  1. Please turn with me in your Bibles to Exodus chapter 27.

    Exodus 27 chapter mention

  2. It's good to be with you this morning.

  3. I'm going to preach from several passages all dealing with the same subject matter,

  4. 27.1-21, 31-21, and 34-38, 37.25-29, and 38.1-20.

  5. But because the second half of it is the implementation,

  6. the actual carrying out of the instructions in the first half,

  7. and it's almost identical word for word.

  8. I'm not going to read it out loud right now.

  9. I will incorporate it into my sermon, throughout the course of the sermon.

  10. But I will read 27.1-21 and 31-21.

  11. So let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  12. Father, we have gathered in your Son's name,

  13. and we humble ourselves before you.

  14. waiting to hear from you.

  15. As you always do, speak to us in and from your word

  16. to exalt your Son, Jesus,

  17. and to cheer our souls with the consolations that we have in him.

  18. Meet with us now in Jesus' name, we ask.

  19. Amen.

  20. If you would please stand, if you are able,

  21. for the reading of God's word from Exodus 27, 1-21,

  22. and Exodus 30, 1-21.

  23. Amen.

  24. You shall make the altar of acacia wood,

  25. five cubits long and five cubits broad.

  26. The altar shall be square, and its height shall be three cubits,

  27. and you shall make horns for it on its four corners.

  28. Its horns shall be of one piece with it,

  29. and you shall overlay it with bronze.

  30. You shall make pots for it to receive its ashes,

  31. and shovels and basins and forks and firepans.

  32. You shall make all its utensils of bronze.

  33. You shall also make for it a grating,

  34. a network of bronze,

  35. and on the net you shall make four bronze rings

  36. at its four corners.

  37. And you shall set it under the ledge of the altar

  38. so that the net extends halfway down the altar.

  39. And you shall make poles for the altar,

  40. poles of acacia wood,

  41. and overlay them with bronze.

  42. And the poles shall be put through the rings

  43. so that the poles are on the two sides of the altar

  44. when it is carried.

  45. You shall make it hollow with boards,

  46. as it has been shown you on the mountain,

  47. so shall it be made.

  48. You shall make the court of the tabernacle.

  54. but the hooks of the pillars

  55. and their fillets shall be of silver.

  56. And likewise,

  58. there shall be hangings a hundred cubits long,

  59. its pillars twenty,

  60. and their bases twenty,

  61. of bronze.

  62. But the hooks of the pillars

  63. and their fillets shall be of silver.

  64. And for the breadth of the court

  65. on the west side

  66. there shall be hangings for fifty cubits

  67. with ten pillars and ten bases.

  68. The breadth of the court

  69. on the front to the east

  70. shall be fifty cubits.

  74. yarns and fine twine linen embroidered with needlework he shall have four pillars and with

  75. them four bases all the pillars around the court shall be filleted with silver their hooks shall

  76. bronze the length of the court shall be 100 cubits the breadth 50 and the height five cubits with

  77. hangings of fine twine linen and bases of bronze all the utensils of the tabernacle for every use

  78. and all its pegs and all the pegs of the court shall be of bronze you shall command the people of israel

  79. that they bring to you pure beaten olive oil for the light that a lamp may regularly be set up to burn

  80. in the tent of meeting outside the veil that is before the testimony aaron and his son shall

  81. tend it from evening to morning before the lord it shall be a statute forever to be observed

  82. throughout their generations by the people of israel now turn a couple pages to chapter 30

  83. with me and i'm going to read verses 1 to 21 you shall make an altar on which to burn incense you

  84. shall make it of acacia wood a cubit shall be its length and a cubit its breadth it shall be square

  85. and two cubits shall be its height its horns shall be of one piece with it you shall overlay it with

  86. pure gold its top and around its size and its horns and you shall make a molding of gold around it and

  87. you shall make two golden rings for it under its molding on two opposite sides of it you shall make

  88. them and they shall be holders for poles with which to carry it you shall make the poles of acacia wood

  89. and overlay them with gold and you shall put in it put in put it in front of the veil that is above

  90. the ark of the testimony in front of the mercy seat that is above the testimony where i will meet with

  91. you and aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it every morning when he dresses the lamps he shall burn it

  92. and when aaron sets up the lamps at twilight he shall burn it a regular incense offering before the lord

  93. throughout the generations you shall not offer unauthorized incense on it or a burnt offering or a grain

  94. offering and you shall not pour a drink offering on it aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a

  95. year with the blood of the sin offering of atonement he shall make atonement for it once in the year

  96. throughout your generations it is most holy to the lord the lord said to moses when you take the

  97. census of the people of israel then each shall give a ransom for the life to the lord for his life to

  98. the lord when you number them and there be we that there be no plague among them with when you number

  99. them each one who is numbered in the census shall give this half a shekel according to the shekel of

  100. the sanctuary the shekel is 20 gareth half a shekel as an offering to the lord everyone who is numbered

  101. in the census from 20 years old and upward shall give the lord's offering the rich shall not give more

  102. and the poor shall not give less than the half shekel when you give the lord's offering to make

  103. atonement for your lives you shall take the atonement money from the people of israel and shall give it

  104. for the service of the tent of meeting that it may bring the people of israel to remembrance before the

  105. lord so as to make atonement for your lives the lord said to moses you shall also make a basin of bronze

  106. with its stand of bronze for washing you shall put it between the tent of meeting and the altar

  107. and you shall put water in it with which aaron and his son shall wash their hands and their feet

  108. when they go into the tent of meeting or when they come near the altar to minister to burn a food

  109. offering to the lord they shall wash with water so that they may not die they shall wash their hands

  110. and their feet so that they may not die it shall be a statute forever to them even to him and to his

  111. offspring throughout their generations this is god's holy and authoritative word please be seated

  112. we live in a in an egalitarian society where people enjoy historically unprecedented levels of

  113. equality of course there's some kind of hierarchy and leadership in every society but generally speaking

  114. we can speak to whomever we want and expect to be treated as well as everyone else so this idea of

  115. being unworthy of being unworthy of someone or being unworthy to be at some place is something that's

  116. foreign to most of our day-to-day experience so let's do a thought experiment for a moment imagine that you

  117. are attending a red carpet event and you are in sweaty pajamas in in in a flip-flops that are kicked with dirt

  118. and dust and dust and you didn't have a chance to shower so you stink and you have a bedhead

  119. okay and now imagine how you would feel in that place you'd feel completely out of place you would

  120. feel unworthy to be there you would be desperate for a shower you'd feel desperate for designer dress

  121. designer suit maybe some fame and celebrity go with this way you can feel like you can actually be there

  122. and you would maybe even also want thick layers of makeup to cover up your blemishes

  123. so if you feel so exposed and so helpless and unworthy in the presence of celebrities

  124. who are merely human if you feel so exposed and insecure in front of the rolling cameras

  125. and bright lights of a red carpet event how much more unworthy are we to be in the presence of god

  126. himself the infinite creator of heaven and the earth who with his all-seeing eyes dwells in

  127. unapproachable light god who is a consuming fire himself how do we meet with him how do we dwell in his presence

  128. that's the problem that this passage addresses starting in chapter 25 where the lord's instructions

  129. to moses and the israelites for the construction of the tabernacle began the tabernacle has been referred

  130. to exclusively as the dwelling the english word tabernacle just means tent but it's translating a hebrew word

  131. that means dwelling place the dwelling place of god god's residence but notice in chapter 27 20 to 21

  132. which we read that the tabernacle starts to be called something else for the first time

  133. it says you shall command the people of israel that they bring to you pure beaten olive oil for the light

  134. that lamp may be regularly be set to burn in the tent of meeting outside the veil that is before the testimony

  135. aaron and his son shall tend to it from evening to morning this is the first time that the expression

  136. tent of meeting is used in the book of exodus to refer to the tabernacle so from exodus 25 to 27 19 the

  137. tabernacle has exclusively been called the dwelling 19 times but starting here in 27 20 until 30 38

  138. it is exclusively called the tent of meeting a total of 14 times so when describing the most holy place

  139. and the holy place within the tabernacle proper its golden fire furnishings the ark of the testimony the

  140. atonement cover the golden lamp stand and the table of the presence and the covering and the veils the

  141. tabernacle is called the dwelling to emphasize its function as god's residing place his dwelling place

  142. but when describing the priests who facilitate the sacrifices and the bronze altar for atonement sacrifices

  143. and for and the bronze base and for the washing inside the courtyard the tabernacle is called the

  144. tent of meeting to emphasize its function as the mediating place there and the meeting place between god and his people

  145. so in describing this function of the tabernacle this passage teaches us this important main point that we can

  146. meet with god because we have been atoned by the blood of christ and washed by the water of the spirit

  147. we're going to look at four different points we're going to start with god's holiness and the tent of

  148. meeting first by looking at the descriptions of the enclosure of the outer courtyard in 27 9 to 21

  149. in 38 9 to 20 so the tabernacle proper the dwelling place of god was further enclosed by a series of

  150. interconnected curtains made with fine twine linen these curtains were connected to the pillars made of

  151. acacia wood or overlaid with bronze and then but their capitals at the top and the hooks and the fillets

  152. fillets or fillet we think of fillet of meat but it's just a strip of metal that's decorating the top of

  153. the column the capital the fillet and those the top part is silver that's on the outside these pillars

  154. and the enclosure forms a large rectangle around the tabernacle the longer side is north and south

  155. it's a hundred cubits which is about 150 feet long and then the two shorter sides are uh 50 cubits

  156. west and east and they're about 75 feet long and so if you want to imagine a tennis court the larger

  157. enclosure is about almost exactly twice as large as the tennis court both in its length and its breadth

  158. so that's the the outer enclosure of the courtyard and on the east side there is a 30 feet long screen

  159. at the center that's where the entrance is at the gate of the enclosure is and we have highlighted this

  160. a number of times over the last few weeks that entrance to the east is significant because the

  161. entrance to the garden of east was garden of eden was on the east and the entrance to the later temple

  162. will also be in the east the entrance to god's dwelling place always is faces an easterly direction where

  163. the sun rises like christ was raised from the dead but not only that it reminds us also of the fact

  164. that the israelites and all of us by extension are sinful people who live east of eden as john steinbeck

  165. put it in exile from the presence of god from the garden of eden and and so the material that the gate

  166. the screen is made of also reinforces the sense of distance uh 27 16 and 38 18 both tell us that the

  167. screen for the gate of the court was embroidered with needlework in blue and purple and scarlet yarns

  168. in fine twine linnet uh it's made of the same material uh of as the veil that separates the most

  169. holy place from the holy place the only thing that's different is that it doesn't have the cherubim

  170. worked into it so it's not god it doesn't represent god's heavenly dwelling place it in the holy of

  171. holies but it still has the all the royal markings of these colored yarns i mentioned to you a few weeks

  172. ago that the colored yarns were very expensive in those days because they didn't have synthetic dyes

  173. so the dyes had to be extracted manually from the glands of sea mollusks and plant barks and leaves and

  174. berries and precious metals and minerals so you'd have to scar the land to find the right plants and or

  175. wade through the sea to collect the right clams and snails that can be pressed and used to produce

  176. the dyes for these yarns and so these were very uncommon artifacts the scarlet yarn blue and purple

  177. yarns were uncommon materials of royalty and luxury so you would not see these kinds of materials in the

  178. common people's houses the same is true for the fine twined linen which the all the rest of the curtain

  179. of the outer enclosure is made up of it's not made of typical linen made from the fiber of beaten

  180. flax which which was coarse uh it's it's it's made of the same material but this is very fine it has

  181. fine twine linen of the silkiest variety in genesis 41 42 when pharaoh appoints joseph as second in

  182. command in all of egypt guess what he puts on joseph he puts on him a linen fine linen garments of fine

  183. linen like the curtain that's around the enclosure so again this is royalty material so then the entire

  184. 450 foot perimeter is made up of rich materials like this and if we're in the israelite shoes

  185. we wouldn't marvel at it it's if you were children you'd probably want to go up and touch it wow look

  186. at how smooth that is look at how fine that material is and on top of that it's pretty imposing the

  187. curtains are 7.5 feet tall five cubits that means even some of the tallest current and former nba players

  188. like yaoming or taco fall who are 7.6 feet tall are not tall enough to look over it on flat foot

  189. which means none of us have any chance of looking over it and so only the top most part of the

  190. tabernacle would be visible from the outside so if you consider these details we can see that the

  191. tabernacle is not exactly a picture of approachability or accessibility the tabernacle was not meant to be

  192. a common ordinary place that anyone can casually walk into and stroll around like a public park

  193. this distance between us and god is also communicated through the gradation of holiness we see in the

  194. design of the tabernacle i've mentioned this to you before that that all the furnishings in the

  195. courtyard are made of bronze there the pillars on the outside are made of bronze but the top of the

  196. pillar the capitals are made of silver but then when you get to the tabernacle the tent inside proper

  197. the the pillars are made of silver but the not the the whole pillar the bottom of the pillars are made

  198. of silver but the top is made of gold the rest of the pillars made of gold so it's like the tabernacle

  199. has three levels or almost layers like three stories even though it's flattened on level ground it's like

  200. their stories the the the top of the outer enclosure fits to the the outside of the tent the bottom of

  201. that and then once you go furthest in inside the most holy place everything is gold you don't you see

  202. nothing but gold and so there's this gold level silver level bronze level it's kind of like how i feel

  203. when i when i uh ever travel on flights it's like the you you're waiting to board and there's this the gold

  204. level people who get to board before everybody else and they get to sit in the best seats and they get

  205. to eat the best food and get the best drink and and they have their own bathrooms and uh you know and

  206. then there's the silver level people i don't know what they get and then there's the bronze level people

  207. and then there are people like me right and so there's this distance between you and those people

  208. and and that's exactly what this tabernacle is supposed to convey there's the gold there's the silver

  209. there's the bronze and then there's you right i i want us to feel this gap between god and us you

  210. know not just in a theoretical way but in a visceral way at an emotional level before we move on to the

  211. next point because we can't appreciate what god does to bridge that gap unless we first feel that that

  212. chasm that we can't ever cross on our own in esther 4 11 when mordecai asks esther for help saying we

  213. are about to be exterminated as jews say state sanctioned pogrom they're about to kill us all

  214. and he asks esther pleased with her to go and talk to the king because she's the queen

  215. and then esther tells mordecai i can't just go into the king i have to be summoned if i go without

  216. being summoned the only sentence is death unless the king graciously extends the scepter to show mercy

  217. that's the kind of that's the kind of respect and honor that an earthly king gets how much more

  218. the divine king

  219. you can't go to a king whenever you want you have to be summoned you have to be worthy

  220. and so we are no members of the royal family we're no queen we're common folk dirty sinful

  221. how are we supposed to enter the tent of meeting to meet with god you and i are not worthy it doesn't

  222. matter how many followers you have on social media it doesn't matter that you're the ceo of a fortune 500

  223. company it doesn't matter that you have a phd and a postdoc and a post postdoc from harvard and mit

  224. it doesn't matter that your iq is off the charts or that your eq is off the charts it doesn't matter

  225. that you're a pretty good person who's never had a scandalous sin in your life you and i are not worthy

  226. and that's the reality between yahweh the lord god the holy one and us there is a gaping chasm

  227. that's impossible this is where the furnishings of the courtyard come into the picture

  228. and we're on to the second point our sinfulness and the altar of atonement

  229. the word atonement is seldom used outside of church nowadays but it means something similar

  230. to the word reparations which i'm sure you've heard more frequently it refers to the making of amends

  231. for some kind of injury or wrong done to another and atonement it covers over sin and offense

  232. it's a payment that satisfies divine justice chapter 30 verses 11 to 16 speak of this please turn there

  233. with me chapter 30 verses 11 to 16 when moses conducts the census of the people of israel

  234. everyone 20 years old and above is required to pay half a shekel as an offering to the lord

  235. and later in exodus 38 25 to 26 there is an actual accounting of all the silver that was collected

  236. through this census tax and we are told that all the men over 20 years old were 603 550 there was

  237. that many of them and each of them paid a half a shekel resulting in a hundred talents and 1775

  238. shekels of silver it's about 7601 pounds of silver in our in our rendering reckoning another passage in

  239. numbers one also mentions a census and it it has the same number of males 603 550 so it's probably

  240. referring back to the same census that exodus 30 speaks of and that's illuminating because in numbers

  241. it specifically mentions that this census was intended to count those from 20 years old and upward

  242. every man able to go to war in israel so census here it serves a military purpose in part to count the

  243. possible number of conscripts into the army which is the reason why the women and children are not

  244. counted this is the israelite equivalent of the selective service system have you guys gotten letters

  245. from the selective service system i guess well maybe i'm too old to get that now but um when you it's

  246. the it's the agency in the u.s government that keeps track of all eligible u.s citizens who are to

  247. who can be conscripted to serve in the army in a military draft the lord says to moses in chapter 30

  248. verse 12 read with me when you take the census of the people of israel then each shall give a ransom

  249. for his life to the lord when you number them that there be no plague among them when you number them

  250. and then he continues in verses 15 to 16 the rich shall not give more and the poor shall not give

  251. less than the half shekel when you give the lord's offering to make atonement for your lives you shall

  252. take the atonement money from the people of israel and shall give it for the service of the tent of

  253. meeting that it may bring the people of israel to remembrance before the lord so as to make

  254. atonement for your lives this is a very fascinating passage why does every israelite man of military age

  255. need to make an atonement for his life and then give a ransom for his life to the lord when being

  256. counted in the census why is there a threat of a plague breaking out among them when a census is

  257. conducted the words ransom and atonement which is repeated throughout this passage give us clues about

  258. the nature of this payment what it does what its purpose is these men have been numbered to go to war

  259. later on in the conquest of the promised land their lives are essentially forfeit which is why they need a

  260. ransom payment this is their way of acknowledging that their lives are ultimately in the lord's hands

  261. the census tax is simultaneously a tribute and petition it's a tribute to the king acknowledging

  262. their subjection to his authority we're in your hands we're at your disposal it's also a petition

  263. asking the king to remember them with favor and protect and spare them so the silver collected through

  264. the census tax will be used for the construction of the tent of meeting so that it may bring it says if

  265. bring the people of israel to remembrance before the lord so as to make atonement for their lives

  266. since the rich man's life is not more valuable than the poor man's life

  267. and vice versa all pay the same half shekel no more and no less but there's still more meaning to this

  268. census tax there's this threat of a plague breaking out when the israelite men are being numbered

  269. there are a number of censuses taken throughout the old testament and here in exodus the census is

  270. taken before the construction of the tabernacle and then later similarly in second chronicles 2

  271. a census is taken before the construction of the temple before solomon builds the temple in numbers 1

  272. and 26 a census is taken to number the soldiers before the conquest of canaan and in numbers 4

  273. the levites were specifically omitted from the census are counted for the service within the tabernacle

  274. because they don't serve in the military there's only one census in all of the old testament that

  275. does not serve a specific divinely sanctioned purpose and that's recorded in second samuel 24 and

  276. first chronicles 21 when king david orders a census of israel's men eligible for military service

  277. without god's express approval or command and guess what happens god punishes israel with a plague

  278. so that 70 000 men of israel die this account appears to be connected related to this passage in exodus

  279. 30 why is god so upset with david taking a census he's the king after all we can infer the reason from

  280. what his military commander joab who is charged with taking this actual census says to david in objection

  281. he says this may the lord add to his people a hundred times as many as they are are they not my lord the

  282. king all of them my lord's servants why then should my lord require this why should it be a cause of guilt

  283. for israel for kings and nations taking a census is a way of estimating their power

  284. it's their way of sticking out their chest and flexing their muscles

  285. it's this is why it's their way of saying look at what vast army i have and my command don't mess with me

  286. and this is why taking a census is inherently offensive to god it's an act of hubris it's an act of

  287. independence and rebellion rather than humble submission to god in duranami 7 god specifically

  288. said that to hit to the israelites that he that he chose them as his treasure treasure of possession

  289. and set his love upon them out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth quote not because

  290. they were more in number than other people for they were the fewest of all the peoples

  291. god chose them because he said his love on them because he's keeping the promises he had made to

  292. their forefathers he did not choose them because they were a powerful numerous people because they

  293. deserved his affection so by counting the men eligible for military service david showed that his

  294. heart had strayed away from god that he believed in strength in numbers more than strength in the lord

  295. he trusted in his own hosts rather than in the lord of hosts

  296. this is another reason why exodus 30 requires the payment of atonement money

  297. when a census is being taken that there will be no plague among them when you number them

  298. what are some ways that you have taken a census in your own life

  299. do you look at your bank statements and investments with satisfaction and put your trust in them

  300. rather than in the lord

  301. do you look at your list of friends or look around at your family and put your trust in them

  302. rather than in the lord do you count your genealogy or your academic pedigree

  303. do you take stock of your talents how much smarter you are than others how much prettier you are than

  304. others how much stronger and more athletic you are than others how much cooler or funnier you are than

  305. others how much more liked you are than others stop counting those trivial numbers

  306. what truly matters is do you have god is god on your side rather are you on god's side

  307. for the foolishness of god is wiser than men and the weakness of god is stronger than men

  308. christ jesus is for us wisdom from god righteousness and sanctification and redemption

  309. let the one who boasts boast in the lord

  310. not in our own senses

  311. at the bottom of sin bottom of it sin is simply this it's displacing god with something or someone

  312. else in our lives and all of us have done that by taking various censuses in our lives

  313. and for that reason all of us need atonement

  314. but the payment of this atonement money only applied to men eligible for military service

  315. so the half shekel census text was a one-time only prescription

  316. to collect silver in part for the construction of the tabernacle

  317. so the more general atonement is needed and that's where the bronze altar in the courtyard comes in

  318. the fact that god commanded moses and israelites to build

  319. a bronze altar might be surprising to some of you

  320. if you remember god's specific instructions regarding altars in the book of the covenant in exodus 20

  321. there god said this you have seen for yourselves that i have talked with you from heaven

  322. you shall not make gods of silver to be with me nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold

  323. an altar of earth you shall make for me and sacrifice on it your burned offerings and your peace offerings

  324. your sheep and oxen if you make an altar of stone you shall not build it of hewn stones

  325. for if you wield your tool on it you profane it

  326. so note there's an interesting phrase in verse 20

  327. you have seen for yourselves

  328. that i have talked with you from heaven

  329. it's very interesting

  330. what have they seen

  331. not god's face

  332. but god's voice

  333. that god speaks

  334. so this is why there is a prohibition

  335. in the bible of making carved images or idols for worship

  336. because god does not rule through images

  337. the pagans thought that gods

  338. their gods dwelled these images and idols

  339. and that they bowed down before them and worshiped them

  340. but god rules always our god through his word

  341. by speaking to us

  342. that's why they're not supposed to make images

  343. and that's why they're also not supposed to make altars

  344. that are meant to displace god

  345. and to represent god in a sense

  346. and so that's why when they're building an altar for sacrifice

  347. they must only build it out of earth

  348. out of dirt

  349. and if they are to use stones

  350. they are to use hewn

  351. they're not to use hewn stones

  352. only stones as they naturally exist in nature

  353. so that they are not

  354. they don't wield human tools on it

  355. put artistic representations on it

  356. it's just a common ordinary altar

  357. because you're not supposed to relate to god

  358. through the images

  359. but through his word

  360. by offering sacrifices to him

  361. in obedience to his word

  362. and so then this bronze altar

  363. in the courtyard of the tabernacle

  364. is an exception to that

  365. because this is where the priests of god themselves

  366. will regulate the worship

  367. they will be there to prevent idolatry

  368. and they will offer sacrifices

  369. according to the biblical prescriptions

  370. and so this is the one exception to that

  371. but outside of that

  372. any altar that they build

  373. for example later

  374. in Deuteronomy 27.4

  375. Moses commands Israelites

  376. to build an altar

  377. when they cross over the Jordan

  378. and there they are told

  379. specifically to obey that command

  380. to build either an earthen altar

  381. or an altar with stones

  382. that are not hewn

  383. that are uncut stones

  384. so that command still applies

  385. in other places

  386. it's on this bronze altar

  387. that many sacrifices and offerings

  388. would be offered to god

  389. Leviticus 1-7

  390. tells us about five different kinds

  391. of sacrifices and offerings

  392. that would be offered

  393. on this bronze altar

  394. first is the burnt offering

  395. which is the most costly kind of offering

  396. because it entailed the burning whole

  397. of the entire animal sacrifice

  398. with nothing left remaining

  399. as a pleasing aroma to the lord

  400. the second kind of offering

  401. is the grain offering

  402. which is an offering of the first fruits

  403. thanking god for the harvest

  404. third is the peace offering

  405. featuring an animal sacrifice

  406. that was actually consumed

  407. by the worshippers and the priests

  408. in the presence of god

  409. enjoying fellowship with god

  410. so sometimes it's called

  411. the fellowship offering

  412. the fourth is the sin offering

  413. which served to purify people

  414. from the defiling effects

  415. of unintentional sins

  416. and then fifth is the guilt offering

  417. which was an atoning sacrifice

  418. for guilt incurred by causing damage

  419. or loss to god or to your neighbor

  420. for sins that require restitution

  421. making restitution

  422. so all these offerings and sacrifices

  423. are ultimately fulfilled in jesus

  424. because we know from hebrews 10

  425. that these sacrifices

  426. were merely a shadow

  427. of the good things to come

  428. instead of the true form

  429. of those realities

  430. these sacrifices

  431. that the israelites offered

  432. could not

  433. as the bible says

  434. atone for sin

  435. in an ultimate sense

  436. they only pointed

  437. to the once for all sacrifice

  438. that jesus would make

  439. on the cross

  440. by dying for our sins

  441. and all five

  442. of these sacrifices

  443. point to that

  444. four of them

  445. feature a ram

  446. an unblemished ram

  447. which points to jesus

  448. who is the passover lamb

  449. unblemished lamb

  450. sacrifice for us

  451. and then the fifth

  452. the grain offering

  453. or the peace offering rather

  454. is

  455. the grain offering

  456. also represents us

  457. jesus bringing us

  458. the first fruits of god

  459. sorry

  460. and

  461. there's still other ways

  462. that the bronze altar

  463. point to jesus

  464. and this is

  465. it term

  466. in terms of its

  467. physical appearance

  468. it's square

  469. 7.5 foot square

  470. and it stands

  471. 4.5 feet tall

  472. and it's placed

  473. right inside

  474. the courtyard enclosure

  475. so it's the first thing

  476. you see as you enter

  477. the courtyard

  478. and it would dominate

  479. your view

  480. as you enter it

  481. it's an unmistakable

  482. message

  483. no human being

  484. may approach god

  485. safely

  486. unless there's sacrifice

  487. unless there is

  488. atonement

  489. it's made of wood

  490. which might seem

  491. counterintuitive

  492. for an altar

  493. because it'll burn

  494. but it's

  495. remember it's

  496. overlaid with bronze

  497. to protect it

  498. and the

  499. one very significant

  500. feature of it

  501. is that this altar

  502. has horns

  503. on its four corners

  504. that's one piece

  505. with the altar itself

  506. and

  507. there's a practical

  508. purpose for this

  509. psalm 118

  510. 27

  511. tells us that

  512. the sacrifices

  513. were tied

  514. using the horns

  515. on the four corners

  516. maybe to stabilize it

  517. or maybe it makes it

  518. easier to lift it

  519. in and out

  520. of the hollow

  521. altar

  522. but there's

  523. an even more

  524. important

  525. way more important

  526. symbolic meaning

  527. to this

  528. because animals

  529. often use their

  530. horns to demonstrate

  531. their strength

  532. and to establish

  533. dominance

  534. in the ancient world

  535. horns came to

  536. symbolize strength

  537. and power

  538. and victory

  539. so

  540. in Daniel 7

  541. he sees in his

  542. vision a picture

  543. of a beast

  544. with ten horns

  545. and we are told

  546. that that represents

  547. ten kings

  548. so

  549. horns can represent

  550. powerful kings

  551. psalms frequently

  552. feature prayers

  553. to God

  554. asking God

  555. to cut off

  556. the horns

  557. of the wicked

  558. but to exalt

  559. or lift up

  560. the horns

  561. of the righteous

  562. but

  563. even more

  564. the horn

  565. is often associated

  566. in scripture

  567. with the Lord

  568. God himself

  569. or with his

  570. anointed one

  571. with his Messiah

  572. the king

  573. so Psalm 18

  574. 2 cries out

  575. the Lord

  576. is my rock

  577. and my fortress

  578. and my deliverer

  579. my God

  580. my rock

  581. in whom

  582. I take refuge

  583. my shield

  584. and the horn

  585. of my salvation

  586. my stronghold

  587. in 1 Samuel 2

  588. Hannah prays

  589. for the day

  590. when the Lord

  591. will break

  592. his adversary

  593. to pieces

  594. and give strength

  595. to his king

  596. and exalt

  597. the horn

  598. of his anointed

  599. Psalm 130

  600. to 17

  601. prophesies

  602. of a day

  603. when the Lord

  604. will make

  605. a horn

  606. to sprout

  607. for David

  608. and finally

  609. in Luke

  610. 1 68

  611. to 69

  612. shortly before

  613. Jesus' birth

  614. Zachariah

  615. prophesies

  616. of his birth

  617. blessed be

  618. the Lord

  619. God of Israel

  620. for he has

  621. visited

  622. and redeemed

  623. his people

  624. and has

  625. raised up

  626. a horn

  627. of salvation

  628. for us

  629. in the house

  630. of his servant

  631. David

  632. so Jesus

  633. is

  634. the horn

  635. of salvation

  636. who shatters

  637. the enemies

  638. of God

  639. to save

  640. God's people

  641. Jesus'

  642. very name

  643. means the Lord

  644. is salvation

  645. it's no wonder

  646. then that in

  647. Exodus 29 12

  648. and Leviticus 4 7

  649. God commands

  650. that after you

  651. make a sacrifice

  652. a sin offering

  653. you are supposed

  654. to daub

  655. its blood

  656. on the four

  657. horns

  658. of the altar

  659. representing

  660. the blood

  661. that Jesus

  662. sheds

  663. for us

  664. to save us

  665. and it is

  666. because of this

  667. what the horn

  668. represents

  669. the horn

  670. of salvation

  671. that there

  672. is a practice

  673. that is

  674. attested

  675. throughout

  676. the Old Testament

  677. that when

  678. people sin

  679. and the evildoers

  680. are about to be

  681. punished for their sin

  682. if they are repentant

  683. and they acknowledge

  684. their guilt

  685. they can go into

  686. the tabernacle

  687. the courtyard

  688. and they can grab

  689. hold of the horns

  690. of the altar

  691. as a way of

  692. pleading for amnesty

  693. asking for mercy

  694. from the king

  695. who is about

  696. to punish them

  697. so this is what

  698. Adonijah does

  699. in 1st King

  700. 150

  701. he is guilty

  702. of sedition

  703. he was trying

  704. to usurp

  705. the kingdom

  706. from right

  707. under the noses

  708. of King Solomon

  709. but he is caught

  710. and his party

  711. is dispersed

  712. and he knows

  713. he is about

  714. to be cut down

  715. to death

  716. so he runs

  717. into the tabernacle

  718. he grabs hold

  719. of the horns

  720. of the bronze altar

  721. and Solomon

  722. because of that

  723. spares him

  724. at least for that time

  725. and so

  726. that is what

  727. Jesus represents

  728. for us

  729. remember that

  730. Jesus is the horn

  731. that sinners

  732. can run to

  733. to grab hold of

  734. and cling to

  735. death

  736. is hounding

  737. you

  738. perhaps even

  739. this very day

  740. because you are

  741. a sinner

  742. you are guilty

  743. of sedition

  744. you have rebelled

  745. against God

  746. our rightful king

  747. by serving other gods

  748. and living for yourself

  749. you will surely

  750. be cut down

  751. you will surely

  752. die

  753. you will surely

  754. be condemned

  755. to hell

  756. but there is a refuge

  757. you can run to

  758. you can run

  759. into the quarry

  760. you can grab hold

  761. of the horns

  762. of the altar

  763. you can cling

  764. to Jesus

  765. whose blood

  766. was poured out

  767. for us

  768. as an atoning sacrifice

  769. so that we might

  770. be forgiven

  771. and reconciled

  772. to God

  773. maybe you feel

  774. like running away

  775. maybe you feel

  776. that guilt

  777. and shame

  778. that's not reason

  779. to run away

  780. from God

  781. that's reason

  782. to run to him

  783. to run to Jesus

  784. say I have no salvation

  785. apart from you

  786. Lord Jesus

  787. I cling to your

  788. horn of salvation

  789. it's then

  790. and only then

  791. that you will find

  792. mercy

  793. let's now look

  794. at the other

  795. furnishing within

  796. the courtyard

  797. the bronze basin

  798. for washing

  799. Exodus 30

  800. 17 to 21

  801. tells us that

  802. this bronze basin

  803. stood between

  804. the tent of meeting

  805. and the bronze altar

  806. and this is where

  807. Aaron and his sons

  808. the priests

  809. were to wash

  810. their hands

  811. and feet

  812. before ministering

  813. at the altar

  814. so that they don't die

  815. later in 38-8

  816. when this bronze

  817. altar basin

  818. is actually built

  819. it gives us

  820. one additional

  821. tidbit of detail

  822. that's fascinating

  823. it says that

  824. the bronze basins

  825. was made

  826. quote

  827. from the mirror

  828. of the ministering

  829. woman who ministered

  830. in the entrance

  831. of the tent of meeting

  832. so even though

  833. only Aaron

  834. and his sons

  835. served as priests

  836. within the tabernacle

  837. there were women

  838. who served

  839. in the courtyard

  840. of the tabernacle

  841. isn't that amazing

  842. I think that's

  843. even at this stage

  844. of redemptive history

  845. we see a clear example

  846. that women

  847. were intimately

  848. and indispensably

  849. involved in the ministry

  850. of God's dwelling place

  851. men and women

  852. had distinct roles

  853. but they both had

  854. indispensable roles

  855. and it's the same

  856. in the church today

  857. which is the new

  858. covenant temple

  859. of God

  860. though only certain

  861. men serve

  862. as elders

  863. of the church

  864. there are many

  865. women who are

  866. vitally involved

  867. in the ministry

  868. of God's house

  869. and it's also special

  870. that it's there

  871. these ministering

  872. women's contribution

  873. of their bronze mirrors

  874. that is used

  875. to build this bronze basin

  876. at that time

  877. in those days

  878. they didn't use

  879. clear reflective glass

  880. as mirrors

  881. they used bronze

  882. and so they offer up

  883. their bronze mirrors

  884. which makes

  885. this bronze basin

  886. instead of using

  887. their mirrors

  888. to beautify themselves

  889. they offer up

  890. their bronze mirrors

  891. so that God's people

  892. the priests

  893. can be purified

  894. it's a very special way

  895. to give of yourself

  896. to God

  897. and so when you enter

  898. through the enclosure

  899. into the courtyard

  900. of the tabernacle

  901. so you'd first see

  902. the bronze altar

  903. it's imposing

  904. fixture there

  905. and then you go past

  906. that and you'll see

  907. the basin

  908. the bronze basin

  909. which is like

  910. a sea of water

  911. the basin's

  912. later equivalent

  913. when Solomon

  914. builds his temple

  915. is actually called

  916. the sea

  917. it's called

  918. the bronze sea

  919. and so once you

  920. pass through that water

  921. you go into

  922. the tabernacle proper

  923. which is the

  924. dwelling place of God

  925. so imagine

  926. for a moment

  927. in the bird's eye view

  928. what this progression

  929. looks like

  930. going further

  931. and further in

  932. to the tabernacle

  933. does that remind you

  934. of anything

  935. you've seen

  936. so far in Exodus

  937. when the Israelites

  938. were slaves in Egypt

  939. they had to sacrifice

  940. the Passover lamb

  941. an unblemished lamb

  942. then they had to pass

  943. through the Red Sea

  944. right

  945. and then

  946. in the wilderness

  947. they were guided

  948. by the pillars

  949. of fire and smoke

  950. and fed with manna

  951. the bread from heaven

  952. and inside the holy place

  953. what do you find

  954. the lamp stand

  955. and the bread

  956. of the presence

  957. now and then

  958. you go further in

  959. and then you find

  960. the most holy place

  961. the very footstool of God

  962. where God dwells

  963. with his people

  964. and that's exactly

  965. what God promised

  966. what happened

  967. when the Israelites

  968. entered the promised land

  969. where God will dwell

  970. with them

  971. so the tabernacle

  972. you go with the sacrifice

  973. cross the water

  974. into the wilderness

  975. where you are fed

  976. and guided by the light

  977. and fire and smoke

  978. pillar

  979. and you go into

  980. the promised land

  981. where God dwells with you

  982. the tabernacle

  983. is a reenactment

  984. of Israel's salvation history

  985. and that too

  986. is ultimately fulfilled

  987. by Jesus

  988. because Jesus

  989. makes his once for all

  990. atoning sacrifice

  991. on the cross

  992. and dies for us

  993. and when Jesus died

  994. it says in John 1934

  995. that a Roman soldier

  996. just pierced his side

  997. with the spear

  998. just to make sure

  999. that he is dead

  1000. and then at once

  1001. there came out

  1002. blood and water

  1003. from his side

  1004. and John's there

  1005. making an intentional

  1006. theological point

  1007. in John 7 38-39

  1008. Jesus said

  1009. whoever believes in me

  1010. out of his heart

  1011. will flow rivers

  1012. of living water

  1013. and now this

1014. he said about the spirit

  1015. John tells us

  1016. the image of water

  1017. is frequently used

  1018. throughout the Bible

1019. to refer to the rinsing

  1020. the reviving

  1021. and the renewing

  1022. and regenerating activity

  1023. of the Holy Spirit

  1024. so when Jesus

  1025. dies on the cross

  1026. and makes satisfaction

  1027. atonement for our sins

  1028. the spirit of God

  1029. is symbolically

  1030. poured out

  1031. in the water

  1032. that pours out

  1033. from his heart

  1034. out of his heart

  1035. flows rivers

  1036. of living water

  1037. which is a fulfillment

  1038. of the prophecies

  1039. in Zechariah 12 and 13

  1040. that the one

1041. whom that they have pierced

  1042. will save them

1043. and that he will become

  1044. for them

  1045. quote

  1046. a fountain

  1047. that cleanses them

  1048. from sin

  1049. and uncleanness

  1050. so Jesus

  1051. is the one

  1052. who was pierced

  1053. and who became

  1054. the fountain

  1055. from whom the spirit

  1056. of God

  1057. comes gushing out

  1058. to cleanse us

  1059. from all sin

  1060. there's a

  1061. I don't know

  1062. if you guys

  1063. have dreams often

  1064. but there's a widely

  1065. observed

  1066. attested dream

  1067. throughout the world

  1068. and it's one

  1069. of people feeling

  1070. dirty

  1071. and then washing

  1072. themselves

  1073. again and again

  1074. in the dream

  1075. this kind of dream

  1076. sometimes occurs

  1077. when people feel

  1078. like they are

  1079. in a morally

  1080. compromising situation

  1081. when they feel

  1082. they lack

  1083. integrity

  1084. or honesty

  1085. and this is

  1086. the spiritual reality

  1087. for all of us

  1088. we are morally

  1089. spiritually

  1090. grubby people

  1091. and we need

  1092. the water

  1093. of the Holy Spirit

  1094. to cleanse us

  1095. to be

  1096. have you ever

  1097. tried washing

  1098. yourselves

  1099. without water

  1100. you could use

  1101. soap all you want

1102. I mean you could use

  1103. put hand sanitizer

  1104. all over your body

  1105. if you want to

  1106. you're not going to

  1107. feel clean at all

  1108. you're going to feel

  1109. more achy

  1110. if you want

  1111. a real wash

  1112. you need

  1113. water

  1114. no matter

  1115. what you do

  1116. to try to

  1117. wash yourself

  1118. with your own

  1119. good works

  1120. you cannot

  1121. make yourself

  1122. clean

  1123. you need

  1124. the water

  1125. of the Holy Spirit

  1126. to rain on you

1127. to pour out on you

  1128. to cleanse you

  1129. and that's what's

  1130. represented in the

  1131. washing of baptism

1132. and receive the Holy Spirit

1133. if you repent of your sins

  1134. and believe in Jesus

  1135. and make a public

  1136. profession of your faith

  1137. and get baptized

  1138. you will receive

  1139. the Holy Spirit

  1140. and that brings me

  1141. to my short

  1142. final point

  1143. our holiness

  1144. and the living sacrifice

  1145. I mentioned to you

  1146. earlier that

  1147. all five types

  1148. of offerings

  1149. were offered

  1150. on this bronze altar

  1151. in the courtyard

  1152. but there is one

  1153. particular offering

  1154. that is specifically

  1155. especially associated

  1156. with this bronze altar

  1157. and that is

  1158. the burnt offering

  1159. throughout the book

  1160. of Exodus

  1161. the bronze altar

  1162. is repeatedly called

  1163. the altar of burnt

  1164. offering

  1165. Leviticus 1 9

  1166. specifies

  1167. the burnt offering

  1168. was the most costly

  1169. kind of offering

  1170. because you burn up

  1171. the entire animal

  1172. and leave nothing behind

  1173. and it's

  1174. as a pleasing aroma

  1175. to the Lord

  1176. and in this way

  1177. burnt offerings

  1178. signify that

  1179. God's people

  1180. are to be

  1181. completely

  1182. consecrated to him

  1183. totally devoted

  1184. to him

  1185. and that idea

  1186. is connected

  1187. to the altar

  1188. of incense

  1189. which is a furnishing

  1190. inside the holy place

  1191. the golden incense

  1192. immediately before

  1193. the veil

  1194. that separates

  1195. the most holy place

  1196. from the holy place

  1197. we intentionally

  1198. didn't talk about that

  1199. when we were talking

  1200. about furnishings

  1201. inside the holy place

  1202. because the Bible

  1203. intentionally

  1204. puts it together

  1205. with the bronze altar

  1206. and associates

  1207. those two things

  1208. theologically

  1209. just like the

  1210. bronze altar

1211. just like the bronze altar

  1212. the golden altar

  1213. of incense

  1214. in the holy place

  1215. is square

  1216. it too

  1217. has four horns

  1218. on its corners

  1219. and it too

  1220. is supposed to be

  1221. the horns

  1222. are supposed to be

  1223. daubed with the blood

  1224. of the sin offering

  1225. and in the same

  1226. it's just the same

  1227. as the bronze altar

  1228. it says in the

  1229. bronze altar

  1230. you were supposed

  1231. to offer

  1232. a burnt offering

  1233. twice a day

  1234. once in the morning

  1235. once at twilight

  1236. in the same way

  1237. there's supposed

  1238. to be incense

  1239. offered on this

  1240. golden altar

  1241. in the holy place

  1242. twice a day

  1243. once in the morning

  1244. and once at twilight

1245. at exactly the same time

  1246. so whenever the priests

  1247. offer the burnt offering

  1248. at the bronze altar

  1249. an incense

  1250. is being offered

  1251. on the altar

  1252. golden altar

  1253. of incense

  1254. so do you see

  1255. the connection there

  1256. it's the burnt offering

  1257. is entirely

  1258. burned up to God

  1259. to be a pleasing

  1260. aroma to God

  1261. and then the pleasing

  1262. aroma ascends

  1263. to the very

  1264. dwelling place of God

  1265. in the form

  1266. of the smoke

  1267. and the incense

  1268. in the golden altar

  1269. that's what's happening

  1270. there

  1271. and this aroma

  1272. would have been

  1273. so pleasant

  1274. it says in

  1275. 30, 34, 35

  1276. it says to take

  1277. sweet spices

  1278. stacti and

  1279. anica and

  1280. galbanum

  1281. sweet spices

  1282. with pure frankincense

  1283. and make an incense

  1284. blended as by

  1285. the perfumer

  1286. seasoned with salt

  1287. pure and holy

  1288. this was a distinct

1289. smell that was to be

  1290. associated with

  1291. God's dwelling place

  1292. only

  1293. no one else

  1294. was to use

  1295. this specific

  1296. combination

  1297. of spices

  1298. and perfumes

  1299. and this represents

  1300. God's lavish

  1301. hospitality

  1302. toward us

  1303. imagine a family

  1304. Christmas dinner

  1305. with the

  1306. resinous

  1307. scent

  1308. of

  1309. pine trees

  1310. just imagine that

  1311. and the cinnamony

  1312. aroma

  1313. of mulled wine

  1314. and gingerbreads

  1315. you smell that

  1316. when you walk

  1317. into a house

  1318. you feel at home

  1319. you feel loved

  1320. you feel cared for

  1321. that's what

  1322. these smells

  1323. evoke

  1324. as the priests

  1325. are ministering

  1326. in the holy place

  1327. God's hospitality

  1328. God's

  1329. welcome

  1330. God's fellowship

  1331. with his people

  1332. and where does

  1333. that aroma

  1334. come from

  1335. it comes from

  1336. the sacrifices

  1337. that we make

  1338. it comes from

  1339. the burnt offerings

  1340. as people

  1341. who have been

  1342. sanctified

  1343. by the Holy Spirit

  1344. we ourselves

  1345. get to offer

  1346. up sacrifices

  1347. of worship

  1348. to God

  1349. and it ascends

  1350. to the very heavens

  1351. where God dwells

  1352. that's what Paul

  1353. is speaking of

  1354. in Romans 12

  1355. I appeal to you

  1356. therefore

  1357. by the mercies

  1358. of God

  1359. to present your bodies

  1360. as a living sacrifice

  1361. Revelation 5

  1362. and 8

  1363. speak of

  1364. how the prayers

  1365. of the saints

  1366. when we pray

  1367. that they come up

  1368. to God

  1369. as smoke

  1370. of the incense

  1371. from the golden

  1372. censer

  1373. and an altar

  1374. as a pleasing

  1375. aroma to God

  1376. Hebrews 13

  1377. 15

  1378. says that

  1379. continually

  1380. offer up

  1381. sacrifice

  1382. of praise

  1383. to God

  1384. that is

  1385. the fruit

  1386. of lips

  1387. that acknowledge

  1388. his name

  1389. so when we

  1390. acknowledge God

  1391. and praise him

  1392. with our lips

  1393. when we cling

  1394. to him

  1395. and depend

  1396. on him

  1397. in prayer

  1398. when we live

  1399. a life of faith

  1400. and obedience

  1401. instead of being

  1402. conformed to the

  1403. patterns of this world

  1404. we are offering up

  1405. a living sacrifice

  1406. to God

  1407. that's how we

  1408. ought to live

  1409. and remember

  1410. this is a burnt

  1411. offering

  1412. you don't offer

  1413. a part of it

  1414. you offer the

  1415. whole thing

  1416. all of you

  1417. your whole life

  1418. every minute

  1419. of it

  1420. everything you

  1421. have

  1422. head to toe

  1423. all that you

  1424. are

  1425. completely

  1426. devoted

  1427. to him

  1428. because that's

  1429. what God

  1430. deserves

  1431. and that

  1432. comes up

  1433. to him

  1434. as a

  1435. pleasing

  1436. aroma

  1437. is there

  1438. a greater

  1439. privilege

  1440. than that

  1441. to offer

  1442. yourself up

  1443. wholly

  1444. to God

  1445. and say

  1446. I am

  1447. yours

  1448. it's when

  1449. we do

  1450. that

  1451. that we

  1452. also bear

  1453. witness

  1454. to others

  1455. as Paul

  1456. says in

  1457. 2nd Corinthians

  1458. we become

  1459. the aroma

  1460. of Christ

  1461. to God

  1462. among those

  1463. who are

  1464. being

  1465. saved

  1466. and among

  1467. those

  1468. who are

  1469. perishing

  1470. let's pray

  1471. that we

  1472. would be

  1473. that

  1474. as a

  1475. church

  1476. together

  1477. yes

  1478. father

  1479. we do

  1480. offer up

  1481. our whole

  1482. selves

  1483. to you

  1484. we want

  1485. to be

  1486. devoted

  1487. to you

  1488. we want

  1489. to be

  1490. a whole

  1491. not partial

  1492. a whole

  1493. burnt offering

  1494. we want

  1495. to be

  1496. a pleasing

  1497. aroma

  1498. to you

  1499. father

  1500. that we

  1501. can be

  1502. a pleasing

  1503. aroma

  1504. in your

  1505. living room

  1506. that we

  1507. can please

  1508. you with

  1509. our worship

  1510. that we

  1511. can please

  1512. you with

  1513. our prayers

  1514. that we

  1515. can please

  1516. you with

  1517. our obedience

  1518. God is

  1519. too much

  1520. of a privilege

  1521. for us

  1522. to bear

  1523. help us

  1524. never to

  1525. lose sight

  1526. of it

  1527. take our

  1528. lives

  1529. Lord

  1530. and let

  1531. it be

  1532. consecrated

  1533. all to

  1534. you

  1535. Lord

  1536. in Jesus

  1537. name we

  1538. pray

  1539. amen
