Pharisee party arose and

1100. said, "We find no evil in this man, but

1101. if a spirit or angel spoken to him,

1102. let's not fight against God." And when

1103. there arose a great dissension,

1104. the chief captain, fearing Paul should

1105. have been pulled in pieces by them,

1106. commanded the soldiers to go down and

1107. take him by force from among them and to

1108. bring him into the barracks.

1109. You know, he got the truth out

  1110. as best he could

1111. to that group of murderers,

  1112. Pharisees and Sadducees.

1113. Sometimes we we mess up in our witness.

1114. We say, "Oh, if I had just said more, if

1115. I'd have just done a little differently,

1116. that person got mad. They got upset.

  1117. They left.

1118. And Paul must have been feeling real bad

1119. about it. Started a riot in the temple.

1120. People says not fit for him to live. Now

1121. in Sanhedrin probably thought I blew it

1122. again. Notice the next verse. The night

1123. following the Lord stood by him

1124. and said, "Be good cheer, Paul.

  1125. They hated your sermon

1126. in Jerusalem. They wanted to kill you

  1127. for it.

1128. They they persecuted you and twisted

  1129. everything in the Sanhedrin.

1130. They hated everything you said.

1131. That's what Jesus is saying.

1132. That stumbling and that difficulty and

1133. that chaos. Be a good cheer, Paul. For

1134. as you've testified of me in Jerusalem,

1135. so must you bear witness to Rome. going

1136. to be bad in Rome, too. It's going to be

1137. tough over there. But I like what you

1138. did. I liked how how you did it.

1139. And we're not after results. We're after

  1140. honoring our blessed Lord.

1141. So may God help us to think about these

1142. things. One last thought and I'm done.

  1143. I love the story in 2 Kings 7:7-9.

    2 Kings 7:7–9

1144. The city of Samaria is being besieged

  1145. by the Syrians

1146. and the Jews in that city of Samaria are

  1147. starving.

1148. They're starving to death. People are

  1149. eating their children.

1150. They eat all eating all the horses. A

  1151. horrible situation.

1152. when they're starving inside the gate.

1153. The enemies have got them surrounded.

1154. There's four lepers outside the city

  1155. gate.

  1156. They're starving.

1157. Nobody wants them in the city.

1158. And they said, "We're going to die.

1159. If we go in the city, there's no food

  1160. there.

1161. If we stay here, we're going to die.

1162. let's go to the Syrians and just say we

  1163. give up.

  1164. Maybe they'll feed us.

1165. And that's what they do. So they take

1166. off for the army camp. They're between

1167. the city and the army camp surrounding

1168. the city and they go there and

  1169. everybody's gone.

1170. The Lord had caused them to hear the

1171. approaching army. It was a supernatural

1172. event. And the the the Assyrians all got

1173. scared and ran. They left their money.

1174. They left their food. They left their

1175. tents. They left their armor. They were

1176. just out off to the hills as fast. And

1177. so the lepers are in there. They go to

1178. one tent. They eat. They're eating

1179. eating. And they go to another tent.

  1180. They're grabbing silver and gold. Let's

1181. stick this away and go bury it

  1182. someplace. And they're having a great

  1183. time.

1184. And they do that for quite a while. And

1185. then the one says, "Wait a minute. We're

  1186. not doing good.

  1187. We're not doing right.

1188. People in the city are starving.

1189. This is a day of good news. That's what

1190. it says. A day of good news. Ain't that

1191. what the gospel is? A day of good news.

  1192. Get the connection.

1193. If we keep doing this and we don't go

1194. tell them the good news that they need

1195. to hear to save them, whether they

1196. believe us or not, we're really going to

  1197. be in trouble.

1198. So they stopped everything they were

1199. doing. No more eating. No more stuffing

1200. stuff away for letter a better time.

1201. They went and told him it. And then of

1202. course a lot of the people didn't

1203. believe it. Finally somebody went out

1204. and checked out that it was right.

1205. And one one guy was an officer in the

  1206. king's army.

1207. When he heard about all of he said,

1208. "If the Lord would open the windows of

1209. heaven, would such a thing be true,

1210. the prophet said, "You're going to see

1211. it, but you're not going to eat of it."

1212. And the people trampled him in the gate.

1213. It's an amazing story. I encourage you

  1214. to read it.

1215. That was good news. Some believed it,

1216. some didn't believe it. Those that

1217. didn't believe it uh got judged. Those

1218. that did believe it were blessed. But

1219. the lepers themselves believed it,

1220. proclaimed it, and God used it.

1221. We're like those lepers. I hate to tell

1222. you like this. We're like those lepers.

1223. We got a good news to proclaim. We know

1224. it's good news. We're not supposed to

  1225. hold back.

  1226. He's risen.

1227. Finally, the church grew up in the day

  1228. of Pentecost.

  1229. 120 people stood up

1230. affirming everything Peter was saying.

1231. And then the 11 stood up or 12 with

1232. Peter and Peter preached the gospel

  1233. in the very city

1234. that murdered him. And he did it

1235. strategically because Jesus was the

1236. general. I want you to begin at

  1237. Jerusalem

1238. and then Judea and then Samaria and then

  1239. the uttermost part

  1240. of the earth.

1241. Begin at the city that murdered me.

1242. Do you think that was easy?

  1243. That's a tough assignment,

  1244. but they did it.

1245. They did it. Why? What would give them

1246. the courage to do it? Because they knew.

1247. They kill us. They just kill us. We're

1248. going to be risen. Jesus is risen. He's

1249. going to rise us from the dead. And

  1250. we're doing it.

1251. Plus, Peter knew that he wasn't going to

1252. die. He was going to die, but not till

1253. he got old. So, he was he was safe if

1254. nobody else was. He was still young.

  1255. He stood up.

  1256. Are we standing up?

1257. Do we believe it? Do we proclaim it?

1258. Do we suffer for it?

1259. May God give us the courage as a church

1260. and as individuals to tell people who

1261. need to hear. Whether they hear or

1262. whether they forbear, as God told

1263. Ezekiel, whether they listen or they

1264. don't listen, whether they like it or

1265. they hate it, we we tell them God loves

1266. you. Jesus died for you. He rose again

1267. from the dead. There's good news and you

  1268. need to hear it.

1269. May God give us grace to do that

  1270. lovingly, persistently, and boldly.

1271. Father, we pray if there's anybody here

1272. that does not yet know the Lord, may you

1273. supernaturally work. People are born

  1274. again through the word.

1275. And may through us, may you

  1276. strategically work.

  1277. Help us, Father,

  1278. minister to others scripturally.

1279. It is the sword of the spirit.

1280. Strategically doing our best to reach as

1281. many as we can with the gospel

  1282. and supernaturally

1283. trusting God for a miracle because we

1284. have to have that miracle if anybody's

1285. ever going to get saved.

1286. That people do pass from death into life

  1287. spiritually

1288. even now. And we pray for our families,

  1289. our friends,

  1290. our neighbors,

  1291. churchgoers who are deceived

1292. by this false teaching or that false

  1293. teaching.

1294. And we pray in Jesus name. Amen.

1295. We will have service again at four

1296. o'clock today. I hope you can come to

1297. that afternoon service. Let's open our

1298. hymn books to number 326.

1299. Lord, as we go from this place,

  1300. loving you more,

  1301. trusting you more.

1302. May the power of your love and the light

  1303. of your word shine

1304. to a sin darkened world as we go from

  1305. this place.
