  1. Good morning, everyone.

  2. It's good to see you, good to worship with you.

  3. Please turn with me in your Bibles to Exodus chapter 31.

    Exodus 31 chapter mention

  4. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand

  5. and we will have one of our members bring a copy of the Bible over to you

  6. that you can use while you're here.

  7. We've been in a sermon series through the book of Exodus

  8. for the last year or so, and we're actually almost done.

  9. We're in Exodus chapter 31.

    Exodus 31 chapter mention

  10. I'm going to read in the beginning verses 1 to 18.

  11. I'm also going to preach on chapter 35 verses 1 to 3

  12. and verse 32, chapter 36, verse 7.

  13. But that second half is a repetition.

  14. God speaks to Moses, and then Moses later relays the same information

  15. to the Israelites, so a lot of it is word for word repeated,

  16. so I'm not going to read that at the beginning,

  17. but I will read chapter 31 verses 1 to 18.

  18. Let me pray for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  19. Heavenly Father, everything is ultimately from you and to you.

  20. We are creatures of dust, made alive by your breath,

  21. made new again by your spirit.

  22. We can do nothing apart from you.

  23. I cannot stand here and speak apart from you.

  24. We cannot sit here and listen apart from you.

  25. We cannot have the faith to believe and to obey you without your help.

  26. So, Lord, from the beginning to the end, you deserve all the glory.

  27. And we ask that you would be glorified and you'd be pleased by this time.

  28. Lord, I stand here not as an author, but as a messenger.

  29. Speak your word.

  30. Help me to say only what you would have me say.

  31. And incline our hearts to accept your word

  32. and to live in accordance with it

  33. so that Christ may be exalted in our lives.

  34. It's in his precious name we pray.

  35. Amen.

  36. Please stand for the reading of God's word if you are able.

  37. I will read Exodus 31 verses 1 to 18.

  63. Amen.

  64. Speak to the people of Israel and say,

  65. Above all, you shall keep my Sabbaths.

  66. For this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations

  67. that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you.

  68. You shall keep the Sabbath because it is holy for you.

  69. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death.

  70. Whoever does any work on it,

  71. that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

  72. Six days shall work be done,

  73. but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest,

  74. holy to the Lord.

  75. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death.

  76. Therefore, the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath,

  77. observing the Sabbath throughout their generations

  78. as a covenant forever.

  79. It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel

  80. that in six days the Lord made heaven and earth,

  81. and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.

  82. And he gave to Moses,

  83. when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai,

  84. the two tablets of the testimony,

  85. tablets of stone,

  86. written with the finger of God.

  87. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  88. You may be seated.

  89. Twice a year or so,

  90. our denomination,

  91. Sovereign Grace Churches,

  92. publishes a journal whose articles are written by various pastors

  93. within our denomination.

  94. You can buy a hard copy of it

  95. or download a free PDF of it

  96. at sovereigngrace.com slash journal.

  97. In the latest issue,

  98. whose theme was a passion for the church,

  99. there was an excellent article by my friend,

  100. Mark Alderton,

  101. who pastors Sovereign Grace Church of Aurora, Colorado.

  102. And I got the idea for my sermon introduction from his article,

  103. so I wanted to make sure I give him credit

  104. and encourage you to read the article.

  105. So think for a moment

  106. about what a typical Sunday morning looks like

  107. in our ordinary church.

  108. And if you have been part of other local churches in the past,

  109. feel free to think back to what Sunday mornings look like

  110. in those local churches as well.

  111. People from various walks of life gather together

  112. in the same place at the same time,

  113. or at least mostly at the same time.

  114. Some come early,

  115. some trickle in late.

  116. There are men and women,

  117. young and old,

  118. singles and families.

  119. There are empty nesters,

  120. young professionals,

  121. as well as retired,

  122. gray-haired saints.

  123. They're all sinners and sufferers in their own ways.

  124. Each carries his or her own burdens.

  125. Sometimes they're standing during worship,

  126. sometimes they're seated,

  127. sometimes the auditorium

  128. or wherever they're meeting is packed,

  129. but more often than not,

  130. there are many empty seats.

  131. There are some people singing.

  132. Some are in tune.

  133. Some are not.

  134. They clap in different rhythms.

  135. The PowerPoint malfunctions

  136. from time to time.

  137. The pastor preaches a sermon.

  138. Sometimes it's good,

  139. sometimes not so good,

  140. but it can always be improved.

  141. Sometimes the battery dies in his microphone

  142. at the most climactic moment.

  143. Other times there's distracting feedback

  144. on the speakers.

  145. A young man gets up to walk around

  146. to stop from dozing off.

  147. And a young mother takes her crying child

  148. outside to comfort her.

  149. A typical Sunday morning.

  150. Now contrast that

  151. with what's happening

  152. in our big,

  153. fast world.

  154. The advancement of artificial intelligence

  155. and chat GPT

  156. are shaking up industries

  157. and schools.

  158. There are wars

  159. and rumors of wars

  160. in Ukraine,

  161. Russia,

  162. Taiwan,

  163. China,

  164. Afghanistan,

  165. and South Sudan.

  166. There are mass shootings

  167. in Texas

  168. and Serbia.

  169. Natural disasters

  170. all across the world.

  171. There are CEOs

  172. becoming billionaires

  173. and CEOs

  174. going to jail.

  175. There are athletes

  176. winning MVPs

  177. and vying for championships.

  178. There are autocrats

  179. up for election

  180. and presidential hopefuls

  181. making their case

  182. and kings

  183. being coronated.

  184. With all of these things

  185. going on

  186. in the backdrop

  187. in our world,

  188. does the ordinary

  189. local church

  190. really matter?

  191. Mark Alderton writes

  192. in his article,

  193. most of the world

  194. has already answered

  195. no to that question.

  196. But the one

  197. who created the world

  198. and the church

  199. tells us differently.

  200. The ordinary,

  201. imperfect,

  202. gospel-believing

  203. local church

  204. as an embodiment

  205. of the universal church

  206. is the most important

  207. gathering in the world.

  208. Why?

  209. Because it is

  210. the blueprint

  211. of a broken world

  212. remade.

  213. Continues,

  214. the hope

  215. for fallen humanity

  216. is to have

  217. God, our creator,

  218. dwell with us

  219. in peace

  220. and unending joy.

  221. And as we survey

  222. the scriptures,

  223. we find that God's

  224. glorious plan

  225. has always been

  226. to do exactly that.

  227. The local church

  228. is the focal point

  229. of that plan

  230. being fulfilled.

  231. There is nothing else

  232. like it on earth

  233. because the local church

  234. with all its limitations

  235. and flaws

  236. is nothing less

  237. than the lived out

  238. realization

  239. of God's glorious plan

  240. to dwell among

  241. his people.

  242. The church

  243. is not merely

  244. the instrument

  245. or the means

  246. that God uses

  247. to fulfill

  248. his salvation purposes.

  249. She is herself

  250. the embodiment

  251. and fulfillment

  252. of God's

  253. saving purposes.

  254. The church

  255. is God's

  256. dwelling place

  257. on earth.

  258. As Ephesians

  259. 1.23 puts it,

  260. the church

  261. is Christ's

  262. body,

  263. the fullness

  264. of God

  265. who fills

  266. all in all.

  267. 1 Corinthians 3.16

  268. says that we

  269. are God's temple

  270. and that God's

  271. spirit dwells

  272. in us.

  273. with the apostle

  274. as the foundation

  275. and Christ Jesus

  276. himself as the

  277. cornerstone.

  278. It says in Ephesians

  279. 2.20-22

  280. that we are being

  281. built together

  282. into a dwelling

  283. place for God

  284. by the spirit.

  285. It's this

  286. glorious reality

  287. that our passage

  288. this morning

  289. about the tabernacle

  290. points to.

  291. It teaches us

  292. that we are filled

  293. with the Holy Spirit

  294. to build God's house

  295. and to rest

  296. from our work

  297. in remembrance

  298. and anticipation

  299. of God's

  300. Sabbath.

  301. So we're going to

  302. first talk about

  303. spirit-filled work

  304. and then we're going

  305. to talk about

  306. Sabbath rest.

  307. Chapter 31

  308. verses 1-11

  309. is the last section

  310. of God's instructions

  311. to Moses

  312. regarding the tabernacle.

  313. God has already

  314. given Moses instructions

  315. on what to make,

  316. why,

  317. and how to make them.

  318. But now he gives

  319. him instructions

  320. about who is actually

  321. to make those things,

  322. those furnishings,

  323. the tabernacle.

  324. And God chooses

  325. two skilled craftsmen

  326. to lead the whole

  327. construction project.

  328. The first name

  329. is Bezalel

  330. and the second

  331. is Oholiab.

  332. The name Bezalel

  333. means under the shadow

  334. or under the protection

  335. or under the shelter

  336. of God,

  337. which is quite fitting

  338. for a man in charge

  339. of building the literal

  340. shelter of God

  341. where the shadow

  342. or the glory of God

  343. will rest.

  344. The name Oholiab

  345. means protection

  346. of the Father

  347. or more literally

  348. tent of the Father.

  349. Again,

  350. a very fitting name

  351. for someone

  352. who's going to be

  353. in charge

  354. of building the tent

  355. or the tabernacle

  356. for God.

  357. So these men,

  358. handpicked

  359. by God himself,

  360. were destined

  361. for the work

  362. that they are about

  363. to embark on.

  364. We're not given

  365. many details

  366. about Oholiab,

  367. however we do know

  368. that both men

  369. are exceptionally

  370. skilled in their craft.

  371. Later in 3535,

  372. when Moses is relaying

  373. the Lord's instructions

  374. to the Israelites,

  375. he says,

  376. the Lord has filled

  377. both Bezalel

  378. and Oholiab

  379. with skill

  380. to do every sort

  381. of work done

  382. by an engraver

  383. or by a designer

  384. or by an embroiderer

  385. in blue and purple

  386. and scarlet yarns

  387. in fine twine linen

  388. or by a weaver,

  389. by any sort of workman

  390. or skilled designer.

  391. So they're like

  392. Renaissance men.

  393. They're very skilled

  394. in all artistic designs

  395. and crafts

  396. related to the tabernacle.

  397. And the Hebrew word

  398. translated skill here

  399. is the word

  400. that is most often

  401. translated as wisdom.

  402. And in Exodus 28.3,

  403. when it spoke

  404. of recruiting

  405. all the skillful

  406. whom the Lord

  407. has filled

  408. with the spirit of skill

  409. to make priestly garments,

  410. the word skillful

  411. there literally meant

  412. wise of heart.

  413. Just as wisdom

  414. comes from applying

  415. the knowledge

  416. of God's word

  417. to one's life,

  418. self.

  419. So skill

  420. comes from applying

  421. one's technical knowledge

  422. to repeated practice.

  423. So God recruits,

  424. calls the skillful,

  425. the wise of heart

  426. who have much experience

  427. in their craft,

  428. not novice craftsmen,

  429. but these skilled craftsmen

  430. to build the tabernacle

  431. and its furnishings.

  432. And the reason for that,

  433. of course,

  434. is what we talked about

  435. a few weeks ago,

  436. Exodus 28.2,

  437. because these furnishings

  438. and tabernacle

  439. are meant for glory

  440. and for beauty.

  441. And a clumsy,

  442. novice craftsman

  443. cannot make that.

  444. It has to be beautiful,

  445. it has to be glorious

  446. because our God

  447. is the God of glory

  448. and beauty.

  449. There's something

  450. to be said here

  451. for doing our work

  452. that we do

  453. with skill

  454. and excellence.

  455. Colossians 3.23-24

  456. commends us,

  457. whatever you do,

  458. work heartily

  459. as for the Lord

  460. and not for men,

  461. knowing that

  462. from the Lord

  463. you will receive

  464. the inheritance

  465. as a reward.

  466. You are serving

  467. the Lord Christ.

  468. Whatever your work might be,

  469. not only if you're

  470. a pastor

  471. or a theologian,

  472. but also if you're

  473. a mom,

  474. an academic,

  475. a nurse,

  476. a doctor,

  477. a software engineer,

  478. architect,

  479. designer,

  480. analyst,

  481. lawyer,

  482. artist,

  483. musician,

  484. scientist,

  485. administrator,

  486. sales rep,

  487. or accountant,

  488. accountant,

  489. you are to work

  490. heartily

  491. as unto God

  492. and not unto men.

  493. We should do our work

  494. heartily,

  495. not half-heartedly.

  496. A person who is

  497. working directly

  498. for a prominent CEO

  499. is going to work

  500. harder than someone

  501. who is working

  502. for a lowly manager.

  503. How much more so

  504. than if we are

  505. working directly

  506. for the Lord?

  507. How much more

  508. if we are serving

  509. the Lord Jesus

  510. who is seated up

  511. above in the heavenly

  512. places at the right

  513. hand of God the Father?

  514. We should not work

  515. lackadaisically.

  516. We should work

  517. heartily with skill

  518. and excellence

  519. like Bezalel

  520. and Aholiab

  521. unto God

  522. and not unto men.

  523. Other than his skill,

  524. we're not given

  525. much information

  526. about Aholiab,

  527. but we do know

  528. more about Bezalel.

  529. Bezalel is the son

  530. of Uri,

  531. son of Hur,

  532. of the tribe of Judah.

  533. Hur, you might remember

  534. from earlier

  535. in Exodus 17,

  536. is a man who,

  537. along with Aaron,

  538. held up Moses' arms

  539. when he was raising

  540. his arm

  541. when they were battling

  542. against the Amalekites

  543. in Exodus 17.

  544. It's when Moses

  545. raised his arms

  546. with the staff of God

  547. in his hand

  548. that the Israelites

  549. were winning the battle

  550. and so they held

  551. his hand up

  552. and Hur,

  553. Jewish tradition has it,

  554. even though Scripture

  555. doesn't tell us explicitly

  556. that he was the husband

  557. of Miriam,

  558. Moses' sister,

  559. which would make him

  560. Moses' brother-in-law.

  561. Whether that's true or not,

  562. Bezalel is Hur's grandson.

  563. Between Bezalel

  564. and Aholiab,

  565. Bezalel was the more

  566. important figure

  567. of the two.

  568. We know this

  569. because of a number

  570. of clues in Scripture.

  571. One is that he is

  572. always the one

  573. that's mentioned first

  574. and we are also given

  575. much more information,

  576. description of him

  577. compared to Aholiab.

  578. And according to

  579. Exodus 37,

  580. 1-6,

  581. Bezalel alone

  582. is involved

  583. in the construction

  584. of the Ark

  585. of the Testimony

  586. and its atonement cover,

  587. the two holiest items

  588. in the entire

  589. tabernacle structure.

  590. So while both

  591. Bezalel and Aholiab

  592. are the craftsmen

  593. and the craftsmen

  594. who worked under them

  595. and their supervision

  596. were all filled

  597. with the spirit of skill,

  598. Bezalel in particular

  599. is filled with

  600. something more

  601. than skill.

  602. We're told twice,

  603. once in chapter 31,

  604. verse 3,

  605. and again in 35-30

  606. that God has filled

  607. Bezalel

  608. not merely

  609. with the spirit of skill

  610. but with the spirit

  611. of God himself.

  612. The Lord says

  613. in 31-3,

  614. I have filled him

  615. with the spirit of God,

  616. with ability

  617. and intelligence,

  618. with knowledge

  619. and all craftsmanship,

  620. to devise artistic designs,

  621. to work in gold,

  622. silver and bronze,

  623. in cutting stones

  624. for setting

  625. and in carving wood,

  626. to work in every craft.

  627. Of course,

  628. this is not the same

  629. as the Holy Spirit

  630. dwelling in the new

  631. covenant people of God.

  632. We have the fullness

  633. of the spirit

  634. in the way that

  635. old covenant saints

  636. never knew.

  637. But this is still

  638. an exceptional statement.

  639. The only other time

  640. previously in scripture

  641. in the Old Testament

  642. prior to this

  643. that anyone has been said

  644. to be filled

  645. with the spirit of God

  646. was in Genesis 41-38

  647. when Joseph

  648. was described

  649. as a man

  650. in whom

  651. is the spirit of God.

  652. Just as Joseph

  653. was directed

  654. by the spirit of God

  655. and given his wisdom

  656. to interpret Pharaoh's

  657. dreams prophetically

  658. and then to administer

  659. the land.

  660. So here,

  661. Bezalel is filled

  662. with the spirit of God

  663. to provide prophetic

  664. and creative vision

  665. and practical management

  666. for the construction

  667. of the temple.

  668. The mention of the spirit

  669. of God also recalls

  670. Genesis 1-2

  671. when at the time

  672. God was creating

  673. the world

  674. it said the spirit

  675. of God was hovering

  676. over the face

  677. of the water.

  678. In fact,

  679. the Hebrew word

  680. that is translated

  681. variously throughout

  682. Exodus 31,

  683. 35,

  684. and 36

  685. as craftsmanship

  686. or craft

  687. or task

  688. or work

  689. to refer to the work

  690. of building

  691. the tabernacle

  692. is the exact same word

  693. that is used

  694. to describe God's work

  695. of creating the universe

  696. in Genesis 2-3

  697. when it says that

  698. on the seventh day

  699. God rested

  700. from all his work.

  701. God rested

  702. from all his craftsmanship

  703. that he had done

  704. in creation.

  705. So then the work

  706. that Bezalel is doing

  707. in building the tabernacle

  708. is modeled

  709. after the work

  710. that God did

  711. in creating the cosmos.

  712. The tabernacle

  713. is a kind of

  714. a microcosmos,

  715. a microcosm

  716. of the world

  717. that God has created.

  718. This parallel

  719. is confirmed further

  720. by the four attributes

  721. that the Spirit of God

  722. has specifically

  723. endowed Bezalel with

  724. in 31-3.

  725. Ability,

  726. intelligence,

  727. knowledge,

  728. and craftsmanship.

  729. I already mentioned

  730. to you that the word

  731. craftsmanship

  732. is the same word

  733. that refers to

  734. God's creative work

  735. in creation.

  736. But the other three words

  737. have an even more

  738. suggestive parallel

  739. in Proverbs 3-19-20

  740. which describes

  741. how God created

  742. the world.

  743. And it says this,

  744. the Lord by wisdom

  745. founded the earth.

  746. By understanding

  747. he established

  748. the heavens.

  749. By his knowledge

  750. the deeps broke open

  751. and the clouds

  752. dropped down the dew.

  753. Those three words,

  754. wisdom,

  755. understanding,

  756. knowledge,

  757. though translated

  758. differently in English

  759. here,

  760. are exactly the same

  761. three things

  762. that God has filled

  763. Bezalel with

  764. in Exodus 31-3.

  765. In Hebrew,

  766. they're the exact

  767. same words.

  768. So then all four words

  769. used to describe

  770. Bezalel are taken

  771. from God's example

  772. in creation,

  773. his wisdom

  774. in understanding

  775. and knowledge.

  776. Similarly,

  777. later on,

  778. when Solomon

  779. commissions the building

  780. of the temple,

  781. the Jerusalem temple,

  782. in 1 Kings 7-14,

  783. he says that

  784. Hiram,

  785. who is the master builder

  786. tasked with that,

  787. was full of wisdom,

  788. understanding,

  789. and skill

  790. for making

  791. any work

  792. in bronze.

  793. Again,

  794. the four identical

  795. Hebrew words

  796. are used to describe

  797. Hiram to create

  798. that intentional parallel.

  799. Bezalel is constructing

  800. the tabernacle

  801. and Hiram is constructing

  802. the temple

  803. and they are both

  804. imitating the Lord

  805. who created

  806. the heavens and the earth.

  807. In fact,

  808. we can even say

  809. that the tabernacle

  810. and later the temple

  811. are models

  812. of the created world.

  813. For example,

  814. we saw earlier

  815. that the tabernacle proper

  816. is modeled to be

  817. a symbol,

  818. a representation

  819. of heaven itself.

  820. The holy place

  821. and the most holy place

  822. represent heaven.

  823. Moses was specifically

  824. commanded to build

  825. the tabernacle

  826. in accordance

  827. with the pattern

  828. of the heavenly things

  829. that he saw

  830. on Mount Sinai.

  831. And then,

  832. the cherubim figures,

  833. the angels,

  834. that are on top

  835. of the atonement

  836. cover inside

  837. on the ark,

  838. or the cherubim

  839. that's woven

  840. on the veil

  841. that separates

  842. the holy place

  843. from the most holy place,

  844. and the cherubim

  845. on the inner curtains

  846. of the entire

  847. tabernacle structure

  848. surrounding the most holy place

  849. and the most holy place.

  850. They all suggest

  851. that you are entering

  852. into a heavenly place.

  853. There are angels

  854. floating all around you.

  855. All the golden furnishings

  856. point to the heavenly glory.

  857. All the golden,

  858. and where the ark of God is,

  859. which represents

  860. the footstool of God,

  861. it's the very throne room

  862. of God.

  863. You are sitting

  864. in his presence

  865. in his heavenly throne.

  866. And then,

  867. when you descend down

  868. the levels of holiness,

  869. from the golden level

  870. to the silver level,

  871. to down to,

  872. out into the courtyard,

  873. the furnishings

  874. are made of bronze,

  875. which suggests

  876. a more earthly character.

  877. Because the courtyard

  878. is a representation

  879. of the earth,

  880. in the same way

  881. that the holy place,

  882. and the most holy place,

  883. the tabernacle

  884. is a representation

  885. of heaven.

  886. The earth is where

  887. the Israelites worship God

  888. and make their sacrifices.

  889. So they have

  890. the bronze altar,

  891. which looms large

  892. as soon as you enter

  893. the tabernacle

  894. and represents

  895. the Mount Sinai,

  896. really,

  897. where they worshipped God

  898. and made sacrifices.

  899. That's where they will

  900. make sacrifices

  901. and worship God.

  902. The bronze basin,

  903. beyond that,

  904. the body of water,

  905. later in the Jerusalem temple,

  906. its equivalent

  907. is called the bronze sea,

  908. represents the waters

  909. of the earth,

  910. in particular,

  911. the water that

  912. Israelites crossed

  913. in order to escape

  914. from the Egyptians

  915. and to enter

  916. into the promised land.

  917. So the tabernacle structure,

  918. the whole thing,

  919. is a symbol

  920. of the heavens

  921. and the earth

  922. that God is bringing about.

  923. Remember,

  924. in the original creation,

  925. in Genesis 1-3,

  926. God was walking

  927. among men.

  928. He lived,

  929. He dwelled among

  930. Adam and Eve.

  931. His presence

  932. was not foreign

  933. to the first human beings,

  934. but because of their sin

  935. and because of

  936. their rebellion against Him,

  937. they were exiled

  938. from that community,

  939. from that Garden of Eden.

  940. And the question

  941. that's been hovering

  942. over humanity

  943. ever since is,

  944. will we ever be restored

  945. to God's presence again?

  946. Will God ever dwell

  947. with His people again?

  948. And the tabernacle

  949. is a preview

  950. of God's unfolding

  951. salvation plan,

  952. His answer to that question,

  953. that He does intend

  954. to dwell with His people again,

  955. this time forever.

  956. The tabernacle

  957. is a temporary fulfillment,

  958. temporary preview of that.

  959. that promise,

  960. what the tabernacle promised

  961. is fulfilled

  962. in the spirit-indwelled

  963. church of Jesus Christ.

  964. Remember how God

  965. created the world

  966. with wisdom,

  967. understanding,

  968. and knowledge?

  969. And then the temple

  970. and the tabernacle

  971. were produced

  972. with wisdom,

  973. understanding,

  974. and knowledge.

  975. And then later

  976. in Ephesians 1-17,

  977. Paul prays

  978. for the Ephesians believers

  979. that God may give them

  980. the spirit of wisdom

  981. and of revelation

  982. in the knowledge of Him.

  983. so that they might

  984. be built together,

  985. quote,

  986. into the dwelling place

  987. for God

  988. by the Spirit.

  989. Paul, again,

  990. plays on this same theme.

  991. The church,

  992. which is collectively

  993. God's dwelling place,

  994. is the final dwelling place

  995. for God

  996. that He is building.

  997. And that building project

  998. is right now going on

  999. as we speak.

1000. One day in the new heavens

  1001. and the new earth,

1002. the building will be finished.

  1003. John recounts

  1004. his prophetic vision

  1005. in Revelation 21,

  1006. 1-3,

  1007. when I saw a new heaven

  1008. and a new earth,

  1009. for the first heaven

  1010. and the first earth

  1011. had passed away

1012. and the sea was no more.

1013. And I saw the holy city,

  1014. New Jerusalem,

1015. coming down out of heaven

  1016. from God,

  1017. prepared as a bride

  1018. adorned for her husband.

  1019. And I heard a loud voice

  1020. from the throne saying,

  1021. Behold,

1022. the dwelling place of God

  1023. is with man.

1024. He will dwell with them

1025. and they will be His people.

  1026. And God Himself

  1027. will be with them

  1028. as their God.

  1029. Where will God dwell?

  1030. In the holy city,

  1031. the new Jerusalem.

  1032. And what exactly

  1033. is this new city?

  1034. It's the bride

  1035. adorned for her husband.

  1036. This is a reference

  1037. to the church,

  1038. which is referred to

  1039. throughout Scripture

1040. as the bride of Christ,

  1041. who is our bridegroom.

  1042. We, the church,

  1043. the people of God,

  1044. are the dwelling place

  1045. for God.

  1046. And we are currently

  1047. being built together

  1048. into a dwelling place

1049. for God by the Spirit,

1050. as it says in Ephesians 2.22.

  1051. In the Greek translation

  1052. of the Old Testament,

1053. the word that is used

  1054. to describe

  1055. Bezalel and Oholiab

  1056. as skilled designer

  1057. in Exodus 35.35

  1058. is the same word

  1059. that Paul uses

  1060. in 1 Corinthians 3.10

  1061. to describe himself

  1062. as the skillful,

  1063. the skilled master builder

  1064. who laid a foundation

  1065. for the Corinthian church

  1066. that others

  1067. are now building upon.

  1068. And Paul says

  1069. that he and Apollos

  1070. and others

  1071. are God's fellow workers

1072. and that the Corinthian church

  1073. is God's building.

  1074. And by extension,

  1075. every local church

  1076. is God's building.

  1077. Bezalel and his building

  1078. of the tabernacle

  1079. are fulfilled

  1080. in the new building

  1081. of the covenant church,

  1082. the New Testament church.

1083. And not only do Paul

  1084. and Apollos

1085. have a role to play

  1086. as master builders,

1087. every single one of us

  1088. as believers

  1089. who are filled

  1090. and dwelled

1091. by the Spirit of God

1092. have a role to play.

  1093. In the old covenant,

  1094. in Old Testament times,

  1095. the Spirit of God

  1096. only came upon

  1097. and filled

  1098. select individuals

  1099. to complete

  1100. particular God-ordained tasks

  1101. like Bezalel

  1102. who was charged

  1103. with building

  1104. in the tabernacle.

1105. But in the New Testament period,

  1106. in the new covenant,

  1107. God had promised

  1108. through prophets Ezekiel

  1109. and prophets Joel

  1110. that he will fill

  1111. all of his people,

  1112. all flesh,

  1113. with his Spirit,

  1114. not only

  1115. some select individuals.

  1116. And that's why

  1117. Ephesians 4

  1118. says that

  1119. that day

  1120. has not been fulfilled

  1121. in Jesus

  1122. and Ephesians 4

  1123. teaches us that

  1124. grace was given

1125. to each one of us

  1126. according to the measure

  1127. of Christ's gift

  1128. and God gave

  1129. the apostles,

  1130. the prophets,

  1131. and the evangelists,

  1132. the shepherds,

  1133. and teachers

  1134. to us

  1135. as a church

  1136. so that they might

  1137. equip the saints,

  1138. all of us,

  1139. for the work

  1140. of ministry

  1141. for building up

  1142. the body of Christ.

  1143. It means every single

  1144. one of us

  1145. is charged

  1146. with building up

  1147. the house of God,

1148. the house of the Spirit.

1149. And it's when we speak

1150. the truth of the gospel

1151. in love to one another,

  1152. it's when each part

1153. it says in Ephesians 2

  1154. is working together

  1155. that the body grows

  1156. so that it builds

  1157. itself up in love.

  1158. Do you know this

  1159. grave task

  1160. that God's given you?

  1161. There are varieties

  1162. of service,

  1163. there are varieties

  1164. of gifts,

  1165. there are varieties

  1166. of activities

  1167. and God distributes

  1168. all of them

1169. and entrusts all of them

  1170. to his various people

1171. so that we would be

  1172. an interdependent whole

  1173. working together

  1174. side by side

  1175. for the sake

  1176. of the gospel

  1177. and building up

  1178. his house.

  1179. We are also,

  1180. like Paul and Apollos,

  1181. God's fellow builders.

1182. Are you doing your part

  1183. in God's building project?

  1184. What are you doing

1185. to build up God's house,

  1186. his church?

  1187. The church, again,

  1188. as I said before,

  1189. is not merely

1190. a means to an end.

1191. The church is God's end game.

1192. The church is where God dwells

  1193. with his people again.

1194. What gifts has God given you?

1195. Do you share your tongues

  1196. and their interpretation

  1197. and prophecies

1198. with the people of God

  1199. to build them up?

  1200. Do you contribute generously

1201. to the ministry of the church

1202. and to the poor in the church?

1203. Do you use your biblical knowledge

  1204. and teaching ability

  1205. to share valuable insights

1206. to people that you talk to informally

  1207. or more formally

  1208. in community groups?

1209. Are you using your sociability

  1210. and friendliness

  1211. to draw people

  1212. into the bond

  1213. and the unity

1214. of our church community together?

1215. Are you sharing the gospel

  1216. with your neighbors

  1217. and friends

  1218. to convert new bricks

1219. that can be added on

  1220. to this structure

1221. that God is now building?

  1222. On YouTube,

  1223. there are thousands

  1224. of time-lapse videos

  1225. that show the construction

  1226. of a house

  1227. from start to finish.

1228. Have you guys seen any of this?

  1229. Okay.

1230. Some of you might be thinking,

1231. well, that sounds really boring.

  1232. But actually,

1233. it's like you watch it

  1234. and it's downright fixed,

  1235. like transfixing.

1236. It's really hard to stop watching

1237. once you start watching it

  1238. because,

  1239. and these videos,

  1240. these videos have millions

  1241. and millions of views

  1242. for a reason

  1243. because it's amazing

1244. to watch the action unfold

  1245. from the beginning

  1246. to the end,

  1247. to see how something

  1248. is built from scratch,

  1249. to see skilled laborers

  1250. doing work

  1251. and seeing something appear

  1252. where there was previously

  1253. nothing before.

  1254. It's also a huge time sucker,

1255. so don't get into it.

  1256. Sometimes when I'm reading

  1257. a children's Bible

  1258. to my kids,

  1259. I read the story

1260. of God's creating the world

1261. and there are these illustrations

1262. and I imagine to myself,

1263. man, it would be really cool

1264. if I could have been there,

  1265. see God bring about

1266. the heavens and the new earth

  1267. and the cosmos.

1268. Well, we have an opportunity

  1269. to do exactly that

1270. with God's building of the church.

  1271. This is God's work

  1272. of new creation.

1273. If anyone is in Christ,

1274. as we saw in the assurance of pardon,

  1275. 2 Corinthians 5.17,

1276. he is a new creation.

  1277. Everything that is built

1278. out there in the world,

  1279. no matter how grand

1280. and no matter how significant,

  1281. no matter how monumental

  1282. it might seem,

  1283. will eventually pass away.

  1284. Jesus tells us repeatedly

  1285. in the Gospels

  1286. that heaven and earth

  1287. will pass away.

  1288. When the new heaven

  1289. and earth comes,

  1290. Revelation 21 tells us

  1291. that the first heaven

  1292. and the first earth

  1293. will have passed away.

  1294. It says in 2 Peter 3.10,

1295. the day of the Lord

1296. will come like a thief

  1297. and then the heaven

1298. will pass away with roar,

  1299. with a roar,

  1300. and the heavenly bodies

  1301. will be burned up

  1302. and dissolved

  1303. and the earth

  1304. and the works

1305. that are done on it

  1306. will be exposed.

  1307. The monuments we build,

  1308. the schools we build,

  1309. the governments we build,

1310. Fortune 500 companies we build,

  1311. the Eiffel Tower,

  1312. the Taj Mahal,

  1313. the pyramids of Giza,

  1314. the Golden Gate Bridge,

1315. the Great Wall of China,

  1316. the Colosseum,

  1317. the Empire State Building,

  1318. the Palace of Versailles,

  1319. La Sagrada Familia,

  1320. the Burj Khalifa,

  1321. all of these things

  1322. will pass away.

1323. But the church of Christ,

  1324. built on the foundation

  1325. of apostles and prophets,

  1326. with Christ Jesus himself

  1327. being the cornerstone,

  1328. will never pass away.

1329. Because we are being built up

  1330. as a spiritual house

  1331. with living stones,

  1332. not dead stones.

1333. Because we are being built up,

  1334. we've been born again,

1335. not by a perishable seed,

1336. but by an imperishable seat

  1337. of God's abiding word,

1338. the word that remains forever.

1339. And when the bride of Christ,

  1340. the church of Christ,

  1341. is revealed,

  1342. fully sanctified

1343. in all of her glory,

1344. and we get to behold

  1345. that holy city,

1346. we get to be a part

  1347. of that,

  1348. she's going to be

  1349. more beautiful

  1350. than anything

  1351. you have ever

  1352. laid eyes on

  1353. on this earth.

  1354. And brothers and sisters,

  1355. we get to have

  1356. front row seats

  1357. for that construction project.

  1358. More than that,

  1359. we get to partake,

  1360. be part of

  1361. that glorious,

  1362. eternal

  1363. construction project.

  1364. Dear saints,

1365. do you really believe that?

  1366. Do you believe

1367. that the most important thing

  1368. being built

  1369. in this world

  1370. right now

  1371. is the church

  1372. of Jesus Christ?

1373. If you want to be

  1374. part of something

  1375. that will truly

  1376. have lasting significance,

  1377. something that will

  1378. last forever,

  1379. join God

  1380. in the building up

  1381. of his house

  1382. by putting your faith

  1383. in Jesus,

  1384. repenting of your sins,

  1385. becoming a part

  1386. of this household

  1387. of God,

  1388. that you might be

  1389. indwelled by the spirit.

1390. It says in Exodus 36,

    Exodus 36:2–6

  1391. verses 2 to 6,

  1392. Moses called

  1393. Bezalelah

  1394. and Aholiab

  1395. and every craftsman

  1396. in whose mind

1397. the Lord had put skill,

  1398. everyone whose heart

  1399. stirred him up

1400. to come to do the work

  1401. and they received

  1402. from Moses

  1403. all the contribution

  1404. that the people

  1405. of Israel

  1406. had brought

  1407. for doing the work

  1408. on the sanctuary.

  1409. They still

  1410. kept bringing him

  1411. freewill offerings

  1412. every morning

1413. so that all the craftsmen

  1414. who were doing

  1415. every sort of task

  1416. on the sanctuary

1417. came each from the task

  1418. that he was doing

  1419. and said to Moses,

  1420. the people bring

  1421. much more

  1422. than enough

  1423. for doing the work

  1424. of the Lord

  1425. that it has commanded

  1426. to do.

  1427. So Moses gave command

  1428. and the word

  1429. was proclaimed

  1430. throughout the camp,

  1431. let no man

  1432. or woman

  1433. do anything more

  1434. for the contribution

  1435. for the sanctuary.

  1436. So the people

  1437. were restrained

  1438. from bringing

  1439. for the material

  1440. they had

  1441. was sufficient

1442. to do all the work

  1443. and more.

  1444. The Israelites

  1445. were so eager

  1446. to bring their contribution,

  1447. so eager

  1448. to take part

  1449. in this building project

  1450. of the tabernacle

  1451. that they had

  1452. to be restrained

  1453. from bringing

  1454. too much material.

1455. If they were so eager

1456. to be part of God's

  1457. temporary building place,

  1458. which is now gone,

  1459. how much more

  1460. should we be eager

  1461. in building God's

  1462. eternal dwelling place?

  1463. that's the tension

  1464. I feel

  1465. in pastoral ministry

  1466. all the time.

  1467. Like,

  1468. I can't believe

  1469. that I actually

  1470. have to

  1471. sell this

  1472. to people.

  1473. I don't have to

  1474. sell this

  1475. to anybody.

  1476. There should be

  1477. lines

  1478. after line

  1479. after line

  1480. of people

  1481. just thronging

  1482. to come

  1483. to be a part

  1484. of this.

  1485. We get

  1486. to be a part

  1487. of God's

  1488. eternal dwelling place.

  1489. As I mentioned

  1490. last week,

  1491. throughout the

  1492. tabernacle narrative,

  1493. we find the phrase

  1494. the Lord said

  1495. to Moses

  1496. exactly seven times,

  1497. six times,

  1498. it's connected

  1499. to the various

  1500. instructions

  1501. regarding the

  1502. construction of the

  1503. temple.

  1504. We saw the sixth

  1505. occurrence in our

  1506. chapter,

  1507. Exodus 31,

    Exodus 31:1

  1508. verse 1,

  1509. when God gave

  1510. Moses instructions

  1511. about appointing

  1512. Bezalel and

  1513. Oholiad.

  1514. So this six-day

  1515. structure for the

  1516. instructions confirms

  1517. what we have already

  1518. observed,

  1519. that the tabernacle

1520. is a kind of new

  1521. miniature creation.

  1522. And we find the

  1523. seventh occurrence

  1524. of that phrase,

  1525. the Lord said to

  1526. Moses here in

  1527. Exodus 31,

  1528. 12 to 13.

  1529. And the Lord said

  1530. to Moses,

  1531. you are to speak

  1532. to the people of

  1533. Israel and say,

  1534. above all you shall

  1535. keep my Sabbaths,

1536. for this is a sign

  1537. between me and you

  1538. throughout your

  1539. generations that you

  1540. may know that I,

  1541. the Lord,

  1542. sanctify you.

  1543. It's no coincidence

  1544. that the seventh

  1545. word that God speaks

  1546. to Moses is about

  1547. the Sabbath,

  1548. which is about

  1549. resting on the

  1550. seventh day.

  1551. This is following

  1552. the pattern of

  1553. God's work for

  1554. six days and

  1555. resting on the

  1556. seventh day because

  1557. the tabernacle

  1558. represents God's

  1559. new creation work

  1560. where he will dwell

  1561. with his people

  1562. again.

  1563. It points to his

  1564. ultimate new

  1565. creation work in

  1566. the church.

  1567. And note how

  1568. this command is

  1569. emphasized.

  1570. He says,

  1571. above all,

  1572. you shall keep

  1573. my Sabbaths,

  1574. for this is a

  1575. sign between me

  1576. and you.

  1577. I'm not going to

  1578. speak at length

  1579. about the Sabbath

  1580. because I've already

  1581. preached twice on

  1582. the subject when

  1583. we're in Exodus

  1584. 16 and Exodus

  1585. 20.

  1586. I encourage you to

  1587. listen to those

  1588. sermons if you want

  1589. to find out more

  1590. about what the

  1591. Sabbath means for

  1592. us today as

  1593. Christians.

  1594. But this repetition

  1595. shows how enormously

  1596. important this command

  1597. to observe the

  1598. Sabbath was for the

  1599. old covenant people

  1600. of God.

  1601. Right after the

  1602. Exodus, as they're

  1603. embarking on their

  1604. wilderness journey

  1605. toward the promised

  1606. land, God gave

  1607. them the Sabbath

  1608. command.

  1609. He didn't wait

  1610. long to give them

  1611. that command.

  1612. He gave it to

  1613. them even before he

  1614. gave them all the

  1615. other commands in the

  1616. Ten Commandments.

  1617. And then in the

  1618. Ten Commandments,

  1619. as one of the

  1620. Ten Greatest

  1621. Commandments, God

  1622. gave the command

  1623. to keep the

  1624. Sabbath again in

  1625. Exodus 20.

  1626. And here, after

  1627. completing the

  1628. tavern, when they

  1629. are about to begin

  1630. the work of

  1631. constructing the

  1632. tabernacle, God

  1633. gives them the

  1634. command again to

  1635. observe the

  1636. Sabbath.

  1637. That's how important

  1638. this command is to

  1639. the Israelites.

  1640. God says that it

  1641. is nothing less than

  1642. a sign between me

  1643. and you.

  1644. That's why in

  1645. verses 14 to 15,

  1646. expulsion from the

  1647. community of God,

  1648. God's covenant

  1649. people, and a

  1650. death penalty are

  1651. threatened for

  1652. violating it.

  1653. When God made

  1654. his covenant with

  1655. Noah, he gave the

  1656. rainbow in Genesis

  1657. 9 as a sign of the

  1658. covenant with Noah.

  1659. And in Genesis 17,

  1660. when God made the

  1661. covenant with Abraham,

  1662. he gave circumcision

1663. as his sign of his

  1664. covenant with them.

  1665. And here, as he

  1666. makes another

  1667. covenant with Moses

  1668. and the Israelites,

  1669. God gives another

  1670. sign, and that sign

  1671. is the Sabbath.

  1672. And the Sabbath had

  1673. the function of

  1674. sanctifying or setting

  1675. apart the Israelites

  1676. for God as his

  1677. special people.

  1678. Because no other

  1679. nation on earth

  1680. kept the Sabbath, a

  1681. strict weekly day of

  1682. rest.

  1683. Right?

  1684. I've said this a few

  1685. times before.

  1686. No, you know,

  1687. week is a very

  1688. unnatural unit of

  1689. time, right?

1690. A year is based on

  1691. the earth's rotation

  1692. around the sun.

  1693. That's natural.

  1694. Right?

1695. The month is based on

  1696. the lunar cycle.

  1697. That's natural.

1698. A day is based on

  1699. the earth's rotation

  1700. around its axis.

  1701. That's natural.

  1702. Anybody just observing

  1703. the heavens and the

  1704. creation can come up

  1705. with those systems.

  1706. But a week, why a

  1707. week?

  1708. It's not based on

  1709. any natural phenomenon.

  1710. It exists by divine

  1711. fiat.

  1712. Because it's intended

  1713. to set God's people

  1714. apart from the rest

1715. of the world, rest of

  1716. the nations.

1717. The rest of the world

  1718. takes their, take

  1719. their orders from

  1720. creation.

  1721. They follow the

  1722. patterns that they see

  1723. in creation.

  1724. But the Israelites

  1725. God's chosen people,

  1726. they take their orders

  1727. from the creator

  1728. himself.

  1729. They follow the

  1730. patterns set by the

  1731. creator.

  1732. to work six days

  1733. and rest on the

  1734. seventh day.

  1735. This is why the

  1736. Sabbath is so

  1737. important.

  1738. Breaking the

  1739. Sabbath is like an

  1740. Olympic athlete

  1741. taking off his

  1742. country's uniform and

  1743. putting on another

  1744. country's uniform,

  1745. saying, well, I don't

  1746. belong there.

  1747. It's like someone

  1748. burning your national

  1749. flag.

  1750. Because it's the sign

  1751. of their covenant,

  1752. the covenant between

  1753. God and Israel.

  1754. This is why expulsion

  1755. is the appropriate

  1756. punishment.

  1757. You're cut off from

  1758. God's people because

  1759. essentially you have

  1760. renounced God and his

  1761. covenant community by not

  1762. observing the Sabbath.

  1763. And when you're cut

  1764. off from your

  1765. relationship with God,

1766. who is the source of

1767. all life, death is the

  1768. only appropriate

  1769. consequence, whether that

  1770. happens immediately or

  1771. eventually after you're

  1772. cut off from the

  1773. community of God.

  1774. And this all-important

  1775. Sabbath command applies

  1776. even to the God-given,

  1777. God-honoring work of

  1778. building the very dwelling

  1779. place of God.

  1780. Isn't that amazing?

1781. We can see this in the

1782. fact that the word work

  1783. used in Exodus 31, 14,

  1784. 31, 15, 35, 2 is the

1785. same word that was used

1786. earlier to refer to the

  1787. craftsmanship of Bezalel

  1788. and Aholiab and the

  1789. other craftsmen.

1790. God's telling them in the

  1791. Sabbath command to even

1792. rest from that work of

  1793. building the tabernacle.

  1794. Lest the Israelites think,

1795. well, we'll rest from all

1796. other work, but surely God

  1797. wouldn't mind if we're

  1798. building his house.

  1799. This is such wholly

  1800. important work.

  1801. God tells them explicitly,

  1802. rest from that work.

  1803. Exodus 35, 3 says this,

1804. you shall kindle no fire in

1805. all your dwelling places on

  1806. the Sabbath day.

  1807. It's kind of a curious

  1808. command, right?

  1809. What's wrong with kindling

1810. fire on the Sabbath day?

1811. God's not saying that the

  1812. Israelites shouldn't cook on

1813. the Sabbath day or eat only

1814. cold food on the Sabbath day.

1815. In the context of the

  1816. construction of the

  1817. tabernacle, the specific

  1818. prohibition is probably

1819. referring to the work of

  1820. smelting and metalworking

  1821. that are happening day

1822. after day to build the

1823. gold and silver and bronze

  1824. furnishings of the

  1825. tabernacle.

1826. God's saying you must rest

1827. even from this special work

  1828. of building my own

  1829. dwelling place.

1830. This is very helpful for me

1831. personally, and I believe it

1832. has applications for all of

  1833. us.

  1834. As a pastor, I can be

1835. tempted to work, work, and

1836. work, and to find my

  1837. identity in ministry rather

  1838. than in Christ.

1839. It's work that has eternal

  1840. consequences.

  1841. It's such meaningful work.

  1842. I get to preach God's

  1843. eternal word, infallible

1844. word, and I get to care for

  1845. God's people whom he

1846. purchased with the price of

1847. his only son, the blood of

  1848. his only son.

1849. But by resting even from

1850. this work, I'm reminded that

1851. God is the ultimate builder,

  1852. not me.

  1853. I'm dispensable.

1854. The church can get another

  1855. pastor.

1856. The church can't get another

  1857. God.

  1858. I might not be a pastor

1859. anymore one day, but I will

  1860. forever remain God's child,

  1861. adopted son of God.

1862. There are days and seasons

1863. of rest, even from the most

1864. important work that we engage

  1865. in.

1866. So no matter how important

1867. your work might be in your

1868. eyes, I think this could

1869. apply to mothers as well,

  1870. Mother's Day, and fathers,

1871. you could take your work so

  1872. seriously because you're

1873. bringing up kids in instruction

1874. and discipline of the Lord

  1875. and has eternal consequences.

1876. But your identity is in

  1877. something more than that.

  1878. Whatever happens to your

1879. kids as they grow up cannot

  1880. change your identity in

  1881. Christ, cannot alter your

1882. standing in Christ before God's

  1883. eyes.

1884. God is the ultimate builder, not

  1885. you.

1886. We are not the ultimate builders

  1887. of our families.

1888. We're not the ultimate builders

  1889. of our local church.

1890. So even from this work, Christ

  1891. offers us rest.

1892. The Sabbath is no longer the sign

1893. of the covenant between us and

1894. God because God has enacted a new

  1895. covenant.

  1896. covenant.

  1897. Hebrews 8.13 says, by saying a

1898. new covenant, he has declared

1899. that the first is obsolete.

1900. We no longer, we're no longer

1901. under the law, but we are led by

  1902. the Spirit.

  1903. He says, Galatians 5.18.

1904. Romans 10.4 says that Christ is

1905. the end of the law for righteousness

  1906. to everyone who believes.

1907. And Jesus says in Matthew 5.17-20

1908. that he has fulfilled the law.

1909. He's brought it to its proper

1910. fulfillment and end so that we as

1911. Christians are no longer under its

1912. legal demands of the old covenant

  1913. as law.

1914. And this is why in Colossians 2.16-17

1915. Paul says specifically about the

1916. Sabbath, therefore let no one pass

1917. judgment on you in questions of

1918. food and drink or with regard to a

1919. festival or a new moon or a

  1920. Sabbath.

1921. These are a shadow of the things to

1922. come, but the substance belongs to

  1923. Christ.

1924. The Sabbath was merely a shadow

1925. cast by the reality, the real

1926. substance of the rest we have in

1927. Jesus, the eternal spiritual rest

1928. that we have in Jesus as Hebrews 4

  1929. speaks of.

1930. However, the fact that the

1931. Sabbath has been fulfilled and it's

1932. not legally binding on us as law

  1933. doesn't mean that it doesn't have

  1934. anything to teach us.

  1935. It's still part of God's inspired

  1936. word.

1937. It's still profitable for teaching

1938. and to make us complete, equipped

  1939. for every good work.

  1940. So in its Christ-fulfilled,

1941. transformed form, the Sabbath still

1942. has many important things to teach

  1943. us.

1944. I think one application is that we

1945. shouldn't be legalistic about its

1946. observance since Christ has already

  1947. fulfilled it.

1948. It's not something you have to

  1949. observe.

1950. Sometimes the Sabbath can be a cover

1951. for selfishness, an excuse for

  1952. self-centered self-care.

1953. Sometimes it can be an expression of

1954. pride like it was for the Pharisees,

1955. a way of showing other people how

1956. mature I am compared to others.

1957. But we also shouldn't disregard the

  1958. Sabbath principle.

1959. As Jesus says in Mark 2, 27, the

1960. Sabbath, or 22, 7, the Sabbath was

  1961. made for man.

1962. In other words, for our sake, for our

  1963. benefit.

1964. We can see this in our passage in

  1965. Exodus 31, 17.

1966. Please look there with me.

  1967. Exodus 31, 17 says,

1968. It is a sign forever between me and

1969. the people of Israel that in six

1970. days the Lord made heaven and earth,

1971. and on the seventh day he rested and

  1972. was refreshed.

1973. God set this pattern for us so that we

1974. might rest and be refreshed.

1975. God wants to refresh you.

1976. The cure for burnout is not necessarily

  1977. less work.

1978. Sometimes people who serve the least are

  1979. the most burnt out.

1980. The cure for burnout is more rest in

  1981. Jesus.

  1982. Jesus said in Matthew 11, 28 to 30,

1983. Come to me all who labor and are

1984. heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

1985. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

1986. for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you

1987. will find rest for your souls.

1988. Rest for your soul is found in the

1989. finished work of Christ on the cross.

1990. We can rest only because Jesus declared on

1991. the cross after paying for our sins there

1992. and nailing it to the cross, he said,

  1993. It is finished.

1994. You don't need to save yourself with your own

  1995. good works.

1996. You don't need to justify your own

  1997. existence.

1998. You don't need to justify your own status.

1999. You don't need to justify your own

  2000. significance.

2001. You can rest in Christ today.

2002. Find your salvation in him.

2003. Find your sufficiency in him.

2004. Find your identity in him.

2005. Find your all in all in him.

2006. Find your soul in him.

2007. It's then, and only then, that your soul

  2008. will be at rest.

  2009. Let's pray together.

2010. Lord Jesus, thank you for the rest that you

  2011. offer us.

2012. Lord, it is so easy for us to fall into our

2013. old ways, our old habits of trying to

  2014. justify ourselves.

2015. Trying to prove by our own works, by our

2016. own efforts, that our lives mean

  2017. something.

2018. That our lives are worth something.

  2019. That we are significant.

2020. But Lord, teach us to live by grace and

  2021. not by the law.

2022. Teach us to live by your spirit and not by the

  2023. law.

2024. To find all that we need and all that we

  2025. have in Jesus.

2026. Find our significance, our identity in him.

2027. Lord, help us with that.

2028. So that we would give ourselves eagerly to the work of

  2029. building up your house.

2030. All the while trusting in and resting in the reality that

2031. Jesus, you, God the Father, you are the ultimate builder.

2032. Father, thank you for letting us be a part of this, Lord.

2033. In Jesus' name we pray.

  2034. Amen.

  2035. Amen.

  2036. Amen.
