  1. Open your Bibles if you would to the

  2. book of Luke

  3. this morning, the Gospel of Luke.

  4. We've been going through a series on the

  5. Godhead

  6. and

  7. looking at the names and the

  8. descriptions of the Holy Spirit

  9. this morning. Again,

  10. big subject and

  11. just enjoyed studying this out and

  12. looking at these verses and learning

  13. these things from the word of God.

  14. We're in Luke 24. Got a couple close

  15. together here this morning as we begin.

  16. We do believe in the triune God, father,

  17. son, and holy spirit.

  18. And the father's name is designated. Um

  19. the son's name is designated. And God

  20. the holy spirit has a lot of names.

  21. And here is one for us. And in verse 49,

  22. you know, this is at the end of the

  23. gospel. This is at the end of Jesus

  24. ministries. One of the last things

  25. that he said, this goes with the book of

  26. Acts. Uh you're familiar with with this.

  27. He says here, "And behold, I send you a

  28. promise of my father upon you." So

  29. here's another name of God the Holy

  30. Spirit. Uh God the Son says it's the

  31. promise of God the Father and he's going

  32. to come upon you. And that that's a very

  33. interesting word come upon you. It means

  34. to be clothed with. So we're going to be

  35. clothed with the early church. Uh those

  36. that received this promise

  37. uh and and now we receive the promise of

  38. the father as well. And Jesus wanted

  39. them to stay in Jerusalem until they be

  40. endued or clothed with power from on

  41. high. So that's where we begin this

  42. morning. The promise of his father. So

  43. the Holy Spirit

  44. uh he's not somebody that we ask for.

  45. He's not somebody that we seek.

  46. Uh there's no merit in this that there

  47. are some people that are better at

  48. whatever it is that you can think of

  49. than the others are. No, this is a

  50. promise from the father upon every

  51. single believer, not just the apostles.

  52. You know, we we would expect that,

  53. right? Oh, you guys are apostles. You're

  54. going to be the leaders in the church. I

  55. bet, you know, God's going to pour the

  56. Holy Spirit out on you guys. No, Jesus

  57. said on everyone, even even the the the

  58. children and daughters, as he said in

  59. Acts chapter 1, so this is the promise

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  60. of the father that's coming upon every

  61. believer.

  62. uh and we don't merit this and and we

  63. don't clothe ourselves here for the

  64. ministry. God, the Holy Spirit comes and

  65. does these things. So, that's the power

  66. here that he's talking about, the

  67. promise of the father and the power that

  68. we're going to be endued with from on

  69. high. Now, turn over to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  70. We got a couple close together here this

  71. morning as we begin.

  72. You know, there are times when the Bible

  73. refers to God as something, you know,

  74. and and uh you know, it just to let us

  75. know that, you know, he he is a real

  76. being. Uh God the Father, God the Son,

  77. God the Holy Spirit. You know, they're

  78. real beings are real people. And we have

  79. to think of it that way. And you know,

  80. God's not a person like us that he

  81. should lie or sin.

  82. But God is nonetheless uh the three in

  83. one. The three, the father, son, and the

  84. holy spirit united in one. And here we

  85. see in John 1 and verse 32.

  86. And John bore witness. Now we know that

  87. that's one of the ministries of the Holy

  88. Spirit. You know, Jesus said back there

  89. in Luke, he's he's going to come uh the

  90. promise of the father, this gift from

  91. the father. And we see in as well in the

  92. book of Acts in chapter one as as that

  93. that indeed did happen. Um and Jesus

  94. said you're going to be witnesses of me.

  95. So we have the will of the father was

  96. that Jesus the son would come. We have

  97. the will of the son and the son was you

  98. know he he wanted to please the father.

  99. We're going to look at some of those

  100. verses later on this message. But the

  101. spirit has come as we see here to be a

  102. witness to the work of Jesus. And uh

  103. Jesus himself um had the Holy Spirit. He

  104. came, the spirit came in as we see here

  105. and John bore witness and said, "I saw

  106. the spirit descending from heaven like a

  107. dove and it abode on him." Now, every

  108. one of the gospels mentions this and

  109. every one of them says the same thing

  110. like a dove.

  111. Now, I don't want to go beyond what the

  112. scripture says, but at the same time, I

  113. don't I I want to honor what the

  114. scripture says. He was like a dove. He

  115. didn't say he was a dove. But it says

  116. here in an abode on him. So, the Holy

  117. Spirit's invisible,

  118. but God sent something forth here so

  119. that they could see and know that the

  120. Holy Spirit came from on high. You know,

  121. that's what the gospels of Luke says

  122. about the incarnation. The spirit came

  123. from on high. So, the Holy Spirit from

  124. on high come down. That's what John

  125. wants us to see here. And he rested and

  126. he abodeed upon Jesus. And we've talked

  127. about. So, you know, there are times

  128. that God tells us in his word that, you

  129. know, the spirit is a symbol. And here's

  130. one of those times. He is like a dove.

  131. We're going to look at some more of

  132. those in a minute. But, you know, Jesus

  133. says for us to be harmless like a dove,

  134. you know, so, you know, doves are

  135. they're not raptors.

  136. Um, you know, they're pretty calm,

  137. humble birds when you compare them to

  138. all the other birds. And, you know,

  139. that's that's a some of the things that

  140. God wants us to know about the the Holy

  141. Spirit. He's harmless like a dove as

  142. well. He's invisible and but but they

  143. saw some they saw something and and they

  144. all four said it was like a dove. So

  145. we'll just leave it there. It was like a

  146. dove. But the key here is that he came

  147. from heaven. And again, all four of the

  148. gospels talk about this about the father

  149. sending the son and the son receiving

  150. the spirit much like we see here. So

  151. turn to Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  152. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  153. chapter 10

  154. and verse 29. We have another name here

  155. for the Holy Spirit, the spirit of

  156. grace,

  157. you know, and that's uh we saw that when

  158. we looked in the Old Testament at the at

  159. the Holy Spirit. This is one of the good

  160. names or favorite names, I guess. He's

  161. the spirit of grace. I'm glad he's not

  162. the spirit of of a fill in the blank,

  163. but God sent forth the spirit of grace.

  164. And and you know, that's the Holy

  165. Spirit's job is for us to rightly

  166. understand

  167. God's grace.

  168. You know, you want you want to

  169. understand somebody's theology, just

  170. say, "Hey, tell me about God's grace."

  171. Hebrews. Yeah.

  172. >> Yeah. I'm sorry, John. Yeah. 10:29.

  173. Hebrews 10:29.

    Hebrews 10:29

  174. And we have two names here. The spirit

  175. of grace is what we're looking for at

  176. the end of the verse here. He says, "Oh,

  177. how much sort of punishment suppose you

  178. that you have been worthy, though you

  179. have trotted under foot the son of God

  180. and has counted the blood of the

  181. covenant, which was sanctified an unholy

  182. name thing, and you've been destitute to

  183. the spirit of grace." There's our word,

  184. spirit of grace.

  185. So God, the Holy Spirit is a spirit of

  186. grace. He comes to help us understand

  187. the work of God in Christ, what his

  188. blood has done, what the son of God has

  189. done, you know, and he he sanctifies

  190. these things in our hearts so we'll

  191. understand, you know, the grace of God,

  192. you know, and Paul warned uh turn back

  193. to Zechariah chapter 12.

    Zechariah 12 chapter mention

  194. Zechariah chapter 12.

    Zechariah 12 chapter mention

  195. I'm sorry. Yeah. Zechariah chapter 12.

    Zechariah 12 chapter mention

  196. Zechariah 12.

  197. And here's the spirit of grace,

  198. you know, and that's uh you read your

  199. Bible and you you hear Moses and the

  200. children of Israel,

  201. you know, they broke the law. They they

  202. were sinful. He is a sinful man. They

  203. were a sinful nation. And and and Moses

  204. pleaded for God's grace upon his people.

  205. And God said, "Yeah, I'll be gracious to

  206. you."

  207. And we need to know that, you know, and

  208. we can't know that without the spirit of

  209. grace.

  210. And it's in the Old Testament here. And

  211. it wasn't just on one person or select

  212. people like we saw as we studied this.

  213. And we've looked in the Old Testament.

  214. We seen the spirit in in three primary

  215. areas in the Old Testament in creation,

  216. in the children of God, and upon the

  217. Messiah. Those are the three key areas

  218. in the Old Testament. Well, here the

  219. spirit of grace is going to be on the

  220. Messiah.

  221. And how are we going to benefit from

  222. that?

  223. Well, he says, I will pour out on the

  224. house of David upon the inhabitants of

  225. Jerusalem

  226. the spirit of grace and of supplication.

  227. So, you know, we have to realize that,

  228. you know, we're going to have, you know,

  229. issues in life. You know, everything's

  230. not going to go good. Everything's not

  231. going to go well.

  232. And, you know, God is going to be able

  233. to come and to help us now in a greater

  234. way because of what the Messiah is going

  235. to do.

  236. You know, that's why

  237. Jesus got upset when Peter said, you

  238. know, you're not going to the cross. And

  239. Jesus said, I have to go to the cross.

  240. You know, if I don't, these things are

  241. not going to happen. But he did go to

  242. the cross. And now we have the spirit of

  243. grace and of supplication that is in us.

  244. And they shall have looked upon me whom

  245. they have pierced. and they will mourn

  246. for him as one mourns for his own son

  247. and in bitterness for him and one that

  248. is in bitterness for his first born. So,

  249. you know, we the nation of Israel

  250. someday is going to realize they they've

  251. crucified and murdered their Messiah

  252. and Jesus is the one that's going to

  253. take take us from mourning to joy. And

  254. and that's what this verse is saying.

  255. And now we Gentiles now we're benefiting

  256. greatly from this. That's what Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  257. chapter 8 all all that there in Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  258. chapter 8 about the Holy Spirit coming

  259. uh to us and being in our heart and

  260. helping us uh to overcome the issues and

  261. the mourning and the and the sorrow that

  262. we go through in this life. You know, G,

  263. even though Jesus is called the man of

  264. sorrow, he's much more uh isn't he?

  265. Let's turn to First Peter chapter 4.

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  266. 1 Peter chapter 4

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  267. and verse 14. We have the spirit of

  268. glory here and of God.

  269. 1 Peter chapter 4 and verse

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  270. uh 14. Now you remember what he said

  271. way back there in Zechariah.

  272. You know that

  273. he our mourning is going to be turned to

  274. joy.

  275. And here Peter says if you're reproach

  276. for the name of Christ, happy are you.

  277. So the joy that comes and the happiness

  278. that comes now even though we're

  279. persecuted in this life

  280. for the here's the word we want the

  281. spirit of glory and of God will rest

  282. upon you on their part he's even spoken

  283. up and on your part he's glorified so it

  284. means it's a good thing for us to be

  285. persecuted for the cause of Christ. So

  286. you know Jesus is this and more. Uh he

  287. he's uh he he imparts his divine power

  288. to us through his word and through the

  289. Holy Spirit that uh imparts us here. you

  290. know, he has all this power and to do

  291. these things and happy are you and you

  292. know when you're persecuted and somehow

  293. persecution brings joy and the way that

  294. happens is because the spirit of glory

  295. and the spirit of God that dwells in us.

  296. He's the the author of the truth. He's

  297. the author of the of life uh the spirit

  298. of glory that is in us. And he is the

  299. one God sends forth in our hearts uh to

  300. to let us know that we are um adopted as

  301. Romans chapter 8 talks about.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  302. Okay. Hebrews chapter 9.

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  303. Back to Hebrews

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  304. chapter 9

  305. and verse 14. We have

  306. the eternal spirit here. You know, the

  307. Holy Spirit was not created by God the

  308. Father and God the Son,

  309. you know, and some people believe that.

  310. And I don't know, that's not what the

  311. Bible says. That's the Holy Spirit is

  312. God. He's the creator, not a creature.

  313. And here's a good verse to show somebody

  314. that, you know, the Holy Spirit has life

  315. in him. He He has He's God. So he he has

  316. life in us and he imparts it. He has

  317. light and that light is Christ in the

  318. word of God,

  319. you know. So the Holy Spirit helps us in

  320. these areas. The eternal spirit, he

  321. brought us eternal life. You know, we

  322. were dead like Lazarus

  323. and we needed resurrection life

  324. spiritually.

  325. It's Romans chapter 6. Being raised

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  326. together with Christ, we're following

  327. him. So, the eternal spirit of God is

  328. the one that did this for us. And here

  329. in Hebrews chapter 9 verse14, how much

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  330. more shall the blood of Christ

  331. who through the eternal spirit offered

  332. himself without spot to God purge your

  333. conscience from dead works to serve the

  334. living God. So how do we do that? I mean

  335. how do we go from failing and how do we

  336. go from doing the wrong things to doing

  337. the right things and thinking the right

  338. thoughts? Well, it happens through God,

  339. the Holy Spirit, the eternal spirit of

  340. God. And Jesus has he's not a creature.

  341. So, um, and and neither is the spirit.

  342. He's not a creature. So, whatever you

  343. know, God can do, the Holy Spirit can

  344. do.

  345. And now turn to Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  346. Hebrews chapter 1

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  347. and verse 9.

  348. Here we have the Holy Spirit is called

  349. the oil of gladness

  350. in Hebrews chapter 1

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  351. and verse 9.

  352. You know it's it's uh you know we're

  353. we're children of God now. Those of us

  354. who have been born of the spirit and the

  355. spirit dwells within us and we've become

  356. children of God, you know, God wants to

  357. clean us up like he wants us clean like

  358. he is clean.

  359. He doesn't want any dirty vessels.

  360. And when we and we get dirty, don't we?

  361. So, we come and we confess our sin. to

  362. come and we ask for God's grace and love

  363. and mercy and those things that God

  364. offers to us in his son.

  365. So, as we're growing and we want to be

  366. we want to love righteousness and hate

  367. iniquity that God does.

  368. I mean, how can we say we're children of

  369. God if we don't also hate what he hates

  370. and love what he loves?

  371. And that's what the word of God does.

  372. Well, how can you know, how can we get

  373. cleaned up

  374. uh through the word of God and through

  375. the spirit of God? And that's what he

  376. says here in verse 9. You've loved

  377. righteousness and hated iniquity.

  378. Therefore, God, even thy God, has

  379. anointed thee

  380. with the oil of gladness above thy

  381. fellows.

  382. Well, how do we know the oil of gladness

  383. is the Holy Spirit?

  384. But we have to have to search the

  385. scripture, don't we? He he is the Holy

  386. Spirit is the oil of gladness. And like

  387. you know John said he saw a dove.

  388. Matthew said they saw a dove. And here

  389. um we have another description of the

  390. Holy Spirit to help us understand. Uh

  391. he's called the oil gladness here

  392. uh above thy fellows.

  393. Okay, turn back to Acts chapter 10.

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  394. Well, who is Hebrews talking about?

  395. Well, they're he's talking about Jesus.

  396. He's the oil of gladness.

  397. And he's our Messiah. He

  398. is through him that you know he overcome

  399. the world. He overcome the devil. He

  400. overcome all these things on our behalf

  401. um to give us his righteousness. And

  402. here in Acts chapter 10

    Acts 10 chapter mention

  403. and verse 38,

  404. God anointed Jesus. So remember the oil.

  405. Remember the anointing.

  406. And here he says it's oil or he anointed

  407. Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit.

  408. Not with oil but with the Holy Spirit.

  409. So it's similar to what Hebrews says.

  410. The Hebrews says the oil of gladness.

  411. Well, here we see Jesus was anointed

  412. with the Holy Spirit

  413. and with power. What he do with that

  414. power? He went around doing good,

  415. healing all that were oppressed of the

  416. devil. God was with him. And we are

  417. witnesses of all these things that he

  418. did both with the Jews and in Jerusalem

  419. who you slew and hanged on the tree. him

  420. God raised and and he showed you all

  421. openly. So here in this verse we see

  422. that the oil of gladness here is the hol

  423. is the Holy Spirit that Jesus was

  424. anointed with and that was the Messiah

  425. Messiah's mission and uh you know the

  426. Holy Spirit is the oil of gladness.

  427. Uh um he you know he he is the dove and

  428. the Bible uses these terms to help us

  429. understand these things. Now turn to

  430. John chapter 4. John chapter 4

John 4 chapter mention John 4 chapter mention

  431. and the Holy Spirit's called a few other

  432. things.

  433. And some of those we're going to look

  434. at. They they all tie together so well,

  435. Old Testament and New Testament.

  436. Right now we're looking at the Holy

  437. Spirit is called the oil of gladness.

  438. And that's what he was upon Jesus here

  439. in

  440. in um John chapter 4

    John 4 chapter mention

  441. and verse 14.

  442. This is the woman at the well and Jesus

  443. talks about drinking and being thirsty

  444. again.

  445. Well, this living water that Jesus is

  446. talking about is the Holy Spirit

  447. and the word of God

  448. that does a great work in us. Whosoever

  449. drinks of this water that I give him

  450. will will never thirst, but the water

  451. that I give him shall be in him a well

  452. of water springing up into eternal life.

  453. How do we know that's the Holy Spirit?

  454. Well, he says eternal life. Only the

  455. spirit has life.

  456. Only the word of God has life. You know,

  457. we can make both those applications

  458. here.

  459. And you know, this is this is he is in

  460. us now. The spirit of the holiness of of

  461. the Holy Spirit and this uh the joy and

  462. the gladness of of the Lord. And

  463. remember, turn over to John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  464. John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  465. in verse 37.

  466. And you know Jesus,

  467. he was, you know, he was persecuted, he

  468. was maligned, he was rejected. You know,

  469. all those things that the Bible says

  470. about him in the Old Testament, you

  471. know, and and now in the New Testament,

  472. you know, all those things were true.

  473. He's a man of sorrow,

  474. but he was more than the man of sorrow.

  475. And here we, you know, that's what we

  476. need to see. He's more than a savior.

  477. That's a lot, isn't it? But he come and

  478. died for us that the Holy Spirit might

  479. come and dwell within us and be this

  480. well to everlasting life that he spoke

  481. of to the woman back there. And here

  482. he's in he's in the temple

  483. and he says, "If any man thirst,"

  484. remember what he told the woman at the

  485. well.

  486. "If any man thirst, let him come to me

  487. and drink.

  488. He that believeth on me, as the

  489. scripture has said, that's key, out of

  490. his heart shall flow rivers of living

  491. water." What's that? Well, John tells us

  492. this. He spoke of the spirit whom they

  493. that believe on him should receive. For

  494. the Holy Spirit was not yet given

  495. because Jesus was not yet glorified. So

  496. the man of sorrows is now glorified.

  497. And as he is glorified, he said, "Go to

  498. Jerusalem and wait on the promise of the

  499. father." So the work of Jesus

  500. accomplished these things for us. And

  501. now the spirit that God gives us is his

  502. promise of the father, a great and

  503. precious gift. 1 Thessalonians chapter

    1 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  504. 1.

  505. First Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  506. chapter 1

  507. and verse 6.

  508. And we saw in the Old Testament that,

  509. you know, there were time at times in

  510. certain, you know, seasons when when God

  511. would give the children of Israel his

  512. spirit to to do skilled work or to get

  513. wisdom from him.

  514. And but it was nothing that was

  515. permanent like now.

  516. the promise of the father

  517. and the spirit.

  518. He takes the word of God and

  519. and he helps us with wisdom. He helps us

  520. with understanding like he did in the

  521. Old Testament. You know, there was a

  522. dependency on God to know about God. And

  523. we have that same dependency.

  524. And here Paul says, "And there's more.

  525. The spirit does more than just help us

  526. understand and know.

  527. He says here in verse six, for you

  528. became followers of us and of the Lord.

  529. How do we become followers? How do how

  530. am I what I I stumbled onto Jesus?

  531. No, you didn't stumble on to Jes to

  532. Jesus. He come looking for you

  533. through the gospel, through the word of

  534. God, through his grace, through the

  535. spirit of grace.

  536. And he says the and the Lord having

  537. received the word

  538. and here we have in much affliction. So

  539. they were persecuted Christians

  540. and yet they've got the joy of the Holy

  541. Spirit. So we see here the connection

  542. made between following the Lord,

  543. receiving his word, being persecuted for

  544. it, yet having the joy of the Holy

  545. Spirit. So that's what the spirit does.

  546. He brings us this great joy uh from

  547. above.

  548. Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  549. Ephesians 5.

  550. You guys are familiar with this.

  551. But we'll revisit it here. Remember in

  552. Acts what happened at Pentecost.

  553. You know, the world, Jerusalem, thought

  554. the apostles and the disciples of Jesus

  555. were drunk,

  556. intoxicated in the middle of the day of

  557. all things.

  558. But what they were intoxicated with was

  559. the joy of the Holy Spirit.

  560. And Paul here tells us

  561. that's what we should be when we come

  562. together. Yeah, we have affliction.

  563. Yeah, we have problems. Yeah, we have

  564. difficulties.

  565. You know, we're we're like the followers

  566. of Jesus. Everything he tells us to do

  567. gets us in trouble with the world.

  568. But we do it anyway. And then we can

  569. come here and sing songs and be filled

  570. with the spirit of God. How how do we

  571. get filled with the spirit of God? By

  572. what he says to do. Speak to yourselves

  573. in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.

  574. singing and making melodies in your

  575. heart to the Lord. Singing and music is

  576. a big big part of worship and a big big

  577. part of church so we can do what? Give

  578. thanks always

  579. for all things unto God. God has given

  580. us everything. What what is it that we

  581. don't have? We have everything.

  582. That's what Ephesians chapter 1 is

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  583. talking about.

  584. Submit yourselves to one another in the

  585. fear of God. And that's this brings the

  586. fear of God. You know, don't try to get

  587. rid of your fear of God. That's a part

  588. of this. You know, he's the one we fear.

  589. We don't fear the devil. We don't fear

  590. the world. We don't fear, you know, men.

  591. We don't There's a lot of thing the

  592. Bible says not to fear, but as well says

  593. for us in the fear of God. That's why

  594. we're here.

  595. And if you would turn to Isaiah 61,

  596. Isaiah

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  597. chapter 61.

  598. We And we just have to keep making this

  599. connection between God said, "I'm going

  600. to do it." And and then it's now it's

  601. done.

  602. And it's the salvation is a free gift.

  603. The Holy Spirit is a free gift. We don't

  604. ask God for the spirit.

  605. He gives it freely.

  606. And here we are in Isaiah

  607. 63. I'm sorry, 61

  608. verse three. Morning, Martha.

  609. >> I got to grab my water bottle.

  610. I'm back.

  611. We're in Isaiah chapter 61

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  612. in verse three here.

  613. And once again, the Bible says that, you

  614. know, these the the gifts for the church

  615. and the gift of salvation

  616. and the gift of the Holy Spirit, you

  617. know, these all come to us in Christ.

  618. It's not something after afterwards or

  619. or later on.

  620. The minute we get saved, we get the

  621. spirit.

  622. Regeneration is brought about by the

  623. spirit. And then he doesn't leave us. He

  624. He comes to do a work.

  625. And God promised to do this in Isaiah.

  626. You know, that was a problem with

  627. Israel. They went on the day of

  628. atonement.

  629. Sacrifice an animal. Aren't you glad we

  630. don't have to do that?

  631. But they did to blood. Remind them of

  632. sin. We did wrong. Now we got to sac now

  633. we got to sacrifice.

  634. Blood. God accepts this as a temporary

  635. covering until his son could come. And

  636. and once his son did this great work,

  637. then you know, we're the we're the

  638. beneficiaries of it.

  639. You know, we talk about the spoils of

  640. war,

  641. you know, and I'm not trying to justify

  642. that,

  643. but it's an it's a part of the world

  644. that we live in. Those who win the war

  645. have the spoils.

  646. And that's what God's saying here about

  647. his son, about the Messiah.

  648. When he when he dies on a man of sorrow

  649. dies on the cross and here come all the

  650. spoils

  651. for his people.

  652. And part of those spoils is is is the

  653. Holy Spirit.

  654. And Isaiah 61:3, he says

    Isaiah 61:3

  655. to appoint. God always appoints. He

  656. doesn't run the risk of of happen stance

  657. and circumstance. He's God, so he can do

  658. whatever he pleases. We've had that.

  659. He's sovereign. Don't Don't try to

  660. overthrow him. You'll be in trouble like

  661. the devil is

  662. and the and the fallen angels are and

  663. all the unsaved people in the world.

  664. You're you're on the wrong side.

  665. But we're on the right side now. Why?

  666. Because God appointed

  667. unto those who would mourn in Zion to

  668. give what

  669. he says give. Don't ever overlook give.

  670. God, this is a gift from God. God's a

  671. very generous God. He's a loving God, a

  672. gracious God, a merciful God. Everything

  673. that we need as sinners, God is if we'll

  674. just come to him on his terms.

  675. And you see here, he's going to do what?

  676. The oil of joy for mourning and the

  677. garment of praise for the spirit of

  678. heaviness.

  679. There's that spirit again. That's the

  680. eternal spirit, the Holy Spirit, the

  681. spirit of God,

  682. that they might be called trees of

  683. righteousness, the planting of the Lord,

  684. that he might be glorified.

  685. What did God ever do that wasn't

  686. beautiful? You know, it's all over the

  687. scripture.

  688. The Garden of Eden and and I could we

  689. could name 10 other things that God did

  690. that was glorious and beautiful.

  691. God doesn't make a mistake. And then

  692. we're going to see as the book of

  693. Revelation wraps up, we're planted by a

  694. river.

  695. And this river is God. This river is the

  696. kingdom. This river is Jesus. The river

  697. is God himself.

  698. He's our river

  699. that's cleaned us up.

  700. That he might be glorified, not us. How

  701. did we get it?

  702. There's no merit there. He says give.

  703. So we praise God for his giving and for

  704. his great gift of his son, the Messiah.

  705. Psalm 23.

  706. Psalm

  707. 23. I'll bet you know this one by heart,

  708. Martha.

  709. Psalm 23.

  710. Here's the great shepherd.

  711. How can God shepherd us? He's in heaven.

  712. He shepherds us with our w with our

  713. shepherd in the church, our pastor.

  714. And and but we have a shepherd. The Holy

  715. Spirit, Jesus is the shepherd. And the

  716. Holy Spirit is the one who is is helping

  717. us here in this in this great song.

  718. So you know it's like the lady did

  719. remember when she come and she took a

  720. very precious and expensive

  721. uh vial of ointment and what' she do?

  722. She had to break it. Couldn't get it out

  723. of there without breaking it.

  724. So it was a great cost to her.

  725. So the alabaster box is just a symbol of

  726. the gladness that God has poured out on

  727. his own people when he has sent the Holy

  728. Spirit

  729. and his son and his word to us sinners

  730. that we might

  731. enjoy God. So

  732. this is not going to end.

  733. This this isn't we don't have temporary

  734. life or or we don't have reincarnation.

  735. We don't have those those things that

  736. that men come up with. We have eternal

  737. life that God has come up with and he's

  738. given it to us. We're going to live

  739. forever

  740. and ever and ever and ever. However many

  741. evers you want to put on it.

  742. And you know, David, David was a sinful

  743. man

  744. like us.

  745. How did he recover? How did he recoup?

  746. He He had the Holy Spirit, didn't he?

  747. And And you know, God communicated. God

  748. did God did the work in him.

  749. And that's what we need. We need God

  750. doing a work in us. We

  751. or we won't have any spiritual peace. We

  752. won't have any any um any understanding

  753. of these things. And David said, "He

  754. makes me to lie lie down in green

  755. pastures. He leads me beside the still

  756. waters.

  757. Those are two wonderful things.

  758. He restores my soul. Wow.

  759. You want your soul restored?

  760. The only one that can do it is Jesus.

  761. He leads me in the path of righteousness

  762. for his name's sake. See, God wants us

  763. on the righteous path.

  764. And he sent the Holy Spirit. these great

  765. spoils that we have now from the work of

  766. his son.

  767. And even Jesus is not finished. You

  768. know, he's his work on the cross is

  769. finished. You know, don't doubt that.

  770. It's over and done and accomplished. He

  771. come out of the grave. But where is he

  772. now? He's at the right hand of the

  773. father doing what? He's making

  774. intercession for us. He's growing his

  775. church. He's blessing his church. He's

  776. being worshiped by his church. But we

  777. still have to go through

  778. this life in the shadow of death. I will

  779. fear no evil.

  780. Why? Because he fears the great

  781. shepherd.

  782. And surely goodness and mercy will

  783. follow me all the days of my life. This

  784. is now.

  785. And then it gets better.

  786. I will dwell in the house of the Lord

  787. forever.

  788. You know what is it that God doesn't

  789. have an abundance of? You know, he's

  790. he's not a part of sin and evil. Don't

  791. take him over there. But God is good.

  792. God is love. God is mercy. God is grace.

  793. God is all these wonderful things. And

  794. if you don't know that, he's

  795. disappointed.

  796. He's disappointed that you don't know

  797. that.

  798. because he does want us to know this.

  799. Turn to Hebrews chapter 13.

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  800. And this is how the book of Hebrews

  801. ends.

  802. Very similar

  803. to what Isaiah said,

  804. the man of sorrow,

  805. but we're filled with joy and we're

  806. glad.

  807. And

  808. start in verse 10. We have an altar of

  809. which they have no right to eat.

  810. who serve the tabernacle.

  811. That's going backwards. For the bodies

  812. of those beasts and the blood is brought

  813. before the sanctuary by the high priest

  814. for sin that burned outside the camp.

  815. Wherefore Jesus also might sanctify the

  816. people with his own blood.

  817. He suffered outside the gate.

  818. So the man of sorrow did these things.

  819. He He's our He's our savior. He's our

  820. He's our redeemer.

  821. And we worship him and praise him and

  822. thank him for those very things.

  823. But it doesn't stop there. We want to go

  824. on. Let us go forth. Therefore,

  825. outside the camp doing whatbearing is

  826. reproach. People don't like Jesus. They

  827. don't like God's grace. They don't like

  828. that God's generous and God's a giver.

  829. And he says, "We have therefore that we

  830. make a continuing city, but we seek one

  831. to come. We get to heaven, it's going to

  832. be

  833. be a lot better."

  834. So heaven is,

  835. you know, all the things that we can say

  836. about heaven,

  837. you know, it's full of love.

  838. Um it's full of

  839. uh light. It's full of you know all

  840. these things eternal life. All these

  841. things that we can say about heaven.

  842. But now because of Jesus and what he did

  843. and who he is, heaven is filled with

  844. forgiveness now.

  845. And we can have this forgiveness

  846. through him and have this joy and have

  847. this love and this peace and this grace

  848. and this mercy

  849. and we can run our race with unspeakable

  850. joy

  851. as Paul said.

  852. And he says in verse 15,

  853. "Let us offer by the sacrifice

  854. of praise to God continually." What do

  855. we do? We praise God for his unspeakable

  856. gift.

  857. That's what we do. And the fruit of our

  858. lips, giving thanks to his name.

  859. Names are important.

  860. But to good and share forget not. For

  861. such sacrifices God

  862. is well pleased.

  863. Obey them that have watch over you.

  864. Verse 18. pray for them

  865. and and restore uh each other and and

  866. the God of peace

  867. that brought again from the dead, the

  868. Lord Jesus Christ, the great shepherd of

  869. the sheep through the blood of the

  870. everlasting covenant. How can we be at

  871. peace with God? He's holy. I'm sinful

  872. here. Here he tells them, "Make you

  873. perfect in every good work to do his

  874. will, working in you that which is well

  875. pleasing in his sight through Jesus

  876. Christ, to whom he glory forever and

  877. ever. Amen." So that's the purpose of

  878. the word. That's the purpose of the Holy

  879. Spirit is to help us um with these very

  880. things. Now turn over to Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  881. 2 or I'm sorry, chapter 12 verse two.

  882. you know where we're going.

  883. So the man of sorrows who was acquainted

  884. with our grief can now

  885. bring the spoils of heaven upon the

  886. children of God.

  887. And that's what the book of Hebrews says

  888. here in verse two.

  889. Where do we look?

  890. Got to be looking in the right place.

  891. Don't look to me.

  892. Look to your neighbor. Don't look to

  893. your church.

  894. Don't look to your friends.

  895. But look to Jesus.

  896. And we find him where? We find him in

  897. his word.

  898. He's the author and finisher of our

  899. faith.

  900. He brought it to us and he's going to

  901. end it. And we're going to spend

  902. eternity with him. Who for the joy that

  903. was set before him. I read the gospels

  904. and I never saw any of Jesus joy.

  905. Well, it's there.

  906. His joy was not like our joy, you know,

  907. how much is in our bank account,

  908. you know, or if we had a good day or a

  909. bad day.

  910. Jesus joy was to do the will of his

  911. father

  912. and he did it perfectly.

  913. And now us sinners have forgiveness and

  914. mercy. He endured the cross. He despised

  915. the shame

  916. and he sat down at the right hand of

  917. God. The scripture wants us to look past

  918. um what he did on the cross. It's so

  919. important.

  920. But he's still there. He's at the right

  921. hand of the father. So now heaven,

  922. what's the Bible say? Heaven's rejoicing

  923. over one sinner

  924. who repents.

  925. So that's what Jesus has done. He's

  926. brought a great gift, the gift and the

  927. precious gift of eternal life. Turn to

  928. Acts chapter 13.

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  929. And now you know the the the church is

  930. the body of Christ. And Jesus said that

  931. his joy came from doing the father's

  932. will as as difficult as that was for

  933. him.

  934. But doing those things brought him great

  935. joy.

  936. So the man of sorrows was also a man of

  937. joy. And his joy

  938. wasn't in the disciples around him. They

  939. let him down. His joy was in doing the

  940. will of his father to get the spoils

  941. from heaven

  942. to dump out on us sinners

  943. on this earth.

  944. How much how many uh attributes does God

  945. have?

  946. Take several messages to go through

  947. that.

  948. But just think how wonderful God is and

  949. and his divine supply.

  950. He's not getting low on anything. It's

  951. endless.

  952. And

  953. Jesus has brought this joy to us. The

  954. man of sorrows has brought this great

  955. joy to us through the Holy Spirit that

  956. is in us.

  957. And now when we we can be like Jesus, we

  958. can we can see everything and mess

  959. around us. But I'm going to but he took

  960. great joy in serving the father and

  961. doing the father's will. The early

  962. disciples, the early church, the early

  963. apostles as well. While they were

  964. persecuted and maligned and murdered,

  965. they found great joy in the ministry and

  966. the service that they rendered to God.

  967. And here's the one where they shook off

  968. the dust from their feet against them.

  969. And they came to Iconium.

  970. And

  971. who? The disciples. Not just the

  972. apostles,

  973. but the disciples. Everyone. The Holy

  974. Spirit is poured out on everyone that's

  975. in the body of Christ. Young or old. If

  976. you become a believer,

  977. you're going to receive the Holy Spirit

  978. the minute you get saved. It's a promise

  979. from God the Father. And you know, Jesus

  980. is our great high priest. Now, he he was

  981. uh you know, he was anointed

  982. um in a greater way. The man of sorrows

  983. uh was anointed in a greater way because

  984. he's our Messiah. He's God. So, we have

  985. a great high priest who, as Hebrews

  986. says, you know, he he doesn't know what

  987. we're going through. No, he does know

  988. what we're going through. And quite

  989. well.

  990. Turn to Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  991. Paul ties all these together for us in

  992. one verse.

  993. The promised Messiah brought the spoils

  994. of heaven upon this earth. That's where

  995. the church came from. No Christ, no

  996. church.

  997. And Jesus said, "No,

  998. the kingdom's on hold. We're going to do

  999. something

1000. better, more. We're going to save

  1001. Gentiles."

1002. And here are these Gentiles in Rome.

1003. And you know that the the Bible says

1004. beyond measure. He's going to he's going

1005. to do things beyond measure. Not

  1006. sparingly but greatly.

  1007. And here we have

1008. declared to be the son of God with

  1009. power.

  1010. Not sparingly

1011. according to the spirit of holiness.

  1012. There's our Holy Spirit.

1013. By the resurrection from the dead.

1014. So, we got the whole trinity involved in

1015. in our salvation, in our redemption, and

  1016. in our sanctification.

1017. You know, we're walking in the spirit.

1018. That's what God wants us to do. And he

1019. says if we It's positive. If we walk in

1020. the spirit, we won't fulfill the lust of

  1021. the flesh.

1022. Turn to Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  1023. Last verse.

  1024. Who's the good Samaritan?

1025. Jesus. He He saw us in need. He come to

  1026. our our aid.

1027. He's He is the good Samaritan.

1028. Well, how about Barnabas? You guys

  1029. remember Barnabas?

1030. He was the son of consolation.

1031. Whatever was going on, whatever trouble

1032. there was, he came to the rescue as best

1033. he could. And he did it so much and so

1034. often they started they had a nickname.

1035. Here comes the son of consolation.

1036. Well, we have a greater uh than

  1037. um Barnabas.

  1038. It's Jesus.

1039. And we see here in chapter 2 and verse

1040. 25, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem

1041. whose name was Simeon. And the same man,

1042. he was righteous, devout, waiting for

  1043. what?

1044. Consolation of Israel. Who's that? Oh,

1045. that's the man of sorrows.

  1046. That's our savior. That's our redeemer.

1047. And the Holy Spirit was upon him doing

1048. what? So he'd know that Jesus was the

  1049. consolation of Israel.

1050. And it was re revealed unto him by the

1051. Holy Spirit that he would not see death

1052. until he had seen the Lord's Christ.

1053. And he came by the spirit

1054. into the temple. And when the parents

1055. brought in the child Jesus to do for him

1056. after the custom of the law, then took

1057. he him up into his arms. Bless God.

1058. Notice what he says. Lord, now let your

1059. servant depart in peace according to

1060. your word. For my eyes have seen your

  1061. salvation

1062. which has been prepared before the face

1063. of all people. a light to lighten the

1064. Gentiles and the glory of your people

1065. Israel. And Joseph and Mary marveled at

1066. the things which were spoken of him. And

1067. Simon blessed them and said unto Mary,

1068. "Behold, this child is set for the fall

1069. and the rising of many in Israel, and

1070. for a sign that will be spoken against.

1071. Yet a sword will pierce through my own

1072. soul and that the thoughts of many may

1073. be revealed. Jesus is the consolation of

  1074. Israel.

1075. We come to you, Father, this morning. We

1076. come to you, Lord Jesus. We come to you,

1077. Holy Spirit. We thank you that you're a

  1078. great God,

1079. one that we can't fully understand even

1080. in our own minds. You're greater than we

1081. are and you've accomplished this great

  1082. redemption for us.

1083. Thank you, Jesus, for dying for us

1084. and securing the spoils of heaven uh for

  1085. us sinners.

1086. And this is all the the grace of God.

1087. This is all the gift of God that comes

1088. to us by faith in your son. So we thank

1089. you for these great things. Thank you

1090. for your word that makes these things

1091. known. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

1092. Lord, as we go from this place

  1093. loving you more,

  1094. trusting you more.

1095. May the power of your love and the light

1096. of your word shine well to a sin

1097. darkened world as we go from this place.
