  1. If you have your Bibles, please turn to Exodus 34 with me.

  2. We've been in this book for maybe a year and a half, a little over or so,

  3. and we are nearing the end of the book.

  4. It's the second book of the Bible.

  5. If you don't have a Bible, please raise your hand.

  6. We'd love to give you a copy that you can have,

  7. and you can use that while you're here.

  8. Exodus 34.

  9. Verses 10 to 28.

  10. Let me pray now for the reading and preaching of God's word.

  11. Heavenly Father, we humble ourselves before your word.

  12. We have gathered in your name to worship you, to honor you,

  13. and also to be addressed by you,

  14. to be ministered to by you,

  15. to be transformed by you.

  16. So as we incline our ears and our hearts to this word,

  17. open up the eyes of our hearts that we might understand

  18. and believe and obey to your glory.

  19. In Jesus' name we pray.

  20. Amen.

  21. If you are willing and able,

  22. please stand for the reading of God's word from Exodus 34,

    Exodus 34:10–28

  23. verses 10 to 28.

  24. And he said,

  25. Behold,

  26. behold,

  27. behold,

  28. I am making a covenant.

  29. Before all your people,

  30. I will do marvels,

  31. such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation.

  32. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord.

  33. For it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.

  34. Observe what I command you this day.

  35. Behold,

  36. I will drive out before you the Amorites,

  37. the Canaanites,

  38. the Hittites,

  39. the Perizzites,

  40. the Hivites,

  41. and the Jebusites.

  42. Take care lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you go,

  43. lest it become a snare in your midst.

  44. You shall tear down their altars and break their pillars and cut down their ashram.

  45. For you shall worship no other God,

  46. for the Lord whose name is Jealous is a jealous God.

  47. Lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land.

  48. And when they whore after their gods and sacrifice to their gods,

  49. and you are invited,

  50. you eat of his sacrifice.

  51. And you take of their daughters for your sons,

  52. and their daughters whore after their gods,

  53. and make your sons whore after their gods.

  54. You shall not make for yourself any gods of cast metal.

  55. You shall keep the feast of unleavened bread.

  56. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread,

  57. as I commanded you,

  58. at the time appointed in the month Abib.

  59. For in the month Abib,

  60. you came out from Egypt.

  61. All that open the womb are mine.

  62. All your male livestock,

  63. the firstborn of cow and sheep,

  64. the firstborn of a donkey,

  65. you shall redeem with a lamb.

  66. Or if you will not redeem it,

  67. you shall break its neck.

  68. All the firstborn of your sons,

  69. you shall redeem.

  70. And none shall appear before me empty-handed.

  71. Six days you shall work,

  72. but on the seventh day you shall rest.

  73. In plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.

  74. You shall observe the feast of weeks,

  75. the first fruits of wheat harvest,

  76. and the feast of ingathering at the year's end.

  77. Three times in the year

  78. shall all your males appear before the Lord God,

  79. the God of Israel.

  80. For I will cast out nations before you

  81. and enlarge your borders.

  82. No one shall covet your land

  83. when you go up to appear before the Lord your God

  84. three times in the year.

  85. You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice

  86. with anything leavened,

  87. or let the sacrifice of the feast of the Passover

  88. remain until the morning.

  89. The best of the first fruits of your ground

  90. you shall bring to the house of the Lord your God.

  91. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk.

  92. And the Lord said to Moses,

  93. Write these words,

  94. for in accordance with these words

  95. I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.

  96. So he was there with the Lord 40 days and 40 nights.

  97. He neither ate bread nor drank water.

  98. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant,

  99. the Ten Commandments.

  100. This is God's holy and authoritative word.

  101. You may be seated this time.

  102. Especially for those of you

  103. who are kind of visiting mid-series,

  104. you might be confused by all the details here.

  105. I'm going to use the metaphor,

  106. the analogy of marriage,

  107. because marriage is a covenant

  108. to refer to the relationship

  109. between God and his people Israel

  110. as God himself does in scripture.

  111. And so that will hopefully get you

  112. to understand what's going on here.

  113. It's hard to be faithful

  114. to the covenant of marriage.

  115. According to an article in the Journal

  116. of Couple and Relationship Therapy,

  117. an estimated 50 to 60% of married men

  118. and 45 to 55% of married women

  119. commit adultery.

  120. Nearly 50% of married couples get divorced.

  121. And over 70% of second marriages

  122. end in divorce.

  123. That means marital infidelity

  124. affects nearly half of all couples.

  125. Some of you have been affected by it.

  126. But imagine for a moment

  127. that you're the party

  128. that cheated on your spouse.

  129. You betrayed her trust.

  130. You gravely wronged her.

  131. You were caught in the act.

  132. You regret that you cheated on a loving spouse

  133. for some fleeting moments of pleasure.

  134. And you're deeply ashamed and sorry

  135. and you sincerely apologize to your wife,

  136. but you're still fully expecting to be divorced.

  137. Your life is never going to be the same again.

  138. But imagine that your spouse,

  139. instead of leaving you,

  140. even while she is grieving your infidelity,

  141. she forgives you

  142. and gives you a second chance.

  143. How would you feel?

  144. You have been shown mercy.

  145. You have received grace.

  146. Undeserved favor.

  147. You'd feel relief.

  148. You'd feel gratitude.

  149. And assuming you were sincere in your repentance,

  150. you'd want to make sure that it never happens again.

  151. Your wife would probably insist

  152. that you cut off all contact with your paramour,

  153. and that's a no-brainer.

  154. You would agree to that.

  155. And there would likely be other guardrails

  156. and guidelines for you to commit to

  157. to ensure that the adultery never happens again.

  158. That's the situation that the Israelites

  159. find themselves in in this passage.

  160. As I've said the last two weeks,

  161. the Israelites were like a bride

  162. who cheats on her husband

  163. on the night of their wedding,

  164. adulterating the marriage bed

  165. while her husband is making preparations

  166. for their new life together.

  167. While the covenant agreement

  168. between God and his people Israel,

  169. the Ten Commandments and the Book of the Covenant

  170. were fresh off the press,

  171. the Israelites abandoned Yahweh, their God,

  172. and turned to idols by building a golden bull

  173. and prostrating themselves before it.

  174. But God nevertheless showed them mercy

  175. and why?

  176. Because we saw last week in Exodus 34, 1-9

  177. that the Lord is a merciful and gracious God,

  178. slow to anger and abounding

  179. in steadfast love and faithfulness.

  180. Look at verse 10 with me.

  181. Look at what God says that he will do again for them.

  182. Behold, I am making a covenant.

  183. Before all your people I will do marvels

  184. such as have not been created in all the earth

  185. or in any nation.

  186. And all the people among whom you are

  187. shall see the work of the Lord,

  188. for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.

  189. Just look at how gracious God is to assure them of this

  190. and see how fully God forgives them

  191. and blesses them and does not count their sins against them.

  192. Even though Israel has broken their covenant with him,

  193. he says, again, behold, I am making a covenant.

  194. I think if I were in God's shoes,

  195. I would tell them something like,

  196. hey, well, fine, I'll put up with you just one more time.

  197. But you're going to live in the doghouse from now on.

  198. And if there's even the slightest hint of impropriety,

  199. then don't let the door hit you on the way out.

  200. I think that would be what I would want to say to the Israelites

  201. if I were in God's shoes.

  202. But that's not how God responds.

  203. He says, in effect, you have been unfaithful to me,

  204. but I will enter into a covenant relationship with you still.

  205. And I will dwell with you still.

  206. And I will do for you and among you marvelous

  207. and awesome things that have never been done

  208. in all the earth or in any nation.

  209. That's not the doghouse.

  210. That's paradise.

  211. That's the promised land.

  212. That's nothing less than the new creation.

  213. Notice the creation language in verse 10.

  214. I will do marvels such as have not been created

  215. in all the earth or in any nation.

  216. That word create in Hebrew is never predicated

  217. of anyone except for God.

  218. God's the only one throughout the scriptures

  219. who creates in this sense.

  220. Bringing something out of nothing.

  221. Bringing something new.

  222. That's what God's promising to do

  223. for his people.

  224. And we're gonna see what that is

  225. in more detail later on.

  226. But before we get there,

  227. God gives the Israelites some guardrails

  228. and guidelines to follow.

  229. God tells them that as recipients of mercy

  230. and forgiveness,

  231. they should maintain their distinct identity

  232. as the people of God.

  233. They need to be faithful to him,

  234. loyal to him,

  235. be identifiable as God's special people.

  236. So to this end,

  237. God gives them two things

  238. to help them along their journey.

  239. Two things that will help them

  240. to obey God's commandments

  241. and keep their covenant with him.

  242. And that's one,

  243. a fence.

  244. And two,

  245. a calendar.

  246. I'll explain what I mean by that.

  247. The first thing that God gives them

  248. is a fence.

  249. We see that in verses 11 and 12.

  250. Behold,

  251. I will drive out before you

  252. the Amorites,

  253. the Canaanites,

  254. the Hittites,

  255. the Perizzites,

  256. the Hivites,

  257. and the Jebusites.

  258. Take care,

  259. lest you make a covenant

  260. with the inhabitants of the land

  261. to which you go,

  262. lest it become a snare

  263. in your midst.

  264. Notice the contrast

  265. between verse 10 and verse 12.

  266. In verse 10,

  267. God says,

  268. I am making a covenant with you.

  269. And in verse 12,

  270. he tells them

  271. not to make a covenant

  272. with the inhabitants of the land,

  273. lest it become a snare for them.

  274. In Korean,

  275. the word for we,

  276. I think I mentioned this

  277. some years ago,

  278. four or five,

  279. maybe even six years ago

  280. in a sermon.

  281. None of you remember.

  282. In Korean,

  283. the word for we

  284. is the same word

  285. for a fence

  286. or an animal pen

  287. that keeps your animals in

  288. and intruders and predators out.

  289. Because defining and maintaining

  290. who we are

  291. requires putting a fence around it,

  292. drawing boundary lines

  293. to define what is not part of us,

  294. to distinguish ourselves

  295. from who they are,

  296. what those things are.

  297. We is defined

  298. in contradistinction to they

  299. because if everybody is family,

  300. then nobody is family.

  301. For this reason,

  302. God will drive out

  303. the Amorites,

  304. the Canaanites,

  305. the Hittites,

  306. the Perizzites,

  307. the Hivites,

  308. and the Jebusites

  309. from the land of Canaan.

  310. And the Israelites

  311. are not to make a covenant with them

  312. and keep them in the land

  313. because if they do,

  314. they will be ensnared by them

  315. and lose their distinct identity

  316. as the people of God.

  317. Marriage is once again

  318. a good illustration

  319. of this principle

  320. because it's meant to be

  321. an exclusive partnership,

  322. exclusive relationship

  323. between one man and one woman.

  324. Whenever you add other people

  325. into that equation,

  326. whether that's through adultery

  327. or polygamy,

  328. you have violated the terms

  329. of the covenant

  330. and it leads to bad consequences,

  331. you can see throughout scripture.

  332. Nowadays,

  333. many people are talking

  334. about open relationships

  335. involving multiple partners.

  336. Somerville became the first city

  337. just north of us,

  338. first city in the country

  339. to legally recognize

  340. polyamorous relationships

  341. in 2020.

  342. But people who advocate

  343. for such relationships

  344. don't understand

  345. a basic reality.

  346. The intimacy

  347. that you experience

  348. in marriage

  349. is directly proportional

  350. to the sacred exclusivity

  351. of your relationship.

  352. when the relationship

  353. is no longer exclusive,

  354. your attention

  355. is diverted,

  356. your affection,

  357. your love

  358. is divided,

  359. and by necessity,

  360. your intimacy

  361. is diluted.

  362. It's no longer marriage

  363. as God designed it,

  364. but an inferior counterfeit.

  365. And it works the same way

  366. in our relationship

  367. with God.

  368. Israel cannot be in

  369. a covenant relationship

  370. with God

  371. and yet at the same time

  372. be in a covenant relationship

  373. with another nation

  374. and their gods.

  375. To be faithful to another

  376. is to be unfaithful

  377. to the Lord

  378. because worship

  379. is an either-or proposition.

  380. Making a covenant

  381. with these nations

  382. and intermarrying with them

  383. will lead them

  384. to whore after their gods

  385. and sacrifice to their gods,

  386. as it says in verse 15.

  387. That sexual language

  388. continues that theme

  389. of covenant

  390. and even of marriage.

  391. Sexual intimacy

  392. is meant to be shared

  393. in the context

  394. of an exclusive

  395. marriage covenant,

  396. but when you share it

  397. with someone

  398. to whom you are

  399. not lawfully wedded,

  400. you are acting

  401. like a prostitute

  402. who gives his

  403. or her body away

  404. to anyone

  405. who is willing

  406. to pay enough money

  407. or maybe even

  408. for no money at all.

  409. We might not worship

  410. a golden bull statue

  411. like the Israelites did,

  412. but we nonetheless

  413. have our own idols.

  414. An idol is anything

  415. we count on,

  416. anything we trust in

  417. more than we do in God.

  418. An idol is anything

  419. we desire,

  420. anything we are devoted to

  421. more than God.

  422. That thing or person

  423. that we look to

  424. to satisfy us,

  425. to give us meaning

  426. and purpose in life,

  427. if it's not the true God,

  428. then that is an idol.

  429. Money,

  430. success,

  431. and fame

  432. can be an idol.

  433. Even good things

  434. like sex,

  435. family,

  436. and health

  437. can be an idol

  438. if they become

  439. more important to us

  440. than God himself.

  441. When we fall

  442. into idolatry,

  443. it says that God

  444. is jealous for us.

  445. It says in verse 14,

  446. for you shall worship

  447. no other God

  448. for the Lord

  449. whose name is jealous

  450. is a jealous God.

  451. This is the one place

  452. in all of scripture

  453. where it is said

  454. that God's name

  455. is jealous.

  456. It's part of,

  457. core of who he is,

  458. his identity.

  459. Why?

  460. Because God is love

  461. and jealousy

  462. is an expression

  463. of love.

  464. Numbers 5.14

  465. uses the word jealousy

  466. to describe

  467. what comes over a husband

  468. when he suspects

  469. that his wife

  470. has defiled herself

  471. sexually with another.

  472. We tend to think

  473. that jealousy

  474. is bad.

  475. It's a bad problematic emotion.

  476. We tend to think that way

  477. because in common English,

  478. we often conflate

  479. and use interchangeably

  480. the word jealousy

  481. and envy.

  482. But if we get technical,

  483. they're not actually

  484. the same thing.

  485. On the one hand,

  486. envy is a longing

  487. that a person feels

  488. for something

  489. that belongs

  490. to someone else.

  491. For example,

  492. when we are envious

  493. of someone else's wealth,

  494. someone else's looks,

  495. someone else's relationships,

  496. envy is sinful

  497. because it's a failure

  498. to love your neighbor

  499. as yourself.

  500. But jealousy

  501. is the longing

  502. and zeal

  503. that a person feels

  504. when something

  505. or someone

  506. that rightfully belongs

  507. to him or her

  508. is threatened.

  509. It's a sign of love

  510. as opposed to a sign

  511. of indifference.

  512. It is right

  513. for the husband

  514. or the wife

  515. to feel jealous

  516. when his or her spouse

  517. is flirting

  518. with someone else

  519. because she belongs

  520. to him

  521. and not to another man.

  522. Likewise,

  523. it is right for God

  524. to be jealous

  525. for us

  526. when we worship

  527. another God,

  528. when we devote ourselves

  529. to another idol

  530. because God created us

  531. for himself.

  532. He has redeemed us

  533. for himself

  534. and he paid a steep

  535. price for it.

  536. We belong to him

  537. and to no one else

  538. and our worship

  539. should therefore

  540. be exclusively for God.

  541. That's why

  542. this God

  543. is jealous

  544. for us

  545. and that's why

  546. he gives the Israelites

  547. offense.

  548. He says in verse 13,

  549. you shall tear down

  550. their altars

  551. and break their pillars

  552. and cut down

  553. their ashram.

  554. The altars,

  555. pillars,

  556. and ashram

  557. are all things

  558. used in the worship

  559. of pagan worship

  560. and idols

  561. by the Canaanites.

  562. Ashram is a plural form

  563. of asherah

  564. and it says

  565. in Deuteronomy 16, 21,

  566. you shall not plant

  567. any tree

  568. as an asherah

  569. beside the altar

  570. of the Lord your God

  571. that you shall make.

  572. So asherim,

  573. which is the plural,

  574. are probably sacred trees

  575. of some kind

  576. planted by the Canaanites

  577. for the purposes

  578. of religious worship.

  579. That's why God commands them

  580. to cut it down,

  581. smash the idols,

  582. cut down the asherim.

  583. To 21st century

  584. modern pluralists,

  585. this kind of command

  586. might appear

  587. downright barbaric,

  588. but the reality is

  589. if the Lord our God

  590. is God

  591. and no one else

  592. is God,

  593. then false religions

  594. are idolatrous,

  595. deceptive,

  596. and dangerous

  597. because they pose

  598. eternal peril

  599. to their adherents.

  600. Undoubtedly,

  601. some people object

  602. that this is

  603. a supremely arrogant position

  604. for Christians to hold.

  605. When there are millions

  606. of faithful adherents

  607. of other religions

  608. in the world,

  609. who are we to say

  610. that Jesus

  611. is the one way,

  612. the truth,

  613. and the life?

  614. Isn't that offensive?

  615. A pluralist argues

  616. that God is like

  617. an elephant

  618. and that people

  619. of various religions,

  620. they touch different parts

  621. of the elephant.

  622. We're all like blind men

  623. groping about

  624. and feeling different parts

  625. of the elephant.

  626. They say that one blind man

  627. touches the trunk,

  628. the long trunk,

  629. and says,

  630. oh no,

  631. the elephant is like a snake.

  632. Another blind person

  633. touches the tusk,

  634. and then says,

  635. oh no,

  636. not like a snake at all.

  637. The elephant is more like

  638. a horn or the head

  639. of a spear.

  640. And another blind man

  641. touches the leg

  642. and then says,

  643. no,

  644. the elephant is actually

  645. like a mighty big

  646. tree trunk.

  647. And the pluralist argues

  648. that actually

  649. everybody is right

  650. because they're all

  651. pointing out

  652. an aspect of the elephant

  653. and says,

  654. well,

  655. all people

  656. who follow

  657. various religions

  658. in the world

  659. are like those blind men.

  660. They only see

  661. a part of the picture,

  662. so in that sense

  663. they are all right

  664. and they are all legitimate

  665. and they should all

  666. be accepted.

  667. That's the argument

  668. of the pluralist.

  669. The problem,

  670. the fallacy

  671. of that analogy

  672. is that in order

  673. for that analogy

  674. to work,

  675. someone has to see

  676. the whole elephant.

  677. If the analogy

  678. really were true,

  679. then we should

  680. all be blind,

  681. including the pluralist

  682. and no one

  683. in the world

  684. should know

  685. that we're looking

  686. at different parts

  687. of the same elephant.

  688. But that's not

  689. what the pluralist claims.

  690. The pluralist claims

  691. to be the one person

  692. who recognizes

  693. and sees

  694. the whole elephant.

  695. He says,

  696. no one should be

  697. exclusive in his

  698. religious beliefs

  699. and recognize

  700. that all the religions

  701. of the world

  702. are true and legitimate

  703. because they all

  704. see a part of the truth.

  705. In other words,

  706. the pluralist

  707. is not affirming

  708. the validity

  709. of every religion.

  710. Rather,

  711. he is arrogantly assuming

  712. that his perspective

  713. alone sees

  714. the whole picture

  715. and therefore

  716. is elevating

  717. his pluralistic position

  718. to the status

  719. of exclusive truth.

  720. That's the subversive

  721. appeal of pluralism.

  722. He feigns humility

  723. and openness

  724. but is as arrogant

  725. as any religious

  726. exclusivist.

  727. there is either

  728. one God

  729. or there are

  730. many gods.

  731. Jesus is either

  732. the son of God

  733. or he is not.

  734. Jesus either

  735. died for our sins

  736. and was raised

  737. from the dead

  738. or he was not.

  739. We are either

  740. saved by the gift

  741. of God,

  742. by God's grace

  743. or we are saved

  744. by our good works,

  745. by doing good deeds.

  746. Both of these things

  747. cannot be true.

  748. These religious claims

  749. about which Christianity

  750. is at odds

  751. with every other religion

  752. in the world

  753. are either true

  754. or false.

  755. They cannot both be true.

  756. As C.S. Lewis

  757. writes in his book

  758. Mere Christianity,

  759. of course,

  760. being a Christian

  761. does mean thinking

  762. that where Christianity

  763. differs from other religions,

  764. Christianity is right

  765. and they are wrong.

  766. As in arithmetic,

  767. there is only one

  768. right answer to a sum

  769. and all the other

  770. answers are wrong.

  771. Some people might

  772. still object,

  773. well,

  774. say that they are wrong

  775. but still,

  776. why can't you be

  777. more tolerant

  778. and why can't you

  779. just let them be?

  780. These are cultural

  781. and historical artifacts.

  782. Why can't we just share?

  783. Why do you have

  784. to tear them down?

  785. Isn't it enough

  786. that you don't

  787. worship their idols?

  788. Why do you have

  789. to destroy the idols

  790. from your midst?

  791. Verse 12 tells us

  792. why that kind of

  793. drastic measure

  794. is necessary,

  795. lest it become

  796. a snare in your midst.

  797. If they let these things

  798. remain in their homeland,

  799. the Israelites

  800. will be ensnared

  801. and seduced

  802. by them into committing

  803. spiritual adultery again.

  804. And that would bring

  805. guilt and condemnation

  806. upon God's people

  807. and ultimately

  808. eternal damnation

  809. to God's people.

  810. And if God's people

  811. whom,

  812. from whom

  813. God has appointed

  814. the messianic king

  815. Jesus would come

  816. goes astray,

  817. loses the faith,

  818. loses their way,

  819. then all

  820. all of mankind

  821. is lost.

  822. It's like

  823. living in the city,

  824. a lot of you guys

  825. have mousetraps

  826. in your house.

  827. Where do you put

  828. the mousetrap?

  829. I mean,

  830. where do the mice go?

  831. But you put it

  832. in a place

  833. that's inaccessible

  834. to humans,

  835. in the crevices

  836. and the corners,

  837. behind the fridge

  838. or other places

  839. where people don't go

  840. but where the mice

  841. can go

  842. because you would

  843. never put a mousetrap

  844. in the middle

  845. of a living room

  846. lest you step

  847. on it

  848. while you're

  849. walking around.

  850. Why would you

  851. want a snare

  852. in the middle

  853. of your camp?

  854. Why would you

  855. want an idol

  856. which is seductive

  857. and ensnaring

  858. in your life,

  859. in your home?

  860. The same concern

  861. for idolatry

  862. applies to us

  863. as Christians.

  864. Romans 12 says,

  865. I appeal to you

  866. therefore brothers

  867. by the mercies

  868. of God

  869. to present your bodies

  870. as a living sacrifice,

  871. holy and acceptable

  872. to God,

  873. which is your

  874. spiritual worship.

  875. Do not be conformed

  876. to this world

  877. but be transformed

  878. by the renewal

  879. of your mind

  880. that by testing

  881. you may discern

  882. what is the will

  883. of God,

  884. what is good

  885. and acceptable

  886. and perfect.

  887. Notice the language

  888. of living sacrifice

  889. and spiritual worship.

  890. This is how we

  891. worship God today.

  892. We don't offer

  893. animal sacrifices

  894. but we offer

  895. a sacrifice,

  896. a living sacrifice

  897. of our lives,

  898. our worship

  899. and obedience

  900. and in order

  901. to be faithful

  902. to God

  903. and maintain

  904. exclusive allegiance

  905. to Him,

  906. we need a fence

  907. or a filter

  908. of some kind

  909. so that we are not

  910. conformed to this world

  911. but instead

  912. transformed

  913. in accordance

  914. with the will of God.

  915. For example,

  916. our society

  917. idolizes success.

  918. If we as a church

  919. start idolizing

  920. ministry success

  921. and we start

  922. sacrificing

  923. our principles

  924. to do what is popular,

  925. to please the crowd,

  926. then we need to smash

  927. that idol of success

  928. to pieces.

  929. If you start

  930. to idolize

  931. a romantic relationship

  932. so that you're

  933. starting to compromise

  934. your convictions

  935. and you're sliding

  936. across physical

  937. and emotional

  938. boundaries

  939. that you thought

  940. you'd never cross

  941. before or outside

  942. of marriage,

  943. then you need to

  944. cut off that relationship

  945. from your life.

  946. If you start

  947. to idolize money

  948. and you sense

  949. that your hopes

  950. and dreams

  951. are rising and falling

  952. with the stock market,

  953. then you sell

  954. it all off.

  955. Give it away

  956. to the poor.

  957. Tear down

  958. those idols.

  959. Israelites needed

  960. to get rid

  961. of the altars

  962. and the pillars

  963. and the ashram

  964. lest they be ensnared.

  965. Likewise,

  966. we need to get rid

  967. of the idols

  968. and flee temptation

  969. in our lives.

  970. It's naive to think

  971. that we can

  972. surround ourselves

  973. with these idols,

  974. the altars

  975. and the pillars

  976. and the ashram

  977. of this world

  978. and still live

  979. faithful Christian lives.

  980. People who think

  981. that way

  982. are like the people

  983. who always boast

  984. that advertising

  985. doesn't work on them.

  986. Have you guys heard that?

  987. I'm sure some of you

  988. have said that before.

  989. Yeah.

  990. If you think that

  991. you are the marketer's

  992. favorite demographic,

  993. they love you

  994. because you buy

  995. into their ads

  996. without even knowing it.

  997. Advertisements

  998. are not trying

  999. to persuade you

  1000. rationally

  1001. to go and buy

  1002. some product

  1003. or something

  1004. immediately.

  1005. They're not a call

  1006. to action.

  1007. They're planting

  1008. these little signals.

  1009. They're triggering,

  1010. they're tapping

  1011. into your natural

  1012. human desires

  1013. for love

  1014. and for acceptance,

  1015. for significance,

  1016. for pleasure,

  1017. for comfort,

  1018. for status,

  1019. for sex,

  1020. for health.

  1021. And then if they

  1022. subtly attach

  1023. those markers

  1024. to their brand

  1025. to create

  1026. a positive association,

  1027. a positive feeling

  1028. about their brand

  1029. that you're not

  1030. even aware of

  1031. subconsciously

  1032. and then later

  1033. when you go shopping

1034. or go to a grocery store

  1035. or you go someplace,

1036. it's just that slight nudge

  1037. that's necessary

1038. to get you to buy

  1039. their product

  1040. as opposed to

  1041. their competitors.

  1042. There's a reason

  1043. why they spend

  1044. $70 billion

  1045. in TV ads

  1046. every year.

  1047. They're not dumb.

  1048. They've done their research.

1049. They know that it works.

  1050. The seductive power

  1051. of idolatry

  1052. works the same way.

  1053. You're not going

  1054. to become an apostate

  1055. overnight,

  1056. but gradually

  1057. your affections

  1058. will be reoriented

  1059. and it will make

1060. the things of the world

  1061. look normal

  1062. and right

1063. and the things of God

  1064. look strange.

  1065. When you read articles

  1066. and books

  1067. about the rich

  1068. and the successful

  1069. all the time,

  1070. do you not think

  1071. that over time

  1072. that the seductive influence

  1073. of wealth and fame

  1074. would affect the way

  1075. you think

1076. and feel about those things?

  1077. When you spend

  1078. less than 10 minutes

  1079. reading the Bible

  1080. each day

  1081. but hours

  1082. each day

  1083. reading the news

  1084. or playing some game,

  1085. what do you think

  1086. will control

  1087. your attitude

  1088. and affections?

  1089. What do you think

  1090. will shape

  1091. your concerns

  1092. and priorities?

  1093. Eternal things

  1094. or temporal things?

  1095. When you spend

  1096. hours of your day

  1097. on social media

  1098. comparing yourselves

  1099. to others

  1100. and looking at

  1101. how many likes

  1102. and retweets

  1103. your friends have

  1104. or other people have,

  1105. do you think

  1106. that over time

  1107. you will not

  1108. come to believe

  1109. the lie

  1110. that your life

  1111. will be significant

  1112. only if you could

  1113. have as many friends

  1114. or as followers

  1115. as they have

  1116. or when you get

  1117. as many likes

  1118. as they get?

  1119. When you get

  1120. to see skinny,

  1121. curvy,

  1122. and scantily clad

  1123. women everywhere

  1124. on billboards

  1125. and web browsers

  1126. and even while

  1127. just walking

  1128. down the street,

  1129. do you think

  1130. that over time

  1131. you will not

  1132. believe the lie

  1133. that that's

  1134. where true

  1135. pleasure lies

  1136. or that you

  1137. will need to

  1138. look like that

  1139. in order for you

  1140. to be loved?

  1141. I'm not saying

  1142. that you need

  1143. to go into

  1144. a monastery.

  1145. Monasticism

  1146. might shield us

  1147. from outside temptations

  1148. but it will not

  1149. protect us

  1150. from the sinful

  1151. flesh,

  1152. the evil within us.

  1153. We need to be

  1154. in the world

1155. but not of the world

  1156. but as Christians

1157. we do need to be

  1158. sober minded

  1159. and discerning.

  1160. We need fences.

  1161. We need filters.

  1162. There are some shows

  1163. that Christians

  1164. should not watch.

  1165. There are some places

  1166. that Christians

  1167. should not go

  1168. physically or spiritually

  1169. or virtually

  1170. I mean,

  1171. sorry.

  1172. There are some lines

  1173. that Christians

  1174. should not cross.

  1175. Most of us

  1176. here in Cambridge

  1177. are not at risk

  1178. of becoming Amish

  1179. but some of us

  1180. are at risk

  1181. of becoming pagan.

  1182. In order to maintain

  1183. our distinct identity

1184. as the people of God

  1185. we do need

  1186. some protection.

  1187. Offense

  1188. but we need more

  1189. than that

  1190. because keeping

  1191. temptations at bay

  1192. is important

  1193. but we also need

  1194. to reorient our hearts.

  1195. To that end

  1196. God gives the Israelites

  1197. a calendar.

  1198. He commands them

  1199. to rest

  1200. and to not work

  1201. on the seventh day

  1202. and he gives them

  1203. three feasts

  1204. to observe

  1205. throughout the calendar year.

1206. The feast of unleavened bread

1207. and the feast of weeks

1208. and the feast of gathering.

1209. He says in verse 21

1210. six days you shall work

1211. but on the seventh day

  1212. you shall rest.

  1213. In plowing time

  1214. and in harvest

  1215. you shall rest.

  1216. When God was creating

1217. the heavens and the earth

1218. he rested on the seventh day

  1219. to set an example

  1220. and a pattern

  1221. for humans to follow

  1222. because he knew

  1223. that we needed rest.

  1224. So the Sabbath

  1225. is a reminder

1226. the seventh day of rest

  1227. is a reminder

1228. that we are finite creatures.

1229. That we are not all powerful.

  1230. That we are not

  1231. as indispensable

  1232. to the running

  1233. of this world

1234. as we like to think we are.

  1235. It's a discipline

  1236. that cultivates humility

  1237. and promotes

  1238. our dependence

  1239. on God's

  1240. ultimate provision.

  1241. Plowing time

  1242. and harvest

  1243. it says specifically

  1244. in this verse

  1245. that they should rest

  1246. during those times.

1247. Those are the two busiest times

  1248. of the agricultural year.

1249. You have to get the seeds

  1250. planted in time

  1251. before the rains come

1252. and you have to get

  1253. the wheat harvested

  1254. before the winds

  1255. blow them down

  1256. or before they start

  1257. to sprout

  1258. or before they start

  1259. to develop disease

  1260. and become inedible.

1261. So these are the most

  1262. time sensitive times

  1263. in the life

  1264. of the farmer

  1265. and the Bible

  1266. specifically says

  1267. in plowing time

  1268. and in harvest time

  1269. you shall rest

  1270. because it's a declaration

  1271. of trust.

  1272. The Lord God

  1273. is the one

  1274. who gave us rain

  1275. not Baal

  1276. whom the Canaanites

  1277. worshipped

1278. as the God of rain.

  1279. The Lord God

  1280. is the one

  1281. who gave us

  1282. the growth

  1283. of the harvest.

  1284. So we observe

  1285. the weekly rhythm

  1286. that the Jews

  1287. observe this weekly rhythm

  1288. of the calendar

  1289. to reinforce

  1290. their faith in God.

  1291. During the busiest season

  1292. at your job

  1293. during your finals

  1294. at school

  1295. do you still

  1296. come to church?

  1297. Do you still

  1298. take time

  1299. to worship God

  1300. to rest in Him

  1301. to trust in Him?

  1302. The three feasts

  1303. serve a similar function

  1304. of orienting

  1305. the people of God.

  1306. The feast

  1307. of unleavened bread

  1308. first

  1309. is mentioned

  1310. 25 to 26

  1311. and then

  1312. additional instructions

  1313. are given

  1314. a little bit

  1315. additional instructions

  1316. are given

  1317. in verse 25 to 26

  1318. after first being mentioned

  1319. 18 to 20.

  1320. Let's look at

  1321. 18 to 20 first

  1322. for the feast

  1323. of unleavened bread.

  1324. You shall keep

  1325. the feast

  1326. of unleavened bread

  1327. seven days

  1328. you shall eat

  1329. unleavened bread

  1330. as I commanded you

  1331. at the time

  1332. appointed in the month

  1333. of Abib

  1334. for in the month

  1335. of Abib

  1336. you came out

  1337. from Egypt

  1338. all that opened

  1339. the womb

  1340. are mine

  1341. all your male livestock

  1342. the firstborn

  1343. of cow and sheep

  1344. the firstborn

  1345. of a donkey

  1346. you shall redeem

  1347. with a lamb

  1348. or if you shall

  1349. not redeem it

  1350. you shall break

  1351. its neck

  1352. all the firstborn

  1353. of your sons

  1354. you shall redeem

  1355. and none shall appear

  1356. before me empty handed.

  1357. So the three feasts

  1358. the feast

  1359. of unleavened bread

  1360. feast of weeks

  1361. feast of ingathering

  1362. are all mentioned

  1363. in verse 18 to 24

1364. and then in that same order

  1365. there's three addenda

  1366. additional remarks

  1367. in verse 25 to 26.

  1368. So the additional remark

  1369. related to the feast

  1370. of unleavened bread

  1371. is in verse 25.

  1372. You shall not offer

1373. the blood of my sacrifice

  1374. with anything leavened

  1375. or let the sacrifice

  1376. of the feast

  1377. of the Passover

  1378. remain until the morning.

  1379. If you're with us

  1380. earlier in Exodus

1381. when we were in 12 and 13

  1382. chapters 12 and 13

  1383. God offered

  1384. detailed instructions

  1385. and a rationale

  1386. for this feast

  1387. because on Passover day

  1388. God struck down

  1389. all the firstborn males

  1390. of Egypt

  1391. both animals

  1392. and humans

  1393. but he spared

  1394. the Israelites

  1395. because they had

  1396. killed a sacrifice

  1397. an unblemished lamb

  1398. in order to redeem

  1399. their firstborns.

1400. This was the final disaster

  1401. that God brought

  1402. upon Egypt

  1403. and after this

  1404. Pharaoh finally

  1405. let the Israelites

  1406. leave Egypt

  1407. and go out

  1408. of their slavery.

  1409. The Israelites

  1410. were to remember

  1411. that miraculous

  1412. deliverance

  1413. at Passover

  1414. by offering

  1415. to the Lord

  1416. a sacrifice

1417. of all the firstborn males

  1418. of livestock

  1419. and domestic animals.

  1420. But obviously

  1421. they're not supposed

  1422. to sacrifice

  1423. their own children

  1424. the firstborn sons

1425. and so they are commanded

  1426. to redeem

  1427. the firstborn sons

  1428. with payment

  1429. and offering.

  1430. This is a way

  1431. of remembering

  1432. how God spared

  1433. the Israelites

  1434. firstborn sons

  1435. from the destroying angel

  1436. by redeeming them

  1437. with the Passover lamb

  1438. and that's called

  1439. the feast

  1440. of the unleavened bread

  1441. because they eat

  1442. the Passover lamb

  1443. with unleavened bread

  1444. to commemorate

1445. how they had to leave

  1446. Egypt in haste

1447. so they didn't have time

1448. to let the bread rise.

  1449. This festival

  1450. of Passover

  1451. ultimately points

  1452. to the ransom

  1453. that God pays

  1454. to free his people

  1455. from their slavery

  1456. to sin and death

  1457. in Jesus.

1458. It says in 1 Corinthians

  1459. 5, 6 to 8

  1460. Do you not know

  1461. that a little leaven

  1462. leavens the whole lump?

1463. Cleanse out the old leaven

  1464. that you may be

  1465. a new lump

1466. as you really are unleavened.

  1467. For Christ

  1468. our Passover lamb

  1469. has been sacrificed.

  1470. Let us therefore

  1471. celebrate the festival

1472. not with the old leaven

  1473. the leaven of malice

  1474. and evil

1475. but with the unleavened bread

  1476. of sincerity

  1477. and truth

  1478. because Jesus

  1479. is the ultimate

  1480. unblemished Passover lamb

  1481. who was sacrificed

  1482. for our redemption

  1483. because he died

  1484. on the cross

  1485. for our sins

  1486. in our place

  1487. so we might be

  1488. cleansed of our sins

  1489. and redeemed

  1490. from our own slavery

  1491. to sin and death.

  1492. We now celebrate

  1493. this feast

1494. not with a literal festival

  1495. with unleavened bread

  1496. and eating

  1497. and sacrificed lamb

  1498. but by remembering Jesus

  1499. by celebrating

1500. what he has done for us

  1501. with unleavened bread

  1502. of sincerity and truth.

  1503. The second feast

  1504. mentioned is

  1505. the feast of weeks

  1506. which is the feast

  1507. of the first fruits

  1508. the first fruits

  1509. of wheat harvest

  1510. in verse 22.

  1511. And the additional instruction

  1512. comes in verse 26.

1513. The best of the first fruits

  1514. of your ground

  1515. you shall bring

  1516. to the house

1517. of the Lord your God.

  1518. This feast

  1519. is called

  1520. the feast of weeks

  1521. because after

  1522. waving

  1523. the first

  1524. sheaf

  1525. of wheat

  1526. that you've harvested

  1527. with the sickle

  1528. to God

  1529. you were supposed

  1530. to count

  1531. seven weeks

  1532. of commemorating

  1533. this feast

  1534. and then after

  1535. the seven weeks

  1536. on the 50th day

  1537. they were to bring

  1538. more offerings

  1539. and sacrifices

  1540. to kind of

  1541. the climactic

  1542. celebration

  1543. of the feast

1544. so on the 50th day

  1545. they would do that

  1546. and that's why

  1547. this feast

  1548. is called

  1549. in the New Testament

  1550. Pentecost

  1551. that comes from

  1552. the word

  1553. that means 50

  1554. and the offering

  1555. of first fruits

  1556. was a pledge

  1557. of trust

  1558. similar to

  1559. the other feasts

  1560. it's Israel's way

  1561. of saying to God

  1562. you brought

  1563. these first fruits

  1564. forth

  1565. and we trust

  1566. that you will

  1567. bring the rest

  1568. of the harvest

  1569. the first fruit

  1570. offering is also

  1571. to be made

  1572. from the best

  1573. of the first fruits

  1574. not the worst

  1575. it's supposed

  1576. to be the cream

  1577. of the crop

  1578. not the crumbs

  1579. of the crop

  1580. you give God

  1581. the first fruits

  1582. the best

  1583. of the first fruits

  1584. of your time

  1585. and of your talents

  1586. and of your treasures

1587. or do you give him

  1588. the leftovers

  1589. is it clear

  1590. to those around you

  1591. that God

  1592. is your first

  1593. priority in life

  1594. when you throw

  1595. a birthday party

  1596. for your friend

  1597. and you cut

  1598. the birthday cake

  1599. you give the first

  1600. slice to

  1601. the birthday person

  1602. right

  1603. it's a way

  1604. of honoring them

  1605. and celebrating them

  1606. and reminding them

1607. that this is for you

  1608. we put this on

  1609. for you

  1610. imagine how sad

  1611. it would be

  1612. if you give out

  1613. the cake

  1614. to everybody

  1615. and then

  1616. the birthday boy

  1617. or girl

1618. is sitting in the corner

  1619. eating the crumbs

  1620. the whole world

  1621. is about God

  1622. it was created

  1623. for God

  1624. your life

  1625. you are alive

  1626. and breathing today

  1627. to exist for God

  1628. to glorify him

  1629. your life

  1630. is about him

  1631. then that means

  1632. he should get

  1633. the first fruits

  1634. of your life

  1635. of your work

  1636. the best

1637. of what you can offer

  1638. in your life

  1639. taking this

  1640. and talking about

  1641. how Jesus fulfilled

  1642. this in Romans 8 23

  1643. Paul tells us

  1644. that we

  1645. God's people

  1646. are the first fruits

  1647. of the spirit

  1648. we are God's

  1649. reward

  1650. the reward

  1651. of the harvest

  1652. that he brings forth

  1653. the first of it

  1654. but not the last

  1655. the full redemption

  1656. we still await

  1657. with the glorification

  1658. of our bodies

  1659. that is to come

  1660. in the future

  1661. the third

  1662. and final

  1663. major feast

  1664. is the feast

  1665. of in gathering

  1666. at the year's end

  1667. mentioned in verse 22

  1668. and the additional instruction

  1669. comes in verse 26

  1670. you shall not boil

  1671. a young goat

  1672. in its mother's milk

  1673. this feast

  1674. is more commonly

  1675. called the feast

  1676. of tabernacles

  1677. or the feast

  1678. of booths

  1679. because that's how

  1680. the Israelites

  1681. lived in the wilderness

  1682. and this feast

  1683. came to be

  1684. associated with

  1685. the wilderness

  1686. the tent

  1687. or the tabernacle

  1688. where they worship

  1689. God

  1690. and also the tent

  1691. in which they lived

  1692. it's kind of like

  1693. their thanksgiving

  1694. harvest

  1695. remembering the harvest

  1696. and giving thanks

  1697. to God for it

  1698. and the oddly

  1699. specific command

  1700. you shall not boil

  1701. a young goat

  1702. in its mother's milk

  1703. was also given

  1704. earlier in Exodus 23

  1705. 19

  1706. I mentioned this

  1707. then that following

  1708. the 12th century AD

  1709. Jewish philosopher

  1710. Maimonides

  1711. many scholars argue

  1712. that this verse

  1713. is forbidding the Israelites

  1714. from following

  1715. the pagan practices

  1716. of their ancient

  1717. Near Eastern labors

  1718. there is a chance

  1719. that a ritual

  1720. similar to what's

  1721. mentioned here

  1722. was written about

  1723. in an ancient

  1724. Ugaritic text

  1725. involved boiling

  1726. a young goat

  1727. in its mother's milk

  1728. probably some kind

  1729. fertility ritual

  1730. to please the gods

  1731. ensure a good harvest

  1732. for the following year

1733. since milk is a symbol

  1734. of life

  1735. and a goat kid

  1736. is a symbol

  1737. of fertility

  1738. it's also possible

  1739. that there's just

  1740. something perverse

  1741. about boiling

  1742. a young goat

1743. in its own mother's milk

  1744. because the young goat

  1745. should be fed

  1746. and nourished

  1747. by its mother's milk

  1748. not cooked

  1749. and killed in it

  1750. and so again

  1751. God is teaching

  1752. the people of God

  1753. to orient themselves

  1754. toward him

  1755. to remember

  1756. that he's the one

  1757. who gives the harvest

  1758. he's the one

1759. who takes care of them

  1760. not these false gods

  1761. and idols

  1762. Jesus fulfills this

  1763. as well

  1764. during the feast

  1765. of tabernacles

  1766. in fulfillment

  1767. of the tabernacle

  1768. God's people

  1769. Solomon built

  1770. the temple of God

  1771. as he says

  1772. in 1 Kings 8 65

  1773. and now

  1774. Jesus says

  1775. and Paul says

  1776. in following him

  1777. in 1 Corinthians 3 16

  1778. that we

  1779. God's people

  1780. are being built up

  1781. as the tabernacle

1782. or the temple of God

  1783. a spiritual house

  1784. for him

  1785. so this is why

  1786. we don't literally

  1787. celebrate these feasts

  1788. as Christians

  1789. because Christ

  1790. has fulfilled them all

  1791. Colossians 2 16 17

  1792. says therefore

  1793. let no one pass

  1794. judgment on you

  1795. in questions of food

  1796. and drink

  1797. or with regard

  1798. to a festival

  1799. or a new moon

  1800. or a Sabbath

  1801. these are a shadow

1802. of the things to come

  1803. but the substance

  1804. belongs to Christ

1805. when you see a shadow

  1806. as you're walking

  1807. passing over you

  1808. you see the shadow

  1809. on the ground

  1810. you look up

  1811. to see the bird

  1812. flying overhead

  1813. it's the shadow

1814. that points to the substance

  1815. that is there

1816. the reality that is there

  1817. likewise

  1818. these feasts

  1819. and the Sabbaths

  1820. were meant to be

  1821. a shadow

1822. that points to the reality

  1823. the substance of Jesus

  1824. who is to come

  1825. and fulfill

  1826. all of these things

  1827. so now that Christ

  1828. has come

  1829. instead of celebrating

  1830. these feasts

1831. we gather on the Lord's Day

  1832. on Sundays

  1833. to remember Christ

  1834. and his redemptive work

1835. and in the Lord's Supper

  1836. we remember his body

  1837. broken for us

1838. his body which is for us

1839. and we remember his blood

1840. that was poured out for us

  1841. for our atonement

  1842. for our salvation

  1843. and this weekly rhythm

  1844. has the similar effect

  1845. that the festivals had

  1846. for the Jews

  1847. of shaping our attitudes

  1848. how we think

  1849. and shaping our affections

  1850. how we love

  1851. and what we love

  1852. theologian James K. Smith

  1853. writes about this

  1854. in his book

1855. you are what you love

  1856. the spiritual power

  1857. of habit

  1858. he says

  1859. in worship

  1860. we don't just come

  1861. to show God

  1862. our devotion

  1863. and give him

  1864. our praise

  1865. we are called

  1866. to worship

  1867. because in this encounter

  1868. God remakes

  1869. and molds us

  1870. top down

  1871. worship is the arena

  1872. in which God

  1873. recalibrates our hearts

  1874. reforms our desires

  1875. and rehabituates

  1876. our loves

  1877. worship isn't just

  1878. something we do

  1879. it is where God

  1880. does something to us

  1881. worship is the heart

  1882. of discipleship

1883. because it is the gymnasium

  1884. in which God

  1885. retrains our hearts

  1886. credit to Ed

  1887. for pointing this out

  1888. to me

  1889. this passage

  1890. earlier this week

  1891. yes we gather

  1892. to worship God

  1893. together on Sundays

  1894. that's our primary purpose

  1895. but that's not

  1896. the only purpose

  1897. of our gathering

  1898. here

  1899. as we are singing

  1900. to God

  1901. as we hear

  1902. God's word preached

  1903. as we encourage

  1904. and exhort one another

1905. with the truths of God

  1906. we are being

  1907. transformed

  1908. by the renewal

  1909. of our mind

  1910. our hearts

  1911. are being recalibrated

  1912. our minds

  1913. are being realigned

  1914. to the things

  1915. of God

  1916. to his values

  1917. to his purposes

  1918. and priorities

  1919. that's how we maintain

  1920. our distinct identity

1921. as the people of God

  1922. but no matter

  1923. how much you try

  1924. to retrain your heart

  1925. if you still have

  1926. an old sinful heart

1927. a heart that has not

  1928. been made new

  1929. by the power

  1930. of the Holy Spirit

  1931. it's all in vain

  1932. no amount of training

  1933. can change you

1934. it says in verse 28

  1935. that Moses was there

  1936. with the Lord

1937. forty days and forty nights

  1938. he neither ate bread

  1939. nor drank water

  1940. and he wrote

  1941. on the tablets

1942. the words of the covenant

  1943. the ten commandments

  1944. Moses wrote these words

  1945. down on tablets

  1946. of stone

  1947. to show how permanent

  1948. they are

  1949. Moses didn't write them

  1950. God wrote them

  1951. he took the tablets

  1952. to God

  1953. for him to write

  1954. but nevertheless

  1955. Moses had no power

  1956. to make the Israelites

  1957. remain faithful to him

  1958. again and again

  1959. throughout the book

  1960. of Numbers

  1961. Deuteronomy

  1962. you see how Israelites

  1963. are unfaithful to God

  1964. on their journey

  1965. to the promised land

  1966. and at the end

  1967. of Moses' life

  1968. he knows that

  1969. the Israelites

  1970. will continue

  1971. to be unfaithful

1972. but then he tells them

  1973. of this prophecy

  1974. he prophesies

  1975. of a day

  1976. in Deuteronomy 36

  1977. when the Lord

  1978. your God

  1979. will circumcise

  1980. your heart

  1981. and the heart

  1982. of your offspring

  1983. so that you will

  1984. love the Lord

  1985. your God

  1986. with all your heart

1987. and with all your soul

  1988. that you may live

  1989. he's prophesying

  1990. of a day

  1991. when the Israelites

1992. will have a new heart

  1993. when the old

  1994. is peeled away

  1995. and the new

  1996. comes forth

  1997. Moses did not

1998. get to see that day

  1999. because Jesus

  2000. is the one

  2001. who fulfilled

  2002. this promise

  2003. and prophecy

  2004. just like Moses

  2005. who fasted

  2006. 40 days and 40 nights

  2007. before bringing

  2008. the 10 commandments

  2009. down on tablets

  2010. of stone

  2011. Jesus fasted

  2012. 40 days and 40 nights

  2013. before he began

  2014. his earthly ministry

  2015. in Matthew 4

  2016. and 2 Corinthians 3

  2017. 3 tells us

  2018. that while the commandments

  2019. of God

  2020. were written

  2021. on tablets of stone

  2022. during Moses' day

  2023. Jesus writes

  2024. with the ink

  2025. of the Holy Spirit

  2026. on the tablets

  2027. of human hearts

  2028. so that we love

  2029. and obey God

  2030. with our whole hearts

  2031. this doesn't mean

2032. that we no longer sin

2033. or that we obey God

  2034. perfectly

  2035. but we now have

  2036. new desires

  2037. we don't obey

  2038. because we have to

2039. even when we don't want to

2040. that's what the legalists do

  2041. we don't disobey

2042. because we don't want to

2043. that's what the lawless people do

  2044. but we obey God

  2045. because we want to

  2046. because we now

  2047. have a new heart

  2048. from the inside out

  2049. we're transformed

  2050. to love him

  2051. and obey him

  2052. and to serve him

  2053. and that's ultimately

  2054. what God had promised

  2055. in verse 10

  2056. when he said

  2057. I will create

  2058. something that I've

  2059. never done before

  2060. something marvelous

  2061. and awesome

  2062. in Jesus

2063. God forges a new covenant

  2064. with his people

  2065. and in Jesus

  2066. God brings about

  2067. the new creation

  2068. 2 Corinthians 5 17

  2069. therefore if anyone

  2070. is in Christ

2071. he is a new creation

2072. the old has passed away

  2073. behold the new

  2074. has come

  2075. a fence

  2076. and a calendar

  2077. are useful

  2078. for those who have

  2079. already been made new

  2080. but no amount

  2081. of fencing

  2082. and calendaring

  2083. can make you

  2084. a new creation

  2085. if you're not yet

  2086. a follower of Christ

  2087. no amount

  2088. of church attendance

  2089. will save you

  2090. only Jesus

  2091. by the power

  2092. of the Holy Spirit

  2093. can do that

2094. so you need to repent

  2095. of your sins

  2096. and turn to him

  2097. in faith

2098. and for the rest of us

  2099. let's keep on focusing

  2100. our hearts and minds

  2101. on Jesus

2102. it's only when we fix

  2103. our eyes on him

2104. that we can stay the course

  2105. and maintain our identity

  2106. our distinct identity

2107. as the people of God

  2108. let's pray together

  2109. Father we confess

  2110. that it's so easy

2111. for us to just drift

  2112. in the currents

  2113. of this world

  2114. this sinful world

  2115. we can so quickly

  2116. get unmoored

  2117. from the anger

  2118. of Christ

  2119. so help us Lord

  2120. as we gather

  2121. in your name

  2122. as we remember

  2123. Christ

  2124. the Passover lamb

  2125. who was sacrificed

  2126. for us

  2127. as we rest

  2128. in you

  2129. remind us

  2130. of our new identity

  2131. in Christ

  2132. and help us

  2133. to live

  2134. faithfully

  2135. to be loyal

  2136. to be dependent

  2137. on you

2138. so that we can be

  2139. your witnesses

  2140. so that we can

  2141. maintain our identity

  2142. as a distinct

  2143. people of God

  2144. chosen

  2145. as your special

  2146. possession

  2147. to bring you glory

  2148. Lord set us

  2149. apart

  2150. for yourself

2151. we want to honor you

  2152. in Jesus name

  2153. we pray

  2154. Amen

  2155. establish

  2156. unto you

  2157. about

  2158. you
