  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. Happy Easter, Resurrection Sunday.

  3. It's a joy to worship with you.

  4. If you have your Bibles, please turn with me to John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  5. And if you do not have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  6. We'd love to bring one over to you that you can use while you are here.

  7. John is in the New Testament.

  8. It's the fourth book in the New Testament.

  9. We're in John chapter 20, verses 1 to 31 today.

    John 20 chapter mention

  10. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  11. Heavenly Father, we have gathered to celebrate the joyous occasion of our Savior's resurrection from the dead.

  12. Just as he rose on the first day of the week,

  13. we gather now on the first day of the week to worship him, to worship you.

  14. Be pleased by our worship, Lord.

  15. And now address us as we humbly incline our ears and hearts to your word.

  16. Speak to us from your word.

  17. That your word may land upon our hearts with conviction.

  18. By the power of your Holy Spirit.

  19. That he may give us life.

  20. Life in Jesus' name.

  21. Eternal resurrection life.

  22. All to your glory.

  23. In Jesus' name we ask.

  24. Amen.

  25. Please stand if you're able for the reading of God's word from John 20, verses 1 to 31.

    John 20 chapter mention

  26. Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early while it was still dark

  27. and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

  28. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved,

  29. and said to them,

  30. They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.

  31. So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb.

  32. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

  33. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

  34. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb.

  35. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head,

  36. not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up in a place by itself.

  37. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed.

  38. For as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

  39. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

  40. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb.

  41. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain,

  42. one at the head and one at the feet.

  43. They said to her,

  44. Woman, why are you weeping?

  45. She said to them,

  46. They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.

  47. Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.

  48. Jesus said to her,

  49. Woman, why are you weeping?

  50. Whom are you seeking?

  51. Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him,

  52. Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.

  53. Jesus said to her,

  54. Mary.

  55. She turned and said to him in Aramaic,

  56. Rabboni, which means teacher.

  57. Jesus said to her,

  58. Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father.

  59. But go to my brothers and say to them,

  60. I am ascending to my Father and your Father,

  61. to my God and your God.

  62. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples,

  63. I have seen the Lord,

  64. and that he had said these things to her.

  65. On the evening of that day, the first day of the week,

  66. the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews,

  67. Jesus came and stood among them and said to them,

  68. Peace be with you.

  69. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.

  70. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

  71. Jesus said to them again,

  72. And peace be with you.

  73. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.

  74. And when he had said this,

  75. he breathed on them and said to them,

  76. Receive the Holy Spirit.

  77. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them.

  78. If you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.

  79. Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the twin,

  80. was not with them when Jesus came.

  81. So the other disciples told him,

  82. We have seen the Lord.

  83. But he said to them,

  84. Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails,

  85. and place my finger into the mark of the nails,

  86. and place my hand into his side,

  87. I will never believe.

  88. Eight days later, his disciples were inside again,

  89. and Thomas was with them.

  90. Although the doors were locked,

  91. Jesus came and stood among them and said,

  92. Peace be with you.

  93. Then he said to Thomas,

  94. Put your finger here and see my hands,

  95. and put out your hand and place it in my side.

  96. Do not disbelieve, but believe.

  97. Thomas answered him,

  98. My Lord and my God.

  99. Jesus said to him,

  100. Have you believed because you have seen me?

  101. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.

  102. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples,

  103. which are not written in the book.

  104. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,

  105. the Son of God,

  106. and that by believing,

  107. you may have life in his name.

  108. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  109. You may be seated.

  110. If I told you that someone I know who recently died has come back to life,

  111. would you believe me?

  112. Probably not.

  113. You'd probably say,

  114. Well, I'll believe it when I see it.

  115. And that's probably what I would say too if you told me the same thing.

  116. Because believe it or not,

  117. people back then,

  118. at the time of Jesus,

  119. had just as hard time believing that someone was raised from the dead as we do now.

  120. And yet,

  121. Jesus' followers believed that Jesus really was raised from the dead.

  122. And they passed that message on generation after generation after generation.

  123. And we see here in John 20 why they believe that Jesus was raised from the dead.

  124. We're going to see first how John sees and believes,

  125. and then how Mary sees and believes,

  126. and then the disciples,

  127. and then Thomas.

  128. And then finally,

  129. John's main concern in writing this book,

  130. that we might believe in Jesus,

  131. even though we have not seen him.

  132. That's the main point of this,

  133. that we should believe that Jesus is the Savior King,

  134. being the Son of God,

  135. who died and rose again,

  136. so that we may have life in his name.

  137. And to convince us,

  138. John peppers his account here with things that can only be explained by the historical bodily resurrection of Jesus.

  139. Read verse 1 with me in chapter 20.

  140. Now on the first day of the week,

  141. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early,

  142. while it was still dark,

  143. and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

  144. So Mary,

  145. it says,

  146. while it's still dark,

  147. dark early in the morning,

  148. goes to the tomb to visit Jesus.

  149. And when John tells us that it's still dark outside,

  150. he's not just telling us that the sun hasn't risen yet physically,

  151. because he uses the metaphor of light and darkness effectively throughout the entire gospel to communicate who is spiritually in the dark and who is spiritually in the light.

  152. Because Jesus said in John 8, 12,

  153. I am the light of the world.

  154. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness,

  155. but will have the light of life.

  156. So if you follow Jesus,

  157. then you have light and you have life.

  158. But if you do not follow Jesus,

  159. then you have darkness.

  160. And you have death.

  161. And so John is giving us here a hint about the state of Mary and the other disciples.

  162. Though they knew Jesus,

  163. though they admire Jesus and follow Jesus,

  164. they are still in the dark about who Jesus really is.

  165. They do not yet understand that he has been raised from the dead.

  166. So they are spiritually lost in the dark.

  167. And Jesus is about to reveal himself to them.

  168. When Mary arrives in the tomb,

  169. she discovers that the stone that had formerly blocked the tomb,

  170. the block,

  171. the entrance of the tomb has been rolled away.

  172. And,

  173. and this is important because we know from chapter 1941,

  174. that Jesus was laid in a new tomb where no one else had been laid.

  175. So Jesus had the tomb all to himself.

  176. That detail is important because it tells us that when the tomb is empty,

  177. there's only one possible explanation.

  178. Jesus has been moved because Jesus was the only one that was in that tomb.

  179. And now Jesus isn't there anymore.

  180. So this account confronts us with the reality of the empty tomb.

  181. 2,000 years ago,

  182. a man named Jesus of Nazareth was crucified.

  183. That's recorded in the history books.

  184. And then he was buried in a tomb.

  185. But then on Sunday morning,

  186. the first day of the week,

  187. his tomb was empty.

  188. What do you make of that fact?

  189. If Jesus's tomb had not been empty,

  190. all that the Jewish leaders and the Roman rulers had to do was invite the new

  191. followers of Jesus into a brief tour of his grave where Jesus's corpse still lay.

  192. But they couldn't because they didn't have the body because the tomb was empty.

  193. So intrigued by the empty tomb,

  194. Peter and John run over to verify Mary Magdalene's report.

  195. And John's the author of the book.

  196. And he often refers to himself here as the disciple whom Jesus loved.

  197. I don't think that's conceited at all.

  198. I think that's actually a very sweet way of remembering the way Jesus loved him,

  199. how he had affection for him.

  200. And that's how I think of myself and how you should think of yourself for a follower of Christ.

  201. I am one whom Jesus loves.

  202. You are one whom Jesus loves.

  203. And Peter and John start running over at the same time.

  204. But apparently Peter is a little bit out of shape because John outruns him.

  205. And Peter is lagging behind.

  206. But even though Peter is not as fast as John,

  207. Peter is much more decisive because John hesitates once he gets the tomb.

  208. He's just stooping in.

  209. And then Peter just barges right into the tomb to see what's going on.

  210. And this is what they see.

  211. He says,

  212. He saw the linen cloths lying there and the face cloth,

  213. which had been on Jesus' head,

  214. not lying with the linen cloths,

  215. but folded up in a place by itself.

  216. This is a very curious detail.

  217. It tells us several things about what has happened.

  218. It rules out several things.

  219. First, if the linen cloths are still lying there,

  220. then they didn't just move Jesus' body to a different tomb

  221. because they would have taken Jesus' body along with the linen cloths

  222. that were wrapped around him.

  223. Why would you want to touch the bloody corpse?

  224. Secondly, it rules out grave robbery,

  225. which was not uncommon in those days

  226. because why would they take the time

  227. to remove the linen cloths from Jesus' body

  228. if they really wanted to fake Jesus' resurrection?

  229. If they were there for money,

  230. then why would they leave the linen cloth,

  231. which was the most valuable item in the tomb

  232. along with the expensive spices that were in there?

  233. Third, this is not the case of someone

  234. who just kind of wakes up startled in a panic,

  235. someone who had fainted

  236. but is resuscitated by the cold, chill air of the grave.

  237. This is not what's going on

  238. because if you remember,

  239. when Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead

  240. in chapter 11 of John,

  241. he came out with his hands and his body

  242. and his face still wrapped in the linen cloths

  243. because he was confused.

  244. He had no idea what was going on.

  245. He was dead and then now he's alive

  246. and he's like, what am I doing here?

  247. And he just came right out of the tomb.

  248. But that's not what's going on.

  249. The linen cloth, the face cloth is folded.

  250. Jesus was in full perception of himself.

  251. He was raised from the dead by the power of God

  252. as he said would happen.

  253. And then he took his time,

  254. folded the linen cloths

  255. and then came out of the tomb.

  256. And so as he is looking around

  257. at what's happened inside the tomb,

  258. John is able to connect the dots

  259. and make sense of what has happened.

  260. It says in verses eight to nine,

  261. John saw and believed

  262. for as yet they did not understand the scripture

  263. that he must rise from the dead.

  264. This language of seeing and believing

  265. is a recurring theme throughout the book of John

  266. and throughout this chapter in particular.

  267. John saw the empty tomb

  268. and believed that Jesus was raised from the dead

  269. in fulfillment of the scriptures.

  270. Several Old Testament passages

  271. must have been swirling through his head

  272. at this moment.

  273. This is John's aha moment.

  274. He thinks of Hosea 6, 2,

  275. which we prophesied concerning God's people Israel.

  276. After two days, he will revive us.

  277. On the third day, he will raise us up.

  278. That verse, all of a sudden, makes more sense.

  279. John thinks, oh, Jesus represents God's people.

  280. He is the new Israel.

  281. He's raised from the dead.

  282. Or Isaiah 53, 10,

  283. which prophesied of the Messiah,

  284. the suffering servant of Yahweh,

  285. who would be crushed

  286. as a sacrificial offering for guilt.

  287. But then it says right after

  288. that his days would nonetheless be prolonged,

  289. even though he's already been crushed,

  290. and that he would triumph

  291. and divide the spoils of victory.

  292. When you read Isaiah 53,

  293. without thinking of Christ at all,

  294. it doesn't make sense.

  295. But then when you think of Christ,

  296. what happened to him,

  297. his death and resurrection,

  298. you read Isaiah 53.

  299. It reads like newspaper

  300. that was a report of Jesus

  301. that was written 700 years ahead of time.

  302. This is the point

  303. when this started to click for John.

  304. John and the disciples

  305. were not expecting Jesus

  306. to rise from the dead.

  307. They did not yet understand

  308. that what that had to happen

  309. in accordance with the scriptures.

  310. This is when they start

  311. to make the connections.

  312. So that means this is not the case

  313. of confirmation bias.

  314. This is not the case

  315. of self-fulfilling prophecy

  316. because none of them

  317. was expecting Jesus

  318. to rise from the dead.

  319. As yet, they did not understand

  320. the scripture

  321. that he must rise from the dead.

  322. So far from making up

  323. the story of Jesus' resurrection

  324. to fit their preconceptions

  325. and expectations,

  326. they only understand

  327. the fulfillment

  328. of the scriptural prophecies

  329. after they are confronted

  330. with the reality

  331. of Jesus' resurrection

  332. from the dead.

  333. And today,

  334. on Resurrection Sunday,

  335. April 9th, 2023,

  336. you too are faced

  337. with a choice.

  338. You're not here by accident.

  339. Will you let the reality

  340. of Jesus' resurrection

  341. alter your faith,

  342. change your life,

  343. or will you deny

  344. the reality of the resurrection

  345. to make it fit

  346. your worldview,

  347. your faith?

  348. Peter and John return home,

  349. and then verse 11 says

  350. that Mary stayed there

  351. weeping outside the tomb.

  352. The grief from Jesus' death

  353. is still fresh

  354. on Mary's mind,

  355. and she is distraught

  356. that she has no idea

  357. where Jesus' body is.

  358. Somebody's moved it

  359. and now she can't pay

  360. respects by visiting

  361. his tomb.

  362. But then now

  363. when she looks inside

  364. the tomb,

  365. it says in verse 12

  366. that she saw

  367. two angels in white

  368. sitting where the body

  369. of Jesus had lain,

  370. one at the head

  371. and one at the feet.

  372. And then one of the angels

  373. asked him,

  374. woman,

  375. why are you weeping?

  376. Why are you weeping?

  377. And then she tells them

  378. that they have taken away

  379. my Lord,

  380. and I do not know

  381. where they have laid him.

  382. But at that moment

  383. as she is conversing

  384. with the angel,

  385. she senses that there's

  386. somebody behind her,

  387. and she turns around

  388. and she sees Jesus.

  389. But she doesn't yet know

  390. that it's Jesus,

  391. and so she asks him

  392. the same question.

  393. Where have you,

  394. have you taken away

  395. my Lord?

  396. I do not know

  397. where they have laid him.

  398. If you have carried him away,

  399. tell me where you have laid him,

  400. and I will take him away.

  401. This is a really moving example

  402. of Mary's devotion to Jesus

  403. because even though

  404. she is convinced

  405. that Jesus is dead,

  406. she wants to be able

  407. to attend to him,

  408. take care of him,

  409. and so she weeps

  410. at the thought

  411. that she might not be able

  412. to visit his tomb.

  413. So she is talking to Jesus

  414. as if he's the gardener,

  415. saying,

  416. sir, please,

  417. tell me where you have laid Jesus.

  418. I'll take care of him.

  419. I'll take him off your hands.

  420. But then Jesus says to her,

  421. Mary,

  422. and this is Mary's aha moment.

  423. The moment she hears Jesus

  424. calls out her name,

  425. she remembers,

  426. and she knows in her very soul

  427. that the man that is addressing her

  428. at that moment

  429. is the Lord Jesus.

  430. And so she responds in Aramaic,

  431. in their mother tongue,

  432. in the language

  433. that they had often spoken

  434. to each other in,

  435. Rabboni,

  436. which means teacher.

  437. It's such an intimate moment

  438. of mutual affection.

  439. We know from Luke 8, verse 2,

    Luke 8:2

  440. that Mary Magdalene

  441. was one of those women

  442. who followed Jesus around

  443. and provided for him

  444. and his disciples

  445. out of her own means.

  446. She apparently

  447. didn't have family obligations

  448. and had the freedom

  449. to travel with Jesus

  450. and his 12 apostles.

  451. We also know

  452. from the same verse

  453. that she came from

  454. a spiritually broken background.

  455. It tells us in Luke 8, 2,

  456. that she had,

  457. that seven demons

  458. had gone out

  459. of Mary Magdalene.

  460. And I assume

  461. it was Jesus

  462. who cast the demons

  463. out from Mary.

  464. Number seven

  465. implies completeness.

  466. So she was a woman

  467. who was under

  468. complete demonic bondage,

  469. under the bondage

  470. of evil spirits.

  471. And yet Jesus

  472. delivered her.

  473. So Mary is not some

  474. prominent,

  475. unblemished individual.

  476. She has a checkered history.

  477. She was no Paul,

  478. circumcised on the eighth day,

  479. a Hebrew of Hebrews

  480. as to the law,

  481. a Pharisee

  482. as to righteousness

  483. under the law,

  484. blameless.

  485. No, Mary was not blameless.

  486. She was full of blame.

  487. She was no Jewish scholar.

  488. She was no upstanding worshiper.

  489. And yet Jesus

  490. had mercy on her.

  491. And note also

  492. that Mary was a woman

  493. in a society

  494. where women

  495. were often treated

  496. as second-class citizens.

  497. And according

  498. to the Jewish law

  499. at the time,

  500. a woman's witness

  501. was regarded

  502. as inadmissible

  503. in court

  504. because they were

  505. considered unreliable.

  506. So if Peter and John

  507. had seen

  508. the resurrected Jesus

  509. earlier,

  510. they would have been able

  511. to testify legally

  512. that they saw Jesus.

  513. But Mary

  514. could not.

  515. And yet,

  516. surely Jesus

  517. could have appeared

  518. just moments earlier

  519. when Peter and John

  520. were there.

  521. But he didn't.

  522. He waits.

  523. And the first person

  524. he shows up to

  525. is Mary.

  526. the woman

  527. who was weeping

  528. in front of his tomb,

  529. Jesus gives her

  530. the privilege

  531. of first announcing

  532. to the disciples,

  533. I have seen

  534. the Lord.

  535. Do you doubt

  536. that the Lord Jesus

  537. could have any regard

  538. for you?

  539. That he would pay

  540. any attention

  541. to you?

  542. that he would

  543. have mercy

  544. on you?

  545. If you doubt

  546. that,

  547. look at Mary Magdalene

  548. and think again.

  549. See how tenderly

  550. Jesus cares

  551. for her here,

  552. how Jesus

  553. loved her,

  554. and how Jesus

  555. loves you too.

  556. And Jesus

  557. asks you

  558. the same question

  559. that he asked Mary,

  560. whom are you seeking?

  561. Whom are you seeking

  562. this morning?

  563. Is it Jesus?

  564. Or is it someone else?

  565. Do you hear him

  566. calling your name?

  567. Mary?

  568. Jeffrey?

  569. John?

  570. Daniel?

  571. Jen?

  572. If so,

  573. turn toward him

  574. in faith.

  575. Because he will

  576. not turn you away.

  577. But Jesus'

  578. sweet reunion

  579. with Mary

  580. has to be cut short

  581. because he has

  582. a mission

  583. to give Mary.

  584. And he tells her

  585. in verse 17,

  586. do not cling to me

  587. for I have not yet

  588. ascended to the Father,

  589. but go to my brothers

  590. and say to them,

  591. I am ascending

  592. to my Father

  593. and your Father,

  594. to my God

  595. and your God.

  596. Jesus is telling Mary,

  597. hey,

  598. you don't need

  599. to cling to me yet.

  600. I'm not about

  601. to disappear.

  602. I'm not ascending

  603. just yet,

  604. but I will

  605. ascend soon.

  606. So you need

  607. to let the brothers

  608. know.

  609. But the way

  610. Jesus gives Mary

  611. this mission

  612. is amazing

  613. because we know

  614. that Jesus is telling

  615. Mary to go to his

  616. disciples because

  617. that's exactly

  618. what Mary does

  619. in the following

  620. verse,

  621. verse 18.

  622. That's what he means.

  623. But he doesn't

  624. call them his

  625. disciples here.

  626. He calls them

  627. his brothers.

  628. And this is

  629. the first time

  630. in the Gospel

  631. of John

  632. where Jesus

  633. refers to his

  634. disciples

  635. as his

  636. brothers.

  637. He tells them,

  638. I'm ascending

  639. to my Father

  640. and your Father,

  641. to my God

  642. and your God.

  643. Jesus is God's

  644. only begotten Son.

  645. He's the only one

  646. who shares

  647. the Father's

  648. divine nature.

  649. There's no one

  650. else like Jesus

  651. in the whole world,

  652. in the whole human

  653. history.

  654. and Jesus says

  655. that he's going

  656. to my Father

  657. and your Father.

  658. That's a staggering

  659. statement.

  660. Jesus is speaking

  661. of the Christian's

  662. adoption.

  663. Romans 8.15

  664. explains that those

  665. who put their faith

  666. in Jesus

  667. receive the spirit

  668. of adoption

  669. as sons

  670. so that we cry

  671. out to God

  672. as Abba,

  673. Father.

  674. That means

  675. the same privileges

  676. that Jesus enjoys

  677. as the Son of God,

  678. the only Son of God,

  679. his access

  680. to the Father,

  681. the favor

  682. of the Father,

  683. the sharing

  684. in the Father's rule

  685. and in his kingdom,

  686. the eternal

  687. heavenly inheritance

  688. as the heir

  689. to the throne,

  690. they are all

  691. ours in Jesus

  692. because we have

  693. now been adopted

  694. into God's

  695. forever family.

  696. I don't know

  697. if you've ever

  698. seen those

  699. adoption surprise

  700. videos.

  701. You guys know

  702. what I'm talking

  703. about?

  704. It's the videos

  705. where like an orphan

  706. who's been living

  707. with foster parents

  708. for a long time

  709. first finds out

  710. that she is

  711. now going to be

  712. adopted

  713. by her foster parents

  714. and then she just

  715. breaks down

  716. in grateful,

  717. happy tears.

  718. or the video

  719. of a father,

  720. of a foster parent,

  721. father who's been

  722. caring for a foster

  723. child for a while

  724. who is then surprised

  725. with the letter

  726. or legal request,

  727. formal request

  728. by his daughter

  729. asking him

  730. to adopt her

  731. as his own

  732. and then the father

  733. just trembles

  734. all over

  735. and hugs the girl

  736. and loves on her.

  737. I don't know why

  738. but almost always,

  739. every time I've seen

  740. these videos,

  741. it's like this

  742. huge burly man

  743. with tattoos

  744. all over his body

  745. that looks like

  746. he's never shed a tear

  747. in his whole life

  748. but as soon as he

  749. hears the request

  750. from his daughter,

  751. can you please adopt me

  752. as your daughter?

  753. Can you give me

  754. your name?

  755. He just starts

  756. crying like a little baby.

  757. I love those videos

  758. because not only

  759. because they remind me

  760. of my daughters

  761. but because they remind me

  762. of our father's love.

  763. how he adopted us

  764. into his family.

  765. Christian brothers

  766. and sisters,

  767. you are not

  768. an orphan.

  769. you are no longer

  770. an illegitimate child

  771. with no lineage

  772. or family

  773. or name.

  774. You have been adopted

  775. into God's own family.

  776. You have

  777. his name.

  778. You have

  779. his inheritance.

  780. Does that make your heart

  781. sing with praise?

  782. When you repented

  783. and believed in Jesus

  784. as your Lord

  785. and made a public

  786. profession

  787. of your faith

  788. by getting baptized,

  789. you received

  790. the Holy Spirit

  791. who is in your heart,

  792. who is sealing you

  793. and indwelling you

  794. and crying out,

  795. God's,

  796. my child,

  797. my daughter,

  798. my son.

  799. You're taking on

  800. Christ's name

  801. when you are baptized

  802. in the name

  803. of the Father

  804. and the Son

  805. and the Holy Spirit.

  806. So as you conduct

  807. yourself here on earth,

  808. don't ever forget

  809. who you are.

  810. Remember

  811. your venerable heritage.

  812. Remember

  813. whose name you bear

  814. and remember

  815. the Father's

  816. care for you.

  817. After Mary's witness

  818. to the disciples,

  819. Jesus himself

  820. appears among them.

  821. It says in verses

  822. 19 to 20,

  823. on the evening

  824. of that day,

  825. the first day

  826. of the week,

  827. the doors being locked

  828. where the disciples

  829. were for faith,

  830. and the fear of the Jews,

  831. that Jesus came

  832. and stood among them

  833. and said to them,

  834. Peace be with you.

  835. When he had said this,

  836. he showed them

  837. his hands and his side

  838. and the disciples

  839. were glad

  840. when they saw the Lord.

  841. Jesus is able

  842. to walk through doors

  843. as it seems,

  844. which shows that

  845. his resurrected body

  846. is not of the exact

  847. same kind

  848. as our perishable bodies.

  849. And as Jesus

  850. stands among them,

  851. he says to them,

  852. Peace be with you.

  853. This is the disciples'

  854. aha moment.

  855. Jesus pronounces

  856. peace over them

  857. three times

  858. in this passage.

  859. Peace be with you.

  860. And in the Bible,

  861. the word peace

  862. doesn't merely refer

  863. to a calm

  864. or a lack

  865. of disturbance

  866. or a quietness

  867. that comes after

  868. the noise

  869. dies down.

  870. It refers to something

  871. far deeper than that.

  872. The word shalom,

  873. the word for peace,

  874. conveys a sense

  875. of wholeness,

  876. the sense of fitting

  877. into God's order

  878. and plan,

  879. being restored

  880. to right relationship

  881. with God.

  882. That's where you have peace.

  883. And that's a blessing

  884. that is way beyond

  885. our deserts.

  886. We deserve

  887. to have enmity with God,

  888. to be his enemies.

  889. We deserve

  890. God's condemnation

  891. and judgment.

  892. We should be objects

  893. of God's fiery wrath

  894. because we are sinners,

  895. full of hatred,

  896. selfishness,

  897. greed,

  898. envy,

  899. idolatry,

  900. lust,

  901. unrighteous anger,

  902. pride.

  903. But instead,

  904. Jesus offers us

  905. peace.

  906. Peace.

  907. peace.

  908. This is only possible

  909. because Jesus

  910. has died on the cross

  911. for the sins

  912. of his people

  913. and he has

  914. satisfied God

  915. the Father's

  916. righteous wrath

  917. against sinners.

  918. It's because Jesus

  919. has done

  920. what we could not do.

  921. It's because

  922. on Good Friday,

  923. Jesus said

  924. on the cross,

  925. it is finished.

  926. That now,

  927. on Resurrection Sunday,

  928. Jesus can say,

  929. peace be with you.

  930. So even when your life

  931. is surrounded by chaos,

  932. there is a peace

  933. that transcends

  934. understanding

  935. that can rest

  936. in your heart

  937. in Jesus.

  938. Do you have

  939. that peace with God?

  940. Believe in Jesus,

  941. the Savior King,

  942. the Son of God,

  943. who died and rose again,

  944. then you can have

  945. that peace with God.

  946. Jesus continues

  947. to speak to his disciples.

  948. Again,

  949. he says in 21-22,

  950. peace be with you.

  951. As the Father

  952. has sent me,

  953. even so I am sending you.

  954. And when he has said this,

  955. he breathed on them

  956. and said to them,

  957. receive the Holy Spirit.

  958. The word send

  959. is a key word

  960. in the Gospel of John

  961. as well.

  962. God the Father,

  963. he says again and again

  964. that he sent Jesus.

  965. Jesus is the sent one.

  966. And now Jesus sends us out

  967. in that same cascade

  968. of sending from Father

  969. to the Son

  970. to the church

  971. in the power

  972. of the Holy Spirit

  973. and we are sent out

  974. to bear witness,

  975. to extend the peace

  976. that we have received

  977. from God to others.

  978. Because humanity

  979. can never know peace

  980. apart from being reconciled

  981. to God

  982. and having peace

  983. with God in Jesus.

  984. But Jesus knows

  985. that this mission

  986. is too much for us

  987. to handle

  988. in our own strength.

  989. He says Jesus breathed on them

  990. and he says to them,

  991. receive the Holy Spirit.

  992. This breathing

  993. of the Holy Spirit

  994. recalls Genesis 2-7

  995. when God,

  996. after creating

  997. the life,

  998. the creatures,

  999. he breathes life

  1000. into them

  1001. so that they become

  1002. living creatures.

  1003. It's reminiscent

  1004. of Ezekiel 37

  1005. when God commands

  1006. Ezekiel to prophesy

  1007. to the wind

  1008. for the breath

  1009. to come

1010. and fill the dry bones

1011. so that dead dry bones

  1012. are raised up

  1013. and filled with life

  1014. and become an army.

  1015. The breath of God

  1016. has generative power.

  1017. It creates.

  1018. And so here,

  1019. as Jesus breathed

  1020. on his disciples,

  1021. he is making them

  1022. a new creation,

  1023. giving them a foretaste

  1024. of what will happen

  1025. when the Holy Spirit

  1026. comes down in power

  1027. at Pentecost

  1028. in Acts 2.

  1029. The presence

  1030. of the Holy Spirit

  1031. is yet another reality

  1032. that confronts us

  1033. and confirms to us

  1034. that Jesus did indeed

  1035. rise from the dead.

  1036. Throughout the New Testament,

  1037. the powerful presence

  1038. of the Holy Spirit

  1039. serves to assure us

1040. that we are God's people

  1041. and that we belong

  1042. to his family.

  1043. That's why in Acts 19,

    Acts 19:2

  1044. verse 2,

  1045. when Paul is trying

  1046. to verify

1047. that a group of people

  1048. are actually genuine

  1049. believers in Christ,

  1050. this is the question

  1051. that he asks them.

  1052. Did you receive

  1053. the Holy Spirit

  1054. when you believed?

  1055. The Spirit of God

  1056. is invisible,

1057. but that does not mean

  1058. we cannot know him

  1059. or feel him.

  1060. On an overcast day,

  1061. you will not see

  1062. the sun anywhere,

  1063. and yet you know

1064. that the sun is there

  1065. because you see

  1066. everything around it

  1067. by its light.

  1068. In the same way,

  1069. you might not see

  1070. the wind,

  1071. which is invisible,

1072. but yet you can know

1073. that the wind is there

  1074. by the streaming flag

  1075. outside

1076. or by the swaying branches.

  1077. Likewise,

  1078. we can know

  1079. that the Spirit

  1080. is there

  1081. by his unmistakable

  1082. effect on our lives.

  1083. According to

  1084. 1 Corinthians 2,

  1085. 14,

  1086. we cannot even understand

  1087. the spiritual things

  1088. of God

  1089. apart from the help

  1090. of the Holy Spirit.

  1091. Was there a time

  1092. in your life

  1093. when the truths

  1094. of God's words

  1095. seemed strange

  1096. and foreign

  1097. and untrue,

  1098. and yet one day

  1099. you're reading the Word

  1100. and it seems

  1101. it strikes you

  1102. that this is true,

  1103. that this is good,

1104. and that this is beautiful.

  1105. That's not something

  1106. you accomplished.

  1107. That's the work

  1108. of the Holy Spirit.

  1109. Romans 8,

  1110. 14 to 17 says,

  1111. the Spirit of God

  1112. bears witness

  1113. with our spirit

  1114. that we are children

  1115. of God.

  1116. Do you know

  1117. this moment

  1118. that you are

  1119. indeed a child

  1120. of God,

  1121. that you are

  1122. a beloved son

  1123. or daughter

  1124. of our Heavenly Father

  1125. and you have

  1126. peace in your heart

  1127. knowing that you

  1128. sense his love?

  1129. That's not

  1130. your own accomplishment.

  1131. That's the work

  1132. of the Holy Spirit.

  1133. Acts 4, 31

  1134. tells us that

  1135. when we are filled

  1136. with the Holy Spirit

  1137. we speak the Word

  1138. of God

  1139. with boldness.

  1140. Have you ever had

  1141. and felt faith

  1142. and courage

  1143. rising up inside you

  1144. that enabled you

  1145. to share the Word

  1146. of God with others

  1147. in spite of all

  1148. your fears

  1149. and apprehensions?

  1150. That's the work

  1151. of the Holy Spirit.

  1152. Have you ever noticed

  1153. that you have grown

  1154. however incrementally

  1155. over the years

  1156. since coming to faith

  1157. in Christ

  1158. in love,

  1159. joy,

  1160. peace,

  1161. patience,

  1162. kindness,

  1163. goodness,

  1164. faithfulness,

  1165. gentleness,

  1166. and self-control?

  1167. That's the work

  1168. of the Holy Spirit

  1169. because those are

1170. fruit of the Holy Spirit.

  1171. If you are not

  1172. acquainted with the work

  1173. of the Holy Spirit

  1174. then you must believe

1175. that Jesus is the Savior King

1176. who died and rose again

1177. and then he will send

1178. the Holy Spirit to you.

  1179. And because the church

  1180. is the gathering

  1181. of believers

  1182. who have been indwelled

  1183. by the very Spirit

  1184. of God,

  1185. they have the God-given

  1186. authority as his representatives

  1187. to forgive

  1188. or withhold forgiveness.

  1189. That's what verse 23

  1190. is speaking of.

  1191. It's the same authority

  1192. that God gave

  1193. to his apostles

  1194. and by extension

  1195. to his church

  1196. in Matthew 16

  1197. and Matthew 18

1198. the keys of the kingdom

  1199. that whatever we bind

  1200. on earth

1201. shall be bound in heaven

  1202. and whatever we lose

  1203. on earth

  1204. shall be loosed

  1205. in heaven.

  1206. This is an amazing

  1207. responsibility

  1208. that as the church

  1209. that God's forgiveness

  1210. or withholding

  1211. of forgiveness

  1212. in heaven

  1213. is tied to

  1214. our forgiveness

  1215. and withholding

  1216. of forgiveness.

1217. This is why the church

  1218. has the authority

  1219. to baptize

  1220. which we will do

  1221. shortly.

  1222. Receive new members

1223. into the family of God.

  1224. they're extending

  1225. God's forgiveness

  1226. proclaiming that

  1227. that person is forgiven

  1228. and when that happens

  1229. it happens in heaven.

  1230. God does that.

  1231. This is why

  1232. your membership

1233. in a local church matters.

  1234. Yes,

  1235. the church

  1236. is a universal fellowship

  1237. of believers

  1238. that transcends

  1239. all geographic borders

  1240. but the universal church

1241. manifests in a real way

  1242. in a local embodied

  1243. gathering of believers

  1244. in local churches.

  1245. Jesus.

  1246. And so far

  1247. we've seen

  1248. how John saw

  1249. and believed

  1250. Mary saw

  1251. and believed

  1252. and how the disciples

  1253. saw and believed

  1254. but it turns out

1255. that one of the disciples

  1256. was left out.

  1257. Thomas was not there

  1258. when Jesus first

  1259. appeared to them

  1260. and even though

  1261. the other disciples

  1262. tell him

1263. we have seen the Lord

  1264. Thomas is skeptical

  1265. he says

1266. hey unless I see him

  1267. with my own eyes

  1268. and touch him

  1269. with my own hands

1270. I will not believe him.

  1271. I know there's

  1272. there are several people

  1273. I think

  1274. maybe many people

  1275. here in our building

  1276. who share

  1277. Thomas' skepticism.

1278. He's the kind of guy

  1279. who thinks logically

1280. and relies on empirical evidence

  1281. to assess situations.

  1282. He's the scientist

  1283. and he says

1284. unless I see his hands

  1285. the marks of nails

  1286. and place my finger

1287. into the mark of the nails

  1288. I will not believe.

1289. And the amazing thing is

1290. Jesus could have spurned him

  1291. he could have said

  1292. well then forget it.

  1293. But he's so gracious

  1294. he accommodates Thomas

1295. and appears to him again

  1296. in shows himself

  1297. in a way

  1298. that he will believe

  1299. and understand.

1300. It says eight days later

  1301. verse 26 to 28

  1302. Jesus appeared

  1303. stood among them

1304. he says peace be with you

1305. and he singles out Thomas

  1306. he said to Thomas

  1307. put your finger here

  1308. and see my hands

1309. and put out your hand

1310. and place it in my side

  1311. do not disbelieve

  1312. but believe

  1313. and then Thomas

  1314. answered him

  1315. my Lord

  1316. and my God

  1317. Thomas and many others

  1318. would have never believed

  1319. Jesus

  1320. had they not seen

  1321. him themselves

1322. but they did see Jesus

  1323. and they told

  1324. other people about it

  1325. and then they told

  1326. other people about it

  1327. and so on

  1328. down to our

  1329. very generation

  1330. and here we are

  1331. reminding each other

  1332. once again

  1333. that Jesus really did

  1334. rise from the dead

  1335. if Christ

  1336. had not risen

  1337. from the dead

  1338. Christianity

  1339. would have been

  1340. like a ship

  1341. parked at the dock

  1342. that can never

  1343. take off

  1344. without an engine

  1345. Christianity

  1346. would have been

  1347. dead in the water

  1348. but Christianity

  1349. grew into

  1350. the largest religion

  1351. in the world

  1352. it has spread

  1353. into every continent

  1354. Asia

  1355. Europe

  1356. North America

  1357. South America

  1358. Africa

  1359. Oceania

  1360. and even

  1361. Antarctica

  1362. but how

  1363. how did a religion

  1364. whose central tenet

  1365. is that a man

  1366. who is claimed

  1367. to be God

  1368. died and was

  1369. raised from the dead

  1370. ever get off

  1371. the ground

  1372. because it really

  1373. happened

  1374. Thomas came to

  1375. that same

  1376. conclusion

  1377. and he exclaims

  1378. my Lord

  1379. and my God

  1380. and that's no easy

  1381. thing for a faithful

  1382. Jew to say

  1383. the Jews have been

  1384. worshipping

  1385. Yahweh

  1386. and saying that

  1387. there is no

  1388. no God

  1389. but Yahweh

  1390. the Lord is one

  1391. for thousands

  1392. of years

  1393. and yet

  1394. confronted with

  1395. the reality

  1396. of Jesus

  1397. resurrection

  1398. Thomas dispenses

  1399. with his

  1400. theological qualms

  1401. and skeptical

  1402. instincts

  1403. and proclaims

  1404. that Jesus

  1405. is God

  1406. the son of God

  1407. and this is

  1408. the kind of God

  1409. we get to serve

  1410. the mark

  1411. of the great love

  1412. that Jesus

  1413. showed us

  1414. is forever

  1415. stamped upon

  1416. his human body

  1417. in his wounds

  1418. even in his

  1419. glorified

  1420. resurrected body

  1421. Jesus has nail

  1422. wounds in his

  1423. hands

  1424. he has the

  1425. wound in his

  1426. side where the

  1427. Roman soldiers

  1428. had speared him

  1429. through to make

  1430. sure that he's

  1431. dead

  1432. Jesus carries

  1433. with himself

  1434. these wounds

  1435. as an eternal

  1436. reminder of his

  1437. undying and

  1438. unchanging love

  1439. for us

  1440. what God in the

  1441. world was

  1442. wounded for you

  1443. what God in the

  1444. world died

  1445. for you

  1446. only Jesus

  1447. there's no

  1448. better person

  1449. to call my

  1450. Lord and my

  1451. God

  1452. Edward

  1453. Shilito a

  1454. Christian minister

  1455. in England

  1456. during the

  1457. first world

  1458. war wrote a

  1459. beautiful poem

  1460. entitled Jesus

  1461. of the scars

  1462. and part of it

  1463. goes like this

  1464. Lord Jesus

  1465. by thy scars

  1466. we claim thy

  1467. grace

  1468. the other

  1469. gods were

  1470. strong but

  1471. thou wast

  1472. weak

  1473. they rode

  1474. but thou

  1475. didst stumble

  1476. to a throne

  1477. but to our

  1478. wounds

  1479. only God's

  1480. wounds can

  1481. speak

  1482. and not

  1483. a God

  1484. has wounds

  1485. but thou

  1486. alone

  1487. our

  1488. Jesus

  1489. alone

  1490. has wounds

  1491. our

  1492. Jesus

  1493. alone

  1494. loved you

  1495. to his

  1496. death

  1497. and

  1498. therefore

  1499. Jesus

  1500. is uniquely

  1501. worthy

  1502. to be

  1503. worshipped

  1504. to be

  1505. loved

  1506. so

  1507. who do

  1508. you say

  1509. that Jesus

  1510. is today

  1511. do you

  1512. confess him

  1513. as my

  1514. Lord

  1515. and my

  1516. God

  1517. John

  1518. Mary

  1519. the

  1520. disciples

  1521. and Thomas

  1522. all saw

  1523. and believed

  1524. and they

  1525. bore witness

  1526. to us

  1527. and they

  1528. bore

  1529. and John

  1530. bears witness

  1531. in this book

  1532. so that we

  1533. who have not

  1534. seen him

  1535. might

  1536. believe

  1537. and that's

  1538. his purpose

  1539. it says in

  1540. verses 30

  1541. to 31

  1542. now Jesus

  1543. did many

  1544. other signs

  1545. in the

  1546. presence

  1547. of the

  1548. disciples

  1549. which are

  1550. not

  1551. written

  1552. in this

  1553. book

  1554. but these

  1555. are written

  1556. so that

  1557. you may

  1558. believe

  1559. that Jesus

  1560. is the

  1561. Christ

  1562. the son

  1563. of God

  1564. and that

  1565. by believing

  1566. you may

  1567. have life

  1568. in his

  1569. name

  1570. Jesus promised

  1571. to give us

  1572. life

  1573. and life

  1574. abundantly

  1575. God

  1576. God

  1577. it's

  1578. it's when

  1579. you believe

  1580. in Jesus

  1581. the risen

  1582. Christ

  1583. that

  1584. you are

  1585. adopted

  1586. into

  1587. God's

  1588. family

  1589. it's

  1590. when you

  1591. believe

  1592. in Jesus

  1593. that

  1594. you have

  1595. the love

  1596. that you're

  1597. assured

  1598. of the love

  1599. of our

  1600. Father

  1601. Heavenly

  1602. Father

  1603. by the

  1604. Holy Spirit

  1605. who indwells

  1606. you

  1607. this is the

  1608. king

  1609. that we

  1610. get to

  1611. serve

  1612. and remember

  1613. on

  1614. Resurrection

  1615. Sunday

  1616. have you

  1617. tasted

  1618. and seen

  1619. the abundant

  1620. life in

  1621. Jesus

  1622. my hope

  1623. and prayer

  1624. for you

  1625. this morning

  1626. is that

  1627. every single

  1628. one of you

  1629. will leave

  1630. this place

  1631. saying

  1632. Jesus

  1633. is my

  1634. Lord

  1635. and my

  1636. God

  1637. let's

  1638. pray

  1639. together

  1640. Jesus

  1641. you are

  1642. my

  1643. God

  1644. you are

  1645. my

  1646. Lord

  1647. I love

  1648. you

  1649. I give

  1650. my

  1651. life

  1652. to you

  1653. it is

  1654. our

  1655. joy

  1656. and honor

  1657. to serve

  1658. you

  1659. so help

  1660. us Lord

  1661. to be

  1662. faithful

  1663. witnesses

  1664. pointing

  1665. people to

  1666. the risen

  1667. Lord

  1668. and all

  1669. those who

  1670. do not

  1671. yet have

  1672. faith

  1673. please

  1674. give the

  1675. gift of

  1676. faith

  1677. today

  1678. that they

  1679. too may

  1680. profess

  1681. you

  1682. confess

  1683. you

  1684. as

  1685. their

  1686. Lord

  1687. and

  1688. Savior

  1689. in

  1690. Jesus

  1691. name

  1692. we pray

  1693. amen

  1694. God

  1695. and

  1696. we
