  1. for all of them. And we welcome you here

  2. today.

  3. If you're new with us, we've been

  4. studying a series on the resurrection of

  5. Jesus Christ, the physical resurrection

  6. of Jesus Christ. This is basic basic

  7. Christianity, isn't it? And it's

  8. something we should be experts in.

  9. I mean, experts. If there's anything in

  10. the Bible you should know well, it's

  11. about the death, resurre death death,

  12. burial, and resurrection of Jesus

  13. Christ. We should know that backwards

  14. and forwards because everything is based

  15. on that, right? If Christ isn't risen,

  16. our faith is what? Vain. Were yet in our

  17. sins. So the resurrection is absolutely

  18. important for us to know. And it's part

  19. not just for our sanctification and our

  20. edification, but it's also something

  21. very important for our ministry to those

  22. that don't know the Lord. Because part

  23. of being saved is is believing in the

  24. resurrection, right? We don't just

  25. believe in his death for our sins. We

  26. believe that he was raised again for our

  27. justification.

  28. So our Lord's not a private person. He's

  29. a public person. He's the seed of the

  30. woman. He's the seed of David. He's the

  31. son of God. And we we don't just believe

  32. anyone was risen from the dead. We

  33. believe that Jesus Christ, the seed of

  34. David, was raised from the dead. He was

  35. God's appointed one to deal with the sin

  36. problem. So, I'd like to call your

  37. attention to the book of Acts if you

  38. would.

  39. We're doing a couple of things at once

  40. in our church right now. Usually, we do

  41. book studies verse by verse through

  42. books of the Bible, which we're still

  43. doing the book of Jeremiah uh on uh on

  44. Wednesday nights. But uh besides doing

  45. book studies, sometimes we just do a

  46. series just to give our minds a rest and

  47. do something a little different. And so

  48. we're doing two serieses at once. And

  49. one of them is a series on the

  50. resurrection. And so I call your

  51. attention to the book of Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  52. Acts chapter 1 as we begin this morning.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  53. And you're c if you're new with us,

  54. you're catching us in uh midseries.

  55. We've always already had several

  56. messages on the resurrection of Jesus.

  57. Dr. Luke writes, "The former treatise

  58. have I made O Theophilos of all that

  59. Jesus both began both to do and teach."

  60. Luke, Dr. Luke is the writer. He wrote

  61. the Gospel of Luke, which is the former

  62. treatise he's referring to.

  63. And that the book of Luke was all about

  64. what Jesus both began to do and teach.

  65. What's the book of Acts? It's about what

  66. he continues to do and teach.

  67. Are you with me? This is two volume

  68. work.

  69. So the gospel of Luke is what about what

  70. Jesus began to do and to teach.

  71. But the book of Acts, the second volume,

  72. is what the risen Lord Jesus, ascended

  73. Lord Jesus, continues to do and teach.

  74. And so the Lord's working in the world

  75. today, even before his second coming,

  76. he's working every day through the Holy

  77. Spirit, through the church. He's doing

  78. things. He's the head of the church.

  79. And he's sitted at the right hand of

  80. God.

  81. But so he he Luke is referring back to

  82. his former work of 24 chapters and now

  83. he starts another work of 28 chapters to

  84. disciple one guy,

  85. one man,

  86. the lover of God who'd already been

  87. discipled

  88. to a certain degree but was being

  89. discipled more

  90. by Dr. Luke. And how did Dr. Luke

  91. disciple him? 24 chapters of the book of

  92. Luke of the birth, the life, the death,

  93. the resurrection of Jesus. And now

  94. that's and now he's talking about what

  95. Jesus is was dead, but he's alive now

  96. and he's still working. He's still doing

  97. things from the third heaven

  98. until the day which he was taken up

  99. after through the Holy Spirit had given

  100. commandments to the apostles whom he

  101. chosen to whom he showed himself alive

  102. after his passion by many infallible

  103. proofs being seen of them 40 days

  104. speaking of the things pertaining to the

  105. kingdom of God.

  106. And I think we'll sign off right here

  107. for that. And let's have a word of

  108. prayer. Father, we ask your blessing and

  109. grace upon our time together. Accomplish

  110. your purposes, we ask. Amen.

  111. Now, if you were to put a title on my

  112. message,

  113. we one way we could say it is discipling

  114. the disciple.

  115. Discipling the discip. This guy

  116. Theophilus was already discipled by

  117. others and he'd been baptized and he

  118. already knew stuff. You read Luke

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  119. chapter 1, he already wasn't ignorant.

  120. But now he's going to learn more. And

  121. that's Matthew 28, right? You go into

  122. all the world, teach all nations. That's

  123. part of it. You teach them and you

  124. baptize them. You teach them again.

  125. Teaching them all things whatever I've

  126. commanded you to the end of of the age.

  127. And so and so here here we can call this

  128. discipling disciple discipled.

  129. and uh uh and and certainly it's going

  130. on.

  131. Um several years ago I preached through

  132. the Gospel of Luke and also the book of

  133. Acts. Actually I reversed it. I preached

  134. through Acts first and then went to

  135. Luke. We spent years and years just on

  136. those two books. So there's an in-depth

  137. study on all of this that we've already

  138. done. My interest this morning is not to

  139. repeat those studies. My interest is not

  140. to go into another book study. My

  141. interest is to dip into this and look at

  142. the resurrection

  143. specifically that's behind everything

  144. else.

  145. And

  146. uh very very important stuff.

  147. And also remember we've been keyed off

  148. Matthew 28 where 11 disciples went and

  149. were met by Jesus. And I believe there

  150. were others there too. 500 at once. And

  151. Jesus said, "Teach all nations." And he

  152. was teaching them to observe all things

  153. whatever I've commanded you and I'm with

  154. you always to the end of the world. What

  155. does the word mate mean? It's a

  156. disciple. It means a learner. A disciple

  157. is a learner.

  158. A disciple is someone who learns things.

  159. A disciper is someone that teaches

  160. someone some things, right?

  161. And the picture here is that those that

  162. have been discipled by the risen Jesus

  163. are discipled all nations. That's a big

  164. that's a big assignment.

  165. Only the disciples can disciple all

  166. nations. It takes a disciple

  167. to disciple another person. It's the

  168. disciples are going to be discipling.

  169. It's those that have been taught that

  170. are going to be doing the teaching. It's

  171. those that have been trained are going

  172. to be doing the training.

  173. It's those that are discipled by Jesus,

  174. the Jesus who has all authority in

  175. heaven and earth that's been given a

  176. universal message to go into all the

  177. world.

  178. There's no place that we shouldn't be

  179. interested in. There's no country,

  180. there's no tribe, there's no people

  181. group

  182. that we shouldn't be interested in.

  183. Uh, none of us would aspire to this. No

  184. one would dare do this unless we have

  185. legitimate authority.

  186. And you're you're going to all nations.

  187. Well, who are you to do that? Well,

  188. Jesus sent me

  189. the one that the one the risen Lord. We

  190. live in a world of empire builders,

  191. don't we? You ever think about that?

  192. Uh remember Nebuchadnezzar isn't this

  193. great Babylon that I built and then you

  194. come another empire building the Persian

  195. Empire and then the Greek Empire and

  196. then the Roman Empire. All these empires

  197. not satisfied what they got. They got to

  198. move out militarily and expand and so

  199. forth. We still got empire buildings

  200. uh empire builders today.

  201. But empires are not just built by

  202. armies. Some are built by philosophers.

  203. Some are built by religions.

  204. Uh there's different religions on the

  205. march. There's different philosophies on

  206. the march. And they want to bend

  207. everybody to their viewpoint.

  208. They're not satisfied with just

  209. believing it themselves. They want

  210. everybody to be like them

  211. and it's their mission.

  212. Uh, is it okay to

  213. take a business internationally? Yeah.

  214. Yeah. Anybody that's traveled knows

  215. there's McDonald's and Wendy's and Pizza

  216. Huts everywhere. There's nothing wrong

  217. with that.

  218. But

  219. uh it's it's it's in the human DNA

  220. to expand

  221. and to grow and to influence beyond

  222. where you are and who you are. We know

  223. that from Genesis chapter 1 where Adam

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  224. and Eve were very clearly told in the

  225. dominion covenant to uh

  226. I I want you to be fruitful and multiply

  227. and fill the earth.

  228. You got a job. Be fruitful and multiply.

  229. And what are you supposed to do after

  230. that? The earth. Take dominion over it.

  231. Take dominion over the fish of the sea

  232. and the animals of the earth. Take

  233. dominion. That's the dementia covenant.

  234. And but we live in a broken world and

  235. the fall of man has distorted and

  236. damaged that commission in Genesis 1

    Genesis 1:26

  237. verse 26.

  238. Uh and the reason we have that dominion

  239. covenant is every human being since Adam

  240. and Eve is born in the image of God.

  241. Isn't that true? Genesis 1:26, the

    Genesis 1:26

  242. Godhead said, "Let us create man in our

  243. image, and let those in our image have

  244. dominion over the fish of the sea, the

  245. birds of the air, and the animals of the

  246. earth."

  247. So, we've been created to with a primal

  248. need to expand, to explore, to extend,

  249. to externalize.

  250. But the fall of man has distorted and

  251. damaged that.

  252. We live in a broken world. We live in a

  253. world that's uh uh uh

  254. not in the right relationship with God

  255. and not in the relationship with each

  256. other. Salvation starts working on that.

  257. And the creator stepped in and became

  258. the redeemer and said, "I will build my

  259. church. I'm not just going to fix

  260. people so they can take dominion over

  261. the world of the animals and the

  262. creatures and stuff.

  263. I'm building my church.

  264. So God put that in us to expand,

  265. to explore,

  266. to

  267. take over authority.

  268. But Jesus said, "I've got I'll build my

  269. church and the gates of hell will not

  270. prevail against it." This is a this is a

  271. battle we're going to win. The church is

  272. going to win.

  273. And we know this current planet's going

  274. to burn up according to Revelation

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  275. chapter 21 and 22 and there's going to

  276. be a new heaven and new earth. But guess

  277. what we'll be doing in that new heaven

  278. and earth. Then we'll be doing after no

  279. more gospel to preach. We'll be

  280. expanding and exploring and and all

  281. kinds of stuff for all eternity.

  282. So it's in our DNA. It's it's something

  283. bound in us. And we're told to be

  284. fruitful and multiply physically. That

  285. command has never been rescended.

  286. People say we don't have we don't

  287. population explosion. We got the

  288. opposite. We don't have enough people.

  289. Look at that's a whole other message.

  290. That's never been rescended. God told

  291. Noah after the flood to be fruitful and

  292. multiply and fill the earth. It's

  293. repeated in the Old Testament. It's

  294. repeated in the New Testament.

  295. But the church is also to spiritually be

  296. fruitful and multiply.

  297. Um,

  298. and we have to have our priorities.

  299. Right. Right.

  300. It's good to have more physical

  301. descendants. We need that.

  302. I did my best. I just made it to four

  303. kids. That kind of multiplied, right?

  304. Whether you have no kids or one kid, you

  305. ought to try. And so uh but there's

  306. something that uh we need to grasp.

  307. Being fruitful multiply has never been

  308. recorded. We've sinned

  309. and but we do have this this deal to uh

  310. spread the gospel.

  311. And if we spread the gospel, we cannot

  312. be tied down with unnecessary things.

  313. Many of you flown in airplanes

  314. and something in if you're flying in an

  315. airplane there's something in an

  316. aircraft

  317. they always you know they do all the

  318. routine where they tell you the mask

  319. comes down and this and that if you have

  320. to exit what leave your luggage

  321. leave your luggage.

  322. Why? Because if you have to get off the

  323. plane, it might blow up and it crash

  324. landing. You You're not trying to drag.

  325. Oh, we open the bin and we get more

  326. luggage and nobody gets out because

  327. somebody's trying to find their luggage.

  328. Leave your luggage. No matter what it

  329. is,

  330. and get out the exit door as fast as you

  331. can. Over the wing, out in front, out in

  332. back. Everybody go. And don't hang

  333. around. Boom.

  334. Leave your luggage.

  335. Some of us have too much luggage.

  336. And God says, "Leave your luggage. Get

  337. on the move for me.

  338. Cut your life down to where you can

  339. learn to live with a little bit less.

  340. Get the gospel out to other people."

  341. And may God help us. Are we willing to

  342. do that?

  343. Do we see that as a priority?

  344. If the plane's on fire and somebody's

  345. trying to get their luggage, is that a

  346. loving thing to do?

  347. I got to get my If the plane's on fire,

  348. I'm I'm out of there. You know, I'm

  349. going to try other people get out, but

  350. I'm not going to drag my try to hold

  351. things up to get my luggage. And if you

  352. don't think that's a problem, just

  353. remember the last time you landed and

  354. everybody stands up and they're trying

  355. to get their luggage and you're waiting

  356. 15 minutes to try to get out of the

  357. airplane minimum.

  358. You do that in emergency, you're going

  359. to die.

  360. So the apostles had to customize their

  361. life. Christians have to customize their

  362. life. We can travel light

  363. because we've got a job to do

  364. to get the gospel out. And there's some

  365. things we need to leave behind, if you

  366. will.

  367. And that's really what the book of Acts

  368. is all about.

  369. These people had priorities.

  370. These people, Jesus was building his

  371. church and they knew who they were and

  372. they embraced in faith the risen Christ.

  373. And they were saying, "Our hope is built

  374. on nothing less than Jesus blood and

  375. righteousness." And they were they they

  376. were people who would sell stuff

  377. to help others. They were people who

  378. were sacrificing financial. They were

  379. people sacrificing time, sacrificing

  380. their lives

  381. because it was that important.

  382. How could they do that?

  383. They knew Jesus had risen.

  384. 100%.

  385. No question at all in their mind.

  386. None.

  387. You know, if we know Christ is risen and

  388. we know we're going to be risen, then it

  389. kind of changes the way we think about

  390. life here. This life, if one soul's

  391. worth more than the whole world, then I

  392. better see the value of other people and

  393. try to reach them.

  394. The church is built on people who know

  395. Jesus is. The church is uh is uh built

  396. on those who've been uh believed in

  397. Christ and trusted in him. The Bible

  398. says if you confess with your mouth the

  399. Lord Jesus and believe in your heart

  400. that God's raised him from the dead,

  401. you'll be saved.

  402. And so those are basic things.

  403. Now, there are people that are ever

  404. learning and never able to come to the

  405. knowledge of the truth,

  406. but the church is in the truth business.

  407. And it's not a little dabble, do you?

  408. Some of you remember the broker.

  409. It's not a little dabble.

  410. Some churches are based on that.

  411. Little dab will do you. Sermonets for

  412. Christians.

  413. You don't need to be too serious about

  414. them.

  415. Uh but the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  416. is just fills the book of Acts. This

  417. week I just read and I started counting.

  418. How many times is the resurrection

  419. explicitly referred to in the book of

  420. Acts? How many times it it is it

  421. implicitly referred to in the book of

  422. I just was curious about that and I

  423. found multiple cases where it's

  424. explicitly mentioned and also various

  425. cases where it's implied even though

  426. it's not the word resurrection is not

  427. being used

  428. over 30

  429. over 30 times the resurrection is

  430. mentioned explicitly or implicitly in a

  431. book that's 28 chapters long.

  432. So, it's kind of focused on the

  433. resurrection, right?

  434. The book of Acts is very much focused on

  435. the resurrection. It dominates the book

  436. of Acts. And

  437. may God help us

  438. to be dominated with this idea in our

  439. mind and this fact in our mind.

  440. Leon Morris was a Church of England uh

  441. New Testament scholar, Greek scholar,

  442. very prominent fellow

  443. and he said this. We face a problem when

  444. we turn to the gospels. If we

  445. concentrate on what Jesus did and said,

  446. we may overlook the fact that each of

  447. the evangelist is a theologian.

  448. There's the theology of Matthew,

  449. theology of Mark, theology of Luke,

  450. theology of John. They each present the

  451. same material, similar material, but a

  452. little differently, focusing a little

  453. bit.

  454. But we need to see not only what Jesus

  455. said and did, but also how each

  456. evangelist understood what he said.

  457. But then he said this, when we study any

  458. one of the gospels, it's legitimate to

  459. look at the selection of material the

  460. writers made and ask why he made it and

  461. what he means by writing as he did. But

  462. it is Jesus who matters, not the

  463. evangelists.

  464. You can get so caught up in Matthew's

  465. theology, Matthew's approach to the the

  466. Jewish people in the kingdom or Mark's

  467. approach uh on uh uh on service or

  468. Luke's approach or John's approach on

  469. the deity of Christ, you forget what

  470. it's all about.

  471. All of them believe in the resurrection.

  472. All of them are into it.

  473. And when we come to the public ministry

  474. of Jesus, we have only a small

  475. proportion of what Jesus teaching in

  476. life and a disproportionate amount of

  477. information about his death and

  478. resurrection. Right? Most of every

  479. gospel

  480. is heavy on one end. It's like a

  481. tadpole. Someone said every gospel is

  482. like a tadpole. It's big on one end.

  483. There's an awful lot of material on the

  484. last week of Jesus

  485. and it's weighted. Matthew is weighted.

  486. There's more about that than anything

  487. else. There's more about that in Mark

  488. than anything else. There's more about

  489. that in Luke than anything else. You

  490. know a little bit about his birth and

  491. and you know a little bit about his

  492. childhood. You know a little bit about

  493. his three-year ministry, but they're all

  494. heavily weighted on that last week.

  495. Why?

  496. Because all of them, even though they

  497. have a little different emphasis and are

  498. looking at Jesus from a little different

  499. angle, are emphasizing the important

  500. thing is that he died on the cross for

  501. our sins, rose again.

  502. And important to get this now, when you

  503. go to chapter one, and some I didn't

  504. read this far for time sake.

  505. They were one apostle short because

  506. Judas hung himself. You know, he was an

  507. apostate. He wasn't saved. He hung

  508. himself and couldn't live with himself

  509. after he he denied the Lord.

  510. And they had to replace him. And chapter

  511. one is we need we're one apostle short.

  512. So they they they had some what's the

  513. qualities? They have to be with Jesus

  514. from John the Baptist all the way

  515. through.

  516. Right? That's three years.

  517. And all the apostles were baptized by

  518. John before they came to know Jesus.

  519. And so that was a qualification that

  520. they gave. They had to be there the

  521. whole three years because we don't just

  522. believe anyone was raised from the dead.

  523. We remember we believe this certain one

  524. that was virgin born predicted the Old

  525. Testament uh uh ratified by John the

  526. Baptist who baptized him and lived those

  527. three years the perfect life no one's

  528. ever lived. So

  529. there was 120 Christians in Acts chapter

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  530. 1 and they they were to be witnesses of

  531. the resurrection but they wanted to get

  532. some they wanted to get they want the

  533. number to be 12 12 tribes of Israel. We

  534. need 12 apostles to stand up and so

  535. forth and so on.

  536. And so they did something very very

  537. interesting.

  538. The people that are apostles have to

  539. have seen the risen Lord and they had to

  540. know it was the risen Lord and not

  541. somebody posing as the

  542. risen Lord.

  543. My wife and I

  544. I won't say wasted because we only watch

  545. about one hour of television

  546. a day usually detective show. Have you

  547. ever been to a detective show? Watch

  548. one. somebody's murdered or somebody's

  549. killed and the detectives and everybody,

  550. they go in and they pull the person's in

  551. the morg and they pull the they pull the

  552. blanket back and say to the mother or

  553. the wife or the uh friend, is this so

  554. and so,

  555. right?

  556. They bring somebody in that they know

  557. knew that person well. They don't bring

  558. somebody in that met them on the street

  559. for five minutes. They bring somebody in

  560. if they've got them. Who's the mother?

  561. Who's the father? Who's the brother or

  562. sister? Who's the one that knew them

  563. over a long period of time? So when they

  564. look at that body, they can say that's

  565. them.

  566. Well, guess what? The people who

  567. preached the resurrection of Jesus knew

  568. Jesus. They were with him for three

  569. years, day and night.

  570. They knew him well.

  571. And yes, the resurrection body of Jesus

  572. was changed. It was a little bit

  573. different. They didn't always recognize

  574. him right away any more than you and I

  575. would recognize people that we didn't

  576. expect to be alive.

  577. But then when they look closely, oh,

  578. that's him. No question.

  579. No question.

  580. And so you got 120 qualified witnesses.

  581. Some are more qualified than others. And

  582. it's the ones that knew him the longest.

  583. That's the ones were with him for John

  584. the Baptist on.

  585. They're the ones who going to stand up

  586. apostles.

  587. Now that brings us to something also

  588. very interesting. He's taught on this

  589. last week.

  590. Nobody in the first century

  591. denied the empty tomb.

  592. Nobody.

  593. The enemies who hated Jesus wanted to

  594. stop the whole thing. They acknowledged

  595. the empty tomb. The believers

  596. acknowledged the empty tomb. Nobody in

  597. the first century

  598. even even thought about saying the tomb

  599. is not empty. We already taught on that.

  600. Both the enemies of Jesus and the

  601. friends of Jesus believed the tomb was

  602. empty.

  603. Two members of the Sanhedrin buried him

  604. in that tomb.

  605. Other members of the Sanhedrin

  606. unbelievers wanted to guard that tomb so

  607. nobody would steal it.

  608. But everybody knew the tim tomb was

  609. empty. Nobody in the first century

  610. denied the empty tomb. The enemies and

  611. the friends agreed on one thing. The

  612. tomb is empty.

  613. Um kind of important.

  614. So the book of Acts is based on the fact

  615. the tomb is empty. The messages keep

  616. saying it's empty

  617. and and so forth. Nobody even argued

  618. about that any much because they're

  619. pretty much agreed on.

  620. Now Dr. Luke has done his homework.

  621. He had time to do it when Paul was in

  622. prison. Uh Dr. Luke had nothing to do.

  623. So he interviewed all the people way

  624. back to Mary

  625. and he got this the everything from I

  626. believe the Virgin Mary about how Jesus

  627. was born and John the Baptist was born

  628. and all of that stuff.

  629. And Luke uh was uh a investigator and a

  630. historian of great ability

  631. and he he even joined Paul in his some

  632. of his missionary journeys. When you

  633. move from Luke in the Gospel of Ma Acts,

  634. you get the we sections. Now Luke is

  635. alone.

  636. So Luke knew some things firsthand, but

  637. he knew other things by people who were

  638. there.

  639. There was a I mentioned this last time,

  640. but Gary Habermass has listed several

  641. people who are experts in archaeology

  642. and New Testament. One was Sir William

  643. Ramsey. He was a 19th century Scottish

  644. archaeologist. He was not a Christian.

  645. He was an archaeologist dealing with

  646. Turkey and and Asia Minor. And uh he

  647. died in 1939, I believe.

  648. But after he investigated

  649. Turkey and the archaeological sites and

  650. Israel, the archaeological sites, he

  651. said, "Luke is a historian of the first

  652. rank. This guy got his tax."

  653. Now, after he realized that, he even

  654. down to the little things, he became a

  655. believer and trusted Christ. and Sherwin

  656. White in you died in 1993. He was an

  657. ancient historian taught at Oxford. He

  658. said for acts the confirmation of

  659. historicity is overwhelming.

  660. It's overwhelming.

  661. Luke was not only accurate, he was

  662. accurate. Accurate.

  663. And Donald Greth who was a New Testament

  664. British scholar in 199 died in 1992.

  665. He said the era has now passed when the

  666. history of the axe can with any

  667. plausibility

  668. be discounted.

  669. Everybody knows Luke was accurate.

  670. Even non-Christians know Luke was

  671. accurate. They might debate about a few

  672. little things here and there, but

  673. basically they said this is amazing.

  674. It's truthful.

  675. Got the mileage right when they're

  676. sailing. here. He's got the towns right.

  677. He's got the distance between the towns.

  678. He's got all that stuff. He's got the

  679. people that were living at the time. He

  680. did his homework.

  681. Now, having said all of that,

  682. Luke was a third generation

  683. person,

  684. but he talked to first generation

  685. followers.

  686. First generation would be who?

  687. John the Baptist parents,

  688. Mary and Joseph.

  689. I'll call them first generation.

  690. Second generation would be apostles.

  691. Well, they were first generation in the

  692. sense they'd been with Jesus since John

  693. the Baptist, but they the apostles were

  694. really kind of second generation. None

  695. of them were hanging out in the manger.

  696. None of them where Jesus was born. Uh

  697. they did know John the Baptist, but

  698. whether they knew his parents, we don't

  699. know. But Mary knew. Mary knew all of

  700. them.

  701. And Mary was his source for the birth of

  702. Jesus. Mary was a source for the birth

  703. of John the Baptist and all that really

  704. early stuff.

  705. And the apostles were his source for the

  706. three years with Jesus.

  707. And then Paul was the source for more

  708. because Luke even traveled with him.

  709. So Luke was what I would call a third

  710. generation uh Christian. The apostles

  711. were second generation uh not second

  712. generation Christian but second

  713. generation witnesses and Elizabeth and

  714. Zachchariah and John the Baptist and

  715. Mary and Joseph were first generation.

  716. Now, I'm old enough to know

  717. I'm

  718. I'm uh I was in Athens when this church

  719. started.

  720. That was over 50 years ago.

  721. So, I was like first generation, second

  722. generation, third generation. I I I span

  723. that.

  724. And so no doubt there were people plenty

  725. of people for Luke to talk to

  726. to know what happened 60 years before

  727. his time or 50 years before.

  728. And plus he's writing inspired

  729. scripture. Now the twel apostles were

  730. replaced. Paul was a baker's dozen

  731. apostle. He was the apostle of the

  732. gentile. He was like number 13. He was a

  733. special apostle to do a special work

  734. that came in later.

  735. When you come to Acts chapter 2, you're

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  736. in Jerusalem, the very city where Jesus

  737. was murdered and buried.

  738. City he was crucified and where he was

  739. buried. Peter stood up and preached to

  740. thousands of people who were there for

  741. the day of Pentecost.

  742. And those people were from 17 different

  743. nations.

  744. Jewish people who came to Jerusalem from

  745. 17 named places around the Roman Empire.

  746. And they saw the Holy Spirit.

  747. They saw they heard the speaking in

  748. tongues. They heard Peter's message.

  749. They heard all of that. They heard him

  750. quote Psalm 16 and Psalm 110.

  751. And Peter charges the Jewish leadership

  752. with reicide.

  753. What's reicide? You know what homicide

  754. is? Homicide is when you kill a man or a

  755. woman. Homicide.

  756. Reicide is when you kill the king

  757. and Jesus was the king. Oh, deocide

  758. would fit too. They just killed God.

  759. God, man.

  760. So Peter stood up and charged them all

  761. and 3,000 people got saved that day. Got

  762. baptized that day and entered the

  763. church. 3,000 one sermon.

  764. And then in Acts three, they healed the

  765. crippled man. And the church grew to

  766. 4,000 or 5,000. Two more 2,000 plus

  767. more. So the church is busting at the

  768. seams. And Peter and John said, "Why are

  769. you looking at us?" said, "We did

  770. something to this guy. Jesus did it.

  771. We didn't do it. Jesus from heaven did

  772. it."

  773. An amazing thing.

  774. So, that's kind of where we are here.

  775. And then you move on. If you turn with

  776. me to Acts 4, verse 33,

    Acts 4:33

  777. bear with me just a little bit.

  778. This is speaking of Jerusalem.

  779. With great power gave the apostles

  780. witness of the what? Of the resurrection

  781. of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was

  782. upon them all with great power.

  783. People were selling the farms. They were

  784. selling houses and they were getting

  785. persecuted. People others were losing

  786. their job. They're sharing their goods

  787. temporarily because of the persecution.

  788. And with great power,

  789. the apostles gave witness of the

  790. resurrection of the Lord Jesus. The

  791. authorities kept telling them to stop

  792. and they just kept preaching.

  793. They kept preaching. They didn't stop

  794. just because they were told to stop. In

  795. chapter 5 verse 29, then Peter and the

  796. other apostles answered after they were

  797. told to stop. 529 of Acts,

  798. we ought to obey God rather than men,

  799. the God of of our fathers, raised up

  800. Jesus, whom you slew and hanged on a

  801. tree. Him God exalted with his right

  802. hand to be a prince and savior to give

  803. repentance to Israel and forgiveness of

  804. sins. And we're his witnesses of these

  805. things. And so is the Holy Spirit whom

  806. God hath given to them that obey him. So

  807. they just disobeyed the authorities that

  808. had the power of life and death over and

  809. backed them off.

  810. And so if you go to 540, chapter 5:40

  811. to him they agreed. And when they called

  812. the apostles and beaten them, they

  813. commanded they should not speak in the

  814. name of Jesus and let him go.

  815. And they departed from the presence of

  816. the council rejoicing. They were counted

  817. worthy to suffer shame for his name. And

  818. daily, daily, daily, not one day of the

  819. week, every day of the week. Every day

  820. of the week,

  821. daily in the temple and in every house.

  822. They cease not to teach and preach Jesus

  823. Christ. That's intense. I mean, they

  824. didn't even take a day off. Just did it

  825. every day.

  826. Every day.

  827. And so they couldn't kill the Christians

  828. fast enough. Church just started

  829. multiplying, multiplying

  830. more and more.

  831. And you move through the book of Acts

  832. and you see all of these things. Then

  833. Paul gets saved. He was the main

  834. persecutor. He was killing Christians.

  835. That was his thing until the risen Jesus

  836. made it. and immediately went into the

  837. synagogue and preached that Jesus is the

  838. Christ and now the chief enemy of

  839. Christianity has become the chief

  840. promote pro proponent of Christianity.

  841. All of this all the way through the book

  842. of Acts turn with me to Acts 17 just for

  843. time sake because there's plenty of

  844. other verses.

  845. No, stop off in chapter 10 if you will.

  846. Verse 36.

  847. The early church started with Jews, Jews

  848. only, and then they spread out to

  849. Samaritans, half Jews. And now through

  850. the Holy Spirit's guiding, they're going

  851. to full-blooded Gentiles.

  852. I hope that's what we do, right? Reach

  853. the pe to others that are like us. Reach

  854. to people who are a little bit like us,

  855. and then preach to people that aren't

  856. like us at all.

  857. We all got our comfort zones, right?

  858. And uh so may God help us to get out of

  859. our comfort zone. The early church got

  860. out of their comfort zone. Peter did. He

  861. got criticized for you went into

  862. Gentiles and you ate with them. You

  863. can't do that.

  864. There's something wrong with you, Peter.

  865. And but Peter answered, "Well, God's

  866. taught me not to call any man unclean."

  867. And so in Acts chapter 10 verse 36,

    Acts 10:36

  868. Peter starts preaching to Cornelius, a

  869. Roman centurion. And I'll go back to

  870. verse 34. You remember the sheet coming

  871. down out of heaven and all the Chinese

  872. food in it? Oh, I mean

  873. uh Mexican food, whatever it was,

  874. Italian food.

  875. Rise, Peter, kill and eat. I've never

  876. eaten anything unclean. I've never had

  877. lobster. I've never had any of that

  878. stuff. I don't eat that stuff. I'm a

  879. good Jew. I obey the food laws.

  880. Finally, God said, "What God has

  881. cleansed, don't call common."

  882. The food laws are over. They had a

  883. temporary purpose.

  884. And you can eat anything now, Peter. But

  885. that's not the real lesson.

  886. Everybody everywhere

  887. needs to hear about Jesus.

  888. Peter was stuck. Sometimes we get stuck,

  889. right? I I talk to people that are like

  890. me.

  891. I don't go too much out of my comfort

  892. zone.

  893. Well, what the Lord was trying to do

  894. with Peter was get him out of his

  895. comfort zone, but not just Peter, the

  896. whole church out of their comfort zone.

  897. A lot of times we talk to people like

  898. us, but we don't talk to people not like

  899. us. especially if they're a Buddhist or

  900. a Muslim or a or something else that I

  901. don't want to get into that discussion.

  902. You're just nervous about it.

  903. And but Peter learned something and if

  904. you look in uh verse 34, he admits it.

  905. 10:34 Peter opened his mouth and said,

  906. "Of a truth I perceive God's no

  907. respector of persons.

  908. I've got it all wrong.

  909. I need to dilate my heart.

  910. I need to look at people that are not

  911. like me, that don't eat the way I eat,

  912. and don't live the way I live.

  913. But in every nation, verse 35, he that

  914. fears him and works righteousness is

  915. accepted of him.

  916. The word of God, the word which God sent

  917. to the children of Israel, preaching

  918. peace by Jesus. He's Lord of all. that

  919. word I say you know this is very

  920. interesting Peter wasn't the first

  921. person that told Cornelius about Jesus

  922. that was common knowledge

  923. about Jesus

  924. but Peter preached it Peter applied it

  925. and so he says but in every nation God

  926. is no respector of person and And he

  927. says verse 36, "The word which God sent

  928. unto the children of Israel preaching

  929. peace by Jesus. He's Lord of all." That

  930. word I say, you know. You've heard about

  931. it. I It wasn't done in the corner. You

  932. all know about Jesus. Well, I'm here to

  933. preach Jesus to you. I'm here to

  934. confront you. I'm here to minister to

  935. you and show you there's a door open for

  936. you.

  937. How many people have you ever talked to

  938. and they said, "I can't be saved. I'm

  939. not good enough. God would never accept

  940. me.

  941. because of what I've done. They say

  942. stuff stuff like well Peter says uh very

  943. clearly

  944. verse 37 that word I say you know which

  945. was published throughout all Judea and

  946. began from Galilee after the baptism

  947. which John preached. How God anointed

  948. Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit

  949. with power who went about doing good

  950. healing all that were oppressed of the

  951. devil. For God was with with him. And we

  952. are witnesses of all things which he did

  953. both in the land of Jews and in

  954. Jerusalem whom they slew and hanged on a

  955. tree. Him God raised up the third day

  956. and showed him openly, not to all the

  957. people, but to witnesses chosen before

  958. by God, even to us who did eat and drink

  959. with him after he rose from the dead. He

  960. didn't put 40 days on there, but it was

  961. 40 days of eating and drinking

  962. with the risen Lord.

  963. It wasn't. Is that him? Might be him.

  964. Now we see him. Now we don't 40 days of

  965. eating with him

  966. after he rose and dead. That's Acts

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  967. chapter 1. And he commanded us to preach

  968. to the people and to testify as he who

  969. was ordained by God to be the judge of

  970. the living and the dead. And to him all

  971. the prophets give witness. And through

  972. his name whosoever believes in him shall

  973. receive remission of sins. Sermon over.

  974. The Holy Spirit interrupted it and all

  975. the other people got saved.

  976. Shut up, Peter.

  977. Sermon's over. Service is over.

  978. Everybody's got saved. Now, let's

  979. baptize these people.

  980. Now, was that rude of God to interrupt

  981. Peter's sermon?

  982. Is that what we all want? Is it we all

  983. Is what we all want is for God to turn

  984. the light on for people. I've used this

  985. illustration so many times, but it

  986. happened very early in my life. I I was

  987. I knocked on a man's door back in the

  988. day when you used to do all that and and

  989. uh he let me in. Very nice fellow. And

  990. he he was stuck. He he thought you had

  991. to be he thought you had to be baptized

  992. to be saved. That was his

  993. belief. And so I I thought I'm going to

  994. talk to him a little bit. So I just gave

  995. him John 3:16. And I turned the Bible

    John 3:16

  996. around. And I said, "Would you read that

  997. verse and tell me how somebody's saved?"

  998. And so he read John 3:16. For God so

    John 3:16

  999. loved the world, he gave his only

1000. begotten son. He read it out loud that

1001. whoever believes in him would not perish

1002. but have everlasting life. And I said,

1003. "How according to that verse, how is

1004. someone saved?" He said, "By being

  1005. waterbaptized."

1006. That's what the man said.

1007. He was a Sunday school teacher for 20 or

  1008. 30 years. I don't remember which one.

1009. Wasn't a young man. So that was kind of

1010. stretched my patience a little bit. I

1011. said, "Would you read that verse again?"

1012. And according to this verse,

1013. how does someone get eternal life?

1014. So he read it out loud and I said,

1015. "According to this verse, how does

1016. someone get everlasting life?" He said

  1017. they're being waterbaptized.

1018. Now I was early 20s at that point and I

1019. wanted to be very respectful to this man

  1020. who was probably 70.

1021. So I didn't know where to go from now

  1022. and I said

1023. but anyway somewhere in the conversation

1024. I talked to him again. I said would you

  1025. read that verse again?

1026. tell me according to that person. How

  1027. does someone get eternal?

1028. And he read it again. That was all my

1029. conversation with the guy. Just had turn

1030. the Bible around, had him read it and

1031. ask him what it said.

1032. And I kid you not at all by this. It was

1033. like the cartoons where the light bulb

1034. goes on before over someone's head.

  1035. His face lit up

1036. and he said, "It's by believing."

  1037. And it's by believing.

1038. God turned the light on. I could have

1039. argued with that guy till the horses

1040. come home, you know, to the barn. It

1041. wouldn't have made any difference. But

1042. he he got God and I was praying for it.

1043. God, turn on the lights. And God did

1044. turn on the lights. He got saved.

1045. And I never forgot that because it's not

1046. my arguments. It's not my words. It's

1047. God's spirit that does the work

  1048. on people's hearts.

1049. And we can talk to them and they're not

1050. interested and maybe they go away

1051. unbelieving. But if anyone does believe,

1052. it's called the Holy Spirit brings them

  1053. to salvation. We're born again, aren't

1054. we? As uh uh by the word of God.

1055. And so that's what happened to that man.

1056. And so as we look at what's going on

1057. here, it says in verse 44, "While Peter

1058. spoke yet spoke these words, the Holy

1059. Spirit fell on all them who heard the

1060. word." Every person in that room got

  1061. saved.

  1062. Now that's unusual.

  1063. That's very unsaved

1064. and some don't. In this case, everybody

1065. got saved in that room. He'd invited all

1066. his friends and family and fellow

  1067. soldiers and stuff. And

  1068. so, uh, it's a fascinating business

  1069. here.

1070. And so, while Peter verse 44 spoke these

1071. words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them

1072. who heard the word. And they of the

1073. circumcision who believed, that's the

1074. people that came with Peter to the

  1075. meeting, were astonished.

1076. astonished as many as came with Peter

1077. because on the Gentiles also was poured

1078. out the gift of the Lord.

  1079. What?

1080. So all those people got their minds

1081. expanded, their theology got uh

1082. challenged of the of how they were

1083. looking at things or they heard them

1084. speak with tongues and magnify God. Then

1085. answered Peter, "Can any man forbid

1086. water that these should not be baptized

1087. who receive the Holy Spirit as well as

1088. we?" And he commanded them to be

1089. baptized in the name of the Lord. Then

1090. asked they him to t certain days. So by

1091. the way, there's four reasons for the

1092. speaking in tongues in the Bible.

1093. A whole other lesson, right?

1094. And one of them is to identify new

  1095. people

1096. that are going to be added to the

  1097. church.

1098. And that's how the Holy Spirit was

1099. identifying in the book of Acts. He did

1100. it with the Samaritans. Oh, they're in

1101. now. He did it with the Gentiles. Now

1102. they're in. You don't need it after that

1103. because all the groups are in. The

1104. world's made up of Jews, half Jews,

1105. Samaritans, and Gentiles. And so here it

1106. was. And God was clearly leading in that

  1107. business.

1108. Fascinating thing. Now we go on. We go

1109. on in the book of Acts, Acts 25, Acts

  1110. 26, Acts 28. Explicitly and implicitly

1111. they're talking about the resurrection

  1112. of Jesus Christ.

  1113. And

1114. the church is the butterfly that came

1115. out of the Jewish cocoon.

1116. Right? The church is the butterfly that

1117. came out of the Jewish cocoon.

  1118. No cocoon, no butterfly.

1119. God had a purpose for the Jew, the

1120. Jewish people, right? And that his

1121. purpose for them goes beyond the church.

1122. That's a whole other subject. But the

1123. church owes uh the program of God

1124. through the Jewish people. The church

1125. owes a big debt to that.

1126. We should never forget that. And the

1127. gospel was to the Jew first and then to

1128. the what? The Gentiles. God had a

1129. program. God had a and he he had a

  1130. long-term program.

1131. And we now 2,000 years later of church

  1132. history, it's still gone on. God's

1133. saving people all over the place

1134. that know nothing, know little,

1135. and it's all because Jesus arose from

1136. the dead. Now, there's other purposes

  1137. for Israel. That's a whole other

1138. subject. I believe their physical return

1139. to the land is a political resurrection

1140. that is also a confirmation of the

  1141. Bible.

1142. And that's a whole other subject. Go

1143. with me to 1 Corinthians chapter 15.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  1144. And I'll close.

1145. If you want to understand the

  1146. resurrection of Jesus,

1147. if you want to understand what the early

  1148. church believed,

1149. if you want to understand what

1150. resurrection is and is not, you need to

1151. study this chapter 58 verses. You want

1152. to understand how it applies, that we'll

1153. be risen from the dead, place you ought

1154. to live in light of it, how absolutely

1155. uh assured we are of these truths. And I

1156. would remind you that 1 Corinthians was

  1157. written 13 years before Luke's gospel.

1158. In our Bible, Matthew, Mark, and Luke,

1159. and John record things that happened

1160. before the missionary journeys to the

1161. Gentiles, but they were written after

  1162. that time.

1163. So, they're chronologically before, but

1164. the written record is after. First

1165. Corinthians is earlier than Matthew,

1166. Mark, Luke, and John as far as the

1167. writing of the document is concerned.

1168. They didn't have to write it for many

1169. years because there's so many people

1170. alive that knew all the stuff.

1171. They started dying off. They started

  1172. writing the four gospels.

1173. But in 1 Corinthians, Paul says,

1174. "Moreover, brethren, I declare to you

1175. the gospel which I preached to you,

1176. which you've received and in which you

1177. stand, by which you're saved, if you

1178. keep in memory what I preached to you,

1179. unless you believed in vain. For I

1180. delivered to you first of all that which

1181. I received, that Christ died for our

1182. sins according to the scriptures. Then

1183. he was buried and rose again the third

1184. day according to the scriptures. He was

1185. seen of Cphus, that's Peter, then the

1186. twel, and after that he was seen of

1187. above 500 brethren at once, of whom the

1188. greater part remained to this present

1189. time, but some are fallen asleep. After

1190. that, he was seen of James. That's

  1191. Jesus's half-brother. Then of all the

1192. apostles, and last of all, he was seen

1193. of me as one born out of due time. I'm

1194. the least of the apostles. I'm not fit

1195. to be called an apostle because I

1196. persecuted the church of God. But by the

1197. grace of God, I am what I am. And his

1198. grace which was bestowed upon me was not

1199. in vain. But I labored more abundantly

1200. than they all. Yet not I, but the grace

1201. of God which is in me. Therefore,

1202. whether it were I or they, so we preach,

1203. and so you believe. I just want to say

1204. this just without getting into it.

1205. The Corinthian church got mixed up. They

1206. were mixing Greek philosophy and the

  1207. gospel

1208. and they believed that Jesus was risen

1209. from the dead. But they believed they

  1210. weren't going to be

1211. Greeks didn't Greek Greek culture and

  1212. Greek philosophy thought the

  1213. resurrection wasn't possible or

  1214. desirable.

1215. That's what Greek philosophy did.

1216. why Paul was mocked when he went into

  1217. Athens, Greece.

1218. So the Corinthian church, they did not

1219. deny the physical resurrection of Jesus

1220. from the dead. If you deny that, you're

1221. not a Christian. They were Christians.

  1222. But they didn't understand how Jesus's

  1223. resurrection demanded their own

1224. resurrection. Do you understand that?

1225. This is important. And what Paul is

1226. saying, the one can't happen without the

  1227. other happening.

1228. You can't stay in the grave any more

1229. than Jesus did. If you're a believer,

1230. you're going to be resurrected

1231. because you are united to him, his

  1232. person and work.

  1233. That's a comfort. Don't let anybody rob

  1234. you of that.

1235. And so Paul goes on and he says in verse

1236. 12, "Now if Christ be preached that he

1237. rose from the dead, how say some among

1238. you there's no resurrection from the

1239. dead?" You How do you even think that's

  1240. possible?

  1241. It's inconsistent. It's incoherent.

1242. But if there be no resurrection of the

1243. dead, then Christ is not risen. And if

1244. Christ be not risen, then our preaching

1245. is vain, and your faith is also vain.

1246. Yay. And we're found false witnesses of

1247. God, because we testified of God, that

1248. he raised up Christ, whom he raised not

1249. up. If so be that the dead rise not.

1250. Therefore, if the dead rise not, then is

1251. not Christ raised. And if Christ be not

1252. raised, your faith is vain. You're yet

1253. in your sins, then they also who are

1254. fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

1255. For if in this life only we have hope in

1256. Christ, we are of all men most

1257. miserable. So he's saying, "Your

1258. theology is so inconsistent, you better

1259. get better get a a better grasp of what

  1260. happened."

  1261. Jesus is not a private person. He's a

1262. public person. Adam was not a private

1263. person. He was a public person. What

1264. Adam did affected the whole human race.

1265. What Jesus did affects everybody that

1266. believes in him. There's two Adams.

1267. There's the first Adam and there's the

  1268. last Adam, right? 1 Corinthians 15,

1269. Romans chapter 5. There's no third Adam.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  1270. That Korean

1271. cultist says he's the third Adam.

1272. Yeah. No. No way. You're the third Adam.

1273. There is no third Adam.

1274. There's the first Adam, the federal head

1275. of the human race, and in Adam all die.

1276. And Jesus is the last Adam, not the

  1277. second.

1278. He's the last. In Christ, all that's all

1279. that are in Christ will be made.

  1280. It's impossible for a Christian's body

1281. to stay at the grave.

1282. As we're reunited with Jesus,

  1283. we will be risen

  1284. to be with him

1285. based on our good works. based on his

1286. work. And Paul's just rearranging their

1287. theology so they could think straight.

1288. Saved people sometimes get mixed up.

1289. Saved people sometimes let something

1290. else influence them besides God's word.

1291. And this there's a whole church is mixed

  1292. up

1293. because they were listening to their

  1294. culture and their philosophical

1295. background more than they knew the

1296. Bible. And you know what? That's a

1297. problem in America. We live in an

  1298. atheistic materialistic

  1299. uh culture.

  1300. Philosophically reduces everything to

  1301. matter.

  1302. They don't understand there's other

  1303. things in life besides

  1304. physical existence.

1305. And so we need we have the same problem

1306. the early Greeks had in our culture. And

1307. we can get mixed up. I was kind of mixed

  1308. up in college.

1309. Stuff I did in college. I got very mixed

1310. up. Too many philosophy courses.

1311. I had 30 some philosophy courses besides

  1312. my major.

1313. So Christians can get confused

1314. and they were confused not on a little

1315. thing but a very big thing.

1316. We need to immerse oursel in scripture.

1317. We need to be soaked in the Bible.

1318. We need to become Bible readers and

  1319. Bible students.

1320. And some of hardly read their Bible.

1321. Well, then if you don't, then your mind

1322. is filled with what the culture says. We

1323. have to fill it with what God has said.

1324. And so this is very, very important. And

1325. we have an effect in history. It's

1326. called the coming of Jesus Christ.

1327. Every effect has to have a cause.

1328. Every effect must have a cause. The

1329. church is the effect. The cause is Jesus

1330. Christ. There'd be no church if Jesus

  1331. was dead.

1332. If Jesus was dead in the tomb, whether

1333. somebody stole the body or burned the

1334. body or anything else, if he didn't rise

1335. from the dead, there'd be no church. I

1336. know the church is corrupt in many

1337. places. We understand that. Bible

1338. predicts that. We're not defending

1339. everything out there that says it's a

1340. church or Christianity, but that I'm

1341. saying there's a church in the world

  1342. today

1343. because Jesus arose from the dead.

1344. You know, there were other people back

1345. in the first century, second century,

1346. third century that said they were Christ

1347. and they died. Some even said they'd

1348. rise from the dead. How many have heard

  1349. of them?

1350. How many followers they got now?

  1351. Nothing.

1352. Do you know there were 40 false messiahs

  1353. in early history? That's a lot.

1354. How many of them could you name?

1355. You say, "I haven't heard of any of

1356. them." You know why you haven't heard of

  1357. any of them?

  1358. They were false.

1359. They were discovered to be false. They

1360. predicted things that didn't happen.

1361. One, a couple of them even said, "On the

1362. third day, they were imitating Jesus. On

1363. the third day, I'll rise from the dead."

1364. Well, it didn't happen. They were still

  1365. dead.

1366. So, it's a wonderful thing to know that

  1367. the church

1368. is based on the empty tomb and built on

  1369. the risen Christ.

1370. And the church is here because Jesus was

  1371. here.

  1372. History can't forget him.

  1373. History cannot ignore him.

1374. How many people lived 2,000 years ago

1375. are still affecting the world today? Not

  1376. too many.

1377. And Jesus more than any other.

1378. So we have all this truth that's so just

1379. amazing. Every effect has to have a

1380. cause and but you have to know the real

1381. cause, right? Not just guess it. And so

1382. hopefully this has been a little bit

1383. helpful to you as we think about the

1384. resurrection of our Lord and the church

1385. of Jesus Christ and how things just

  1386. exploded.

1387. It didn't stay in Israel.

1388. It didn't stay in the Jewish cocoon. It

1389. expanded like if you throw a pebble in a

1390. pond and just the ripples kept coming

  1391. out and out.

1392. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, the utter

1393. parts of the earth. We're in the utter

  1394. parts.

1395. We're in the utter parts. Think about

  1396. where we live.

1397. Think about how far away from first

1398. century we live and the gospels come to

  1399. us. Forgive

1400. me for using old illustrations, but

1401. we've been at church as long as I have.

1402. You kind of just use some of the same.

1403. My dad was in the Pacific in World War

1404. II. He was a medic in World War II in

1405. the Pacific Island, different islands.

1406. And in one of the islands,

1407. uh, he was on some islands where

1408. fighting was happening. He was also on

1409. some other islands where they're just

1410. staging things. And one of the islands

  1411. was uh Tonga.

1412. It was a staging area. You go there

1413. first and then you go other places. And

1414. he had different experiences there. But

1415. uh uh and then I I looked on the map and

1416. I saw where Tonga was and I saw where

1417. the other islands dad was on and I said,

1418. "Dad, guess what? Jerusalem's over here

1419. on a globe and Tonga and Waka and

1420. Boganville and uh New Calonia. New New

1421. Calonia. you are all over here. I said,

1422. "Dad, you were in the uttermost parts of

1423. the earth. You were completely you were

1424. as far away from Jerusalem as you could

  1425. get."

1426. And my dad was a Christian went to a

  1427. little Methodist chapel

1428. on one of those islands

1429. and there were Christians there.

  1430. Christians

  1431. that far from Jerusalem.

1432. And dad told me the testimony of a guy

1433. that used to be a cannibal. And he said,

1434. 'I used to eat people, but now I'm

  1435. saved. I don't do that anymore.

1436. So there were people who were saved that

  1437. far away from Jerusalem.

  1438. That is worldwide. That's a worldwide

  1439. ripple.

  1440. That's a worldwide effect.

1441. And so if you don't know the Lord as

1442. your savior, you can be like the Jews.

1443. You can be raised in a bibleelving place

1444. and still not know the Lord. Be ignorant

1445. of the Lord. Being the scriptures,

1446. but God can save your soul.

1447. The gospel is the power of God to

  1448. salvation

1449. to everyone that believes to the Jew

1450. first and then to to the what? The

1451. Greek. You can come to the Lord today.

1452. And I hope this whole resurrection

1453. stuff, there's much more to be said on

1454. the resurrection thing. I'm going to

1455. take a break from it because we've been

1456. several weeks on it. Probably go back to

1457. great text series for a little bit. Then

1458. we'll move on back to the resurrection.

1459. But these are important things. These

  1460. are bas

1461. Christianity. This is basic stuff.

1462. Father, we thank you for your goodness

1463. and mercy. Accomplish your purposes in

1464. our lives as we wait upon you. We thank

1465. you for the resurrection of Jesus

1466. Christ. And Psalm 22 mentioned the

1467. people from other countries around the

1468. world that would be saved because of the

  1469. resurrection of the Messiah.

1470. And here we are so far away.

1471. And we know about it just like Psalm 22

  1472. predicted.

1473. The same psalm that predicted the holes

  1474. in his hands, forsakenness

1475. at the cross, his death,

1476. and his resurrection. Predicted that the

1477. whole world's going to hear it. And here

1478. we are 2,000 years later.

  1479. What confirmation.

1480. So bless us and work in our we pray in

  1481. Jesus name.

  1482. >> Then turn to page 644.

  1483. We'll write in 6:45

  1484. loving you more,

  1485. trusting you more.

1486. May the power of your love and the light

1487. of your word shine to a sin darkened

1488. world. As we go from this place,
