  1. Well, I'm very thankful that we could be

  2. here this evening. We're going back to

  3. the book of Jeremiah.

  4. You please open your Bibles to Jeremiah

  5. 19.

  6. I'd remind you, which we've said before

  7. last week, Jeremiah 18:1, 19, and 20 are

    Jeremiah 18:1

  8. is all one section. It's all one

  9. section. And the section very much

  10. begins with this phrase, the word of the

  11. Lord came to Jeremiah.

  12. The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah

  13. from the Lord. That covers chapter

  14. 17, 18,

  15. and excuse me, that covers 18, 19, and

  16. 20.

  17. 18, 19, and 20. So, we have chapter

  18. divisions, but those chapter divisions

  19. are really introducing us to

  20. a section that should be looked at as a

  21. whole. Uh, and uh, and we've already

  22. looked at chapter 18, Jeremiah's first

  23. visit to the pottery shop

  24. where the potter was making pottery.

  25. Now, he's going back to the pottery shop

  26. to buy something

  27. and he's buying it. so he can break it.

  28. He buys it and then breaks it.

  29. It's expensive to be a prophet. You got

  30. to, you know, you go buy that linen,

  31. remember, and then go bury it in the

  32. Euphrates River and uh now he's buying

  33. um a new pot and then he a clay pot and

  34. he shatters it. The difference in the

  35. chapters 18 and 19, in chapters 18 you

  36. have wet pottery.

  37. wet pottery that's being formed. In

  38. chapter 19, you have dried pottery

  39. that's already been fired

  40. and so it's hardened.

  41. But in both cases, it's the same place,

  42. but there's different things going on.

  43. And so Jeremiah gets his clue from the

  44. visual

  45. things that are going on in the pottery

  46. shop.

  47. And this the second message I'm sure he

  48. was wondering what now? What now?

  49. So

  50. u to kind of begin this let me read a

  51. couple of things that others have said.

  52. Bible teacher Derek Kner said

  53. if there is nothing so workable as clay

  54. put in the put in the making. there's

  55. nothing so unalterable as uh as is found

  56. uh after it's worked and you know and

  57. and hardened.

  58. And so that's the point.

  59. And at this point Jeremiah was to make

  60. his own uh uh reaction uh unforgettable.

  61. Everybody had saw it.

  62. Everybody was to see it. and he's to do

  63. something that's irreversible. You take

  64. a perfectly new and expensive clay pot

  65. and you smash it. You price tag still on

  66. it. Bang.

  67. So he buys it to smash it.

  68. It's a symbolic act.

  69. That symbolic act was tanite tanal to

  70. the word of God according to one.

  71. Now, Philip Reichen said Jeremiah 18 was

  72. an object lesson in God's sovereignty,

  73. the wet clay and making the clay and

  74. then remaking it. Jer chapter 19 is much

    Jeremiah 19 chapter mention

  75. more dramatic lesson in his wrath.

  76. So, chapter 18 was a lesson in God's

  77. sovereignty. Chapter 19 was a lesson in

  78. his wrath.

  79. I I'm telling all myself and forgive me

  80. for doing this. I've actually told this

  81. from the pulpit before,

  82. but when I was a young man in my teens,

  83. I played a practical joke on a

  84. individual

  85. that I probably shouldn't have done. I'm

  86. not going to tell you what it was, but

  87. it made him mad and I thought it was

  88. funny, but he didn't appreciate it. It

  89. had to do with my car and his car, and

  90. that's all the farther I'm going to go.

  91. So, I'm in I'm in a bowling alley and

  92. I'm playing pool with other people and I

  93. shouldn't even tell this story, but

  94. there's several there's about 10 to two

  95. pool tables there and a bunch of us are

  96. in there playing and I'm trying to shoot

  97. and this guy comes in with two other

  98. guys and he says he he took a beer

  99. bottle and smashed it in the wall over

  100. my head and the beer and the glass went

  101. everywhere and he said, "Hixon, we're

  102. going to take you outside and blankety

  103. blankety blankety blank." Well, that

  104. kind of got my attention.

  105. Fortunately, I had more friends in there

  106. than he did. So, nothing ever happened

  107. after that. He decided, "My friends are

  108. going to be on Hixon's Hixon's friends

  109. are going to be in his side, so we're

  110. outnumbered instead of us outnumbering

  111. him." So, they backed off and left.

  112. So, uh, but again, that smashing of the

  113. bottle into the wall was meant to convey

  114. a pctoral picture of what they were

  115. going to do to me. And it wasn't long

  116. after that, a football player that was a

  117. fullback, an extremely strong guy. Uh,

  118. this same guy and a few other guys took

  119. him out in the parking lot,

  120. beat ganged up on him, and ran over him

  121. with a car and put him in the hospital.

  122. So, they were serious about the damage.

  123. they wanted to do to me. That's what

  124. that told me.

  125. And u so

  126. uh

  127. God is serious.

  128. The breaking of this pottery that

  129. they're going to see, they're going to

  130. see how serious God is

  131. about the judgment that's going to come.

  132. You see, clay is very mild. When it's

  133. wet, you can make other things into it.

  134. you make it, you remake it, you you you

  135. you do something with it and so forth.

  136. We saw that earlier. But when it's dry

  137. and it's heated and it's warm and it's

  138. hard, you can't no more remaking.

  139. And so that's what's going on here. when

  140. he smashes the pottery

  141. and he smashes it in the garbage dump

  142. was which was the very place where they

  143. were sacrificing their own children to

  144. the potterer lived near there because he

  145. had to put his broken pottery into the

  146. near the dump. And so that's the

  147. background

  148. of all of that.

  149. Warren Wearsby said, "The nation of

  150. Israel was beyond discipline.

  151. They were beyond prayer.

  152. And now they're beyond repair."

  153. They're beyond discipline. They're

  154. beyond prayer. And now they're beyond

  155. repair.

  156. And he quotes Jeremiah 2:23 for beyond

    Jeremiah 2:23

  157. discipline. Jeremiah 7:16 for beyond

    Jeremiah 7:16

  158. prayer and now in 19 they're beyond

  159. repair. Time to break it all down.

  160. He said they had so hardened themselves

  161. against the Lord that all hope was lost.

  162. And then he quoted a section. I've been

  163. looking up verses on pottery in the

  164. Bible. Had a great time. I had a good

  165. time studying that. It's a fascinating

  166. subject to really dig into, but I'm not

  167. going to put that across the pulpit. I

  168. think it's better in the private study.

  169. But he said in the near east in that

  170. day, kings and generals often smashed

  171. clay jars in a special ceremony before

  172. they went out to battle. Apparently that

  173. fellow in Chilikopy was related to them

  174. and it was symbolic of their total

  175. defeat of their enemies. This image is

  176. also used of the Messiah in Psalm 29.

  177. You shall break them with a rod of irons

  178. dealing with the enemy gentile nations.

  179. You shall dash them in pieces like a

  180. potter's vessel.

  181. Now in Psalm 29, that's gentile nations

  182. that are going against the Messiah.

  183. Here it's his own people.

  184. The Old Testament theocratic kingdom of

  185. the Old Testament is beyond repair. The

  186. only thing you can do is smash it and

  187. start over.

  188. Here, God's not smashing

  189. some Gentile people somewhere. He's

  190. smashing Jewish people.

  191. It's a shocking shocking business here.

  192. So, let's look at it. Let's pick it up

  193. and I'll read the text.

  194. And uh before I read it, I want to

  195. remind you when we get to chapter 20,

  196. which I'll save for next time,

  197. Jeremiah got arrested

  198. for this sermon.

  199. He got thrown in jail.

  200. For this sermon,

  201. he got beat for this sermon and put in

  202. the stocks. That's chapter 20 and verse

  203. two.

  204. And

  205. that helps us to understand chapter 20

  206. when Jeremiah complains to God about his

  207. life and he wishes he's never born and

  208. that other stuff

  209. because it was serious persecution

  210. that he'd never done anything to these

  211. people but try to help them if he warned

  212. them and he got he got smashed for it

  213. and himself.

  214. So sometimes those things happen

  215. and Jeremiah is quite discouraged and

  216. you will see all of that next time.

  217. So let's just look at let's focus in on

  218. 19

  219. and the shattered pottery is followed by

  220. the shattered prophet

  221. and put it that way.

  222. The shattered

  223. poverty is followed by the shattered

  224. profit. That's an old outline I came up

  225. with a long time ago. And uh uh it it's

  226. u and he he Jeremiah just shattered.

  227. He's so discouraged.

  228. People he loved, people he ministered

  229. to, people he sacrificed for

  230. that repaid him with hatred, animosity.

  231. and rejection.

  232. If you

  233. many parents that have had that from

  234. their own children or their friends or

  235. other or their church or whatever.

  236. So we know something of what this is all

  237. about.

  238. Jeremiah 19, thus says the Lord, go and

  239. get a potter's earthn flask and take it

  240. to the ancients of the people and of the

  241. ancients of the priest. Don't go alone.

  242. Go shopping for it alone. You go, but

  243. you take the leaders of the people and

  244. the leaders of the priests.

  245. I want you I want them to watch you buy

  246. it. I want you them to watch you destroy

  247. it.

  248. It's a vis people say there's visual

  249. aids are helpful in sermons. Well, this

  250. is a visual aid.

  251. And go forth to the valley of the son of

  252. Henim, which is by the entrance of the

  253. east gate, and proclaim there the words

  254. that I shall tell you, and say, "Hear

  255. the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah

  256. and inhabitants of Jerusalem. And thus

  257. says the Lord of hosts, the God of

  258. Israel, behold, I will bring evil on

  259. this place." That means calamity

  260. concerning which whoever hears his ears

  261. are going to tingle. God said that a

  262. couple other times in the word. This is

  263. not something you want your ears

  264. tingling because of what God's doing.

  265. It's a shock

  266. when you hear about

  267. because God says they've forsaken me.

  268. They've desecrated this place. And by

  269. the way, look at the word this place and

  270. this city. I circled those in one of my

  271. studied Bibles when I went through the

  272. year. It's very interesting. God keeps

  273. talking about this place and this city.

  274. He's talking about Jerusalem

  275. which is where God's temple is which

  276. they desecrated with idols.

  277. And so he keeps talking about this place

  278. and other places he says this city. So

  279. he says in verse four, "Because they've

  280. forsaken me and have desecrated this

  281. place and have burned incense in it unto

  282. other gods whom neither they nor their

  283. fathers have known nor the kings of

  284. Judah, and have filled this place with

  285. the blood of innocence." That's the

  286. sacrifice of their children.

  287. And they built also the high places of

  288. Bale to burn their sons with fire for

  289. burnt offerings to Baal, which I

  290. commanded not, neither spoke it, neither

  291. came it into my mind.

  292. Therefore, behold, the days come, says

  293. the Lord, that this place shall no more

  294. be called Tophath, nor the valley of the

  295. son of Hinnim, but the valley of

  296. slaughter. We're going to rename this

  297. place.

  298. and I'll make void the council of Judah

  299. and Jerusalem in this place.

  300. And I will cause them to fall by the

  301. sword before their enemies and by the

  302. hands of those who seek their lives. And

  303. their carcasses will I give to be food

  304. for fowls of the heaven and for the

  305. beasts of the earth. In other words,

  306. they won't be buried. They're going to

  307. be eaten

  308. by wild birds and beasts.

  309. And this is a picture of the Babylonian

  310. invasion and the destruction of the city

  311. and the slaughter of the people and

  312. bodies laying all over the ground and

  313. the scavengers come and eat them.

  314. And I will make this city desolate.

  315. You think God's okay with a little bit

  316. of adultery,

  317. spiritual adultery? Would you be okay of

  318. that? a little bit of physical adultery

  319. by your marriage mate in your bedroom,

  320. in your house, in your bed. This was

  321. God's city. This was God's temple. They

  322. brought the idols in. It was just like,

  323. how can we how can we flaunt

  324. our disregard for God anymore and our

  325. disrespect for him?

  326. That's why this place, this place, this

  327. place, and this city, it it's it's

  328. emphasizing the wickedness of what was

  329. going on. Be bad if it went on anywhere.

  330. It's even worse if it goes on in the

  331. capital of the theocracy.

  332. It's bad that America supports adulter

  333. supports

  334. uh killing of babies. That's bad. That's

  335. terrible. abortion is there's people

  336. just promoting it as if it's a good

  337. thing. It's worse when you got apostate

  338. churches promoting.

  339. That's worse.

  340. So verse nine, excuse me, I will cause

  341. them to eat the flesh of their sons and

  342. the flesh of their daughters, and

  343. they'll eat everyone the flesh of his

  344. friend in the siege and distress with

  345. which their enemies, and they will seek

  346. their lives, and shall distress them.

  347. They shall break the flask. Then after

  348. you give the message, you're all going

  349. to become cannibals. And then you're

  350. going to become you're going to eat each

  351. other, and then the animals and birds

  352. are going to eat you. How's that for

  353. wrath?

  354. Then shall you break the flask in the

  355. sight of the men that go with thee.

  356. That's the Old Testament equivalent of

  357. the beer bottle against the wall.

  358. Now the people he took with him, the

  359. leaders knew what's coming. Now,

  360. that action spoke. There's some actions

  361. that speak louder than words, and that

  362. one did. This is it.

  363. Judgment's coming. It's not going to

  364. stop.

  365. It's over. God's had enough.

  366. And so

  367. verse 11,

  368. and you shall say to them, that's the

  369. leaders, the so-called leaders, not real

  370. leaders, not godly leaders, but the

  371. apostate

  372. leaders. Thus says the Lord of hosts,

  373. even so will I break this people and

  374. this city, as one breaks a potter's

  375. vessel that cannot be made whole again.

  376. And thou shalt bury them in toeth till

  377. there's no place to bury.

  378. They're all going to the dump

  379. till there's no more. The only burial

  380. yard where they'll bury is the dump and

  381. then there won't be enough to bury and

  382. so the birds get to eat. Thus will I do

  383. to this place, says the Lord, and to its

  384. inhabitants, even to make this city like

  385. Tophath. And the houses of Jerusalem,

  386. and the houses of the kings of Judah,

  387. shall be defiled, like the place of

  388. Tophath, because all the houses upon

  389. which whose roofs they burn incense unto

  390. all the hosts of heaven, and have poured

  391. out drink offerings to other gods.

  392. Then came Jeremiah from Tophith where

  393. the Lord had sent him to prophesy, and

  394. he stood in the court of the Lord's

  395. house. So, first he said it with the

  396. leaders right there at the dump which

  397. was at the uh there's the entrance of

  398. the potter's gate. Now he's into back

  399. into the city

  400. and he says, "Behold, I'll bring on this

  401. city and upon its towns all the evil

  402. that I pronounced against it because

  403. they've hardened their necks that they

  404. might not hear my word."

  405. And that was enough. That's what got him

  406. arrested.

  407. So

  408. when I hear when I see Jeremiah doing

  409. stuff like this, I feel like I'm kind of

  410. a whippy preacher.

  411. I've never got arrested.

  412. I've had police tell me I can't go

  413. doortodoor and so forth. I've been

  414. threatened with arrest. I've never got

  415. arrested.

  416. happened to us in Lancaster 50 years

  417. ago.

  418. Cults were behind it, but I won't get

  419. into that.

  420. So, here's an awesome picture of what's

  421. going on in chapter 19.

  422. And

  423. at this point in the book,

  424. the readers and the students of the book

  425. of Jeremiah,

  426. and I'm sure it's true of you, begin to

  427. become weary with the intentional

  428. monotony and repetition of the same kind

  429. of material.

  430. We've had almost 20 chapters of the same

  431. stuff.

  432. Idolatry is bad. Judgment's coming.

  433. and you better repent.

  434. There's not much difference, right?

  435. You've been unfaithful.

  436. And again and again, read about

  437. idolatry. When I last time I read

  438. through Jeremiah as a book, I counted

  439. over 70 times it's mentioned. And again

  440. and again, you hear about the coming of

  441. judgment.

  442. And again and again, we read about a

  443. broken covenant. And again, we're

  444. reading about a theocratic nation that's

  445. not listening to the prophet and

  446. refusing to hear God's word. We keep

  447. hearing the same stuff

  448. over and over and over again. Isn't

  449. there something else Jeremiah can do or

  450. say? Or why do you have to draw it out?

  451. Why didn't you just make one chapter or

  452. two chapters or maybe three chapters,

  453. but why do we have to still hear it? And

  454. we're in the 20th chapter now, and we're

  455. still dealing with the same stuff.

  456. It's it's an intentional monotony.

  457. It's an intentional monotony.

  458. God's intentional.

  459. And I I want you to They're just not

  460. listening. Jeremiah keeps preaching.

  461. It's like the preacher that preached the

  462. same sermon to his church five Sundays

  463. straight. And people said, "What's the

  464. matter, pastor? You preached that the

  465. last five sermons." And he said, "Well,

  466. when you put that one into practice,

  467. I'll preach another one." Well, that's

  468. kind of what Jeremiah's doing here. It's

  469. again and again.

  470. And I I I hope you when you're reading

  471. Jeremiah, it begins to sound monotonous

  472. to the almost the point of irritation.

  473. Uh, a lady was here this morning that

  474. was born the same year I was, and she

  475. she said, "I related to some of your

  476. illustrations because I'm the same

  477. generation you are." She said, "You were

  478. born in 1949, weren't you?" I said,

  479. "Yep."

  480. So,

  481. and she says, "I was too." Well, those

  482. of us of that generation or near that

  483. generation, we remember the so-called

  484. record players that played 45s or 78s

  485. and the needle would get stuck. Anybody

  486. remember that?

  487. You even remember that? And he goes,

  488. and my grandmother had an even older

  489. thing than that. She had one of those

  490. windup uh record players that was in a

  491. wood case. Victola.

  492. >> Victrola. You'd wind that. You crank

  493. that thing up and the wonderful records

  494. that were like 1920s or something like

  495. that and she's playing your we kids love

  496. that thing. We crank that up and listen

  497. to that old music.

  498. But inevitably there'd be one or two in

  499. there that that would get stuck and just

  500. and so we'd have to stop playing ping

  501. pong or whatever we were doing and go

  502. over and redo it and it finally got

  503. tired. Well, when you read Jeremiah,

  504. it's almost like Jeremiah, you're like a

  505. you're like a broken record. You're

  506. stuck. You Why don't you get off of this

  507. and go on to something else?

  508. And there's that uh there's that

  509. repetition to the point of irritation

  510. that comes to mind

  511. like a broken record

  512. or a dirty record or whatever it was

  513. that made that happen. What was it?

  514. >> Scratch.

  515. >> A scratch.

  516. >> A scratch. Okay. Yeah, the needle, Mr.

  517. Scratch.

  518. Now, here's another illustration. Every

  519. parent knows this.

  520. Or everyone is not a parent, but they've

  521. taken children on a big long road trip

  522. know this.

  523. Kids on a road trip, and I was that way,

  524. and my kids were that way, and I'm sure

  525. my grandkids are there. You're on the

  526. road after two hours. When are we going

  527. to get there?

  528. Are we there yet?

  529. And you keep, no, we're we got a long

  530. way to go. And you go another hour. Are

  531. we there yet? No, we're not there yet.

  532. Are we there yet? They, you know, they

  533. are they are up. They're frustrated with

  534. the monotony, especially if you're in

  535. some place like Kansas. No insult to

  536. Kansas or

  537. even Montana, which I love Montana, but

  538. it all looks the same pretty much.

  539. So if you're in one of those states that

  540. are flat and long and just you just

  541. repetition,

  542. repetition, mile after mile, pretty soon

  543. kids are saying, "I want out of this

  544. seat. When are we going to get there?"

  545. Well,

  546. that's kind of what you feel here.

  547. Enough already, Jeremiah. You could have

  548. made this book a lot shorter. Why are

  549. you making it so monotonous?

  550. You ever ask that question?

  551. It doesn't seem like a good prophetic or

  552. pastoral procedure

  553. to make the book first part of the book

  554. so monotonous

  555. and but they didn't put him in jail

  556. because of monotony.

  557. But it is it is monotonous.

  558. So why so much space especially when

  559. you're writing is writing is expensive

  560. very expensive whether you're writing on

  561. parchment or whether you're writing on

  562. uh Egyptian paper all that stuff is

  563. extremely expensive why go to all the

  564. expense why not cut it down

  565. the monotony is there

  566. for a reason

  567. and we think why exhaust the readers.

  568. Why test the patience of the hearers

  569. you're trying to reach?

  570. I've been thinking about that this week.

  571. I've thought about it before, but I've

  572. been thinking about it again this week.

  573. And I came up with three very clear

  574. reasons for this. And if you know the

  575. reasons,

  576. it will help you to appreciate this

  577. book. Remember, he's dealing with

  578. hard-hearted people who've hardened

  579. himself against God and who are just

  580. flagrantly disobeying God.

  581. Number one, the repetition of these kind

  582. of outreaches by Jeremiah and sermons in

  583. the temple, even though he's mistreated,

  584. it emphasizes the long suffering of God.

  585. Longsuffering

  586. is one of God's great attributes.

  587. Moses learned that the Lord, the Lord,

  588. and it talks about his longsuffering.

  589. Exodus 34:5,

    Exodus 34:5

  590. Numbers 14:18, Psalm 18:15. There's many

    Numbers 14:18 Psalms 18:15

  591. places in the Bible about the long

  592. suffering of God.

  593. And the New Testament picks that up of

  594. God's longsuffering in Romans 2:4 and

    Romans 2:4

  595. Romans 9:22 and 2 Peter 3:9. He's not

    Romans 9:22 2 Peter 3:9

  596. willing that any should perish but his

  597. longsuffering. So God is longsuffering.

  598. We don't have to look up all those

  599. verses I just quoted. There's plenty of

  600. verses on God's longsuffering.

  601. So the repetition of it deals with the

  602. fact that these people were hard to

  603. reach and it they just hardened

  604. themselves more and more and more and

  605. more rather than were reasonable or even

  606. susceptible to really hear it.

  607. That's the first reason I believe and I

  608. think it's a legitimate reason.

  609. Second,

  610. the nation of Israel broke

  611. the Palestinian covenant. I hate the

  612. name for that, but that's kind of what

  613. many people call it. Now, remember, they

  614. got the Ten Commandments through Moses.

  615. And then the case law, but what's called

  616. the Palestinian covenant is when they

  617. were on the mountains, cursed me this

  618. person, and blessed be that person. That

  619. was when they were in the right on the

  620. edge of the promised land.

  621. and they came under a conditional

  622. covenant. Enjoyment of the promised land

  623. is based on obedience.

  624. Disobedience will take you out of the

  625. land. That's Deuteronomy 29 16-29.

  626. It's Deuteronomy 27

  627. and so forth.

  628. And so the nation of Israel broke the

  629. Palestinian covenant. That was a legal

  630. uh legal relationship with God.

  631. They did it back then and were

  632. continuing to do the very thing God kept

  633. telling them not to do. He they kept

  634. doing it. He kept telling them, "Don't

  635. do it or judgment's coming." And he was

  636. reminding them of that covenant

  637. relationship and the consequences of

  638. breaking it and they kept breaking it.

  639. Now the Abrahamic covenant, Davidic

  640. covenant are unconditional covenants.

  641. But this covenant is a Palestinian

  642. covenant is the land covenant is u a

  643. conditional.

  644. If you're disobedient, you get evicted.

  645. If you repent, I'll let you come back.

  646. And that covenant been in effect for 864

  647. years.

  648. Anybody

  649. that's had a rental property knows

  650. sometimes people don't pay their rent.

  651. And I have one relative that had rental

  652. property. And the guy was supposed to be

  653. a Christian. He hadn't paid his rent in

  654. a year.

  655. And I told this person, "If he hasn't

  656. paid in a year, he's never been

  657. better get him out of there."

  658. And she finally did.

  659. And my dad had a rental property and

  660. people could miss once but if they

  661. missed twice

  662. he let them catch up.

  663. The disobedience became a habit

  664. and they broke the covenant. And that

  665. covenant was given back in Joshua's day,

  666. Moses's day and Joshua's day. And now

  667. we're up to Jeremiah's day. over eight

  668. and a half centuries

  669. of

  670. repeated and accelerating disobedience

  671. of the most flagrant God.

  672. So they're just asking God for

  673. I'm reminded of what Jesus said when

  674. Peter said, "How often shall my brother

  675. sin against me and I forgive him?" Seven

  676. times.

  677. And Jesus said, "No, 70 times."

  678. 70 * 7.

  679. What's 70 * 7?

  680. 490 times.

  681. They'd already exceeded 70 * 7

  682. for 864 years. They were breaking this

  683. this covenant that they swore to do.

  684. Now, that gets us to where

  685. the whole point is this is never going

  686. to work.

  687. This is never going to work out. Like my

  688. one relative's render that hadn't paid

  689. any rent in a year, might as well get

  690. they're never going to pay. If they

  691. could if they there's no emergency, they

  692. just don't care. They're not going to

  693. ever pay. So, just get rid of them and

  694. cut your losses.

  695. If the people had not obeyed after

  696. warning after warning, prophet after

  697. prophet, prophet after prophet,

  698. they're never going to obey

  699. after all this time.

  700. And it's proof

  701. that they can't.

  702. They can't.

  703. Idolatry is deeper than their loyalty to

  704. the Lord.

  705. And that's the whole point. And where

  706. Jeremiah is going with all of this

  707. is the old covenant

  708. is never going to work with this people.

  709. That's why we need the new covenant.

  710. And that new covenant appears very

  711. famously in Jeremiah 31.

  712. where God puts his law in their heart

  713. and all of that, the forgiveness of

  714. sins. And that's the new covenant. We

  715. celebrate with the Lord's supper because

  716. we get in on it not because we're Jewish

  717. people, but because we're related to the

  718. Jewish Messiah, we get the privileges of

  719. the new covenant ourselves by the

  720. forgiveness of sins that we have.

  721. So I believe that that that

  722. uh that that

  723. centuries old disobedience was to show

  724. you can give people enough time. You can

  725. give them generations to get it right

  726. and they're not going to do it. Time

  727. alone can't fix this. We need surgery.

  728. The heart is deceitful above all things.

  729. Who can know it? I the Lord.

  730. I the Lord. I can deal with this.

  731. Third thing that I observe,

  732. we all need to be long-suffering to

  733. those we minister to who mistreat us.

  734. I don't think that the just that the

  735. people were tired of hearing Jeremiah. I

  736. think Jeremiah was tired of talking to

  737. the people.

  738. He was they were wearing him out.

  739. And but we all need to be long-suffering

  740. to those we minister to who mistreat God

  741. and us. And if they mistreat God,

  742. they're going to mistreat us.

  743. And the New Testament is chocked full of

  744. verses on longsuffering

  745. for Christians.

  746. 2 Corinthians 6:6, Galatians 5:22. It's

    2 Corinthians 6:6 Galatians 5:22

  747. a fruit of the spirit. Ephesians 4:2. We

    Ephesians 4:2

  748. have to be longsuffering with each

  749. other. Colossians 1:11, Colossians 3:12.

    Colossians 1:11 Colossians 3:12

  750. Why do we have to put up with so and so?

  751. Why does so and so have to be in the

  752. church? I can enjoy it a lot if they

  753. never came.

  754. Well, you better learn to deal with hard

  755. people. You're you're another hard case.

  756. God deals with you.

  757. God's longsuffering with you. Maybe that

  758. person is one of those uh sandpaper

  759. Christians that Hudsonshed used to talk

  760. about that God want they are a rough

  761. person. They're sanding you and making

  762. you better. And so how many times people

  763. have said in the Psalms, I want to fly

  764. away like a bird.

  765. You just get tired of it.

  766. In 1 Timothy 3:16, the Apostle Paul

    1 Timothy 3:16

  767. says, "If Jesus put up with me, he can

  768. and you he can we you can put up with

  769. one another.

  770. He was longsuffering with me and with

  771. you. We can all be longsuffering with

  772. each other. Basic 1 Timothy 3:16 and 2

    1 Timothy 3:16 2 Timothy 3:8–14

  773. Timothy 3:8-14,

  774. 2 Timothy 4:2, 1 Peter 3:20, 1 Peter

    2 Timothy 4:2 1 Peter 3:20 1 Peter 3:13–17

  775. 3:13-17.

  776. Whoa, there's so many verses on this.

  777. Why? Because sin hasn't changed. Sinners

  778. haven't changed.

  779. Uh life hasn't changed,

  780. and so forth.

  781. Jeremiah is going to go so sick of this

  782. at the end of chapter 20 after he gets

  783. arrested and he confronts Passure and

  784. all of that. He says, "I just want to

  785. die.

  786. I don't want to lie. I don't want to

  787. live anymore.

  788. Just take my life." In fact, he he said

  789. even more than that, "I wish I'd never

  790. been born."

  791. Have you ever had your child say

  792. something like that? I wish I'd never

  793. been born.

  794. Get mad at mom and dad. They say

  795. something like that.

  796. Well, this is a whole fascinating study

  797. and we will get to that next time.

  798. Jeremiah said it.

  799. Job said it.

  800. Both of them said it.

  801. And both of them were wrong.

  802. There's only one person in the Bible

  803. that says it was better off for him if

  804. he'd never been born.

  805. And we'll reveal that person next time.

  806. Wasn't Jeremiah

  807. and it wasn't Job.

  808. And our Lord Jesus who suffered more

  809. than anybody suffered

  810. by the hands of man and by his he

  811. heavenly father said something even

  812. better

  813. in Psalm 22

  814. and we will get to that next time.

  815. So we will follow up from the shattered

  816. pot

  817. to the shattered prophet

  818. who just basically wants to quit.

  819. and I hope you'll be back for that. Why

  820. should we study this? Well, one, to

  821. prepare us for the new covenant and the

  822. appreciation of what the new birth does

  823. for anybody that's genuinely sick

  824. and for ourselves because apart from the

  825. new birth, we would be as just as

  826. frustrating to God and men as these

  827. people were Jeremiah.

  828. And next time we'll also see, yes, other

  829. people can wear you out.

  830. Other Christians can wear you out.

  831. Unsaved people can wear you out.

  832. God knows that.

  833. The prophets know it. Jeremiah knew it.

  834. He wrote about it. And we'll talk about

  835. it next time.

  836. And so, uh, I hope that this has been a

  837. little helpful to you. And just

  838. remember, the shattered pot was followed

  839. by the shattered prophet. Jeremiah

  840. himself was just shattered.

  841. And

  842. uh, life, his ministry wasn't easy, but

  843. I'm so thankful for his ministry.

  844. And I'm thankful for the any ministry we

  845. have and any hardship we have in life.

  846. We didn't have it as hard as Jesus.

  847. and we will be glad. It'll be worth it

  848. all when we see Jesus.

  849. It'll be worth it all when we see

  850. Christ.

  851. Father, we know all of us have to deal

  852. with uh folks that are hardened and hard

  853. against you. Sometimes it's neighbors.

  854. Sometimes it's family. Sometimes it's

  855. our own children.

  856. And we see the train wrecks that they

  857. make and we can't stop it and just so

  858. hard.

  859. And we feel the

  860. distance that they put between us and

  861. themselves

  862. in his heart after we've poured our life

  863. into them. Well, Jeremiah poured his

  864. life into the city of Jerusalem and the

  865. temple and the people there and all he

  866. got was death threats and went in jail

  867. and then later put in a system to rot

  868. and die.

  869. Oh God, you are so good to us even

  870. though we have hard.

  871. And we don't want to live soft lives

  872. when some of the prophets and the

  873. apostles and Christians of other

  874. dispensations or areas are Christians

  875. even now

  876. are dying for their faith.

  877. Black Lives Matter doesn't seem to care

  878. about the Nigerian Christians that have

  879. been slaughtered. They're quite silent

  880. about that.

  881. and the hypocrisy and the stupidity

  882. of so many people in our own nation

  883. and uh they they can't even hide their

  884. hatred of God and God's people.

  885. We just pray, Father, that you would

  886. help us to be patient and longsuffering.

  887. And many times we want to say, are we

  888. there yet? Are we there yet? As life

  889. gets hard and long, someday we will be

  890. there

  891. by God's grace

  892. and we look for that day and we pray for

  893. that day. And if we have a new heart

  894. already,

  895. we've been forgiven already.

  896. If you done the work of the new covenant

  897. in us already, we praise your name

  898. because we didn't do it to oursel.

  899. Jesus name.

  900. Stand turn to page 145

  901. 145 as we go from this place

  902. loving you more trusting you more.

  903. May the power of your love and the light

  904. of your word shine

  905. to a sin darken world as we go from this
